Plunket fundraiser

The community of Mangawhai came together on 31 August to raise much needed funds for Plunket by holding a morning tea at Oasis Bar & Eatery organised by Amanda Bond from Bayleys Mangawhai.

A great day was had by all with barista-made complimentary coffees and Arnott’s biscuits. The business community of Mangawhai helped amazingly by donating hundreds of dollars worth of prizes for a raffle which was drawn on the day. From this raffle and money donations, $1,000 was donated to Plunket.

I speak for the sea

From Long Island, New York to Auckland, Sara Kulins is dedicated to unveiling what’s going on under the big blue blanket that is our ocean.

How did your passion and love for the ocean begin?

My Dad liked to go fishing from the shore in Long Island, New York where I grew up and he would always bring me along. I’d collect shells and when he used an umbrella net to catch bait I would look through the catch; sorting things into buckets and just watching all of the fish and crabs. That’s where it all started really, through observation.

What brought you to New Zealand?

During university I studied abroad in Australia and completed my open water diving certification - Scuba diving is what truly ignited my passion for marine biology. At the end of my undergrad I learned about the marine lab, right on the edge of

Goat Island marine reserve and became determined to get there. I applied for a marine science studentship through the University of Auckland, which I thankfully got because I’d already booked my flight!

Where has your career in Marine Biology taken you?

I started as a volunteer when I first arrived at Leigh Marine Laboratory and my experiences diversified as I assisted researchers in the field and in the lab. Later, during my summer studentship I also got a job at Goat Island Dive & Snorkel, working in the shop and building up my diving skills. I then applied to work at Sir Peter Blake Marine Education and Recreation Centre in Long Bay. Starting as an outdoor educator, I led

kids' experiences in and around the water; and even got the opportunity to learn how to sail. Now, six years on, I manage education and outreach which includes marine environmental education for school aged youth and various public engagement events.

What inspired you to create your blog, I Speak for the Sea?

As American marine biologist Sylvia Earle says “you have to know something before you can care about it.” There are many people that don’t get to see below the surface of the ocean so I was really interested in creating a public platform to share my passion for the ocean and underwater experiences. I want to inspire and empower others to make changes to reduce their impact on the environment.

Do you have plans for what’s next for you and I Speak to the Sea?

I’ve just finished my Masters in Marine Science and attained my Scientific Diver Certificate, so I’m looking forward to the work this will enable me to do. Since embarking on the journey to advocate for the sea I’ve realised that it will always be an evolving project, but I look forward to connecting with people in the community again like I was doing pre-pandemic through talks and workshops. Engaging the public in more citizen science is also something I’m really passionate about as the efforts contribute to a greater knowledge base which helps provide evidence for change.

What’s one thing we can all do to protect our ocean?

Discover spirit of Te Arai

Words Shannen Frear | Photos Robinson Studios 36 holes, 2 golf courses, 110 rooms a slice of seaside paradise. Discover spirit of The most magnificent, tranquil it's right in our backyard.

Te Arai Links encompasses a North and South golf course designed by worldrenowned golf architects Tom Doak, Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. It is rare for these architects to work together - making this project even more special.

The course is every golfer's dream come true, a location with extensive cultural history and extraordinary coastal beauty. Exposed sand, coupled with firm and fast fescue turf. Visitors will find themselves enjoying a game while hearing the sound of the waves crashing nearby, all while the smell of sea salt air dances alongside. It is one of those special places, that when you visit once, you want to return with friends and family so

that they can also experience the wonderful moments that Te Arai Links offers.

As well as an unforgettable and unique golfing experience, this isn’t all that Te Arai Links has on offer. After a day in the sunshine putting balls with your pals, enjoy a meal at Ric’s Pizza Barn and settle all your golfing debates over a cold beer. Accommodation is also available on site - guests have the option to choose between suites, cottages and villas. Picture sleek joinery, contemporary details and a colour palette that draws on nature and works seamlessly with its environment.

The space will open on Monday 26 September

this year for members and on Monday 1 Octobe r for resort guests. In year one the location will be open to members, guests of members or hotel residents. Once the North course opens in October 2023, the courses will toggle back and forth between members and the public, and the public will be welcome to play at th e course.

Jim Rohrstaff, Te Arai Links managing partner, mentioned that Ric Kayne, Te Arai Links and Tara Iti developer, has a love affair with New Zealand and wanted to do something that would leave a lasting legacy. “Ric and I looked at Te Arai Links as a oncein-a-generation opportunity to do something this special in golf,” says Jim.

Te Arai Links will provide a huge amount of employment to the local community (around 200 jobs, not including the caddies and subcontractors). New jobs and new people in the community, in turn, means more people for local businesses to serve. With multiple golf courses on offer in the area, the founders of Te Arai Links hope that long term the region becomes a special golf destination for all.

“We cannot wait to see the smiles from everyone who visits, both locals and tourists. Those that have stopped by so far have all had the same reaction - they are stunned by the scale of Te Arai Links and the beauty, and their eyes are just darting around taking it all in,” says Jim. “We are golf junkies ourselves, so seeing everyone else’s reaction to Te Arai Links fills up our bucket.”

5.5 kilometres of coastline, activities for the whole family, unique architecture, high-level warm service, world-class facilities, open to the local community, the world's biggest putting green and only a 75-minute drive from Auckland CBD - Te Arai Links promises to be a world-class golf destination that will leave members and guests with lifelong memories.

Rush Coffee

More than a cottage industry, Rush Coffee is roasting half-a-tonne of coffee a week to meet demand. Central to the operation are two fully automatic roasters, which enable Rush Coffee to maintain the consistency and quality of the blends. "Operating the business in a rural environment has its unique challenges," says Emma. "The scenic beauty comes with the risk of an irregular power supply. Our roastery power runs off a large UPS (uninterrupted power supply) which can last for 40 minutes until we get the generator up and running. The coffee keeps on coming!"

Rush Coffee continues to be sought after because the quality of the roast and taste is consistently excellent. That quality is recognised both nationally and internationally with Rush Espresso being New Zealand’s most awarded coffee blend – five gold medals! Other blends include Organic Rush,

How do you like your coffee? For the past 15 years, local coffee roaster, Rush, has been producing exceptional, award-wining coffee at their lifestyle block in Te Arai. It’s a family business run by Hayden and Emma Prujean, plus daughter Betsy and son-in-law, Aaron.

Zingaro, Adrenalin Rush and Rush Free (decaffeinated) which have also collected awards along the way. You can read all about the characteristics of the Rush blends on the website and find the one that suits you.

Fridays at the roastery are dedicated to making sure there is plenty of fresh coffee packaged and ready for the Saturday morning market at Mangawhai Village where Hayden and Emma have had a stall for 14 years. Locals can be seen using a variety of containers to collect their coffee – re-filling coffee bags is common and rewarded with a small discount.

As part of that effort to be environmentally responsible, Hayden and Emma have invested in compostable coffee bags –truly home-compostable. "It’s been a very expensive exercise," explains Hayden, ‘but, in the end, we felt like we had no choice if we wanted a clear conscience. Also, our

customers are becoming more aware of their 'footprint', and they want their suppliers to behave in a more sustainable way.’

Another defining feature of Rush Coffee is bags marked with a ‘roasted on’ date, rather than ‘best before’. Emma explains, "A lot of competing brands use the 'best before' date but you have no idea how old the coffee actually is, whereas, with Rush Coffee, you know exactly when it was roasted. It’s just one of the things we do to look after our customers the best we can and to set ourselves apart."

Customers frequently ask how they can get the best out of their coffee once they get it home. "There are so many different ways to make coffee and everyone seems to develop their own favourite technique," says Hayden. "Make sure your coffee is freshly roasted when you buy it – that’s the fundamental key to success," he says. "Use a good quality

12 ADVERTORIAL

burr grinder and, to the surprise of most people, leave the water to rest for a minute after boiling before pouring it onto your coffee. That stops it from burning the coffee. And store the coffee in an airtight container at room temperature."

