Across the nation, September brings with it a sense of tradition, a moment to relish secular culture with festas and romarias celebrating anything from patron saints (such as Lagoa’s “Festival in Honour of Our Lady of Light” on September 08) to the end of harvesting and the arrival of the vindimas, the grape harvest. In this issue we surrender body and soul to the joys of the produce of these juice-filled berries, recognising the quality of Portuguese wines, including those of the Algarve, and delving further into the many properties of this ancient drink. Portugal is only just settling into its position as a major player in the world of wine, repeatedly reaping medals at international wine contests and this year Luís Sottomayor, chief Douro winemaker for Sogrape, was considered Winemaker of the Year at the International Wine Challenge. A high for the industry, to which we raise our glasses, in the hope the Algarve’s burgeoning and already successful wine sector continues to prove its worth. Happy reading and cheers!

der September steht allerorts im Zeichen der traditionellen Feste. Auf zahlreichen festas und romarias wird weltliches wie kirchliches gefeiert: vom Schutzheiligen - wie beim “Festival zu Ehren unserer lieben Frau vom Licht” am 8. September in Lagoa - bis zum Erntedank und dem Beginn der Weinlese, der vindimas. Letzteres wollen auch wir feiern und geben uns daher in dieser Ausgabe den Freuden dieser saftigen Traube hin. Wir widmen uns den Weinen Portugals und derer der Algarve und erforschen die vielfältigen Vorzüge dieses historischen Getränks. Portugal hat gerade erst begonnen, sich als einer der Hauptakteure in der Weinwelt zu etablieren, wiederholt werden portugiesische Weine bei internationalen Wettbewerben mit Medaillen ausgezeichnet, und Luís Sottomayor, Douro-Hauptwinzer für Sogrape, wurde beim International Wine Challenge 2012 zum Winzer des Jahres gekürt. Eine Hochzeit für die Industrie, auf die wir unser Glas erheben - in der Hoffnung, dass der wachsende Weinsektor an der Algarve auch weiterhin so erfolgreich bleibt. Viel Spaß beim Lesen und Prost!

Golf der Meisterklasse Die Portugal Golf Masters 2012 stellen einen Höhepunkt auf der European Tour dar und gelten als Portugals wichtigstes Golfereignis. Golfing Master Class A highlight on the European Tour and considered Portugal’s major golfing event, the Portugal Golf Masters 2012, will be hosted for the 6th consecutive year at Vilamoura’s Oceânico Victoria from October 11-14. The heat will be on at the SBK Superbike in the AutĂłdromo Internacional Algarve racetrack in PortimĂŁo between September 21st and 23rd. Unlike MotoGP, where purpose built motorbikes are used, Superbikes are tuned versions of motorcycles in the 1000 cc class, available for sale to the public. usus soll, glaubt man der Mythologie, ein Sohn oder Gefährte des Weingottes Bacchus gewesen sein. Möglicherweise erhielt die römische Provinz Lusitanien (das heutige Portugal) nach dieser Sagengestalt ihren Namen. Fakt ist jedoch, dass die Phönizier um 1.000 v. Chr. bei Faro und Cádiz/Andalusien die ersten Rebstöcke pflanzten. Nach Auffassung des deutschen Archäologen Dr. Felix Teichner dürfte die 2.000 Jahre alte Villa rustica bei Estoi einst ein Zentrum für Weinanbau und –handel gewesen sein, denn bei Grabungsarbeiten stieß man dort auf Reste einer Kelterei und zahlreiche Amphorenscherben. Ob in der pompösen Villa ausschweifende Bacchanale wie auf dem Gemälde von Sir Lawrence AlmaTadema (Foto links) gefeiert wurden, lässt sich nur vermuten. Während der maurischen Besetzung kam die Weinproduktion fast völlig zum Erliegen. Das änderte sich nach der Reconquista, als im 12. Jahrhundert Zisterzienser in Portugal über 100 Klöster gründeten. Die Mönche und später Dom Dinis, der rei lavrador (König der Bauern) förderten Landwirtschaft und Weinanbau. Durch den 100-jährigen Krieg mit Frankreich versiegte für England die Bezugsquelle für Wein. Man brauchte Ersatz und entdeckte die Vorzüge portugiesischer Weine. Durch den Vertrag von Windsor (1386) entwickelte sich ein florierender Weinhandel mit Großbritannien. Die durch diesen Vertrag geregelte Allianz ist bis heute gültig. Als die Briten ihr Faible für Portwein entwickelten, erließ Portugal 1756 das weltweit erste Gesetz zur Begrenzung eines Anbaugebietes. In diesem Fall galt die Denominação de Origem Controlada (DOC) nur für die Region am Douro. Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts erlebte der Weinanbau seinen Super-GAU – Mehltau und Rebläuse dezimierten große Teile der Anbaugebiete. Doch mit resistenten Rebstöcken aus der Region Tavira und amerikanischen Wildreben als sogenannte Unterlagsreben, auf die man später Edelreben aufpfropfte, konnte der Weinbau gerettet werden. Aus der Wiederentdeckung des Korkverschlusses durch den Mönch Dom Pérignon (1638 – 1715) entstand eine immense Nachfrage nach Naturkorken, was in der Algarve und im Alentejo dazu führte, dass viele Weinberge zur Aufforstung von Eichenwäldern gerodet wurden. Die Weinproduktion bis Ende der 80er Jahre beschränkte sich überwiegend auf Landweine. Nachdem EU-Beitritt Portugals 1985 flossen auf einmal hohe EU-Fördermittel in die Region, die viele kleinere Familienbetriebe nutzten, um Weinanbau und Produktion zu modernisieren.

