Reise in die Vergangenheit

Das US-Reisemagazin Travel & Leisure hat die Badeufer der Welt nach kleinen, versteckten und weitgehend unbekannten Stränden abgesucht, um seinen Lesern 15 Plätze zu präsentieren, die unbedingt eine Reise wert sind. In Portugal wurden die Urlaubsprofis fündig: Praia da Salema in der Algarve zeichne sich durch seine „bewundernswert authentische“ Landschaft aus. Luxushotelanlagen und Nachtleben seien in der sehr erholsam ruhigen Gegend nicht vorhanden, doch die erschwinglichen Unterkünfte seien sehr empfehlenswert und „das Dutzend kleiner Restaurants“ garantiere ebenso wie der örtliche Markt stets frische Köstlichkeiten.

Back in time Many a picture fades over the years, yet the photos of Fausto Napier still appear to be full of life, revealing just what life was like in Albufeira sixty, seventy years ago – even then a popular holiday and beach destination, despite its diminutive and sleepy nature. Born in 1915 in Santarém, Napier was Albufeira’s first photographer. Between 1934 and his death in 1984, Napier chronicled the growth and transformation of the city and its inhabitants in his many pictures.

A selection of his photographs can be seen until June 30th, in the Museu Municipal de Arqueologia de Albufeira, Tue - Sun 09:30 - 17.30.

Built upon sand As far back as Egyptian times, architects were already building pyramid models as high as houses out of sand to calculate the angles and edges for subsequent monuments. The International Sand Sculpture Festival FIESA wows visitors with larger-than-life figures and scenes, past and present. Over an area of 15,000 square metres (slightly larger than two football fields), between PĂŞra and the Via do Infante, some sixty sand sculptors from Portugal, Germany, Turkey, Brazil, USA, Russia and many other countries are creating a gathering of “idolsâ€?, the motto of this year’s exhibition, which has itself become a star of the region. The artists use 35,000 tonnes of compacted river sand for their sculptural artworks. Due to the size of the sculptures, but also because of the size of space they occupy, FIESA is recognized as one of the largest sand art shows worldwide. Wenn die geistigen, gestalteten und gestaltenden Leistungen einer Gemeinschaft von der UNESCO mit diesem Ehrentitel ausgezeichnet werden, dann sehen die Menschen in dem gewürdigten Land darin meist eine große Anerkennung. In Portugal ist das auch so, aber nicht nur: Seit der Fado im November Weltkulturerbe wurde, gilt: „Der Fado gehört nicht mehr uns alleine, wir teilen ihn mit der Welt“, sagt der Musikwissenschaftler Rui Nery. Der „Schatz, der etwas über Portugal aussagt, über seine Kultur und Sprache und seine Poeten“ steht nun in der UNESCO-Bewertung in einer Reihe mit dem Flamenco (Weltkul-

turerbe seit 2009) und dem Tango (seit 2010). Dabei gibt es den Fado eigentlich nicht. Von Anbeginn an gab es verschiedene Ausrichtungen des Gesangs, dessen Name vom lateinischen Wort fatum, Schicksal, kommt. Das wohl typischste Element portugiesischer Kultur entstand nicht auf dem Notenblatt eines Komponisten, sondern dort, wo Menschen leben – sehnsuchtsvolle Melodien und Texte erzählten vom Alltag und nirgendwo sonst kommt die Seele so anschaulich zum Ausdruck, wie in den wehmütigen Klängen, die von den Städten, ihren Menschen und Eigenheiten poetisch Zeugnis ablegen. Fado ist Volksmusik in ihrem tiefsten Sinne: Aus dem Volk

kommend und von ihm selbst für sich selbst gesungen. Im 18. Jahrhundert wuchs die Musik in Lissabon, die Melodien verbreiteten sich in den ärmeren Vierteln Alfama, Mouraria und Bairro Alto, in Spelunken, wo Matrosen, Prostituierte und Bohémiens verkehrten. Zu jener Zeit war die bäuerlich geprägte Welt in der Auflösung begriffen, Landflüchtige strömten in die Städte, doch ihre Sehnsüchte nach einem besseren Leben wurden allzu oft enttäuscht. Fado war dann nicht nur ein Lied voller Leid(en), sondern teilweise auch der Protestsong der Zurückgestoßenen. Die Texte trösteten aber jedwede geschundene Seele. Dieser ursprüngliche fado vadio, die spontane und schnörkellose „Musik der Vagabunden“, galt der Oberschicht lange als anrüchig und ist heute nur noch selten zu hören.

Beim Rückblick auf die Musikgeschichte muss gesagt sein: Fado lebte lange in gesellschaftlicher Ächtung. Doch er hat sich durchgesetzt und später entdeckten akademische Anno 1910 malte José Malhoa sein berühmtes Bild O Fado. Kreise in der Universitätsstadt Coimbra die Musik für sich. Bald entstand die ganz eigene Ausprägung des Fado als Studentenlied und kulturelle Flucht aus Jahrhunderte währendem, klerikalen Konservatismus. Dazu kamen Gesänge über unglückliche Liebe, über die Stadt am Mondego-Fluß und über das Leben der aufgeklärten studentischen Elite: Politische Elemente fanden Eingang in die Texte. Bis heute gehört zum studentischen Fado de Coimbra der schwarze Talar, die capa negra, wenn die Lieder mit vibrierender Stimme vorgetragen werden. n Fadokellern und auf Straßenfesten singt jeder mit, der sich berufen fühlt oder dem das jeweils angestimmte Lied etwas bedeutet. Zeitgeschehen und Orte haben sich verändert, der Fado sei aber „wandelbar und anpassungsfähig“, was ihm „ewige Jugend“ verschaffe: „Uma coisa portuguesa“, sagen die fadistas. Begleitet von der zwölfsaitigen guitarra portuguesa und der sanften viola, der klassischen Gitarre, geben sie sich oft mit ekstatischem Ausdruck ihrem Musik gewordenen Schmerz genießerisch hin: O gosto de ser triste – der Genuss, traurig zu sein.

Die bekannteste Fado-Sängerin des 20. Jahrhunderts, Amàlia Rodrigues, feierte in den 1950er und 60er Jahren im Pariser Olympia rauschende Erfolge und brachte die Musik aus Lissabon in an-

dere Länder. Der populäre Schriftsteller António Lobo Antunes hat den Fado zum Hintergrund seines 1983 verfassten Romans „Fado Alexandrino“ gemacht, einer Geschichte über vier Heimkehrer aus den portugiesischen Kolonien. Und Portugals ureigene Musik wirkte auf die ehemaligen Kolonien zurück: In Brasilien gibt es mit dem Samba vermischte Fado-Formen, südamerikanische Musiker wie Chico Buarque komponieren fado brasil. Auf den Kapverdischen Inseln hat sich eine ganz eigene, sehr melodische Form des Fado entwickelt – die Morna, die besonders von der im Dezember verstorbenen Cesária Évora in die Konzertsäle der ganzen Welt getragen wurde. Die Lieder der Sängerin und ihrer zahlreichen musikalischen Erbinnen verleihen musikalisch der Geschichte des Archipels Ausdruck, der seit Ende des 15. orld Cultural Heritage. Whenever the intellectual and cultural achievements of a community are honoured by UNESCO with this title, the people of the accredited country usually see this as recognition indeed. This is true of Portugal, but more so. For musicologist Rui Nery, ever since Fado was awarded World Heritage status in November, “Fado is no longer ours alone; we now share it with the world.” The “treasure that reveals something about Portugal, about its culture and language and its poets” now shares the same status, in UNESCO’s opinion, as Flamenco (World Cultural Heritage since 2009) and Tango (since 2010). Nevertheless, it could be argued that Fado itself does not actually exist. Taking its name from the Latin fatum, meaning fate, there have been various orientations to this music genre from the outset. Arguably Portugal’s most intrinsic cultural element, Fado was not created on a composer’s sheet of music, but rather in the people and their surroundings.