Rush Coffee bags have been engineered specifically to keep coffee fresh so they’re great for storage, but talk to Hayden and Emma for the best tips and tricks for your particular set-up. In the end, it’s really just drink and enjoy!

Selling direct to customers is always satisfying, particularly when you get to know the regulars at the market and on deliveries, but Rush Coffee can also be found in dozens of cafés between Kaitaia and Taranaki, and even as far north as Rarotonga! There’s always a little pang of relief and joy when you pull up to a café and realise they are using your favourite brand.

For hospitality suppliers, Rush Coffee makes great sense as well. They can handle any volume of beans required, consult on and supply appropriate coffee-making equipment, and they offer an outstanding maintenance and repair service – no having to wait days for assistance when your machine has an issue. Local, experienced and highly responsive are the key words. The website has all the information any frustrated caf é owner could need to help make that decision to change supplier. You’ll be doing yourself and your customers a favour.

While Rush Coffee is out there competing with some of the big names, they make sure to keep it local as well with support for community projects in the Rodney and Kaipara regions. "We regularly donate coffee to local community groups, both for their own consumption and for fundraising," says Emma. "We do a lot of these donations

because we feel like it’s important to give back to the community that supports us."

Recently, Rush Coffee was the main sponsor for the Mangawhai Players’ production of Under Milkwood. A Rush team took part in the Chopper Challenge at Matakana, fundraising for the rescue helicopter, and they support Kaipara and Mahurangi Wastebusters in their efforts to make our communities m ore sustainable.

In the end, all we can advise is that you buy some Rush Coffee, try it and you probably won’t look back. The online ordering process is easy, and Rush Coffee is available in most local supermarkets, 4 Squares, local cafés and a range of other outlets conveniently listed on the website. Getting hold of it is not the problem - drinking anything else once you’ve tasted it can be an issue.

Cupcake queen

After close-knit Cakery fame, the beachside town

Words Milly Nolan

To say that the last decade has been busy for Karla Goodwin is an understatement. Having learned her craft as a baker while living in London - where she worked in one of the UK's most prestigious cupcake bakeries, Primrose Bakery - Karla returned home to New Zealand in 2011, and not long after, opened her first Bluebells Cakery store in 2012. Since then, Karla and her partner Ryan Sharma, have grown their empire to include an online store, three boutique cafés/stores across Auckland City, a catering offering, as well as penning two cookbooks (with a third to be released next year) – all while raising their two small children. Last year, the couple celebrated ten years in business – a milestone in particular for Karla who started the business on her own as the sole employee, often working into the wee hours of the morning to meet the popular demand for her picture-perfect and delicious tasting cakes, cupcakes and sweet treats.

As with many other businesses, the pandemic was a tumultuous time for Bluebells Cakery and with the Auckland lockdowns came the temporary closure of the Hillsborough and Kingsland cafés, and the opening of their new Commercial Bay store was also delayed by several months. "We were lucky that our online store was already so well established

so we could still provide customers with our sweet and savoury options delivered to their home. It was nice knowing we could brighten someone’s day in those rather long and oppressive lockdown months," says Karla.

Along with the business stress, what the pandemic also highlighted for the young family, was the need for an escape from the daily grind. Given Ryan’s mother and stepfather have lived in the Mangawhai region for over twenty years, the couple were no strangers to the area, visiting frequently. “We would often spend our summer holidays there, so that is how we fell in love with the place,” says Karla. “At the beginning of 2021, we decided to buy land and build there –with the idea that one day we will hopefully relocate. We love that it’s only an hour and a half from Auckland. If it was any further than that, it would be too difficult for us to get to. Being so busy with the business, it’s important for us to have an easy escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

A builder by trade, Ryan’s step-father, Gary Lister, built their dream house for them –his final project before retiring. Employing Gaylene Rodgers of Camphor Tree Studios to design the house, Karla says “we wanted the house to blend in with the others in the area. We went for black cedar on the outside, and kept it light, fresh and bright on the inside. A modernised coastal vibe, without being t oo beachy!”

What appeals the most to Karla and Ryan about Mangawhai is the quiet life that it provides. “It’s where we can really focus on family and quality time together,” reflects Karla. “The surf beach is beautiful and then you’ve got the estuary which is great for kids. It’s just a really lovely community and the locals are so friendly and welcoming. It truly is our happy place.”

Josh Hazel’s love of food started early in life. Australian born and bred, the biggest influence on his choice of career was his mum, whose cooking inspired Josh to start a kitchen apprenticeship in Canberra at just 15 years of age.

Once a qualified chef, Josh worked in kitchens across Australia, before heading to London. Upon settling in Auckland with his kiwi wife, Josh joined the team at Soul Bar and Bistro where he worked for five years prior to joining Rothko.

Josh’s food philosophy is simple – it’s all about the produce. He endeavours to use the freshest ingredients, locally sourced where possible, to deliver delicious, interesting dishes that guests will love.

Leading the design of Rothko’s seasonal menus and creating monthly dining experiences such as The Art of Degustation are rewarding aspects of his job, however what’s most important is having people enjoy his cooking. “If the customer is happy, then I am happy.” says Josh.

He creates his menus utilising the freshest, seasonal produce at the peak of its flavour. He enjoys working with Asian and Italian cuisine profiles. “I love experimenting with these flavours to create new food avenues to explore.”

“Mike and Lloyd are more than just my employers; they are amazing people who genuinely care for their staff and work very hard to make their businesses a pleasant experience for customers and staff alike”, says Luke.

Italian in the Village

Authentic Italian pizza, made with a family dough recipe all the way from Positano in Italy, is popping up in Matakana. With a mobile pizza oven that can travel Auckland wide, it’s the perfect addition to your next event.

When Bernardo decided to start his pizza making business in Matakana, it began with a trip to Christchurch in order to bring an essential piece of equipment to its new home. Together, Bernardo and his pizza oven journeyed the length of the country, by road and ferry, to embark on his new venture, aptly named ‘Italian in the Village’.

After a move north two years ago, with his Kiwi wife and their two young boys, the pizza oven trailer was the family’s first possession to arrive at their new home. It was also the first step in ensuring Bernardo’s dream of running his own catering business could become a reality.

From humble beginnings in Positano, Italy, Bernardo used to enjoy spending time in the kitchen with his Mother. Creating authentic Italian dishes and perfecting the family pizza dough recipe, which was passed down by his Grandmother. With only a wood fired oven in the kitchen - which stayed burning all day - cooking was an ongoing activity for young Bernardo. Not surprisingly, this led to a career in the food and restaurant industry that has spanned various experiences and countries, from working with a friend at his pizzeria in Sorrento, Italy, to Don Alfonso’s Michelin Star restaurant and most recently Helena Bay Lodge in Northland. Inspired by his Italian heritage and catering experience, Italian in the Village was born. Specialising in intimate private events all over Auckland, Bernardo says he can hide in a corner with his pizza oven or be front-and-centre in your kitchen - whatever you prefer!

Using only the best key ingredients; the flour, oil, tomatoes and mozzarella are all from his native Italy. All other ingredients are locally sourced. While the focus is on pizza, with true classic Italian flavours such as Margarita and Marinara, Bernado’s catering can extend well beyond pizza with access to a domestic kitchen. Think lasagna, Arancini, croquettes and meatballs - Bernardo will work with you to create your perfect Italian menu.

Having recently returned from a two month trip to Italy, which included weekend work at a friend's pizzeria - so as to not lose his connection to the oven, he says - Bernardo is ready to bring his authentic Italian flavours to the locals. But with a wait time of 48 hours for the pizza dough to rise, 24 hours at an absolute minimum, this traditional process means pizza numbers are limited, so you’ll need to be quick! In his own words, “never will you see Bernardo with 5 00 pizzas”.