ccording to mythology Lusus was allegedly the son or companion of Bacchus, the god of wine. The Roman province of Lusitania (now Portugal) is purported to have been named after this legendary figure. An irrevocable fact, however, is that the Phoenicians planted the first vines in around 1000 BC near Faro and Cádiz/Andalusia. According to German archaeologist Dr. Felix Teichner the 2000-yearold Villa Rústica near Estoi may well have once been a centre for winegrowing and wine trade as excavation works have revealed the remains of a winery as well as numerous amphorae. Whether riotous Bacchanals were celebrated in the sumptuous villa, as in the painting by Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema (photo previous pages), we can only guess. During the Moorish occupation wine production almost came to a complete standstill. But this changed after the Reconquista, when in the 12th Century Cistercians founded more than 100 monasteries in Portugal. The monks and later Dom Dinis, known as the Farmer King, promoted agriculture and viticulture. The 100-year war with France meant that England’s source of wine was drying up. The English needed a replacement and discovered the advantages of Portuguese wines. With the Treaty of Windsor (1386) a flourishing wine trade with Britain was born. The alliance regulated by this contract is still valid today. When the British developed their taste for port wine, in 1756 Portugal enacted the world’s first law for the limitation of a winegrowing area. The demarcated area in question was the region along the Douro, now the oldest in the world. In the middle of the 19th century wine growing experienced its worstcase scenario: mildew and grape phylloxera decimated huge swathes of wine producing areas. However, thanks to resistant vines from the Tavira region and American wild vines, which were used as rootstock onto which premium grapes varieties could be grafted, wine growing could be saved. The rediscovery of cork stoppers by the monk Dom Pérignon (1638 - 1715) created a huge demand for natural cork, which lead to the clearing of many vineyards in the Algarve and Alentejo in order to plant oak forests. Until the end of the 1980s wine production was limited to mainly ordinary table wines. After Portugal joined the EU in 1985 generous EU subsidies suddenly flowed into the region, which many small family businesses used to modernize wine growing and production. Marius Müller

