Der Monat soll reiche Ernte bringen, in jeder Hinsicht, und dazu präsentiert die Algarve, was sie zu bieten hat: Dieser Tage wurden die Abgeordneten im politisch oft allzu fernen Lissabon mit Erzeugnissen aus der Region an deren Reichtum erinnert, der eben nicht nur aus Sonne und Strand besteht. Die Politiker kosteten Kulinarik und Wein, hörten Musik und betrachteten Kultur, Kunst und Kunsthandwerk. Und der Kurzfilm A Beleza da Simplicidade (frei nach Leonardo da Vinci übersetzt; Einfachheit ist die höchste Stufe der Vollendung) des portugiesischen TourismusVerbandes gewann nicht zuletzt mit Bildern aus der Algarve das Internationale Reisefilm-Festival in Riga. According to a Portuguese proverb, the scythe will be your companion in June (Em Junho anda a foice no punho). This month is meant to bring a rich harvest in every respect, and thus the Algarve presents all it has to offer: very recently MPs in the politically all-too-often distant Lisbon were reminded of the region’s wealth with local produce, revealing there are many more riches here than just the sun and the beach. The politicians tasted the Algarve’s local cuisine and wine, listened to its music, looked at its culture, arts and crafts. And the short film The Beauty of Simplicity (or as Leonardo da Vinci might have called it Simplicity is the Ultimate Perfection) by the Portuguese Tourist Board was awarded the commercial tourism prize, not least for its images of the Algarve, at the International Tourism Film Festival in Riga. With this in mind, Algarve Vida invites you on a colourful journey through June over the following pages. Happy reading!

Mediterranes Ambiente Vom 28. bis zum 30. Juni gehört das historische Stadtzentrum von Loulé der Weltmusik. Für das Festival MED werden sieben Bühnen aufgebaut und wie in den vergangenen Jahren mindestens vierhundert Künstler und 20.000 Musik-, Kunst- und Gastronomie-Begeisterte als Publikum erwartet. Das Festival der mediterranen Lebensart bietet neben Konzerten auch Theater, Tanz, Kunstgewerbe und kulinarische Überraschungen aus den Gastländern, vom Balkan über die Türkei, Griechenland und Ägypten, aus Nordafrika, Italien und Iberien. Music of the Med From June 28 to 30, Loulé’s historic centre will move to the sound of World Music. Seven stages are set up for the Festival MED and, as in recent years, at least four hundred artists and 20,000 lovers of music, art and food are expected to attend. Apart from concerts the festival of Mediterranean life also offers theatre, dance, crafts and culinary delights from the guest countries: from the Balkans through to Turkey, Greece and Egypt, or from North Africa, to Italy and Iberia. Sardinen, Fado und Wein Der Stadtfeiertag von Lissabon, besser bekannt als Dia de Santo António, am 13. Juni, ist über die Grenzen des Landes hinaus als Volksfest mit Sardinen, Wein, Fado, Folklore und einem musikalischen Corso durch die Stadt bekannt – eine Attraktion. Auch in der Algarve werden im Juni die Volksheiligen gefeiert, und zwar an vielen Orten, unter denen sich Lagos, Portimão, Albufeira, Quarteira und Tavira besonders intensiv an der Tradition beteiligen. Santo António galt einst als vorgezogene Sonnwendfeier (an diesem Tag nur in Portugal gefeiert), São João läutete die Reife des Weizens und die sommerliche Feldarbeit ein. Die Volksheiligen sind in Portugal lebendiger als im übrigen Südeuropa und die Algarvios feiern ihre Santos Populares gleich an mehreren Tagen in der zweiten Junihälfte. Auf der International Algarve Fair laden am 2. und 3. Juni rund 170 Aussteller auf das Fatacil-Gelände in Lagoa ein, zu einem Entdeckungs- und Info-Bummel zu allem, was die Region an Waren und Dienstleistungen zu bieten hat. Die Veranstalter nehmen für sich in Anspruch, die „beste Messe für ausländische Residenten in der Algarve“ zu sein und die Erfolge der vergangenen Jahre geben ihnen Recht, denn die Zahl der Besucher wächst ständig. Regional Showcase Some 170 exhibitors invite you to come and discover all the region has to offer regarding goods and services at the International Algarve Fair on June 02 and 03, held at Fatacil in Lagoa. The organisers claim it to be the “best fair for foreign residents in the Algarve,” and the successes of the recent years prove them right as the number of visitors is constantly growing. Sardinen, Fado and wine A local festival with sardines, wine, Fado, folklore and a musical parade through the city, Lisbon’s annual holiday, also known as Dia de Santo António, on June 13, is a famous attraction beyond the country’s borders. In the Algarve the popular saints are celebrated in June as well, and indeed many are the places, among them Lagos, Portimão, Albufeira, Quarteira and Tavira that engage particularly intensely in this tradition. Santo António was once viewed as an early summer solstice celebration (celebrated on this day only in Portugal), while São João heralded the ripeness of the wheat and time for summer work in the fields. The popular saints are more alive in Portugal than in the rest of Southern Europe and the Algarvios celebrate their Santos Populares on several days in the second half of June. Alles im blauen Bereich Die Associação Bandeira Azul Portugal hat unlängst in einer Umfrage ermittelt, dass die meisten Portugiesen bei der Wahl ihres Badestrandes sich nicht an der Blauen Flagge fßr Wasserqualität, Umweltschutz und Infrastruktur orientieren. Das am nächsten gelegene Ufer oder eines, das leicht zu erreichen ist, wird bevorzugt. Doch eins wollen alle Badegäste: An einem sauberen Strand ohne den Mßll der anderen Sonne tanken. Fßr die beginnende Badesaison kann die Algarve allerdings eine Rekordzahl von zertifizierten Stränden anbieten. Die Blaue Flagge, das Gßtesiegel, weht an 68 Meeresstränden und dem Fluss-Ufer von Pego do Fundo in Alcoutim am Guadiana. True blue A recent survey made by the Associação Bandeira Azul Portugal has established that for most Portuguese, the Blue Flag for water quality, environmental protection and infrastructure in no way influences the beach they choose to visit. They prefer the nearest one or one that is easily accessible. But there’s one thing that all beachgoers want: to soak up the sun on a clean beach unspoilt by the rubbish left behind by others. Nevertheless the Algarve has a record number of Blue beaches for the new bathing season to offer. The Blue Flag seal of quality is flying at 68 sea beaches and the river beach of Pego Fundo in Alcoutim on the River Guadiana. The Algarve Tourist Board has been rummaging through its warehouses and discarded old holiday brochures, wine guides, plastic films and banners from events and other promotional and information material. Instead of adding to the region’s rubbish heaps, the material has been recycled and given a new life. The resulting bags, purses, sunglasses cases and makeup bags are not only eco friendly, but also make for an unusual gift or a unique holiday souvenir. With the use of large graphic templates, each piece is unique, and the design does not repeat itself. Cocktail des Monats Cocktail of the month Der Caipirinha hat seine Wurzeln in Brasilien, dem größten Land Südamerikas. Bauern sollen den erfrischenden Mix aus braunem Zucker, Limetten und Cachaça, Zuckerrohrschnaps erfunden haben. Der Name wird abgeleitet von caipira (Landbewohner) und kann mit „Kleiner vom Lande“ oder „Getränk der Caipiras“ übersetzt werden. In den Bars der Algarve ist der süffige Drink die absolute Nummer Eins unter den Cocktails. The Caipirinha has its roots in Brazil, South America’s largest country. Allegedly this refreshing mix of brown sugar, lime, crushed ice and cachaça (sugarcane rum) was invented by farmers. The name is derived from caipira (country folk) and can be translated as “little one from the countryside” or “drink of the Caipiras”. In the Algarve’s bars this easy-to-drink blend is the undisputed number one amongst cocktails.

