Who You Gonna Call? For many people, the idea of spending an evening in a dark and potentially haunted building is literally their worst nightmare. For Karen Williams and the rest of the team at Haunted New Zealand, it's simply doing what they love. In fact, the darker and more haunted, the better. Words Leah Botherway

Haunted New Zealand is a group of dedicated paranormal investigators with over 100 years of experience between them. Whilst they all have full-time careers outside of the organisation, they share a common passion and fascination for the supernatural and love to spend their spare time travelling around New Zealand investigating potentially haunted properties. Priding themselves on taking a pragmatic and scientific approach to every investigation, they understand that sometimes noises and other unexplained activity can be caused by something completely mundane, such as a draught or faulty appliance. It's only after ruling out any rational explanations that the team will start investigating the possibility of paranormal activity. The investigations are carried out using a range of data-capturing equipment such as video cameras, EMF (Electronic Magnetic Fields) Readers, high-definition audio recorders and what Karen believes to be the only GeoPort in Australasia. Multiple sets of this recording equipment are set up

throughout the property, which allows them to cross-reference and compare recordings to ensure they get the most precise reading. Set up as a community service that operates on a not-for-profit basis, everyone on the team does the work simply for the love of researching paranormal occurrences. They don't charge for their services and often spend their own money doing what they can to support historic and potentially haunted venues. They will hold community events where guests will join them for dinner and learn about the supernatural, sometimes even taking part in a mini-investigation. Most recently, they held a dinner and information evening at the Kentish Hotel in Waiuku, where they raised and donated $4,000. The team at Haunted New Zealand are not only providing a service to the community, but they also love to feed their own personal interest and work with property managers and local Councils to arrange visits to traditionally haunted public places. One of these places is the Puhoi Community Hall which has a reputation with spooked

locals as being haunted by a previous caretaker, with some even outright refusing to set foot on the property. On their most recent visit in April 2020, the team stayed overnight armed with their arsenal of recording equipment to see if they could get to the bottom of the local folklore. Whilst they insist that no one sinister is keeping an eye on the hall, several recordings of tapping and even video footage of equipment being moved were taken over the course of the evening. Always on the hunt for new properties to investigate, the Haunted New Zealand team would love to hear from you if you know of any location with a spooky reputation. Similarly, if you're experiencing unexplained happenings in your home or are concerned there may be paranormal activity, they would love to come to visit you so they can do what they can to help put your mind at ease. Haunted New Zealand can be contacted by email or via their Facebook page. team@hauntednz.com www.facebook.com/HauntedNZ

One in a Million Words Kate Moore

Professor Emeritus Louise Nicholson grew up hearing the words “education allows you to choose” and she took them to heart. The University of Auckland provided her with numerous qualifications and also introduced her to her sweetheart. Louise laughs while explaining that while she was very studious, Jon was not and that she remembers thinking that he must have thought she was “rather serious”. Love however bloomed between the library shelves. After completing a stint overseas at Oxford on a Rhodes Fellowship Louise came home and in the 1980s moved to Algies Bay – which is where she used to holiday with a school friend when she was five years old. She started teaching at Mahurangi College in the Science Department and was there until 1989 when she received a phone call suggesting a return to The University of Auckland with an opportunity to rewrite the first-year curriculum for the Faculty of Medicine, a course that is still used today. In early 1989 she was appointed Head of Biology for Medicine in the Department of Anatomy with Radiology, and then in the late

10

PROFILE

1990s Louise established an independent laboratory to continue her work on neurodegenerative diseases. Louise’s life was changed in 2007 when she headed out to the Karaka sale yards to drum up sponsorship for The Brain Bee Challenge, which is a nationwide competition for Year 11 students. She was there specifically to meet Catriona Williams who had endured a serious fall during a horse-riding competition and was now confined to a wheelchair due to a spinal cord injury. Louise left that meeting thinking about how “lives are shattered within a split second” and then started thinking about the body’s inflammatory responses and that in her lab there was potentially the knowledge to help repair spinal injuries and, ultimately, change people’s lives. This resulted in her co-founding a Spinal Cord Injury Research Facility within the University’s Centre for Brain Research in 2011, supported by the CatWalk Trust. 2014 was a year Louise and Jon were dealt a shocking blow, when after seven years of continuous awfully painful headaches it was

discovered that Louise had a brain tumour which would force her into early retirement. Louise is very matter of fact about it and describes it as “the best type of tumour in the worst possible place”. Regular MRIs allow Louise to keep track of the tumour that is currently the size of a bantam’s egg. An operation revealed that it is benign and not spreading. In Louise’s own words, “how lucky can you be?” Louise reluctantly left her second home in 2017 but left behind an amazingly generous gift in perpetuity to allow the research she and her team had started to continue. This gift allows a PhD student to be the pair of hands that she cannot provide in the Spinal Cord Injury Research Facility for a three to four-year term. Louise is very passionate and proud of this research and finding a cure would make her the “happiest person”, acknowledging that while there is an “enormous amount of work still to be done, we are making a real difference here in New Zealand”. www.fmhs.auckland.ac.nz/en/faculty/cbr/ourcentre/spinal-cord-injury-research-facility

Grow Your Wealth

Have you considered commercial property for building wealth? Kiwis have a long-standing passion for real estate with many new investors entering the market. 1. A stable asset. Property versus stocks offer different benefits and risks. But as a physical asset, commercial property feels stable, with a measure of control. Investors can physically inspect a property, select appropriate tenants, structure debt to suit, and negotiate favourable lease conditions. A skilled Asset Manager will assist. 2. Cost of dept is low. Low interest rates are making debt servicing manageable. But some eserve funds for protecting an asset from unforeseen events and ongoing maintenance is key. 3. Affordable? Viranda has been acquiring industrial buildings from $600k upwards. Compared to the feverish rise in residential prices, this can be a tangible market for many.

