As football bids us farewell, life’s path takes us beach bound and to the small summer festivals that the Algarve’s towns are organising for their guests. There’ll be fewer than in previous years, the tourism industry fears - fewer festivals and fewer guests. Come to think of it, do locals see all holidaymakers as one and the same? Do they embody a certain type that returns year after year? Portugal’s sociologists describe the statistically average Algarve tourist as being married, living in a city, and in his mid-forties. He has two children and his social background is upper middleclass. He stays here for two weeks, prefers to eat fish or shellfish, while his children prefer meat. He praises Portuguese wines, but also remains faithful to his home-grown drinking habits (hops please!). Only one thing mars his enjoyment: despite SPF 50+ sunscreen, the sun roasts him good and proper, and he quickly learns why next to no Portuguese are ever seen on the beach at noon. Whether stereotype or not, Algarve Vida reveals this month’s musts for tourists and residents alike.

Es werden weniger sein als in vergangenen Jahren, weniger Feste und weniger Gäste, fĂźrchtet die Tourismus-Industrie. Sind eigentlich fĂźr die Einheimischen alle Reisenden gleich? VerkĂśrpern sie einen alle Jahre wiederkehrender Typus? Portugals Soziologen beschreiben den aus signifikanten Merkmalen geklonten, statistischen Algarve-Reisenden als Städter, verheiratet und Mitte Vierzig. Er hat zwei Kinder und sein sozialer Status liegt im oberen Mittelfeld. Er bleibt zwei Wochen hier, bevorzugt Fisch oder MeeresfrĂźchte, seine Kinder essen Fleisch. Er lobt portugiesische Weine, bleibt aber auch mitgebrachten Trinkgewohnheiten (Gerstensaft!) treu. Nur eines trĂźbt den Genuss: Die Sonne rĂśstet ihn trotz Schutzcreme‑Faktor 50+ und er begreift, warum mittags kaum ein Portugiese am Strand ist. Roger Willemsen Weltweit war Roger Willemsen unterwegs, um seine Enden der Welt zu finden: das Kap von Sßdafrika, Patagonien, der Himalaja, der Nordpol, und sehr individuelle Endpunkte: ein Bordellflur in Bombay, ein Bett in Minsk, eine BehÜrde im Kongo, eine Bahnstation in Birma. Er bestieg einen sibirischen Vulkan, entkam auf Tonga einem Schiffsunglßck, besuchte Tuaregs und Scheintote in Katmandu. Es geht in grandiosen Reisebildern von den Enden der Welt auch um ein Ende der Liebe, der Illusionen, der Ordnung und Verständigung. Um das Ende des Lebens – und um den Neubeginn. Am 12. Die Lisbon Fashion Week ist ein international anerkannter und angesagter Treffpunkt fĂźr Fashionistas. 40.000 besuchten die letzte ModaLisboa, die in Portugals Hauptstadt vier Tage lang Kunst zum Anziehen präsentiert und sehr experimentierfreudig ist. NatĂźrlich haben portugiesische Designer die Nase vorn, doch ist das Event fĂźr die gesamte Modewelt geĂśffnet und wartet regelmäĂ&#x;ig mit vielversprechenden Neuentdeckungen auf. Die Laufstege werden sowohl an altehrwĂźrdig-historischer Stätte aufgebaut, als auch in coolen Lounges, edler Casino-Atmosphäre oder auf einem traditionellen GroĂ&#x;markt. Der Fantasie sind keine Grenzen gesetzt und die ModaLisboa ist nachhaltig: Sie gab Impulse fĂźr die wachsende Zahl erfolgreicher Mode- und Design-Schulen in Portugal. Die nächste ModaLisboa findet vom 11. – 14.10.2012 im PĂĄtio da GalĂŠ statt (www.modalisboa.pt), doch Mode und Design ist ganzjährig zu sehen im Museu da Moda e do Desgin MUDE, Rua Augusta 24 (www.mude.pt). Lisbon’s Fashion Week is an internationally recognized and trendy meeting point for self-respecting fashionistas. The highly experimental fashion show presents the latest clothing designs in Portugal’s capital for four days twice a year, with the last ModaLisboa in March attracting 40,000 visitors. Of course, Portuguese designers enjoy an overwhelming presence, but the event is open to the entire fashion world and regularly comes up with promising new discoveries. The catwalks are set up at time-honoured and historical sites, as well as in cool lounges, elegant casino atmospheres or at a traditional market. There are no limits to the imagination and ModaLisboa is sustainable: it has acted as stimulus to the growing number of successful fashion and design schools in Portugal. The next ModaLisboa is due to take place between October 11th and 14th, 2012 in the PĂĄtio da GalĂŠ (www.modalisboa.pt), however fashion and design can be seen throughout the year at the Museu do Design e da Moda MUDE, Rua Augusta 24 (www.mude.pt).
Roger Willemsen has travelled around the globe to find his World’s Ends. The Cape of South Africa, Patagonia, the Himalayas, and the North Pole, are joined by very individual endpoints: a brothel corridor in Bombay, a bed in Minsk, a public authority in war-torn Congo, a train station in Burma. Willemsen climbed a Siberian volcano, escaped a sea disaster in Tonga, visited the exile of the Tuaregs and the seemingly dead in Kathmandu. These stunning travel pictures from the ends of the world are also about an end of love, illusions, order and understanding; about the end of life - and new beginnings. Zeitreise Ritter, Gaukler, Edelmänner, fahrende Händler, SchlangebeschwĂśrer, rustikales Essen, musikalische Klänge alter Instrumente und verschleierte Tänzerinnen – wer Ende Juli nach Silves kommt, taucht in eine andere Welt ein: Die Feira Medieval verwandelt die StraĂ&#x;en der Stadt und die maurische Burg neun Tage lang in einen Schauplatz aus der Zeit, als Silves die Hauptstadt des KĂśnigreichs Algarve war. Und friedlicher als Ende des 12. Jahrhunderts feiern nun symbolisch verkleidete Christen und Mauren ein altes Sommerfest. Feira Medieval de Silves: 28.7. – 5.8., jew. 18 – 1 Uhr.
Time travel Knights, buskers, noble men, travelling salesmen, snake charmers, rustic food, musical sounds of ancient instruments and veiled dancers – anyone visiting Silves in late July will find themselves immersed in a different world. For nine days the Feira Medieval will whisk the city’s streets and the Moorish castle back to the times when Silves was the capital of the Kingdom of the Algarve. People dressed up as Christians and Moors come together to celebrate this popular summer festival in a much more peaceful way than when they met the end of the 12th Century. Sieben fĂźr Moskau ZwĂślf Nationen und 32 Spiele, alle im Algarve-Stadion. Diesmal geht’s aber nicht um fuĂ&#x;ballerische Superlative, sondern um Rugby. Beim Algarve Sevens qualifizieren sich die fĂźnf besten Teams zur Teilnahme am Sevens Rugby World Cup, der Ende Juni 2013 im Moskauer Luschniki-Stadion stattfindet. Der Wettkampf in der Algarve (darunter Teams aus Deutschland und Schottland) ist das erste Rugbyturnier im Algarvestadion. FĂźr 7er-Rugby ist es gleichzeitig das letzte, denn ab 2016 ist diese Variante des Spiels mit dem elliptischen Ball olympische Diziplin, und es wird keinen World Cup mehr geben. Das entschied die internationale Rugby-Union. Portugals Rugby-Verband wird in diesem Jahr 55 Jahre alt, der Sport wird immer beliebter und in der Algarve gibt es gleich vier Vereine (in Lagos, LoulĂŠ, Vilamoura und Faro). 20. und 21. Twelve nations and 32 games, all playing in the Algarve Stadium. However this time it’s not about football, rather rugby. In the Algarve Sevens, the five best teams will qualify to participate in the Rugby World Cup Sevens, which will take place in Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium at the end of June 2013. The Algarve competition (which besides the Portuguese seven includes teams from Germany and Scotland) is the first rugby tournament taking place in the Algarve Stadium. For rugby sevens, it is also the last, as from 2016 onwards, this version of the game with the elliptical ball will become an Olympic discipline and the World Cup will become a thing of the past, as decided by the International Rugby Board. Portugal’s Rugby Federation will be 55 years old this year. The sport is winning more and more followers, with the Algarve alone boasting four clubs (in Lagos, LoulÊ, Vilamoura and Faro). eder Ort ist anders. Es gibt Orte voller Magie, Schönheit, Charakter, Geheimnisse, Liebe, Energie, Tristesse und abgrundtiefer Abscheulichkeit. Andere muss man suchen, und wenn man sie gefunden hat, will man sie haben und nicht mehr loslassen, weil man glaubt, dort etwas Großes schaffen zu können. Als Mário Faria Pinheiro und Nuno Silva Bicó 2007 vor den Toren Vidigueiras auf die zum Verkauf stehende Herdade do Moinho Branco stießen, wussten sie, dass sie das ideale Terroir gefunden hatten, um hier großartige Weißweine zu erzeugen. Die Region erinnert mit ihren rollenden Hügeln ein bisschen an die Toskana. Seit Jahrhunderten ist diese Gegend zwischen Evora und Beja das landwirtschaftliche Zentrum des Alentejos. Geschützt durch die Bergkette der Serra do Mendro herrscht hier ein Mikroklima mit milden Sommern und stärkeren Niederschlägen, eine Besonderheit im sonst so heißen regenarmen Südportugal. Die beiden Geschäftsmänner gründeten das Unternehmen Ribafreixo, kauften verschiedene zusammenhängende Brachflächen auf, ließen unter Federführung des südafrikanischen Weinbautechnikers David Booth das Land urbar machen und mit jungen Rebstöcken bepflanzen. Verwendet wurden die alten, autochthonen Rebsorten Antão Vaz, deren Trauben sich so wohl für Cuvees, als auch für alkoholbetonte Weißweine eignen, wenn sie reinsortig ausgebaut werden. In ihrem Nachbarn, dem Önologen Paulo Laureano fand das Duo einen kongenialen Partner für das ehrgeizige Ziel Spitzen-Weißweine zu produzieren. Dafür wurden großflächig weitere Sorten angepflanzt: Arinto, eine dem Riesling ähnliche Traube, die eine feine Säure ergibt; Síria, sehr ertragreich und ausschlaggebend für gutes Bouquet; Rabo de Ovelha, eine schlichte anspruchslose Sorte, die ebenfalls alkoholstarke Weine erbringt und Perrum, angeblich mit der Sherry-Traube Palomino verwandt. Unter dem Label Pato Frio kamen 2009 die ersten Weißweine auf den Markt, die zusammen mit dem einzigen Rotwein, dem Barrancôa das

