LIFE’S A PICNIC For the past three years Village Picnic has been based out of owner Philippa’s house in Matakana. So when an opportunity recently arose to take on the ‘Local Food Kitchen’ in the heart of the village, Philippa jumped at the chance to provide a pick-up destination for her picnic customers and to showcase some of the best artisan producers of the region. Village Picnic’s new shop offers hampers, platters, stylish picnic set ups and is also the starting point for Philippa’s increasingly popular Mystery Picnic experience. This includes a day trip scavenger hunt solving clues and puzzles, while collecting local artisan products along the way, ending up at a final picnic destination. A great gift idea. To find out more or should you wish to order a picnic platter or hamper to collect as you are passing through, head to the website. 989c Matakana Road, Matakana | www.villagepicnic.co.nz

KEBABS ARE A WINNER

ACUPUNCTURE AT OCEAN VIEW THERAPIES

With a love for the Mangawhai locals and over a decade of experience in the industry, Matthew has brought the tastiest kebabs to town.

With over 25 years experience in deep tissue massage and beauty therapy at Ocean View Therapies, Becky has now also graduated as an acupuncturist. Acupuncture has been part of Traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years. Used for pain relief, with a wide range of concerns including emotional imbalances, digestive disorders, infertility, stress and insomnia.

Matthew has worked hard over the last few months to follow his dream of owning his very own family-run kebab kitchen, adding to the culinary diversity in magical Mangawhai. Launching in mid-May, Kebabs 2 Go has been busier than this small business owner could have ever imagined. He is incredibly grateful for the support and warm welcome that the local community has provided.

Acupuncture uses tiny needles and can be a deeply relaxing therapy, helping to maintain balance and harmony in the body so it can heal itself.

Supplying the town with delicious rice dishes, meat on chips and classic kebabs, you must try one for yourself - your taste buds won’t be disappointed.

SPRINKLING KINDNESS With a vision to finance projects that benefit the local community significantly, the Mangawhai Opportunity Factory is an extraordinary store that is 100% dedicated to enhancing the breathtaking town of Mangawhai and surrounding areas. Adding to the healthy, bustling atmosphere of the place, it's about human beings helping other human beings. Words Shannen Frear

The Mangawhai Opportunity Factory was founded by a group of local angels who were eager to see the money received at the op shop go back into the area's own charities, businesses, clubs, and people. The store tells a great story derived from the values of kindness, care, team, generosity and unity. This op shop isn't like any other. It is unique for its mission of giving back locally and also for its generous and loveable team of approximately forty-five volunteers who are

all committed to making the community a better place while having lots of fun. The Mangawhai Opportunity Factory goes beyond a shop; it is a friendly little place where you can just pop in and say hello, spread the love and share some laughs. The manager, Honor Stratton, has lived in Mangawhai for twelve years. With a background in yoga and health and a passion for volunteering and fundraising, she says, "the thing that I love about my life

is helping other people, and this position at Mangawhai Opportunity Factory just brought everything together". What Honor likes most about Mangawhai is the feeling of community and the dreamy estuary. She says, "I love that the kids can go to school with no shoes on and roam free around town", confirming the laid-back and relaxed feel that this special village encapsulates. The Mangawhai Opportunity Factory has just recently given out over $53,000 to

nineteen different organisations in the area. The Mangawhai Surf Lifesaving Club, Community Garden, and Beach School, have all benefited from these funds, making the Factory one of the most generous contributors in the community. But Honor mentioned that she and the hardworking team wouldn't be able to do what they do without the support of local people. "We are fortunate to have both the locals and the holidaymakers who have baches in the area, and we are incredibly grateful for this blend of opportunity,” she says. “We feel this is what drives the business. Mangawhai is paradise, not just because of where we are, but because of who is here." Relying on the goodness of local people, any donations to the Factory are more than welcome, and everything that wanders into the shop will find a sweet new home. CURIOSITY KILLED THE KATE Growing up in the sleepy seaside town of Leigh, Kate Evans had no clue what she wanted to do when she left her local high school Mahurangi College. One thing she did know, however, was that the constant questioning of “what did she want to do when she grew up” by well-meaning adults around her, caused vast amounts of exasperation. But it also became the catalyst for an incredible career as a freelance journalist and nature writer that shows no sign of abating anytime soon. Words Kate Moore

The catalyst was a piece of writing that Kate produced for the local school magazine about the frustration school-age young adults feel about ‘that’ question. The article generated a lot of positive feedback from her peers and faculty alike, and Kate was left thinking, “well, if I can’t think of anything else to do, I guess I could write.” This thought, combined with a remark from one of her friends, a play on a well-known quote scribbled in her yearbook of “Curiosity killed the Kate.” Because Kate didn’t have any other ideas, she thought, “why not.” And she combined her gifts of an inquisitive nature and the ability to turn complicated, fascinating topics into a piece of writing that people could understand and enjoy reading. After busting her gut at the University of