Contact Bernardo to discuss your event requirements and stay tuned on Facebook for the next public appearance by Italian in t he Village.

Roadside goodness

After hearing Bree talk about selling her excess flowers, fruit and vegetables for a few months, husband Dylan decided enough was enough. “He built the stall one lockdown afternoon, so that I had no more excuses,” laughs Bree.

It was just the push she needed. Initially nervous about sharing her flowers and products with the local community, she figured she’d have to put something on the shelves, so she began with jams, pickles, preserves and small posies.

It didn’t take long before the stall started to sell out and Bree began finding notes in the

honesty box - handwritten confessions from people who had bought a couple of jars of pickles or jam, one for themselves and one for a friend, but had ended up eating both. “Do you have any more?” they’d ask.

Fast forward a year and, just like her garden, things have grown organically, with larger bouquets, small-batch goodies, seedlings and unique botanical beauty and wellness products all for sale at 160 Ti Point Road and soon-to-be online.

Like Bree’s garden, The Humble Pantry’s offerings are unique and always changing with the seasons. Bree loves to spend time

experimenting and creating new products, using homegrown produce and blooms as a base for her nature-inspired creations.

A background in advertising and marketing has helped grow The Humble Pantry but it’s childhood memories of freshly picked blooms and meals made from the family’s Ti Point garden that inspire Bree the most and keep her looking for new ways to share what she grows. Cocktail syrups made with roses or blue pea petals, homemade mulled winemaking kits and fruity and floral herbal teas are the most recent additions to the stall.

‘Tub teas’ are also popular, taking the mess

Unforgettable tastes

Since selling her business earlier this year, Vicki Niethe has had the opportunity to step into a new venture which involves something that she has always loved, and that is food.

As a child growing up in Devonport, North Shore, Vicki’s father, a steward in the Royal New Zealand Navy, would serve up a batch of fresh hot chips cooked in beef drippings. To Vicki, the smell is unforgettable and the taste memorable. Cooking seafood and chips in beef drippings is an old traditional way of cooking, and one that Vicki wishes to continue with her food truck, Fr itter Shack.

Fritter Shack was born in late 2021 with the help of Ivana Gardner at the new Matakana

Country Park Markets. The mussel fritters on offer were a hit, not lacking in taste or size. Having the stand introduced Vicki to the wonderful community in Matakanaregular customers began popping in for their morning brunch and a long chat on what was happening in the world.

Following her success at the markets, Vicki started looking into food trucks or trailers to make the venture a more serious one. She finally found a food truck which was just the right size.

Currently Vicki has ‘test’ evenings with fellow locals whereby her so-called ‘guinea pigs’ come over for a free meal and give feedback on what is good and what needs to b e tweaked.

Vicki is hoping that when she opens Fritter Shack to the public in October, that she will satisfy everyone’s taste buds with her delectable mussel fritters and other culi nary delights.

The Olympics of butchery

The World Butchers' Challenge is a butchery competition of epic proportions with butchers from across the globe battling it out for the title of the world's best.

Originally the World Butchers’ Challenge started in 2011 between New Zealand and Australia, named the Trans-Tasman Test Match. Since then it has grown and this year there were 13 countries participating in the Challenge which was held for the first time on American ground in Sacramento, California in September.

The concept of the World Butchers' Challenge is to develop an environment where butchers strive to exceed current industry practice in the areas of general workmanship, meat cutting, displaying and the creative usage of beef, lamb, pork and chicken products.

Junction Magazine interviewed Dan Klink of Mangawhai Meats about his involvement in the competition.

Tell us about the competition at the World Butchers’ Challenge?

The competition itself is conducted over a three hour and thirty minute period with competing teams given a side of beef, a side of pork, a whole lamb and five chickens which they must then transform into a themed display of value-added products. Teams are allowed to provide their own seasonings, spices, marinades and garnish to finish products that are designed to inspire and push the boundaries, yet which are also cookable and would sell in a retail setting. Independent judges score each team based on technique and skill, workmanship, product innovation, overall finish and presentation.

How did you become a member of the New Zealand team, the Hellers Sharp Blacks?

The seven team members are picked based on their outstanding butchery skills as well as their past achievements. People are also chosen based on how they will dynamically work together under pressure and what team member strengths complement each other. This year we had a great team captain and a united group of butchers. Getting to know the team members and building quality relationships with each other really helped with our successes.

How did you prepare for the competition?

We trained for about six months prior to the competition. Every three weeks I would go down to Auckland. The first few practices were just getting a game plan together and working out the product we were going to create. From there, it was a full run through of all the cuts and as we got closer, we started timing our practices to make sure we could achieve what we needed to achieve in the set time.

Does being a New Zealand butcher give you any advantages?

I think so because the way that they score the competition is based on a New Zealand competition. We are more attuned to do that style competition; such as not having waste, and being clean and tidy. This has always been drilled into us. On the flip side, other countries have much bigger budgets to transport equipment. It was always in the

back of our minds that it wasn't the end of the world, if we had forgotten to bring something or we were missing an ingredient because we can just wing it. It's in our kiwi nature to just go with whatever is thrown our way and not freak out at this kind of thing. We just adapt and work with what we have.

How did you feel to receive third place and to represent your country?

Blown away. At the end of the day, we would have been happy with just representing New Zealand and achieving what we wanted to, but to place on a world scale was just epic. We celebrated the true kiwi way, it was Labor Weekend in America - the awards finished, the bars were shut so we went back to the hotel and had a massive feed of McDonald's.

What was your best takeaway from the experience?

The experience has opened my whole world up to the industry. We always think it is quite a small industry but this competition really broadens your horizons to how massive butchery is, and how well the industry is doing which is so cool to see. Originally they started the competition because they wanted to highlight the craftsmanship of the industry. It is cool to see after years and years it is coming into its own. I was blown away with the encouragement we received from the community, this was one of the biggest things for me, we had so much support backing us here in New Zealand.

Good energy home loans for solar power

Want a new solar power system or Tesla? Thanks to New Zealand banks jumping on board the renewable energy bandwagon – a solar power system and Tesla are now more achievable than ever, with new sustainable home loans announced this year.

It comes at the right time too, as the cost of living reaches an all-time high. This incentive will help homeowners reduce their power bills and costs at the pump with rene wable energy.

Banks like ANZ, Westpac and Kiwibank introduced the low interest rate home loans so homeowners can upgrade their homes to make them warmer, drier and reduce carbon emissions. Upgrades include but are not limited too; a solar power system, electric vehicle, heat pump, double glazing, insulation and/or rainwater tank depending on the loan limit.

ANZ’s Good Energy Home Loan launched in July 2022 lets homeowners borrow up to $80,000 at one percent interest rate over three years. While Westpac’s Warm Up loan is interest free for up to $40,000 for five years. And Kiwibank’s Sustainable Energy Loan contributes $2,000 over four years if you

borrow more than $5000 towards solar power.

“This is a very exciting time” says Director Tim Dudek from Solarcraft – solar power installation specialists and proud partners of the sustainable home loans. “For years, the solar industry has been wanting solar power to be subsidised by the New Zealand Government as it has been in Australia. For New Zealand banks to start this initiative it is a massive step forward for solar in New Zealand” explains Tim.

According to the Australian Government, solar power systems generated approximately ten percent of Australia’s electricity in 2020-2021. And more than 30% of Australian households have a rooftop solar PV system. Now more Kiwi homes will be able to go solar.

Solarcraft are working closely with banks and their customers wanting solar. “Every home and roof is different, so each system

needs to be bespoke every time” says Tim. “High quality products with warranties, like SunPower Solar panels, will be efficient and long lasting while nicely complementing the aesthetic of homes”.

Would you like to find out more about clean energy home loans and solar?