With its rolling hills the region is slightly reminiscent of Tuscany. The area between Évora and Beja has been the agricultural centre of the Alentejo for centuries. Protected by the mountains of the Serra do Mendro it has its own microclimate with mild summers and stronger rainfalls, a peculiarity in this otherwise parched expanse of Southern Portugal. The two businessmen founded their company Ribafreixo, bought various adjoining plots of land, and entrusted South African viticulture technician David Booth with preparing the estate and planting it with young vines. Old, native grape
varieties such as Antão Vaz were used, the grapes of which are suitable for cuvees, and for alcohol emphasized white wines, when produced as a pure varietal. The business owners found a congenial partner for their ambitious goal to produce top white wines in their neighbour, winemaker Paulo Laureano. To achieve this, a large area was planted with more varieties: Arinto, a grape similar to Riesling that produces a fine acidity, Síria, very fruitful and essential for a good bouquet, Rabo de Ovelha, a simple undemanding variety, which also yields strongly alcoholic wines and Perrum allegedly related to the sherry grape Palomino. In 2009 the first whites arrived on the market under the label Pato Frio, forming, together with the only red wine, Barrancôa, Ribafreixo’s initial wine range, which by the end of 2012 will be extended to include newcomers Gaudio Verdelho and Pata Frio Grande Escolha. With its refined taste, the subtle scent of tropical fruits, a slight mineral note and the soft-acidy finish, Pata Frio Selecção 2010 is definitely our favourite. Urs Mayr