ex am Strand mag wahrscheinlich jeder. Doch dazu benötigt man Wodka, Pfirsichlikör, Orangensaft, Cranberry-Nektar und einen Schuss Zitronensaft. Hat man aber leider nicht immer zur Hand, deshalb empfiehlt sich die Stippvisite in einer der angesagten Beach-Bars (siehe S. 16). Die über 200 km lange Küstenlinie ist eine der vielfältigsten der Welt und überrascht mit spektakulären Grotten, zerklüfteten Steilklippen, klarem Wasser, versteckten Stränden und endlos weiten Sandflächen. Letztere sind typisch für das Sotavento, die Ostalgarve. Bei Familien, Naturliebhabern und Individualisten besonders beliebt, sind die Nehrungen und Inseln der Ria Formosa zwischen Quinta do Lago und Cacela Velha. Hier findet man selbst im Hochsommer, wenn die Tourismuszentren Monte Gordo, Cabanas und Manta Rota durch die völlig legitime Invasion tausender sonnenhungriger Urlauber „Sand unter“ melden, noch beschauliche Plätzchen. Die besten Strände sind auf der Ilha de Tavira (Praia do Barril und Praia da Terra Estreita), auf der Ilha da Culatra (Farol und Culatra) und der Ilha Deserta. Zwischen Festland und Inseln verkehren regelmäßig Fähren und Wasser-Taxis. Die Strände zwischen Vale do Lobo und Quinta do Lago mögen zwar ausschließlich einem etwas besonderen Publikum vorbehalten sein, doch nichtsdestotrotz sind sie einen Besuch wert, um einmal zu sehen und gesehen zu werden und – um im Gigi’s oder in Didi’s Bar & Restaurant an einem eisgekühlten Chardonnay oder einem Gläschen Champagner zu nippen. Auf dem langen Weg nach Westen, wo wirklich wahre Traumgestade warten, sollte man unbedingt die Bettenburgen von Quarteira und Vilamoura mit ihren teils künstlich angekippten Stränden meiden. Das Gleiche gilt auch für Albufeira, es sei denn, man mag Eimersaufen und Ballermann-Lifestyle. Dann ist man natürlich am Praia dos Pescadores bestens aufgehoben. Gediegen, gut und von kurios geformten Felsen um-
rahmt ist Praia de São Rafael, einige KilomeMaiTai ter westlich des Briten-Eldorados Albufeira, ein familienfreundlicher, attraktiver Strand mit vortrefflicher Infrastruktur. Das Dünensystem von Praia Grande ist das bevorzugte Habitat von Strandhafer, Aschenkraut, Strohblume und Grasnelke, aber auch Muschelsucher, Sonnenanbeter, Surfer und Sandkuchenbäcker fühlen sich an diesem endlos langen feinsandigem Meeresufer wohl. Seinen verdienten Sundowner (Tequila Sunrise oder Himbeer-Margarita) nuckelt man entweder im Rocha da Palha in Armação de Pera oder im Restaurante Pedras Amerelas in Galé. Fast schon das Wahrzeichen der Algarve ist die Bilderbuch-Kulisse von Praia da Marinha südlich von Lagoa, aber auch Praia da Albandeira und Praia de Vale Centeanes sind sehr attraktive Strände, besonders am frühen Morgen, wenn die tief stehende Sonne Grotten, Steilklippen, Sand und Felsenriffe in warme Ockertöne taucht. Entlang der weiten Bucht von Lagos erstreckt sich Meia Praia. Hier stößt man auf Wind- und Kitesurfer, Angler, Volley- und Strandfußballer, Strand-Masseure, Burgenbauer und ganz normale Menschen, die einfach nur ein paar Stunden entspannt in der Sonne braten wollen. Praia da Luz ist mehr als nur ein Strand, es ist ein mondäner Badeort mit kosmopolitischem Flair, Shoppingmeile und einer im Sommer sehr belebten Uferpromenade. ost people like Sex on the Beach. But for this you need vodka, peach liqueur, orange juice, cranberry juice and a dash of lemon juice. Unfortunately these are not always at hand, so we recommend a brief visit to one of several trendy beach bars (see page 16). The 200-km coastline is one of the most versatile in the world and surprises with spectacular grottos, jagged cliffs, clear waters, hidden beaches, and endlessly wide sandy stretches. The latter are typical of the Sotavento, the Eastern Algarve. Particularly popular with families, nature lovers and free spirits are the spits, sandbars and islands of the Ria Formosa between Quinta do Lago and Caçela Velha. Even in the middle of summer, when thousands of sun worshippers literally invade the beaches of tourist centres Monte Gordo, Cabanas and Manta Rota, you’ll still manage to find a quiet spot to set up camp. The best beaches can be found on the Ilha de Tavira (Praia do Barril and Praia da Terra Estreita), on the Ilha da Culatra (Farol and Culatra) and the Ilha Deserta. Ferries and water taxis run regularly between the mainland and the islands. The beaches from Quinta do Lago to Vale do Lobo may aspire to a slightly upmarket clientele, but don’t let that put you off. With great beachscapes, and plenty of bars and restaurants, kick back and enjoy a sip of chilled chardonnay or a glass of champagne, at Gigi’s or Didi’s Bar & Restaurant, for example. As you make your way westwards, where dream shores await the visitor, you should definitely avoid the hotel-lined strips of Quarteira and Vilamoura

with their partly artificially created beaches. The same applies to Albufeira, unless you like excessive partying. In this case you would be in good hands at the Praia dos Pescadores. Well presented and surrounded by curiously shaped rocks, Praia de São Rafael, a few kilometres west of Albufeira, is a family-friendly, attractive beach with an excellent infrastructure. The dune system of Praia Grande is the preferred habitat of beach grass, marsh fleawort, straw flower and sea thrift, but shell seekers, sunbathers, surfers and sandcastle makers thrive on this endless sandy shore as well. A well earned sundowner (Tequila Sunrise or Raspberry Margarita) is preferably sipped in the Rocha da Palha in Armação de Pêra or in the Restaurante Pedras Amerelas in Galé. he picture-perfect scenery of Praia da Marinha south of Lagoa has become an emblem of sorts for the Algarve, but Praia da Albandeira and Praia de Vale Centeanes are very attractive beaches as well, especially in the early morning, when the low sun tinges grottos, cliffs, sand and rocky reefs in warm ochre shades. Meia Praia stretches along the wide bay of Lagos. Here you will meet wind and kite surfers, anglers, beach volleyball and football players, beach masseurs, castle builders and ordinary people who simply want to relax for a few hours basking in the sun. More than just a beach Praia da Luz is a swanky seaside resort with a cosmopolitan flair, shopping street and a promenade which is very busy in summer. Salema, Furnas, Beliche and Tonel are the highlights of the Vila do Bispo region, and after that there is only the sound of the wind, the vastness of the ocean and the Costa Vicentina’s quiet, secluded stretches of sand, where the sun goes down alone many, many times, without a soul sat on the beach to watch it. it ihrem wunderbaren Klima, einigen der besten Strände Europas und einer relativ entspannten Haltung gegenüber Nacktbadern überrascht es nicht, dass die Algarve sich zunehmender Beliebtheit bei FKKUrlaubern, und auch all denjenigen Residenten mit einem Faible für nahtlose Bräune, erfreut. Der portugiesische Ausdruck, não faz mal, was soviel heisst wie “macht nichts”, bringt die entspannte Haltung der Portugiesen zu vielen Dingen auf den Punkt und die ist auch der Grund, warum das Nacktbaden an einigen, mitunter auch nicht offiziell anerkannten FKKStränden, geduldet wird. Öffentliche Nacktheit ist kein Gesetzesverstoß in Portugal und eine Straftat ist nur dann gegeben, wenn sich jemand dadurch moralisch angegriffen fühlt und Beschwerde einreicht – was in der Praxis eher unwahrscheinlich ist. Theoretisch kann man sich also überall frei im Adamskostüm bewegen. Während das Oben-ohne-Sonnen hier fast so verbreitet ist wie in den meisten anderen europäischen Urlaubsorten, würde man in der Praxis jedoch mit Sicherheit Anstoß erregen, wenn man sich völlig nackt unter die Strandgänger an den vielen ebenso beliebten wie belebten Stränden der Region mischen würde.

