Neues Leben unter Wasser Die

Umweltschutz-Organisation Quercus setzt große Mengen Fische aus, um den Bestand bedrohter Arten unter anderem im Arade und im Guadiana zu stärken und erhalten. Die Dürre, unter der viele Flüsse in der heißen Jahreszeit zunehmend leiden, das dadurch veränderte Ökosystem des Flussbetts und Umweltverschmutzung hätten zur Dezimie rung der Spezies beigetragen, ebenso die Ausbreitung nicht heimischer Fische und Pflanzen durch Menschenhand, so Quercus-Sprecher Paulo Lucas. In der Algarve und im Alentejo, dort im Rio Mira, wird der in Südportugal heimische Karpfenfisch ‘boga-do-sudoeste’ (engl.: Iberian nase) und der ‘escalo-do-Arade’ (dt. Aland, engl.: Ide) ausgewildert. Diese erdgeschichtlich sehr alten Fische stehen auf der Roten Liste der Weltnaturschutzunion IUCN. Im nächsten Schritt will Quercus die Flussuferzonen reinigen und sichern, um Überleben und Vermehrung der Neuzugänge zu sichern. Der Fisch hat nicht nur in ihrem Biotop eine wichtige Funktion, sondern ist auch eine wirtschaftliche Größe.

New life under water Environmental

The Algarve and the Rio Mira in the Alentejo, will see the reintroduction of the ‘boga-do Sudoeste’ (English: Iberian nose) carp, native to southern Portugal, as well as the ‘escalo-do Arade’ (Lat. Leuciscus aradensis). These geologically very old fish are on the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, IUCN. In the next step Quercus wants to clean and secure the river bank areas in order to ensure the survival and reproduction of the new arrivals. Not only does the fish does have an important function in its biotope, but is also of economic value.

Natur, Sport und Küche stehen im Mittelpunkt des Angebots, mit dem Algarve und Alentejo gemeinsam um Touristen werben wollen. Gemeinsam wollen die beiden Regionen den Naturpark Südwest-Alentejo und die Costa Vicentina erschließen, Wanderwege und Strecken für Fahrradreisende erweitern und verstärkt um ornithologisch interessierte Urlauber werben. Zudem wollen die Verantwortlichen die wachsende Passion von Extremsportlern für die Westküste für Sport-Tourismus nutzen, insbesondere für Langstreckenläufer. Als weitere Attraktion planen die Regionen gemeinsame Festivals der mediterranen Küche, rustikal wie auch auf Sternköche-Niveau. Die Algarve biete Sonne und Meer und habe in der vergangenen Dekade eine breite kulturelle Palette angelegt; gemeinsam mit dem Alentejo könne auch das Potenzial endloser Landschaften und der Ruhe dieser Weite einbezogen werden. Die Kooperation bringe „beiden Regionen Vorteile, denn jede kann das bieten, was der anderen fehlt“, bekräftigt Desidério Silva, Präsident des Algarve-Tourismusverbandes. Der Alentejo habe hervorragend entwickelte Freizeit-Offerten, die in der internationalen Tourismuswerbung meist untergingen. Solche Orte und Veranstaltungen in die touristische Planung für die Algarve einzubeziehen, bedeute ein Mehr für die Besucher des Südens und die verdiente Berücksichtigung für den Alentejo.

Westküste, Westcoast

Neue Note Ab diesem Monat bringt die Europäische Zentral-

bank (EZB) eine neue 5-Euronote in Umlauf, die erste Banknote der neuen Euroserie „Europa“ (Info: www.neue-euro-banknoten.eu). Die namensgebende Figur ist im Wasserzeichen und im Hologramm zu sehen. Die neuen Scheine besitzen optimierte Sicherheitsmerkmale, mit denen künftig auch neue Banknoten anderer Wertigkeit versehen werden. Dazu gehört die Zahl, die ihre Farbe beim Kippen des Geldscheins von Smaragdgrün zu Tiefblau ändert und auf der sich ein Lichtbalken auf und ab bewegt. Die alten Scheine bleiben vorerst gültig und werden sukzessive von den Banken einbehalten. Im Lauf eines Jahres wurden in Portugal 11.440 gefälschte Geldscheine aus dem Verkehr gezogen. Besonders häufig fielen dabei € 50-Scheine an. Portugals Anteil an den europaweit konfiszierten Blüten beträgt nur zwei Prozent. Die meisten Fälschungen waren so plump, dass sie ohne spezielle Kontrollgeräte identifiziert werden konnten.

