I

n my spare time I enjoy practicing the ancient art of kareeh-oh-kay, or Karaoke for the common folk. My audience consists of my husband and dog, the only ones actually brave enough to hear me stretch my vocal chords to new heights. I’m no Adele and I’m aware of that but Karaoke is truly for amateurs. And if you don’t know what the actual definition of amateur is, let me help you… Most people think of amateur in a negative way like, “Whoa, what an amateur. Get it together.” But its origins rest in France and, to put it simply, it means, “for the love of.” So, when I say that Karaoke is for amateurs what I mean is that the first people who sang Karaoke didn’t do it because they were attempting to become the next big pop star, they did it because they needed to relax after a long day of work. That being said, the first Karaoke singers were mainly businessmen looking to let off some steam. Legend has it that a snack bar in Kobe City, Japan is the birth place of Karaoke. When the usual guitarist could not perform due to illness, or for whatever reason, the owner of the bar prepared tapes that were just background music and patrons took their turns singing over the music. While the actual history is very muddled, what we do know is that the first Karaoke box, a roadside facility containing closed-door, insulated rooms for singing, appeared in 1984 in Okayama Prefecture, just west of the trend setting area known as Kansai. Now Karaoke boxes can be found on almost any street corner in Japan. Karaoke made its way over to America in a slightly different fashion, a television show. In the 60s the show Sing Along with Mitch aired lyrics on the bottom of the screen while Mitch Miller, one of the most influential people in popular music during the 50s and 60s, and a chorus sang. Not quite Karaoke, right? Right. Americans didn’t fully embrace the power of Karaoke like the Japanese did and that’s okay because we’re all here on an island just south of mainland Japan and we have the chance to embrace all the awesomeness that Karaoke has to offer. Enough with the history lesson… Here are some tips on proper Karaoke etiquette: 1. Don’t expect greatness. 2. Don’t hog the mic. 3. Pick songs that people know. (So that you don’t have one of those, “wow, this crowded room sure does feel lonely” moments.) 4. If you pick a song that’s a duet, both parties must stick it out. No man left behind! 5. Always, always applaud. People really put themselves out there and they deserve some praise!

At the Ocean’s Edge Photos by • Nagi Marie Quirk | Written by • Arielle Sullivan

T

he ocean is a big part of who I am. Growing up in a small fishing town, most people relied on the ocean to take care of their families. Our local beaches were a place to run into neighbors. Seasons weren’t measured in temperatures, but by the seafood you could catch during that time of year. From the flat, idyllic sea conditions of the summer months to the fickle winds of winter, the ocean was the variable that dictated whether or not my father worked that day. I have a very vivid memory from third grade of my father showing up to school, barefoot and windblown, to pull us out of class for the rest of the day. He was going night diving and we were too young to stay home alone. The ocean called and we had no option; it was springtime and that meant many late nights on the boat, doing homework by dive light and falling asleep under itchy wool blankets. When I was very young, my parents would take me on boat rides to encourage sleep; I drove boats before I could drive a car and had a pet stingray with a five-foot wingspan named Birdie. In my early twenties I moved to the mountains and I found myself searching for waterfalls, lakes and rivers in my spare time. I would spend many hours and countless miles on trails for a promise of water at the end. The trek to the coast was time consuming, and yet I found myself heading east as often as possible. Though I am drawn to water of any sort, my heart lives at the ocean’s edge. I am not unique in romanticizing the ocean. For many,

Santiago and his impossibly large marlin and Captain Ahab and the white whale are much more than characters in a book; they are the thread that weaves fabric of childhood dreams. People of all ages have been taking literary adventures on the high seas since Homer wrote The Odyssey in 8th Century BC. Since that time, artists, musicians and authors have been portraying the ocean as an intoxicating place to get lost in thought, to fight epic battles and to fall in love. Considering our biological make up, it comes as no surprise that many people find such comfort in water. When we are born, our bodies are over 75 percent water and our brains continue to be 80 percent water throughout our entire lives. It is reasonable to assume, considering our aqueous makeup that the comfort we find in our oceans, lakes and rivers comes from within. In fact, studies show that people find an increase in positive mindset and significantly prefer looking at photos that include water as opposed to those without. Our very existence is dependent upon water. From clean drinking water to the food we eat, water is in part responsible for Earth’s unique ability to sustain life in all forms. The draw of the ocean is more than flowery language and exciting tales at sea. Research sheds light on the many reasons so many people feel connected to water. In terms of evolution, hunter and gatherer societies were always VENTURE 23