eople may come and go and with them times and names may change. Not at the Rouxinol. This former hunting lodge with its huge open fireplace is one of the region’s oldest buildings and has boasted the same name for ages. And nobody knows the bird behind the name (rouxinol is Portuguese for nightingale) better than the natives of Caldas de Monchique, as in spring the beautiful melodious tune of the small songbird fills the shady valley, bringing to mind Romeo and Juliet or Oscar Wilde’s story of The Nightingale and the Rose. Lisa and Stefan Ljung’s guests experience a touch of the fairytale as well, once they have climbed the terrace of the Rouxinol and taken a seat at one of the garden tables. The dishes on offer are as lush and exotic as the flowers surrounding the setting, and include culinary surprises from Brazil, the Caribbean, Spain, Sweden, Guinea-Bissau and of course also from Portugal. The pair of Swedish gastronomes puts great importance on guests feeling at ease and being able to relax over their meal. All products used in the kitchen are sourced locally and their organic credentials are impeccable. As life is never certain, our humorous Swedish host recommends ordering dessert first. The hot raspberry pie with homemade vanilla ice cream and whipped cream is a particular favourite. The wild prawns from the rivers of Guinea-Bissau, allegedly the best in the world, which Stefan serves up on sword-like skewers, provide an amazing spectacle. You would be hard put to find them juicier and tastier anywhere else. The Pão de Monchique starter is absolutely delicious and highly recommended. Its ingredients include goat cheese, honey, violets, strawberries and grapes on a salad, with a grenadine and balsamic reduction. For an after dinner drink the owner likes to offer his own distilled grape liqueur along with a cup of espresso - the near-perfect pairing. Oh yes, the Rouxinol is one ofthose romantic places that you enter as a guest and leave as a friend and lover.

Und niemand kennt den Namenspatron besser als die Einheimischen der Caldas de Monchique, denn im Frühling erfüllt der schöne melodiöse Gesang des kleinen Sperlingsvogels das schattige Tal und mancher fühlt sich erinnert an Romeo und Julia oder an Oscar Wilde’s Geschichte von der Nachtigall und der Rose. Einen Hauch von Märchenwelt erleben auch die Gäste von Lisa und Stefan Ljung, sobald sie die Terrasse des Rouxinol erklommen und an einem der Gartentische Platz genommen haben. So üppig und exotisch wie die allgegenwärtige Blütenpracht, sind auch die angebotenen Speisen, kulinarische Überraschungen aus Brasilien, der Karibik, Spanien, Schweden, Guinea-Bissau und natürlich auch aus Portugal. Das schwedische Gastronomen-Paar legt großen Wert darauf, dass sich die Gäste wohl fühlen und sich Zeit fürs Essen nehmen. Alle in der Küche verwendeten Produkte stammen aus der näheren Umgebung und sind biologisch einwandfrei. Da das Leben unsicher ist, empfiehlt der humorvolle Schwede das Dessert zuerst zu bestellen. Besonders beliebt ist die heiße Himbeertorte mit selbst gemachtem Vanilleeis und Schlagsahne. Ein Hingucker sind die Wildgarnelen aus den Flüssen Guinea-Bissaus, angeblich die besten der Welt, die Stefan auf einem degenartigen Spieß serviert. Saftiger und schmackhafter wird man sie kaum irgendwo anders finden. Sehr lecker und empfehlenswert ist die Vorspeise Pão de Monchique mit Ziegenkäse, Honig, Veilchen, Erdbeeren und Trauben auf Salat, Grenadine und Balsamico-Reduktion. Als Digestif bietet der Patron gerne seinen selbst destillierten Traubenlikör an – zusammen mit einem Tässchen Espresso die nahezu perfekte Paarung. O ja, das Rouxinol ist einer jener romantischen Orte, die man als Gast betritt und als Freund und Liebhaber wieder verlässt.

Caros burros,

iebe Esel! Es hat mich gefreut, eure Bekanntschaft zu machen. Ich hatte bisher keinen blassen Schimmer von eurer Existenz, aber die gemeinsame Wanderung mit dem bunt zusammen gewürfelten Menschenhaufen hat mich doch sehr beeindruckt. Ich war aber – ehrlich gesagt – skeptisch, denn ihr werdet ja auch von Schäfern erfolgreich als Herdenschutzesel gegen Hundeartige eingesetzt. Doch nach dem ersten SchnupperKontakt wusste ich sofort, ihr seid so friedlich wie Lämmchen. Futterneid kann und wird es unter uns auch nicht geben, bevorzugt ihr doch überwiegend Gras, Hafer und Unmengen von Karotten, mit denen ich als Karnivore überhaupt nichts anfangen kann. Ihr seid sehr treue Seelen mit neckischen langen Ohren, mögt Streicheleinheiten, habt keine Höhenangst, eine Mordsgeduld und eine zähe Ausdauer. Nein, Tempo-Bolzer seid ihr nicht. Ihr schätzt den gemütlichen Trott und bestimmt so gesehen die Geschwindigkeit. Nur müsst ihr viel Proviant und Gepäck tragen, doch das macht ihr Esel ja seit Tausenden von Jahren. Sofia von Mentzingen scheint eine gute Rudelführerin zu sein. Bei ihr habt ihr eine echte Zukunftsperspektive und keiner von euch mitunter störrischen Huftieren wird jemals den Kernsatz des Märchens der Bremer Stadtmusikanten wiehern müssen: „Etwas besseres als den Tod findest du überall.“ Die Tour war übrigens vortrefflich gewählt. Ich mag offenes Gelände wie die Ebene Planalto do Rogil mit ihrem Blütenteppich aus Zistrosen, Thymian, Lavendel, Ginster, wildem Fenchel und Erikas. Doch wo waren nur die Iberischen Hasen und Wildkaninchen, meine bevorzugten Beutetiere? Gut, man kann nicht alles haben, dafür entschädigte das friedliche Picknick im Schatten von Schirmpinien und Kiefern und Snacks wie Salami (nicht vom Esel!), Schinken, Käse, Kuchen, Melone, Wein und Wasser, das mein Futterbeschaffer immer dabei hat, wenn wir auf Tour gehen. Er ist quasi mein Wasserträger. 300 Meter südlich von Carreagem/Pedra da Mina sah ich zum ersten Mal im Leben die Unendlichkeit des Ozeans. Freie Sicht bis Amerika. Ihr habt den Zweibeinern mächtig imponiert, denn ihr habt euch gewandt und sehr, sehr trittsicher entlang der Steilhänge und Klippen bewegt, während sie die gigantische Aussicht genossen und sich gegenseitig fotografiert haben. Die spinnen, die Menschen! Der Strand von Amoreira war in der Tat traumhaft, doch ich bin nicht der Typ, der stundenlang in der Sonne liegt. Ich weiß ein Dasein im Schatten mehr zu schätzen. Die Terrasse des Café-Restaurants Paraíso do Mar war dafür bestens geeignet. Draußen an der Brandungslinie lauerten Surfer auf die ideale Welle, um auf ihr an den Strand zu gleiten. Gerne hätte ich ihnen noch ein Weilchen zugeschaut, doch die Wesen aus der Gattung des Homo sapiens mussten ja unbedingt weiter – ihr Aktiv-Programm umsetzen. Der Weg ist bei ihnen das Ziel und dieser führte vorbei an verlassenen Höfen des Monte Amoreira. Da wurdet ihr ganz schön schnell, denn für euch ging es ja nach Hause – zum Ausgangspunkt am Campingplatz Serrão, wo man euch die letzten Karotten vors Maul hielt. Also, mir hat die sogenannte Esel-Wanderung gefallen. Slow is beautiful. Macht’s gut und bis bald. Eure Galga Blanca