Wistful melodies and lyrics speak of everyday life and nowhere else does the soul find such ostensive expression as in these ardent sounds, poetically attesting to cities, their people and idiosyncrasies.Fado is folk music, music of the people in its deepest sense: born of the people, sung by the people for the people. Am Aussichtspunkt Nossa Senhora do Monte in der Alfama begleitete er Fado-Jungstar Carminho bei einem kleinen, improvisierten Konzert. Carminho sang bei der UNESCO in Paris anlässlich der Anerkennung des Fado zum Weltkulturerbe als Botschafterin der Sehnsuchts-Melodie ihrer Heimat.

At the Nossa Senhora do Monte lookout point in Alfama, he accompanied rising Fado star Carminho at a small improvised concert. On the occasion of Fado’s recognition as World Heritage, Carminho sang at UNESCO in Paris as an ambassador for her homeland’s longing melody.

These were times when the rural-led world was in the process of dissolving.

People from rural backwaters poured into the cities, but their hopes for a better life were all too often left in tatters.

Fado back then was not only a song full of sorrow and suffering, but partly also the protest song of the downtrodden. Yet the lyrics comforted any oppressed soul.

This original fado vadio, the spontaneous and no-frills “music of vagabonds”, was long considered objectionable by the upper classes and is rarely heard nowadays. ooking back over the history of music, it can be seen that Fado was long shunned by society. Yet it gradually gained acceptance and later academic circles in the university city of Coimbra would discover this music.

A Naifa

of Fado emerged, the music of students and a cultural release from centuries of clerical conservatism. This was joined by songs about unhappy love, about the city perched on the River Mondego and about the life of the enlightened student elite, with politics finding its way into the lyrics. To this day, the black robe, capa negra, is a still a vital part of student Fado de Coimbra, with its songs performed with a quivering voice. n Fado bars and at street parties anyone who feels the urge, or to whom the song means something, joins in the singing. Times and places may have changed, but Fado is flexible and adaptable, giving it eternal youth, what fadistas refer to as “uma coisa portuguesa.” Accompanied by the twelve-string guitarra portuguesa and the soft viola, the classic guitar, Fado singers often abandon themselves to their pain-turned-music, their faces lost in an ecstatic expression.

This is o gosto de ser triste – the pleasure of being sad. Amàlia Rodrigues, the best known Fado singer of the 20th century, enjoyed phenomenal success during the 50s and 60s, wowing audiences at Paris’s Olympia music hall and taking the music of Lisbon to many other countries. In 1983, popular writer António Lobo Antunes made Fado the backdrop to his novel Fado Alexandrino, a story about four people returning from the Portuguese colonies. And Portugal’s very own music has also affected its former colonies. In Brasil you can find Fado styles blended with Samba, while South American musicians such as Chico Buarque compose fado brasileiro. The islands of Cape Verde have witnessed the development of their very own, very melodious form of Fado – the Morna, which has been taken to concert halls around the world, especially by Cesária Évora, who passed away last December. The songs of this singer and her numerous musical heiresses give musical expression to the history of this archipelago, which has proved a strategic hub between Africa, America and Europe, and a culturally unique melting pot since the end of the 15th century.

ie beste Aussicht in São Brás de Aportel hatten wie jedes Jahr zu Ostern die Anwohner der schmalen Rua Gago Coutinho: Auf ihren Balkonen sitzend oder stehend beobachteten sie aufmerksam die Hauptakteure der alljährigen Osterprozession – man kennt sich in der kleinen Gemeinde. Unten, unter roten Stoffbahnen, die von Fassade zu Fassade reichen, schiebt sich die Osterprozession langsam Richtung Igreza Matriz – die letzten Meter sind bald geschafft. Hauptakteure in der geschmückten Gasse sind die Männer des Ortes. Gegen Mittag haben sie teils ihre Krawatten gelockert und sich Sonnenbrillen aufgesetzt. Nach tagelangem Regen scheint strahlend die Aprilsonne, Wasserflaschen werden weitergereicht. Alle paar Meter sammeln sich die Männer im Kreis, strecken Blumengebinde an Holzstangen in die Höhe und rufen: „Ressuscitou como disse, aleluia, aleluia!“ (Er ist wieder auferstanden, Halleluja). Wie schon ihre Väter und Großväter nehmen sie an der „Procissão de Aleluia“ teil. Es ist keine ganz strenge kirchliche Pflichtübung, gegen Ende ist die Stimmung ausgelassen, der ein oder andere junge Mann traktiert seinen Nachbarn mit der Blumenstange, aus den angrenzenden Bars klingen Musik und Lachen.

s in every year at Easter, the residents of the narrow Rua Gago Coutinho enjoyed the best views: sitting or standing on their balconies, they eagerly watched the key players in the annual Easter procession - people know each other in this small community. In the street, underneath the red fabric banners, stretching from house front to house front, the Easter procession is slowly moving towards the Igreja Matriz – just a few more metres and they’ll be there. The young men of the town play the leading roles in the adorned alleys. By midday they have loosened their ties a little and put on sunglasses. After several days of rain the April sun shines down radiantly, and water bottles are handed around. Every couple of metres the men gather in a circle, hold up their flower arrangements attached to wooden sticks and shout “Ressuscitou como disse, aleluia, aleluia!” (“He is risen as he said, hallelujah, hallelujah!”) Following in their fathers’ and their grandfathers’ footsteps, literally, they take part in the “Procissão de Aleluia” – the hallelujah procession. Not the strictest of church duties, towards the end the atmosphere has become more relaxed, with the odd young man beating his neighbour with his flower stick, and music and laughter can be heard from the adjoining bars.

t’s a dreary and cold April morning. Gusts of wind send dark grey clouds racing across the sky. Not a day you would wish to be outside on. But not so bad to justify shirking your work responsibilities, especially when it’s Poda Verde season. Hence Edite Alves is out in the vineyard, skilfully cutting back shoots sprouting on her vines. Only the strongest shoots are allowed to continue developing, ensuring the growth of the very finest grapes. She is assisted by four

s ist ein trüber kalter Vormittag im April. Böige Winde treiben dunkelgraue Wolkenfetzen vor sich her. Kein Tag, an dem man gerne draußen ist. Und auch kein Grund, die Arbeit zu vernachlässigen, denn es ist die Zeit der Poda Verde und deshalb Edite Alves draußen im Weinberg und reduziert mit geschickten Fingern die Triebe an den Rebstöcken. Nur die kräftigsten sollen sich weiterentwickeln, um Trauben von bester Qualität zu liefern. Unterstützt wird sie dabei von vier Frauen aus der Nachbarschaft. Echte Frauenpower, wenn man so will, denn die ist notwendig, um sich in der von überwiegend von Männern dominierten Welt des Weines durchzusetzen.