New fiver In May, the European Central Bank (ECB) bring a new

5-Euro note into circulation, the first banknote of the new “Europa” Euro Series (info: www.new-euro-banknotes.eu). The portrait of Europa can be seen in the note’s watermark and hologram. The new notes possess enhanced security features, which will also be used on new banknotes of other values in the coming years. These include the number, which changes its colour from emerald green to deep blue when the note is tilted, and which displays a light effect that moves up and down. The old notes remain valid for the time being and will be gradually retained by the banks. In the course of one year 11,440 counterfeit notes were withdrawn from circulation in Portugal. €50 notes were particularly affected. Portugal’s share of confiscated counterfeit notes in Europe is only two per cent. Most counterfeits were so crude that they could be identified without special control devices.

Da es „schwere Finanzierungs-Probleme in den Bereichen Wasser, Abwasser und Abfallentsorgung“ gebe, soll der Versorgungs betrieb neu strukturiert werden, erklärte AdP-Präsident Afonso Lobato de Faria. Das bedeutet Angleichungen bei den Verbraucherpreisen. Spätestens ab 2014 werden in einigen Städten die Preise sinken, in anderen steigen, und zwar jeweils schrittweise über fünf Jahre hinweg. Zuvor müssen die Regulierungsbehörde ERSAR und das Umweltministerium den Plänen zustimmen. Die sehen vor, die rund 500 lokalen und regionalen Ämter zusammenzulegen, sodass vier übrig bleiben. In der derzeitigen Konstellation häufe die AdP „jedes Jahr einen Schuldenberg von € 100 Millionen“ an. Der AdP-Chef will innerhalb von 25 Jahren die Schulden abgebaut sehen und die Kommunen verstärkt an den Pflichten und der Restrukturierung beteiligen, um neue rote Zahlen zu vermeiden.

Water games

A possible privatisation of state water company Águas de Portugal (AdP) has recently been received with fierce protests. Since there are “serious financing problems in the areas of water, sewage and waste disposal”, the public utility should first be re-structured,” said AdP president Afonso Lobato de Faria. This implies adjustments to consumer prices. By 2014, at the latest, prices will gradually fall in some cities and go up in others, during a five-year period. Das schwedische Einrichtungshaus IKEA hat einen Vertrag mit der portugiesischen Porzellan-Manufaktur Vista Alegre unterzeichnet. Die 190 Jahre alte Nobelmarke wird für IKEA exklusives Essgeschirr produzieren, dessen Design teils den Vorgaben aus Schweden folgen und teils eine neue, moderne Porzellanlinie mit portugiesischen Motiven begründen soll. Außerdem kündigte IKEA an, dass sich ab Spätherbst Interessenten für einen von 300 Arbeitsplätzen im neuen Möbelmarkt in der Algarve bewerben können. In Loulé, nahe der Autobahnzufahrt, wird demnächst der erste Spatenstich getan. IKEA will dort im Herbst 2014 eröffnen. Personalmanagerin Catarina Tendeiro erklärte, über Bewerbungen für einen konkreten Arbeitsplatz, die sich nicht immer erfüllten, hätten Bewerber aus Portugal auch schon den Weg zu einem Arbeitsplatz im Ausland gefunden, sei es in China oder Japan, Australien oder den USA.

IKEA made in Portugal

Swedish furniture company IKEA has signed a contract with Portuguese porcelain manufacturer Vista Alegre. The 190-year-old luxury brand will produce exclusive tableware for IKEA, the design of which will partly follow guidelines from Sweden and partly establish a new, modern porcelain range featuring Portuguese motifs. IKEA has also announced that job applicants can apply for one of 300 jobs at its new furniture shop in the Algarve from late autumn. Building work on the new site in Loulé, close to the motorway exit, should begin at any moment. IKEA wants to open here in autumn 2014. Ikea Model

M etropol Par asol Da s n e u e A rc h ite k tu r -H i g h li g ht i n S e vi ll a Eines der bedeutendsten und aufsehenerregendsten Gebäude Südeuropas liegt gar nicht weit entfernt von der Algarve: in Sevilla, der wunderbar lebhaften Hauptstadt Andalusiens, die alleine wegen ihrer großen Baudenkmäler immer einen Ausflug wert ist. Die Stadt war mutig und gesellte der Kathedrale und den anderen Architekturhighlights ein neues Geschwister hinzu. Nun steht Metropol Parasol majestätisch auf der Plaza de la Encarnación – einem großen Platz inmitten der Altstadt von Sevilla. Über viele Jahre lag der Platz quasi brach und diente den Anwohnern und Touristen nur als unattraktiver Parkplatz und Busstation. Ursprünglich war die Plaza seit Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts ein Marktplatz, der zu Teilen bis in die 1970er Jahre betrieben wurde. Bereits in den 80er Jahren gab es Beschlüsse für ein neues Marktgebäude, das mit einer Tiefgarage unterkellert werden sollte. Baubeginn war dann aber erst Anfang der 90er Jahre und die Arbeiten wurden sehr bald gestoppt als bemerkenswerte archäologische Funde bei den Aushubarbeiten entdeckt wurden. Der Fokus richtete sich nach der aufregenden Freilegung und Bergung der archäologischen Reste aber wieder auf die Frage, wie die Stadt mit diesem letzten leeren innerstädtischen Platz solcher Größe umgehen sollte. Der Berliner Architekt Jürgen Mayer H. legte einen abenteuerlichen Entwurf einer riesigen Schirmkonstruktion vor, die dazu dient, den Menschen auf dem öffentlichen Platz Schatten zu spenden und die gleichzeitig eine spektakuläre Bühne für Open Air Veranstaltungen mit sich bringt. Der Bau ist als eine große Dachkonstruktion konzipiert, die wie mehrere Pilze aus