Solarcraft is based in Silverdale, Auckland and are experts in off-grid, hybrid, and high end residential/commercial systems with over 11 years experience. To learn more about your energy consumption and the most costeffective system for you; contact Tim and the team at Solarcraft for a complimentary consultation and design proposal.

Wow, feel the energy in your garden. Get those gardening gloves on. It’s time to plant summer vegetables like tomatoes, capsicums, and beans. Keep on top of weeds too! Crops like onions and garlic planted in early spring will benefit from a clean-up to keep them growing strongly.

Beans

Beans, beans, wonderful beans, the more you eat the better you feel. Easy to grow and store, this amazing family of plants is a must have in your garden. Both climbing and dwarf bean varieties will grow easily from seed from mid-spring to late summer. Their big-sized seed makes them ideal for direct sowing between 2 and 5cm deep. A good rule of thumb is to sow at twice the depth of the seed size, so the bigger the bean, the deeper it goes. They will germinate well in soil temperatures above 16 degrees celsius.

Climbing beans need a trellis or tepee to grow up. Most varieties will grow to 2.5 metres high. They are vigorous growers, so make your bean growing structures sturdy and high. Most of you will have room for only a few climbing bean plants and this will give you a steady supply to the kitchen. There are many varieties to choose from and much of this comes from personal choice. If I had to pick two varieties it would be flat podded and amazingly tasty Scarlett Runners, and the tender cylindrical green bean Blue Lake. Both are durable performers. The Scarlett Runners will die down in autumn and grow from their root system again in mid-spring. They should continue doing this for at least several years. Other climbing varieties include Fardenlosa, Neekar Golden Runner, King of the Blues, Lazy Housewife, Lima de Papa and Italian Flat. The Italian Flats have big fleshy pods and when picked young are sweet and tender. Lima de Papa is a shell out bean that produces large butter-like beans but needs lots of heat to do well.

If you have a smaller garden or want to plant early into a tunnel house, then the dwarf varieties may suit you better. Most of these still need a low trellis to grow on, but they take up far less space. Varieties to plant include Top Crop, Borlotto Fire Tongue, Roquefort, Faraday Dwarf and Coco White Dwarf. To plant dwarf beans, space plants 30cm apart and expect them to grow to around 40cm high. They will need some support, either a stake or low trellis. Most dwarf bean varieties produce 60 days from direct sowing. The shell-out varieties will take longer for the beans to develop in the pod.

If you want to pick a multi-talented dwarf bean for your garden, try Borlotto Fire Tongue. This bean gives young edible pods, fresh 'shell-out's beans and long storing dried beans. As it matures it develops striking red and purple mottled pods that are a point of beauty in themselves. The freshly shelled beans cooked the same day are creamy textured and full of flavour. You can freeze the cooked beans for later use. Otherwise, leave the pods to dry on the plant. Shell out the dried beans and store them dry for later use!

Fruit/vege of the month: zucchini

Zucchinis or courgettes are a generous plant. One plant will give a bounty lasting several months. There is a great choice of varieties you can plant, from the traditional dark green, to yellow, striped, round shaped scallopini, plus some weird and wonderful heirlooms. Varieties include Black Beauty, Black Coral, Cocazelle, Zephyr, Summer Gold, Sunbeam, Florence long ribbed, Romanesco and Rampicante.

Sow seeds indoors in early spring and transplant after 3 to 4 weeks. Later in the season, when the soil warms up, sow direct to your garden. Plant a new plant every 4 to 6 weeks and maintain a regular supply.

Zucchinis can be susceptible to mildew as they grow older, get too dry or too wet. Plant in full sun in fertile soil. They will be particularly happy where your compost heap was located last year.

How to harvest zucchini

You will have courgettes to harvest 8 to 12 weeks from planting. Cut the fruit from the plant before they get too big for best eating. No matter how hard you try though there will be some fruit that gets overlooked and turns into a marrow size which can happen in a matter of days. Put your creative hat on with the marrows, as they are still good to eat. Don’t forget the flowers, as they are a great resource for the creative cook!

Tiny Homes, bucking the trend

Over the past three decades, typical new houses worldwide have grown larger and larger, but recently, a growing population is bucking the trend. They’re choosing to live in homes less than one-quarter the size of the average new house.

Dubbed “the Tiny House movement”, this concept is spreading rapidly throughout the planet. The YouTube channels and TV programs dedicated primarily to Tiny Homes on wheels are numerous and growing. Tiny House building companies are popping up everywhere not only in New Zealand but worldwide. DIYers are taking control of their living situations and are building their own Tiny Homes. This is evident in the plan sales recorded by Shaye’s Tiny Homes. Since the Covid era, this relatively small company has sold well over five hundred sets of p lans worldwide.

Although there is no doubt this new trend is gaining popularity, those choosing this lifestyle are constantly coming up against legislation making it hard for both Tiny House owners and councils to navigate. More and more councils worldwide are addressing the situation and New Zealand is no exception. They accept that Tiny Homes offer an innovative solution to a worldwide housing crisis. As stated by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment in the latest MBIE Tiny House guide, the most important thing is to ensure that Tiny Houses are “safe, healthy

and durable”. Thousands of Tiny homeowners in New Zealand are a testament to the fact that Tiny Homes on Wheels usually meet all these requirements, and are in many cases healthier, safer and more durable than many of the standard homes people are living in at the moment.

Shaye has been building and designing tiny homes for over a decade, from cob, to strawbale, to tiny homes on wheels. Having lived tiny for many years, she has experienced the ups and downs of different designs. Her main focus these days is on long-term livability. How to make a tiny space as convenient and easy to live in as a

regular house? How to make it safe, healthy and durable? How to make it beautiful and a place to be proud of? Shaye has proved that big is not always better and that tiny can indeed meet all these criteria. Her company, based in West Auckland, has been operating for over seven years and has produced over one hundred homes. Winner of Most Creative Home in the New Zealand Tiny House of the Year Competition 2021, Shaye’s aim is to develop creative ideas to make each home unique and special to the person who has chosen to live the tiny lifestyle.

The designs created by Shaye’s Tiny Homes are known worldwide with international

builders asking permission to build her houses. Australia, USA, Canada, UK, Spain, and South Korea all have companies licensed to build her designs and the list is growing. As described by the director of Jieum Jutaek Corporation, a company in South Korea, “Shaye’s Tiny Homes are the Chanel and Louis Vuitton of Tiny Homes”. New Zealand is known internationally as a leader in innovation and admired for its ability to think outside the box, and the Ti ny House movement is proving yet another feather in their cap.

All in the details

Bought in 2008 by Auckland-based couple, Rob and Fabricia Foster, the large cornersite section originally had a Keith Hay home on it, dating back to the eighties. Used as an escape from the city, the couple always had plans to eventually build their dream holiday home. In 2018, they employed local Omaha builders, Nickel Construction to build a stand-alone double garage which housed an upstairs bedroom, en suite and office. Taking the plunge a few years later to finally complete their plan, the Keith Hay building

was removed from the site in 2021, and a design was drawn by Megan Edwards and Allan Eng of Megan Edwards Architecture. Once again, Tim Nickel and his foreman, Greg Sowten, were put to work, completing the house in all its glory earlier this year.

When stepping in the front door, your eyes are immediately drawn to the floating concrete entrance steps and the expansive indoor and outdoor flow that wraps around the L-shaped house, making the most of the north-facing aspect of the internal courtyard.

As you walk down the hallway past the modern and perfectly minimalist bedrooms and main bathroom, your sense of smell is triggered by the freshly installed Cedar wood, which comes to fruition when you find yourself in the living, kitchen and dining area where the walls and ceilings are intricately adorned with Cedar panels and American Oak lining.

