Nobel Fight System is a new combat sports club at Level Movement, 66 Bagnal Road, Mangawhai. Their training system supports people's physical, emotional and mental health. The big difference between what they do and the average combat sports gym is that their classes are structured and informed by rites of passage and initiation into manhood ceremonies. These practices create a space that allows for a framing of aggression that focuses on character development, and respect for the practice of training and other people in general. Pop in for a visit and a free class!

THE MYOFASCIAL LIFT
Words Kate Moore Born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, Daniel Millaire is the youngest of six boys, and as he grew up in a golf club, he spent his summers working on the green assisting his older brothers, and then spent his winters working in the popular French themed restaurants that the family owned. As soon as he turned 18, Daniel was on an adventure to live life to the fullest and experience everything. Daniel has always believed in “the power of wishing, the universe has nowhere else to go”. This attitude escorted him through Mexico and South America before embarking on a quest through Istanbul, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nepal and India. Finally, he travelled to New Zealand in 1983 with his first wife and recently born son. There, he became maître d'hôtel for many years at some of the top restaurants. He was in high demand thanks to his impressive wine knowledge and ability to put on a show with fiery flambees. He dazzled staff and patrons alike by remembering small details that made people feel important. Unfortunately, however, when the Rainbow Warrior sank, no one could differentiate Daniels’s accent between French Canadian or French from France and working with the public became a misery, especially when alcohol contributed to the Daniel’smix.ability to pivot careers is something that he will continue to do his entire life, allowing opportunities to present themselves and embracing them at full speed. Moving to Hotel Management, Daniel worked his magic on hotels in both islands of New Zealand, In the words of Forrest Gump, “life is like a box of chocolates”, but if you are ever fortunate to speak to Daniel Millaire, you are more likely to have life described as a mixed case of wine. Norfolk Island and Fiji. This career was put on hold when Daniel became a single dad to his two children (Pascal, five and Julia, three) and working hotel hours became unfeasible. The opportunity to educate presented itself and before long, Daniel was a popular lecturer at AUT for Hotel Management and Food and Wine. During this time, Daniel also wrote a 90 minute show titled “Everything you wanted to know about wine and afraid to

When the children left home, he returned to Hotel Management only to find the love of his life, Angela, while working on Norfolk Island. He pivoted to become a Flight Attendant with Air NZ and Angela and Daniel travelled the world at a reduced cost. Daniel recalls staying in a basic hut in Cambodia with no electricity one week and then a sumptuous suite in India the next.
After four years of exciting travel, they returned to New Zealand to stay with his daughter, Julia, in Warkworth for six weeks, but due to the Pandemic and lockdowns, they ended up staying for nine months. Falling in love with the Matakana region, the couple transformed a beautiful home into a stunning, peaceful retreat where Daniel holds wine weekends complete with fantastic cooking which “helps solve all the problems of t he world”.
The protection of assets that we have all worked so hard to acquire is an important consideration for most people. Knowing your neighbours and helping each other is not a new idea - our forebearers took that for granted. From borrowing a cup of flour to minding a child, or watering the garden when a neighbour goes away, good neighbourliness happens when you know and care about those around you. But current suburban design means that most have to jump in their cars and travel to connect w ith others.
Earthsong Eco-Neighbourhood is a cohousing neighbourhood in Ranui, west Auckland, home to sixty-nine adults and children in thirty-two homes nestled amongst gardens, paths, and a village green. Many people feel lonely and unsupported in their separate suburban houses, especially young families, singles and older people, and are hungry for more neighbourly connection and a sense of belonging.
Imagine if your house was part of a defined cluster of households like a small village, set within gardens and connected by pathways and shared space. You know your neighbours, and it's easy to chat on the path, join a neighbour for a cuppa at an outside table, or watch the neighbourhood kids of all ages race through on their skateboards. Imagine a shared common space where planned and spontaneous activities can happen, fostering a sense of belonging and a rich social life. “Home” is both your individual, private house and the shared spaces of t he neighbourhood. If you were part of the founding group, you co-designed the community you wanted, and together with the other households, you manage and care for these shared spaces yourselves. This is cohousing, highfunctioning neighbourhoods that give the support, belonging, and neighbourliness of a defined community.

Robin became the coordinator through the construction period, and has lived there e ver since. Through that challenging and satisfying journey of creating Earthsong, the group learnt a huge amount and developed systems helpful to others considering their own project. These are now recorded in Robin’s book Cohousing for Life, which both tells their story and distils what they learnt, from agreeing on a shared vision to legal and financial aspects, as well as from governance and decision-making to com munity design.

