NEW ANIMALS OF NZ GAME Maria Artho of NZ IN A BOX ® remembers the first time she took her first edition memory card game into a school. The cards provided something for every child to relate to. She says she will never forget the joy and excitement of the children as they identified images. Memory card games are for all ages 5-100 with super-easy rules; they promote visual recognition, concentration, and cognitive skills. They are great for short-term memory with follow-on advantages for longterm memory. Second edition games of NZ IN A BOX ® are now available: Te Reo Māori and Animals of NZ. Matakana based Maria is currently working on another game - Explore NZ and another children’s picture book. www.nzinabox.nz

DAWSONS - COTTAGE DISPENSARY Affectionately known as the ‘Pony Poo farm,’ this is a little nod to the humble Snells Beach icon. Their gentle homage to the land and the people who tended it previously. Damian and Steph aren’t letting anything go to waste. They spent summer mixing and tasting flavours and have bottled some beauties. Their Guava Habanero jam is a sultry little number. The surplus guava seeds were slow roasted and crushed for an exfoliant soap to come soon. Pop by - there are veggies, fruits, plants, flowers and herbs daily. 124 Mahurangi East Road, Snells Beach

SUPER SAUSAGE SIZZLE FUNDRAISER On the last Saturday of every month, Barfoot & Thompson Warkworth, Warkworth Butchery and Warkworth Rotary raise much needed funds for local charities and organisations – perhaps groups that would not normally get the exposure within the local community.

FOR THE LOVE OF DOGS There will be many residents of Mangawhai and surrounding areas happy to see that Wendy Cumiskey, who has the busy grooming salon, ‘For The Love of Dogs’ will be opening their doggy daycare very soon. Wendy’s passion for dogs has resulted in many clients asking for a stay over for their beloved animals and it is a credit to Wendy that they would entrust their fur babies to her care.

Find them next to Warkworth Butchery on Saturday, 28 May, 10am-2pm and purchase a sausage sizzle (kindly donated by Warkworth Butchery) and make your tasty contribution count.

The dogs attending the daycare will have a fabulous and fun day and be well cared for by Wendy and her husband, Andre and daughters, Hannah and Charlotte.

TASTY TREATS FROM THE BAKERY With 40 years as a professional musician under his belt, mostly based in Australia, Brian Baker certainly knows his stuff. Words Luke Williamson

"I’m here for people who have a song they want to record. I’ll help them finish it and get it up on Spotify or YouTube; get it out to the world. I help my clients all the way through because I know my way around this stuff." Brian has performed with many Australian bands, wrote a top 20 single, and co-wrote the score for the movie ‘Rikki and Pete’ with Eddie Rayner from Split Enz. Eddie and Brian continued to work together as ‘The Makers,’ releasing two albums and having a hit single, ‘Big Picture.’ Brian has just returned to Paparoa, Northland, to build ‘The Bakery’ recording studio on the 10-acre permaculture farm where he and his partner live. "We’ve been here for a year and I’m very happy with the studio setup I’ve created. It’s in a 40foot shipping container and my clients are producing some wonderful music. I’ve just had a woman here who sings in Lithuanian

and her track is now being played daily on Lithuanian national radio." After living such a large part of his life in Australia, the decision to move back to New Zealand was actually pretty easy. "I went to school in Whangarei and Northland has always felt like my spiritual home. Also, my daughter produced my first grandchild... the land, the people, the climate...it all just feels right." The recording studio is succeeding because of Brian’s amazing range of talents. "I can help people out a lot. I do songwriting, vocals, play guitar, bass, keyboards and drums, and I have a heap of experience as

a producer/engineer. People can come to me with a song and, generally after one day, walk out of the studio with a complete track that far exceeds their expectations." Brian still works hard on his own material and was pleased to get his latest song, ‘Everywhere You Go,’ added to the latest Air New Zealand playlist. ‘As with any professional musician, I need the support of an audience. People can listen to my music on my website, Spotify or YouTube, and I’ve got an EP coming out at the end of April. Then I want to get out and play live.’ Brian has retained a publishing deal with Origin Music in Sydney, and they continue to

support and promote his work. While there was some risk involved in moving away from Australia, Brian is yet to find any obvious drawbacks. "There are some fantastically creative people here in the Kaipara area. I’ve been getting together with a few mates and jamming, which keeps me going." The unique nature of his property also nurtures his creativity. "It’s an amazing set up – a kind of oasis. I can get up in the morning, make myself a really good cup of coffee, wander up to the studio for a couple of hours of guitar practice, and then work with some lovely people to create fantastic music. That’s the dream and that’s what’s happening." The combination of a top-class studio setup and serene surroundings has inspired Brian to look at offering accommodation to musicians so they can use it as a retreat to work on their projects. "We’ve got a glorious baby-grand piano here and I look at it and think, well, that’s ready when Nick Cave wants to come over," he laughs. "We’re only a year into this project so far, but that’s the way it might go." Check out Brian’s music in all the usual places and, if you’ve got a song or two you always wished you could record, pop over to The Bakery and let Brian help you turn them into world-class treats. www.brianbaker.nz

KEEP ON TRUCKIN’ Even from his early 20s, Blake Noble had a strong interest in the world of trucking. "I would spend time watching the trucks to see where they went, what they did, how and why. I’m just as inquisitive now about what happens out on the road." Words Luke Williamson

After buying Transcon in 2015, Blake set about developing the trucking business into one that was highly responsive to the needs of its local customers. While Blake still likes seeing a new truck arrive at the yard, the true value to him of that truck is in helping Transcon customers get their products to market. "I want to work with good people to do good things. A lot of what goes on the truck, we know where it’s come from, where it’s going and the impact it’s going to have." Sawmill Brewery has a strong partnership with Transcon, as demonstrated by their recent production of a special fresh hop beer. Blake explains, "We had a truck meet a plane from Nelson at Auckland Airport and collect the bags of fresh hops. We delivered the load to the brewery that night

and they went straight into production. In the meantime, we also delivered the cans which will be used for the finished brew. Finally, when it’s ready, we’ll deliver the finished

beer to the outlets. That’s the sort of circular system I relish. We’ve touched just about every part of the process, other than the actual brewing."

