CHANGING HANDS Matakana Four Square has changed hands, with new owners David and Helen Whyman taking over just before Labour Weekend. David and Helen have owned the Waipapa Four Square, just north of Kerikeri, for the last five years, and now they are making the move to Matakana. Our goal is to bring a flagship small supermarket experience to Matakana,” says David. “We want to provide the community with not just a shop, but a community hub.” The goal is for people to think “this is the best supermarket I've ever been in” and just what you need, right nearby. David and Helen will be joined by their two daughters Eva and Bella, who you may see lending a helping hand at the weekends.

Unless she wanted to pay adult prices for kids' makeup (that would ultimately end up with little fingers everywhere) there was nothing on the market. She created Wildflower Children's Makeup and aimed to source the ingredients and products as locally as possible, leaving a smaller eco-footprint, whilst supporting NZ business. “We make all of our makeup ourselves with a lot of love and excitement!” she says, bringing safer, more eco-friendly options to our children. www.instagram.com/wildflower_childrensmakeup www.wildflowerchildrensmakeup.com

WINNERS IN SAFETY When it comes to the ocean, or any body of water, the main thing that Kath Manning would like everyone to remember is that it is constantly changing. Words Kate Moore

“Know your limits. You may go to a beach one weekend and it's perfectly calm, but then you may return the next weekend and the conditions have changed dramatically, so if in doubt speak to a lifeguard.” All the lifeguards that patrol Waipu are locals so if you need to know anything, not just beach conditions – perhaps where the best fish and chips are – then just ask. Kath and Tim Manning started visiting Waipu nine years ago with their three young children and fell in love with the area so much that they made the move permanent two years ago. They were told by a community member that they should check out the local life-saving club and straight away Kath saw the potential and embraced the extended family that the club has become. Kath is officially Club Captain, but she also wears a multitude of other hats around the club. One of her favourite things about the club is seeing how the different ages mentor each other and seeing the different levels supporting each other. Kath is also very proud of what the club does,

especially “seeing the relief on people's faces when they are being rescued and getting someone home to their family.” Waipu Surf Lifesaving Club is the oldest still active club in the Northern region and this year were the lucky recipients of two awards. The first is the Emergency Callout Squad of the Year. They are the first squad to ever receive it. Kath is joint co-ordinator of the ECOS, along with Rick Stolwerk who is also the President. The Squad is made up of 15 volunteers – who range in ages from 20 up to 65 years old and are on call 24/7 as “people get into trouble no matter the season”. There are eight water support and then the rest of the squad is made up of other various volunteers who fulfil a multitude of roles such as opening the club and preparing the gear, some are spotters who keep an eye on patients and provide updates. All in-water members are qualified in rock rescues and body recoveries. The second award the club took out was the Innovation of the Year Award – this is in part

thanks to the squad mentioned above, but focuses more on the network of spotters that they have trained around the key vantage points of the coastline using community members. This means that if someone is in trouble and they have a vague idea on where they are, or if someone calls in stating that someone is in danger, these spotters can be called upon to keep track of the distressed until the Search and Rescue Squad can get there. If you have any questions, are thinking of joining the Waipu Surf Lifesaving Club, or if you would like to discuss sponsorship then head along to the Club on the Sunday of Labour weekend where the club will be open for all and members will be taking registrations. There will also be a Club Day on Monday 3 January where the community can come and have a look around. Kath Manning, Club Captain, Administrator kathpat77@hotmail.com Rick Stolwerk (President, life member, local NRC Councillor) ricks@nrc.govt.nz

TURNING DATA INTO GOLD As the country sat at home watching Lisa Carrington and the New Zealand women’s sprint kayak team paddle their way to Olympic victory, Paul McAlpine of Warkworth held his breath on the sidelines in Tokyo along with the rest of the coaching team. Words Leah Botherway

Paul has been working as a Biomechanist for most of his professional career, with the last eight years employed as a Performance and Technique Analyst by High Performance Sport New Zealand (HPSNZ). HPSNZ works with the various national sporting organisations (NSOs) to ensure the country’s success on the world stage. They provide support in the form of additional resources, knowledge and carefully selected teams of coaches and experts. As the Head of Performance and Technique Analysis HPSNZ, Paul is one of those very experts. As a Performance and Technique Analyst, it’s Paul’s job to assess an athlete’s performance by observing, recording, and deciphering movement. He then provides the coaches and athletes with information to help understand their performance, or as Paul puts it, “turn this highly tech and sometimes nerdy data into digestible information".

Whilst overseeing all of the Analysts across HPSNZ’s different sports, Paul’s daily focus is with Canoe Racing New Zealand (CRNZ) and, more specifically, sprint kayaking. CRNZ works with everyone from recreational competitors to development athletes right through to Olympians. Travelling to Albany for work every day, Paul can often be found at Lake Pupuke working with some of New Zealand’s top sprint kayakers as they prepare to represent New Zealand in competitions around the world. Armed with an arsenal of measurement equipment, including GPS trackers and motion sensors, Paul uses this real-time technology to monitor and then quantify an athlete’s performance to ensure that they are performing at their absolute best. Like a lot of careers, Paul’s journey to where he is today was not a linear one, and it was his love of snowboarding that initially steered

him towards studying Sports and Exercise Science at Auckland University. He then followed this with his Masters before completing his PhD where he focussed on the injury mechanisms in snowboarding. During his studies, Paul also lectured at Auckland University, where he spent his time in the Motion Capture Lab at the now-closed Tamaki Innovation Campus. This lab would use motion capture technology to record different movements in sportspeople to figure out the cause of injury. After completing his OE in 2010, Paul accepted an offer at SASI (South Australia Sports Institute) in Adelaide to work as a Biomechanist. Whilst SASI worked with athletes across all different sports, their main focus was kayaking and rowing, and this is where he gathered his experience and love for the sport.

