MOON CALENDARS NZ Living your life aligned with the lunar cycles is not something new, in fact it is ancient knowledge that all cultures around the world have engaged with in one form or another. Claudia Moir has embraced this methodology and designed A4 wall calendars and A5 weekly diaries, both containing daily symbols that show optimal days for fishing, gardening and jobs around the house according to the moon phases. MAKING MEDICINE FUN What was originally Maisie Panoho's final project for her industrial design degree has recently been announced as the winner of the 2021 James Dyson Design Awards. Words Leah Botherway

With over 2,000 applicants worldwide, the James Dyson Design Awards celebrate and challenge young people to "design something that solves a problem”. These awards were created to allow applicants to make a name for themselves and generate media exposure, which will then hopefully kick-start their careers. This year's winner was the Hae Hae, a child-friendly asthma inhaler designed by Massey University graduate and Waipu local Maisie Panoho. The Hae Hae is the humble asthma inhaler reimagined and redesigned to make it easier and more effective for children to take their medicine. When Maisie initially created the concept of the Hae Hae, she drew on her past experiences of witnessing friends and family struggle with asthma. She learned that sufferers, especially children, find it

challenging to monitor their dosage and ensure they receive the correct amount required to keep their asthma at bay. Throughout her research journey, Maisie found that one of the main difficulties children face is the triggering function of a conventional inhaler. If triggered incorrectly, a person may not receive the full dose of their medicine, potentially being very dangerous. The Hae Hae has been cleverly designed to be triggered easily by both adults and children, ensuring that they receive the correct dosage. Maisie also focused on repairing the broken relationship between the inhaler and spacer. As a result, the Hae Hae's mouthpiece is more stable and secure when placed in the spacer. In addition, the canister is locked in place with keyhole access at the back that automatically opens when it's running low on medicine.

The Hae Hae features a built-in display that shows helpful information such as battery life, medicine available and how long to shake the inhaler to ensure the correct dosage and also has a fun reward system to encourage children to take their medication. And if that's not enough, it looks pretty darn cute too! Whilst asthma isn’t an issue for everybody, there are a huge number of sufferers both in New Zealand and worldwide, with over 262 million people affected across the world. Nationally, there are at least 110,000 children in New Zealand between the age of two and 14 who take medication for asthma, with more than 586,000 school days missed every year. It is the third leading cause of death in New Zealand. Once presented with these confronting facts, it shows how important the Hae Hae could be. By taking the chore element out of medicine and making it fun could be all it takes to ensure that children receive

the correct dosage and can manage their asthma. As the national winner, the Hae Hae will now move into the international rounds, where a panel of Dyson engineers will select the Top 20 finalists from around the world. Each of these 20 finalists will be entered into two categories – The International Award and the Sustainability Award. Sir James Dyson will handpick both winners from the list of selected finalists, each receiving NZ$59,000 in prize money. Maisie is now living back in Waipu, freelancing across the industrial design and digital print industries whilst she patiently awaits the announcement of the Top 20 on 13 October. All going well, Maisie will continue to wait until 17 November when the International Winners are announced. Whether or not she wins this international award, Maisie’s ultimate dream is to manufacture the Hae Hae and make it available to children across the globe. And, whilst the prize money of $59,000 would be a welcome addition to kick-start this journey, either way, Maisie has big plans to bring her concept to life. maisiedaisy22@gmail.com www.linkedin.com/in/maisiepanoho-868224215

THE FUTURA IS BRIGHT Tāmaki Makaurau based artist, Silas Futura (AKA Silas McClintock), grew up in Warkworth with an unconventional upbringing. He was homeschooled alongside his siblings by his mother and was exposed to music by both his parents at an early age. His first experiences with performance were formed here, busking outside the local supermarkets with friends. In 2016, he began taking music seriously under the name, ‘Bobandii’. The Bobandii project was heavily influenced by HipHop and Rap, and Silas continued to make projects under that name until late 2019. Over time, Silas found himself moving towards Jazz, Funk, Soul and RnB influences. With a love for Sci-Fi, he began experimenting with a fictional character ‘Silas Futura’, a Plutonian based in a future where humans have populated the solar system. The same systematic problems that we experience in today's culture are prevalent in Silas Futura’s fictional world, and inequality has become an even more overwhelming force. For Silas, this created a safe space to challenge present day issues within the world and himself. His debut EP, ‘Pluto’ marked the departure of Bobandii and the entrance of Silas Futura; this emergence brought with it a monumental shift for the artist, completely recreating his process of music production from the ground up. For Silas, a move in this direction was a move toward transparency and authenticity for himself as an artist.

Where Silas used to lean heavily into

electronic production, his new approach

has found him working with some of New

Zealand’s most talented musicians to bring forth a cacophony of sound - visiting Jazz,

HipHop, Funk, Soul and R&B along the way. The Pluto album was recorded, mixed and mastered at Red Bull Studio NZ by the

talented Ben Lawson. A fully live tracked

project with a strong influence of Neo Soul, Funk and Jazz, this album also features

some of Silas’ favourite musicians, from an incredible group of gifted jazz musicians on instrumentation to collaborations with

featured artists - Tei, Fable and PollyHill.