Being aware of what the trucks have taken into a business and assessing what they

can take back out is a key part of Blake’s

business strategy. "I look to see how we can work more closely with clients to make their businesses successful. As they grow, we

can grow. I deal with the business owners and we can relate to each other’s needs and difficulties."

Transcon thrives because of its attention to detail, versatility, and service surety. Blake says, "I really feel that obligation of service to local growers and manufacturers. Without that guarantee, we don’t have a business." To be sure of maintaining standards, Transcon regularly surveys its customers. "I take great pride in the positive feedback we get because that’s a team effort; it’s not just me," says Blake. While Blake has one eye firmly trained on business opportunities, taking care of the Transcon team is vitally important to him. "You’ve got to love your team or somebody else will. That can be in the services we offer (income protection insurance, financial advice, emotional wellbeing services) or making sure the equipment

they use is top-notch or having a drinks fridge and coffee machine available when the drivers come through." Transcon is steadily expanding and expects to have more trucks on the road by the end of the year, but Blake is very aware of the need to remain agile and responsive. "We’re making sure that what we do aligns with what our customers need and will help them to continue to grow." Aware of the difficulties in getting skilled, experienced staff, Transcon has launched a cadetship scheme. "We need to be prepared to invest, in every sense, in the development of new resources for our business and our industry. We need to attract new people to it," says Blake. As for everyone, Covid has been challenging for Transcon, but Blake used the time to fine-tune how his business functions. "That downtime also meant our customers were able to talk to me about what they need from us – and, previously, they might not have had that time. Off the back of that, we picked up 6-8 new clients." Covid also made customers really look at the reliability and transparency of their supply chain. They realised that, while the price is important, having a transport company that is present, versatile and dependable is just as important. "And we’ve got that in spades!" says Blake. www.transcon.co.nz

LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT A love story full of travelling, adventure and happy pets! Meet Leda and Camille, a beautiful couple that experienced love at first sight in 2017, and they've been absolutely inseparable ever since. After crossing paths at a café where Camille was working, the pair had ten short, incredible days together before Camille's working visa ended and she had to return to France. Although, that's not where this love story finished. A future together was something the pair was sure of, and the rest is history. Photos Wild Spirit Wedding Photography

HOW DID THE PAIR OF YOU MEET? There was an instant spark when Leda stepped into the café where I used to work; it seemed like fireworks. We had both recently come out of long-term relationships, and my (Camille's) New Zealand visa was ending. I returned to France, and after a few months of long-distance and keeping in touch, Leda flew me back to New Zealand, and we've been by each other's side ever since. WHAT COMMON INTERESTS DO YOU SHARE? We've travelled a lot together, but our favourite hobby is adventuring with our dogs! We have six dogs that we adore, Zephyr, Neva, Echo, Louie, Beanie and Ashkii. We are also both dog walkers and trainers; as you can tell, we love our furry friends.

WHAT IS THE STORY BEHIND THE MAGICAL ENGAGEMENT?

I proposed in February 2020. At sunset, I had Leda's heart dog carry the ring on a specially made bow tie collar in the Bay of Islands. Leda also surprised me by trying to emulate the proposal this year. She had our Chihuahua carry the ring up to me, unfortunately, minutes after having rolled in cow poop! It's not always a glamorous lifestyle, but it is always entertaining! TELL US A BIT ABOUT THE WEDDING?

We had a very intimate ceremony with close friends and family and all of the dogs at Te Whai Bay Winery. Hosted in their gorgeous glasshouse, our special day was just fantastic. The lovely celebrant Jane King did a fabulous job of our ceremony, and Christina from Wild Spirit Wedding Photography, captured every little moment perfectly. Unfortunately, our amazing chef Hercules Noble felt sick that morning. However, he was able to drop off instructions and ingredients for our wedding dinner, which was put together by our guests and ourselves and was simply incredible. It was essential for us to have the dogs involved on our wedding day, we walked down the aisle with them, and they stayed with us through it all. The most meaningful moment was reading our personalised vows with our two deaf dogs by our sides. We then roadtripped the South Island with all six dogs and our rooftop tent for our honeymoon, which was an absolute dream! www.instagram.com/wildspiritwedding www.tewhaibaywines.co.nz

A VIEW MADE FOR MEMORIES Once upon a time, six years ago to be exact, Vanderosa Farm was purchased by the VanKekem family. By day it runs sheep and beef, but by night it has its chance to light up as a shimmering star and offer couples in love a place to begin their “Happily Ever After.” Words Kate Moore | Photos Visualparks

The purpose-built facility was completed in September 2021, and the spacious barn offers a blank canvas for couples to personalise and make their own. The barn itself is 216 square metres, and let’s not forget the vast 168 square metre deck on one side, which offers plenty of space to host up to 150 guests. There is also a large, manicured lawn which lends itself to the ceremony part of the nuptials (if the weather gets the memo), or even lawn games for

everyone to enjoy. While there is no kitchen on-site, the space’s ambience conjures up visions of food trucks or extremely long platters for guests to enjoy; however, it is the bride and grooms’ special day and the VanKekems are believers in dreaming big! plans afoot to create more Pod-like buildings so wedding guests can stay on the property also, but that is for another chapter. Vanderosa is perched on a ridge, allowing glittering Pakiri Beach to take centre stage. At the pinnacle of the farm, you can see Auckland’s Sky Tower one-way, past Whangarei in the other and even spot the Coromandel peninsula shimmering in the distance. This stunning property also offers gorgeous mature native bush on at least

