DRIVING CHANGESUSTAINABLE KAIPARA SARAH BRAY AND STEPH GIBSON

Meet the passionate duo behind Sustainable Kaipara, who you’ll likely find digging freshly made compost or with whiteboard markers in hand while planning the next moves for their community organisation.

Founders of Sustainable Kaipara, Sarah Bray and Steph Gibson met in 2018 when a local group called Plastic Free Mangawhai was formed by Kate Matheson. After running volunteer initiatives, and being inspired by the awesome changes made by the Mangawhai community to reduce single use plastics, it was clear that more work was needed to minimise waste and look after the Kaipara district’s beautiful environment. The following year, in 2019, the heart of Sustainable Kaipara began to beat!

Sarah had previously worked on waste minimisation and circular economy projects in Sydney, while Steph had a wealth of experience in building community initiatives. The team applied for a grant under the Ministry for the Environment waste minimisation fund and were successful in obtaining a three year grant for a project called Closing the Loop, as well as a grant to look at ways to deal with organic waste i n Kaipara.

Fast forward four years and the Sustainable Kaipara team has expanded, delivering

innovative and science-based solutions to challenges affecting our landscapes, waterways and biodiversity. Working alongside mana whenua, communities, schools, local business and government they aim to amplify existing initiatives and address gaps with practical solutions that will sustain and regenerate the Kaipara environment for future generations; currently running programmes across building waste, climate change and continuing to run a successful food scrap collection service and community compost in Mangawhai.

Sarah’s passion lies with strategic change

and looking at the systems that are in place. She led the construction waste feasibility study last year and is currently looking at ways to implement the recommendations. Sarah explains, “in the face of escalating environmental challenges, from climate change to biodiversity loss, there's an urgent need for a fundamental shift in how we approach sustainability. While individual actions like recycling or using energyefficient appliances are valuable, they're not enough to address the systemic issues driving environmental degradation. What's needed is a holistic transformation of the systems that underpin our societies.”

8 PROFILE
Sarah Bray Steph Gibson

Steph has always loved growing food and working with people, so it has been a natural fit for her to be leading the community compost project and teaching the community how to compost at home. Steph highlighted that “using our food scraps as a resource to enrich our soils is an absolute no-brainer, and if you can do that at home with zero travel required and compost going back into your own garden, then that’s always going to be best. That’s why I love teaching people how easy it is to set up a home composting or worm farm solution. The joy people get from seeing firsthand the extraordinary transformation of their food scraps into a new and valuable resource is incredible.”

At its core, Sustainable Kaipara is dedicated to working on projects with real world impact that will protect and restore our environment. With integrity as a cornerstone of the organisation, Sarah and Steph have their feet firmly planted in the ground, always looking at ways to have a greater impact on improving our environment.

CRAFTING MASTERPIECES: THE ART AND SKILL BEHIND MORRIS & JAMES POTTERY

In the tranquil landscapes of our local community lies a hidden gem, Morris & James Pottery, a Matakana institution established in 1977.

Thriving under the guidance of over 15 dedicated artisans, the iconic establishment continues to produce colourful treasures that enrich homes and gardens.

At the heart of Morris & James Pottery lies their onsite clay pit, providing the raw material for the vast selection of ceramics, pots, home décor, and gardenware on offer. Within the expansive buildings housing the showroom and pottery factory, these skilled artisans bring clay to life through a blend of traditional techniques and inno vative methods.

The journey of creation begins with the careful blending of the terracotta clay, harvested and stored onsite to ensure quality and consistency. Potters then shape the clay on spinning wheels, employing a unique method of working with extruded clay pipes which enable them to craft larger-scale pots by hand.

After shaping, the pots undergo a meticulous drying process in a controlled environment called the ‘summer room’. This ensures that they dry slowly and evenly, reducing the risk of cracks or warping. Pots are set on beds

of sand, ensuring they maintain their shape as they gradually shrink and dry. It can take up to four weeks for larger pieces to d ry completely.

Once the pieces are bone dry, the pots are fired in kilns, reaching temperatures over 1,000 degrees celsius in a process known as bisque firing. This prepares them for the application of Morris & James customformulated glazes, meticulously applied by hand to imbue each piece with vibrant hues and distinctive character.

