X-craft marks the spot
It may surprise people to know that Leigh is at the forefront of technology when it comes to robotics and Artificial Intelligence, thanks to local resident, Philip Solaris.
Words Luke WilliamsonPhilip Solaris is the CEO of X-craft Enterprises, a robotics company based in Leigh. “I tell people we’re problem solvers… it just happens that we use robotic craft to solve those problems.”
X-craft specialises in uncrewed aerial and sea craft. Philip offers examples as the best way to describe their work. “Niue has a problem around illegal fishing; they asked us what technology would enable them to protect their coastal marine environment – 12-nautical-mile zone, and the larger Exclusive Economic Zone [EEZ – 200 nautical miles]. We ran a series of coastal technology
demonstrations using uncrewed multi-rotor and fixed-wing aerial craft, and then trained local people to operate those drones longterm. We have proposed using uncrewed sea vessels for large area operations in Niue, and throughout the Pacific, but these are currently only operating in New Zealand.”
The aerial craft in X-craft’s portfolio are also involved in predator-control projects in New Zealand. “We have an accurate air deployment system that can drop something from about 60 metres and land it within a metre of a target. It can be used for baits, remote sensors, reforestation and even
emergency response. It's a highly accurate and adaptable system.”
Philip explains that robotics is ideally suited to small nations that don't have a lot of money. “Take the Hauraki Gulf as an example; I could put two-dozen boats out there and protect and patrol the Gulf 24/7 at a fraction of the price of a standard patrol boat. From there, you can scale it up to tackle the problem of patrolling New Zealand’s EEZ, which is huge!”
The multi-purpose capabilities of these craft is another important point Philip wants to emphasise. “These systems can be utilised for humanitarian and environmental purposes – emergency response, life-saving, data collection, environmental monitoring, gathering information on the state of our seas, and military defence.”
An exciting area of progress for Philip is in Artificial Intelligence (AI). “The weak point in robotic systems is their communication. The solution to communication failure is to develop internal capability for the robot to make decisions under certain parameters and conditions, and that gives us much greater flexibility and reliability.” Philip refers back to uncrewed sea craft monitoring fishing zones, ‘Those boats can also carry out emergency response. However, if they're in a storm and lose connectivity, we still want them to be able to go to an area, identify people or objects in the water, and assist those people. It could mean the difference between life and death.”
The risks of AI is a subject Philip takes extremely seriously. “AI is very dangerous when used for the wrong applications. However, it offers amazing potential in the area I work in – trying to help the planet, and focussing on environmental and humanitarian operations. AI is going to alter everything and it’s quite scary...and quite beautiful.”
The core team of X-craft is about five people, but it expands to up to 16 as work volume dictates. “Our company was very decentralised, but we're in the process of building a new workshop near Leigh, which sort of centralises everybody again,” says Philip. “We need to allow for some manufacturing of our solutions.”
Looking ahead, Philip is very excited about an upcoming submersible project. “It will be a robot that is very difficult to distinguish from a life form and a system that is extremely autonomous. There’s never been anything like it. We’ll be able to observe what’s going on in the ocean without any disturbance to marine life whatsoever. I think we’ll get data we’ve never seen before. We also want to deploy it in Antarctica because this system will overcome many of the mechanical problems encountered in that extreme environment. My hopes are very high for th is project.”