o der Wein fehlt, da stirbt der Reiz der Venus“, heißt es bei Euripides. Seit Jahrtausenden sagt man dem Wein eine aphrodisierende Wirkung nach. Der Alkohol macht locker, die vielfältig vorhandenen Aromen wecken Emotionen und setzen Pheromone frei. „Die Dosis macht das Gift“, sagte Paracelsus und empfahl einen ¼ Liter Wein für Frauen und einen ½ Liter für Männer, um – zum richtigen Zeitpunkt dosiert – eine erotische Stimmung hervorzurufen. Giacomo Casanova, Casanova Großmeister in Sachen Liebe und Verführung, pflegte bei seinen amourösen Eskapaden das Liebeslager mit Rosenblättern zu bestreuen und sich und seine Auserwählten mit edlem, bouquetreichen Rotwein zu verwöhnen. Gerne reichte er dazu Roquefort oder einen Chambertin, um „keimende Liebe zur Vollendung zu bringen“. Egal, ob es am leicht animalischen Odor des Käses lag, ob am Wein oder dem Rosenduft, funktioniert hat es, wie man weiß. Wein und Eros wird seit jeher in Gemälden, Zeichnungen, Foto-
grafien und Filmen dargestellt. Begeistert von Tizians „Bacchanal“, schrieb José Ortega y Gasset, der bekannte spanische Philosoph und Essayist: „Die Zechenden haben ihre Kleider abgetan, um auf warmer Haut die Liebkosung der Elemente zu verspüren…“ Zu romantischen Situationen bietet sich natürlich immer der „erotische Prickler“ an, Champagner, erfunden ausgerechnet von einem Mönch und gerne kombiniert mit Austern oder aromatischen Erdbeeren. Stets in Film-Produktionen wiederkehrend, sind Szenen eines "Têteà-tête" bei Wein und Kerzenschein oder das Naschen von Trauben aus dem Bauchnabel der Verführten. Ein Gefühl, dass kaum eine Frau vergessen wird. In der Belle Epoque schlürfte Mann nonchalant den Champagner aus dem Schuh der Geliebten. William Shakespeare, ein großer Freund des Weines und profunder Kenner der Zusammenhänge von Alkoholkonsum und Liebe, beschreibt u.a. in Macbeth, das wenig Wein erotisiert, größere Mengen hingegen stumpf und müde machen. Hugh Johnson, der britische Weinkritiker, pointiert gerne mit dem Satz: „Weintrinker sehen gut aus, sind intelligent, sexy und gesund!“ Marius Müller

f you take wine away, love will die, and every other source of human joy will follow,” Euripides said. Wine has been credited with possessing aphrodisiac properties for thousands of years. Its alcoholic content relaxes, while its varied aromas arouse emotions and release pheromones. “The dose makes the poison,” Paracelsus said, and recommended a quarter of a litre of wine for women and half a litre for men to bring about, when dosed at the right time, an erotic mood. Giacomo Casanova, grand master in matters of love and seduction, used to sprinkle the bed of love with rose petals and to treat himself and his chosen ones to fine, bouquet rich red wine during his amorous escapades. With this he liked to offer Roquefort or a Chambertin wine, in order to “bring budding love to completion”. Whether down to the slightly animalistic odour of the cheese, the wine or the scent of roses, legend tells us that it certainly worked. Wine and Eros have always been depicted in paintings, drawings, photographs and films. Thrilled by Titian’s “Bacchanal,” José Ortega y Gasset, the famous Spanish philosopher and essayist, wrote: “The tipplers have taken off their clothes in order to feel the caress of the elements on warm skin… Champagne, “the erotic sparkler”, invented by a monk of all people, is of course always the right choice for romantic situations and often combined with oysters or aromatic strawberries. Film productions repeatedly present tête-àtête situations where wine and candlelight play their part, or erotically nibbling grapes from a lover’s hand. A feeling that hardly any woman will forget. During the Belle Époque men would nonchalantly sip champagne out of their beloved’s shoe. In Macbeth among other works, William Shakespeare, a great friend of wine and profound connoisseur of the connections between alcoholic consumption and love, describes how a little wine eroticizes, however larger quantities make you dull and tired. And British wine critic Hugh Johnson loves to point out that “wine drinkers are good-looking, intelligent, sexy and healthy!” Marius Müller

