travel Why did you pick Australia? I don’t know. We’ve just always wanted to go there. We’ve talked about it for a long time so we knew we definitely had to do it while we live in Okinawa. What’s your favorite thing about traveling. Perspective. I love my life, and I have been extremely blessed in where I have gotten to travel. Where I come from, living in Japan and traveling to Australia simply does not happen often, so I love the warm feeling I get when I realize how lucky I am to be where I’m standing. I always take a ton of pictures and share them with my family so they can feel like they’re on the journey with me. I travel for me and for them.

What is something interesting about Australia or Sydney that the average person doesn’t already know? I think it’s really interesting how today Australia is a desirable travel destination, however due to its harsh climate and location it was originally used by the British to exile criminals. Did you meet anyone interesting along the way? Our tour guide, Henry, was very interesting. He had knowledge of literally everything going on in the city. He knew everything from the history of the different areas to why construction was happening and what they were building. I always love the opportunity to meet new people and share life stories. People are interesting, and I love learning about where everyone has been. Everyone has a story to tell. You just have to take the time to listen. The question everyone always has: did you develop a taste for Vegemite? It’s salty…not quite my thing, but others I know who have tried it really enjoy it. What was your favorite meal? What was the most Australian thing you ate? My favorite place to eat was this delicious chocolate bar near the hotel. Our group went there every night before bed for hot chocolate and snacks. They had this giant ice cream praline meringue and it was delicious. The most Australian thing I tried was kangaroo burger and emu pizza. Both are a little gamey for my taste. What new things did you try that you maybe wouldn’t have otherwise tried? Definitely the kangaroo and emu meat. I mean when in Australia, right? Anywhere else I probably wouldn’t think to try it. What do you wish you would have experienced that you didn’t?

What was your favorite part or moment of the trip? It’s hard for me to choose a favorite moment because I had so many favorite moments! I really enjoyed taking in the views of the city, especially the Opera House and Harbor Bridge. Petting koalas and kangaroos was great, too. Were there any misconceptions you had about Australia prior to your trip that were proved wrong? Was it what you expected? Australia was what I expected. The people are very nice, it’s very clean and it is very beautiful.

14 WWW.KADENAFSS.COM

I would love to dive the Great Barrier Reef someday. We weren’t even close to there, but next time that’s definitely something I’m going to look into doing. What did you learn about Australian history? A ton! That’s all the tour guide talked about. It was great! As I said before, though, the original purpose of Sydney doesn’t quite match the current thriving metropolis it is now, and I think that’s really interesting. Did you stumble upon any hidden gems during your time in Sydney? I loved The Rocks Market. It’s only open on the weekends, and they have a lot of vendors with unique products for

sale and most of it is handmade by the people selling it. You meet a lot of interesting people there who have fascinating life stories, and then you get to buy a unique product from them and it turns souvenir shopping into something really special. Although it’s an English speaking country, did you find that there was a bit of a language barrier? It’s English but it’s different English. As our 18th FSS Commander would say, it’s the Queen’s English. He’s from Australia so I think it’s okay for him to say that… They definitely have completely different words for things, but nothing I hadn’t heard before. Did you pick up any words and phrases while there? I picked up “lifts” as opposed to “elevators,” and “bin” instead of “trash can.” What tips do you have for fellow travelers making their way to Sydney? Bring comfortable shoes. You’ll walk a lot both on the tours and just going out and exploring. Also, bring your camera. It’s beautiful and whether you like architecture, landscape, or floral photography. There is something for everyone! Would you consider this trip life-changing and if so, what did you learn from this trip? Yes. I learned that I would love to live in Australia. I love the culture and seeing small businesses thrive. There are small, unique businesses everywhere with people actually shopping inside them! In the States it’s all about big business and seeing small, successful businesses in the States, I feel, is pretty rare these days. What were the benefits of booking your trip through Kadena ITT? They made it so easy! I get nervous traveling in strange cities and ITT had a shuttle to and from the airport, with maps, a list of must do activities and they also planned the city and Blue Mountain tours. We got to see and experience a lot more of the city and culture because of them. Now that you’ve been to Australia, what’s next on your travel bucket list? I have yet to travel around mainland, so that’s definitely next. Also, I would love to do Beijing and the Great Wall.

Want to book your next big adventure with Kadena ITT? Spring Break International Tours Tokyo • 9 - 13 April Kyoto • 10 - 14 April Sydney • 9 - 16 April China • 9 - 16 April

Has international travel changed your outlook on life? Absolutely. As I said before I feel so lucky to be where I am, and to have been where I’ve been. I always think a lot about where I grew up when I travel, because like I said, not many people in my home town will get to experience the things I have. I want to take advantage of everything I can while I’m here, and I am doing my best to not wait until the last minute to cram everything in. I know that some people have a hard time living away from home, but I hope that others are able to appreciate and take advantage of the opportunities we have living here. All I want to do is travel, and there’s so much more to see! What are you waiting for?

Where I come from, living in Japan and traveling to Australia simply does not happen often, so I love the warm feeling I get when I realize how lucky I am to be where I’m standing. family

Each new base presents its own laundry list of challenges, opportunities, surprises and questions. Amidst the chaos of a PCS sometimes it seems there is no time to actually get to know a new place. And once there is time, it’s hard to know where to start…especially when you’re living overseas and are brand new to the military. There are new things around every corner (literally) and when you can’t understand the local language or the language of acronyms your spouse speaks at home, military life can seem extremely daunting. It seems that there is a never-ending struggle to make a new place feel like home with normal routines, comforts and activities. To survive, we spouses learn to be extremely independent people, however, nothing can replace a helping hand. Thankfully for Air Force spouses, the Airman & Family Readiness Center provides that helping hand. Heart Link, a unique program geared toward both new Air Force spouses and those who are already well versed in the ways of the military, imparts knowledge, expertise and comfort to those who are seeking an extra bit of help.

