A NEW BRANCH FOR BAYLEYS
SNELLS BEACH FOOD MARKET
NEW OWNERS FOR KOWHAI COAST

"The median sales price in the area has increased 102% in just five years", says director Bayleys in the North, Mark Macky. "Wellsford is a huge growth area.. and the recently announced motorway extension will make the town even more accesible".
Your new weekend pit-stop has to be the Food Market in Snells Beach, located just across from The Warehouse. You’ll be greeted with the friendly faces of owners Jen and Matt, and full time staff member, Amanda.
Kowhai Coast Jewellers in Warkworth is under new ownership! They carry international jewellery and watch brands and offer full jewellery repair, remodelling and bespoke manufacturing services, including CAD design and insurance valuations.
The market stocks fresh fruit and veg, and now boasts an extensive range of gourmet, organic and gluten free products.
They are also licensed to buy jewellery and offer sale-on-behalf, so that you can top up your Christmas shopping funds. Whether you’re looking for a simple silver chain, a $15 watch battery, or a diamond ring worthy of royalty, Kowhai Coast is the one-stop-shop for all your jewellery needs.
The office will have three salespeople: Denise Pearson, Sarah Wells and Andrew Scott, along with Administrator, Jaz Anderson. "The team is small, yet specialised with more than 15 years experience" Macky Says. Welcome to the area!

JOICO BRIDAL HAIRSTYLIST OF THE YEAR FOR INSPIRED HAIR BY ROBYN MUNRO Robyn’s passion for wedding hair is year round, but she works six or seven days a week in the summer season, just to keep up with her regular clients and demand for her wedding hair services. Winters are spent educating others in the mystical arts of bridal hair, and refreshing her image gallery to provide inspiration for her summer brides. Robyn’s Joico Bridal Hairstylist of the Year Award was well deserved, beating 26 other entries. Robyn’s photo topped them all, winning her a position on the Joico team, working for the bridal runway at Auckland fashion week on September 2. This gave Robyn another creative opportunity to showcase her skill and create on a nationwide bridal beauty stage. www.inspiredhair.co.nz
BRIAR ROSE FLOWERS Briony and Alan Batten purchased Maria's Florist in February last year and have taken it through a couple of transitions. Firstly, the location changed in April 2016 to Riverview Plaza, on Kapanui Street, Warkworth. That provided much more sheltered store frontage and better parking. Now with the official trading name change to ‘Briar Rose Flowers,’ and a new website with more flexibility, they have really made it their own. The team of experienced florists can assist you in catering for all your floral needs, whatever the occasion. www.briarroseflowers.co.nz 09 425 9016
A NEW CHAPTER FOR THE VIVIAN After five years at the helm, Helen Crosby has passed on the baton as Director of The Vivian Gallery to Scott Lawrie. Scott, who lives in Pakiri, is a branding expert and a keen art collector, said: “Helen and the team have done a wonderful job putting The Vivian on the arts map – not just in Matakana, but in New Zealand." The team are now ready to shape The Vivian’s future with a rebrand, new shows and an exciting program for 2018. Until then, it’s business as usual, and we can't wait. 39 Omaha Valley Road, Big Omaha 09 422 9995
'CARO WITH LOVE' OPENS Caro from ‘Caro With Love’ is a bright fixture at the Mangawhai weekend markets, and has recently taken the plunge and opened a dedicated retail space in the heart of Mangawhai Village. A brick and mortar store has always been a dream of Caro, and when the space became available, she jumped at the chance. It’s filled with expertly curated homewares, gifts, accessories, kids clothes and prints from local artists. Caro has put together a great selection of contemporary, stylish items that have her unique stamp on them. Open Wednesday to Saturday, directly opposite the domain. 104 Moir Street, Mangawhai www.carowithlove.com