Double the fun
“I was eating eyeballs, and I got a leg and an arm shot off. I got swung out of a bathtub and up to the ceiling, smacked by a chair into the kitchen and did an amazing gecko crawl across a wall.” That sounds like a tough day for any one of us, but it was a dream role for Tineke Robson when she was stunt double for lead actress, Alyssa Sutherland, in the recently-released movie, Evil Dead Rise.
“I really loved doubling for Alyssa,” says Tineke. “Alyssa and I got to know each other really well, and we worked together on the physicality of Ellie, her character. Then I would carefully watch the monitor and be aware of where she was at so I could do a good job when I stepped in.”
Tineke began theatre acting as a child and has a degree in Performing Arts, specialising in dance and musical theatre. However, it
was when she was working on the Justice League movie in England, 2017, that she got her first taste of stunt work. “I had all the skills from doing lots of sports and dancing as a kid, and I’m always excited to learn something new.”
Tineke especially enjoyed the bathroom scene and gecko crawl across the wall of the house in Evil Dead Rise. “It’s all on wires, and I was in a harness with pulleys and ropes guided by an amazing stunt team who always made me feel safe. The elevator scene was great too. Lots of cables, getting hung up, choked, lots of blood…it was fantastic!” sh e laughs
As the movie progressed, Alyssa had to apply increasing amounts of makeup and prosthetics. Tineke had to match her appearance at all times so preparation took
quite some time. “Makeup for me, on a good day, was about an hour, but that became four hours as the character developed.”
Tineke was completely involved in the planning and choreography for her stunts, working with the props and costume departments to make sure they were safe and effective. “Alyssa had to do some of the stunts as well, so they would test it out on me first because we didn’t want her to g et hurt.”
Since finishing Evil Dead Rise, Tineke has struggled to find ongoing work as an actor or stunt woman. However, she is not one to stand still and has added training in scuba diving and boxing to her resumé, and is planning on becoming a free-diving instructor. “All these things tie in together and I would love to do underwater stunts.”
Words Luke Williamson
Stunt double, Tineke Robson, is taking some time out for herself, which is not surprising considering what she has been doing recently; eating eyeballs, getting shot at, and crawling across walls, to name a few.A wide selection of fine WINES, SPIRITS & CRAFT BEERS for every occasion
But that’s not all. Tineke has also just finished a certificate in accounting. “I want to know how to deal with my finances as an actor and there just isn’t much information out there specific to our industry. I would love to be able to help other actors as well because everyone should know this stuff.”
A final resolution for Tineke for 2023 is to implement a regime of rest. “I’m a goer and I tend to keep going until I crash and then need a week to recover. But this year, I’m imposing periods of deep, conscious rest into what I do. No TV, no phones, no computer and, so far, that’s serving me really well.”
Working as an actor is still Tineke’s number one passion and she continues to take acting classes and attend auditions. She is also writing a solo show which is slowly coming to fruition. “I want it to be really engaging and touching, and I want people to feel different about themselves when they leave.”

Labour of love
A stunning house at Langs Beach is a recent project by OTC. Despite some challenges, it is one they will never forget.
How is the interior of the house laid out, and what materials did you use?
We used American oak on the floors and feature panelling, with cool coastal tones throughout to create a luxe resort vibe which is further complemented by the open-plan living, seamless indoor/outdoor flow, and retracting louvres. Each bathroom has its own unique style. Lots of textures and subtle lighting brings them to life.
What was the inspiration behind the architect’s design?
Inspiration was taken from the Island Vista. The layered silhouette of island and headland landform is mirrored in the form of the architecture, with irregular handling of roof pitches and an extruded form along the northern axis.
The courtyard layout creates visual and spatial connection. It also provides the ‘separation yet connection’ between the main north-wing and family accommodation south-wing. It allows for sheltered outdoor living regardless of wind direction and provides a light-filled inward focus so that neighbouring structures to the east and west can be visually screened.
What challenges, if any, did the builders face during the construction of the home and how were they resolved?
With earthworks commencing just as the Covid pandemic started in early 2020, the build faced an array of challenges around lockdowns, supply restraints with key contractors unable to leave Auckland, and international timber supply issues, as well as logistics of a very narrow site.
How is the exterior constructed?
Like many of the homes we have had the privilege of building, there is a stage of evolution, which in this case saw the addition of a plunge pool complete with a feature stone wall, waterfall, and perfectly landscaped gardens, to really create a tropical oasis like no other. A combination of (80% recycled) aluminium cladding and cedar timber strikes the balance between low maintenance durability and the natural visual appeal of timber.
What is the overall impression of the home's finishing and technology, and how do the homeowners feel about it?
While this home was a true labour of love given the challenges we faced with the covid pandemic, it is one that we will never forget. The end result is beyond beautiful, every inch of the home has such a high standard of finishing with complex detail, you can’t help but feel like you’re walking through a piece of art. With state-of-the-art automation, movie room (complete with motion seat), sound system, security and lighting – our happy home owners will never want to leave.
What is the clients’ favourite feature/room of their new home?
“Watching Top Gun with the sensation of being in the cockpit, feeling the turns, the dives and explosions rates tops. My home theatre with its motion seat and sensational lighting ticks the bucket list.”
“I absolutely love the beauty of the master bedroom. It has a resort-style feel to it with gorgeous sarked ceilings. Summer nights are cooled with the addition of a ‘Big Ass Fan’. The room feels warm and understated. Nothing can beat waking up to the stunning view of the beach and across to the Whangarei Heads with my morning cuppa. It feels like perfection.”