Shrink your stress! 4. Commercial Vs Residential Commercial property generally has larger earning potential. Recent figures suggest yields of approx. 4 to 6 percent in Auckland (after expenses) compared to residential, where 3 percent is deemed good (before expenses). Unlike residential, commercial returns are bolstered because the tenant pays for most of the operating expenses e.g. rates and insurances. Income is stable with lease agreements longer-term than residential e.g. 3 to 10 years. Rent is more regularly reviewed, whereas residential law changes have shrunk the opportunities to increase rent.

The Wow Factor Words Kate Moore

Darren Jessop, Director of Jessop Architects, believes that it is not until you fully arrive at this remarkable modern, coastal sanctuary that the house emerges in all its dramatic glory. The Auckland based owners stipulated that their holiday home be a low maintenance, simple home that would not only take full advantage of the striking scenery on all sides but also be strong against the harsh marine environment. To meet this vision the original building platform was ditched in favour of a new one 200m further up the hillside; this allowed the house

to nestle in the bush more, to offer a better windbreak as it is just below the peak of a knoll, and to provide the clients with the expansive views they desired. An unexpected benefit is that it now completely isolated it from the road below – it also added twelve months onto the project to get it just right. Unlike other properties that you drive up to, this remarkable home invites you to enter from behind. As you drive around the driveway to the back of the house, the large glass windows allow you to see right through this strong structure to the views

beyond. The dark cladding is crafted from an aluminium roofing material, which ripples in the sunlight and then, as the sun sets and the metal straightens back out the house, also adds a faint melodic verse to its repertoire of features. The landscaping, completed by Robin Shafer, continues with the low maintenance brief, with all plants chosen to withstand the coastal conditions. The 276sqm dwelling is almost completely encapsulated in full-height windows and glass doors that completely capture everything that Mother Nature has to offer.

Keeping it clean. Pure and simple. Let us enhance your new home with an environmentally Friendly, high quality water treatment system that allows you and your family to ‘Flush and forget’. Leaders in full-service wastewater treatment solutions

HOUSE

The doors can also be used to create different sized rooms depending on the number of occupants that are in the house at any one time; more importantly they protect them from both the onshore wind (northeast) and the prevailing wind (southwest). The house has been divided into two wings, to create a simple L shape. The first wing is the living wing, which holds the living space, lounge, and kitchen. Standing in the living room, you are treated to 280-degree views, with expansive sea views on one side and green, rolling farmland on the other. This wing has a commercial glass joinery that stands at an impressive 3.2m high. The covered outdoor kitchen is also located in this wing, complete with an outdoor fireplace that makes it ideal for all seasons. The second wing of the house contains four bedrooms, all positioned to provide stunning views. At the end point, you reach the grand, master ensuite, which has pride of place, taking in the best views over the pool out towards the Hen and Chicks, whilst offering complete privacy. The media room, or “snug” as Darren describes it, is situated at the apex of the two wings, and is a contrast to the rest of the house, with only one window – a vertical slither in the concrete wall. All in all, this home, while striking to look at, still manages to provide a relaxed, holiday aesthetic. Its simplistic design, set on an expansive five hectare site, provides a sanctuary for its owners, with extraordinary views out the windows that beg you to relax with a drink in hand and simply enjoy the space that has been so thoughtfully created. www.jessoparchitects.co.nz

specified by the developer, chances are it will already have small but adequate spaces that do have a good flow but think about how you can create flexible spaces and open up the “feel” by simplifying materials. Maximise your natural light by adding skylights if budget allows or choosing a colour palette that will help reflect light through the home. Add emotional warmth by replacing stark window treatments with softer ceiling to floor hung drapery, this will make a space feel larger and free energy up to pass through quietly. Natural textured rugs and soft furnishings will help to define zones and ground energy where a more relaxed vibe is desired. Fixtures and fittings such as tapware and handles can be replaced easily for little cost and for big impact. Once you have a great canvas that sets you on the right path of Chi, go ahead and get personal with accents of colour and objects of interest that speak to who you are. Remember the devil is in the detail, so be sure to create balance via subtle repetition of colour, texture, shape and form as this will help draw the eye through and aid the flow. Yellow brick clad and dated doors? No sweat... Bagging the brick with a soft white paint finish will literally transform the curb appeal.

69.7% of each day at home and indoors and the majority of that time is spent in our kitchen areas, so it’s not surprising that a good kitchen remodel can result in up to 54% ROI. But don’t panic! Even a slight remodel on a small budget is a good investment, if the layout is generally ok but it's looking a bit tired, think about updating hardware and lighting, respray cabinet fronts and change the countertops for a significant transformation.

What is the biggest return on investment when preparing to sell a home?

How do you ensure that your architecturally designed new build will stand the test of time? How do you future proof it?