Eigentlich hatte sie bis vor ein paar Jahren keine Ahnung von der Weinproduktion, doch 2008 – nach dem Tod ihres Mannes Joaquim – musste sie die Quinta João Clara weiterführen. Ihr zur Seite stehen die Töchter Ana und Joana und die Önologin Claudia Favinha von Wine ID, die Garantin für Spitzenweine.

Während andere Winzer ihre ausgezeichneten Weine werbewirksam mit Plaketten und Aufklebern bereichern, legt die Ex-Reiseleiterin wert auf gutes Design und Understatement.

Ihre Etiketten zieren der stilisierte Adler von Benfica Lissabon, dem portugiesischen Kult-Klub und die traditionellen Kamine der Regionen Faro, Tavira, Paderne und Albufeira.

Von 26 Hektar werden nur 11 als Terroir für den Weinanbau genutzt, auf dem Rest gedeihen Tafeltrauben, Alfarroba, Oliven und Gemüse. Mit Ausnahme des Global Player Syrah verwendet Edite Alves nur die autochtonen Rebsorten Trincadeira, Aragonez, Alicante-Bouschet und Touriga-Nacional für Tinto und Reserva (eine Sonder-Edition in edler Verpackung).

Hauptanteil am exzellenten Geschmack des Rosé-Weines haben Trincadeira und Negramole. Bei dem eleganten Weißwein dominiert der Crato-Branco. Leider gibt es vom Jahrgang 2011 nur 8.000 Flaschen, denn die ambitionierte Winzerin setzt auf Qualität, nicht auf Quantität, deshalb verwendet sie ausschließlich Korken des Branchenführers Amorim. Die resolute Senhora scheut sich auch nicht, andere Wege zu gehen bzw. neue Rebsorten auszuprobieren. Auf einem Hektar hat sie Arinto, Verdadeiro und Moscatel anpflanzen lassen. In drei Jahren dürfte die erste Abfüllung dieser Trauben auf den Markt kommen. Man darf gespannt sein, womit die passionierten Damen der Quinta João Clara auch zukünftig die Weinkenner überzeugen. Besichtigungen und Weinproben sind nach telefonischer Vereinbarung jederzeit möglich und lohnenswert. Erhältlich sind die Weine bei Apolónia, Intermarché, in Restaurants und natürlich auf dem Gut.

Edite Alves entfernt überschüssige Triebe Edita Alves takes off some nasty parts

women from the neighbourhood. Woman power in full action, if you like, something very necessary if you want to succeed in the predominantly male-dominated world of wine. In actual fact, up until a few years ago Edite was clueless when it came to winemaking. But in 2008 - following the death of her husband Joaquim – she had to take over managing the estate. Her daughters Ana and Joana are there to help, joined by oenologist Claudia Favinha from Wine ID, a partnership sure to guarantee top quality wines. While other winemakers decorate their award-winning wines with ad-friendly taglines and stickers, the former holiday rep values low-key and good design. Her labels are adorned with the stylized eagle from Benfica football club, and traditional chimneypots from Faro, Tavira, Albufeira and Paderne.

Only 11 of the estate’s 26 hectares are used as winegrowing terroir, with the remainder used for growing table grapes, carobs, olives and vegetables. With the exception of global player Syrah, Edite Alves only uses native grape varieties Trincadeira, Aragonez, Alicante-Bouschet and Touriga-Nacional for her Tinto and Reserva (a special edition in exquisite packaging).

Trincadeira and Negramole are the main protagonists behind her rosé’s excellent flavour. As for the estate’s elegant white wine, the main variety used is Crato-Branco. Unfortunately there are only 8000 bottles of the 2011 vintage, as the ambitious winemaker prefers to focus on quality, rather than quantity. She therefore only uses cork from industry leader Amorim.

The feisty Senhora is equally unafraid to try her luck in other directions, testing new grape varieties. To this end she has planted one hectare with Arinto, Verdadeiro and Moscatel. The first wines made with these grapes should reach the market in three years’ time. We eagerly await the next chapter from these passionate ladies from Quinta João Clara, and what their next treat for wine connoisseurs will be. Possible at any time, tours and wine tastings are on appointment and well worthwhile.

H

oliday flings can be the spice of life, as beneficial as they are exciting. The resulting relationships usually don’t last very long. However the story of certified translator Petra Schuck from Cologne, Germany and Fernando Lopes from Lisbon took a different turn. They first met in Carvoeiro, became a couple, married and have been living in the Algarve since spring 2001. Five years later the two fell in love again – this time with a restaurant however, Colina Verde in Algoz. Here they have been able to fully bring to life their vision of experience-gastronomy and have created an atmospheric oasis of well-being, blending Portuguese rustic charm, a Mediterranean garden and oriental décor. They pamper their guests with fusion food: creative Portuguese-Mediterranean cuisine with Asian influences.

Their specialty of the house is Carne na pedra, rump steak cooked on polished black stone. Equally tempting: dried cod with chestnuts and raisins, gilthead sea bream sautéed in citrus fruit or chicken breast with mango sauce. If you’re not that hungry Fernando serves soups, tapas and a very delicious tuna carpaccio. For afters, the homemade prickly pear ice cream or the ginger-honey on fruit coulis are devilishly good. The wine list mainly features Algarve wines, as well as a selection from the Alentejo, Douro and Dão regions. On those long summer evenings, when dozens of candles and Moorish lamps bathe the patio in a warm light, when Adelino plays his guitar and a veiled torch dancer rolls her hips, Colina Verde almost feels as if it’s leapt out of the pages of the Tales of a Thousand and One Nights.

rlaubs-Flirts sind oft eine heiße Sache, können wohltuend und aufregend sein. Die daraus resultierenden Beziehungen halten gewöhnlich nicht lange. Hier konnten sie ihre Vorstellung von Erlebnis-Gastronomie perfekt umsetzen und schufen einen atmosphärische Wohlfühl-Oase aus portugiesischem Landhaus-Stil, mediterranem Garten und orientalischen Dekorationen. Ihre Gäste verwöhnen sie mit Fusion-Food: kreative portugiesisch-mediterrane Küche mit asiatischen Einflüssen.

Eine Spezialität des Hauses ist carne na pedra, Rindfleisch aus der Unterschale, gebraten auf poliertem, schwarzem Stein.

Auch nicht schlecht: Stockfisch mit Kastanien und Rosinen, Dorade, sautiert in Zitrusfrüchten oder Hühnchenbrust in Mango-Sauce. Für den kleinen Hunger serviert Fernando Suppen, Tapas und ein sehr delikates Thunfisch-Carpaccio. Eine Sünde wert sind auch das hausgemachte Eis aus Kaktusfeigen oder Ingwer-Honig auf Fruchtspiegel. Auf der Weinkarte findet man überwiegend Weine der Algarve, sowie eine Auswahl aus den Regionen Alentejo, Douro und Dão. An den langen Sommerabenden, wenn Dutzende von Kerzen und maurische Leuchten die Terrasse in warmes Licht tauchen, Adelino auf seiner Gitarre spielt und eine verschleierte Fackeltänzerin ihre Hüften kreisen lässt, ist es im Colina Verde ein bisschen wie in einem Märchen aus Tausendundeiner Nacht.

