Transparent energy solutions for Kiwi homes

Recently launched tech company, Ahiko, offers New Zealanders guidance and perspective on usage and price data transparency problems, ensuring every household gets energy solutions that are right for them. So how can you benefit?

Founded by Matakana local, Phil Metcalfe, and colleague, Stephen Dewar, this duo is disrupting the electricity sector by putting the power back in the hands of consumers. Built to provide independent, secure and trusted energy analysis for N ew Zealande rs, Ahiko makes understanding your energy consumption and analysing your co sts effortless.

Meeting four years ago, the pair instantly formed a connection having both lived and worked for multiple large tech corporations overseas, Phil in Australia and the USA, and Stephen in Hong Kong. In this challenging economic climate and having both recently built new homes, the pair became acutely aware of the unprecedented headwinds facing New Zealanders when it comes to the cost and transparency of their energy usage. Combining their shared product management and engineering skills, their passion to solve this problem has resulted in a platform that tackles these challenges at a time when it couldn’t be more important.

There are 1.9 million households in New Zealand facing several challenges and concerns. Growing concern about the environmental impact of traditional energy sources such as coal, oil and gas is leading to a desire for cleaner, more sustainable alternatives. Complex structures of monthly electricity bills, hidden charges, and difficulties understanding electricity tariffs and price increases is causing confusion and frustration. And power outages, especially

in rural areas or during the increasing amount of severe weather events, are causing disruptions and inconvenience for households across New Zealand.

Ahiko creates a personalised report to solve the problem of uncertainty and inefficiency in understanding a property's electricity usage and monthly electricity bill. “Many customers don’t realise that, by law, electricity providers must allow access to a minimum of two years of their usage data,” notes Stephen.

Given permission to access the data on a customer's behalf, Ahiko will provide the three most cost-effective electricity plans based on a household's usage patterns. Unlike other comparison services, Ahiko is completely independent and does not make affiliate revenue or receive kickbacks from any of the electricity retailers for promoting their plans.

Extending beyond simple household energy plan comparison, Ahiko’s report can also

help New Zealanders understand the impact large energy purchases will have on their monthly power bill. For example, what the energy usage might be after purchasing an electric vehicle, installing a spa pool or adding solar panels with a battery to a household.

With a clear vision of sharing and ensuring best outcomes for Kiwi households, Phil and Stephen are focussed on their goal of getting Ahiko’s capabilities in the hands of those who can use it for positive change, including other businesses. “Ahiko is the only energy insights platform available in the New Zealand market, empowering businesses across the energy ecosystem to optimise their operations effectively,” says Phil.

Ahiko is designed to make a manual process easy for consumers while offering the opportunity to save money in the process. With a one-off personalised report and a subscription option available it’s as simple as sending an email today.

Life in music - Andy Lynch

Hailing from a musical family, Andy Lynch has toured the globe playing guitar with bands Zed, Atlas and The Feelers. We asked him about his musical experience so far and relocating to his five-acre haven in Warkworth.

You’ve had a varied and successful career, can you tell us about it and your experiences?

I started out playing acoustic guitar and piano at age nine. My first performance was at primary school playing Christmas carols that year. Two years later my parents bought me an electric guitar, and it changed my life.

I was obsessed. I discovered Led Zeppelin, Guns n Roses, Bob Marley, and many more. One record in particular I discovered in mum and dad’s record collection when I was 13, The Best of Cat Stevens on vinyl - I loved it, little did I know until I looked at the credits, that they were both in his band throughout the ‘70s! Suzanne Lynch was his backing singer, and Bruce Lynch the bass player. Suzanne was one half of the Chicks in the ‘60s and Bruce went on to become a record producer for many artists, including Dave Dobbyn’s Loyal album and Slice of Heaven.

