Rescue dogs

Filmed

at the Country Retreat Animal Sanctuary near Warkworth, a new series aimed at pairing

unwanted dogs with new owners starts this month and it’s feel-good fun for all the family.

Words Emily Pattullo

From out of the gloom of TV tedium emerges a ray of hope for some lucky animals – and viewers. A reality show called 'The Dog House' that highlights the on-going issue of unwanted pets – especially post-covid – but concludes with a happy ending matching a fortunate few with lucky new owners.

Having proved a huge hit both in the UK and Australia, a New Zealand version of 'The Dog House' is coming to TVNZ. Sticking faithfully to the tried and tested formula, it is set in a dog rescue centre (in this case Country Retreat and Animal Sanctuary) where hopeful new owners prepare to meet the dog of their dreams. According to Helen who runs the sanctuary, it’s rarely the dog they think they’re going to get, “They come in with one thing in mind and usually go home with something totally different.”

But it’s not as simple as them liking the look of each other and job done, it’s a stringent

process overseen by Helen who has been pairing pups with people for many years. “It’s not a case of someone coming in and ordering the exact dog they want and me handing it over and taking the money, it’s a huge process and I do my research. New owners don’t realise they are the ones being interviewed. Body language and how they interact with the animals plays a big part,” she says.

Rescuing dogs has become Helen’s life over the past 10 years when they first brought the property which was then only a kennels. She, and her partner Gavin, had always wanted to run a rescue centre which they started out of their garage soon after. Now it’s a wellestablished, much-needed refuge not only for dogs but people too. “Everyone that works here is a volunteer, they do it for love, and they all feature in the show.”

One lucky couple from Waikato, who star in

the second episode aired on 23 February, went home with a dog they never imagined owning. Heidi and Steve recall wanting a small dog initially, but as owners of rescue rabbits, it was suggested by Helen that a small dog wouldn’t be suitable. Helen says she knew instantly which dog was for them, a puppy called Elizabeth (Bee), and Heidi agrees, “When that big tumble of excitement came in we fell in love with her.”

“You can see from our reactions that a Shar Pei never crossed our minds,” says Steve. “I can’t imagine us being with any other kind of dog now.”

The couple had always wanted a dog together, to give it a forever home in a stable environment. In fact, they were so happy with Bee that they adopted another Shar Pei sister for her as company.

Although she was very apprehensive about

doing 'The Dog House', Helen says she did it for the animals. “It’s been a great platform to highlight the amount of work and commitment that goes into re-homing dogs. The show’s organisers and crew have been brilliant, they really listened to my advice,” says Helen. During this interview, Helen received a picture of a litter of puppies and a plea for her to home them, “I would take them all if I could but often I just can’t,” she says, clearly upset. And with good reason: by turning them away she knew it would mean “they would have to be destroyed. If dogs don’t get adopted there is no room for more who need rescuing and so it goes on.”

The sanctuary has been inundated with dogs since Covid, “It’s been a huge problem for us, everyone getting puppies during lockdown and then going back to work and realising they can’t keep the dogs anymore. Or they haven’t known to neuter them and suddenly there’s a litter of puppies they can’t lo ok after.”

Steve and Heidi are huge advocates for adopting and can’t recommend it enough, “Having Bee come into my life has really helped my mental health with not working,” says Steve. “People get healed by animals, give dogs a chance.”

Understanding Relationship Property.

CRAFTED LEGAL ADVICE FOR PEACE OF MIND.

The protection of assets that we have all worked so hard to acquire is an important consideration for most people.

Income, property, Kiwisaver, intermingled inheritances and gifts from third parties are all considered relationship property when in a de facto relationship — unless both parties have entered into a Contracting Out Agreement. Without one, relationship property would be shared equally upon separation, or even the death of one party, regardless of what anyone’s will said. Know when your relationship is considered a de facto relationship under New Zealand legislation and protect your assets with a Contracting Out Agreement. The expedition was run by Antarctic Heritage Trust. Their goal is to inspire a new generation of explorers who understand the legacy of Antarctica’s heroic-era explorers, and are motivated to protect the explorer bases and artefacts left behind over a century ago.

“I saw the Inspiring Explorers expedition in 2017 on social media, when they crossed Greenland, and I was absolutely hooked,’ says Laura. ‘I thought, I really want to be that person. I applied for a couple and wasn't successful, and this was the next big one. It was bigger than anything I'd done before and would really push me, so I threw myself into the application.”

That application was successful, and Laura thinks her qualities of strength, positivity, teamwork and medical skills all counted in her favour – Laura is a firefighter and medical first responder for Auckland Airport Emergency Services. She also considers

Pole star

While you were eating your Christmas lunch, 28-yearold Laura Andrews was three-quarters of the way into her 1000-kilometre ski trek to the South Pole, weathering temperatures that averaged minus 25-30°C, and as low as minus 49°C when the wind chill factor was included. That’s extreme even for this remarkable young woman who has hiked the South Island section of Te Araroa and cycled the length of Aotearoa New Zealand.

her strong sense of heritage, developed while growing up in Waipu, to have been an advantage. “My family is descended from immigrants who came on the Margaret in the 1850s. We spent a long time learning about our history, and I really related when it came to the resilience and bravery of the early explorers of Antarctica.”

Merely surviving this trip is a testament to Laura’s physical and mental fortitude. “Humans aren’t made to survive in Antarctica, it's a really hostile environment. Cuts and injuries don't heal, and your body starts to slowly break down from the day you start. After 50 days, you really feel it.”