a third of the property. These wonders of nature, combined with special touches such as the giant wooden swing, ensure that there are endless perfect photography spots to guarantee memories are preserved. Jesse VanKekem is excited to be available for, fingers crossed, an entire wedding season (which typically runs December through to April) and is currently busy showing potential brides and grooms through the property. wear, we are also eschewing tradition when it comes to our bridal attire. Trish Peng is leading the charge with her new bridal store ‘Yours Truly.’ The dresses are pre-loved, stunning and a fraction of the price of buying new. Outdated superstitions that wearing a pre-loved dress will bring you bad luck are just that, outdated. The modern bride sees wearing a dress that has already been a part of such a joyous occasion as the ultimate representation of ‘pre-loved.’ While renting clothing for an event isn’t a new concept, renting your bridal gown is becoming increasingly popular. There are numerous NZ-based websites offering stunning gowns that save you money and reduce textile waste. For some of us, our earliest memories involve discovering our mother’s wedding dress and playing dress-up. For those of us with sentiment at heart…having these or other vintage dresses re-worked might be the perfect option for your big day! Other brides are changing the face of the traditional bridal gown by opting for less formal attire. Jumpsuits, suiting and separates are becoming a popular way for brides to re-wear their special ‘gown’ after their big day.

SUSTAINABLE WEDDING DRESSES A big white gown you only wear once is becoming a symbol of unsustainability - Harper’s Bazaar. Words Jess Raffills | Photos Emily Raffills - Point and Shoot Ltd

Traditionally, finding ‘the one’ has referred to not only the perfect husband but also the perfect dress. The dress that shines for one day before spending the rest of its beautiful existence hanging in a dry-cleaning bag in the back of one’s wardrobe! These traditional dresses carry a far heftier price tag than time or money. According to the Green Bride Guide, the average

wedding produces 63 tons of carbon dioxide emissions, alongside 180kg of rubbish! But the face of weddings is changing and so are the dresses. Secondhand or pre-loved fashion is set to be twice the size of fast fashion by 2030, as reported by Harper’s Bazaar. So it makes sense that as well as opting for more climate conducive fashion choices for our everyday

With so many modern brides opting for multiple outfits, it makes sustainable and financial sense to opt for something more transitional. Maggie Marilyn, a NZ designer leading the charge on uncompromising style coupled with a climate-positive status, is fast becoming a popular choice for ‘bridal’ wear as well. Maggie also offers a bespoke service allowing her customers to personalise some of her popular pieces. So, whatever aisle you choose to walk down, pre-loved, non-traditional, rented or re-worked, one thing is for sure - the ‘big white gown’ is fast becoming the ‘Wear whatever you love outfit’ that sees the light of day on more than just one occasion. www.facebook.com/thefinderslife www.thefinderslife.co.nz

WHERE ROSEMARY GROWS Founded in 2016 by Anna Dobson, Where Rosemary Grows is a studio florist and flower farm based in Kaipara Flats, specialising in naturalistic, garden style floral design for weddings and events. Whimsical, romantic, garden inspired florals using the best ingredients from their farm and local growers, creating delicate and unique arrangements. Where Rosemary Grows focuses on seasonality and sustainability for their events. Working within the season is one of the most important aspects of the work. They are inspired by the 'garden style' flowers they grow, from foxgloves, sweetpeas and garden roses in spring to dahlias, zinnia and speciality chrysanthemums in Autumn. Where Rosemary Grows uses eco-friendly methods to create centrepieces and installations that compost after events. WHERE ROSEMARY GROWS Five years ago, a move back to New Zealand after many years of living overseas prompted a career change and set Anna Dobson on the path of floristry and flower farming.

Upon discovering the lack of whimsical 'garden style' flowers available in the New Zealand market at that time, Anna decided to grow her own, initially starting in the back garden, then a 500sqm plot in Warkworth. She then purchased a farm in Kaipara Flats with her husband one year ago and moved with her family to live in the area. The focus was initially on growing flowers to use in her wedding arrangements, but soon Anna had enough to share and now sells into an Auckland-based wholesale market for florists as well as supplying gorgeous and unique blooms for her own weddings. Ever since she used them in her very first wedding, Anna has had a passion for garden roses and now has 800 plants making for spectacular views on the farm come November.

Much focus is placed on minimising waste and its impact on the environment when creating events. "I really want to encourage brides to be guided by the season, both in flower choices and colours," says Anna. "We don't use floral foam or imported flowers and we compost flowers after weddings; almost nothing ends up in the rubbish after our events," says Anna. Anna values the importance of local sourcing and the first port of call is local flower farmers and growers when extra flowers are needed for her weddings. The flower farm is completely no-till; choosing to leave the soil structure undisturbed has many benefits, including soil health and means more carbon is kept in the soil instead

of being released back into the atmosphere. Only organic sprays and fertilisers are used on the farm and the intention is to create more biodiversity and reduce the need for any interventions. "We are certainly on a journey with flower farming, and because we have had the opportunity to start all over again on our farm, we have corrected some previous mistakes," says Anna. Seeing her blooms grow from seed to flower and then into wedding arrangements is the most rewarding aspect of the job for Anna. Anna is available for weddings and events, delivers locally, and runs workshops to share her knowledge and love of flowers throughout the season. www.whererosemarygrows.co.nz

THE VILLA Stepping into The Villa, it’s immediately obvious why it is such a popular choice for visitors wanting to stay in Matakana. Light, airy and elegantly decorated, The Villa is located on a quiet cul-desac which is fast becoming one of Matakana’s most up-market streets, just within five minutes walk to the Matakana Village. Words Milly McMath | Photos Dominey Flores

Designed by award-winning Dorrington Atcheson Architects, The Villa is part of the Torea Road development, which includes a total of 14 lots, which either have completed houses on them or houses under construction or on the drawing board. Rather than being a cookie-cutter of each other, each house in the development is unique, but all relate in some way through the high-end materials used. All have front lawns that run to the road and fences have been kept to a minimum. The result is an exclusive enclave of beautifully designed houses.

