ROSÉ CRAFTED CAKES WORDS

Visit the Matakana Village Farmers’ Market and you can’t help but notice the buzz around the newest stall in town. Small children gaze wide-eyed at rows of delicate cupcakes neatly laid out on the macrocarpa counter. Clouds of vanilla, chocolate or strawberry frosting are freckled with tiny golden stars, embellished with a jaunty square of Honest Chocolat, or most popular of all, adorned with a hand painted, golden unicorn horn. Rosé Crafted Cakes is the creation of Zarnya Bordoloi, who specialises in beautiful, premium quality handcrafted cakes. Her gorgeous creations are all dairy-free and egg-free and can be glutenfree too. Zarnya is a self-taught cake crafter who came to the business the old-fashioned way. After years of baking beautiful, high quality birthday cakes for her four sons, friends began asking her to do the same for weddings and special

occasions. “I love crafting beautiful things and the creativity of cake making gives me such a sense of accomplishment,” she says. “I’m a bit of a perfectionist.” She launched the business in June 2017, shortly after she, husband Neil and their children returned from living in Australia. With their youngest child starting preschool, Zarnya decided she needed something to do. "I mapped out a business plan, set up a Facebook page and received a cake order that weekend. I have not had a free weekend since.” Word of her stunning creations and attention to detail soon spread and within a few months, Zarnya was handcrafting up to 400 designer cupcakes for corporate events, including the launches of new Augustine fashion stores. “People ask how I’ve achieved that so quickly, but I just picked up the phone and asked. When I think about what I want, I don’t worry about the

problems. I just focus on the outcome.” The family moved to Point Wells in June 2018, just as a stall became available at the Matakana Village Farmers’ Market. “I love being able to use local ingredients in my creations, like chocolate from Honest Chocolat, coffee from Matakana Coffee Roasters and beautiful flowers from Whangateau Roses,” says Zarnya. “As the seasons change I’m looking forward to bringing in local berries too.” Zarnya has future plans for a cake shop in Matakana, offering on-the-day cake orders and delivery. She’s always on the lookout for local suppliers keen to collaborate and is currently searching for a pink champagne for a future cupcake creation. Not rosé? “I chose my brand name because I love rose gold - but I do enjoy a glass of local rosé too.” zarnya@rccakes.co.nz www.rccakes.co.nz