Silas is regarded within the community as a musician first, however his multidisciplinary approach to music is what sets him apart from the scene. Coming from the Mahurangi region has been a major influence on the way he approaches his work. One of the core kaupapa of Silas’ work is that the experience comes first, which shines through in the cult following he has created through the spectacle of his live performance and the use of extensive story worlds. His latest work, ‘Compulsion’ is an explosive, energetic track that draws on Funk and Hip Hop to challenge the status quo in a playful manner. Recorded with a live band and with the incredible vocal talents of both Silas and

Tei, this song is the standout track from the EP. Influences from Prince, the Red Hot Chilli Peppers (circa the 2000s) and Jamiroquai launch Compulsion into fresh territory, with a tempo that rivals the track. “I was quite uneasy when I wrote Compulsion,” he says. “I had no work and I didn’t know when I was going to get any. I was just writing every day, trying to look at the lack of work as an opportunity to stay focussed on music.” Silas found that he was writing a lot of melancholic music, “slow down-tempo kind of stuff”. “Then one morning I stumbled across this beat while I was playing the keys. And it turned that unease into energy - a lot of it,” he says. “It slowly evolved from there into more of a statement on the time in history we have been born into. Empowering and limitless in opportunity to learn anything you want, but also incredibly disempowering and unbalanced when it comes to financial stability and opportunity.” You can find Silas’ tracks on Spotify, or follow him on Instagram for more. www.instagram.com/silas_futura https://orcd.co/silaspluto

EDIBLE ART For as long as Linda Nienaber of Omaha can remember, she has loved food. Whether it’s cooking, baking, decorating or eating, food has always been number one. This love for food (combined with an insatiable sweet tooth) led to the creation of Huckleberry Hill Cakes. Words Leah Botherway Photos Charlotte Christian Photography

When Linda was a little girl, she loved to bake. She would spend hour upon hour in the kitchen trialling recipes, decorating cakes and, most importantly, taste testing. This obsession with baking and decorating continued into Linda’s adult life, and eventually, her family and friends finally convinced her to turn her hobby into a business. From there, she registered her kitchen with Auckland Council and Huckleberry Hill Cakes was born. The name Huckleberry Hill is one that is truly close to Linda’s heart as it’s named after her and fiancé, Jordan’s beloved English Bulldog named Huckleberry. Linda and Jordan then purchased their dream property and decided to call it Huckleberry Hill. Knowing that one day, this property would be where Linda would be creating her cakes, the name Huckleberry Hill seemed the obvious choice. With a number of delicious cake flavours and fillings to choose from, the cakes are available in various sizes and tier options. Linda insists on using top-quality ingredients throughout the bake, with the cakes then carefully decorated using fluffy American buttercream.

The most recent addition to Huckleberry Hill’s menu is Linda’s New York styled cookies. These wickedly indulgent treats are filled to the brim with chocolate and are worth every mouth-watering calorie. Baking for all occasions, from weddings to birthdays, the part that Linda loves most is the decorating. Using a range of different mediums, from decadent buttercream and ganache to fresh locally sourced flowers, the result is like a piece of art, and it almost feels criminal to cut. The other aspect of Huckleberry Hill Cakes that Linda can’t get enough of is the effect her cakes have on the recipients and the simple joy that one of her creations can provide.

What is currently a passion and a side hustle, Linda would love for this to one day be her full-time career, with the ultimate dream being to have a Huckleberry Hill Cakes store where people can walk in and experience her creations. However, for now, Linda will continue to create from her kitchen in Omaha, with Jordan and Huckleberry taking on the critical roles of ‘Head of Quality Control’. You can find them on Instagram @huckleberryhillcakes, or visit their website for more. www.huckleberryhillcakes.co.nz info@huckleberryhillcakes.co.nz

THE PERFECT BLEND Wine blending is a skill that each winemaker has in their bag of tricks to showcase their style of winemaking, and to enhance the quality of their wine. Most consumers are drinking blended wines without even realising. When drinking a glass of crisp Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, they may be drinking a blend of different vineyard blocks from Awatere Valley, which have been fermented separately, but blended together to make the final wine. More wellknown wine blends are Bordeaux blends consisting of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Or a classic Australian GSM, Grenache, Syrah, Morvedre. Whether winemakers are trying to “fix” a bad vintage or create consistency for their flagship wine, wine blending is an essential and fun part of their job. It happens at the end of the winemaking process before bottling. Wines may be

blended with the same varietal from the same or different vintage, or blended with other varietals that will complement each other’s flavour profile. The aim is to produce the best wine possible, keeping in mind to create a balance between flavours and structural elements on the palate and a wellrounded bouquet of aromas. Imagine a lab bench lined up with different wine samples as winemakers take their time to taste various blends and decide which one tastes the best and reflects the terroir of their wine growing region. Usually, the winemaker already has an idea of how the final wine should turn out. There are many steps in the winemaking process that will lead to the final envisioned product. For

example, how much oak influence the barrels should lend to a particular wine. In the wine blending stage, they can fine tune this for the perfect balance of fruit and oak characters. BUYING LOCAL JUST GOT MUCH EASIER The Good Food Collective is a premium online store that specialises in connecting discerning foodies with the very best food and beverage products that small to medium sized New Zealand producers have to offer. Leaving corporate life three years ago for land in Wharehine has led to some exciting challenges for newbie local farmer Fraser Brown. Looking for ways to grow his farm's potential has led to the launch of an exciting new website focused solely on local food and beverage. After many years travelling the globe selling New Zealand food products to far flung countries, Fraser wanted to spend more time with family and less time on planes. Purchasing a farm was a bit of an impulse decision but one that provided the muchneeded lifestyle change. Wanting to optimise the farm's output, Fraser and his wife started looking at options to increase productivity whilst looking after the land for the future. Understanding that reaching consumers directly with one or two products wasn’t going to be easy, Fraser started talking with other local producers about their views

on a potential web-based site that would collectively allow them to reach customers directly around New Zealand. All agreed they were time poor and found it hard to market and sell their products widely, and The Good Food Collective was born. Teaming up with ex colleague, design and marketing expert Dana Cocks, the team built a custom easy-to-use site locally. One of the critical aspects of the concept was the need for customers to view and purchase multiple products from multiple producers and then purchase in one seamless transaction, with the products then being dispatched directly from each producer. Being based in Wellsford, The Good Food Collective wanted to ensure that there was a foundation of local businesses on the site. Fraser says that it’s been especially rewarding to have a number of local producers join them including Salty River