Owned by a local couple, The Villa is separate from the main house they live in, yet sited adjacently on the same property. When designing the house with the architects, the owners stressed their desire for a separate and smaller dwelling that could be used as a self-contained space for friends and family or which could operate as a stand-alone house available to rent. Built only six months ago, The Villa needed to look and feel as though it was part of the main house but also have its own unique stamp. With its own entrance, The Villa offers

Our services: • Cedar – protecting oil or stain • Decks and timber – beautifying oil, stain or paint • House-washes • Window cleans • Concrete and paving cleans

two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a goodsized kitchen equipped with everything you need to whip up culinary delights. The fullsized fridge and dishwasher beg you to stay as long as you like. Influenced by Scandinavian design, the light oak floors throughout The Villa and the white walls are perfectly complemented by black joinery. The sun-filled living area is decorated with a minimalist feel and neutral palette of beige, cream and white with accents of olive throughout The Villa. The boucle sofa is very much on-trend while also offering a comfortable spot to recline at the end of a day spent exploring the region’s many offerings. Should you wish to dine al fresco, the spacious and private deck offers a table that seats four. Saving themselves the worry of a high maintenance lawn, the golf-mad owners had the very clever idea of creating a putting green in lieu of grass. So for golf lovers, your putting can be practised as the sun sets both putters and balls are provided. No leaf has been left unturned in The Villa, with every last detail thought of, from the Nespresso coffee machine, the Smeg appliances, the Missoni towels in the bathroom, the Hermes blankets for chilly evenings, and the flat-screen televisions in each bedroom (complete with Netflix) to the welcoming hospitality package of sparkling water, beer and wine. FROM MATAKANA TO DIRECTING THE INTERNATIONAL ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION Winston Cowie, son of Matakana locals Mike and Sue Cowie, grew up at Campbells Beach, Tāwharanui Peninsula. He attended Matakana and Warkworth Primary Schools before embarking on a successful career in environmental policy, film, writing, rugby and adventure that has taken him to over 40 countries, including Antarctica, twice. Words Winston Cowie

I currently work as the Marine Policy Manager at the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi, where I'm settled with my wife, Lucy, and our four children. Pursuing marine policy outcomes in the hottest sea in the world, a natural climate change laboratory, the Arabian Gulf. Named the Middle East Sustainability Manager of the Year in 2021, I am also the Program Director of the International Antarctic Expedition and have just returned from the deep south. This is my report on the expedition and the journey from Matakana to Antarctica. I grew up at Campbells Beach and attended Matakana and Warkworth Primary School. That was around 35 years ago. Things were very different then in Matakana – there was no cinema or the incredible facilities we have today – there was the school, store and

petrol station. Campbells Beach was at the end of a 12km gravel road. We were very rural and we loved it – my siblings and I had a wonderful upbringing around Kawau and the Hauraki Gulf, fishing, diving, surfing, and playing junior rugby for Omaha and then later the Mahurangi Rugby Club. It was interacting with the natural environment that I developed my passion for marine conservation and policy. My dear grandmother Rose Sheat lived close by at Algies Bay – she was a big traveller leading tours all over the world. She travelled to around 70 countries. We grew up looking at her beautiful photo albums of the Galapagos Islands, Africa and Antarctica. Great Granny Rose, who passed away recently at age 97, was a big inspiration to me.

Fast-forward to 2018, four years ago. We received an email at work asking the 1,000 employees at the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi to write 200 words saying why we should go to Antarctica with the polar legend Sir Robert Swan on his renowned 'Leadership on the Edge Programme' the International Antarctic Expedition. Sir Robert was the first explorer to walk to both the south and north poles and has since become a fierce environmental ambassador and advocate for the ongoing protection of Antarctica. The expedition focuses on environmental leadership with impact; climate change; and solutions. He has led 27 expeditions to Antarctica with over 4000 international alumni over the last 20 years. In 2018 I was one of three chosen to represent the agency and Dr. Jane Goodall.

My pitch being that we would send a message in solar lights to the world on climate change and plastic pollution and make a film about it. The message from those on the expedition – 90 changemakers from 20 countries – in Antarctica was: "Hi World – from Antarctica. Please listen: climate change and plastics are our challenge. Let's change. All of us. Individuals and countries. Stop. Think. Act. Energise. Be the Change. #ClimateForce.” The documentary we produced, Zayed's Antarctic Lights, screened on National Geographic and won a World Medal at the New York Festivals TV and Film Awards. You can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=4jaR1tGZoMo Three years later and fast forward to 2021 – I received a call from Sir Robert Swan and the CEO of the Explorers Passage, Jeff Bonaldi, asking whether I would like to direct the 2022 Antarctic program – the first since 2018. Of course, I said 'yes' and I have just returned from Antarctica, where we led 177 participants from 37 countries to the seventh continent. Robert Swan said: "Winston was the right person for the job. We chose him from among our 4,000 alumni because he has 'got it.' His marine policy work in the Middle East is outstanding. He works hard and gets things done and has that Winston charisma. Winston and the team brought all 177 people together on the ship into one big family. It was our largest expedition yet – twice the size of any before – I was so pleased with how it went. Winston was at the centre of it all and has a very big future." Some insights from the expedition. Antarctica. Magnificent. Beautiful. Colossal. Vast. The grandeur and scale of this lost world is beyond comprehension. Twice the size of Australia. 14,000,000sqkm, you could fit New Zealand in it around 52 times. From the tumultuous waters of the Great Southern Ocean, past the furious fifties and shrieking sixties rises this magical land – the highest continent on earth, which is covered in ice up to 1.9km thick. It towers above the sea,

majestic, with huge glaciers and sheer cliffs guarding its plateaued interior, these giant walls of ice slipping into the sea on occasion with a thunderous roar. The biodiversity is like nothing I have ever seen. The whales, the seals – sleeping and barking and jostling for dominance, the penguins, those loveable creatures whose antics can't help but make one smile. Never have I seen anything like it in 35 years of travel on the world's oceans. Antarctica is magnificent. Its biodiversity is like a portal to another world. On an ecosystem nature-society level, it carries 90% of the world's freshwater. Antarctica is fundamental to the human race's survival. While we were there, three extreme things happened. The Conger Ice Shelf – twice the size of Auckland's urban area, with an approximate surface area of 1,200sq km, collapsed. In East Antarctica, the temperature was 40

