ORGANIC EVOLUTION In 1971, Dale DeMeulemeester left his hometown of Detroit, USA, and moved to New Zealand where, together with a group of friends and family, he purchased a 40 hectare property in Ahuroa in North Auckland. “We were trying to get out into the middle of nowhere,” says Dale. “It was a great choice to come to New Zealand and I couldn’t be happier about it.” Words Luke Williamson

The sale of the property wasn’t finalised until early 1972 at which point the communal group set about planting. “We wanted to grow our own food, but we also wanted to grow things for others because it’s a big piece of land,” says Dale. As a city kid from Detroit, Dale and his friends weren’t aware of the term ‘organics’, but they knew the future was all about growing fruit and vegetables without pesticides and herbicides. “People were realising they were poisoning themselves and the land, and we weren’t going to do it if it wasn’t organic,” he says. Although most well known for his feijoas, Dale has tried a lot of different crops. “We grow everything we possibly can – peaches, nectarines, grapefruit, bananas, and

macadamias. We try to get the most out of what this climate will allow,” he says. Dale explains that, back in the early 70s, focussing on feijoas was just an accident. “We’d never tasted a feijoa before coming to New Zealand, and we loved them, but we soon realised we’d made an error planting so many trees because feijoas were not a commercial fruit – everyone in New Zealand had a feijoa tree in their backyard!” So they had to think of something to do with them and what really stirred people’s imagination was creating a feijoa wine. “A lot of fruit wines, when you taste them, you can’t tell what fruit it is. But with feijoas, you know exactly what it is,” laughs Dale. So, in 1993, Dale and his eldest son, Eli, together

with winemaker Logan Petley, established Lothlorien Winery. “I said to Eli, I’m too old to start a new business, but if you’re willing to do it, I’ll throw all my weight behind you. It was Eli’s thing, but we’re all involved,” says Dale. The Winery has gone from strength to strength, and now enjoys nation-wide distribution and recognition. “We’re a completely unique product,” says Dale. “There’s a lot of competition in the traditional wine market but, if you want feijoa wine, there’s only one place to go.” Eli adds, “there are people for whom our wine is their regular choice and it’s how they celebrate special occasions. We have very good loyalty amongst our customers.”

Lothlorien’s elegant website also offers customers a still version of feijoa wine, a feijoa and mānuka honey liqueur, and the Feijoa Lounge experience which involves a tour of the orchard and tasting the Lothlorien range, along with nibbles, in the wine cellar. With 50 years experience of growing organically, the Lothlorien team are determined to keep on expanding. “We’re developing some interesting ideas for new products, but we can’t share details yet,” says Eli. “It will be a year or two away, but we’re excited about it.” And soon they will be introducing their pecan nuts to the market. “The trees take at least 30 years to produce and our 40-year-old trees are starting to hit serious production now,” says Dale. While Dale speaks of luck and ignorance in his early years on the property, people now look to him as a leader in organic growing and its evolution in New Zealand. “I help people whenever and wherever I can because I want to be supportive of organic growing,” he says. “I want it to be the way everyone in New Zealand grows.” www.lothlorienwinery.co.nz

The protection of assets that we have all worked so hard to acquire is an important consideration for most people. ENVIRONMENTAL GUARDIAN Whether it’s working with her students at the literal grass roots to protect the Kaipara Harbour, or going to battle with multinational corporations in New Zealand’s courts, Michelle Carmichael truly represents the sort of person you want in your corner in the fight for local community rights and resources. Words Luke Williamson

A teacher at Tapora School for nine years, Kaipara Harbour local Michelle Carmichael, is no stranger to helping the natural habitat around her. “We do a lot of work on the margins of the Kaipara

Harbour to help protect it,” she says. “We’ve planted thousands of trees. We encourage our students to get involved in these activities and they’re very environmentally aware.”

In 2018 when Waste Management Ltd began presenting their

plan for a huge landfill in the Dome Valley in Wellsford, Michelle along with other locals, found herself up in arms. And so ‘Fight

the Tip, Save the Dome’ was born - a broad coalition of the wider community, including councils, iwis and MPs - all fearful of the devastating damage the landfill could do to the environment,

Hoteo River, Wellsford town water and Kaipara Harbour, as well

the impact 300-500 extra trucks a day may have. While Michelle didn't have a history of activism, having grown up in Auckland

in an Orakei state house, she can still remember as a 7 year old the occupation of Bastion Point. “I saw the determination of the

occupiers to stand up for their rights and it made a long-lasting

impact on me,” she says. “I don’t just take things at face value. I

question everything. We teach our kids at school to do this as well – dig deeper and find out for yourself.”