This is a tricky question as each home is unique and therefore the requirement will depend on a multitude of considerations, such as the target audience, demographic and current property health and valuation. However, statistically speaking recent studies suggest that New Zealanders are spending

and universal design principles to ensure you can adapt easily and cost effectively when life changes occur. Aesthetically speaking, try not to fall for trends and build honestly and lightly. Some of the most awarded homes have a certain timeless grace in their simplicity. With our busy modern lifestyles and increasing time spent at home, we all deserve a place we can truly relax and feel like we belong. It doesn’t have to be an expensive interior design statement, what’s important is that our homes exude a sense of wellness and become an extension of ourselves. Creating a Big Life in a Small Space Words Leah Botherway

If you ask most people what they ultimately look for in life, the answer usually comes down to different variations of one little word: Freedom. Free to move about as they please, free from mortgage debt, free from clutter and free from the stress and anxiety that often comes with having a complicated life. For Shaye Boddington, all of these factors played a huge part in her decision to design and build a tiny home for her family in 2013. Ultimately, Shaye wanted to live an easier, more affordable and sustainable life. Essentially, she wanted to live a life where

she would be free and could concentrate on enjoying the simple things. After purchasing land with her partner at the time, Shaye went about drawing up the plans for Lucy, her first tiny home. She loved the design and build process so much that what started as a one-off project is now a busy and successful business. Shaye’s Tiny Homes in Henderson and Kaiwaka now has over 20 employees and is positively thriving. Selected for their talent and eye for detail, the team work together

to create a range of customisable designs to suit different lifestyles and tastes. Each home is designed using simple and clean lines using a biophilic ethos, which brings the outside world in whilst considering the overall impact on the environment. So, what makes Shaye’s Tiny Homes different to others? This all comes down to the design and aesthetics – every element of each home is considered and purposeful, all whilst being finished to the highest of qualities. Each home is designed to allow people to stand upright both upstairs and downstairs

Since 2013, Shaye and her team have been designing and building tiny houses for hundreds of happy clients. Each and every project the team embarks on is taken very personally, the team live and breathe perfecting each tiny house design. All the tiny homes are designed and built by our highly skilled team of qualified builders based in New Zealand.

comfortably, and storage is tucked away in the sneakiest, yet most convenient, of places. What Shaye loves about living in a tiny home is the lack of clutter and the fact that those items that she does choose to surround herself with are things that she loves – “everything in my home is something that brings me joy”. This also goes for the finishings that she has chosen. “To put it simply, due to the smaller square meterage, you don’t need as many materials as you would for a traditional home. Hence, you’re more likely to be able to justify the cost of that beautiful timber and luxurious carpet.” Whilst Shaye has her tiny home set up on a picturesque property that she loves, one of the most freeing elements of a tiny home is the ability to live anywhere. Built atop a trailer, it can be moved to wherever the wind takes you. Now, if that doesn’t encapsulate freedom, I don’t know what does. www.shayestinyhomes.co.nz www.facebook.com/Shayestinyhomes

The protection of assets that we have all worked so hard to acquire is an important consideration for most people. Trusts are invaluable asset protection mechanisms, which allow a person to hold property and assets on behalf of another for the good of the beneficiaries. However, not everyone needs a trust, so ensuring other forms of asset structuring including your will and enduring powers of attorney are up to date is important. One coat is allowed for, but we often apply a second and third coat for extended longevity in visual appearance,” he says. Their joinery is always double-glazed, and due to the universal colour and sizing, has just a three week turnaround. This is virtually a commercial box section suite (41 Series Architectural). “Our roofing is always Marine grade, our interiors a combination of pre polished Birch ply, plastered board, and/or hemlock T.G. & V ceilings.” These podz are not limited to use as a bach though. They have been used as sleepouts, music studios, hunting huts, retreats, offices, workers` cottages, airbnbs, and an autonomous space for returning offspring and their families. The design allows the podz to be either “stitched” together, or separated from each other in a parallel, set-back, or in staggered formation. It also invites provision for decks, courtyard and patios. And they can always be moved to another place with ease. www.bachpodz.com 022 194 7492

Bringing Your Home to You Words Leah Botherway

Looking to buy a property can be a full-time job. Most people spend hours refreshing their computer screen, followed by weekends spent traipsing around open homes along with other hopefuls only to find that the house sold for twice the amount of the rateable value. Because of these reasons, a lot more people have been looking into other ways of getting onto the property ladder, one of these being buying an existing home for relocation. Marsh from Repiles and Relocatables has been working in the industry his entire professional life and has never been busier. Marsh says that, in the past, most people haven’t considered a relocatable home as an option simply because “it seems a bit of a hassle”, however, this couldn’t be further from the truth.

With more large developments cropping up around the country, there has been an increase in relocatable homes on the market. These are older, character-filled houses often built from native weatherboard and hardwood and can be picked up for a lot cheaper than a new build. In saying that, there are many different factors to consider when it comes to costs, and that’s why the Repiles and Relocatables website has a handy calculator that allows you to figure out what sort of costs you are looking at. Simply by adding the price of the section together with the house price, it provides you with estimates for everything from the house removal and delivery through to connecting to the utilities. As for the downside and challenges involved in buying a relocatable property, there doesn’t appear to be many, and if there are, these are usually site-specific. With this in

mind, when selecting a site with the intention of relocating an existing home, you will need to thoroughly read any covenants registered against the title that may restrict this. Another factor, which may seem obvious, is access. Whilst fences can be moved and pillars manoeuvred around, if there is limited vehicle access to the property, it may make delivering an entire house difficult. As for the traditional view of it being a bit of a hassle, it really isn’t as Marsh and the guys at Repiles and Relocatables will do the hard work for you. From picking up the house, to taking it back to the yard for renovations through to delivering it to your new property, this leaves very little for you to do. Or, as Marsh puts it, “all you need to do is have the power turned off, and we take care of the rest”. www.repilesandrelocatables.co.nz/ www.facebook.com/Repilesrelocatablesltd