When the time came for Paul and his wife Laura to move home, Paul accepted the Performance and Technique Analyst role at HPSNZ, where he had the opportunity to revisit the sport he loves most – snowboarding. Paul, Laura and their young daughter Pearl spent their summers in Warkworth and Winters in Wanaka, where Paul worked alongside Snow Sports New Zealand and the Kiwi Winter Olympics Team in preparation for both the 2014 and 2018 Winter Olympics. As Pearl reached school age, Paul and Laura decided to live permanently in Warkworth, and he’s been working with Canoe Racing New Zealand ever since. With the delayed Tokyo Olympics now done and dusted, Paul, along with the teams at HPSNZ and CRNZ, are working towards repeating the same success in Paris in 2024. www.hpsnz.org.nz www.canoeracing.org.nz

A REEL GOOD TIME Words Kate Moore

Blue Marlin, high on every travelling anglers list

The Fisherman's Shed, located in Mangawhai is the latest in a series of dream-inspiring ideas for Tony Orton and his family. Started two years ago (thanks to Covid), the construction began under the watchful eye of Cameron Building Services Ltd., and all is set to be revealed this November. The property is set rurally and stands out in the quality of the workmanship, however, do not think this build is pretentious in any way as there is a striking balance of using quality, yet simple, materials to create a level of coziness and a “home away from home for people to come and explore the local area”. The Fisherman Shed hosts four people, or

“a boatload” in Tony’s words, and can be set up to accommodate whatever sleeping arrangement is needed. During the week it will be home to the people that book in for an “Offshore Adventure” - Tony’s fishing charter company, and then on weekends it will be available to people who need a weekend retreat and a spot to enjoy what the North has to offer. Offshore Adventures has allowed Tony and his family to travel around the world escorting people to amazing fishing spots and allowing them to live out their fantasy of catching that bucket-list fish. As Tony has done this for 20 years, he has enough stories to fill a book, but

his all-time favourite moment is the look that his clients get in their eyes when they land the fish that has haunted their dreams. Pre-Covid days Tony, his wife Bea and their two children would travel to six to eight destinations every New Zealand winter. There they would create personally guided trips to experience some of the world's truly amazing fishing destinations such as Oman, Canada, Mexico, San Lucas, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Trinidad and Tobago. Then from the end of October to the end of April Mangawhai would become home and they would welcome people to their boutique lodge and all that the New Zealand ocean has to offer. In today’s

world, they are bound to their local waters, but that hasn’t slowed them at all, with Kiwis booking them out until 2023! During a charter, you can expect to be up as the sun kisses the horizon and the day begins by firstly catching the bait used throughout the experience. Tony subscribes to sustainable fishing and that means that most everything is released back into the water. As the clientele is mainly international tourists, they have no need to take away a large Kingfish or Snapper, all that is needed is enough to fill hungry bellies at the end of a long, fun-filled day. Even Kiwis are limited to what is taken back to shore with Tony’s policy being one kingfish per person. During the week people are encouraged to explore the area and take in the wonderful food that the region produces, however on the final night a big family meal is prepared, where everyone sits together and enjoys the bounty obtained from the briny blue. www.facebook.com/ OffshoreAdventuresSportFishing 34 Waiotahi Drive Mangawhai, 0573

GET SWIMFLUENCED Whether you are a sea-loving newbie, transitioning lapster or seasoned salty, the Leigh Swimmers pod can help you gain the confidence, stamina or courage you need to let go of the shore and find joy in the ocean.

They’re an eclectic bunch with a shared passion for ocean swimming and for exploring the underwater seascapes of our stunning coastlines. Their adventures are not about going faster, longer or collecting medals, but more about sharing the delight of ocean exploration with a supportive community of swimmers – year round. There’s a growing mountain of research about the benefits of swimming, especially in cold water: it reduces stress, boosts the immune system, burns calories, improves circulation and encourages healthy breathing techniques. No matter if you’re scarred or scared, sick or sad, no matter what your age, body type or ability - water supports you and it gets those endorphins pumping! You don’t have to be a gun swimmer to join this pod. It’s enough if you can swim at least

250 metres freestyle non-stop (even at snail pace) and confidently tread water.

750 metre triangular laps supported by the pod in the safety of Mathesons Bay.

All you really need are goggles, togs, curiosity and courage. A cap will keep your head warm and water out of your ears. For safety and visibility, a tow float is highly recommended. It’s nice but not essential to wear a swimming wetsuit for buoyancy and warmth. If breathing is a bother, take along a snorkel, mask and fins.

Depending on tide and conditions, longer safaris scouting out Goat Island, Cape Rodney, Ti Point, Whangateau, Point Wells, Omaha and beyond are organised.

For rusty/rookie swimmers, there’s an Intro to Ocean Swimming session most Fridays, 9am at Mathesons Bay. They start in the shallows parallel to the beach and eventually encourage you to choose courage over comfort and strike out for the pontoon...and maybe a little beyond. Loopy Tuesdays offer the chance to swim

The popularity of their ocean swims has grown so much that the tentacles are stretching into new realms. ĀTIU CREEK REGIONAL PARK What was once rural farmland with picturesque views across the Kaipara Harbour is now Auckland's third-largest regional park. Words Leah Botherway | Photos Victoria Joule

Ātiu Creek Regional Park is located on the Tapora Peninsula, just a ten minute drive west of Wellsford. The 843-hectare park was gifted to the Auckland Council in 2005 by the Chatelanat family so that New Zealanders could enjoy the land and have unrivalled access to the Kaipara Harbour. The park is made up of bush, wetlands and sandy beaches and is home to several endangered birds, including the fantail, kereru and tūī. By making this generous gift, it was the Chatelanat's intention to protect

this birdlife along with the area's history, which dates back at least six centuries.