Sydney for over four years, she completed a degree in Media Communications. She was able to fill her timetable to the brim with other “nerdy” subjects that she found fascinating and wanted to dip her toes into, fuelling her aforementioned inquisitive nature. She also complemented her studies by taking gap years and furthering her education abroad with internships in Cambodia and Argentina. Writing about complex subjects and being able to turn the information into something that people can read and enjoy is a gift that Kate doesn’t take for granted. “It is a great privilege of my job, and I am so lucky that I get to think of any question I like, follow my curiosity, find the person who knows all about it and pick their brains.” One of these curiosities led her back to the shores

of Leigh as she wrote an award-winning piece questioning the fishing quota system in New Zealand. Kate looked into marine life and survival of both finned and crustaceous delicacies. The article also argues that the quota system is flawed and needs reworking to take care of the smaller fisher people and not just the large companies that dominate the shoreline. Kate says that she is incredibly proud of the piece as it was challenging, but it enabled her to reconnect with people she attended primary school with. Her writing isn’t bound to the shores of New Zealand, as some highly esteemed publications have published Kate, such as the Washington Post, National Geographic, The Guardian, the Observer, Discover Magazine, Hakai Magazine, Undark, EOS and

the Scientific America. Some of those articles have won awards, with the latest being the Webster Magazine for Best Journalist at the New Zealand Magazine Awards 2022. She has also filmed in many parts of the world, although she is quick to admit that writing is her passion over other types of media. Currently, Kate is working within the local shorelines once more as she and esteemed photographer Richard Robinson from Snells Beach are working on a project called ‘A Voice for Tangaroa.' This a New Zealand Geographic series telling the stories of our moana which is funded through NZ on Air for the next year. Even though Kate has been published many times worldwide, she still gets a thrill when she hears the publication that she writes for most frequently, the New Zealand Geographic, thud into her mailbox. The thrill is intensified as one of her daughters can recognise her name and pick out all her bylines. If you feel like diving into the world of synaesthesia or learning about giant swamp kauri or the discovery of a 3-foot parrot called Hercules, check out Kate’s website and prepare to be fascinated. www.kateevans.org www.facebook.com/FeijoaFellowship

PERMANENT HOLIDAY Just over a year ago, the mature Queen Palms that stand over this property as sentinels witnessed the renovation firsthand. As the property was stripped past its bones to the floor like a black battened phoenix, it rose from the ashes in gabled beauty. Words Kate Moore | Photos Robinson Studios

Dean and Tracey Butchers have been a part of the vibrant Omaha community for many moons. They flittered back and forth from their primary residence in St Heliers to their coastal property along Omaha Beach. The ocean's siren call for fishing (Dean) and the fabulous golf courses in the area (Tracey) stole their hearts, and they decided to holiday there permanently. So five years ago, they set their sights on purchasing a lifestyle property. What they ended up with is a 12acre block of land with mobile lawnmowers (sheep and cows), plenty of "phenomenal soil" that houses a very "productive vegetable garden", and a modest 140 square metre house that was constructed in the 1900s. After an eight-month renovation, what resides there now is a magnificent 290 square metre house, plus 140 square metres worth of decks. Local building company Foresight Builders completed the renovation. However, the process began earlier for the Butchers, who started working with (now retired) architect Bill Harris on the design. Dean says that "The attention to detail that everyone brought to the table has made the property the beauty it is today." Bill was selected for the job as Dean and Tracey had seen the thoughtful and tasteful homes he had been a part of and provided excellent "insights into the flow, sizes and proportions of the rooms." Zach Forsyth, the owner of Forsight Builders, was a constant professional in Dean's eyes. Both Zach and talented main foreman Sam Currey offered details that enhanced the property. One of these details was incorporating cedar on the exterior of the entranceway to contrast with the noir exterior. The result is stunning and provides

Dean's favourite space of the property is a tie between the magnificent open-plan kitchen and dining room, as it is the "hub of the home." It features 3.5 metre high ceilings and a galley kitchen with a spectacular 4m long bench complete with waterfall edges. The lighting is extremely well thought out, and a feature of this room is the Tom Dixon "Moltan" light that hangs above the breakfast bar area. Dean's other favourite space is the newly constructed media room. The cosy space boasts inbuilt BOSE speakers and allows total control over the music that flows throughout the house and outdoors onto the magnificent back deck that houses both an outdoor dining space and an impressive outdoor fireplace built of schist, (a medium-

MASTER CRAFTSMAN Ed Guinness has always had a way with wood. Even during his many years working in hospitality, including more than two decades running the famous Leigh Sawmill Café, he was always knocking up pieces of furniture and sets of drawers with whatever materials he could lay his hands on, much of it sourced from the abundant supplies around the former sawmill. Words Cliff Taylor

Ed made his first full-sized table more than a dozen years ago, built from repurposed timber salvaged from an old tank stand. That original rustic and superbly functional table still stands, as solid as ever, in his home near Matakana. Hundreds, if not thousands, of people have sat around it, sharing countless dinner parties and celebrations over the years. “A good dining room or kitchen table is at the centre of every home,” says Ed. “It’s where friends and family gather for all the important stuff in life.”

