10 years of Summer Sessions

This year, owners Matt and Natasha Craig are excited to celebrate 10 years of their surf shop in Matakana. It all began when they sold their surf school in Costa Rica and opened Matakana Beach Outfitters with a focus on SUP’s and wetsuits. Now Summer Sessions is a vibrant cornerstone of the Matakana community, located between Ringawera Bakery and the Tram Car Café; a one stop shop for all things beach. A lot has changed for Matt and Natasha over the years, however, one thing that hasn’t is their commitment to the local community providing After School Surf Lessons, prizes for Matakana Primary School’s Sports Star of the week, and continuous support to local fundraising efforts. Most recently, Summer Sessions hosted a free Hopscotch competition for kids outside their doors with winners receiving Santa Cruz posters. www.SummerSessions.co.nz | matt@SummerSessions.co.nz

From Warkworth rides to global competitions In the world of mountain biking, where rugged trails and adrenaline rushes define the sport, one young woman from Warkworth, is taking her talent international. George Swift is a determined and adventurous rider who has turned her passion into a global pursuit, competing in the 2023 Mountain Bike Enduro World Series. Wo rd s Ni k i t a O l iv e r Me t c a l f e

Hailing from Warkworth, George embarked on her biking journey in 2019 with the Dome Valley Mountain Bike group. Little did she know that these early rides would shape her path to becoming a rising star in the world of mountain biking. The pivotal moment came in 2022 when, with much encouragement from her local riding group, she decided to make the bold move to Nelson, renowned as the ultimate training ground for mountain biking in the country. The move to Nelson transformed her riding skills, pushing her to new heights. It wasn't long before she made a significant mark in the mountain biking world, finishing as the runner-up in the first-ever Enduro MTB Championship in New Zealand in March of this year. With that achievement under her belt, she set her sights on an even greater challenge: racing in the Mountain Bike Enduro World Series, a global competition comprising

seven rounds across the globe. To qualify for this prestigious event, she needed to accumulate enough qualifying points from local races in New Zealand. Thanks to her podium finishes and determination, she secured her spot among the world's elite. Competing on the international stage has been unchartered territory for George. Racing at this level has required self-sufficiency, with no teams to rely on. Depending on the support of local businesses and her own fundraising efforts to make her dream a reality, she hopes to secure sponsorship for future endeavours. Enduro mountain biking is a unique discipline where riders tackle multiple timed stages

over a day. Starting from a race village at the base of a mountain, riders pedal uphill to the start of each stage, with specific start times for each. Timing begins at the start of a stage and stops when they cross the finish line. The rider with the lowest overall time at the end of the day emerges as the winner. George’s journey has taken her to farflung locations, from the rugged terrains of Tasmania, Australia, to the picturesque Mediterranean coast in Finale Ligure, Italy. Despite challenging conditions, ranging from torrential rain to 30 degree heat, and fierce competition from European riders, she’s held her own, finishing consistently well in each race.

Basing herself in the UK for the duration of the series, George has had the opportunity to compete in some local races between stages. Taking top honours in two separate races, including the prestigious Ard Rock in the Yorkshire Dales, the UK’s biggest event with over 3,500 people competing in different classes. As well as winning her category, George came out with the overall win for the fastest female. These victories boosted her confidence and helped her prepare for the final two European races in France. In Loudenvielle, near the Spanish border, she delivered a stellar performance, finishing 7th overall and elevating her ranking to 15th in the series. The final race in Châtel, France saw George finish 19th, earning her an overall ranking of 16th in the world for Elite Women in Enduro. An incredible achievement from our intrepid Kiwi cyclist whose determination and tenacity has taken her from Warkworth to world rankings. Her rise to the global stage at only 25 years old is a testament to the power of pursuing one's passion. Reach out to George if you’d like to help her continue this remarkable journey. www.facebook.com/George.Swift.96 www.instagram.com/GeorgeSwift_212

Matakana The Matakana Cycle Trail stretches from Matakana to Omaha Beach, with a detour to Point Wells. Perfect for families, this two-way track accommodates runners, walkers, and cyclists, featuring delightful stops for coffee, ice cream, or even wine tasting along the way.

Walks of wonder

Omaha

Discover the best in local walking adventures and enjoy wanderlust close to home.

Embark on a rewarding challenge with the Quarry Loop, nestled at the southern end of Omaha Beach. Ascend 130 steps to the summit, where breathtaking views of Omaha Bay and beyond await.

Tawharanui

Warkworth Parry Kauri Park encompasses 8.5 hectares of dense native bush that has thrived for thousands of years. Offering a variety of loop tracks, ranging from 10 to 45 minutes in duration, these walks are suitable for the entire family.

At Tawharanui, you’ll discover seven signposted walks commencing from either Anchor Bay or the Lagoon, catering to various energy levels – for details visit the Information site near Anchor Bay. Among the favourites is the Ecology track, a loop walk starting from Anchor Bay, taking around 40 minutes to an hour.

Kowhai Park, situated at the southern end of Warkworth near Hill Street, offers picturesque trails with some elevated boardwalks and paths to protect against kauri dieback, allowing visitors to explore the mossy kilns dating back to 1884.

Mangawhai

Mahurangi Peninsula Within Scandrett Regional Park, there are two primary loop tracks that guide you through a blend of historical and presentday farmland. The Kawau Bay Track and the Mullet Point Track, each about an hour in duration, offer breathtaking vistas that stretch back along the bay. In addition to the main loops, several shorter tracks within the park lead to captivating lookouts, historical sites, and even a brief trail that leads you to the neighbouring Martins Bay.

