10 Creative Scrapbooker | Winter 2022/23

There was a time when I first started scrapbooking that I ONLY created cards at Christmas and maybe the odd birthday card. At the time, I found the most joy in scrapbooking layouts with gorgeous photos in any size or shape. And I absolutely had an addiction for making mini-albums… TONS of mini-albums! Rarely did I create a card just because. WOWZERS, times have changed! Sitting back and reflecting, I really have no idea what triggered the change. Of course, our styles change over the years as do the products that we love to play with. Now I have realized that the method in which we LOVE scrapbooking will also change, perhaps without us even knowing it. I find my scrapbooking desk filled with sentiment stamps and word dies that weren’t there 5 or 6 years ago. I almost never create a layout WITHOUT using up the scraps to create a card at the end. I even have a drawer now filled with blank cards that I have created over time…for no reason. This drawer makes me just as

happy as my albums filled with photos and memories AND even happier when I mail them off to friends and family. In the Village of Inspired People on Facebook we have an ANGEL Birthday Card Exchange program and of course a Christmas Card Exchange. I used to think that our monthly Zoom crops were my favourite part about this online community. However, I am coming to realize it’s getting cards in the mail and sending them out to all our wonderful members that I am currently loving the most! How FUN it is to receive and send happy mail! Whether you are presently a card maker, a scrapbooker, an art journaller, or a mixed media artist, stay open-minded to exploring NEW ways to LOVE your supplies. Go with the paper crafting flow and see where it will take you. I have loved each and every path this fabulous hobby has taken me on, and I know you will too! Wishing you all mailboxes filled with handmade cards this holiday season!

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER KATHARINA DOYLE

1945 Katharina Doyle, Calgary, Alberta SUPPLIES: My Colors Cardstock, American Crafts Thickers, DCWV cork and burlap, Art Impressions stamp, Sakura gold marker, Mod Podge matte medium, unknown washi tape and patterned paper.

Capturing one’s heritage through scrapbooking—using old pictures and stories handed from generation to generation—is a true passion for many of us. It certainly is for me. Every time I sit with my elders and ask questions and listen to answers, I learn something new about my family. I urge you to take the time to go through that shoebox of folded and faded images with older family members. Listen to the stories take shape as you draw the memories out. When possible, ask your elders to write what they remember; get their thoughts in their own handwriting. Honour their stories with your work, as these are the fabric of who we are. Websters Dictionary for Kids defines heritage as “Traditions, achievements, and beliefs that are part of the history of a group of people.” As I pondered that definition, I realized that I also share a developing heritage with you—the Creative Scrapbooker community—

12 Creative Scrapbooker | Winter 2022/23

which has been together for 17 amazing years. We share a lot of traditions, achievements, and beliefs (namely, scrapbooking is good for the soul). Amazing things happen when it all comes together, such as the stimulus you provided for me to create pieces about my family’s farming heritage: that’s my father above c: 1945. This inspiration, along with your support of our magazine over the past 17 years encourages us to continue to grow and develop the Creative Scrapbooker Magazine community. Together as a group of creative souls, the tradition of our hobby will be part of how we define our own future heritage. I encourage you to bring your heritage into your scrapping and share it widely with others. I want to see it too! Hug strong,

Katharina

CATHIE’S CHOICE

Can you believe it? Here comes Christmas. This is one of my favourite times of the year, as I am able to share my passion of creating beautiful gifts using my favourite rubber stamps, dies, ink, and paint. This year, as a gift for my daughter Nikki, I decided to create a photo montage—a gorgeous wall display that she can leave up year-round. I used an amazing Christmas-ish die— Noel Decorative Die from Heartfelt Creations—to do the backgrounds on all three of the handmade frames. I referred to the die as “Christmas-ish” because it was designed as part of their Christmas angel series, however, it was perfect for this “Every Summer Tells a Story” custom-made gift. I then created a matching Christmas card that uses the beautiful Heartfelt Creations angel stamp included in this collection. To make the background for the Christmas card a little more Christmas-y I simply added a shading of blue and a gorgeous silver ribbon. To you and yours I wish you the very merriest of Christmases and happiest of New Year’s. Have fun sharing your passion with your loved ones through handmade gifts, cards, tags, and more that are “handcrafted from the heart.”

