Y
ou know the phenomenon all too well. Island time is quite literally the original tale as old as time. Why are the speed limits so slow? Island time. Why can you leave your house on time and still be late to your destination? Island time. Why does nothing open before 9 am? Yep, you guessed it. Island time, man. The majority of us live here, on an island, because of our job or our spouse’s job. That doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy the beautiful side of island time, though. Okinawa, and its neighboring islands, offers a plethora of beaches. Beaches perfect for relaxing, beaches perfect for a day with the kids and even beaches that are a photographer’s dream come true. It’s so easy to let the day to day schedules and stresses get the best of us and before we know it, we’ve missed out on island time. The beauty of Okinawa’s beaches speaks for itself, but we are here to make sure you know just how beautiful island time can be. This June, take a day trip to near by islands or beaches. Each island offers a unique, beautiful experience along with the chance to relax and truly enjoy island time.
Minna Island
Saturday, 4 June • 7:30 am - 7:30 pm While Minna Island is only a short ferry ride away, it feels like you’ve been transported to a faraway, majestic place. The teal water and white sands are exactly what comes to mind when we think of island time. You can spend your time relaxing on the beach reading your favorite book and meeting your daily Vitamin D quota, or get in the water and take a banana boat ride. Almost every path leads to a reasonably priced restaurant which is, quite honestly, the perfect kind of path to take.
Zamami Island
Sunday, 19 June • 7:30 am - 7:30 pm Zamami is part of the Kerama Islands. It’s a popular place to snorkel, dive and explore. Kadena ITT will take you on a short tour of the island before releasing you to take in Zamami Island on your own. Though the ferries don’t allow cars, anyone with a SOFA license can rent a scooter and tour the island that way. Zamami isn’t exactly Ibiza... Which is a good thing, right? There aren’t a lot of nightlife offerings, but it’s the perfect place for a nearby island getaway to wind down, and remember to slow down. Zamami provides a reminder of how beautiful island time is.
Azama Sun Sun Beach
Tuesday, 28 June • 10 am - 3 pm Azama Sun Sun Beach is perfect for those who prefer not to brave the ocean on a quick ferry ride to reach their destination. The water is clear, the sand is white and it’s close to home. It’s paradise and it’s perfect. There are plenty of picnic areas and a small shop that offers refreshments and beach gear. Spend the day with the kids enjoying the water, bring a picnic or take a book and enjoy a quiet beach day. Azama Sun Sun Beach is located in Nanjo City.
Tsuken Ialand
Tsuken Island is another good snorkel spot. If you don’t feel like snorkeling, there are tons of other water activities to choose from. The island has a lot to offer in the water sports department. Of course, if you feel the need to explore off the beach, head out on the open road. Just make sure you take your time to really breathe in the air and and take in the view. Oh, and if you should stumble upon a structure that bears an odd resemblance to a carrot, climb the steps and take in the amazing view. Contact Kadena ITT for details on their July excursion to Tsuken Island.
Emerald Beach
Emerald Beach is located near Nago and is host to fireworks every summer. Spend the morning at the Churaumi Aquarium and the afternoon at Emerald Beach! Enjoy a view of Ie Island and the East China Sea. KADENA INFORMATION, TICKETS & TRAVEL • 966-7333

Sesoko Island
Sesoko Island is north of Nago, connected to Okinawa by a bridge. Kadena Outdoor Recreation offers snorkeling and kayaking trips to Sesoko Island during the summers. What better way to spend a day than catching a glimpse into the underwater world and then drying off on a beautiful beach? There are many opportunities to snorkel in Okinawa, but none are quite like the Blue Cave. It is aptly named as the water is strikingly blue. You can see hundreds of tropical fish in colors you didn’t even know existed. OUTDOOR RECREATION • 966-7343
Okuma Beach
Okuma Beach is the real deal when it comes to beach getaways. Not only does Okuma Beach offer lodging so you can extend your weekend away, but also an extensive list of outdoor and water activities. If you prefer to stay out of the water, take a glass bottom boat tour and get a bird’s eye view of the tropical ocean life off Okuma’s shores. Snorkel excursions, banana boat rides, stand up paddle boarding and ski boating are just a few of the exciting activities at Okuma Beach. You can get your adrenaline going or not - there is truly something for everyone at Okuma Beach. And they’ve got pretty great pizza, too! OKUMA BEACH • 634-1991
Kadena Marina
The Kadena Marina is amazingly close and amazingly beautiful. From the Marina, you can take power boat, jet ski and sea kayaking classes and obtain your dive certification from one of their Divemasters. They’ve got paddle boards, kayaks and snorkel gear for rent to go along with their beautiful sunset view of the East China Sea. Spend the day on the water or on the beach and cap it off with dinner at Seaside Ristorante.

OKINAWA
The possibilities are endless and there’s no excuse not to get out and enjoy Okinawan Island Time. Soon enough, you’ll be a convert waiting to indoctrinate others into what it means to live on island time. Yeah, we can’t always abide by it, but we can try our best on weekends and holidays. What good is it to live on an island if we don’t come back from it a little more relaxed?