However, none of that outweighed the upside of the adventure, and Laura’s enthusiastic retelling of the highlights is infectious, “Physically it was amazing but, emotionally, working in a team like that was incredible. We were really positive and kind of had a good day every day,” she laughs. “When I arrived,

I was scared of two things – frostbite and being the weakest link. Both of those things happened, but the frostbite was superficial and has already healed, and the days when I was the weakest link, I was supported by a strong team.” On suggesting she returned the favour when others were struggling, she replies, “Yeah, exactly. You carry them when they have a tough day and it’s amazing to be part of a group like that.”

What of the magical moments in an extreme environment like Antarctica? “The first time it snowed,” says Laura, wistfully, “they were the most perfect little snowflakes and, because it was so cold, they didn't melt to each other and they didn't melt on us. It was magical and beautiful, and I cried. Down there, you're such a pure form of yourself and emotions run high. The sun would be shining on my amazing team who were inspiring me, and I was aware of being so far away from everything in this most beautiful part of the world. I was almost euphoric about where I was and what I was doing.”

Her travel diary mentions ‘sun dogs’; Laura explains: ‘A sun dog is a false sun that

10
Words Luke Williamson

appears on the horizon at the cardinal points and they look like rainbow suns. As we got towards the last degree, we got sun dogs almost every day. It looks like heaven,’ she says. “There was a glowing light that was so beautiful. I turned around and saw my team mates walking out of it and it looked like the most heroic thing you’ve ever seen.”

The euphoria is still apparent as Laura describes her experiences, but the return home has been jarring, “Re-immersion back

into the world was really hard. It was very noisy and pretty overwhelming.”

For someone with this sort of inquisitiveness and lust-for-life, what could the next goal possibly be? “The North Pole!” says Laura, without hesitation. “It’s also very cold, but the ice is moving on the ocean. You have to develop sea-legs and jump between icebergs, and there’s polar bears, so there are a few more hazards to deal with. I’d like to build up my skill set enough that I could

be a leader and take some other Inspiring Explorers candidates, and share the love! I’ve had an amazing gift being part of the South Pole expedition and I want to make the most of that.”

If you feel the spirit of adventure stirring in you, check out the amazing Antarctic Heritage Trust website and consider their next Inspiring Explorers expedition.

Un-poppable

Bubbles are just a small part of what inspires local artist and designer, Ruby Watson, who seamlessly juggles parenting with a varied and ever-evolving career.

Having recently completed a hugely popular pop-up, bubble-themed exhibition and interactive workshop at Charlie’s Gelato to showcase her artwork, Ruby Watson is already ruminating on her next project and it’s likely to be fun! Like the bubbles, which she wanted to inspire delight and playfulness, not just in the children that attended the art therapy session but in the parents who brought them along, enjoyment is a big part of what motivates the artist a nd designer.

But there is also a more thoughtful and serious side to the bubbles and what they mean to Ruby, “They represent motherhood and the tension we live in,” she says. “They are forever morphing as they move, changing colour and shape. But they are also delicate.” As a mother of two young children, juggling a career and running a home is a fine balance, one that from the outside can appear seamless, and to some even awe-inspiring; but as Ruby wanted to show through her bubble paintings can, from a distance, appear perfect, until “you get closer and can actually see that they are made up of m essy layers.”

Having studied architecture, Ruby realised she preferred the more hands-on design and spatial side of things rather than computers and detailing, which has led her to collaborating with the likes of fashion designer Brooke Tyson on fabric designs for her fashion range, as well as designing Frankie Apothecary’s packaging and labels, I Am Eva’s period-proof range, and creating installations for Auckland Council.

On top of that, Ruby also co-founded ĀKAU – Te Reo Māori for where water meets the land – which “strives to empower whānau and tamariki to shape their future and their community through creativity and design. We make sure the community’s voice is heard from the start to the finish of our projects”.

As dynamic as the bubbles she paints, Ruby is inspired by new and exciting projects and is always open to collaborations and commissions. In the meantime she is designing a new home with her partner, who is a builder, completing other works, and being a mother; all of which just shows how truly un-poppable Ruby is. Ruby will be doing another pop-up at Charlie’s, exhibiting her Pop! bubble art for those who missed it, as well as other pieces, from 10 March-23 April. Over Easter and the school holidays, Leach Studio Ceramics will be in the space too with their Play with Clay. www.instagram.com/RubyWatsonInk www.RubyWatson.com

Super styling

How did you become a stylist/designer?

I studied for a Bachelor of Design in Visual Communications before working as a graphic designer and stylist for Homestyle Magazine for eight years. I then set up my own practice art directing and styling photoshoots for both editorial and homeware brands. This year we are expanding our offering to our clients with the inclusion of social media roll outs and graphic design to work alongside the ima ges created.

Where does your inspiration come from?

My inspiration comes from the everyday, seeing textures and colours while walking in nature or random things that catch my eye and spark an idea. I also read a lot of trend forecasting information from overseas, which looks at what is happening around the world, be it political or environmental, and interprets how we will respond to these changes in terms of trends, colour and style.

Who do you admire, and why?

I admire all the phenomenal women I am surrounded by who I get to call friends, who are carving out world-class creative businesses in a variety of fields – interiors, graphic design, fashion, photography and inspirational podcasts.

Where do you source from?

Sourcing for photoshoots is very time dependent as we work to short deadlines,

and often selection comes down to what will work for the concept along with what is available at the time. I aim to source locally and I try to support a range of businesses as I am very aware how hard retail is at the moment, and product placement in an editorial shoot can mean a lot to smaller NZowned businesses.