leopatra badete nicht nur gerne in Eselsmilch – wie auch Joséphine Bonaparte und Kaiserin Sisi –, sondern auch in Rotwein, dessen Tannine, Polyphenole und Fruchtsäuren die Haut der ägyptischen Pharaonin noch elastischer und geschmeidiger machten. Auch Hippokrates, der berühmteste Mediziner des Altertums, setzte Wein gezielt für Anwendungen und Behandlungen ein. Hildegard von Bingen schwor auf „gelöschten Wein“. Sie erhitzte ihren Lieblingswein bis kurz vor dem Siedepunkt, fügte einen Schuss kaltes Wasser hinzu und trank dieses stimulierende Elixier in kleinen Schlucken. Wissenschaftlich ist belegt, dass die im Wein enthaltenen Flavonoide entzündungshemmend, venenstärkend und entstauend wirken. Kaltgepresstes Traubenkernöl enthält die pflegenden Inhaltstoffe Vitamin E und Linolsäure – zu empfehlen bei trockener und gestresster Haut. Kleiner Tipp: Halbieren Sie große Tafeltrauben und legen Sie diese mindestens 30 Minuten ins Gefrierfach. Fahren Sie anschließend mit den Traubenhälften behutsam übers

Immer mehr Wellness-Hotels, Spas und Beautyfarmen bieten Rotweinbäder, Massagen mit Traubenkernöl, Tresterpackungen, kosmetische Behandlungen und spezielle Wein-Menüs an, die den Körper wieder in Form bringen sollen. Sehr zu empfehlen ist dabei das Weinbad. Es beginnt in der Regel mit einem Körper-Peeling aus Weintrester, dem folgt ein Bad in heißem Wasser, dem ausreichend Wein zugefügt wird. Danach erfolgt die Massage mit Traubenkernöl. Testen Sie es ruhig einmal zu Hause aus, indem Sie eine angebrochene Flasche Wein aus dem Kühlschrank in Ihr Badewasser gießen. Das muss nicht gleich ein Château Mouton-Rothchild Puillac Premier Cru sein – ein guter Vinho do Algarve tut es auch. Für das Peeling zu Hause bietet Caudalíe, laut eigener Aussage die Erfinder der Vinotherapie, ihren „Commage Crushed Cabernet“ an. Die gemahlenen Traubenkerne sind mit braunem Zucker, Akazienhonig aus der Gironde und ätherischen Ölen aus

Bereits in der Antike galt Rotwein als Heilmittel. Heute werden Weinbäder und Extrakte aus Traubenkernöl gezielt als Anti-Aging-Mittel eingesetzt.

Verbindung reift dann der Terras do Calalão Branco heran, ein kräftiger Weißwein, vortrefflich ausbalanciert zwischen Süße und Säure. Er hat eine klare, goldgelbe Farbe. Sein Geschmack ist herbfruchtig mit einem nachhaltigen Abgang. Der bernsteinfarbene Muska ist ein mit portugiesischem Brandy aufgespriteter Süßwein, der geschmacklich an einen Tokajer erinnert. Seine Aromen sind äußerst vielfältig: Honig, Rosenblüten, Karamell, Orangenschale, Aprikose und Trockenfrüchte. Der Alkoholgehalt beträgt 19 Prozent. Bestseller im Sortiment des Weinguts ist natürlich ein Roter, der Quinta dos Lopes Tinto 2008, gekeltert aus Castelão-Trauben und sechs Monate in Fässern aus amerikanischer Eiche gereift. Der Wein hat ein tiefes, intensiv leuchtendes Rubinrot, kräftige Aromen von roten Wildbeeren und Zwetschgen, leichte Duftnoten von Tabak, Mandel und Walnuss, ist abgerundet im Geschmack und hat einen weichen, samtigen Abgang. Produziert wird überwiegend für den regionalen Markt. Erhältlich sind die Weine direkt auf der Quinta sowie bei Intermarché und Apolónia. Das Gut beliefert auch zahlreiche Hotels und Restaurants der Region. Altersbedingt sucht er jetzt einen Nachfolger, der sein Lebenswerk weiterführt. Urs Mayr

n the 15th century the Mata de Barão woodland behind Lagos provided the wood for the construction of those caravels on which daring Portuguese navigators once sailed to discover new worlds and unknown oceans. Located on a flat elongated hill in close proximity to the timeless village of Barão de São João, lies Quinta dos Lopes, an agricultural company that has been producing organic wine for 25 years.