They Don’t Build ‘Em Like They Used To Words Leah Botherway

For some people, their dream home is a brand new, architecturally designed house with all the bells and whistles. They love the idea of a sleek and modern home, want to be the first person to prepare a meal in the kitchen and seek comfort in the fact that their memories are the first to be made under that roof. For Sheryl Moir, she wants the opposite and loves the character and quality that comes with older homes. She wants a house with its own history and story – a story that she can add to in the years to come. Sheryl has been relocating homes for over 11 years through Marsh and the team at Repiles and Relocatables. Currently living in her most recent purchase on her rural property in Mangawhai, she intends to add another relocatable home in the near future, which she will run as a Bed and Breakfast. When speaking to Sheryl about why she keeps going back to relocating and renovating homes, it all comes down to the

quality. It’s the age-old saying of ‘they don’t make ‘em like they used to’ – she loves the beautiful hardwood floors, the wooden joinery, and the high studs traditionally found in old bungalows and villas that you just don’t seem to get in new builds. Whilst there is sometimes a bit of work to be done to bring the house up to scratch, Sheryl says that Marsh and his team of tradies at Repiles and Relocatables are “absolutely amazing”. They complete all renovations at their yard in Kaiwaka, ensuring that the house is in the best condition before it arrives at your property. Sheryl is far from alone when it comes to relocating homes. With people realising that this is a highly cost-effective way to buy a home, Repiles and Relocatables are experiencing their busiest year yet and are fast becoming Northland’s top relocatable house company. www.repilesandrelocatables.co.nz www.facebook.com/Repilesrelocatablesltd

Time for an update? Change your shelves with the seasons by making use of your existing favourite objects and introducing fresh pieces to breath new life into your display. Think about balance, scale, colour and texture when selecting and placing your objects. Create vignettes that work on their own but also work cohesively together. Consider the scale, making sure that you have a variety of sizes and shapes. Books work well especially as risers for smaller objects. Choose a colour palette to help pull the look together. It doesn’t need to be too contrived or matching but selecting two or three shades and repeating them will help the colour story run throughout your display. Don’t underestimate the use of mixing textures either, balance smooth or flat items with plenty of texture to give depth and textural interest. Using plants and floral arrangements adds a natural element as well as creating a lush leafy look. Remember not to forget functionality, placing regularly used items on the lower shelves with more sculptural items housed on the higher less accessible shelves. www.homehaven.co.nz amanda@homehaven.co.nz

Breaking New Ground in Construction Methods In 2019, Mahurangi College established a Building Academy to provide opportunity and a vocational pathway for students who are considering FLOORINGXTRA.CO.NZ entering the trades as a career choice.

When students enter the program at Year 12, they are registered as an apprentice with BCITO, thus working towards a building qualification, while also gaining NCEA credits (the equivalent of two subjects). When students leave school, not only do they have credits towards their trade certificate but also NCEA qualifications.

Students need to be able to make mistakes and feel comfortable admitting when they don’t know how to do something. They need lots of opportunities to problem solve. This produces learning that sticks and, more importantly, it builds confidence, maturity and a great work ethic. Making learning relevant, is what engages students and makes them successful.” Quick-Step

and using it to solve everyday problems. One of the biggest issues with tiny home construction is the weight restriction in order to be road legal. To solve this issue students are building the house out of a high density PVC foam, sandwiched between layered fibreglass. The final product is used as the structure, insulation, inside and outside cladding - all in one 50mm panel. The result is a very strong, durable and very lightweight product, reducing house weight by 30-40%. This technology is widely used in the marine industry, including in America’s Cup boats, but it appears this is the first time a home has been built using this technology. The tiny home will include two mezzanine bedrooms, a living area, bathroom and a full kitchen. The College plans to run open days for the public to view progress throughout the year. The house will go to auction at the end of November, with all funds raised going directly back into the College. While impressive, Mr Vaughan has a clear mindset. “My focus is on growing great young adults that will know that they can add value to their place of work and to our society. For me, whatever they construct is a byproduct of that process.” www.mahurangi.school.nz/constructionacademy

Factors to Consider When Looking at Drainage for New Builds A free-flowing drainage system is an essential part of your build. The nature of being underground means if anything goes wrong it can be costly to correct, so it’s important to ensure good planning and design happen prior to installation. When it comes to ensuring you have a reliable drainage system for new builds, there are a few key factors to take into account: Lay of the land and the position of the house There are rules around the gradient of surface water and foul drainage systems. A minimum gradient needs to be achieved - otherwise it may not be possible to install a gravity system. In that case an alternative pumped setup may be necessary for foul waste. This works by regularly pumping

sewerage from its storage container to the public sewer. There are ongoing maintenance requirements and running costs associated with this. Size of house and final outfall point

The landscape surrounding the house, as well as the size of the house, influences the position of rainwater downpipes, cesspits and the size of the underground drainage system needed. Similarly, the number of showers, baths, basins and toilets will impact on the specification of foul drainage. Pipe positioning

The pipe’s position determines the material, depth, bed and surrounds. Surface water ideally falls away from a house to a suitably sized pipe, with rainwater dropping to

cesspits. This keeps the ground around the house as dry as possible. Alternative to the main sewerage system

