WATERFRONT

WATERFRONT EXCELLENCE AT BUCKLETON BEACH 44 Buckleton Road, Tawharanui Buckleton Beach is the kind of place that steals a piece of your heart; the relaxed community where kids run safe and free and a bay rich with activity and fishing, it can be all too easy to shrug off the city and simply relax. With many properties being tightly held for generations, it is so rare to have an opportunity to secure in this picturesque bay. Add to the mix a waterfront position and this is like a rare coastal jewel. The interior has been completely revamped and the feeling of the home is light, bright and contemporary. Open plan living embraces both the beach-front and garden decks, allowing you to follow the sun and keep an eye on the water, or simply tuck away with a book. With three bedrooms, the third offering bunks for four, there is plenty of space for extended families and while the garage currently houses a large Sealegs it would just as well double as a break away space for the kids. Approximately one hour from Auckland’s CBD, Buckleton Beach is close enough to pop up for a night away at a moments notice. With all tide boat launching and a very old school relaxed feel, there are too many reasons to list why these properties are so rarely let go. Auction (unless sold prior) 2pm, Wed 5 May 2021 30 Gaunt Street, Auckland

SEED SWAP AND SHARE Warkworth Library has set up seed swap boxes in the library. The idea is for customers to bring unwanted/home-saved or left over bought seeds to add to the library’s collection in exchange for seeds already available. The seed swap was set up about nine months ago and is a very popular addition to the library’s services, and you don’t have to have a library card to use it! Seeds can be brought in to be repacked by the library staff, or in their original packets. Seed packets will then be placed in the special seed swap boxes ready for the library community to use. What is nicer than eating your own homegrown veggies and smelling home grown flowers? 1 Baxter Street, Warkworth, 0910 www.aucklandlibraries.govt.nz

New & Noted CARAVAN CLOTHING & HOME Caravan Clothing & Home has opened its doors in Warkworth, and Manager Sammie says, “We are excited to offer a fresh shopping experience to the people of Warkworth and beyond.” This is the third store for Caravan; the first opened in Kerikeri 2006 and then the Russell store opened in 2017. All offering clothing labels and homewares from around the globe, and also an in-house range of clothing: ‘Caravan Label’. The label was designed in 2002 by Tania Cooper (who just happens to be Sammie’s mother) and has an emphasis on classic easy-towear pieces, and natural fibres. Up until 2016 the Caravan brand was manufactured and designed in New Zealand. While still manufacturing about 10% of the range in New Zealand, Tania now manufactures most of the garments in Bali using a small family factory. The fabrics are also sourced in Bali, along with most of the homewares sourced by Tania, giving the shops a tropical fresh feel. 54 Queen Street, Warkworth www.caravanclothinghome.co

A Global Shift to Hemp Global Hemp NZ was first established in 2018 but due to unexpected events, they have only just officially launched and have now been operating for a month. Founder Racquel Duffy’s experience (or the sheep’s experience) in shearing sheds led her on a mission to provide a sustainable alternative for animal fibres like wool. “During my time as a rouser for some local sheep shearers, something pulled on my heart. I couldn’t help to think of all the animals who are contributing to the current fashion world, and it didn’t seem right to me.” Followed by a realisation of the current environmental situation and how our fashion

choices significantly impact these two issues, she went back home after a day in the sheds and started thinking! “What can I do about this intense feeling to make a difference within the fashion industry,” she says. “To help all the animals that are farmed, some in cruel conditions just to make the human race look good? How can I help restore our Whenua (land) and Moana (ocean), and what is our alternative option?” Her in-depth research led to Hemp! Its healing properties are endless, it can provide us with sustainable alternatives in all categories from clothing to fuel, housing to food. Hemp has the ability to help

restore our world from top to bottom and everything in between. “And yes! All have been scientifically proven,” she says. “Hemp has been used since the beginning of time in fact archaeologists found a remnant of hemp cloth in ancient Mesopotamia (currently Iran and Iraq) which dates back to 8,000 BC. Hemp is also believed to be the oldest example of the human industry.” “You may be thinking, ‘If it’s so amazing what’s the problem?’ Hemp was made illegal because it was guilty by association - the casualty of a war against its identical twin.” While the war on drugs continues, more and more are opening up about the medicinal

side of cannabis, therefore shining a more positive light on cannabis as a whole. This includes Hemp but the stigmatisation is still there, therefore education is very important. At Global Hemp NZ, they have set out on a mission to showcase to the people of Aotearoa the exceptional Hemp products currently available around the world, how they differ from mainstream products, and the amazing companies behind the products who are all making positive changes in their homeland all thanks to Hemp. They currently have available the world’s first waterproof Hemp shoes (made by 8000Kicks), the world’s first Hemp eyewear

(from Hemp Eyewear), world-class women's Hemp apparel (by Hemp Love), with exciting and new products on the horizon. “We are so conscious of the carbon footprint of importing our products that a tree for planting comes with every order. Yes, our team will go and plant a tree for every order!” “Knowledge is power, at Global Hemp NZ,” says Racquel, “and we hope to empower you with valuable knowledge, and at the same time, arm you with products that go hand-inhand with that power!” So you can continue to spread the good news! www.globalhemp.co.nz support@globalhemp.co.nz

Queen's Service Medal for Kaiwaka Chief Fire Officer Words Rebecka Bjelfvenstam Keeling

