Through the decades
An inspiring, one-of-a-kind wedding dress show, being held on Saturday 20 May at Whangaparaoa College Auditorium, will feature more than 30 wedding dresses from the 1950s to present day. They will be modelled by the original brides themselves or their granddaughters or friends. Fascinating commentary will be given about the influences on bridal fashion over the decades, and personal stories shared, bringing to life each ‘Big Day’.
Organiser Yvonne Payne is a volunteer life-story writer for Harbour Hospice, which provides specialist palliative care, free of charge, to Hibiscus Coast, North Shore and Warkworth/ Wellsford families. Yvonne was inspired to create the show from the stories hospice patients have shared with her over the years, because they made her realise how special the stories around a bride’s wedding dress can be.

Glass Ceiling Arts Collective is an allinclusive performing arts program for both disabled and non-disabled children that supports youth empowerment. They have seven youth theatres throughout the country which makes it accessible geographically, as well as an extremely affordable membership that makes it accessible financially, too.
Charlotte Nightingale is the co-founder and artistic director; herself neurodiverse and also mother to a disabled son. Previously
from Touch Compass, she wanted to offer not just disabled children a platform to express but also non-disabled too, in order to better encourage inclusivity. “So often the groups for disabled children are kept separate, we wanted to create a safe space for all kids – which can include siblings of disabled children as well,” says Charlotte.
Charlotte says that her eventual diagnosis of ADHD liberated her into realising her strengths and weaknesses, that her inability
to focus in the classroom as a child didn’t mean she wasn’t normal, merely that her particular attributes lay elsewhere, specifically in expressing herself through art and dance. “It was a huge weight off my shoulders,” she says. “Some of the most creative people have struggled in their lives, and that’s reassuring.”
As well as opening two new centres, one in Whangārei and one in Christchurch, Glass Ceiling is in the middle of a big project which

focusses on “multi-sensory theatre and film, for people with PMLD (profound multiple learning disabilities)”. For this Charlotte has written a digital work called ‘Spark’, which is about her own child who has a heart condition. The mum is played by actress Jackie Clarke, and her daughter is played by Lily Mae Ivatt-Oakley who was in ‘Down for Love’. Soon to be released, Spark uses multisensory props at various stages throughout the show. “For example, during a dream sequence, Lily Mae’s character is running through a paddock, she’s wet and cold – this will be made sensory for the audience by having ice grated on them using a cheese grater,” says Charlotte.
The plan is to take the show from digital to live in theatres later in the year, with the help of funding from Creative New Zealand, Foundation North, IHC Foundation, and Arts Access Aotearoa.
Glass Ceiling Arts Collective is reclaiming the word Disabled (with a capital D) and wearing it with pride to include all walks of life. Whether it’s physical disabilities, behavioural, neurological or even as a result of poverty, they are redefining the barriers and boundaries that separate ‘us’ from ‘them’, and they’re doing it inclusively. “Society is
what disables us,” says Charlotte. And that’s the point of Glass Ceiling Arts Collective, to en-able those who have been dis-abled by modern societal expectations and outdated models of how we ‘should’ be.
Every year, Glass Ceiling puts on one fullscale theatre production, and this year it’s Cats. Chosen by the young people, they will be involved in all aspects of the show, from performance and music to costumes and behind the scenes. As part of the inclusivity, the aim is to present really high-level performances for low rates that will enable
everyone to enjoy the show, and to then seek out funding for the rest.
Cats will be performed at Warkworth Town Hall from Friday 12 May to Sunday 14 May. Tickets are available through the website under events.
Spark is due to be released via the website and will be free to watch. Th ere wi ll also be a screening at Matakana Cinemas.

