The Aljezur Sweet Potato Festival Whether they are boiled, baked or grilled, savoury or sweet, served as a traditional or gourmet meal – in Aljezur this month once again everything revolves around the sweet potato. The tuber, with its reddish brown, almost purple skin and yellow flesh lies in third place in the world production of root and tuber crops that are suitable for human consumption, behind the traditional potato (with which it is only distantly related) and manioc. For the inhabitants of Aljezur, the vegetable also ranks very highly. The annual festival is held to pay tribute to the sweet potato as a part of its cultural and gastronomic connection with the community and to show off to visitors the quality of the Aljezur batata doce. Fans of the tasty tubers, and those who are curious about them, are all invited by the producers and the city council to

sample the delicious appetizers, entrees and desserts based on the batata doce. Last year some 40,000 people attended the festival where an astonishing 35 tonnes of sweet potatoes were cooked up! This year, the quality of the local “batata doce de Aljezur” is really being highlighted, because not all sweet potatoes are the same; thanks to the sand layers in the soil and an underlying layer of clay coupled with the local regional climatic conditions, the tubers from Aljezur are so special that they have been officially recognised as a product with a protected designation of origin. Visitors to the festival will certainly find a dish to their liking in at least one of the restaurants taking part. To accompany the festival there is also a wide ranging programme with competitions, cooking demonstrations, concerts and mountain bike tours.

Das Süßkartoffelfestival von Aljezur Ob gekocht, gebacken oder gegrillt, ob herzhaft oder süß, als traditionelles oder Gourmetgericht – in diesem Monat dreht sich in Aljezur wieder alles rund um die Süßkartoffel. Die Knolle mit rötlichbrauner, fast violetter Schale und gelber Frucht liegt nach der traditionellen Kartoffel, mit der sie nur entfernt verwandt ist, und Maniok auf dem dritten Platz der Weltproduktion von Wurzel- und Knollenpflanzen, die zum Verzehr geeignet sind. Auch bei den Bewohnern von Aljezur steht die Pflanze hoch im Kurs. Mit dem jährlichen Festival wollen sie die Süßkartoffel als Teil der kulturellen und gastronomischen Verbundenheit mit der Gemeinde ehren und Besucher von der Qualität der Batata-doce von Aljezur überzeugen. Neugierige und Fans der wohlschmeckenden Knolle sind vom Rathaus und den Produzenten eingeladen, die köstlichen Vorspeisen, Hauptgerichte

und Dessertvariationen rund um die Batata-doce zu probieren. Im letzten Jahr besuchten 40.000 Menschen das Festival, bei dem bemerkenswerte 35 Tonnen Süßkartoffeln zubereitet wurden! Dieses Jahr soll die Qualität der heimischen „Batata-doce de Aljezur” hervorgehoben werden, denn Süßkartoffel ist nicht gleich Süßkartoffel; durch die Sandschichten im Boden und einer darunterliegenden Lehmschicht sowie durch die lokalen Klimabedingungen ist die Knolle von Aljezur so besonders, dass sie offiziell zu einem Produkt mit geschützter Herkunftsbezeichnung ernannt wurde. Besucher des Festivals werden in einem der teilnehmenden Restaurants ganz sicher ein Gericht nach ihrem Geschmack finden. Außerdem wird ein breit gefächertes Rahmenrogramm mit Wettbewerben, Kochvorführungen, Konzerten und Mountainbike-Ausflügen angeboten.

Die „Algarveans Experimental Theatre Group” war mit ihren beiden gefeierten Shows „How The Other Half Loves” im November 2013 und „Robin Hood“ im Frühjahr diesen Jahres, beide aufgeführt im Auditorium Lagoas, überaus erfolgreich auch finanziell. Aus Dankbarkeit beschloss die Gruppe, einen Teil der Einnahmen zu spenden; sie kauften acht dringend benötigte Rollstühle sowie zahlreiche Matratzen für das „Centro Popular de Lagoa”, eine Einrichtung zur Unterstützung älterer Mitbürger. Mit dem neuen Programm „Going Dutch” sind die Algarveans zurück auf der Bühne. Die unterhaltsame „erwachsene” Komödie handelt von sexuellen Spannungen und der Angst vor dem Altern. The James Brown Story This is a film about the eventful life story of the “Godfather of Soul”. James Brown is played by Chadwick Boseman, the director is Tate Taylor. The biopic shows audiences Brown’s journey from his poverty-striken childhood to his rise in the 20th century music business. Even though from an early age he was given every encouragement to strive for a career as a great artist, the young James Brown went off the rails to begin with and ended up in prison at the age of 16. It was there he discovered his true love of music. After his release, the young man quickly started to make a name for himself by joining a

DA TERRA E DO MAR… Exhibition Extended Since May 24th, the artists of the Algarve Artists Network (AAN) have been exhibiting their work with the title “Da Terra e do Mar” at the Museum of Portimão. The well-known, popular museum celebrated its sixth birthday in May this year and, to mark the occasion, the members of the AAN were invited to showcase their work. As a result of its enormous success, the “Da Terra e do Mar” exhibition has now been extended until 31st December. All the installations and paintings owe their inspiration to life

in the Algarve; as shown by the translation of the exhibition’s title “Land and Sea”. Feira do São Martinho Just as every year, the Saint Martin’s Festival in Portimão will be celebrated with a traditional market whose roots go back to 1662 and which provides plenty of amusement in the city for the ten days it is held. Visitors can find traditional exhibitions of ceramics, toys, jewellery, textiles and shoes, to name but a few. There are typical rides such as carousels, a Ferris wheel and bumper cars which will particularly delight the younger visitors. And to round it all off, there are funfair treats, typical for the season, such as roasted chestnuts, doughnuts, popcorn, hot dogs, pão com chouriço and frango piripiri.

Wie in jedem Jahr wird das Sankt Martinsfest in Portimão mit einem ursprünglichen Markt gefeiert, der bereits seit 1662 ausgetragen wird und die Stadt für zehn Tage vergnüglich stimmt. The Rotary Club Porches International is patron of this Christmas market which features about 80 exhibitors. The gallery owner Rolf Osang is providing his gallery free of charge, so that the money paid for the stands will benefit the Banco Alimentar do Algarve charity. The “tree of love”, which is meant to appeal to people’s generosity, serves a good cause. From November 17th, small packages can be put under the big Christmas tree in the gallery, which are then passed on to disabled´people at selected, local homes. Der Rotary Club Porches International ist Schirmherr dieses Weihnachtsmarkts mit ca. 80 Ausstellern. Der Galerist Rolf Osang stellt dafür seine Galerie kostenlos zur Verfügung, so dass der für die Stände bezahlte Obulus der Wohltätigkeitsorganisation Banco Alimentar do Algarve zugute kommt. Auch der „Baum der Liebe”, der an die Hilfsbereitschaft der Menschen appelliert, dient dem guten Zweck. Ab dem 17. November können kleine Päckchen unter den großen Weihnachtsbaum in der Galerie abgelegt werden, die dann Behinderten ausgewählter lokaler Heime überreicht werden. The team from “Vidalegre“ has rented these housing units until the end of March 2015 and is providing the chance to spend the winter there with supervision. Working together with external care services and physicians, all of whom have been vetted, residents can take advantage of day and residential care, respite care, 24-hour care, an emergency call service, supervised holidays and trial-periods of residence while they are staying there. The “Open Day” provides an opportunity to look at the living spaces and meet the team from “Vidalegre” personally.