Aber keine Sorge. Es gibt drei ganz offizielle FKK-Strände an der Algarve – Adegas bei Odeceixe, die Ilha Deserta vor der Küste von Olhão und den Barril-Strand auf der Ilha de Tavira – und dazu noch ein paar andere entlang der Küste, wo Nacktheit nicht nur bei ausländischen Touristen und Residenten, sondern auch bei Einheimischen die Norm ist. Die folgende Liste ist keineswegs endgültig, da man in angemessenem Rahmen an fast jedem menschenleeren Strand nacktbaden kann, aber sie ist ein guter Anfang. Von West nach Ost empfehlen sich: Amoreira, Vale Figueira, Bordeira, Murração, Barriga, Cordama, Beliche, Barranco, Zavial, Furnas, Cabanas, Pinheiros, Meia Praia, Prainha, Caneiros, Afurada, Praia Grande, Armona und Caçela Velha. Für FKK-Besuch aus der Heimat gibt es zudem eine wachsende Auswahl an FKK-Unterkünften, darunter Pensionen, Campingplätze oder private Villen. Selbstverständlich kann man auch bei Aufenthalt in einer herkömmlichen Unterkunft tagsüber der Freikörperkultur am entsprechenden Strand fröhnen. Und wenn man einfach mal einen schönen Tag mit Gleichgesinnten verbringen möchte, so bietet Naturist Portugal den ganzen Sommer über Strandpicknicks für FKKler an (siehe Kasten) Einer nahtlosen Bräune sollte daher nichts mehr im Wege stehen. ith a wonderful climate, the best beaches in Europe, and a relaxed attitude towards public nudity, it’s no surprise that the Algarve has become an increasingly popular destination for naturist holidaymakers, as well as those expatriates who enjoy an allover tan. There is a Portuguese expression, não faz mal, which roughly translates as ‘it doesn’t matter.’ It perfectly sums up the country’s relatively laidback attitude towards many things, including nakedness in public, and is the reason why many beaches, even if they are not officially recognised as naturist, are naturist by common consent. Public nudity is not actually against the law in Portugal, and an offence is only committed if somebody feels morally offended and files a complaint - an unlikely occurrence. So you can, in theory, go naked anywhere you want. In practice, whilst topless sunbathing is as common here as most places in Europe, you should not contemplate going totally naked on popular and busy beaches in the main towns and resorts. But don’t worry. There are three official naturist beaches in the Algarve - Adegas at Odeceixe, Ilha Deserta off the coast of Olhão, and Barril on the Ilha de Tavira - plus any number of others along the entire stretch of the coast where nudity is the norm, not just with foreign tourists and residents but with the Portuguese themselves. The following list is by no means definitive, as within reason you can go naked on any stretch of beach that’s empty, but it’s a good starting point. Do use your judgment however and think of fellow beachgoers. From west to east, favourites include: Amoreira, Vale Figueira, Bordeira, Murração, Barriga, Cordama, Beliche, Barranco, Zavial, Furnas, Cabanas, Pinheiros, Meia Praia, Prainha, Caneiros, Afurada, Praia Grande, Armona and Cacela Velha. If you have naturist friends or family coming to the Algarve on holiday, there is also a growing choice of naturist accommodation, either in guest houses, campsites, or private villas. Or they can stay in non-naturist accommodation and simply head to a naturist beach during the day. And if you just want to meet fellow naturists for an enjoyable day out, come along to one of the beach picnics organised throughout the summer by information service Naturist Portugal (see box). It’s time to get rid of those tan lines now. ass Oktopusse gemütliche Höhlen mit Garten auf dem Meeresgrund lieben, erfuhr bereits Ringo Starr im Sommer 1968, als Gast von Peter Sellers auf Sardinien. Für den skurrilen Schlagzeuger Grund genug den Song „Octopus’s Garden“ für das legendäre Beatles-Album Abbey Road zu schreiben. Dieses Wissen über die Wohnvorstellungen der Gemeinen Krake (Octopus vulgaris) nutzen die Fischer der Gemeinde Santa Luzia bei Tavira seit den 30-er Jahren, als für sie der Thunfischfang immer unrentabler wurde. Sie befestigten Tontöpfe an langen Leinen und versenkten sie in den seichten Küstengewässern – eine Erfolgs-Story, die den kleinen Ort zur Kapitale des Tintenfischs gemacht hat. Mittlerweile sind die Tonkrüge durch haltbarere Plastikgefäße ersetzt worden, was die anpassungsfähigen Kraken aber kein bisschen stört. Das Dorf, an der Stelle gegründet, wo 1577 zu Ehren der sizilianischen Märtyrerin Santa Luzia ein Kapelle errichtet wurde, lebt vom Fischfang – und zunehmend vom Tourismus, denn immer mehr Gäste kommen hierher, um eine intakte Idylle zu entdecken oder in einem der vielen kleinen Restaurants und Tascas entlang der Uferpromenade lokale Spezialitäten wie TintenfischCarpaccio, gegrillte Sardinen, Garnelen auf Rosmarinspieß, Muscheln in Weinsauce oder Feijoada de Polvo, Oktopus mit Bohnen zu genießen. Zahlreiche Besucher nutzen Santa Luzia als Ausgangspunkt für Exkursionen der Ria Formosa, besteigen Wassertaxis oder eine der regelmäßig verkehrenden Fähren, um zu den endlos langen Traumstränden der Ilha de Tavira zu gelangen. Und jedes Jahr im Sommer lassen es die Einheimischen so richtig krachen, wenn sie mit Freunden und Urlaubern vier Tage lang die Festas dos Pescadores, das spektakuläre Fest der Fischer feiern.

ack in the summer of ’68, as a guest on Peter Sellers’s boat off Sardinia, Ringo Starr discovered that octopi love cosy caves with a garden on the sea floor. For the eccentric drummer, this was reason enough to write the song “Octopus’s Garden” for the legendary Beatles album Abbey Road. The fishermen of the fishing village Santa Luzia near Tavira have been using this knowledge about the living preferences of the common octopus (Octopus vulgaris) since the 1930s, when catching tuna became increasingly unprofitable. Attaching long ropes to clay pots and sinking them in the shallow coastal waters, they created the perfect homes for their eight-legged friends, and in the process turned the small town into the Octopus Capital. In the meantime, the clay pots have been replaced with more durable plastic containers, which doesn’t seem to bother the adaptable octopus in the least. The village, which was founded on the spot where in 1577 a chapel was built in honour of the Sicilian martyr Santa Luzia, lives off fishing - and, increasingly, from tourism, as more and more people come here to discover an untouched idyll, or to enjoy local specialties such as octopus carpaccio, grilled sardines, shrimps on rosemary skewers, mussels in wine sauce or feijoada de polvo (octopus bean stew) in one of the small restaurants and tascas along the waterfront. Many visitors use Santa Luzia as a starting point for excursions into the Ria Formosa, catching water taxis or hopping onto one of the regular ferries to get to the endless dream beaches of the Ilha de Tavira. And every summer the locals let their hair down when they celebrate the Festa dos Pescadores, the spectacular Fishermen Festival, with friends and tourists for four days.

Vila Real de Santo António ist angelegt nach der Architektur der Aufklärung und dem bewährten Schachbrettmuster mit einem Platz im Zentrum, der den Namen des machtbesessenen Marquis trägt. Ihre strategische Bedeutung als Grenzbastion zum spanischen Erzfeind und „schwungvoll“ geschaffene Handelsmetropole verlor die Stadt bereits drei Jahre später, als Pombal in Ungnade fiel und die Subventionen ausblieben. Heute ist Vila Real beliebt als Ausflugsziel und Adresse für preiswerte Einkäufe. Nirgendwo anders, als in den Läden rund um die Praça do Marquês de Pombal, werden Bettwäsche, Handtücher und andere Textilien billiger angeboten. Die Cafés, Kneipen und Restaurants sind Treffpunkt für Touristen, Einheimische und Grenzgänger zwischen Portugal und Spanien. Bevorzugte Flaniermeile ist die Avenida da República mit ihrer prächtigen Palmenreihe, den neoklassizistischen Villen und Hotels und dem Yachthafen neben der Anlegestelle für Fähren ins benachbarte Ayamonte.

he “royal town” is a consequence of the 1755 earthquake, a prized object of the Marquês de Pombal, Portugal’s controversial disaster manager and “ruler” of King José I. The town was heaved out of the boggy waste land at the mouth of the River Guadiana in the record time of just five months in 1774. Vila Real de Santo António was built in accordance with the architecture of the Enlightenment and the tried and tested chequerboard pattern with a central square bearing the name of the power-crazed marquis. Just three years later, when Pombal was disgraced and the subsidies failed to come in, the city lost its strategic importance as a border stronghold against the Spanish archenemy and “snappily” created commercial metropolis. Today, Vila Real is a popular daytrip destination and a valuable venue for inexpensive purchases. Nowhere else offers bed linen, towels and other textiles at a cheaper price than in the shops around the Praça do Marquês de Pombal. The cafés, pubs and restaurants are a popular meeting point for tourists, locals and commuters between Portugal and Spain. With its magnificent row of palm trees, its neoclassical villas and hotels and its marina next to the pier for ferries to the neighbouring Spanish town of Ayamonte, the Avenida da República is the favoured boulevard.