If there’s no public sewer, you may be required to treat and dispose of your own waste. There are a number of systems designed specifically for this purpose – the location on site and the way waste is discharged is crucial in identifying the correct product for the job. Baby it's Cold Outside Sauna has been a way of life in Finland, where it was invented, for over 2000 years. One of the first written descriptions of the Finnish Sauna was in 1112, with a list of benefits including increased circulation, reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, assisting weight loss, flushing toxins from the body and relieving stress. Raku and Eemil, also originally from Finland and both with a background in construction, created Ulko Custom Saunas after building their own sauna and introducing friends to its benefits.“Our friends were impressed with both the sauna experience and the style of carpentry used in building saunas traditionally. We built our second sauna for

our friends and word of mouth has done the rest.” The name Ulko comes from the Finnish word for an outside sauna, which is the style of sauna they specialise in. Whether it is a high end sauna with a full log burning fire and finished in Western Red Cedar, or a low cost sauna built to a budget, they are fully flexible and can build to their client’s preferences and budget. Smart Solutions for Windows and Doors On average, windows and doors make up just 10% of the building envelope but they have a significant impact on a home's thermal performance so they're an important element to get right.

A thermally efficient house is designed to create a stable and comfortable environment, that's not only healthier but also cheaper to heat and cool, year-round. There are a few factors to consider when planning your windows and doors for maximum efficiency. Windows gain more heat in summer and lose more heat in winter than any other surface in the home so you'll want to consider how the sun moves over your home through the year so you can optimise the position of your windows and doors. Window systems are responsible for at least 40% of heat lost from your home so any improvement you make will have a big impact on the overall thermal. performance. Double glazing with an inert gas fill, such as argon or krypton, between the glass sheets helps to slow the flow of heat in and out of the house as the gas is a poor thermal conductor. This can be further improved by choosing a thermally efficient frame, such as

ThermalHEART or uPVC Klima Series. ThermalHEART technology takes the fight against winter cold a step further, with an additional thermal insulator stitched into the core of the aluminium window system. Keeping cool temperatures out in colder months and decreasing solar gain in warmer months assists in year-round warmth and comfort. ThermalHEART can aid in managing the risk of condensation forming, therefore reducing the risk of mould growth. All with a thermal performance up to 35% better than standard double glazed windows, and available in a full range of doors and windows. Glass plays an important role in the thermal performance of the whole window system. Low-emissivity (Low-E) glass has a transparent coating that reduces the amount of heat that passes through the glass while still letting light through. Low-E coatings can be tailored to maximise or minimise the sun's

energy coming in, making them a popular choice for improving the thermal performance of your home - no matter your home's climate or orientation. Composite Joinery are specialist aluminium joiners and manufacturers of the Vantage range of aluminium windows and doors. Their locally made windows and doors are found in more New Zealand homes than any other brand, and they are always refining and innovating solutions to meet changing needs. Offering a wide range of solutions for all homes - from entrance doors to windows, sliders, bi-folds and thermally efficient options. Omaha Bay Art: The Birds, the Sea and the Land “The duck totem animal symbolises energy, emotional strength, grace, clarity, living in the moment, family, protection, caring, nurturing - when I looked this up, it really resonated with me. The duck appeared in one of my paintings just as I was about to give up on it. Once I saw it, I knew I had to keep going.” Growing up in the tiny Northland town of Tinopai, Bonny Davis developed a love for native birds, the sea, and marine mammals very early in life. She also loved drawing, and remembers (at a very young age) spending days working on a single piece. The natural world still remains a constant source of artistic inspiration, which is right on the doorstep at her Omaha Beach home. “I often take photos and collect driftwood on my beach walks to work with later. It’s a nice quiet time where I can really think about the

42

ART

next painting or art piece.” Up until three years ago, Bonny worked primarily with ink, acrylic, oil and charcoal on canvas, but after working with a tutor at Auckland Studio Potters she discovered that she also had a passion for working with clay. Bonny has added bold, hand-built ceramic pieces to her portfolio, frequently working on these alongside her paintings. “I’ll often combine my work from canvas to clay - it’s been such a gift. I’m a little more abstract with my ceramic pieces and like to include the many stories and myths from my childhood.” A strong connection to her Maori culture shines through in Bonny’s work, along with the formal training and study that followed her school years where she was lucky to have some inspirational teachers. “My art teacher

Mr Worthington taught us how to think big and believe in ourselves. He would say ‘you can do this, and you will do this. Now get on with it!’” she laughs. “I still hear those words now as I’m working in my studio, and I still work big, big paintings and big sculptures.” Bonny works from her home studio and sells her pieces primarily through her website, omahabayart.co.nz. If you’re local, you can pick up your purchase directly (by prior arrangement) or Bonny is happy to drop it off to you. She continues to develop her already-beautiful portfolio in preparation for a gallery exhibition early next year, and is also accepting commissions. You can see more of her work online at www.omahabayart.co.nz. bonnydavisart@gmail.com 0274 598 411

Banana Haven Tropical plants have had a resurgence in design in recent years - their large and bold leaves create a lush atmosphere of exotic locations which Covid restrictions have kept us from. But Banana Trees, in particular Misi Luki or Samoan Lady Fingers are the ultimate plant, yielding very sweet fruit as well as a beautiful

green foliage, and can be grown locally. Geoff Ledbrook’s love of bananas started with the purchase of ten suckers from a plantation in Oratia, West Auckland nearly 30 years ago, and has grown to a sizable hobby of over 100 banana trees in his picturesque property in Omaha.