I hadn’t the endlessness of the ocean for the first time in my life – a clear faintest idea you existed up to now, but our shared hike view all the way to America. You really impressed the bipeds with that colourful mishmash of humans has left me with your skilful and very sure-footed walk along the cliffs and quite impressed. useta ist überschaubar, gemütlich und genau so kubisch wie die Nachbarstadt Olhão, dennoch völlig anders – ruhiger, intimer, ursprünglicher und vor allem noch sehr traditionell. Die Menschen sind eng verbunden mit dem Meer und zunehmend mit dem Tourismus, denn von den Quais entlang der Avenida Marginal bringen Fährboote und Wassertaxis sonnenhungrige Urlauber hinüber zu den Stränden der Ilha da Armona. Höhepunkt des Sommers ist die Festa Nossa Senhora do Carmo, ein Fest mit Geschichte, denn als in einer stürmischen dunklen Nacht einheimische Fischer draußen auf See verschollen waren, steckten einige entschlossene Einwohner von Fuseta vor der auf einem Hügel gelegenen Dorfkirche alte Boote in Brand, um den Männern draußen ein Signal zu geben. Tatsächlich sahen die vermissten Fischer den Feuerschein und fanden zurück nach Hause. Seit dem wird jedes Jahr vor der Kirche eine Bootsattrappe verbrannt, anschließend feiern Fischer, Einheimische und Besucher eine Woche lang in den Gassen und Kneipen der kleinen Stadt in Erinnerung an diese Rettungsaktion ein fröhliches Fest. Höhepunkt ist die spektakuläre Prozession Dutzender bunt geschmückter Kähne, Kutter und Sportboote von Livramento nach Fuseta. An Bord des Flaggschiffs, die Statue der Lieben Frau vom Berg Karmel. Anschließend pilgern alle Teilnehmer zu Fuß zur Kapelle von Livramento.

useta is compact, cosy and as cubic as its neighbouring city of Olhão, yet it is completely different - quieter, more intimate, more pristine and above all still very traditional. The people enjoy a close relationship with the sea and increasingly with tourism, with ferries and water taxis ferrying sun-seeking tourists over to the beaches of the Ilha da Armona from the quays along the Avenida Marginal. A summer highlight is the Festa da Nossa Senhora do Carmo, a celebration with history. Once upon a time, when some local fishermen were lost out at sea during a dark and stormy night, some determined residents of Fuseta set some old boats on fire in front of the old village church, located on a hill, to create a guiding beacon for the men off the coast. Sure enough the missing fishermen saw the light of the fire and found their way back home. Since then a mock boat is burned in front of the church every year, followed by fishermen, locals and visitors celebrating in the alleys and bars of the small town for one whole week in memory of this act of salvation. The spectacular procession of dozens of colourfully decorated barges, cutters and sport boats from Livramento to Fuseta is a real must-see. The statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel stands aboard the flagship. Afterwards all participants make a pilgrimage walk to the chapel of Livramento.

Abschluss der Renovierung Ende 2008 ist ein moderner Kulturtempel gleichsam aus den alten Mauern des Palácio Sárrea und über ihn hinausgewachsen: Das Stadttheater TEMPO mit Ausstellungs-, Theater- und Konzertsälen. Nun gilt es, zu entscheiden, welcher Teil des Freilichtmuseums Portimão als nächstes besichtigt werden soll: Nach Norden zum Zentrum hin kommt man vorbei an vielen Häusern, deren leider oft verwitterte Jugendstil-, Art Decound Eklektizismus-Fassaden an vergangene Zeiten der Stadt als Heimat (erfolg-)reicher Fabrikanten erinnern. Es geht weiter zur Igreja do Colégio an der Alameda (svw. Park oder Allee), an der zwar die Begrünung spärlich ist, dafür aber der Blick frei wird auf das seitliche Kirchenportal im manuelinischen Stil. Wendet man sich nach Süden, zum Arade-Fluss, dann fällt entlang der Uferpromenade eine Skulpturen-Reihe auf, die von der Eisenbahnbrücke aus dem Jahr 1915 bis zum Yacht-Club reicht, dessen acht Jahre junges Gebäude die Architektin Lúcia Rafael einem Segelschiff nachempfunden hat. Die Skulpturen gehen auf eine Initiative des Bildhauers Arlindo Arez zurück, der seit 2001 Workshop-Biennalen veranstaltete und Kollegen aus der ganzen Welt dazu einlud, die Inspirationen zu gestalten, die Portimão und die Algarve in ihnen weckten. Gleich am Yacht-Club steht die ehemalige Sardinenfabrik Feu, heute das t Alcalar