10
2/1 MATARIKI STREET, OMAHA 0986 www.nomadandhome.co.nz 09 422 7090 @nomadandhome.nz SPOTLIGHT

The glazing process starts with spray glazing. Using an air gun, the glaze is expertly applied to achieve an even and consistent coverage across the surface of the pot. This method allows for a smoother and more uniform base coat that serves as the foundation for subsequent layers of glaze. Finally, the pots are hand-decorated, adding the finishing touches that elevate them to works of art.

One of the best ways to witness the magic of Morris & James Pottery firsthand is by joining one of their daily factory tours at 11.30am. Here, you’re immersed in the creative process, and learn about the transformation of raw clay into iconic pieces of art. It's a rare opportunity to glimpse behind the scenes of one of the few potteries of this scale in N ew Zealand.

From start to finish, the creation of a Morris & James Pottery piece is a labour of love, guided by a commitment to excellence that spans generations. So, the next time you admire a piece of Morris & James Pottery, take a moment to appreciate the skill and dedication that went into its making - a true testament to the enduring beauty of local handmade craftsmanship.

THE SEAMLESS BLEND OF ARCHITECTURE AND LANDSCAPE

What started as a simple idea resulted in a compelling design fondly referred to as the Dart, a truly remarkable holiday home located at Breamtail Farm, near Mangawhai.

With stunning ocean views to the east and farmland views to the west, this uniquely designed house strategically faces due north, making the most of the sun and the breathtaking setting. For owners Pete and Maria, the seclusion and views the site offers are what initially drew them to the land, making it imperative to create a house that enhanced and encapsulated both.

Hoping to blend their home with the natural landscape they approached John from

Studio John Irving Architects with basic specifications; four bedrooms, flow and function. “I can still recall the meeting where John scribbled the concept in front of my wife and I,"” says Peter, “it was perfect, he’s a genius.”

A simple yet ingenious design in a triangular shape, with its point sitting like a compass marking north, the home settles into the topography of the landscape seamlessly. "We didn't design the form to be clever or

overly sculptural. It was a response to the site," says John. Organic and unobtrusive, the structure is softened by weathered cedar cladding and an intentional lack of garden, instead having grass grow right up to the walls. "It's a house in a paddock with no distinction, as if the sheep could wander straight in," explains John.

The master bedroom with ensuite and primely positioned deck occupy the apex of the dart, while the open-plan kitchen, living and dining

sit proudly in the middle section, bookended by a large fireplace and the kitchen's expansive raw-concrete island bench. The broadest section houses three additional bedrooms, the main bathroom plus laundry and entry to the home which adopts a clever detail; floating in a metal frame, visitors step up into the entry door, arriving in the house elevated before descending into the living areas where the view reveals itself.

The home captures enchanting views of Hen and Chicken Islands, Sail Rock, as well as both Great and Little Barrier Islands from its eastern vantage point, while to the west, it overlooks pristine native bush near the Brynderwyn Hills. With two robust Hardwood Vitex decks, one either side of the living area, there’s always somewhere to enjoy the views no matter which way the wind is blowing, and if it’s a still day, well the entire open heart of the home is a truly spectacular feature.

Western Red Cedar is present both inside and out, providing further connection with the landscape and offering continuity with cedar panelling gracing the living space, gallery, hallway, and master bedroom. Rich American White Oak flooring creates a sense of expansive openness inside, accentuated by soaring ceilings in the spacious open-plan living area. Seemingly small yet significant details, like the kitchen's black glass splashback subtly mirroring and reflecting back the impressive views, further exemplify the seamless flow that has been created.

An exceptional project, Peter admits it was a complex build with so many different angles and lengths involved. He compliments their builder, Marcus Jones, and his outstanding team for working with John to meticulously craft this distinct design into a reality, saying “we couldn’t be happier with the outcome.” www.StudioJohnIrving.com | 09 337 0737

PAINTING WITH PURPOSE

Meet Bianca and Sam, the duo behind Better House Painters, a bespoke house painting business with a green twist.

Originally from Australia, Sam trained as a house painter in the coastal landscapes and prestigious homes of Northern Beaches, Sydney. However, after more than a decade of honing his craft as a painter, Sam experienced firsthand the harmful impacts of conventional paints.