Does your own home represent your style?

I would say my style is ever-evolving as I am

exposed to new ideas and fall in love with new colour combos, so my home is a representation of a snapshot in time of what I was inspired by while creating it. I change things around a lot, play with layout and different combinations of things to keep it interesting.

What are five things you would recommend to create a space similar to your design style?

A great colour combo in an edited space, loads of texture, feature artwork, plants, and a mix of old and new.

What are the themes/colours for this year?

So many bold colours coming through that are influenced by a reaction for breaking out after being locked down, but I would say there will be a lot of lilac and nature-inspired palettes.

What are your hopes for the future?

To stay inspired and keep creating spaces and content that I am proud of, to keep pushing the boundaries and be unafraid to be bold even when things are tough.

Where is your favourite place?

It is so cliche, but the beach will be a forever inspiration and place of calm.

The brand was born in the majestic Mangawhai Heads, in the home of Janelle Fenwick, a passionate entrepreneur with a penchant for community building. It’s her dream of bringing self-expression to new heights amongst the thriving skate culture of the local community that opened the door for Switchback. “The skate park is our community meeting place, it's where our kids laugh and grow in confidence, and where parents join them in the halfpipe or at the very least, relive their adrenalineseeking youth. It’s a place where everyone is welcome.”

Now she and her team are on a mission to bring those same vibes to the world. Driven to create a space for individuals to showcase their own stories without sacrificing

Carving a future

Switchback is the home of New Zealandmade, custom skate apparel and homewares. Inspired by their love of skate culture and their beautiful home in Aotearoa, Switchback have crafted a rad range of nostalgic apparel and skate decks, as well as carved a path for people to design their own.

on quality, Switchback has sourced their products with sustainability and durability in mind so that you can ride care-free – the way it should be.

“It's no secret that the skate community has proudly pushed the boundaries of what's possible, and what could be more rebellious than putting the power in your hands to create your own skate-wear that tells your story the way you've always wanted to?” says Janelle. From 90s-inspired, oversized tees to custom-wrapped maple decks that are ready to ride (or display), they really have something for every skater, no matter what age or level of adrenaline.

With creatives tucked away in every corner of the skate world, Switchback has taken

the opportunity to capture that artistry and energy in their pre-curated collection which features work from local artists such as Moana Wave Company who share their passion for storytelling, as well as their mission to create something that’s more than just a piece of clothing. Their products are made to be worn, and they’re designed to last even the most adventurous of rides.

But it's not just about bringing the community into the artistry, Switchback also puts them at the centre through events to support charitable organisations, in particular those who champion mental health such as I AM HOPE.

Material world

Lucy Smith took up sewing her own clothes when she inherited her Nana Joan’s sewing machine. These days she operates an online boutique, Joan’s Fine Fabric, specialising in natural-fibre dressmaking fabrics.

In recent years there has been a resurgence in sewing with the emergence of a new generation of independent sewing pattern and fabric designers. New sewists can browse patterns from home, have all their supplies delivered and follow a sew-along video tutorial to create their own garments. Experienced sewists who put down the tools years ago are discovering they can buy high-quality fabric and patterns ag ain locally.

The covid pandemic gave the sewing revival the final push it needed with many pulling the sewing machine out of the cupboard and whipping up some loungewear during those long days at home. At the end of 2021, Lucy opened the online doors of Joan’s Fine

Fabric after struggling to access the fabric, prints and designs during lockdown that were only available overseas.

At her home in Waipu, Northland, Lucy’s workroom is bursting with colour, print and texture from European Laundered Linens to the cult favourite Liberty Tana Lawn (TM) . The much-desired and hard-to-get Merchant & Mills linens are the most popular. The soft and crinkle-free cloth is made from dyed flax yarn woven by specialist mills, and tumbled to create the signature finish in striped, gingham, checked and solid colours. Pattern lovers will be delighted by the Fabric Godmother offerings with vintage prints brought back to life on luxurious viscose and cotton fabrics.

Lucy showcases a range of sewing pattern designers at Joan’s, offering both traditional paper patterns and the newer downloadable PDF format along with a convenient large-format printing service. “You might be surprised to learn that we have a number of local sewing pattern designers,” she says. “Papercut Patterns is a well-known business based in Nelson with beautiful designs for experienced sewists. Paper Theory is also really popular, and their most famous design, the Zadie jumpsuit, is a great one for advanced beginners.”

Powered by nature

Sail GP Technologies, known for its fastpaced F50 global yacht racing circuit, was going through a rebranding and preparing to launch into other areas outside of marine; encompassing sea, land and space. They needed someone who had experience and knowledge to help, and so contacted Interior Architect, Amy Dinniss.

Having spent over 20 years working in the marine industry as a boat and superyacht interior designer, it came naturally to Amy to be in that realm, only this time land based. “I’ve had some time out with some big health and life changes, so this was a really exciting project to dive into,” says Amy. “The project is designing by the seat of my pants, we had a lot to achieve within a tight time frame and keeping costs down as much as possible –then throw a pandemic into the mix.”

Situated in Warkworth, the building being renovated was previously a printing works, was purchased by Larry Ellison, the owner of Oracle, around 2007. Once a highly secretive space, having produced and housed some of the best leading-edge technology that has won America's Cups, it is now embracing those from all walks of life, industries, and attracting the attention of a bigger market.

