Der August ist Portugals traditioneller Urlaubsmonat. Etwa jeder zweite Portugiese will sich zwei Wochen Auszeit im eigenen Land gönnen, auch wenn dabei gespart werden muss. Der US-Literaturforscher Theodore Ziolkowski setzte sich mit dem Thema auseinander und fragte sich, ob es überhaupt noch möglich sei, einem Ort unvermittelt zu begegnen, einen Platz völlig ohne Vorwissen zu besuchen. Wohin man auch komme, es sei doch schon jemand da gewesen: Reiseredakteure, Literaten, ein Maler, der die Landschaft in Aquarell fasste oder der Nachbar mit dem Fotoapparat. Ute Lemper Die „letzte Diva des europäischen Cabarets“, Ute Lemper, Chanson-Sängerin und Musical-Dastellerin, kommt nach Faro. Im Teatro das Figuras (2.8.; 22 Uhr) präsentiert sie ihr Programm „Paris Days, Berlin Nights“, unter anderem mit Liedern von Kurt Weill und George Gershwin, Jacques Prevert und Jacques Brel bis zu Tom Waits und Elvis Costello. Das Algarve-Orchester unter Leitung von Cesário Costa begleitet Ute Lemper bei diesem Querschnitt durch Chansons eines Jahrhunderts. Das Konzert findet im Rahmen des von der Caixa Geral de Depósitos organisierten Musiksommers, in dem außerdem die „Magie des Musicals“ hervorgezaubert wird: Das Algarve-Orchester unter John Avery spielt Musik verschiedener Generationen von Richard Rogers über Andrew Lloyd Webber bis Abba (11.8., 22 Uhr, Auditório Municipal de Portimão) Ute Lemper, the “last diva of European cabaret”, chanson singer and musical performer comes to Faro. Researchers at the Algarve University want to suppress the development of males in the aquaculture breeding of sea bass (robalo). Adelino Canário from the Centro de Ciências do Mar (CCMAR) explained that this would serve to balance populations in fish farms, as males develop significantly more numerously from spawn in the breeding pond than female fish. The reason for this is that the water temperature is higher in farms than in nature. Higher numbers and temperatures in the pools also constrict the further development of the male specimens. This has been tested in small zebra fish, with the mutation meant to achieve better breeding results without the addition of genetic material from other species. The breeders are working at the EU-funded “life cycle” project together with other universities in Europe. The underlying long-term strategy is to produce sufficient food destined fish in Europe itself, in order to reduce imports as well as avoiding the overfishing of coastal waters through a sufficient supply of fish from aquaculture. 6

Grüne Polizei Green Police Als erste Polizei-Einheit der Welt hat die Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP) einen Teil ihres Fuhrparks mit Elektro-Autos ausgestattet: Acht Wagen vom Typ Nissan LEAF gehören jetzt zur Equipe „Escola Segura“, die für die Sicherheit von Kindern im Bereich der Schulen sorgt und dort auch Verkehrserziehung durchführt. Sie fahren emissionsfrei. PSP-Chef Paulo Valente Gomes will damit dazu beitragen, dass die Luft in den Innenstädten reiner wird und Portugals CO2Bilanz weiter verbessert wird. Der Nissan Leaf ist erst seit Ende 2010 auf dem Markt, hat aber in dieser Zeit bereits beachtlichen Zuspruch gewonnen und wird als Stadtwagen immer häufiger gekauft.

Forscher der Algarve-Universität wollen bei der Zucht von Wolfsbarschen (robalo; seabass) in Aquakultur die Entstehung von Männchen unterdrücken. Adelino Canário vom Centro de Ciências do Mar (CCMAR) erklärte, dies diene dem Gleichgewicht im Fischteich, denn im Zuchtbecken entwickelten sich männliche Tiere aus dem Laich bedeutend zahlreicher als weibliche Fische. Der Grund dafür ist die Wassertemperatur, die in Aquakulturen höher ist als in der Natur. Überzahl und Wärmegrad im Teich behindern auch die weitere Entwicklung der männlichen Exemplare. Getestet wurde das Ganze an kleinen Zebrafischen; die Mutation soll bessere Zuchtergebnisse ohne Hinzufügung genetischen Materials anderer Arten ermöglichen. Die Züchter arbeiten gemeinsam mit anderen Universitäten in Europa an dem EU-geförderten Projekt „Lifecycle“. Dahinter steckt die langfristige Strategie, Speisefisch in ausreichendem Maße in Europa selbst zu produzieren, einerseits Importe zu reduzieren und zum anderen durch ein ausreichendes Angebot an Fischsorten aus Aquakultur die Überfischung der Küstengewässer zu vermeiden.

eit etwa 7.000 Jahren segeln die Menschen. Sie entdeckten und eroberten mit Segelschiffen neue Welten. Gewiss, die Zeiten der wagemutigen Entdecker sind vorbei, doch noch immer hegen viele Zivilisationsmüde den Traum dem Alltag zu entfliehen und mit einer Yacht die Welt zu umsegeln. Um die Faszination „Segeln“ hautnah zu erleben, braucht man kein eigenes Boot. Für den Anfang reichen ein erfahrener Skipper und ein paar Stunden auf einer Charteryacht. Der ehemalige Auswanderer-Coach Günter Lukas segelt von Portimão aus mit seiner Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 47 vor der Algarveküste. Das Schiff bietet bis zu zehn Gästen ausreichenden Komfort. Wer mag, kann aktiv mitsegeln oder einfach nur auf dem Sonnendeck entspannen und aus einer neuen Perspektive die Strände, Klippen und Felsformationen der Ponte da Piedade vorüberziehen lassen. Anker- und Badestops in einer der kleinen versteckten Buchten sind willkommene Unterbrechungen eines solchen Törns. Richtig romantisch wird es, wenn am Abend die Sonne im Meer versinkt, der Himmel in Gold, Rot und Violett leuchtet, eisgekühlter Champagner gereicht wird und die Yacht mit vollen Segeln vor dem Wind läuft. Spannend ist es, wenn die TENDERLY hart am Wind segelt und eine Schräglage von mehr als 40 Prozent erreicht, dann konfrontieren fast alle Erstseglern den Skipper mit der bangen Frage: „Wird das Boot kentern?“ Doch das ist völlig unmöglich und nur denkbar, sollte eine Monsterwelle (wie im Film Poseidon) auf das Boot zurasen, doch die wird es hier nie geben. Mit dieser Erklärung sind dann alle zufrieden und entspannen sich wieder. Und wenn die Yacht dann Kurs auf die Arade-Mündung nimmt, wenig später an ihrem Liegeplatz in der Tivoli Marine festmacht, sind alle froh, bei diesem Törn dabei gewesen zu sein. Marius Müller