PROFILE

Something Michelle has found hard to deal with has been community apathy about the landfill fight. “There are so many people out there who believe this is a done deal. That’s the saddest thing for me,” she says. In a quest to overcome this disillusionment, Michelle is putting herself forward as a candidate for the Warkworth Ward of the Rodney Local Board. “There’s a real distrust of our politicians and I think it needs to change. I hope I can bring something fresh. I look at issues in depth, and I’m very cautious about corporate and political influence because I’ve experienced those things with Fight the Tip.” Michelle feels she would bring strength, patience and collaboration to the role, attributes she has honed over her nearly four years of going to battle with Waste Management. “I hope people will see that I was able to work with all sorts of groups and iwi on the landfill issue, and that I can bring those skills to the local board,” she says. Considering the needs of the environment and other people ahead of yourself is an admirable trait, epitomised in Michelle's view of the current proceedings at the Environment Court. “When you look at that level and breadth of opposition, my feeling is there’s something inherently wrong with our system if the court doesn’t reverse the decision to give consent. There are so many environmental and cultural impacts from this - they have to withdraw permission for the sake of the whole country.” “I’m hoping I’ll be able to make a difference on the local board in the same way I have with the fight over the landfill,” says Michelle. She’s proven she won’t give up easily and keeps a positive view about what communities can achieve when they work together. “I have never thought, why did I start? It’s always, what else can I do?”. www.facebook.com/FightWMSavetheDome/ www.givealittle.co.nz/cause/fightthetip

A MAGICAL ESCAPE Bathed in sunshine and happy vibes, Arohanui Cabins is an off-the-grid, eco-conscious glamping site offering guests a chance to disconnect from the busyness of life while being cocooned in nature. Set just outside of the seaside town of Mangawhai, with breathtaking views of the surrounding native bush and farmland, the north facing, sun soaked site consists of a cluster of cabins - two bedrooms, a bathroom and a kitchen. Much loved by families, friends and lovers, it is no wonder it was awarded runner up in 2021 for AirBnB’s Best Regional Stay. Totally off-grid, Arohanui offers campfires and tree swings, a beautiful open air cast iron bath and a cosy bedroom cabin with skylights for stargazing. At the heart of all the cabins is a landscaped courtyard and covered pergola, complete with an authentic pizza oven and hammock, providing the

ultimate outdoor living experience. Although including a fridge, gas hobs, and cooking

echoing early colonial styles - the cabins are beautifully styled, with every detail carefully

thought through. Arohanui means ‘much love’ which is symbolic of the story and family that are behind the glampsite’s creation, as well as a nod to the memories that will be made by all those who enjoy a stay there.

We have an affinity for rural living, both having grown up in the country. Mangawhai has become a special family destination for us since Dean’s parents retired here 21 years ago. The inspiration for the cabins started when we found the kitchen on TradeMe. It was a shed which had been lovingly created from recycled materials in the style of a Department of Conservation camping hut. Called the ‘Doc Shed’, we based our entire design of the glampsite around it, and

everything evolved rather organically from there. We had a vision to develop something that echoed the early colonial New Zealand era, was off-grid and eco conscious, and also something which would provide a place for us to spend time together as a family. This also led to the name of the cabins - Arohanui means ‘much love’ which is what we hope time at the cabins will create for all who stay there. DID YOU HAVE A FOCUSSED PLAN REGARDING THE STYLE OR DID IT JUST EVOLVE NATURALLY? We worked with a great company called Love Shack who build bespoke tiny houses. Together we evolved the design around wooden colonial style cabins that would be luxurious as well as fun to stay in year round. Each of the cabins have their own character the bedrooms are simple, clean and cosy, the bathroom is quirky and sauna-like, while the kitchen cabin is more rustic. We weren’t sure how it would all look when it came together, but we love the end result.

is a lovely spot to make a morning stovetop coffee from. The private campfire area down in the bush reserve is a favourite spot for kids, big and small, to enjoy the native birds, bush, swings and toasted marshmallows.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE FEATURES OF THE CABINS?

The best of both worlds! It is something very unique and romantic - a secluded spot for you to leave the world behind and connect with nature and people that are special to you, while not being deprived of modern conveniences and luxuries. Best of all Mangawhai is just down the road for a coffee fix, essentials and some beautiful beaches.