dem Boden sprießt. Leicht abgesenkt unter dem öffentlichen Platz entwarfen J. Mayer H. Architekten eine großzügige Markthalle, in der sich nun die Stände der ansässigen Händler von früher wiederfinden. Neben dem Eingang zum Museum verbirgt sich der Aufzug, mit dem man durch die eine Stütze des Baus hoch hinauf über die Dächer Sevillas fährt und auf dem „Airwalk“ einen spektakulären Blick auf Sevilla genießen kann. The Metropol Parasol now majestically adorns the Plaza de la Encarnación - the large square in the historic centre of Seville. For many years the square had been virtually idle, serving merely as an unattractive car park and bus station for residents and tourists. Originally,

since the mid-19th century, the plaza was a marketplace, which still operated, in part, until the 1970s. A new market building was already planned in the 1980s, featuring underground parking. Construction only began in the early 1990s, however, with work soon stopped when remarkable archaeological discoveries were made during the excavation work. After the exciting excavation and recovery of the archaeological remains, thoughts soon returned to the initial matter of how the city should deal with this last undeveloped urban space. Berlin based architect Jürgen Mayer H. submitted an adventurous design for a giant screen construction, offering shade to the people in the public square while at the same time providing a spectacular stage for open air events. The construction features a large roof structure, sprouting from the ground as if a cluster of mushrooms. Beneath the public square J. Mayer H. Architects designed a generous market hall, giving a new home to the stalls of the local traders of the past. And the lowest floor, a further level of this complex building, hiding in the earth, is now home to the remains of 2000-year-old Seville, within the Archaeological Museum. Next to the museum entrance, a lift takes you above the roofs of Seville, through a pillar of the construction, providing visitors with a spectacular view over Seville on the Airwalk. Gleich hinter der Grenze zu Spanien liegt an der Mündung des Guadiana Flusses der kleine Ort Ayamonte. In Tavira kann die Anlage, die direkt am Fluss Gilão liegt und auch über ein Café (Montags geschlossen) und mehrere Halfpipes für kleine und große Skater verfügt, täglich kostenlos benutzt werden. Trânsito (traffic practice schools) in Lagoa and Tavira, children can learn the first rules of safe behaviour on the road in a playful way. The Lagoa site is located near the auditorium. Bicycles in different sizes, tricycles, pedal cars and electric motorbikes as well as helmets are available free of charge. The driving school is open Saturdays 9.30am-1pm and 2.30pm-5pm. The Tavira site, which is located right next to the River Gilão and also features a café (closed on mondays) and several halfpipes for skaters, can be used daily free of charge, however you have to pay to hire of a pedal car.