The times of daring explorers are certainly behind us, but many people tired of civilisation still harbour the dream to escape from everyday life and to sail around the world on a yacht. In order to experience the fascination of sailing first hand, you don’t need your own boat. As a taster, an experienced skipper and a few hours on a charter yacht is quite enough. Günter Lukas glides along the Algarve coast on his Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 47, setting sail from Portimão. The ship offers sufficient comfort for up to ten guests. Those who feel like it can take an active part in the sailing, but you can also just relax on the sun deck and enjoy a new perspective of the beaches, cliffs and rock formations of the Ponta da Piedade as they pass by. Dropping anchor and stopping for a swim in one of the small hidden bays are welcome interruptions of such a trip. Then it becomes really romantic when the evening sun sinks into the sea and the sky is glowing in gold, red and violet light, when chilled champagne is served and the boat is running at full sail downwind. When the “Tenderly” sails close to the wind and reaches an inclination of more than 40 percent it can be quite exciting and nearly all first time sailors confront the skipper with the anxious question: “won’t the boat capsize?” But this is absolutely impossible and only feasible, should a monster wave hurtle towards the boat (like in the film Poseidon), hardly likely here. Everyone is happy with this explanation and can relax again. And when the boat then heads for the Arade estuary, and moors at her berth in the Tivoli Marina a short time later, everyone is glad to have participated in this trip. Marius Müller

Situated between the Ria de Alvor wetlands and the hills of Monchique, Quinta do Morgado da Torre produces fine wines
O
ne mishit on the course of the Le Méridien Penina Golf & Resort, designed by Sir Henry Cotton, and the ball could land between the vines of Quinta do Morgado da Torre. And if the golfer should make the effort to go and search for the ball, he would find one of the oldest and most renowned vineyards in the Algarve. The estate has been in the hands of the Mendes family since 1865 and present owner João Mendes is the first to have switched from traditional citrus and grape production (for the Cooperativa Portimão closed in 1998) to the production of fine quality wines. With the support of oenologists João Melicias and Jorge Páscoa his 164-acre Adega has been successfully producing fine wines since 1999. The innovative winegrower likes to experiment with old and new grape varieties. His vision is the creation of “light, white wines with powerful bouquets” for the national and international market, in order to extend the considerable scope of his hitherto existing wine range. And that is rather impressive. When it came to tasting, the Tapada da Torre Viognier 2011, a full-bodied white wine (14% alcohol) bursting with aromas of quince and apricot and with plenty of volume on the palate, went down particularly well. A clear, clean wine with a light, invigorating acidity and lasting zest. One of Senhor Mendes’ best sellers is the Alvor Rosé 2011, a cuvée from a blend of Touriga-Nacional, Negra-Mole and Syrah grapes. The wine stands out for its dark, intensely glowing shade of pink, strawberry and wild flower aromas, and boasts a strong fruity flavour, a fine pleasant acidity and a long finish. Serving temperature: 9°C. The Alvor Reserva 2009 packs a powerful punch, having been cask aged for 12 months, and thus features the respective roasted notes, vanilla and cloves. This fine wine smoothly nestles in the tongue and palate, and requires decanting. On a general note the Tapada wines should only be served on special occasions - they are too unique to be simply downed on a whim. The Alcalar Premium 2010, made from Touriga-Nacional and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes is also special: Grapes are ‘foot-crushed’ immediately after being picked before being macerated and stored under controlled temperatures. Anyone with a sweet tooth should love the Tapada da Torre 2008 Reserva Vinho Licoroso, which almost reaches Tawny Port quality in taste and alcohol content. Und sollte sich der Golfer die Mühe machen auf Ballsuche zu gehen, würde er eines der ältesten und renommiertesten Weingüter in der Algarve finden. Seit 1865 befindet sich das Gut im Besitz der Familie Mendes. João Mendes, der jetzige Besitzer ist der Erste, der von der traditionellen Zitrus- und Traubenproduktion (für die 1998 geschlossene Cooperativa Portimão) auf die Erzeugung von qualitativ hochwertigen Weinen umgestiegen ist. Mit Erfolg und der Unterstützung der Önologen João Melicias und Jorge Páscoa produziert seine 164 Hektar große Adega seit 1999 Weine mit Gütesiegel. Der innovative Winzer experimentiert gerne mit alten und neuen Rebsorten. Seine Vision ist die Erzeugung leichter, bouquetreicher Weißweine für den nationalen und internationalen Markt, die das beachtliche Spektrum seines bisherigen Weinsortiments erweitern sollen. Und das hat es in sich. Bei der Degustation gefielen besonders der Tapada da Torre Viognier 2011, ein gehaltvoller Weißwein (14% Alkohol) mit den Aromen von Quitte und Aprikose und viel Fülle am Gaumen. Ein klarer, sauberer Wein mit leichter, belebender Säure und nachhaltiger Würze. Einer von Senhor Mendes Bestsellern ist der Alvor Rosé 2011, eine Cuvée aus der Kult-Traube TourigaNacional, Negra-Mole und Syrah. Der Wein besticht durch seinen dunklen, intensiv leuchtenden Rosaton, duftet nach Erdbeeren und Wildblumen, hat einen kräftigen fruchtigen Geschmack, feine angenehme Säure und einen nachhaltigen Abgang. Trinktemperatur: 9°C. Ein gar kräftiger Bursche ist der Alvor Reserva 2009, der 12 Monate in Barrique-Fässern lagerte und über entsprechende Röstnoten, Vanille und Nelken verfügt. Das edle Tröpfchen schmiegt sich samtweich über Zunge und Gaumen und sollte unbedingt dekantiert werden. Generell sollten die Tapada-Weine nur zu besonderen Anlässen verkostet werden – sie sind zu einmalig, um zwischendurch weggekippt zu werden. Etwas Besonderes ist auch der Alcalar Premium 2010 aus den Trauben Touriga-Nacional und Cabernet Sauvignon, direkt nach der Lese in großen Bottichen „mit den Füßen getreten“ und unter kontrollierten Temperaturen mazeriert und gelagert. Süßmäulchen dürfte der Tapada da Torre 2008 Reserva Vinho Licoroso vortrefflich munden, der in Geschmack und Alkoholgehalt fast schon die Qualität eines Tawny Port erreicht. Urs Mayr