30 WWW.KADENAFSS.COM

What is Heart Link? It is an Air Force Spouse 101 crash course geared toward new Air Force spouses (five years or less), but all spouses are welcome. The program goals are to increase spouse awareness of the Air Force mission, customs, traditions, protocols, and available resources and services, enable spouses to capitalize on the availability of both on and off base community resources, help spouses acclimate and feel they are an important part of the Air Force community. Heart Link also encourages families to be physically, emotionally, and spiritually healthy. What can you expect from attending the orientation? You can expect more awareness of Air Force structure, which leads to a better understanding of the military culture. You will learn how to decode the military lingo (hear any acronyms lately?!) and better understand the Air Force family. What benefits of Heart Link are there for spouses that are new to Air Force life? Heart Link provides education on community involvement and provides an environment for spouses to connect and network with other spouses who may also be new to the community. Heart Link can also help bridge the gap between spouses from all walks by creating an environment where they may not otherwise have crossed paths. What benefits of heart link are there for spouses that are not new to military life but are new to Kadena Air Base? Spouses will learn about unique resources available on Okinawa that are not available stateside. Being stationed overseas is an exciting adventure for most, but also comes with some challenges. Challenges may include not having access to common resources that you are used to back in the states. Heart Link will bridge that gap by providing local area and base specific information while helping spouses locate and utilize the resources that are available. When coming from a Stateside assignment, it can be difficult adjusting to and navigating life overseas. Heart Link helps ease the growing pains not only for their spouses, but also for their families by empowering and educating spouses. What are some highlights of the orientation? Spouses are provided with a list of useful websites and Facebook pages specific to Okinawa. Heart Link provides tools needed to give spouses a starting point. The Wing Commander, or whomever is the designated Distinguished Visitor that day, coins each Heart Link participant at the end of the orientation, carrying on a tradition that has been around since World War I. What are some common questions spouses usually ask? Many spouses want to know their options for employment while on Okinawa and we always refer them to USAJobs and NAFJobs. We also provide them with information about additional classes we provide on how to properly navigate these websites and how to apply for government jobs as well as how to tailor resumes to fit. Other common questions revolve around what there is to do while on island. We have a plethora of resources, especially within the 18th Force Support Squadron and multiple Facebook pages and websites that can assist in trip, activity and day planning. Though Okinawa is small, there is never a shortage of things to do and places to see.

VENTURE 31

family

In short, Heart Link is an excellent resource for Air Force spouses of all backgrounds, knowledge levels and experience. It is a program that provides new information to even the most seasoned MilSpouse and can comfort those new to the Air Force life with a bit of informational light at the end of the tunnel! The next Heart Link will be held on Wednesday, 4 May at the Kadena Officers’ Club. Register at the Kadena Airman & Family Readiness Center by Wednesday, 27 April. For all Heart Link dates as well as other classes, trips and programs open to all branches of service, visit Kadenafss.com/life-career/a-frc. Not an Air Force spouse, but still interested in programs similar to Heart Link? Each branch has their own spouse service that helps new spouses learn about the military lifestyle and connect with others in similar life stages. Contact your Army, Navy or Marine MWR for more information about a spouse orientation specific to your active duty spouse’s branch of service.

I WRITTEN BY: RUBEN ZALDAÑA, MARKETING OPERATIONS

successfully avoided Reuben sandwiches for most of my life. It’s not that the sandwich’s ingredients or even that the distinctive aroma particularly put me off. The real reason for my anti Reuben campaign is that 30 years ago my parents decided to name me Ruben. I don’t exactly remember, but I am fairly certain that minutes after leaving the hospital the first Ruben-Reuben joke was made at my expense. I understand that small talk might be an awkward dance in which we all must engage, and a clever joke might seem like a great idea for an icebreaker, but the play on words seemed to lose their humor right around the 1,001st go around. Again my memory fails me, but I am pretty sure I hit that number around the same time I turned three. By the time I was in my teens I simply responded with a wellpracticed eye roll and a sarcastic sigh. At 18 I moved to New York City to attend college and something I can only describe as magical happened. I went to my first New York deli and finally ordered my first Reuben sandwich. It was a masterpiece...a life changing experience. Perfectly cut not too thick or too thin, warm savory corned beef, with melted Swiss

cheese, and topped with fresh, crisp sauerkraut and a tangy Russian dressing. The contents of the sandwich were lovingly held between the two most perfect slices of freshly baked marbled Rye bread. I found the combination of ingredients to be flavor nirvana for my palette, and my love affair with the Reuben began with a single bite. As amazing as the food is in Okinawa I have still missed New York City delis. When I found out that the Kadena Officers’ Club was planning Reubenfest, I did a little jig of joy and marked it on my calendar and started to day dream about the Ruben-Reuben reunion.

Reubenfest Saturday, 5 March • 5 pm - 8 pm $50 • Per person ($3 member discount)

The Kadena Officers’ Club first ever salute to the Reuben sandwich! The all-American hot sandwich of corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and Russian or Thousand Island dressing, grilled between slices of rye bread is always a crowd pleaser. Reubenfest will feature a delectable buffet of Reuben inspired fare. It will be a night of Reuben pizzas, spicy Reuburritos, Reuben eggrolls, a kimchi Reuben variant and even a Reuben calzone made with fresh Rye dough. Reubenfest will include live entertainment and bottomless draft beer to complement the delicious Reuben treats. Tickets will be available starting Monday, 1 February, and if you show up early you will find me standing first in line.