Masken spielen die Hauptrolle, aus Tierknochen oder Pappmaché, andere klobig aus rauem Holz gehauen oder filigran geschnitzt und kunstvoll bemalt: Vom 9. bis 12. Mai wird die Lissabonner Unterstadt zur Bühne für das Festival der Iberischen Masken (FIMI). Zur großen Parade am 11.5. gehören Kostüme und Performance, sonore Rhythmen, die Musik nicht genannt werden wollen, Trommeln, Dudelsäcke, zweckentfremdetes landwirtschaftliches Gerät und Instrumente, für die es in anderen Kulturen keine Entsprechung gibt. Die Maskierten ziehen die Passanten gerne in ihr rituelles Spiel hinein und auch wenn die so unvermittelt Vereinnahmten nicht so recht wissen, wie ihnen geschieht, machen schon bald alle mit. Tanz, uralte Riten aus dem Norden Portugals und Spaniens – all dies erinnert auf den ersten Blick ein wenig an die alemannische Fasnacht oder an keltische Wren Boys. Doch zwischen Terreiro do Paço und Rossio kommt der Winter-Kehraus als (be‑)rauschender Frühlingskarneval, beim Defilée in den Straßen, an den Marktständen, wo Besucher mit Spezialitäten und Souvenirs aus Iberiens Norden versorgt werden und bei den fulminanten Konzerten am Abend, alles Open Air. Die teilnehmenden Gruppen sind allesamt Enthusiasten, die sich ein Jahr lang auf das FIMI vorbereiten und deren einziger Lohn die Freude und die Neugier sind, die sie mit ihrem ungewöhnlichen und ansteckend fröhlichen Spektakel wecken. Ein Tipp: Am Ende der Parade unbedingt in der Nähe der Gruppen bleiben; nach kurzer Verschnaufpause verfallen die kostümierten und musizierenden Botschafter ihrer Regionen meist wieder in Feierlaune und tanzen und musizieren noch ein Weilchen weiter, ganz allein für sich und die Passanten. o f co lou r an d sou n d Diabolical figures, which appear as if plucked from a distant time, scamper here and there like archaic figures clad in rags or wrapped in straw from head to toe. Masks are centre stage, made of animal bones or paper mâché, others roughly cut from coarse wood or delicately carved and artistically painted: from May 9th to 12th, Lisbon city centre becomes the venue for the Festival of Iberian Masks (FIMI). The big parade on May 11th includes costumes and performances, sonorous rhythms that are difficult to call music, drums, bagpipes, farming equipment and implements used for purposes other than normally intended, for which there is no equivalent in other cultures. People wearing masks like to pull passers-by into their ritual game, and even if those abruptly drawn in do not really know what hit them, everybody soon joins in. Dance, ancient rites from the north of Portugal and Spain - at first glance this is all a little reminiscent of the German Alemannic Carnival or the Celtic Wren Boys. But between Terreiro do Paço and Rossio, winter’s swansong appears as an exhilarating spring carnival, with parades through the streets, and market stalls, where visitors can enjoy food, or browse through souvenirs from Iberia’s north, and with explosive concerts in the evening, all in the open air. Participating groups are all enthusiasts, preparing for the FIMI for a whole year. Their only reward is the joy and the curiosity they arouse with their unusual and contagiously cheerful spectacle. Our tip: be sure to stay close to the groups at the end of the parade as, after a short breather, the costumed and music-playing ambassadors for their regions tend to get into the celebratory spirit again, dancing and playing music for a little longer, just for themselves and passers-by. Ristorante Grissino Zuerst die schlechte Nachricht: Nach 12 erfolgreichen Jahren schließt das kleine gemütliche Grissino gegenüber der Post in Almancil Ende dieses Monats für immer seine Pforten. Und jetzt die gute... Dann bezieht das jüngst von der italienischen Botschaft als eines von nur vier in ganz Portugal mit dem Qualitätssiegel Ospitalità Italiana-Ristoranti Italiani nel Mondo ausgezeichnete Restaurant nämlich das nahe gelegene ehemalige Nelitos, und dort geht die Party erst richtig los! Auf 500m 2 Fläche entsteht hier mit Restaurant, Pizzeria, Gartenterrasse und Lounge Bar ein italienisches Paradies, dessen Eröffnung die zahlreichen treuen Kunden kaum erwarten können. Diese lassen sich seit Jahren beim preiswerten 3-Gänge Mittagsmenü oder beim Abendessen à la carte mit Freuden von den kulinarischen Köstlichkeiten der Familie Lombardo verführen. Angefangen hat für diese alles in Berlin, wo Pietro sich 1979 seinen lange gehegten Wunsch nach einem eigenen Restaurant erfüllte. Seine aus Madeira stammende Gattin Marolina aber konnte ihre portugiesischen Wurzeln nicht vergessen und so zog das Ehepaar mit ihrem jüngsten Sohn Andrea an die Algarve und eröffnete 2001 das Grissino in Almancil. Andrea stellte bereits in jungen Jahren fest, dass sich die Leidenschaft für gute italienische Küche auf ihn vererbt hatte. Um seine eigene Note in den Familienbetrieb zu bringen, ging er im Alter von 17 Jahren nach Italien und dort bei fünf verschiedenen namhaften Sterne-Köchen in die Lehre. Das Ergebnis dieser Zeit könnte besser nicht schmecken. Seit nunmehr fünf Jahren ist Andrea fester Bestandteil des Restaurants und auch er ist voller Vorfreude auf diesen neuen Schritt in der langjährigen Erfolgsgeschichte der Familie Lombardo. Ein Highlight, auf das er sich besonders freut, sind die einmal im Monat stattfindenden Themenabende mit lokalen und eigens dafür aus Italien angereisten Gastköchen, die die Gäste mit ihren Porcini, Trüffel oder Risotto Kreationen verwöhnen werden. The Grissino story began in Berlin, where Pietro fulfilled his long-time dream of opening his

own restaurant in 1979. His Madeiran wife Marolina was unable to resist the call of her Portuguese roots and so the couple moved to the Algarve together with their youngest son Andrea, opening the Grissino in Almancil in 2001. Andrea knew from a tender age that he had inherited the passion for good Italian cooking and so, to bring his own flair to the family restaurant, he left for Italy at the age of 17, training under five renowned chefs. The results are delicious indeed. For the past five years, Andrea has been an integral part of the restaurant, and cannot wait to start this new chapter in Lombardo family culinary story. Ingredients: Serves 4 2 aubergines Strained tomatoes (passata) Basil Grated mozzarella Freshly grated Parmesan cheese Salt & pepper

Zubereitung: Auberginen in Scheiben schneiden, in Mehl wenden und frittieren.