It is hard to go past the cast iron bath with the big barn doors, which makes bath time for the kids super fun and for the adults, it is a brilliant spot to chill in at night with a glass of wine. We also love lying in bed at night and being able to stargaze through the windows in the bedroom. Our bespoke macrocarpa kitchen, with the orange sink we found, is tiny but has all that you need and

WHAT AMAZING FINDS OR DEALS DID YOU COME ACROSS DURING THE BUILD PROCESS? The Doc Shed started it all. It was such a labour of love for a builder/artist to create made entirely of recycled materials from a villa. The cabins are an eclectic collection of finds from TradeMe. M EET H EAT HE R WA LTON • How long have you been selling homes Heather? Over 15 years. I first obtained my licence in 1995 if you can believe that while I was working in a law firm. So I’ve only ever been involved in Property my entire career. Firstly law, then development, and now selling principal. So I’ve made a career out of property, its all I know. I’ve been a business owner now for over 6 years building our company to one of the largest groups in New Zealand. • What made you decide to expand the Black Group by opening an office in Matakana? My husband spent some time attending Matakana Primary when his parents lived in Buckletons Beach. It was always a dream of his to come back here at some stage. We started to look for a beach property in Omaha about 8 years ago and we just always felt sad driving back to Auckland. Our Newmarket office is one of the to agencies in New Zealand and with so many clients of those clients moving to the Rodney area we decided to open an office here. We now have the major market share in Omaha and my team are doing a wonderful job in the rest of Matakana, Point Wells and surrounding areas • Why do you think you have taken over market share so quickly in Omaha? Being successful in real estate starts from having great relationships. Most of my clients up here are either existing clients, friends or have been referred by other happy customers wanting their friends and neighbours to enjoy the same success they did when they sold with us. In a small community news spreads like wild fire and now we are the go to. • Why do you think you achieve such great prices for your clients? We don’t just put up a sign and hope for the best. We have a huge range of services and skills. We firstly offer an array of services at the home preparation phase from painting to staging using all our local contacts and expertise. Having sold for over 15 years in the most affluent suburbs in Auckland, I have a pretty good idea on how a home should be presented not to mention a massive database. Do it once and do it right is my motto. You don’t sell an expensive asset like this everyday so why cut corners? It will only cost you in the long run in terms of price. • When is the best time of year to sell? I get asked this a lot. Depending on suburbs for example Omaha sales go well in the months leading up to and after Christmas but of course with the limited stock ever available in Omaha any time of year works. Winter for example gives an opportunity to show case the heating of a home such as a lovely cosy fire. I like to answer this question specifically in relation to each home I’m appraising. • What would you say is your main point of difference? Agent skill level in terms of legal knowledge, negotiation, contractual drafting, construction and interior design. My team are highly skilled and didn’t just complete a sales persons licence and think they can sell real estate. My team are carefully chosen for their unique qualities they can add to the process and our training is continual. • What are your hobbies? I play golf which goes hand in hand in this area with the Omaha and Warkworth golf courses on our door step. Its a frustrating but infectious game that has got me hook line and sinker, despite my handicap increasing rather than decreasing!! My husband and I also own a lovely boat and we get out on the water as often as we can. • Do you have any animals? I have an adorable Toy American Brown Schnauzer - Cody Bear - who is world famous in Omaha. He’s so adorable we are getting him a baby brother next week. Oh and a cat called Cleo who’s very secondary to the pups these days.

PADDOCK TO PLATE Sharing an obsession with meat and how to cook it to perfection was a good enough reason for three kiwi brothers – Simon, William and Tim Eriksen – to start a business suppling top notch cuts of meat to New Zealanders through retailers, restaurants, hotels and event companies. Words Milly Nolan

Growing up on the family sheep and beef farm in Waerenga-O-Kuri, 50km west of Gisborne, life for the Eriksen brothers was about caring for the animals, catching eels in the creek, playing bullrush, tennis and rugby. School was 35 kids in two classrooms with two teachers. With such a rural upbringing, it is no wonder that the youngest brother, Tim, recently felt the urge to move from Auckland with his wife and three young children, for the greener pastures of Matakana. As the director and head of sales for Neat Meat, Tim joins his two brothers along with business partners Andy Ham and Mark Hunter in the New Zealand owned, family run business. For twenty years now, Neat Meat has supplied high quality meat to some of New Zealand’s best restaurants throughout the country, while in the last decade, their premium retail brand, Harmony, has really taken off, filling the shelves of supermarkets and independent retail grocers such as the Matakana Four Square.

Specialising in resource management planning which includes: • Infrastructure planning • Policy and plan development • Expert witness services • Discharge permits • Stakeholder and community engagement • Project management, and • Property due diligence and site selection.