Located on the southern slopes of the Brynderwyn Hills, a series of diverse loop tracks await. Accessible from Kings Road, just before Mangawhai Heads, the trails offer two options after crossing the swing bridge: the Tanekaha Forest Track and the Tanekaha Falls Track. The Forest Track rewards you with stunning views of Mangawhai and the rural landscape below. On the Falls Track, you’ll encounter three waterfalls, each more spectacular than the last. Enjoy both tracks for a thrilling 4.5 hour loop.

You’ll discover a diverse range of activities and environments to explore and enjoy; including the Milky Way Glow Worm Cave.

It all started when the family bought the land in February 2018, living in a tent on the property for the first six months. Inspired by the family's love of the natural environment and seeing the wellbeing that people get from being within nature, they started on the project of a lifetime. Five years later, with the help of their staff, they’ve developed the infrastructure required to establish a one-ofa-kind destination. The couple's shared vision and combined skills have been harnessed to develop their Farm Park. Ian has a background in Outdoor Education and Instruction, in abseiling, rock climbing, bush craft and caving. He also has 16 years experience in environmental work, including reforestation, landscaping and environmental consultation. Ian is involved in Cave Search and Rescue and for the last four years has led cave rescue training on their property and the surrounding area. Cindy has worked for over 18 years as a Paediatric Occupational Therapist and is also teacher trained. She recently trained as a ChildCentred Play Therapist and is focussed on working with children who have experienced trauma and need support for their healing;

which is done within nature with the farm animals on their land. Ian and Cindy have protected 120 acres in a QEII covenant and manage 300 bait stations on the property, which has led to an increase in bird and insect life. They have fenced waterways and bush areas, removing livestock from the streams, wetlands and bush, which has led to a vast increase in understory regrowth of native bush. The 320 acre Farm Park is more than half covered in native bush and home to ten kilometres of walking tracks plus farm roads for biking. Waipu Caves Farm Park offers campgrounds for tenting and motorhomes, with an area especially for schools, scouts and youth groups. You can explore and swim in the beautiful rocky bottomed stream and there are natural limestone cliffs for abseiling and rock climbing. Campers can use the Burma trail, orienteering and hut building areas as well as archery by prior arrangement. As a Farm Park, you’ll also find goats, lambs, calves and pigs that have been hand reared on the farm and love receiving pats. The Milky Way Glow Worm Cave, a well

kept secret until its opening earlier this year, is a guided tour about an hour long. Walk through beautiful native bush with naturally sculpted limestone rocks, then down some steps into the cave and along a concrete path. The tour gives people an amazing experience of safely entering the underworld, rich in cave formations such as stalactites, stalagmites and flow stones. With lights off, you get to see New Zealand’s world-famous glow worms and learn about their life cycle. During the tour, guides teach you about cave conservation, its geology and ecology. Plus it’s one of the few guided cave tours where you may take photos. Ian, Cindy and Jade look forward to hosting you at Waipu Cave Farm Park! www.WaipuCaves.nz | 09 430 2722

Dress up your condiments selection After decades of providing fresh, natural meals as a chef, predominantly in France and Italy, Lara Hayes immediately saw a gap in the market upon returning home to New Zealand. Where were the premium salad dressings, condiments and vinaigrettes made with healthy seed oils and zero nasties or refined sugars? A Bit Dressy was established in 2020 with a dressings range that has now expanded to include hearty soups and beneficial bone broths in winter, with refreshing chilled summer soups soon to be added to the offering. Our stunning Kiwi produce and the sharing of good food is Lara’s inspiration and she is driven to support local suppliers. A Bit Dressy has recently relocated from Auckland to Leigh and are loving local life with their new weekly spot at the Matakana Village Farmers’ Market. Always passionate about quality ingredients, nutritional value, freshness and seasonality, Lara has been enjoying the abundance of local suppliers now available to her. Spray-free vegetables like watercress and zucchini are sourced from Matakana Chillies, and Salt River Farms provide beets, carrots, coriander, kale and more. Monaghans food service in Warkworth and Matakana Butchery are her go to’s for meat marrow bones and chicken frames while a selection of herbs come straight from her own and friends' gardens. All much loved over the years, and born out of her previous life cooking for private clients locally and overseas, you'll find some beloved classics in the range plus some innovative recipes of Lara’s own. Her best selling Chicken, Veggie and Barley Soup is ‘just like grandma used to make’ and evokes feelings of nostalgia for her customers. While the latest best seller, Keto Spicy Thai Chicken Soup is influenced by an intensive professional cheffing course Lara completed in Koh Samui years ago, where she made 60 dishes in six days! Lara’s flavours, despite using local ingredients, will take you on a journey around the world. From Divine Beef Borscht, perfected during her days cheffing for Russian oligarchs, to Broccoli and Stilton Cheese Soup, a favourite from her London cheffing days, and Tuscan Cannellini Bean Soup inspired by her time in Italy; you’re sure to find a broth, dressing, sauce or soup to tantalise your taste buds. Sustainability is important to Lara, not wanting to use plastic sachets she packages everything in glass jars and bottles, meaning customers can keep them to use in their own pantry or return them to her market stall for a 50 cent refund. All tags, labels and carry bags are also recyclable. With an abundance of vegan and keto options available and corporate gift boxes, perfect for Christmas, A Bit Dressy is a unique foodie offering. Starting at the Grey Lynn Farmers' Market over three years ago you’ll now find Lara weekly at her new spot at the Matakana Village Farmers’ Market; fully stocked with A Bit Dressy products and fresh tastings for you to try. Order online for local and North Island weekly deliveries and keep your eyes peeled as A Bit Dressy branches into local retailers very soon! www.ABitDressy.co.nz | www.instagram.com/ABitDressy