20

HOUSE & GARDEN

Working with wood products has been part of his life for so long that becoming a furniture maker seemed like a natural progression. After buying the historic Leigh sawmill in 1994, the Guinness family continued to process timber at the site for a couple of years before converting the mill into a restaurant and music venue. Surrounded by the tools of the trade, Ed and brother Ben continued to build all manner of novel pieces of furniture, shelving and artworks while preserving the unique heritage of the mill. Ed has refined his technique and now

produces exquisitely crafted, polished and oiled tables and other items from his workshop at the sawmill. Using sustainably harvested tree resins, waxes and plant oils, predominantly from the Naturalhouseco - he combines mostly native timbers and works the surfaces to bring out their lustrous sheen. Examples of his creations, including a fullsized bedstead, can be viewed in the shop, Merchants of Leigh, which he runs with Matt Crockett, and on Instagram and Facebook. Being largely self-taught, Ed is reluctant to describe himself as a “master craftsman,”

preferring to pay his respects to the older skilled carpenters and joiners he has learned from over the years. “They are the real master craftsmen,” he says. “I’m still learning.” But the beautiful items he produces speak for themselves. Ed also makes chopping boards, benches and other types of furniture and is available for commissions. Merchants of Leigh - 142 Pakiri Road, Leigh guinness.edward@gmail.com

HOME AWAY FROM HOME Having spent a lot of time hanging out with grandparents who lived in the area, the owners of this modern 'bach' were already very familiar with Snells Beach well before they purchased a prime-located, cleared section two years ago. Words John Williams Photos Jamie Cobel

However, it wasn't until they were on holiday on nearby Waiheke that they spotted a design that they thought would be perfect for their site – something with a laid-back feel whilst being minimalist and modern, says one of them. Excited by the discovery, they took note of the architect’s board outside the house and immediately called him on their return to the mainland. The brief to ‘CoolHouse’ architect Darren Jessop was for a stylish, practical, modern beach house that would deliver privacy from neighbours, views of the sea, and an alternative home for both to work from when needed. The site has a wide street frontage that narrows and elevates towards the rear. It is also surrounded on three sides by other homes; therefore, the house's size, shape, and position on the site were

crucial to delivering a satisfactory outcome, says Jessop.

“Most of the other homes on the street have balconies facing the sea, which is obvious and understandable – but they face east, which is not the most practical place to

have an outdoor living space,” explains the

architect. “To resolve this issue, we designed an L-shaped pavilion, with the living part of

the L facing the beach. We also elevated the

front of the site two metres, which gives much better views of the beach – and privacy from the road and passers-by.”

The resulting ‘living’ pavilion has a large,

full-length deck on its beach frontage, with

full-height glass sliding doors on both sides that allow the view to carry through the

interior to the private courtyard at the rear of the property.

HOUSE & GARDEN

“The ‘sleeping’ pavilion contains three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and the home office. It also creates the second side of a courtyard and screens off the neighbours,” says Jessop. “The third side of the courtyard was formed by adding a large fireplace 'box' at the rear of the section, which effectively shields the courtyard from an adjacent twostorey home. It’s a perfect solution that gives sea views, shelter and privacy.” Inside, the home's décor is styled with a contemporary minimalist look. The owners specifically asked for a good kitchen, so an Archlinea design from Matisse was specified, matched with super-stylish Italian furniture from the same supplier. “For the exteriors, we chose hardy and low maintenance materials – ideal for a maritime environment,” says Jessop. “A complete set of aluminium shutters were also added, which

allows the entire home to be safely and securely closed up when the clients are down in Auckland but can be quickly and easily opened up when they arrive.” Luckily, the owners also understood the value of having good landscaping, says Jessop. “An in-situ concrete wall at the front of the property anchors the whole house nicely. There is also provision for a raised lap pool to be installed along the entire length of the front of the house – ideal for this particular location, as the tide takes the sea well out, so the beach is not always the best place to take a dip.” When asked about the result, the owners replied that they were 'over the moon.’ “The house has far exceeded our expectations, and it is a joy to share with our friends. It’s cosy in winter, cool in summer and peaceful all year round. It is wonderfully welcoming, and somewhere we feel relaxed as soon as we walk in the door.” www.jessoparchitects.co.nz www.theconstructionco.co.nz

SEASONAL GARDENING CALENDAR June brings change with the winter solstice on June 21. It may take a while to see the results, but once again, the daylight hours are increasing just a little bit each day. We are still a while off the coldest day of the year, though, which is usually in July. Isn’t the natural world amazing! Words Geoff Ledbrook

LEAFY GREENS

GROWING IN CONTAINERS

Leafy greens are a powerhouse of nutrition. These easy-to-grow vegetables are so well suited to a home garden where they can be picked fresh just when they are needed. This is when they are most nutritious as well. A few plants of silverbeet, spinach, kale, rocket, winter varieties of lettuce and mesclun mixes can keep your table stocked with the extra goodness you need.

A great option for the winter months is to plant in containers. Make use of the warmest spaces you have on your site to keep your garden producing. A sunny deck will work, or if you have a small greenhouse, all the better. Try planting vegetables like mesclun salad, lettuce, perpetual spinach, spinach and spring onions. Herbs like basil or coriander will thrive in a container too! These plants will reward you with fresh, easy-to-pick leaves just when you want them. In our climate, basil can grow over winter. Coriander will thrive in the cooler months too!

