FAMILY, YOUTH, & TEEN We all remember the moment we found out we would be moving to Okinawa. After seemingly endless appointments, paperwork, goodbyes and traveling, our first moments on Okinawa were full of excitement, exhaustion and confusion. Whether you’ve been here for years, are just arriving or will soon be heading elsewhere, don’t let your time on Okinawa go by without making the most of every moment.

Written by Ariel Tipton & Arielle Sullivan Photos by Nagi Marie Quirk

We took advantage of some down time and spent the day with Kadena FSS. Join us for a day full of delicious food and adventures. We’re so excited to share with you everything we did. Though our names are similar, our days were different so pay attention because you won’t want to miss a single detail!

breakfast

Café Latte • 966-7409

Ariel: It was a close call choosing between the Belgian waffle and the French toast, but after some serious thought, I went with the Belgian waffle. I was so glad I did! The waffle came out with whipped cream and strawberries perfectly placed on top and I even indulged in some syrup. What a great way to start my morning!

Arielle: I had a spread of eggs, bacon, hash browns, toast and coffee. It was the perfect energy boost to prepare me for a full day of fun! The eggs were outstanding and the coffee was some of the best I’ve ever had. Turns out Café Latte grinds their own beans on site. My breakfast was delicious and filling, but I have to admit, I was really excited when Ariel shared some of her waffle with me.

diving / flying Kadena Marina • 966-7345 Arielle: I spent the morning exploring below sea level with the Kadena Marina. Dive certification is extremely affordable on Okinawa and the dive locations are world-renowned. The coral reefs are some of the most beautiful I have ever seen! I can’t imagine a better way to spend my morning than experiencing nature in one of its purest forms.

Kadena Aero Club • 966-7301 Ariel: I am completely terrified of heights but I knew I had to conquer my fear to experience Okinawa from the sky. Seeing Okinawa from a bird’s eye view with a knowledgeable tour guide is an experience only the Kadena Aero Club can provide and the views are absolutely breathtaking. I was able to see beautiful beaches and the clear blue water from a totally different perspective and I even captured some great pictures. Heights may still make me a little nervous, but I am glad I took advantage of this opportunity while on Okinawa.

lunch

Tee House • 966-7429

Ariel: Since arriving on island, I have craved some dishes from home that aren’t typically found here. A gyro sandwich and fries have been on my mind lately, so I was really excited when Arielle suggested Tee House for lunch. Tee House has fantastic gyros so it was an easy decision to make. Their lamb and beef gyro with homemade tzatziki sauce is great on a hot summer day. It’s perfectly filling and refreshing all at once! 12 WWW.KADENAFSS.COM

Arielle: After a morning of diving, I was more than ready for lunch. I absolutely love Okinawan Soba! The combination of rich pork spare ribs, green onions and tangy pickled ginger is hard to beat. I order this local favorite almost every time I see it on a menu and the Tee House’s version is one of my favorites so far!

FAMILY, YOUTH, & TEEN

relaxation

Risner Fitness Center • 634-5128 Arielle: I can’t think of better way to wind down from a busy day than with a deep tissue massage. This type of massage is great for those who, like me, have chronic muscle pain as it loosens up deeper muscle layers. A full day of activities can leave my muscles sore so the deeper pressure is a perfect for releasing tension. Afterwards, you’ll feel relaxed and renewed.

Ariel: I decided to go with the Swedish massage today. I typically choose the deep tissue massage, but the Swedish massage is a less intense version using slow and more gentle technique. My Swedish massage was the perfect way to pamper myself and unwind before a night out!

Schilling Community Center • 634-1387

learn japanese

Arielle: I have been trying to learn Japanese since I arrived on island! After taking a simple and fun Japanese class, I feel so much more comfortable and confident using every day words and phrases when interacting with locals. Our teacher was patient and understanding and even gave us helpful tips on remembering how to correctly use our new phrases. Ariel: I’ve been slowly learning Japanese but I do not know enough to hold a conversation beyond initial pleasantries. I could survive on Okinawa without knowing Japanese but I know it will help me in situations where it is the only means of communication. Living in another country has given me the opportunity to learn and practice a new language that I wouldn’t have done during a stateside assignment. I was so impressed with our teacher and I learned five new words and two phrases on the first day!

nightlife

Rocker NCO Club • 966-7234 Ariel: After a long day, nothing sounds more relaxing than music, friends, and a drink! The drink specials were so great that we ended up staying a few minutes longer than expected. Arielle: I always love a good excuse to get dressed up and head to Devour Hour in the Reflections Lounge at the Rocker NCO Club! As Air Force Club members we were able to indulge in some free, delicious snacks before heading to dinner.