Full service history
Trevor Brljevich has achieved a lot in his many years, from a lifetime service for St John ambulance, to being the oldest competitor in the Kaiwaka Top of the Rock event; not to mention being the only New Zealander to have received the Dix Penning award.
After 71 years of living in Maungaturoto, Trevor Brljevich says he’s finally becoming one of the locals. “I came up from Birkenhead to work on my uncle’s farm when I was 21. I didn’t want to go but Dad told me I would only get that sort of opportunity once in my lifetime. They had no family and I was like a son to them, and eventually the farm was left to me, so it was a good decision.
“Do you want to hear a romantic story?” Trevor asks. “I was 27 years old and I said to my brother, ‘It’s time I got married’. I decided I would ask my sister’s friend who had spent a lot of time at our place in Birkenhead. I’d been away six years, but I went around to her place and knocked on the door, and said, ‘Yvonne, do you want to go to the pictures
with me?’ She said no and shut the door. So I went back the second night and asked again, and she said yes. Six days later we were engaged and, a year later, married. We had two children and 47 years together.”
Trevor was a dairy farmer for about 30 years and then ran a successful Limousin beef stud, but eventually sold the farm because of concern over Yvonne’s health. Trevor still lives on three-quarters of an acre which he says was, at one time, “all calla lilies”. Growing flowers, and calla lilies in particular, is a passion of Trevor’s, one he inherited from his father. Trevor is the only New Zealander to have received a Dix Penning Award, given in Holland to acknowledge the world’s best plant breeders. “I just grow them now
as a memorial to my dad and for my own pleasure,” he says. “I told the family I would retire once I’ve bred a blue one.”
Trevor is perhaps best known in his community for his lifetime of service to St John. “I joined St John in 1955 and drove the ambulance in Maungaturoto for 51 years. Yvonne would use a pot and a wooden spoon to let me know I had a call – I could hear it anywhere on the farm. I’m a Commander of the Order, but I had to let the active serv ice go.”
Trevor has tended to many friends and family members over the years, including defibrillating his 92-year-old mother-in-law (who went on to live to 100!), and attending

the famous Brynderwyn bus crash in 1963, which killed 15 people and injured 21. “It was hard to distinguish who was unconscious and who was dead. It was very disturbing, and what I imagine a war scene would be like.” Kaiwaka’s Top of the Rock multisport event is another fond memory for Trevor. “It’s a pity it doesn’t run anymore because I always got a petrol voucher for being the oldest competitor,” he laughs. “I got my photo taken standing right on the very top when I was 80. It was quite scary because I’m not very good at heights.”
A fit and active man, Trevor has taken a hit to his health over the last year. “This cancer thing has made me feel old, but the best part about finishing the chemo is getting back into the garden – it makes me feel alive. I still grow enough to have flowers in the church at Christmas time and keep up some entries in the Paparoa A&P show.” And that’s enough for Trevor for the time being.

The food alchemist
Fabiana
Growing up on a farm in Brazil meant that Fabiana’s upbringing influenced her relationship with food, especially during harvest festival time, her favourite time of the year. But her passion for cooking came later, and by happy accident. Originally trained in journalism, Fabiana studied English in London and was awaiting her delayed highly-skilled workers visa. So in the meantime she began working with a German friend at the world’s first organic pub, The Duke of Cambridge in London, where she did country cooking, such as classic English favourite, pork belly. She loved it and so went on to work in Michelinstarred City Social in London which inspired her to go for her own Michelin star, but she didn’t enjoy the environment that came with such high expectations.
When Fabiana had a child she decided to share her mediterranean-inspired recipes online. She now has an impressive following on Instagram. “I had to develop my own philosophy by listening to how I felt in my environment. I viewed my relationship with my son and family and related that t o food.”
Recently invited by a friend to cook lunch for some Matakana residents, Fabiana
had much to consider, “I take into account the season, and the weather. I develop communication between flavours based on these things. On that day it was raining so I made a warm dish rather than a salad.” Moroccan-inspired and brimming with textures, flavour and colour, it’s also about creating an experience. “It’s like, ‘Hey, I’m here, I’m the roasted pepper’; I find food

brings the most contact for people with themselves. My approach to cooking is to keep the person in the experience – away from their phone or computer. A chef is an alchemist, a wizard, transforming food a nd lives.”
Having only moved to Matakana nine months ago, Fabiana is still finding her feet and making a home for her new family. “My main job is as a mother but I’m already finding Matakana is the perfect spot for my food, as everyone cares so much about it. And each other; they are always offering help.”
Currently only making time for one client a month, by next summer she aims to have gathered a skilled team so that she is able to cater for larger functions and weddings.
Fabiana is cooking for the upcoming Creative Matakana in early May, for which she will be creating food and then explaining what the experience should be, “My way of seeing cooking is always very personal and face to face,” says Fabiana. “Food brings people together and creates memory.” www.instagram.com/Fabiana_Reis_Food