TIPS TO GROW YOUR BEST BANANAS Bananas enjoy a sheltered microclimate which can be created locally, says Geoff. He recommends avoiding frost and planting them from late September - May in a North facing position. Fertilise three to four times a year with compost, tree clippings, chicken manure or used hay. The banana trees are shallow rooted and love additional water in summer, they will typically stop growing at 12 degrees - their ideal temperature is 18 degrees to the high 20s. Harvest your bananas by cutting off the entire bunch once you see one or two bananas start to appear yellow in colour. The flower which hangs below the bunch

can be used in Thai or Vietnamese salads. Unknown to most people, banana trees only produce one bunch per tree, however they are self-fertile so suckers will start to grow by the time the mother plant is fully grown. Ideally you will have three plants growing: the mother (with fruit and flower), a daughter/teenager, and smaller daughter (the sucker). Once you have harvested the bananas cut the mother plant down and leave this to mulch the suckers. If any additional suckers grow, cut them off as they will take energy away from the fruiting plant. You can expect a sucker to take roughly 18 months to be fully grown.

Geoff and wife Bridget have created a liveoff-the-land haven planting many fruit trees of different varieties on their property alongside greenhouses and several banana and olive groves, selling their produce originally at the Matakana Village Farmers’ Market. Geoff recalls his son as a toddler running amongst their trees with a bucket to harvest guavas and other fruits, now in his early 20s he replicates this every visit home. Lockdown was the catalyst for their roadside stall at 81 Omaha Valley Road, where you can purchase their bananas and banana plants (in suitable seasons). 81 Omaha Valley Road, Omaha

Turning Milk into Cheese Cheese on the Green share their recipe for a favourite quick and easy cheese. Cream Cheese with Chives and Garlic You just need milk, cream, rennet, starter culture and a sea salt to make this popular fresh cheese. Cheese at the Green Classes are situated in Maungaturoto in the Kaipara District next to the fabulous Paparoa Golf Course. Originally named ‘Fromage at Franklin’ in Paparoa, however they moved last year with their small herd of dairy goats and went off-grid in a tinyish house to the wonderful rural farming community of Maungaturoto. From their custom built, self-contained ‘Cheese Room’ they regularly run classes ranging from Soft Cheeses through to Farmhouse Cheddar, Camembert and a wonderful Gelato/Sorbet class thrown into the mix.

INGREDIENTS 2 litres milk

1 litre of heavy cream

¼ teaspoon of mesophilic cheese starter

3 drops of rennet dissolved in 2 tablespoons filtered water ¾ teaspoon unrefined sea salt Fresh garlic 1 large clove Chopped chives

METHOD 1. P our milk and cream into a double boiler pot and heat slowly until temperature reaches 23℃ - takes about 15 minutes, remove from heat. 2. S prinkle starter over the milk, let it sit 5 minutes to rehydrate. Stir milk gently for about 30 seconds then add the diluted rennet and move through the milk. Cover the pot and leave to sit for 12 hours. The whey will separate from the curd. 3. L ine a sieve with muslin/chux cloth, pour curds and whey in and tie up corners of lining to form a bag. Using a wooden spoon handle hang over a bucket or jug to drain the whey for 8 hours. 4. T ransfer the strained cheese into a bowl, add the salt, fresh garlic and chopped herbs and mix through gently. Store in a glass jar in the fridge for up to 3 weeks.

“We use fresh cows’ milk and goats’ milk when my girls are milking later in the year,” says founder Jas Futter. “I’ve been taking classes since 2012 and I still love seeing the excitement on peoples faces when all of a sudden the milk starts becoming something more than just milk,” she says. “In my wildest dreams I never ever thought I’d be making cheese and teaching people to learn this wonderful artisan technique.” To check upcoming class dates, follow Cheese at the Green’s Facebook page. www.facebook.com/CheeseattheGreen

Mummacare – Providing Holistic Postnatal Care to New Parents Pregnancy, childbirth and parenting are huge life changes. The reality of the postnatal ‘fourth trimester’ can come as a shock to many parents. Some find their expectations shattered by feeling overwhelmed, exhausted and isolated. Healing from birth, learning to understand your baby, mastering skills like breastfeeding and settling baby all while sleep deprived can make for a challenging time. ‘Mummacare’ founders and registered nurses, Michelle Ryan and Cat Railey, met working as postnatal nurses at the Warkworth Birthing Centre in 2008. Michelle continues to work at the birthing centre as a Senior Nurse and Cat now works in a specialist regional team as a Maternal Mental Health Nurse. Their work provided them with a first-hand perspective of the growing needs for parents, especially families moving into the area and away from their support networks. Drawing on their specialist areas of practice they began offering a range of in home services

working alongside families as they transition to parenthood. “We could really see a need in the community from both specialist fields for new parents in the primary health sector. There is not much out there catering for those who might experience a wee wobble,” they tell us. Mummacare offers a range of services to parents who are navigating the early months of caring for a newborn. Their ‘Home Based and Hands-on’ sessions provide education and reassurance supporting parents to trust their instincts, nurture their confidence and understanding of babies. Visits are tailored to suit family needs troubleshooting, settling, sleep and feeding issues, as well as building on parent craft and establishing family rhythms. ‘Individual Therapy’ - Cat uses ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) and self compassion to support parents

The Energy Healing Studio The Sage Room Energy Healing Studio is a new addition to The Yoga Barn and Wellness Collective running from a beautiful tropical setting in Mangawhai Heads. Your journey to The Sage Room will lead you to a one hour healing session using predominantly Elohim Healing. This method of healing involves the channeling of energy in a sequential order - where healing hands are placed above different parts of the client's body. The healing energy raises the vibrations of the client and flows through to where it is needed in the body, promoting a feeling of increased wellbeing, an improvement in energy levels and greater inner calm.

cleared and your energy field is realigned. This form of healing is non-invasive and has the intention of bringing you into a state of balance and enhanced well being on all levels.

