family Anime is a widely known form of art featuring hand-drawn or computer animations. It is an art form that began in 20th century Japan, unique and diverse with distinct production methods and techniques that have adapted over time in response to technological advances. Noburo Ofuji pioneered some of the earliest Anime works, displaying his creations on blackboards with paper cutouts and silhouettes. Once the digital era came about, many old forms of animation were phased out. By the 1980s, Anime was officially accepted in mainstream Japan leading to a major production boom. Japanese animation studios were at the forefront of many limited animation techniques that helped mold modern day Anime. The production of this art style focuses less on the movement, like typical animation, and more on realism of settings and camera effects. Since its inception, Anime has evolved into a worldwide phenomenon with over 430 production studies and over one thousand known series.
Although Anime has been around for over 100 years, very few animations from the early years have survived. In 2005, a two-second film loop, as well as original drawings, were found dating back to the early 1900s. Since then, however, no others have been found. There were three original animators, Oten Shimokawa, Jun’ichi Kouchi, and Seitaro Kitamaya; they were known as the ‘fathers’ of Anime. During World War II, much of their work was featured in films, the first of their kind to draw attention to this new style of illustration. As years passed, Anime started developing further, breaking off into different genres based on their distinct locations throughout Japan. Each Anime is produced for a specific target demographic such as Kodomo for children, Shojo for girls, Shounen for boys as well as other series targeting adult audiences. Once Anime artists realized they could attract many different types of people to this style of art, variations of interests started to arise.
If you’re interested in learning more about Anime there are many options on island to do so! One of the first stops you’ll want to make is the Kadena Base Library. There you will find books, DVDs and online resources to help you learn more about Anime and get you started on your new hobby! Next, stop by Kadena Information, Tickets and Travel to book your spot on their day trip to Kokusai Street. This excursion allows you to visit Animate Naha, Japan’s largest retailer of Anime, games and manga. Also, make sure to visit Jump Station for character goods and apparel featuring some of your favorite anime heroes.
26 WWW.KADENAFSS.COM
Anime has very diverse artistic styles, character proportions, and features that can be quite varied, including characteristically large, emotive and realistic eyes. Many wonder why Anime characters typically have large eyes in proportion to their body size and the start of this can be traced back to Osamu Tezuka. Early American animation characters, such as Betty Boop, heavily influenced Tezuka’s signature style. He is an important influencer in Anime history with his iconic techniques and designs that allowed the entire range of human emotions to show solely through the eyes of his characters. To accomplish this, artists add color and shading, specifically to the cornea, to give them greater depth. Anime has gone through many drastic changes over the last few decades, but the fundamentals of portraying a character through their physical features has remained the same. Hair is extremely exaggerated, often unnaturally lively, colorful, and uniquely styled. By doing this, artists are able to emphasize the action and emotions of the characters for a larger visual effect. For the most part, the remainder of the character’s body stays
in proportion with a life-like figure. Anime has become one of the most popular forms of artwork for realistic emotions and looks of the characters. Each drawing contains details allowing you to make a connection with the characters. This was the ultimate goal of early Anime artists. Today, Japanese Anime has fans all over the world with movies, comic books and theme parks based off traditional Anime styles. Although Anime has made its way all over the world, living in the country where it originated allows us to experience Anime in many different forms. Most of us are only on Okinawa for a short period of time and never fully grasp or appreciate the history by which we are surrounded. The next time you go into a local arcade, pick up a comic book or plan a family trip to Tokyo Disney, remember the ‘fathers’ of Anime and how their ideas sparked so much of what we see and enjoy about Anime today.
Now that you’ve learned a little more about Anime, take your new knowledge to the streets for the MCCS Comic Con 2015. Comic Con will be held at the Camp Foster Field House on Saturday, 17 October from 10 am to 7 pm. The event will be host to an extensive list of talented Anime artists, actors and production staff such as: Justin Cook • Funimation Voice Actor (Yu Yu Hakusho’s Yusuke Urameshi) Sean Schemmel • Voice Actor (Dragon Ball Z’s Goku, King Kai and Pokémon’s Jimmy, Morrison, Lucario, Archie, Cyrus) Christopher Sabat • Voice Actor (Dragon Ball Z’s Vegeta, Piccolo, Yamcha) Yuji Kaida • Illustrator (Movie Posters/Model Kits/Mecha/Kaiju/Anime) Junichiro Tamamori • Anime/Mecha designer (Yamato 2199) Okina Kamino • Japanese Novelist/Manga creator (Cat Planet Cuties) Yuki Tedokon • Local anime singer and voice actor Raito • Composer