Painting from memory
As the owner of Matakana shop, Neighbourhood Recycle, Olivia Courtney may be familar to some. But her real passion lies in painting.
Olivia has always drawn and painted, her parents have all of her kindy and primary artworks saved in their family home. She left Warkworth after finishing at Mahurangi College in 2013 and then graduated from Massey (Wellington) in 2018 with a postgrad in Fine Arts. In this time, she was able to develop her painting process and was fortunate to be mentored by NZ contemporary painter, Simon Morris. Now residing back at home, she works selling preloved clothing day-to-day, and any other minute she can
be found painting in her studio in Matakana. It's hard for Olivia to hone down on what truly makes her return to the practice time and time again, but she recognises that it “demands for you to be very present and this is perhaps my form of meditation. With screens dominating our visual experiences and our desire for instant information,” says Olivia, “I am interested in paint as a slower medium. This process-based work is an inquiry into what painting can offer that screen-based media cannot.”
Mediating through feeling and process, Olivia combines a vocabulary that remains open to interpretation. “The act of painting reflects aliveness; the exchange with paint physically means the visual experience of the spaces are contemplative and emotional.” Olivia challenges the viewer to apprehend and embody the information presented. Memory is a theme coming up in her work more and this is often the catalyst for the direction of the work.
Recently moving into oil paints has been transformational for Olivia's works. “The colour is so vibrant and there is so much room for play with the materiality. The end result is punchy and rich in tactile spaces.”
Olivia uses local carpenters Jackson Balzat, Jake Meek and Brent Courtney for framing. “The pine or cedar finishes of the frames help enhance the work for an interior setting.”
Railway Gallery and Studio in Newmarket has recently been taken over by Erin O'Malley. Olivia was lucky to be picked up by Erin to exhibit with the gallery over the year. This July, Olivia will be exhibiting a new body of work with Railway, which will explore the memories surrounding the relationship with her Nana. The documenting of this process will be happening on her Instagram stories.

What areas do you cover?
The inside story
Liz Kerby is founder of Lizzie K & Co, and has a lifelong passion for the inner workings of houses and what that says about the people that live in them.
What is your niche market for your area of interior design?
My niche market is home-owners who are looking to renovate their existing homes and require design flair, expertise and industry experience to help them fully realise their home’s potential.
What services do you offer and what is the process?
I work alongside clients developing their design brief, creating an overall cohesive interior and exterior design scheme, with supporting detailed working plans and a design 'blueprint’, including specifications used for product sourcing, quoting, building works, and fit-out stages.
The Design Consultation Stage starts with an initial telephone chat to establish design
services required. Followed by a one-anda-half hour, in-home chargeable design meeting. This is followed by a Design Fee and Scope of Works for interior design services required.
The Design Concept and Development Stages includes 2D plans, 3D rendering, design Mood Boards, and specifications for kitchen and scullery design, bathroom, ensuite and laundry design, customised builtin storage solutions, interior surfaces finishes and fittings schemes.
Design Coordination and Fitout Stages include recommended product sourcing and procurement from my network of trade suppliers, liaison and site meetings with cabinet makers, suppliers and the building works team as required.
The area I cover for interior design services is from Warkworth to Matakana Coast to Auckland North Shore and central suburbs.
What are Mood Boards and why do you use them?
Design Mood Boards are key visual tools that showcase the proposed designed style of each space. They include samples and images of the feature finishes and fittings scheme. They are perfect for keeping on track with cross references to notations on working plans and specification documents.
What is your personal experience in the industry?
I have been working in the interior and design industry most of my working life, including 25-plus-years in bespoke kitchen and bathroom design, residential renovations, interior schemes, and project coordination; commercial interior and exhibition design; furniture design and development for a retail brand. I also studied a Diploma Course in Interior Design and have a SketchUp for Interior Design certification.
Why should people use you to design the interior of their homes?
I’ve had the privilege to work with many types of clients, projects and budgets. Whether a new kitchen or bathrooms are required, or an interior paint and finishes scheme, I will listen carefully to understand clients’ needs and follow through with creative solutions.
Top interior renovation tips
When considering a renovation or new-build, engage an interior designer early on in the process. This will save money and time in the long run and de-stress the whole process. Spend the time developing your design brief prior to meeting with a designer. This means right from the start your designer and you are on the same path and will minimise costly changes and indecision.
Your home should tell the story of who you are and what you love. A good experienced designer will be able to interpret and challenge your ideas and deliver above your expectations.

