MEDIEVAL FESTIVALS If you want to experience the Middle Ages up close and feel the spirit of that time, make sure you do not miss the famous medieval festivals in the Algarve which draw thousands of visitors from around the world every year Silves The castle of Silves provides the central point for the bustle of the medieval age from the time of the 8th century. The festival extends over the entire area of the old town and offers visitors all sorts of crafts and food stalls in the narrow streets of this historic city. Jugglers, snake charmers, belly dancers and acrobats will be showing off their skills in the many large and small squares. There will also be nobly dressed gentlemen strolling through the streets, followed by beggars and charlatans to add the finishing touch to the incredible atmosphere for which the festival is famous. Visitors can also dress up in medieval costumes which are available from various â&#x20AC;&#x153;royal wardrobesâ&#x20AC;?.

Castro Marim The history of this community is one of the oldest in the Algarve, going back to the time when Romans, Celts and Arabs occupied the territory and built fortresses and castles to defend the country. The castle of Castro Marim, which protected the region, was the scene where many heroic and tragic events were played out and you can still hear the echo of the bloody battles reverberating from the walls. During the Dias Medievais there will be hundreds of artists from Europe, Morocco and Egypt, including jesters, acrobats, fire-eaters, storytellers and snake people, filling the streets of Castro Marim. Medieval music played by troubadours and minstrels will echo along the streets of the picturesque town. For visitors there will be colourful stalls from local merchants and tempting traditional local dishes in the restaurants.

MITTELALTER-FESTIVALS Wer das Mittelalter hautnah erleben und den Geist dieser Zeit spüren möchte, sollte die berühmten Mittelalterfeste der Algarve nicht versäumen, die jährlich zehntausende von Besuchern aus aller Welt anziehen Silves Die Burg von Silves bildet das Zentrum des mittelalterlichen Treibens aus der Zeit des 8. Jahrhunderts. Das Festival erstreckt sich über die gesamte Altstadt und bietet den Besuchern allerlei Handwerks- und Gastronomiestände in den engen Gassen der historischen Stadt. Jongleure, Schlangenbeschwörer, Bauchtän zerinnen und Akrobaten zeigen ihr Können auf den vielen kleinen und großen Plätzen. Nobel gekleidete Herrschaften flanieren durch die Straßen, gefolgt von Bettlern und Scharlatanen und komplettieren so diese unglaubliche Atmos phäre, für die das Fest so berühmt ist. Auch die Besucher können sich in mittelalterliche Gewänder kleiden, die in verschieden „königlichen Garderoben” zur Verfügung stehen.

Castro Marim Die Geschichte dieser Gemeinde ist eine der ältesten in der Algarve und geht zurück in die Zeit, als Römer, Kelten und Araber das Gebiet besetzten und Burgen und Schlösser errichteten, um das Land zu verteidigen. In der Burg von Castro Marim, dem Wächter der Ländereien, spielten sich heroische und tragische Szenen ab und man hört noch heute das Echo der blutigen Schlachten in den Gemäuern. Hunderte von Künstlern und Statisten aus Europa, Marokko und Ägypten, darunter Hofnarren, Akrobaten, Feuerschlucker, Geschichtenerzähler und Schlangenmenschen, füllen an den Dias Medievais die Straßen von Castro Marim. Mittelalterliche Musik von Troubadouren und Minnesängern füllen die Gassen des malerischen Ortes. Dem Besucher bieten sich bunte Stände von lokalen Händlern, die Gastronomie lockt mit traditionellen Gerichten aus der Region.

At the 12th FATT festival in August, the banks of the River Arade will once again echo to the sound of the didgeridoo. Every year it is a colourful event full of activities, concerts, workshops and lectures which bring the Sitio das Fontes Estombar to life. There is dancing, fascinating music and entertainment, but also handicrafts, bars and restaurants, children’s areas and chill-out zones for visitors. A camping area for tents and camper vans is also available. All day long the festival hosts a wide range of workshops and lectures which aim to introduce visitors, in particular the younger ones, to music and dance from around the world. In the evening, there will be a host of charismatic bands taking the stage with their didgeridoos.