Heavily reliant on petrochemicals and offgassing toxins, known as Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), these chemicals can cause detrimental health impacts such as headaches, nausea, respiratory irritation and more serious long-term damage. As is the case with many trades, waste and pollution are also a huge problem; paint is responsible for more than half of the microplastic pollution in our oceans. Sam felt there was a better way.

Meanwhile, Bianca, a recent Fine Arts graduate, shared Sam’s passion for environmental sustainability. Together, they embarked on a journey to pursue regenerative farming, and spent years working on organic market gardens, becoming more environmentally engaged and accessing healthy, natural food. Drawn to Matakana's vibrant local food scene and beautiful coastline, they found themselves at the crossroads of pursuing their dream of starting a farm.

In the midst of their sustainable farming aspirations, Bianca and Sam founded Better

House Painters, blending Sam’s expertise in house painting with Bianca’s creative eye and their shared commitment to health and environmental wellbeing. Their specialist painting service prioritises natural paints, composed of naturally occurring, organic and non-toxic ingredients and free from harmful chemicals and VOCs.

Natural paints, while boasting an industry leading 25-year interior guarantee, require craftsmanship, a meticulous approach and high attention to detail. “With the right application these paints can subtly finish a room or achieve commanding textural complexity,” explains Bianca. The couple's commitment to environmental responsibility extends beyond paint selection, utilising industry leading tools that reduce dust and other toxic materials on worksites, and employing responsible clean-up practices to protect our waterways.

Described as friendly, detailed, and precise, with a worksite that's organised, clean, and respectful, Sam and Bianca are on a mission to offer the Rodney region better house painting options. Better House Painters is an excellent choice for those invested in health and wellbeing, and those looking for environmentally sustainable options in t he trad es.

Local cabinetmaker, Neil Taylor, has a wealth of knowledge and years of experience behind him; becoming interested in woodwork at a young age in his granddad’s shed, Neil went on to graduate as an award-winning apprentice and opened Neil Taylor Cabinetmaker & Design (NTCD) in 2011.

What advice would you give someone designing a new kitchen or beginning a kitchen renovation?

Preparation is key. Do your research on the overall look and style you’re after. A kitchen is the centre of a home so it’s always best to be clear on the end result you’re aiming to achieve from the very beginning.

There are so many elements involved that come together to create kitchens, researching and understanding each of these is helpful. Having your appliances sorted early in the project means cabinetry can be designed around their dimensions, fitting them into your kitchen design seamlessly.

Particularly for renovations, consider the things you like about the way your existing kitchen operates or functions and things that simply don’t work for you. Layout can often take second place to decor but deserves a lot of consideration.

Tell us about the current kitchen design trends that you’re seeing.

We are finding a lot of clients are opting for integrated appliances, favouring the clean lines and minimal look this gives. Fluting and textures with soft curves are popular features to create a point of interest in kitchen designs and porcelain benchtops are becoming more requested now for their sleek finish.

How do you ensure longevity and timelessness in your kitchen designs?

Simplicity is always the best approach to a kitchen design that will stand the test of time. Natural products and shakerstyle cabinets are timeless features. If you’re opting for a more modern style, think about injecting it subtly via elements such as backsplashes and handles that are more easily updated in the future.

TRANSFORMING INTERIORS WITH LUXE LINENS

Enjoying a few gins on Omaha Beach as the sun dipped low on the horizon, was the laid-back setting that Sharon Elsmore, the mastermind behind The Linen Trader, found her inspiration.

As the conversation flowed, a friend lamented the struggle of finding natural linen curtains without breaking the bank, from a bespoke supplier and with a quick turnaround. That's when Sharon, fuelled by an entrepreneurial spirit and a knack for design, decided to take matters into her own hands.

Armed with trusted relationships with overseas production teams and a keen eye for style, Sharon dove headfirst into the world of linen. "It took a fair bit of back and forth," she laughs, recalling the early days of sourcing fabrics and perfecting designs. But her determination paid off, and soon The Linen Trader was born.

Sharon's love for interior design and eye for quality homewares has helped create a business where quality and customisation are key. Not content with offering just linen curtains, Sharon designed a range of bespoke slipcovers and valances, each piece crafted with care and attention to detail. The bedhead slipcovers, in particular, have become a hit among clients for their versatility and easy maintenance, tailored to any size and machine washable.