degrees warmer than seasonal norms – a record high temperature for that part of Antarctica of -11°C. It rained on us when we were on the Antarctic Peninsula. Looking back to look forward and respond to our changing world: Jacque Cousteau gave the mission to Sir Robert Swan to protect Antarctica, who has, in turn, given that mission to us. And we are up for the challenge. In the words of Sir Robert Swan, "The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it." For me, the journey started in Matakana and has taken me all over the world. Like my Mum and Dad told me at Anchor Bay, Tāwharanui, pushing me into waves during my childhood, "if you don't paddle for the wave, you don't catch it." www.winstoncowie.com www.instagram.com/winston_cowie DISCOVER

A SAUCY SECRET Mangafire is here to add more flavour to Northland. With a vision to share this fiery chillibased aromatic infused oil condiment with those willing to eat outside of the box and elevate their cooking. Stefan from Mangafire launched this business to share the secret of spice. Words Shannen Frear Photos Robinson Studios

Originally from the Bay of Plenty, Stefan met Mangawhai local Ashlee five years ago and not only fell in love with her but the town’s beachy, bach-vibe and atmosphere that reminded him of his roots. Mangafire blossomed through a love of good food and Stefan’s dad’s legacy. He, unfortunately, passed away while the father and son duo were establishing plans of opening their very own restaurant together. Stefan’s dad was a very classy, sophisticated man, super cheeky and clever in the kitchen. Stefan remembers him for pouring chilli oil all over his food. In Stefan’s words, “Southern Italians like spice!”. This brand is derived wholeheartedly from his father’s personality. It’s no bland, plain old business; Mangafire is refined, classy, and full of sauce! After his passing, Stefan set out to create his very own chilli product, just like his father used to make, which family and friends began to appreciate. Soon realising it was time to share this unique idea with more than just his loved ones, but the rest of the

What better place to pioneer and share a product like this than Mangawhai, a spot that this small family adores due to its community vibe, good people, and close-knit culture. Stefan is proud to say his new product is made in Mangawhai. LAGER WITH A BUNCH OF CHARACTER Puhoi Beer is a classic Czech pilsner with a kiwi twist. Inspired by the original Bohemian settlers of Puhoi, Puhoi Beer is a lager with a bunch of character. If they were trying to impress you, they might have crapped on about Puhoi Beer being a mix of NZ and classic Czech noble hops that provide floral, citrusy, and spicy flavours on a light malt base with subtle bready and toasty

characters. But they wouldn’t want to beerbore you, so let’s just say it’s bloody tasty! Puhoi Beer also goes well with sunshine, tall tales, good yarns, and fish ‘n’ chips wrapped in newspaper. Your first one tastes pretty good, and the second’s not bad either. www.puhoibeer.co.nz www.facebook.com/puhoibeer

PUHOI BEER-BRAISED MEAT PIE WITH KUMARA INGREDIENTS

METHOD

• 500g beef rump (diced)

Heat oil in pan, toss beef in seasoned flour and sear beef in batches until coloured. Put to the side. Add onion, garlic smoked paprika and rosemary and cook till soft. Add beer, beef stock, tomato paste and seared beef. Simmer, but not boil, until meat is tender and sauce reduced. Add more Puhoi Beer than the recipe calls for if you think your sauce mix is too reduced or thick – you want your sauce to have a nice gravy consistency.

• 30g flour • 20ml olive oil • 1 onion (finely diced) • 1 clove of garlic • 1 sprig rosemary • 100gms smoked paprika • 1 litre Puhoi Beer • 150ml beef stock • 2 tbsp tomato paste • 1tsp salt + 1tsp pepper • 1 tbsp hot English mustard • 600g golden kumara • 50g butter • 50ml cream • 2 tbsp honey • 2kg of shortcrust pastry handmade or supermarket bought • egg yolk • chopped chives

And any extra beer to enhance the flavour. Be sure to pour yourself a glass as well to enjoy while cooking and allow meat to cool before continuing. Kumara mash: Peel and chop the kumara, then boil till soft, drain and then add the cream and butter. Season with salt and pepper, and fold in the honey. To assemble, cut pastry into rounds and line greased muffin tins; fill to ¾ with cooled beef mix. Spoon or pipe kumara on top to cover. Brush with egg yolk and cook at 180°C until golden. Garnish with finely chopped chives.

IN A SPIN WITH VORTECH 32 years ago, Dave Kay had a hang-gliding accident and during his two weeks in a coma, he experienced a life-changing revelation. Words Luke Williamson

Dave's mission is, "In comprehending and copying nature, we co-create a world of harmony. That was the summary of my out-ofbody experience – that’s what I came back with," he tells me. Dave also found he had a head full of geometrical images and he has spent the subsequent 30 years understanding and building on those images – in this case, inventing a device that replicates nature’s vacuum. He explains, "I’m trying to show a tangible application for what I understand about the functioning of the universe, and the vacuum generator is the first essence of that." Dave has developed a prototype vacuum generator that uses water moving through the device to create a vortex, and the vortex creates a vacuum. "The advantage of using water flow is that it can be a free source of energy. It also doesn’t create waste," says Dave. Unlike current vacuum generators, Dave’s

system has no moving parts and, therefore, no wear and tear. "My prototype may cost $100 to make, but it will last forever and that’s counter-intuitive to the capitalist business model. Current systems rely on selling parts and supplying energy. This is a disruptive technology." Vacuum environments are required for the production of a vast array of products and systems, from microchips and solar energy cells to cars and America’s Cup yachts. Massive vacuum tubes are envisaged for transporting people, inside pods, at high speed – Elon Musk’s proposed ‘Hyperloop’ being an example. One of the biggest hurdles facing these futuristic transport systems is the cost of creating the vacuum. Using green energy to power it would require substantial solar/wind farms, but Dave’s plan is to vastly reduce that cost by using the municipal water system to create the vacuum. ‘Many of these devices could be placed at the head of the reticulated