The company ethos is firmly based on creating and utilising leading-edge technology, integrating sustainability and repurposing materials wherever possible. Amy was mindful of material choices that wove the company's brand into her design decisions. Sourcing materials during a pandemic meant that availability became

the deciding factor. “You have a vision as a designer, then there’s the realities of making that happen.”

Now it is an interactive space with rows of touch screens that can walk the user through company history, current technology and offerings, and future visions. Suspended above is one of the F50 Wings, repurposed from a broken Spanish boat. Feature timber wall panelling is locally-sourced NZ sustainable pine, which has been used to create visual interest and also functions as desk surrounds, so existing furniture could be reused.

A beautiful feature of the interior spaces is the large-scale moss walls and living screens. Weaving the powered by nature concept through the walls has softly landscaped the spaces. There is a large polished carbon foil that offers a seat for visitors. The wall behind

has the company’s ’Node’ logo. The meeting room has a highly-polished carbon fibre table, made onsite. It's a great display of some of what the factory is producing. An old foil was repurposed as a feature suspended light. There's a bespoke cabinet that houses tech equipment, as well as an integrated bar fridge for chilled refreshments. Grass cloth wallpaper is another subtle nod to nature. Wearing many hats during the process in design, procurement, project management, a varied skill set was necessary, “It was a real privilege to work alongside such a dynamic company and a great team of tradespeople,” says Amy.

A dream team

A client’s dream for their forever home and a team of local craftsmen helping to bring that vision to life, produces the perfect balance between design and function. A property to excite the senses.

When Warren and Nicky dreamed of escaping the city lights and building their forever home, they knew two things the minute they walked onto the empty lot, just a leisurely stroll from the Point Wells shoreline: they had found their patch of paradise and it deserved a statement home, a home they had always longed for.

With their vision in mind they enlisted the skills of Noel Martin from Martin Design, DJ Jones & Associates Architects, Peta from Yellow Fox Interior Design, as well as Ty from Everitt Kitchens. Then, alongside

26 LIFESTYLE

Tim Baldwin at the helm to manage the end-to-end project, they achieved a finished product that is a “home that exceeds our expectations”, according to Warren a nd Nicky.

From the street, the house stands out from all the rest with its vertical and horizontal charcoal cedar cladding and black Coloursteel roof. His and Hers garages frame the covered and decked entrance, creating a sense of intrigue as to what lies behind its proud exterior. Bathed in natural sunlight from the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, high,

raked grooved ply ceilings, and numerous skylights, the interior has startling design features made from natural timbers and materials throughout, and is enhanced by the dappled sparkle from the in-ground heated swimming pool outside. With almost every room in the house flowing seamlessly to the multitude of outdoor spaces available, it isn’t long before you’re lured outside. A property journey that has had its challenges through Covid lockdowns, material shortages and even a Tsunami warning; this is a project that Tim and his

team are immensely proud of, while Warren and Nicky keep pinching themselves that they are now in their forever home. “Tim and his team's attention to detail and the quality of the workmanship is apparent everywhere we look. Their help and guidance from vision through to completion has been invaluable to us.”

A reflective process

Sally is a mixed-medium artist and has been involved in various art groups and exhibitions across New Zealand and internationally, most recently in Tauranga and Waihi Beach. Sally has been involved in art as a practising artist and teacher for over 25 years. Her interest in exhibiting her pieces and nurturing her talent grew when on a six-year relocation with her family to Canada, and what started as a way to meet people and endure the long Canadian winters soon grew into a passion.

Sally Thrush is a new resident to the area, relocating from the Bay of Plenty to Snells Beach to be closer to family. After settling in the gorgeous beach suburb she joined Kowhai Arts and Crafts Print, and The Mahurangi Artist Network, working with likeminded people, helping feed her creativity and build her local artist network.

Sally is a member of the Print Council Aotearoa NZ and is a regular exhibitor in their small print exhibition, which travels to galleries throughout the country. Sally’s mediums are paint and print, exploring acrylics, mixed media and collage. Her printmaking revolves around collagraphs, but

32 LIFESTYLE
Ridge The Luxury Accommodation Ridge Luxury Accommodation 271 Lawrence Rd, Mangawhai www.theridgemangawhai.guestybookings.com @theridgemangawhai

she also explores lino cuts and monoprints, often combining these techniques to create beautifully-layered prints. Her painting and mixed-media work is a very organic process; as the painting develops she allows it to evolve and the process becomes intuitive, often leading to the final piece being very different to the initial spark of an idea. Printmaking is a much more structural process, and she finds it a more cognitively focussed medium involving specific learnt techniques and skills. It’s this combination of constant learning and the unknown of the finished pull that continues to draw Sally further into printmaking.

Sally’s work is a “personal reflection of my emotions, character and life experiences. My inspiration is a response to the landscape, items I’ve collected and ideas stored in my vast compilations of sketch books. For me, sketchbooks provide reference, gathering of information, recollections of time, a place to write, draw and experiment without the fear of a blank canvas. The end results combine colours, texture, line and expressive markings that satisfy me personally and invite the viewer in to take a closer look.”

Sally works out of her home studio in Snells Beach where she welcomes visitors on open days or by appointment.

Conscious catering

Passionate about real, good-quality and organic wholefoods and drinks, Nectar Café at Morris and James has recently opened its doors.