Angel Cathie Allan, Stony Plain, Alberta SUPPLIES: Creative Scrapbooker Super Stock, Heartfelt Creations stamps and dies, VersaColor ink, Be Creative Sookwang double-sided tape, The Robin’s Nest Creative Dew Drops, Tonic Studios Nuvo Deluxe Liquid Adhesive, unknown ribbon.

SCRAPS OF INFO Cathie created these projects using a number of products from the Heartfelt Creations Angel Series – including the Starry Noel Angel stamp and Noel Decorative die.

“An easy way to show SCALE in photos is to intentionally place a person within the frame as a size comparison.”

Figures 1 & 2

SCALE in photos It happens to all of us. You are standing in awe over a beautiful scene and capture it in a photo, but the photo leaves us disappointed because it fails to portray the real-life majesty or grandeur of the view! Why? In certain photos, if we don’t include a size comparison, our brains simply cannot grasp the scale and comprehend the real-life view. An awe-inspiring scene can lose its entire impact without a sense of scale.

38 Creative Scrapbooker | Winter 2022/23

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS The good news is we can easily remedy this by simply adding a person somewhere in our photo! Because we instinctively grasp the size of a typical human, including one gives our brains an instant comparison of the scale of what we are viewing. In fact, including a sense of scale is what often gives a photo its WOW factor! It also makes for a super fun “Where’s Waldo” game in our scenery pictures! For example, we spent a day in utter awe of the views on the Isle of Skye in Scotland, and although we captured hundreds of amazing photos, the one that quickly became a favourite included my son Justin standing on the top of a rock. Having him in the picture, especially compared to the tiny road and vehicles hardly visible in the background, portrays just how grandiose the Quiraing landscape is. In Figure 2, I captured my Dad watching this magnificent sunset on top of the Haleakala Crater in Maui. Without his subtle silhouette in the photo, we would not be able to grasp the full impact and scale of this amazing view. On rare occasions, the inclusion of people in the image shows the opposite scale of the one expected. For example, at first glance the castle in Figure 3 from Madurodam in Europe seems large and impressive… until you notice my kids standing behind it and realize the scale of the castle is actually miniature!! Without people standing beside it, the tiny size of the castle would not be evident.

Figures 3 & 4

Next time you are in awe of a scene, try adding in a person! An important TIP to remember is to place them somewhere inconspicuous, especially if you want the focal point of the photo to remain on the scene or structure. In Figure 4 of a funky building during a recent trip to New York, I made sure my daughter Lindsey was in the foreground and not very noticeable so that the focus goes to the building. Once you notice her, however, you get another perspective of the size of this structure (which happened to be a shopping mall!!)

3. Trim three (3) sheets of 65lb cardstock to measure 10” x 8 ½”. Put those sheets in your scoreboard 10”across and score at 1”. Next, add double-sided tape to the 10” length on two of the sheets.

4. Join the three sheets together, lining the score lines up, creating a long piece of cardstock, approximately 24" x 10".

5. Cut your chipboard, following the cut list measurements. Tape the edges (on one side only) of all of the chipboard pieces, as shown in the photo.

6. Adhere the chipboard to the cardstock. Use the score line at the top of the sheet as a guide, and line the chipboard pieces up, starting 1″ from the left edge. Leave approximately 1/8″ between each piece. (If you stack two pieces of your scrap chipboard pieces, that works as a guide.) Be careful not to make these spaces larger than ¼″.

7. Trim the excess cardstock, leaving a 1″ margin. Trim the leftover piece to 4″ × 7 ¾″ and set aside.

8. Adhere tape around the outside edges of the chipboard. Start to “train” the paper to fold over the edges of the chipboard (without adhering). This will stretch the fibres of the paper and could prevent cracking.

9. Using a ruler, mitre the corners. Get this as square as you can. (Using a grid mat can help.) Use a pencil to mark each corner, as shown.

10. Apply tape around the perimeter of the paper, but only to the pencil lines you created at the corners. Next, trim the corners off on the outside of the pencil line. When you’ve trimmed these, the pencil line should still be visible.

11. Peel the tape from one of the long edges of cardstock and chipboard. Fold the cardstock over the chipboard: start in the centre and move your hands out to the outer edges. Be careful not to pull the cardstock too tight, as this may cause cracking or fraying on the edges. Repeat on other long side.

12. Use your bone folder to taper the edges before folding the shorter sides. This will prevent sharp edges and makes for a cleaner presentation. Do not worry about gaps on your folded edges. They will be covered with patterned paper.

