I
f you’re like me, you grew up in a landlocked zone without a lot of access to the water. Central Texas, during drought season, didn’t exactly prepare me for spending time in the water let alone how to handle emergencies that could potentially take place in the water. Moving to Okinawa was scary in a lot of ways - a large factor being that it is a tropical island. Which, if you’re not familiar with geography, means that it’s surrounded by water on all four sides. Let me just get this out there, water and I go together about as well as cats and water. I’m an Aquarius, but that’s as close to aqueous as I get. A pool or beach day for me means I’m laying by the water, not getting in it ad a major contributor to that is the fact that I don’t really have the training or background to support my confidence in the water. And while it’s fun to joke about not being comfortable in the water, it’s actually a very serious issue. Did you know that the reason Michael Phelps even began swimming in the first place was to learn water safety? Being prepared for water safety is something that should be on everyone’s to do list, especially while living here on Okinawa. Living on Okinawa allows you to experience the water in every way possible. With boating, kayaking, jet skis, snorkeling, diving and lounging poolside, the possibilities are endless. We are fortunate enough to live in one of the most beautiful, vibrant regions of the world and a fear of water should not prevent you from taking full advantage of your time spent here. A lack of knowledge about water safety is easily remedied and, let’s face it, water activities are fun! However, accidents do happen, and it’s of the utmost importance that we know how to handle those situations should they arise; it’s important to know that you can respond. Luckily, the Kadena Force Support Squadron has an extensive Aquatics program. Kadena Aquatics is here to teach us how to optimize safety during our stay in the water. I’m definitely going to take advantage of their programs and you should too!
22 WWW.KADENAFSS.COM
Water Safety Tips & Facts: Teach Them Young – Young children are especially prone to accidents involving water. Teach them to be comfortable in the water and how to swim. It’s important to educate them early about water safety. Programs such as Swim Life, offered by Kadena Aquatics, provides the perfect opportunity. You’ve Got a Friend In Me – Use the buddy system! Don’t swim alone - always designate a swim partner! Get Certified – Through the Kadena Aquatics Lifeguarding Certification you can guarantee that you’ll always be in the water safety know for any situation. Suit Up! – Always make sure you’ve got a well-fitted personal floatation device or life jacket while on the ocean. Anyone who is not comfortable with swimming should always use personal floatation devices. Even the most experienced swimmers would be smart to take this precaution. Wear Sunscreen – No one likes sunburns or sunstroke, so be sure to keep your skin protected! Use a sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher and be sure to wear hats and sunglasses while out in the sun for extended periods of time. Stay Hydrated – Water, Water Everywhere… But not a drop to drink. Make sure you drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated and alert, especially in the Okinawan summer heat. Constant Vigilance – Be alert and aware of your surroundings. Always actively monitor children in and around the pool. Make note of designated swimming areas and which areas are banned from recreational use. Remember, when going to the ocean, monitor sea conditions because they can change rapidly.

very year at the end of April and the beginning of May something happens here in Japan. Storefronts and restaurants go dark as people come and go for a week of holidays and vacations. Golden Week is a string of four national holidays that are always observed at this time of year. In 1948, the National Holiday Laws denoted nine official holidays, many of which fell at the end of April and the beginning of May. As many Japanese people took time away from their jobs to spend time with family, travel and take part in leisure activities, these industries saw a sudden rise in their revenue generation. Much like Black Friday in the States, Golden Week received its name due to this happening. “Golden Time,” which for Japanese radio stations is the time at which their listener base is the highest, also lends a part in the naming of Golden Week when the customer base for many service industries sees a large spike. Golden week is comprised of Showa Day, Constitution Day, Greenery Day and Children’s Day, each with historical and cultural significance.
36 WWW.KADENAFSS.COM
Showa Day marks the beginning of Golden Week. April 29th is the birthday of the Emperor Showa. As with some of the other days celebrated during Golden Week, Showa Day was not always a recognized holiday nor was it always on the 29th of April. Originally, Greenery Day was celebrated on this day, but in 2006 the government of Japan adjusted the holiday schedule of Golden Week. Emperor Showa passed away in 1989 after a 63 year reign and the holiday was designated more to remind the Japanese people of everything that happened during Emperor Showa’s rule which encompassed World War II, two attempted coups d’état and major changes in the political climate of Japan. Showa Day encourages people to take time to reflect on theirs and their country’s history. Of all the holidays during Golden Week, Constitution Day may be the most self-explanatory. It has been a national holiday since May 3, 1947 and celebrates the signing of the Constitution of Japan, calling the Japanese people to
reflect on their post-World War country and government. Originally, Greenery Day was celebrated on the 29th of April. It pays homage to the Emperor Akihito who had a great love and affinity for plants and nature. As with the other holidays of Golden Week, Greenery Day calls Japan to reflect on the many blessings Mother Earth has bestowed upon her. Since 2007, Greenery Day has been celebrated on the 4th of May. With Golden Week comes the hanging of carp streamers. This is perhaps one of the most distinct images that comes to mind when thinking of Golden Week. The carp streamers, hung for Children’s Day on May 5th, were originally hung as banners in ancient times for samurai going into battle. Like today, the banners were painted with bright colors and had pictures of carp on them, and over time, the banners turned into the windsocks we now see. Their meaning, however, has stayed much the same through the years. In Japanese culture, the
carp is a symbol of courage, strength and health as they have been known to swim up waterfalls, a metaphor for entering adulthood from childhood. Boys’ Day was a time for families to celebrate and honor their sons as they hoped their sons would grow up with the characteristics of the carp. Today, families celebrate Children’s Day with streamers for each member of the family. The top streamer represents the whole family and is usually colorful and includes a family crest. Next, the father’s carp streamer is generally black and followed by the mother’s red carp streamer. The children’s carp are at the bottom and are hung in relation to their age, in decreasing size and in colors such as blue, green, purple or orange. Children’s Day has been celebrated for over 1000 years but was formerly known as Boys’ Day. It wasn’t until 1948 that the government adjusted the name and designated it an official national holiday to honor both sons and daughters.