er vor 5 Jahren eröffnete Golfplatz von Monte Rei gilt vielen als die Nr. 1 in Portugal und zählt zu den zehn besten Europas. Völlig klar, dass man auch gastronomisch in der Premier League mitspielen will, deshalb suchte das Management 2007 einen Küchenchef, der den hohen Erwartungen und Anforderungen entsprach. In Jaime Perez, einem Eleven des legendären Molekular-Papstes Ferran Adrià, fand man genau die geeignete Kochpersönlichkeit für das ClubRestaurant Vistas. Der Katalane hatte einige Jahre im weltbesten Gourmettempel El Bulli, der „Denkfabrik für kreative Gastronomie“ auf höchstem Niveau gekocht. Der wichtigste Satz seines großen Lehrmeisters und „Küchen-Alchimisten“ Adrià „kreativ sein, heißt nicht kopieren“, hat der gemütliche

Spanier verinnerlicht und bereitet aus überwiegend regionalen Produkten portugiesisch orientierte, aber katalanisch-baskisch geprägte Speisen zu – völlig ohne kulinarisches Doping mit Xanthan und anderen Elementen. Fisch und Meeresfrüchte sind für Jaime Perez immer eine Herausforderung. Seine Lulas mit Riesengarnelen-Jus, schwarzem Arborioreis und Aioli sind optisch und lukullisch ein Leckerbissen, zu dem Sommelier Nuno Pires einen Quinta dos Carvalhais Encruzado 2009 empfiehlt, einen dem Chardonnay ähnlichen Weißwein. Äußerst delikat, zart und ausgefallen ist das karamellisierte Spanferkel mit Honig, Apfelmus und Rucola. Dazu passt ein rosa Espumante 3B Brut Nature 2008 von Filipa Pato. Das Beste zum Schluss: Eine schlichte Glosche aus weißer Schokolade, die sich beim Übergießen mit heißer Erdbeersoße wie eine Blüte öffnet und ein süßes Geheimnis aus Wildbeeren, Biskuitkuchen und Knusperreis preisgibt. Das ist einfach nur schön und steigert sich mit einem Taylor’s Port Tawny 10 Years Old zum Hochgenuss. Urs Mayr

pen for five years now, Monte Rei Golf Course is considered one of Portugal’s finest and ranked among the best in Europe. With such credentials it’s no wonder the club set its sights toward the culinary Premier League too. Thus in 2007 the management was looking for a chef to meet these high expectations and requirements. With Jaime Perez, a pupil of the legendary Ferran Adrià, they found just the right chef personality for the club restaurant Vistas. The Catalonian had cooked at the highest level for some years in the world’s leading gourmet temple El Bulli - the “think tank for creative cuisine”. Preparing Portuguese oriented, but also CatalanBasque style dishes, using mostly local ingredients without any culinary doping with xanthan gum or other elements, the relaxed Spaniard has internalised the most important sentence of his great mentor and “kitchen alchemist” Adrià: “being creative means not copying”. Fish and seafood are always a challenge for Jaime Perez, with his Squid with Giant Prawn Jus, Black Arborio Rice and Aioli a sumptuous visual delight, for which sommelier Nuno Pires recommends a Quinta dos Carvalhais Encruzado 2009, a Chardonnay-like white wine. For its part the, the Caramelized Suckling Pig with Honey, Apple Purée and Rocket Salad is extremely delicate, tender and unusual. For this a pink Espumante 3B Brut Nature 2008 from Filipa Pato is the right choice. The best is saved for last however: A simple cloche of white chocolate, which opens like a flower when doused with hot strawberry sauce, revealing a sweet secret of wild berries, fruit biscuit and crispy rice. Truly a sight to behold, when sipped with a Taylor’s Port Tawny 10 Years Old the pleasure sensation goes into overload. Urs Mayr

ie kleine alte Stadt im Schatten der trutzigen Burgmauern hat sich an diesem letzten Augustwochenende festlich herausgeputzt, um für ein paar Tage die glorreiche Vergangenheit des ausgehenden Mittelalters zu zelebrieren. Bunte Flaggen, Wimpel und Bänder dekorieren die weißen kubischen Häuser. Die schmiedeeisernen Balkone zieren Gobelins mit heraldischen Motiven. Mittelalterliche Weisen erfüllen die Gassen. Menschen in prächtigen Gewändern drängen um Schaubuden und Marktstände. Oben auf der ehemaligen Templerburg flattern Fahnen und Banner im Wind, verbreitet sich ein Duft-Potpourri aus gegrillten Würsten, Schweinelenden, mediterranen Kräutern, Stockfisch, Holzkohle, Staub, in Olivenöl gebackene Teigwaren und getrockneten Kraken. Und während wackere Knappen den Turnierplatz wässern, Lanzen und Schilde ordnen, genießt man den Moment der Ruhe vor dem ersten Waffengang und schaut von den Zinnen hinüber zum Rio Guadiana, der die Grenze zwischen Portugal und Spanien bildet. Auf dem braunen trägen Fluss verschifften einst Phönizier und Römer Erz aus den Minen bei Mértola. Auch die Mauren nutzten Castro Marim als Handelsplatz. 1242 erobert Dom Paio Peres Correira mit seinen Truppen die Burg. Gut 30 Jahre später erteilt Dom Alfonso III. dem Ort die Stadtrechte. he little old town in the shadow of the formidable castle walls has dressed up in all its finery on this final weekend in August in order to celebrate the glorious past of the late Middle Ages for a few days. Colourful flags, pennants and ribbons decorate the whitewashed houses. The wrought iron balconies are decorated with tapestries featuring heraldic motifs. Medieval tunes fill the alleys. People dressed in sumptuous robes congregate around booths and market stalls. Flags and banners fly in the wind high on top of the former Templar castle, while a potpourri of scents from grilled sausages, pork loin, Mediterranean herbs, salted codfish, charcoal, dust, oven baked pasta in olive oil and dried octopus hovers in the air.