Don’t be fooled by the spring lambs and daffodils, there’s still a chilly nip in the air, and what better excuse than to rug-up in NZ-sourced and Warkworth-made fashion knitwear. The Knitting Establishment Ltd on Woodcocks Road has produced top-quality knitted apparel for the last 35 years. About four years ago, Simone Maddren and her business partner Benji Tipace bought the enterprise from her parents, Jan Kell and Gavin Coomber. “We used to make fashion knitwear for New Zealand stores such as Glassons and Farmers, however, in the late nineties the market was flooded with cheap imports from China,” Simone said “We decided to change tack and create something uniquely kiwi.” With tourist numbers on the rise and drawing on their fashion background, the company turned its attention to manufacturing prêt-àporter garments. And demand is growing: after a generation of Lycra, spandex and stretch polyester, it seems that natural fibre crafts such as knitting and crocheting are making a comeback. In a world increasingly dominated by multinational corporations, it’s refreshing to hear that The Knitting Establishment is a family affair, and by buying their wares we’re supporting our own. Benji and his brother, Chito, are qualified programmers, which involves running, repairing and writing patterns for the sophisticated electronic knitting machines. “We also have lots of mums and daughters and relatives working here,” Simone smiles. “One of our major points of difference is that we offer a stockroom service. We send orders out on the same day that they come in. The garments are on the retailers’ racks the very next day.” Simone and Benji’s company supplies tourist outlets, and increasingly more domestic fashion stores, including local stockists Katya Maker, De Lovely, Sheepworld and Warkworth Menswear. Koru Knitwear is also found overseas in Germany, USA, Australia and Canada. The yarn used for their Koru Knitwear label is a luxuriously downy blend of 50 per cent merino

lambswool, 40 per cent brushtail possum and the highest quality Mulberry silk. “All of our yarn is made in Lower Hutt and our 100 per cent natural possum fibre is the highest quality blend on the market,” Simone explains. Here’s an interesting fact: the NZ possum fur industry generates retail sales of between $100 and $150 million every year, with international tourists accounting for 85 per cent of total retail sales. What’s more, the industry employs around 1,500 people and also contributes to the conservation of our country’s flora and fauna through culling about two million possums annually. Tips for brides: a lacy shawl or a versatile moss-stitch shrug (with or without fur trim) are perfect for flying away on a honeymoon; or as a going-away outfit, there’s the popular two-tone jacket with a textured cable pattern on the collar and cuff. Luckily for our Junction readers, Koru Knitwear has extended its sale at the onsite factory shop until the end of September. Thinking ahead to Christmas, a gift with a Kiwiana flair would be just the ticket to send to friends and relatives in the northern hemisphere. www.korunz.co.nz 71 Woodcocks Road, Warkworth

PROFILE
IAN MARRIOTT WORDS
ROD
CHEESEMAN
After having two sawn-off shotguns shoved in his face and a bowie knife held to his throat, Ian Marriott is deadly serious about hospitality. It was the early 1990’s, Acid House music was on the way out, Brit Pop on the way in and Ian Marriott, a 24-year-old kiwi lad with a back catalogue of running successful Auckland bars, decided to spice things up with a trip to London. He landed at The Swan in Mitcham, a well-known dive for dealers, wide-boys, and thieves. In those days, and possibly even now, there was a Swan near every run down housing estate in Britain. “There were three people in there that you could talk to who didn’t want to kill you,” Ian says with absolutely no sense of irony. "I was outta my league and had no idea how violent some of the drinking culture was in Britain.” Luckily Ian doesn’t give up easily, he says it would have played out differently now, but back then he continued to refuse a ‘lock-in’ even when the two shotguns appeared from beneath long coats. The two geezers looked Ian in the eye and for a second he thought he was going to die over the price of a late night pint. But they turned tail and shot the front windows out instead. Ian Marriott had passed the ultimate landlord test. From then on he was awarded the honorific title, Guvnor or Guv. That’s high praise from the locals, especially for a lad from Whakatane. Ian’s love affair with bars, beer and music started at age 14 when he would sneak behind the bar at the local soccer club and serve a few Lion Reds. After leaving school he got involved in the Auckland music scene, helping an up-and-coming rock star called Russ Le Roq. Sadly Le Roq’s music career didn’t work out, but those of you that enjoyed Gladiator, Cinderella Man or a Beautiful Mind, know that Russell Crowe’s acting career has gone pretty well. “Russ was always good to us. If he didn’t have the cash to pay us then he would take us to his mum’s house and she would feed us. I would serve Coca-Cola and toasties to the school kids at his Auckland underage club The Venue.” Ian was in the studio when ‘Russ’ recorded his first demo and still has a copy. Music has always