Farms, Matakana Bacon, Sawmill Brewery, Te Whai Bay Wines, The Chocolate Barn and Estuary Olives. The site now offers a diverse range of food and beverage products from across New Zealand allowing small producers everywhere to connect with customers. There’s also the convenience of a gift voucher option. Geared towards discerning foodies, the team takes customer experience seriously with strict criteria for all products that are listed in the store. More than ever in today’s environment, consumers are wanting an assurance that a brand is New Zealand owned and operated and that its products are made largely with locally available ingredients which are ethically and fairly sourced. www.thegoodfoodcollective.co.nz www.facebook.com/ TheGoodFoodCollectiveNZ

COOKING WITH FUTURE FOODIES Future Foodies are introducing the next generation to super healthy foods and fun ways to cook. They share some of their favourite recipes with us here. FOCACCIA BREAD ART An epic science experiment with something delicious to show for it after all the mess is made. Not to mention, a beautiful blank canvas to decorate with colourful food and herbs you have at home. Putting the art in artisan bread this lockdown. Gigi is obsessed with pouring, so of course she was on measuring duty. Both Leo and Gigi loved watching the magic of the yeast foaming in the warm water while it ate all the sugars and let off carbon dioxide. They helped mix the dough, kneading it (and playing with it) until it was nice and smooth. Olivia (Mum) took care of the proofing and had them come back to decorate their bread before it went in the oven. As baking with kids goes, this recipe is definitely worth all the turn-taking and extra mess. Bless their chubby little hands for getting involved. This recipe will make one loaf of focaccia.

1 1/3 cup warm water (about 60°C)

2 tsp sugar or honey

1 pack active-dry yeast (2 + ¼ tsp)

3 1/2 cups flour

1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil, plus more for drizzling

2 teaspoons flaky sea salt plus extra for sprinkling*

Some red pepper/cherry tomatoes

Kalamata olives

Parsley/Basil/Mint

PROOF THE YEAST Add your warm water and sugar/honey to a large bowl and stir until the sugar has dissolved. Sprinkle the yeast on top of the water and give it a quick stir. Let this sit in a warm place for 10 minutes until the yeast is foaming. Let the kids watch the magic happen!

KNEAD THE DOUGH - Into your yeast mixture, gradually stir in the flour, olive oil and salt, until a dough begins to form. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead by hand for 5 minutes until smooth, adding extra flour if the dough feels too sticky. FIRST DOUGH RISE - Remove dough from the mixing bowl, and use your hands to shape it into a ball. Grease the mixing bowl with olive oil, then place the dough ball back in the bowl and cover it with a damp towel. Place in a warm spot and let the dough rise for an hour, or until it has nearly doubled in size. SECOND DOUGH RISE - Turn the dough onto a floured surface, and roll it out into a large circle or rectangle until the dough is about 2.5cm thick. Cover the dough again with the damp towel and let it continue to rise for another 20 minutes. PREPARE THE DOUGH - Preheat the

BAKE - Bake for 20 minutes, or until the dough is slightly golden and cooked through.

SERVE - Remove from the oven, and drizzle with a little more olive oil if desired. Slice, and serve warm.

FROM THE SOIL TO THE SPOILS Words Dan Auber

For Karl Nola, wine is in the blood. He remembers coming home from school and helping out around the vineyard. “My first job at 15 was weeding along the rows by hand,” he says. “There were 27 miles of them to do… it took months.” His parents, both of Croatian heritage, grew grapes down in Pukekohe and from that start Karl has never looked back, being involved in viticulture on and off his whole life. “Wine is a bit like music,” he muses, “you gravitate to what you like and you’re always learning.” After a career both on vineyards and in house building, Karl, his wife Sheelagh and their two boys started looking for some land to grow grapes on around Matakana in 2012. “We looked for about a year and there wasn’t much about, then Sheelagh saw a sign and we thought we might as well have a peek.” Within half an hour they’d decided it was the

22

SAVOUR

perfect spot, and that was before they’d even looked at the house! On the road to Leigh they found 24 hectares of land with half of it on sloping hills benefiting from plenty of sunlight. “With the clay in the soil round here you need something free draining to stop the plants getting wet feet,” remarks Karl. Within a year of that fortuitous beginning, the vines were planted, and the dream was taking roots. “We grow Syrah and Chardonnay because they both do well here, and also some less well-known varieties – Chenin Blanc, Marsanne (both whites) and Tempranillo (a red). I’ve always liked Chenin Blanc – it’s a honeyed white in-between a Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, and I knew the clay soil would give an earthy warmth to the reds.” Karl prefers the term “holistic” to “organic” - he

doesn’t use any pesticides or herbicides. “It’s all about the soil,” he says. “If you spray the weeds, you kill all the beneficial microbes that interact together to make a wine interesting. I feel like we’ve come full circle. We went through a period of using lots of chemicals in the eighties but now we’re looking at managing the land more like people did in the past – albeit with some better machinery.” And Karl’s not standing still. He’s put in a packing shed and is keen to start hosting public events based around the winemaking season. “It would be great to share this with people.” Until this gets off the ground, Nola wines are for sale both at the Vintry and at the Matakana Liquor Centre. Online sales and a website are also in the works so watch this space! www.nolavineyard.co.nz

ROCKIN’ IT Ray’s Rocket is a flourishing local business located halfway between Matakana and Warkworth, on the lovely hydroponic fancy lettuce farm, Home Fresh.