"I always wanted chickens, and after living in Puhoi for a year, I finally got my wish. We picked up a large old playhouse that got a chicken-reno-makeover, closed off a large area for them and got our first lot of chickens. We have since added to these chickens over the years and now have a mix of Plymouth Barred Rock, Hylines and Lavender Orpington Bantams. I can't imagine life without chickens now - fresh eggs every day is just fantastic and it feels good to be able to give away extra eggs as gifts. It can take a long time to learn about chickens and it can be challenging at times as there are so many things that can go wrong, but once you know what to look for it's smooth sailing. It's easy to get attached to them too, they can be very endearing and I have had the odd one that I cried ugly tears over when they have died, but all the wonderful things about chickens definitely outweigh the negatives."
I have five of these wee girls. If you are going to add these smaller breeds to your flock, I recommend getting a few so that they can stick together and fend off the larger chooks that may pick on them. In saying that, they are feisty, bossy, nosey and very noisy little chickens. If they catch sight of me, then it's a huge performance from them until I come up and see them. There is always a broody one too, they take their job very seriously and are good egg layers. SheROXYisa Polish Frizzle. 16 RURAL COVETED PIECES FOR YOUR HOME Photos Kate Little Photography Squirrel Tree is a family-run business with 40 years experience of hunting and gathering beautiful homewares from around the globe. Having curated the best-of-the-best as well as created their own designs, their new store in Matakana is full of coveted finds for your home; indoors and out.
In store at the moment, Jerome and SarahJane’s top five are the German beer table and benches from Esshert (a supplier of theirs in the Netherlands). Also from Esshert is an aged terracotta pot collection and colourful plant misters. They love all the plants on offer, but especially the potted orchids. Lastly, their recycled teak benches are a personal favourite. In the coming weeks a new container will arrive with more goodies from around the world, so be sure to keep visiting. You will find Squirrel Tree in the Rummage site, on the corner of Anderson Road and Matakana Road. The interior has been given a beautiful coat of white paint with a pink counter completing the look. Come in and say hi and take a look at the new, but ever changing, Squirrel Tree.
17RURAL Head Squirrels, Jerome and Sarah-Jane, have worked with many of their artisans for many years, which has allowed them to tailor pieces to their exact specificationshandmade urns and teak furniture, to name a few. Many are small and family-owned artisans who welcome Jerome and SarahJane back year after year. This is an intrinsic part of Squirrel Tree’s design philosophy, making sure they care for the people they work with - all who have since become friends. They also have the exceptional Annie O working with them as well. She brings her amazing designer eye to the space and also to the plethora of flowers and indoor plants in store. She is somewhat the Terrarium Queen, and they already have their first terrarium workshop organised where you can have a glass of wine and build your own terrarium to take home. Julian is looking forward to further protecting the environment of the farm while continuing to maintain the profitability of the business.
ONERIRI STATION
“We’re still fencing off other small parts of bush and infilling areas of poor production with native trees so we can join sections of bush together to create more of a ‘reserve’. Once our trapping is at a standard the Department of Conservation is happy with, our ultimate goal would be to get kiwi reintroduced to Oneriri Station,” says Julian.
At the very end of Oneriri Road, 25 minutes drive west from Kaiwaka, there is a beautiful peninsula which is home to the 3500-hectare Oneriri Station. The farm has over 20,000 sheep and 1,200 cattle, and has just won three 2022 Balance Farm Environment Awardsa deserving recognition of the many years of hard work protecting this unique enclave.

Julian McPike is the director of the business. “It’s good to get recognition for what we do, but we don’t do it to get awards, we do it because we want to.” Julian is very realistic about the environmental work being based on a profitable farm, and he credits a lot of that success to his farm managers, Trevor and J oy JulianSmyth.says, “something I’ve learned as a director, is that it doesn’t matter what pastures you have, what classes of animal you run, or what kind of farm it is, the key to profitability is a good farm manager – nothing else matters.” Julian employed Trevor and Joy after purchasing the farm in 2009. “Trevor manages the day-today running of the farm, and we work together closely on that, but he has 40 years of farming experience which is why I value his expertise,” says Julian. Julian is keenly aware of his environmental responsibilities for the land and is the driving force behind the continued guardianship of the farm. “Part of the reason we bought the farm was because of its character,” he says. “From a business point of view, it’s an outstanding food-producing asset close to Auckland, but it was also about the bush and the beaches, and really looking after the property. The more bush fencing we do, the more control we have over the pasture. The better the pasture becomes, the more animals we can run - so it’s a win win.”

It's an impressive feat of environmental protection - 47km of coastline and 600 hectares of native bush fenced off, hectares of new native planting and large-scale predator control. “Trevor is very good at facilitating this work,” says Julian. “I’m lucky to have such a brilliant farm manager and I don’t know anyone who works harder than he does.”

Mike and Anne Smith were relatively early adopters of solar power, having installed solar some six years ago on their rural three bedroom home in Sandspit, North of Auckland. It was when he was looking to extend the system and add a battery that he thought he’d jump online and research if there was anyone he should speak to locally for a second quote. And the difference between the two solar quotes? Not huge, but, Mike explains, “Super City Solar obviously knew what they were doing, and I was impressed. And I have an allergy to salesmen - you don’t get that with Ash and his guys.”
When Mike Smith talks about wanting to do his bit for the environment by switching to solar power, he sees any economical benefits of solar as secondary, but certainly still a wonderful reason to embrace the alternative energy source.
Although Mike is intrinsically motivated by doing the right thing environmentally - he’s clearly savvy about it. “Yes, I have been fortunate enough to be in the position to do it, but I still had to justify the investment economically,” explains Mike. His justification was to consider current interest rates of having funds sitting in the bank, and compare that to the potential savings on power bills. Solar was clearly a wise choice, while also doing his bit for the environment.
And he’s passionate - to the point that the couple has not only invested in solar for their own property, but for those of several family members, two in New Zealand, and his son in the United Kingdom.
Around a year ago, Super City Solar installed 18 x 325W panels, an inverter of German design - the Alpha ESS Smile5 and 2x 5.7kWh batteries to give Mike his dream hybrid solution to store excess energy generated during the day to use in the evening, and to provide a backup in case of a power outage.
Mike uses online monitoring, with an app on his mobile, to watch his daily power usage with interest. “Typically from 1-5pm we’re not using much power, as there’s no lights switched on, and there’s a surplus, regardless of the weather.” Washing is done when the sun is out. Again, for environmental reasons, Mike has also gone with an electric vehicle, and tops up the car when otherwise he would have exported the surplus energy to the grid.
There were some obstacles, room on the roof being one, but the system was designed to catch the late afternoon sun. “Last summer we didn’t have a power bill for January, February, or March. I’ve been really surprised at the difference the battery has made. The only time we had a bill, it turned out it was one that had been estimated!”