Building a future
Mahurangi College is providing a solid foundation for students wishing to enter the building industry, to develop their skills and be ready to walk straight into a job by the time they leave.
The innovative Mahurangi College Building Academy offers outstanding trade pathways for their Level 2 and 3 senior students.
Housed on site, in a purpose-built workshop, their programs have been developed to incorporate five theory units at each level.
“We are now working in collaboration with BCITO (Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation) which is now part of Te Pukenga,” says Grant Robinson, Building Academy Director.
Topics include health and safety, communication, materials, hand tools, calculations and drawings. “Students undertake a compulsory health and safety course at the beginning of the year so they learn the importance of safety from the outset. Having embedded theory units adds considerable value to the programs and complements the physical projects that take place in the workshop.”
At Year 12, workshop projects include building saw stools, park-bench seats and picnic benches. This helps prepare students for the big project of building
cabins. “They work in groups and before they pick up a tool, they are shown the correct procedures for both hand and power tools, including the correct use of PPE (Personal Prote ctive Equipment).”
There is a continuation in Year 13, completing cabins started the previous year, giving attention to interior lining and finer finishing details. “They will also be completing our tiny house from last year’s cohort, which is imminent,” says Grant. As in previous years, this will be auctioned, with all funds raised going back to the college. Students also undertake an off-site course in Height Safety which also attracts credits.
“In collaboration with BCITO, at the end of the school year, we hold a prize-giving ceremony where certificates are awarded to students.” Parents are invited to attend and also see the projects that their children have been working on throughout the year.
The Building Academy works in partnership with Te Tai Tokerau. Their funding goes towards material costs, such as timber and fasteners, along with students gaining their
driving licence. “This year, we have been very fortunate to have secured sponsorship from Matakana Bayleys and Warkworth ITM. This sponsorship has provided safety boots and dust jackets for each student. We look forward to growing this partnership in th e future.
“We are extremely proud that Mahurangi College can provide this unique opportunity for our students,” says Gateway teacher and Building Academy Coordinator, Lori Yau. The Mahurangi College Building Academy has become a sought-after program for those looking to enter a trade. “Students completing the course are work-ready, and are snapped up by local employers to begin their apprenticeships.”
Principal Tony Giles adds, “While these programmes are designed to teach skills and knowledge, they also ensure students are thriving and growing to become wellrounded, talented and creative young adults who excel.”

Setting standards
Duncan Northcott started designing tables in 2018 for family and friends and it soon became a thriving business. Here he talks about what sets his tables apart from the rest, and his plans for the future.
How did Benchmark Build start, and what inspired the business?
Benchmark started when my parents had some 20 yearold dry gum that they wanted to put to use, so we decided to build an outdoor rustic table for the family to gather around, and from there I found my niche. I work full-time as a qualified builder so after work and weekends I’m in the shed buil ding tables.
What types of furniture does Benchmark Build make?
Benchmark builds a range of indoor and outdoor table sets, and in the near future there will also be outdoor lounging sets.
What is a typical day like?
My typical day is going to work at 7am, getting home at 4.30pm, and straight into answering people’s enquiries and building the tables. When the table is finished, it’s on the trailer and off for delivery.
How are the pieces of furniture crafted, and what is the design process?
My tables are very well thought of, using the correct fixings to stand the test of time and making sure I get all the dry timber. After the table is fully built, I put on two coats of oil or stain depending on what the client wants. I have designed my tables mocking up different legs to see what will work, and doing research on how strong the legs will be. Clients send me a message about what they’re after and pay the 50% deposit, and from there the table is built with a
What sets you apart from other furniture makers, and why should people choose your products?
My tables are hand-crafted by myself with perfection in mind. I use thick timber to make them as strong as they can be which sets me apart from the big makers of furniture. Each piece has its own quirk that stands out.
What kind of wood is used and how is it treated?
I mainly deal with macrocarpa as I love the look of the timber once oiled or stained. It’s easy to work with and is long lasting. Two coats of oil/stain helps protect it even more.
Where does your business operate, and who buys your furniture?
My business is located in Mangawhai Heads and I have buyers all over the North Island from Kaitaia to Palm erston North.
What do you do when you’re not working or making tables?
I enjoy getting out to the beach and walking my dog. When I have a weekend free getting away in the roof-top tent somewhere, well away from the nearest town.

June is the month of the shortest day leading us into the coldest months of winter. Most seeds need to be sown under cover. Plantings are best made under cloches or, if uncovered, in a warm sunny garden bed. Raised beds work well for winter planting. Seeds you sow now are setting up the early spring garden. There is still time to get your garlic planted too!
Plant
Creating fertility
We often have everything we need at our fingertips to build fertility in our garden without the need to buy in expensive fertilisers or pay to dispose of waste streams. Food scraps, grass clippings, used potting mixes, autumn leaves, crop waste, coffee grounds, manure, and cardboard are all potential sources of fertility for the garden.
A compost heap, a worm farm, a bokashi bucket, and in-situ composting are all good ways to add these goodies back into the soil. A simple in-situ composting technique, as an alternative to building a compost heap, is to make a compost heap inside a raised bed. Line the bottom of the bed with cardboard, if you have it, then fill with alternate layers of carbon-rich and nitrogen-rich materials. Nitrogen-rich materials you can use are food scraps, grass clippings, coffee grounds, and manure. Carbon-rich materials to use are crop residues, leaves, pine needles, shredded cardboard, rotted sawdust, used potting mixes and peat. Make the carbon layers twice as thick as the nitrogen layers. Build the layers up over the top of the bed as it will settle. Then leave it for the winter months to break down. In spring, before planting, add a final layer of soil or compost to plant into.
Another simple technique that works very well in conventional gardens is trench composting. Dig a trench about 25cm deep and progressively fill it with food scraps, backfilling as you go. By spring you will have a fertile bed and a lot of happy worms. This is so easy-care and very effective.
Coriander
Coriander will grow well through our winters, particularly if it is under cover, either in a hothouse, sunporch, or under a cloche in a sunny bed. Coriander will germinate in temperatures above 10 degrees celsius, but it is important to use fresh seed as the viability of coriander seeds declines quickly. Sow the seeds about half-a-centimetre deep and 5cms apart, direct into soil or potting mix. To get a continuous supply, sow seeds every two to three weeks. Your fresh-tasting coriander crop will be ready to harvest in around 30 days. Cut top growth with scissors or by hand but don’t pull up the whole plant. It will keep producing for around another 30 days.