Preparing and serving food in-house and from scratch, using local organic produce, where possible, Nectar Café is a small family business run by Satya and Tahnee. Through various health issues surrounding food they ate, the family began experimenting with alternatives. “Not wanting us and our kids to miss out, and with our hospitality backgrounds, we started creating raw, wholesome vegan treats free from gluten, dairy, and refined sugar. The feedback was awesome,” says Satya. “Noticing a want in the Auckland community we started selling mixed raw treat boxes and delivering nearby which was a hit. We also experimented with

34 SAVOUR

savoury food; GF, DF, egg-free, keto etc. With lots of fails and some wins, we were very surprised that some of the food tasted as good, if not better than, its not-so-healthy counterparts, and we are so happy to share this at the café. We also realise that everyone is different so we try to cater to a range of food diversities.”

Nectar sells local organic coffee, Rush, and has a range of cabinet food, salads, buffet hot-food options and a small menu that can be taken away or eaten in the tranquil surroundings, with Morris and James pottery just a step away.

Starting with a small menu but offering a full menu soon, Nectar has specials every week, and is open Wednesday to Friday, 9am-3pm, and Saturday and Sunday, 9am-4pm.

Plans are in motion to get a liquor licence and to be open evenings, as well as to host events in the future.

“We thank everyone for their patience and support while we slowly eased into openi ng fully.

We feel so very lucky to be in such a beautiful spot with such a beautiful community.”

In cider knowledge

Bohemian Cider founders Justin and Cynthia Oliver say cider culture in New Zealand is on the rise, thanks to the increasing number of passionate small producers out there.

A qualified winemaker, Justin brings 25 years of fermenting experience to Bohemian Cider. “We use wild, natural fermentations. This only works if you use organic apples, because the native yeast living on the apple skins has not been killed by the chemicals that are used in conventional orchards. We also ferment our cider with the apple skins and pulp – the way a good red wine is made. This gives our cider way more flavour than conventional fermentation.”

The Bohemian Cidery on Duck Creek Road is also known as the Flavour Lab. “We’re constantly trying out new flavour combinations – chilli, black pepper and persimmon have been on the tasting li st lately.”

Cynthia says the team is also putting the finishing touches on their new tasting room which will be open for special events and by appointment.“It’s themed on an old Apple Packhouse but with velvet and chandeliers thrown in. The tasting room is surrounded by native bush and waterfalls with glow worms.

“Bohemian cider is not your standard fizzy apple water that usually masquerades as cider in New Zealand, we’re making dryerstyle ciders with added flavours from other fruit and botanicals. This style of cider is a great-lower alcohol, lower-carb alternative, which also pairs well with a range of fo od styles.”

Other projects on the go are working with local lifestyle-block owners to get more cider apples planted in the area. “Cider apples are a great option for lifestyle blocks as they are much less work than olives or grapes and there’s the bonus of delicious cider at the end of the day,” says Justin.

Zero-alcohol beverages are the biggest growing segment of the industry at the moment, so Justin is working on zero-alcohol

versions of their core cider range. He’s also planning a Cidermaker’s Reserve which will be certified organic. “It’s crazy but there’s no certified organic cider being made in New Zealand, we want to bring the clean and green back to cider.”

Bohemian Cider is available at local liquor outlets, selected bars and restaurants or have a taste at the Matakana Farmers' Market. www.BohemainCider.co.nz | 021 880 864

The Bream dream

Passionate about the environment and animal health, young farmer Caleb Ellis has big dreams for the Mangawhai farm, and providing beef and lamb to the local community is one of them.

Bream Tail Farm may be familiar to anyone who has walked the incredible ‘Mangawhai Coastal track’, but some may not realise that the walk sits on a 1200-acre coastal beef and lamb farm. More than half of the farm is covered with native bush and the Resident Association runs an effective pest control program as well as investing heavily in new native plantings. Collectively they employ a farmer to manage the farm and were delighted to welcome Caleb Ellis and his family to the community in August 2021.

When Caleb arrived with his two children and heavily pregnant wife, Maddie, it was the beginning of lambing season, and to add to the challenges the country was thrown into a national lockdown. Undeterred, he and Maddie set about their tasks and gradually developed their own ideas on how they saw the farm working.

Like many young farmers, Caleb is passionate about the environment and animal

health. He encourages biodiversity and sustainability to minimise the impact of the industry on the land and environment, whilst at the same time improving animal welfare. He has reduced drenching by introducing ‘self-administered’ Himalayan salt-lick blocks and is investigating making his own fertiliser from seaweed collected from the beach. Additionally, he is progressively replanting the kikuya with regenerative pasture to build better feed for the stock.

Caleb’s dream is to market the property’s beef and lamb to the local community and so at the end of 2022 they did a ‘test run’ to their local community with resounding success, selling lamb, and beef BBQ packs. As they are just starting out they are unable to offer individual cuts but have planned another run for the end of March.

Orders close on Friday 10 March and the product will be delivered at the beginning of April.

Grown with aroha

Subtropical fruits such as pineapple, papaya, and bananas abound on roadside stalls and stock the supermarkets on our neighbouring islands, providing a highlight and taste explosion for those travelling. So why not here, in New Zealand?

After observing the changes the world is going through and understanding how nutritiously dense tropical fruit is, Sara and Andrew from Waipu decided in 2012 to take an educated leap of faith and plant their first grove of banana plants. Ten years later, Aotearoa Grown is home to many subtropical fruits and New Zealand’s first and largest commercially-grown papaya orchard. By focusing on the positives of climate change, such as the increase in both soil and weather temperatures, Sara and Andrew recognised that Waipu is home to many of the same weather attributes and, through trial and error, are learning what grows well in Aotearoa and together are bringing the taste of the tropics to Northland’s future. The fruit is grown sustainably and as naturally as possible by utilising Mother Nature’s immense power to bring the full flavour of the plant to fruition – this means they are “sun-ripened, windkissed, hand-picked and delicious”. Sara explains that they “do not use sprays, and all the fruits are grown with aroha”, which only adds to the juicy goodness. Incorporating the power of syntropic principles in their orchards allows them to grow high-quality crops

the same way they grow in our tropical counter-parts ensuring the fruit taste the way they should, while at the same time improving the soil for future crops.