städtische Museum von Portimão, bei dem nicht nur das Innenleben zu einem Besuch ohne Zeitnot einlädt: Das Gebäude erinnert an die Epoche, als die Stadt vom Sardinenfang gut lebte und eine florierende Konserven-Industrie betrieb. Aus der Zeit stammt auch der rostige Industrie-Kran, 1947 aufgestellt, und heute das einzige Exemplar der Industriegeschichte in der Algarve. Noch älter ist die Antiga Lota, das ehemalige Fischauktions-Haus am entgegengesetzten Ende der Promenade. ortimão ist ein historisches Fleckchen Erde, entstanden als Siedlung der Phönizier. Es gibt Spuren aus der Kupferzeit, die man nordöstlich der Stadt bei Alcalar und Monte Canelas besichtigen kann, die Römer bauten Straßen und siedelten hier. Das maurische Erbe ist nur noch an wenigen Schornsteinen zu erkennen, die Minaretten ähneln, und an einigen Fensterformen. Moderne Zeiten brachen an, als ab 1890 die ersten Konservenfabriken die Hafen- und Fischerstadt industrialisierten und veränderten. Von all dem ist kaum etwas geblieben. Heute beherrschen Handel und Tourismus die 45.000-Einwohner-Stadt. Das Bild vom modernen Portimão scheint nichts von einem Freilichtmuseum zu haben, und doch findet der Spaziergänger an nahezu jeder Weggabelung ein Stück KulturGeschichte, die heute weitergeschrieben wird. Zum Beispiel der kleine Park am Largo 1º de Dezembro. Er wurde Anfang der 1930er Jahre angelegt, ein seltenes Zeugnis detailverliebter, stadtplanerischer Gestaltung. Unter Jugendstil-Laternen und im Schatten immergrüner Ranken stehen Parkbänke, die mit blau-gelben Azulejos verziert und Stein gewordene Geschichtsbücher sind. Sie geben die Schlacht bei Aljubarrota wieder, in der 1385 die Soldaten des Königs D. João I mit Hilfe englischer Söldner die Spanier besiegten, Vasco da Gamas Ankunft in der indischen Hafenstadt Calicut 1489, bis hin zur Ausrufung der Republik 1910. Das kleine Karree mit dem Park hieß damals Praça do Município. Der Name bezieht sich auf das Gebäude an der Nordseite, der frühere Palácio Sárrea, einst das Herz der Stadt: In ihm war das Rathaus untergebracht, die Nationalgarde, Notar und Standesamt und sogar eine Primarschule und die Bibliothek. Sie alle sind längst ausgezogen und seit dem
eginning life as a Phoenician settlement, Portimão is a historic corner of the planet. Remains still exist from the Copper Age, which can be visited at Alcalar and Monte Canelas, northeast of the city, while the Romans built roads and settled here. The city’s Moorish heritage is now only visible in a few chimneys resembling minarets, and in the shape of some windows. Modern times dawned with the opening of the first canning factories from 1890 onwards, industrialising and irreversibly changing the port and fishing town. Little remains of this past. Nowadays trade and tourism dominate the city of 45,000 inhabitants. The image of modern Portimão may seem to have little in
common with an open-air museum, and yet as you stroll through its streets you find a piece of cultural history at almost every fork in the road; and this history continues to be written today. A fine example is the small park in the Largo 1º de Dezembro. The park was created in the beginning of the 1930s, a rare example of urban planning design with a love for detail. Park benches, decorated with blue and yellow azulejos stand underneath Art Nouveau lamps and in the shade of evergreen vines like history books turned into stone. They show the Battle of Aljubarrota, in which the soldiers of King D. João I defeated the Spaniards with the help of British mercenaries in 1385; Vasco da Gama’s arrival in the Indian port of Calicut in 1489; all the way up to the Proclamation of the Republic in 1910. Back then this small square with the park was called Praça do Município. The name refers to the building on the north side, the former Palácio Sárrea, once the heart of the city and once home to the City Hall, the National Guard, notary and registry office and even a primary school and the library. They all have long since moved out and since the completion of the renovation in late 2008 a temple of modern culture has grown from the ancient walls of the Palacio Sárrea and beyond it: The TEMPO City Theatre with exhibition, theatre and concert halls. Now it’s time to decide which part of the Portimão open-air museum should be visited next: a stroll northwards, to the centre takes you past many houses, with their weathering Art Nouveau, Art Deco and eclectically styled façades recalling former times when the city was home to
successful and wealthy factory owners. Further on you reach the Igreja do Colégio on the Alameda (which essentially means park or avenue) where the sparseness of vegetation has the advantage of opening up the view to the church’s side door in the Manueline style. Turning south, towards the River Arade, a row of sculptures along the waterfront grabs your attention, reaching from the railway bridge built in 1915 to the yacht club, a building constructed eight years ago and designed by architect Lúcia Rafael, who took her inspiration from a sailing ship. The sculptures date from an initiative by sculptor Arlindo Arez, who has been holding workshop Biennials since 2001 and has invited colleagues from around the world to give shape to what inspires them about Portimão and the Algarve. Right next to the Yacht Club stands the former Feu sardine factory, now the Municipal Museum of Portimão, worthy of a leisurely visit for much more than just its inner attractions: the building brings to mind the era in which the city was flourishing through sardine catching and operated a thriving canning industry. The industrial crane, erected in 1947, also stems from this time, and today is the only example of industrial history in the Algarve. Even older is the Antiga Lota, the former fish auction house at the opposite end of the promenade. It is a listed building and occasionally opens for exhibitions and concerts. Henrietta Bilawer

