Racing fans will be getting their money’s worth in Portimão in early September: under its new name Blancpain Sprint Series and with a new format, the racing series for Gran Turismo vehicles returns to the GT3 class in the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve (AIA). The top drivers, in sports cars made by the most prestigious international car manufacturers (including Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche and Lamborghini), will be taking part in some thrilling races – an absolute must for all fans of professional motorsports. Two series will be driven: Sprint and GT. The three existing classes for driver classification PRO, PRO-AM and Gentlemen were extended this year to include the Silver Cup class, in which both drivers are younger than 25. The series in the Autódromo has already reached the ninth and tenth of a total of 14 races. At the time of going to press on 22.8, German racing drivers Maximilian Buhk and Maximilian Götz were occupying first place in the drivers‘ ranking for the Pro Cup class, followed by Harald Proczyk from Austria and 4

Jeroen Bleekemolen from the Netherlands. In the Pro-Am Cup, Marc Basseng from Germany and Alessandro Latif from the UK were first, followed by the Austrians Stefan Halek and Stefan Landmann. And in the Silver Cup, Matteus Lisowski from Poland and Frenchman Vincent Abril were at the top of the drivers’ ranking, followed by the Italians David Fumanelli and Stefano Colombo. In the current team standings, after six of the 14 races, most of the top places are being occupied by Germans. The German team HTP Motorsports was in first place in the Pro Cup, followed by Belgium and Austria. In the Pro-Am Cup too, Germany is ahead with positions one and three, separated by the Austrian team in second place. In the Silver Cup class, the Belgians are in front, followed by the teams from Italy and the UK. The series ends in early November with the Baku World Challenge in Azerbaijan. The Blancpain Sprint Series was launched last year by the SRO Motorsports Group and the Swiss watchmaker Blancpain under the name “FIA GT series” and is the successor to the FIA GT1 World Championships, which were held from 2010 to 2012.

Rennsport-Fans kommen Anfang September in Portimão voll auf ihre Kosten: Unter dem neuen Namen Blancpain Sprint Series und mit neuem Format kehrt die Rennserie für Gran-TurismoFahrzeuge in der Klasse GT3 ins Autódromo Internacional do Algarve (AIA) zurück. In Sportwagen der renommiertesten internationalen Autobauer (darunter Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche und Lamborghini) liefern sich die die besten Fahrer spannende Rennen - ein Muss für alle Freunde des professionellen Motorsports. Gefahren werden zwei Serien: Sprint und GT. Die drei bekannten Klassen nach Fahrereinstufung PRO, PRO-AM und Gentleman wurden in diesem Jahr um die Klasse Silver-Cup erweitert, in der beide Fahrer jünger als 25 Jahre alt sind. Bei den Serien im Autódromo handelt es sich bereits um das neunte und zehnte von insgesamt 14 Rennen. In der Fahrerwertung belegten bei Redaktionsschluss am 22.8. die deutschen Rennfahrer Maximilian Buhk und Maximilian Götz in der Klasse Pro-Cup den ersten Platz, gefolgt von Harald Proczyk aus Österreich und Jeroen Bleekemolen aus den Niederlanden. Im Pro-Am-Cup lagen Marc Basseng aus Deutschland und Alessandro Latif aus Großbritannien vorn, gefolgt von den

Österreichern Stefan Halek und Stefan Landmann. Im Silver-Cup standen in der Fahrerwertung der Pole Matteus Lisowski und der Franzose Vincent Abril an der Spitze, gefolgt von den Italienern David Fumanelli und Stefano Colombo. In der Team-Wertung gingen die Top-Plätze bis jetzt nach sechs von 14 Rennen ebenfalls mehrheitlich an die Deutschen. Das deutsche Team HTP Motorsport stand im Pro-Cup auf Platz 1, gefolgt von Belgien und Österreich. Auch im Pro-Am-Cup liegt Deutschland vorne und belegt Platz eins und drei, dazwischen liegt das Team aus Österreich. In der Klasse Silvercup liegen die Belgier vorn, gefolgt von den Teams aus Italien und Großbritannien. Anfang November endet die Serie im Baku World Challenge in Aserbaidschan. Die Blancpain Sprint Series wurde im vergangenen Jahr unter dem Namen FIA GT Serie von der SRO Motorsports Group und der Schweizer Uhrenmanufaktur Blancpain ins Leben gerufen und gilt als Nachfolger der FIA-GT1-Weltmeisterschaften, die von 2010 bis 2012 ausgetragen wurden.

When it comes to explaining what Flamenco is, there is a lot more involved than just some graceful twists and turns and energetic stamping of the feet. Flamenco is passionate and seductive, a mysterious fire that has been burning for five hundred years and has its roots deep in Andalusia. The emotional and agonised sounds of Flamenco were for a long time shunned there too in the same way as were those who invented Flamenco, the “gypsies“. For centuries they were oppressed and persecuted. At first, they would only express their feelings of despair and anger just in their singing. The dance and guitar accompaniment only became important later.

Möchte man Flamenco beschreiben, reicht es nicht aus, anmutige Drehungen und energisches Fußstampfen als einzige Charaktereigenschaften zu nennen. Flamenco ist leidenschaftlich und verführerisch, ein geheimnisvolles Feuer, das schon seit fünfhundert Jahren brennt und dessen Wurzeln in Andalusien liegen. Lange Zeit wurden dort die emotionalen und schmerzvollen Klänge ebenso abgelehnt wie ihre Urheber, die „Gitanos“. Über Jahrhunderte hinweg wurden sie unterdrückt und verfolgt. Ihre Gefühle von Verzweiflung und Wut drückten sie zunächst nur im Gesang aus. Tanz und Gitarrenbegleitung gewannen erst später an Bedeutung.