Bei der 12. Auflage des FATT-Festivals hallt im August an den Ufern des Arade-Flusses wieder das Echo der Didgeridoos. Es ist ein buntes Festival voller Aktivitäten, Konzerte, Workshops und Vorträge, die die Sitio das Fontes in Estombar zum Leben erwecken. Tanz, aussergewöhnliche Musik und Animation, aber auch Kunsthandwerk, Bars und Restaurants, Kinder- und Chill-out- Bereiche erwarten den Besucher. Auch eine Campingzone für Zelte und Wohnmobile steht zur Verfügung. Die Veranstaltung bietet tagsüber ein breites Spektrum an Workshops und Vorträgen, um vor allem dem jungen Publikum Musik und Tänze aus aller Welt näherzubringen. Am Abend betreten charismatische Bands mit ihrem Didgeridoo die Bühne.

Matsumoto Zoku (Japan) The artists move within the natural flow of sound and energy. They mix sonorous beats with the gentle notes of the halo drum and didgeridoo to create serene and vibrant tones. Their intuitive and unique music has been inspired by their extensive travels as street musicians and, through this, they have managed to create their original and emotional style. Die Künstler bewegen sich im natürlichen Fluss von Klang und Energie. Sie mischen akzentvolle Schläge mit der weichen Note der Halo-Trommel und des Didgeridoo und schaffen so heitere und lebendige Töne. Alejandro Urilá (Spanien) The multi-instrumental musician and composer works with music and instruments from different traditions from all around the world. The musical language he speaks is a mixture of several techniques and his own experiments using instruments such as the Jew’s harp, harmonium, naq qara (kettle drum), algozza (Indian bamboo flute) and the Persian santur (stringed instrument).

Der multi-instrumentale Musiker und Komponist arbeitet mit Musik und Instrumenten aus verschiedenen Traditionen der ganzen Welt. Yemadas (Portugal) This project was conceived by two Portuguese in India in 2011. James Nightingale and Ana Costa toured the world for 10 years, visiting Latin America, Africa and Asia. After being inspired by ancient tribal cultures, they decided to return to Portugal and share these visions and philosophies with other artists. A magical trip through worlds of tradition. Khayalan Trio (Portugal) The trio performs a new concept of contemporary music and combines the creativity and imagination of the three musicians. Allatantou (Portugal) A dance and percussion group, founded in the 70s in Gambia, which has gained a footing in several countries. They have been performing in Portugal since 2006, evoking the traditions and cultures of Africa. A spectacle which leads you into the mythical regions of West Africa with its choreography, mask dances and traditional instruments. Die Tanz- und Percussiongruppe, die in den 70er Jahren in Gambia gegründet wurde und in mehreren Ländern Fuß fasste tritt seit 2006 in Portugal auf und vermittelt die Traditionen und Kulturen Afrikas. Ein Spektakel, das durch die Choreografie, Maskentänze und traditionellen Instrumente in die mythischen westafrikanischen Regionen führt. Adéle & Zalem (Frankreich) Adéle & Zalem’s concept is a challenge. They use the didgeridoo as a rudimentary tool to create dynamic and melodic music. Vibrations, beatbox, bass and voices generate cutting rhythms and get the audience dancing. Das Konzept von Adéle & Zalem ist eine Herausforderung. Los Monkys (Spanien) The group consists of musicians from different backgrounds and is the end result of a troubled generation, always looking for new sounds. The differences in the way they perceive music and the diversity of their influences has transformed itself into a source of inspiration and, with violin, didgeridoo and drums, the artists create an energised music, characterised by its rhythmic complexity. Die Gruppe besteht aus Musikern verschiedener Herkunft und ist das Ergebnis einer unruhigen Generation, immer auf der Suche nach neuen Klängen. Ihre unterschiedlichen Auffassungen von Musik und die Vielfalt ihrer Einflüsse hat sich in eine Quelle der Inspiration vergewandelt. Mit Violine, Didgeridoo und Schlagzeug erzeugen die Künstler eine energetische Musik, die durch ihre rhythmische Komplexität charakterisiert wird.