“Don’t expect a big wedding cake!” said Bam, owner of Bam’s Bakery in Warkworth, when she opted for a low-key affair for her own wedding in Taupo, with just close family and friends. “It was such a special, intimate moment between all of us,” Bam says about sharing their ceremony with only 20 guests.
Bam and Kyran quickly became inseparable when they started dating in 2019 and are both self-confessed homebodies. So when it came to their big day it was only fitting that they decided on an out-of-town wedding week,
staying with friends and inviting family to join for their backyard ceremony at the end of t he week.
A relaxing and enjoyable day for all meant minimal decorations; paper lanterns adorned the trees and the couple went foraging for wild flowers to decorate the aisle. The celebrations were self-catered with finger food and drinks after the ceremony, allowing guests to soak in the lush garden surroundings. Bam carried a dried floral arrangement crafted by Jo at The Florist NZ, who supplies florals for all of Bam’s
clients' wedding cakes. “I love it because it’s dried. I get to keep it forever,” Bam says. For her ‘something borrowed’, the bride used her sister's veil to complement her rented wedding dress and enjoyed a special moment with her mum and sister doing a first look before she said I do. The couple enjoyed speeches from their parents, including a beautiful poem, and when the celebrations continued later into the evening they shared some private and emotional speeches with their close friends.

While Bam and Kyran set up their wedding space, a fantail joined them, flitting around the trees all morning. It then returned during the ceremony and stayed in the tree above them for the duration of the ceremony, a special moment they were later told is a sign of g ood luck.
Bam points out that at a larger celebration the couple are hosting at the end of the year, to mark the occasion with all of their family and friends, she will be crafting the best wedding cake they’re ever seen!

Your
Start with a solid foundation
It all begins with your skin. Proper skin preparation is crucial for optimal makeup application. Drinking plenty of water, getting enough sleep, incorporating a manageable skincare regimen, and using SPF are essential for achieving healthy, glowing skin.
Trendy makeup looks
For the upcoming wedding season, we're seeing warm-hued and gold-toned smokey eyes, bronzed cat eyes, iridescent eyes, and neutral-toned eyes. Fresh-faced, dewy looks are in, with velvety skin and rosy,
peachy blush inspired by the Korean beauty trend of blush draping. Luminous, bronzy cheeks and light contouring are also popular, with a nude or rosy lip and a subtle pop of gloss. Think sunkissed iridescent highlights, brushed-out natural brows, smoked liner, and wispy lashes.
Top colours of the season
Autumn tones are in, with chocolatey browns, copper, auburn, rosy pinks, gold, crimson, mulberry, and olive tones. These colours are perfect for creating a warm and inviting atmosphere, whether you're having an indoor or outdoor wedding.
Choosing the perfect makeup look
From neutral to natural no-makeup looks to bold neon hues, soft glam, and everything in between, there is a trend to suit every bride's style. When selecting your wedding makeup, consider your personal preferences and the overall theme of your wedding. Remember to have fun and enjoy the process of choosing the perfect makeup and developing a comfortable relationship between you, your makeup artist, and hairstylist for your final look on your special day.

Fire in the hole
The Barbecue Hut is nestled in down-town Mangawhai Village and has set local food options on fire.
Owner-operators Jeannie "Jea" Davis and Kerren "Kezza" Packer had a dream to create a local food outlet that is a perfect mix of café food, great coffee, and a menu that included wholesome American-style low 'n’ slow barbecue (coal and wood-fired only) with an artisan chilli hot sauce and house-made pickles operation on the side.
"After years of cooking barbecue for large groups of friends, work dos, weddings, and for family functions, the feedback from our guests was often that we should open our own restaurant, so we took that idea and ran with it. Last October we found a local established cafe that was for sale, bought it, rebranded, rejigged the menu, and Th e Barbecue H ut was born," says Jea. The foodie duo are passionate about delivering quality barbecue with a large helping of relaxed atmosphere; and judging from the reviews, that is exactly what they a re achieving.
During the week (7am-2pm) the team dish up low 'n’ slow barbecue lunch boxes with three different barbecue meats plus all the trimmings, delicious barbecue burgers with house-made slaw, succulent pork ribs, frybread hoagie rolls, sweet-treats, scones, an ever-expanding range of gourmet sandwiches, cold and hot drinks.
28 SAVOUR
On Thursday and Friday nights, The Barbecue Hut is open for a dinner service from 5pm until 8pm and is proving to be a big hit with locals and visitors alike. Also available on Thursday and Friday nights are whole cuts of barbecue (including but not limited to; brisket, pulled pork, beef, sliced lamb, succulent pork ribs), and sides by pre-order, pick-up and take home – an ideal option for holiday makers, weekend residents or locals having get-togethers.
Kezza says, "I have been cooking low 'n’ slow barbecue for several decades now, and love the flavour profiles that comes from the perfect balance of quality meats, rubs, a lick of smoke, and the time-taken to breakdown of what is traditionally tough proteins into succulent and tasty offerings." He adds, "Barbecue is more than just food, it is about bringing people together and it's about community, and we are stoked to be able to have introduced this style of food to Mangawhai. The feedback has been off the charts, and is very humbling."
Trusts, Assets and Tax Implications.
Trusts are invaluable asset protection mechanisms, which allow a person to hold property and assets on behalf of another for the good of the beneficiaries.
However, when you’re dealing with transferring assets in or out of a trust, it is important to consider the tax consequences. There needs to be careful planning and structuring, often with your accountant and lawyer working together.