Leave the tricks and treats for the two legged family members.
Keep your pets in a separate area during peak trick or treat times.
Chocolate, especially dark and baking varieties, can be incredibly dangerous to both cats and dogs. Treats containing the sweetener xylitol can also be very harmful for your fur baby. Even if it isn’t chocolate and you’re absolutely certain that your treat doesn’t contain any xylitol, it’s still best to refrain from sharing with Fido. All that sugar, spice and things not so nice really aren’t made for animals to consume. Do yourself, your pet and your wallet a favor and share it with your human neighbor instead. If you do suspect your fur baby has ingested something potentially toxic, immediately call your closest emergency veterinarian for advice on how to react.
Even the most social cat or dog can behave differently when hoards of new humans, possibly dressed up as something not so human, ring their door bell and scream, “TRICK OR TREAT!”
Keep wires and cords from Halloween decorations out of reach. A little nibble from a curious furry feline can cause stomach upset, burns and even shock! Let’s keep our playful pals out of the decorating business and in the cuddling under the covers business instead.
In case you completely ignored tip number four, please be careful when you do open the door! If you absolutely trust little Fluffy and have made the decision to let them help you pass out treats, please be sure that when you open the door to all the Elsas and Annas walking around that evening, your pet doesn’t dart outside before you have time to react. Before Halloween arrives, double check your pets’ ID tag and make sure all information is up to date, just in case someone gets out. Most importantly, have fun on Halloween and absolutely include your dogs and cats in the festivities. Just be sure to take a few extra precautions to ensure all members of your family wake up happy and healthy on November first.
Carefully consider whether or not to dress up your pet. Costumes are great for the pets who love to dress up, but for those who aren’t as excited about the whole ordeal, it can be more stressful than anything else. Adding stress to an already exciting and new situation can potentially lead to your animal acting out of character. With lots of little human monsters running around on Halloween, it’s best to be sure your animal really enjoys dressing up like a lobster before voluntelling them to do so. If your pet loves to be the center of attention and just can’t wait to don their poofy princess dress, just be sure the costume doesn’t constrict their movement, breathing, hearing or vision. The good news is, you can head over to Karing Kennels Boarding Facility and test out a costume on your pal to see if they like it or not!

I
remember being uncertain about whether or not I would even make it to the top the first time I set foot on a trail that would, according to my guide books, take 12 hours round trip. Sure, I had been on afternoon hikes, but they had never taken me longer than a handful of hours to make it to the top of the mountain and back. Flashback to the previous summer, I found myself driving 12 hours alone in my car, moving from the shores of Florida to the mountains of North Carolina. But there I was, planning to walk for that amount of time and hopefully not fall, lose hope or get lost. I was nervous but I was also ready to begin taking my leisurely afternoon hikes up a notch. One foot in front of the other, I was off. Fast forward 12 hours and 45 minutes later, and my hiking partner and I were back in my SUV as the sun was setting over the top of the mountain we had just hiked. Of all the hikes before and since, that is the one I was most proud to complete.

Several years later I find myself in the extraordinary country of Japan. Home to some of the best kept hiking secrets in the world. Even Okinawa boasts some really fantastic little hikes! However, if you want to spend all day hiking trails that go for miles on end, you’ll want to head to mainland Japan. Kagoshima Prefecture, located on the most south western tip of mainland Japan, is home to some of the most spectacular and unique hiking you will find. The city offers fantastic restaurants and shopping, but any visit to this area is not complete without spending time hiking and experiencing the daily eruptions of the surrounding volcanoes. Mt. Karakunidake is the highest peak on Mt. Kirishima. About 1,700 meters (5,577 feet) above sea level, this is the highest peak in the Kirishima National Park. Formed by a volcanic eruption about 17 million years ago, there is a volcanic crater at the top, also known as a caldera, 800 meters (2,624 feet) in diameter and 300 meters (984
RECREATION
feet) deep. Once at the summit, you have panoramic views of the other peaks of Mt. Kirishima as well as Mt. Sakurajima, an active volcano in Kagoshima Bay. Wild deer, beautiful flora and the opportunity to spend hours outside connecting with nature - these are moments some people only dream of. The second highest peak on Mt. Kirishima is Mt. Takachiho-no-mine. At 1,574 meters (5,164 feet) above sea level, this sacred mountain has been worshipped since ancient times. This ridge is believed to have been the place where heavenly deities came into the mortal world. The ride to the trailhead is densely forested with lush vegetation. Once on the trail, the gradients begin to steepen due to the compacted volcanic ash and the terrain becomes more rocky, opening up to a volcanic moonscape. This allows for spectacular views throughout.
The Kirishima shrine is located at the southern foot of Mt. Takachiho-no-mine. It is said to have been founded in the sixth century but has been destroyed multiple times by the eruption of Mt. Kirishima. The current shrine was constructed in 1484 and rebuilt in 1715. An 800 year old Japanese cedar grows near the Kirishima shrine. I absolutely love Mr. Muir’s belief that going into the wilderness is going home. I feel most like myself on a trail. Disconnecting from my cell phone and plugging into the beautiful Earth is my idea of downtime. However, Kagoshima is literally home to many wonderful people. For those who take advantage of Kadena Outdoor Recreation’s upcoming hiking trip to Kagoshima National Park, Naoki Uchida will be guiding you through the wilderness of his home. We are fortunate to have Naoki-san here with us on Okinawa, offering opportunities to explore the outdoors. Make life daring, pack a bag and head out on the adventure of a lifetime.