It was started by local farmer Ray Beamish midway through last year, after the first lockdown as a way to diversify his parent’s business and explore other nutritious greens that could be grown hydroponically. After trying numerous leafy greens in the hydroponic system, it was settled that rocket was the clear favourite, both to grow and sell in our local area. Back then it was more of a small ‘on the side’ kind of business as Ray was spending most of his time managing the lettuces for his parents and tending to his rocket after work hours. Local businesses such as Ravish, Wharf Street Bistro and Bridgehouse were amongst the first

24

to jump up and start using Ray’s Rocket in their delicious dishes and continue to support Ray today. From then the business has only grown. Ray now supplies his delicious peppery rocket to numerous retailers and businesses within the Warkworth region such as, 4 Square Matakana, New World Warkworth and Perfectly Imperfect Pizzas, as well as a few on either side of our gorgeous region such as Pak’nSave Silverdale and 4 Square Kaiwaka. With this more recent lockdown, Ray was concerned that sales may drop with local restaurants and businesses having to shut due to the Level 4 restrictions. However, Ray

has noticed just how popular his fresh bags of rocket are with our local community, with suppliers like 4 Square, New World, Pak’nSave and Perfectly Imperfect Pizza's taking a massive 70kgs plus of it a week! This is quite the jump from this time last year where Ray was only picking and selling approximately 10kg of rocket per week. Ray and his family are so grateful for the support from local businesses and the community, and look forward to seeing what the future brings for their hydroponic rocket business. www.facebook.com/raysrocketnz raysrocketnz@gmail.com

KEEPING UP YOUR SPIRITS Words Luke Williamson

“I always knew I would follow my dream of getting back to distilling when the rugby stuff came to an end,” says Ciaran de Vos of Boutique Bootleggers Distillery. Ciaran has been passionate about distilling spirits since he was a teenager. After an initial foray into sports science and working in professional rugby, Ciaran moved to Fiji for five years to work as a contract producer of rum. His parents have been living in Fiji for many years so it was a great place to raise the children and learn the ropes of large-scale rum production. Ciaran was hoping to grow his business in Fiji but decided a better plan was to return to New Zealand and make his products for export to Fiji. “I spent a lot of time making contacts with hotels and resorts in Fiji, lined up all my ducks, and then came back to New Zealand to set up my distillery. I was just getting going when we got hit by the first round of Covid, and then Fiji got hit. So, I had to rethink the plan.” Ciaran’s initial thinking was that the Fijian market would be enough to make the business work, but he’s looking at a bigger picture now. “I’ve made the distillery much bigger because I’m going to focus on the New Zealand market, and Fiji will just be a bonus when it becomes available again.” However, the uncertainties of Covid mean introducing the brand is currently on hold. “We’re fully capable now of producing our

products, but we’re waiting to launch the marketing until we know what’s happening with this outbreak. We are really hoping to officially launch in November, but we’ll just have to wait and see.” In a highly competitive market, Ciaran’s special selling point is the quality of Boutique Bootleggers spirits. “We’re working on a principle of harvest to bottle; sourcing all the best ingredients and botanicals we can, and using beautiful New Zealand water. It’s all hand-crafted, small batches, and double or triple-distilled. We’re doing it properly and not skipping any steps.” There is a base range of six different spirits, but Ciaran’s aim is to bring out specials every couple of months.

His approach to quality is reflected in the beautifully designed bottles. Ciaran wants to make them acceptable and presentable if you take your delicious hand-crafted spirits, instead of wine or beer, to a barbeque or friend’s dinner party. Once Boutique Bootleggers has officially launched, Ciaran hopes to have tastings at Kowhai Wine and Spirits in Warkworth, and visits by their promo car to local markets for sales and tastings. For anyone interested in sampling Boutique Bootleggers spirits, they are currently available at the Coffee Pot-tery Café at Morris & James. www.boutiquebootleggers.com www.facebook.com/boutiquebootleggers

SEASONAL GARDENING CALENDAR It’s official, spring has well and truly arrived. Time to get your summer vegetables like tomatoes, capsicums, sweetcorn and beans in the ground. Hopefully you are harvesting late winter plantings and enjoying the flush of spring greens. Words Geoff Ledbrook

TOMATOES Whether a sweet cherry tomato in a salad or a big juicy beef steak sliced on bread, tomatoes are big winners on the summer menu. They like sun, warmth and a free draining fertile soil with consistent moisture levels. Good air circulation, and low wind levels are also important. Ideally, grow your tomatoes in soil that has not had tomatoes or other crops from the Solanum family (potatoes, eggplants, capsicums) in the last year. Rotate your growing spaces to lessen soil borne disease. If you are short on space, you can also grow tomatoes successfully in big pots or bags. A more controlled environment like a tunnel house is perfect, particularly when we get wetter humid summer conditions. Tomatoes like potassium to be high in the nutrient mix you give them. A homemade seaweed/comfrey liquid fertiliser is a good option, as is a mature compost. Apart from the bush varieties like Roma, most tomatoes need support from a stake or trellis to grow on. As the plant grows, prune off the older lower branches to keep the plant open. Laterals that form between the main stem and the side branches should be pinched off when small.

You can buy rhubarb crowns from your garden centre or grow from seed. After planting let the plant get well established before harvesting stems. When flowering stems appear, remove them at the base and this will extend the growing season. Take care with the leaves as they are poisonous due to high oxalic acid levels, but they can go in your compost heap.

October sees a move away from early spring conditions towards the long warm growing season summer brings. This is likely to be the last month you sow the cooler climate loving vegetables like celery and fennel. With the soil warmer direct sowing into your garden is a good option. You can keep sowing brassicas like broccoli and cabbage, but you need a good strategy to control the white cabbage butterfly as this will be making its presence felt in coming months.

Keep an eye on soil moisture.