Fruit/vege of the month: Apples
Just like a lemon tree, apples are a staple for a home garden. If space is an issue, there are many varieties of apple available on dwarf rootstock that you can plant as close as 2m apart. Espaliering an apple tree along a sunny fence is also a great way to make use of small spaces. Choose a sunny spot that will get at least six hours of sun a day. Apples prefer a rich, free-draining soil but they are tolerant of most soils. Take time to dig a planting hole twice as deep and wide as the root ball. Fill the hole with good topsoil and compost. Where drainage is poor, consider planting on a raised mound, but be aware this will be prone to drying out as well. Check with your plant nursery when choosing varieties to give good disease resistance and adequate cross pollination. Harvest apples from mid-summer onwards depending on variety. They always taste best eaten straight from the tree. Be sure to make use of any windfalls or pest damaged fruit in cooking or preserves.

2. Stir in marshmallows.
3. Spoon half the mixture into a 3-cup bowl.
4. Top with half the fudge topping.
5. Repeat layers.

Polish goodness
Freshly baked sourdoughs, scrumptious pastries and big smiles are what you can expect when you walk through Goose Bakery’s door. They have put in a lot of work to make the place alive again. Ola, the baker of the business, has a love of baking that she says is impossible to control – baking day and night, always trying to learn new things and test out new recipes. She started baking in her gap year and once finishing her tertiary education at Toi Whakaari New Zealand Drama school, she decided to make her way back to baking. Michał, her fiancée, is “very lucky to be coming back home and always having something to eat”, says Ola. “And it was because of this that Michal said ‘let's open a bakery!’”
Michał’s twin sister, Dorota, and Ola, “would always joke about opening up a little place serving Polish treats, but we never believed it would ever happen. But as a family everything is possible.”
Dorota and her big smile and infectious personality can be found behind the till, with Michał brewing the perfect organic Eighthirty coffee, and Ola throwing flour around in t he bakehouse.
While Michał was renovating the main café house – painting, tiling and building – Ola and Dorota decided to open the bakehouse windows to start to introduce themselves to the locals and show them some of the goodies that they would have in the store. The reception was overwhelmingly positive and the locals so supportive, and from the beginning of May they have been fully open from Wednesdays to Sundays.
“With the future of Goose Bakery looking bright, it is our passion and determination to consistently bring delicious products (with a bit of Polish charm) to the local community who have been a mass ive support.”

More than just a café
A welcome addition to Matakana Village, Zen Den is a charming blend of café, retail store, and bookshop that embraces wisdom, wellness, and woo.
Authenticity and values aren't merely catchphrases at Zen Den, but the foundation of their ethos. Environmental sustainability and organic offerings are prioritised, evident in practises like not endorsing single-use takeaway cups. This dedication underlines Zen Den's commitment to preserving the environment and promoting sustainable lifestyle choices.
This sanctuary invites tranquillity, rejuvenation, and connection, and despite being a recent addition to the village, has already drawn attention with its expert baristas crafting artisanal brews. The rich, organic Kokako coffee they serve exemplifies their prowess. For tea lovers, a delightful selection of 16 Zealong organic teas is available. Offering a unique, caffeine-free alternative, the super brews are a creative spin on traditional hot drinks. These nourishing concoctions blend cacao with mushroom infusions, presenting a comforting, and nourishing treat.
The bookshop at Zen Den is a curated trove of wisdom, wellness, and woo. It showcases a diverse range of books, some with missing information that piques curiosity and invites exploration. It's a space where stories come to life, conversations are sparked, and knowledge is shared.
The vision extends beyond the current offering. Plans are underway for constructing a yoga and breathwork studio adjacent to the existing space. This exciting expansion will further foster community wellness and promote a holistic approach to health and wellbeing.
More than just a café, bookshop, or retail store, Zen Den is a space for individuals to discover themselves, engage in enriching interactions, and embrace wellness in all its forms. Even though it's just starting its journey, this welcoming, authentic corner in Matakana Village eagerly awaits your visit. Open from 8am to 4pm daily, with on-site parking.