been the centre of Ian’s world. He has written for many music and entertainment publications in Australia and New Zealand. Music has also helped him turn drinking dives into damn good pubs. From Sunday jazz sessions that attracted Desmond Dekker and Roy Harper, to open jams with members of Pink Floyd and Deep Purple. “Sometimes they would play, sometimes they would just hang out and listen to the music. They were treated like all the other patrons, to feel welcome and made comfortable.” And therein lies the key to Ian’s success; his hospitality ethos is about building a community. I walked into Tahi Bar for an after work pint one Friday arvo and left having made a friend. He believes in connecting people, introductions are made and collectives formed. Couples have met and married at Tahi and sons have come of age to join their fathers for a pint.
When Ian and his German born wife Silke opened Tahi Bar on Neville Street, in Warkworth, on February 28, 2008, craft beer was mostly unheard of. Ian was one of the first purveyors of multiple independent brews in the country. “People thought I was mad, speculating on beer. Customers came in and would say they wouldn’t come back until I had Lion Red on tap. In fact they did come back and are still regulars, but I don’t serve Lion Red.” Nearly a decade on, Ian is stunned that he has four breweries, including his favourite 8 Wired, and a cidery close by. Ian has helped open the minds and develop the palettes of the beer drinking masses, and encouraged a few friendships along the way. Well, I’ll offer a cheers to that, thanks Guv. 1 Neville Street, Warkworth 09 422 3674

creations are a free-spirited, cross-cultural melange; whimsical, mischievous, feminine. Now based in Puhoi, it’s no surprise that her garments have a strong bohemian flavour.
She is continuing to scorch a blazing trail. In spring 2017, she launched her new bridal label, Brooke Tyson Ritual, and after just five months she’s turning heads internationally. Brooke has been approached to showcase her delicate creations at a bridal designers’ trade show in France next year, and she’s receiving requests for couture gowns from brides around the globe.
“My new bridal label is going viral. Brides are more adventurous today,” Brooke says. “I pay attention to intricate details and I collaborate with artists and jewellers to produce truly unique pieces. I source my fabrics, sequins, laces and beads from here and overseas, however, all my garments are made in New Zealand. It’s important to support local industry.”
Born and raised in the Australian Outback until the age of seven, her family moved to Nelson where she spent the next seven years. After leaving school, the creative teenager talked her way into a job as a tailor and picked up the art of pattern making.
So, what does an insanely creative live-wire do to recharge? “I’m a dancer with a band called Weird Together, they do remixed world music.” And just for fun, she dances at “Shimmy Ya” in Warkworth. It’s a wild and vibrant mix, much like her fashion, of Latin American, Afrobeat, Dancehall and Hip Hop.
Her love of travel took her to Asia, Europe and South America, which inspired her avant-garde collection. Influenced by ancient tribal cultures, Brooke’s

It was love at first sight when Tanille Elley and Kristy Holt met on ANZAC Day 2014. Both shy and too scared to ask if the other would move in, Kristy placed an advertisement for a flatmate, which Tanille answered! A marriage proposal followed, one year to the day after their first date. The happy couple travelled from their home in Australia to get married in Matakana, because they had seen it in a magazine article and on The Bachelorette. They organised everything online. “Elope! It’s the best, so is sharing a bottle of Dom Perignon!” Tanille says. “You can have all the ‘bells and whistles’ without the long guest list, indulge yourselves.”

It takes a special kind of community to realise a $2.1 million project, but that’s just what happened when plans to refurbish the existing hall in Waipu grew into the ambitious Celtic Barn project. The small community got behind the initiative and raised over $800,000. The beautiful new building boasts huge rustic interior beams and wonderful park surroundings. 600-auditorium style and can also be used for indoor sports such as basketball, netball and indoor soccer. The lobby area is ideal for weddings. It can seat around 180-auditorium style, or 130 for dinner. The Celtic Barn has excellent kitchen facilities and all rooms have large bifold doors opening out onto the Caledonian Park. Being in central Waipu means there is a wide range of accommodation options nearby and the stunning Bream Bay beaches are only a few minutes drive away.
Since opening in 2015 the Celtic Barn has been a gracious host to many weddings and events. These include the 140th anniversary of the Waipu Rugby Club, The Waipu Primary Easter Carnival, the famous Art ‘n’ Tartan Show and the Waipu Highland Games. With such a prestigious venue and great location, the possibilities for its use are endless. OMAHA BOUND WORDS