Method: Slice the aubergines, roll in flour and fry.

Passata zusammen mit dem Basilikum kochen und mit Salz und Pfeffer abschmecken. Das Ganze in der Reihenfolge Tomatensauce, Auberginen, geriebener Käse in abwechselnden Schichten in eine Auflaufform füllen und bei 180˚C im Backofen backen, bis der Käse goldbraun ist.

Cook the passata along with the basil and season with salt and pepper. In a baking dish arrange the ingredients in alternating layers, starting with the tomato sauce, followed by a layer of aubergine, and then grated cheese and repeat. Bake in the oven at 180˚C until the cheese is golden brown.. Enjoy your meal!

Man erkennt sofort den diesen Platz durchziehenden Stil von perfekten, tiefgrünen Spielbereichen, die im scharfen Kontrast zu der trockenen, aber gepflegten Umgebung stehen. Wann immer man über diesen Platz redet, kommt man unweigerlich auf das Präzisionskonzept zu sprechen. Seen, Bäche, Felsen und wüstengleiche Flächen bilden zahlreiche Hindernisse, die es zu vermeiden gilt. Und dann erst die Bunker, die ärgerlicherweise hervorragend jedes Ziel, das man erreichen will, beschützen. Kurz – eine Herausforderung.

Aus der Gesamtperspektive betrachtet unterteilt sich der Platz in drei Abschnitte. Der erste, die Löcher 1 bis 3, erstreckt sich über das abschüssige Gelände östlich des Clubhauses. Das Par-3 zweite Loch fordert den Spieler mit seiner Abwärtsbeschleunigung und seinem bestens verteidigten Grün, während das dritte Loch verschiedene Kombinationen von Präzision und Länge verlangt. Auf dem Hügel angekommen geht es hinunter ins Tal zum zweiten Abschnitt des Layouts, wo das Wasser eine Schlüsselrolle spielt. Die Löcher 4 bis 10 und später 16 bis 18 nehmen verschiedene Positionen in dem weitläufigen Tal ein, fließen seine sanften Hänge hinauf oder hinunter oder besetzen seinen hügeligen Boden, wo das Wasser ungenaues Spiel umgehend bestraft. Auf der anderen Seite des Tals, in Richtung der höher gelegenen Autobahn, steigt das Gelände steil an, was dem Platz eine neue Dimension verleiht. Dieser dritte Abschnitt bietet eine ausgezeichnete Aussicht über das Resort und zeigt seine wahre Dimension, indem es den Golfer noch mehr fordert und mit vielen Überraschungen und wenig Platz für Fehler aufwartet. Developing over the dry terrain of Amendoeira, through its more undulating section, the Oceânico Faldo Course is one of the region’s most recent courses, having opened in 2008. Its youth does not detract from its appeal, however, and in just five years the course has matured surprisingly well to merge into the landscape, while at the same time gaining an excellent reputation as one of Portugal’s top-ten courses.The Faldo

reveals how unlike the flat, parkland style Christy O’Connor it is from the very first hole. The immaculate par-4 first is a picture to behold as you stand on the elevated tee, looking uphill towards the distant green. Immediately you can see the style running right through this course, with pristine, deepgreen playing areas contrasting with the arid, yet well-kept surroundings. Whenever this course is talked about the conversation always returns to the concept of accuracy. What with lakes, streams, rocks and desert-like clearings, there are many obstacles you’ll be hoping to avoid. And we haven’t even mentioned the bunkers yet, which do an annoyingly good job of protecting every target you’re trying to reach. In a word – challenging. From an overall perspective the course splits into three distinct sections. The first, holes one to three, develop on the sloping land to the east of the clubhouse. Of these the par3 second defies with its downhill trajectory and heavily defended green, while the third demands varying combinations of precision and length. Up over the hill and we head down into the valley for the second section of the layout, with water a key component. Holes 4 to 10 and later 16 to 18, take up varying positions throughout this sweeping vale, flowing up and down its gentle slopes, or occupying its undulating floor, where water is particularly punishing to miscalculated play. On the other side of the valley, heading up towards the motorway, the terrain rises steeply adding a new dimension to the course. This third section, offering excellent views across the resort and revealing its true dimension, tests the golfer further, with plenty of surprises and little margin for error. The par-5 13th is enormous. But what most excites about this course, beyond its variety, its great condition, and its need for intelligent guesswork and strategies, is the urge you have at the end to play it again, and Andrew Lang again.