water system, creating an extreme vacuum with no frictional losses in the water system, and running at no cost, forever. Every time someone turns on a tap, they’re supplying energy to the system. You could evacuate those Hyperloop tubes for free!’ For Dave, the next step is to produce a marketable product. "I need to get finance to move the project forward and to do that I need like-minded people to join me, to put some energy into this system so it can generate something exciting! I can demonstrate it, but I need someone to help me tell the story so we can make it accessible to the world." If this project interests you and you want to know more, get in touch with Dave using the e-mail address below. You can become part of the solution to the crises facing our planet. As Dave says, "We need to follow a different model in order to survive and this project is a step in the right direction." vortech@xtra.co.nz

SEASONAL GARDENING CALENDAR Autumn can linger generously in the North and May still gives you opportunities to finalise winter plantings. It is a good time to think about planting garlic to provide you with a crop for next summer. May is also a great time to have a clean-up in your garden. If you have fruit trees, keep the area under the trees clean and pick up any fruit lying around. This will help reduce guava moth reinfestations. Words Geoff Ledbrook

GARLIC Homegrown garlic can be a real treat to put on your table. The flavour a freshly harvested garlic gives is a just reward for the planning and care you take to grow your own garlic crop. Garlic likes to grow in free-draining soil in a sunny position. It will grow best on its own with just other garlic plants. Garlic does not like weed competition and responds very well to a mulched bed to grow in. Avoid heavy clay soil or very light sandy soil if you can. Traditionally garlic is planted on the shortest day and harvested after the longest day. In our climate, you can plant from May to July, but earlier is often better. Prepare your bed by adding good compost or rotted animal manures. Garlic prefers fertile soil with balanced nitrogen levels. It will grow best in soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0, so if your soil is acid, add lime as part of preparing the growing bed. Garlic will be susceptible to the same diseases as onions, leeks, chives and spring onions. If possible, you will need to plant in soil that has not

grown these plants for the last two years. You can also plant garlic in containers using potting mix. To plant, use good quality cloves either from your own saved seed or NZ garlic seed available readily from garden centres. A bulb of garlic will give you 8 to 10 cloves to plant. Use plump larger cloves if you can and plant them 5cm deep, spaced 15 to 30cm apart. Don’t be tempted to plant them too close even though when you put them in, they will look a little lonely. You should see a green shoot appear in about a month. By early spring, you will have a bed with vigorous green growth in it, almost like a crop of leeks. To care for your crop, keep it weeded and mulched as spring progresses. The bulbs will start forming in late spring and into early summer. They do not need additional feeding once bulb formation starts, as this will encourage too much green growth. Your garlic will benefit, though, from regular watering if the soil begins to dry out in later months.

The garlic you plant should be ready by late December at the earliest. At this time, the tops may not have died down and the bulb is still maturing, but just like many things in your garden, there is no harm in starting to pick as you need to eat it. Leave the rest in the soil until the tops begin to die and turn yellow. This is likely to be in January or early February. To store garlic, hang the bulbs on their stems in a dry airy place like a garage or porch. When the garlic is dry, cut off all but 5cm of stem and make one of those lovely plaits which you can hang in a cool, dark, dry place until you need it. This should give you garlic for many months to come!

The soil temperature will be starting to drop now. Any seeds you are sowing outside will be slower to germinate. Broadbeans, peas, radishes, turnips and carrots can still be sown directly into your garden beds. Carrots will need a warm friable bed and germination may be patchy. Once established, they will grow well over winter, though. The remaining seeds are best sown inside in some sort of propagating house. This can just be a bench or table in a sunny place covered with a plastic cloche.

THE CAPITAL THAT NEVER WAS Alex Stone looks at one historical and visual record of the Mahurangi Inlet. Paul Deacon

Words Alex Stone

It’s little-known that the Mahurangi Inlet – or more specifically Browne’s Bay, opposite where Scotts Landing is now – could have been the new capital of New Zealand. In 1840, Governor Hobson sent Felton Mathew and his wife Sarah Louise to check it out as part of his search for a new capital for the fledgling colony. Mathew reported fulsomely on the sheltered nature of the Mahurangi Harbour, the “profusion of kauri on both shores.” He thought it was “admirably adapted for the site of a town.” Sarah Louise, we’re told, was a “composed, elegantly dressed, slightly haughty woman with appraising eyes. Her diary reveals that she cheerfully endured the most primitive conditions as she went ashore investigating rivers and terrain.” Felton added to his report with typical colonial naivete: “Several Europeans lay claim...to this portion of the country, but their titles, I am informed, are of no value. And even among the [unidentified] native chiefs,

50

ART

a dispute exists as to ownership rights. Therefore, the Government should have no difficulty in taking possession of it! “I did not see the slightest trace of native inhabitants during the time I was in the place.” Matthew reckoned that because several Māori groups claimed “the rights of ownership” at Mahurangi, the Crown could “take possession of it without difficulty”. But in the end, you may recall, they decided on another place in the Waitematā Harbour for their fledgling capital. A year later, a huge block of land around the Mahurangi was bought in the (still contentious) Mahurangi Purchase. The price paid to a group of absentee-landlord rangatira was paltry. Still, Browne’s Bay was the site of the first European settlement in the Auckland region. Captain Downie of HMS Coromandel sounded the harbour for the first time in 1820, labelling it Kyiahou Harbour. In other early documents, Mahurangi was spelled variously as

Mahranga, Mahurangi, Maurhangi, Mourangi, and Mourrangee. The first chart of the harbour, drawn by Frank Cudlip, mate of the kauri-collecting British navy ship HMS Buffalo in January 1834, unimaginatively named (and misspelt) it as Mr Brown’s Establishment. This was the spot that Felton Mathew considered for the site of the colony’s capital. All this is the background to the magnificent paintings on this subject by maritime artist Paul Deacon, one of which was commissioned by Mahurangi Action (or Mahurangi Action Incorporated). Paul has sailed and kayaked extensively in and around the Mahurangi and had a solo art exhibition at Scotts Homestead during the 2009 regatta. This show led to several commissions – one for a painting from Cimino Cole. Paul says, “Cimino and various others

supplied me accurate information and current photographs regarding just where HMS Buffalo would have moored in the deepest point of the channel to receive on board spars from the shore station. Artistic licence did the rest." Paul also consulted two old charts, 'Mahurangi Harbour & Approaches 1849-55' and 'Kiahow Harbour 1834' compiled by the mate of HMS Buffalo, which shows the exact anchorage of the ship.