Leafy greens will grow well in sunny raised beds outside, in containers and greenhouses. They are quick to reach maturity and most can be picked multiple times. Keep up a regular planting schedule, so you always have some on hand. The health benefits of leafy greens are diverse and many. They are low in calories, high in fibre and a good source of vitamins and minerals. Studies suggest they are good for gut health and have anti-inflammatory properties. They are also considered to be good at detoxifying your body due to their chlorophyll content and support your liver to help in its creation of glutathione. What a great tool to stay healthy with during the winter months.

Suitable containers can be large terracotta or plastic pots, grow bags, wooden planter boxes, or even polystyrene boxes that you can often source from your local supermarket. These are low-cost and can be reused many times. You can use pretty much anything that will hold potting mix and give adequate drainage, even old baths, wooden wheelbarrows, wine barrels and recycled woven polypropylene sacks with their tops rolled down. Some containers are classier than others, but they will all do the job. The mix you put in your containers is

important. An easy option is to buy a good quality potting or container mix. This will have a slow-release fertiliser and sometimes granules that store water. It will provide the correct structure for successful container growing and will be largely weed seed free. You can also make your own container mix using ingredients like compost, peat, sand and pumice. The important thing is for your mix to provide a good structure that will drain well and not compact too much. I reuse potting mixes several times and this works fine. It is easy to add fertility back in with liquid feeds, some fresh compost, or a slow-release fertiliser.

PACIFIC COAST BEVERAGES The owner of Pacific Coast Beverages, Adam Booth, has had a long-term hankering to get into the hospitality business. Still, it wasn’t until he developed a property in Mangawhai that he considered turning the dream into reality. ‘I’m involved with a local restaurant and enjoy that, but I wanted to take the idea a step further,’ says Adam. Words Luke Williamson

36

SAVOUR

Adam freely admits the project has been very ‘organic’ in its development. "I thought it would be good to put in a vineyard and then decided we needed a winery to sell the wine. Then I met Sam Williamson and thought, maybe we should do a brewery. Then it’s not a big leap to put in a distillery as well," he laughs. And with all those beverages available, there has to be food! With so many ideas brewing, a structure was needed to house all the elements. Sales and Marketing Manager, Amber Hatton, explains the first job is to build the brewery and distillery ‘box’, and, once that is up and running, they’re aiming to have their first packaged beer available for sale by October 2022.

Two more ‘boxes’ will follow the establishment of the brewery, one containing a bar and snack/tapas area and the other a more formal restaurant. "It will be great for birthdays, weddings and sit-down occasions," says Adam. Amber adds, "We have a wide range of clientele here – people who are walking in off the beach, tradies after work, but also the Tara Iti crowd. We really want to tap into all those markets and make everyone happy." When complete, the first view, as you drive in, will be the big copper still behind glass panels. In the bar and restaurant, there will be glass that looks back into the brewery because Adam wants people to feel involved in the process.

impressed and tell their mates." It will also be an opportunity for Sam to get back to his passion for distilling spirits. "I experiment with my home still and my wife’s friends come over to try out the new batches of gin." Amber tells me his gin parties have quite a reputation in Matakana. She adds, "He’s getting a custom-made American still and brewery so we’re expecting the best of the best!" Sam is excited about being able to start with a blank canvas. "It’s a great opportunity and I’m hoping to make some awesome beer and spirits." He’s been doing his research and has

a head full of ideas. "I’ve got a lager recipe that’s unlike anything I’ve ever made before, so that’s exciting." Sam begins waxing lyrical about how he’ll construct his pale ale and whether to make it hazy or not, and we all agree it’s making us thirsty. So, when can we pull up to the beautiful location and get someone to pull us a pint? "A rough estimate for opening to the public is 18 months from now, towards the end of 2023," says Amber. "If we can make it any sooner, we will." www.facebook.com/PacificCoastDrinks www.pacificcoastbeverages.co.nz

The site faces north-west, so it enjoys the all-day sun and beautiful sunsets and has peeks of the harbour. "Everyone will be here for the sunset," says Amber. Adam tells me, "There’s also harbour access so people will be able to walk to the water through the vineyard and take a picnic. We might develop it further down there. A little Tiki bar maybe?" he laughs. The beer and spirits production is the responsibility of Sam Williamson, a man with 20 years of experience in breweries and a list of new recipes he can’t wait to get started on. "I’m trying to focus on maximising the flavours I get without hitting huge alcohol levels. I want people to be able to try a couple of pints, be

MAKE IT A DATE WITH OCTOBER 30 WINES Tucked away in the foothills of Matakana is a beautiful 40-hectare farm that incorporates the October 30 vineyard. Karen and Alistair Noakes manage the farm, house and vineyard, and the property is part of the farm originally owned by Alistair’s parents – he’s come full circle. Words Luke Williamson

"Half the property is covenanted bush and we run cattle on the rest, apart from the vineyard, which is three hectares," explains Alistair. October 30 has been a BioGro Certified Organic vineyard since 2011, the northernmost certified vineyard in New Zealand. "We just had a crazy idea one day and decided we’d go organic," laughs Alistair, "but I wouldn’t have it any other way." Alistair doesn’t use any weed spray and relies on a mower and sheep grazing to keep the pests under control. "The sheep do all the leaf plucking for us and leave the grapes alone, so they’re great – they mow and fertilise at the same time!"