John Bowmar of Kaiwaka has received the Queen’s Service Medal for services to Fire and Emergency New Zealand and the community. John has been a member of the Kaiwaka Volunteer Fire Brigade since 1977 and served the last 16 years as Chief Fire Officer. “The award is for the whole team – past and present. It’s a reflection of what the whole brigade has done,” John says. “I’ve lived in the same house all my life,” says the Kaiwaka beef farmer. “I guess you can call me a stick in the mud. By being in the same place, everybody knows you – and you know what resources everyone has that you can call on.” John remembers one particular incident in 2010. There was a flash flood in Hakaru, and three people got stuck on the roof of their car. “We tried getting to them with a tractor, but that started washing away too. We couldn’t get help from anywhere else – we were isolated due to the floods. We were really down to our last option to get the people off the roof of that car, the mental strain was pretty high,” he says. “Luckily, we knew of a contractor up the road with a bigger tractor – so we managed to get that out to the people who were stuck, so they could jump into its front loader.” “So, it came down to knowing our area. You

rely on people who’ve been here a long time to build up that rapport with the community.” John says his farming background also comes in handy in rescues. “You have to be a practical person to evaluate and manage the whole situation under pressure. On a farm, you make decisions on life and death almost on a daily basis, so it makes you adaptable. You just get on with whatever comes up,” he says. A supportive family helps too. “Christmas Days, birthdays, whenever the siren goes, I’ve always dropped everything and gone. But everybody has different levels of commitments and that’s ok.” A strong work ethic seems to run in the family. John’s wife and one of their daughters work as couriers, starting at 3.30am and getting home around 6pm. Their other daughter is married, and the family have their own farm. “I’ve got two granddaughters and a grandson. They always want to know what I’m doing with my tractors. I must have about 25 on the farm – some quite unique ones,” says John. Repairing old tractors is John’s passion. He works with tractors from the 1940s up to the 1980s, specialising in Massey Fergusons. “I get immense satisfaction from doing the tractors up - many people don’t work on old stuff anymore. You meet some characters

through it too,” he says. In the past ten years, John has attended 847 callouts across a range of events, and also provided support to neighbouring Mangawhai Volunteer Fire Brigade, including mentoring new officers. “My philosophy is to work to people’s strengths and weaknesses,” he says. “You need to size people up – because you have to rely on them. If somebody is not comfortable with sticky situations, there are always support roles for them. The crew encounter tough situations frequently and they always have a debrief after something has happened. But in between the serious moments, there’s still a lot of hilarity and humour in the brigade. “One time we had to capture an escaped emu, and another time we had urban search and rescue after some people insisted they’d seen a lion at the Kaiwaka Lime Works,” John says. “Another time we had to go up a tree to catch a cat. The owner gave us a bag, but it was open-ended – so the cat went in one end and out the other end!” “We get a good mix of people joining – women and men, young and old. From 16-year-olds to medical specialists. But a sense of humour is a prerequisite”. www.fireandemergency.nz

Timeless Love Words Maddie Long

Being from fifth generation families in the area Donna Hamilton and Terrence Trotter felt as though they had always known each other. “Our earliest memory of each other is being rivals in primary school hockey,” says Donna. Their lives have been intertwined through mutual friends and playing social hockey, but they have officially been a couple since June 2017. Living in Matakana, Terrence is a Dairy Farmer and Donna is the Director of The Warkworth Birthing Centre and an Independent Midwife. Trying to plan a

help built “everything and anything”, from the bar, toilets and dance floor to the structure to hang the floral arrangement in the centre of their Utterly Events’ marquee - “nothing was impossible”. Her brother, Grant made their welcome sign that tied into their theme and stationery, and her sister, Cindy was her right hand woman. Donna even made her own wedding cake! Graham Buchs, Donna’s brother-in-law was their celebrant. They got married on the Hamilton family farm - ‘Hamatana Grange’ down Hamilton Road. “Being a part of a family legacy that has been

passed on for five generations is something that is incredibly special to both Terrence and I. I had always envisioned getting married on the family farm and the view is incredible.” Despite having it on the farm they wanted to keep everything quite formal and elegant - a soft white, vintage theme with hints of blush. The original plan was to be married on 6 March 2021, with 140 guests, but with COVID requiring a Level 3 lockdown on 28 February for seven days, the couple were forced to reschedule. “Our local vendors were incredible and within 24 hours of the lockdown being announced we had the whole wedding replanned.” “For both of us, our arrivals to the ceremony were the highlights.” With the help of Greg Stevenson (the best man) and Skywork Helicopters they managed to surprise Terrence with him and his groomsmen arriving by helicopter. “Once Terrence had flown over us, I then left my hiding spot further down on the farm and arrived via horse and cart (from Matakana Carriages), following the bridesmaids in vintage cars. Having me arrive by horse (Clydesdale) and cart was Terrence's one request for the wedding.” “It was incredible to have such a peaceful arrival and to really have a moment to breathe and take it all in. Terrence said watching me come across the paddocks on the horse and cart was the bit that got him emotional - it was really happening!” They finished off the day with a dance routine they had learned in their lounge via YouTube, and gifting their guests wedding favour pens, engraved with ‘D & T It’s permanent'. www.gregcampbell.photo www.skyworkhelicopters.com www.utterlymarqueehire.co.nz www.matakanacarriages.com www.shonastevenson.co.nz www.facebook.com/ FlowerCreationsByLaChey

Asset protection. Do you need a trust? C RAF T ED LEGAL ADVICE FOR PEACE OF M IN D.