Years were spent furiously practising in my bedroom. I formed bands with many friends from high school at Takapuna Grammar, and later at Rangitoto College. In 1999 I went to the Musicians Institute in Hollywood for a year to study music, which was an eye opener, followed by a stint living in Brazil where I discovered Latin Music, Bossa Nova and Jazz.

I then joined Zed who were signed to Universal Records and we hit the road after the success of Renegade Fighter and Glorafilia, hundreds of shows, Platinum Records and many miles travelled. At the age of 22, we did our first big tour through Australia and New Zealand opening for Coldplay, then Robbie Williams. We went straight on to the United States to record our second album and then relocated to Germany as a base to tour Europe.

One memorable experience was being flown to New York to audition for Sting’s new band. I had four days to learn all the songs. I got to play with the band he had at the time and sing backing vocals alongside him, which was terrifying! He was a wonderful human, and we had some good chats about Brazil. When you hear him sing without a microphone next to you warming up, it’s q uite something.

How has this shaped you and what is it you most enjoy about being involved in the music industry?

I’m extremely grateful for the experiences I’ve had travelling up and down Aotearoa and around the globe the last 25 years with Zed, Atlas and The Feelers. One of the best parts is meeting people from different countries and walks of life, with music being an international language.

The highlights, there are so many. From looking out at 50,000 people smiling when you’re performing is something I can't describe, to crashing a Go Kart with Chris Martin from Coldplay, and hanging out with Slash from Guns n Roses at his house in Hollywood. Also listening to Robbie Williams vent backstage in Melbourne about how the catering didn’t provide him with potatoes before h is show!

But the most rewarding thing has been the life experience and the enjoyment that comes from creating something, writing songs, and performing.

What prompted your move to the area and what impact has this had on your career?

The time was right to leave Auckland and we have family up here - Ross, Laura and Ashley Lynch from Warkworth Vets, which is more famous than me, everyone knows the Lynch’s!

Moving here has been fantastic, after living out of a suitcase half of my life, the quiet in the hills is wonderful. I’ve met many new friends and locals, and now instead of just tending to cats, it’s sheep and all sorts of critters.

Nothing has really changed except I can make more noise up here in the studio with neighbours miles away compared to in Auckland, and it takes longer to get to the airport to catch a flight to a show!

Tell us about your plans for your Warkworth based studio.

Nathan King, the lead singer from Zed, and I have been running Hum Studios for the last 12 years, producing and writing music and sound design for TV and radio commercials, films and TV shows. The original studio was based on the North Shore, the new one in Warkworth is nearly complete, and Nathan has one in Auckland. We are very active with this, you’ll hear our work all the time on the TV, from the theme song for Lotto, Fair Go, 7 Sharp, The Warriors, we’ve done a ll sorts.

What I’m adding to the mix is passing on my knowledge and experience by offering mentoring and tutoring out of the studio here. I hope to create a teaching hub with other tutors on piano, drums, bass and vocals for the Rodney area.

Celestial festival

A three-day festival, three stages, 31 acts, including DJs, performers, live music, yoga, breathwork, meditation and Qigong, and of course a wedding ceremony. Wendy and Brett celebrated their wedding with 300 guests in attendance and personal touches co-created by 85 plus people from their community. A celestial festival with a framework intention of love, connection and oneness, guests gathered to explore these themes while an ethereal aesthetic was created with extensive use of fabrics, from golds in lounging areas to cobalt blues in ceremonial spaces, and at night creative lighting and lasers.

First meeting when Wendy was working as Advertising Executive for Junction Magazine and Brett reached out to advertise his Create Matakana gallery/co-working space, the pair were always going to have a unique wedding. Having collaborated with Brooke Tyson for years she was the obvious choice to make Wendy’s custom dress, which was never going to be traditional white. Brooke also lent her expertise to Brett's Japanese Kimono inspired ensemble while the groom teamed up with his father, local Matakana jeweller John Crockett, to design his exquisite Larimar crown. Wendy's headpiece, crafted by the talented jeweller Mia Straka, and earrings, designed by the amazing Jessica Aggrey of Aggrey Jewellery, completed her ensemble, along with hair and makeup by award-winning artist Verity Griffiths.

