Matakana resident, Brock Gilchrist, won nine races out of 18 starts this season and, despite nursing a struggling car to 17th place in the final race, he was still crowned Toyota 86 Champion for 2023. “I’m stoked!” he says. “I had a big confidence boost after the first round when I got the first pole position and won two races.”

The prize for the Toyota 86 Champion is an all-expenses-paid trip to race in Germany at the iconic Nürburgring track. “We’ve got two one-hour races over there in a full Supra GT4 field. It's going to be heaps of fun. Hopefully we’re fast,” he laughs. He will only be in Germany for a week, with two practise days and a weekend of racing. A new car, a new track, and his first time in Europe should all add to the challenge for Brock. “From what

On track for successBrock Gilchrist

Toyota 86 Champion and Matakana resident, Brock Gilchrist, has been driving since he was four. Hoping to race next in Australia and move onto Porsches, he’d happily drive any race car, as long as he was getting paid to do it.

I’ve seen, they’re also a bit rougher than we are here so it should be pretty interesting.”

Like most race drivers, Brock got his start in go-karts and worked his way up. “I started at about four-years-old, and learned racing in the karts, and then I stepped up to a car when I was about 14 or 15 years old. I was very lucky to be able to get into a race car at such a young age – I didn’t even have my driver’s licence!”

His outstanding season also resulted in Brock being selected by the Tony Quinn Foundation as winner of the Ampol Red Bull Racing Gen 3 Camaro Supercar test. He’ll travel to Brisbane for a trial drive in the Camaro Supercar and meet a hero of his, Shane van Gisbergen. “It’s a test in the car to see what it’s like to drive. It’s one of the top levels

of motorsport in Australia so you don’t get an opportunity like that very often.” Driving Supercars would be a dream destination for Brock, but, he says, “If I could be paid to drive any race car, I wouldn’t complain.”

Motor racing in New Zealand is said to be very competitive and Brock agrees. “In the Toyota 86 Championship, the times were all so close. In qualifying, the top 10 drivers were within about a half-second of each other. Making up one-tenth of a second can get you into P1,” (first place on the sta rting pole).

The motivation to keep turning up to race day for Brock is a mixture of emotion and technical approach. “I just love the atmosphere, the feel of speed, and you can’t beat that winning feeling. When you’ve

done it once, you want to do it again.” To keep improving, however, Brock and his team have to put in some time analysing the data from the cars’ onboard computers. “We can see where I was turning, braking, accelerating, and things like that, but we can see what the other cars were doing too, so I can work out how to take a corner better and get around the track faster.”

Next season’s racing plans are uncertain for Brock at this stage. “I’d like to try and race in Aussie. The Porsche series is where I would like to get to, but finding the funding to get over and do it is quite challenging.” Brock is planning on applying for the Team Porsche New Zealand scholarship, and winning that would be a huge boost to his dream. The scholarship has previously included a ‘shoot out’ where the top candidates each try and post their best lap time, and that is a consideration in the selection of the win ning candidate.

Should Brock get to race in the Porsche series in Australia next year, there is then the prospect of racing Porsches in Europe and from there... who knows? For now, he’s just looking forward to making the most of the opportunity to race in Germany and trying out the Supercar in Brisbane. Next year is further down the track.

2023 JUNCTION AWARDS WINNER

Country Retreat Animal Sanctuary

Having always done rescue on a small scale, in 2019 Helen and Gavin started to increase their rescue numbers. In 2020 they became a registered charity and worked towards developing the areas they have now. Since 2019 they have rescued and rehomed nearly 600 pups and dogs, which is an extraordinary achievement. “We focus mainly on pregnant mums and very young puppies as these are two areas that are at high risk,” says Helen. “Unfortunately the mums and pups are often destroyed, as council facilities and lots of other rescues don’t have the resources needed to help them.”

With the cost of living increasing, rehoming is proving more and more difficult. “People cannot afford to look after a dog, and for people who already have them, they now cannot afford to keep them and surrender them to rescues. Also raising funds feels almost impossible at the moment, and all our rescues are fully vaccinated, desexed, flea and worm treated, which is very expensive. Plus often rescues come to us with many different injuries and may have

been neglected which often requires vet treatments. We are one-hundred-percent non-profit, everything goes directly to t he sanctuary.”

Winning this award means the world to Helen and Gavin and all who work at the sanctuary, because, Helen says, it means that people are acknowledging that they are out there rescuing and rehoming. “The support from our local community is amazing, we have many volunteers who give up their time to come and help us clean, feed, exercise, socialise, and cuddle these rescues. They are invaluable and we could not do what we do without this support.” They are also fortunate to have lots of people in the local community who help raise funds, assist with donations, as well as sourcing items they need for the sanctuary. “We are truly blessed to live in such a wonderful community and I wish I could thank everyone personally for their help,” says Helen.