Universal Energy or Life Force (non religious) is directed by intention through the healer to the recipient. This energy (prana, qi, life force) promotes self-healing by relaxing the body and assisting the release of inner tensions. Energetic cords and attachments you no longer require, together with other varieties of energetic interference in your meridians, chakras and aura are also

The combination of modalities used in Elohim Healing realigns the energy systems in the body and helps to unlock any “out of balance” systems within. When out of balance we may get sick, have low energy levels, feel emotional or experience physical pain. This energy work can help get you back into sync, as well as help you to feel more grounded and balanced.

Founder, Cushla Leonard explains that clients are often relieved to know there is no expectation to disclose a lot of personal history before the healing session begins. The client can arrive and say very little if that is what is preferred.

“There are lessons to be learnt from every client and I continually add modalities to my skill set. At the moment I am involved in a series of wananga, focussing on the core emotions that sit behind energy blocks and how these can be released using RomiRomi Intuitive Bodywork and Mirimiri processes. I then hope to integrate this learning into my practice when required.” Whether you are a top athlete, a successful business person or someone that has a body or mind feeling a bit ‘off’, we all inherently want to perform on a healthy balanced platform as much as possible. To do this you need your energy to be balanced physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally - this is what helps create the flow we all seek.” 0210 840 6567 www.instagram.com/thesageroomenergy

Voyage Of The Daring Words Larry Paul

It’s February 1865 and Captain Samuel Phipps, his first journey as captain, is at the helm of the coastal schooner the Daring heading to Onehunga from Taranaki. On reaching the Manukau Harbour entrance in building sea and wind conditions the signal is up at the heads indicating it is unsafe to attempt a bar crossing. Phipps continues up the coast toward Kaipara Heads as the conditions deteriorate. Unable to head to windward and with an ever approaching lee shore his only option is to lay anchors and back the Daring ashore through the surf onto

Rangatira (Muriwai) Beach. This is not an uncommon strategy in the day to save life and vessel and the plan was to re-float her once conditions improved. A recovery attempt was made during the following week and involved deployment of 30 men including local iwi. Jacks, anchors, warps, makeshift rollers and buckets of ingenuity were involved resulting in the vessel being re-floated. Alas, a rising surf pushed her back on the beach where she was finally abandoned and ultimately buried under the black iron sands for the next 153 years.

May 2018, the beach is abuzz with local people reporting the discovery of a vessel emerging from the sands as the encroaching sea exposes more and more of her timbers. The reveal of her registration beam confirms it to be the Daring and a small Daring Rescue team comprising Baden Pascoe, Alan Sefton, Larry Paul and primary funder, John Street was established to recover her from the beach and look for the appropriate place for her to be conserved and ultimately displayed. The Daring was built by Donald McInnes in 1863 on the shores of the Mangawhai

Harbour and a more appropriate location could not be suitable for the Daring’s future. The community in Mangawhai led by Jim Wintle quickly identified the importance of the Daring at a local and global level and rallied together to ensure she was returned to her home. On Tuesday 4 May 2021, the Daring arrived pre-dawn to a temporary site beside the Mangawhai Museum. She was greeted by the sound of lone piper Barry Wallace representing the Nova Scotian ancestry of the boat builder and a karakia by local Kaumatua Richard Te Haara representing Ngati Whātua Te Uri O Hau. Preservation of the Daring and reassembly of her timbers to an “as found on the beach” state will be carried out over the coming months while a purpose built, Daring Discovery Centre, is designed and built to house her and the artefacts found in her bilges and to tell the stories of her people and journeys. Donations to assist the Daring on her journey can be made via their website. www.classicyachtcharitabletrust.org.nz

Better Than Your Standard Weed Whoever named seaweed did them a great disservice by putting weed in their name. They’re not typically a nuisance, like landbased weeds and they’re not even plants to begin with! Words Georgia Third

Ecologically, seaweeds are a critical part of reef ecosystems, both as a habitat and a food source. Humans too are increasingly incorporating seaweed into their diets, and for good reasons. They are a great source of iodine which is one of the most depleted nutrients in modern diets. Seaweed is also packed full of taurine, which helps control cholesterol, Omega 3, Zinc, Vitamin A, C and B12 which other than in seaweed, is only found in meat and fish (great for vegans and vegetarians). ‘Nori’ or ‘Porphyra’ is the delicious seaweed casing that surrounds sushi. Growing nori is difficult, relying on complex aquaculture systems to nurture it through two distinct life stages. After roughly five months developing the juvenile nori in temperature and light controlled tanks, it’s transferred into the ocean where it rapidly grows to harvest stage. As you may have noticed when munching on your favourite sushi roll, nori is very thin, only one or two cells thick. This means harvesting can happen within five to ten days and easily regrows for a further couple of harvests. Another popular seaweed delicacy comes