Flourishing ventures

Having spent her childhood visiting Point Wells, florist Wendy Hart and her husband Richard dreamed of raising their children amidst its idyllic charm. Over the last 25 years, they cherished their waterside Point Wells bach, until two years ago when they decided to deepen their ties to the beloved community.

Selling their property, they relocated further down Omaha Flats Road, and now prioritise this serene locale over their urban abode in Auckland. Nestled on seven acres, abundant with fruit trees and fertile land (perfect for growing her beloved flowers), the property has ignited Wendy's entrepreneurial spirit with the promise of new business ventures. After bidding farewell to her renowned Auckland florist shop, Flowers After Hours, following a thirty-year legacy, retirement wasn't in Wendy's cards. Fuelled by a wealth of creative energy, she has embarked on a new endeavour: Studio Hart – a venture echoing her enduring love for all things aesthetically pleasing.

The couple’s orange orchard first sparked the genesis of Citron & Barrow, crafting dehydrated citrus slices to enliven cocktails. Forest Floor emerged next, offering contemporary potpourri sourced from forests both nearby and far-flung. Their driveway stall at 144 Omaha Flats Road has become a bustling marketplace for these delights, alongside seasonal fruits and beautifully arranged fresh flowers.

Circling back to her floral passion, Wendy has also launched Village Roots, specialising in floral styling across the Matakana region. "After 35 years in the game, my flower obsession is as strong as ever,” enthuses Wendy. “Selling flowers at the end of our driveway was a natural progression and then

when I was asked to do the flowers for a local wedding, I thought why not?”

That one wedding has since turned into many, and Wendy now offers her floral expertise to events of all sizes. From intimate birthday celebrations to corporate gatherings and fairy-tale weddings, Wendy injects her signature magic. She emphasises the importance of understanding her clients' visions, leveraging her expertise to deliver unparalleled value no matter what th e budget.

“I love capturing someone’s vision and watching it evolve into something magical. I am all about creating a wow factor even if there’s a tight budget. I’d say my superpower

20 BRIDAL

is being able to offer stylish, elegant and beautiful florals without breaking the bank. Luxury doesn’t need to be exorbitant,” s he asserts.

Beyond floral design, Wendy’s vision extends to Forest Floor's expansion later this year into beautifully scented candles and elegant wardrobe fresheners. But that’s not all –amidst her busy schedule, plans are already underway to refurbish the barn on their property into a haven for floral enthusiasts. The transformed space will feature a retail florist and gift store, offering freshly grown blooms from her land or sourced from the market, and also a space for hosting floral workshops and events.

“We envision it as a beautiful space where locals can immerse themselves in a creative hub surrounded by flowers,” Wendy explains. “I’m already growing a range of blooms such as hydrangeas, dahlias, tropical foliage, delphiniums and sweet peas, with plans for an even broader selection next year,” says Wendy. Additionally, an online store will provide the convenience of purchasing blooms and gifts from the comfort of home. With Wendy’s diverse offerings and creative talent, the community is lucky to have her creative spirit in their midst.

Say it with beers

Ever wondered what to get someone who is difficult to buy for?

From personal to corporate gifts and business product promotions, the applications are endless with Colab Brewing’s unique personalisation tool.

After purchasing Colab Brewing and moving its operations to Warkworth in 2020, Heidi and Martyn Crockett built an entirely new brewing facility. Specialising in six core beers - US Lager, Kiwi-style Draught, American Pale Ale (APA), XPA (Extra Pale Ale), West Coast IPA, Hazy NEIPA (New England IPA) - with the addition of seasonal flavours to spice up their offering, the couple were looking for something more to set them apart from other great local brewers.