Hopes for the future, Helen says, are not to be needed, that animal rescue becomes a thing of the past and that legislation would

change and it becomes mandatory to desex your dogs unless you are a licensed breeder. Also now increasing their scope to develop an old dogs area, Country Retreat soldiers on despite the challenges because it’s worth it just to see the happiness and joy, not just on the faces of the rescued dogs and pups, but also on the faces of people and families that adopt them. “It's great to hear of the stories and adventures our extended families have with their rescues. How not only the dogs that are broken get fixed with love, but often so do the people and families who adopt them. It's great to see.”

Warkworth Butchery

Runner up this year is Warkworth

Butchery, a local business committed to community and customer service.

Soon to be celebrating their 10th year in business, Warkworth Butchery is the Junction Awards runner up. A firm community favourite, owner Rob says, “The local and wider community here is amazing. I find we work closely with a lot of sports clubs sponsorship, selling stall holders merchandise in store, supplying local cafes and restaurants. Without each other there is no chance to network and grow. I feel Mahurangi is a big part of what makes the world go round.”

Passionate about butchery, Rob says ultimately the business thrives on recognition and complimentary chat from the customers as well as industry players, and his staff are known for their level of service. Both friendly and knowledgeable, he says the award is credit to them and their “one-hundred-percent genuine rapport with customers”.

Hindered only by the convenience of location, and the ever changing main-drag of Warkworth, the future plans are to continue to be a staple part of the street, striving to do more than the year before, and to continue to give back to the community and the trade via kids sports sponsorship, and offering apprenticeships.

NON-PROFIT OF THE YEAR - SOUTH

Country Retreat Animal Sanctuary

Country Retreat Animal Sanctuary rescues and rehomes puppies and dogs, and is soon going to create a space for old dogs who just need to live out their days in comfort. It provides a much-needed sanctuary for dogs that have been neglected or mistreated, or just need a new lovi ng home.

The sanctuary takes donations of old towels, blankets, toys, leads, dog and puppy equipment, crates, beds etc, most of which it uses on a daily basis; anything else is given away to people who need them. And all the items are recycled as much as possible. The food is donated on a regular basis and has to be collected from over an hour's drive away –this is to make use of food that would otherwise end up in landfills.

Since 2019 Country Retreat has rescued and rehomed nearly 600 pups and dogs. Reliant on its volunteers, one-hundred-percent of any money they receive goes directly into the sanctuary.

Mangawhai Activity Zone Charitable Trust

The Mangawhai Activity Zone has become an iconic feature of the Mangawhai landscape and a valuable facility for the whole community and beyond. Run voluntarily by a committee of eight, who collectively provide hours of service each week to manage the facilities, the area, now recognised far and wide as MAZ, was created in 2009.

Chair of the committee, Kate Arbuckle, says that the community itself has played a huge part in the park’s progression. “We would like to acknowledge and thank all our community businesses and individuals who support the park, by volunteering their time to help maintain the park, providing skilled expertise and labour at discounted rates, and donating funds through grants and individual donations.”

From an environmental perspective, MAZ gives great consideration to not only the use of equipment, but how well it fits in with the very natural landscape. The park is surrounded by mature native bush, supported by recently planted native slopes and wetlands. Bush walks provide a popular alternative to swings and seesaws. And they are working with the council and Sustainable Kaipara to ensure it is a waste-free environment for all to enjoy.

WRW Award Creation

WRW & Co Furniture was asked to design the Junction Award this year. Founder William Worsp talks about the process.

WRW furniture is designed and made in New Zealand by a team of qualified craftsmen. Timeless, functional, and well-made, they are devoted to the development of origi nal design.

“We were honoured to be asked if we would like to create this year's Junction award,” says William. “After the brief was given, it was simple, we needed to create the piece with our favourite timber in mind, which is walnut. We selected a piece with a bit of character grain and went to work roughly cutting the shape with a jigsaw then a router and then all finished by hand to create the final product.”

Like with many new projects, big or small, William says, they like to be challenged, and design is such an iterative process and essentially about problem solving. “When a new job or project comes up, or one of our design sessions, I’ll often think through many different possible solutions – yet interestingly enough, I often end up going back to my initial idea. Because every piece is essentially a new creation, having confidence in yourself is re ally important.”

He says it is the people who live in the area and come to the movies that keep the business running outside of holiday times. And he says the cinema enjoys supporting local fundraising initiatives, schools, and working with other local businesses. Adding two more cinemas is something Dan would love to do. “We also want to give some upgrades to the projection and sound equipment in the Tivoli Theatre too; did someone say laser?”