Today, over a third of the park is made up of mature and regenerating forest, which

The final preferred mode of transport within the park is horseback. LET'S GO, OFF-ROAD! Summer is finally upon us! There is no doubt, one of the most enjoyable things to do with family and friends is to jump in the UTE or SUV, and hit the open road or head off-road. When you do decide to hit the local beach or 4x4 park, check the local council website for guidelines to make sure you are in the right place set aside for vehicle activities. Some beaches and parks require a permit which is easy to obtain online.

for adventuring off-road or going bespoke

Sometimes adventuring off-road can present risks, if you are new to off-road driving you could find yourself unequipped and unprepared to deal with a tricky situation, like getting bogged in soft sand. No matter what level of experience you have, you will need the right equipment to make sure you get home safely.

on board or if you get a cut or graze.

BUT HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT IS FOR YOU? Rodney based online store, Off Road Planet has created this quick checklist, for some basic must have items you need

camping in your UTE or SUV this summer.

FIRST AID KIT It may seem so ordinary but this is a piece of kit that is essential, especially with kids

A RECOVERY KIT This is a no brainer. A basic recovery kit

usually consists of a snatch strap, gloves,

shovel and some shackles, and this should be all you need to get out of a tricky spot.

Once stuck off-road in mud or bogged down in sand, the only way out is to dig! Failing that, get assistance from another vehicle. You may also want to consider a pair of

recovery boards, mini tyre gauge or a plugin mini tyre compressor.

AN AWNING To really enjoy the heat of our summer this is a must have, and is usually mounted to your roof racks. An awning will provide shelter from the hot summer sun and is quick and easy to set up when you find that spot on the beach. If you are really keen, why not a rooftop tent package? Remember safety and common sense first! Have a charged phone with spare charger, torch, water, food in a backpack and good tyres. Join the 4WD & Overlanding in NZ Facebook blog page and check out Off Road’s website for more information. You can also flick them an email for all of your off-road gear needs. www.offroapdlanet.kiwi sales@offroadplanet.kiwi

SETTING SAIL A long time ago in a far-off land called Mangawhai, two aging guys who knew a little and a lot about sailing, thought it would be a good idea to pass some of that knowledge on to the local children in the small community. But would the children be interested? The guys had no idea, so they turned to modern technology for help. They created some blogs and placed them on the four local community Facebook pages, asking if the local parents and their children between the ages of 8 and 16, and weighing in at less than 70kg, would be interested in learning how to sail a craft no bigger than your average bathtub but a lot prettier. In less than 48 hours the response was overwhelming. These kids and their parents must have cracked the code and realised just how much fun and knowledge could be gained by messing about on the Magical Mangawhai river’s pristine environment in these miniature boats. So based on the power of social media and the response rate, the two guys took their idea to their leader (President) suggesting that it may be a good Rotary project for due consideration. So, a project was born, but not your average short term Rotary project, this one was on-going like for years and years, just as long as there were kids around who wanted to learn how to sail. At the start there were over a dozen kids keen as mustard who wanted to learn to sail and only one secondhand boat. So, the guys went back to social media to ask for help, and help was forthcoming in more ways than one following an article about the project in a local newspaper. One of the guys was approached by a gentleman who wanted to donate $10,000

from his late stepmother’s will to the project, and he too was a keen sailor. The money was used to purchase a new rescue boat, outboard and some life jackets, but they only had one training boat. They spotted an advert on a Buy and Sell page for an Optimist boat, the type they wanted, and approached the seller who was looking for $100 ono for it up in Whangarei. They told him the project story, said they were Rotarians, and he said, “You can have it!” They dashed up to Whangarei to collect it before he could change his mind, and they had their second boat albeit it needed lots of work to make it seaworthy again. One of the guys (not Tom Hanks) wrote off to countless funding organisations to both tell the story and ask for help, but heard nothing back from anyone for weeks, and serious depression set in amongst the two guys, until one day an email appeared from an angel called Chloe (Wright). She wanted to know how she and her Family Trust could help the project, so the guy (not Tom Hanks) called her, and she kindly donated $20,000 to the project so four fully equipped and ready to sail boats could be acquired. She has been an inspiration to the project.

The Mangawhai Satellite Rotary Club LearnTo-Sail project now has seven training boats, and 25 plus children registered to sail in their first season which started on 21 September with a land-based session followed by a waterbased session the following day. They have a waiting list of children who missed out on the first intake and are still getting enquiries from parents wanting their children to learn, daily. They have received offers of other boats from other organisations but need more teachers in order to run more lessons. All the lessons are free, and all the teachers at present are members of the club. There is a second project called Learn-To-Race where the LearnTo Sail students, after they have “passed out”, will be taught the additional skills required to race these small bathtubs, just like the late great Sir Peter Blake did. The dream for these kids, these projects, the Mangawhai community and Rotary is that one day in the future maybe, just maybe, one or more of the students who were taught how to sail here and race will represent New Zealand on the world stage in some sailing event. mangawhai.sailing@gmail.com www.facebook.com/ MangawhaiRotaryLearntoSailProject

FREE RANGE FISHING Kaz began kayak fishing around fifteen years ago after his out-board engine decided it wanted to retire, and a handy kayak was his only choice to get out on the water. Instantly hooked by the ease of launching and catching plenty of fish he has never looked back. He also loves being out in nature - it’s hard to beat a glassy calm morning or an incredible evening sunset on the water. Kaz has been fishing around the beautiful Matakana Coast and Kawau Bay since moving to the area as a child with his family nearly thirty-five years ago. He now lives in Tawharanui with his wife and their two children. “Kayak fishing allows you to sneak quietly around in close to rocks where boats cannot reach and the big fish like to hide. It is a very

exciting way to go fishing as it increases the hunting aspect,” he says. “Hooking a fish in a kayak is a lot of fun, but the fish can tow you around a bit and you need to multitask steering and reeling to land your fish.”

them the ultimate kayak fishing adventure. The trips are for two to five people, either early morning or evening and run for around four hours, but as Kaz says, “if the fishing’s hot it's hot!”