GARDEN PLANNING TIPS •
Preparing the soil: To give your plants the best start in life, they need the right soil conditions with the right combination of pH, nutrients, and worms.
Location: be mindful of sun, wind, and water sources
Pest control: It is not just you who likes fruit and veges - so do birds, possums, and rabbits. It is easier to prevent problems by incorporating pest control tactics into the construction of your garden.
HOW TO START A NEW VEGETABLE GARDEN Time spent planning your edible garden will save you from disappointment later. Moving a vegetable garden or fruit tree is difficult if you accidentally put it in the wrong place, and there is nothing more frustrating than discovering a plant you lovingly nurtured has been stripped of produce overnight by a hungry possum. To develop a plan, you need to consider what you like to eat, what you wish to grow, and the constraints and opportunities provided by your location.
•
THERE ARE FIVE KEY ELEMENTS TO CONSIDER: Garden location: Watch the sun and shade patterns, especially around the longest and shortest days to site your garden in the most productive location. Consider wind shelter for exposed areas, and how you will source water during dry periods.
Construction options: Does your site need raised beds or not? Do you have a vertical wall that could be turned into a productive garden? Considering your options - before putting a spade in the ground - enhances your chance of success.
Construction: raised beds, vertical spaces,

BeesBORAGEloveborage, as do many beneficial insects that are good for your garden. Both the flowers and the leaves are edible. The pretty blue flowers give any salad a lift. You can also add the tender new leaves to your salad. The fresh borage leaves have good levels of vitamin A together with vitamin C, B vitamins, potassium, magnesium, iron, manganese, and calcium. It is a plant used by humans for thousands of years and has many documented medicinal properties including the use of the leaves as a poultice to reduce inflammation or bruising. Borage is easy to grow and seeds readily. To establish, sow seeds 1cm deep in mid-to-late spring. It is probably best grown in garden borders but it is a good companion plant for strawberries, tomatoes and plants from the cucurbit family (cucumbers, courgettes, squash and melons). If you do grow borage in your vegetable garden just be prepared to pull the occasional plant out that pops up where you don’t want it. The plants you pull out make a great addition to your compost heap. A winner all round!

are the easiest to grow, take up less space and have a shorter growing season. Give them the sunniest spot possible and a fertile free draining soil. They are compost lovers. Plant them where you have not grown any cucurbit family of plants (pumpkins, courgettes, cucumbers) last season. The best approach is to sow your seed indoors in September or October and grow them in a warm sunny environment before planting them into the garden from late October through to December. Otherwise wait until November and buy an already established plant from a garden centre. Good varieties are Hales Best, Charentais, Sweet Granite, Inspiration and Aspire. Plant up to three plants in mounds about one to one and a half metres apart or in rows similarly spaced. You could stagger your plants within the rows. One or two mounds is plenty. Harvest is ten to twelve weeks after planting and the ripening happens quite quickly. A ripe melon will usually detach itself from the vine.

this time of year, this quick and easy curd recipe will make sure no fruit goes to waste. Use the delicious tasting curd as a dessert topping, or to fill cakes, tarts or crepes, or even dollop on top of ice cream or spread on toast.
• 115ml grapefruit juice
• In a large microwave safe bowl, whisk together the sugar, eggs, egg yolks and grapefruit juice until smooth. Add butter cubes.
• Allow the curd to cool to room temperature, it will thicken as it cools.
Grapefruit are self fertile and do not need cross pollination. One tree planted in a warm, sunny and well-drained spot will do nicely for a home garden. They are hardy and long living, but do need space to grow - plan on a three metre radius or more. Exciting new varieties such as Golden Special or Star Ruby give fantastic flavoured fruit.
To plant, prepare a hole that is twice as deep as the root ball of the plant and a good half a metre in diameter. Work in mature compost. Particularly on clay soils put extra effort into a good planting hole and avoid any site that will have bad drainage in the winter. Feed twice a year with citrus fertiliser or compost. Mulch as heavy as you can going into summer to preserve soil moisture. Young plants will need watering in a dry summer.
A mature grapefruit tree will give you a vitamin C fuelled bounty in midwinter and spring. The fruit should be cut from the tree with secateurs. Test for ripeness by giving the fruit a twist - if it is ripe, the fruit will come off in your hand and will also feel softer to touch than a less mature fruit. Ripe fruit will also fall on the ground. Grapefruit will store best in a fruit bowl and need to be eaten one to two weeks from picking. Grapefruit are susceptible to guava moth which will make fruit fall off prematurely. If you can, put these fruits in a barrel of water or similar, to break the life cycle of this pest. we do it all. factory Warkworth

WHATRURALPROMPTED YOU TO GROW MICROGREENS? We own and run Happy Chicks - a pasturegrazed, free range egg farm with 1500 hens. We talk to our customers every day about eggs and especially their breakfast creations. Many wanted to create the ultimate café style breakfast at home. The top choice was the classic eggs benedict with real Hollandaise sauce, topped with microgreens. I happened to have a friend that was a plant scientist who was researching microgreens in urban vertical farming setups. I drew from his knowledge and spent nine months trialling seeds and the grow system before we got up and going.

