MEMBERSHIP NIGHTS AND OTHER CLUB MEMBER PERKS By Leya Bonorris
“Membership night is all about giving back to our members as much as we can to add value to their membership.” – Aaron Feinberg Enlisted Club Manager
Great food. Amazing prizes. Good company. What’s not to love about Membership Nights?! For those of you familiar with these events, you know Membership Night is one of the best perks of being an Air Force Club member. Though the term “credit card dues” tends to put a damper on membership, going home with a full belly and the latest in techno gadgets will more than make up for dues paid. Monthly membership dues are based on rank, start at $4 for junior enlisted, $9 for NCO grades and $18 for officers. So now you’re asking, “what else do I get?” Besides the monthly membership nights for the adults in the family, the Enlisted Clubs and the Officers’ Club host quarterly family membership nights. Here, the kids can wear themselves out with games while the adults sit and converse.

BE READY FOR THE JOURNEY
If you’re a fan of scenic views and natural surroundings, hiking is probably an activity that you very much enjoy. Well my friend, you are not alone. I love hiking! I also love telling stories, so I shall now share with you some of the areas in which I enjoy hiking, taking pictures and clearing my mind. I have hikes for all levels, ranging from beginner to advanced. Whether you want to start small, bring children, or challenge your abilities, I have a hike for you.
-Into the Woods By Christine Phillip Photos By: Att Eachus & Nagi Marie Quirk
BEGINNER: HIJI FALLS Hiji Falls is tucked away nearly one and a half kilometers in the Okinawan jungle. However, you won’t need your machete for this trek. Most of the trail is covered with a wooden walkway, making the journey to the end easy and enjoyable for the entire family. Along the way, you walk beside a beautiful river guarded by multi-colored rocks of all shapes and sizes. Plant life, animal life, and yes, even bug life can be appreciated in the noisy yet tranquil jungle that surrounds the path.
12 WWW.KADENAFSS.COM
One of my favorite highlights of this hike was a long, wooden bridge that aided our crossing from one side of the river to the other; I enjoyed everything about that bridge. The jungle opened up above us allowing us to gaze at the mountainside and the twinkling river below us. The bridge gave way to a naturally formed tunnel and until that point, I felt very secure walking through the forest on man-made structures and wide open paths. However, the chasm that rested between the two sides of the path brought to light the
reality that I was perhaps going to have to work harder to get to the waterfall at the end of the path. Thankfully, that was not the case; the hike maintained its level of ease, and the trek to the end was spectacular. The waterfall stood proud as it fed rushing water into the pool below. The sounds of falling water, chirping birds, and the whispering breeze through the trees made this hike memorable and worthwhile.
RECREATION INTERMEDIATE: ISHIKAWADAKE Ishikawadake is a bit of a Jekyl and Hyde hike. It begins on a steep but paved road, leading you to a play castle you can climb to enjoy the view of the tiny expressway and vast ocean. But this hike isn’t over quite yet, it is only just beginning.
Adjacent to the castle is a semihidden pathway that leads you straight into the depths of the jungle. We cautiously climbed through the tall, surrounding grass, over fallen trees and under low branches. Large roots have grown
above ground providing natural staircases making the trek up Ishikawadake a bit easier. Once at the top, we took in the amazing views of mountainous terrain, cityscape and ocean.
VENTURE 13
play
ADVANCED: KATSUUDAKE This hike is a little longer and more difficult than Ishikawadake due to the steep, rocky trail and higher elevation. Hiking Katsuudake is very fun, but requires attentiveness and careful determination; one wrong step could cause an injury. I suggest sturdy shoes or hiking boots and a first-aid kit with bandage wrap just in case! The trail takes you into the jungle, up the mountain, through tall grass passageways and over heavy rocks. The surrounding views are beautifully painted with every shade of green and brown. There is a long stretch in the thick of the jungle with no view of the sky until you are close to the top. As the trail continues up narrowly, you realize you are nearing the end of the trail; the Earth reaches out beneath you offering an unmatchable view of the island. At this point, my fear of cliffs kicked in and I needed to rest. My fellow hikers climbed the last bit of trail to the top 14 WWW.KADENAFSS.COM
while I relaxed and took in the views of the East side of the island. Just then, an older man walked by, smiling as he excused himself for climbing so close to me. His smile inspired me to overcome my fears and take the last small hop to the summit. I am so glad I did. The views of each side of the island offer unparalleled beauty. You can see everything and it gives you a sense of pure joy seeing what Mother
Nature has to offer. Looking up from the ground is lovely, but the view from the top is even better! Want more information on these hikes and other awesome outdoor activities? Contact Kadena ITT about visiting Hiji Falls and Kadena Outdoor Recreation to get started on your next adventure to Ishikawadake or Katsuudake!