Kaz’s first tip for a beginner would be safety first! Wear a life jacket, always tell someone where you are going and to make sure you always tie your paddle to the kayak.

They will supply everything you’ll need to have a fantastic day on the water with New Zealand made kayaks and quality gear and tackle. They fish mostly for snapper and kingfish although there are plenty of other species to catch and sometimes if you’re lucky you may get to see dolphins or other marine mammals.

If the fishing is slow, don’t be afraid to change your fishing style, your lure or your bait and remember …“a bad day’s fishing is better than a good day at work!” Kaz’s new business Kayak Fishing Adventures is launching this summer, based out of Kawau Bay. He is using his local knowledge and fishing expertise to take groups out and give

THEIR TIPS FOR GROWING STRAWBERRIES First off, breathe and calmly ask your mind if you are prepared for eight months of intense equations with Mother Nature and hungry wildlife followed by collapsing soft fruit. If your answer is yes then continue reading! Soil Preparation and Timing • Between March and April remove vegetation and work soil over, adding lime and a balanced fertiliser. This breaks down into elements that plants can absorb. • Add organic matter such as seaweed or decomposing plant material - this helps with natural soil health, never be shy to add more lime. • Prepare raised beds with good covering, plastic or straw to prevent weeds, this will help hold moisture over the summer. Also plan for a good watering system. • Late May to early June, plant strawberry plants with good root growth, watering in as you go to stop plant stress. • Start and maintain slug and snail control followed by rabbit, rats, possum and pukeko control. Basic fungicide applications over the winter for leaf spots and soil borne pathogens will be the main targets throughout this period. • Removal of early flowers throughout winter, up to mid-September enhances

plant development. • Disease prevention, and chewing insects protection is required, along with mite eradication, before flowering commences. Good plant husbandry and disease pest prevention early on is the key to a rewarding garden throughout summer. • Place straw along rows early to mid October, allowing clean ground for berry harvesting October to December. Maintain soil moisture, and don’t be shy on water volumes. Soil Conditioning and Care • Application of fertilizer before planting was the main dressing. Now adding some liquid seaweed, or a balanced light liquid fertilizer, within the water system helps maintain plant quality. • Picking strawberries every two days will give regeneration of flowers and leaves for ongoing berry production. This allows plants not to be overloaded and encourages regrowth maximising your berries per plant. • In January and February, maintain water volumes and keep plants cool over the hot sunny days. This will allow longer picking, and a good plant husbandry. Your rewards earlier on in the season will be showing up now. Early disease and pest control was the trick to having berries at this time of year, along with plenty of water.

1. To make the pastry, beat the butter and sugar together until smooth, but not fluffy. Mix in the egg until combined, then add the flour. Bring together with your hands to form a dough. Wrap and chill in the fridge for 30 mins. 2. Dust a surface with flour and roll out the pastry to a 26cm circle (or 3cm bigger than your tin). Line a 23cm fluted tart tin with the pastry, leaving an overhang. Prick the base with a fork to stop any air bubbles forming. Chill for 30 mins. 3. Heat the oven to 200C. Line the pastry case with a scrunched up sheet of baking parchment and baking beans, then blind bake for 15 mins. Remove the parchment and beans and bake for 15-20 mins more until crisp and golden. Leave in the tin to cool.

STRAWBERRY TART INGREDIENTS

FOR THE CRÈME PÂTISSIÈRE

125g unsalted butter, softened slightly

300ml milk

85g icing sugar

150ml double cream

1 egg

1 tsp vanilla extract

200g plain flour plus extra for dusting

3 egg yolks

100g strawberry jam

60g caster sugar

500g strawberries, (small hulled, large sliced)

3½ tbsp cornflour

50g butter, cubed

2 tbsp apricot jam

and softened

4. To make the crème pâtissière, heat the milk, cream and vanilla in a pan over a medium heat, stirring occasionally. Bring up to a simmer. Meanwhile, whisk the yolks and sugar in a bowl for 3 mins until pale, then stir in the cornflour until combined. Pour a quarter of the hot cream over the egg mix, whisking continuously, then pour the warm egg mix into the pan with the rest of the cream. Stir over a low-medium heat for 5-8 mins until the crème pâtissière thickens. Transfer to a large bowl and cool for 15 mins, whisking occasionally. Gradually whisk in the butter until smooth, cover and put in the fridge until needed. 5. Beat the strawberry jam to loosen it, then spread over the bottom of the pastry case. Put the crème pâtissière into a piping bag and pipe in a spiral on top of the jam. Arrange the strawberries on top in a pattern. Heat the apricot jam in a small pan with 1 tbsp water until warm. Whisk to loosen the jam, then leave to cool slightly. Brush over the top of the strawberries.

