T

he Shi Shi Mai, or Lion Dance, is a tradition that transcends borders, having roots in much of present-day Asia including India, China, Korea and Japan. Regardless of where the Lion Dance is performed, it is done to deter evil spirits and bring prosperity by beckoning the god of harvest and wealth. There are multiple stories to account for the Shi Shi’s origination, but only a handful have made their way into the main stream. One of the more widely believed legends of the Shi Shi Mai’s beginning is that of a monk circa 300 BC. The monk had a dream that many evils were to befall China. He prayed so feverishly to the gods that they would protect his homeland and he was rewarded with a vision of a lion. The monk had never seen such a creature before as lions are not native to China, causing him to piece together a new version of the lion from animals he did know: dragons and unicorns. Another tale recounts a monk taming a lion during the reign of the Jade Emperor. The Emperor was given a lion as a gift from visiting Persians. He was so enamored by such a magnificent creature but was unable to handle its aggressive temperament. The Jade Emperor sought the help of an old monk to calm his new pet. The lion, now somewhat tame and pliable after his time with the monk, was put on display for all to see, paraded around as a magical animal. Stories spread throughout the kingdom, the lion becoming more and more magical and otherworldly with each telling. A third story takes place in Heaven with a playful, mischievous lion. The Jade Emperor, having been subjected to too many of the lion’s jokes cut off the lion’s head. The lion’s death was witnessed and grieved by Guanyin, the Chinese Goddess of Mercy. She felt so much sorrow for the lion that she took it upon herself to save him, tying him back together with a magical, red ribbon. She bestowed upon him a mirror and a horn to protect him from evil spirits. In modern Lion Dance, the ribbon, mirror and horn are all used as part of the costume. Over time, the stories of the lion, along with colorful costumes and dances, made their way to Okinawa, permeating culture and becoming a fluid part of Okinawan life. Though the Shi Shi Mai is traditionally called the Lion Dance, the actual creature itself can be a lion, dog or even a deer. Shi Shis, or Shisas as many know them on Okinawa, are seen everywhere on this beautiful island, protecting doorways and watching over homes. These traditional guardians come in pairs, one with a closed mouth the other with an open mouth. The open-mouthed lion is thought to be saying ‘ah,’ the first sound of the Japanese alphabet while the closed-mouth lion-dog is saying ‘un,’ the last sound of the alphabet. Some believe that this symbolizes the beginning and end of life while others hold that the open mouthed lion is scaring off evil spirits as the closed-mouth lion holds in good spirits. The Shi Shi Mai is performed annually in Uruma City on Okinawa. Uruma is believed to be the home of the lions that, as legend has it, once lived on Okinawa. The dance is an intricate one between a lion and a man, possibly the monk who is believed to have tamed the lion. Today, local groups travel to Uruma City to perform the Shi Shi Mai, continuing a centuries-old tradition.

We make life better... The 18th Force Support Squadron has held this mantra for years yet it is more than just a saying – it is quite literally a way of life. As part of the busiest operational wing in the Pacific, our mission to take care of our people is one we take very seriously. We are made up of both active duty military and civilians who have a vested interest in the well being of Team Kadena and everything that entails. We are the largest FSS in the entire Air Force, which means we have the capability of impacting many lives for the better. That is our true mission: Make life better. We want to make your life better. Yes, you! Whether you know it or not, you’ve been to a Force Support Squadron facility. You’ve probably dined in one of our eateries, taken a class at an FSS facility like the Schilling Community Center or maybe you’ve been enjoying healthy lifestyle encouragement from the Risner Fitness Center. No matter which facility you’ve taken advantage of, we hope your experience was a positive one; we pride ourselves in our attention to customer needs. We offer programming that is unique to Kadena Air Base. The Kadena Aero Club, for example, is an activity offered nowhere else on island. Here you can earn your private pilot certificate or take an aerial tour of Okinawa. Both are experiences that will stay with you when your time on Okinawa has ended. Karing Kennels also offers services unique to Kadena Force Support Squadron. Boarding, adoption and grooming are all available with the comfort of knowing that high standards are maintained not just because of its affiliation with the Air Force, but because it is an FSS activity. The Kadena Force Support Squadron strives to keep you in the know. We use more channels of communication than any other activity on island with frequent use of multiple social media avenues, a website, newly released blog, weekly AFN radio appearances along with radio and TV commercials and video documentaries. Our website is the home to a stand-alone, customizable monthly calendar of events. We have 29 active Facebook pages for individual FSS facilities while maintaining our Kadena Force Support Squadron Facebook page to distribute base-wide event and programming information. Along with Facebook, Instagram and Twitter are also in our social media arsenal used not only for the distribution of information, but also to connect with our customers on a more personal level. Our website is visited by hundreds of thousands of people each year so we are constantly updating it to insure that it represents the FSS mission with correct and current information. Our blog perfectly encapsulates what it is to live and work on Kadena Air Base with real experiences from real people. Our programming is deeply rooted in customer service, taking care of our own and giving back. Every dollar made at a Force Support Squadron facility goes straight back into the squadron. We fund our own events, revamp our facilities and create better programs for our Airmen. Because of the hard work of every Force Support Squadron employee, we are able to offer many of these events and trips at a discount; we want to give you and your family the best experience possible on Kadena Air Base. As a squadron that is 2,500 people strong, our reach is far greater than any squadron on base. We provide services for all ages, whether you’re an unaccompanied airman, a family of four on your second tour in Okinawa or a newly married couple. The 18th Force Support Squadron wants to know…