Crafting culinary excellence beyond borders Ranked an impressive eleventh worldwide on TripAdvisor's 2023 Travellers' Choice Best of the Best Restaurants list, The Grove, nestled in the vibrant St. Patrick's Square of Auckland, is undeniably a culinary gem. What makes this establishment even more remarkable is their ability to bring the fine dining experience directly to your doorstep through 'The Grove At Home.' Wo rd s Ni k i t a O l iv e r Me t c a l f e

The story of The Grove begins with Michael and Annette Dearth, a culinary duo whose journey unfolded amidst the bustling culinary scene of San Francisco. Their voyage through the hospitality industry, evolving from bartender and waiter to fine dining experts and experienced sommeliers, shaped their culinary philosophy. The duo resided in the picturesque wine country of Sonoma Valley, blending their roles as farmers during the day and sommeliers by night. Nurturing the land and witnessing the full garden to table process shaped their appreciation and passion for the industry. A backpacking adventure in New Zealand left an indelible mark on Michael’s heart, he says “the country was calling me and I answered the call.” The couple made the move two decades ago, fueled by dreams of establishing their own restaurant. In 2004, The Grove opened its doors, an embodiment of their philosophy: an urban oasis, where 'grove' symbolises a nurtured piece of land to cultivate produce. Over the years, The Grove has been touted with numerous awards and graced by talented chefs and passionate individuals, evolving into the prestigious establishment it is today; all with Michael and Annette passionately at the helm. The recent induction of Matakana-based head chef Cory Campbell has further elevated The Grove's gastronomic journey. After meeting and talking with Cory, Michael had already decided the job was his with all three of his previous head chefs having alliterative names; “it was a sign!” he says. Whether serving homemade pasta at Baduzzi, the couple's second restaurant, or an elegant eight-course degustation at The Grove, Michael and Annette always strive to celebrate excellence, working closely with their chefs while affording them creative freedom. With his culinary prowess honed at Vue Du Monde in Melbourne and Noma in Copenhagen, Cory Campbell brings a new dimension to this legacy of excellence.

Olive oil for the win Sally and Derek Holland have been involved in the olive oil business since 1998, growing, harvesting and marketing their own extra virgin olive oil. After 25 years working in the EVOO industry in New Zealand they continue to gain recognition for their talents, as their latest win for Duck Creek Olive Oil reflects.

Originally based on Waiheke Island, as well as their olive oil business the couple grew their own wine, which had a great following, and offered fine accommodation which was a standout in the wedding market. After eleven years of residing at Duck Creek Olive Grove, Derek and Sally have created a breathtaking environment for themselves. Their grove has been beautifully crafted and nestled in park-like grounds where the grove is consistently producing high quality extra virgin olive oil. Their multi awarded olive oil has a strong following, and rightly so. Not only for its taste but also for its healthy high polyphenol content, Duck Creek Olive Oil continues to be a fan favourite. They have consistently won top awards from the industry and are active members of New Zealand Olives and Oliveti New Zealand. A much deserved win this year, Sally and Derek took out the Northern Oliveti Trophy for Best in Show and Best in Class; the third time in the history of the cup they’ve been awarded this honour. They also won silver for their single variety this year for New Zealand. Carefully harvested annually with pruning completed slowly and carefully over the spring period, the grove is constantly evolving with the different varieties harvested. Some years see certain varieties not harvested, owing to the pruning the year before, while other varieties are singled out for use for processing. This year's harvest was a single vanity used, other years it can be a blended achievement. Only the best fruit is picked for processing and even then the fruit is strictly quality controlled prior to processing.

With Christmas just around the corner, now is the time to give this wonderful oil as a gift. Having catered for ten years to the high end corporate market and premium brand vehicle dealerships, Sally can personalise your gift for your family or friends. Orders can be picked up from the grove or for those out of town a courier delivery is offered. Healthy Caramel Slice This healthy caramel slice is a delicious no-bake dessert made from an almond coconut base and topped with a date peanut butter caramel. If you love healthier treats naturally sweetened with wholesome ingredients, this is the best caramel slice you will ever make! Recipe by The Conscious Plant Kitchen

Instructions: Shortbread Layer

Ingredients: Shortbread Crust

Cover a 9-inch x 5-inch slice pan, or an 8-inch x 8-inch baking pan, with parchment paper and let enough paper hang off the sides of the pan so you can easily pull out the slice later. Set aside.

In a mixing bowl, add: desiccated coconut, almond flour, maple syrup, and melted coconut oil.

Stir with a spatula first, then squeeze with your hand to make sure all the ingredients come together and stick together. It can be slightly crumbly, but that's ok. If it's very dry, add an extra tablespoon of coconut oil.

Press the shortbread crumble tightly onto the prepared baking dish.

Freeze for 10 minutes while you are making the caramel layer. The freezer hardens the coconut oil and firm up the shortbread without baking.

Caramel Filling •

In a food processor, add pitted dates, fresh runny peanut butter, melted coconut oil, water, maple syrup, salt, and vanilla.

3T maple syrup

Process on high speed, until a sticky thick caramel paste forms. You may have to stop the food processor once in a while, scrape down the sides of the bowl and repeat until all the ingredients form a consistent thick date paste.

Healthy Date Caramel Layer

Pour the caramel paste in the pan, press with a silicone spatula into an even layer.

Return the slice tin to the freezer for 10 minutes while you melt the chocolate.

1 cup almond flour (or oat flour) 1 cup desiccated coconut

1/3 cup coconut oil (melted)

1 ¼ cup medjool dates (pitted)

1/3T maple syrup (or agave syrup, coconut nectar, rice syrup)

Chocolate Layer •

Melt the dark chocolate with coconut oil, in a microwave safe bowl, in 30-second bursts, stirring to prevent the chocolate from burning.