The Eriksen Brothers from left, Simon, Tim and William

“The dynamic of our business has changed considerably over the last five years as it became obvious that people’s appetite for meat was dwindling,” says Tim. “While the price of meat played a huge part in this, what our research showed was that people were equally, if not more so, concerned about the effect that eating meat had on the environment as well as animal welfare.” This is where the Harmony brand has stepped into the limelight with its variety of grass-fed, freerange and certified organic beef, lamb and pork produced using the most sustainable methods from a select group of farms. “Our catchphrase for Harmony is ‘Believe in Better’,” says Tim, “which means looking after the animals and the farmers while also protecting the planet through ethical and sustainable methods from paddock to plate. How an animal lives, adds more quality and flavour than any other aspect of the process. Our animals are raised with care and prepared with precision.”

popular ever since. My Food Bag - which Neat Meat are the exclusive meat suppliers of - also skyrocketed in popularity during lockdown, which meant that along with the sales of Harmony, luckily these two channels more than compensated for the loss of the restaurant business.

As it was for most businesses, the beginning of the Pandemic was terrifying for Neat Meat with the knowledge that if everyone was to be locked at home, a big part of their business (which was serving restaurants) was going to suffer. As it turned out, Neat Meat lost 40% of their business overnight when New Zealand went into lockdown in March 2020 and restaurants closed. However, as a consequence and an interesting byproduct, their Harmony brand went crazy at the supermarket level - putting their meat onto the plates of a lot of New Zealanders who otherwise may never have brought the brand, and encouragingly, it has remained

Also a positive to come out of the Pandemic, was the launch of Neat Meat online. While the plans were already in place to launch an e-commerce site, the current situation fast tracked the process and Aucklander’s were lucky enough to order meat direct to their door while they were unable to venture out. “The website has been going from strength to strength and is now a fully functional channel of our business,” says Tim. “We currently provide to greater Auckland, Tauranga and Hamilton, but I am currently working really hard to open up the delivery to include the Matakana region. The Neat Meat store is a hybrid of our Harmony products plus

The Pandemic also saw an unprecedented demand for sausages, which meant that Tim and his brothers Simon and Willie, ended up on the production line at their headquarters in Mount Wellington, purely so that they could keep the supermarket shelves full. “I was third in charge sausage maker for about five months straight,” says Tim. “I would be in the factory from 3am to 5pm for three days in a row. I had gone from wining and dining while visiting chefs to making sausages, but for all the chaos that was happening in the world, it was actually a very humbling experience and a nice way of bringing the Neat Meat family together.”

slightly more obscure cuts that we send to restaurants, so you really get the best of both worlds when buying online.” When questioned what it is like working with his two big brothers, Tim answered “put it this way, we never have to involve HR if there’s ever an issue. Instead if there’s any trouble between the three of us, we just wrestle it out. I had a rumble with my brother Willie the other day who is quite a bit bigger than me, but I managed to pin him down so that he was cast like a pregnant ewe and couldn't get up. I relinquished my knee off his throat, he admitted defeat and that was our internal issue resolved. No need for HR, just a good old fashioned wrestle. But in all honesty, I enjoy working with those boys and they are good friends as well as good business partners. It works well,” he says. While a day in the life of Neat Meat is never short of work to be done, next on the company’s list of future plans is to export their meat overseas. “New Zealand is an amazing country that produces spectacular meat, so exporting Harmony is right up there in our future plans,” says Tim, “although for us it has always been about getting it right locally before we expand globally.” Getting it right and meeting a challenge is certainly something that the brothers have succeeded in since the early 2000s, so it will no doubt only be a matter of time before kiwis living overseas will be able to join the rest of us in delighting in meat that not only tastes good, but is good for the planet also. It’s a win-win kind of situation. www.neatmeat.com SAVOUR

COASTAL COFFEE Inspired by living in the moment and getting your feet sandy, East Coast Roast offers small-batch roasted coffee; available in beans, espresso or plunger grind. Created by hand in magical Mangawhai. Words Shannen Frear Photos Sam Ivey films