Alistair and Karen have planted 10,500 vines incorporating syrah, chardonnay and gruner veltliner. Gruner veltliner is an Austrian variety and is a nod to October 30’s owner, Christian Baha, who was born in Vienna. "It’s Christian’s favourite wine...aromatic, good acidity, and reminiscent of sauvignon blanc and riesling." For the 2022 vintage, Alistair is producing a méthode traditionelle, using the gruner veltliner, something they have done before with great success. "We also have the two solid varieties, syrah and chardonnay, to back it all up – I planted those because I like drinking them," he laughs. "We’re also making a rosé this year using the syrah grapes and

it’s looking really good." Christian Baha, also owns the Kunsthaus in Vienna, which was designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser and hosts the world’s largest Hundertwasser museum. Christian has the world’s largest private collection of Hundertwasser works, so it is no surprise to see Hundertwasser’s artwork on the October 30 wine label. Alistair says, "It gives us a link to the new museum in Whangarei and we have a contract to supply them with our wine, so it’s a great opportunity for us." Karen tells me, "We maintain all aspects of the property, and we do all the sales and

Every year in June, a particular cluster of stars rises to the northeast and is visible just above the horizon at dawn; it signals the beginning of Matariki or the Māori New Year. Iwi around New Zealand celebrate Matariki at different times. It depends on when the cluster becomes visible to them; for some, the festivities begin on the first full moon after the star cluster rises; for some, on the next new moon. Some iwi can also see nine stars with the naked eye, not seven; neither is incorrect; it simply depends on the viewer’s location. Matariki is the Māori name for a large cluster of stars known in European history as the Pleiades (its ancient Greek name) or the Seven Sisters. Matariki means ‘tiny eyes’ or ‘eyes of God.’ There are many legends surrounding the star cluster of Matariki; here are the two most popular. Some iwi believe that the earth mother, Papatuanuku, and the sky father, Ranginui, were divided over whether to separate to provide light and life to the earth. During the debate, Tane Mahuta, the forest god, took matters into his own hands. He lay on his back and, using his feet, he forced them apart. His brother Tawhirimatea, the god of the winds, disagreed with his brother’s actions and was so angry that he tore his eyes out and threw them into the heavens. Another popular legend is that the star Matariki is the mother; she is the star that signifies reflection and hope. She also connects us to the environment and gathers people, so her six daughters surround her. Waitī; is associated with fresh water and the food sources that live in these water bodies. Waitā is our link with the ocean and the food sources within it. Waipuna-ā-range is associated with rain. Tupuānuku is the star associated with everything that grows within the soil to be harvested or gathered for food. Tupuārangi is associated with everything that grows up in the trees, including fruit, berries, and birds. Ururangi is the star associated with the winds. Pōhutukawa is the star associated with those that have passed

on. Hiwa-i-te-Rangi is the star that grants our wishes and helps us realise our aspirations for the coming year. Every year Matariki and her daughters journey across the night sky to visit their grandmother to help her prepare for the year ahead using their unique qualities and gifts. While they are together, the sisters are also learn new skills and gain new knowledge from her, which they, in turn, can pass on to others. On Friday 24 June, New Zealand will have its first public holiday to celebrate Matariki. This date has been chosen as it offers the best possible viewing of the cluster. It is a time to gather with loved ones and remember the year, celebrate the present, and set goals for the year ahead. It also provides a time

for reflection and remembrance of those who have passed away. Matariki is about spending time with family and connecting with loved ones, so gather and eat, drink, play games, tell stories together, learn about those around you, and bask in shared knowledge. Bundle up and go outside and see if you can spot Matariki in the sky shining down on us. This article would not have been written without the knowledge and guidance of Cherie Williams of Ngati Manuhiri and Ngati Wai. “He Tangata. He Tangata. He tanga. A beautiful high-quality collection (and storytelling) is shared with customers, who are often overwhelmed with emotion and the deep feeling of aroha and wairua they experience at Unity. “It is exciting to think of events, especially after the past few years of navigating Covid,” says Tania Rupapera, (Ngāti Kahu, Ngāruahine) founder of Unity Collection. “FUN is the word of the season and that is how we intend to celebrate Matariki by having fun.” Locals will be able to attend a Poi wananga hosted by a young māmā and entrepreneur, Te-Rina Gregory-Hawke, (Ngāti Whatua, Tainui, Ngāpuhi, Ngai Te Rangi), founder of Poi Yeah! Participants will receive a DIY Poi Kit, make the Poi and learn some Poi movements. It is a fun, mana-enhancing learning environment. Artist and designer Shona Tawhiao’s (Ngai Te Rangi, Whakatōhea, Te Whanāu a Āpanui) career spans three decades. A traditionally trained Māori raranga weaver, she creates couture outfits from Harakeke. Her collections