Achieving such a stunning outcome did not come without its challenges, however. Supplied by Hermpac, each Cedar panel

that was placed on the wall had to be painstakingly lined up with the ceiling panels so that when the two pieces of timber met each other, the lines ran seamlessly from one to another. Another issue that Greg and his team had, was that being a natural wood, each panel was a different colour tone, so that also needed to be taken into consideration when matching the wall with the ceiling panels. “The intricate nature of the internal cedar and oak linings was a challenge that excited our team, and our foreman Greg is very proud of the extremely high level of finish that has been achieved,” says Tim. “The living area stands out like a piece of fine art.”

Perfectly complementing the use of Cedar and American Oak, as well as adding to the retro feel of the home, are beautiful details such as the use of reeded-glass windows which allow light into private areas, the high ceilings and also the large dark porcelain tiles on the floor which at first glance are akin to concrete. The pot belly fireplace in the living room also omits a sense of warmth and a welcoming feel as do the furnishings in jewel-like colours in mustard, olive green, burgundy and dark grey. Textures such as velvet, linen and Turkish weaves also add to the inviting feeling of the house.

From the living room, the outdoor fire and Locarno louvre system allows for an indooroutdoor flow perfect for entertaining, no matter what the weather. “The interior and exterior living spaces flow into one another in a very generous way, which creates a relaxed atmosphere and spaces that can be both intimate and accommodate larger groups,” says Allan. “It’s a reasonably complex house that feels quite simple and relaxed which seems appropriate given its beach setting."

Teen sunscreen

When Maya Stapleton’s friend mentioned that she had discovered a cancerous melanoma on her skin last summer, Maya and a close-knit group of students started conducting a plan, as part of their school’s Young Enterprise team, to raise awareness, as well as help reduce the number of skin cancer victims amongst adolescent Kiwis. Co-founder and Point Wells local Maya, says “melanoma in young adults and teenagers is often overlooked - people assume that skin cancers arise in later years and that young people’s risk of developing skin cancer are slim. However, this is not the case and more and more frequently, teenagers and young adults are developing melanomas.”

As students of St Cuthbert's College, where Maya boards as an on-campus student, the Young Enterprise team set out to produce a sunscreen for youthful skin, that is affordable for the market and of high quality. “There is no sunscreen in New Zealand that is designed for teenagers and young adults, which is why we are so proud to present our product” mentioned Maya.

Sunblock for cool kids, Rejuvenate is the brainchild of a group of students who are working hard to tackle sun safety by creating products that will not only make a lasting difference, but also change the way teenagers view sunscreen.

The team of eight have collaborated with EltaMD, a Swiss American brand that is considered the number one dermatologistapproved skincare label in the United States of America and is often endorsed by celebrities. Rejuvenate uses EltaMD’s same high-quality and well-tested sunscreen formula but targets a younger demographic through fun branding and a lower price point. The incredible SPF 46 product is acne preventative, lightweight, white cast free, dermatologist approved, oil and paraben free, vegan and recommended by Prescription Skin Care NZ, Skin Cancer Foundation and the Institute for Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery.

With New Zealand having the second highest rate of melanoma in the world, diagnosing over 86,000 people annually, Rejuvenate is on a mission to become the brand that raises awareness of skin cancer while also encouraging the use of sunscreen through their trustworthy and high-quality product. You can support this creative company on its incredible journey and shop Rejuvenate via their social media channels or through their website.

Natural ways to manage anxiety and panic attacks all however. However, snowball into panic attacks.

When we get overwhelmed with stress, we will commonly feel anxious and unable to cope with mental or emotional pressure.

During this time our body goes into “fight or flight” - the feeling we would get if a lion was chasing us - shallow breathing, rapid heart rate, sweating, mind goes blank, muscles feel stiff, and poor digestion.

To support our body with stress, there are natural ways and lifestyle tools that are helpful to calm anxiety and prevent panic attacks. By making adjustments to your daily habits it will give you the ability to adapt to stress, calm your mind, and soothe the nervous system.

8 NATURAL WAYS TO MANAGE ANXIETY AND REDUCE PANIC ATTACKS:

1. Meditation and breathing techniques

When we are feeling overwhelmed and stressed, we breathe shallow which leads to more anxiety and panic attacks. One of the best ways to reset and calm the nervous system is deep breathing techniques or meditation. By breathing slower and more deeply from your diaphragm, you signal

your nervous system to calm down. Deep breathing moves the autonomic nervous system from sympathetic (fight or flight) to parasympathetic (rest and digest).

How to do Diaphragmatic Breathing:

• Lie down on your back, or sit with a strai ght spine.

• Place one hand in the middle of your chest.

• Place the other hand on the stomach - just beneath the rib cage.

• Inhale slowly through your nose, feel the belly rise against your hand, then your ch est expands.

• Exhale slowly through your nose, feel the chest soften beneath your hand, and the belly draw in towards the spine.

• Continue slowly breathing in and out through your nose for 5-10 minutes.

2. Reduce intake of stimulantscaffeine and alcohol

Everyday substances like caffeine and alcohol, when consumed in excess, can exacerbate underlying mental health issues like anxiety and depression. Limit

coffee to one cup per day to prevent getting the caffeine jitters. Going heavy on the caffeine can also increase alcohol use, as it is used to calm down at the end of the day. While alcohol may help you fall asleep and feel calm, it reduces the quality of your sleep, so you do not get the deep rest your br ain needs.

3. Avoid distractions, negative social media, and negative news

The negative mind is the most powerful default mind. If we are overwhelming the mind with negativity then we are more likely to feel negative, anxious and overwhelmed. Become aware of what media you are watching and people you are interacting with. Avoid or limit exposure to negative influences. Learn what triggers your anxiety and what causes you to feel panicked.

4. Herbs to calm anxiety

Anxiolytic and carminative herbs calm the nervous system. The best herbs are lemon balm, lavender, green oats, passionflower, skullcap and chamomile. Teas are not at therapeutic dosing so will

have minimal effect unless you drink a lot of tea! I would suggest taking higher dose products in herbal tinctures or capsules. These will have a significant effect within 20-30 minutes to calm anxiety. It is vital to work with a Naturopath who is knowledgeable about herbal supplements and their interactions with medications.

5. Supplements to soothe the Nervous System

Supplements are helpful to calm the nervous system and balance neurotransmitters; serotonin and dopamine.

Magnesium - Supports nerve function, neurotransmitter synthesis, nervous system function and healthy sleeping patterns.

L-theanine - Helps to alleviate stress and mild anxiety. It supports a relaxed state of mind and offers cognitive benefits without sedation.

5HTP - 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is the precursor of serotonin. Serotonin is involved in mood, sleep, appetite control, pain regulation, and is the precursor of melatonin.

SAMe - Helps support emotional and general mental wellbeing. SAMe supports mood and neurotransmitter synthesis.

6. Exercise - Move your body

Movement helps to regulate the nervous system. Moving your body decreases muscle tension to lower the body’s contribution to feeling anxious. It will divert the anxious energy in the body and boost endorphins to make you feel happy. Aerobic exercise is especially helpful for chronic anxiety; a bike ride, dance class, jogging, swimming, or a brisk walk. Aim for 20 to 30 minutes daily.

7. Hug someone

If you are feeling overwhelmed or sad then the cure might be a simple hug. The elongated hug gives your nervous system a chance to co-regulate to a more relaxed state and provides a burst of oxytocin; the bonding and belonging hormone.

8. Self-care

Focus on things that make you feel good and relaxed. When life is feeling overwhelming, take time out for yourself to relax and recentre. Stepping back from your problems helps to clear your head. Self care could bea massage, a yoga class, creating a morning routine, beach walking, cold shower or ocean swim, listening to music, essential oils, journaling your thoughts, or a mindful cup of herbal tea. Focus on the positives and what you can control. Be in the present moment.