Buffalo in storm by Paul Deacon

Paul’s further research into the painting included consulting the book HMS Buffalo by the author Robert Sexton, published 1984 in Australia. “An excellent reference book.” The Whitianga Maritime Museum also has a couple of excellent paintings of Paul’s showing HMS Buffalo being wrecked at Whitianga in 1840. So much for history and what it takes to get historical nautical paintings correct. Paul has the last word in the here and now: “Commissions of all nautical requests considered!” pauldeacon53@gmail.com www.pauldeaconnauticalart.co.nz

FROM ANALYTICAL TO ARTIST Originally from Columbia and extremely proud of it, Veronica from Vero Ferrer Art explores her creativity through dots.

In 2018, Veronica was unfortunately diagnosed with breast cancer and decided to take some time off work to recover. This is when she found how much joy painting dots brought to her life! On a trip back to Colombia, the artist, fell in love with a gigantic Lazy Susan covered entirely with dots. Intrigued by this distinctive piece, Veronica decided to enrol in art classes. That is when the journey of Vero Ferrer

blossomed. Considered an analytical and process-oriented individual, the artist never saw herself as overly creative. Dot painting has provided an outlet for Veronica to explore her artistic side; she says she finds the whole process "relaxing and even meditative." Veronica's artistry evolved through a combination of self-teaching, using online resources, taking classes, and constantly practising. She was able to learn the tools of the trade and now works with a variety of mediums, techniques, and mixed media. Always interested in trying something different with art and experimenting with new ways of expressing her imagination, her creations continue to evolve beyond dots. In some pieces, Veronica uses combinations

of vibrant watercolours and intriguing shapes, each with their own distinct form. You can quite easily get lost in the paintings, wandering over the intricate details and originality of the creations. It almost makes you want to pick up a paintbrush and start creating yourself. Veronica offers dot art workshops and private classes via her studio based in Warkworth. This allows her to share her love of creativity with new art enthusiasts in the area. If you would like to explore some Vero Ferrer pieces or enquire about this unique learning opportunity, you can find Vero Ferrer Art on both Facebook and Instagram. www.facebook.com/verosdots www.instagram.com/verosdots

CAPTURING THE BEST OF MAGICAL MANGAWHAI It didn’t take long for Andy and his family to realise that living in Mangawhai was one of the best decisions they had made after moving up from the North Shore two years ago. Photo Elevated Media

Andy owns and runs Elevated Media, a videography company that is a one-stop shop, creating marketing content for local businesses. 80% of everything viewed online today is video and businesses that embrace video find it easier to build trust, increase engagement and generate business from new and existing customers. “I really enjoy the whole process. From coming up with a concept based on the clients' goals to planning the shots, the filming and, finally, the editing.” To Andy, the editing is the really creative part. It’s time-consuming, though and can take up to ten hours to edit a one-minute video! “Promos, video tours, business overviews, explainers, testimonials: They all serve different purposes and help clients at different

stages of the buying journey.” Andy uses ground-based cameras and drones to capture the action. Lighting, teleprompters and audio gear are great for filming interviews and testimonials. The camera gear comes in handy for his other passion, photography. “I feel constantly drawn to the beach and the estuary with my cameras. The Mangawhai area is the most incredible canvas and it feels like therapy for me to head out and capture images in the most creative ways possible.” You’ll most likely see Andy out and about during the golden hour(s), just after sunrise or before sunset. “The light is incredible, soft, warm and low in the sky, providing beautiful shadows and contrast." Orca, sharks, fairy terns and dolphins have

been beautifully photographed by Andy during his visits to Mangawhai. He also captures stunning drone panoramas, made from up to thirty separate images stitched together to capture the beautiful local landscapes. “It was my Dad back in the UK who kept badgering me, saying that my work was good enough to open a gallery, and eventually, I started to believe in myself. Not long after that, the right space opened up in the village and I found a local framer. The puzzle was complete." Elevated Gallery is now open at the Hub, 3/6 Molesworth Drive, Mangawhai. TAI CHI IS A GENTLE WAY OF EXERCISING FOR EVERYONE Photos Marc Herbolet Photography

A desire to leave the busy-ness of Auckland life drove Sonya and her husband to pack up and move to Algies Bay in early 2020. An experienced group exercise instructor, she is now teaching Tai Chi in the area. Recently she introduced Tai Chi Tahi classes at the Leigh Community Hall on Wednesday mornings. The Leigh community has got behind Sonya, with 14 participants attending her first class. Although Tai Chi is her first offering in the Leigh community, she has a broad background in many styles of group exercise, including International Taekwon-Do, which she has practiced for over 20 years. She is a 5th degree Black Belt and former World Cup Champion in this discipline. A serious knee injury sustained during training for an International Taekwon-Do competition influenced Sonya to explore and obtain certifications in teaching Tai Chi as part of her recovery therapy and strength rebuilding.

Beauty inside and out.