Microgreens are the seedlings of leafy greens, vegetables and herbs. Microgreens are rich in vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals including carotenoids and phenolic compounds. Adding natural plantbased antioxidants into the human body by incorporating microgreens into your daily diet is a beneficial way to add nutrition as well as support cell and body function. Microgreens are fabulous for children too and some of the milder microgreens such as peas are a great way to encourage the kids to try these nutritious bursts as a snack or brain food. ARE THERE ANY CHALLENGES/ BENEFITS TO GROWING/RUNNING A BUSINESS IN MANGAWHAI? Mangawhai is a top location for growing and running a local business. The people who live here are so open and encouraging of new ventures. With many residents running their own businesses there are plenty of shared experiences that connect people. We have the privilege of having the time to have conversations with our customers and this is a critical factor in our business. We were fortunate to leverage Mangawhai Microgreens off our Happy Chicks pasturegrazed, free range egg business. Our customers were already looking for products that were local, premium, and beautiful to eat. Before we sold our first harvest the challenges were getting the environment perfectly controlled for these delicate gems. If one factor is not right, you can lose a crop - everything must be exact, timed and planned. What has been special is having our customers and local chefs involved in our diversification - they have been our testers, our listening ears and our supporters, and for this we have been so appreciative.
WHAT ARE MICROGREENS AND WHAT DO YOU THINK THE BENEFITS OF MICROGREENS IN YOUR DIET ARE?
For the last three years, Jeannie and Richard Walker have lived on a 10-acre block in Mangawhai where they run their Happy Chicks pasture-grazed, free-range egg farm and more recently, their new venture, Mangawhai Microgreens, selling nutrientrich microgreens to the local community.

31RURAL TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND, HOW HAS THIS HELPED YOU WITH YOUR BUSINESS? I worked for twenty years in Health and Education with the last three years Training and Assessing Leadership and Management in Healthcare. A sound understanding of applying business knowledge in operational and strategic business management is transferable across fields of work with many of the basic principles being the same. A lifelong learner myself, I thrive on learning something new, taking it from zero to up-and-thriving. HAVE YOU HAD TO OVERCOME ANY OBSTACLES WHILE GETTING MANGAWHAI MICROGREENS UP-AND-RUNNING? No real obstacles, but perhaps underestimating the demand that is out there. We started off with a small hut to house the vertical indoor farm and quite quickly we could see that we needed to triple the space. TELL US ABOUT YOUR GROWING PROCESS? We grow on a variety of mediums: hemp, coconut fibre and seed raising mix. Our vertical rack indoor farming method is specifically controlled by red, blue, and white led lights that replicate the sunlight, promoting density and elongation. Seed sowing and germination takes place in one area before being moved to the grow room which is temperature and humidity controlled. From sow to harvest takes between seven and fourteen days, depending on the seed, so it’s a constant turnaround of sowing and harvesting.
HOW HAS THE LOCAL COMMUNITY REACTED TO MANGAWHAI MICROGREENS? We have had an amazing response from our Mangawhai community. Our customers are so interested in what we do, and they have enjoyed the healthy addition to their menus. It has been interesting to hear how much people are enjoying dressing up their meals. Some of our customers say that they can’t send their dishes out “naked” anymore!

After a three-year break, the competition was back up-and-running and with many new contestants this made for the busiest year yet. Almost 200 entries were received across seven bacon and two ham categories. Judging took place over two days, with a team of great butchers and culinary experts inspecting and sampling our country’s finest bacon and ham products - all produced using 100% New Zealand born and raised pork. Gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded in each of the bacon and ham categories and then all of the gold medal winners were re-judged against each other to find the supreme winners who were crowned the country’s top bacon and top ham producers.

Rob mentioned that other local butchers also performed well at the competition. Mangawhai Meats leaving with a gold in their hand, acknowledged for their dry cured streaky bacon, and Maungi Meats taking away a bronze award for their tasty middle eye. A great confirmation that there are many talented butchers in the local community.
It’s great that the industry creates these types of platforms for butchers to have such publicity, as we need to be spoken about continuously so that we can carry on striving and not just surviving.”

Words Shannen Frear Suicide is everyone’s business, it does not discriminate. The construction industry is losing nearly one person every week to suicide, and 98% of those lost are men.

Mates in Construction is a non-governmental organisation that launched in New Zealand in 2019. Carrying out life-changing work to support the industry, Mates goal is to turn the tide on unacceptably high rates of suicide seen amongst those working in construction. A community development program, Mates invests in the workforce to lift the knowledge, tools, and confidence of workers, encouraging them to reach out to a mate if they can see they are struggling, or to reach out for help themselves if they know they aren’t doing well. Local building company, Smith Construction recently took part in a workshop with Mates, and an impressive number of Mangawhai construction workers were seen joining in and taking a moment to acknowledge the topic. Nick Smith said that he believes this

A moment in time to recognise the awesome work that Mates are doing and also acknowledge World Suicide Prevention Day. Alongside this, on Friday 9 September, Mates is on a mission to encourage industry across New Zealand to put tools down for ten minutes at 10am to start the conversation on mental health. They hope that this small gesture of shared action will bring them one step closer to becoming stronger together.

is an incredible organisation recognising construction workers and their mental health. The construction industry loses more workers to suicide every year than any other industry in New Zealand. It is a sector that is vibrant, exciting, and an integral part of the country's economy. But it can also be a challenging industry to work in - long hours, transient working conditions and masculine stoic beliefs all impact workers' mental health and wellbeing significantly.

36Over the last few years, people worldwide have been exposed to varying degrees of trauma, and the response to this trauma is what some health professionals call Post-Pandemic Stress Disorder - a form of COVID-19-induced PTSD. Nick Obradovic, a research scientist, explains that while humans are incredibly adaptable - sometimes our adaptability can be costly. The metaphor of the boiling frog leaps to mind. The story goes that if a frog is placed into a heated pot, the frog will immediately jump out. But if the frog is placed into a cool pot that is then slowly heated, the very gradual increase in temperature will trick the frog into thinking conditions are not changing, and it will eventually be cooked. Science MENTAL HEALTH WEEK STRESSPANDEMICPOST Words Bree Nicholls The Pandemic has been lifechanging for many around the world. We’ve been locked down in our homes, lost jobs, suffered heartache and said goodbye to more loved ones than anyone could have ever imagined. Research shows incorporating morning or evening routines which include daily movement, spending time in nature to help clear the mind or setting time aside to meditate and practice breathing exercises all help with focus and perspective. With enhanced awareness of how much lies out of our control, taking charge of the small worlds we inhabit is empowering. A great way to change the mindset and expand on feelings of freedom or autonomy is to alter the landscape around you. This could be free camping, finding a new walk in your area, or booking a trip to a different destination. Breathe deeply into the new lens of perspective it brings.
says this story is false, at least for frogs. However, swap the frog for a human, and it becomes more accurate when looking at how we adapt through traumatic events, having to deal with the symptoms of the “slow boil” in th e aftermath.
WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF POSTPANDEMIC STRESS DISORDER?