Pete & Mary's Eatery Cafés, Restaurants & Cellar Doors

Having both worked in the hospitality industry for 20 years, Suz and Tim were keen to open a café of their own. So in 2019 they purchased Pete & Mary’s, which they say was a dream come true. Despite challenging times, they are focused on doing the best they can to serve great food and coffee, and to provide a wonderful experience for each person who walks through the doors. There is the possibility of expanding one day, if the time is right, but for now they are “happy with our little space on the map”.

Mangawhai Tavern Markets

Entertainment & Tourism

Mangawhai Tavern Markets was created by Mike and Ness to provide a space for everyone to come together and support local artisans. They say that “to be nominated for the award is a humbling recognition from the community and our market families”. It is a compost-focussed market that they started back in 2019, in which all food vendors are required to have compostable-only service items for their food offerings at the market. They also encourage everyone to bring their own bags and coffee cups. “Our local community is our business. Seventy-percent of our vendors are locals, and the revenue from our locals mostly stays within the community.”

Bennetts of Mangawhai Cafés, Restaurants & Cellar Doors

The café started when Mary and Clayton Bennett wanted a space where chocolate lovers could sit and enjoy chocolate over a cup of tea or coffee. The café quickly became a destination in itself and is now a meeting point for locals and tourists alike. The local community is at the core of the business, and they strive to build strong relationships with the community as well as support local schools, charities and events. Their plan for the future is to continue to make delicious chocolate, and next year they intend to open a bakery to run alongside the café.

Bennetts of Mangawhai Food, Beverages & Growers

Inspired by a love for chocolate and a desire to make people happy, as well as the natural beauty and richness of Northland, the Bennetts moved from Dublin to Mangawhai to pursue their dream of making artisan chocolate with a New Zealand twist. Since Lynn, the chocolatier, arrived from Belgium last year, Bennetts has been able to introduce lots of delicious new products. They choose ingredients that are not only delicious but also from known and sustainable sources. “We love that we know who grows the fruits that flavour our chocolates, and that we handharvest seawater for our salted chocolate from our local beach,” says Emily.

It had always been a dream of Kate’s to own a tattoo business, and two-and-a-half years ago it became a reality, thanks to a supportive community and an inspiring husband. Kate says her focus at ECM is on the experience they provide for clients, not just the service but the whole package. Challenged only by how busy they are and striking that work-life balance, further expansion is what’s next for ECM. They want to open another studio, and there are big plans for the piercing and jewellery side of the business.

Owner of the ‘best looking work van in the area”, Nicki says she wouldn’t be where she is without the support of the community. Turning to dog walking as a path back to the workforce following a head injury, Nicki soon realised the healing benefits of being in nature with the dogs, and so set up Doggy Bush Break. Despite the huge amount of driving she has to do every day, Nicki says it’s worth it to see the pure joy on the dogs’ faces when she arrives to collect them for their walks.

A Mua Ake – for the future

A new program addressing employment preparation at Springboard will better equip and empower the young people for successful and independent living.

A Mua Ake means 'for the future' in Te Reo Maori, and is the name of the new Employment Preparation at Springboard which focuses on equipping and empowering young people for successful and independent living. Their purpose is to see each young jobseeker (between the ages of 18 to 25 years) thrive by overcoming the challenges that hinder their progress towards a better future. These challenges may include anxiety, low selfconfidence, poor communication skills, or a fear of commitment. Additionally, many young individuals face difficulty in securing employment due to a lack of work experience reflected on their CVs, which makes it challenging for them to enter the job market.

To address these issues, A Mua Ake offers an eight-week Employment Preparation course which provides assistance to students in crafting effective resumes and cover letters, preparing for job interviews, and applying for suitable positions. While the practical aspects of job preparation are crucial, Springboard is driven by a deeper belief in supporting the overall well-being of each individual. “We encourage young people to reflect on fundamental questions such as, Who am I?, Who do I want to be?, and What do I have to contribute?” says Dan Gray, General Manager. “The crux of our program is about building a relationship with each individual; coaching, mentoring, asking questions, listening and giving feedback. We love that we can be in their corner, supporting them as they make this transition into adulthood and our support remains while they are in employment.”

The aim is to create a supportive environment where young individuals can explore their passions, develop self-confidence, discuss personal challenges, acquire new skills (such as at Sheepworld, in the café, or off-site), and recognise the valuable contribution they can make to the community.

Collaboration with businesses that share Springboard's vision and are invested in the lives of young people, play a vital role in helping these individuals achieve their employment goals. These businesses contribute by offering work experience opportunities or providing employment to entry-level workers. By investing in and patiently training young employees, they contribute to the creation of a community where these individuals can belong and find a sense of purpose.