32 ADVERTORIAL
Laser focussed
Owner, Kate Sheehan, is realising her dreams as ECM Tattoo & Body Piercing continues to expand with the recent addition of tooth gems.
The studio offers tattoos, piercing, laser tattoo removal, an exquisite range of jewellery, and now the newly-added tooth gems that are taking Warkworth by storm. The piercing/tooth gem studio itself is really cute and fun and Kate’s passion is obvious as soon as she greets customers at the door.
ECM is welcoming and family friendly with some very cool services available – body piercing, children’s ear piercing, jewellery upgrades, and ear design on silicone ears, to name a few. Even piercing parties!
“It’s become a form of self care for a lot of people,” says Kate. “I have clients who pop in weekly and I’ve been extremely humbled by how far people actually travel to come and experience my services.”
The latest addition, tooth gems, has fast become a thriving service with people coming daily to adorn their teeth with 18k gold charms and Swarovski crystal gems. Delicately bonded to the tooth using dental-grade composite, they leave no damage to the tooth enamel and add an extra bit of sparkle to any smile.
Kate also offers laser tattoo removal, so whether you're wanting fading for cover-up or complete removal, the studio offers that in a safe environment with hi-tech equipment. It also caters for WINZ, for those who need financial support to cover treatment costs.
Then there’s the tattoo studio – the hive of activity that has two fulltime artists, Ethan and Laura, with another artist arriving from the Philippines very soon. The team covers all styles of tattoo from fine line and watercolour to realism, and everything in between.
Walk-in day is every Thursday, with a guest tattooist that comes to join the team from Auckland. Whether you choose from flash available in the studio or come with your own ideas, ECM is a great option if you wake up in the mood for some new ink.
The studio is light and open, with great banter and interaction between the team. Kate’s often popping in and out, eager to see what people are getting done. It’s a fabulous vibe and a real experience.

Businesses can’t grow without positive cashflow. Three tips to improve cashflow:
1. Increase your prices! With inflation and the cost of living creeping up, now is the time to review your prices.
2. Review your Terms of Trade to make sure they’re compliant and have you covered for payment and collection costs.
3. Regularly follow-up debtors to get paid on time. The longer invoices are left without payment, the less chance you have of recovering the debt.

As the owners of NF Construction, they've honed their craftsmanship and design skills over the years, completing six builds for themselves and numerous others for clients. And now they’re enjoying life as a family of four in their functional family home that is a study in restrained elegance.
Their contemporary barn-style abode spans an impressive 400sqm, stretching out long on a semi rural site. Nestled between the bush line and Mangawhai Heads, the exterior of the home is clad in dark weatherboards, which contrast perfectly with the accents of

The Fosters have made the most of the flat outdoor space for family time and a purpose-built office space for Nic, meaning this home truly meets all their needs.
Inside, the ground floor opens to a living area boasting soaring ceilings that trace the 45-degree-angle roofline. The space flows naturally from the kitchen to the dining and lounge areas, and then out to the covered deck. Upstairs, a statement oak staircase crafted by Andrew Lawrie leads to the family bedrooms. Andrew is the craftsman responsible for the home's interior and exterior cedar work as well as custom cabinetry and the much-loved bunks that also feature in the couple's son’s bedroom. level and, understandably, has become the couple’s sanctuary and favourite spot to unwind and relax.
Throughout the home, Sarina has incorporated elements from small New Zealand businesses, giving the interiors a unique touch. From feature resin handles and coat hooks – made to order from The Arc Department – to Made of Tomorrow mirrors which provide the perfect finishing touch in the ensuite and powder room, every detail has been thoughtfully considered.
A carefully curated tile selection in each bathroom made these rooms Sarina’s favourite to design. And while each bathroom has its own unique style they remain tied in with the rest of the house which showcases a colour palette reflective of the natural surroundings and coastal location. Wood elements contrast perfectly with black joinery that sits alongside uniquely-coloured concrete flooring displaying hints of earthy browns amongst the grey. The subtle use of green in furnishings, feature walls and the playroom barn doors, softens the interior of the home which truly is a masterpiece of craftsmanship and design.