CHEESEMAN
Just when you thought everything was sorted for your big day, family and friends start calling to ask where they should stay. As if you didn’t have enough to organise! Well have no fear because ‘Swannie’ is here. Nicola ‘Swannie’ Hooper is the superwoman of the holiday home letting business at Omaha Beach, and has been gliding in to save the day since the business took off in 2013. “It was an idea we had whilst having dinner with our neighbours, but rather than letting it fade away we kick started Omaha Holiday Houses,” Nicola says. As residents of Omaha themselves, the O.H.H team, realised the importance of caring for premium coastal property. Word-of-mouth has seen them rise from a few friends’ houses to almost 50 properties. Nicola is quick to make it clear that wedding guests are welcome, but wedding ‘parties’ are not. She is responsible for millions of dollars worth of properties. Prices start at $500 per night, and go up to $1100 during peak season. Most guests are very happy with their accommodation and most homes house two families, which halves the cost, but Nicola does get the occasional, ‘odd’ phone call. She’s had to deliver a parmesan cheese grater to Auckland and replace toilet paper because it was ‘too flimsy.’ The mother of two takes it all in her stride. Last summer she employed a water tanker driver around the clock, to keep the guests hydrated and happy. Most of the homes are architecturally designed and Omaha has one of the best beaches in the country. Nicola meets all the rental tenants, including some ‘very famous faces’. But discretion prevents her from telling us more. The company slogan ‘Don’t let Sunday ruin your Monday', encourages guests to stay for an extra night, which at beautiful Omaha is something you just have to do. www.omahaholidayhouses.co.nz

RUSTY PELICAN
The Rusty Pelican was the first pizzeria restaurant and sports bar in Matakana and has been serving good food, cold beer and in a warm atmosphere since 1998. The ‘Rusty,’ as it’s lovingly known by the locals, was established by Daniel and Julie Baturic who sold it a few years later. Ten years on The Rusty Pelican, is a thriving restaurant and sports bar and has become a vibrant and popular hangout. Daniel’s catering and hospitality ethos is behind the revived success of the iconic Matakana Restaurant and Sports Bar. He believes that generous, well-priced meals, made with fresh quality ingredients and served in a family friendly atmosphere, is the key to their winning formula. Daniel says the restaurant now offers new menus built around what he terms ‘organic culture’. “We cannot be certified as one hundred per cent organic, but we have adopted an organic culture, which means making handcrafted natural food, using only quality ingredients and certified organic local produce where possible". It’s a step in the right direction for local foodies and visitors alike. As well as embracing the organic culture movement, the restaurant has also undergone extensive refurbishment. The Rusty Pelican’s Sports Bar, is now ‘sporting’ a brand new look. It’s open every day for lunch and dinner, and the ambiance