Matakana Junior Artisans' Market Made and managed by kids

Two enterprising local kids, Izzy Wagstaff and Lucy Howlett, invite all young creatives to showcase their skills and products in the first Matakana Junior Artisans' Market, happening in August.

This vibrant event will be held on Sunday 13 August, from 10am-3pm, at the Matakana Hall, and what is so unique about this market is that all stalls must be run and managed by the kids themselves. Izzy and Lucy extend a warm invitation to young entrepreneurs in the area, urging them to seize this opportunity performing or busking to showcase their creations and adventurous spirit. Whether it's selling art, baking, plants, slime, or even second-hand books and toys, there's a place for every young talent to shine.

Additionally, local kids’ groups and sporting clubs are welcome to join the market to fundraise. This is a fantastic chance for these groups to not only raise funds but also to foster a spirit of community and collaboration among other young people.

The Matakana Junior Artisans' Market will also be a platform for philanthropy, as Izzy and Lucy are raising money for the Country Retreat Animal Sanctuary. By participating in this market, kids have the opportunity to contribute to a worthy cause and make a positive impact in their community.

To apply for a stall you can email Izzy and Lucy directly for an application form at the email below. Alternatively, you can find Izzy at Horizon School or Lucy at Matakana School for more information. Stall fees are $10 per table, and $20 for clubs and groups, stall applications close on Monday 7 August, so don't miss your chance to be a part of this incredible event.

Exciting prizes await those with the best stalls and most creative products, so bring your A-game and let your imagination go wild. Follow the event (Matakana Junior Artisan's Market) on Facebook for updates and further information.

Retreat rescue to cover pup

Introducing our cover star, Murphy. He’s one very lucky pup after being rescued by Helen and Gavin from Country Retreat Animal Sanctuary and finding his forever home with Jordan and Rob.

Thankfully a member of the public who spotted Murphy’s mum, Luna, looking frail and lost, alerted Helen and Gavin; and so the hunt began. After discovering a rope where it appeared Luna had been tied to a tree and abandoned, Helen and Gavin searched the surrounding area until they finally found Luna. Although she was thin and tired it was obvious to the couple that she had recently had babies or was expecting. A treacherous two-hour search up a steep, bush-covered hillside uncovered a litter of six pups, including Murphy, huddled in the hollowed-out part of a tree stump. Only days old, the pups along with their mum Luna, were brought back to health, by Helen and Gavin, like they’ve done for countless other animals, who put the dogs' needs ahead of their own.

After volunteering at the retreat, Jordan and Rob quickly fell in love with Murphy and the adoption was unanimous. When asked about the retreat and the work Helen and Gavin do, Jordan said, “It’s absolutely incredible, I honestly don’t know how they do it.” From hand-feeding pups every two hours overnight to numerous vet visits which result in unexpected bills, Helen and Gavin take it all on with smiles on their faces.

Flying solo

Back by popular demand, performing not just one night but two, Tiki Taane is at Leigh Sawmill this month, and due to his signature improv techniques, even he doesn’t know what to expect!

Words Emily Pattullo

Legendary 'one man band’ Tiki Taane is returning to Leigh Sawmill this month to give audiences a taste of his popular “live looping”. A predominantly improvised method of making and playing music, using looppedals and vibing off the general atmosphere on the night, Tiki says, “It’s different every time I perform, which means I don’t even know what to expect; anything can happen.”

It’s not Tiki’s first appearance at Leigh Sawmill, having played there several times since becoming a solo artist, but it is one of his favourite places to play in Aotearoa. Ti ki say s, “The Sawmill is always a fun vibe and is the best place to try new ideas and take more risks as a musician.”

Starting his music career in 1991, Tiki went on to become the live engineer and eventually frontman of Salmonella Dub in 1996. Then, in 2008, he released his first selfproduced track as a solo artist, Past Present Future, which was soon followed by Always on my Mind, the song that hit number one in the New Zealand music charts.

Just 11 years old when he knew music was what he wanted to do, Tiki now has children of his own and says he would be happy if they wanted to follow in his footsteps, “As long it’s what they’re passionate about. What’s most important is they create their own footsteps with what ignites their heart and soul." Drawing from his extensive experience in the industry, Tiki says his one piece of advice to his kids would be, "You can’t fly like an eagle if you’re knocking around with turkeys.”

Influenced by “anyone who makes music and art, no matter the genre and style”, Tiki is currently producing a band called Flaxxies, who he says “have a vibe”. As for his plans for the future, Tiki says they can be found on TIKIDUB where people can ‘Dubscribe’. Due to popular demand, Tiki has extended his one night performance at Leigh Sawmill, to two nights, and says he is “so amped and super grateful for having such a solid fan base after all these years”.