tädte schmücken sich mit unterschiedlichen Dingen: Mit ihrer Umgebung, mit Sagen und Legenden, mit Straßen, Plätzen, Kathedralen – und natürlich mit bedeutenden Mitmenschen, die daselbst geboren wurden oder dort gelebt haben, und die durch ihre Biografie zu Persönlichkeiten geworden sind. Die Stätten, an die sich deren Leben und Schaffen band, sind meist mit Architektur verknüpft, und in besonderen Glücksfällen macht diese Architektur sogar von selbst auf sich aufmerksam. So bieten manchenorts ein weiträumiger Park mit Herrenhaus oder ein Palast anschaulichen Hinweis auf wichtigen Wohnsitz. Doch weitaus häufiger sind es bescheidenere Bauwerke, die zu Geburts- und Wirkungsstätten wurden, und die Stadt, die dort angemessen zu ehren gedenkt, wird auf Bronzetafeln und Prospekte zurückgreifen, um stolz zu verkünden: Hier und deshalb preisen wir einen Bürger unserer Stadt! Manchmal entsteht daraus mehr und Schöneres als ein bloßes Denkmal. So geschehen und praktiziert mit dem Geburtshaus Manuel Texeira Gomes´ in Portimão. Direkt im Zusammenhang mit den Taten und Ambitionen des hier Geborenen wurde es über den Anlass hinaus um vielfältige Aspekte kultureller und kommunikativer Nützlichkeit erweitert. Denn Manuel Texeira Gomes, der am 27. Mai 1860 das Licht der Welt erblickte, war nicht nur von 1923-1925 der siebte Präsident der Ersten Portugiesischen Republik, sondern außerdem ein engagierter Diplomat, ein Dichter und Publizist, der seiner Heimatstadt, die ihn als ihren größten Sohn verehrt, am 11. Dezember 1924 die Stadtrechte verlieh.

Zwar macht das Haus äußerlich als Wahrzeichen eher bescheiden auf sich aufmerksam, aber als Stätte kreativer Begegnung sowie als Schauplatz künstlerischer Ereignisse hat sich das Casa Manuel Texeira Gomes bereits einen internationalen Namen gemacht. Es befindet sich unweit des Arade-Ufers, in unmittelbarer Nachbarschaft des Palácio Bivar und des Palacete Sárrea Garfias. Die Arbeitsräume und Bibliotheken Texeira Gomes´ sind, nach Vorabsprache, auch unter sachkundiger Führung durch freundliches Personal zu besichtigen, und hier im ehemaligen Wirkungsbereich des Autors und Politikers finden sich ergiebige Quellen regionaler und städtischer Aufzeichnungen und Dokumentationen. Aber auch ein ganz spontaner Besuch

im Casa Manuel Texeira Gomes ist unbedingt lohnend: Ein offener Torbogen lädt zum Betreten ein und begrüßt den Besucher mit einem kunstvoll geschmiedeten Stammbaum der Familie. Ein Feigenbaum, nicht nur, weil die Feige als Lebensbaum in vielen Kulturen und Religionen eine Rolle spielt, sondern hintergründigerweise auch, weil die Wohlhabenheit der Familie auf dem europaweiten Handel mit den getrockneten Früchten basierte. Der Durchgang bietet zur rechten und zur linken Einlass in die Veranstaltungs- und Ausstellungsräume, in denen regelmäßig Schulungen, Konferenzen und Konzerte stattfinden, die längst fester Bestandteil des kulturellen Lebens der Stadt geworden sind. Die enge Zusammenarbeit mit anderen kulturellen Einrichtungen der Algarve und Portugals gehört ganz selbstverständlich zum Engagement des Hauses und mündet unter anderem in abwechslungsreiche Ausstellungen von Fotografie, Malerei und Grafik sowie Skulptur und Design, die hier einen ansprechenden Rahmen finden. ities adorn themselves with all manner of things: with their surroundings, with myths and legends, with streets, squares, cathedrals - and of course with noteworthy individuals, who were born in them or have lived there, and who have become personalities through the experiences of their life story. The sites associated with their life and work usually have an architectural relevance too, and in especially fortunate cases, this architecture represents an attraction in its own right. Thus many a place reveals the importance of a residence with an extensive park containing a stately home or a palace. But far more often fate deems that such people are born in or work in more modest buildings, and the city, intent on honouring them in the appropriate manner, relies on bronze plaques and pamphlets, to proudly proclaim: Here and for this reason we praise a citizen of our city! Sometimes this creates something greater and more beautiful than a mere memorial. And this is certainly the case of Manuel Teixeira Gomes’ birthplace in Portimão. In direct relation to the actions and aspirations of the person born in it, the building’s functions have been expanded beyond its initial purpose, adding many aspects of cultural and media interest. For Manuel Teixeira Gomes, born on May 27th, 1860 was not only the seventh president of the First Portuguese Republic from 1923-1925, but also a committed diplomat, a poet and publicist, who elevated his hometown, which honours him as its greatest son, to the status of city on December 11th in 1924. As a landmark, the building may perhaps have a modest appearance from the outside, but the Casa Manuel Teixeira Gomes has already gained international recognition as a creative meeting place and as a venue for artistic events. It is located near the banks of the River Arade, not far from the Palácio Bivar and the Palacete Sárrea Garfias. If you book in advance, you can visit Texeira Gomes’ workrooms and libraries and enjoy expert guidance from friendly staff. Here we find that the author and former politician’s sphere of action proves to be a rich source for regional and municipal records and documentation. But even a spur-of-the-moment visit to the Casa Manuel Teixeira Gomes is definitely worth the effort: an open archway invites you to enter and welcomes the visitor with an artistically forged family tree. A fig tree, not only because the fig tree, as the tree of life, plays a part in many cultures and religions, but also referring to the wealth of the family being based on the Europe-wide trade of dried fruit. To the right and left the passageway takes you into the event and exhibition rooms, where training sessions, conferences and concerts are regularly held, which have long since become an integral part of the city’s cultural calendar. Close collaboration with other cultural institutions in the Algarve and around Portugal is quite naturally part of the house’s commitment and this leads, amongst other things, to a varied line-up of exhibitions highlighting photography, painting and graphics, as well as sculpture and design, each of which enjoy the qualities of this attractive venue. The group is currently sponsoring Ana Beatriz Ferreira, who is able to pursue piano studies in her second year at the London