Ra Gossage’s (Ngāti Wai, Ngāti Ruanui) new design for Unity’s kākahu collection will be released for Matariki. A self-taught painter, her designs reflect her heritage, culture and environment. She is renowned for her contemporary kowhaiwhai panels, she creates from her home studio in Pakiri. Unity’s team member, Cherie Williams (Ngāti Manuhiri, Ngāti Wai), will share her aroha through teaching locals to weave a Putiputi (flower) at Unity Collection. Locals and visitors have relished this treasured experience with Cherie. In collaboration with Ngati Manuhiri, Rodney Local Board and the Matakana Cinema, Unity Collection will host the Matakana Coast release of the film, WHINA. STRESS AND YOUR BABY It would be fair to say that many people have had a variety of reasons to experience some stress over the past couple of years. While we have all had a different experience of what has played out, I don’t think many have escaped without some type of stressful situation, be it minor or significant. Photo Ses and Jen

This is true for adults, children and babies alike. For parents navigating a world of challenges, how can stress impact young children or even their growing baby in the womb? Learning about our world starts early – in pregnancy, the baby learns about life via what they can hear and feel. Prenatal researchers claim that a baby needs to know what type of world they are coming into and will make basic assumptions on whether the environment they are arriving into is threatening to their survival or a peaceful environment where they will be loved and nurtured. Will the baby be born into a world of abundance or scarcity? Will they be safe and protected? Diet, noise, and the mother's stress levels provide important clues for baby as to what the world is like out there. Researchers report that the emotional state of a mother in pregnancy impacts the developing baby in the womb and can have long-term effects on her child. Different children are affected in different ways. Stress is a very normal part of life, but severe

WELLNESS

long-term stress appears to have the most impact on babies. Several studies have confirmed the hormones of a chronically stressed mother markedly changes the blood flow and distribution of blood to the baby and can change her developing child’s physiology. While we can’t necessarily prevent some stressors, how can mothers help themselves and minimise the impact of stress? Knowing how to work with and regulate the nervous system and learning tools to help our body stay in the parasympathetic state (which is a state of relaxation and healing) can assist in the response whenever stress raises its head. For example, a simple technique of breathing in through the nose to the count of 4 and exhaling to the count of 8 is a quick way of communicating to the nervous system that you are safe and that it’s time to relax. Relaxing and softening the body, staying in the moment and using meditation, mindfulness and self-hypnosis techniques can also make a huge difference

to the way we deal with and navigate difficult situations. Since 2007 Warkworth hypnotherapist Helen Bartrom has been supporting pregnant couples to enjoy a relaxed and calm pregnancy and birth, which in turn benefits a growing and developing baby. From early 2020 she has witnessed the varied detrimental effect of lockdowns and restrictions on expecting parents and parents of young children and has been working to help support them navigate the stress using hypnotherapy and other techniques. You can read much more about how to best cope with this stage of life in her book Positive Birth in NZ using relaxation, hypnobirthing and mindfulness, which is available at www.positivebirths.co.nz

CAN I PLEASE PAT YOUR DOG? In the corner of a local café sits Monique Rowe. She is giggling to herself and tapping away at her keyboard as I approach. Writing another children’s book, it turns out. A man walks by with a guide dog and she smiles at him. She makes the comment that assistance dogs are another reason she wrote her book ‘Should I Pat Pat?’ “The only thing worse than the look on a parent’s face when you tell them their child can't pat a dog is the look on the child’s.” Monique pats the fur of her three-legged rescue dog ‘Daisy, who sleeps at her feet. “And then what is better than seeing children laughing and learning at the same time as reading your book?” “No one with a dog wants to have to tell a child they are not allowed to pat it. So I wanted to write a book that children would want to read and read it more than once. Each time learning more about what to do when they see a dog.” And she has done exactly that. With entertaining, rhyming prose, her book shows children the kinds of jobs dogs can do. Whether a companion dog, a police dog following a scent, or an assistance dog helping its owner. They must stop and think before asking permission. As the book says, 'Does the dog have a job to do? Is he allowed to play with you?' Monique delights in reading her books at kindergartens and schools.

Children love the practice pages, where they stand and follow along with the actions. "Even the teachers and parents join in the fun." 'Should I Pat Pat?' is one of several children’s books Monique has written. Each follows a similar theme, entertaining and educational. "Learning some good solid lessons while building their imaginations. I can't wait until my next book comes out." She says. Should I Pat Pat is available online or at Matakana Village Book Shop. www.monrowebooks.com www.facebook.com/monrowebooks

A SLICE OF PARADISE JK FARM With aspirations of leaving the city grind behind them, Auckland couple Kate Holden and Jonny Mckessar dreamt of creating a lifestyle that revolved around sustainability and growing their own veggies. During their search for a new place to call home, the couple came across Waipu. The surf was pumping, the weather was hot, the pizza was on point, and the pair immediately knew this was it. A year down the track, in 2019, the couple left Auckland with their tiny house in tow, and the little beach town of Waipu became the place they got to call home. Situated on a 13acre block surrounded by existing fruit trees and a small olive orchard, the pair quickly nestled their way into simpler living, adding cows, chickens and ducks to the farm which they called JK Farm. Setting out to bring their sustainable living visions to life, within the first month of their new venture, the duo had planted 112 cider apple trees, which Kate mentioned "have really taken off." She says, "we are looking forward to drinking our own homegrown cider in a couple of years."