2T coconut oil

Drizzle the melted chocolate all over the bar and return to the freezer for 12-15 minutes to harden the chocolate.

1t vanilla extract

Remove the slice pan from the freezer, and pull out the bar from the pan using the overhanging pieces of parchment paper.

Cut into 16 squares and enjoy!

1/3 cup peanut butter (unsalted, no added sugar, no added oil) 2T water ¼t salt

Chocolate Topping

85g dark chocolate 1T coconut oil

Storage •

Store the healthy caramel slices in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two weeks, or freeze for up to one month and thaw in the fridge for a few hours before serving.

Hilltop haven In the idyllic countryside of Hakaru, just outside of Mangawhai, stands a striking testament to sustainable living and innovative architecture – the Smith’s family home, aptly named Hilltop. Wo rd s Mi l ly No l a n

Situated on four-and-a-half-acres, Hilltop has been a labour of love for Nick and Shannon and their two young sons. The journey began seven years ago when they acquired the land, which included the neighbouring house. Determined to bring their unique vision to life, the Smiths embarked on a subdivision project that would eventually lead to the creation of their dream home which they moved into two years ago. Nick, a seasoned builder and the owner of Smith Construction, played a pivotal role in bringing their vision into reality. “We knew what we wanted and we put a lot of thought and time into the planning of the

house, before employing Warren Perry from Perry Architecture & Design to help refine the concept and bring it to life,” says Nick. “We wanted it to be a fully functioning family home that was both robust and inviting.”

the countertops are crafted from neolith

The result is a breathtaking combination of refined rusticity, featuring an array of organic materials, including steel, timber and concrete. Sustainability was a major priority throughout the construction process for Nick and Shannon, with a focus on repurposing and upcycling materials wherever possible. For instance, salvaged bricks from Auckland’s iconic Real Groovy Records store now adorn the kitchen, while

and Kauri inlays provides a harmonious

porcelain. The internal walls of the house

are made from recycled Rimu roof sarking that has weathered over eighty years,

while polished concrete floors with Rimu connection between the use of different

Every detail of the four-bedroom house, from the kitchen cabinetry by Mangawhai Design to the repurposed materials, reflects the couple’s dedication to creating a home that is both unique and welcoming. Nick acknowledges that their taste might be seen as quirky, but to them, it’s an expression of their personality. Even the custom-made steel range hoods in the kitchen bear the mark of uniqueness, handfinished with a blowtorch to create a striking blue-steel patina. One of the standout features of Hilltop is its open-plan design and abundant floor-to-ceiling windows. This design not only floods the interior with natural light but also blurs the boundaries between indoors and the breathtaking natural surroundings. Oriented strategically to bask in the warmth of the northern sun, Hilltop is a sunny and welcoming abode to both live in, and for friends and family to visit. Offering the family the best of coastal living, the property comes replete with panoramic rural views and an array of amenities, including a swimming pool, spa, vegetable gardens, a sprawling lawn and a lush paddock surrounded by native bush – an endless adventure playground for their two boys. Operating locally for 12 years, Smith Construction’s specialty is building high quality architectural homes, predominantly for clients in Mangawhai, Langs Beach and Waipu. Nick’s dedication to workmanship and nurturing strong client relationships, along with his dedicated team, has propelled the business to great success. “For me, a partnership can begin very early in the process even down to helping select land packages,” says Nick. “From the initial concept stage right throughout the build process I liaise closely with architects and designers, along with project management right through to landscaping advice and the smooth handover of keys.” www.SmithConstruction.co.nz

She extends her creative spirit into a charming shop, Hazel Hunt Furniture and Art, where visitors can immerse themselves in an array of artistic offerings. From exquisite chandeliers, leather chairs and coffee tables, to carefully curated artwork and more, her shop is a haven for art and decor enthusiasts. omaha beach -the elixir of life! At 82 it’s understandable that the retirement home beckons, but John Winkie, a self confessed two wheeled fanatic, plans to ride there on his new 255 kph, Aprilia 660 RS Superbike. The bike takes pride of place in the spacious garage at 102 Mangatawhiri Road, a stunning architectural award winning home that John and his Wife Maria built. They have spent 17 very happy years there. “ I love the openness and comfort of the home,” says John. The whole family joins us for Christmas every year. They say that loneliness is the problem with old age but you will never have that problem living in Omaha.” Maria loves the separate upstairs master suite where you can

look out over beautiful Omaha towards Little Barrier and beyond. With Golf course access from the huge 968 sqm section it’s a dream property with a dream location. But John’s passion has always been of the two wheeled kind. Having 15 Patents to his name, John was the initial pioneer of the twist out release pedal system, now adopted by virtually all pedal manufacturers. He still has his trusty original Ducket Superlite racing bike, bought second-hand in 1953. And is a world champion Mountain Biker having won gold and two silvers at the World Masters. When he’s not racing the Aprilia at Hampton Downs, John pedals his way around Omaha,

Tawharanui and Matakana at least twice a week. So, what’s the secret to living life to the full into your eighties? “Buying 102 Mangatawhiri Road, of course!” 102 Mangatawhiri Road is due to be sold at Auction, unless sold prior. Scan QR code below for details.