family Here on Okinawa, there are a few events that coincide with Golden Week. The annual Mud Festival, or Tanbo, is exactly what the name would have you believe it is. In Japanese, tanbo means flooded field and if you’ve ever seen a flooded field, you know there’s an abundance of mud. Traipsing through the mud beneath a plethora of carp streamers is usually accompanied by games, live music and festival food. Festival goers can also get to work catching flowing somen noodles. A warm-weather tradition, the somen noodles are most commonly served via bamboo chute. The noodles are very long and thin and flow quickly down a bamboo chute into a large bowl at the very end. People can test their chopstick skills and dexterity as they try to let minimal noodles slip by. Oftentimes, festivals like this will stretch late into the night as mud-covered participants take photos and enjoy the atmosphere trying to get a photo to capture the events. The goal being to become almost unrecognizable at day’s end. For many, this is the longest vacation time allotted during the year. It gives people time off to spend with family to travel, recharge and to reflect on their country’s history and blessings.

BEHIND OUR
HouSe-MadE GARLIC DILL
PICKLES •••••••••••• A lot of thought, love and attention to detail goes into our Craft Burgers. That includes setting aside 6 hours to make our own signature pickles. It may seem like a lot of time, and it is. But one taste and you’ll agree it’s worth every minute.
The cucumbers come to our kitchen farm fresh. We then sort, select, wash and chop them by hand.
We make the brine from scratch, using spices such as dill, peppercorn and mustard seed.
SWeeT & smOkeY BUrgEr This burger features Chili’s own mango infused BBQ sauce and is paired with lettuce, tomato, cheese, bacon and onion rings. The new Craft Burgers from Chili’s are served on potato buns, which are my personal favorite. Out of the four burgers I have been able to try, the Sweet and Smokey Burger topped them all. What’s better than a burger with onion rings and mango BBQ sauce on it?! Chili’s uses fresh ingredients, so you know you’re getting a quality burger every time. Those fresh ingredients come together to create so much flavor all wrapped into one tasty, juicy burger! The best part? You can decide the temperature at which you would like your burger cooked! I will definitely be back for another.

THe oldtimEr Keep it simple. Don’t reinvent the wheel. From the beginning of time that’s what the greats have said, and Chili’s listened. The Oldtimer is a simple classic, elevated with a Chili’s twist. The softness of the potato bun is perfectly complemented by the house-made garlic dill quickles (quick pickles, for the non foodies of the world). One bite and you’ll second guess every food choice you’ve ever made that didn’t involve this burger. The Oldtimer can be ordered with or without Cheddar and is served with all the burger basics: lettuce, tomato, red onion and mustard. The beef is a perfectly seared, juicy dream come true. It’s seasoned by hand and will have you drooling into the early morning wondering if dinner for breakfast can be the next fad diet. The Oldtimer holds its own up against even the fanciest of burgers.

CLasSic baCon buRgeR Burger lovers rejoice! The Classic Bacon Burger is everything you’d want a classic to be. Juicy beef. Melted sharp cheddar. Fresh tomatoes. Crisp lettuce, red onion and house made garlic dill pickles. And of course, bacon.
how it should be. The flavors of typical burger anatomy are enhanced ten fold by Chili’s new Signature sauce, which combines mystique and magic to create something wonderful.
It’s paired with an extra side of the new house made garlic dill pickles as well as Chili’s French fries. Your expectations can and should be quite high with this craft burger. If you’re a more conventional burger lover that doesn’t like to fool around with all the bells and whistles of other burger offerings, then the Classic Bacon Burger is a sure bet. Each bite, albeit a little messy, will have your taste buds singing the praise of traditional burger making. There’s nothing fancy about the Classic Bacon Burger and, I think, that’s
The long and short of it is that the Classic Bacon Burger won’t disappoint you. It won’t forget to call or write. It will always remember your birthday. You may have to do your part on going to Chili’s for your birthday, but they say relationships are a two way street. I digress. Do yourself a favor and go eat this burger. Treat yourself.

SOutHerN SMokEhoUse buRgeR The Southern Smokehouse Burger features onion rings, bacon, cheese, lettuce, tomato, house-made garlic dill pickles and Chili’s Classic BBQ sauce. The pickles and BBQ sauce make this burger tangy with a hint of spice from the pickles. If you haven’t had the chance to try Chili’s new house-made garlic dill pickles, now is the time. Not only are some on the burger, you will also receive a side to add or simply enjoy by themselves. Really, they’re that good to eat alone. Although the Sweet and Smokey is my favorite, the Southern Smokehouse comes in at a very close second. Which BBQ burger will be your favorite? I guess you’ll have to try them both! Happy eating!

Recreation Hike More. Worry Less. “Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home; that wildness is a necessity…” John Muir
Travel Some Australian Facts and Stuff. I never imagined Australia and I would share the same hemisphere. But here we are, 20 years later!
I absolutely love Mr. Muir’s belief that going into the wilderness is going home. I feel most like myself on a trail. Disconnecting from my cell phone and plugging into the beautiful Earth is my idea of downtime.