Tomorrow needs you

The Person Behind Me spreads positivity and raises awareness on the significant subject of mental health through a gentle reminder on the back of a hoodie. Holly Kenyon, who grew up in Kaiwaka and attended Kaiwaka Primary School and Otamatea High School truly cherishes the small town that she calls home. Mentioning that members of the close-knit community are kind, friendly and supportive but there is a lack of support for mental health throughout many small towns in New Zealand and people deserve better. Therefore she has set out to create change in communities like Kaiwaka and towns all over the country.

This inspiring female entrepreneur launched her business with one thing in mind, to remind people battling mental health that tomorrow needs you. Having personally dealt with her own mental health journey in the past and finding that some days, at the age of twenty-two, she still has her moments. Holly stated that she sees people struggling daily, especially on social media, and in reality, individuals tend to hide behind screens and lose touch with those around them.. “As a young female, mental health is important to me because today we can compare ourselves constantly on social media. It’s easy to feel like you’re not enough, not as beautiful, not as successful, and not as

important as someone else. We need to remember social media is easily manipulated and we are often only shown the highlights of someone's life”, she said.

The Person Behind Me has flourished to change the lives of Kiwis. If it impacts one person's day, it makes a beautiful difference. Holly says, “I’m so incredibly grateful to not only have the opportunity to remind others that they matter, but to also give those wearing the hoodies the opportunity to make a difference too”. The product is great quality, heavyweight and designed in many different colours and sizes. With every purchase, you are raising awareness about mental health and making a donation to suicide prevention. You are truly making a difference in our society.

This is your gentle reminder that you a re loved.

Many people are not aware of the impact th at pelv ic health can have on their body and their everyday life. A functional pelvic floor can support bladder and bowel function, ease lower back pain and period pain, red uce prolap se symptoms and help with sexual dysfunction.

At The Pelvic Workshop Hannah offers assessments of pelvic floor issues for both men and women of all ages. The pelvic health assessment involves discussing what challenges you are currently facing and your health history, followed by a physical assessment of the pelvic floor muscles. This ensures you get an individual programme with targeted exercises.

“Our female patients are often looking for help during pregnancy, after having children, or through menopausal changes. Our male patients typically come in before or after having prostate surgery.”

Physiotherapist Hannah Holloway has a wealth of experience in Physiotherapy across various

settings. These have included Paediatrics, Surgical rehabilitation, Cardiac rehabilitation and supporting sports teams.

Over the past ten years, Hannah has focused on Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy, but going through the parenting journey herself has highlighted the struggles that many women have with recovery after pregnancy and birth. This was the main driver for her to gain advanced qualifications in the area of pelvic health, which is the diagnosis and management of the group of muscles called the pelvic floor.

“I am passionate about helping people to overcome issues that limit their wellbeing – and ultimately their enjoyment of life,” Hannah says. “ACC has also recognised the importance of pelvic health with a new bill to pass in October which will cover birth trauma injuries. This exciting development will make pelvic health rehabilitation accessible for mo re people”.

Hannah, a mother of two, grew up in

Warkworth and now lives on a lifestyle block in Matakana. Her family love the outdoors and will often be spotted up Mount Tamahunga or at the Omaha Surf Club on Sundays.

Another highlight of Hannah’s week is teaching a popular Pilates class in Warkworth on Monday mornings, where she brings functional strength and pelvic health awareness to her sessions.

Hannah’s main message to anyone concerned about their pelvic health is: Reach out for help!

“There might be some simple strategies and exercises we can work on that will make a big difference to your everyday life and happiness.”

A GP referral is not necessary, and you can be referred to a specialist if required.

Slow energy

Life can quite easily become so busy and fast-paced that we forget to enjoy the journey itself - it’s so easy to get caught up with work and the next thing that needs doing.

Healer and empath, Chanel from Soulful Reiki in Mangawhai, shares with us some methods that she uses to help slow down and protect her energy.

• Keep your environment clean and clutter-free. This includes home and work environments.

• Wash your bedding, hang your pillows and duvet inners in the sun to air. Wipe down beside tables and light switches. Get some music going and light a candle or a diffuser. Remove any clutter that’s built up as well as rubbish. Having a good clean out will leave you feeling refreshed and your mind a lot lighter and clearer.

• Spend more time outside, soak up some sun rays, put your feet on the earth and breathe in some fresh air. Literally slow down and smell the flowers.

• Practise gratitude on a daily basis, whether that’s a gratitude journal, notes in your phone or just stopping for five minutes out of your day to list three things that you are grateful for in your life. Reflect on all that is going well in your life, focus less on the negatives and highlight your positives.

• Meditate and take the time to pause. Give yourself permission to stop, let anything else on your mind slip away for just a few minutes a day to focus on your breathing. Be s till and truly listen to your body and

w hat it’s trying to tell you.

• Take a break from all devices, put your phone and laptop down and read a book. Switch off from the coming and going of others.

• Get outside in the garden if you have one, there is nothing like getting your hands in the dirt for some stress relief.

• A healing treatment is a great way to incorporate slowing down. If you feel like you need healing, find a healer that makes you feel comfortable, book in a session and take some much needed time for yourself.

Luxury gifting made easy

No strangers to hard work, sisters Jessie Davidson and Lydia Harris are the impressive pair behind The Duo, a new luxury bespoke gifting service.

Designed to make life easier for those wanting to give unique and beautiful gifts, The Duo was born after a fair bit of soul searching. Living in Matakana and Snells Beach respectively, Jessie and Lydia found themselves frustrated by their lack of worklife balance. The thick-as-thieves sisters would use their early-morning commute into Auckland City - where they both held big and busy jobs - to discuss what their next career move could be. A business idea that would provide them with more flexibility and therefore more time to spend at home with their family and friends. But also, something that they were passionate about. "While we have very different skillsets - my background is in advertising and Lydia's is in operationswe knew they would be complementary if we were to work together." Coming from parents who ran a successful fashion business, both know what it takes to create something from the start up and make it a success. "We both love working,” says Lydia. “Working hard has never been the issue. What we desperately needed was more flexibility a nd balance."

When Covid first hit in 2020 and the sisters found themselves at home with their families in lockdown, it was the unexpected opportunity they both needed to finally bite the bullet and make their dream become a reality. "During the first lockdown,” says Jessie, “after spending so much time with the family, it hit me one night - I was suddenly faced with a very stark realisation that because of my long working hours, I was missing so much of my two boy’s lives.” This sentiment was also shared by Lydia,

who has also two young children, so the pair decided it was time to stop talking, and ta ke action.

Given their fashion and textile heritage and shared love for interiors, they came up with the idea of a bespoke gifting service. Spending a year working on their business plan and working closely with a research analyst, mentors and personal advisors, the pair recently launched The Duo, a luxury digital gifting platform set up to accommodate both the corporate community and retail consumers. “We wanted to provide the New Zealand market with high quality, luxury products and gifts, while also supporting and promoting the makers, their values and the stories behind their craft,” says Jessie.

While they do hold stock-on-hand for gift purchases for any occasions, what sets The Duo apart is their customised service, providing bespoke customer experiences. With a focus on luxury corporate gifting, they work hard to go above and beyond the expectations from their clients when it comes to hand-selecting gifts and also sending them out to their recipients; packaged beautifully, right down to a hand-written card. “Our offering had to be about making people’s lives easier,” says Lydia. “We both knew how time consuming, especially in the corporate

world, the client and staff gifting process is. Our goal is to take that job off people’s hands and deliver gifts that are luxurious and desirable, as well as personal.”

As well as sourcing products from artisans around the country, the sisters have taken much pleasure in working with makers around the Matakana region, such as Leach Studios, Dawn Clayden and Honest Chocolat, to name a few. “We were so impressed by the local talent that we decided it would be cool if we told the maker’s stories behind their craft on our website, so that people had a connection to the products that they were buying for others or being given,” says Jessie.