Señor Marküsen (Spanien) Señor Marküsen embarks on a musical journey with a hypnotic beat. The didgeridoo and percussion form his spaceship. The concert is really a “one-man sound system”, with complex rhythms. Inspired by electronic music, but purely acoustic and very original. Wild Marmalade (Australia) The world´s most energetic didgeridoo dance band. A fusion of typical didgeridoo sounds with a modern dance beat. Based on rhythms from around the world and inspired by the native sounds of their home land, they present uplifting and exciting dance music. The band has worked with Cirque du Soleil in Las Vegas and Montreal and has done 12 tours of Japan, Europe, USA and of course their native Australia. Die weltweit energiegeladenste Didgeridoo-Tanzband mit einer Fusion typischer Didgeridoo-Klänge und modernem Dance-Beat. Gestützt auf Rhythmen aus der ganzen Welt und inspiriert von einheimischen Klängen, präsentieren sie fröhliche und mitreißende Tanzmusik. This year, the fair for handicraft, tourism, agriculture, trade and industry, has a very strong musical accent. Over the whole 10 days, local and national artists will be performing daily on 2 stages, providing a huge musical panorama ranging from Celtic music, flamenco, fado and Latino rhythms to Lusophone music from Angola and Cape Verde and traditional Portuguese music. The street entertainment will also be captivating with its surprising creativity and a joyfulness which will get under your skin; whether it is the Flintstones in their “car” or the crew of a pirate boat who will delight the children and young people, or typical traditional dance and folk dancing from the Algarve to the sound of the accordion and ukulele. In addition, the “aMARaTERRA” is also a part of the fair and this year will cover twice the area, offering agricultural and fishery products from local producers. A wide range of wines, liqueurs, meat and sausage products, confectionery, citrus and dried fruits, herbs, fish, crustaceans and examples of the Algarve’s riches will be on sale at good prices. Finally, the top quality equestrian performances, multimedia presentations, gastronomic offers, exhibitions of native and exotic animals and almost 600 exhibitors from every sector will combine to make the 35th Fatacil once again one of the most successful events this summer. 10

Main Stage Hauptbühne

Die diesjährige Messe für Handwerk, Tourismus, Landwirtschaft, Gewerbe und Industrie setzt sehr auf musikalische Akzente. Während der 10 Tage werden auf 2 Bühnen lokale und nationale Künstler auftreten, die mit keltischer Musik, Flamenco, Fado und Latinorhythmen sowie Lusophonien aus Angola und den Kap Verde und traditioneller portugiesischer Musik für ein breites Spektrum sorgen. Straßenanimation wird durch besondere Kreativität überraschen, sei es mit Familie Feuerstein in ihrem „Flintmobil” oder der Besatzung eines Piratenboots, typisch traditionellen Reigen-und Folkloretänzen der Algarve zu Akkordeon- und Ukuleleklängen. Ferner ist an die Messe die „aMARaTERRA” integriert, die in diesem Jahr auf die doppelte Fläche vergrößert wurde und Landwirtschaftsund Fischereiprodukte von regionalen Herstellern anbietet. Ein reichhaltiges Angebot von Weinen, Likören, Fleisch- und Wurstprodukten, Süßwaren, Zitrus- und Trockenfrüchten, Kräutern, Fisch und Schalentieren sowie weitere lokale Produkte werden zu Vorteilspreisen verkauft. Darüber hinaus werden Reitdarbietungen, Multimedia-Vorführungen, gastronomische Angebote, Präsentation von einheimischen und exotischen Tieren und fast 600 Aussteller aus allen Bereichen die 35. Fatacil erneut zu einem der größten Publikumsmagneten des Sommers machen.

The festival is the biggest summer festival on Portuguese soil, with the main focus being on a wide range of musicians and DJs who will be putting on concerts and live performances on each day on the 3 different stages. In the meanwhile, the event has already attracted more than a million people. The five-day open-air festival takes place at the Herdade da Casa Branca in Zambujeira do Mar and once again this year will be bringing distinguished international artists to the south of the Alentejo. Of course, there is no lack of stalls with handicrafts and, for those who want to stay longer, there is plenty of space for camping with all the necessary hygiene facilities and safety conditions.

Highlights 7th August | 7. August Ellie Goulding Ellie Goulding is seen as one of the most intelligent and competent artists in the pop music industry. Goulding´s songs are sensitive, gentle and tell her own personal tales. Ellie Goulding wird in der Popmusik-Industrie als eine der klügsten und kompetentesten Künstlerinnen gehandelt. John Newman landete mit „Love Me Again“ einen Riesenhit und wurde von den Brit Awards als bester Künstler und für die beste Single nominiert. Tom Odell His classic pop-style melodies sound rich and melancholy; the piano is the star of the show. Tom Odell is one of those artists who never disappoint. Seine Melodien im Bereich des klassischen Pop klingen reich und melancholisch, der Protagonist ist das Klavier. 8th August | 8. August 5:30 The Portuguese hip-hop group 5:30 will be playing live at the festival for the first time. Their debut album has just been released and is already enjoying great acclaim. Die portugiesische Hip-Hop-Gruppe 5:30 wird auf dem Festival ihr erstes Live-Konzert geben. Das Debüt-Album ist gerade erst veröffentlicht und erfreut sich bereits großer Beliebtheit. Rappa Rappa, a band from Brazil, will be there to play their rhythmic reggae and funk with their positive energy which is really addictive.