Erst um die Jahrtausendwende besann man sich auf die einstige Bedeutung der Burganlage und schuf mit den „Dias Medievais“ einen Event, der das mittelalterliche Leben in seiner ganzen Fülle und Lebensfreude zeigt. Gegen Abend verkünden Posaunen, Trommeln, Flöten das Eintreffen von Harlekinen, Barden, Landsknechten, Mauren und Rittern. Unter gestreiften Baldachinen und offenen Zelten hocken gestandene Männer und Frauen in mittelalterlichen Gewändern und flechten Körbe, spinnen Wolle, backen Brot oder keltern süße rote Trauben. Waffen- und Hufschmiede, Sattler, Töpfer und Spitzenklöppler demonstrieren alte traditionelle Handwerkskunst. Die Veranstalter sind zwar sehr um Authentizität bemüht, es überwiegt aber der fröhliche kommerzielle Volksfest-Charakter und die Lust am Schmausen, Völlen und Zechen. Bezahlt wird mit „Reales“, die jeder Besucher in einer Wechselstube am Burgeingang eintauschen kann. Vor Burgkapelle und Zitadelle wirbeln Derwische, Falkner präsentieren ihre edlen Vögel, Quacksalber lobpreisen Heilmittel und Tinkturen. Phoenicians and Romans once shipped ore from the mines near Mértola along the brown, lazy river. The Moors used Castro Marim as a trading centre as well. In 1242 Dom Paio Peres Correira captured the castle with his troops. Some 30 years later Dom Alfonso III granted the town its charter. Under the reign of King Dinis the Castelo de Castro Marim was transformed into one of the strategically most important strongholds against the Moors, whose dominion extended on the other side of the River Guadiana. Until 1356 the fortress served as headquarters for the Knights of the Order of Christ, the successors of the Templar Knights. Despite being fortified in the 15th and 16th century to withstand cannon fire, the castle’s era of actual strategic importance was over. Town, castle and region sank into oblivion. Only at around the turn of the millennium was the former importance of the castle remembered and with the creation of “Medieval Days”, an event that reveals medieval life in all its glory and colour. As night falls trumpets, drums and flutes announce the arrival of harlequins, bards, men-at-arms, Moors and knights. Men and women sit in medieval costumes underneath striped canopies and open tents, weaving baskets, spinning wool, baking bread, or pressing sweet red grapes. Gunsmiths and blacksmiths, saddlers, potters and lace makers demonstrate the wonders of old traditional craftsmanship. The organisers are truly concerned about authenticity, however the cheerful commercial festival-character and the joy of banqueting, feasting and drinking prevails. Payment is made with “Reales” which can be exchanged by visitors at a bureau de change at the castle entrance. Dervishes whirl in front of the castle chapel and citadel, falconers present their noble birds and quacksalvers praise their remedies and tinctures. as Concelho Loulé entwickelt sich immer mehr zum Zentrum der schönen Künste. Nachdem die Galeria de São Mamede aus Lissabon, eine der ältesten und traditionsreichsten Galerien in Portugal, bis Oktober die Programm-Gestaltung des bekannten und geschätzten Centro Cultural de São Lourenço der Galeristin Marie Huber in Almancil übernommen hat, setzt Gilian Catto einen neuen Glanzpunkt und zeigt in Kooperation mit der Barbara Stanley Gallery aus London irische Gegenwartskunst. Statt einer „normalen“ Vernissage startete die Ausstellung mit einem 2-tägigen visuellen und akustischen Spektakel, einer Fusion aus Kunst und Design mit Licht- und Videoinstallationen der internationalen Designer-Gruppe Studio 43, Leuchtskulpturen von Beau McClellan, dem von der Innenarchitektin Maria Raposa im Retro-Look gestalteten Statement Room „Less is Elegant“ und natürlich den äußerst professionell präsentierten Gemälden, Pastellen und Wandteppichen in den mit Stuck verzierten Räumen der Galerie Catto. Schwerpunkt der Ausstellung sind zweifelsfrei die irischen Künstler Margaret Egan, Graham Knuttel, Jimmy Lawlor, Anthony Murphy und Victor Richardson, doch die Bilder eines Franzosen zogen alle Besucher nahezu magisch an. Christian Gaillard, Maler und Illustrator aus Avignon, beweist in superrealistischen, ausdrucksstarken Ölgemälden, dass Stier-

Ein ähnlicher Zauber geht von den Acryl-Bildern Jimmy Lawlor’s aus. Der Ire entführt in eine längst vergangene Welt aus Poesie, Märchen und Träumen. Stark beeinflusst vom Pointillismus eines Georges Seurat sind die arkadischen Landschaften von Victor Richardson. Enormes kreatives Potential hat auch der angesagte Dubliner Künstler Graham Knuttel. Seine Pastelle hängen u.a. in den Villen von Robert de Niro und Sylvester Stallone. Expressionistisch-mysthische Züge reflektieren die in dunklen Farben gehaltenen Charaktere von Margaret Egan, einer Absolventin des National Collage of Art & Design. Following the announcement that one of the oldest and most traditional galleries in Portugal, the Galeria de São Mamede in Lisbon, is to be responsible for organising the programme for Almancil’s renowned and cherished Centro Cultural de São Lourenço gallery, owned by Marie Huber until October, Gillian Catto adds a further highlight in presenting contemporary Irish art in collaboration with the Barbara Stanley Gallery in London. Instead of a “normal” opening the exhibition started with a 2-day visual and acoustic spectacle, a fusion of art and design with light and video installations from international designer group Studio 43, light sculptures by Beau McClellan, the Retro-style statement room “Less is Elegant” created by interior designer Maria Raposa and of course paintings, pastels and tapestries professionally exhibited in the stucco decorated rooms of the ArtCatto Gallery. Irish artists Margaret Egan, Graham Knuttel, Jimmy Lawlor, Anthony Murphy and Victor Richardson are undoubtedly the focus of the exhibition, but visitors to the event seemed magically drawn to the paintings of a certain Frenchman. eulich, am Cabo São Vicente, ging es wieder um Thüringer und Nürnberger, denn TVGlobetrotter Roger Willemsen traf sich dort in Begleitung von ALFA-Frontfrau Barbara Fellgiebel mit Wolfgang Bald, dem fränkischen Wurst-Guru und Kreateur der „letzten Bratwurst vor Amerika“. Während der Journalist gut aufgeräumt herzhaft in eine fränkische Rostbratwurst biss, erfuhr er mancherlei Neuigkeiten über das Feinbrät mit Majoran, das im oberpfälzischen Schwandorf nach einer 400 Jahre alten Rezeptur hergestellt wird. Seit der EuroEinführung liegt der Preis pro Bratwurst konstant bei € 3,00, doch bis so eine Thüringer auf dem Gasgrill im KultImbiss landet, haben Transportkosten und diverse Mehrwertsteuersätze den Herstellungspreis jedes einzelnen Würstchens deutlich übertroffen. Bekanntlich ist ja das windumtoste Kap ein heiliger Ort, wo die Götter wohnten, denen schon Kelten und Römer huldig-