ie Region rund um Moncarapacho ist recht fruchtbar, das beweisen die vielen Gärten und Plantagen. Auf vielen dieser Anwesen stehen noch immer Olivenbäume, die in der Antike von Phöniziern und Römern angepflanzt wurden, wie z.B. im „Garten des Glücks“, der Horta do Félix des estnischen Adligen Detlef von Rosen, der seit Jahren hochwertiges Olivenöl produziert. Seine Ölmühle, direkt neben den Mahlsteinen aus der römischen Epoche, verbindet traditionelle Olivenkultur mit modernster Technik. Auf 20 Hektar gedeihen hier Bäume der Sorten Maçanilha, Cobrançosa, Verdeal und Picual. Vor mehr als 13 Jahren wuchsen auf dem Areal noch Orangenbäume, die mittlerweile allesamt durch veredelte Olivenbäume ersetzt wurden. Bei der Anpflanzung hielt sich Detlef von Rosen ziemlich exakt an die Empfehlungen aus dem Buch De agri cultura (Über den Ackerbau), dem ältesten Prosawerk in lateinischer Sprache, geschrieben etwa 150 v.Chr. von Marcus Portius Cato. Inzwischen tragen die Bäume reich an Oliven bester Qualität, die von Hand gepflückt und in einer ultramodernen Zentrifuge ex-

trahiert werden. Bevor es als „Königin der Olivenöle“ in den Handel gelangt, wird das Öl im Labor untersucht. Nur wenn die Testergebnisse alle Kriterien erfüllen, darf es unter dem Label Monterosa als Olivenöl Nativ Extra verkauft werden.

T

he area around Moncarapacho is rather fertile, as its many gardens and plantations go to prove. Many of these estates are home to olive trees that were planted in ancient times by Phoenicians and Romans. One such estate is the Horta do Félix, translating to“Garden of Happiness”, currently owned by Estonian nobleman Detlef von Rosen, who has been producing high quality olive oil for several years. His

oil mill, stood right next to millstones dating from Roman times, blends traditional olive growing with the latest technology. Maçanilha, Cobrançosa, Verdeal and Picual olive tree varieties are grown on 20 hectares of land. 13 years ago there were also orange trees here, but these have all been replaced by grafted olive trees. When planting, Detlef von Rosen has kept quite closely to the recommendations of De Agri Cultura (About agriculture) the oldest work of prose in the Latin language, written by Cato the Elder in around 150 B.C. In the meantime the trees are heavy with the highest quality olives, which are handpicked before the oil is extracted in an ultramodern centrifuge. Prior to reaching shop shelves as the “Queen of Olive Oils”, the oil is analysed in the laboratory. Only when all criteria are met can it be sold as extra virgin olive oil under the Monterosa label.

Dass man mit Trivialität erfolgreich sein kann, bewies Stephan Remmler, Ex-Frontmann der Kult-Band „Trio“ 1986. Sein Bratwurst-Song erreichte Platz drei der Single-Charts und avancierte zu einem beliebten Karnevalsschlager. Kult ist die Wurst auch am Cabo de São Vicente, das in der Antike als „Ende der Welt“ galt, und wo Petra und Wolfgang Bald seit 1999 die „letzte Bratwurst vor Amerika“ verkaufen. Ihr mobiler Imbiss-Stand dürfte die bekannteste Wurstbude in Europa sein und für die gegrillten original Thüringer- und Nürnberger Rostbratwürste fahren die Fans dieses Grill-Klassikers von Ostern bis Oktober meilenweit, um „völlig losgelöst“ mit der Bratwurst im Brötchen geduldig zu verharren, bis die Sonne – mal goldig, mal rot – im Meer versinkt, während der Wind die Röstaromen ins Hinterland trägt und die Brandung gegen die Steilklippen kracht. Und so mancher Mann wird sich bei diesem wunderbaren Anblick daran erinnern, dass die Gefährtin, die gerade ihren Kopf an seine Schulter legt, auch nach über 20 Jahren Ehe noch immer eine Klassefrau ist und das Ende offen und verdammt schön sein kann…

he Germans are famed for their love of sausages, with every region claiming to be the home of Germany’s Finest Wurst! The butt of jokes in comedy classics such as ‘Allo ‘Allo!, the Teutonic sausage has cult status across Europe - there’s even a much-loved carnival song about them!

This status can also be applied to the grilled sausages sold at Cabo de São Vicente, considered the “end of the world” in the ancient world and where Petra und Wolfgang Bald have been selling the “last sausage before America” since 1999. Their mobile snack van is possibly the best-known sausage stall in Europe and fans drive for miles between Easter and October to get their hands on original grilled Thüringer and Nürnberger Rostbratwürste.

Chomping unashamedly into the German delicacies packed into a bread roll, they patiently wait for the sun to sink into the shimmering sea, as the wind carries the barbecue aromas inland and the surf smashes against the cliffs. s war schon immer etwas teurer, einen besonderen Geschmack zu haben. Das gilt für die Ilha Deserta, denn den südlichsten Punkt Portugals erreicht man nur per Boot ab Faro, und der Fährpreis von 10 Euro hält viele davon ab, die schöne, unbewohnte Insel und ihre einsamen Strände zu besuchen. Und das kommt wiederum der Natur zu Gute. Das Eiland ist Teil der Ria Formosa und deshalb dürfen nur die Strände und ein Naturlehrpfad betreten werden. Wer kommt hierher? Nun, in erster Linie Sonnenanbeter, Muschelsucher, Vogelfreunde und Gourmets, denn das Restaurant Estaminé genießt einen ausgezeichneten Ruf. Es ist allerdings nicht billig dort zu dinieren, doch kann man sicher sein, dass die Qualität von Fischen und Meeresfrüchten gut ist und Cristiano Ronaldo mit seinem Klan am Nebentisch tafelt, denn den zieht es häufig hier her.

Gern gesehen und manchmal auch reizvoll, ist die Spezies der Nudisten, die am Westende Desertas ihr feinsandiges Habitat okkupieren. Wer das Privileg genießt, über ein eigenes Boot zu verfügen, findet in der kleinen Bucht an der nordöstlichen Leeseite ideale Ankerplätze und ist zudem unabhängig vom Fährplan, denn wer um 17.30 das letzte Boot zurück nach Faro verpasst, dem bleibt nur der teure Trip mit dem Wasser-Taxi oder das Bett in Dünen. Und in dem kann man im Sommer traumhaft schlummern und erlebt früh morgens einen der schönsten Sonnenaufgänge der Algarve. Joana, eine der hübschen, fröhlichen Rettungsschwimmerinnen von I.S.N. macht das gelegentlich zusammen mit ihrer Freundin Anaisa. Manchmal beobachten sie dann mit ihren Ferngläsern das Spiel der Tümmler und Delphine draußen im Meer oder Regenpfeifer, Flamingos und Zwergseeschwalben in den La-byrinthen der Sand- und Schlammbänke an der Lagunenseite.

pecial tastes have always cost that little bit more. This is certainly true of the Ilha Deserta, as Portugal’s southernmost point can only be reached by boat from Faro, and the fare of 10 Euros deters many potential visitors from setting foot on this beautiful, uninhabited island and its secluded beaches. For nature, this is a good thing. The island is part of the Ria Formosa and therefore visitors are only allowed to walk along its beaches and a nature trail. So who actually comes here? Well, essentially sun worshipers, shell seekers, birdwatchers and gastronomes, thanks to the island’s restaurant Estaminé, which enjoys an excellent reputation. It may not be cheap to dine here, but you can be sure of fine quality fish and shellfish and perhaps Cristiano Ronaldo and his clan eating at the next table, given his penchant for the island eatery. Always welcome and at times attractive is the lesser-spotted nudist, which inhabits the fine sands of Deserta’s western end. Anyone fortunate enough to have their own boat will find the ideal spot to drop anchor in the small bay off the island’s northeast. These lucky souls are also spared the constraints of the ferry timetable, because if you miss the last boat back to Faro at 17.30 you are left with only two options: an expensive trip home by water taxi or a bed in the dunes. These, incidentally, provide the perfect place for summertime slumber and to experience one of the Algarve’s most beautiful sunrises. Occasionally Joãna, one of the island’s pretty lifeguards does exactly that together with her friend Anaisa.