Gardening calendar
The connection between your garden and table can be easily disturbed by the change in seasons, bad weather, pests and diseases. All these events can leave holes in your garden production. Sometimes, to keep fresh produce flowing, a change in strategy is needed. One such strategy is to shift indoors and grow a quick-growing green crop. Don’t forget longer-term crops though; it is time to think about getting the garlic planted for harvest in early 2024.
Words Geoff Ledbrook
Microgreens
Quick-growing microgreens and mesclun mixes are brilliant ways to put fresh, healthy greens on the table. A small greenhouse, a warm sunny spot indoors, or a sunny verandah will all work fine.
Microgreens are edible greens grown from all kinds of herb or vegetable seeds. They are harvested only once at around two weeks from sowing when the first set of ‘true leaves’ appear. To establish microgreens, sow seeds into seedling trays or pots. Any potting or seedling mix is okay providing there is adequate drainage. A mix heavy in pumice or rotted sawdust is good, as a lot of the nutrition the microgreens need to grow comes from the seed, especially with larger seeds like peas. About 5cm depth of soil is enough. Sprinkle a generous amount of seed evenly over the container you are using, and cover lightly with more mix (depending on seed size). Use a spray bottle to water and keep moist, but not wet. The initial germination can be in a hot water cupboard or similar, but plenty of sunlight is needed once seeds are germinated.
The choice of varieties to grow as microgreens is extensive, but easy ones to get going with are radish, mustard, rocket, kale, broccoli, peas and watercress. Take note of the germination times for the different seeds; some, like peas, will take much longer to germinate. Radish and mustard will be very quick.
You can take your microgreens a step further to the baby leaf stage or beyond. This will give crops of ‘harvest-more-than-once’ greens, like lettuce, mesclun mix, perpetual spinach, rainbow chard and spinach. Establishment is the same, but use a good potting mix that will supply fertility to the greens once they grow past the initial microgreen stage. You will also need to sow at less density to give each plant more room to grow. A mesclun mix is a great one to try first. This will give you a lot of green variety for the salad bowl at a time when not so much is available from the outside garden.

Fruit/vege of the month: Pumpkin
Pumpkins like a long growing season. They are best planted from October to December for an autumn harvest. Time to maturity varies according to variety, but typically is from 20 to 26 weeks. Harvest your pumpkins when the vine starts to die back leaving the pumpkins exposed. Later in autumn, to assist with ripening, remove some of the foliage
Pumpkin butter
INGREDIENTS
• 1 pumpkin
• 1 cup brown sugar
1 cup water or apple cider
Spices of your choice
First make a pumpkin purée by cutting your pumpkin down the middle. Scoop out the seeds and guts, and set them aside for later.
Place your pumpkin, cut-side down, in a baking dish with about a cup of water, and bake
for about 90 minutes or until the flesh is tender. Then simply scoop out the flesh and puree it in a food processor.
3. Place two cups of your pumpkin purée into a saucepan with a cup of brown sugar and a cup of water or apple cider. From there you can add whatever spices you choose – such as cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and ginger, along with a pinch of salt. Stir all the ingredients together and bring to a boil. Turn down the heat and allow the mixture to simmer for about 25 minutes. Once your pumpkin butter has cooled, store it in a glass jar in the refrigerator and use it for breakfast on toast or biscuits. It makes a great topping for pancakes and oatmeal too.