After taking a break from the corporate grind to become a stay-at-home mum to her two beautiful girls for the last six years, Adele Hovell recently brought her dream to life with her business East Coast Roast. Previously, Adele had worked for a number of well-known companies, such as Red Bull, Schwarzkopf and 42 Below; a business that also started in the founder's garage. Adele was inspired by people who were converting their passion into profit and this gave her the confidence to launch her own business and so East Coast Roast was born. Setting up her dream involved a great deal of research into boutique coffee roasting. Hunting for the right roaster, hands-on training, as well as discovering where to source the best beans that aligned with Adele's values and brand. It was essential to find a company that appreciated sustainability, waste reduction

and ethical farming. After extensive planning,

SEASONAL GARDENING CALENDAR What a great clean-up month July can be. Celebrate a sunny winter day by getting out in your garden and doing all those tasks like clearing away the last of the summer crops, topping up raised beds and pruning fruit trees. Sitting in a sunny spot with a warm cuppa can also be valuable. A bit of time invested in observing your garden is gold. Take a moment to get excited about your spring garden, which is just around the corner. Words Geoff Ledbrook

STRAWBERRIES Big red juicy strawberries at your fingertips. A great reason to get into your winter garden and plant strawberries this month. Strawberries are a perfect crop for the home garden. They are sure to be a hit with young gardeners. Once you establish a strawberry bed, you can pick fruit for many months, from mid-spring until autumn, depending on the variety. Hey, you may even get so many you need to make a small batch of your own strawberry jam. Now that is something special to have in your pantry.

these varieties planted early, from May to July, is important. Short-day varieties include Chandler, Pajaro, Sundae, Camino Real, Camarosa and Royal. Strawberries grow well in a raised bed or a mounded garden bed. They like fertile, welldrained soil with good potassium (K) levels. They prefer acidic soil (pH 5.5 to 6.5). You can also grow strawberries very successfully in hanging baskets or containers. Use a good potting mix or a dedicated strawberry mix which is available at most garden centres. As a rule of thumb, planting five plants per person is adequate.

There are two types of strawberry plants. The first are those classified as “day-neutral.” Day-neutral varieties of strawberries will set Choose a sunny position for your strawberry fruit regardless of how long or short the day is. growing area. The second type of strawberry plant is the “short day” type. This type of strawberry has its flowering regulated by the length of the day. Alternatively, you can use a black plastic or weed mat with the strawberry plant planted through a small hole. If you choose this option, please keep in mind the need to recycle the plastic or weed mat when it comes to the end of its useful life. When the berries start to form, cover the bed with netting to prevent bird loss. This can be a challenge with hanging baskets, so if you do use hanging baskets, be aware the birds will be on the lookout for ripe berries. Strawberries will need watering as dry weather sets in. A good way is with a drip irrigation to the top of the roots. If you are using a garden hose, water around the roots, not on the ripening fruit. A monthly feed with an organic liquid fertiliser (worm/seaweed/comfrey tea) or a dilute off-the-shelf liquid fertiliser is a good idea to keep the fruit coming. Take care your fertilisers are not high in nitrogen. Too much nitrogen will promote leafy growth and not flowers or fruit.

SAVING IN WINTER WITH SOLAR Winter. A time for seeing if knitwear still fits, heart-warming stews and snuggling up by the fire on those cold winter nights. Even though winter has its perks, winter also comes with muddy gumboots, wet washing, and the all-too expected power bill increase. While we can’t do anything about the mud, Solarcraft- solar power system specialists - can help curb the power bill increase that comes from turning the heat pump up full blast and running the dryer non-stop. HOW CAN YOU MAKE A SAVING IN WINTER WITH A SOLAR POWER SYSTEM? Local Tim Dudek from Solarcraft, has been designing and installing solar power systems in Auckland, Omaha, Matakana and beyond for over 10 years. He says it is important to get a system that covers your daytime load. “The more power you can use during the day rather than at night the better, as this is when your system is producing power. Doing things like putting the washing on before work or heating the spa and swimming pool during the day will help”. Another great way to save over winter is

specialise in off-grid, hybrid and grid-tied

While solar production is less in winter than in summer, it is important to look at your power savings across the whole year. Off-grid systems will need enough solar power to get through winter, whereas grid-tied systems may be able to use summer assets to offset winter. Thankfully across all systems, solar panels have never been more affordable; meaning the return on investment for solar owners has never been faster (as fast as five years to pay for itself).

JUNCTION AWARD WINNER 2022: WARKWORTH BUTCHERY Nine years ago, Rob and Renee Lees jumped at an opportunity to purchase a butchery building that had been around for the last 100 years. Words Kate Moore

Rob and Renee, along with their three children and 15 years of butchery experience, relocated from Christchurch to Warkworth with a dream to provide good quality meat to a growing community. A traditional butchery with meat cut every way, the dedicated staff at Warkworth Butchery have the expertise and knowledge to suggest flavours that perfectly complement the meat, cooking times to ensure perfection, and which type of cut will work best for the recipe.