Sometimes they use their binoculars to watch the porpoises and dolphins at play out at sea, or the plovers, little terns and flamingos in the labyrinths of sand and mud banks on the lagoon side of the island.

inst war der Ruf „Fertigmachen zum Entern!“ eine gefürchtete Begleiterscheinung zum Betreten einer Karavelle. Doch heute sind Karavellen aus merkwürdigen Gründen kein sehr verbreiteter Schiffstyp mehr und deshalb schwer zu finden, und wenn man doch einmal eine entdeckt, dann steht man vor einer kleinen Herausforderung. Eine kleine, wohlgemerkt, denn mit 24 m Länge und 18 m hohem Großmast gehört z.B. die Karavelle Boa Esperança, die den Hafen von Lagos ziert, nicht zu den wirklich riesigen Seglern.

Doch die alte Form, der bauchige Rumpf, die langen Rahen – so wird eines der Schiffe ausgesehen haben, mit denen Bartholomeu Dias 1488 aufgebrochen war, als erster Europäer die Südspitze Afrikas zu umsegeln. Es handelt sich bei dem Schiff um ein ziemlich originalgetreues Replikat, das der Portugiesische Verband der Segelschulen vor 22 Jahren als Schulschiff bauen ließ. Vernünftigerweise verzichtete man nicht auf nützliche Kleinigkeiten, wie einen 190 PS starken Volvo-Diesel, ein modernes Navigationssystem oder auf die Verwendung von hochwertigen Materialien wie Polyester oder Edelstahl für die Takelage. Kapitän Dias, dem klar war, was es hieß, monatelang auf See zu sein, hätte solche Neuerungen heute sicherlich nicht abgelehnt. Und von außen fallen sie kaum auf. Die Vorstellung, mit der Boa Esperança einem völlig unerforschten Horizont entgegen zu segeln, macht eine Gänsehaut. Immerhin: Prinz Heinrich der Seefahrer hatte schon zu seinen Lebzeiten die Kenntnisse über Kartographie und Schiffbau in einem Maße gefördert, dass man der Windrichtung ein Schnippchen schla-

gen und auf geplanten und berechneten Routen den Heimweg finden konnte. Als nützlich erwiesen sich die dreieckigen Tücher der lateinischen Besegelung, die zuerst in arabischen und indischen Gewässern geführt wurden, wenngleich es dort auch hieß, kein Mensch, außer Verrückten und Christen, würde gegen den Wind segeln. Heute empfangen den Besucher auf der Boa Esperança herzliche Worte. Jeder ist an Bord willkommen, und das Entern ist zu einem kostenlosen, friedlichen und interessanten Zeitvertreib geworden. Seit 2001 befindet sich das Schiff, das inzwischen nicht nur bei Regatten und Festivals im feierlichen Mittelpunkt stand, sondern auch eine gefragte Filmkulisse ist, im Besitz der Tourismusbehörde der Algarve.

Dennoch ist die Existenz des Schiffes nicht weniger bedroht, als seien immer noch Piraten unterwegs: Wasser, Zeit und Wetter nagen unermüdlich an der Substanz, und die Instandhaltung fordert ihren Teil am versiegenden Rinnsal der öffentlichen Mittel. Portugiesischer Entdecker- und Unternehmergeist des 15. Jahrhunderts hätten hier sicher einige gute Gelegenheiten gesehen, das internationale Interesse an funktionierenden historischen Nachbauten und das touristische Potential in klingende Münze zu verwandeln. Doch heutzutage übertönt Fados Lamento die Stimme der Vernunft: Die Boa Esperança soll verkauft werden. Verwaltungen und Tourismusbehörde der Algarve sägen resigniert am sprichwörtlichen Ast, und uns bleiben vielleicht nur noch wenige Tage, das wackere Schiff in Lagos zu besuchen. nce the call “Hang ‘im from the yardarm” was a feared side effect of stepping onto a caravel. But today for some reason caravels aren’t that common a ship anymore and as a result quite hard to find. What’s more, if you do stumble across one you’ll be faced with a minor challenge.

Minor being the operative word, as, at 24 metres long and boasting a mainmast 18 metres tall, the “Boa Esperança” caravel currently embellishing Lagos harbour wouldn’t exactly be classed as a large sailing vessel. Yet with its old shape, its bulbous hull and long yardarms, it truly does resemble one of the ships on which Bartolomeu Dias set sail as the first European to round Africa’s southernmost tip in 1488. This ship is a reasonably faithful replica commissioned by the Portuguese Sailing School Association as a training ship 22 years ago. Wisely they didn’t abstain from useful trifles such as a powerful 190 hp Volvo-Diesel engine, a modern navigation system or the use of high quality materials such as polyester or stainless steel for the rigging. Captain Dias, who knew what it meant to be at sea for months on end, would certainly not have objected to such innovations today. And from the outside you hardly notice them.

The thought of sailing towards the complete unknown on the “Boa Esperança“ brings goose bumps to the skin. At least in Prince Henry the Navigator’s time he had grasped cartography and shipbuilding to such a degree that it was possible to cheat the wind’s direction and to find the

way home on planned and calculated routes. The triangular cloths of lateen-rigged ships, first used in Arabian and Indian waters proved to be effective, despite people from these parts believing that only a madman or a Christian would sail against the wind. Nowadays visitors aboard the “Boa Esperança” are greeted with cordial words. Everyone is welcome to look about the ship at their leisure, and boarding it has become a peaceful, cost-free and interesting pastime. Owned by the Algarve’s tourist board since 2001, the ship has in the meantime taken centre stage at regattas and festivals, and proved a popular set for filmmakers. Nevertheless the ship’s existence is under as much threat as it would be if pirates were still roaming the waters: water, time and weather gnaw tirelessly at its substance and its upkeep remains reliant on the ebbing trickle of public funds. The Portuguese spirit for discovery and entrepreneurialism from the 15th century would surely have spotted an opportunity or two to turn international interest into functioning historical replicas and tourism potential into hard cash. But nowadays Fado’s lament drowns out the voice of reason: the “Boa Esperança” is up for sale. Administration and tourism authorities are cutting off their proverbial nose to spite their face with a sigh of resignation. This leaves us with possibly only a few days left to visit the valiant vessel in Lagos. So make it quick before it sails off into the sunset forever.

chönheit liegt im Auge des Betrachters, sagte bereits William Shakespeare 1588. Große wahre Worte eines genialen Dramatikers – große wahre sichtbare Kunst und Schönheit hingegen begegnet den Besuchern in den Räumen der Galerie Art Catto in Loulé. Die Engländerin Rachel Deacon zeigt schöne sinnliche Frauen in klaren kräftigen Farben. Die Frauen-Porträts ihrer Lansmännin Pam Hawkes erinnern an die byzantinische Zeit und an die Malerei von Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo oder Botticelli.