How will you make life better today?

trikers Café

Located in the heart of Emery Lanes is Strikers Café, one of my favorite places to order pizza on Kadena. Strikers Café has a large selection of different pizza toppings to choose from but the top contenders are the Pepperoni and the Buffalo Chicken pizzas. Although both share the same fresh crust, the toppings are totally different. The Pepperoni pizza features homemade sauce made by Pat, a manager at Emery Lanes. Pat took an old family recipe and scaled it up for larger volumes, so everyone can enjoy this famous sauce. If you’re like me and love pizza smothered in sauce, Strikers Café perfectly crafts pizza for that. The pepperoni was plentiful as well; in every bite I was able to indulge in the crust, cheese, sauce, and pepperoni. Another pizza that calls my name (and especially my husband’s) is the Buffalo Chicken pizza. This pizza features buffalo sauce, cheese, red onions, oregano and chicken spread all over the homemade crust. For a buffalo pizza, this is definitely one the entire family can enjoy – it has just the right amount of heat. Whichever way you decide, you won’t go hungry at Strikers Café. hipper’s Snack Bar

I’m convinced pizza is actually a perfectly balanced meal and I feel no guilt eating to my heart’s content. The new brick oven pizza at Chipper’s Snack Bar is eight slices of bliss and I will shamelessly admit that I shared an entire pie with only one other person. Chipper’s Snack Bar isn’t afraid to experiment with unconventional toppings, boasting both a Barbecue Chicken and Taco Pizza as popular specialty pies. The dough is light yet still substantial enough to easily handle extra toppings. Personally, I’m a fan of the staples; give me cheese or pepperoni pizza any day! While the toppings seem simple and expected, the final product is anything but ordinary. Chipper’s Snack Bar • 966-7327 Located at Chibana Golf Course

I have never felt more satisfied by one slice of pizza in my life. However, it was so good I had to have another! Anytime I am in a hurry or I don’t feel like cooking dinner, Banyan Tree Club Snack Bar pizza is a full meal on the go and I know I will be happy and stuffed. Their pizza comes in various sizes with different topping options so everyone can create a pizza they love! Banyan Tree Club Snack Bar • 966-7372

easide Ristorante

– Ariel Tipton

Oh Seaside, my respite in this crazy world! As you can tell, Seaside Ristorante tops my list of favorite restuarants. I crave the peace I feel sitting outside looking out on the Kadena Marina and the food, well, the food is delectable and simply delightful. While I tend toward the soup and salad, pizza is my splurge. Seaside Ristorante offers both medium and large sizes, but for me, the medium is big enough for two, so I share (I promise I do!). While I’m not picky when it comes to pizza toppings, Margherita is my favorite. At Seaside, they have the perfect blend of tomato, basil, roasted garlic, Mozzarella and marinara sauce. Each bite is simple and powerful, all of the ingredients standing out while mingling in beautiful harmony. The crust is perfection, a blend of crispy and soft. Seaside also offers many other gourmet pizzas like the Trio Formaggi, Shrimp Scampi, Grilled Chicken and Four Seasons. My friends tell me the Shrimp Scampi pizza is top notch. They love the combination of garlic cream sauce and sautéed jumbo shrimp. This pizza is loaded with fresh herbs, spinach, shredded Parmesan and Mozzarella cheeses. See you at Seaside Ristorante… I’ll be on the patio with my pizza. – Leya Bonorris Seaside Ristorante • 966-7401 Located at Kadena Marina

afé Latte

When it comes to the best pizza on Kadena, hands down my winner is Café Latte. Twice a month, I call in to place my order and make my way to the Kadena Officers’ Club. The pizza is always fresh and ready when I arrive. The perfectly melted cheese and the thin crust give it a heavenly crunch. Yum! They even make their delicious sauce from scratch! Personally, I think the best part of the pizza is the sauce. Café Latte’s pizza sauce is what sets it apart from all other pizza eateries on island. It has the perfect blend of flavorful tomatoes, herbs, spices and a hint of olive oil. My favorite pizza is the cheese because it has found culinary equilibrium with its thin crust, rich cheese and marinara sauce. You can’t go wrong with the classics. kuma

Many people head to Okuma to relax on the beach, but I head to Okuma for pizza. I consider Okuma’s brick oven pizza Okinawa’s best kept secret. Unlike most pizza cooked over racks, brick oven pizzas are cooked directly on the stone surface. This results in perfectly charred crust with a soft and chewy center. The chef mentioned they spent months perfecting the dough with a recipe given to them by the world-famous chef, Dean Nole. Okuma has a wide variety of pizzas to choose from, but my go-to pizza is the Classic Cheese. The Classic Cheese features the right amount of cheese, herbs and sauce. Seriously, you can’t go wrong here. I’ve been on Okinawa for over 20 years, have tried pizza at dozens of eateries all over, and I can honestly say Okuma’s brick oven pizzas are hands-down the best on island! – Att Eachus Surfside Restaurant • 631-1805