“I guess in a nutshell, what we are really doing is flipping the idea of standard corporate gifting on its head,” says Jessie. “We don’t want to give consumables that are gone in a moment, or for our gifts to end up in the back of a cupboard, we want to sell items that people are going to use, love and remember, and then come back for more.”

And have they achieved the work, life balance they were so desperately after?

“Don’t get me wrong,” says Lydia, “we have the balance right – you’ll find us tending to our ponies before heading into the home office, and unlike before, we are always there for school pick-up and the kid’s various sporting activities. But, the hard yards

definitely go in and none of this comes easy. However, the beauty is that we now get to manage everything in our own time and not on someone else’s clock.”

A new artist is in town

Who is Joel Nicholls? Matakana holds the answer. The story begins with a simple weekend away with his mother. The destination of choice, Matakana. A town where “the Kaka screech replaces the roosters crow” as he describes it. Being passionate about birds and nature while also enjoying a fine meal or a quiet beer, or two, the town was an easy fit for the artist.

Though the plan was never to set up there, he recalls feeling and proclaiming at the time “this is where an artist needs to be”. Not really wanting to leave, the trip turned into a scouting expedition, then a second weekend, then, Nicholls Gallery was born. Located in the Iconic Morris & James complex, the 36-year-old artist is in fine creative company. Literally painting on the foundations laid by the prestigious Morris & James pottery.

Known mostly for his unique depictions of New Zealand birds, Joel had previously

sold mainly through social media platforms or word of mouth. Building on a reputation of having nothing available due to the demand for his work. Being the case, right before his serendipitous experience in Matakana, the artist had called a stop to any more commissions for 2022. “I need time to develop myself and my art, I am but an infant” the artist wrote of the decision. With his work being whipped out to private homes and collectors as soon as the last brush strokes were made, Joel desired his creations to linger a little longer, to be

looked at a little more. The timing was right, and the artist was ready. Now Matakana has a new local, a new artist, and a new gallery. Nicholls Gallery is something different. A working gallery where most days you will find Joel busy breathing life into a canvas, drawing, writing or simply pondering his next creation. An unexpected looking artist. He wouldn’t look out of place on a Viking ship a thousand years ago. And the adventure in his eyes suggests he wouldn’t mind that either. But he is here, creating his dreams

With a large number of entries held over from the cancelled event in 2020, and new creations entered for 2022, the competition promises to be a show to remember.

The show will bring to life the spine-tingling mixture of KapaHaka and bagpipes so loved by previous audiences, together with the awe inspiring mixture of light, sound, music and dance that people have come to expect - “but, with an evolutionary twist,” - says Artistic Director, Debi Walters Brown. Debi is a devoted fan of wearable art and is very excited at being asked to direct the show this year. She has many years experience in the theatre and has been part of Art&Tartan+ on several previous occasions.

The show will, as always, feature a parade of primary school children treading the boards

During its absence, there has been a rebrand refresh for the years ahead. The event has been dubbed Art&Tartan+ and from 2023 the scope of the show will be developed to take on a new focus with the main emphasis on encouraging entries that illustrate the diverse cultures of Aotearoa, New Zealand and around the world.

The contest will be held on Friday 14 and Saturday 15 October with a 7.30pm performance on Friday, a 2pm matinee on Saturday with Awards Night on the same day beginning at 7.30pm. Tickets are now on sale and, proving how much the show has

Prices are $55 for Friday evening, Saturday matinee $45 for adults and $25 for children up to fourteen years and $60 for the glittering awards night on Saturday.

Novel way to spend lockdown

Regular writer for Junction Magazine, Luke Williamson, has published a novel he wrote during lockdown in 2021. A passionate swimmer, surfer and general ocean occupant, Luke’s novel, ‘Submerged’, revolves around the thrill and therapy of long distance swimming, the complexities of relationships, and finding ways to deal with the unexpected.

“I really wanted to try and convey my love of ocean swimming and the experience of being in the water for prolonged time and distance. It’s so important to my mental wellbeing,” he says. “I was also interested in writing about friendships with other males as I experience them, not as I keep seeing them in movies and TV shows. And I just wanted to play with some ideas that had been lurking in my brain for too long.”

Luke’s love of the sea continues and he swims at least three times a week with a dedicated band of ocean swimmers at Mangawhai Heads. He also teaches children at Swim Mangawhai, helping the next wave of young swimmers find their confidence and skill in the water.

While there may be more novels in the future, actually completing and publishing his first has been both a challenge and a pleasure for Luke, and he’s excited to see it go forth into the world.

Swimming companion from Mangawhai Heads and novelist, Jacquie McRae, had this to say about the book; “Luke Williamson’s novel, ‘Submerged’, is aptly titled. On the surface, it appears to be a story about ocean swimming and friendship, but, if you dive a little deeper, so much more is going on. I think the beauty of this novel is that everyone will probably take something different from it. Imitating life, the twists and turns

this novel takes are unpredictable and make a refreshing change from the formulaic. We are led through a portal into a world that encourages us to take notice of the small things – the stars in the night sky, the beauty on the ocean floor, a smile across a room. An exploration of friendship is at the heart of this novel. It thoughtfully investigates the complexities of love and some of its many forms. The lens that we look through is both curious and contemplative. The reader is asked to suspend what they think they know to be true, and it’s a testament to Luke’s writing that we do. This novel felt like an invitation to tap into the stillness and the silence within the ocean, and within ourselves as well. A reminder to celebrate the wonder of nature and the people in our lives.”

The baby scoop

Annie Oxborough was born in 1971 to an ‘illegitimate Mother.’ Being out of wedlock and shamed by her family, she was treated like a second-class citizen and was left with no choice but to give her baby up for adoption.

Separated from her Mother not long after she was born, Annie was sent to live with her adoptive parents where she was none the wiser until age seven. “When I found out I was adopted, it was just horrific,” recalls Annie. “I had been dropped into a world where no one was related to me and then expected to never talk about it again.” Feeling lost and traumatised, Annie spent the next decade desperate to know her real family. “I just wanted to leave,” says Annie. “I didn’t belong to them.” At twenty, when Annie was finally legally allowed her birth certificate – which only showed her Mother’s maiden name - she searched for close to a year before finding her.

Agreeing to meet at a café, Annie recalls how the meeting was both intense and emotional. “Besides my 18 month old son, she was the only person in my whole existence that looked like me. It was the most confronting

and raw experience. Every time I recall this story I cry because it’s just insane that I was denied the right to know where I came from for so long.”

Annie then went on to meet her biological Father and has continued to see him and her Mother, as well as their children from other partners. “We see each other all the time and have a good relationship,” says Annie,

“but it is incredibly hard because we lost 20 years of connection. You can’t make up for los t ground.”

Passionate about changing what Annie calls an “archaic, insane and vile piece of legislation”, she is on a crusade to overturn the 1955 Adoption Act. “I will fight it until I die,” she says. Annie in particular is desperate - but legally not allowed - to

change her adoptive parents’ names on her birth certificate to her biological parents. “I’m being denied the right to my heritage”, she says. “I want my adoption redacted and my lineage corrected – you wouldn’t think that would be so hard. My birth certificate is fiction, all of it is a lie.”

To help her cause and also to raise awareness of what life is like for adoptees, Annie has recently written a book titled ‘Where the F***k is my Mother’. “It’s aimed at the adult adoptee or for anyone who wants to know about adoption” she says. “It highlights all of the pain points that we have experienced in a really basic, concise and raw way. It’s a tear-jerker and an e ye-opener.”

Annie hopes that by fighting the law, she will finally be given back her true identity and a place on her family tree that she so rightly belongs to.

Annie’s book ‘Where the F**k is my Mother’ is currently available on Kindle via Amazon or through Apple Books..