Art with purpose Filani Macassey is a Northland artist based in Kaiwaka. Having decided to downsize and relocate to Kaiwaka seven years ago, what was a necessity at the time Macassey says “ has become an opportunity to be part of a diverse community.” Photos Ellie Smith

The artist’s dad was a sheep farmer from the South Island who lived in Fiji during the mid-sixties. This is where he met Filani’s mother who was from the Island of Kadavu in Fiji. During the 1960s, Suva, Fiji’s capital, was an interesting and vibrant cosmopolitan centre; the perfect antidote for a post-war generation. “Dad was definitely escaping the aftermath of a tragic family event, and also perhaps the death of his younger brother during the second world war.” It seems that the artist has invariably looked

at the concept of what war is about to inspire further creative projects. In 2007 Filani graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Elam School of Fine Arts in conjunction with Contemporary Art and Art History papers at Auckland University. Achieving this milestone put the artist in the mindset of not producing art just for art's sake. “Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate art for art’s sake. There is nothing like painting, drawing, sculpting, or capturing an image for the pure pleasure of doing so. But I need to take it somewhere else. This is

a concept that cannot be answered easily when people ask me what type of art I do,” she says. Macassey’s current project involves a campaign through Arts Foundation, New Zealand. This is a crowdfunding boosted campaign with high stakes. It is all or nothing. Filani will be continuing her research into two WW2 RNZAF pilots, with this part of her campaign titled ‘Lithography on Fijian Masi’. She will eventually put an exhibition together around the theme of WW2 pilots to

Artists in this field tend to either look for sponsorship and/or spend a lot of their own hard-earned wages to realise their projects. “The initial stage is the challenging bit, bringing people and a community on board to support a project takes a lot of work. The actual art making is yet another aspect towards the development of a project. It really is not for the faint of heart,” Filani says. To support Filani visit Boosted at the link below. The protection of assets that we have worked so hard to acquire is an important consideration for most people. Spreading the joy one stitch at a time he Joy Make Club was launched T in May of this year by wife and husband duo, Marnie and Steve Hillier from their homebase in Waipu. Introducing you to the world of knitting with colourful, fun and locally produced at-home knit kits. During the sale of her previous women’s empowerment t-shirt brand, Ms Marnie, mum-of-three (soon to be four) Marnie, was introduced to knitting by her bestie who lives in Sydney. Immediately hooked, Marnie wanted to support local businesses rather than buying from the big international knit kit brands, but was surprised to find she was out of luck when it came to anyone doing super chunky yarn in bold and bright colours with fashion-forward patterns. Experiencing first-hand not only the immense satisfaction in learning a new skill as an adult, the joys of knitting one’s very first project and also the overwhelm that comes with diving into the bottomless well of the online learn-to-knit world; Marnie knew at once that her next passion project and business baby was going to be bringing the accessibility and fun of beginner knit kits to Kiwis.

To feed my soul and my sense of wellbeing I always start my day at dawn, waking to the birds and the sun. I then flush my mouth with water, clean my tongue with a tongue scraper, and have a cup or two of warm water with 1tsp of Daily Organics apple cider vinegar. I try to take the next 15-20 minutes for my own morning practice, whether it is a gentle stretch, a brisk walk or a yoga session. I consciously try to connect my breath to whatever movement I am able to fit into that timeframe. This sets my mind up for the day (like a foundational building block) so that I remain calm throughout and plan my nutritious food for the day ahead.

Find an exercise or movement you enjoy. For me, that is Reformer Pilates. I love that it's a great workout but you also simultaneously improve your mobility and flexibility, as well as build strength. So find your thing, whether it is yoga, pilates, surfing, weights, gym classes it doesn’t matter, as long as it makes you feel good. And then start, don’t make excuses. It is also super important to make your movement of choice part of your routine and weekly schedule. If you want to see results, commitment is key with any kind of fitness.

I like to begin the day with a glass of water, at least 500ml and I aim for at least 2.4L per day. For a nourishing fibre rich breakfast I enjoy overnight oats with chia, fresh fruit, seeds, and yoghurt. I always aim for around 30g of protein per meal as this helps reduce snacking, keeps my energy and metabolism up sustainably, and is also key for weight management. In summer, I love eating salads with extra virgin olive oil, which is incredibly anti-inflammatory. Lastly, I aim to create space for at least 40 minutes per day to reset and rebalance the nervous system - my preference is a mindful walk along the beach.

From the first signs of spring my energy levels seem to increase daily and even the thought of summer and what it brings is mentally uplifting for me. With the extra daylight hours and better weather I like to start each day with an early morning walk. It’s important to soak up the natural sources of vitamin D through diet and getting outdoors as much as possible. I do Reformer Pilates classes at BodyRe twice a week and I also follow an at-home wall Pilates program, which I find very beneficial. In summer I always have my swimming togs and towel in the boot of my car so I can take a dip in the ocean after work.

Breathe, move and drink water. Movement of any kind is just as valuable as exercise. Explore with different movements throughout your day - swing your arms, hang from a door frame, sit on the floor and play with getting up with no hands, walk backwards, brush your teeth with the opposite hand. This all encourages neuroplasticity: the brain’s ability to change, reorganise, or grow neural networks. Challenge your nervous system with hot and cold therapy, a warm bath and cold shower, or the more extreme sauna and ice bath. Learn a new breath technique such as Wim Hof and Buteyko breathing, or find the time to be still and listen to the movement your breath creates in your body.

Springtime is when we emerge from our wintering and often excitedly leap forth with enthusiasm and gusto. As a result, I often see a lot of people in spring with injuries from overdoing things like exercise or gardening. With the additional load that the approaching silly season brings people can become frazzled, stressed and overworked, both in their body and mind. Moderation should be your aim in springtime. Go easy and leave some fuel in the tank to enjoy the new year and summer fun. www.BodyRe.co.nz

Ancient wisdom for modern lives The expansive perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM ) creates room for alternative pathways to health goals. Combined with the latest research and evidence-based practices, Good Bodies, a TCM clinic in Matakana, combines the best of ancient and modern wisdom.