Constantly increasing their knowledge is something that Rob and his staff are passionate about. They do this by putting staff members through apprenticeships or throwing their names into nationwide industry competitions, but it also relates to customer service. The instant a customer walks through the door, they are greeted first by a tinkly bell and then by a staff member. The first conversation may be generic, but because of the combined quality of meat and service, the next time that customer walks through

the door, Rob says, “the conversation continues... instead of the old how’s your day going, it is more like how was camp last week or how is the new job? We genuinely know them and vice versa – i’ll be asked about my interests, family, and the boys!” Doing the simple things right and giving customers their undivided attention is reaping benefits. They adopted a slightly old-fashioned “you ring and we bring” strategy, which continued even after things reverted back to the new normal, allowing customers to have their high-quality meat delivered. OVERALL RUNNER UP FOUR LITTLE BIRDS PATISSERIE AND CAKES Diana Langton spent her childhood under a big tree in her yard, dreaming of a future where she could create incredible cakes for customers that would become regulars. Little did she know that those weekends spent baking in the kitchen with her dad perfecting scone recipes and experimenting with flavours would evolve into a business run on passion, love, and repeat business. Four Little Birds is a small family-run business located in the small town of Kaiwaka, where all cakes, doughnuts, fillings, and curds are created by owner and head pastry chef Diana. Diana is very passionate about custom-made specialty cakes, allowing her to combine her love of combining art with food. Four little Birds is two businesses run as one – the Patisserie and the Custom Cakes. The Patisserie is currently open three days a week. It stocks the famous doughnuts and delicious goodies, but 2022 is the year for expansion, and Diana is hiring a small team to increase these days to five– once she is fully confident that the team can consistently meet her high standard of baked goods. By expanding the patisserie side of the business, Diana will be able to concentrate on creating more custom cakes and sweet catering. www.facebook.com/fourlittlebirdspatisserieandcakes

2022 JUNCTION AWARDS TROPHY DESIGNER – MATAKANA METAL WORKS Words Kate Moore

Just past Matakana Village, as you drive down a gravel driveway lined with towering trees covered in autumnal beauty, the countryside is quietly interrupted by the soft hum of a welding machine. Tucked away in his workshop Craig Pierce from Matakana Metal Works lets sparks fly as he welds the individual pieces together to make the desirable J trophy for the upcoming 2022 Junction Awards. The work of art started as two laser cut ‘J’ shapes, and then Craig rolled a 19mm wide strip around the edges, making the two pieces one. After welding it together, Craig sanded it smooth before polishing the piece to shining glory so that it would glint and shimmer proudly. The Corten steel used to fabricate the award will turn a stunning rust colour over the next few months as the patina changes. The lucky recipient of the prize can even have Craig insert a metal rod in the base, providing more opportunities where it can be displayed around the home or garden. Matakana Metal Works is a local company that can create anything out of steel. With years of engineering experience under his belt, Craig can see what will work in a space and then provide the expertise to construct a unique, bespoke piece. If you have an idea you want to discuss, wish to be inspired, or would like to see how a practical piece can also become a feature piece, check out their Instagram. www.instagram.com/matakana_metal_works craig@mmw.kiwi

WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU HAD EXTRA TIME? Imagine if you could free up an hour or three every week. What would you do? The options are endless. How do you get this extra time though? Brad and Holly Grimmer

Holly Grimmer stumbled across a pop-up ad on Facebook during 2020 – just after the first lockdown – recruiting people to become Virtual Assistants, and she thought to herself, “I could do this.” Holly’s working background has always been in customer operations and business administration. Using her extensive knowledge, she has worked with some incredible brands in New Zealand and overseas, such as High-Performance Sport, My Food Bag and Nielson. She is passionate about consulting with customers about what they want and then working with them to create a personalised strategy to achieve their goals. Six months after Holly jumped into the deep end, her husband Brad left his job in sports management and joined Holly in the business. Brad is now a certified bookkeeper

and his expertise lies in the numbers as his analytical nature shines through. Brad is also used to working in various sporting establishments. As there is “never any money in those,” Brad is deft at running a business on “the smell of an oily rag,” which is fruitful for their clients as it means that no matter the budget there are usually ways Brad can assist.” The lovely Anna has also joined The House of VA to complement this dynamic duo. As she resides in the South Island, Anna brings a different location and mindset to the VA table but is also a “super-efficient do-er extraordinaire” and helps bring strategies to life. The House of VA focuses on offering support to small and medium businesses worldwide. As Holly explains, “all businesses face the

same issues no matter their size, and larger companies usually have more substantial budgets and, therefore, more resources.” The House of VA seeks to level the playing field by “helping their clients build proper foundations, and ensuring they have the correct systems and processes to grow.” Holly and Brad have travelled the world together and learnt very quickly on the other side of the world that communication is essential in any relationship. They have used this knowledge to create the perfect husband and wife team that genuinely want to help people free up their time. By creating The House of VA, they can allow others to spend more time on the things they love instead of the things they have to do. www.thehouseofva.com info@thehouseofva.com