The protection of assets that we have all worked so hard to acquire is an important consideration for most people. Trusts are invaluable asset protection mechanisms, which allow a person to hold property and assets on behalf of another for the good of the beneficiaries. However, not everyone needs a trust, so ensuring other forms of asset structuring including your will and enduring powers of attorney are up to date is important. To Have and to Hold The team at Wildly Madly Deeply has been captivated by how couples have embraced the process of planning a wedding in a pandemic environment. “We feel fortunate to be working in an industry built on love, connectedness and family - the core values that Covid-19 has demanded we stop, breathe in and hold dear."

Floral design and styling are still prominent features in many of their weddings, but they have noticed a shift in style. “Couples are now requesting less greenery and opting instead for more flowers. In contrast to the delicate finish of these bouquets is a trend toward combining fresh florals with dried or preserved blooms and foliage. Texturally, these bouquets are exquisite, while the colour profiles can range from rich and luxurious to delicate and whimsical.” “White-on-white has been a popular aesthetic among our Summer and Autumn brides. Seasonal blooms such as white hydrangeas, white roses and gypsophila combine beautifully, and result in a sophisticated and timeless bouquet. Equally, the romantic combination of soft pinks and peach tones is a popular choice."

While couples adjust to the new order, they have seen a rush to action. Some of their clients are booking weddings with minimal turn-around time, and this has kept them busy! “Our team has had to multiply quickly to keep up with increased demand. We are proud of how we have responded and feel privileged that our clients trust us to take their day and run with it.”

that our clients are eager to forge ahead,

Of course, one aspect of planning a wedding during this time is the notable absence of international guests, a harsh and bittersweet reality that must sit alongside such a special celebration, for now! “We have noticed

Cast’ offering live streaming services, couples

choosing to seize the moment in favour of waiting for an undetermined period and a change to the status quo.”

The team loves the challenge of keeping ahead of the current trend curve; “For us, the creative process is exciting, and weddings present a perfect opportunity to get swept away in this process.” They are always keen to go on this journey with couples and exceed their design expectations

When James met Dugan Words Kate Moore

Love can make people act differently to their normal selves. However, after talking to Dugan, it appears it can also make people act like they are having a heart attack which was the thought running through his head whilst James was down on one knee at one of their favourite restaurants ‘The Sugar Club’. Once Dugan got over the shock of thinking that the love of his life was having a critical emergency moment he said yes, and they celebrated their engagement immediately with friends and family who were hiding in suspense in the bar area. Kourawhero Mountain Lodge in Warkworth provided their perfect wedding one-stopshop venue as it incorporated all their

passions: showcasing “out of this world food” (a three-course meal prepared by a Michelin chef no less) and providing beautiful scenery for their intimate wedding of 35 guests to dance the night away too. The Matakana Markets are one of their favourite places to visit and when they are able, they beeline to the stunning blooms that Whangateau Roses produce, so it made sense that they had them adorn the venue, including a rose petal trail which led Dugan up the aisle to where James was waiting for him to exchange handpicked rings from signature collections at Michael Hill Jewellers. Dugan complemented his groom's attire with a stunning metallic rose gold blazer and

James wore a sharp navy-blue waist coat and blazer. They each had two bridesmaids, made up of family and close friends wearing their respective colours. The couple spent their first date on Maraetai Beach six years ago which explains why the theme of rustic beach was their inspiration for the planning of their big day. This is echoed by the favours they gave their guests – thoughtfully prepared by Dominique (one of the bridesmaids) and contained sand from Goat Island – another of their favourite beaches. Tanja from Little Doves Photography captured all the moments so they will be able

to relive their romantic day over and over as well as share it with all those unable to attend due to Covid restrictions. “Tanja provided great energy and made it all so natural and special,” they say. James’ favourite part of the day “other than getting married to the love of his life” was the fact that Fleur, from Kourawhero Mountain Lodge, set everything up perfectly and that nothing went wrong. Dugan adored the fact that at the reception he could see the conversation (and wine) was flowing and that such magical connections were made. www.kourawhero.co.nz www.littledoves.co.nz

Designing Perfection John Crockett and Michaeljohn Piercey are the creative minds behind Matakana Country Park Jewellers. On any given day they spend 95% of their time designing and manufacturing one-off custom made pieces of jewellery right here in Matakana. Whether it's new engagement rings, wedding rings, pendants, or breathing new life into old jewellery, their passion for design is almost an obsession. They use a mixture of traditional and modern techniques to design and manufacture their jewellery, using the latest 3D design technology and hand made techniques. A consultation starts with a conversation and looking to see what inspires the client. From there they 3D model a design that allows them to make photo realistic images for the client to look at. They then show them the 3D model on screen and the fun begins. The beauty about this software is they can tweak and change the design in front of the clients’ eyes often creating two or three different styles for the client to choose from. They can show the client almost anything they want to see, within the same design they can change the stones from round brilliant to pear, princess, marquise and so on. They can show various options for the metal colours and stone types such as Sapphire, Emerald, Rubys...the choice is endless. When the client is happy with the design, they then 3D print an exact wax replica for the client to try on if they wish. “This is an amazing tool for the client to get an idea of proportion and at that stage it is the client’s choice of whether we hand-make the piece of jewellery or 3D print and cast in their preferred alloy, usually being 18 ct yellow gold and or platinum,” they tell us. John and Michaeljohn are passionate about what they do and invite you to come down for a free no obligation consultation. mike@michaeljohnjewellry.com | john@johncrockett.co.nz

Big Day, Big Plans Wedding season is covered with these options.