Aesthetically pleasing
Sarah Larnach is a New Zealand artist whose work will evoke feelings of nostalgia, especially if you like your beer and music with a twist of 1980s vintage.
Words Emily Pattullo
Owners of McLeod’s Brewery, Clayton and Geoff Gwynn, were looking to make their branding more dynamic, so when a family connection put Sarah’s name into the ring as a possible candidate for such a task, what came out of it was surf aesthetics inspired by vintage travel posters. It started in 2015 with posters for McLeod’s Longboarder and Chili Pils, and has since progressed to their cans which now all feature Sarah’s artwork. The collaboration is ongoing with the prolific introduction of new brews by McLeod’s. “Sarah is an

incredibly talented artist but also a fantastic person to work with,” says Clayton.
Sarah takes her inspiration from 1980s vintage; she paints “covetable aesthetics” which she explains inspire the observer to “hold, look at, and explore”. This is something she has achieved very successfully both through her designs for McLeod’s and also copious album covers.
Working in watercolour and digital media, Sarah majored in painting and minored in printmaking at RMIT in Melbourne, where she also met Pip Brown, aka Ladyhawke. The pair flatted together in their early twenties, where alter ego Ladyhawke was born, and Sarah’s journey doing the artwork for her album covers began. An ideal pairing that kicked off the 1980s influence, with Ladyhawke’s music being a revival of the Eighties sound that became popular during the Noughties, Sarah’s work has maintained a similar style, and also caught the eye of another musician; UK a rtist, Passenger.
It was Sarah’s design for Passenger’s 2014 album, Whispers, that earned her a Grammy nomination. The singer wanted a nostalgic design, so Sarah came up with a vintage children’s book-style, a la Enid Blyton, with a pop-up element. Sarah explains that aesthetics are a huge part of her artwork: “I want people to experience ‘climbing in with th eir eyes’.”
Sarah recently directed a photo shoot for Ladyhawke’s latest album, Time Flies, with Argentinian photographer, Lula Cucchiara, and is now working on a new project for Passenger. As well as her ongoing working relationship with McLeod’s, Sarah also does commissioned artwork, all from her hilltop home studio in Titirangi whilst being a mother to her five year-old.

Intrepid marine machine
A bigger and better research vessel at the Goat Island Marine Laboratory will expand and support new and ongoing projects.
Back in the day when Goat Island was the first and only marine reserve in New Zealand (and the world), two scientists from the University of Auckland could be seen bobbing about in a wee plywood rowboat, collecting plankton in a bucket.
They then graduated to a tinnie of the unremarkable kind. The marine biologists studying at the university’s marine research lab at Cape Rodney-Okakari Point Marine Reserve (the official name for Goat Island) have since progressed through a fleet of research vessels – all a tad too small and
under-equipped. But they made do. U ntil now.
Enter Te Kaihōpara (The Explorer), a multimillion-dollar aluminium vessel of the very remarkable kind. The state-of-the-art, supercapable and eminently seaworthy 15.9m power catamaran was built in Whanganui by Q-West Boat Builders Ltd. Te Kaihōpara is all set to make our scientists at Leigh Marine Laboratory proud. For their work is very necessary, and Te Kaihōpara will become a pivotal part of the campaign to
restore the collapsing biodiversity of Tikapa Moana the Hauraki Gulf.
The university’s marine research at the Goat Island laboratory spans a wide repertoire of subjects, including climate change, conservation and restoration, whales and dolphins, microplastics, noise pollution, sea birds, seafloor ecology, aquaculture, kelp and kina, as well as the economic benefits of m arine reserves.
Te Kaihopara will support projects such as researching:
• The resilience of kelp and the effectiveness of large-scale kina removals for restoring kelp forests.
• How boat noise stresses snapper and whales, and more widely the role of underwater sound in the Gulf.
• Effects of climate change, such as invasive sea urchins, and new methods for checking the health of the marine environment at scale.
• Feeding groups of whales, dolphins, seabirds and rays.
• Habitat use and interactions of large marine animals.
• Potential for carbon storage in coastal ecosystems.

The work schedule of Te Kaihōpara, and the planning of it, will ultimately be the responsibility of Professor Simon Thrush, director of the University’s Institute of Marine Science. The skipper of Te Kaihōpara is Brady Doak, son of legendary Kiwi underwater explorer Wade Doak.
With the ability to accommodate eight people aboard for offshore passages of up to 25 days Te Kaihōpara is built to explore far beyond the confines of the Hauraki Gulf – from Manawatāwhi (Three Kings Islands) in the north to as far south as Kaikoura and Greymouth. But mostly, the boat will be working locally and will become a familiar
sight for Hibiscus Coast boaties. Please pay attention to the ‘Divers Down’ flag which no doubt will be frequently flying.
Te Kaihōpara replaces the previous 15-metre RV Hawere research vessel (which was able to support six people for up to a week at sea), and will complement the inshore work of the lab’s fleet of smaller (less than 6m) outboardpowered boats.
Working out of Goat Island, Te Kaihōpara will help highlight the urgent need for more marine reserves in the Hauraki Gulf, such as one planned for Waiheke Island.