Staub, Schmutz und Spannung an der Algarve

Rally de Portugal 2013

ereits zum dritten Mal in ihrer Karriere haben Sébastien Ogier und Beifahrer Julien Ingrassia die Portugal-Rallye gewonnen, die zwischen dem 11. und 14. April in Portugal, mit Etappen bei Loulé und Silves, stattfand. Zudem haben sie mit ihrer großartigen Leistung durch alle Etappen einen beeindruckenden dritten Sieg in Folge für Volkswagen Motorsport in der FIA World Rally Championship errungen. Der letzte Wettkampftag steckte voller Emotionen, da beide Volkswagen-Piloten, Ogier und Jari-Matti Latvala, mehrfach von mechanischen Problemen aufgehalten wurden, die ihre Positionen gefährdeten. Bis zum letzten Tag schien sich Volkswagen auf dem direkten Weg zu den beiden ersten Plätzen zu befinden, dann aber sorgten Ogier mit einer gerissenen Kupplung und Latvala mit einem kaputten Vorderachsgetriebe für Dramatik in der Gesamtwertung. Der finnische VW Fahrer verlor über eine Minute und wechselte Positionen mit einem anderen Finnen, Mikko Hirvonen, der mit seinem Citroën DS3 WRC in der Gesamtwertung schließlich auf dem zweiten Platz landete. Auf Zweiradantrieb beschränkt ruckelte sich Latvala durch den Rest der Etappe und verlor dabei zusätzliche 3

Minuten, aber als selbst sein dritter Platz in Gefahr war, wurde er von den VW-Mechanikern unterstützt, die VW so zum ersten doppelten Treppchen verhalfen. Dani Sordo, der in den ersten beiden Tagen wirklich gut gefahren ist und Spitzenpositionen besetzte, hatte am dritten Tag der Rallye einen Unfall und landete schließlich auf Platz 12, mit mehr als 30 Minuten Abstand zum Sieger. Die Chancen auf eine Rückkehr der Rallye im nächsten Jahr stehen eher schlecht, da FIA und die ACP (Veranstalter der Rallye) diese Gerüchten zufolge in Portugals Norden verlegen wollen. Volkswagen’s pilots, Ogier and Jari-Matti Latvala, had mechanical problems with their cars, putting their positions at risk. Up until the last day, Volkswagen seemed on track to take the first two places, but Ogier with a slippery clutch and Latvala with a broken front differential pumped up the drama of the overall classification. The Finn from VW lost over a minute and as a result switched positions with another Finn, Mikko Hirvonen, who finished in overall second in his Citroën DS3 WRC. Latvala limped through the rest of the stage stuck with two-wheel drive, losing an extra three minutes, but, as his third place was also now at risk, the VW mechanics pooled their resources to ensure VW’s first double podium. Dani Sordo, who drove really well in the first days and featured amongst the fastest drivers, had an accident on the third day of the rally, finishing 12th, 30 minutes behind the winner. The chances of the rally returning to the Algarve next year are scarce as rumour has it that the FIA and the ACP (the rally’s organiser) plan to move it to the north of Portugal. or 25 Jahren kamen Sandie Croft und Ray Charsley an die Algarve und seit dem begeistern sie mit ihren unterschiedlichen Musikvarianten ein breites Publikum. Sandie begann ihre Musikkarriere in den 70ern. Als Teenager erlernte sie Gitarre und Gesang und trat in den Clubs, Bars und Kneipen ihres Heimatortes Essex und später u.a. im bekannten Kings Country Club in London auf. Sie coverte angesagte Stücke oder begleitete mit ihrer Stimme leichte Dinnerdance-Musik. Ray wurde in Südlondon geboren und lernte als Kind bei der Salvation Army Trompete zu spielen. Mit 15 Jahren wurde er bereits Bandmitglied bei „The Erstwhile Few“ einer in London ansässigen Popband. Er spezialisierte sich auf Gitarre und Gesang. 4 Jahre später wurde Ray vom Gitarristen der Rock&Rollband „The Game“ als Leadsänger abgeworben. Ein starkes Managment verhalf ihnen zu Liveund Fernsehauftritten sowie einer Plattenaufnahme. Ray schrieb die B-Seite „Gotta wait“, die Single erreichte Platz 36 in den UK Charts. Danach gründete er die Musikcomedy-Show „Sweet Illusion“, mit der er drei Platten aufnahm und die bei TV‘s Pebble Mill und in der Royal Albert Hall zu sehen waren. Sandie und Ray begegneten sich 1979. „Wegen unserer gemeinsamen Passion zu Käsekuchen und Curry beschlossen wir nunmehr gemeinsam durchs Leben zu gehen und als Duo Karriere zu machen“, so Ray. Mit Cabaret- und Theatershows reisten sie durch England, bevor Sandie sich Mitte der 80er entschied, klassischen Gesang zu erlernen. Sie studierte an der High Melton Music School um danach für 2 Spielzeiten die Sopranstimme an der York Opera zu singen. Im Oktober 1988 kamen die beiden an die Algarve und gingen hier ihrer Musikleidenschaft weiter nach. Von privat sowie renommierten Bars und Hotels wie z.B. dem Tivoli Hotel Algarve in Lagos wurden sie regelmäßig gebucht. Als 32

