O

kinawa. A beautiful island, nestled in the heart of the Pacific Ocean, rich in culture that can be found no where else in the world. Okinawa is a land filled with castles and deep-rooted history. It is a land inhabited by a people who are kind and resilient despite having weathered war and conflict. It is a land filled with customs and respect. Out of Okinawa’s history are born many beautiful traditions still practiced today, one of which is Eisa dancing. Passed down through generations, these prayer dances are at the heart of festivals and events throughout the world.

The history of Eisa is shrouded in mystery. The story most widely believed is that of the Buddhist priest, Taichu Jojin. While on his way to China from Kyoto, it is said that he introduced the native people of modern day Okinawa to Buddhism. To help the people remember complicated Buddhist prayers, dances were created from which Eisa is thought to have originated. With a history as deep as our beloved Okinawa, it’s difficult for historians to agree on the exact origins of Eisa. However, witnessing these complex performances leaves you with the profound knowledge that this is an important tradition not soon to be forgotten. The Obon Festival in mid-July is when anscestral spirits visit the mortal world. Families prepare food, flowers and light lanterns as offerings to these spirits; many also visit their anscestors’ graves to to call them home. The third and final day of Obon is Ukui, or Seeing Off Day. On Ukui, communities gather together in the streets beating drums and performing Eisa to traditional music in honor of their anscestors’ return to the afterlife. As time passed, each community developed their own unique style of Eisa. Modern Eisa now offers complex choreography and intricate costumes alongside the traditional sounds of folk music, drumming and singing. The Atsuta Young Men’s Association, or Atsuta Sei Nen No Kai, from the Kitanakagusuku Village dates back 60 years.

12 WWW.KADENAFSS.COM

Wearing purple headscarves and beautiful vests of blue, white and yellow they are known for their extraordinary jumps throughout their performance. Consisting of community members ages 16 - 25, they practice rigorously from June through August with a day of rest on Sundays. With sweltering Okinawan summers on the horizon, evenings offer a small reprieve from the heat. As day turns to night, this musical heartbeat begins to surface and the transcendent melody of Eisa awakens local communities. The sound of the drum can be felt all throughout your body; the reverberations originating in your heart, spreading like a wild fire. Observers become participants as the intensity of the dance draws in your very soul. The beating drum, the stick twirling through the air, and the complex footwork of each drummer is dizzying. There is, however, a sense of ease and obvious respect and pride each performer has for their community and culture. Should someone drop their stick or lose their place in the dance, they gracefully fall back into place as if that miscalculation was intentional. The performances are complex with a large number of individuals, many of whom are performing different instruments and dances. There are three different types of drums: the ufudeeku, a large barrel shaped drum, the paaranku, a small hand drum with one head, and the shimedeeku, a medium sized hand drum with lacing around the edge. Additionally, you will see hata-gashira holding signs indicating the name of the Eisa group and the community they represent, tii-udui, rhythmic dancers as well as jikata and jiutee, musicians and singers. The complexity and grace of the performances are a testament to the amount of time each group spends practicing and perfecting their Eisa dances. Just as the performances themselves have changed, so has the tradition. These dances are not only performed during Obon but are now taking place during many festivals and competitions throughout Japan and the rest of the world. One of the largest festivals is held here on Okinawa. The 10,000 Eisa Dancers Festival takes place annually on the first Sunday of August on Kokusai Street in Naha and showcases both Okinawan as well as visiting Eisa dancers. The breathtaking performance is not one to be missed. Firmly rooted in traditions, the diversity of so many Eisa dancers in one place is sure to be an experience that will stay with you throughout your life.

10,000 Eisa Dancers Festival on Kokusai Street Sunday, 7 August • 1 pm - 7 pm Have you ever seen an Eisa dancer? Whether the answer is yes or no, you have certainly never seen so many in one place. Join us for an exciting day on Kokusai Street to see 10,000 traditional Eisa dancers in action! Make this once a year event one you and your family will always remember! BEYOND BOREDOM Written by • Kellie Anthony

18 WWW.KADENAFSS.COM

“I’m bored,”