42 Creative Scrapbooker | Winter 2022/23

13. Apply tape to the outer edges of the leftover piece from Step 7. This is the gusset hider for the cover. Apply additional tape to the spine and on either side of the gusset openings on the cover, and then install the hider, centring top to bottom and left to right over the spine.

14. Use your bone folder to train the paper into the gussets: you can softly close the cover over to see the crease. Be careful not to push too hard or you may puncture the cardstock.

SCRAPS OF INFO Tammy decorated her album using the Echo Park Paper Co. Gnome for Christmas collection.

15. The cover is complete! Set this aside.

PREPARING THE CARDSTOCK PIECES

16. Score each piece, using the cut list provided. *Note the instructions on how to position the cardstock on your scoreboard. For example, "A" - place the 4 1/8" side across the top of the scoreboard and score at 1/2" down the 8" length. *Note that the following pieces have multiple scores - B, C, O. Line up the cardstock as noted and score at 1/2". Then ROTATE the piece, and score on the opposite side the same way (so both score lines are parallel to each other). *Score Piece C on two edges (left and bottom) to create an "L". (See photo 20 for reference).

17. Apply double-sided tape to all of the ½″ flaps that you scored. I recommend 3/8″ tape, as this fits perfectly on the ½″ flaps. You can use any width of the tape. However, the key thing to remember is to not have any tape on the score lines. • Once the adhesive has been attached to all the flaps, fold the flaps away from you and use your bone folder to crease each piece. This also helps to adhere the tape to the cardstock. • Note that when taping your pockets (B, C, N) you will have tape on both flaps and on the back on one of the opposite edges (to close the pocket).

ASSEMBLING THE ALBUM

18. Piece A – lining up the score line with the top left corner of the cover, adhere the piece so the flap opens (as shown).

19. Piece B – peel the tape on the long edge on the back first. Then press the flaps on each side to the exposed adhesive and peel the tape on the flaps. Install the assembled pocket starting in the bottom left corner, keeping the edges square to the cover on the left and bottom. The right edge of the pocket should fall into place just before the gusset on the spine. There should be nothing in the spine gussets, as this will affect the book closing properly.

20. Piece C - you have scored down the left side and across the bottom of this piece. Line the two score lines in the track of your trimmer to create a diagonal file pocket.

21. Piece C – adhere the left tab on the inside of the back cover against the spine, being careful not to go into the gusset. The bottom flap will be installed square to the bottom edge of the cover.

Royal families have access to privilege, riches, and power, yet they are not immune to the trials and tribulations of the common folk and are not sheltered from heartbreak, infidelity, mental health crises, and the ravages of aging. 26. Piece N (page 2 back pocket) – install this pocket in the same way you did in Step 19 – on the back of I at the bottom of the panel.

27. Piece K (page 2) – working on the spine, line up the scored edge with the flap from I that you installed in Step 23.

28. Piece M (page 2 flap) – line up the scored line with the right side of K. Adhere the flap to K with the page closing to the left.

29. Working on the back of K, install piece O (belly band) on the top and bottom edges, centering left to right.

30. Piece P (page 3) – working on the spine, line up the scored edge with the flap from K that you installed in Step 27.

31. Pieces Q (there should be two) and working on top of P, line up the score lines with the left and right edges to create a gate fold.

32. Pieces L (there should be two) and working on the spine, line up the scored edges with the flap from P that you installed in Step 30. Make sure the flaps do not land in the gusset. If they are in the gusset, overlap the flap from P on the spine.

33. Piece F – attach this piece to the back of E; line up the score line with the edge, and centre top to bottom.

34. Piece G – attach this piece to the top of E; line up the score line with the top edge, starting in the corner.

35. You should have eight pieces labeled D. These waterfall flaps will be placed on the inside of the front cover, on top of piece B that we installed in Step 19. Line up the scored edge on your first panel with the score on the left edge of the book, squaring to the bottom, and adhere.

36. Install three more flaps in the same way, lining the score line to the edge of the previous flap.

37. Install the other four flaps starting on the right side of the cover and working toward the centre (as shown).

38. Using a scrap piece from your cardstock, adhere a panel to the first waterfall piece on the left; this will be the closure. Using a magnet installation, you will close the waterfall assembly.