uillame Leroux ist Franzose mit portugiesischen Wurzeln: geboren in Paris, aufgewachsen in Lissabon und seit seiner Kindheit von der Magie des Weines fasziniert. Da lag es nah, diese Passion zum Beruf zu machen. Er studierte im südfranzösischen Montpellier Weinbau und Önologie, doch wie man richtig große Weine produziert, lernte er erst im Douro-Tal, bei Taylor’s, einem der ältesten Portwein-Erzeuger des Landes. Als ihm der Großvater 1992 seine Quinta vererbte, sah Guillaume den Zeitpunkt für gekommen, eigene Weine zu produzieren – und zwar mit den urtypischen traditionellen Rebsorten Bastardo, Alfrocheiro (rote Trauben), Arinto und Perrum (weiße Trauben). Zusammen mit seiner Frau Maria, die zehn Jahre in Brasilien lebte und in Rio de Janeiro Industrie-Design studiert hat, startete er das Projekt Monte da Casteleja. Nomen est omen, in diesem Fall waren es die beim Pflügen gefundenen Artefakte, 2000 Jahre alte Amphoren-Reste und Tonscherben. Monsieur Leroux ist überzeugt, dass hier einmal eine römische Siedlung, vielleicht sogar ein kleines Kastell existierte, deshalb wählte er für Quinta und Flaschen-Etikett diesen Namen. Von den sieben Hektar Land werden lediglich knapp vier für den Weinanbau genutzt, der Rest ist Reserve und Bio-Garten. Fast zehn Jahre sorgte ein Bewässerungssystem für die notwendige Durchfeuchtung des Bodens und garantierte optimale Erträge. Der auf Kultur und Tradition bedachte Winzer denkt ökologisch und stellte 2008 komplett auf organischen Anbau um, d.h. keine Anwendung von Pestiziden und Fungiziden, aber auch kein Extra-Wasser für die Rebstöcke. Der Ertrag hängt jetzt ausschließlich von natürlichen Umweltbedingungen ab, das entspricht ganz genau Guillaumes Philosophie – die Identität des Weinbaus zu bewahren. Deshalb werden seine Trauben wie vor Hunderten von Jahren mit den Füßen gestampft. Der so gekelterte und später in Holzfässern ausgereifte Wein wird ausschließlich regional verkauft – nicht mehr als 10.000 Flaschen pro Jahr. Bereits ausverkauft ist Monte Casteleja Branco, ein Weißwein mit erfrischender Säure, aromatischem
Zitrusduft, gepaart mit einem Hauch von Apfel. Beeindruckend ist die Maria Selektion, eine Art Liebeserklärung an Maria Leroux. Der Wein überzeugt durch tiefes Bordeauxrot, intensivem Beerenaroma, samtweiche Tannine und nachhaltigem Abgang mit leichten Noten von Pflaume, Schokolade und Feige. Speziell für die Gastronomie im Großraum Lagos wurde der Meia Praia entwickelt, ein robuster, ehrlicher vinho de mesa, ein roter Landwein, der bestens mit den Produkten der regionalen Küche harmoniert. uillaume Leroux is a Frenchman with Portuguese roots: he was born in Paris, grew up in Lisbon and has been fascinated by the magic of wine since his childhood. So turning this passion into a career was an obvious thing to do. He studied winegrowing and oenology in Montpellier, in the South of France, and Australia, but he only learned how to make really great wines at Taylor’s, one of the country’s oldest port wine producers, in the Douro Valley. When his grandfather bequeathed him his Quinta in 1992, Guillaume decided that the time had come to produce his own wines, using traditional grape varieties Bastardo, Alfrocheiro (red), Arinto and Perrum (white). He started the Monte da Casteleja project together with his wife Maria, who lived in Brazil for ten years and studied industrial design in Rio de Janeiro. Nomen est omen, in this case this was true given the artefacts found during ploughing – pieces of 2000-year-old amphorae and clay pots, and the discovery by an archaeologist of the remains of a small castle dating from Roman times. Hence the choice of name for the estate and bottle label. Four of the seven acres on the estate are used winegrowing, and there is also an organic garden. For nearly ten years an irrigation system provided the necessary moisture for the soil and ensured optimal returns. Being ecologically minded and intent on culture and tradition the winemaker completely switched to organic farming in 2008, i.e. no application of pesticides and fungicides, but no extra water for the vines either. Now the yield depends entirely on natural environmental conditions, matching Guillaume’s philosophy perfectly - to preserve the identity of the wine industry. Therefore his grapes are crushed by foot as they were hundreds of years ago. Pressed this way and later aged in wooden barrels the wine is only sold regionally – and not more than 10,000 bottles of it per year. The Casteleja Monte Branco, a white wine with a refreshing acidity, an aromatic citrus fragrance, combined with a hint of apple, has already sold out. The ‘Maria selection’, a kind of love declaration to Maria Leroux, is quite impressive. The wine convinces with its deep burgundy red, its intense berry aroma, velvety tannins and a lasting finish with slight notes of plum, chocolate and fig. Especially developed for the gastronomy industry in the greater Lagos area, the ‘Meia Praia’ is a robust, honest vinho de mesa, a red table wine that harmonises very well with the produce of the regional cuisine. om Tellerwäscher zum Millionär, von solch einer Karriere träumen viele, doch nur wenige erreichen dieses Ziel. Günther Geenen, Flame aus Antwerpen begann mit 19 Jahren tatsächlich als Spüler im hintersten Küchenteil des Montefiori. Als nach sechs Monaten der Koch die Kelle warf, überredete ihn der RestaurantInhaber sich als Ersatzmann in diesem Metier zu versuchen und siehe da – es funktionierte. Sechs Jahre kochte sich der Autodidakt durch die italienische Küche. Doch wer sich von morgens bis nachts um Pasta, Pizza und Pesto kümmert, hat kaum Zeit für Zweisamkeit, geschweige denn für eine Familie. Das halten die wenigsten Beziehungen aus. laub in der Algarve. Was er sah, gefiel ihm und so zog er kurz entschlossen am 3. Januar 2000 für immer nach Portugal, wo er nach vier Wochen ein Restaurant in Moncarapacho übernahm. Seit dem kocht er nach seinem Gusto und entdeckte nebenbei in einem Dekorationsladen die Dame seines Herzens – seine jetzige Lebensgefährtin Kitty Sousa. Manchmal geht Liebe eben doch durch den Magen. Gemeinsam betreibt das Paar Günther’s, ein liebevoll renoviertes Restaurant in Montarroio unweit von Olhão. Mit sabores do mundo, den Geschmäckern der Welt, will der Belgier seine Gäste überraschen. Und das gelingt ihm gut. Auf der Karte findet man Schmorgerichte à la garnd-mère, lombinho de pes-
cada, Seehecht mit französischer Sauce, griechische Salate, Tagliatelle alla Carbonara oder bretonische Crêpes. Im Winter veranstaltet das fidele belgischportugiesische Küchen-Duo MottoAbende, dann mutiert das Restaurant zum texanischen Saloon, mexikanischer Cantina, italienischer Trattoria oder portugiesischer Tasquaria. Im „kleinen Prinz“ von Antoine de Saint-Exupéry erfährt der Leser, dass man „nur mit dem Herzen gut sieht“. Diese Erkenntnis gilt abgewandelt in Günthers Küche, denn man muss mit dem Herzen kochen, und es muss dem Koch schmecken. Und dass, was auf dem Teller serviert wird, muss aromatisch und gut sein – und nicht nur optisch schön aussehen! Since then he has been cooking to his own tune and along the way met the lady of his dreams in a home décor shop - his current partner Kitty Sousa. Sometimes the way to a woman’s heart really is through her stomach. Together they run Günther’s, a lovingly renovated restaurant in Montarroio, on the road between Pechão and Olhão. The Belgian’s aim is to surprise his guests with a choice of sabores do mundo (flavours of the world). And he manages to do this really well. The menu features grandma style casseroles, Lombinho de Pescada, hake with a French sauce, Greek salads, Tagliatelle alla Carbonara or Breton crêpes. In winter the merry Belgian-Portuguese kitchen duo organises themed evenings, and the restaurant transforms into a Texas Saloon, a Mexican Cantina, an Italian Trattoria
or a Portuguese Tasca. In “The Little Prince” by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, the reader is shown that you “only see clearly with the heart”. This insight is true, if in a slightly modified version, for Günther’s cooking, because you have to cook with the heart. And what is served on a plate should be good and full of flavour - and not just pleasant to the eye! Urs Mayr

rom dishwasher to millionaire, many dream of such a career path, but few are those who achieve it. Günther Geenen, a Fleming from Antwerp, did actually start off as a dishwasher at the age of 19 in the very back of the kitchen at the Montefiori. When the chef threw in the towel after six months, the restaurant owner persuaded Günther to try his luck at a new metier and replace the departed chef. And, lo and behold, it worked. For six years the self-taught chef cooked his way through the highways and byways of Italian cuisine. However, someone whose attention is taken up solely by pasta, pizza and pesto from morning to night has little time left for intimacy, let alone a family. Only very few relationships can brave this. In September 1999 Günther came on holiday in the Algarve. He liked what he saw and without a second thought moved to Portugal for good on Janu-