ST ANDREWS WEDDING VENUE, MATAKANA COUNTRY PARK St Andrew's Church Matakana, built in 1896 has a category 2 listing with Heritage New Zealand. The church was relocated to Matakana Country Park in 2007 through the generosity of John Baker, then owner of the Park. The return of St Andrews to Matakana by barge from Snells Beach, was a spectacular event. The building was re-located, re-piled, re-wired re-roofed and repainted at that time under the direction of McClean Construction and made ready for use again in an agreement between The Presbyterian Church and the park owner. The Building and grounds are now owned and administered by The St Andrews Matakana Trust as a Presbyterian Church St Andrews has been a popular location for weddings since 2007. The appealing gothic style with filigree is distinctive. The private location on a half-acre site separates it from churches in busy urban locations. Its position in the heart of Matakana and its proximity to reception locations is worth noting. The site can cater for outside wedding ceremonies as well as those in the building. The building is well maintained and has Auckland Council compliance certificates for use as a public venue. The gardens were designed by local landscape architect Liz Morrow. The grounds are maintained to a high standard by a local contractor. Although the church has services from time to time (especially Carols on Christmas Eve), the major use is for wedding ceremonies. 20-30 weddings per year is usual for the building, so advance booking is recommended. Bookings for weddings can be directed to the Trustees below. Neville 021 189 4242 or Glyndyr 027 277 4540 AD FEATURE

I Do-nut In Medieval England weddings, newlyweds would attempt to kiss over a towering stack of sweet rolls. Successfully locking lips was a sign of a prosperous marriage. Wedding trends and styles have changed throughout the years. Bam, from Bam’s Bakery, thinks the humble wedding cake should change too.

30

BRIDAL

“The possibilities of desserts are endless, so why limit yourself on your big day?” “Wedding rings might be traditional, but ours are definitely unique.” Rings of sweet, fluffy dough are the perfect way to celebrate. Donuts are irresistible in a towering stack, and are a show stopper when displayed on

a donut wall. “We can make a donut creation with any colours, sizes, or flavours of your choosing. Glazed, filled, or simply dusted with cinnamon sugar, they will leave your guests coming back for more.” Macarons are the perfect bite-sized treat, packed full of flavour. You can choose from

Bam’s popular flavours, or experiment with your own flavour ideas. An array of custom coloured macarons that match your theme make a scrumptious visual statement. Being gluten free, macarons can also be enjoyed by those with allergies. No wonder they are a favourite, this delicate French treat makes an elegant and tasty addition to your dessert table. At the end of the night say thank you to your guests with delicious wedding favours. Bam's Bakery can design custom cookies to match your colour theme, stamped with a personalised phrase. Names of the newlyweds and the date of the wedding is a popular way to commemorate the occasion. Want to keep some tradition? A mini cake is both traditional and modern, perfect for the cutting ceremony and photos. A wedding cake is a work of art no matter the size, and a petite version will complement any dessert arrangement. Bam’s Bakery is always happy to work with you to create a dreamy dessert that both looks and tastes amazing. “We don’t limit ourselves, and we think you shouldn’t either. Don’t be afraid to break tradition and celebrate your special day with a special dessert.” www.bamsbakery.com www.instagram.com/bamsbakery

Top of the Dome The iconic Dome Café (formerly ‘The Top O the Dome Tearooms’) will be reopening its doors in time for Anzac weekend.

Nestled in the picturesque Dome Forest, just a five minute drive North of Warkworth, it is the perfect spot to enjoy a great coffee, grab a bite and unwind amongst the native bush. Built in 1981 by the Civil family, the café has been run by various operators over the past four decades, the last having run the café for 15 years before permanently closing in November 2019. Sitting empty for nearly two years, the café was purchased in October 2020 by Onno Ursem and Makin Taraniko. Since taking over the business at the end of last year, the couple have lovingly refurbished the café, creating a fresh and light space without losing any of the building's original charm. The wrap around deck has been completely replaced with beautiful hardwood and box planters bursting with native plants and herbs for the kitchen. Inside has been stripped back to make the most of the light and decorated with

quirky upcycled and reclaimed furnishings. Surrounded by native bush, the indooroutdoor feel is enhanced with plants hanging from a suspended trellis and windows wrapping around three sides of the café. Their menu will consist of homemade Kiwi brunch classics, sourced locally wherever possible, alongside a cabinet full to the brim with delicious ready-to-eat snacks and sweet treats. Coffee will be a big feature for Dome Café, they are working alongside Meebz, a specialised boutique coffee company based on the Northshore. Initially they will be serving Meebz signature Italian beans, a rich coffee full of flavour, but they will be working on creating their own unique blend, tailored specifically to Dome Café...keep an eye out for this one in the future! For the more adventurous, the café is conveniently situated opposite the walking track to the Dome Summit which has

spectacular views of the Dome mountains and forests. The Dome Walkway track is situated on the Te Araroa Trail which is New Zealand's longest walking track! The 3,000km walk starts from Cape Reinga at the top of the North Island to Bluff at the bottom of the South Island. The owners are also in the process of building a dedicated campsite for TA Trail trampers, including a proper kitchen and bathroom facilities...they will even have hot solar powered showers! Trampers and diners are also welcome to make use of the free wifi and selection of the latest newspapers and magazines. There is ample parking onsite and EV chargers are available free of charge. Open seven days, pop in for a visit or follow them on Instagram or Facebook. 496 State Highway 1, Dome Valley www.facebook.com/DomeCafeNZ

Perfect Preserves Learning how to preserve foods can save you money, helps to reduce food wastage and offers some food security in case of emergency, as well as providing you with healthy, organic homegrown (or locally grown) homemade food all year long.