Jahrhundert lieferte das Waldgebiet Mata de Barão de São João im Hinterland von Lagos das Holz für den Bau jener Karavellen, mit denen wagemutige portugiesische Navigatoren unbekannte Ozeane befuhren und neue Welten entdeckten. Ganz in der Nähe des zeitlosen Dorfes Barão de São João liegt auf einem flachen langgezogenen Hügel die Quinta dos Lopes, ein Agrarbetrieb, der seit 25 Jahren organisch-biologischen Wein anbaut. Mit dem Erwerb des 26 Hektar großen Gutes erfüllte sich José Inês Lopes 1979 einen Lebenstraum – nach seinen Vorstellungen Landwirtschaft zu betreiben. Altersbedingt sucht er jetzt einen Nachfolger, der sein Lebenswerk weiterführt. „Ich war einer der Ersten, der hier die Auflagen für die BioZertifizierung erfüllt hat“, erklärt der Patron stolz und zeigt auf das Etikett mit dem aufgedruckten Logo von Ecocert Portugal, und dann führt er seine Gäste trotz Mittagshitze durch die langen Reihen der Rebstöcke. Senhor Lopes hat sich auf die Traubensorten Castelão, Negra-Mole, Moscatel und Boal Branco spezialisiert. Letztere ist eine autochthone Rebe, die hauptsächlich auf Madeira gedeiht und sich ideal für die Produktion von Süßweinen eignet. Auf der Quinta dos Lopes wird diese Traube mit Moscatel verschnitten. With the acquisition of the 26-acre large manor in 1979, José Inês Lopes fulfilled a lifelong dream - to farm his way. "I was one of the first people to meet the requirements for organic certification," the boss says proudly, showing the label with the printed Ecocert Portugal logo, before leading his guests through the long rows of vines, despite the midday heat. Senhor Lopes has specialised in Castelão, Negra Mole, Moscatel and Boal Branco grape varieties. The latter is a native vine, mainly thriving on Madeira and ideally suited for the production of sweet wines. On the Quinta dos Lopes this grape is blended with Moscatel. From this union comes the Terras do Calalão Branco, a strong white wine with an excellent balance between sweetness and acidity. It has a clear, golden colour; the flavour is tart and fruity with a lasting finish. The amber-coloured Muska is a sweet wine fortified with Portuguese brandy, ist flavour reminiscent of a Tokay wine. Its aromas are very versatile: honey, rose petals, caramel, orange peel, apricot and dried fruits. The alcohol content is 19 per cent. The bestseller in the estate’s selection is of course a red, the Quinta dos Lopes Tinto 2008, made from Castelão grapes and matured in American oak barrels for six months. The wine boasts a deep, intensely glowing ruby red colour, strong aromas of wild berries and damsons, light fragrances of tobacco, almond and walnut, with a rounded flavour and a soft, velvety finish. Production is mainly for the regional market. The wines are available directly from the Quinta as well as at Intermarché and Apolónia. The vineyard also supplies many hotels and restaurants in the region. For age reasons he is now looking for a successor to continue his life's work. Urs Mayr

Wer niemals außer sich geriet, wird niemals gründlich in sich gehen“, schrieb einst der Literatur-Nobelpreisträger Paul Heyse und entsprechend dieser Aussage sammelte Joaquim Coelho erste intensive Auslandserfahrungen an Bord von Kreuzfahrtschiffen, bevor er seine Gastronomie-Ausbildung in der Schweiz abschloss, um sein Ziel zu verwirklichen, in seinem Heimatort Sesmarias ein eigenes Restaurant zu eröffnen. Das ist jetzt 18 Jahre her und seit dem führt er gemeinsam mit seiner Schweizer Ehefrau Monika erfolgreich das „O Marinheiro“. So international und