Resort-like family home with majestic views
Emerging from covid lockdown, Kerry and Andrew Brown were desperate to leave the confines of life in Auckland City. In search of a property that gave them the outdoor space and activities they craved, whilst still being close to their family in Auckland, and with the new Te Arai Links Golf Course and Resort imminent, they decided to focus their search on Te Arai in North Auckland.
When 267 School Road came up for sale, Kerry and Andrew Brown knew they had found their rural idyll. Less than five minutes from Te Arai Links Golf Resort and a stone’s throw from the beautiful Forestry and Te Arai beaches, the position was perfect.
Andrew’s background in landscaping and Kerry’s experience in interior design came in handy. The house needed updating and the surrounding forest and grounds needing taming to ensure low maintenance enjoyment all year round. “Driving into the property we were awestruck by the centuryold native forest. But the extent of the views were unexpected. As we entered the main living area of the house, large north-facing windows framed mature QE11 native forest, rolling pastures, expansive sea and island views stretching from the Whangarei Heads, Hen and Chickens, to Little Barrier.
“The architecture and original interior included some unique features. We fell in love with the fireplace first; the double-height Riverstone Fireplace was a real attention grabber. The kitchen/dining and living areas, although connected, have their own individual feel and identity, a welcome change from the standard open-plan rooms of the architecture today. The separate cottage brings total bedrooms and bathrooms to four, including two ensuites. Plenty of room for family and friends. What tipped us over the edge was the discovery of a secret garden in the middle of the native forest, including Rimu, Puriri, Nikau and our very own centuries-old Kauri Grove with abundant bird life. Usually you have to bush bash through forest like this but here you could just stroll down a wide stretch of lawn and enjoy everything from a distance that allows you to take it all in. It’s astounding all this is just so close to Auckland. In under
five minutes you can be playing golf at the world-renowned Te Arai Links or sitting in their restaurant enjoying cocktails and gr eat food.”
Kerry and Andy spent two years renovating the house, adding those essential luxury fittings and fixtures that we have all come to expect from contemporary family living. The heated pool, expansive deck, outdoor kitchen and dining add to this wonderful home, promising hours of relaxation and fun.
Kerry and Andy are reluctantly selling School Road. With family now living overseas they want to spend a good portion of the year in Europe, so need to downsize their New Zealand investment.

Keeping it Real
Ra Gossage (Ngati Wai & Ngati Ruahine) has been singing her own songs since the age of 19, and performing since her mid-twenties. Her first performance was at Leigh Sawmill in 2007 and she was back there this April, supporting local favourites White Chapel Jak to a very appreciative, sold-out crowd.
Rā has recorded quite a few of her own tracks over the years, but now she has a new four-track EP out, with a launch gig at the end of June. This is the first time her work has been professionally recorded and she enjoyed the process enormously. “I’ve been sitting on these songs for a while now, and things have finally come together to get them out there: the time, the people – and the money,” she says with her trademark big, beautiful grin.
Her music has been self-funded by her art, which can be found at Unity Collection in Matakana, and the Poi Room in both Ponsonby and Newmarket. Rā paints contemporary kowhaiwhai paintings and panels – distinctive Maori designs of repeating patterns which can be linked to specific iwi and their whakapapa.
She grew up with music as part of her everyday life and remembers her father,
children’s author and illustrator, Peter Gossage, walking around the house playing his guitar. There were always parties and gatherings at marae, with the aunties singing waiata – her mother had a big family and Rā’s uncles were usually on the guitars as well.
Rā mentions Ricki Lee Jones and Van Morrison as influences on her style, but Amy Winehouse definitely springs to mind, too.
Her EP has soul but it’s playful, sassy and just a little bit R’n’B too. The first track, ‘In the Moments’ rocks out a little, while ‘Love Lets Go’ is a cruisy hip-swinger. Track three, ‘Get Up’ evokes a summer Saturday morning and inspires a happy bounce; ‘Missing You’ is a wistful, smoky slow-dance.
They’re all quite different but Rā’s great voice, with a slight echo on her vocals in

the production, links it all together. Huntaway Sound Studio in Mount Eden did an excellent job recording her songs with a full band behind her – the Fleetwoods.
“These are songs about how people relate to others, what they go through, about love and loss and friendship… they’re written with aroha from my own experiences,” says Rā. The environment at her whānau’s papa kāinga (ancestral land) in Pakiri is a constant source of inspiration too, with its ancient groves of pohutukawa, sand dunes, and the ocean stretching to the horizon. It’s been in her whānau for hundreds of years and Rā feels that deep connection to the whenua in her bones.
You can buy a digital version of her ‘Real’ EP from her page at bandcamp.com – there’s a limited edition CD too, with beautiful kowhaiwhai cover art designed by Rā. At her launch gig she’ll be singing with Nathan Boston, the guitarist from White Chapel Jak. She’ll be supported by Keidis Watts, her 16-year-old cousin, who, like Rā’s own teenage son, Charlie (currently at Auckland Uni doing a music degree), plays piano. Our tip – get there early.