And why tropical fruits? Sara explains that the nutritional benefits of subtropical fruits “are so good for you”. This is especially true for papaya, which is second to none. The papaya is grown in tunnel houses, is picked at its peak and packed full of vitamins, especially Vitamin C. They also have a low GI, which makes them the perfect fruit for everyone – especially as a first food for babies – and not only are they good for you they taste delicious too. Currently, Aotearoa Grown grows 40 types of bananas, papayas, star fruit, jack fruit, passion fruit and chocolate sapote and works with other like-minded farmers to provide tropical fruit to their customers that they can’t get enough of. As these keen gardeners learn what flourishes in New Zealand, there will be many opportunities to diversify and add to their ever-growing tro pical collection.

To taste these delicious morsels, you need to be quick as they fly off the shelves at the two available markets. The first is the Grey Lynn Farmers' Market, held weekly and located at Grey Lynn Community Centre. The second is the Roving Rural market, which take place monthly at various locations and provide a genuine farmgate-to-table experience. To find them at either market, look for the crowd waiting patiently, and be warned, the early bird gets the fruit as they are known to sell out in 45 minutes. Sara and Andrew both adore seeing familiar faces within the crowds of each market and are humbled by the gracious words and genuine excitement bestowed on them. Long-term, the dream is to produce enough delectable fruit to constantly provide tropical fruit boxes that can be couriered country-wide to ensure that even those in the deep south can enjoy the health benefits and flavours.

Gardening calendar

As the summer winds down and the days shorten spare a thought for the complex interactions that abound in your garden. Above ground the weather, plants, birds, animals, insects and microorganisms all play a part. Below ground is just as important and similar in complexity. Think about a network of living inhabitants from worms to microorganisms, in addition to minerals, humus, plant roots and decaying organic matter. The magic is that it is all linked up with the top half and at the end of the day it pretty much runs on organic matter of one kind or another.

Worms

A garden soil full of earthworms is a good indication of a healthy soil. Nutrition for a worm comes from any kind of organic matter. They are amazing recyclers and will eat anything in or just on top of the soil from dead plant matter, manures and even decomposing remains of dead animals. Worms also feed on organisms, dead or alive, in the soil like nematodes, protozoa, bacteria, fungi and algae. There are different types of worms but the ones you are most likely to see are the surface and upper-surface worms. When a worm eats it pulls soil and organic matter into its gizzard using a muscular action. It has no teeth. The food is ground up in its gizzard and goes into its small intestine before being excreted. They are big eaters and will produce their own weight in worm casts (worm poo) every 24 hours. The casts are full of nutrition and in their search for food they also tunnel extensively which aerates the soil. Feed your worms, they are doing a big job. Lots of surface mulch and rotted animal manure will keep them busy!

Parsnips

Parsnips, although they prefer a colder winter to develop their sweet nutty flavour, can grow well in our area. A relative of carrots, celeriac and parsley, they prefer a loose, open soil to grow in with full sun. Seed is best sown direct to the soil in a shallow trench about one centimetre deep. Parsnips will germinate in soil temperatures between 10°C and 20° C, but they are slow to germinate (up to one month) and need to be kept consistently moist. It is important to use fresh seed as it loses viability quickly. Seed can be sown from September to March. Plant in rows 30cm apart and thin plants to 8 to 10cm apart. They will be ready to harvest in four to five months. Get them in now to catch the colder winter months and enjoy parsnips for spring.

Harvest

March will see the summer garden in its maturity. In addition to aubergines, tomatoes, capsicums, chillies, beans, cucumbers, pumpkins and sweetcorn; basil, dill, parsley, oregano, sage and thyme will all be doing well. Keep the plants watered, mulched and pruned. March is also a month when the summer pests may have built up, so keep an eye out for caterpillars and green vegetable bugs. Squash them if you can!

Fruit/vege of the month: Aubergine

Aubergines or eggplants cross a lot of boundaries, both culinary and geographically. They can be found growing all over the warmer parts of the world. They prefer heat and need a soil temperature above 18 degrees celsius. They will grow best in fertile, well-drained soil with a pH above 6.0. Plant well-developed seedlings after Labour Weekend once the soil is warm. Expect fruit in around 80 days. Prune your plant to keep fruit close to the main branches as they tend to snap. There is a fantastic choice of varieties embracing a range of colours, shapes and sizes. Harvest aubergines when they are firm and shiny.

Mediterranean Roasted Aubergine INGREDIENTS

• 1 large eggplant, sliced into 3/4inch to 1-inch rounds

• Kosher salt

• Extra Virgin Olive Oil

• Seasoning of your choice (za'atar and sumac)

• 1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley

• 1/2 cup pomegranate arils (seeds)

• Toasted pine nuts, a handful

• Tahini

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Sprinkle both sides of eggplant slices with kosher salt and arrange on a large tray lined with paper towels. Leave for 30 minutes to allow the eggplant to ‘sweat’.

2. Pat the eggplant slices dry and brush both sides generously with Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Arrange eggplant slices on a lightly-oiled baking sheet (make sure to space them out well). Roast in heated oven for 20 minutes, turn over using a spatula and roast for another 10 to 15 minutes or until the eggplant turns golden brown.