Die Amigos de Musica de São Lourenço machen bereits seit über 20 Jahren Musik und werden diese Tradition auch in Zukunft in der SãoLourenço-Galerie fortsetzen. Das neue Mitgliedschaftsjahr beginnt im September 2012 und mit ihm auch die ersten Konzerte: am 5. und 8.9. gibt sich der Cellist Tim Hugh, unter Begleitung von Pianist/ Geiger Nazarova die Ehre, und am 10. und 13. Oktober präsentiert Constantin Sandu sein äußerst virtuoses Klavierprogramm. Im Laufe des vergangenen Mitgliedschaftsjahres sahen sich die Amigos erheblichen Turbulenzen ausgesetzt: Präsident Barry Shaw erlag am 24. Mai seiner Krankheit und zudem stand der gewohnte Veranstaltungsort, das Centro Cultural, im Umbruch. Mittlerweile wurde eine neue (Zwischen-) Leitung für die Galerie gefunden und die neue Präsidentin verrät mit großer Freude, dass die Amigos auch weiterhin dort musizieren werden. Derzeit wird bereits ein abwechslungsreiches Programm für das nächste Jahr zusammengestellt, welches u.a. einen Auftritt des Gitarristen Craig Ogden im Frühling verheißt. This exhibition is the third and last from the Paisagens do Pensamento cycle and is held under the patronage of the Polish Embassy in Lisbon. On display are works by five artists from different regions of Portugal: Henryka Woerle, Algarve; Mariola Landowska and Ania Stankiewicz, Lisbon; Kasia Gubernat and Jacek Krenz, Oporto.

s war der längste Tag des Jahres, ein heiterer Tag erfüllt mit Musik, Lachen, Schönheit, Tanz, Prêtà-porter-Modenschauen, Köstlichkeiten aus Keller und Küche, sportlichen Aktivitäten und jeder Menge Überraschungen. Und alles diente einem guten Zweck, denn sämtliche Erlöse aus Eintrittsgeldern und Verkauf flossen in die Kassen der Algarve Onkologie Assoziation (AOA), um deren neues Projekt Casa Flor das Dunas, ein Hostel in Faro, zu finanzieren. Gleichzeitig feierte auch Gastgeber Vila Vita Parc mit diesem glanzvollen Glamour Day sein 20-jähriges Jubiläum als führendes 5-Sterne-Hotel der Algarve. Für die zahlreichen Gäste und Teilnehmer ein Grund sich entsprechend extravagant zu präsentieren. Außer beim Ladies’ Day in Ascot dürfte man sonst nirgendwo ausgefallenere Hut- und Mode-Kreationen sehen, als an diesem wunderbaren 21. Juni im Vila Vita Parc Resort & Spa.