urz vor 6 Uhr. Die aufgehende Sonne rötet gerade den östlichen Horizont. Silbern glänzt der Guadiana zwischen den dunklen Bergsilhouetten. Zusammen mit meiner Frau Marina genieße ich diese Stimmung. Wir sind hier in Montinho da Laranjeiras bei Alcoutim, um bei der Ausgrabung am Castelinho dos Mouros mitzuhelfen. Von diesem Castelinho war vor vier Jahren nur eine unscheinbare Mauerkuppe auf einem kleinen Hügel am Ufer des Flusses zu sehen, und maurisch waren die Reste auch nicht; sie stammten aus der römischen Zeit. Mittlerweile sind mehr als 2 m hoch aufragende Mauern auf einer Fläche von etwa 16 x 16 m frei gelegt. Das Unternehmen ist ein Musterbeispiel für europäische Integration auf unterer Ebene. Ins Leben gerufen hat das Projekt der deutsche Archäologe Felix Teichner von der Uni Frankfurt. Die offizielle Leitung liegt in portugiesischen Händen – bei Alexandra Gradim, der resoluten Stadtarchäologin aus Alcoutim. Aber die unbestrittene wissenschaftliche Autorität ist Gerald Grabherr, Professor an der Uni Innsbruck (Österreich), der mit seiner Frau Barbara, ebenfalls Archäologin, an der Grabung teilnimmt. Ferner zwei italienische Doktoranden aus Südtirol, Karl Oberhofer und Freundin Julia, sowie eine wechselnde Zahl deutscher und portugiesischer Studenten. Zusammen mit den freiwilligen Helfern des archäologischen Vereins der Algarve (AAA) – die Amerikanerin Mary, ihr englischer Lebenspartner Bill und uns – kann man durchaus von einem bunten Haufen sprechen. Archäologie heute hat nicht viel mit den Abenteuern eines Indiana Jones zu tun, auch wenn Geralds arabische Kufiya und Karls speckiger Lederhut stark daran erinnern. Oben auf dem Hügel ist harte Knochenarbeit mit Hacke, Schippe und Schubkarre angesagt. Schätze zu finden, erwartet niemand, im Rio Guadiana Gegensatz zu jenem erfolglosen Raubgräber, der vor 60 Jahren hier aktiv war und einige Strukturen zerstört hat. Es sind Erkenntnisse, die es gilt zu gewinnen! Und die schöpft man sowohl aus den vorgefundenen architektonischen Besonderheiten, als auch aus den unscheinbaren Keramikfragmenten, Knochen und Metallobjekten. Deshalb ist die Tätigkeit eines slave diggers, wie man freiwillige Helfer scherzhaft nennt, keinesfalls langweilig, denn bei der Arbeit darf nicht das kleinste Artefakt übersehen werden. Ich vergleiche es mit Goldgräberei: Genauso aufregend aber ungleich spannender, weil man nicht schon vorher weiß, was zum Vorschein kommt. Wenn ich zwischendurch den schmerzenden Rücken strecke und über die immer noch ursprüngliche Landschaft und den gemächlich dahinströmenden Guadiana blicke, verdichten sich die jüngsten Erkenntnisse, frühere Forschungsergebnisse und historisches Wissen zu einem Bild: Es ist das letzte vorchristliche Jahrhundert. Die Karthager sind schon längst aus Iberien vertrieben, und die Römer haben die Herrschaft übernommen. Doch noch immer sind die Zeiten unsicher. Ein Angehöriger der einheimischen Nobilität hat sich mit den römischen Besatzern arrangiert, deren Lebensart angenommen (wie Amphoren- und Geschirrfunde beweisen) und hier oben seinen befestigten Wohnsitz gebaut – wenn auch nicht so exakt und rechtwinklig wie die Römer selbst es getan hätten. Womöglich hatte er sogar den Auftrag, den Schiffsverkehr auf dem Fluss zu überwachen und zu sichern, denn die römischen Handelsschiffe transportierten wertvolle Fracht wie Kupfer, Eisen, Blei und Silber aus den Minen in der Nähe des heutigen Mertola. hortly before 6 am. The rising sun is beginning to redden the eastern horizon. The silvery waters of the River Guadiana shimmer between the dark silhouettes of the hills. My wife Marina and I love this setting. We are here at Montinho Laranjeiras near Alcoutim to assist with the excavation of the Castelinho dos Mouros. Just four years ago all that could be seen of this “little castle” was the edge of a wall poking out from a small hill on the banks of the river. And the remains were not Moorish, as the ‘Mouros’ suggests, rather from the Roman period. Since then walls measuring more than two metres high have been exposed in an area of about 16 m x 16 m. The venture is a prime example of small scale European integration. German archaeologist Felix Teichner from Frankfurt University stands behind the project. The official management lays in Portuguese hands - with Alexandra Gradim, the feisty municipal archaeologist from Alcoutim. But the unquestioned scientific authority lays with Gerald Grabherr, a professor at the University of Innsbruck (Austria), who is taking part in this dig with his wife Barbara, also an archaeologist. Other participants include two Italian postgraduate students from South Tyrol, Karl Oberhofer and his girlfriend Julia, as well as an ever-changing number of German and Portuguese students. Add to the mix volunteers from the Archaeological Association of the Algarve (AAA) - American Mary, her English life partner Bill and us – and you have yourself quite a motley crew. Nowadays archaeology has little to do with Indiana Jones style adventures, despite Gerald’s Arab headdress and Karl’s greasy leather hat implying the contrary. On top of the hill hard work with pickaxe, shovel and wheelbarrow is called for. Nobody expects to find treasures here, in contrast to the unsuccessful looters, who were active here 60 years ago, destroying several structures. Here the treasure is knowledge. And this is achieved through existing architectural characteristics and through the inconspicuous ceramic fragments, bones and metal objects found. Therefore, the work of a slave-digger, as volunteers are jokingly called, is never dull, because even the smallest artefact can never be overlooked. I compare it to gold-digging: just as exciting but much more thrilling, because you never know what you’ll unearth before you find it. As I take a break to stretch my aching back and gaze at the unspoilt landscape and the River Guadiana peacefully flowing by, the latest findings, previous research results and historic knowledge consolidate into one picture: we’re in last century before Christ. The Carthaginians have long been expelled from Iberia and the Romans have taken control. But these are still uncertain times. A member of the local nobility has come to an arrangement with the Roman occupiers, assumed their way of life (as proved by amphorae and tableware findings) and has built his fortified residence up here - although not quite as accurately and as right-angled as the Romans themselves would have done. He may even have been charged with monitoring and securing ship traffic on the river as the Roman merchant ships were transporting valuable cargo such as copper, iron, lead and silver from the mines near present-day Mértola. Ein Klang mit vielen Variationen und bewahrt es vor Musealisierung und Erstarrung in Klischees. Und das alljährliche Hauptstadt-Sommerfestival Festas de Lisboa, das den ganzen Juni dauert, widmet dem Fado im Jahr seiner Ernennung zum Weltkulturerbe Dutzende von Konzerten (www.egeac. pt). Ein ganz besonderes Erlebnis ist der Fado nos Elétricos: Fadistas begleiten die Fahrt der historischen Straßenbahnlinien 12 und 28 (5. – 10.6., jew. 16 h und 19 h ab Praça da Figueira) usik-affine Zeitgenossen kommen nach Portugal, um das alte Lied zu ergründen und beginnen im Lissabonner Museu do Fado e da Guitarra Portuguesa (Stadtteil Alfama; Largo do Chafariz de Dentro): In Wort, Bild und Ton ist die Geschichte des Fado dokumentiert. Und seit Kurzem besitzt das Museu da Música (Metrostation Alto dos Moinhos) das Archiv von Bruce Bastin, vom Kulturministerium für eine gute Million Euro dem Musikologen und Sammler aus dem südenglischen Bexhill abgekauft: Diese weltweit umfangreichste, aussagekräftigste private Fado-Sammlung umfasst 5.000 historische Schallplatten und Utensilien. Der Gesang der Fadistas lebt nicht ohne die ureigene Begleitung: Die Guitarra Portuguesa. Das zwölfsaitige Instrument ist kleiner als eine klassische Gitarre, doch auch hier gibt es Abweichungen,

je nachdem, in welchem Landesteil sie gebaut wurde. Diese Gitarre hat mittelalterliche Vorfahren und klang später in den Salons des Bürgertums ebenso häufig an, wie in den Tabernas des einfachen Volkes. Das städtische Museum in Portimão widmet Ursprüngen, Formen, Baumeistern und Tendenzen der Guitarra Portuguesa derzeit eine sehr anschauliche Ausstellung (bis 30. September). Warum eigentlich soll allein die Gitarre den Fado begleiten können, fragten sich einige Musiker. Der Saxophonist Rão Kyao steuerte einen heiser-metallischen Sound bei. Der im Mai verstorbene Ausnahme-Pianist Bernardo Sassetti hat verschiedene Klassiker auf dem Klavier interpretiert und darüber hinaus gemeinsam mit seinem Pianistenkollegen Mário Laginha jazzige Variationen vorgestellt. Und eine von portugiesischen Publikum zunächst zurückhaltend aufgenommene, inzwischen gefeierte Variante kommt von der polnischen Geigerin Natalia Juskiewicz, die Portugals ureigenste Musik als Streichkonzert überbringt. Was lebendig ist und zur Kultur einer Nation gehört, ist aber auch der Gefahr ausgesetzt, verformt zu werden, zu urbaner Touristenfolklore zu verkommen. Da wird das Lissabonner Viertel Mouraria besungen oder Uma Casa Portuguesa, das Meer, die Tränen, die Fähren auf dem Tejo, ein Kastanienverkäufer, das abhanden gekommene Glück, der Mensch in der Stadt oder die Índios da Meia Praia, Portugals berühmter Barde Zeca Afonso hat das Lied den Fischern in dem Dörfchen bei Lagos gewidmet. Die Themen kommen aus dem Leben und kennen kein Alter, denn Fadistas singen heute auch neue Lieder mit gegenwartsnaher Lyrik. Fado definitiv in Mode ist: Internationale Tourneen und hohe CD-Verkaufszahlen belegen den Boom. Als Fado-Urgestein Carlos do Carmo 2006 nach Macau reiste, wurde sein Konzert vom chinesischen Rundfunk landesweit übertragen. Der spanische Starregisseur Carlos Saura setzte der Musik 2007 mit seinem Film Fados ein Denkmal. ado, Portugal’s fanfare to fate, is complex and variable. Songs can refer to the Lisbon quarter of Mouraria or to a simple Portuguese home. They speak of the sea, of tears, of the ferries crossing the River Tagus, and of a humble chestnut seller. They remember lost happiness, the man in the city or even the “Índios of Meia Praia”, as in the song by famous bard Zeca Afonso, dedicated to the fishermen in the village near Lagos. The subject matter of each song comes from life itself, timeless issues or reflecting the era, with current fadistas even singing new songs with contemporary poetry. Fado is definitely on a high: international tours and high CD sales figures reflect this boom. When fado veteran Carlos do Carmo travelled to Macau in 2006, Chinese television broadcasted his concert nationwide. Renowned Spanish director Carlos Saura sculpted a cinematic monument to this music with his 2007 film “Fados”. Mariza, nominated best voice of the year 2000, is currently the world’s most successful fado artist. A