Kate also shared that Covid was a blessing in disguise, as although business in Auckland was tough (the couple own four cafés within the Auckland region), they were thrilled to have the opportunity to get stuck into making their dream become a reality. "We levelled out an 800sqm garden space and put in 54 garden beds which are now thriving, supplying all of our household veggies, plus lots more that go back down to our café Scratch Bakers,” says Kate. “We couldn't stop there, so we renovated our shed into a three-bedroom house that we rent on Airbnb.” The couple enjoys hosting guests and meeting new people while sharing their experiences of what they do at JK Farm. They are also currently in the process of developing their very own JK Farm website with hopes to have this live by the end of the year - a platform where they will be able to sell their homegrown vegetables to the wider public and showcase all that this magnificent place has to offer.

"The last few years have been a lot of hard work, but we wouldn't have it any other way," says Kate. When they're not in the garden or running their cafés, the pair are active community members and absolute gogetters. Jonny still finds time to volunteer for the Waipu Fire Brigade, while Kate works four days a week for St John Ambulance. They feel lucky to be part of such a great community in such a beautiful part of New Zealand, doing what they love while living in their very own slice of paradise. www.instagram.com/jkfarmnz jkfarm.waipu@gmail.com REVIEW | LIFESTYLE

A GLASS AFFAIR Spanning over three generations, the use of glass as a material has played an integral part in the careers of Vicki Fanning’s family. Words by Milly Nolan Photograph by Michael McKeagg, courtesy of Sarjeant Gallery Te Whare o Rehua Whanganui

The local Matakana artist first studied ceramics in the early nineties and was later drawn to glass as a medium, so she returned to study at Whanganui Polytechnic, graduating in 2004. Often combining both ceramics and glass in her work, the multitalented artist has exhibited both nationally and overseas and is also the founder and maker of a popular local ceramics company, Frolic Ceramics.

different from each other, both involved glass as a focal point.

Fascinated by glass and its many multiuses, Vicki has most recently been working on constructing three new large-scale glassworks, which are currently on exhibition at the Sarjeant Gallery in Whanganui. Made with polycarbonate and flame-worked Borosilicate glass, the three abstract pieces have been inspired by her Father and Grandfather’s careers, which, although very

Vicki’s Grandfather, Aubrey Fanning, worked at the infamous ‘The Whanganui Glass Company’ (est c.1922), which produced the majority of New Zealand’s etched and sandblasted glass doors and windows up until the 1980s. While her Grandfather’s artistic skill with glass was known to Vicki, it was only through researching for the exhibition that she discovered that glass also played a huge role in her Father’s career in telecommunications, where he used quartz crystal to stabilise frequencies for radio transmitters and receivers. The pure serendipity of the three generations all working in glass has been a major inspiration for the exhibition. Named ‘Upon a Moment,’ the exhibition plays on the idea

that glass is something that we are so reliant on in our everyday lives, yet it is also so contradictory. “It is used to protect us, yet is also dangerous if it shatters,” says Vicki. “It can be seen through, yet is also used to keep people out. It’s fascinating when you start thinking of all its uses.” To create the works for the exhibition, Vicki chose three images of etched window designs from the original ‘The Whanganui Glass Company’ catalogue, drew them in a larger scale, cut the drawings out and then using the sun’s shadows to distort the image, she abstracted shapes from the original window design. With the newly formed shape, she reconstructed the image into a three-dimensional sculpture using the polycarbonate as a base and the glass as the final intricate detail which brought the pieces

to life. “I’ve always been interested in glass as a metaphor for the material in between,” says Vicki. “In my Grandfather’s case, the glass was used in doors or windows to create a screen or distraction between what is private and public - a distortion of sorts. In my Father’s case, glass was used for the first time in technology as a way to transmit information and data – again referencing the private to the public notion. This technology has now evolved through fiber optics, and the misrepresentation this can create.” These abstract ideas, along with Vicki’s creative flair, have resulted in three ethereal works of art that will leave you marvelling at their beauty as well as the history behind them. RE-WEAVING OF A FOLLY The 2022 Brick Bay Folly is revealed. Inspired by a site visit to Brick Bay and witnessing a friendly pīwakawaka (fantail), The Nest references the delicate stacking and weaving of twigs. Situated above a lake surrounded by mature exotic and native trees, the subtle use of Resene colours references the colours of the wingspan and tail of the pīwakawaka.

The winners and their sponsors in front of The Nest.

Architectural follies are found around the world and their purpose are to inspire and delight audiences. The Brick Bay Folly project provides an opportunity for emerging architects to test their ideas on a real-life project, manage construction, solve contingencies and participate in physical construction. The seventh and most recent Brick Bay Folly winner The Nest was officially

revealed and opened to the public in May this year. Three recent graduates of Auckland University's School of Architecture: Joseph Trace, Brandon Carter-Chan and Nicholas Rowsby designed and built their winning Folly while navigating the uncertainty of the 2021 lockdowns, as well as balancing the completion of the final year of their architecture degrees.