Um diesen Heiligkeiten nachts eine himmlische Ruhe zu gewähren, müssen laut Marine- und Gemeindeverordnung sämtliche mobilen Verkaufsstände bis spätestens Einbruch der Dämmerung zerlegt und abtransportiert werden. Besonders beeindruckt zeigt sich Weltendensucher Willemsen von der spektakulären Küste mit ihren zerklüfteten Steilklippen und den im böigen Wind driftenden Möwen. Eigentlich würde das Kap perfekt in seine Sammlung von Enden passen – nicht so kalt wie Patagonien, Kamschatka oder der Himalaya, nicht so heiß wie Borneo oder Birma und weit und breit kein „Seelenverkäufer“ wie die RoRo-Fähre Pricess Ashika in Sicht, die Roger Willemsen am 5. August 2009 in Tongatapu verpasste, und die bei stürmischer See noch am gleichen Tag gegen Mitternacht innerhalb weniger Minuten sank und offiziell 74 Passagiere mit in die Tiefe riss. In diesem Fall bekommt der Begriff „Ende“ allerdings eine sehr tragische Dimension.

own at Cabo São Vicente the other day our thoughts once again turned to German sausages, when TV Globetrotter Roger Willemsen, accompanied by ALFA spokesperson Barbara Fellgiebel, met up with Wolfgang Bald, Franconian sausage guru and creator of the “last sausage before America”. While the journalist heartily bit into his bratwurst, he was introduced to the ins and outs of this fine sausage with marjoram, which is produced in Schwandorf according to a 400-year-old recipe. Since the introduction of the Euro, the price of a sausage has remained constant at €3, but until the moment a Thuringer sausage ends up on the gas grill of the cult snack bar, transportation costs and a variety of value added taxes have far surpassed the production cost of each sausage. As is well known, the windswept Cape is a holy place, home to gods worshipped by the Celts and Romans. In order to grant these sanctities heavenly peace
at night, all food stalls have to be dismantled and removed no later than dusk according to marine law and byelaw. Unsurprisingly Willemsen, known for hunting out different ends of the world, was particularly impressed with the spectacular coastline, with its rugged cliffs and sea gulls drifting in the gusty wind. Actually, the cape would fit in perfectly with his collection of ends - not as cold as Patagonia, Kamchatka or the Himalayas, not as hot as Borneo and Burma, and with no “coffin ships” such as the Ro-Ro ferry “Princess Ashika” in sight. Roger Willemsen narrowly missed boarding this ship on August 5th in 2009 in Tongatapu. Later the same day it sank within a few minutes in stormy seas, taking 74 passengers with it into the depths. In this case the term “end” takes on a very tragic dimension.

