imagine Have you thought about hosting a party but the entire process was too overwhelming? Or maybe it slipped your mind between work, school, and the busy schedules of your family members? The majority of us on Kadena are a world away from home and sometimes the important events in our lives get overlooked. Although it may seem that without immediate family around there is less need to focus on life’s big events, this doesn’t have to be the case. The wonderful thing about the military community is that no matter where you go your friends become family. So this year, focus on making each event – big or small – memorable. Planning a party can be stressful but don’t let it get the best of you. Whether you’re planning a birthday, baby shower, squadron party or a small get together with friends, you can save time by utilizing our facilities for hosting your perfect party. Our very own Kadena Force Suport Squadron has so many options for making a special day come together seamlessly, and here’s how:

Okinawa’s Ancient Heartbeat Written by Arielle Sullivan • Photos by Ryan Burger

O
kinawa. A beautiful island, nestled in the heart of the Pacific Ocean, rich in culture that can be found no where else in the world. Okinawa is a land filled with castles and deep-rooted history. It is a land inhabited by a people who are kind and resilient despite having weathered war and conflict. It is a land filled with customs and respect. Out of Okinawa’s history are born many beautiful traditions still practiced today, one of which is Eisa dancing. Passed down through generations, these prayer dances are at the heart of festivals and events throughout the world. The history of Eisa is shrouded in mystery. The story most widely believed is that of the Buddhist priest, Taichu Jojin. While on his way to China from Kyoto, it is said that he introduced the native people of modern day Okinawa to Buddhism. To help the people remember complicated Buddhist prayers, dances were created from which Eisa is thought to have originated. With a history as deep as our beloved Okinawa, it’s difficult for historians to agree on the exact origins of Eisa. However, witnessing these complex performances leaves you with the profound knowledge that this is an important tradition not soon to be forgotten.
Taichi Oshiro
The Obon Festival in mid-July is when anscestral spirits visit the mortal world. Families prepare food, flowers and light lanterns as offerings to these spirits; many also visit their anscestors’ graves to to call them home. The third and final day of Obon is Ukui, or Seeing Off Day. On Ukui, communities gather together in the streets beating drums and performing Eisa to traditional music in honor of their anscestors’ return to the afterlife. As time passed, each community developed their own unique style of Eisa. Modern Eisa now offers complex choreography and intricate costumes alongside the traditional sounds of folk music, drumming and singing. The Atsuta Young Men’s Association, or Atsuta Sei Nen No Kai, from the Kitanakagusuku Village dates back 60 years.

Wearing purple headscarves and beautiful vests of blue, white and yellow they are known for their extraordinary jumps throughout their performance. Consisting of community members ages 16 - 25, they practice rigorously from June through August with a day of rest on Sundays. With sweltering Okinawan summers on the horizon, evenings offer a small reprieve from the heat. As day turns to night, this musical heartbeat begins to surface and the transcendent melody of Eisa awakens local communities. The sound of the drum can be felt all throughout your body; the reverberations originating in your heart, spreading like a wild fire. Observers become participants as the intensity of the dance draws in your very soul. The beating drum, the stick twirling through the air, and the complex footwork of each drummer is dizzying. There is, however, a sense of ease and obvious respect and pride each performer has for their community and culture. Should someone drop their stick or lose their place in the dance, they gracefully fall back into place as if that miscalculation was intentional.
Wataru Kina
The performances are complex with a large number of individuals, many of whom are performing different instruments and dances. There are three different types of drums: the ufu-deeku, a large barrel shaped drum, the paaranku, a small hand drum with one head, and the shime-deeku, a medium sized hand drum with lacing around the edge. Additionally, you will see hata-gashira holding signs indicating the name of the Eisa group and the community they represent, tii-udui, rhythmic dancers as well as jikata and jiutee, musicians and singers. The complexity and grace of the performances are a testament to the amount of time each group spends practicing and perfecting their Eisa dances. Just as the performances themselves have changed, so has the tradition. These dances are not only performed during Obon but are now taking place during many festivals and competitions throughout Japan and the rest of the world. One of the largest festivals is held here on Okinawa. The 10,000 Eisa Dancers Festival takes place annually on the first Sunday of August on Kokusai Street in Naha and showcases both Okinawan as well as visiting Eisa dancers. The breathtaking performance is not one to be missed. Firmly rooted in traditions, the diversity of so many Eisa dancers in one place is sure to be an experience that will stay with you throughout your life.

s an ocean-loving person I’m open to almost any water activity. However, I’ve never made a point to go kayaking. After my recent adventure, though, I am remiss for not having spent more time sea kayaking and am thrilled about this newfound hobby. The sea kayaking and snorkeling adventure to Sesoko Island with Kadena Outdoor Recreation is one of the most exciting excursions available to us on Okinawa!
Our journey began on a beach in Onna. The early morning haze clung to the bottom of a bright blue sky, promising perfect weather. We were separated into pairs, given a paddle, kayak and a short lesson on paddling techniques before beginning our adventure. With the ocean before us, cliffs hanging beside us and the crystal water below, we followed our guide as he effortlessly led us toward a cave carved into the rocks ahead. As we paddled out further and the water became deeper, the breathtaking views combined with my beating heart quickly transformed nerves into excitement. A calm washed over me as our kayaks cut through the small waves of the East China Sea, my breath harmonizing with my paddling. Before too long, we came upon an alcove. We put on our snorkel gear after wading through the shallow water to shore. Once back in the water, the coral reef opened up below us to a menagerie of tropical fish swimming about. We made our way to the large cave and as the coral dropped away, the water darkened. Our guide led us toward the back of the cave where he showed us crevices

RECREATION filled with hundreds of fish. We turned around to see the sun illuminating the underwater world, the bright teal water affirming the cave’s namesake, Blue Cave. Our guide directed us out of the cave and we were given some time to snorkel the surrounding reef. The ocean began to change, the tide pulling and the waves building. We made our way back to the kayaks and set out on our return journey to the beach. The current was a bit stronger making the paddle back even more exhilarating. As we went along, we were given a little bit of information that helped us become more intimate with the ocean; depth is determined by the color of the water, the darker the color the deeper the water. As we approached shore, our paddling eased, the water calmed and the wind died down to a faint breeze. About three and a half hours after leaving shore we were back where we started. I could feel the afternoon’s adventure in all of my muscles, though during the trip I was too captivated and the scenery was too beautiful to notice. I’m already looking forward to my next sea kayaking trip to Sesoko Island. It’s a totally new and different way to explore Okinawa, offering a unique perspective of the ocean.