The combination of a large diverse menu, great value for money and the weekday and weeknight specials, keeps the locals very happy. Daniel says the changes have made the Rusty Pelican one of the busiest eateries in Matakana. “Frankly, it’s absolutely buzzing!” As the business has evolved the team at the Rusty Pelican has also been able to give back to the community. As well as providing a welcoming restaurant and sports bar for locals, Daniel, Stu and new business partner Luke Revell, support many community fundraising initiatives and sponsor local schools, sports teams and clubs. “We want to provide a perfect home-away-from-home for our clientele, which are local people and the increasing visitor population. Sue Hatton is a successful Ponsonby real estate agent, so my first question, safe in the knowledge that she has marketed and sold more homes than most of us ever will, was, ‘are real estate agents immune to the emotion that is usually the deciding factor for purchasing a home?’ Sue throws back her head and laughs. “Of course not, I fell in love with this house and bought it whilst out on a Sunday drive!” The 268 square metre home was designed by local architect Rob Earley and built in 2012. It is the last house on Tamahunga Drive and enjoys a stunning north facing aspect with views of beautiful rolling countryside. Sue points to a rosemary bush just outside the window. “That’s where my neighbours property is where I live in Ponsonby. It’s the best of both worlds, I love the feeling of space and tranquillity here, while still being connected to the community in Ponsonby and Herne Bay.” The home has been clad in a mixture of weatherboard and Shadowclad. It is remarkably unobtrusive considering the natural beauty of the surroundings. This has been achieved by creating a multi-level interior to follow the land's natural sloping contour. The long and low mono-pitch roof maintains a constant gradient, much like the surrounding hillsides. North facing glass catches the sun, keeping the house warm even in the depths of winter. Sue lives with her partner Sam and mum Maureen. “Not including my mum was never an option. My grandmother lived with us when I was growing up and was a huge part of my life. I think the trend, especially with European families is to live separately, but we are all really close.” Maureen has the entire western end of the house with a separate lounge and her own bathroom, complete with claw-foot bath. JULIE'S ANIMAL REFUGE WORDS
MARLA
FERGUSON
It’s a quiet morning at Julie’s Animal Refuge, the sun catches a few dust motes in a solitary shaft of light, while a cat lazes in the late winter sun. All the animals have been fed and a quick round of tidying up has already taken place. Twenty years ago Julie Thompson volunteered for the SPCA and found her passion: hands on care for animals. From there she set up independently and created a purpose built shelter on Carran Road in order to focus on stray animals and finding them forever homes. It grew to a point where they needed to relocate the shelter up to its current location on Kaipara Flats Road. All of the Refuge’s funding comes from the weekly garage sale, adoption fees and donations. These animals are de-flead, desexed, microchipped and vet checked. All funds are used to help house, feed and care for the animals. Ross Lynch, of Warkworth Farm and Pet Clinic, predominantly cares for the animals but Julie works closely with all of the local vets to help keep costs down and still get adequate care for all the animals. Julie and her team of committed volunteers rescue more than just cats. Currently, the property also houses ponies and goats. “We don’t turn away animals unless we are full. Sometimes we just physically can’t take anymore" Julie explains. “Our local community is wonderful and very supportive.” Adoptions of cats and kittens are always welcomed and donations are much appreciated. 354 Kaipara Flats Road, Auckland Garage Sales 9-12pm, Wednesdays www.juliesanimalrefuge.nz

SARINA KHOO: FACIAL RECOGNITION WORDS

CHEESEMAN
Faces and expressions have fascinated Sarina Khoo for as long as she can remember. Her early works whilst studying at Unitec were developed from nudes and figurative pieces to portraiture, specialising on the female face. “What I am interested in still to this day, is conveying emotion through expression,” she says. “One of my favourite things to draw and usually what I do first are the eyes.” There is an element of design in her work and Sarina admits she is influenced by illustration, particularly from the world of fashion. After graduating she travelled and lived in London, working in the fashion industry as a visual merchandiser. She didn’t have time to paint or draw, but was inspired by the creativity she was immersed in. “I documented this in photos and in a diary, but it wasn’t until I got back to New Zealand that I set up my studio again and started to paint.” Sarina works from her home studio in Mangawhai Heads, a dedicated space joined to the house with plywood-clad walls. Her signature style is to use wood as the base of her image. “My husband is a builder and we were renovating our home at the time. There was a lot of plywood lying around the place, and I have always loved the organic nature of wood and woodgrain. I decided to start experimenting by working directly on the ply and became hooked on the idea.” Sarina chooses grains in the wood that will work with the face, complementing it with the woods natural rawness and inherent flaws. Pencils, paint brushes, gouache, pastels, cotton buds, makeup, eyeshade and charcoal contrast one another, and along with the woodgrain help tell the story of our own beautiful imperfections. www.sarinakhoo.bigcartel.com