This fusion between drama, dance and music has an elemental dramatic power, one which you feel and experience intensely as you watch. There are over 50 variations of this art form, comprising various palos (dance techniques), but the Flamenco thrives essentially on the personal improvisation of the artists themselves and what they express spontaneously and emotionally during a performance.

Die Fusion zwischen Schauspiel, Tanz und Musik hat eine elementare Dramatik, die man beim Zuschauen intensiv erlebt und fühlt. Es gibt über 50 Varianten dieser Kunst, bei der verschiedene palos (Tanztechniken) angewandt werden, doch hauptsächlich lebt der Flamenco von der persönlichen Improvisation der Künstler und deren spontaner emotionalen Offenbarung während der Aufführung.

CENTENNIAL CELEBRATIONS Throughout this year residents of São Brás will be celebrating an important landmark in their town’s history. Exactly 100 years ago it became an independent town. A new play, ‘Rags to Riches’, recounts the story of one of the significant people who led to this change of status. Miguel Dias helped transform the hamlet into a town. His business brought prosperity to the area, turned him into a well-known figure and made him a personal fortune. A colourful character who charmed the ladies and led a luxurious lifestyle in the mansion he built, which is now São Brás Museum. ‘Rags to Riches’ tells the story of Miguel’s remarkable life and of his unexpected death. It

was written in rhyming verse by Carolyn Kain and there is a parallel shorter version related simultaneously in Portuguese. Brought to life by the Aperitivo Performance Group, like many of their unusual productions, it is progressive theatre presented in two languages with a chorus of workers, musical interludes and a cast of 13 directed by Gertrud Dürnholz. HUNDERTJAHRFEIER In diesem Jahr feiern die Bewohner von São Brás de Alportel einen wichtigen Meilenstein in der Geschichte ihrer Stadt. Vor genau 100 Jahren wurde sie zu einem unabhängigen Bezirk. Das Theaterstück „Rags to Riches“ widmet sich Miguel Dias de Andrade, einem bedeutenden und einflussreichen Unternehmer in der Korkindustrie, der das damalige Niemandsland zu einer erfolgreichen Region machte und in dem jetzigen Museum von São Brás de Alportel lebte. „Rags to Riches“ erzählt die Geschichte von Miguels bemerkenswertem mondänen Leben und seinem unerwarteten Tod. Magic in the Moonlight

Realistically captured on canvas by Juli-Anne Coward. Using a distinctive modern style, she faithfully recreates these unique buildings that span a period of almost 500 years. Remarkably, some of them withstood Europe’s strongest earthquake, which

took place off the Algarve’s west coast in 1755. Juli-Anne regularly takes part in London’s prestigious Affordable Art fair and, in Portugal, is to be found only at the Galleria Côrte-Real. In 2012, the artist John Lamonby spent four months in and out of hospital in Truro, Cornwall and then the IPO hospital in Lisbon. Observing staff and patients, he watched the spark between life and death, determination and humanity. His experience evolved into a series of impressions expressed as brilliant paintings. They portray nothing less than the will to live. John’s long career began in the wild and glorious landscapes of Northumberland where he lived and trained as an artist. He started by producing realistic depictions of the countryside, but then his painting gradually evolved from being representational pictures to depicting more powerful impressions. Popular with art collectors across the globe, his paintings have been exhibited widely, including at London’s Mall Galleries who champion new contemporary art by living artists.

Im Jahr 2012 verbrachte der Künstler John Lamonby vier Monate innerhalb und ausserhalb der Krankenhäuser von Truro, Cornwall und dem IPO Hospital in Lissabon. Er beobachtete bei Personal und Patienten den Grad zwischen Leben und Tod, Entschlossenheit und Menschlichkeit. Seine Erfahrung entwickelte sich zu einer Reihe von Eindrücken, die er in brillanten Bildern ausdrückt. Sie enthalten nichts anderes als den Willen zu leben. John lebte in den wilden und herrlichen Landschaften von Northumberland, wo seine lange Karriere als Künstler begann. Seine realistischen Darstellungen lassen seine Gemälde von abstrakten Bildern zu aussagekräftigen Impressionen werden. Seine Arbeiten ziehen das Interesse vieler Kunstsammler aus aller Welt auf sich und wurden unter anderem in London’s Mall Galleries ausgestellt, die Spezialisten für neue zeitgenössische Kunst lebender Künstler sind.

The second part of the exhibition is dedicated to the artists with whom Volker Huber worked for many years. Each of them has written a personal message which will be shown next to his works. The Vila Vita Biergarten in Porches will be holding an Oktoberfest again this year. The staff will be wearing traditional costume, there will be a vivid, Bavarian backdrop and a real maypole for the many guests to enjoy. With many German specialties on the menu and of course fresh Erdinger, one of Germany’s most popular beers, it will once again be a proper festival. Live music will be provided by the Munich band Gaudiblosn. Amongst the highlights on the menu, they will be offering the best of Bavarian cuisine. Among other things they will be serving up sausages with classic side dishes, a Bavarian snack platter with pretzels, Bavarian cream cheese, cold cuts, pickles and chives on bread, pork shank with crackling, cabbage and potato salad and of course apple strudel. The staff will be happy to explain anything you need to know about the various specialties, the meat will be of the highest quality from Vila Vita’s very own butcher. The festival is great fun for the family with the children’s playground in the adjacent garden.