39. Tape one of your magnets down on the cover piece noted above. Place tape on the other half of the magnet, and sandwich the magnets together.

40. Close the cover into position and press firmly on the magnets. This should adhere one to the right. Apply more tape to keep these in place.

41. All done! You made it!

CUTTING TIPS: • ID column – this is what you label each piece with as you cut. • ITEM column – you will notice some rows are shaded: this signals a new piece of paper. For example – pieces A & B are cut out of one piece of cardstock; C is cut from a new piece of cardstock; D is cut out of two pieces of 80lb cardstock.

TIP: Save larger scraps to use as inserts.

• The arrows indicate which way to insert your paper into your trimmer

 

means to put the short end in first or in a landscape orientation means to put the long end in first or in a portrait orientation

• SCORING column – the first measurement is what you put across the top of your score board, and then score as indicated. • When you see score mark – r – another score mark (e.g. – 5 ½″ across @ ½″ r. ½″), place the piece across as indicated and make the first score. Then rotate and score the opposite side, so your two score marks are parallel to each other.

TIP: When decorating, trim your “patterned paper” smaller than the panel you are covering for perfect matting.

Expressing GRIEF through ART with Allison Orthner

Grief. It’s not a pleasant topic. In fact, we try to avoid it. The reality is, however, that we will all face grief at some point in our lives to various degrees. Those who have experienced a deep grief journey will attest to the fact that you don’t ever “get over” it, but you can get through it to a “new normal.” There is always hope. One of the things I have learned through my own grief journey, is that creating art is soul-soothing.

“The main purpose of Soul ART is to dig deep into important matters of the heart and soul through simple art that anyone can do.”

OUR ANGEL IN HEAVEN Stephanie Gammon Smithfield, North Carolina SUPPLIES: Brea Reese heave body acrylic paints and glitter ink, Craft Smart acrylic paint, Sweet ’n Sassy stamps, hymnal page.

SCRAPS OF INFO Stephanie created this canvas a few days after her dad passed away and used the hymn “Amazing Grace”, played at his funeral, to create the angel wings.

BIBLE ART JOURNALING

DRESSED IN GRIEF Allison Orthner Calgary, Alberta SUPPLIES: DecoArt Chalky Gesso, Decoupage Matte and Americana paints, Soul Art papers and graphics.

SCRAPS OF INFO I put Christy’s name on the red balloon along with another childhood friend I lost and left room for more names to be added knowing that death and grief is a natural part of life.

It was a Sunday morning in August 2016 when I unexpectedly became a member of what I now call the “grief club” (the one no one wants to join). I lost my soul sister, Christy, and began a grief journey that I’m still walking, but have found much soothing for my soul over the years creating art in her honour. The Soul ART project “Dressed in Grief” is the result of reading an extremely helpful book on grief called The Little Black Funeral Dress by Shirley Thiessen.

Shirley tells the story of how just hours before she learned of her 23-year-old son’s tragic passing, God led her to buy this little black dress with a royal purple lining. She wore it at his funeral and it became her sign that God cares deeply about our pain and is a source of comfort during grief.

royalty” and foils of gold as “God’s hope.” Both are reminders that God is in control of ALL, and He will help us find our way through the grief as He has for both Shirley and me. Creating art during the grief journey can bring about great comfort and help heal the heart and soul.

The dress on my project was inspired by Shirley’s story and is very symbolic. I tore pieces of paper representing our torn hearts and the pain of loss, but also included strips of purple as “God’s Creative Scrapbooker | Winter 2022/23 51

Everyone grieves differently, and the journey can be tumultuous. If you are in the midst of grief, I encourage you to create something in honour of the loss and hopefully find some soothing for your soul. We can hold space for both the pain of grief and the beauty of the relationship at the same time. Art helps us do this. These pieces of art from two artists powerfully portray this truth. Each one has a grief story and shares how creating art brought comfort.

SCRAPS OF INFO Stephanie created this art journal page on the 1 year anniversary of losing her dad. She wrote a long letter to him getting out everything she wished she could tell him, then pressed a gelli plate covered in paint on top to cover up most of it symbolizing that she will have to wait until Heaven to express it face to face. “Writing everything out that I had trouble expressing was extremely therapeutic.”

DRY BONES Kitty Bonouvrie, Netherlands SUPPLIES: Bruynzeel graphite pencil, Pigma Micron fineliner pen, Winsor &Newton watercolours.