MEO SUDOESTE Das Festival ist die größte Musikveranstaltung, die auf portugiesischem Boden stattfindet, und konzentriert sich auf ein breites Spektrum von Musikern und DJs, die täglich auf 3 verschiedenen Bühnen Konzerte und Liveacts spielen. Inzwischen wurde die Veranstaltung von mehr als einer Million Menschen besucht. Das fünftägige Festival findet auf der Herdade da Casa Branca bei Zambujeira do Mar statt und bringt auch dieses Jahr wieder hochkarätige internationale Künstler in den Süden des Alentejos. Stände mit Kunsthandwerk dürfen natürlich auch hier nicht fehlen, und wer länger bleiben möchte, findet viel Platz für Camping mit den entsprechenden Hygienebereichen und Sicherheitsbedingungen. Mit Rappa kommt eine Band aus Brasilien angereist, deren positive Energien und rhythmischer Reggae und Funk süchtig machen. 9th August | 9. Selha Sue The young and talented Selah Sue has a fantastic and extraordinary voice with which she sings everything from reggae to soul, pop to dubstep delighting audiences all over the world. Über den Dächern von Tavira

The history of Tavira is exemplified by its extraordinary ‘roof-scape’. Tavira consists of a conglomeration of buildings many of them sheltered beneath terracotta tiles with ornate balustrades and balconies and a huge variety of church spires. Using a distinctive modern style Juli faithfully recreates these unique buildings that span a period of almost 500 years. Remarkably some of them withstood Europe’s strongest earthquake, which took place off the Algarve’s west coast in 1755. Her pictures successfully sum up the town’s present vibrant atmosphere by looking at its past. Juli-Anne regularly takes part in London’s prestigious Affordable Art fair and, in Portugal, is to be found only at the Galleria Côrte-Real.

Die außergewöhnliche Dächer-Landschaft von Tavira veranschaulicht die Geschichte der Stadt am Gilão-Fluss. He is one of England’s most commissioned artists having been contracted by royalty and the British government. His works include the figure of the Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Mother. Philip Jackson’s personal creative works will be on show alongside those of five other international artists at the gallery. Dutch artist Elly Maessen has been living and working in Portugal since 1998. She has exhibited her works in the Algarve many times as well as in Lisbon and abroad. Born in Lisbon in 1933, Colonel Melo Antunes lived in Tavira for 7 years before joining military school. For him, Tavira was a town that he loved very much and visited regularly and where he spent time with friends. He had a military career like his father, served three tours 32

April 1974 die Diktatur stürzte und dem Portugiesischem Volk damit Freiheit und Demokratie zurückgab. Geboren wurde Antunes in Lissabon im Jahr 1933. Bevor er die Militärschule besuchte, lebte er sieben Jahre lang in Tavira - in der Stadt, die er sehr liebte, regelmäßig besuchte und in der er viel Zeit mit Freunden verbrachte. Seine militärische Karriere glich der seines Vaters; er diente in drei Afrikaeinsätzen und stand immer in Verbindung mit der Opposition gegen das Regime. Die Organisation dieser Ausstellung erfolgte in enger Zusammenarbeit zwischen der Stadtverwaltung von Tavira, dem 1. Infanterie-Regiment, dem Verband des 25. Sardine Festival The countdown to this year’s Sardine Festival is up and running and the festival promises to combine the most famous culinary delights of Portimão with entertainment and musical highlights for all ages and tastes. The restaurants taking part, all along the waterfront between the old fish market and the old bridges of Portimão, will be enticing their guests with freshly grilled sardines. These are, of course, the focal point of the 5-day event,

which attracts thousands of visitors. There will also be many exhibitors offering their handicrafts and typical products from the region. Every day from 10 pm, there is live music with José Cid (August 13th), Os Azeitonas (August 14th), Quim Roscas & Zeca Estacionâncio (August 15th), Pau d’Arara (August 16th), Sabrosas Funk and La Plante Mutant (August 17th). The latter will perform a retrospective of different songs from previous Sardine Festivals.
