iking is not only good for your body, but it is also good for your mind. Because of the variation in terrain, even on a single trail, hiking will work your body in a way that is different from what you will experience in a gym. This keeps the activity more interesting and can help you to get through plateaus in your workout routine. Besides the obvious physical benefits, spending time outdoors has been proven to boost your creativity, improve your mood and help fight the common cold and flu. Research even indicates that attention span and creativity can be increased by up to 50%. We’re heading out on the trails and you’re invited to join us on our next adventure.

A

s a little girl, I grew up with household names like Steve Prefontaine, Jackie Joyner Kersee, Florence Griffith Joyner (Flo Jo), Michael Johnson and Marla Runyan. I grew up in a house that tape-recorded the Summer Olympic Track and Field events in case we weren’t home to watch them live on TV. I grew up knowing that in the Olympics there’s no 1600 meter run, but instead it’s a 1500 meter run. I grew up watching world and Olympic records break. A bit of background if this seems confusing... My mother was a Division One runner at the University of Michigan, and throughout my childhood I heard stories from my grandpa about my mom’s success. Watching her run was like watching a gazelle, he’d say. In the 70s when my mom began her high school running career, she had to run with the boys since there wasn’t a girls’ track team yet created. She was even among the first women athletes on the track and cross country teams at the University of Michigan. I had dreams of some day becoming a talented runner like my mom – a woman who was a part of an historic time in women’s athletics no less. I dreamed of out running all the boys and leaving them in my dust just like my mom had. I’m sure you’ve guessed by now that those dreams never actually came to fruition. As I got a little older, my idealist views of running waned and I came to the realization that I wasn’t a gazelle. I quickly became disenchanted with the idea of running for fun. To me, there was no such thing. I wasn’t very fast and I also didn’t have the endurance of my distance running friends so I wrote it off as just not for me. It wasn’t until a couple years after I graduated college that I thought about picking up running again. It was on my own terms and I was able to ease into it. There was no pressure to beat a certain time or even run a certain distance so I started out small, building my endurance incrementally a few weeks at a time. Before I knew it, I was running 15 miles a week. That soon became 20, then 25. For some, running 25 miles a week is nothing. Running five miles in one go is a warm up for the more serious runner but for me, it was a huge accomplishment. Never in my life had I run five miles consecutively! It became a routine part of my day; a new normal. I was healthier, more active and had more confidence not just about my physical state, but confidence in a sound mind. One of the things I love most about running is that it goes along with the flux and flow of my life. I can do it anywhere we live. If I have 30 minutes, I can get a good, full-body work out in. I don’t need machinery or a team, though I hear running clubs are great! I can get outside and clear my head with some fresh, albeit humid, Okinawan air. Running gives me peace. It’s my thinking time and it helps maintain the structure of my days. It’s my morning quiet time to think and be thankful with no distractions. But these days, life is busy and if I can get through ten miles a week, that’s a good week. Although I can sometimes be discouraged by the number of miles I’m not running, I have to remind myself that I am still a runner. I am still logging miles, wearing out running shoes and washing running clothes every week. And that’s really the point, isn’t it? We don’t need to be professional athletes to be active and healthy. I think being healthy is about finding a balance between those two. It’s about finding what works for your life and your body. Right now, I can’t run as much as I used to, but that’s okay. I find other ways to stay active like going on walks with friends and chasing two dogs around. When your body is healthy, chances are, your mind is healthy, too. If you’re thinking about starting down a new running path, stop by the Risner Sports Pro Shop and check out their running gear! Motivate yourself to achieve your goal with compression socks and sleeves, lightweight apparel, the proper running shoes or even a Nike GPS watch to track your progress. No matter how you stay in shape, the Risner Sports Pro Shop has the gear you need!

Just Say No! Written by • Missy Cornish

N

ew Year’s resolutions are a dime a dozen and so I say “just say no” to resolutions. Now don’t get me wrong. I am not saying you should not have goals and be excited to start fresh or begin something new, but I am telling you there is a process to making it work and worth your efforts. Let’s go back to your school days either in High School or College. You go to school to get a degree, and there is a lengthy process that has to be planned, prepared and carried out so that you reach the ultimate goal: a diploma. The very first thing is making the decision to go to school and having a long term goal of a certain degree. You go to the experts in many cases to be sure you are on the right track, but you know there are classes to take, homework to complete and tests to pass. Once you determine the path you want to take, you have to decide the classes that are needed for your first semester. You register for them so that they work with your schedule. Your calendar comes out and you set it in stone. You make a plan for math on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9 am and English and History on Mondays and Wednesdays at 10 am and 11:30 am. You know that you will have to make plans around those days and times because making it to that class, accomplishing the needed notes and learning the information is getting you one step closer to your goals. Deciding to skip class, forget the homework or not study for a test are strides in the wrong direction to passing that class, understanding the material and getting the results is what you are shooting for. Once the semester is done…you are not. You have hit goals of completing a certain level but you have to register for the next batch of classes and start working on this level. Each semester completed is making your path to your final goals closer and more of a reality. Once all the classes have been taken and the grades posted then you have the diploma in hand. Are you done? Are you going to sit around, watch Oprah and eat bonbons the rest of your life? Of course not. You hit that huge long distance goal only to start reaching for the next goals in life like a career using the education you worked so hard to obtain. Now take this analogy and apply it to your New Year’s resolution. If on 1 January I decided I was going to get a degree in Chemistry and after a couple of weeks I had not hit that goal… would that expectation be realistic? You know the answer to that. So why do we insist on thinking that our health and fitness goals are any different?