Voice of the wind

The eighth Brick Bay folly architectural design project is complete and open to visitors.

Photos Sam Hartnett

The 6.5m-high, A-frame structure, Te Reo o te Hau (Voice of the Kōkōhau), was designed by four architectural graduates of Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington School of Architecture, and provides a spectacular entrance to Brick Bay. Despite living in Wellington and Christchurch, these four young architects were driven to explore a local story about the voice of the wind. This wind (kōkōhau in te reo Māori) is called Mangatāwhiri – the breeze that sweeps across the bay of nearby Omaha.

The team’s proposal says it well: “The wind holds many stories as it sweeps through. It speaks of the health and wellbeing of

the people, the moana, and the whenua. Without the wind, we would be breathless, birds would not fly, seeds would not spread, oceans would be lifeless and our people would not be prosperous. The wind has a voice. It echoes our past, voices our present, and opens to our future. This project asks you to listen to the voice of the wind, and explore the kōrero it has with the surroundings.”

Voice of the Kōkōhau uses layers of recycled kwila shingles, strung in a way to allow precisely enough movement to enable a subtle kinetic effect, creating a soft clatter of timber like an earthly wind-chime. The ordered assemblage of layered shingles is

painted in a multi-coloured palette and each one inherits the role of a feather. Collectively, the impression of a kākahu (cloak) is created, appearing to drape over the structure, which grounds the structure within t he land.

One of the architects, William Creighton, explains, “As you enter, it’s like a cloak of manaaki, or support. It’s ephemeral but also grounded in the cultural narrative of the site. Nearby Te Hauturu-o-Toi (Little Barrier) is the final resting place of the God of Wind and a cloud rests over it, almost like a crown.”

The concept, deeply informed by mātauranga Māori, involved consultation with local iwi Ngāti Manuhiri to ensure the subject matter was handled correctly, and with cultural sensitivity. Architect and folly competition chair, Pip Cheshire, says, “This year’s folly has a strong idea founded on the cultural history of the site, a complex logistical exercise involving a team strung out over the lower half of the country and a do-or-die goal of harnessing the wind. It is a fine piece.”

Explore the folly along the famous Brick Bay Sculpture Trail. Entry to the trail is just $12 for adults with discounts for kids and pensioners. Family passes are also available at $35 each. Brick Bay is open seven days a week.

A taste of home

Originally from Canada, Jodi found herself longing for the warmth of family traditions and the flavours of home after moving to New Zealand. Missing her role as an auntie and baking family treats, she tried to recreate her favourite recipes abroad. And so Auntie Jodi’s Baking Co. was born.

One wet summer weekend, Jodi found herself in the kitchen where she decided to bake a delicious pumpkin pie, then a loaf, realising that the feeling of home was just a slice away. Both items were an instant hit when shared with friends at a dinner party. Encouraged by the positive feedback, Jodi decided to turn her passion for pumpkin spice into a business venture and began on a mission to bring a taste of the northern hemisphere to the south, thus creating Au ntie Jodi’ s Baking Co.

With love and nostalgia as her guiding forces, Jodi crafted ready-to-go pumpkin baking kits that captured the essence of her Canadian upbringing. Each kit contains all the dry ingredients to create mouth-watering pumpkin treats; featuring dried pumpkin, which takes out the work of needing to roast, then puree a pumpkin to bake with, along with organic spices. “Just add the required wet ingredients such as water, milk and eggs to get baking. Perfect for any foodie or baker of all levels,” says Jodi. “Travel to

new territory through the power of your taste buds, all without leaving your kitchen.”

As the crisp air creeps across New Zealand, there's no better time to indulge in the warm enchanting flavours of pumpkin spice. Elevate your taste buds with this North American treat and immerse yourself with Auntie Jodi’s irresistible pumpkin pie and delectable pumpkin loaf. Together, the combination of Auntie’s special spices intertwines with the pumpkin, creating a harmonious blend that is both comforting and indulgent. The natural sweetness of the pumpkin shines through, perfectly complemented by the aromatic spices. Be sure to follow along as the collection of treats expand with more classic North American dishes. Available for purchase from the online store or join Auntie Jodi’s Baking Co. on social media to see what local markets they will be visiting next.

End of life care

Sharleen Greer was recently forced to confront these realities with the distressing passing of her mother. Realising that forward planning for this inevitable event would have made a huge difference to everyone’s experience, she trained as a funeral celebrant and endof-life doula. Sharleen now offers an empathetic, informed and individual service to enable others to have control and choice for their end-of-life planning.