eacefully resting alongside a vigorous city of innovative technology and ancient beliefs, offering tranquility and solitude to a city that never sleeps stands the breathtaking peak of Mt. Fuji. Though many pay mind solely to the rugged exterior of the mountain, Fuji-san has long been viewed as a soul bearing, sacred, religious symbol and a gateway to another world. Mt. Fuji’s colossal surface naturally shares the otherwise segregated layers of the Earth. It stands with the people on the ground, gives rest to the birds in the sky, and tickles the passing clouds. The first to receive nourishment from the sky’s gentle rain, Mt. Fuji passes down not only essential sustenance for the life below, but also wonderment and mystery to those looking toward it.
TRAVEL
Though Fugi-san is a sacred mountain, it is not against religious beliefs to climb its rocky terrain; Torii gates, temples, and shrines decorate the path leading to the summit. At each of the 10 stations along the way a unique inscription is burned into the surface of your wooden walking stick. The climb is not easy, but making it to the top is an accomplishment that a very small percentage of people will ever achieve. Climbing Mt. Fuji is challenging and physically demanding, but it encourages you to persevere. When you’ve made it to where you want to be, whether it be the top or not, you’ll feel a sense of accomplishment that you will carry for the rest of your life. The memories you’ll create climbing with your family, friends, or on your own will always serve as a priceless reminder of what’s really important to you in life.
Travel to Mainland with ITT to climb Mt. Fuji!

I saw these four simple words at a friend’s house a couple of years ago, the sentiment of which I didn’t immediately grasp. At the time, my husband and I were on our first overseas tour, newly married and I was fresh to the military life. We were blessed with wonderful friends and a quiet first year of marriage with minimal time apart. Our second year was different. We weathered many long days, conflicting schedules and our first ‘real world’ deployment. As part of the military, we are faced with many situations that are uncharacteristic of what many would consider a normal life. As such, we learn to love our nonstandard lives, memorize countless

acronyms and perfect the art of flexibility. There are struggles, though, that go hand in hand with the opportunities given to us by the military. Outside of our world, deployments don’t exist. In “the real world,” as I’ve heard it called, we’d get to pick where we live instead of being told where we move and we wouldn’t have to job search every three to four years. We would be able to plan things like vacations and birthday parties far in advance without harboring the expectation that they will be cancelled. Despite it all, though, we find a way to make the best out of our situations. We each have different ways to cope with the curveballs and though I have no children of my own, the women I look to most for guidance in this way of life are the military mothers I know. Their wisdom has had a priceless effect on my life and I know that because of them, I am a better wife and friend. When the time comes, I also know I will be a better mother because of the knowledge and experience they have shared with me. This Mother’s Day, we wanted to thank and honor military moms by interviewing some from our own community. Mano Crawford, Leya Bonnoris, Maggie Scheetz and Satsuki Valdez were kind enough to answer a few questions to offer different perspectives on how they cope with the dynamic life of military service. Combined, these four amazing women have been living the military life for over 25 years and each have a different perspective to provide. It’s sometimes difficult to maintain a positive mindset during periods of separation, especially when children are involved. For Maggie, it’s the little things that help her and 19 month old son, Greyson, get through tough times like her husband’s current TDY. “It is the first time that he has been gone where my son is really old enough to notice. The past few weeks have been an adjustment for the both of us as I am learning his reactions to his father being gone and working to accommodate his feelings. He will sometimes come up to me and say, ‘Daddy?’ as if he is asking me where he is. Although he doesn’t understand what I am saying, I still take the time to explain to him where his dad is and how soon he will be home.”