SUNFLOWERS, PEAS, AND RADISHES... OH MY! Grown and eaten as shoots, microgreens are up to forty times more nutrient dense than

their bigger selves, and full of antioxidants, potassium, iron, zinc, magnesium, and

copper. Microgreens can be spicy, nutty,

rejuvenating, and tantalising among other flavours. They’re great in sandwiches, salads, wraps, or as a garnish in any

dish. Favoured by chefs for the delicacy,

microgreens are continuing to make their way onto everyone's plate.

Mr Microgreen is a new player in the microgreen market. Residing in Algies Bay, Warkworth, he grows and sells microgreens in his greenhouse and ‘grow garage’. Wanting to enter into agriculture, moreso market gardening, this is his step in that direction. With petroleum dwindling, and 2050 environmental targets looming, the need to produce local food sustainably is always his key motif.

that can be grown, some unexpected varieties such as amaranth, carrots, marigolds and nasturtiums. They are grown in trays, on racks in greenhouses or indoor grow rooms. Vertical farming has been taking off for some time, making use of valuable space in cities and urban environments. Countries like Singapore are trying to produce 30% of their food by 2030 via vertical farming.

There are plenty of varieties of microgreens

They really are a great crop for newcomers

getting into agriculture. In summer, crops can be ready to harvest in 7-12 days. They spend 3-4 days germinating, then another 4 days in the light, before carefully being harvested and packaged ready for our consumption. Coco coir is Mr Microgreens choice of medium to grow in. It comes from ground up coconut husks, and is a very neutral growing medium. Liquid seaweed feed is added to the watering can, and bottom fed under the tray of microgreens via an extra tray that catches the water beneath it. Supporting small scale agriculture is good for the soul, and the microgreens are good for the body. You can find Mr Microgreen at the Mangawhai School Market on a Saturday, at the Snells Beach Food Market, and various restaurants around Warkworth, Snells, and Omaha Beach. Pickup is available from his urban farm also. 027 865 0311 www.mrmicrogreen.co.nz

SEASONAL GARDENING CALENDAR More sun, more warmth, longer days and rising anticipation of the summer harvest yet to come. November is a month to be finalising your summer garden crops like tomatoes, capsicums, chillies, melons, cucumbers and sweet corn. Soon you will be wondering what to do with all your produce, but that’s another chapter. Right now, you should be enjoying crunchy radish, fennel bulbs, courgettes, lovely lettuce and spring beetroot to name a few. Words Geoff Ledbrook

BEETROOT Beetroot may not be in your ‘must grow in my garden list’, but give it a thought as this humble earthy, easy to grow vegetable is well worth a position in your garden. Its culinary pedigree is outstanding. It can be eaten raw or cooked, preserved as a sliced pickle or tasty chutney and as a cleansing raw juice. Beetroot is remarkably easy to grow and more often than not will give you warm fuzzy feelings as a successful gardener. It requires only a reasonably fertile well drained soil with a pH above 6 for it to grow with little effort on your part. The seeds, like silverbeet, are a compound seed and can germinate several seedlings. To direct sow, plant them 1cm deep 15cm apart, once soil temperature is above 12 degrees C. The downside of direct sowing is you may need to thin out seedlings as they mature. I prefer to sow in seedling trays and transplant into a well prepared bed. This approach gives you an evenly spaced bed of single beetroots. Just be careful to not disturb the roots too much when transplanting and only select seedlings with a good strong root system. Beetroot will grow well with many other vegetables. They are quick to mature (50 to 60 days) and help you take advantage of those empty spaces. You can plant with long term crops like tomatoes, broccoli, beans and lettuce. Popular varieties include Detroit Dark Red, Golden Detroit, Chioggia and Cylindra. Evidently the distinctive earthy flavour of beetroot is due to an organic compound called Geosmin. Geosmin is produced by soil microbes known as actinomycetes. This chemical is also associated with the smell of rain from wet dirt, particularly after a dry spell of weather, and humans are able to detect it at 0.1 parts per billion.

Many seeds will work best planted directly into your outdoor garden with warmth in the soil to provide reliable germination. Keeping the seeds moist as they germinate may be your main job. Early weeding is also essential for crops like carrots to make sure your plants can establish ahead of the weeds.

Keep an eye on soil moisture

Mulch wherever possible

Keep on top of weeds and use them in your compost

Tie up crops like tomatoes, remove laterals and prune lower stems to let in light

LIFE OF A DESERT DREAMER Danica Burghout is living her boldest boho self in her converted barn in Matakana. A bohemian and western goddess sharing her 70s style and love of cati with her grown Instagram community. We sat down with her and discussed her style inspiration and tips on growing a cati family.

How would you best describe your style? I would describe my style as western boho with a hint of hippie and a splash of the 1970s. It’s a slightly unique combination, but I think you can absolutely see these styles reflected in our home and the clothes I love to wear.

What is your style/design inspiration? I am heavily influenced by desert landscapes and places like Joshua Tree National Park in California, also 70’s movies, country music and the years I lived on the beachside in Australia. As well as just the simple little things like the sunrise outside the barn every morning and the adventures we take in our van in summer.

What do you love most about the area? I, of course, love this area for its beaches and its stunning scenery, but I think I love it even more for its buzz and creative spirit. I

love seeing all the small business start-ups around and so many people following their creative dreams. The buzz has definitely inspired my creative side with Desert Dreamer and a few other exciting projects we have on the horizon too. Anything just feels possible here!

What do you love most about the area? We’ve just recently moved into the barn that we renovated on my partner’s parents’ property and it’s been a special place I’ve been allowed to go wild with my Desert Dreamer style. I am heavily influenced by desert landscapes and places like Joshua Tree National Park in California, also 70s movies, country music and the years I lived the beachside in Australia. As well as just the simple little things like the sunrise outside the barn every morning and the adventures we take in our van in summer.