And so the concept for ‘Say it with Beers’ came about. Previously the idea of personalised cans would have involved a large batch of contract brewed beer, which Colab can also do, however the small and nimble nature of the business allows Colab Brewing greater flexibility; making it possible to run off a batch of beer with customised artwork displayed on the can.

Colab’s innovative solution gives individuals and businesses alike the opportunity to

customise beer cans with logos, messages, or any desired image. And size doesn’t matter, with a minimum order of one dozen of any single beer style. Whether you opt for a mixed pack of up to six different beers or choose to focus on just a couple of varieties, the process remains seamless - choose the beer, design the label, Colab will print it and roll it on.

Crafting personalised labels is facilitated via the ‘Say it with Beers’ website, with the ability to upload images and graphics from both mobile devices and computers, and easily add personalised text. Upon completion, within ten working days of placing an order, the beers are neatly packaged in two sixpack boxes, ideal for sharing with friends, colleagues, or event attendees, and shipped New Zealand wide, with the exception of Waiheke Island.

Colab’s 'Say it with Beers' offers a unique and personalised touch to any occasion and showcases the innovative and creative concepts being produced right here in the local community. www.SayItWithBeers.co.nz hello@SayItWithBeers.co.nz

Gardening calendar

Over these last few weeks of Autumn, gardens are well and truly winding down, although our mild temperatures do allow the garden to keep growing (albeit slowly) through the cooler months. Even though it’s tempting to curl up inside with a good book, there are plenty of tasks still to be done to get your garden in good shape to survive during winter and thrive come Spring.

This month's gardening calendar with a focus on flowers is brought to you by local flower lover Lisa Bindon from My Patch. Growing selections of specialist cut flower seedlings, making it simple for you to grow your own cutting patch.

Words Lisa Bindon | www.MyPatch.co.nz

Plant

Now is the perfect time to plant out hardyannual flower seedlings, so they can spend the next few months developing a good root system and be ready to take off as soon as the weather warms up. This includes snapdragons, larkspur, campanula, Bells of Ireland and Iceland poppies. If you want flowers tall enough to cut, make sure you choose the right varieties. Most hardware stores sell predominantly short bedding plants, so don’t get caught out. If you’ve missed starting your plants from seed in time, seedlings are available from My Patch.

Prepare

Dahlia lovers - if you are lifting your tubers this season, now is the time to prepare them. Cut the stems down to about 20cm, and leave them for a few weeks before lifting.

If you have new tulip bulbs to plant, they should still be chilling in the fridge. To get long stems on your tulips in our mild climate, don’t plant them until June, or even July.

Great bed preparation is the key to a great crop of Spring sweet peas, which can be planted now. Dig a deep trench of compost for them to get their roots down into.

Pick or pot

While most annual flowers will be finished, there is still beauty to be found in the garden which can be picked and brought inside. Proteas are in full bloom, and pair nicely with all the different types of robust foliage available at this time of year. Try a combination of magnolia, twisted willow, eucalyptus, leucadendrons, and grevillea. If your garden is too small for shrubby foliage, find a spot for a bright little pot of winter annuals for a pop of colour. Now is a great time to plant up your pots with pansies, violas, lobelia, and alyssum.

Top Tips

In May there is an abundance of free ‘garden gold’ lying around to be collected - Autumn leaves! Use them to mulch garden beds, add to your compost bin or simply store them in heaps to decompose. Try spreading them on your lawn first and mow over them (with a catcher). This helps speed up their conversion into useful organic matter by chopping them up smaller, and mixing them with a little ‘green matter’. To keep the weeds at bay over winter, it’s a good idea to cover any empty space in your garden with mulch, autumn leaves, or cardboard, or you could also plant a winter cover crop.

Embracing heritage, crafting future

Nestled gracefully on a crest along the stunning Matakana coast, this exceptional property seamlessly blends heritage charm and modern luxury. Run as a high-end boutique lodge for many years, this hardworking house needed transforming into a home. What began as Pat's modest wish for a heated towel rail blossomed into a grand vision encompassing a butler's pantry, radiant skylights, and expansive living spaces as the couple embarked on a year-long planning phase; ensuring thoughtful consideration for the home's history and the legacy of its original owners, Teresa and Marshall.