TOGETHER IS BETTER With the last couple of years being disruptive for businesses and with so many staff ‘working from home’ rather than together under the one roof, the concept of team building has never been more relevant. Words Milly Nolan

The adage ‘those who grow together will win together’ is what Let Me Out has based their entire business on. They epitomise what team building is all about, offering an extensive range of exciting, off-the-shelf and tailored activities for businesses sized from ten people to over a thousand, helping develop trust while working on teamwork, communication and connectedness. Although Let Me Out headquarters is based in Waiheke Island, the experienced staff facilitate team building experiences throughout Auckland, Matakana and Waiheke. While there is a full range of team building packages to choose from, Let Me Out can also create a bespoke event to align with the company's objective and organisational strategy. Whether a business is trying to find a competitive edge in the market, improve team dynamics or simply reward staff for their hard work, Let Me Out can provide a targeted solution.

The beautiful Matakana region has proven to be a hot spot for team building events, and Let Me Out has previously partnered with local venues such as Sculptureum, Riverside Matakana, Woodhouse Mountain Lodge and Plume Villas to name a few – all of which have offered a great day out of the office for the likes of team building, conferences, business planning, presentations, recognition and more. The rising desire for corporate retreat packages has also been recognised by Let Me Out – whether it is personalised away days, overnight stays or wellness retreats – all of which help create the right conditions for tackling tough business problems. Activities such as mindfulness practices or even team yoga have been popular to promote mental wellbeing in a team. Again, reiterating the idea that a company is only as extraordinary as its people. www.letmeout.co.nz

FRAGILE STRENGTH In 2014 Desiree Alexandre had an epiphany that she was living her life all wrong. Despite having a corporate administrative job, all she wanted to do was let her creativity flow and paint all day long. Deciding to follow her passion, she packed up her home in Auckland and moved to the smaller town of Wellsford to intentionally slow her pace and spend her whole day painting pictures. Words Kate Moore

Desiree's art style has been described by others as a little bit like ‘cake’ as “it is all very nice and sweet and there is nothing offensive about it,” she says. It is also tactile, meaning that you can touch and feel the texture. "My stepmother is blind, which is why I do it this way," says Desiree. She explains how wonderful it feels when autistic children see her art. "I take the paintings off the wall for them to touch, and it is just magical to watch." To create her works, she puts lace over the canvas and then paints on top – usually in a dark or metallic colour. Then

depending on what she thinks it needs, she may paint an image over the altered lace, but sometimes she leaves it as it is. Desiree states that she enjoys "changing something that is seen as soft and delicate to something that appears strong and solid." It took years for Desiree to discover her style and confidence, and to find it, she went completely offline for four years. By removing herself from the art world she was able to discover who she was as an artist as she didn’t want anyone else to influence her.

“I am proud that no one else has my painting style. It's all mine,” she says. Her unique approach has seen her paintings adorn walls all over the globe. Desiree may be small in stature (she is 154cm tall), but as an artist, she creates big and bold pieces that fill her house. She says this works well for her, though, as it means she can't keep many. Sometimes, the exceptional ones may be hung and admired on her walls for a month or so. She also keeps a journal filled with photographs of

her pieces that she can look at if need be. Her favourite work she has ever created was 122cm tall and 92cm wide and titled 'Mother Nature.' In this painting, the lace in the background shimmers gold; there is a silhouette of a lady with her feet turning into roots and her upturned arms into branches – not standard branches, however, "they are filled with koros, and little swirls pop up out from all over them." To view any of Desiree's available artwork, pop into OWL Community Arts Hub in Wellsford. There are only a few, but stay tuned for new ones. Delightfuldesigns.desiree@gmail.com

LISTENING TO LIFE What happened to the promising boxer who ventured into Tapu Bush? Where are the lost babies of Paparoa buried and why? Five locals tell their stories in a new audio recording, ‘Forgotten Tales of the Kaipara’. Whilst working for The Kauri Museum in 2021, Matakohe-based artist Luciana Orr recognised that a wealth of knowledge held by longstanding members of the community was fast disappearing. So she set about talking to locals about their lives and what life on the Kaipara was like in times not long past. These interviews were recorded and compiled into 45 minutes of easy listening. “These stories and reflections are both interesting and important. I wanted to make them accessible and create a record of time, people and place.” Ngāti Whātua Kaumātua, Ben Hita, generously shares his stories of growing up in an isolated community at Poutō. Back then, transportation was by foot and horseback, and traditional ways were part of everyday life.