recreation

searching for water sources, typically never straying farther than a reasonable distance from them. Coastal societies found shelter on the edge of the ocean where natural food sources were constant and plentiful. As seasons change, land-based resources become less readily available, but ancient cultures were still able to fish year round; the natural tide of the ocean provided a constant replenishment of resources, reducing the need to travel miles on land to forage. Neuroscientist Michael Crawford also credits the move from forests to coastal areas as a major reason why our brains are so large and complex; a diet high in seafood, and therefore high in omega-3 fatty acids, supports neural growth and development. As humans continued to evolve, electing to remain close to water and eat significant amounts of seafood, the human brain continued to develop. The ongoing change that occurs to our brains throughout our lives, also known as neuroplasticity, resulted in a species that feels a very close connection with the water. It stems from a desire to survive, and has since developed into a deep emotional attachment. Author and researcher Wallace Nichols calls the feeling many people experience when near the ocean, Blue Mind. He describes Blue Mind as, “a mildly meditative state characterized by calm, peacefulness, unity and a sense of general happiness and satisfaction with life in the moment. It is inspired by water and elements associated with water, from the color blue to the words we use to describe the sensations associated with immersion.” I understand Blue Mind with my whole being. I feel closer to my family, to my roots and to my home when I am near the ocean. As a person who grew up exploring below the surface, eating seafood most days of the week and spending almost every birthday at the beach, it makes perfect sense to me that our natural attraction to water stems from our ancient ancestors. It is bigger than the collective ‘us.’ It is deeper than where we are born or are currently living. Water, more than most other resources, creates a shared human experience. It comes as no surprise that as many as 500,000 people become SCUBA certified in the United States every year. Though our Earth is more than 70 percent ocean, less than five percent has been explored. Venturing into the inky, unknown depths can be at once exhilarating and relaxing. Shipwrecks, underwater planes and other submerged objects create artificial habitats, attracting exciting sea creatures and, in turn, divers. Though some people experiment with deeper and deeper dives, the vast majority of divers explore less ominous, colorful coral reefs that make up popular dive locations. Taking up less than one percent of the ocean’s surface, coral reefs provide shelter to 25 percent of all marine animals. Some of the most diverse ecosystems in the world, coral reefs have become known as, “Rainforests of the Sea.” Diving offers us the unique opportunity to experience the exotic, and sometimes rare, species that inhabit coral reefs. 24 WWW.KADENAFSS.COM

In a place like Okinawa, diving is a yearround sport. The cooler water of winter can easily be combatted with thicker wet suits and helps in alleviating the congestion at some of the more popular dive sites. Though the visibility off the coast is high year round, this time of year offers even higher visibility. During the summer, the water is more temperate and can make shallow dives even more enjoyable. Shoulder seasons offer a refreshing transitional time when the water is fairly comfortable and the visibility is still favorable. Okinawa’s location makes for some unique diving experiences that you may be less likely to have elsewhere. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can head to Yonaguni Island, the western-most point of Japan, and explore what some believe are the underwater remains of a lost civilization. The end of fall through spring is an exciting time to visit Yonaguni with the opportunity to dive with schools of hammerhead sharks. Hammerhead sharks are not considered dangerous to humans, though practicing caution is standard when encountering any unfamiliar creature. Known for being relatively shy around humans, hammerheads hunt at the bottom of the ocean at nighttime and have smaller mouths than most other shark species. A bit closer to home, the Kerama Islands are home to some of the most spectacular dive sites in the world. Teeming with colorful coral, tropical fish, sting rays, sea turtles, eels and more, the reefs in the Kerama Islands are a must-see. Zamami Island is a spawning ground for sea turtles. Green, Loggerhead and Hawksbill turtles all lay eggs on the beaches of Zamami Island in the spring and summer. Most female sea turtles return to the same beach each year to nest so divers often spot at least one of these graceful creatures. If you’re looking for something different, underwater cave diving can be an exciting way to add some variety to your trip. Diving can quickly become more than a weekend hobby. When diving becomes your passion, it is easy to imagine it as a more permanent part of your everyday life. Turning a recreational diving habit into a successful career can be a very rewarding decision. The options for professional diving careers are as varied as the ocean itself. Whether you’re looking for a fun new way to spend your downtime or looking to transition into a new career, exploring the underwater

world with the Kadena Marina can help you reach your professional and recreational diving goals. From Dive Masters overseeing dive trips and helping with assistant instructor trainings to weekend warriors looking for an underwater adventure, the dive professionals at the Kadena Marina can guide you safely and effectively though all your required certifications.

family in FSS, maybe you’ve heard about it, where we do our best to make your life better, easier and a bit more fun. And, here on Okinawa, you’ve basically hit the historical, tropical, beach jackpot. We want you to take full advantage of this and that means occasionally playing tour guide… Or, if you’d prefer, we do have professional tour guides for some trips around the island if your history prowess isn’t quite up to par. Oh, and the answer is yes, you can take your visitors on many excursions FSS offers even if they’re not DoD card holders.