TCM doesn’t always align with the science of biomedicine, yet it is precisely the grey area where the two come together that most intrigues Caity Ellett, founder of Good Bodies. At the core of TCM is a principle called ‘Treating the Shen’, which means looking after a person’s spirit or heart. After a few bumpy years, it’s no surprise that a lot of people are feeling depleted; muscle tension, difficulty sleeping, digestive changes, unusual mood fluctuations, or a weakened immune system can all be signs of acute or even chronic stress. ‘Treating the Shen’ is one of the ways TCM approaches stress and health differently – treatment offers proactive support for those daily stresses that can leave us physically vulnerable. People often come to complementary healthcare providers after not getting the desired results from conventional treatment, whether in pursuit of support for a medical condition, or dealing with the frustration of an injury. Caity’s treatment approach is flexible, gentle and hands-on, providing physical processes to get to the root of health concerns and promote symptom improvement, as well as offering a relaxing and nourishing space to pause and rest. Those who have been injured in an accident will also be happy to know that TCM treatments are funded by ACC. Caity has seen an increase in the numbers of teens and kids struggling with physical, emotional, and situational challenges,

which can leave them vulnerable to stress and overwhelm. However, young people have the benefit of abundant Yang Qi (life energy, the good stuff!), which is why they tend to respond quickly to acupuncture. Caity is particularly sensitive to the young (and not-so-young) who experience needle phobia. Her treatments often include fewer needles for those testing the water, or no needles at all, with a range of deliciously unpokey options. Pregnant people preparing for birth or postpartum bodies in the process of recovering are also utilising acupuncture and other TCM treatments more and more. TCM can assist with many of the challenges of growing a small human, bringing that human into the world and recovering and replenishing post birth. Caity’s approach offers nurturing and safe options for aspiring and new parents. Life is a long journey, which is often reflected in the state of our bodies. Caity founded Good Bodies to offer care and support through the inevitable ups and downs of our long road home. www.GoodBodiesTCM.com GoodBodiesTCM@gmail.com

Salty Susan has you covered this summer A kiwi summer can be relentless, the sun is scorching and the water is deliciously warm. Although it’s a gorgeous combination and epitomises a kiwi summer, UV rays and salt water can be damaging for your skin and hair.

Orla spent her whole life in the ocean, not too concerned about the long-term effects that it was having on her hair. Until about three years ago when she realised something needed to change; her hair was damaged, brittle and dull. After spending many hours looking for a product that would protect her hair from her love of the ocean without causing any harm to the place she loved so much, she wound up with zero results. With a background in medicinal medicine and plant based skincare she thought, why not create something myself; and with that Salty Susan was born - good for your hair and the planet! At first the process involved lots of trial and error and feedback. There were successes along the way and also lessons learned, but Orla slowly perfected her first product, Ocean Hair Rehab. The spray is designed to nourish, protect, strengthen and detangle your hair after spending time in the ocean. It was an instant hit, especially within the wahine surf community in New Zealand. After the success of this first product, the Salty Susan range has gradually expanded to now include hair growth oils, repair oils, shampoo and more.

As a bonus many of these plants are not ones you will find easily on the supermarket shelves. Their presence on the kitchen table may pleasantly surprise you though. Seeds are available for a range of not so commonly grown plants like artichoke, cape gooseberry, tomatillo, celeriac, kohlrabi, kiwano, bitter melon, okra, pepino and salsify. Plant Peanuts Along with the banana, the humble peanut is a favourite in many Kiwi households. The good news is that with the warm and lengthy growing season our region offers, planting a few peanut plants is not as silly as it sounds. The peanut, a native of South America, is not a nut at all. It is a legume which will add nitrogen back to the soil and increase garden diversity. Some garden centres may stock ready to plant peanut plants, otherwise you will need to find seed peanuts. Talk to your local garden centre or turn to Google as there are viable seeds to germinate out there in New Zealand. Plant one or two seeds in a small to medium pot with any kind of potting mix. Use the ‘bury twice as deep as the seed size’ rule and put them in a warm space above 20 degrees to germinate. Water in and keep moist but not wet. Let the plants develop well above and below in the pot. Transplant if necessary to a bigger pot. Plant out into a garden bed when the weather is consistently warm. You can also grow them in a big pot or tub. When you plant into an outdoor garden choose a warm, free-draining site of no more than moderate fertility. Space plants about 30cm apart and allow 60cm between rows. The plants will grow up to 50cm tall with a bushy habit. Peanuts will be ready to harvest 140 days from transplant. As the plant develops it will produce yellow flowers. Flowering will continue for up to two months as the plant grows. The peanut pods will develop on the roots over the growing season. Like with potatoes, it is a good idea to mound soil up around the developing plants. The foliage will yellow and die back when the peanuts are ready to harvest. To harvest, lift the whole plant and hang it, by the roots, in the sun to dry for three to five days. At this point you can shell the pods to get your peanuts. Another great plant to tempt kids into the garden with!