A SECLUDED PIECE OF PARADISE Imagine driving less than two hours and arriving at a property where, if you choose, you could not see another soul for the entire time you are there. Words Kate Moore

Whilst there, the hardest decision you will make is if you are going to bathe in an immaculately designed bathroom, which, during certain months has a view of an extensive wildflower garden. Or should you sit in a beautiful outdoor cedar tub that is constantly at 38 degrees and listen to the bird song whilst sipping on your beverage of choice. This exquisite 100 square metre dwelling sits in the middle of native bush and manicured gardens. Originally built using recycled wood off the main farm it was a place to store all the tools needed and for the constant repotting that is involved with flora and fauna - hence the name. However, once the owners realised how incredibly serene and relaxing the location was it was transformed into a meditation area and somewhere for them to escape the hustle. In 2020, it was decided that others should be able to enjoy this slice of paradise and the ‘shed’ was transformed into a luxury five-star cottage using local building company Bespoke Homes. The retreat was completely rebuilt and they added the bathroom and outdoor tub. An interior designer from Auckland

was commissioned to keep the relaxed feel flowing using quality furnishings and enhancing the laid-back sumptuousness. Outside, Mother Nature truly flaunts her gifts, not just through the picturesque gardens but also through the Native Bush. There are multiple walks that can be explored, one of the standout strolls will lead you to a place called ‘Picnic Point’. Here the bush opens, and you are rewarded with a view over Bream Bay and out to Whangarei Heads. One of the shorter walks (15 metres) leads you to a secret garden where at the push of a button a man-made waterfall springs to life and trickles down rocks to a pool below. If the ocean is your desire then you are treated to a private beach, Andersons Cove, which is 300m away, and boasts views out to the Hen and Chickens and all-day swimming. As The Potting Shed is one of only two properties that hold the riparian rights you are likely to be the only people present. Everything you need to enjoy the water can be provided including paddle boards and a dinghy. The ‘everything you need’ philosophy flows through every part that makes up The Potting

Shed experience and nourishment is the final piece of this equation. Breakfast ingredients are provided for all guests, and the fridge and pantry will be stocked for the full stay on arrival. Breakfast is typically made up of a selection of breads and spreads, free range bacon and fresh eggs, muesli, yoghurt and a selection of milks. Nespresso capsules and a selection of teas is also provided. All ingredients, where possible, are sourced from the farm itself which is home to extensive organic vegetable gardens, orchards and a berry house. Lunch can be prepared by guests themselves in house, or they can venture to one of the multiple café options that Waipu and Mangawhai offer. For dinner a three-course meal can be provided (on request) by local caterers, or again you can fend for yourself. So, venture north, kick off your shoes and enjoy the finer things in life while watching chickens peck, lambs frolic and scratch the tame Highland cows. Solve the great debate on which is better to bathe in - the hot tub or the bath. enquiries@thepottingshed.co.nz www.thepottingshed.co.nz

Wellsford Wastebuster Jerusha Tucker says she is looking forward to hosting this event: “Wellsford is such a cool little town, with such an amazing community interested in keeping the town rubbish free. I’m stoked we can bring another event that will contribute to this important mahi.” If you have a specialised skill and would like to be a fixer/volunteer at the Wellsford Repair Café, don’t hesitate to reach out. whizzes, bicycle or skateboard repairers, tag/tested approved electricians, furniture repairers, knitters/darners, etc. Wastebusters have organised a series of Repair Café events in Matakana, and now it’s Wellsford’s turn. They are hoping to host these events annually, with the next Matakana Repair Café being organised for early 2022. The Repair Cafés are part of a worldwide movement aiming to build a culture where repairing is the norm, rather than throwing things away at the first sign of a slight defect. Wastebusters aims to reduce waste by offering alternatives to the “throwaway culture” plus share repair knowledge, skills and build better community connections by hosting these events. The Repair Café will be a free, volunteer

based event where people can get together to share their repairing knowledge and skills. The way it works is people who enjoy fixing things and have a specialised skill (fixers) help people with broken items (visitors). The visitors are encouraged to learn and participate in the repair journey of their broken item(s). If your item can’t be repaired on the day, our fixers can offer you advice on how to prepare for repair. NEW BEGINNINGS, CHAPTER 2 With a collective 40 years of Interior and Spatial design experience between them, it’s easy to see why Deb Crowe and Nanda Rammers have become fast friends and work associates at Board & Batten Interior Design. As Deb begins to think about setting up in her new life down south, Nanda is also excited to be settling into her new life here in Rodney. With summer on the doorstep, Board & Batten have opened their doors to some exciting new projects. “If being in lockdown has shown us anything, it’s that people are spending more time thinking about ways they can upgrade their living spaces. It’s wonderful to work with Deb, and I’m thrilled to continue the incredible work that she’s done for so many homes in the area,” says Nanda. “There’s a lovely synchronicity in the way Nanda and I work, so I’m incredibly happy to have her here at Board & Batten. I’ve absolutely loved my time in Matakana. I’ve been lucky enough to meet some fantastic people, and to help redesign their interiors in beautiful ways. I feel very blessed to continue that work with Nanda now working alongside me,” adds Deb. As the area continues to grow, it’s so important to both Deb and Nanda that the boutique nature of both the business, and the area remains intact. “The district has an incredible feel to it, as business owners we really want to ensure that we work together to continue to build on that, and to ensure that this is a place we all still love living in, in the years to come.” If you’re looking for Interior design services, please contact info@boardandbatten.co.nz Deb Crowe – 021 521 811 Board & Batten - www.boardandbatten.co.nz

CLEANSE AND APPLY FACE OIL With clean hands and freshly cleansed skin, apply a generous amount of your favourite face oil or lotion to your entire face, neck and décolleté. This provides adequate slip to prevent any pulling or tugging on the skin. Begin by draining one side of the face with the massage movements, then repeat the entire sequence on the other side.