The installation of six majestic VELUX skylights added much needed light and warmth, while the removal of windows and doors welcomed the breathtaking vistas of Pakiri and Te Arai into every room. “It's now almost impossible not to see the views from every room in the house, including the ensuite shower,” says Ginny. The removal of a bedroom and bathroom, an easy choice when you still have seven to spare, and the strategic removal of several walls, forged interconnected spaces that embrace the ebb and flow of family life.

With the house laid bare, a new hallway and staircase improved the flow, while a showstopping kitchen became the heart of the home. Showcasing local craftsmanship and materials, the kitchen, built by Bespoke

The natural landscape is further enriched by the craftsmanship of two expansive stone retaining walls, each stone meticulously placed to ensure both visual beauty and structural integrity, enhancing the property's solidity and expanding the usable lawn area. Complementing this, an outdoor fireplace and living space, masterfully conceived by local artisans, offers a sun-kissed retreat for family enjoyment that again captures the unforgettable views. These remarkable features are further complemented by a helicopter landing pad at the end of t he garden.

Having lived, worked and travelled all over the world, the couple believes a more stunning location than Rodney Road would be hard to find. Having fallen in love with the local community, Pat and Ginny are now planning their next adventure, a new-build on the same road. “We always felt this was a magical place, and now the rest of the world sees its magic too.” With views to Omaha and Auckland on the southern slope and views all the way to Whangarei Heads, Hen and Chicken Islands and the Barrier on the northern side, with native bush peeking through in all the spots that don't have sea views, Te Wairua and its location truly are one-of-a-kind.

Bridging the gap between mainstream and natural health

Based in the heart of Mangawhai, Elevate by Zoe Jaques promises to revolutionise your approach to wellness, offering an alternative for those seeking a holistic pathway to health.

Growing up in the Kaiwaka/Mangawhai region and completing a pharmacy degree at Otago University, Zoe's career initially led her through various roles in the pharmacy industry. Yet, despite her successes, Zoe felt frustrated by the limitations of her role as a pharmacist and was motivated to follow her passion for hol istic health.

With a sense of disillusionment surrounding her experience with the mainstream medical approach to health and driven by her keen interest in exploring natural health options, Zoe embarked on a new path. Drawing inspiration from her own health journey, she pursued further studies in natural health, obtaining a nutrition certificate followed by a degree in naturopathy.

With a holistic approach, Naturopathy focuses on identifying and addressing the root cause of imbalances in the body, utilising the healing power of nature through herbal medicine, nutrition, and high-quality supplements when required.

It was during this transformative period that Elevate came to life. Balancing her naturopathy studies online and her duties as a pharmacist, Zoe recognised the need for accessible natural health solutions in her local community. Elevate seeks to fill this gap by offering personalised naturopathic consultations and a commitment to holistic healing.

Ministry for the Environment’s Environmental Hero of the YearNicola MacDonald

As a member of several governance bodies, Nicola MacDonald is also Chief Executive of the Ngati Manuhiri Settlement Trust, Chair of the Auckland Conservation Board and Co-chair of the Hauraki Gulf Forum. This year she has been honoured with another title - winner of the 2024 Ministry for the Environment Environmental Hero of the Year Te Toa Taiao o te Tau award. A dedicated conservationist, Nicola's approach embodies the essence of kaitiakitanga – safeguarding our environment for future generations.

“Where

Congratulations on winning Environmental Hero of the Year. What does this win mean to you?

Thank you very much! Being named Te Toa Taiao o te Tau / Environmental Hero of the Year is a humbling recognition of the collective efforts dedicated to Ngāti Manuhiri Settlement Trust ’s environmental conservation. It emphasises the importance of our work and inspires me to continue advocating for the safeguarding of our environment for our tangata whenua and future generations.