3. Remove from oven and arrange on a serving platter and sprinkle with seasoning of choice. Drizzle with tahini or serve tahini on the side. Top with fresh parsley, pomegranate arils and toasted pine nuts.

4. Serve as a vegan side dish or as an appetiser/mezze. It's great on top of warm pita or warm crusty bread.

The whare has provided a safe haven in the community where local women can either drop-in for a cup of tea and a chat Monday to Friday, or take part in all the wonderful things that the WCR offers. Staffed by a team of dedicated professionals and volunteers, the primary goal of the WCR (a non-profit organisation) is to improve the lives of women in the local community by providing them with a safe and supportive environment where they can access the resources and services they need to overcome any challenges they are facing.

“We see ourselves as a pillar of support for women at any stage of their journey, whether it’s in crisis or averting crises, or for women who wish to build stability and resilience so that they can flourish,” says Jo Nicholson, Centre Manager of the WCR. “Sometimes, all women need is just a bit of a hand up – not a handout – to refill their tank. Providing a place where they can gather and connect

Empowering women

Although the Women’s Centre Rodney (WCR) was established over 30 years ago, moving to their current location in Morpeth Street in Warkworth allowed the organisation to really grow and improve, and in turn better support women in need; reducing isolation and promoting family wellbeing.

with others is a simple notion but it can work wonders. It’s about supporting them and their families in the best way that we can.”

A wide range of services and programs are on offer at the WCR, including emotional support, counselling, legal advice, support groups, financial assistance, education and training programs, domestic violence support, health and wellness, community connection, personal growth and development.

This year, the WCR has a few new courses on offer. One of them is Women of Worth (WOW) – throughout this program women will discover their unique worth and strengths, and how to use them to their advantage in a lasting way. They will also explore how to make changes and develop a realistic plan that will help build a better life for themselves and their family. Another amazing initiative new to WCR, is the Super Grans program, which is about bringing in people (not

necessarily grandparents) who can share a particular life-skill through one-on-one mentoring and workshops.

To help the WCR continue to operate independently so that they can continue to inform, empower and support all women, the WCR welcomes public support. Ways to do this is to donate, join the WCR (membership is open to all women, of any age, interest or background – all that is required is a monthly contribution), or volunteer. There are always projects that need contributions from volunteers with certain skill sets, whether it be technology, design, business, marketing, legal, media skills or beyond. The WCR is also always looking for warm and friendly women to be ‘volunteer hosts’ at the whare. The role is to welcome women, provide basic information, conversation and perhaps make cups of tea.

The point of healing

Deborah Jane was drawn to acupuncture for her own healing and now wants others to experience the benefits too.

What is acupuncture and how does it work?

Acupuncture uses very thin, sterile needles inserted into specific points on the body to promote circulation and mobilise the body's natural immune and healing response. The practice comes from traditional Chinese Medicine and is just one of the many tools we have in our toolbox. Cupping, moxibustion, herbs, and lifestyle advice can also b e offered.

What does it treat?

While acupuncture is commonly thought of as treating pain from musculoskeletal injuries, it can in fact treat a wide range of illnesses and conditions. Such as the common cold and flu, back pain, knee pain, arthritis, cancer recovery, headaches, migraines, digestive issues, constipation, haemorrhoids, loose bowels, IBS, thyroid issues, irregular and painful periods, menopause, fertility issues, respiratory disorders, allergies, hair loss skin conditions, weight loss, stress, anxiety, a nd depression.

What is the process?

During an acupuncture session, your acupuncturist will choose points to stimulate according to your personal health and wellness needs. As blocked energy begins to flow and your body relaxes, feel-good hormones like endorphins, norepinephrine, and oxytocin (responsible for pain relief, improved mood and feelings of well-being), increased alertness and memory, or deep rest and calm are released.

This activates the nervous, immune, and endocrine systems, restores blood flow and improves circulation, and breaks up stagnant energy so that the body begins to heal itself and re-balance

Does it hurt?

Acupuncture needles are very thin, about the width of a human hair. They are much, much thinner and more gentle than hypodermic needles. Some points may feel a slight pinch, and others feel like nothing at all.

What drew you to acupuncture?

I was frustrated with the treatment options offered in Western Medicine. I didn’t want to take medication to treat the symptoms of my illness for the rest of my life. I wanted to address the root of the problem and see some real change.

How has it helped you?

I used acupuncture for infertility from PCOS and successfully carried three children to term. I also used acupuncture for stress and anxiety. Because I know the benefits and what I can treat, I basically use it f or everything.

Why would you recommend acupuncture as a healing modality?

Acupuncture is not a band-aid or symptom-suppressing pill that merely covers up or manages symptoms.

Locally owned and operated, Omaha Holiday Houses specialises in property management and short-term rental accommodation for Omaha and its surrounds. From booking reservations to property maintenance, OHH provides unparalleled service and results for its holiday home owners and guests.

Is it for everyone?

I would say yes, but perhaps I am biased. I have treated so many people whom I call the walking wounded: not really sick but not well and living their best life either. I have seen a real change in people, when their bodies are rebalanced and their own healing ability is activated, when they are sleeping better and less stressed, and not experiencing chronic pain they go on to have amazing lives.

And finally, you specialise in Cosmetic Acupuncture. What is it and how does it work?

Facial Acupuncture is a specific set of acupuncture points used to naturally enhance and boost the look and health of your skin. It works by causing tiny microtraumas to the skin, which signals the body to send collagen, elastin, and microcirculation to the face to heal, repair, and glow.