Duo Saratoga feierten sie mit einer Country- und Westernshow auch in der U.K. Erfolge. Zu dieser Zeit begeisterte sich Sandie für Country Line Dancing und belegte den 2. Platz bei den Weltmeisterschaften in Southhampton. 2009 begann für sie die „bewegendste“ Zeit an der Algarve. Als „The Teds“ rockten sie mit Luís Hilario (Bass), Eddie Münz (Schlagzeug) und Matt Laster (Saxophon) die hiesigen Bühnen Mit typischen Outfits und stilechter Performance spiegelten sie den Rock‘n Roll der 50er Jahre und die Rockabilly-Stimmung sehr erfolgreich wider. Seit dem letzten Jahr sind die beiden etwas ruhiger geworden, spielen mit ihrem re-etablierten Saraband Duo, dessen Name sich von den ersten beiden Buchstaben ihrer Vornamen ableitet und Bachs Sarabande zum Vorbild hatte, überwiegend Chilout-Jazz. Man kann ihnen u.a. donnerstags in der Fortaleza in Praia da Luz und freitags im Resaurant Chrissy‘s in Lagoa zuhören. Ausserdem begleiten sie jeden Sonntagmittag im Fortaleza die „Easy Street Jazz Band“, die aus Chris Atcherly (Gitarre), Graham Roberts (Keybord & Piano), Sandie Croft (Gesang), José Ribeiro (Schlagzeug), Luís Hilario (Doppelbass), Roger Clark (Trombone) und Ray Charsley (Trompete) besteht. years ago Sandie Croft and Ray Charsley came to the Algarve, having since then thrilled a broad audience with their different styles of music. Sandie began her music career in the 1970s. As a teenager, she learned to play the guitar and how to sing, before performing in the clubs, bars and pubs of Essex and then later in the famous Kings Country Club, among others. At the time she would cover popular hits and provided the vocals for light dinner dance music. Ray was born in South London and at the age of nine learned to play the trumpet in the Salvation Army. At 15 he was already a member of “The Erstwhile Few”, a London-based pop group. He specialised in guitar and vocals. Four years later Ray was recruited as lead singer by the guitarist of rock & roll band “The Game”. The band had strong management, organising live gigs and television appearances, and the recording of an album. Ray wrote the B-side “Gotta wait”, the single reached 36 in the UK charts. Then he founded the music comedy show “Sweet Illusion”, for which he recorded three albums and with which he performed on TV’s Pebble Mill and at the Royal Albert Hall. Sandie and Ray met in 1979. “Thanks to our shared passion for cheesecake and curry we decided from then on to spend their lives together and perform as a duo,” says Ray. They travelled through England with cabaret and theatre shows before Sandie decided to study classical singing at the High Melton Music School in the mid 1980s, to then sing soprano for two seasons with York Opera. In October 1988 they moved to the Algarve, where their pas-

sion for music continued. They were regularly booked by private people or renowned bars and hotels, such as the Tivoli Hotel Algarve in Lagos. As Duo Saratoga they performed a country and western show, with which they also enjoyed success in the UK. Sandie was a fan of Country Line Dancing at that time and came second at the world championships in Southampton. In 2009 their time as rock and rollers began. As “The Teds”, joined by Luís Hilario (bassist), Eddie Münz (drummer) and Matt Laster (saxophonist), they have rocked many local venues. With their authentic outfits and performance they successfully reproduced the rock’n’roll of the 1950s and rockabilly tunes. Since last year the couple have calmed down a little, playing mainly chillout jazz as the re-established Saraband Duo, the name of which comes from the first two letters of their first names and was modelled on Bach’s Sarabande. You can listen to them Thursdays in the Fortaleza in Praia da Luz and in Chrissy’s Restaurant in Lagoa on Fridays. Algarve-Bollywood Bollywood Algarve Das indische Filmproduktions-Unternehmen „Real Image“ wird in Portimão sein Hauptquartier für die geplante Erweiterung der Filmtätigkeit in Europa aufschlagen. Die Vorarbeiten für den Kooperationsvertrag des Spezialisten für digitales Kino aus der südostindischen Stadt Chennai und „CinePicture Portugal“ (www.pictureportugal.com) dauerten vier Jahre. „Picture Portugal“-Chef Luís Marreiros präsentierte die Pläne für Filmstudios und einen später zu entwickelnden Medienpark an der Portimão Arena und schwärmt von der „Symbiose der weltgrößten Filmproduktions-Nation und unserer Region mit Landschaften, die zu Europas schönsten und vielgestaltigsten gehören“.