I say to my husband for the umpteenth time. “What do you want to do this weekend?” is a question I’ve heard a thousand times and asked a thousand times, usually muttered from the confines of the couch on Saturday mornings. The answer is never definite. It’s always “I don’t know. What do you want to do?” Rinse. Repeat...the weekend cycle of our lives. Even though we could take a short drive and explore a new place, we don’t always do that. That’s not how I operate as a person. I need a game plan, a strategy - some sort of outline of an idea for our day. Honestly, that alone can be a lot of work - especially when you’re unfamiliar with the area. That was my excuse for the first few months here. I always had plenty of excuses. Whether there were chores to be done or I smiply felt that I didn’t have enough time to do the research, something always took priority. There was always something. We’re creatures of habit. We go to work. We come home. We eat dinner. We go to bed. On the weekends our routine gets thrown off. We opted for TV and down time rather than researching our next Okinawan excursion. After a while, we began to see people who moved here after us, people who work just as much as we do, exploring and learning things about Okinawa that we should’ve already known. But to our own fault, we didn’t. This was our wake up call. What’s the point of living abroad if you stay inside the lines of the base you’re stationed on? Now that we know more about Okinawa, we’re learning that this island offers a lot more than our favorite TV streaming app does. We’ve started to avoid falling into the comfort trap that is our big, leather couch. It’s not always easy, but somehow, even when chores are piling up and I haven’t relaxed in days, I still feel like a weekend climbing trails or watching whales is far more relaxing than sitting on the couch. And by more relaxing I mean a weekend spent climbing trails or watching whales feels more productive than putting off chores by staring at our television. So, we’ve started doing what every American who is blessed with the opportunity to live abroad should do - we explore. We go beyond boredom.

We drop the remote and we pick up our sun block. We take in as much of this country, and everything it offers, as we can. Sometimes we even break my own rule of always having a plan. Some days we just pick a beach and we drive there. We did that recently with a group of friends. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t too excited about that at first. We just drove and didn’t know if we’d even be allowed to do anything there. But you know what? I loved it. It was the first time I paddle boarded. It was the first time I’d grilled on the beach. And it was one of the greatest days of my life. On the not so spontaneous days, we flip through Venture Magazine, see what trips are available and we make that our daytrip. We’ve been snorkeling and river trekking. We’ve been to Ryukyu Village and Churaumi Aquarium. We’ve blown glass at the Ryukyu Glass Factory and we’re currently getting SCUBA certified. Our weekends are no longer filled with three seasons of a show that ended years ago. It’s amazing and so refreshing. If you’re like us and you want to break your mold of weekend couch surfing, but you’re unsure of where to start (like we were), I’d recommend Outdoor Recreation. They take the stress of planning trips over for you. The staff has been a huge source of information for me. They’re professionals who will take you on some of the most amazing trips you’ll get to experience here in Okinawa. They offer stand up paddle boarding, kayaking and snorkeling trips. They’ll take you exploring through the jungles of Okinawa. They’ll even take you off island for some of the best hiking, snorkeling and diving of your life. Each month Outdoor Recreation offers a wide variety of adventures and trips. Whether you’re interested in trekking through the jungle or snorkeling above some of the prettiest coral reef in the world, they can guide you along the way. The things I’ve mentioned are just a small fraction of what you can do and you’re not just limited to weekend exploration. They offer weekday trips as well. To find out about all of the activities they offer, stop by Outdoor Recreation or visit kadenafss.com for their monthly calendar. Their event registration opens 30 days prior for day trips and 60 days prior for off-island tours. Boredom doesn’t have to be your norm. Adventure is out there and Outdoor Recreation is more than happy to be your guide. What are you waiting for?

There’s so much to see and so much to do at the Kadena Base Library! The library is a place to learn, read and have fun...a place the whole family can enjoy. In fact, more than 82 million children attend local library programs every year. Studies show that children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime learning. The amount of time children spend reading outside of school is linked to gains in reading achievement. We have lots of books to get you started on your Path of Glory with no worries of suffering the Agony of Defeat! Readers are winners! Here are a few recommendations:

Olympics by Chris Oxlade Discover the ultimate sporting event that brings together the world’s finest athletes with a spirit of peace and internationalism. Sumo by P.L. Cuyler Read all about the history of Sumo from prehistoric times to modern wrestlers. This book includes charts and a map of the organization and techniques of modern sumo that will add greatly to your knowledge of the famous sport. The Big Book of Cycling for Beginners by Tori Bortman Find out how to select a bicycle that best fits you and your specific needs, how to outfit yourself with the appropriate gear and equipment, basic riding and etiquette skills, including how to navigate traffic and how to properly fuel and hydrate yourself for optimal performance.