Die Devise der Gastgeber lautet: „Qualität statt Quantität und Value for money!“ Ein Klassiker auf der Karte sind Amêijoas à Bulhão Pato, Venusmuscheln aus der Ria Formosa, gedünstet in Olivenöl, abgelöscht mit Weißwein und verfeinert mit Koriander, Knoblauch, Zitronensaft, Salz und Pfeffer – simpel, aber lecker. Als Hauptgang bieten sich an Lamm Provençale mit Gemüse und Kartoffel-Gratin, Entenbrust auf Orangensauce mit Tagliatelle oder die „Vermählung von Land und Meer“, mit aguardente velha flambierte Seeteufel-Medaillons in Safran-Sahnesauce mit Gemüse-Julienne und Langkornreis. Joaquim, dessen Ste-ckenpferd regionale Weine und die eigene Garrafeira ist, würde zu diesem Gericht einen João Clara Branco 2011 servieren. Optisch eine Augenweide sind die mit frischen Erdbeeren und Bananen gefüllten Filoteig-Blätter mit weißer Schokoladensauce, eine delikate süße Verführung, ideal in der Kombination mit einem Gläschen Madeira Verdelho und einer Bica (Espresso) Urs Mayr

Those who’ve never been outside their depth, will never truly know their depth.” So wrote Nobel Literature Prize winner Paul Heyse and true to this statement Joaquim Coelho first collected extensive international experience aboard cruise liners before completing his catering training in Switzerland and finally achieving his goal of having his own restaurant in his hometown Seismarias. 18 years have since passed and he continues to run the successful “O Marinheiro” with his Swiss wife Monika. The menu is as international and varied as the guests. Whether Sir Cliff Richard, Austrian actress and singer Dagmar Koller, band members of Def Leppard or Fleetwood Mac, or simply “normal” tourists from Lisbon, Malmo, Munich or Liverpool - they all come to dine in the eatery’s relaxed atmosphere. itesurfing liegt voll im Trend. Weltweit betreiben mehr als eine halbe Million Menschen regelmäßig diesen faszinierenden Wassersport. Tendenz stetig steigend. Ideale Spots für Kiter in der Algarve sind neben Sagres, Meia Praia und die Ria de Alvor vor allem die Inseln des Sotavento, wobei sich Cabanas immer mehr zu einem Mekka für das Surfen mit dem aufblasbaren Lenkdrachen entwickelt. In den Sommermonaten bläst der Wind in der Regel aus West, also parallel zur Küste. Der in Portugal sonst so dominante Nortada (Nordwind) weht hier nicht so häufig, ebenso wie der Levante, der warme Ostwind aus dem westlichen Mittelmeerraum. Für Anfänger und Fortgeschrittene bestens geeignet ist neben den Wasserarmen, Lagunen und Kanälen der Ria Formosa auch der endlos lange Strand der Ilha de Cabanas, wo man an manchen Tagen leicht 20 bis 30 bunte Lenkdrachen zählen kann. Danach verfügen die meisten Kursteilnehmer über das notwendige praktische und theoretische Wissen, um Kitesurfen selbständig auszuüben. Doch erst mit dem Beherrschen des „Höhelaufens“, durch gezieltes Steuern und Gleiten auf einem Kurs – ideal ist der Halbwindkurs, bei dem der Surfer rechtwinklig zur Windrichtung fährt – kann man sich sicher auf dem Wasser bewegen. Sprünge und Tricks lernt man in speziellen AufbauKursen. Top-Kiter und Profis erreichen mit ihren Lenkdrachen hohe Geschwindigkeiten und schaffen Sprünge von mehr als zehn Meter Höhe. ple regularly practise this exciting water sport around the world. And this number is growing and growing. Apart from Sagres, Meia Praia and the Ria de Alvor, the Algarve’s hottest spots for kite surfers are the islands of the Sotavento, with Cabanas more and more developing into a Mecca for surfing with the inflatable stunt kite. During the summer months the wind generally blows from the west, southwest, i.e. parallel to the coast. Portugal’s otherwise dominant Nortada (north wind) doesn’t blow so frequently here, neither does the Levante, the warm east wind from the western Mediterranean. The stretches of water, lagoons and canals of the