CRAIG LORD VOTE FOR MAYOR

There’s a genuine and honest option available to Auckland voters this election cycle, with Craig Lord making some big splashes in the Mayoral race. He’s not a former MP, lawyer, university graduate, or corporate, in fact, he’s a blue-collar grassroots father of two that has been married to his teenage sweetheart for 26 years.

So why is he making such an impact against what would be considered the normal type of high-profile candidate?

The answer seems to be his commonsense approach to Auckland’s problems, and his ability to connect with, and stand up for, the everyday Aucklander.

Raised in the small rural town of Putaruru, Lord moved to Auckland by himself when he was just 15 years old. It was certainly a long way from his rural

Waikato upbringing where career paths were limited, but he adapted quickly to the big city life and he became a Technician, specialising in factory automation.

However, while showing commitment and focus at a young age, he was always keen to leap into new territory, leaving the comfort of his engineering world and setting himself up as a freelance media operator.

It took courage to make that move, given he had no experience in the trade and needed to support his very young family, but he had a love for motorsport, was a hobbyist photographer, and was confident that he could turn those joys into a career.

Turns out, he was right. He has run his media and broadcasting business for twenty years and it has been quite an amazing journey.

Craig is no stranger to Local Government electioneering. Lord believes good governance

can come from the common-sense approach of the everyday, engaged with strong support, and create a beacon of hope for all that strive to make a better life in NZ’s greatest city.

Now, more than ever with his loving wife by his side Lord draws on the steely reserves that drive common people as he seeks to help guide Auckland.

With his wife’s full support - again - Lord is confident he has the skills and ability to take Auckland beyond the traditional stereotype of former MP politician, laywer, or corporate baron, that voters have had to accept in the past. He openly admits that Shelly and his family are his rocks, and whilst their children are now adults, this power couple still gets to be parents to their dogs and chickens.

Auckland is ready to be a city of the people.

A celebration of Kauri and Kaipara

The Kauri Museum at Matakohe is celebrating its 60th birthday this October with a daylong festival of all things Kauri.

The Kauri Heritage Festival is the biggest event the Museum has been able to host since the beginning of the pandemic, and marks the start of Spring, the peak visitor season for one of Northland’s largest cultural attractions. Entry to the Museum will be free for this family friendly event, with exhibits, stalls, activities, food and music.

At the core of the day is, of course, the Museum’s enormous collection of items from the Kaipara area, which clearly focuses on the Kauri - as a forest giant, and later as timber, furniture and industry. Over its 60 years the Museum has also come to recognise not only the importance of treasuring the past history of the Kauri, but also of protecting its future. Exhibitors will talk about the threats posed to this magnificent emblem of Northland, and how we can protect it.

But the Museum is far more than a museum of timber. In its collection are treasured objects, photographs, and oral histories from all over the Kaipara. Often donated by residents and long-term supporters, the belongings reflect life in this area since well before European settlement right through to the present. With the vast majority of the collection on permanent display, a visit to the Festival will be both an introduction to some of these beautiful things, and a chance to see them in a new light.

Museum Director Barbara Hilden says the Festival is also an opportunity to learn about the Museum’s ambitious expansion project, currently under construction. “A new entrance to the Museum is being built, along with the largest expansion ever made to our collections and research facilities. While celebrating the first 60 years of the Museum, we’re looking forward to the next 60.”

Waipu Scottish Migration Museum

The Waipu Scottish Migration Museum is proud of its reputation as one of New Zealand’s best small museums. Its “double migration” story, told through a variety of interactive exhibits, shows how almost 1,000 Gaelic-speaking Highland Scots journeyed from the harsh conditions of post-Culloden Scotland to Nova Scotia and then, how their “search for paradise” brought them to Waipu in 1854.

The Museum maintains a database of over 100,000 people, recording the genealogy of descendants of the original settlers. There is also a gift shop with a great range of products.

Hours: Everyday 10am-4pm. 36 The Centre, Waipu 0510 | 09 432 0746 | www.WaipuMuseum.com

Warkworth Museum

Just north of Auckland, the Warkworth Museum is situated in the stunning Parry Kauri Park, home to the McKinney Kauri, one of the largest Kauri trees on the north east coast. After walking through the park, visit the Museum which tells the story of early European settlement, timber felling, gum digging and boat building. The growth of the Warkworth district is showcased through displays containing many heritage items, photographs and textiles of the era.

Open: Daily, 10am-3pm.

Mangawhai Museum

If stories are treasure, Mangawhai Museum is full to bursting.

An epic battle, sunken gold bullion, a secret gathering with noble goals, and the mystery of the left-footed jandal. All these stories plus a café and gift shop full of kids’ favourites and local “Handmade in Mangawhai” items. You’ll never forget Magical Mangawhai and the treasures we have in store for you.

Open 7 days a week from 10am-4pm. Jessie’s Café now open.

The Kauri Museum

Many thousands of objects, from giant kauri logs and steam engines to the smallest button from a WWI army tunic and a miniature doll that rests in a walnut shell have been gathered over the past 60 years to form the Kauri Museum's collection.

With so much on display individual items can easily be overlooked, even when right in front of the viewer. A special 60th birthday exhibition opening this month takes items from across the Museum and moves them out of their usual displays to offer a glimpse into history, and the lives of the people who made or owned these precious things.

The importance of heritage

The theme of the Auckland Heritage Festival 2022, held 1-16 October, is ‘Topography, Taonga and Trailblazers.’ A reminder that each physical object has an intangible value.

How we arrived in this area, overcame the topography, and made our mark is our heritage. Significance of our heritage could be as unassuming as a tree stump or as conspicuous as a monument. The first settlements in the area were concentrated near waterfalls which divided fresh water from navigable rivers. Roads were built between landings and industries, such as mills or mines, and later linked as agriculture and land transport evolved.

The Mahurangi, Matakana, and Omaha catchments were considered so rich in resources that there was a suggestion that it could be the nation’s capital. Early surveys demonstrate such optimism. The extensive settlement of Lower Matakana (Sandspit) was laid out and many of the paper roads and undeveloped quarter-acre lots are still visible on survey plans to this day. Struggles with topography, however, required adaptation. European settlers couldn’t just replicate Northumberland’s Warkworth in this colony.

Laying a grid system across steep swales meant that many connecting roads weren’t formed and lots weren’t developed.

Building techniques took into account what materials were locally available and the technical limitations of what needed to be freighted. Designs needed to consider the subtropical climate.

Matakana Valley Road is blessed with a high concentration of heritage buildings between the wharf and Greenwood’s Farm at the foot of the Matakana hill. The buildings tell the story of how the town evolved from timber extraction, to boat building, to farming, to food processing, and to being a service town. Social and cultural amenities such as the church, hall, Jubilee Park, and war memorial highlight the community’s early patriotism and cohesion.

The most obvious and valuable resource of our history are our cemeteries. They document drownings, accidents, epidemics,

wars, and legacies. Headstones link to street names, businesses, and recognisable surnames in our community. Records need to be kept so that history isn’t forgotten. Such information is invaluable for decisions made in the future.

It is also important that heritage be accepted in its original context. Modern attitudes form as the result of a series of historical events. Nothing can be learned by removing heritage items due to new-found sensitivities and replacing them with modern interpretations.

Heritage is everywhere we look if we know how to look for it. Those who learn from history can make the most of their future.

The newly-formed Heritage Matakana group are planning a series of events, starting with cemetery tours throughout the Auckland Heritage Festival. Visit our Instagram pages for updates.

Protect a kiwi

Kiwi’s strong scent and inability to escape make them irresistible to dogs. Without a breastplate and chest muscles to protect their internal organs like other birds have, dogs are a major threat to kiwi. Easily found even in the daytime, sheltering under fern fronds or pampas, the death of just one kiwi can have massive repercussions to the kiwi population. Free kiwi aversion training is a programme that can minimise the threat of dogs injuring or killing a kiwi.