Doch das für die meisten Besucher beeindruckendste Bild ist das überdimensionale Antlitz einer jungen Asiatin, gemalt vom Chinesen Yu Zhongwen. Dass man Alltagsmode auch an die Wand hängen kann, beweisen die Gemälde des italienischen Malers Alberto Magnani. Seine Krawatten, Hemden und Jacken sind eine Hommage an die großartigen Künstler der Renaissance und ihre diffizilen Darstellungen von Faltenwürfen. Extrem photorealistisch stellt der in Birmingham geborene Engländer Peter Evans verwitterte Gießkannen, Fassaden in Venedig oder Gemüse wie Kürbisse dar. Einige seiner Motive werden bereits von IKEA als Poster angeboten.

Georg Scheele stammt aus der Kreisstadt Hofheim am Taunus und arbeitet schon seit 30 Jahren mit Marmor und Bronze. Seine Skulpturen sind äußerst virtuos und scheinen zu schweben.

Der in Monchique lebende Künstler erinnert mit seinen transformierenden Formen bewusst an die optischen Täuschungen des niederländischen Grafikers Maurits Cornelis Escher.

Great and true words from an ingenious playwright – whereas great and true art and beauty is what greets the visitor in the rooms of the Art Catto gallery in Loulé. Englishwoman Rachel Deacon reveals beautiful sensual women in clear vibrant colours. The female portraits of fellow countrywoman Pam Hawkes are reminiscent of byzantine times and of paintings by Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo or Botticelli. But the painting leaving the biggest impression on most visitors is the oversized face of a young Asian woman, painted by Chinese artist Yu Zhongwen. pay homage to the great artists of the Renaissance and their difficult depicting of folds in fabric. Birmingham born Peter Evans depicts weathered watering cans, façades in Venice or vegetables such as pumpkins in an extremely photorealistic way. IKEA already offers some of his motifs as posters. Georg Scheele originates from the German town of Hofheim am Taunus and has been working with marble and bronze for 30 years. His sculptures are of exceptional quality, seeming to float. The meandering forms of the Monchique based artist bring to mind the optical illusions by Dutch graphic artist Maurits Cornelis Escher.

Polnische Kunst Polish art Im Mai, Juni und Juli sind an 3 Orten der Algarve Werke einer polnischen Künstlergruppe zu sehen. Der Zyklus von 3 Ausstellungen mit dem Titel Paisagens do Pensamento findet unter dem Patronat der Polnischen Botschaft statt.

Die Gruppe besteht aus 6 Künstlern, die 3 verschiedene Regionen Portugals repräsentieren: Henryka Wörle und Kasia Wrona, Algarve; Mariola Landowska und Ania Stankiewicz, Lissabon; Kasia Gubernat und Jacek Krenz, Porto. ier Geschwister treten als Streichquartett auf. Kathrin, Leonie, Borge und Malte – alle mit Solisten-Ausbildung an diversen Musikakademien, u.a. in Berlin, Detmold und Boston, schöpfen bei ihren Proben vor allem aus ihrer professionellen Virtuosität. Aber gerade wenn auch einmal die “Fetzen” fliegen, beschleunigt das zusätzlich ihre Produktivität, geben sie schmunzelnd zu. Das Zusammenspiel des TenHagen Quartetts zeichnet sich durch unerzwungene Harmonie aus, die auf den individuellen Stil jedes Einzelnen aufbaut und die Zuhörer förmlich in ihre Musik hineinziehen.

Das Quartett kennt nur eine Richtung: nach vorne. Innerhalb weniger Monate traten die Geschwister in rasanter Reihenfolge in den wichtigsten Musikzentren Deutschlands auf und heimsten einen Musikpreis nach dem anderen ein. Darüber hinaus setzen sich die Vier für den Dialog zwischen verschiedenen Kunstformen ein, um neue Kulturformate zu schaffen und übergreifend Kulturhungrige zusammen zu bringen. Die Assoziation der Literatur- und Filmfreunde Algarve (ALFA) freut sich, die Musiker am 18. Mai in der Capela de Convento São José in Lagoa begrüßen zu dürfen. Fans klassischer Musik können sich auf ein vielfältiges Programm freuen: Joseph Haydn, Franz Schubert, Igor Stravinsky sowie Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. Nach seinem Aufenthalt in der Algarve reist das Quartett nach Lissabon, wo ebenfalls diverse Auftritte warten. The quartet only knows one direction: forward. In the space of a few months the siblings performed a whistle-stop tour of Germany’s major music centres and pocketed one music award after the other. Furthermore the four also advocate the dialogue between different forms of art in order to create new cultural formats and bring culture vultures flocking together.

The Algarve Association of the Friends of Literature and Film (ALFA) is pleased to be able to welcome the musicians on May 18th in the Capela de Convento São José in Lagoa.

Fans of classical music can look forward to a varied programme: Joseph Haydn, Franz Schubert, Igor Stravinsky, as well as Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. After their stay in the Algarve, the quartet will travel to Lisbon, where they will also perform. m 1. Oktober 2011 fand im schönen Sítio das Fontes bei Estômbar erstmalig das „Obrigado Portugal“ Festival statt. Fast 2000 Besucher kamen zu dem eintägigen Festival und die Resonanz war überwältigend. Aufgrund der begeisterten Reaktionen haben Marion Buz und Silvano Stabile, die Organisatoren der Veranstaltung, sich entschlossen, das Festival in diesem Jahr an drei Tagen stattfinden zu lassen. Auch Lagoas Câmara Municipal, die den Veranstaltungsort in Estômbar zur Verfügung gestellt hatte, war über die Re-sonanz des Festivals hoch erfreut. Daher darf Obrigado Portugal auch in diesem Jahr an gleicher Stelle stattfinden und die Camâra hat umfassende technische Unterstützung angeboten. Das dreitägige Festival beginnt am 27. September (hoffentlich mit Fast-Vollmond-Beleuchtung) und bietet neben Live-Musik, auch kreative und interaktive Aktivitäten. Das Ziel von Obrigado Portugal ist es „Zusammensein und Kollaboration“ zu fördern und allen Altersgruppen ein freudvolles Erlebnis zu bescheren.

The three day festival which will start on the 27th of September, (hopefully, illuminated by an almost full moon), will include a variety of live music, plus creative activities and interactivity. The goal of Obrigado Portugal is to encourage “togetherness and collaboration” and to create a joyful experience for all ages. Madredeus Auf Europa-Tournee On tour through Europe

Portugals Kult-Musikgruppe Madredeus geht auf Europa-Tournee und wird nach Auftritten auf heimischen Bühnen u.a. auch Deutschland, Österreich, die Schweiz und Luxemburg besuchen. Die Tournee unter dem Namen Essência findet anlässlich des 20-jährigen Bestehens der Gruppe statt, die sich nach dem Ort ihrer ersten musikalischen Gehversuche, einer alten Kirche in Lissabon benannte. Madredeus erlebte seitdem zwar einige personelle Veränderungen, blieb aber ihrem Musik-Stil treu: Die traditionelle portugiesische Musik und Themen der nationalen Lyrik und Mythologie bilden die Grundlage, dennoch ist der Klang ihrer Lieder recht modern. The tour goes by the name Essência and will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the group, which takes its name from the place where they took their first musical steps – an old church in Lisbon. Despite experiencing some changes in their lineup, Madredeus have always remained true to their musical style: traditional Portuguese music and the nation’s poetry and mythology form the base, yet the sound of the songs is modern. One of the most important milestones in Madredeus’ recognition beyond Portugal’s borders was their partaking in Wim Wenders’ film Lisbon Story from 1994, when Portugal’s metropolis was European Capital of Culture. Doch eben das scheitert in Portugal am Geld. In Deutschland beäugt eine

Großbritannien wartet erst mal ab und Portugals Offizielle wundern sich, dass das genaue Gegenteil dessen, was Regierung und Troika postulieren, auf einmal politikfähig sein soll. Der Blick in die Presse verwirrt ihn: Da steht, die Menschen müssten immer mehr arbeiten, bei sinkendem Lohn und steigenden Steuern und Kreditzinsen, ein Pleite-Tsunami erfasse die Wirtschaft.