Seaside Ristorante • 966-7401 Arielle: Seaside Ristorante is by far my favorite restaurant for dinner. The options are so diverse that no matter my mood I can always find something delicious. I’m not sure which was better, the seafood bisque or the view! Ariel: I decided to stick with my favorite item on the menu: the Grilled Salmon. I never leave hungry after dinner at Seaside. From the Shrimp Jammers to the Grilled Salmon with vegetables and red potatoes, I’m always stuffed! Plus, the ocean view is spectacular. VENTURE 13

Congressional Award • United States Congress’ award for young Americans The Congressional Award is an award given to young Americans ages 14 to 23 who have set and reached goals in the realms of Volunteer Public Service, Personal Development, Physical Fitness and Expedition/Exploration. The award was established in 1979 by Congress to recognize the accomplishments of America’s young people. President Jimmy Carter signed the bill into law and since then each president has chosen to support and continue the program. There are requirements for each area of service presenting different levels of challenges for participants. The goals set by each individual must exhibit a certain level of social awareness, dedication and sensitivity while still being attainable. Application to the program is open to anyone. There are no academic achievement and physical capabilities requirements. The program is open to all and all are encouraged to apply. Once an invdividual is approved to participate, an adult advisor must be chosen. This adult advisor must be committed to helping the participant set and reach their goals. The time spent on the activities is cumulative. Individuals decide the pace at which they’d like to complete their activities; it is a way for America’s youth to expand their horizons with activities they already enjoy. Each year, winners of the Gold Medal are invited to Washington, DC for an awards banquet to meet the President of the United States. For more information, stop by the Youth Center or the Teen Center. You can also visit www.congressionalaward.org for more details. 20 WWW.KADENAFSS.COM

Tomigusuku City English Camp By Megan Wertz, High School intern (2014)

The Teen Center often has trips for their members to attend. Last summer, I took part in the Tomigusuku City English Camp trip, a two-day trip to a local English camp. An English camp is a place where students learning English in Japan can further their English education outside of their regular academic schedule. On our first day at Tomigusuku City English Camp, the volunteers and students started off with introductions and split up into five teams. Once in our teams, we further introduced ourselves to the students at Tomigusuku. One of the students showed us Chinese martial arts he had been learning and practicing while another student showed a few magic tricks with cards and coins. It was fun to interact with the students before our afternoon of activity began. We ate lunch and were able to sit and converse with the students. The students were eager to use their English, asking the volunteers questions to get to know them and learn new things. The students also taught us volunteers about Somen noodles. Somen noodles are traditionally served in a bamboo chute, requiring diners to ‘catch’ the noodles as they go by. We were even able to try our chopstick skills out to get a snack of Somen! If you’d like to read more about Megan’s trip to Tomigusuku City English Camp, visit the Teen Scene Blog at https://fssteenscene.wordpress.com!

Nakagusuku-jo Okinawan History Frozen in Time – By Rachel Kuhn • Photos by Nagi Marie Quirk –

I have this strange feeling that I am not myself anymore. It’s hard to put into words, but I guess it’s like I was fast asleep, and someone came, disassembled me and hurriedly put me back together again... – Haruki Murakami VENTURE 29

compass Nakagusuku Castle Ruins

L

et’s go for a journey. Let’s go back in time. We’ll travel centuries into the past to a time of kingdoms, castles and dynasties. We’ll wander through the countryside, up into the hills of Okinawa, to a castle rich in stories and mystery. Nakagusuku stands firm in the footholds of time, overlooking the bay, proud and stoic; much is yet to happen in the life of this fortress. The passage of time has brought about seasons of calm as well as seasons of turbulence for Nakagusukujo. For two hundred years, leaders of ancient farming societies began building castles, or gusuku, to establish boundaries and protect the land they claimed. They battled to gain power over what would become the Ryukyuan Kingdom and by the 14th century, three main powers ruled the Okinawan islands. The reign of these first Ryukyuan rulers marked the beginning of Nakagusuku’s long history. Built high above sea level, surrounded by steep, treacherous cliffs, the castle’s location was ideal for a king. From Nakagusuku, one has an unimpeded view of the East China Sea, the Pacific Ocean and much of the surrounding countryside. In 1440, when much of the castle’s construction had finished, King Sho Taikyu ordered his close confidant, Lord Gosamaru, to move from his home of Zakimi-jo to Nakagusuku-jo. Lord Gosamaru saw Nakagusuku’s construction to completion and, by order of the King,

began preparations for an attack on nearby Katsuren Castle. As the story goes, the lord of Katsuren Castle, Amawari, entered the good graces of the King, whispering words against Gosamaru. The King, fearful that Lord Gosamaru had turned on him, sent Amawari with his armies to defeat Gosamaru and regain control of Nakagusuku-jo. After the conflict, only King Sho Taikyu remained to carry on the first Sho Dynasty. Through the years, the castle has served various purposes; it was used as a primary school and even a village office. Up until the 1800s, Nakagusuku Castle enjoyed a relatively quiet period of Ryukyuan history until Commodore Matthew Perry of the United States took an expedition to Okinawa. Perry was most impressed by the castle’s architecture. Though it was built hundreds of years prior to his visit, it was quite clear that the castle’s construction was highly advanced compared to that of Mainland Japan’s techniques. Nakagusuku’s walls lack mortar; the limestone used was so carefully cut and jointed that cement was unnecessary to maintain the structural integrity of the castle. Today Nakagusuku Castle is but a shadow of its former glory. No longer is water drawn from the wells or are elegant horses trained within the walls. Nakagusuku has relinquished its duties and is resting peacefully,

allowing people to pass through the gates and catch a glimpse of Okinawan history. Though much of the castle has been destroyed by time and war it is still considered one of the most well preserved castle ruins on Okinawa. Kings, guards, and servants may not be the principal inhabitants of the castle anymore, but life still abounds at Nakagusuku-jo. While there are beautiful gardens on the grounds of Nakagusuku-jo, the castle walls bear witness to the resilience of Okinawan nature. New life is breathed into Nakagusuku as flowers and foliage spring up from the rocks, adding even more beauty to what is already a remarkable piece of history. Nakagusuku Castle was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1972. Do you want to learn more about Nakagusuku Castle and other castle ruins on Okinawa?