A
merica… The name quickly, for most, turns into images rather than just letters on a page. It evokes emotions, memories, sights, sounds and smells – the ultimate definition of home for so many of us. After living overseas for an extended period of time, something happens. This place which will always be home turns into a vacation destination of sorts, throwing our lives into this bizarre time/space continuum that only allows for brief stints spent together at home with our families and friends. This feeling, though, is by no means uncharted territory. From the beginning of time, people have searched for home – and even for the meaning of home. For different people, home means different things, but as Americans, we have common ground: we are Americans. In my personal experience, the longer I am away from home, the more I want to go back. Even though I feel so fortunate to live overseas and to have the opportunities that come with that, there is a continuous juxtaposition of conflicting emotions. We get to travel, experience different cultures, meet amazing people and, perhaps most importantly, we get to view the world for what it is: diverse and beautiful, full of people whose lives are so vastly different yet all so similar in the humanity we seek. Yet, there is still part of me that feels unsettled; there’s just something about a good, old-fashioned American festival to make me really feel at home again. It’s almost impossible to deny that fried cheese, funnel cakes and fireworks are about as American as it gets… other than apple pie, baseball and a Sousa march. Some of my most vivid childhood memories revolve around July 4th. Perhaps this is because July marked the middle of summer and it’s a beautiful time in the Midwest, or perhaps it’s because it is one of the most unifying times of the year for Americans. July 4th brings out that National Anthem singing, steak grilling, firework watching kind of proud; a sentiment that has and continues to permeate differences. Long ago on Kadena Air Base the need for a taste of home was recognized and in 1956, the first celebration of America took place and was named Carnival of Carnivals. Throughout the years the name changed from Carnival of Carnivals to Kadena Karnival and finally to AmericaFest in 1993. Throughout the years, the event has taken place on the flight line as an air show of sorts with entertainment, demos, static displays and food, since no true American party is complete without it.
34 WWW.KADENAFSS.COM
In 1970, the success of the event was even measured in food sales, an article from the base paper says “There were record sales this year [1970] with over 29 miles of hot dogs sold, 23,000 pizza pies, 59,843 Tacos, 45,000 balloons, 26,745 cotton candies and soda flowed like a typhoon downpour.” Perhaps it was a simpler time or perhaps the success of an event was instead marked by the lives that were made better through a brief, yet essential morale boost. This same year, Irving Fleischer was named Mr. Kadena Karnival for his work on the event. Mr. Fleischer was a staple in the planning and execution of many Kadena Karnivals though he gave all credit to the people of Kadena Air Base for the success of this event. The Kadena Karnival was not only a morale booster for the Americans serving their country in Japan, but it was also to build friendships with our host nation. Even from the early stages, the patriotic celebration was an open base event, allowing local Okinawans to experience a small taste of American culture. All were invited to tour aircraft, speak to the aircraft crews, enjoy the array of food booths along with the entertainment and the opportunity to mingle with service members and their families. It’s estimated that even in the 70s, event attendance was near one million – a figure that is almost difficult to comprehend. One million people, over the course of a few days, coming together for one thing: to celebrate America.

oday, AmericaFest is one of the year’s greatest events on Okinawa. Its entertainment is unmatched with performances in the last few years by Jessie James, Three Doors Down and this year, Usher. Food and craft vendors line the street ready to feed the masses and their large American appetites. There are games for kids and adults and even carnival rides for the brave few. There are cultural performances along with performances from local and on base dance groups. Fireworks will be the ultimate end cap to a day spent creating and strengthening bonds, celebrating patriotism and feeling at home.

Summer Reading Program
It’s that special time of year again on Okinawa. The beaches are calling, the summer festivals are around the corner and the Kadena Base Library is gearing up for the annual Summer Reading Program. This year’s theme, Read for the Win, is in conjunction with the 31st Olympiad and the Kadena Base Library will be celebrating sports and achievement. The Summer Reading Program kicks off at the Teen Center with opening festivities including an exciting game of Minute to Win It that everyone can enjoy. Throughout the month of July, the Library will host many other fun games like Face the Cookie, Breakfast Scramble, Stack Attack, Snowball Toss, A Bit Dicey and Suck it Up! Even if you’re not going to be on Okinawa all summer, logging your reading minutes can be done online! As always, all types of reading minutes can be logged – escape to a reality different than your own, read aloud to your child or just brush up on the most recent AFIs. Prizes, which include gift certificates from the Risner Sports Prop Shop and Risner Fitness Center along with Emery Lanes, will be awarded for reaching reading milestones!
Log your minutes online from Monday, 20 June through Saturday, 6 August!
Registration opens Monday, 20 June at kadenafss.com
Summer Reading Program Kickoff
Thursday, 30 June • 1 pm - 2 pm
Summer Reading Recommendations Part of summer is actually being able to read without being forced to do so. There are so many books to read and what better way to build up minutes for the Summer Reading Program than reading something you love? What would I recommend for the teens here? Well, battle your way through All Quiet On the Western Front for the real World War I and all of its tragedies. Maybe you’re a poet in need? Try reading short poems by Emily Dickinson! What about going back to Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe or The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon for a new type of reading experience. What about a play? A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen is a good one, but for those of you wanting to hunt for adventure, dive into the Mortal Instruments or 39 Clues series. There are so many options and one life simply isn’t enough to accomplish all of the reading, even for me!

Recreation 10 Reasons I Love Yoga (And You Should Too!)
“For me, yoga is a way of life”
Food The Chorizo Eggs Benedict What happened next was beautiful harmony of chorizo, egg yolk and fluffy whites, toast and chipotle hollandaise sauce that made these big brown eyes look like a Japanese anime! I was totally astonished that I actually liked it – no, I LOVED it.
Family No Money, Mo’ Problems I’m going to be honest with you. When it comes to money, I’m less on the saving side and more on the “buy those shoes” side.
For me, yoga is my favorite way to exercise and I’m not ashamed to say that I utilize vigorous flow yoga classes as a means to stay healthy. As a regular practitioner and certified yoga instructor, it is also more than exercise; yoga is a way of life for me.