In the Western world, death tends to be a taboo subject, but the narrative is changing. Conversations started not long ago with the End-of-Life bill and now there is ‘Barbie’s Bill’ – a petition under review in parliament to make Advanced Care Plans binding and accessible in a database.

‘The Silver Tsunami’ refers to the large number of Baby Boomers who are now reaching retirement age. “Caring for ageing parents and coping with their deaths can be very stressful and it also makes us consider our own mortality,” says Sharleen. “The current health infrastructure with insufficient hospital beds, expensive aged care facilities and low availability of palliative care doesn’t help.”

Is it time to bring dying and death back to the home?

“Most people would prefer to spend their last days at home surrounded by loved ones, but this rarely happens. Education, support and planning must be encouraged to increase the confidence and competency we need – and which is possible.”

To confidentially discuss your situation, get in touch wi th Sharleen.

Gardening calendar

Just when the rest of the garden is quiet, your citrus trees will be making a valuable contribution to the table. As will greens, brassicas, spring onions, peas and lettuces planted in autumn. Maybe a spot in the sun to enjoy a scone and your homemade jam is in order. Or a cheese and cracker with feijoa chutney!

Broad beans

Broad beans are not only a good crop to grow for the table but to build fertility in your soil. These vigorous nitrogen-fixing plants give back to the soil. They also produce a lot of valuable dry matter to put onto a compost heap after harvest is done.

Mid-winter is the last chance to plant broad beans before the rush of spring. They will prefer being planted into a free-draining garden soil with a pH above 6.5. Broad bean seeds will germinate at soil temperatures above 10°C, but bear in mind that a waterlogged soil will suppress soil temperature and make the seeds prone to rotting before they germinate. Plant seeds in a sunny position 4cm deep, spaced 20-25cm apart. Later in July think about planting out good mature seedlings instead of seed. Most broad beans are climbers and will grow 1.5-1.8m high. They will need support from a stake or trellises as they grow.

Harvest the young pods early to get tender green beans or leave them to mature into the more familiar large bean seed. The young green shoots are also edible. Keep picking regularly to prolong your harvest.

Mid-winter maintenance

July is a good time to clean up your garden in preparation for spring. Permanent structures like trellis’s can be cleaned up to remove old plants from autumn. Compost piles can be turned and brown matter like leaves, dead grasses, crop residues can be gathered up and stored in preparation for the next compost pile. Your deciduous fruit trees can be given a prune before the sap rises again in spring. A light pruning each year to keep the tree open and remove any dead wood is better than a heavy pruning required when the tree is left too long. Feijoas will not be dormant but can be given a light prune. Remove one or two large branches, taking no more than 30 percent of the volume, this lets light in and will encourage shoots to form.

The brief was to design a waterfront house in Whangateau with ample space for a family with three boys to play. Keeping it clean. Pure and simple. The Whangateau house, designed by Julian Guthrie Architecture, was commissioned around 10 years ago for a young family with three boys, as their holiday home. They had recently purchased the vacant lot adjoining the Omaha channel, deciding to move from Omaha to get the open space and direct access to the water for the family to play. The brief to the architects was to design a home that would provide ample space for the family and friends to holiday together;

with communal zones, and a variety of indoor and outdoor places to play or relax. The waterfront views are due east from the site, so the house needed to capture that aspect but also be open to afternoon sun as well as provide shelter from winds from se veral directions.

The architect’s design provides a set of three gable-roofed forms, reminiscent of simple boatshed or rural barns, spread across the width of the site to capture the views. The

central room contains the main living area, with a series of wide stacking glass doors and slatted shutters facing both east to the sea, and west to the landscape beyond. To the north end, a separate guest wing contains two generous guest bedrooms. To the south end, another gabled shed contains the primary bedroom and the boys’ bunk room, with other utility space between. On the western deck, there is also a separate games/media room, located to allow

some sound separation but with an easy connection across the decks to the other spaces. Also on the west deck is a covered pergola area with an outdoor fireplace adjoining a pool; capturing the sun later in the day and allowing views through the house out to the estuary. On the eastern deck, a recessed seating pit provides informal seating facing the sea, but with some protection from coastal breezes.

The home uses a simple mix of cedar wall linings, both outside and inside, contrasted with textured rendered block conveying a more solid effect. The sliding timber screens provide an elegant way to control sun and breezes into the home. Grey oiled oak flooring inside flows seamlessly out to weathered hardwood decking around the home. The kitchen and bathrooms feature extensive use of black slate slab and tiles, providing further texture and dark accent.

Built by Mark Lindsay Construction, who are based in the area but also build high-end homes around the wider Auckland regions, this home has a timeless quality, with the traditional rural building forms referencing the previous use of the land as orchards on the fertile peat soils of the Point Wells spit.