Die Algarve biete „alte Kastelle, Wüste, grüne Landschaften, Felsen oder auch belebte Straßen, alles nur wenige Kilometer voneinander entfernt“. Von Portimão aus will die indische Filmfirma auch die Postproduktion und die Vermarktung ihrer Filme in Europa vorantreiben sowie mit portugiesischen und weiteren europäischen Partnern Spielfilme vor der Algarve-Kulisse drehen. Für die Region bedeute der neue Partner saisonunabhängige Arbeitsplätze. Kino sei eine sehr reale wirtschaftliche Größe mit langfristigen Auswirkungen, sagte Marreiros und erinnerte daran, dass die Regierung Australiens gerade umgerechnet fast elf Millionen Euro zahlte, um den Zuschlag als Drehort und Kulisse für das Remake des Jules-Verne-Klassikers „20.000 Meilen unter dem Meer“ zu erhalten. But how can the return on cultural foundation work be measured, economist Augusto Mateus asks. “Through the number of visitors to an opera or exhibition? Through the relationship between subsidies and direct income?” Economy is “not just the journey from raw material to finished product, but a blend of many factors”. If every foundation’s activity were to be first examined on its economic potential, its socially relevant aspect withers. Many academic foundations will be dissolved too. Those threatened include the Algarve University’s foundation for development of regional science and technology. The state’s withdrawal affects other institutions in the region: the Fundação António Aleixo in Loulé, which has been fighting “inequality and social hardship in the city for the past two decades” has escaped closure, but loses tax bonuses. The Fundação Pedro Ruivo sustainably provides high quality cultural events for the Algarve, but loses one third of its government subsidies. As do the nationwide active Fundação Mário Soares for political education and Portuguese international medical aid organisation AMI. Although the individual subsidy amounts are usually small, in some cases these small amounts make up more than 95 per cent of the foundation’s total budget. This is the case of the Fundação Odemira, for the reintegration of unemployed people, which now finds itself on the verge of extinction. The axing of subsidies mainly affects work contents and materials, as many foundations rely on volunteers for the majority of their commitments. Volunteers give ten hours or more per week. No organisation could pay this, no matter how low the pay might be. Even if a conversion of voluntary work into hard cash is problematic, experts have long been calling for research into the economic impact of volunteer work.

Willingness to give your time free of charge is pronounced differently in Portugal than in other EU countries, according to a study by the University of Coimbra. About 12% of the population are regularly available for charitable and social collaboration; Europe-wide the figure is double this. Unlike in other countries, the Portuguese show a greater willingness for selective participation than for long-term tasks. According to the study, 2.9% of the Portuguese population take part in a charity event once a month, 6.1% in nonorganised voluntary help and 2.2% are active in neighbourhood help. The great willingness for national events by well-known organisations such as the Banco Alimentar, which collects food for the needy, is particularly striking. Environmental project Limpar Portugal, for the removal of waste from forests and beaches, mobilises up to 100,000 volunteers once or twice a year. This shows, that “voluntary work helps to save a lot of money that the state does not have to spend on the cleaning of public areas”, say the organisers. Henrietta Bilawer

Verantwortung Responsibility Eine schwarze Liste des Justiz-Ministeriums verzeichnet über 100 Kreditanstalten, Kreditverwaltungs-Firmen und einige private Kliniken, die in nur einem Jahr jeweils zwischen 200 und 500 Klagen eingereicht haben und den Gerichten in kurzer Zeit mehrere tausend neue Prozesse einbrachten. Um die Klage-Flut einzudämmen, sollen nun speziell für Beschwerdeführer mit besonders vielen neu eingereichten Klagen die Prozesskosten, Justiz- und VollstreckungsGebühren um die Hälfte erhöht werden. Der Justizminister möchte, dass die Unternehmen selbst Verantwortung für die Bonitäts-Prüfung der Kunden übernehmen, bevor sie Kredite bewilligen. Die Prozesse sollen auch dadurch reduziert werden, dass Firmen demnächst nicht mehr vor Gericht ziehen müssen um dem Finanzamt zu beweisen, dass die Mehrwertsteuer durch den Zahlungsverzug der Kunden noch nicht in der Unternehmens-Kasse angekommen ist. Beim Finanzamt soll der einfache Nachweis genügen, dass der jeweilige Kunde über mindestens 24 Monate in Zahlungsverzug ist. short period. To stem the flood of lawsuits, claimants filing a particularly high number of new lawsuits now face special legal, judicial and enforcement fees, which are to be increased by half. The Minister for Justice wants the companies themselves to take responsibility for credit checks on their customers before granting loans. The cases are also to be reduced by the fact that soon companies will no longer have to go to court to prove to the tax office that IVA (VAT) has never arrived in the company’s coffers due to the default of the customer. The simple proof that the respective customer is in arrears for at least 24 months will be enough for the tax office.