Drawing inspiration from her travels and home renovations experience, Sharon has curated a linen collection that seamlessly blends coastal charm with urban sophistication. Muted colour tones, earthy hues, soft greys, calming blues, and delicate whites dominate the palette, lending a serene yet luxurious vibe to any space. "Curtains should enhance a room," Sharon explains, "and can easily bring together the aesthetic of a space when done well."

But The Linen Trader isn't just about stylish interiors - it's about delivering a personalised experience from start to finish. Thanks to Sharon's long-standing supplier relationships, clients can expect competitive pricing and swift turnaround times. And as for the future? "What started as a side hustle will hopefully grow into my main hustle," she muses. "Watch this space."

While Sharon currently calls Auckland home, she is no stranger to the Matakana area, visiting often and setting her sights on moving permanently in the near future. Whether you’re revamping a beachside retreat or adding a touch of coastal chic to your urban abode, The Linen Trader has you covered.

THE BUILDERS CABIN

Discover the inspiring journey of realising a family's holiday home dream in the picturesque landscapes of Mangawhai. A masterful transformation of their initial plans culminating in the coupling of two transportable pods to create their ideal haven, all while blending functionality, style and affordability.

After purchasing a 2,000 square-metre section in 2016, this Auckland-based family deliberated extensively on the vision for their dream holiday home. Originally planning for an architecturally designed four-bedroom, four-ensuite home with a pool, they reconsidered as construction costs surged. Opting instead to retain the essence of the architect's plans while adjusting the scope, they settled on a two-bedroom, two-bathroom layout with a pool.

With their eldest son obtaining his builder's licence, the family seized the opportunity to engage his expertise. They conceived an idea of cabins to provide accommodation during the construction phase. Transportable pods, comprising two-bedrooms, two-bathrooms, and living spaces, were delivered on trailers by Eziliv. With a qualified builder and two interior designers within the family, they embarked on transforming this mobile shell into what they have affectionately called The Builders Cabin.

Utilising a Bunnings kitset kitchen and employing a considerable amount of DIY effort, the whole family

dedicated numerous weekends to the project in an effort to help manage costs. They undertook tasks such as tiling bathrooms, crafting benchtops, laying flooring, constructing decks and pergolas, and sewing curtains to establish a luxurious base for themselves and their builders. While some finishing touches remain, The Builders Cabin is now fully operational, poised for their son and his team to commence work on the main dwelling.

Upon the project's completion, their dream of a four-bedroom, four-bathroom home will materialise, only now divided between two dwellings. These structures will be seamlessly connected by a landscaped boardwalk and native planting, reflecting their meticulous planning and dedication to their vision.

BRICK BAY FOLLY WINNER FEMME-LY VELUES: A VIBRANT CELEBRATION OF WOMEN IN DESIGN

A bright and brilliant new ‘folly’ at Brick Bay has added a splash of colour to the sculpture trail’s winter landscape.

Titled Femme-ly Velues , the folly was designed and built by young architects Claire Ford, Elise Cautley and Jennifer Gao who won the annual Brick Bay Folly competition, now in its 9th year.

As the title suggests, Femme-ly Velues is an expression of both femininity and feminism. Playing on the traditional term ‘famil y values’, the design is a celebration of the growing presence of women in architecture and construction. Fittingly, this is the first allwomen team to win the competition.

Architectural follies are generally understood to sit somewhere between architecture and sculpture, and the competition is aimed at students or young graduates of architecture, challenging the winning team to transform their design into a reality.

Responding to the competition brief, the team members - now working in professional practices in Auckland and Wellingtonbegan with an idea to explore ornamentation and its role within architectural history. The designers were inspired by skills they were taught by their mothers, and in both the initial proposal and finished folly, there is an allusion to the fabric crafts of sewing a nd weaving.

The folly’s form emerged organically from an afternoon of conversation and sketching to become three ‘bodies in space.’

As the design evolved, so did its complexity, mimicking the accumulation of layers within a woven piece. Ford explains: “First, the warp of the loom (vertical elements) is established, then the weft is run through, with horizontal lines running back and forth. Finally, when the elements are tensioned and compacted into a final piece, it becomes known as ‘the work’.”