Obedience training is not just about training your dog, it is also about training yourself. Often, people forget that our perfect pups are actually a very different species from us and communicate in ways that are completely foreign to us. Dog training is a learned, technical skill that takes consistency and commitment to learning the techniques and implementing practice with your dog. The new year is a popular time for people to take on new hobbies or let go of bad habits, but it can also be the perfect time for you to learn how to teach your dog new skills and develop pleasant and adorable habits (and tricks).

family Since moving to Okinawa, I have learned to appreciate the beautiful scenery and history that surrounds us. I began to realize that I needed a way to keep record of the memories I’ve made and continue to make so I decided to take up photography. I have been fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to learn along side my talented co-workers who happen to be professional photographers. Combined, Att Eachus and Ryan Burger have over 20 years of experience in photography. Not only were they able to give me insight on the appropriate camera choice when I was purchasing my first advanced, mirrorless camera but they’ve also shared their knowledge with our entire office. Learning these tips and going out on photo excursions to put them into practice has helped me learn my camera as well as learn my photography style. Photography is subjective in nature after all. The first photography excursion Ryan took me on was to Cape Zampa, specifically to photograph the lighthouse. I learned a lot of techniques from that photoshoot and have since then gone on to photograph other places, objects and people. Photography is an amazing hobby to learn, especially while on Okinawa because there are so many ways to capture this island’s beauty. It’s always evolving with new techniques but there are also classical techniques that have stood the test of time and will be sure to improve your photographs. I’ve included some tips from the pros to help you get started on a new, dynamic hobby!

Att Eachus, Videographer, Photographer Long-exposure photography, a technique of using longduration shutter speed to capture an image, is both beautiful and surreal. It captures one element that conventional photography does not: time. Long-exposure photography is my favorite genre because of the beautiful and mysterious atmosphere it creates. An extended exposure can reveal what the eyes can’t see: the soft streaky clouds, silky smooth water and soft ambient light. It’s a simple technique with numerous online resources to guide you step-by-step. With basic photography tools and a little patience and practice, you too could capture these mysterious, beautiful images. Ryan Burger, Art Director, Photographer Photography is typically seen as an ultra-expensive hobby or profession with a high cost of entry – especially in the realm of off-camera flash and artificial lighting. Between lights, light stands, light modifiers, triggers and everything in between, you can really make a significant contribution to your own personal debt crisis. But this doesn’t have to be the case. Cheap, effective light sources have just as much capability as their costly counterparts when used correctly to enhance your images. They may quite possibly be the cheapest addition to your camera bag! I started out my photographic journey with the complete destruction of my wallet. Big, expensive studio mono-

lights, portable power packs, the works. Eventually, I came across the miracle of speed lights – the small battery-powered flashes you commonly see on top of someone’s camera. If you pull this light off of your camera and move it to the side of your subject you can radically change the way your image looks by creating directional light, shadow and texture – and it can all be done on the cheap!

Ryan Burger (burgerphotography.com) Model • Miranda Johnson Nikon D800 • 70 - 200mm 1/160 sec • f/4 • 100 ISO Lighting • YN-560iii, triggered by RF-603, handheld SaberStrip to the right of the camera.

Flashes from manufacturers like Yongnuo can be had for as little as $50 which can also come with a wireless remote trigger! Want to soften that light? Toss in a white umbrella (or “brolly” in photogspeak) for under $20. Forget the light stand, ask a friend to hold the light for you and you’re good to go. Now in the case of the portrait of Miranda you see here, I used a Yongnuo YN-560iii flash, the included remote trigger, and an interesting light modifier called a SaberStrip. The SaberStrip is essentially an up-armored shipping tube that you mount your small speedlight inside. The light passes through a strip of fabric on the side of the modifier to light your subject. I’ve had a lot of fun with the SaberStrip here on Okinawa as it is water resistant and wind-proof. Ask a friend to hold the light (as I did in this shot) and fire away! There’s a lot more to off-camera flash than simply buying one and turning it on. You have to learn the different qualities of light, how to measure (meter) it, where to place it and how to balance it against the natural light around you and much more. It’s a fantastic and fascinating process that I highly recommend you educate yourself on. Take a class, participate in an off-camera flash workshop, join one of the many fantastic Facebook-based photography groups here on Okinawa, read some online tutorials or watch a video!