Meat, Poultry & Seafood The most obvious and quick solution to longterm storage of meats is freezing, especially useful if you have a home-kill and want to keep yourself stocked up for the year. Dry curing and smoking are age-old processes that lend themselves perfectly to meats, fish and poultry. Salting is used predominantly to cure meats, including ham, salami, jerky and bacon, but you can also preserve dried herbs in salt, as well as citrus fruits (lemons in salt is a popular Moroccan preserve) and also egg yolks. Sugar is sometimes used in tandem with salt and spices when dry curing meat. Smoking is an extra step in the curing process for most meats and seafood like salmon. Eggs, Dairy and Soybean Products Eggs and dairy such as yoghurt, sour cream and kefir, and also soybeans (miso, soy sauce, tempeh) lend themselves perfectly to the fermentation process. Freezing milk, cream, cheese, butter and egg is a quick option. Berries The most obvious choices here would be freezing or making jam with strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, currants and other berries. However they also do well when dehydrated by simply using your home oven at the lowest temperature, or an at-home food dehydrator, keeping smaller berries intact or slicing larger ones such as strawberries. Fruits Freezing fruits is a good basic go-to for keeping your smoothie ingredients fresh and retaining their nutritional value - perfect for bananas, mangoes but pineapples and peaches do well here too. Apples can be bottled as sauce, or fermented and turned into apple cider vinegar or alcoholic cider. Most fruit can be fermented and turned into wine, mead or alcohol of some sort.

Sliced dehydrated apples, pears, peaches, mangoes and bananas are beautiful in baking, for snacks or as fruit leather. Tomatoes can be frozen to canned or turned into sauce later on, sundried, or dehydrated. Vegetables Carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, green beans and shelled peas freeze well if blanched for two minutes first. Freezing is also suitable for avocados and pumpkin if peeled and diced or cooked/puréed first. Also shredded courgette ready for use in cakes or brownies. Herbs do well frozen as-is or chopped up and frozen in oil, as pesto or in a compound butter. Cucumbers, carrots, asparagus, green beans, cauliflower and cabbage (for sauerkraut and kimchi) can be fermented/ pickled in a mixture of salt and water. Dehydrate kale and some leafy greens to make kale chips, or dehydrate kale and greens like spinach to make a powder that can be added to soups, stews, sauces, meatballs and sausages. Cucumbers and courgette rounds make great veggie chips, as do root vegetables such as carrots, beetroot and potatoes but these should be sliced and blanched first and then dehydrated.

Clean and Serene - Chamomile When we hear the word ‘chamomile’, love it or hate it, a warm soothing cup of herbal tea is likely the first image that comes to mind. But this liquid gold holds more power than just a sleep inducing elixir.

Chamomile is one of the most ancient medicinal herbs known to mankind. One of the oldest, most widely used and well documented medicinal plants in the world, it has been recommended for thousands of years for a variety of healing applications for a plethora of human ailments such as hay fever, inflammation, muscle spasms, menstrual disorders, insomnia, ulcers, wounds, rheumatic pain, gastrointestinal and sleep disorders to name a few. So from those of us who find it hard to wind down at the end of the day, to the environmentally sensitive and intolerant amongst us, chamomile could truly be your best friend. Well known for its therapeutic, calming and anti-inflammatory properties, recent studies also show that this wondrous healing herb is not only a natural antibacterial, antifungal and anti allergenic, but also a powerful cleaning ingredient. Unfortunately due to slick marketing, many of us have been programmed to believe things like bleach, alcohol and other harsh-smelling disinfectant cleansers are the way to germproof our environments. However, natural soap has been humankind’s most loyal ally against unwanted germs for centuries - long before

chemical disinfectants came along. It is now scientifically recognised as one of the most effective defenses against invisible pathogens, even more so than the most aggressively marketed chemical cleaners. Cleaning with good old soap and water alone literally picks up and washes germs and harmful bacteria away, rather than leaving them on surfaces along with harmful chemical residues that begin to build up in the home environment. Boosting that formula with chamomile makes a highly effective, non-irritating and truly toxin-free cleaning solution that not only washes away grime and germs, but also removes residues from any potentially harmful products.

With the increasing number of people suffering from allergies and irritations brought on by strongly fragranced chemical cleaners and their residual build-up, along with those of us who just want to know that we are providing a healthy and safe, toxinfree environment for our family, this simple combination is an uncomplicated and highly effective formula. Megan Bennett own experience with debilitating headaches every time she cleaned her home set her on a journey of research and discovery, in the quest for a truly fragrance and toxin-free formula that worked and didn’t break the bank. Two years later Cleanz was born. A truly safe, truly toxin, allergen and fragrance-free

soap-based cleaning concentrate, boosted with the power of chamomile. This one concentrate has literally dozens of uses in different dilutions, from cutting through the grease on your kitchen cabinets and making light work of your laundry to gently washing your face, hands and body as a foaming cleanser. Initially designed for sensitivities and allergy sufferers, Cleanz has also become a favourite of health and budget conscious parents and mums-to-be, who simply want to know that they are creating the safest environment for their families. Re-construction Beachside Words Kate Moore