indern liest man Märchen vor. Bei mir waren es die Grimm’schen, die von Andersen, auch 1001 Nacht, wo mich der Fliegende Teppich faszinierte. Mit ihm hätte ich überall hin gekonnt. Später hat mich mein Beruf in eine ähnliche Lage versetzt, nur dass die Fortbewegungsmittel irdisch und das Gesehene selten mystisch war. So ähnlich, dachte ich, werde der Effekt von Roger Willemsens Präsentation seiner „Enden der Welt“ sein, denn im Vorfeld hatte ich gelesen, dass er Orte beschrieb, die auch ich kennen gelernt habe. Gemeinsam mit einem hundertköpfigen Publikum trat ich eine Zuhör-Reise quer über den Globus an, deren Elemente nicht im Reiseführer stehen: Persönliche Eindrücke, offene Fragen, unvermutete Zusammenhänge in Raum und Zeit. Ein Rezensent schrieb, Willemsen gehe „an allen Weltwundern nur vorbei“. Ja, vielleicht. Aber auf dem Weg entdeckt er die eigentlichen Wunder der Welt, die in Begegnungen und Beobachtungen liegen und in jedem, der seine persönlichen Enden der Welt zusammenfügt. Das Fliegender-Teppich-Gefühl kehrte zurück. Henrietta Bilawer hildren are read fairytales. Later my job put me in a similar position, just that the means of transport were conventional and what I saw rarely mystical. The effect of Roger Willemsen’s presentation of his “ends of the world” would be similar to that, I thought, because I had read in advance that he would be describing places that I had also been to. Together with the audience of a hundred people I joined an oral journey across the globe, the content of which can be found in no guidebook: personal impressions, open questions, unsuspected connections in space and time. One reviewer wrote, Willemsen “merely walks past world wonders”. Yes, maybe. But on the way he discovers the real wonders of the world, which can be found in encounters and observations, and in everyone who joins him at his personal ends of the world. Am 14. 8. lädt ALFA ein zu einem Literaturbuffet im Convento São José. Buffet? Ja, weil ein Buffet für jeden Geschmack etwas bereit hält. Kunst, Literatur, Musik – kurz KuLiMu – wirken als Kulturform jede für sich schon spannend durch ihre vielfältigen Erscheinungsformen. Wir möchten diese Kunstformen mischen. yurveda – das klingt exotisch, verlockend und entspannend. Dieses asiatische „Wissen vom Leben“ hat auf dem Subkontinent seit 2.000 Jahren Tradition und bildet das Rückgrat des indischen Gesundheitssystems. Mittlerweile boomt diese Lehre auch bei uns. Massagen, Stirngüsse und ayurvedische Ernährung als neue „Cuisine Vitale“ sollen unser aller Leben verändern und uns von Krankheiten heilen. Wer solch eine ayurvedische Kur beabsichtigt, sollte über ein gewisses Maß an Selbstdisziplin verfügen und einen erfahrenen, möglichst in Indien ausgebildeten Therapeuten konsultieren, denn der entscheidet nach Gespräch und Beratung, ob man Vata-, Pitta- oder Kapha-Typ ist. Vata steht für Raum und Luft, Pitta stammt vom Feuer ab und Kapha hat seinen Ursprung in Erde und Wasser. Diese drei Lebensenergien sollten im Einklang sein – sind es aber bei 99 Prozent aller Menschen nicht. „Wir sind, was wir essen, wie wir leben, verdauen und denken“, heißt es im Ayurveda. Anders als in Indien beginnt eine Kur nicht mit Erbrechen und
Darmspülung, sondern mit Massagen, Ölbädern und ausgewogener, überwiegend vegetarischer Ernährung, bei der jede Mahlzeit sechs Geschmacksrichtungen enthält. Süß regt die Bauchspeicheldrüse an und beruhigt; sauer ist anregend, stimuliert Speichelfluss und Produktion von Magensekreten; salzig ist appetitanregend und stabilisierend; scharf erzeugt Wärme, reinigt, aktiviert und regt den Stoffwechsel an; bitter belebt, reinigt, stimuliert Leber und Galle und herb trocknet und wirkt beruhigend auf die Schleimhaut. Als Getränke werden warmes, abgekochtes Wasser und Ingwertee empfohlen. Alkohol ist bei der Heilbehandlung verboten. Fast alle Probanden empfinden Abhyanga, die vierhändige Synchron-Ganzkörpermassage mit warmem Sesamöl als den KurHöhepunkt. Der Zauberspruch „Sesam öffne dich“ trifft zu, denn Abhyanga öffnet im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes die Poren, entschlackt, beruhigt das Nervensystem, regt den Lymphfluss an, bewirkt eine glatte geschmeidige Haut und gibt spürbar neue Kraft und Lebensfreude. This South Asian “knowledge of life” has a tradition dating back 2,000 years on the subcontinent and is the backbone of the Indian health system. And now these teachings are enjoying a boom closer to home. Massage, pouring sesame oil over the forehead and an ayurvedic diet as a new “Cuisine Vitale” are meant to change our lives and heal us from disease. Anyone planning such an ayurvedic regime should possess a certain degree of self-discipline and consult an experienced therapist, ideally trained in India, who, after discussion and consultation, will decide, whether you are a Vata, Pitta or Kapha type. Vata stands for space and air, Pitta is descended from fire and Kapha originates from earth and water. These three life energies should be in tune - but in 99 percent of cases they are not. According to Ayurveda “we are what we eat, how we live, digest and think”. Unlike in India a regime does not begin with vomiting and colonic irrigation, but with massages, oil baths and a bal-

Sweet stimulates the pancreas and calms you down; sour is stimulating, stimulates saliva flow and the production of gastric secretions; salty increases appetite and stabilizes; pungent produces heat, cleans, activates and stimulates the metabolism; bitter invigorates, cleans, stimulates liver and gall bladder and tart dries and has a calming effect on the mucous membrane. Warm boiled water and ginger tea are recommended for drinks. Alcohol is forbidden during the treatment. Almost everyone finds Abhyanga, the four-hand synchronized full body massage with warm sesame oil to be the highlight of the regime. Kunst und Dialog
Einer der auffälligsten Spieler beim Algarve Rugby Sevens Cup war der wieselflinke Terry Bouhraoua, der für den französoschen Profi-Club A.S. Béziers spielt. Er erzielte die meisten Versuche (trys) für sein Team und erinnerte Experten an den genialen Waisale Serevi, mit dem Fidschi zweimal Weltmeister wurde. Autogramme des Franzosen waren besonders bei weiblichen Fans sehr gefragt. One of the most prominent players in the Algarve Rugby Sevens Cup was nimble Terry Bouhraoua, who plays for French professional club A.S. Béziers. He scored most of the tries for his team, and reminded experts of the ingenious Waisale Serevi, with whom Fiji became world champions twice. Autographs from the French player were particularly in demand among female fans.

Ein freundliche Verbindung unterhält sie zu dem Maler und Bildhauer Jeff Lowe aus Lancashire (o. re.), bekannt für seine kubischen Metall-Abformungen und expressionistischen Gemälde. Die beiden trafen sich in der Galerie ArtCatto in Loulé, in der momentan eine limitierte Serie von Holzschnitten des britischen Künstlers zu sehen sind und nutzten die Gelegenheit sich intensiv über Kunst und Design auszutauschen. Frau mit Vogel Wer samstags den Wochenmarkt in Olhão besucht, wird dort auf die “Frau mit dem Vogel” stoßen. Bela ist ein Ara ararauna, ein Gelbbrustara, der gerne Erdnüsse nascht, seinen Schnabel gelegentlich in ein Rieslingglas taucht und sich auf der Schulter seiner Besitzerin Maria so richtig wohl fühlt. Zusammen dürften die beiden das am häufigsten fotografierte Paar der Stadt sein. Und wenn am Abend die Lichter angehen, trägt Maria Bela nach Hause, kleidet sich um und genießt dann solo Jazz & Fado im Café Cantaloupe.
Große Stimme The Voice Mit 5 Jahren benutzte Ilze van Zanten ihre Haarbürste als Mikrofonersatz. Die hat sie mittlerweile gegen ein leistungsstarkes dynamisches Gesangsmikrofon ausgetauscht. Seit 1999 hört man die blonde Holländerin in den angesagten Clubs der Algarve. Sie singt auf Festivals oder tritt zusammen mit der Pedro Frias Band auf. Bird Woman Those visiting the weekly Saturday market in Olhão, will come across the “woman with the bird.” Bela is an Ara ararauna, a blue-and-yellow macaw, who likes to nibble peanuts, occasionally dips its beak into a glass of Riesling and seems to feel right at home on the shoulder of its owner Maria. Together the two are probably the most photographed couple of the city. And when the city lights up in the evening, Maria carries Bela home, changes her clothes and then enjoys jazz & fado on her own in the Café Cantaloupe.