The weight of money

Fi Jamieson-Folland is The LifeStyle Aligner. She is a qualified osteopath, an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach, a speaker, educator, writer, certified raw vegan gluten-free chef, and a Health Brand Ambassador. Here she discusses the impacts of money stress.

What are some of the negative impacts of money stress on our health?

Money stress can have profound impacts on our physical and mental health. It has been linked to depression, insecurity, anxiety, and poor health outcomes, including heart disease. Increased levels of the stress hormone cortisol, which is often associated with financial strain, can negatively impact our mood, mental well-being, and cause sleep disturbances, headaches, stomach aches, muscle tension, difficulty in being intimate, lack of focus and motivation, as well as difficulty in completing tasks.

Why do people stress about money?

People stress about money for various reasons. Apart from the need to meet basic human needs like food and shelter, we are often bombarded with images and messages that portray a luxurious lifestyle. This can trigger feelings of inadequacy and jealousy, leading to financial stress. Additionally, factors such as low income, high debt, unexpected expenses, job loss, business collapse, poor money management and budgeting, unexpected life events, and a lack of financial knowledge can contribute to money-related stress.

What are ways to cope with money stress?

Coping with money stress involves taking several steps:

• Assess your financial situation, including seeking advice from a qualified professional, and create a budget.

• Reduce and prioritise your expenses. Identify areas where you can cut back and focus on essential needs.

• Track your spending to gain a better understanding of where your money is going.

Cosmetic

Such

• Develop a debt-reduction plan and start saving. This can provide a sense of control and security.

• Reach out for help. Consult financial advisors, credit counsellors, or support groups for guidance and assistance.

• Practise self-care, including managing your emotions. Engage in activities that help you relax, reduce stress, and maintain a positive mindset.

Is money worth the stress?

Money itself is just a tool and is not inherently worth the stress it can cause. However, having financial stability and security can provide comfort and peace of mind. It allows us to meet our basic needs and pursue experiences and goals that contribute to our happiness and fulfilment. It's important to remember that money is not everything and cannot buy love, friendship, or happiness. Focussing on the things that truly matter in life can lead to a more fulfilling and nourishing existence. Ultimately, whether money is worth the stress is a personal choice, and finding a balance that aligns with your values and priorities is crucial.

Maintaining your oral health is something that should be sustained for life. Brushing and flossing your teeth regularly can help prevent oral conditions like gum disease and bad breath.

In addition, the Dental Domain dentists recommend an exam and hygiene clean at least once a year.

What's more, some research suggests that gum disease may be associated with serious health conditions, such as Alzheimer's and heart disease, making oral care all the more important.

Winter is a time when illness rates tend to sky rocket. Bugs and viruses are floating around. Days off school and work. But, there are many things you can do to help mitigate the effects of winter, reduce the risk of getting sick and improve your overall feeling of health and well-being. Restore Physio has recommendations to help you kick start your immune system and chase those winter blues away, so you can thrive this winter rather than just survive.

Getting enough sleep, daylight and movement are the top three!

Viewing sunlight within the first few hours of waking creates an early spike in cortisol, which improves the activity of your immune system, kicks your metabolism into gear, helps you focus during the day and helps you sleep better that night. Evening light also helps to mitigate the negative effects of late night artificial light from screens.

Moving your body causes a release of endorphins in your body which improves mood, relieves pain and helps you sleep better at night.

Rise early and re-energise with a morning Pilates class or finish your day with an evening class, getting your dose of sunlight in the process.

Managing those niggles and injuries allows you to get outside and keep moving. See one of their experienced Physios for assessment and treatment to help keep you moving well, restore function and relieve pain.

Women supporting women

Local resident, Kate Sheehan has initiated something wonderful with women's-only group catch-ups, providing an opportunity for any and every woman to join and find encouragement and inspiration from one another. “With the community growing as fast as it is I’m noticing a lot of new faces around, so I want to get us all together to meet and unite and see where it takes us,” says Kate. Her goal is to empower and unite all women in whatever they choose, whether it be friendships, business networking, family, independence, or social activities.

Whatever the case may be, having a group of fabulous women around you is what e very woman needs, insists Kate.

This comes from a huge personal growth for herself in the last couple of years, both personally and with her business growing and becoming more popular. She attributes that growth to the incredible support network she has around her – her husband, family, and friends; her women. So, the idea behind the events she's organising is about bringing that same support to the wider community, building a bond with other women, and

allowing them to experience the same k ind of support.

The most recent event was a huge success, with over 80 women attending at 8 Wired Barrelworks & Tap Room on 7 May. The feedback has been so positive that Kate has now started a Facebook group for anyone interested in attending events.