NECK AND JAWLINE

BEGINNERS GUIDE TO FACIAL GUA SHA Our faces reveal so much about our life story as well as the state of our internal health. And the good news is, beautiful, glowing skin can be achieved at any age and stage in life. Words by Amanda van Hoppe of Divinely Feminine

Aside from giving yourself good hydration, eating an antioxidant rich diet, and of course using good quality skin care products, it is possible to lift and sculpt the appearance of your face using a range of simple Facial Gua Sha massage techniques. Gua Sha tools and beauty rollers are commonly made of jade, pounamu or rose quartz crystal and when used correctly in gentle, sweeping movements they can help free up accumulated toxins, relieve puffiness, congestion, reduce dark circles, age spots, discolouration, as well as smooth wrinkles, release the fascia and increase your skin’s tone and overall radiance. Not only will your complexion look noticeably refreshed, but after ten minutes of a Gua Sha facial routine, you will feel amazing too! The key thing to remember when going through these motions, is to keep your movements working in harmony with the natural flow of the lymphatic system. This way you are moving any stagnant lymphatic fluid out of the face

It’s really important to start your movements at the neck and work your way up the face. This ensures your cervical lymph nodes can easily process the lymphatic fluid moving into them at a gradual pace without being overloaded. It’s also common to find congestion under the jawline which can be noticeably more textural than other areas of the face. Over time with regular drainage, this can even out.

and into the lymphatic ducts, where it will be transported and eliminated by the body as waste. Remember, the more gentle your strokes are, the more effective your lymphatic drainage will be. If you don’t have a Gua Sha stone or beauty roller, you can use your fingertips to gently glide over your face and still get all the benefits of a facial massage. Here’s a very basic self care guide for a Facial Gua Sha lymphatic massage.

NOSE AND EYES

Please note, this is a beginner’s guide to Facial Gua Sha and certain movements should be avoided if pregnant or on people who have recently had injectables or fillers administered.

FOREHEAD AND BROWS

For a professional Facial Gua Sha experience, book online with Amanda on her website, and learn about the range of organic skin care and Gua Sha products that would be best suited for your skin.

These movements are great for clearing sinus congestion as well as reducing puffiness and dark circles under the eyes. Move very lightly around the eye area as the skin under the eyes is fragile. Light pressure will also be more effective in moving lymphatic fluid that has been stagnant or congested.

Working on this area of the face can help smooth the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Movements across the brow and upper eye area will help lift and open the eyes, and massage around these acupressure points can be great for relieving stress headaches and tension being held in the face.

FEELIN’ GOOD Winter is a tough time for many of us to keep our health and wellness routines on track and again this year has pushed the limits for many of us. There has been so much uncertainty, change of routine, worry, work challenges, juggling children, closed gyms, exercise studios and limited access to some foods and basic necessities.

focus, drive and concentration then this is a must for you. The first thing you eat and drink in the morning will impact the chemical messengers in the brain.

If I had to name one of the most effective supplements a person could take that they can feel the difference in their body and mind within days of taking it, then it would be magnesium. It is one of the first minerals to be leached from the body during stress. Symptoms of low magnesium include anxiety, panic attacks, sleep issues, heart palpitations, sugar cravings, tummy fat and more. Lee-Anne is passionate about helping as

many people as she can to live their best lives, to feel their best, to look their best, to think their best and still get to enjoy those magic life moments many of us are missing out on because we are too busy or too stressed or simply so confused about what to do. If you are going to take the time to focus on yourself and improve yourself then she wants to help you make sure what you are doing is the best, most effective, easiest and sustainable thing you can be doing. “I am taking the confusion and frustration out of health and fitness for you, so you don’t have to spend hours trying to figure it all out,” she says. EARTHING YOURSELF Take a look outside from wherever you are reading this. Allow your eyes to gaze just for a moment on something natural, the green of your garden, the sky in its shifting landscape of colours and moods, a bird, your cat or even your houseplant. Nature. Earth. She is present with you. We in fact don't live on the earth – we live in the Earth; she is all around us – everything we have is made from her body. We are living, breathing and an intrinsic and inseparable part of her landscape and being. This is an irrevocable fact that we cannot separate ourselves from the very thing that we come from, that we are. Formed as earth, water, fire, metal and wood, we are electrical beings, made of pure energy, lifeforce and the elemental forces of nature - we are nature. We cannot separate ourselves from this, no matter how much concrete we pile on our driveways – the earth will and still does resound underneath and most deeply in our own hearts.

“The Earth is bigger than you, you may as well co-ordinate with it,” says Nancy StarkSmith, a dancer and co-founder of Contact Improvisation – a dance form that works with the laws of gravity and spiral to move in ways that seem impossible; to find fluidity, flow, fluctuation and flight amongst the restrictions of life on earth. So we must find a way to coordinate with nature, and in turn nature gives us everything we need to thrive, heal, live and love effectively. Living within her laws of ‘ayni’ (or reciprocity), everything that we take, we must return. Or from the opposite angle, everything we give returns to us somehow. What goes up – must come down.

So, what are we giving and what are we taking? And is there balance? These are questions to continually ask ourselves as we humans do this earth dance. It’s a reciprocal relationship and all relationships take time, connection and deep listening – they are not a one-way street. Our bodies work best when we are connected to the earth. Science acknowledges that even sitting or lying on the earth for 20 minutes reduces inflammation in your body and resets your nervous system. This is now the phenomenon called ‘Earthing’, although let’s face it,the Earth has always been here and it’s taking a while for science to catch up on the benefits of why we should cultivate this reciprocal relationship.

Plants are also hankering to help us heal. Most weeds in your garden are edible and hold the highest minerals and nutrient value, more than any cultivated plants. It’s time to tune into your lawn before you mow it, say hello to those nodding daisies (very good for toothache), tune into your heart and into the support and ground underneath you – do yourself a favour, get your bottom on the grass (or the beach). Mama earth is always available. Wilhemeena is a deep transformational healer and an international leader in wellness facilitation. LOVE MAKES A FAMILY Once upon a time, in 2005 to be precise, there were two men, and their names were Mark and Christian. Just like any good fairy tale they met (in a bar in Wellington) and fell in love. Their love, it turns out, will change the world. Words Kate Moore

Skip ahead to 2015 when Christian and

Mark decided they wanted to start a family and after countless hours of research,

consultations and then heartbreak as the duo discovered that adoption was not going to

feature in their story as no countries will allow same-sex adoption. So, in 2016, the fathersto-be turned to Facebook to help them in

their quest to find a surrogate. They launched a page titled “Baby Daddies Looking for

Kiwi Surrogate”, and after spending over

$50,000 and copious hours wading through

legalese and interviewing around 30 potential candidates, they were no closer to finishing

their quest. Then Aleisha entered the picture, and she was perfect and selfless in offering

her womb to grow a child. Having a tight and close-knit family is very important to all and their sister-in-law Alisa graciously donated

her eggs. On 6 June 2018 their son Frankie was born.