What is it that you love about Cacti, and how many do you have?

I have always loved cacti, so it’s been amazing to see my partner embrace the obsession as well. He comes from a very artistic family who love plants and gardening, so it was the perfect fit! We bought a greenhouse at Christmas last year, and between the greenhouse and the barn, we now have over 100 cacti. I don’t think the collection can ever be complete, so we may need another greenhouse or two soon! To me, cacti reflect the vast open space of the desert, so they remind me of freedom, adventure and limitless possibility – which are the values I’m chasing in my everyday life as well.

You’ve grown a great community on Instagram. What do you love best about your followers and sharing your message/journey? I’ve been lucky to grow a beautiful community who have wholeheartedly accepted the cacti babes and now love the barn as much as we do. Especially since Covid, I have realised

I’m Paul Glover. An artist, fascinated with the craft of garden design. Creating beautiful, functional, liveable and magical outdoor spaces, unique to each client’s wants and needs. that ultimately, we are all seeking community, authentic connection and somewhere we are free to truly be ourselves. So that is the space I wanted to create with Desert Dreamer – a place where I consistently show up as my truest authentic self, and in turn give others the permission to do the same. Being reminded that we are really never alone has been extremely therapeutic for me moving to a new town and heading into a pandemic as well. It turns out that finding authentic connection was as simple as reaching out and seeking it myself first. www.instagram.com/_desert.dreamer_

DESERT DREAMER’S CACTI GROWING TIPS •

Find the sunniest, driest spots in your home for your cacti – windowsills of course work well, but keep them out of bathrooms and poorly-lit rooms.

Make sure each pot has a drainage hole and try to keep your soil as grainy and therefore freedraining as possible.

Most garden stores now stock specific cacti/succulent potting mix which is incredibly helpful!

You can still underwater a cactus! To support maximum growth in the warmer months, water regularly but just make sure the soil is completely dry between waterings.

During winter, you can go back to watering very infrequently and give the cactus the neglect they’re well-known for!

Feed them with a cactus/ succulent friendly, slow-release fertiliser every few months.

Do your research and support local nurseries and independent cacti sellers.

BACK TO THE FUTURE What was once a cottage perched on the edge of native bush leading down to the Matakana River has now been transformed into a family home that has remained true to its original character. Words Leah Botherway | Photos Alex Schwab

Brad and Ashley Wilson first purchased the three-bedroom cottage a few years back whilst they lived in Dunedin, where Brad played professional cricket for Otago. With Brad having grown up in Matakana and his parents still local to the area, they bought the cottage with the intention to one day make it their family home. That day came in 2019 when Brad retired from cricket, and they made the move up north with their young son Max in tow. After a year of living in their cosy cottage, it quickly became apparent that their new home was going to very soon become a little too cosy. So, they engaged Blair Moray-Cook at The House Concept in Point Wells to help them design renovations that would allow the house to grow alongside their family while retaining its original character features. The cottage sat between a lean-to and implement shed, both of which were removed to make room for the extension. Blair designed a second wing to the home, replicating the

charming façade of the original cottage. This sister wing was then connected to the original home via a light-filled glass hallway with views across to the native bush at the back of the property. The small kitchen became the laundry, and the existing living and dining area was transformed into a bedroom and office. The new wing is home to the master suite and a large open plan living and kitchen area with large sliding doors that extend the already generous living space even further for the warmer summer months. Once you step outside into the back garden, you are treated to a peaceful and secluded garden surrounded by native bush leading down to the Matakana River. When asked about her favourite part of the house, Ashley is quick to say the kitchen. Brad always promised her a “dream kitchen”, and that is precisely what she got. She worked with the team at The House Concept and their cabinetmaker, Neil Taylor to design her perfect kitchen. Together they created a spacious

and practical hub of the home that interacts seamlessly with the light and airy living and dining spaces. Another favourite spot for Ashley is the bathroom that Blair cleverly designed with their young family in mind. The bath is accessed via the shower, which in turn creates a wet room allowing kids to splash water and bubbles to their heart’s content whilst the rest of the bathroom remains dry. With the recent addition of their young daughter Pippa, the family of four (or five if you include their miniature schnauzer, Maggie) love living in their newly transformed home and have truly embraced Matakana life. Whether they’re wandering down to the markets on a Saturday morning, popping to 8 Wired Brewery for an afternoon drink or simply sitting out on the back deck with friends, it’s safe to say that Brad and Ashley are not moving anywhere any time soon. www.thehouseconcept.co.nz www.cabinetmakers.co.nz

FROM LAVA FLOWS RECONNECTION Some people are born to create. They possess a deep, organic and passionate disposition to turn ideas and dreams into tangible and beautiful realities. Alex Sherie is one of these special individuals and this can be seen in her penultimate and emotionally moving sculpture “From Lava Flows Reconnection”. Alex is a self-taught glass artist who has an affinity and love for shapes, curves and colour. Her expert eye anticipates which piece of glass fits next, and what turn and texture works best to enhance her vision. This allows Alex’s works to take on a life of their own from concept to completion, an ever-evolving energy that flows and ebbs like the tide. Alex’s passion and interest in creating started as a young child, watching her grandmother create fashionable and meticulously made Edwardian dolls from shells at her home near the wild coasts of Foxton. She came from a family of creatives who expressed themselves through various art mediums.