If Jeanette saw one more mushroom she’d throw away the camera. Fungi had been the inspiration for this photographic artist for about four years. Some 2,000 pictures later, change was calling. It wasn’t until early 2016 that the ‘ah-ha’ moment occurred. Her creative mind screamed ‘yes please’, while her business head agreed that there was a gap in the market. Rainwater drizzling down a car windscreen was the catalyst for her brilliant new phase of work. Put simply, Jeanette draws and paints on glass then sprays water onto the surface allowing abstract patterns and vibrant colours to emerge. But she must act quickly, she has about 10 minutes to capture the ideal image before the water has its own agenda and washes her artwork away. “Nobody is doing this, I wish I’d started earlier. My objective has always been to use the camera to create abstract results. This is an exciting combination of photography, art and the unknown,” she said. An exhibition in January 2018 at Mangawhai Art Gallery will showcase Jeanette’s recent work. She will squeeze this into her busy role of managing the gallery, but wouldn’t change the madness for anything. “More than 10,000 people visit our space over a nine month period and we change displays every two weeks. Mangawhai is a melting pot of artists, workshops, art trails and exhibitions. We rival any city talent and the work I see blows me away and my walls at home are one hundred percent filled with local art.” If Jeanette could give advice to her 20-year-old self she would have started earlier and told herself not to worry about her health scare, it wouldn’t define her, it would teach her the struggle was worth it. But would she have rehomed 137 stray cats over the years? That’s a separate story in itself. www.mangawhaiartists.co.nz/jeanette-vickers

It was a clear, crisp night when the glamorous and talented folk of our region flocked to the newly restored Warkworth Town Hall, for an evening of excellent food, great company and Junction’s Annual Awards ceremony. Ilona Rogers hosted the event with her charismatic spirit and presented the awards to the winners of each category. Congratulations to all the nights winners especially the Junction Overall Award Winner, Katya Maker Boutique. We would like to thank everyone who took the time to vote and the guests who turned out to support the evening. A very special thank you to Boutique Barn & Vintage Hire, Carlton Party Hire, Ravish Catering, Takana Native Trees, Matakana Liquor, Miss Botanicals, Earth Candles Co, Red Barn, Benny the DJ, the W ine Growers Association, Fiona from the Town Hall and Kim from Mooi Mooi for their help in making the event such a great success.

GUY CLAPSHAW: TASMAN ECHO ALPHA WORDS
ROD
Guy Clapshaw was a flyer during the halcyon days of aviation, or as he puts it: “when flying was dangerous and sex was safe". His latest book Tasman Echo Alpha chronicles his days with TEAL, later Air New Zealand, from the mid 1960’s. The company had three aircraft, pilots were banned from fraternising with the hostesses and landing at night in Hong Kong was a buzz like no other. “Sure it’s better, safer and faster now, but the excitement and the romance has gone,” Guy says from his 120-hectare farm at Pakiri. The airlines ban on fraternising with air-hostesses seems to have been a complete disaster. Guy delights in the fact that he not only broke the rule he married one! Apparently the biggest cad in the airline was a Captain Bond. Bond thought he was James Bond and tried to bed all the hostesses, but they reckoned he lacked James Bond’s stamina and christened him ‘Oh Oh Six and Half!’ When Bond retired he omitted to tell his wife. For two years she would drop him off at the airport where one of his girlfriends picked him up and took him to Orewa for a few days of horizontal folk dancing. Inevitably he got caught out when Mrs Bond phoned the airline to enquire about his amended arrival time and was told he’d retired two years ago!” Guy is still flying, although now aged ‘70 plus GST’ most recently piloting Jean Batten’s Percival Gull for the television movie Jean filmed at Kaipara Flats. He tells a yarn with more vigour than a man half his age and has an incredible memory and the wit to match. Fittingly his latest book sells more
CHEESEMAN
copies at the airport than anywhere else. Guy’s love of aviation and story-telling began when a Messerschmitt 109 ‘belly-landed’ on the family farm during the Second World War. “The German pilot joined us for tea, and stayed the night. Next day the local constable came over, arrested him and gave him a lift to the Police Station on the cross bar of his bicycle!” Guy’s school friends believed his father led a squadron of aces in daring dog fights during the day, and ran night bombing runs over Germany at night. When the classmates were invited to a surprise birthday party Guy’s father was fawned over by the parents. It quickly became apparent that Guy hadn’t let the facts get in the way of a good story. His father was a dairy farmer during the war years; a tough occupation that now occupies Guy. “I’m sure cows have a set of wire cutters stashed away that they use to cut fences,” Guy says with a chuckle. The Village Bookshop at Matakana has stocked Tasman Echo Alpha ahead of Father’s Day and it is a gripping insight into a bygone era. So after all these year’s what’s Guy’s favourite plane? “Oh that would be like asking a man with eighteen wives, which is his favourite. You love them all, but they are all different…The Douglas DC-8, but don’t tell the others!”