They found they had faced hurdles that no other parents-to-be go through. These included being interviewed countless times by a social worker and quizzed on every aspect of their lives, past, present and future. While Christian is very quick to point out that the counselling everyone involved in the process must complete is fantastic and extremely important, he believes that there is a lot that needs reviewing. So, Christian has submitted a change to the bill; the main points of contention are having the adoption process removed from surrogacy, having the quiz component removed and changing the ethics process. Stay tuned as the answer will not be provided until April 2022. Christian has also created a space which brings people together to make a family, aptly titled ‘Love Makes a Family’. On the platform people can either request help to grow their families (people looking for

a womb, sperm, eggs etc.) or to provide space for people offering their services to help a family grow. The website gives hope to those who struggle to make sense of it all and so people do not have to go through what Christian and Mark endured. There are success stories, from both sides of the equation, so if you need a feel-good moment check the website out. Christian says that “people are meeting” and he knows of at least five triumphs, as people have messaged saying their dreams are coming true. The website is run on donations so if you can donate, please do. Fast forward to the present day and Mark, Christian and Frankie are living their happily ever after and are also waiting to welcome to the world their daughter who is due later this year via another selfless surrogate. www.instagram.com/direct/t/lovemakes.family www.instagram.com/lovefromyourdads

IT’S A DOG’S LIFE Words Kate Moore

At the grand age of four, Axel has found what many of us struggle to find during our entire lifetime - his true calling. As a Belgian Groenendael Shepherd, you would imagine that this would be something athletic such as speed racing or agility training however, as Axel doesn’t really like walking, swimming, or moving in general (his ideal day consists of sleeping and receiving pats) his owner Ayla decided to look at training Axel to become a Therapy Dog, and for the past three years they have both worked with St John. The therapy pets program was started by the SPCA over 30 years ago and in 2003 SPCA partnered with St John to grow this service in the Auckland region and the rest of the country. In 2020, St John took on the sole responsibility for operating the service throughout New Zealand, and currently St John has 172 volunteers and their pets onboard (used to be called Outreach Therapy Pets) bring enrichment and joy to

people in need all around the country with regular visits to schools (where children can complete reading programs in the presence of the dogs which results in keeping the students calm and increases their reading skills), rest homes and hospitals. Ayla’s favourite thing about Axel being a Therapy Dog is seeing people's faces light up when they see him. One of her favourite memories is going into a rest home with Axel and there was a lady sitting there with a stuffed toy dog on her lap. “She couldn’t speak but was so excited to see a real dog and made her stuffed dog play with Axel, and you could just see that it made her so happy.” Ayla also loves taking him into schools where she lets the children ‘teach’ him a trick from his repertoire which could involve him shaking hands, weaving through legs, bowing, crawling along the ground, spinning, or waving. Allowing the children to teach him empowers them and Ayla finds

that withdrawn children often come out of their shells after a few sessions with Axel. When Axel is not “working”, you can find him on the floor of Ayla's shop in Mangawhai sleeping and waiting for his many fans to pop in for a snuggle. Even though Axel is extremely calm and gentle Ayla has a sign on the door and encourages kids to ask before patting him (as with any dog) as even though he is trained, he can become untrained. There are not many Therapy pets in the Kaipara region, so Ayla says that if your dog is relaxed and happy, please consider taking them to the Kaipara Dog Training Club which was one of the facilities she took Axel to. Axel has room in his schedule so if you have a group that would benefit from some Axel love then please email Ayla to discuss. aylamcrawford@gmail.com www.join.stjohn.org.nz/role/siid/uOll9/150

GATHERING A FOLLOWING A collective of 40 local artists is at the heart of the Mahurangi Artist Network.

Among the network you will find painters, printmakers, ceramicists, jewellers and resin, mixed media and textile artists at 24 venues from Mahurangi West to Wellsford and from Scotts Landing to Tawharanui.

Talia Russell is a Silk Screen Print Artist, specialising in large scale iconic landscapes. Her dramatic large-scale compositions are depicted in vivid colours, creating a picture window-like view. She is influenced by travel posters of the 1920s and 30s. This impacts on her work in the use of dynamic colours and compositions. Her hand pulled, limited edition silkscreen prints are frequently printed in both traditional colours and bright versions, creating two distinctively different images.

Alysn Midgelow-Marsden is an award-winning textile ‘polymath’, choosing materials and techniques that best suit the ideas she works through - often metal, wire and plastic. She develops wall based and sculptural forms which are complex and lyrical, with an enchanting fluidity. She wants the viewer to create personal and intimate connections

A WORTHY CREEK There’s much to see and learn on a mini-voyage up the Mahurangi Inlet - it’s a trip full of history and intrigue. You can do it by kayak or outboard-powered dinghy, up from Mahurangi Regional Park. Or even on a much bigger boat. Words Alex Stone | Photo Lesley Stone The Mahurangi River offers a serene cruising hideaway