Creative companionship
MenzShed Waipu is a haven for men who are looking for company and friendship, and enjoy being involved in projects that help the community.
Words Luke Williamson
There are a number of basic rules for members of MenzShed Waipu, but the stated last and most important is, “Please bring a good sense of humour and lots of interesting stories to share. There is a lot of good-natured banter in the Shed and a lot of lasting friendships are made here,” according to the secretary, Grant Erp. Incorporated in 2016, the Shed provides a haven for men who are looking for company, purpose and a congenial atmosphere. Men who have recently experienced retirement, redundancy, bereavement or illness can find themselves missing male company, and MenzShed makes it a priority to fulfil that need. And, of course, they have lots of great equipment for working on projects.
“We currently have 34 members, ranging in age from 56 to 89, and they come from a huge variety of backgrounds. We welcome new members and the best time to visit is 10am on Tuesday when we sit down to have our customary morning tea, and share ideas and a bit of banter,” says Grant.
The Shed is open every Tuesday, 9am-12pm, and members work on a range of personal and community projects which include bench seats, stage props, rat and stoat traps, penguin nesting boxes and repairs to local heritage buildings. “There’s always plenty to do,” laughs Grant.
While MenzShed is currently located in the old community hall at 42 The Centre, Waipu, the challenge ahead is to find a new location before May 2024 when their lease comes to an end. “With this project of finding a new shed, we’ll have to start applying for grants and looking for generous locals who want to help us,” says Grant. “We’re looking at three options for relocation, but we’ll probably have to raise a couple of hundred thousand dollars to do it. If there’s a benefactor out there who would like to donate some money to the MenzShed, we would be willing recipients. We are going to keep going because the guys love the MenzShed and it’s a necessary part of this community.”
So, if anyone is looking to spend some quality time with some good mates, and love helping out in the community, whilst also having the opportunity and equipment to work on some builds of their own, MenzShed Waipu could be ideal. Visit the website or just drop in for morning tea on Tuesday – all welcome.

Museum & Heritage
Waipu Scottish Migration Museum
The Waipu Scottish Migration Museum is proud of its reputation as one of New Zealand’s best small museums. Its 'double migration' story, told through a variety of interactive exhibits, shows how almost 1,000 Gaelic-speaking Highland Scots journeyed from the harsh conditions of post-Culloden Scotland to Nova Scotia and then, how their 'search for paradise' brought them to Waipu in 1854.
The Museum maintains a database of over 100,000 people, recording the genealogy of descendants of the original settlers. There is also a gift shop with a great range of products.
Hours: Everyday 10am-4pm.

The Big Bike Film Night
Thursday 4 May, 7.50pm, Monday 29 May, 6pm Matakana Cinemas
The Big Bike Film Night is back in Matakana for its ninth year, showcasing a hand-picked selection of international and New Zealand cycling films. Curated by Taupō-based ‘Film Pedlar’, Brett Cotter, the festival promises to be a treat for all cycling enthusiasts. The 2023 collection features ten diverse and captivating films, including a world premiere and a strong contingent of Kiwi films.
One of the highlights of this year's festival is the world premiere of ‘Return to Dillon Cone’, a film set and shot in the rugged coastal Kaikōura ranges. The film follows a team of adventurers who attempt to reach an unridden peak accessible only by river, taking on the jagged gorges of the Clarence River by packraft and travelling by mountain bike in their pursuit of summiting the steep shingle-laid slopes of Dillon Cone.
The festival also features a visually stunning film set in postcard Tuscany, following a 74-year-old cyclist whose spirit personifies cycling. Other films include a young Australian bikepacker sharing lessons from her scenic trip to Hell, two schools offering insights into how they promote active transport, and a tale of a rider exploring interior Iceland.
“The power of storytelling is at the forefront of what we offer, and the belief that the humble bicycle can improve our health, inspire and uplift people with where it can take us; connecting communities with stories that captivate us, stories that make us think, and most importantly of all, inspiring us to get out and ride,” says Cotter.
Don't miss out on this feast of short films celebrating the joy and adventure of cycling.