from ‘Undaria’ or ‘wakame’, known at your local sushi shop as seaweed salad. This is one of the few seaweeds that does deserve to be called a weed though and is nicknamed the gorse of the sea. Fast growing and invasive, it smothers aquaculture equipment and anything else it can attach to. Despite its weedy nature, it’s delicious to eat and New Zealand is developing ways it can utilise the seaweed found in our seas. Over the coming years we can expect to see a shift from an entirely imported market to more locally produced algae products. Seaweed has many other less obvious uses too. It contains gelatinous substances that are used as thickeners or gelling agents for ice cream, soups and beer. Their moisturising, anti-aging and antiinflammatory properties make them commonplace use in beauty products like facemasks, lotions, hair products and even toothpaste. In the medical field they are discovering cancer treating abilities and preventing HPV transmission. It’s even in dental moulds and fire extinguishing foam! Beyond the benefits and uses to individuals, seaweed is fighting for our

collective future. Researchers such as Mathieu Mongin in Australia have shown that seaweed may help protect against ocean acidification and the impacts of climate change on reefs in certain areas. Seaweed, you’d agree, deserves to be highly thought of. Georgia Third is currently studying for her Masters of Science, in Marine Science at The University of Auckland. georgia.third@niwa.co.nz

It’s a Dog’s Life Country Retreat Animal Sanctuary Words Dan Auber

Seven years ago, Helen and Gavin Cook quit their jobs as a teacher and HR manager to take over the Country Retreat for cats and dogs on Cowan Bay Road. The aim was

always to build up the business so that they could fund an animal sanctuary and that dream finally came true in 2019.

“We rescue animals, mainly puppies and

pregnant dogs, as these are often the most time and money consuming” says Helen.

“Often the pounds are unable to help them as they do not have the resources to do so. The

pregnant dogs and pups need 24/7 care and often we are feeding pups every two hours

day and night. When the pregnant dogs show signs of going into labour, they get constant care, we even sleep next to them so if they

get into any stress or trouble, we are on hand to comfort and help them.”

60

CHERISH

The aim is to get the animals healthy and rehome them. They have rehomed over 150 dogs so far and it looks like that number will be doubled this year. Helen, Gavin, and their team of volunteers teach the dogs to be social, not to be food aggressive and put initial steps in place to stop puppies biting. All this hard work is designed to set them up to succeed in their new lives with their new families. They have also rescued many other animals including cats, lambs, sheep, goats, pigs, and ducks. In normal times their kennel and cattery business provides the funds to support the sanctuary, but when Covid hit last year they were forced to close that business and rely on savings and donations: “Taking care of all these animals during lock down hit us hard financially and we are only now building up our business. We cannot personally support

the sanctuary like we did and now rely on donations.” “The last two weeks of April have been horrific because we have had to turn away puppies and pregnant dogs as we just don’t have the room. One of our rescue pregnant mums was just a puppy herself, giving birth to nine puppies, but in the process needed emergency surgery. Unfortunately four of her puppies died, probably due to her being so young as she was only ten months herself.” If you want to donate you can do so on their give a little page: www.givealittle.co.nz/ cause/country-retreat-animal-shelter-needshelp-creating, or directly to the Sanctuary account 12-3059-0382422-06. www.facebook.com/Country-Retreat-AnimalSanctuary-101064491484814 09 425 8676

Roving Rurally The Roving Rural Market (RRM) provides a genuine farmgate to table experience from artisan growers and producers in Ruakaka and Waipu. “Roving” in nature, this exciting new market will be set at a different idyllic rural destination each time as each stall-holder has a turn hosting.

The market stays in touch with customers by posting on their Facebook page the location and products that will be available. Chances are you will see links to it on the local community and ‘Buy and Sell’ pages. Differentiating themselves from other markets, the RRM is typically held in afternoons and perhaps evenings in summer, usually has live music for ambience and offers ready to eat delicacies to enjoy at the market while you are shopping for staples and gifts. The markets are not held on a regular basis but are worked in around other events to provide a market experience when there isn’t another one going in Waipu. They are also themed: for instance Valentine’s Day, Easter and Mother’s Day markets have been held and the next one is planned for 15 July, Winter in Waipu. Some of the vendors are seasonal, but remain a part of the organising in their off seasons. The current vendors list includes: Left Fields - A No-Spray Market Garden conscientiously grown produce and flowers with a focus on soil health and sustainable practices; The Chocolate Barn - handcrafted boutique chocolates using the finest ingredients made in Waipu; Logan MacLean’s award-winning vegan pies, Black Pudding that won an award for the best New Zealand vegan breakfast sausage; High Brook Hills - soap and body products from the land of goat’s milk and honey, organic herbs and healing

flowers; Bleu Bespoke - rustic dried floral creations, gifts and cards; Belle Chevre Creamery with their paddock to plate, ethically produced goats milk cheese products based in Waipu; Ogopogo Gardens, quality produce grown with care specialising in berry fruit - always spray-free and always picked ripe. Dirty Hippie, personally made, personal care products with ethical packaging; Epic Coffee NZ, Waipu based specialty coffee roaster offering drip coffee bags for your every adventure, and Pinenut Bakery’s artisan sourdough breads and baguettes made exclusively from organic flours and a bit of true love. Another novel concept is VIP hour. The first hour is reserved exclusively as 'VIP Hour'. $5 per person via pre registration. 'VIP Hour' offers a limited number of shoppers 'first selection across the range of bountiful stalls without the pressure of a large market crowd. It is ideal for shoppers that would like to 'get in early' and best parking before brisk trading begins. Each entry to the VIP Hour goes in the draw to win an Artisan Hamper - a collation of our favourite products from the Rural Roving Market artisans. Follow them on Facebook or stay in touch with them by email. www.facebook.com/Roving-Rural-MarketWaipu rovingruralmarket@gmail.com