This could have been the capital of New Zealand. In 1840, Governor Hobson sent Felton Mathew to investigate, and Mathew reported fulsomely on the sheltered Mahurangi Harbour, the 'profusion' of kauri on both shores. He thought it was 'admirably adapted for the site of a town'. He proposed the site of Brown’s Camp, opposite Scotts Landing. To get up the Mahurangi River, head due north from here. You’ll encounter channel markers about a mile up, beyond an oyster farm. Above Cowan Bay on your left is MacElroy’s Bush, a significant block of native bush. At this stage, the channel is wide and easy, but where it veers left, beware of a crosscurrent in the outgoing tide, caused by water emptying the inlet on your right which leads up to Snell’s Beach. Now it gets interesting. You may encounter a digger on a barge dredging in midstream. Clearwater Dredging, was commissioned

by community groups keeping the channel viable for recreational boats, for the Jane Gifford, and for clients coming up to Mahurangi Marina and Robertson’s Boatyard. They found the fund-raising hard, until a Government Covid lockdowns relief package got them digging again – for they were indeed ‘shovel ready'. Some turns of the marked channel appear scarily close to the shore. Trust them – they’re following the deeper water on the outside of the curve. After some private docks, we come to Mahurangi Marina and Boatyard. This seems to specialise in optimistic restorations of traditional boats. But walk a wee way in behind the crumbling cement factory ruins (hardly a testimony to their product), and there’s the superb swimming hole. It was once the limestone quarry for the works, but it has filled in with sparkling fresh water and a leafy green surround has grown around it. The swimming hole is deep, and so steepsided that in places you can dive in straight

from the shore. Young folks display by climbing up to a big willow on the far bank, and bombing in. Mostly, it’s a cool family hangout. From landward, the swimming hole is reached by following Wilson’s Road. The starboard side of the channel is mostly native bush all the way to Warkworth, dominated by large tōtara. At low tide, the mud banks are alive with crabs and lots of happy kingfishers. There’s one more bank-hugging turn to get to Robertson’s Boatyard. It’s a surprise to see a massive 85-tonne Travelift capable of lifting a boat of 8.5m beam (catamarans welcome) – and a lot more cost effective than the haul-outs in Auckland. We’ve seen some surprisingly big boats up on the hard there, Fullers Ferries, ocean tugboats, and commercial fishing boats. Then just a few more paddle strokes to get you to the kayak wharf and small-boat slipway at Warkworth. A worthy day on the water!

THE INTERSECT OF LAND AND SEA Words Georgia Third

As the days get longer and the beach more inviting, many of us may find ourselves peering into rockpools. The tidal heartbeat creates severe environmental changes for the creatures who call the intertidal zone home. They must adapt to fluctuations between dry and wet, hot and cold, salty and fresh. Despite these challenging conditions, there is a wealth of biodiversity to be admired, hiding in the rock crevasses.

The snakeskin chiton has a very in vogue snakeskin scarf wrapped around its shell. Chitons are ancient organisms, outliving the dinosaurs. Their resilience, mostly thanks to their armour-plated shell. Eight plates slot together, like those of a slater, to prevent rapid water-loss. This allows them to tolerate being out of water for significant periods of time, losing up to 75% of their body water and not breathing for two thirds of the day.

You’ve probably seen a decorator crab before and didn’t even know it. These crabs use Velcro-like bristles to cover themselves with seaweed as a camouflage. Most replace 10%-20% of this plant material daily and when they shed their shell, they sometimes transfer the best material to the new shell. They’re a slow-moving crab with weak claws which reduces their diet options to only dead or dying material.

Triplefins are an iconic tidepool fish, but many Kiwi’s may know them as cockabullies. New Zealand is home to 27 species and one sixth of the world’s entire triplefin family! Unlike most fish, this small species don't have swim bladders to aid buoyancy, so they use their fins to rest on the bottom of rock pools. If you’re lucky, in a big pool, you might be able to find a common octopus. A pile of

shells from previous evening’s dinners often marks the entrance to an octopus den, where they hide during the day. Swaying in the water, surrounding the tide pool creatures, are seaweeds in all shapes and colours. Rubbery sheets, wispy filaments, hard branches or even sacs in a riot of pinks, greens and browns. Encrusting red coralline algae doesn’t even look like seaweed, rather a coating of pink paint on the rocks. On popular beaches hundreds of people walking along the same patches of rock can change distributions of immobile species. To protect your feet and the ecosystem, try to enjoy these wonders of nature from bare patches of rock, to ensure these prehistoric relics live on to delight future generations. georgia.third@niwa.co.nz DISCOVER

CLASSICS AT THE COVE 2021 Now in its eighth year, Classics at the Cove is an annual event with the aim of furthering the musical journey of their performers through study scholarships. Opera North have always played a role in the show whether it is with a featured emerging talent/soloists from the choir or a rousing choral ensemble. In the last few years, Classics at the Cove has contributed to the training and development of singers such as Ridge Ponini. Ridge started his Opera training at Otago University after his teacher heard him singing in the corridor of his school in Rarotonga. They flew Ridge up to Waipu to sing with his idol - Whangarei’s Internationally acclaimed Opera singer Kawiti Waetford, at Classics at the Cove in 2017. He has returned every year since and has an Honours degree in Music from the University of Otago. After competing in various competitions he was named ‘the Most

Promising Singer’ and presented with the ‘Judges Choice Award’ in the Dame Malvina Major Foundation Aria in Dunedin. In 2018, he was awarded the prize for the singer with the most potential in the McCormick Opera Award. Other previous guest artists of Classics at the Cove include Joel and Maia Amosa, with Joel going on to win the Lexus Song Contest 2019 after his appearance at Classics at the Cove. Alofa - the Fonoti Fuimaono brothers, and Katherine Winitana, are to be accompanied by Ben Kubiak whose work spans multiple instruments and genres. He is currently completing his PhD in musicology at the University of Auckland and is an artist with the 2021 Dame Malvina Major Foundation Studio Artist Program along with Katherine. In the past Dave Brown and Debi Walters-

Brown have run the event on a shoestring budget to ensure that the singers benefit as much as possible. Increased interest and rising popularity of the event has led to a need for improved facilities to keep up with the calibre of performances presented. As a result, extensive development has taken place on the property and they welcome being able to deliver the event in an upgraded performance stage space and tiered grass audience area overlooking beautiful Bream Bay. Emma Couper, Waipu’s stunning local soprano singer and teacher, is the Musical Director and Conductor this year. This year Classics is presented in association with Barfoot and Thompson who have kicked off with the purchase of 100 sponsor tickets. www.eventfinda.co.nz/2021/classics-at-thecove/whangarei-district