Another way you can improve your resilience and performance is to create boundaries and structure in your day by having clear communication and transparency both at work and at home. We must learn to maintain our pre-pandemic routines (if positive), make time for daily movement, and prioritise sleep. The pandemic blurred the boundaries between work and home life, and it is time to stand up and identify where we’ve leaned too far in one direction.

Some might not yet be ready to make this step towards professional help or may be struggling with money as the cost-of-living crisis deepens. For those people, it is important to identify a group of positive friends you can socialise with. Having a place to talk about your struggles and work through issues is a great way to start getting back on track.
Certain developmental ages have been hit hard, especially those in their formative years, such as young children and adults, already transitioning through what can be a challenging time as they move closer t o adulthood. While the effects of trauma can be debilitating, there are ways to manage them and in doing so, it is also important to remember it is a normal response to have such events.
One way to improve self-awareness is by working with a professional such as a psychotherapist, counsellor or coach, who can assist you with blind spots or adjusting harmful thinking.
What we can learn from this story is that it is crucial to check in with yourself and become aware of the shifts in physiology, emotions, thinking and behaviour. This pandemic has caused relentless stress despite many normalising the circumstances. However, like all traumas, the impact will show when the pandemic is over.
Start by checking in with yourself and building awareness around changes in your feelings, thoughts, and behaviour. Increased self-awareness supports good physical and emotional health, which is important as trauma changes your thinking patterns, beliefs, the brain, nervous system, and stre ss hormones.
While symptoms of Post-Pandemic Stress Disorder do vary, some of them include disrupted sleep, withdrawing from social situations, feeling out of control, becoming easily agitated, catastrophic thinking, and imagining the worst, as well as feeling hopeless and experiencing a lack o f motivation.
SO, WHAT CAN YOU DO?
Words Milly Nolan Born from the realisation that there weren't many places parents could turn to for help when their child was suffering with mental health issues, Totally Psyched offers a one-stop-shop of mental healthcare for families, kids, teens and young adults.

“I started Totally Psyched because I had always dreamt of opening a clinic that was going to be a cool place where kids and teenagers would want to come, and where families would feel safe, held and nurtured. I also wanted it to be a place where we could do as much for that child or teen within our capabilities under the one roof - rather than parents having to bounce from one clinic to another to get an answer or a result.” What makes Totally Psyched different from other mental health services in New Zealand, is that they have a multidisciplinary team of experts working together in the same clinic, all of whom are trained in different aspects of psychology – there are Clinical Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Occupational Therapists, Educational Psychologists, Behavioural Psychologists, Therapists, Psychotherapists and Counsellors. Together they provide specialist and international gold standard assessments and therapeutic treatment for kids, teens and young adults who experience anxiety, phobias, emotional volatility, depression, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Tourettes and Tics, Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), low self-esteem, sensory sensitivities and much, much more. “Having such a big team of people that are trained with different skills means that we can put on different lenses to see what is going on,” says Sarah. “We have weekly meetings where we discuss our more complex cases so that we can all think about them together and come up with a joint understanding of how we can help.”
38With numerous qualifications next to her name and over ten years experience as a Child and Adolescent Clinical Psychologist, Dr Sarah Watson opened the Totally Psyched clinic in Takapuna in 2016, and just this year has opened a second practice in Warkworth.

MENTAL HEALTH WEEK A SAFECHILD’SHAVEN
The advice that Sarah gives any parent is that if you can see your child is suffering in some way, don’t brush it under the carpet in the hope that it may resolve itself. “We have the tendency in New Zealand to have a “she’ll be right” kind of attitude, which means that a lot of times families contact us when something has been going on for a long time and has got to the stage where it’s really awful. And then it’s so much harder to fix. Whether you're a child, a teenager, or an adult, the more you live in psychological or emotional pain, the more you and everyone around you gets used to that being ‘your normal’. Don’t let it get to that point of terrible, act early and the results will be so much easier to achieve.”
Another important aspect that sets the benchmark at Totally Psyched, is that they are not counsellors. “Counsellors are very valuable and largely supportive at helping people through experiences such as grief, loss and friendship issues, but not mental health as they are not trained to asses or treat in that area.” At Totally Psyched, the team always starts with what is going on with the person and why. Sometimes that understanding alone is all that is needed to come up with a treatment plan. If further assessment is needed, they gather a 360

The journey of the Mana Mindset Well-being Workshop was created by INLP practitioner Tania Rupapera. Using her experience and knowledge gained over the past two decades, Rupapera has trained with various international philosophers, including Deepak Chopra, Dr John Demartini and Dr Richard Bolstad.
The ‘Mana Mindset Well-being Workshop’ is a place to connect with others and yourself through building self-awareness. Giving you the tools to self-coach, the Workshop is an empowering, wairua enhancing experience with learnings for life.
Acknowledging Mental Health Awareness Week, Mana Coaching Ltd invites Junction readers to attend the ‘Mana Mindset Wellbeing Workshop’ with a special offer of two people for one. Delivered online over two days, you will also receive two one-on-one coaching sessions.
During the two day online workshop you will receive a workbook, engage with others in breakout rooms and have time to write your wellbeing plan. The workshop focuses on bringing your attention to your beliefs, your core values, how you identify with yourself and how to powerfully set achievable goals in each area of Te Whare Tapa Whā. By nurturing and strengthening all dimensions, you support your health and wellbeing.