Fifth time’s a charm for Heather Walton and husband Mark Bycroft who over the last six years have bought and sold four houses in the Omaha area, “I am a professional mover,” laughs Heather, “but this is our forever Omaha home.” Heather knew it was her forever holiday home the moment she stepped onto the property, it was only quietly on the market and had a house already there which was just ten years old. Originally Heather and Mark thought they would just repaint and re-carpet and then “it would be fine to holiday with the family in”. However,

the feeling that the current dwelling was not doing the very special location any justice, with stunning views of the hills out one window and the ocean lapping a few hundred metres away, continued to echo in their heads and soon the ideas began flowing. Not long after that the entire house had been taken apart and was put back together by the careful hands of Tim Nickel Construction. Heather holds high praise for Tim’s team and loved how “it wasn’t just a job to them, they genuinely cared, and (she) got warm fuzzies when they did a high five when the

kitchen was completed.” One of Heather’s friends is an amazing interior designer who, although too busy to take on the project, offered advice along the way. One of those pieces of advice was to be careful not to use herringbone on the floors as it may be too busy for the space, however after dashing into Flooring Xtra in Warkworth and falling in love with the ‘Quick Step Intenso Herringbone in Merino Grey’ Heather knew she had to have it on her floors and took the risk. It has created a subtle statement of ‘wow’ that everyone must admit is stunning.

Heather's favourite spot is her haven of an en-suite and walk-in robe. In the original house there was a tiny en-suite and wardrobe with a strange study nook; by removing a wall the study was gone and instead a large, dreamy wetroom styled en-suite was designed to wash away the stresses of everyday life. The heart of the home was brought to life by Matakana Kitchen and Joinery. The black kitchen shot through with bronze and coupled with stained American oak was an easy decision for Heather and this dynamic space was designed by Jeff at Matakana Kitchen and Joinery with enthusiasm. The couple’s teenage son has been given his own zone of the house on the lower level allowing teenagers to be teenagers which includes a bunk room sectioned off by an amazing barn door that Mark designed. Heather remarks on how neat it is to see them chilling out in this part of the house with some lying on the bespoke bunks, some watching TV and some outside where they have installed a golf putting green and fireplace. This Omaha house was created as a retreat, a place of relaxation and to give the family a chance to de-stress with the idea that one day the family could move from the North Shore and reside there permanently. Heather's overall aesthetic of simplistic elegance shines through in every corner of the house, no space has been left untouched and now the property has a home that holds its own on the magnificently positioned section.

Follow The Bliss When Coral (Noel) first came to Snells Beach in 2012 she was a creative director on a business trip to produce animated TV shows. Nine years later she is a full time painter selling her artworks locally and internationally to collectors from New Zealand and Asia, to North America and Europe.

Her first solo art show opened this March at Little & Local in Snells Beach and runs to 17 May, featuring her floral series in oil and abstracts in acrylics. Its theme “Follow the Bliss” tells the story: “I wanted to pay tribute to the beautiful place and community of the Snells Beach/Warkworth/Matakana areas,” she says. “It’s the natural unspoiled landscape and the creative atmosphere that inspired me to paint.” Coral originally comes from Taiwan with rich Chinese and Japanese heritages. Trained from the film program of the University of Southern California, she had worked extensively in the film industry in Hollywood, made an award-winning documentary in the refugee camps in

Thailand, and directed a hit web series for Zuru’s Rainbocorns which garnered two million viewership in five months. “Only painting with a brush has brought me deep emotional joy which I haven’t found anywhere else,” she says. The result is that she filled her sketchbooks with watercolour images of the local farms, vineyards, river boats, taking full account of the seasonal lights, shades and colours. When the 2020 lockdown happened, she decided it was to be her “annus mirabilis (Miracle Year)” - she unleashed her creative passion on larger canvases, experimenting with abstract acrylics and realistic oils. Her talent was quickly realised to the extent that her works were sold out on a Facebook platform during the lockdown. So she pivoted from film making to painting and has never looked back. Guided by an intuitive palette of colours, Coral loves to capture emotions with light and looks for the deep spaces created by lines and shapes. When working intuitively and kinesthetically, she often feels drawn into becoming part of nature where she embodies a jellyfish floating in the deep blue, or a willow dancing in the wind. When not creating her original works, Coral takes commissions to capture the deeper dreams and aspirations of her clients through the gamut of techniques she is highly proficient in. Her artworks can be purchased through her website, social media and art shows. Above all she wants to create vibrant and lush artworks that bring wonder and mystery to her audience. www.noelyangart.com | coralnoelyang@gmail.com

The 1918 ‘Spanish’ Flu in Rodney Words Jenny Collins

The 1918 influenza epidemic killed more New Zealanders than any other natural disaster before or since. While the First World War claimed the lives of 16,688 New Zealand soldiers over four years, the influenza epidemic killed nearly 9,000 civilians in less than two months. While wartime censors suppressed news of the flu in order to avoid affecting morale, the Spanish media was free to report on it. Because of this many people believed that the flu originated in Spain (hence being dubbed “the Spanish Flu”) although that is not true. Recent studies suggest it began in the USA and spread with the arrival of American troops in France. It struck the young and fit; few families were unaffected and men between the ages of 20 and 40 suffered badly. Maori communities were hit hard, their mortality being seven times that of Pakeha. The ‘Spanish Flu’ arrived in the final months of the First World War as soldiers were returning home. In military camps overcrowding, atrocious weather and the arrival of the flu combined to create a deadly mix - 286 men died. Ironically it was celebrations marking the end of the war that helped to spread the infection.