Levelling the playing field
Hamish Barton’s first-hand experience as a professional cricketer, followed by a career in high-performance sport across cricket, netball and canoe racing, sent him on a journey of self-discovery, in which he is now helping other people do the same through his coaching business.
Words Milly Nolan“I played professional cricket for a number of years but in my mid-twenties I burned myself out through a lack of self-belief, confidence and imposter syndrome – all of which were pretty deep rooted,” says Hamish, a Matakana local. “In the end, I just stopped playing altogether because I wasn't enjoying it anymore.” Instead, Hamish went to Lincoln University where he gained a degree in Sports Management. With cricket still in the blood, he fell into coaching which took him to Argentina where he coached the Argentine National Cricket team for four years, and where he met his wife and mother of his t wo sons, M ai.
On returning to New Zealand, Hamish coached the New Zealand women's cricket team, White Ferns, and it was during this
time that he started to become more curious about the mind and the impact it has on how people perform. “This fascination really launched me into a journey of selfdiscovery. I’ve done a lot of work on myself to better understand who I am and what I'm about,” says Hamish. With his newfound knowledge, Hamish moved out of sport and started working at Bayleys as a coaching and development manager, focussed on helping the business grow, whilst also mentoring and supporting the staff to be the best they could be each day. At the beginning of this year, he took the plunge to start his own coaching business under the umbrella of Next Evolution Performance, a company that is run by fellow local, Alex Davids. “I do one-onone coaching, but fundamentally most of my work is with corporates, helping leaders and
teams to sustain high performance without the burnout,” says Hamish. “I do a lot of work around energy management, structuring their day, understanding mindset, understanding the importance of sleep, breathwork and nutrition – basically all the different elements that work towards helping people to perform at a high level consistently every day.”
Locally, Hamish has been offering opportunities to support men’s health –running weekly Koha meditation sessions for men, and also a men’s yoga stretch class at Bali Gardens. “The meditation sessions and workshops I run help men delve deep into some of the stuff that might be going on for them,” says Hamish. “It can be hard for men to stop, sit still, be silent and do some selfinquiry for half an hour, but it’s really the only
way to grow. I love that now that I have done my yoga teacher’s training, I can share with other men the positive impact that yoga and meditation has had on me. “My journey of self-discovery has made me a much happier person, I’m way more present and less reactive,” says Hamish. “I'm less judgmental with how I am with myself, and how I am with others. I’ve really peeled back the layers so I can be the authentic me without worrying what others think. The energy I want to bring into each day is just to be present, be where my feet are; connecting with my breath during the day, and feel the joy in everything that I'm doing. Even when things aren't going well, the simple joy of being alive and being able to sense and feel that emotion is a game changer.”

A cut above the rest
It’s been an incredible season for sheep shearer, Toa Henderson, who has truly made his mark on the New Zealand competition scene. This season has come to an end but he has his eye on the biggest prize of all for the next season.
Words Emily PattulloThe 2023 shearing competition season is now over and it’s been a huge success for Toa Henderson who has had 11 wins in total, including Warkworth, Kumeu and Waitomo. But that’s not all, he also came second in the North Island Sheep Shearer of the Year, and second in the New Zealand Shearing Championships, which took place on the first weekend of April.
Toa has been shearing sheep all his life. He grew up on a farm in Kaiwaka and comes from a family of shearers. Having started out competing at a young age and discovering he did well in the lower grades, he then went to Australia for ten years. On returning home, he entered the Warkworth A&P Show in 2019 and won the Open Final, and so “got the bug back again”. Since then he has been one to watch.
The end of that year was a devastating one and nearly put an end to Toa’s shearing career, when his 18-month-old son was struck and killed by a vehicle in Southland shearing town, Mataura, on 21 December 2019. Initially unable to shear for some time afterwards, he credits his wife, Phoebe, for supporting and encouraging him back onto the sh earing circuit.
Toa now lives with his wife and two children
in Wellsford, and has his sights firmly set on winning the Golden Shears next season, which he says has “always been a dream of mine. It is what any shearer wants to achieve and it is my lifet ime goal”.
In the ‘off’ season Toa can be found working as a shearing contractor as well as doing other farm work and tree planting. But is there ever an off season when your dream is so close to being achieved? Only time will tell.