young generation of musicians supervises and maintains this national musical heritage, revamping the traditional genre and keeping it from becoming a museum piece and set in clichés. And the capital’s annual summer festival “Festa de Lisboa”, held throughout the month of June, is dedicating much of it programme to fado concerts in this year of fado’s nomination as World Intangible Heritage (www.egeac.pt). A very special experience is the “Fado nos Elétricos”: fadistas accompany passengers on their tram journeys along Lisbon’s historic number 12 and 28 tram lines (June 05-10, at 4pm and 7pm, starting at the Praça da Figueira) usic-savvy contemporaries come to Portugal to explore the old song, starting in Lisbon’s Museu do Fado e da Guitarra Portuguesa (Alfama district, Largo do Chafariz de Dentro), with the history of fado documented in word, image and sound in this museum. Another must is the Museu da Música (Alto dos Moinhos metro station), the new home of the Bruce Bastin collection, recently purchased by the Ministry for Culture for about one million Euros from the musicologist and collector from Bexhill in Southern England. The world’s largest, most informative private Fado collection contains five thousand music recordings and paraphernalia. The fadistas’ vocals are nothing without the right accompaniment: the Guitarra Portuguesa. This twelve-string instrument is smaller than a classical guitar, but even here there are variations, depending on which part of the country the

instrument is made. With predecessors as early as medieval times, this guitar could later be heard as much in middle class parlours as it was in the tabernas of the common people. Portimão Municipal Museum is currently holding a very ostensive exhibition on the origins, forms, master-builders and tendencies of the Guitarra Portuguesa (until September 30). Some musicians have questioned the reasons as to why only the guitar should accompany Fado. Saxophone player Rão Kyao contributed a husky, metallic sound. The late Bernardo Sassetti, exceptional pianist, who died tragically in May, interpreted several classics on the piano and also presented jazzy variations together with fellow pianist Mário Laginha. And another version, reluctantly received initially but now acclaimed by the Portuguese audience, comes from Polish violinist Natalia Juskiewicz who conveys Portugal’s very own music as a Concerto for Strings. But a living part of the culture of a nation is also exposed to the risk of being deformed, and reduced into nothing but tourist fodder. To prevent this from happening Fado music lovers in the Algarve have now founded the Associação de Fado do Algarve. Through its preliminary headquarters on Facebook, its intention is to promote concerts and support artists, because “those who understand Fado, understand Portugal”. Henrietta Bilawer

Diese präzise Frage würde der indische GelächterGuru Sanjay Shihora als erstes stellen, sich dann Eier, Torten und Mehl ins Gesicht klatschen und sich bis auf eine Krawatte vor dem Gemächt nackt ausziehen. Natürlich ist das Comedy, Kabarett auf höchstem Niveau mit dem Onkel Andi, alias Referend Rebers am 6. Mai sein Publikum in Lagoa berauschte, verwirrte und begeisterte und sich mit seinem aktuellen Programm „Ich regel das“ sehr deutlich vom weichgespülten Mainstream-Müll des billig-blöden KlamaukKollektivs Barth, Pocher & Co. abhebt. Zu Andreas Rebers Feindbildern zählen Vegetarier, Walldorfschulen, Religionen, Banken, Emanzipation, alleinerziehende Mütter, Bio-Produkte, Politiker und Massen-Medien. Thomas Gottschalk wäre für den Wortakrobaten ideal als Moderator der Kuppel-Show “Priester sucht Ministrant”. Doch die absolute Kernaussage seiner alles umspannenden Andacht ist die Überbringung der aus einer Kochsendung entnommenen neuen Botschaft für die Algarve: Die Ente ist weiter! This is the new message from referend Rebers, preacher and prophet of the anarchic Bitockens

unny German. To some readers these two words may sound like a contradiction in terms. Such a thought may be considered a little politically incorrect. But, with his ascorbic comedic style, this line of thinking fits in surprisingly well with the material of German comic Andreas Rebers, aka Reverend Rebers, preacher and prophet of the anarchic Bitockens. Is this comedy? This is the question Indian funny man Sanjay Shihora asks before smothering his face in eggs, cakes and flour and stripping down naked with just a tie to protect his modesty. Of course this is comedy, cabaret in its highest form, not dissimilar to the comedy Reverend Rebers employed to befuddle, bewilder and excite his Lagoa audience on May 6th and far removed from the ‘unfunny’ mainstream rubbish normally handed out. Testing comic boundaries to the limit, and those of good taste, the Messiah of the Boblowitzer Bikocken treated his audience, who turned out in large numbers to the Auditóro Municipal, to insane ideologies, enduring food for thought, biting irony, shamelessness, and incredibly entertaining slapstick, all presented articulately and in a rapidly switching mishmash of Viennese charm, lisping tongue and the rolling Rs of a certain moustachioed Austrian megalomaniac. Andreas Rebers’ idea of the enemy includes vegetarians, Rudolf Steiner schools, religions, banks, emancipation, single mothers, organic products, politicians and mass media. He even dares to offend his audience with jokes about matchmaking shows called “Priest looking for altar boy”. But then, after thoroughly wearing out the laughter (and shock) muscles of his audience, the comedian pulled out another talent from his sleeve. For an encore, he began to eloquently sing a series of Portuguese folk songs, penned by the legendary Zeca Afonso. Learnt by heart many years before, when Rebers worked on the tomato harvest as a student soon after the 1974 revolution, they offered a very different vision of this controversial satirist.

Kerstin Lange wird am 12. Juni beim ALFA-Literatursalon in Lagoa, so wie einen Tag später, am 13. Juni, in Aljezur auftreten und aus diesem Buch vorlesen. Neben Krimigeschichten schreiben, heißt ihre zweite Passion kochen und essen. Kein Wunder also, dass in ihren Kriminalgeschichten durchaus auch Leichen und leckere Mundhäppchen auftauchen. In ihrem neuen Buch Aufgetischt und Abserviert, das im Juni 2012 im Cenarius Verlag erscheinen wird, hat die Autorin ihre drei Vorlieben zwischen Küche, Essen und Mord vereint. Dieses Buch enthält ein buntes Sammelsurium an Kurzkrimis aus Neuss und Umgebung in denen jeweils eine typische niederrheinische Spezialität eine Rolle spielt. Im Anhang des Kurzgeschichtenbandes findet der Leser ein RezeptGlossar. taying with her mother in Moncarapacho whenever free from her duties as a Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing and English Literature at the University of Glamorgan, Tiffany Murray finds in the Algarve the tranquillity she needs to write. The author of acclaimed novel Diamond Star Halo, recently released in paperback, admits the work is an homage to her late father and a love letter to music. With the film rights to the novel already purchased, Tiffany’s current project is to develop the script, working alongside fellow writer Owen Sheers. Fingers crossed, filming should take place in the summer of 2013. In the meantime, in a break from fiction Tiffany is working on another project close to her heart – a cookery book with her mother Joan. Entitled The Rock & Roll Cookbook, the work focuses on Joan’s time as cook at the legendary Rockfield recording studios, her continuing passion for food, and how the Algarve has influenced this in recent years.
Genähte Kunst Material Girl Lelia Vansteelant ist eine stille, zurückhaltende Dame, doch wenn sie ihre Kunst beschreibt, gerät sie in Plauderstimmung. Sie war einmal Direktrice in der Amsterdamer Fashion-Industrie und hat Models Kollektionen auf den Leib geschneidert. Doch irgendwann verlor sie den Spaß am stressigen Job. Die Liebe zu Textilien ist allerdings geblieben. Lange Jahre hat sie die Ruhe und Abgeschiedenheit des Alentejos genossen; seit sechs Jahren lebt die Belgierin nun in Silves und näht in ihrem Atelier wunderschöne Bilder aus Seide, Goldbrokat, Tüll, Spitzen, Perlen, Flitter und Edelgarnen, die zuletzt auf einer Ausstellung im Benamor Golf Club zu sehen waren. She was once a manager in Amsterdam’s fashion industry, tailoring whole collections for models. But at one point she stopped enjoying her stressful job. Her love for textiles has remained however. For many years she enjoyed the quiet and the seclusion of the Alentejo, but for six years now, the Belgian has been living in Silves, sewing in her studio beautiful pictures made of silk and gold brocades, tulle, laces, beads, sequins and precious yarns, some of which were recently on show in an exhibition at Benamor Golf Club. tatistiken gehören zum Fußball wie Vinho Verde zum Sommer. Deshalb werden beide bei passender Gelegenheit gerne gereicht. Jemand hat ausgerechnet, dass Mannschaften in roten Trikots häufiger siegen als andersfarbig gekleidete. In portugiesischen, deutschen und englischen Erstligen widerlegten die rotgewandeten Spitzenplatz-Aspiranten Benfica, Bayern und ManU zwar gerade die Statistik und endeten als zweiter Sieger, aber bald rollt der Ball europaweit, das weckt neue Hoffnungen. Nicht nur auf dem Rasen. Auch die Wirtschaft kalkuliert schon im Vorfeld den monetären Nebeneffekt eines jeden Tors. Zwar rieten die meisten Werbeagenturen ihren Kunden, während der EM eine Werbepause einzulegen, da bei viel Konkurrenz und strengen UEFABeschränkungen der Ertrag hinter dem Einsatz zurückbleibe. Und Portugals Regierung hat zur EM 2012 keine eigene Wirtschaftsförderungs-Kampagne aufgelegt wie bei vergangenen internationalen Turnieren; das Marketingprojekt Força Portugal lebt nur auf ein paar Fan-Artikeln fort. In der Abseitsposition erzielt man aber gemeinhin keinen Treffer. Deshalb warten nicht nur die Fans auf