Words Tania Rupapera
The delivery of the workshop is co-facilitated online by Tania Rupapera and Toroa Cruden where they bring a beautiful, balanced energy and perspective of wāhine and tāne. It is a safe space, and confidentiality is insisted on out of respect for one another. This workshop is for men and women of all ages. Connect with your whanau and friends and invite them to join you.
The workshop is based on Te Whare Tapa Whā, a model created by leading Māori health advocate Sir Mason Durie. This holistic model describes health and wellbeing as a wharenui (meeting house) with four walls. These walls represent taha wairua (spiritual wellbeing), taha hinengaro (mental and emotional wellbeing), taha tinana (physical wellbeing) and taha whānau (family and social wellbeing). Our connection with the whenua (land) forms the foundation. When all these things are in balance, we thrive. When one or more of these is out of balance, our wellbeing is impacted.
If something in your life is challenging the wellbeing of one area, you can draw on the foundation of other areas until you can strengthen that area again. To build resilience for the hard times, you navigate your way to wellbeing by choosing one step at a time to strengthen each area. You will integrate this and design your ‘purposefocused life vision’ for how you want to be and what you need to do to have the lifestyle you want.
Facilitators - Tania Rupapera and Ngaia Cruden.

Is the grass really greener on the other side of the fence? The answer to this age-old question has escaped an answer for as long as it has been asked. But all will be revealed soon thanks to Seamus and Grainne Lynch, as they have recently completed a brand new build on the site next door to their former property.
The Lynchs moved to the Omaha area eight years ago in a bid to still be close to the city, but able to embrace a coastal lifestyle. The location for the house build was strategically chosen as it is near both the estuary and the ocean, with some water views. The houses on every side provide protection from the weather, meaning that the multiple outdoor spaces can be enjoyed without worrying about the wind causing havoc on any entertaining ideas, but as Seamus says, “you can still hear the waves.”
The open plan living area that houses the kitchen, living, lounge and dining area is unanimously everyone’s favourite space.

The house is clad in board and batten to create the requested aesthetic. An Enduroclad board and batten cladding system was used to accommodate the elongated walls. This unique system still provides the traditional look, but since a range of lengths can be created that are above 2.4m in height, it eliminates the need for a horizontal Z flashing on walls over the standard height.
44Seamus loves how big it is, and with the doors to the deck and patios slid open, it could easily have 100 people mingling without feeling cramped – “this is a space built for entertaining.”
The easy care yet striking landscaping was completed by the team at Shape Architecture, so as the plants grow, the greenery verdict will reveal itself.
Zach Forsyth from Forsight Builders, whose company completed the build, agrees. Zach also adds that the grooved ceiling, which people can view through the exposed chunky trusses, adds a unique feature. The decorative trusses were fabricated on site by the Forsight team, which isn’t something that generally occurs but shows the level of commitment this small team has to ensure that projects are completed on time, and at the high standard they maintain.

EXPRESSIONSARTISTICHIDDEN
What is Art? Jules Silk’s art classes in Matakana are making the joy of creative expression available to everyone.
Picasso’s view was that we don’t question a sunset, or the sound of birdsong, and we should bring the same open acceptance to art. It is the timeless, often instinctive act by which humans seek to convey their thoughts and feelings: a place to feel free.
Matakana artist and art teacher, Jules Silk, has been helping people express themselves through painting since earning her Bachelor of Arts degree at Whitecliffe College in 1996. She has been a regular exhibitor in New Zealand’s major art competitions, as well as exhibiting overseas. In that time, she has seen the impact that art can make in people’s lives when they realise that it is not just for the privileged few, but is a natural form of “Iself-expression.rememberteaching a class of young disaffected children,” she recalls, “and one child, in particular, was extremely withdrawn and uncommunicative. When he realised that he could paint recognisable pictures - of his own making - his view of the world changed dramatically. Suddenly he could speak. It was inspiring to witness.”

She points out that, as parents and teachers, we are all aware of how children respond to time spent drawing, painting - or just creating. As they enter their own worlds, their imagination captures them, and they experience the joy of creation, uninhibited by their skill levels or lack thereof. Research shows that painting, drawing and hand modelling, like sculpture, are among the most effective activities for healing and de-stressing, stimulating neural pathways in the brain, and increasing serotonin. They are recognised as one of the most immersive and relaxing ways of pushing aside anxiety and depression in young and old. Yet, as adults, we fail to make time for creative expression, and miss out on those benefits. Perhaps, as adults, we make presumptions about our lack of skill levels, and are reluctant to expose ourselves in front of others. Then again, in today’s modern life we are time poor, and often put our emotional well-being last in our list of priorities.
The question of what constitutes art has always been difficult to answer, and never more so than now when performance art and installation art have pushed aside the socalled “visual arts” in galleries, often heavily framed in political messaging. When Banksy paints a stencilled mural on the side of a public building, is it the thought or the image that makes it “art”? And what is the difference between Banksy and the graffiti “artists” who tag the New York subway?
Recent winter classes have included friends looking to share an interest together; couples finding time together outside work and family; and people looking to make new friends. All materials are provided and classes run for two hours, once per week over eight-weeks. New spring and summer classes are enrolling now to fit in with the school terms.
“I saw this while attending an international art symposium in Barcelona, where the exhibiting artists came from a dozen different European and Scandinavian countries. The level of bonding and communication was extraordinary. I couldn’t imagine it happening with any other shared activity.”