SCRAPS OF INFO Kitty’s personal grief journey stems from a difficult childhood and after the recent passing of her pastor friend, a young father of 4, Kitty created this powerful art in her Bible. She chose Ezekiel where it talks of “dry bones without hope” and God’s response to “put breath in you and you will come to life”. It represents both her own grief as well as the grief of her friend who lost her husband and the power of God to bring hope and healing to both in spite of the pain. 52 Creative Scrapbooker | Winter 2022/23

To Tear or Not to Tear

Paper tearing is a simple technique that adds a huge impact to paper projects. With a touch of whimsy, a torn edge playfully builds support for the subject of the photo. Layers of torn edges mimic the natural textures of a landscape. Peek-a-boo holes torn into a background add tons of visual interest and a little bit of mystery! This gallery will inspire you to use torn paper in your next project!

Negative Space Lettering

Welcome to "Love Letters" a series of lettering articles written and illustrated by Kelly Klapstein. In each issue, Kelly will guide you through easy-to-follow tips and tricks as you learn the beautiful art of hand lettering.

72 Creative Scrapbooker | Winter 2022/23

When it comes to hand lettering, we always think about writing words by outlining and filling in letters. But have you ever thought about drawing “around” the words instead? There are countless creative ways to produce negative space letters. Let’s look at a simple “zentangle” approach to make some Christmas cards and tags with markers.

LOVE LETTERS

1

2

3

4

1. On white cardstock, use a pencil to lightly draw the block letters for a word. 2. Choose a shape, such as a circle, and one colour marker (or more) to draw the shape in different sizes. You can fill in the shapes or not. 3. Draw your shapes very close to the edges of your letters, so that the negative space word is distinct and legible.

4. Erase your pencil lines, and you are done! Adhere to a folded cardstock base for a card, or add some ribbon for a tag. This is a really relaxing, meditative way to make cards and tags. Take your time drawing your shapes. They don’t have to be perfect. Try using a different colour cardstock instead of white. You could also use this technique to create names as placecards on your holiday table!

LAYERED CARDINALS AND POINSETTIA BORDER

1. Use the seasonal words paper for the base. Trim the cardinals paper to 11.5″ square with the 12″Trimmer and adhere to base page.

3. Place one long edge of a 3″ × 12″ strip of dark green patterned paper into the paper tray of the Original Border Maker System. Punch edge with Poinsettia Edge Border Maker Cartridge, and then remove paper from tray, turn around, and punch the other 12″ edge.

5. Adhere the beige border onto the dark green border, using the Tape Runner. Add Foam Squares to the back of the cardinals border, trimming them to size with scissors. Then adhere the cardinals on top of the layered paper border. Ruffle the edges of the green and beige borders to add texture.

TECHNIQUE TASTERS

2. Use the cardinals Border Punch to punch a row of cardinal birds from red cardstock. Align the cardstock with one of the black lines on the front of the punch. Press down on the punch lever, and then move the punched shape along the base plate to match up with the image printed on the plate. Continue punching the length of the paper.

4. Repeat Step 3 to punch both long edges of a 2″ × 12″ strip of beige patterned paper. Use sticky notes to hold the strip in place on the Original Border Maker paper tray, as needed.

6. Mat photos and trimmed title card onto red cardstock, and adhere to layout as shown. Finish with a journaling tag and Seasonal Sightings die-cut foiled embellishments.

Brick contributes an excellent design element to cards and scrapbook pages by adding texture, a geometric pattern, and a sense of solidity. It can feel traditional, industrial, rustic, or edgy, depending on how the creator uses it in the project. A brick motif is a surprisingly flexible element, providing the option to use bold or soft colours, an embossed texture, or flat image to create a subtle background or a major feature. We give a solid 10/10 and stack up the kudos for this gallery filled with brick-spiration!

Journaling is the very Maker, heart Ranger ofTim scrapbooking. Holtz Distress Crayons, Not unknown only does it record important facts for future generations, such as who, patterned what, paper, when, stenciland and modeling where, paste. but it can also be cathartic to the storyteller who is sharing their intimate thoughts and feelings. Given its integral role in scrapbooking, why not add some creativity by twisting those words into interesting shapes that also help tell the story. For example, journaling about reading habits become the pages of a book or Christmas memories become part of the Christmas tree.