Tell us about your path to being involved in conservation work.

My journey into conservation work began with my grandparents, who lived by the Maramataka. I recall their first teachings being to look after the land, and seas, and to be respectful—they were very humble people. My grandmother was a market gardener who practised whakawhanaungatanga when planting (similar to companion planting today). My grandfather, who served in the Māori Battalion in WW 2, was a fisherman who fished by the lunar calendar, and taught me (as we’d go out on the boat together) to look after Tangaroa’s children.

In 2012, Ngāti Manuhiri achieved and settled their Treaty Settl ement with the Crown, which led to the establishment of the Ngāti Man uhiri Settlement Trust. I started working with the Trust as an advisor in 2017, and became the Chief Executive in 2019. It’s a privilege to hold this role and support our Trust to accomplish actions that help protect and restore te taiao. I am also Chair of the Auckland Conservation

Board and Pou Taiao (representing the 19 mana whenua of Tāmaki Makaurau), co-chair of the Hauraki Gulf Forum, and previously was Chair of the Aotea Conservation Board. I am a member of several governance bodies including the Māori Women’s Welfare League and the climate change platform Oho Mauri Trust. I have always believed in a holistic approach to conservation work rooted in kaitiakitanga and above all, l walk my talk, hīkoi te kōrero.

How do your diverse range of roles impact your role as a conservationist?

The variety of roles that I hold gives me a broad understanding of issues across our rohe and beyond. It also allows me to hear about solutions and identify opportunities to collaborate, whether that is with rangers from Te Papa Atawhai (Department of Conservation) or University academics. There are a vast array of innovative solutions to the challenges we face in our environment and the best results come when those with the pūtea (funding) trust and enable grassroots communities to use their specialised, localised knowledge to inform environmental responses. I’m not just a governance expert and environmental strategist, I’m a practitioner of kaitiakitanga and believe it is my duty to use my position to elevate mana whenua voices at decision making tables.

What are your proudest conservation achievements to date?

There are multiple conservation achievements that I am extremely proud of to date. I led the deployment of the world’s largest shellfish bed restoration (150 tonnes of kuta/mussels) in the Hauraki Gulf. I have participated in and planted over 350,000 trees in the

Mahurangi to combat the impacts of climate change. I am a coresearcher on mātauranga Māori methods to use natural fibres to replace plastic ropes used for kutai/mussel spat and I led the pest eradication of Rakitu Island which is the last pest-free island in the Gulf. I have developed the first dedicated native fish and endangered species sanctuary in Tāmaki, and I authorised and carried out the first removal and elimination protocol of caulerpa at Iris Shoal near Kawau Island. Recently I also presented to the Environment Select Committee at Parliament on the Trust’s views for increased marine protected areas in Te Moananui-ā-Toi/Hauraki G ulf.

What projects are you focussed on for 2024?

It will be clear from previous answers that one initiative I am extremely passionate about is the eradication of exotic caulerpa, the invasive seaweed colonising our seabeds and disrupting our delicate marine ecosystem. We wasted no time in tackling the removal of caulerpa when it was discovered near Kawau Island in July 2023. We funded experts from California to join us here in support of our work, created collateral to share in our rohe to help people easily understand and identify caulerpa, and we use our boats to patrol the wai. I’m particularly proud of our rangatahi who are a part of Mahere Ārai Moana Raumati (our summer programme which sits under our wider oceans strategy, Te Au ō Moana), and patrol our waters in Te Moananui-ā-Toi, surveying for caulerpa and raising awareness ab out this threat by talking to locals and boaties. We continue to work on a comprehensive and community-focused plan to eradicate this invasive seaweed and protect Te Moananui-ā-Toi/The Hauraki Gulf t o ensu re the health and preservation of our waters for generations to come.