Sustainability as well as the global timber shortage was top of mind for the winning team, and so they proposed to recycle the timber from the 2019 Brick Bay Folly The Wooden Pavillion to prevent waste, and celebrate an ethos of renewal. This proved to be a painstaking task, with the team managing to save and catalogue 797 linear metres of timber. The resulting Folly is made up of approximately 95% recycled timber. However, the effort was worth it, with judge Pip Cheshire commenting “I think in the reuse of materials, what you're seeing here is a really interesting evolutionary view that materials are scarce resources.” The resulting 2022 Folly, The Nest, is a thought-provoking response to the landscape, resource use and the everpresent climate emergency. It’s open to the public at Brick Bay, 7 days a week from 10am. www.brickbay.co.nz www.facebook.com/brickbay ART

NEWSPAPERS FOR SALE BY UNICORN BOOKSHOP Unicorn Bookshop was established in 1989 by the late Richard Wasley. It has been a well-known retail institution in Warkworth for decades. We took over the business in 2014, and we have taken it through several transformations and reinventions.

Two significant transformations during 2016 and 2017. Firstly, we completely relocated the business from the shop in Neville Street, Warkworth, to its own custom digital platform. The second was re-calibrating the core business to specialise only in rare, vintage, antiquarian and out of print books. From late 2019, we started adding old newspapers and magazines to the Unicorn Bookshop range that come to us from several sources, including deceased estates. Newspapers must be at least 30 years old and have a historical significance, although we also sell general editions that are only significant because they are old. But, even without historical significance, they are still very interesting because you can read about a particular story that was breaking at the time when the public knew very little about it

behind the headlines. You only find out the detail in the fullness of history. They also provide great entertainment value because of all the old retro/vintage adverts where you are instantly transported back in time to when, in the 1970s, for example, you can see how our lives were so simple and low tech as well as seeing how little and expensive some things used to cost. For example, it is astonishing how much Kiwis used to pay for electronics, clothes and air tickets - while we paid so little for houses, food and fuel.

from 1886 and the newest was the first Christchurch Press of the new millennium, 1 January, 2000 – with everything in between. Our papers are mostly from New Zealand and the UK and as with all our books, we sell them to customers throughout New Zealand and worldwide.

Historical significance includes events like the Moon Landings, Wartime, 9/11, royalty, elections, large projects being opened, and historical weather events and disasters.

Another by-product of all the old advertisements is a popular Facebook group that Unicorn started in 2020. Called ‘Old Signs and Advertising - New Zealand’, this group hosts the very best and most entertaining of the old adverts that we come across in our stock. It has proven to be so popular simply because Unicorn has the content material that is not found elsewhere on the internet.

The oldest paper we have sold is the very first copy of the New Zealand Herald

THE BEST NATURALLY Dave Moore is a secondgeneration fisherman, and Darrin Fabricius has fished with Wild Fish for nearly 40 years. Together the Directors of Wild Fish NZ Ltd understand the responsibility they must uphold to both the ocean and the public while operating their six longline commercial fishing boats along the northeast coast of the North Island. Words Kate Moore

Wild Fish is a small independent fishing company that supplies its catch exclusively to Leigh Fisheries, based in Leigh. They were recently awarded the Seabird Smart Award for outstanding leadership and commitment to looking after New Zealand seabirds. In the 2021 fishing season, Wild Fish had over two million hooks individually set on their long lines, yet there were no Black Petrel deaths on any vessels. The cameras that verified this achievement were voluntarily placed on each of the boats in 2016. The decks of Wild Fish vessels have also been graced by both Ministry of Primary Industries and NIWA observers to validate the information gathered. The Seabird Smart Awards are an initiative of the Southern Seabirds Trust. The trust is an alliance of representatives from the seafood industry, government, WWF-New Zealand and

Te Ohu Kaimoana and is supported by environmental groups, eco-tourism operators, recreational fishers, fishing gear retailers and seabird ecologists. Both Dave and Darrin credit this win to the young skippers and the crews - as they are the ones that have the additional stress with every haul. As Dave says, “no one goes out there trying to catch birds, it just sometimes happens, but we are in such a privileged position to do what we do. We will do everything we can to show we are transparent in our fishing operation. The cameras don’t lie.” Because of their initiative to place the cameras on board early on, hardly any of their 21 strong crew have fished without them. Wild Fish’s bounty from the deep blue is shipped worldwide (courtesy of Leigh Fisheries), handled by top chefs, ending

up on the plates of discerning patrons. One of these outstanding restaurants is Shin, a fine dining Michelin star restaurant located in Zurich, Switzerland. But there are many reputable spots in our backyard, like Cocoro in Ponsonby and Pasture, located in Parnell. “These chefs know quality,” Dave says. Longlining allows the final product to be the best as each fish is caught on a single hook. This individual approach is maintained once the fish is on board as the crew use careful handling techniques of each fish, which means that the fish maintain the crew’s high standards. “Quality is the most important aspect of the job,” says Dave. The better the quality, the more likely it will be on the menu and stay there.” dave@wildfishnz.com www.facebook.com/wildfishnz DISCOVER