"Our job at night was to catch the eels and the old people would come in and split them all. They were huge. They would have been 200 round, you know, big horns on their heads. We were told not to handle them…”

TRAILNAV CHALLENGE Looking for a new challenge? Love being outdoors in nature? Love hiking or trail running? Have a sense of direction? Or maybe no sense of direction but definitely a sense of adventure? Either way, a TrailNav Challenge is just the thing for you. Words Milly Nolan

A TrailNav Challenge event (some call this a rogaine) is a solo or team navigation challenge for families, schools, social or corporate. You can compete in a 6, 3 hour or 90 minute challenge. This is the perfect mix of team work, personal challenge, strategy and enjoying the outdoors. You are given a map and the challenge involves navigating around the area (if you can read a street map or zoo map, you’ll be fine) and finding checkpoints identified on a map to gain the most points. Some are easy (you get there, you get points, end of story), and others have awesome mystery activities that give you extra points. These mystery activities are a mix of brain power or skill and in the past there’s been activities like giant slingshot, blindfolded egg and spoon obstacle course, crafting something out of a wire coat hanger or a set of puzzle games. You can choose to go fast for easy points or do it a bit slower, collecting the closer checkpoints with added mysteries to get more points. The distance you cover will depend on how you plan your route but, fast or slow, far or not so far, having fun is guaranteed. Spot prizes will be drawn at random and a BBQ provided post-race. SENSE OF PURPOSE The New Zealand Cadet Forces is a voluntary, uniformed organisation which provides military-style leadership, personal development opportunities and adventure based training to youth aged between 13 and 19 years old. The Cadet Forces' aim is to instill leadership and honourable values in youth so as to develop and enable self-disciplined, confident and responsible young New Zealanders, who come out feeling stronger than ever, and are armed with skill sets that will last them a lifetime. Cadets have the opportunity to take part in unique adventurous, fulfilling and educational activities in a military-like environment. Through these activities, cadets get the chance to develop a sense of purpose, responsibility, self confidence, self respect, self discipline, self reliance, leadership ability, and commitment to voluntary service. For over a year now, Mangawhai Army Cadets and Mangawhai St John Cadets have been collaborating and assisting each other. They work on leadership and communication skills together and assist each other with specific skill sets such as First Aid and situational awareness. The combined structure of the two Cadet Forces has seen a significant increase in skills learnt, social interaction and pride

itc.co.nz

in each Cadet. Both Cadet groups enjoy outdoor crafts such as camping, hiking and orienteering. They also learn skills such as how to be a leader as well as how to work in a team, along with communication in all forms. Basic life skills such as washing, ironing, cooking, car maintenance, CV writing and interviewing all help towards self discipline, as well as supporting their futures - giving them credentials which universities, employers and organisations will look for. Both Cadets work in the local community with jobs such as helping the RSA, helping clean up after storms, assisting other local groups and training others in different skills. Learning how to pay respect to others as well as gain it, is an important aspect of their training. At the beginning of this year, the Mangawhai Army Cadets launched its recruitment program which was nine weeks of basic training. 20 Cadets signed up and completed the course graduating from the recruit program into the full Cadet program. During the nine weeks, the recruits learnt what a code of conduct was and why it was important in their everyday lives, teamwork

and how it’s about everyone making it across the finish line, communication and how to use it effectively, leadership and what different styles there are and how it can affect others, and also how to get the best out of their team mates. There were drills, cooking and physical testing which included a 50m swim, 3.4km run, push ups, curl ups and stretches. Mangawhai St John Cadets took many hits with Covid, but the division is still going strong. A new way of teaching, new activities, new leaders and a strong sense of belonging and friendship have relaunched the division in a great space. This term they are concentrating on communication skills and are off to their first camp in three years. If you have a 6-18 year old who wants to have fun, make friends, go to camps and learn without being bored Mangwawhai St John Youth is the place for them. If you have a 13-19 year old who would cope well with structure, formal lessons and physical training, then why not give the Mangawhai Army Cadets a go. Anastasia.tinsel@cadetforces.org.nz