Alex is an accomplished muralist in art deco design with her art featured in homes all around the world and New Zealand. She has also exhibited a previous sculpture at the renowned Ellerslie Flower Show. These travels and explorations into art and the world provided her with inspiration but also solidified her embedded passion for sculpture. In 2017 she moved to Mangawhai, where the idea of a truly magnificent piece started to blossom. Her sculpture “From Lava Flows Reconnection” is a representation of her reconnection to the medium of sculpture which flows through her blood and her passion. Energy and personality is evident in

every curve and iridescent reflection of the meticulously placed glass pieces. Alex sourced glass from around the globe, making sure she had the perfect accompaniment to manifest her vision. Her eye for detail was faultless and each fragment fits seamlessly with the next. The project took over two and a half years to complete, and the sculpture took on a life of its own as time progressed. It embodies elements of the natural physical world, conjoining it to the metaphysical through emotion. There are representations of flora and fauna, of sky and earth and male and female.

From joining the last piece of metal to laying the last piece of glass, Alex’s sculpture “From Lava Flows Reconnection” is a labour of love and time, and you can feel the artist’s reverence and love for life throughout the sculpture. It exudes flow and solidarity and encourages feelings of comfort and adventure. Light dances off the iridescent glass and makes it feel alive and vigorous, a representation of nature and all its forms. Alex’s sculpture has been positioned in a garden in Mangawhai near the estuary, and can be viewed on appointment. Any interest is welcomed. alexbsherie@gmail.com

NATURE IS A TEACHER Our children grow with our gardens and the seasons. Children at Leigh Community Preschool are always close to nature, experiencing and learning from the natural world around them. Grounded in the calming sensory experiences that nature provides. From planting flowers, climbing trees, finding worms, to adopting spring lambs, learning in and through nature is key. The large outdoor play space allows tamariki to enjoy nature, whatever the weather, for most of the day in an aesthetically rich environment. Throughout the term kaiako research and plan ways to assist tamariki through individual planning and whanau engagements. Their local curriculum is guided by Te Whariki, an early childhood curriculum. Preschool tamariki and kaiako recently spent some time planting celery, red cabbage, spinach, parsley, broccoli, and strawberries

The ‘garden-to-table’ concept is well supported at Leigh preschool, whether it’s in the garden or with whanau. Bonding over shared food is an important ritual. All these learning experiences will encourage them to make responsible and sustainable choices, as ‘competent and confident’ learners.

Black Friday has become one of the largest shopping days of the year, famously used by major retailers to sell their products online at heavily slashed prices. This year Local Friday is offering an alternative, to support local business in a one-day event of love, competitions, special offers, demonstrations and promotions. Local Friday will be a day where we can invest our money back into the community to ensure the survival of our local retailers, restaurants, attractions and services. Prior to buying, like and follow your favourite on social media, post a review or recommend them to friends. Do your research and see how the business is operating during different alert levels, they may offer click and collect or free local delivery. Like and share the Local Friday – In Love with Local Facebook and Instagram pages.

SHARING IS CARING: BLOOD TRANSFUSIONS FOR PETS

Unsurprisingly, blood is as essential to life in animals as it is in humans, and just like in the human world, lose enough blood and your pet may need a blood transfusion to survive. Words Jon Makin, Warkworth Vets

We perform many blood transfusions at our clinic, most commonly in dogs, alpacas and cows. There are several common causes of acute onset severe anaemia in dogs which often necessitate life saving blood transfusions. Rat bait toxicity takes the top spot. It causes toxicity by preventing the blood from clotting leading to a blood loss anaemia. If not treated the dog will literally bleed to death (just like the rats do). The dog is usually presented to the vet by an owner as “a bit off” or “not himself”, or generally fairly vague initial signs. An experienced vet will pretty rapidly identify two things that immediately raise a red flag. The gums are pale, in some cases exceedingly so, and the femoral pulse, felt on the inside of the back leg has an unusual character to it, described as “thready” by vets. A quick

bleeding test and the index of suspicion is raised further, and the dog will be administered Vitamin K, the antidote, while further clotting tests are carried out to confirm rat bait toxicity. In the meantime the dog will still be bleeding and often needs a transfusion to save his life. This scenario is pretty common so we have a few systems in place to deal with it. We don’t store blood in freezers like in the human world. We store it in something far more biological, another dog. One of the drawbacks of being a vet or vet nurse’s pet is that you are often called upon to save a life by donating blood. One such hero of the canine world is Tane. Tane is a black Labrador and lives with his Dad (the vet) in the Kaipara Hills. Although admittedly he is no athlete, is of dubious intellect and if we’re being honest, is not strictly speaking “breed type”, he is a wonderful converter of any source of nutrition he can

beg, borrow or steal, into the highest quality, lifesaving, red blood corpuscles. The process of getting the blood involves sedating or anaesthetising the donor dog and then inserting a large bore needle into the jugular vein whereby a pint of blood is removed. The blood is agitated gently to mix it with an anticoagulant in the bag. Dogs do have blood types, and in the ideal world we would blood type them all before giving them the donor’s blood. In reality we are usually presented with a dog which is hovering precariously between life and death, and time really is too tight to allow blood typing. The blood is administered over four hours and the recipient is monitored closely by a veterinary nurse for any signs of a transfusion reaction. Tane is a regular donor and does it all for a pat on the head and a dried pig's ear, as does Cosmo the Retriever, Chico the Staffy cross

Lab and Nellie the Golden Lab, all regular donors belonging to our staff. Ten years ago it would have been unheard of to perform a blood transfusion on a cow. Now thanks to a blood parasite called Thelleria (first diagnosed in NZ by one of our Warkworth Vets clinicians), blood transfusions are more commonplace. A cow or calf near death will be on its feet within minutes of the blood being administered and be mooing to join the herd. Alpacas are a species that we regularly need to transfuse. In almost all cases the cause of the severe anaemia in this species is an internal parasite called Haemonchus, or Barber’s pole worm. The process of transfusing alpacas is much the same as with dogs other than the entire process tends to take place on the owner's farm rather than in our clinic. In most cases once the blood has been administered to the needy patient, they respond very quickly. It’s very gratifying to see how rapidly they improve. A weak, collapsed animal will be rendered fit and strong even before the entire bag has entered their bodies. It truly is a life saver. 'OH MY DARLING' BY MICHAEL LLEWELLYN Kiwi based songwriter, Michael Llewellyn, releases debut heart slapping album Oh My Darling.