inspirierende Erfolge ihrer Kicker: Vergleichsstudien haben gezeigt, dass nationale Ball-Euphorie stets zum wirtschaftlichen Aufschwung beitrug. Portugals Volksseele ist zwar ständig für Fußball gerüstet, doch jetzt werfen die Fans ihren kickenden Idolen erstmals Verschwendung vor: Zu Hause werden Urlaubs- und Weihnachtsgeld gekürzt, Steuern erhöht und vier von fünf Profi-Fußballklubs sind mit den Gehaltszahlungen im Rückstand, aber die Seleção hat im polnischen Opalenica ein Hotel für 33.000 Euro pro Tag gebucht. Damit nicht genug: Die Mannschaft aus dem Rezessionsland Portugal wohnt teurer als alle anderen Nationen (Deutschland € 22.500 in Danzig; England € 19.000 in Krakau). Paradebeispiel ist bis heute der damalige Vertragsschluss von Trainer José Mourinho in England. Mit seinem Konterfei wurde in der Folge Portugals KorkWirtschaft positiv vermarktet. In Polen und der Ukraine setzt Portugal auf Sieg. Die EM-Trikots der portugiesischen Nationalmannschaft betonen die Farbe rot, aber ein Ergebnis als Zweiter wäre aus der Sicht der portugiesischen Wirtschaft ungünstig: Stets schnitt die Nation Nummer Zwei bei internationalen Fußballturnieren danach in der Börsenperformance um ein Viertel schlechter ab als der Durchschnitt aller Teilnehmer: Im Finale geschlagene Länder büßten 0,3 Prozent Wirtschaftswachstum ein. tatistics are to football what Vinho Verde is to summer. That’s why both are happily served up at every suitable opportunity. Someone has figured out that teams dressed in red shirts win more often than those dressed in other colours. Red-clad Portuguese, English and German teams, Benfica, ManU and Bayern, hopeful of the top spot in their respective leagues, all finished the season in second place, putting pay to the claims of statistics. But soon the ball will be rolling all across Europe, bringing new hope with it, and not only on the pitch. The economy is already making advance calculations as to the monetary side effect of each goal. Indeed, the majority of advertising agencies have advised their clients to take a commercial break during the tournament, as heightened competition and strict UEFA restrictions would see earnings fall behind costs. Additionally, Portugal’s government has failed to launch its own business promotion campaign for Euro 2012 as it did in previous international tournaments. The “Força Portugal!” marketing project now only survives in a few fan articles. But you don’t tend to score goals from the offside position. Hence, it’s not just fans waiting for rousing successes from

the players: comparative studies have shown that a nation’s football euphoria has always contributed to economic revival. Portugal’s national soul is undeniably always primed for football, but now the fans are accusing their goal-scoring idols of wastefulness. At home, holiday and Christmas bonuses are cut, taxes are hiked, and even four out of five professional football clubs are in arrears with their salary payments, yet the Seleção has booked a hotel in the Polish town of Opalenica costing €33,000 a day. But that’s not all: the team from recession-nation Portugal is paying more for ist accommodation than any other nation (Germany = €22,500 in Gdansk, England = €19,000 in Krakow). Weekly newspaper Expresso thinks another motto would have been more appropriate: “We play without pay. That’s how we represent our country.” A return to consumer spending is what is needed. Hence there is more at stake than sporting prestige when the national team makes its first Euro 2012 appearance on the pitch in Lviv against Germany on June 9th. Portugal wants to regain the reputation lost by the headlines of its budget deficit. Not just as a goal-hanger, but as a volley shot right into the net - this is how Euro 2012 should revive the Por-
tuguese economy, with more investments, more contracts, and more tourists. Studies have shown that companies that took advantage of the 2004 European Championship as a long-term vehicle for advertising in their own country were “remarkably successful” later on, according to the Department of Trade and Industry. A prime example of this remains to this day football manager José Mourinho’s contract signing in England. His face was subsequently used to successfully market Portugal’s cork industry. Portugal has its sights set on winning in Poland and the Ukraine. The Portuguese Euro 2012 kit emphasises the colour red, but a second place result would be unfavourable for the Portuguese economy: stock markets in runner-up nations in international football tournaments have always performed 25% below the average of all participants, while countries defeated in the final lost 0.3 percent of their economic growth.

n der Algarve kann das Auffinden eines Wohnortes abseits der Hauptstraßen für Polizei, Feuerwehr und Notärzte eine Herausforderung sein, da Hausnummern oder Straßennamen häufig fehlen. Manchmal vereinbaren Leute Treffen mit Notfall-Diensten an Tankstellen oder bestimmten Stellen von Hauptstraßen, um sie von dort zu ihrem Heim zu lotsen. Peter Graf von der Notfallhilfe-Organisation ECDE-International weiß wovon er redet, denn er wohnt selbst ziemlich abgelegen im Hinterland der Algarve. Er kennt viele Residenten, die sich Sorgen, ob sie bei einem Notfall rechtzeitig gefunden werden. ECDE erfasst alle relevanten medizinischen Daten von Residenten, die Mitglieder ihrer Organisation sind und speichert sie in ihrer Datenbank. Den Notfalldiensten werden diese Daten bereitgestellt, inklusive Satellitenkarte mit genauen, farblich markierten Zufahrtswegen und GPS-Koordinaten. Das ASIS genannte System versorgt kostenlos die Notfallzentren. Ruft ein Mitglied die Notrufnummer 112 an, sind auf Knopfdruck alle Daten des Anrufers sichtbar. Gleichzeitig ist das ausrückende Team informiert, so dass jede zusätzliche Unterstützung starten kann. Mitglieder erhalten Ausweiskarte und Aufkleber für ihr Fahrzeug. Bei einem Verkehrsunfall können die Notfalldienste sofort an die nötigen Daten gelangen. Monatliche Mitgliedsbeiträge gibt es ab 4,54 Euro. Kontaktieren von Familienangehörigen (auch in Übersee), Betreuung bzw. Vermittlung zurückgelassener Tiere und, falls nötig, Übersetzungs-Hilfe im Krankenhaus in sechs Sprachen sind zusätzliche Service-Leistungen dieser Nothilfe-Organisation. Hauseigentümer, die ihre Villa an Touristen vermieten, können ihre Gäste als temporäre Mitglieder anmelden. Sie erhalten ebenso eine Karte. Geschieht ihnen etwas, wird ihnen sofort geholfen. ECDE kooperiert mit dem portugiesischen Notfalldienst INEM, welche 400 Ambulanzfahrzeuge und 5 Hubschrauber zur Verfügung haben, so wie mit Feuerwehren, Polizei und dem Roten Kreuz. Die Medizinischen Daten sind strengstens geschützt. Aus Gründen des Datenschutzes hat ECDE die Datenbank in der Schweiz angesiedelt. Die 112-er-Notrufstelle kann die Informationen nicht frei einsehen. Portugiesische Notfalldienste begrüßen die Initiative von ECDE, ebenso der Zivilschutz, welcher bei Katastrophen die Führung übernimmt. n the Algarve it can prove quite a challenge for police, fire-fighters or paramedics to find a house that is located away from main roads, as house numbers or street names are often amiss. Sometimes people arrange to meet emergency services at petrol stations or at a specific spot on a main road in order to guide them to their home. Peter Graf from emergency assistance organisation ECDE International knows what he is talking about, as he lives in a rather isolated part of the Algarve’s hinterland himself. He knows many residents who are concerned about whether they will be found in time in the event of an emergency. ECDE gathers all relevant medical records from residents who are members of their organisation, stores them in their database and then provides the emergency services with this information, including a satellite map with detailed, colourmarked access roads and the GPS coordinates. This system, known as ASIS, delivers the data to emergency centres free of charge. If a member dials the emergency number 112 all the information of the caller is visible at the push of a button. The dispatch team will be informed simultaneously, and can thus begin with any additional support. Members receive an ID card as well as a sticker for their car. In the event of a car accident the emergency services are able to immediately access all necessary information. Monthly membership fees start at €4.54. Contacting family members (including overseas), caring for animals left behind, or finding them a temporary new home and, if required, interpretation services at the hospital in six languages are additional services provided by this emergency assistance organisation. Property owners renting out their villa to tourists can register their guests as temporary members. These will then be provided with a card as well. If anything happens to them they will immediately receive help. The ECDE cooperates with the Portuguese emergency service INEM, which has 400 ambulances and five helicopters at its disposal, as well as cooperating with fire departments, the police and the Red Cross. All medical data are strictly protected. For reasons of data privacy ECDE has based its database in Switzerland. The 112 emergency helpline cannot access this information freely. Portuguese emergency services, or civil defence authorities, which take charge in the event of disasters, welcome the initiative of ECDE. In October the ERTA (the Algarve Tourist Board) officially praised ECDE´s initiative and issued a letter of recommendation.