The next event is 12-3pm, Sunday 23 July at 8 Wired Barrelworks & Tap Room. To join and find out more, visit the Facebook page. www.facebook.com/WomensGetTogether

Exotic haven

Gaby's journey towards rescuing exotic animals began in 2019 when she encountered a severely neglected leopard gecko named Phoenix. Despite the neglect Phoenix endured; Gaby's love and care nursed the gecko back to health, and today Phoenix thrives as a testament to Gaby's dedication. One of the most notable residents of Be Kind is Torvi, a one-legged bearded dragon who played a significant role in the initiative. Torvi's resilience and spirit inspired Gaby to establish Be Kind, creating a space where reptiles, amphibians, and even fish receive the attention and care they desperately need.

“Be Kind Exotic Animal Rescue goes beyond providing temporary shelter; its mission is to educate and engage the public about the proper care required for these unique creatures,” says Gaby. “I firmly believe that there is always room to learn, and through educational initiatives I hope to bridge the gap between people and exotic animals.”

Despite facing numerous challenges, including limited resources and regulatory restrictions, Be Kind has managed to secure an exemption that allows them to take in blue-tongued skinks, and other animals on Auckland Council's banned species list. This exceptional permission demonstrates the trust placed in Gaby's expertise and the exceptional standards of care maintained by the sanctuary.

Be Kind Exotic Animal Rescue strives to provide the best possible care for these often misunderstood creatures. By showcasing the love, time, and attention required to nurture reptiles back to health, Gaby hopes to change perceptions

Nestled on a quiet street in Warkworth, Gaby Bailey, a passionate animal lover, has created a sanctuary for neglected and mistreated reptiles. Established in 2022, Be Kind Exotic Animal Rescue has become a haven for reptiles, offering them a safe place until they can find their forever homes. Choose

and help people realise just surviving is not thriving when it comes to animal care. “My ultimate goal is to find forever homes for these animals, ensuring they receive the care and attention they deserve throughout their lives.”

Gaby's unwavering commitment and the tireless efforts of Be Kind Exotic Animal Rescue serves as an inspiration to animal lovers everywhere, reminding us that kindness knows no bounds when it comes to the welfare of all living beings.

Shipwrecks ahoy!

The aptly-named Wreck Bay and Boulder Bays are on the north side of Rangitoto Island, just to the west of Gardiner Gap on Motutapu, where the two islands find themselves almost kissing. This is where the ships of Auckland’s early days were sent to die. Mostly when they were half-dead already. For “This is a ships’ graveyard – but none of these ships were wrecked by bad weather or poor navigation. They were deliberately dum ped here.”

The ideas of ‘Reduce, Re-use and Recycle’ had a different meaning then. After their useful sailing life expired, the ships were mostly used as hulks – grimy floating warehouses, holding coal for the fireplaces of Auckland, or the growing city’s garbage or construction waste.

The Columbia was different: once she lost her masts, she was converted, in 1936, to a floating cabaret called ‘The Show Boat’, where Aucklanders partied up large. She was burned to the waterline at Boulder Bay in 1938. Large, splintered sections of her keel and lower ribs are still there to be seen.

The most intact of the wrecks is the Rarawa, a steel-hulled schooner-rigged twin-screw steamer, originally built in Dundee Scotland in 1903. She was filled with concrete and beached a little further west than Boulder Bay, during the Second World War.

The Dartford was a three-masted barque, also built from steel in Sunderland in the UK in 1877. She was used as a training ship 1908-1914. Then an Auckland hulk. Then beached at Boulder Bay in 1946.

The Duchess, aka Lady of the Gulf, was a ‘dainty little steamer’ and was one of the most elegant passenger steamers around, and for years did the Auckland-Waiheke Island run. She was unceremoniously stripped and beached in 1947.

Then there’s Polly, who ‘broke her back’ at Whangarei in 1908, and was burned off Boulder Bay in 1928. And Elinor Vernon; Gladbrook (ex County of Anglesea); Rothesay Bay (ex Activ); the luxury passenger ship Ngapuhi; Jubilee; Arapawa; and Northern Chief, one of the biggest ships built at Freeman’s Bay, Auckland. All now silently watched by the marine life of the bays; including the underwater snails who have their shells coloured red from the rusting ships.

There were 12 ships left there – possibly 13 – for the Clara Hargrave, previously Achilles, a wooden barque built in Boston in the USA in 1856, is thought to feature in an 1877 painting of Gardiner Gap. But no remains are to be found now. Perhaps she’s buried in the mud. But not all is lost. There are plenty of shipwreck skeleton bits to be found in and around Wreck Bay. But please, take no souvenirs, just leave them there: the Rangitoto Ships’ Graveyard is part of our maritime heritage and the site is protected.