32 LIFESTYLE
New builds - Renovations - Home upgrades info@boardandbatten.co.nz (09) 422 7891

The challenge then was how to translate ‘the work’ into an architectural structure. After a period of design experimentation, consultation with project mentors and careful refinement of the construction details, the finished folly is a brightly coloured combination of woven canvas and latticed timber, described by the team as ‘a small family of looms.’ Utilising 272 linear met res of timber and 9 square metres of canvas, the folly expresses a gentle and joyful mood. The timber at the base recycled approximately 30% of the timber from the previous folly built on this site (The Nest), honouring the history and character of ancestral follies at Brick Bay.

Just as textile-based projects utilise the intricacy of small parts to build the finished piece, Femme-ly Velues demonstrates a clever balance between the matrix of subtle construction details and seemingly effortless conceptual experimentation. The vibrancy of colour is a celebration of feminism but also playfulness, joy, and, in the true nature of a folly, a sense of humour and whimsy. Femme-ly Velues can be experienced by all visitors to the Brick Bay Sc ulpture Tra il, open 7 days a week. www.BrickBay.co.nz | 09 425 4690

LAYERS OF EMOTION

Growing up in Melbourne, Tracey Coakley's journey with art began in her childhood. Her passion for creating never waned, and in 2000, after returning from travelling and living overseas, she embarked on an art folio course. It was here that she discovered her love for oils and has been painting in this medium ever since.

As a mature student, Tracey completed a Diploma of Visual Arts at CAE in Melbourne, majoring in painting. The following year she followed her heart and made the move to Auckland to be with her now husband, who hails from New Zealand. The family's journey led them to Waipu in early 2022, drawn by the opportunity to purchase land and her husband’s involvement in establishing Waipu Botanicals where he is the farm manager. Tracey and her family of five currently reside in a tiny home, awaiting the construction of their permanent dwelling on their new land.

Recently, Tracey showcased her artwork in a duo exhibition titled Touch of the Wild at the Mangawhai Artists Gallery. Her inspiration stemmed from observing her children navigate the complexities of developing their identities and finding their place in the world - watching them wrestle with staying true to themselves while also feeling that pull to fit in. The series Fal ling Girl delves into the tumultuous journey of being a teenager and falling into an abyss of the unknown. Stepping into the second gallery of the exhibition, visitors were greeted

with paintings of children’s heads donning furry animal hoods. While dark and moody, they portrayed a sense of humour as they appear to be floating heads against the bla ck backgrounds.

AUTHENTIC NAPOLITAN PIZZA UNDER THE PERGOLA

Bringing a piece of Italy to Mangawhai, Napoli-born-and-raised Donato Terra Gallo believes his purpose in life is to save people from indecent food exposure.

His father was a fisherman and his mother a market gardener, so Donato understood good produce and how to eat it from an early age. After many years in the kitchens of the famous Amalfi Coast perfecting pizza, pasta and fish dishes, he’s spent the last three years sharing his experience at TerraGallo, a unique and interactive dining experience hosted at his family home.

Nestled at the foot of the Brynderwyn Range, TerraGallo provides a beautiful setting with expansive views over a picturesque valley. An outdoor experience that plays out under a large pergola, perfectly positioned to capture the afternoon sun, Donato hosts private groups by booking only, creating an intimate atmosphere where people can be themselves. Comfortably furnished and warmed by the wood-fired oven, Donato loves to banter with his guests in a relaxed and friendly environment.

Hailing from ‘the home of pizza’ means it’s the hero dish of the experience as Donato does what he does best, shares his love of food, pizza and Italy while giving guests the opportunity to get hands-on. Bringing his passionate, gregarious nature and inherent Italian culture, Donato keeps the atmosphere lively while the dining remains simple and fresh with few ingredients. He genuinely

Guests are welcomed with an aperitivo and nibbles which can be enjoyed while they’re viewing or participating in the pizza making. While his Margherita can’t be beaten, a crowd favourite is his broccoli puree with sausage, sourced from the local Mangawhai Butcher. Another highlight is his Mediterraneo, which includes prosciutto crudo, rucola, scaglie di parmigiano and stracciatella, all sourced, along with his mozzarella, from friend, Massimo De Caro who produces amazing Southern Italian cheeses with his business, Il Casaro. Pizzas continue to be made until everyone has had their fill; there’s no rush at TerraGallo. The experience is finished with coffee and cake while water and juice is provided along with an ice bin for guests' BYO drinks. For an afternoon of entertainment or to learn how to get the best out of a personal pizza-oven TerraGallo is open for bookings during Spring, Summer a nd Autumn.