Listening to her classmates it is clear that this is the aspect that excites them. “It is amazing how quickly we forgot our inhibitions,” Annie (60) says, “and were soon producing work that excited us and made us eager to show it to our friends. Those weekly sessions are a highlight for all of us.”

Everyone has a picture inside them, she believes, and everyone’s picture is personal to them. “If you can make a mark,” she points out, “you are making art. It’s in us all. We paint as children, and we can paint as adults. The pleasure should be the same.”
Over the eight weeks of each term (two-hour sessions, once per week) she covers basic elements like tone, structure, colour selection and composition, but the main objective is to quickly get her students producing work that is unique and expressive of themselves.

The boating fraternity is waiting with great anticipation for its unveiling. Promised for later this year. So we can’t tell you too much about it now. Suffice to say, it will carry Tim’s stamp of good thinking – and its prac tical application. So, although Tim has always been out in front with his thinking and designing, he’s meeting the market this time. While designing high-performance multihulls is high on the fun factor, it’s not quite the mainstream market. “And the home builder has all but disappeared.”
Other well-known boats of Tim’s design are the catamaran Seawhey and the popular Weta – a small trimaran racing class.
“When you analyse the boating market,” says Tim, “what you find is that what the majority of boaties want is a 6m runabout.” So that’s what Elotri is. Only different.
Tim’s been a successful yacht designer. His uniquely elegant cruising catamaran Pulse can be seen out on the waters off Sandspit – and in the Hauraki Gulf – most weekends. The mast, boat and sails were designed and built by Tim. His boats are fast. Pulse is. And so is X-Factor, a giant bright yellow catamaran that won the Coastal Classic Race from Auckland to Russell in the Bay of Islands in 2009. Winning the famous race had become a personal quest for the late Jon Vincent - a mutual friend - so he turned to Tim for the design to achieve it. Mi ssion accomplished.
“The big challenge is that conventional boating is not fuel-efficient, and so not eco-friendly,” says Tim. He reminds me that while a normal car may use six litres of petrol for 100km, a jet ski uses 25 litres and the average powerboat about 50 litres.

Genuine Oak is one of Hurford’s most popular flooring ranges - and for good reason. With its quality French Oak lamellas, tongue & groove installation and extensive range of colours, it is hard to look past Genuine Oak.
Elotri addresses all that. It will be very light – only about 500kg on the water. It’s designed as an inshore cruising boat with a clever lifting roof. Low windage while underway and plenty of headroom while at anchor. That roof supports 720W of solar panels. So yes, Elotri will be powered by the sun, not fossil fuels. It will carry lithium phosphate batteries. It’s the future of boating on the Hauraki Gulf.
First, a Facebook friend asked him to help with the assembly of a fiberglass replica of the turret of a Second World War bomber for the film Shadow in the Cloud. That went well, and seeing his skills, the producers of the Netflix series Cowboy Bepop asked Tim to join their set design team at the temporary studios they established in East Tamaki. The scripts were out there and required Tim to design and build extensive sets, including underground bunkers and the engine room and bridge deck of a spaceship. Big budgets. No worries.
TIM CLISSOLDBOFFIN
Then came the distraction of being involved with America’s Cup campaigns in Bermuda. “Keeping those wing masts going took a lot of work.” And other sailmaking projects too. And just so his head and his hands didn’t become idle during the Covid years, he has been building the innovative (natch) Elotri, an electric-powered Gulf cruising triple-hull launch in a shed near Sandspit.
“Best call in the morning, mate. In the afternoons, I’ve always got a pot of epoxy in my hands and it’s going off, so I must keep working.”
This neatly sums up Tim Clissold, Warkworth’s boffin extra-ordinaire. He’s both a man of great intellect and an eminently practical, hands-on doer. A designer and a builder of many things.
Hurford’s are excited to launch Genuine Oak in a Parquetry option, a timeless addition with a beautifully prefinished board, that is available in six stain colours and comes complete with seven coats of UV cured Treffert Lacquer. In the person of Tim Clissold, the great Kiwi legacy of innovation with boats – all kinds of boats – is alive and well in Warkworth.

Lately, though, Tim has turned his creative and practical skills to building sets for movies. With equal success.
I’ve been based in Mangawhai for the past couple of years, around many of my good friends. It’s where I make most of my music, with the help of my boys Kalem, Javarne, Cully and Jim. We have a small circle and are constantly working on projects, getting involved with each other and helping where we can. I’ve been lucky to have my family and partner Marine by my side, who also really supports my aspirations.
I’m enjoying embracing the early stages of entering the music world and being able to do it with my boys as a crew from the ground up. Now that I’ve released my first single, ‘Thankyou, Goodbye’, I feel like I’ve broken the ice, and I’m excited to keep the ball rolling and share new projects. It’s more of a hobby at the moment, but I have the vision to build a platform and take things to the next level.

I’ve always wanted to do something musical but never really figured out what that may be. I started playing some musical instruments at a young age, but this didn’t result in anything. I felt a lot more connected to hip hop and rap and listened to music a lot. It wasn’t until recently that I decided to jump on a mic and give it a go myself. A few of my boys had dabbled in making musical instrumentals and rapping on their projects. It was really from
I listen to Mac Miller, Kanye West, J Co le and others. I think these artists are creative geniuses and are idolised for their versatility. Similar to them, I want to be able to experiment with different styles and keep my music interesting by not sticking to one particular theme.
Growing up in Wellsford and living within a tight-knit community, Sam was surrounded by a few local legends who influenced his musical journey. Skateboarding was a monumental part of his life, and with the skate culture came a love for hip hop and rap. Developing a passion for music, Sam also noticed the incredible impact that it can have on people.