Die niederländische Malerin, die an Kunst-Akademien in Moskau und Amsterdam studiert hat, ist eine der profiliertesten Künstlerinnen der Algarve. Meinkes bevorzugte Motive sind Menschen, Tiere und Landschaften. Ihre bisher größte Ausstellung beginnt im Juni, da ist sie Special Guest beim Arte Algarve Open V in Lagoa. The Dutch painter, who has studied at art academies in Moscow and Amsterdam, is one of the Algarve’s most prolific artists. People, animals and landscapes are Meinke’s preferred subjects. Her biggest exhibition thus far will start in June, when she is a special guest at the Arte Algarve Open V in Lagoa.
The Beauty of Medusa Toin Adams is an unusual woman with a powerful penchant for classical Greek mythology. Born in Kitwe, Zambia, the Brit has lived in Portugal for many years and it is here that she brings ancient mythology back to life - in the form of oversized statues made from steel, fibreglass, epoxy, glass and concrete. We know how horrible and terrifying beasts such as Argos or the Gorgons have been depicted in art, but with Toin Adams even Medusa, whose glare will turn no one into stone, or the Minotaur, possess something beautiful, noble, almost human. The mythical creatures can be seen in the grounds of Benamor Golf Club from May on, and include a grim winged lion, currently squabbling for territory with the local Muscovy ducks and wild pigeons.

Toin Adams ist eine ungewöhnliche Frau mit einem starken Hang zur klassischen griechischen Sagenwelt. Die in Kitwe, Zambia geborene Britin lebt seit vielen Jahren in Portugal und lässt hier die Mythen der Antike wieder auferstehen – in Form von übergroßen Statuen aus Stahl, Fiberglas, Epoxydharz, Glas und Betonstreben. Man weiß, wie schrecklich und furchteinflößend Untiere wie Argos oder die Gorgonen in der Kunst dargestellt wurden, doch bei Toin Adams haben selbst Medusa, bei deren Anblick niemand zu Stein erstarren wird oder der Minotaurus etwas Schönes, Edles, beinahe Menschlisches. Die Fabelwesen sind seit Mai auf dem Areal des Benamor Golf Clubs in Conceição zu sehen, darunter auch ein grimmiger geflügelter Löwe, der den Warzenenten und Wildtauben das Habitat streitig macht.
Nähkästchen Sewing Club Im São Brás Museum hat sich eine zweite Gruppe für Textilarbeiten gegründet. Hier können Einsteiger erfahreneren Mitgliedern auf die Finger schauen und Fertigkeiten wie Patchwork, Quilten, Applikationsarbeiten, Sticken, Kreuzstich, Klöppeln, Stricken und Häkeln erlernen. Der Europäische Haftbefehl – zehn Jahre Rahmenbeschluss des Rates
W
er im europäischen Ausland lebt, ob ständig als Resident, vorübergehend als Tourist, oder auch nur dort tätig ist, läuft unter Umständen Gefahr, in Konflikt mit dortigen Strafgesetzen zu geraten und Opfer eines europäischen Haftbefehls zur Verfolgung oder Vollstreckung zu werden. Mit seiner Einführung durch alle Mitgliedstaaten in den Jahren ab 2003 in Befolgung des Rahmenbeschlusses des Rates vom 13.6.2002 - in Deutschland zuletzt, da das Bundesverfassungsgericht das erste Gesetz für verfassungswidrig erklärt hatte - kann man sich einer ausländischen strafrechtlichen Verfolgung nicht mehr ohne weiteres durch Rückzug in sein Heimatland entziehen, was bis dato möglich war, da eine Auslieferung eigener Bürger in den meisten Ländern nicht stattfand. Nunmehr werden bei Vorliegen eines europäischen Haftbefehls auf Antrag eines EU-Staates Beschuldigte eines anderen EU-Staates sehr vereinfacht überstellt, wenn schwerwiegende Delikte zur Debatte stehen wie z.B. Drogenhandel, Waffenhandel, Geldwäsche, Geldfälschung, Vergewaltigung, Betrug, Erpressung, Umweltkriminalität und andere. Diese Delikte müssen im Antragsland mit einer Mindeststrafe von 3 Jahren bedroht sein, dann wird im Aufenthaltsland nicht geprüft, ob dort ebenfalls Strafbarkeit vorliegt. Wegen weit geringfügigerer Straftaten (Verdacht reicht!), die mit einer Mindeststrafe von nur einem Jahr bedroht sind und die in beiden Staaten strafbar sind, kann darüber hinaus ein Haftbefehl erlassen werden und dessen Vollstreckung erfolgen. Für Betroffene empfiehlt sich dringend, fachkundigen Beistand schnellstens einzuholen, da kurze Fristen zu beachten sind und die Aufdeckung formaler Fehler,

nicht Angriffe gegen den Tatverdacht als solchen, Erfolg versprechen. Zwischenzeitlich sind mehrere Zehntausende Haftbefehle ergangen und ein Teil davon vollstreckt; der europäische Haftbefehl ist keineswegs bloße Theorie geblieben. Es versteht sich von selbst, dass eine Verteidigung in einem ausländischem Staat mit fremder Rechtsordnung erheblich erschwert ist. Die Hinzuziehung eines Strafverteidigers vor Ort, der die Gesetze und Gepflogenheiten des Auslieferungslandes kennt, wird in der Regel unverzichtbar sein. Auch trotz der Mehrkosten ist die zusätzliche Beauftragung eines im internationalen Strafrecht kundigen Anwaltes aus dem Heimatland - nicht als ausschließlichen Verteidiger - anzuraten, der das Verfahren und die Einhaltung der Regeln und Rechte durch den ausländischenStaatkontrolliertunddieKommunikation zwischen den Verfahrensbeteiligten fördert, so dass das Gefühl des Ausgeliefertseins im doppelten Sinne doch reduziert werden kann. With its introduction by all Member States in the years following 2003 in observance of the Council Framework Decision from 13.6.2002 (the last nation to do so was Germany, as the Federal Constitutional Court declared the first law unconstitutional) it is no longer possible to escape foreign criminal prosecution by simply retreating to your native country - a possibility up till then as most countries would not hand over their citizens. Nowadays if there is a European arrest warrant, accused citizens of another EU country are extradited very simply at the request of an EU state if serious crimes, such as drug trafficking, arms trafficking, money laundering, counterfeiting, rape, fraud, extortion, and other environmental crimes have been committed. All offences punishable with a minimum sentence of 3 years in the country of application do not require checks to ascertain whether the offence is of a criminal nature in the country of residence too. Moreover, for far lesser crimes (suspicion is enough!), which are punishable with a minimum sentence of only one year and are punishable in both states, an arrest warrant may be issued and enforced. For anyone affected it is strongly recommended to seek professional assistance as quickly as possible, as short deadlines must be met and the revelation of technical errors, not countering the suspicion of a crime as such, promise success. In the meantime tens of thousands of arrest warrants have been issued and some of them enforced; the European arrest warrant did not remain mere theory. It goes without saying that defence is considerably more difficult in a foreign country with a foreign legal system. As a rule the involvement of a local defence lawyer who knows the laws and customs of the delivery country will be indispensable. Despite the extra cost the additional appointment of a lawyer from the home country, who understands international criminal law is recommended - not as a sole defender - who controls court proceedings and the compliance of the foreign state with regulations and rights, as well as promoting communication between the parties, so that the feeling of being at the mercy of a foreign state in both senses can be reduced. Wie riecht das Glück? Nach wilden Erdbeeren auf einer sonnendurchfluteten Waldlichtung, nach warmer Tropennacht auf einer Karibikinsel? Wie duftet die Liebe? Nach Rosen im Morgentau, nach einem Hauch von Coco Chanel auf dem Kopfkissen der Geliebten? Riecht Hass nach Blut und Tod nach Novembernebel und weißen Lilien? Kann man gar den Duft von Heimat atmen? Man kann. Durch die Kombination “Geruch-Erinnerung” assoziieren wir wunderschöne Bilder und Gefühle aus Vergangenheit und Gegenwart, die wir mit Menschen, Orten, Gegenständen und Ereignissen in Verbindung bringen. Wir besinnen uns an das Bukett eines purpurroten Burgunders, den man mit Freunden bei Kerzenlicht teilte oder an das unbeschreibliche Aroma von Bratäpfeln, das am Nikolaustag Großmutters Küche erfüllte. Der Mensch lebt durch die Nase. Einzig und allein der Geruchssinn verschafft uns wahren Genuss und Wohlgefühl.
THE SCENT OF HAPPINESS What does happiness smell like? Of wild strawberries in a sunlit forest clearing, of a warm tropical night on a Caribbean island? What does love smell like? Like roses in the morning dew, like a dab of Coco Chanel on a beloved’s pillow? Does hatred smell of blood and death, of November fog and white lilies? Can we even breathe the scent of home? We can. Through the combination “smell-memories” we link beautiful images and feelings from past and present, which we associate with people, places, objects and events. We reflect on the bouquet of a purple Burgundy, which we shared with friends by candlelight or the indescribable aroma of baking cakes, which once filled grandmother’s kitchen. Man lives life through his nose. Only the sense of smell provides us with true pleasure and the sense of well-being.