By early November 1918, as the influenza pandemic peaked in Auckland, the worried citizens of Warkworth established a Bureau of Information at the Council Chambers. Led by Alexander James Warin, they published a list of precautions. People were advised not to share drinking cups, to avoid congregating indoors and to cough or sneeze into handkerchiefs. Patients with the flu were to isolate, take a light nutritious diet and avoid public places. Some adopted doubtful remedies such as “Salix the cure for influenza in all its stages” that were regularly advertised in the local papers. The Rodney and Otamatea Times of 6 November 1918 warned readers that ‘“unless the inhabitants wake up and adopt the measures suggested a serious epidemic may result”. Not all of Rodney was affected. While nine members of the Algie family living at Mullet Point were stricken, no cases were reported in Leigh. The current known total of victims is 15 - seven Europeans and eight Maori – a death rate of 1.7 and 46.7 per thousand population respectively. That compares with a much higher death rate in Auckland of 1,128 Europeans and 35 Maori – a death rate of 7.6 and 68.4 per thousand people. Local victims included Kenneth Cranley

Warin who died after returning from WWI, 19 year-old Cyril Warin who played in the Brass Band and Charles Lewis Innes (aged 42) who died while on holiday from Hamilton. Timi and Mati Makoare (aged 42 and 44) died on 25 November 1918 in Kaipara and John and Lorna Wilson whose family owned the Warkworth Cement Works died in Auckland leaving their three young children orphans. Like many largely rural communities, Rodney had fewer resources to fight the influenza. This put a premium on social cohesion and an area’s capacity for organisation. In Warkworth a call went out for volunteers to help local doctors run emergency hospitals at the Wilson Cement Works House and the Cottage hospital. Other measures included closing the local picture theatre and postponing social events. State schools in the Rodney area closed on 6 November 1918 and did not re-open for two months. However the weekly agricultural sales in Auckland continued as did the Wellsford monthly cattle sales. Jenny Collins is an historian with an interest in the 1918 Flu Pandemic. She will be speaking about the experience of the flu pandemic in the Warkworth and Rodney area at the Warkworth Museum on 11 May at 10am.

Leigh Volunteer Library Celebrates 150 Years On Saturday 22 May the Leigh Library celebrates a historical milestone with its 150th year anniversary. Established in 1871, it is the oldest rural volunteer community library in New Zealand, that has been open continuously for 150 years. This library still works as it probably did in 1871, with no internet but family cards with numbers and names. Books are issued with a date stamp and manually entered. All run by a committee of ten, with very experienced former Village Bookshop owner Tracey Lawton as the librarian, and a further twelve volunteers assisting with library duties.

Many descendants of this committee still live in the areas and are members. So began the library in “Collingwood” a large three gabled home comprising thirteen rooms, the home of Charles Clarke and his wife Mary Ann (nee Wyatt). This grand home was also used widely for community affairs including the first and second Horticultural Shows. It was also the office of the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages – Clarke was the first Registrar and lay preacher conducting marriages and funerals.

On 27 May 1871, a young settler from England, Charles Septimus Clarke called a public meeting at his home for those living in the Omaha District which covered the areas from Whangateau, Ti Point, Leigh, Pakiri, to Te Arai Lakes.

In 1874, the library moved to the Little Omaha School built on land donated by Clarke and in 1880, twelve guarantors vouched twenty pounds to register the library as Omaha Public Library under the Public Libraries Power Act 1875. This enabled funding from the local council board, plus some funding from the Education Board.

As a result of this meeting, the Little Omaha Library founding committee was formed.

The Leigh Hall (Leigh) was built in 1886 and in 1890 extensions included a room off

the stage for the library. This became the home of the Library for the next fifty years. Unfortunately on 16 December 1958, the community lost not only its social gathering place, but also all its library books when the hall burnt to the ground. A temporary library was set up in the Young home until March 1960 when a new Leigh Hall was completed on the same site. The Leigh Library operated out of the basement of the Leigh Hall for the next 35 years. “The Cottage”, is the present home of the Leigh Library, opened in 1995. It is a re-sited, century old worker’s cottage from Warkworth, donated by the Rodney Council. Eligibility for membership remains the same today as in 1871. Residents of the former Omaha District which include: Leigh, Pakiri, Matheson Bay, Ti Point, Tramcar Bay and Whangateau. 15 Cumberland Street, Leigh

Warkworth Cement Works Words Leah Botherway

Located on the banks of the Mahurangi River, the Wilson Cement Works gets its name from its original owner Nathaniel Wilson who started a small lime works in 1878. He was joined by his brothers and formed Messiers John Wilson and Company which produced slaked lime. Warkworth lime was considered to be the best in New Zealand and Nathaniel spent the next nearly ten years providing lime to businesses throughout the country.

and over the years production steadily increased, supplying various projects around New Zealand. In 1882 Nathaniel Wilson's cement was chosen to build the Rangitoto Beach at McKenzie Bay to the west of Rangitoto Island. The Grafton bridge, which opened in 1910 was held up as an example of the high quality of their cement and was the longest single span concrete bridge in the world at that time.

In 1883, Nathaniel learned of an English cement maker Joseph Aspin of Leeds and his work to develop a superior product, and so studied Aspin’s notes and started his own experiments. Aspin had named his product ‘Portland Cement’, describing it as an artificial stone resembling the smooth finish and colour of Portland stone that was being quarried and used in buildings of the time, often in London.

By 1898, demand was increasing and, as a result, more boilers, kilns and grinding mills were installed. This allowed production to increase from 1,524 tons to 7,629 tons by 1902. Further expansions were required over the years and J Wilson and Company became one of the largest employers in the area.