The popular trails returning this year include Bigger Big Omaha Trail, Vineyard Trail, Duck Creek Explorer, Totally Tamahunga, Mahu West Wonderland, Pohuehue to Puhoi, Mahurangi Masterpiece, Goat Island to Pakiri, and Hoteo and the High Country.
Warkworth Walks has always been about getting visitors onto trails that might not normally be accessible to the general public but which highlight the natural beauty of the Mahurangi region, and providing local hospitality along the way in the form of packed lunches or catered stops.
Claire is looking forward to the excitement of the weekend itself. “It’s about the treat of a day out where you don’t have to sort out all the logistical details yourself – simply sign up and let us be your hosts. It’s just so lovely to be out there walking,” says Claire.
Make a long weekend of it and take in a selection of the great walks on offer while also experiencing local hospitality, camaraderie and food. Check the website and remember to book early to avoid disappointment. 4-6 November.

Committee Chair, Claire McDonald, says, “as we finalise details on our plans for our 2022 event, it makes me realise how much we missed it last year. Of course we can access some of these wonderful places year round, but there are those special ones which are by invitation only and we really look forward to visiting those.”
Also new for 2022 is Walk on Water, a walk and kayak combo trail that takes in the gorgeous trails between Snells Beach and Sandspit, and then a kayak trip up the Matakana River where guests will disembark and grab a beverage before heading back to Warkworth.
“The new walks on the program offer something different, both for newcomers and our regular walkers,” says Claire. “It is nice to offer these alongside many of the popular favourites. I’ll be heading out west to the Hoteo for the first time, along with an east coast walk, and I’m looking forward to tho se already.”

And yet another new trail for this year is Kawau Old Coach Road. Guests will take the ferry to Kawau Island and walk the littlevisited old coach road running along the eastern coast of the island. A local guide has lots of stories to tell and there will be some fine hospitality at the end of the road.
After the disappointment of having to cancel the 2021 event, fingers are crossed that it’s lucky thirteen for Warkworth Walks in 2022.
Brand new to the 2022 program is the Takatu Rock Hopper taking walkers along the southern coastline of Takatu Peninsula, culminating in a visit to Omaio, a stunning private garden that is sure to please.

A big day out is being planned by Warkworth & Districts Museum to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the arrival of 5,000 American servicemen in Warkworth during World War 2. marking its 80th anniversary with an awesome day out in our beautiful museum grounds,” said Museum Manager, Victoria Joule. History and military buffs will be in for a thrill as the Military Re-enactment Society of New Zealand will be putting on spectacular displays using a range of US marine vehicles, including WW2 jeeps, an M3 scout car and a 6pdr Anti-Tank Gun. They will also have a display tent with a SCR-536 Handie Talkie, SCR-625 Mine Detector and a BD-71 Switchboard and will be available to answer questions.
So put a note in your diary now and save September 24th for the Museum’s big event of the year.
The men were part of 100,000 American troops who arrived in New Zealand between 1942-1944 to support the counter-offensive in the Pacific following the bombing of Pearl Harbour. Warkworth was one of the biggest camps outside Auckland and Wellington. Significantly outnumbering locals, the army and marine personnel were based in 23 camps in and around Warkworth - from Kaipara Flats, to Dome Valley, Matakana, Pakiri and Whangateau. The Warkworth landmark properties Riverina and Little Riverina housed officers, and the Warkworth Hospital camp looked after the sick and wounded.

Two fully restored original US army huts will also be unveiled on the day. One hut will include a re-creation of the interior as it would have been when in use by the Americans during the war. The second hut will have information panels and photographs of the period. Earlier this year, both huts were reroofed, courtesy of the US Embassy in New Zealand. The Embassy maintains an ongoing interest in its country’s history and relationship with the area. “Restoring the army huts and organising the September 24th celebration has been a real labour of love by our volunteers,” said Victoria. Special displays inside the museum and fun activities for the kids are being planned.
The Whangateau Folk Club and music at the hall was founded and is hosted by local bluegrass band The Pipi Pickers, and bluegrass has always played a big role in the musical schedule. This will be evident on the September club night on Monday, 26 September, featuring some of the finest bluegrass to be had in New Zealand with the return of all-girl band Hot Diggity to the Whangateau stage. Club nights are the last Monday of the month, with concert nights slotted in once a month depending on the schedules of visiting musicians. Everyone is welcome to come and sign up to perform in the first half of club nights, or just listen and enjoy the company.
Not many communities offer a sea and tree change. Ara Hills, located in breathtaking Orewa, does both. Bordered by the protected bushland of Nukumea Reserve and overlooking Hauraki Gulf, Ara Hills is close to Orewa Beach and the Hibiscus Coast.
More information about the hall, including how to hire it for your next event, is on the website. The hall is owned by Auckland Council and run by a volunteer local committee which meets quarterly. The committee AGM is scheduled for Monday, 5 September and all locals interested in the running of the hall are welcome to attend. www.Whangateau.co.nz
August club night on Monday the 29th features another touring musician - soul-folk singer songwriter Monty Blevins from the South Island. The following weekend Gumboot Tango from New Plymouth will bring their energetic and quirky folk take on kiwi songs to the hall on Saturday, 3 September.

that restrictions have lifted, regular club nights and monthly concerts have resumed. The hunger for great live music to return to Whangateau was evident with the sold-out show by T-Bone in early July, an outstanding 5 piece band featuring the best folk musicians New Zealand has to offer. Led by award-winning songwriter and performer Gerry Paul, T-Bone had the crowd roaring with excitement. July also saw the return of the popular Whangateau Folk Radio hour featuring two up-and-coming talented musicians in a variety radio show format. This night demonstrated the outstanding acoustic excellence of the all-wood hall and gorgeous kauri ceiling when the power went out mid-show and it became a near-magical, intimate evening of music with no amplification needed, the stage lit with phone flashlights.