SHOP, SAVE, SUPPORT

Introducing The Animal’s Op Shop, where every purchase supports the mission to provide a safe haven for abused and neglected animals. Set up by The Animal Sanctuary, based in Matakana, sales from new and used items benefits the animals in their care and also assist animal rescues nationwide.

What can we expect to find at your new online store?

All kinds of treasures!! New items, as well as quality used items. One wonderful supporter, Matakana Old School, has donated heaps of brand new products which we’ll be selling to raise funds for the animals. Others have donated a range of nice used items, which will be constantly changing. It’ll be like browsing an Op Shop, but from the comfort of your own home - and everything you buy will help animals in desperate need.

How does it work?

People throughout New Zealand can donate quality items, which will be listed on The Animals Op Shop, hosted by Trade Me. That means that instead of a physical Op Shop in one location, buyers from across the country can choose to buy and pick up items near them. All items will be ‘Buy Now’, so you don’t have to compete in an auction or wait for it to end.

How will the online store assist animals in need?

The funds will go to The Animal Sanctuary, as well as shared with other wonderful animal rescues, helping a wide range of abandoned, neglected and abused animals. Animal rescue groups work incredibly hard, but struggle constantly with the massive expenses of saving animals - food, medicine, desexing, vet bills, it all adds up. If you love animals, whether it’s cats, dogs, horses, farm animals, rabbits, guinea pigs, reptiles, birds…shopping at The Animals Op Shop means you’re helping them!

Is there a way community members can be of service or get involved?

Definitely! To keep our virtual ‘shelves’ full, we need quality items to be continually donated. So the next time you’re having a clean out or redecorating, or you get a gift that just isn’t your cup of tea, or you have excess stock in your shop, please think of letting us list your items on The Animals Op Shop. Simply go to The Animal Sanctuary website, and fill out the form to donate an item.

Tell us about the work you do at The Animal Sanctuary. The Animal Sanctuary rescues, rehabilitates and rehomes abused and neglected animals, as well as injured or orphaned native birds. In order to reach more animals in need, we’ve been busy setting up a number of community and outreach programmes, assisting other animal rescue groups, and establishing new sanctuaries in other locations. The Animals Op Shop is one way to help ease the financial burden animal rescue services constantly face.

BRINGING DESERT FLARE TO KIWI SHORES

Based out of her home studio in Maungaturoto, Vivian is combining her passion for Western and Americana style with her love of fashion, art and photography to share a unique aesthetic with fellow Kiwis via lifestyle brand, Desert Fiend.

Tracing back to Vivian's extensive travels through the Southwestern states of the USA during her formative years; upon returning home to New Zealand, she noticed a lack of accessibility for the Western and Americana aesthetic that had captivated her while abroad. “Desert Fiend was a way I felt I could share and connect with likeminded people in Aotearoa," says Vivian.

More than just a brand, Desert Fiend is a way of life. It embodies a nostalgia for a bygone era, drawing inspiration from Western films, classic rock music, timeless style and a longing for the freedom of the open road. The brand aims to encapsulate an attitude - a small act of everyday rebellion - inspiring others to live their life through a different lens.

Think truck stops and turntables, Coca-Cola and classic cars, snakeskin and Slim Aarons, Led Zeppelin and leather, dirt roads and Dolly Parton - “The Desert Fiend is one who creates the kind of world they want to experience,” explains Vivian.

Meticulously curating second hand products from across New Zealand and online, Vivian believes there is an abundance of amazing clothing out there just waiting for a new home and new lease on life. Convinced fast fashion is a detriment to the environment with its creation of unnecessary waste, Vivian hopes to encourage others to discover their personal style through the history and richness of pre-loved pieces that can’t be replicated with today's manufacturing.

“Whether it’s a patch on the knee of a well-loved pair of jeans or an old ticket stub in a jacket pocket, there is always a story to be told.”

Her strong creative flare and deep love for visual arts, primarily photography, for which she has won awards, has also been incorporated into the Desert Fiend offering through original photographic prints from her time abroad that encapsulate the lifestyle the brand exudes.