J Wilson and Company became the first business in the Southern Hemisphere to commercially manufacture Portland Cement

By 1928, after decades of success, following an amalgamation with the New Zealand Portland Cement Company, the Works were finally closed, and all machinery was moved north to Whangarei.

In 1941, the The Demolition Squad of the Rodney Battalion, Home Guard under Lieutenant P R Gardner, demolished the smaller of the two reinforced concrete chimney stacks as part of a training exercise. The Cement Works is now a place that almost feels like a local’s secret. What was once the large quarry has been flooded over the years and is now a popular (and very deep) swimming hole, overlooked by the ruins of the cement works that still stand to this day. The site has been identified as a Historic Heritage Place by Auckland Council and Heritage New Zealand. DPA Architects were commissioned to prepare a conservation plan to assess the significance of the site and the various structures located there, with a condition report and schedule of remedial work also produced. www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/ parks-recreation/Pages/park-details. aspx?Location=3540 www.warkworthmuseum.co.nz

Scandrett Regional Park A Secluded Spot Steeped in History Words Leah Botherway

Just a 20-minute drive from Warkworth towards Martins Bay, lies Scandrett Regional Park, a picturesque and secluded area located on the north-eastern tip of the Mahurangi Peninsula. Comprising of farmland, beaches, walking tracks and historic farm buildings, Scandrett Regional Park is often overshadowed by nearby Tawharanui Regional Park, but offers a completely different - and in the peak of summer, more relaxing - experience. Whilst the youngest of the Regional Parks in the area, the history of the land itself dates back centuries, with some examples of this history preserved and still standing to this day. The Scandrett family originally purchased what would one day become Scandrett Regional Park back in 1864. At the time they nostalgically named their new property Lisadian after their old hometown in Ireland. Lisadian continued to operate as a successful and profitable farm right through to 1993 when it was purchased by the Auckland Regional Council. Over the coming years the bach and caravan leases were either withdrawn or expired and then most of the buildings removed from the land. In 2004, Scandrett Regional Park was officially opened to the public and became available for everyone to enjoy. The farm buildings still remain at the park and are free for visitors to wander through and immerse themselves in the history of the land and the family that once lived there. Scandrett Regional Park is now a peaceful pocket in what is a bustling area over summer and is the perfect place to walk, picnic, fish, swim or simply have a snooze under a Pohutukawa Tree. Whilst there is no camping at the park, SCC approved vehicles can stay overnight and, for the true blue Kiwi bach experience, you can rent one of the three restored waterfront original baches that remain onsite. www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/ parks-recreation/Pages/park-details. aspx?Location=225

Waipu Heritage Trail Words Sharron Cole

The story of Waipu is unique, covering two migrations. It started at the battle of Culloden in 1745, when Bonnie Prince Charlie’s army was routed by the English who subsequently outlawed the bagpipes and the tartan, punishing the Highlanders and encouraging the Lairds to “clear” the Highlands. Many of these displaced highlanders migrated to Canada through Cape Breton/Nova Scotia in Canada. During the 1840s, crop failure and land shortage meant once again these Scottish pioneers looked elsewhere in their search for paradise. Between 1852 and 1860, they built six ships, undertook the six month sea voyage to New Zealand and settled in Waipu.

Most people are familiar with the Waipu Museum, described as one of the top ten museums in New Zealand. There are many ways to experience history and the Waipu Heritage Trail, developed by Waipu 150 Trust for the 150th reunion in 2003, takes you out of the town and into the surrounding countryside and coast. You go back to the very beginning of settlers’ lives in Waipu, gaining an insight into the way things were and how they have evolved over the past one hundred and seventy years.

There are 15 marker stones with plaques. The trail takes you past some of the district’s historic houses, including the more than 150 year old Hugh McKenzie house up Glenmohr Road. This old kauri house has been home

WAIPU MUSEUM The Waipu Museum is proud of its reputation as one of New Zealand’s best small museums. Its “double migration” story, told through a variety of interactive exhibits, shows how almost 1,000 Gaelic-speaking Highland Scots journeyed from the harsh conditions of post-Culloden Scotland to Nova Scotia and then, how their “search for paradise” brought them to Waipu in 1854. The museum maintains a database of over 100,000 people, recording the genealogy of descendants of the original settlers. There is also a gift shop with a great range of products. Hours: Every day 10am-4pm. 36 The Centre , Waipu 0510 | 09 432 0746 www.waipumuseum.com

industry to the settlers with visits to the wharves at McLean’s Bridge and at the estuary/Waipu River bar. After passing the cemetery, you finish the trail at Waipu Cove, scene of the shipbuilding yard and of the original cove boarding house. You can then return to the town by the Cove Road or take the scenic rural route via McLean and South Roads. If you want to follow the trail, drop in at the Museum for a guide. It takes about two hours, but it can easily be undertaken in parts. The trail will shortly be available on the izi.travel app. 36 The Centre, Waipu www.waipumuseum.com

Northern Tours with a Difference Founder of Northern War Tours, Peter Johnston, is a man with much experience and knowledge of our land and its history. An ex Army Officer in the rank of Major, Peter is also a former senior high school history teacher. Words Sally Peters

Despite being semi-retired, Peter decided to start a new business venture to keep his mind active with something that would also reflect his passion. He started Northern War Tours, offering an array of exciting tours that are mainly situated in the Bay of Islands. The Northern War tours are about 1800-1840s where two cultures (Maori and Pakeha) interacted and occasionally collided. Peter’s original idea was aimed to spread the story of our birth as a nation to those generations who missed out on New Zealand history in their education.