Die Welt ist eine Bühne Im August wird die Algarve zum Festspielhaus mit buntem Repertoire. Was den Urlaubern Vergnügen bereitet, ist für viele Gemeinden ein Spiel um die wirtschaftliche Zukunft

einahe wäre es schief gegangen. Die Feira Medieval de Silves, seit neun Jahren der Sommer-Magnet der alten AlgarveHauptstadt, wäre fast an den Kosten gescheitert. Drei Wochen vor Beginn des Jahrmarkts, der die gefälligen Seiten maurisch-mittelalterlichen Lebens in die Gegenwart beamen will, gewann die Stadt dann das Theater Viv’Arte als Ausrichter des Sommerfestes. Die Truppe aus der Nähe von Aveiro gestaltet seit 25 Jahren Historienspiele im ganzen iberischen Raum. Sie macht das gut und professionell und so müssen die Besucher nun zum ersten Mal Eintritt zahlen. Ob das den Erfolg in diesem touristenarmen Krisenjahr schmälert, wird am 5. August klar, wenn die Feira endet. Ohne das Festival aber hätte Silves einen nennenswerten Teil der Jahreseinnahmen verloren, so Bürgermeisterin Isabel Soares. Fortsetzung Seite 46

Festival da Sardinha
Im Haupt-Ferienmonat der in- und ausländischen Gäste gibt es Festivals im ganzen Land. Die Algarve setzt auf die Symbiose von Handel und Gastronomie: Die bäuerliche Feira da Terra in Aljezur, in Portimão das Festival da Sardinha und das Appetithäppchen-Fest Rota do Petisco, die Fatacil in Lagoa als größte Messe südlich des Tejo, das Festival da Ria Formosa in Faro, das Marisco-Event in Olhão und die Dias Medievais von Castro Marim, dazwischen kleine lokale Feste – wie Perlen einer Kette reihen sich die Festivals. In den Rathäusern feilen Teams ganzjährig an den Festas, Feiras und Festivals, ein Sache von knallharter Kalkulation und generalstabsmäßiger Planung. In Portimão schufen Design-Studenten ein neues Logo und der Veranstaltungsort wird vom Arade-Ufer in den Messepark verlegt. Da ist mehr Platz für die „Rekordzahl an Händlern und Gastronomen“, die mitmachen wollen. Standmieten und Steuern fließen in die Stadtkasse. Sardinen sind vor allem der Köder an der Angel, mit der dickere Fische gefangen werden sollen, denn in Portimão und auf anderen Futtermeilen sowie in der Gastronomie-Ecke der Fatacil gilt die Erkenntnis aller Märkte rund um das Mittelmeer: Gaumenverwöhnte Urlauber sind die spendabelsten Kunden. 23.000 werden allein in Portimão erwartet. Ähnlich in Olhão beim Festival do Marisco: Acht Monate dauerte die Vorbereitung auf fünf Nächte Essen. An der Ria Formosa werden Muscheln, Austern, Garnelen, Langusten und Krebse fangfrisch zubereitet, ebenso in Faro – Reminiszenzen an eine lange Fischerei-Geschichte.
Festival do Marisco
200 Fischfabriken machten noch vor gut 50 Jahren den industriellen Reichtum der Algarve aus, Sardinen gehören seit dem Altertum zum mediterranen Speiseplan. „Die Fische machen die Nahrung des gemeinen Mannes und die Leckerbissen der Vornehmen aus“, notierte der deutsche Naturwissenschaftler Heinrich Friedrich Link 1801 auf seiner Reise durch Portugal. Heute sind acht von zehn Sardinen in portugiesischen Gewässern Jungtiere: Die müssen die Arterhaltung sichern und dürfen nicht exzessiv gefangen werden. Das Instituto Nacional dos Recursos Biológicos (INRB) reduzierte Anfang des Jahres die Fangquote für Sardinen um fast zwei Drittel. Dies, der internationale Wettbewerb und EU-Direktiven lässt die verbliebenen Fischer um ihre Existenz bangen. Vitor Neto, bis vor einer Dekade Staatssekretär für Tourismus und heute Vorsitzender des Algarve-Unternehmerbundes NERA, wollte die Sardine als Kulturgut gesetzlich schützen lassen. Der Spitzenkoch Hélio Loureiro, Mannschaftskoch der portugiesischen Fußball-Nationalelf, serviert das dezimierte Fischlein als Delikatesse im Blätterteigmantel mit gebratenen Äpfeln. Auf den Algarve-Festivals bleibt es rustikal und ein ganzheitliches Modell wirkt: Zum Nachtisch werden regionale Süßspeisen angeboten und nebenbei Keramik, Leder, Strohfiguren, traditionell gewebte Stoffe verkauft: Zum Reisemitbringsel mutiert, wird Althergebrachtes vor dem Vergessen bewahrt und die Herstellung bleibt einigermaßen rentabel. t nearly all went wrong. The Feira Medieval de Silves, which has been a summer magnet for the Algarve’s former capital for nine years now, nearly went belly-up due to lack of funds. Yet, three weeks before the start of the annual fair, which aims to bring the pleasant side of Moorish medieval life to the present, the city managed to entice the Theatre Viv’Arte to organise the summer party. The group based near Aveiro has performed historical plays and re-enactments across the entire Iberian Peninsula for 25 years. As professionals, they are good at what they do, and so the visitors now have to pay an entrance fee for the first time ever. Whether this will diminish the fair’s success in this tourist-poor crisis year will only be known when the Feira ends on August 5th. But without the festival Silves would have lost a significant chunk of its annual revenue, according to Mayor Isabel Soares. There are festivals all over the country during August, the main holiday month for national and foreign guests. The Algarve relies on a symbiosis of trade and gastronomy: the rural Feira da Terra in Aljezur; the Festival da Sardinha and the ‘appetiser’ festival Rota do Petisco in Portimão; Fatacil, the largest trade fair south of the Tagus, in Lagoa; the Festival da Ria Formosa in Faro; the Festival do Marisco in Olhão; and the Dias Medievais in Castro Marim. Not forgetting small local festivities in between. These festivals line up like pearls on a string. Throughout the year teams in town halls fine-tune Festas, Feiras and Festivais, in a case of hard-core calculation and planning with military precision. Design students have created a new logo in Portimão and the venue has been moved from the Arade shores to the Trade Fair Park, where there is more space for the “record number of retailers and restaurateurs,” who would like to take part. Rental fees for stands and taxes will flow into the city’s coffers. Sardines prove an excellent bait with which to land bigger fish, with such experiences enjoyed in every market around the Mediterranean just as true in Portimão and other food fests, including Fatacil: well fed tourists are the most generous customers.