View the Desert Fiend range online and look out for Vivian at local markets selling her unique Western Americana wares in person and remember ‘fashion comes and goes but style is forever’.

FROSTY AND FLAWLESS

As the seasons change, so do your skin care needs. We asked the experts at Avryl Kinnon Aesthetics, specialising in injectables, laser and beauty treatments at a serene sanctuary in the heart of Warkworth, to share their beauty tips and picks for winter.

Silk sleepwear

Elevate your beauty sleep with a pure mulberry silk range. Sleeping on silk minimises skin friction, prevents premature ageing and leaves hair cuticles smoother. Silk’s natural temperature regulation ensures a refreshing slumber wherever your dreams take you.

Beauty Pick:

Avryl Kinnon Aesthetics Sleep Range

Hydrate inside and out

When the weather turns rainy and grey it’s easy to switch on the heat pump, which sucks the moisture out of your skin; drinking water will keep your insides hydrated, and adding a hydrating serum to your skincare routine will keep your epidermis supple and plump.

Beauty Picks:

Medik8 HEO Two Step Overnight Mask Medik8 Hydr8 B5 Hyaluronic Serum

SPF all day, every day

Do not be fooled by the lack of sun in the winter seasons, those sneaky UV rays that cause photodamage are around year-long and speed up ageing. Remember, in the daylight, pop on your SPF!

Beauty Pick: TIZO3 Natural SPF Tinted Primer

Lock it in at night

When you sleep your skin cells undergo a meticulous renewal process and collagen production also increases. Using correct skin care will allow your skin to repair and rejuvenate, so you can wake up glowing!

Beauty Picks:

Medik8 Night Ritual Vitamin A Medik8 Sleep Glycolic

Use the cooler temperatures to your advantage and invest in your skin with Cosmetic Nurse, Avryl, and Skin Therapist, Meika, who collectively have 25 years experience in aesthetics. KOWHAI COAST YOUTH TRUST

For over 30 years the Kowhai Coast Youth Trust has been helping local families in need of assistance. With an influx of applications for assistance over the last 12 months, support for the Trust is needed now more than ever.

Formed in 1991, a group of local residents came together to create the Trust after recognising gaps in the system which saw many local youth missing out on opportunities due to a lack of available financial assistance. Acknowledging that most of their funding would be derived from the local community, the Trustees were committed to investing those funds in a localised area, which they decided would extend from Puhoi in the south, to Dome Valley in the north, and coast-to-coast including Leigh and Ka wau Island.

Over the years, the Trust has made hundreds of, mainly small, donations which have empowered young people within the community. With no set criteria for applications, each is based on its individual merits, and the Trust proudly covers all areas of education, health, culture and sport.

Donations have been made toward tuition and training, technology to assist in learning, much needed dental treatment, domestic and

international travel to represent New Zealand, specialist health workshops, school and youth camps, singing and dancing lessons, eyeglasses and a wide range of other fa mily support.

In recent times, mental health issues have been an increasing issue with many children impacted by neurobehavioural and learning disorders. While the health and educational systems cater for those who are diagnosed, families are forced to fund any psychological or occupational therapist assessments to ascertain the diagnosis. There is a long waiting list and, for many families, it is beyond their resources. The Trust has seen an increasing number of applications for t his service.

The Trust works closely with Homebuilders Family Support Services and most of the grants are distributed confidentially. Trust chair, Ken Bogue, notes that much of the Trust’s work flies under the radar because of the sensitive nature of family’s situations,

meaning it often goes unnoticed by the wider community. A significant 150% increase in applications for assistance in the last 12 months has demonstrated that there is a real need in the space which the Trust operates.

Historically the Trust has relied on the support of local community groups and a small number of local philanthropists for providing funds for their work; however with increasing demand, they have recently launched a new website hoping to attract a wider range of sponsors so it can continue its work. Four new Trustees were also appointed, two of these being secondgeneration Trustees, which indicates the group's intention to continue to contribute to the local community in the years ahead.

If anyone is aware of any family that needs assistance, or anyone who would like to become a sponsor, visit the website and follow the Apply or Donate buttons. www.KCYT.org.nz | info@KCYT.org.nz