t was the longest day of the year, a bright day filled with music, laughter, beauty, dance, prêt-à-porter fashion shows, treats from the cellar and the kitchen, sports activities and a host of surprises. And everything served a good purpose, as all proceeds from entrance fees and sales filled the coffers of the Algarve Oncology Association (AOA), to finance their new project Casa Flor das Dunas, a hostel in Faro. Host Vila Vita Parc also used this glorious Glamour Day to celebrate its 20th anniversary as a leading 5-star hotel in the Algarve. For the many guests and participants this was enough reason to dress up in an accordingly extravagant fashion. Apart from Ladies Day at Ascot, you would be hard pushed to see so many outlandish hats and fashion creations anywhere else than at Vila Vita Parc Resort & Spa on this wonderful midsummer’s day. Her move from London, where she collaborated with leading dance DJs, to the calmer surrounds of the Algarve coincided with her discovery of Bossa Nova. Together with her band, she has developed a sultry sound that can best be described as ‘Beach Samba’ of Brazil in the 70s. in Hoch auf Vasco da Gama und sein Näschen für die feinen Aromen des Orients, denn als er am 8. Oktober 1498 die indische Malabar-Küste verließ und nach Lissabon zurück segelte, war seine São Gabriel voll beladen mit kostbaren Gewürzen, darunter Pfeffer, Zimt, Kardamon, Koriander, Kurkuma, Bockshornklee, Gewürznelken, Muskat, Kreuzkümmel und Ingwer. Diese ungeheuer wertvolle Ladung revolutionierte nicht nur die Gastronomie, sondern macht den mutigen Entdecker zu einem sehr reichen Mann. Richtig dosiert bringen Gewürze nicht nur Exotik und Abwechselung in die Küche, sie eignen sich auch als Konservierungsmittel und lassen sich gezielt in der Heilkunde einsetzen. Hier ein paar Beispiele: Kurkuma, auch Gelbwurz genannt, färbt nicht nur Curry-Mischungen, sondern lindert Entzündungen der Augenhaut und hilft bei Rheumaerkrankungen. Ingwer ist ein probates Mittel gegen Reisekrankheiten, regt den Appetit an, wirkt gegen Krämpfe und Blähungen und kann als Pulver erfolgreich gegen Migräne eingesetzt werden. Pfeffer, egal ob weiß, schwarz, rosa oder grün, enthält Piperin, einen Wirkstoff, der fiebersenkend und schweißtreibend wirkt und die Durchblutung steigert. Das Öl der Gewürznelken wurde lange Zeit in der Zahn-medizin verwendet, da das darin enthaltene Eugenol stark antimikrobiell wirkt. Nelkenöl hilft gut nach Insektenstichen – es lindert den Juckreiz. Nuss und Blüte der Muskatnuss werden nicht nur wegen ihrer Aromen geschätzt, auch als Hausmittel bei Appetitlosigkeit und Durchfall. Kreuzkümmel oder Kummin ist eines der wichtigsten Gewürze Indiens, er regt die Verdauung an und fördert die Magensekretion. Die ätherischen Öle des Korianders lösen Krämpfe und fördern ebenfalls die Verdauung, besonders bei schweren Gerichten wie Kohl-, Kartoffel- und Wurzelgemüse. Mit Kardamon lassen sich Tee, Kaffee und Süßspeisen, sowie Currys und Lammfleisch würzen, aber auch Husten, Heiserkeit und Bronchitis bekämpfen. heers to Vasco da Gama and his nose for the subtle aromas of the Orient, because when he left the Indian Malabar coast to sail back to Lisbon on October 8th 1498, his ship, the São Gabriel, was laden with precious spices, amongst them pepper, cinnamon, cardamom, coriander, turmeric, fenugreek, cloves, nutmeg, cumin and ginger. This incredibly valuable cargo not only revolutionized gastronomy, but also made this brave explorer a very rich man. In the right doses spices not only add exoticism and variety to the kitchen, but they also make good preservatives and can be used in alternative medicine. Here are some examples: Turmeric, also known as curcuma, not only colours curry blends, but also relieves inflammation of the white of the eye and rheumatic diseases. Ginger is an effective remedy against travel sickness, cramps and bloating. It stimulates the appetite, and can be successfully used as a powder to treat migraines. Pepper, whether white, black, pink or green, contains piperine, a substance that acts as an antipyretic and diaphoretic and increases circulation. Clove oil has been used in dentistry for a long time, as it contains eugenol, which has a strong antimicrobial effect. Clove oil is also very beneficial for insect bites as it relieves the itching. The nut and the flower of the nutmeg are not only appreciated for their flavour, but also as a home remedy for a lack of appetite and diarrhoea. Cumin is one of India’s most important spices; it aids digestion and gastric secretion. The essential oils of coriander act as an antispasmodic and also aid digestion, especially with heavy dishes such as cabbage, potatoes and root vegetables. Cardamom can be used to spice tea, coffee and desserts, as well as to flavour curries and lamb, but also to fight coughs, hoarseness and bronchitis. he Troika’s verdict on Portugal’s development with the financial assistance of the IMF, the ECB and the EU Commission has proved positive so far. According to Poul Thomsen, deputy director of the IMF’s European Department, the economic malaise of the country is “solely of a structural nature,” and success would rely on an urgent need to increase exports. The foreign press, in particular, is busy speculating what Portugal could produce that the world would buy. The Centro de Genética Clínica private clinic in Lisbon and Oporto was founded as Portugal’s first genetics laboratory in 1992. Today 100 specialists carry out genetic testing and provide expertise mainly for clients in Spain and Japan, the U.S. and in Arab states. Although this name has not brought any significant increase in business, it has however opened doors, says lab director Purificação Tavares. She has gained customers who “were working with British and U.S. laboratories” before. The products made by the company Damel, based in Póvoa de Varzim, are a common sight yet still largely unknown. Together with nearly 200 employees Paula and Vítor Paiva produce high-performance sportswear. Their clients include BMW, Ferrari and Ducati. Formula 1 stars such as Fernando Alonso, motorcycle champion Casey Stoner and their racing team technicians wear special jackets made in Portugal. In Ponte de Lima, Alcides and Vítor Silva process meat, which their company Carsiva then ships to Spain, Angola, São Tomé and Cape Verde. Carsiva aims to have customers in all Portuguese-speaking countries by 2015: “The only way forward is internationalisation.” Carsiva has won awards for being an innovative firm with 70 highly specialized butchers and food experts. “You can only succeed with highly trained people,” the company boss explains. Recently the Financial Times reported on black toilet paper from the Portuguese company Renova, which looks set to gain cult status in England, and on Portuguese shoes from Helsar: Mother and Pippa Middleton wore them at Kate and Prince William’s wedding. The manufacturer of the noble footwear, Jorge Correia, confirms that the rest of the world is not quite ready to believe in Portugal’s export power yet. amstag bin ich mal wieder mit meiner Frau zum Markt in Olhão gefahren und noch bevor wir die Halle betraten, wurden sie mir farbenfroh und wortreich angeboten, die Shirts mit dem Krokodil und dem Mann auf dem Pferd – für zehn Euro das Stück! Klar, dass das keine Originale waren, sondern Fälschungen, die in vielfältiger Weise gegen Gesetze verstoßen. Nur ein winziger und vergleichsweise harmloser Bruchteil eines internationalen Phänomens, das zunehmend Arbeitsplätze vernichtet und einen enormen volkswirtschaftlichen Schaden verursacht, denn gefälscht wird in allen Bereichen: Bekleidung, Medikamente, Software, Ersatzteile für Autos und Maschinen etc. Nach Feststellung der Europäischen Kommission entfällt ein Grossteil der in Umlauf gebrachten Fälschungen auf die Ströme emsiger Touristen, die sich Urlaubssouvenirs mitbringen und dadurch kriminellen Vereinigungen satte Gewinne einbringen. EU-Kommission und EU-Mitgliedstaaten kämpfen deshalb seit nunmehr fast zwei Jahrzehnten an verschiedenen Fronten praktischer wie rechtlicher Art darum, dem Schutz geistigen Eigentums mehr Gewicht zu verschaffen. Strafrechtliche Sanktionen treffen meist nur den Hersteller und Vertreiber illegaler Ware wegen gewerblicher vorsätzlicher Taten. Gegen die kleinen alltäglichen Käufe zum Eigengebrauch haben die Staaten bisher allenfalls geringe Sanktionen vorgesehen, eine Verzollung, aber auch Einziehung, allerdings kommt – ebenso wie

which violate the law on many fronts. This is only the very tip of the iceberg of this international phenomenon, increasingly destroying jobs and causing enormous economic loss, with fake products appearing across the board: clothing, medicine, software, spare parts for cars and machinery, etc. The European Commission has established that most copies come from currents of diligent tourists, returning from their holidays laden with souvenirs and thus creating huge profits for criminal organisations. Hence the EU Commission and EU Member States have been fighting on several fronts, on a practical and a legal level for nearly two decades, in an attempt to give more weight to the protection of intellectual property. Thus, as part of an overall strategy, existing Council Regulation (EC) No. 1383/2003 is to be amended by the addition of a new regulation, while the scope of application is to be extended. In particular, amongst others, controls are to be simplified and the destruction of illegal goods is to be fast tracked. Measures prescribed by civil and customs law are underpinned by criminal measures as a result of the EU Directive implemented in 2007. Everything has proved very sluggish and with only limited success, resulting primarily from the high costs and risks for the property right owner, and with reference to the enforcement of existing claims for injunctive relief, claims for disclosure and claims for damages. Criminal liability mostly only affects the manufacturer and distributor of illegal products due to intentional commercial offences. So far only minor penalties at best are stipulated against minor, daily purchases for personal use. However duty payment, and also confiscation, as well as a fine in some countries are possible.