The gift of lasting memories

Kiwi charity, TimeOut, connects generous holiday homeowners willing to donate a stay in their property to a person diagnosed with a terminal illness. This invaluable opportunity allows family and friends to spend quality time together and create special memories that last a lifetime.

In 2013, charity founder Ronda Amende was diagnosed with a rare cancer and given 12 months to live. Ronda was determined to fight her illness and began a three-year battle with chemotherapy, beating her cancer into remission. With so much heartbreak and uncertainty during this trying time, a chance gesture from a work colleague provided much-needed relief - some time away at a family holiday home. Inspired by the gratitude she felt, Ronda wanted other families in need to have this same experience and the idea for TimeOut was born.

Today, TimeOut is grateful and proud to have over 160 holiday homes on offer from generous Kiwis. Typically, owners donate outside of peak holiday periods,

offering 1-2 stays annually, each lasting 2-6 nights. Ranging from private bach owners to commercial accommodation providers, a diverse group donate stays across the country; giving people in need and their families the chance to create special memories together.

Last year, TimeOut organised holiday stays for 117 families; 15 of which were thanks to the generous support of holiday home donors located in the Junction Magazine region. With the area being in such high demand, TimeOut would love to be able to expand their network of accommodation and encourage you to reach out and le arn more.

Rural luxury meets urban proximity

A remarkable journey of resilience and adventure culminates in an unforgettable off-grid glamping experience nestled in a secluded grove of mature Kauri forest, just 12 minutes north of Matakana.

Tim and Annie Barry’s journey to opening Kourataki Farm Cabins began in 2020 when they purchased a picturesque piece of land just before the onset of a global lockdown. With visions of building their forever home for their growing family, including twins on the way, the Barrys embarked on a journey that would lead them to create something truly special. As construction on their dream home commenced, the idea of adding cabins to provide temporary accommodation for their weekend visits from Auckland during the building process emerged. In a bold move, they decided to forego their rental property in Ponsonby and relocate with their four boys to the cabins for the remainder of the build, braving the elements and unforeseen challenges along the way.

Despite facing the wettest summer on record and their planned timeline of three months stretching to five months, the cabins served them well amidst the storm, weathering the cyclones with unwavering resilience and not a single leak. For the Barry family, this experience became not just a means to an end but a transformative journey that strengthened their bonds and became the greatest adventure they’ve had as a family.

Now, Tim and Annie Barry want to share the magic of Kourataki Farm Cabins. Set on their 60-acre farm in Leigh, these fully furnished cabins offer an unparalleled off-grid glamping experience. Accommodating up to eight guests comfortably, the cabins boast

lit boardwalks connecting to bathroom facilities, a charming deck, and an outdoor BBQ area for dining under the stars.

Just a short drive from Matakana, guests have easy access to an array of activities, from beach outings to vineyard tours and more. Yet, for those seeking solace in the immersion of nature, the serenity of the farm environment provides the perfect retreat. Set up with families and couples in mind, and longer term stays also welcomed, Kourataki Farm Cabins promise more than just accommodation; they offer an incomparable experience that will inspire and invigorate th e soul.

Auckland Council Pump Track

2024 | Warkworth Showgrounds

Warkworth Showgrounds is the latest recipient of a portable pump track owned by Auckland Council that makes its way around the region’s towns. Having arrived in early February it will stay for a year.

The pump track, situated in the netball courts, is a circuit of rollers and banked turns and the idea is that you generate momentum by using up and down motions with your legs and body to roll over the track.

The local community have been relishing the fun that is to be had on the track, with all ages making the most of it. The track has easy sections and harder ones so it can be used by scooters, skateboards, skates, bikes and wheelchairs.

Local skater, Lu Phillips, has been encouraging kids to give skateboarding a go, helping locals with tips and seeing kids gain confidence while learning new skateboarding skills. Mahurangi Community Sport & Recreation Collective have a project underway to build on the community support for this type of activity.