Nakagusuku Castle Ruins

It's happening isn't it? You can almost feel the loud, pounding of their feet on the ground in rhythm with your now fast beating heart. The moment you push the red, end button on your Facetime call, your mind starts racing with the ‘what ifs,’ ‘what will we dos’ and ‘but, how will theys.’ Your palms are sweaty and your fingers race over the keyboard as you begin your new research project; your deadline an arrival date. Have you ever seen “The Man Who Came to Dinner?” It’s a movie from the 30s about a travelling lecturer who falls on some icy steps and then is adamant that he recovers in the home at which his fall took place. Long story short, he is an unbearable, incorrigible houseguest. The film was, quite obviously, a comedy in which he drives everyone crazy with his bossiness and conniving nature. Toward the end of the film (spoiler alert!), his hosts find out that he has been faking his injuries for some time and kick him to the curb… Only for him to fall, once again, on the ice-covered steps requiring another recuperation stint with his [less than thrilled] care givers. Now, hopefully you don’t feel quite like the characters of this film did and are, dare I say, looking forward to a visit from friends or family. In all fairness, it can be a daunting task to plan out two weeks of activities for people who may or may not share the same interests in food, recreation or even life in general but I promise you, with a bit of help, this too shall pass. We do this thing here 34 WWW.KADENAFSS.COM

Kadena ITT takes tours to many of the castle ruins on Okinawa including the Nakagusuku Castle ruins. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1972 and with good reason. It is one of the oldest, most well preserved castle ruins on the island. It was home to many rulers and functioned with multiple purposes; it has served Okinawa as a royal dwelling as well as a primary school and a village office. Nakagusuku Castle is still a sight to behold even after hundreds of years of typhoons, multiple wars and many repurposings. The gardens have a wild beauty about them even though they’re not quite as manicured as an imperial garden might have once been; their perennial spirit proving that Okinawa is as resilient as it is beautiful.

Shuri Castle

Shuri Castle is unique. It’s a reconstruction of what was. The original structure was almost completely destroyed during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945 and as it stands now, the castle was rebuilt based on photos, memories and historical record. It is the most accurate depiction of a Ryukyuan castle that we have here on Okinawa and just like Nakagusuku Castle, Shuri Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors can tour the multi-level Shuri castle or just enjoy a walk around the beautiful grounds. Inside you’ll find lavish colors

and paintings as well as a throne fit for a king; there’s beauty in the juxtaposition of old and new as modern society encroaches upon Shuri’s walls.

Peace Prayer Memorial Park

Peace Prayer Memorial Park is one of those places that, I think, everyone should visit while they’re on Okinawa. As are all war memorials, the park is a sobering place. There are multiple memorials for those involved in WWII each with seemingly endless lists of names of people who gave their lives for something much bigger than they. The museum, full of history, provides a brief look into what life was like on Okinawa during the war. Visitors can read first hand accounts from survivors that seem to transcend time, their fear still palpable even as words on a page. It’s a place that puts into perspective the amount of loss and pain this island and its people have endured, another testament to the resiliency of this tiny island.

Churaumi Aquarium

underwater observatory that gives you a peek into the day in the life of a fish. It’s one thing to see these creatures in an aquarium but it’s a completely different thing to see them out in the real world doing real fish things. Both the glass bottom boat and underwater observatory came highly recommended and I’m glad they were. It’s another simple reminder that we live on a tropical island where there are opportunities to do things that are not available everywhere else.

Cape Manzamo

This is another popular spot for both local and foreign tourists alike. Situated just outside Onna Village, Cape Manzamo offers spectacular sunset views. The literal translation of its name is ‘a field for 10,000 people to sit’ and after you’ve been to Cape Manzamo, that makes sense. It’s said that Cape Manzamo received its name in the 18th century during from the Ryukyuan King Sho Kei. Can’t you just imagine thousands of people sitting, enjoying a beautiful, Okinawan sunset over the East China Sea? It is also distinct due to it’s unique, almost handle-like form that looks as though long ago someone tried to pull the rocks from where they stood instead leaving behind a hole in the massive stone. These are only a few of the opportunities available through Kadena FSS and they’d all be fantastic additions to a visitor’s itinerary. They’re locations that you can visit time and time again, noticing and learning new things with each trip. Okinawa is rich in history and culture and it’s important we share that with friends and family to give them a better understanding of this amazing island.

If you’ve never seen a whale shark in the flesh, then you really ought to. These creatures are quite magnificent as they glide through the water beside manta and sting rays, sharks and various fish. The Churaumi Aquarium is home to a few of these beauties and with each visit, they remain as unbelievable as ever. The aquarium also houses a plethora of other marine life such as five different species of turtles, what seems like millions of types of fish as well as dolphins and manatees. It’s a full day excursion as the Churaumi Aquarium is part of Expo Park which includes a tropical and subtropical arboretum, Emerald Beach, a tropical green house and an oceanic cultural museum.

Busena Point

Also another full day trip, Busena Point offers trip goers a chance to see fish in their wild habitat with both a glass bottom boat tour as well as an VENTURE 35