Facial acupuncture reduces the surface effects of ageing by triggering a self-repair response in the skin as well as addressing the internal imbalances that contribute to ageing.

Tailor-made travel

World Travellers Milford and Mangawhai (WTM) offers a 24/7 travel agent experience built around the dream holidays and desires of their clients.

Caroline Imrie has been a travel professional since 1986. Travelling is something she loves, but what fulfils her most about her job is making clients’ dreams come true. “It’s incredibly rewarding,” she says. “Many in travel will simply give you a brochure when you are looking to travel somewhere. That’s not how we operate. I work with you to understand your dream trip and what you want to experience, then I will start putting together your dream holiday. It may involve your own boat on the canals in the locks of England, or a cycle trip around the Palace of Versailles; a whisky tour in Scotland, or learning how cigars are made in Cuba. Whatever you want to do, I will create the most amazing trip for you.”

Since Covid arrived in 2020, the world has changed enormously with travel. Flights are

regularly cancelled, causing huge issues for travellers. Caroline offers her clients a 24/7 service which means she can be contacted day or night if this happens (and it does). She will sort your flights for you and get you to where you need to go.

“I’ve just come off a 20-hour work day because of the floods in Auckland and I’ve had 11 people stuck all over the world, with planes here unable to land, and that is where our expertise is priceless. Every single person got new tickets, reissued stop points, and accommodation if needed with transfers, because they were halfway home and could not land in Auckland due to the flooding. All inbound flights were cancelled,” says Caroline. “But we sorted everything – because if you don’t use an agent, you’re on your own.”

Safe in the surf

Saving lives for over three decades, not only is the Omaha Beach Surf Life Saving Club dedicated to making sure beachgoers are safe in and out of the water, the club also plays an integral part in teaching kids invaluable, lifelong skills.

Words Milly Nolan

Anyone visiting Omaha Beach tends to gravitate towards the Surf Club. The iconic black tower is a meeting point for beachgoers, and during the summer months it is where flags indicate a safe area to swim, along with a patrol of lifeguards on careful watch – their primary objective being to prevent drowning incidents and water-rel ated injuries.

On the beach on Sundays, from November to April, in front of the black tower, is an impressive and lively hive of activity with children between the ages of five and 14, all taking part in the club’s Junior Surf Education Program. A training ground for future lifeguards, the program aims to teach the children everything they need to know about water safety. It’s a fun morning at the beach and a whole-family affair; with coaches, volunteers and parents all getting involved in some way, whether it is in the water with the kids, or afterwards cooking or serving the sausage sizzle at the club.

When the kids reach 13 years-of-age, they qualify for ‘Rookie’ status, which means they are eligible to participate in the training required to become real lifeguards. As a Junior Committee Member and also a mother of three kids – who all take part in Surf Life Saving – Rachel Iversen says, “One of the things I love about the club is that it offers kids a sense of belonging, and while the journey to become a lifeguard takes commitment, it’s also so much fun along t he way.”

This year, the number of members at Junior Surf was unprecedented and for the first time ever, membership had to be capped. “The growth of the club has come from the emphasis that has been placed on it being a family-centred, all-inclusive community club where everybody of all ages feels welcomed and included at every level,” says club president, Linda Crisford. “The programis delivered by dedicated coaches, managers, parents and Junior Surf committee members who go out of their way to provide a fun and skill-based program. This was one of the key reasons we were awarded the title of Northern Regions Club Of the Year in 2022. The growth of the Juniors means the club will continue to increase the number of lifeguards we have in the future. Lifeguarding is the absolute focus of the club ensuring everyone is safe on, in and around the water.”

As a non-profit organisation, the club always welcomes donations which are vital for their ongoing operation. If you would like to donate, no matter how small, please visit their website.

NOW OPEN 7 DAYS

Home grown

Trish Allen has seen a big upsurge of interest in becoming a bit more resilient and selfsufficient recently. “It started with covid,” she says. “But now with the cost of living going up so much – especially food prices – there’s so much interest in growing food at home. So we’ve decided to run another permaculture design course in the Matakana area.”

The internationally-recognised course will run over weekends from April to November and be based mostly out of the Matakana Hall and Community Garden, but will also include other venues in the area, including the iconic Rainbow Valley Farm.

“What I love about permaculture is that it’s solutions-based,” Trish says. "With so many ecological problems in the world today, it can be overwhelming. But in permaculture we look at solutions – ways to take care of our

Growing

soil, water and ecosystem to preserve them for future generations.”

Trish has lived in Matakana for over 35 years and has seen many changes. She describes Matakana back in 1987 as “a quiet rural backwater” when she and her late husband Joe Polaischer arrived. Trish and Joe bought 50 acres of run-down farmland up the Matakana Hill, called it Rainbow Valley Farm, and set about turning it into a permaculture paradise. Joe was born in Austria and spent his teenage years in the same village as fellow Austrian, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

“Joe loved New Zealand,” says Trish. “He was passionate about our environment and the importance of preserving it.”

Trish has teamed up with Guenther Andrashko (another Austrian permaculturist)

to teach the course, and they’ll be bringing in other experts for specific subjects. Guenther is a well-known local earth builder and landscaper with more than 25 years’ experience creating unique outdoor environments. He is passionate about supporting others to realise their own permaculture projects and aspirations.

“What makes this course unique is that as well as theory sessions, participants can choose from a range of different practical workshops, which include hands-on experience with earth building, pruning, grafting, mushroom growing, fermentation and more,” Guenther says.