“I love the focus Tai Chi requires and that it is such a gentle way of exercising,” she says, “for me, it’s like moving meditation. It’s also a form of exercise that you can participate in at any age, even well into your nineties.” Originally practiced as a Chinese Martial Art, there are many styles of Tai Chi, each with its own features and benefits, yet they all share the same essential principles unique to Tai Chi. • Movement control by moving slowly, smoothly, continuously and with gentle resistance • Body structure through good body alignment and being conscious of weight transference The principle of body structure is why Tai Chi is so good for us as we age, gently improving and maintaining our strength while improving our balance.

Tai Chi can be practiced both standing and seated, with no extra equipment required. There is no minimum level of fitness required. Sonya guides a Beginners Class for those with no previous experience and a general class for those that have experienced Tai Chi before. And for those not able to make it to Leigh Hall on Wednesday mornings, Sonya will soon be starting Tai Chi Tahi classes at the Mahurangi Eastern Community Centre in Snells Beach, on Friday mornings, from 6 May. Sonya looks forward to sharing Tai Chi with our community. Bfitbhealthy@outlook.co.nz | 027 319 5261

HOW TO NURTURE BODY CONFIDENT KIDS You wouldn’t judge a St Bernard for not looking like a whippet, so why do we judge others’ bodies, and our own, for not looking like the ideals portrayed in the media? Words Rachael Wilson

Only 5% of people in NZ genetically have a fashion model’s body shape - and science is starting to demonstrate just how unhealthy it is to strive for a body type that’s not our own. Heavier bodies are not always less healthy than skinnier ones, but it’s an entrenched and complex perception to challenge. A 2016 survey of 4,500 girls aged 10-17 across 13 countries found that only 11% felt comfortable describing themselves as beautiful. A 2012 study of NZ secondary school students reported that 75.5% of young women and 42.3% of young men were worried about gaining weight. Teenage girls in a recent study stated they were more afraid of being fat than they were of nuclear war, cancer or losing both parents. This isn’t just teenage angst. In my clinical practice, children as young as five years of age present with disordered eating and low body confidence. As a paediatric eating disorder dietitian, I believe daring to love your body in modern times is actually a radical act. My work as a family nutritionist and mindfulness coach demonstrates time and again, that dismantling the internal body image critic and replacing it with love and acceptance really is possible – and transformational. Here are some ideas for helping to nurture body confident kids:

1. IT STARTS WITH YOU When was the last time you said something positive about your own body? How we feel and speak about our bodies and other people’s, sets the foundation for our children's body image beliefs. After years of being bombarded by diet culture, our self-talk and body image ideals can be tough to turn around. Catch yourself next time you want to bemoan a muffin top or wobbly thighs. Instead, talk about the function of your body: “My lovely tummy grew my babies.” “My legs carry me around all day without me even thinking about it.” Children absorb what they see and hear. Your self-talk can become a powerful tool to help your child nurture a positive body image.

Look at magazine or social media images together and talk about how they may have been staged or edited until they’re removed from real life. Maybe bring an element of humour to the discussion. Take the perfect ‘beach body’ for example: perhaps you’d have flippers instead of legs, reflective skin to save on sunscreen or even a built-in snorkel! The perfect body is one you enjoy using, not one that’s displayed for other people to look at. www.thefoodtree.co

2. VALUE DIVERSITY Teach your child that bodies come in all different shapes, sizes, colours, ethnicities and abilities and that nobody is better or worse as a result. Diversity simply means individuality. Books and movies can prompt meaningful family discussions about diversity, value and contribution, so consider the media your child consumes. Are they learning that body diversity is normal? Are they seeing that contributing to that diversity is our personal superpower? 3. CHANGE THE NARRATIVE Teach your child to be critical of the unrealistic expectations set by most media.

AQUATIC SUPERHEROES Kawau Coastguard is the quiet saviour in the rescue team. You won’t hear any sirens or see flashing lights when a call comes in. Still, in the background, there is a team of people carefully but purposefully driving to Sandspit Yacht club to carry out their rescue mission. Words Kate Moore

Kawau Coastguard is a 24/7 service made up of of 26 volunteers between the ages of 25-70. It is made up of people who are experienced boaties who wish to give back to their community or people. The unit is split into three crews who rotate weekly. Each member has access to a dedicated app and pager to receive their missions. Paul, who has been a volunteer for five years and is now chair of the Kawau Coastguard, says, “we are not the AA, we won’t fix you, but we will tow you to where you need to be.” He remembers a rescue from earlier in the year where Coast Guard HQ, which is in Mechanics Bay, received a mayday call from the back of Great Barrier. THE POWER OF WELLBEING Clive Elliott QC is an Auckland barrister who has had a place up at Omaha Beach for 24 years. He and his wife Heather regard Omaha and Matakana as their second home. Clive has just published his first mainstream book, “The Power of Wellbeing,” published by Cogent Publishing, in the US. Clive describes how we seem to be beset with so many intractable problems: growing inequality, polarisation, extremism, global warming, and of course, the disruption caused by Covid 19. He tries to join the dots and make sense of what is happening around the world today. He started thinking about writing a book in 2019 after the shock of the Christchurch Mosque shootings. He finished it two years later in the middle of a lockdown. Little did he know that after publishing his book, the disinformation, doubts, and divisions that he wrote about would manifest themselves so painfully in Parliament’s grounds a few weeks ago. Clive’s editor Kate Stone, called the book a “fascinating book-for-the-times!” He observes that, more through luck than good management, she might be right. Do you care about the way society is going and would like to see a better world? Take the unfolding tragedy in Ukraine, for example. Do you see the need to reimagine and rebuild society after the disruption of the last two traumatic years? Clive certainly does. He suggests we need to look back before we look forward to rekindle important underlying values like empathy, reciprocity, and trust. He argues that if we do so, we will realise that we are all connected and dependent on each other. His fundamental point is that if society is to prosper and thrive, we need to work together and in harmony with our fragile and damaged natural world, not as selfish and self-centred individuals but as part of a much wider whole. If these things matter to you and you are interested in finding out more about the book and its key messages, visit the website below or purchase the book from Matakana Village Books. www.cliveelliott.com/the-power-of-wellbeing