Community garden of epic proportions A group of like-minded volunteers are finding joy in coming together and sharing knowledge to create a magical community garden for all to enjoy. If you ever find yourself at the Mangawhai Domain on a Friday morning chances are you’ll notice the enthusiastic gardeners of the Mangawhai Community Garden arriving to tend their crops and harvest any produce that is ready. What a hive of activity; volunteers wheeling barrowfuls of mulch to renew paths, weeding and spreading pea straw mulch among other things. The health of the soil is so important to the volunteers the garden has been kept spray-free, and building compost to enrich the soil is a large part of the workload. The gardeners pick up animal manure and seagrass off site and rely on donations of sawdust and shredded paper. A very kind coffee processor drops off coffee husks and grinds. Crops they grow for composting include comfrey, sugar cane, banana leaves, Mexican sunflowers and lemongrass. A delicious morning tea is enjoyed by all when the jobs are done. The group is excited for the new season’s crops after a harsh year of pests and high rainfall which flooded the kumara crop. Last season a number of new crops were trialled, including peanuts that grew well. Another new plant that performed well and had very attractive foliage was Caigua, pronounced Kai-wa, which is a small gherkin like fruit traditionally used to reduce cholesterol and high blood pressure. Open on a Friday morning, the Little SHOP,

built by members of the Mangawhai Shed, stocks homemade preserves, seedlings, seeds, colourful popping corn and Can-OWorms: tiger worms for home worm farms. The income from the shop helps to keep the garden self-funding. Recycling is also a priority for the gardeners and local firm, Mico Plumbing, donates their wooden packing frames which would otherwise go to landfill. These have been upcycled to create compost bins with help from the Mangawhai Shed members who cut small blocks of wood to use as spacers for airflow. The frames were also used to construct a woodshed for the pizza oven, a welcome addition to the garden bringing local groups together to enjoy good food utilising garden produce.

future teaching sessions are anticipated. The garden will be open for the annual Mangawhai Garden Ramble on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 November with plants and preserves for sale. Concrete garden art by the Faraway Garden will be on display and the Mangawhai Shed will have their wares for sale. Community coming together for kiwi An inspiring and heartwarming story despite the heartbreaking ending. Kiwi are back and thriving in our area; and Nicki Morrison, owner of Doggy Bush Break, is encouraging us all to help protect and foster their population resurgence. Wo rd s Ni k i t a O l iv e r Me t c a l f e

For dog walker Nicki, it was a usual Tuesday as she took her morning pack, nicknamed the ‘Dream Team’ due to their impeccable behaviour, for a typical adventure along Omaha Beach. It wasn’t long before her pack's attention was drawn to something in the rocks, each of them sniffing at a certain spot before walking away. This is where the story of a community's desperate effort to rescue a fallen kiwi begins. Laying paralysed at the bottom of a cliff at the southern end of Omaha Beach was a juvenile kiwi that, despite having suffered a tremendous fall of at least 20 metres, looked to be in otherwise healthy condition. Thanks to Nicki’s quick thinking, the kiwi was kept warm in her jumper and later picked up by the Department Of Conservation (DOC). Passersby and Nicki herself were

understandably in awe and overcome by the experience of seeing our precious native bird up close and in daylight. After sharing her rescue story on her business Facebook page and later on the Omaha Beach Community page, to ensure locals were aware of the incident and the likelihood that more kiwi are living in the area, Nicki was overwhelmed by the outpouring of support. The community response was of concern and eagerness for updates on the kiwis condition, all hoping for its full recovery. “It was such a lovely, warm, vibrant, positive atmosphere that was created in the community,” says Nicki. DOC safely delivered the young kiwi to Warkworth Farm Vets where it was monitored throughout the day and overnight. The

following morning the kiwi was transferred to Auckland Zoo’s veterinary hospital for further care but sadly, due to the injuries it had sustained and underlying diseases that were discovered, euthanasia was the kindest and only option. A devastating blow for everyone involved who worked so hard to try and save the kiwi, and the community who rallied for its survival; but also a poignant reminder for Nicki, saying “our community is getting more kiwi, we have to take responsibility for them.” With no tagging present the kiwi was not part of the release by the Ngāti Manuhiri Settlement Trust and the Tamahunga Trappers that was carried out in March 2023. Kiwi’s are territorial creatures so it seems they're moving away from Tāwharanui, where it is believed the kiwi travelled to Omaha from. Most of us aren’t aware kiwi are living

this close to us and as Nicki says of the growing kiwi population, “it’s a good thing, it’s a positive thing…but hey we need to take precautions because they’re kinda special!” Tamahunga Trappers work tirelessly to protect kiwi against their two main predators in the area, ferrets and weasels, and as a community we need to do our part. This includes driving carefully around coastlines and forest roads, keeping our cats inside at night where possible, and if our dogs are prey driven towards birds consider Kiwi Avoidance Training, a joint venture by Save The Kiwi and DOC. Taking these precautions and increasing the community's awareness of the flourishing number of kiwi in our area is the key to keeping them safe and ensuring numbers continue to grow. If you’d like to learn more about Kiwi Avoidance Training please contact Tris Bondsfield from The Forest Bridge Trust: tris@TheForestBridgeTrust.org.nz 022 024 0314 If you’re concerned about the wellbeing of a kiwi in the area please contact DOC Warkworth/Great Barrier Island Area Office: 28 Baxter Street, Warkworth | 09 425 7812

The women of The Forest Bridge Trust Locally, women are answering the call to engage in restoration initiatives and community projects. The Forest Bridge Trust is no exception, currently employing 18 women who all share a passion for conservation.

Led by Chief Executive Officer Ana Christmas, a common thread among these women is a desire to make a positive difference and collaborate with the community. "We love working with, educating, and empowering landowners to achieve their own conservation goals," says Tris Bondsfield, the Community Liaison Lead. "We are all passionate about making a meaningful difference, leaving people and places better than before.”

The trust's ecologist, Dr Virginia Moreno, is implementing activities such as kiwi call and forest bird counts, matuku-hūrepo/ bittern surveys, bat assessments, trail camera monitoring of predators, and habitat connectivity modelling. “Stoats are the primary reason why 95% of kiwi hatched in the wild perish before they reach breeding age” explains Virginia. “We must eradicate predators from the forest bridge if kiwi are to have a fighting chance.”