Portimão alone expects 23,000 of these. Olhão presents a similar picture with the Festival do Marisco: five nights of food take eight months to prepare. Freshly caught in the Ria Formosa, clams, oysters, prawns, crayfish and crabs are all prepared for eager festival-goers. The same is true in Faro, harking back to a long fishing history. A little over fifty years ago the Algarve’s industrial wealth still depended on 200 fish factories, while sardines have been part of the Mediterranean diet since ancient times. “Fish constitutes the diet of the common man and the delicacy of the rich,” wrote German scientist Heinrich Friedrich Link on his journey through Portugal in 1801. Today, eight out of ten sardines in Portuguese waters are young fish: these need to ensure the preservation of the species and must not be caught excessively. At the beginning of the year the Instituto Nacional dos Recursos Biológicos (INRB) reduced the fishing quota for sardines by nearly two thirds. This, along with international competition and EU directives leaves the remaining fishermen fearing for their existence. Vitor Neto, Secretary of State for Tourism until a decade ago, and now chairman of the Algarve business association NERA, wanted to have the sardine protected as a cultural asset. Top chef Hélio Loureiro, who cooks for the Portuguese national football team, serves the decimated little fish as a delicacy in puff pastry with roasted apples. The Algarve Festivals remain rustic and their model works: regional sweet dishes are offered for dessert and ceramics, leather, straw figures and traditionally woven fabrics are sold on the side. Bedürftige EU-Bürger können Prozesskostenhilfe erhalten, die auch das Honorar für einen Rechtsanwalt umfassen kann. Im Unterschied zu Deutschland und England besteht in Portugal keine freie Anwaltswahl, vielmehr wird ein Rechtsanwalt durch die portugiesische Rechtsanwaltskammer bestimmt. Für die Rechtsanwaltskosten hat nur Deutschland eine Tabelle – Anlage zum Rechtsanwalts-Vergütungsgesetz -, die bei gerichtlichen Verfahren nicht unterschritten werden darf. Im übrigen gilt inzwischen auch hier wie in Portugal und England: Die Vergütung kann entweder frei verhandelt oder vom Rechtsanwalt unter Berücksichtigung bestimmter Kriterien bestimmt werden; das sind z.B. Schwierigkeit der Sach- und Rechtslage, Zeitaufwand, Bedeutung, wirtschaftliche Verhältnisse. In der Praxis der drei Länder wird häufig ein Zeithonorar vereinbart, seltener ein Pauschalhonorar. Alle Varianten haben Vor- und Nachteile. Jedenfalls gilt: ein Gespräch über die Vergütung der Tätigkeit des Anwalts und eine schriftliche Fixierung der getroffenen Vereinbarung ist sehr zu empfehlen, um späteren Ärgernissen vorzubeugen. Wenn auch guter Rat nicht „billig“ sein kann, so hat man doch Einfluss darauf, wie „teuer“ er wird.Vorschüsse sind in allen drei Rechtsordnungen üblich. Die Erstattbarkeit von Anwaltsgebühren durch den unterlegenen Prozessgegner ist in England und Portugal flexibel geregelt, d.h. das Gericht kann nach Ermessen entscheiden. Only Germany has a table for lawyer fees – in an appendix to the lawyers’ compensation act – which serves for an inflexible norm in court proceedings. Otherwise, the following is true in all three nations: the fee can be either negotiated freely or determined by the lawyer, taking into consideration certain criteria, which include the difficulty of the factual and legal situation, time expenditure, importance, or economic circumstances. In practice a time-based fee is often agreed on in the three countries, and rarely a flat fee. All variations possess advantages and disadvantages. In any case, the following applies: a conversation regarding the remuneration of the lawyer as well as a written record of the agreement is highly recommended in order to prevent future trouble. Although good advice cannot be “cheap”, one does have an influence on how “expensive” it is. Payment advances are common in all three jurisdictions. The refund of lawyer fees through the loser in a case is regulated flexibly in England and Portugal, i.e. the court may decide at its discretion. Starthilfe Die Algarve ist „viel mehr als Strand und Touristen“, bekräftigt Paulo Bernardo vom Verband junger Unternehmer (ANJE) bei der Unterzeichnung eines Kooperationsabkommens zwischen dem im Juni eingeweihten Gewerbegebiet Tavira und dem New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). Die Firmen des Parque Empresarial de Tavira und das NJIT haben eine Start up-Initiative ins Leben gerufen, die ab 2013 Arbeitsplattformen für junge Unternehmer wird und auf diese Weise den Wirtschaftsstandort Tavira beleben soll. Den Unterzeichnern geht es vor allem um die Unterstützung von Betrieben mit einem nachhaltigen Wirtschaftskonzept, die saisonunabhängig funktionieren. Ab kommendem Jahr wird es ein Gebäude für solche Firmen geben, die dadurch sparen können, dass einige Bereiche der Infrastruktur wie Rezeption und Telekommunikationssystem gemeinschaftlich genutzt werden, statt ein eigenes für jede Firma zu schaffen. Start-up aid The Algarve is “much more than beach and tourists”, Paulo Bernardo affirmed at the Association of Young Entrepreneurs (ANJE) when signing a cooperation agreement between the Tavira Business Park, inaugurated in June and the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). The businesses in the Parque Empresarial de Tavira and the NJIT have launched a start-up initiative, which will become a working platform for young entrepreneurs from 2013 onwards, aiming to boost Tavira as a business location.