DR LIBBY: LIVE IN WARKWORTH Dr Libby (PhD) is a nutritional biochemist, best-selling author, and speaker, and will be coming to Warkworth for the first time this month. In her two hour live event, Dr Libby will discuss common confusions around food in her down to earth style. Some helpful tips for eating well while travelling: • Avoid mindless eating/drinking on the plane. Eat lightly, stay hydrated and avoid coffee or alcohol if you’re on longhaul flights as these will only dehydrate you further and disrupt any sleep that may be forthcoming. • Plan ahead Plan accommodation around how close you will be to nourishing food options. Or opt for accommodation that has a kitchenette or kitchen, especially helpful to allow preparation of simple meals like breakfast. • Incorporate vegetable juices or smoothies As soon as you land, or even while you’re at the airport, look for a nourishing vegetable juice to fill your body up with the nutrition it needs. • Travel with an organic vegetable powder A great way to ensure you have nutrients on hand during travel. Take an organic vegetable powder for the trip. This will allow you to keep your nutrient intake as high as possible, even if you find options are few and far between. • Always order a side of vegetables Most places will offer sides of vegetables, or even if they don’t advertise them, they’ll make them up for you. Steamed greens make for a nutritious side dish to any meal.

Lock in Sunday 8 October to indulge in plump creamy oysters paired with beautiful local wine. The peak of the Mahurangi oyster season is fast approaching and to celebrate, The Matakana Oyster & Wine Festival will be held at the Woolshed, Matakana Country Park. Junction has teamed up with Mahurangi Oyster Farmers Limited and several local farmers to showcase these salty little rock stars. Oysters from this region are renowned for their wonderful fresh taste, with fans reporting a less salty flavour compared to other growing areas. But if oysters are not your thing, there’ll be other tasty cuisine to enjoy. Expect a vibrant day out with live music from The Rubics, shucking competitions (professional and novice), cooking and wine demos, and face painting and a craft table for the kids. More than 30 fantastic stallholders are ready to party, but there’s still time to join the fun. If you’d like to exhibit your local wine, beer or food, share your expression of interest by emailing the festival organisers. October marks the beginning of the visitor influx to the area and is a perfect chance to share your offering. Tickets to this all-weather event are limited and selling fast. For added convenience, book a return trip back to Auckland via the special event Mahu Express service.

JAZZ WITH WARKWORTH BRASS
MANGAWHAI GARDEN RAMBLE
Sunday 17 September, 2.00pm
Saturday 11 & Sunday 12 November
Warkworth Brass is hosting the Sunday Afternoon Jazz concert at the Matakana Hall, featuring Big Band Jazz and guests The Steve Sherriff Trio.
The Palmers Planet Mangawhai Garden Ramble and Community Fundraiser will have an amazing line-up of at least 18 gardens this year. Over half are new to the ramble or haven't been exhibited for many years.
Warkworth Brass has undergone a change of musical style over the past few years, diversifying into pop and Jazz/Swing. Warkworth Brass incorporates saxophones, percussion and keyboards into their traditional line-up. The band performs various genres of music and welcomes new members.
Organisers plan to offer gardens with night viewing options, plants and cuttings for sale and some will host children specific activities to encourage the whole family.
The Steve Sherriff Trio is an Auckland based group of professional musicians who play the gig scene and many corporate functions all over the country. Their infectious jazz will complement the big band style of Warkworth Brass.
After 14 years the popular ramble continues to grow and is a draw card for gardeners from all over the North Island. Last year a record 500 tickets were sold and a whopping $16,000 raised for the Mangawhai kindergarten and Mangawhai Plunket groups.

Repair Cafés are an international movement, which aims to bring people together and fix broken things instead of throwing them away and filling up landfills. Mahurangi Wastebusters is inviting handy volunteers to come along, be the fixers and share their skills. Members of the community can also bring things along for fixing: toys, bicycles, small furniture or electrical items, clothes, socks, knives and tools for sharpening.