Providing a safe forest bridge for kiwi to traverse from the Kaipara Coast and reunite with their cousins in Tāwharanui was the inspiration for the trust founders, Gill and Kevin Adshead. With a developing focus on other native species, the trust is now playing a significant role in the nationwide Predator Free 2050 initiative.

The trust's predator control team establishes and maintains traplines across the bridge, and Eliane Lagnaz is a highly valued member of this team. With years of dedicated conservation volunteering experience, her expertise is a tremendous asset when she visits landowners to assist in setting up their traplines.

Sustaining the trust's ambitious project relies on enlisting a dedicated team of volunteers to help maintain traps and monitor trail cameras. Leading this effort are Elena Siun and Paula Griffin. With a keen interest in both conservation and community wellbeing, this dynamic duo recognises that rallying the community around a conservation project not only benefits the environment but also enhances overall health and wellbeing. “Volunteering with The Forest Bridge Trust offers a unique opportunity to be part of something truly exceptional”, says Paula. “It’s an opportunity to immerse yourself in nature, witness the vibrant birdlife, and build meaningful connections with fellow volunteers." Angela Parkin and Katie Forno serve as the Trust's Fencing and Riparian

Supporting animal welfare with affordable fashion Headed by Tobie Curtis, a mother of three with a lifetime of experience working with animals, Northern Valley Animal Haven is a permanent shelter for guinea pigs, rabbits, chickens, horses and sheep; and now you can benefit from their newly opened fundraising store while also supporting animal rescue efforts.

After her 19 year old English bull terrier passed away in 2019, Tobie and her family decided to start a rescue haven for guinea pigs and rabbits; pets people often don’t realise require a lot of work. Now the haven is situated on a ten acre property on the edge of Wellsford and also accommodates other animals such as chickens, horses and sheep. Guinea pigs can live for eight years and rabbits for 12 years, similar to a pet lamb. At Northern Valley Animal Haven animals are a big commitment for the whole family. Guinea pigs and rabbits require regular cleaning and housekeeping of their cage environment and they can have special needs and dietary requirements. They’re also considered to be exotic pets and will get the best care from an exotic vet, which can mean extra expense. They are definitely not the cheap and easy animals they are made out to be! To facilitate the growing need to provide shelter for these animals, the Haven recently opened a fundraising shop at 138 Rodney Street, Wellsford. The store has new and pre-loved fashion items for all. And while the animals are the main part of the mission, they are pleased to be able to help the community by providing affordable clothing and fashion items for everyone. Some of the main brands that Northern Valley Fashions currently offers include Fifth Avenue Collection, a huge range of Canadian designed Swarovski fashion jewellery and Sweet Cheeks Leggings - soft peachskin leggings in over 400 different designs and sizes in partnership with a New Plymouth based company. Also on offer are several racks of pre-loved clothing for the whole family at just $1 an item. Due to the rising cost of living, Tobie and her family are hoping they can alleviate any struggles the community are experiencing when it comes to the cost of clothing their families. Northern Valley Fashions accept donations of good, clean clothing and small household items. Sizes range from baby to ladies size 30 and there is also a growing selection of items for the family and the home. Northern Valley Animal Haven and Northern Valley Fashions seek to improve the lives of animals and people in our community. Visit the website, follow the Facebook page or join the interactive VIP group to support the work they are doing. The shop is open Monday to Friday 10am-5pm and some Saturdays and late nights. From zero to hero It’s been a successful year for the Kowhai Swimming Club, based in Warkworth, with a number of wins and great successes for their team of national swimmers.

The year started with a very successful Division II Nationals in Wellington, where Kowhai swimmers were all finalists, some winning national ribbons and both Open Boys Medley Relays gaining position as Top Auckland Club at the meet. Off the back of this, four Kowhai swimmers went on to compete at the New Zealand Short Course Nationals, held at the Hawke’s Bay Regional Aquatic Centre in August. Sienna Morrison, Toby Hewertson, Aaron Skipper and Ryan Hewertson all achieved personal best times and gained valuable experience racing against the country's top swimmers and some from overseas too. The Kowhai National Team ranges in age from 13-18 years old and have all members have been with Kowhai Swimming for a long time; some starting at the club from seven years old and working their way up the ranks to where they are today. It really is like "zero to hero" but does come with a lot of dedication and hard work! Kowhai Swimming Club trains at Mahurangi College pool and currently have vacancies for Junior swimmers on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons with a few spaces also open on the competition squad. So why not start your swimming journey right now?! Ability to swim 25 metre Backstroke and 25 metre Freestyle is essential. Did you also know Adult Lane Swimming is available to the public at the Mahurangi College pool every night from 6-7pm and Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday mornings. If you wish to join the club or come for a trial swim then please get in touch for more information. KowhaiSwimming@gmail.com

Get jazzed up in Warkworth If you’ve been to the Vintry or Matakana Farmers’ Market any time in the last ten years, you’ve probably heard local jazz ensemble, Latakana. While the group has gone their separate ways for now, long time member, Chris James, has put together a new combo called Latter Karma. Wo rd s L u ke Wi l l i a m s o n

Chris is a music teacher at Warkworth Primary School and has his roots firmly in the Warkworth and Matakana communities. “I’m particularly interested in giving young musicians the opportunity to perform live with support from the ‘oldies’. The band’s first 2 nights on 7 September and 5 October attracted around 60 guests and Chris is hoping to build on that for the next dates on Thursday 2 November and Thursday 7 December. And if all goes well, Back Bar Jazz could be on the menu for 2024. “If we get the support, I’d like to introduce a