FAMILY, YOUTH, & TEEN
Maggie For some, the way to handle busy schedules is to create their own structure by working from or outside of the home. Mano Crawford, a local Okinawan has filled her time with her own inhome business selling handmade ribbons to cheer squads and individuals as well as balloon decorations for sporting events, weddings, and parties. Mano’s outlook is a positive one as well. “I don’t think of our schedules as conflicting; his schedule changes too much to predict. That being the case, I make my own schedule based on household and school priorities and he makes his based on work. When everyone is home we try to have family dinners or our kids really like to eat at Chili’s. When he’s gone I like to take the kids to movies and local parks.” Having a strong support network is also important for many spouses as they navigate their way through military life. Hindsight is always 20/20 and we don’t always realize what we have until it’s gone, or more likely, until we’ve PCSed. Maggie relies heavily on those around her, as well as family and friends in the States, for support. “I have been able to meet some really great friends while living here. My neighbor is especially such a blessing. My son and her daughter are the same age and we frequently rely on each other to help with our kids. However, FaceTime is the best thing that could happen to my family. We are able to keep in contact with everyone in the States and let my son get to know them. I am extremely close to my mom and it is so nice to be able to talk to her at the push of a button. It makes us feel a little more at home every time we talk.” Satsuki Valdez, another Okinawan, says of herself that, “I am a stay at home mom that takes care of the house. I am what you can call ‘traditional Japanese.’ I take care of the home and kids and my husband works, but he is wonderful because he helps so much whenever he can.” Satsuki relies heavily on her husband and her family here on Okinawa. With the added element of both Spanish and Japanese cultures in their marriage, Satsuki and her husband embrace the opportunities this presents for them and their children. “He learned Japanese and I know some Spanish.
Satsuki He teaches the kids Spanish and I teach them Japanese so it’s best to never come to our house because you could get lost in translation with a mix of three languages going at once!” Leya’s outlook defines our ability to be flexible. The first time her husband left for an extended period of time, she says she “learned very quickly how fast things can change, so in order to ‘survive’ this lifestyle I was going to have to be flexible and not count on anything until it was actually coming to pass – total letting go of any sense of power.” As a full-time working mom, Leya explains that working was never a question. She says, “I love working. I love knowing that I get to wake up every day and do something productive and then get paid. That definitely gets complicated with the military life. I have been passed up for really good jobs because they didn’t want to hire military spouses. I’ve stayed at not so great jobs because I didn’t know if we were staying two months or one year more…I value the opportunities that have come with this military lifestyle and am proud and happy to be a working mom.” As for her daughter, Leya says “I love that she is experiencing such a unique childhood. I love that she isn’t really ‘from’ anywhere yet. I hope this helps her understand that while we are citizens of the most amazing country, there is a whole world out there to explore. I hope that when she is older, she looks back at photos and thinks how cool it was that her daddy represented our country and all the unique opportunities we were afforded.” So go ahead and bloom, moms! Whether you’re at home with your children or working full-time, your service and dedication to your family speaks volumes to those around you. The role you play within your family, unit and the military is completely invaluable. You affect and mentor more people than you know just by being a positive example of a mother, wife and friend. Tim Burton said, “one person’s craziness is another person’s reality.” To the rest of the world, our lives probably seem bizarre and even a bit surreal given the places we’ve been and the places we’ve yet to go. The reality is, though, we wouldn’t have it any other way.