Martial Arts by Michael Finn This book includes a wealth of historical and contemporary illustration from all over the world. It chronicles the development of the fighting arts of the East from their mysterious beginnings in ancient India, China and Japan. Martial Arts also covers its enthusiastic adoption in the West as a sport, as a means of self-defense, and as a moral philosophy. Running for Dummies by Florence Joyner This book will help you assess your goals and develop a running routine for fun, fitness or competition. It will assist you in focusing on your form with expert tips and techniques and will help you eat right and replenish your body after running as well as how to avoid injuries and stay in shape with simple strength training exercises. The House That Ruth Built by Robert Weintraub The author has resurrected the 1923 baseball season to show us how he changed baseball that year and and every season since. The research is meticulous and the writing is delightful.

Adopted dog, Kimi

36 WWW.KADENAFSS.COM

She’s my dog. She’s easily the furriest member of our family. She’s got energy for days and she’s the smartest little creature on four legs I’ve ever met. Hers is the first life, aside from my own, for which I was truly responsible. She depends on me for everything. For the basics like food, water and a roof over her head, and for the not so basics like the ever growing amount of toys and antlers cluttering my floors. She belongs to me and, in a way, I belong to her. I am her human. Last fall, we added to our pack with an eight-week old stray. In all honesty, the plan was not necessarily to keep this dog. We wanted to foster her. We would take care of all the necessary vet visits to get her vaccinated and spayed and even give her some basic training. We felt that we were a one-dog family (there’s no shame in that!) but we wanted to help make this little pup’s life better than what it was. As cliché as it may sound, she was the one who made our lives better, more complete. The thought of not having her as a part of our family did not work for us. But that’s the thing about pets. They weave an inescapable web of cuteness and build a relationship with you based on snuggles and nose nudges. And one fact never changes: they will love you. They will love you without conditions. They will love you after your worst, longest day at work. They will love you on a lazy Saturday morning. They will love you and ask for nothing in return. Okay, if they’re anything like my dogs, they’ll probably ask for food…but you know what I mean. Getting your first pet as an adult is a big step to take. You are taking on a responsibility and commitment that will inevitably supersede many of your other priorities. But it’s a responsibility that brings with it so much in return. So much can be learned from our four legged companions – accountability and compassion to say the least. Animals teach us to appreciate a sense of humor even if that means having a sense of humor that involves being able to laugh at our own mistakes and shortcomings. We know that animals are good for us in the subjective sense. They’re cute and hilarious. Anyone who has a dog knows that they’re some of the most unabashedly funny beings to ever walk the planet. Think we can learn something from them here, too? Dogs. Don’t. Care. But did you know that, objectively and scientifically speaking, dogs are good for our health? Having a pet can actually lower triglyceride and cholesterol levels as well as lower stress levels. That’s a happy heart and a happy mind. Endorphins are another contributing factor to a happy mind. And guess what? Petting animals releases endorphins. So go on, let that pup on the couch for some snuggles. The happiness from endorphins will more than make up for the fact that your furniture now has a new coat. A home with pets also has fewer allergy issues and stronger immune systems. Now, could this be because those corn-chip scented paws bring in their fair share of germs from the outside or because if kiddos grow up with pet dander they’re less likely to have allergies to it? Yes, I’m sure that’s exactly what it is. Either way, it would seem that having a stronger immune system is a small price to pay to also have a furry member of the family. It’s safe to say I’m a bit crazy for my pups. I grew up on a small farm so having animals has always been my norm. The years I spent living away from home through college, getting my first real job and apartment without animals were a bit strange. That’s not the case for everyone, though, and thinking of adopting a pet can be seriously daunting. It’s not a decision to be taken lightly, but if you are at a place where you’d like to add to your family, the Karing Kennels Adoption Facility will play your match maker. It’s so beautiful to see doggies and kitties find their forever homes. I promise they’ll love you. I promise you’ll make their lives better. But even more, I promise they’ll make your life better.