Raspy and poetic, the ten tracks take us on a journey that is honest and raw. Re-telling personal stories of love and loss, Llewellyn invites us into his heart. "I was influenced a lot by Leonard Cohen and The Velvet Underground," he tells us. With tracks such as Mikaela and Whangamatā sitting upon an infectious rhythm section, crunchy guitars and intimate vocals. A break up album in its purest, Oh My Darling, released in October this year, encapsulates heartache, tenderness and grit. Llewellyn portrays the very personal world of his time spent etched into the ribs of Te Maunga O Taranaki. Longing for quietude

following a tumultuous break-up and a debilitating neck injury, a mad deluge of writing found its roots. “I probably stitched about sixteen songs that month.” Flavours of native bush on tracks such as Time it Ain’t Easy and Lady Bug evoke the healing qualities of our western coastline. His songs have a timelessness about them. Earnest and mature. Though we never lose sight of his humour and playfulness. “It's half comedy, and the songs make me feel something,” said one sweet listener earlier this year as Llewellyn played alongside his five-piece backing band at a festival in Havelock North.

Recorded in his shoebox bedroom – carpet drenched in guitar leads and off cuts – his voice pours out, rough and relatable. Setting itself apart from the Aotearoa indie scene, Oh My Darling will tug at your mind and soul. Whether it be intimate and seated, or sweaty and loud, Llewellyn will leave you feeling touched on his planned North Island tour later this year. You can find his tracks on Spotify and Soundcloud, or follow him on Instagram for more. www.tinyurl.com/5z2kjzpw www.instagram.com/michael_llewellyn_/ CHERISH | REVIEW

QUIET ROAD, BIRDSONG BUSH Words Alex Stone

It’s a good thing, say the locals, that Cowan Bay Road doesn’t reach the sea. That way, we don’t get hordes of visitors. We can do our own thing. Off state Highway One (soon to be a backwater country road itself), and halfway between Puhoi and Warkworth, the Cowan Bay Road strip has proven to be a perfect location for a neighbourly pest control peninsula. A wee mainland island. Towards the bottom end of the road is McElroy’s Bush – one of the most ecologically significant, original bush blocks left in the Rodney region. It’s closed right now, due to kauri dieback disease concerns – but that also helps with its recovery as a wildlife sanctuary. The residents of Cowan Bay Road banded together a few years ago to work collectively on pest trapping and they’re making great progress. It started with a lavish shared afternoon tea, and continues as bad news for pests. Part of this group are Barbara Hughes and Mick Cleland, dedicated conservationists operating out of their lovely new customdesign Lockwood home with its back-window views full-screen outlooks onto a fine bush block halfway up the road. Barbara’s day job is the educator for school student day trips to Tiritiri Matangi Island. Mick is retired from a working lifetime of air-conditioning engineering – but that doesn’t mean he’s slowing down. When he’s not kayaking the Mahurangi inlet, he’s working traplines in

their own bush, and for 2km (for now – more to come) along the edges of McElroy’s Bush. A good life, but not for the pest critters. Barbara and Mick are also careful collators of records and statistics. So far, on their own block, they have trapped hundreds of the hard-to-catch mustelids (stoats, weasels and ferrets), and “countless rats and possums”. The trick with the stoats is to place the trap on a known route, usually on a ridge line, to a water source. The McElroy trapline has been operational since last October, and together with neighbours Athol and Elke Keeling, and with permission from the Schollum family the farming land-owners, Mick has recorded these trapped: 77 possums, 18 hedgehogs, two stoats, one weasel, one ferret, five rats and one rabbit. The McElroy trapline comprises 22 Timms (possum) traps, eight DOC200 and three DOC250 traps. Auckland Council biosecurity staff continue pest control within the reserve, and have eliminated the (once impressively huge) goats that were roaming there. McElroys Bush is significant as a stop-over – or permanent habitat – for birds flying from the pest-free sanctuaries of Hauturu Little Barrier Island and Tawharanui. Mick sends the Cowan Bay trapline

recordings and bird observations to the Forest Bridge Trust (FBT), which is working on the notion of a bush corridor linking the northern sanctuaries to the Waitakere Ranges in the south-west. The FBT ran a trapping workshop in October 2019 for people along the road and issued traps to each landowner. Says Mick, “Barb and I have been trapping on our 16-acre patch of paradise since we bought it in 2004.” “One of my neighbours, who has been here about 20 years, has shot over 2,000 possums. Two of our other neighbours are trapping and dispatching Indian myna birds which are becoming a major pest.” The difference is certainly apparent. The wide repertoire of voices from the calls of kākā and tūī fill the soundscape of Cowan Bay Road skies. Kererū are everywhere. Barbara and Mick enjoy the company of a resident pair of the elusive wee tomtits. One indicator of the healthy bush there is the re-emergence of extra-ordinarily beautiful wee native orchids, which are usually irresistibly tasty to rats and mice. Cowan Bay Road is an unheralded, inprogress success story among New Zealand’s mainland islands. www.alexstonethinkingstrings.com