Geburtenrückgang, Emigration, Arbeitslosigkeit und Steuerflucht ließen den Sozialstaat kollabieren, eine internationale Experten-Troika berate und leite Portugal, damit es aufwärts gehe, doch das Land versinke tief in der Rezession.

In der Zeitung ist aber auch Jeremy Irons, der hier den Film „Nachtzug nach Lissabon“ dreht und in acht Wochen „ein Land voller Potenzial“ fand. Er rät, an dessen Leistungsfähigkeit zu glauben.

Yet the newspaper also shows Jeremy Irons, here for eight weeks to shoot the film “Night train to Lisbon” and declaring he sees in Portugal “a country full of potential.” He advises a belief in its achievement potential. As our citizen

browses the Internet he’ll find franchiseroadshow.ife.pt, a website offering licenses for franchises across the whole country, and boasnoticias.pt, featuring only good news from Portugal, of which there is a great deal.

And while the sleepyhead tries to understand the true state of this country, he reads: Portugal is discussing “Gross National Happiness”, which may soon replace GDP as a measure for economy and welfare. The idea of satisfaction as an economic measure stems neither from some South Pacific island paradise, nor from the USA, where the pursuit of happiness has been part of the Declaration of Independence since 1776. Gross National Happiness was invented in Bhutan. With a population of 700,000, Bhutan is one of the poorest nations in the world and

lives to a non-growth-oriented economic model in accordance with its constitution. According to the Happy Planet Index, such countries are faring better than growth-orientated ones. Ecuador and Bolivia have followed this example and the UNO is encouraging the debate in order to promote fair economic activities, and to protect cultural and national values as well as the environment. But this is just what is lacking in Portugal, due to the lack of money. In Germany a Commission of Inquiry of the Federal Parliament is eyeing the concept. The UK is biding its time and Portugal’s officials are amazed that the exact opposite of what the government and troika are postulating should suddenly be politically acceptable. In addition, Portugal is faring even worse on the Happy Planet Index (rank 22) than in the EU. This is confusing for so many more people than just Senhor Sleepyhead.

ie Temperaturen steigen wieder, und es sind vor allem die Kinder die nun en masse in den Pool steigen.Wasserspaß überall, vor allem nach einem langen Winter. Stundenlang verbringen die Kinder im Pool, über und unter Wasser. Ihre Ohren können das kühle Nass jedoch nicht immer so gut vertragen und es kann zu Ohrenentzündungen führen. Dies ist ein sehr schmerzhafter Zustand, bei dem der Spaß vergeht; nachts wird es oft noch schlimmer.

Häufig trifft es Touristen, die nur ein paar Wochen im warmen Süden verbringen und durch diese Erkrankung fällt der Urlaub oft ins Wasser Das menschliche Ohr besteht aus drei Teilen. Im äußeren Ohr befindet sich der Gehörgang, der zum Trommelfell führt. Dahinter liegt das Mittelohr oder auch Paukenhöhle. Hier finden wir die drei Gehörknöchelchen: den Hammer, Amboss und Steigbügel (benannt nach ihrer Form). Diese Knochen leiten Schall auf das Innenohr. Hier wird die Klangschwingung in ein elektrisches Signal umgewandelt und ins Gehirn weitergeleitet. Bei Schwimmern kann ein Problem des äußeren Ohres entstehen. Wenn das Wasser zu lange im Ohr bleibt, wird die Haut des Gehörgangs gereizt. Dies kann bei Poolwasser mit hinzugefügten Chemikalien sogar noch schlimmer sein. Die Haut wird weich und verletzlich, dadurch bekommen Bakterien ihre Chance und es entsteht eine Entzündung, die sehr schmerzhaft sein kann.

Die Haut im Ohr schwillt an und verengt den Gehörgang. Auch bildet die Entzündung ein Sekret, das sich mit dem Ohrenschmalz vermischt und den Gehörgang blockiert. Zusätzlich zu dem Schmerz hört man dann auch noch weniger.

Ein unglücklicher Zustand, dem man jedoch abhelfen kann. Erstmal sollte der Arzt den Gehörgang reinigen, um die Situation zu beurteilen. Das Trommelfell muss geprüft werden, um eine Infektion des mittleren Ohrs auszuschließen.

Wenn der Gehörgang gereinigt ist, wird ein Tampon mit Ohrentropfen, die ein Antibiotikum enthalten, in den Gehörgang eingebracht. Der Tampon bleibt 24 Stunden im Ohr und wird dann durch einen Neuen ersetzt. Auf diese Weise kann eine Entzündung des äußeren Ohres schnell und effektiv behandelt werden.

Vorbeugen ist jedoch immer besser. Bleiben Sie nicht zu lange im, und nicht zu oft unter Wasser. Ohrstöpsel helfen sicher, aber sind in der Regel nicht komplett wasserdicht. Versuchen Sie nach dem Schwimmen das Wasser mit einem Handtuch aus dem Ohr zu entfernen. Benutzen Sie bitte keine Wattestäbchen im Ohr, die verschlimmern die Sache nur! Wenn Sie Ohrenschmerzen bekommen, warten Sie nicht zu lange, sondern fragen Sie Ihren Arzt. Je schneller man behandelt, desto schneller ist es vorbei.

ow that temperatures are on the rise many of us, especially children, will start swimming again - fun in the pool, after such a long winter. Kids can spend hours in the water. Sometimes this water does not agree with our ears, which can result in an infection. This can be a very painful condition that can affect both children and adults. The nights are the worst. It often affects tourists who are only here for a few weeks. The infection can even ruin their holiday! The ear consists of three parts. The outer ear, this is the canal that leads to the eardrum. Behind it lies the middle ear, or the tympanic cavity. Here we find the three ossicles, the hammer, anvil and stirrup (named after their shape). These bones conduct sound to the inner ear. Here the sound vibration is converted into an electrical signal that is transmitted to the brain.

Swimmer’s ear is a problem of the outer ear. If water remains in the ear for too long, the local skin becomes irritated. This is even worse with pool water, because of the chemicals used. The skin is weakened and vulnerable. Bacteria can make the most of this opportunity. This leads to an inflammation and infection, which can be very painful. The ear canal skin swells and becomes narrower. Inflammation discharge can also mix with ear wax, with the resulting fluid blocking the ear canal. In addition to the pain, sufferers have to put up with hearing loss too. This is an altogether unpleasant experience, but fortunately we can do something against it. To begin with, the ear canal should be cleaned.

Only then can we really assess the situation. Indeed, the tympanic membrane needs to be seen in order to exclude a middle ear infection. When the ear canal is cleaned, an ear wick is inserted into the ear canal. This ear wick is moistened with antibiotic ear drops. This is left in place for a day and then replaced with a new one.

This is often a quick and effective way to treat swimmer’s ear. Of course, prevention is always better. Do not go under the water too often and don’t stay there too long. Earplugs can certainly help, but in general are not entirely watertight.