Thrilling new read
Rings On Water is the much-awaited sequel to Blood on Vines, by author Madeleine Eskedahl, who says her local area is where she draws inspiration from.
Local author, Madeleine Eskedahl, is due to release her second novel in the Matakana Series, Rings On Water, this month. A crime thriller, it’s about Sergeant Bill Granger, the local policeman, who is called in to investigate when a young woman is found dead at a local beach. What seems to be a straightforward case of an unfortunate death, turns into a complex web of small-town secrets and a desire for revenge that will soon place Bill’s family in danger.
Madeleine’s debut thriller, Blood On Vines, was published in 2021, the first instalment in the Matakana Series. She says she’s humbled by the support from local readers, who helped make it Matakana Village Books’ number one-selling title of 2021.
“I feel fortunate living in an environment so full of factors to draw inspiration from,” says the local author. “I love to explore the different themes and social fabric of everyday life.”
Madeleine finds research “interesting and fun”, and has been fortunate to attend forensic conferences and, coming up in June, she is attending two ‘Writers’ Police Academies’ in the USA. “I’m looking forward to stimulating topics such as CSI, Homicide 101, Firearms and the Use of Force Simulator, as well as Death by Powders and Pills, to name but a few,” she says.
Currently writing the third book in the series, ominously titled Angels Of Clay, in her spare time Madeleine enjoys gardening and monitoring the Korora, our little blue penguins nesting at Ti Point.
Rings On Water, will be launched at The Vintry in Matakana on Sunday 25 June at 2pm. Join her for a glass of wine and nibbles. RSVP to MadeleineEskedahlAuthor@gmail.com to secure your spot.

The no bull yacht club
Words Alex StoneLikened by one blown-away traveller to Tin Tin's Black Island, due to its imposing black cliffs, Rakitu or Arid Island certainly looks deserving of its English name. But behind the cliffs, in a horseshoe-shaped valley, it’s quite fer tile, and supported a Ngāti Rehua community for centuries, as well as a pākehā farm for ove r 100 years.
The Rope family farmed the island from 1956 to 2010. Bryce Rope owned a shipping company, which helped make this remote (though fertile) farm economically viable. He ran 1,000 sheep and 120 breeding cows. Though the Ropes owned a shipping company, and also built wharves around New Zealand, the Chatham, and Pitt Islands, they declined to make this special island any more accessible. There’s still no wharf at The Cove, the only anchorage on Rakitu, a sheltered NW-facing tight little bay. Space for only a dozen boats.
The stories go that Bryce Rope needed to get a new starter motor for a bulldozer delivered to Rakitu. Legendary seaplane pilot, Fred Ladd, dropped it out of the window while passing, expecting it to land harmlessly in a paddock. But it conked the island’s prize bull on the head, killing him instantly. A laconic message from the Ropes to the seaplane read: “Part arrived safely, bull dead.”
The first in a series of shipwrecks and shenanigans along our rugged shores; we begin with an explanation of possibly the world’s most unusual yacht club burgee. Open weekdays
The dead bull features on the flag of the (fairly informal) Arid Island Yacht Club, which holds one race to the island each year. Sometimes. And on these days, a curious ritual unfolds. First, there’s the occasional reading of ‘a former poet laureate’s rendition of an ode about a farting competition’. Then new members of the club are invited to grovel in the sand for several metres, then crawl on hands and knees up a sheep ramp to be tapped on the shoulder by the commodore with a giant blow-up inflatable plastic hammer. And to then be welcomed into the club and given a jar full of bull semen (cream and whiskey) to swallow. After which, there’s the AGM of the Arid Island Yacht Club.
The Rope family sold the island to the NZ Government for $1.8M in 1993. They had much higher offers to sell to overseas celebrities, but wanted it to stay in local, collective ownership. The island is now a DOC reserve. Rakitu at 329ha could become an outer Gulf equivalent to the famous open sanctuary of Tiritiri Mat angi (245ha).
Unusual plants on Rakitu are large-leaved forms of rangiora and kawakawa. Tui, morepork, grey warblers, kingfishers, fantails, silvereyes, shining cuckoos and little blue penguins live on Arid Island, plus introduced pasture birds like paradise shelducks, spur-winged plovers and welcome swallows. Introduced wekas also seem happy to be there.
Many other species have disappeared, but could be returned: whiteheads, kakariki and tomtit, pied shags, bellbirds and pipits. But the sheep, cows and the bulls are long gone. And won’t be coming back.