After swimming, try to remove all the water from the ear with a towel. Do not put cotton buds inside the ear; this will only make it worse. If you still have earache, the sooner treatment is started, the sooner it is over. Do not wait too long if you have an earache; go and see a doctor.

“Früher hätte ein Maler sie in einem Genrebild verewigt, als Wäscherin, Wasserträgerin oder Spitzenklöpplerin”, mit diesem Zitat endet das Filmdrama La dentellière (Die Spitzenklöpplerin) des Regisseurs Claude Goretta, den diese junge Dame sehr wahrscheinlich nie gesehen hat. Dafür beherrscht sie aber die Kunst des Klöppelns, die in der Algarve bis in die 40-er Jahre verbreitet war.

Das Museu Regional de Lagos zeigt einige Spitzen in Torchon- und Bändertechnik sowie einige Klöppelsäcke. Wer sich für diese uralte Technik des Spitzenklöppelns interessiert, kann sich an die Vereinigung Arte Sana in Sao Bras de Alportel wenden. Check out the Museu Regional de Lagos for displays of torchon and tape lace, as well as some bobbin cushions. Abschiedsparty Farewell party Gospodin Igor Der in Krasnodar (Kaukasus) geborene Maler Igor Oleinikov ist ein Schüler von Jörg Immendorff und Markus Lüppertz. Für die Algarve entdeckt hat ihn der verstorbene Galerist Volker Huber bei einem Besuch in Moskau. Igors großformatige Bilder waren mehrfach im CCSL in Almancil zu sehen.

Igor Oleinikov, born in Krasnodar in the Caucasus, is a student of Jörg Immendorff and Markus Lüppertz. Late gallery owner Volker Huber had discovered him for the Algarve on a visit to Moscow. Igor’s large format paintings have been exhibited on various occasions in the CCSL in Almancil.

Es war ein guter Tag, der 7. April 2012, der mit einem wunderbaren Fest im Garten und in den Räumen des Centro Cultural São Lourenço zu Ende ging. Es war ein Tag des Wiedersehens, ein Abend voller Emotionen, Besinnung, Mitgefühl, Anteilnahme und Dankbarkeit, angeregter Unterhaltung, sentimentalen Momenten, gutem Wein, delikatem Essen und Erinnerungen, aber auch ein Abschied, der schmerzlich ist, denn nach über 30 Jahren schließt Marie Huber (Fo. re.), die zierliche große Dame, die Förderin von Kunst und Kultur, ihre renommierte Galerie, in der Künstler wie Günter Grass, Jean-Marie Boomputte, Soren, Ingo Kühl oder Glyn Uzzel ein Zuhause hatten.

It was a day of reunion, an evening full of emotions, reflection, compassion, sympathy and gratitude, animated conversation, sentimental moments, good wine, delicious food and memories – but also a painful farewell, because after more than 30 years Marie Huber (pic. right), the petite grande dame, patron of art and culture, is closing her renowned gallery, where artists like Günter Grass, Jean-Marie Boomputte, Soren, Ingo Kühl or Glyn Uzzel had found an appreciative home.

Urlaub mit Tieren Holidays H with pets eutzutage haben viele Hunde den Status von Familienmitgliedern, die man gerne auf Reisen mitnimmt. Es ist deshalb sinnvoll, um nicht zu sagen unabdingbar, sich rechtzeitig sowohl über die rechtlichen Regelungen in den Reiseländern wie auch über die Beförderungsbedingungen der Airlines zu erkundigen, damit die Reise stressfrei verläuft.

Grundlegend ist die Verordnung (EU) Nr.288/2010 der Kommission vom 6. Mai 2010 zur Durchführung der Verordnung (EG) Nr. 998/2003 des Europäischen Parlaments und des Rates vom 26.5.2003, die europaeinheitlich verbindlich folgendes geregelt hat: Danach dürfen bis zu 5 Haustiere (gemeint sind Hunde, Katzen und Frettchen, ich spreche vereinfachend aber nur von Hunden und auch nur über die Verbringung von einem EU-Land in ein anderes Mitgliedsland) zu privaten Zwecken von einem Land in ein anderes verbracht werden, wenn die Tiere über eine gültige Tollwutschutzimpfung (mindestens 21 Tage vor der Reise), einen Microchip (nicht jünger als die Impfung) und einen “amtlichen” Europäischen Heimtierausweis verfügen. Dieser muss akribisch alle Impfungen auflisten und dokumentieren einschließlich der Gültigkeitsdauer und kurz vor der Reise eine Gesundheitsbescheinigung des Tierarztes bekommen.

Soweit die wesentlichen Punkte, die nun seit dem 1.1. 2012 auch für Reisen von und nach England gelten, wobei hier vereinzelt noch eine zusätzliche Wurmbehandlung längstens 5 Tage vor Einreise gefordert wird. Jedenfalls ist die frühere QuarantäneLösung vom Tisch und auch die langwierige, jede Spontaneität hindernde Behandlung und Dokumentation vor Reiseantritt.

Diese Bedingungen sind relativ leicht zu erfüllen, wenngleich es schon Sinn macht, sich aktuell im Rahmen der Reisevorbereitung mit Haustier zu erkundigen, ob das Reiseland sich mal wieder etwas Neues hat einfallen lassen.

Dies jedenfalls machen die Airlines gerne, die dieses Jahr nicht nur ihre Preise für die Beförderung der Tiere erheblich angehoben haben, sondern auch in höchst unterschiedlichster Weise bis ins letzte Detail regeln, welches Tier mit welchem Gewicht in welcher Box, allein oder zu zweit, im Laderaum oder der Kabine zu transportieren ist. Hier besteht absoluter Erkundigungsbedarf vor Reiseantritt, damit alles glatt läuft. Und das sollte es ja doch im Urlaub...

owadays many dogs enjoy being considered part of the family, and are happily taken along on a holiday. It is therefore sensible, if not essential, to take time to look into the legal regulations in destination countries, in addition to the airlines’ terms of transportation to ensure that your journey will be as stress-free as possible.

Fundamental to this is (EU) Commission regulation No. 288/2010 from May 6th, 2010, implementing (EC) Council Regulation Nr. 998/2003 by the European Parliament and the Council from the 26.5.2003, creating the following binding regulation for the whole of Europe: up to 5 pets (meaning dogs, cats and ferrets, but for simplicity’s sake I’m only talking about dogs and only about movements from one EU country to another) can be brought from one country to another for private purposes, if the animals have a valid rabies vaccination (at least 21 days before the trip), a microchip (not younger than the vaccine) and an “official” European pet passport. This should give a meticulous breakdown of all vaccines, including their validity period and receive a health certificate from a veterinarian shortly before the trip. These are the main points, which, since 01.01.2012, also apply to trips to and from England, which on occasion additionally requires worming treatment no longer than 5 days before entry. In any case, the former quarantine solution has been swept aside as has the lengthy treatment and documentation prior to travel, hindering any spontaneity.

These conditions are met relatively easily, although it does make sense while preparing for travel with a pet to enquire whether the destination country might have come up with something new.

Airlines certainly enjoy doing such things, having this year not only considerably raised their prices for the transportation of animals, but have also come up with an array of differing regulations for every detail about animal transportation - what kind of animal, what weight, what kind of box, travelling alone or in pairs, in the cargo hold or in the cabin. In this case you should really enquire before departure to ensure that everything runs smoothly. And that’s what it should do when on a holiday...