Ria Formosa as well as the long beach of the Ilha de Cabanas, where one can easily count 20 to 30 colourful kites on some days, are perfectly suitable for beginners and advanced alike. Many of the kite surfers, who cut through the iridescent greenblue waters of the Atlantic on their twin-tip boards, performing jump, flip and grab tricks, were once students of the Eolis kitesurfing school where they were taught by coach Sandra how to handle kite, flying lines, harness and board. A basic course usually lasts two to three days. After that most students possess the necessary practical and theoretical knowledge to kite surf on their own. But only when you have mastered upwind riding, through controlled steering and gliding on a course ideal is the half wind course in which the surfer surfs at a right angle to the wind direction - can you move on the water safely. Jumps and tricks can be learned in special advanced courses. Top kite surfers and pros reach high speeds with their stunt kites and achieve jumps of more than 10 metres high. ceânicos Old Course ist ein erfahrener Spieler auf dem Algarve Golf-Parkett und repräsentiert die Region bereits seit über 40 Jahren. Seine Eigenschaft, technische Fähigkeiten zu belohnen und sein suchtgefährdendes hohes Spielniveau erklären seine anhaltende Popularität und seinen wohlverdienten Platz unter den besten Golfplätzen Portugals. Sobald man eine Runde beendet hat, möchte man am liebsten gleich wieder von vorne anfangen! Der von Frank Pennick im Parkstil entworfene Platz wurde 1969 als Portugals dritter Golfplatz eröffnet. Die Schönheit des Platzes liegt in seiner Anpassung an die natürliche Landschaft – auf Veränderungen des Geländes wurde weitestgehend verzichtet und so schlängelt sich der Platz buchstäblich durch die mit Pinien besetzte Landschaft. Martin Hawtree veranlasste im Jahre 1996 eine Sanierung des Platzes mit diversen Verbesserungen und neuen Einrichtungen, darunter auch das große, im Kolonialstil erbaute Clubhaus. Gleich zu Beginn fordert der Old Course den Golfer heraus, spornt ihn zu einer guten Leistung an, um dann die wohlverdienten Früchte zu ernten. Mit seinem abschüssigen Fairway, ein von Kiefern flankierter Korridor, der ebenso schmal ist, wie die Fehlerquote, die der Platz erlaubt, bestraft das erste Loch, ein unschuldig anmutender Par 4 (302 Meter), umgehend jegliche Ungenauigkeit beim Tee off. Die Botschaft an den Spieler ist eindeutig: Lerne aus deinen Fehlern und mach’ es schnell. Die nachfolgenden Löcher bieten alle Arten von schwierigen Überraschungen, zunächst mag das für ein klein wenig Verärgerung sorgen, stellt sich aber bei genauerer Betrachtung als clevere Maßnahme heraus, um allzeit die volle Konzentration des Spielers zu gewährleisten. Das landschaftlich reizvolle 4. Loch (Par 3, 149m) besticht durch das einzige Wasserhindernis des Platzes, ein sprudelnder Teich vor dem Hintergrund einer großen Schirmpinie, sowie einen frechen Bunker zwischen diesem und dem Grün. Auch hier gilt es, wie so oft auf diesem Platz, Risiko und Belohnung sorgfältig gegeneinander abzuwägen. Von seiner erhöhten Abschlagsposition bietet das 6.Loch (Par 3, 196m) einen herrlichen Blick auf das Meer, während es den Spieler mit seinem steilen Abhang zum Grün irritiert. Mit einem Stroke-Index 1 fordert der lange Par 4 am 8. Loch (400m) das volle Geschick des Spielers und macht das Erreichen des Pars zu einer schwierigen Qual. Aber all das gehört zum Spaß auf dem Old Course dazu, und auch die letzten neun Löcher sind nicht minder anspruchsvoll, belohnen jedoch denjenigen, der es wagt etwas zu wagen. Scheinbar harmlose Hindernisse erweisen sich als wohl plazierte Stolperfallen für den ahnungslosen Spieler, während Doglegs dem Platz zusätzliche Vielfalt verleihen. Und wenn man sich dann einen wohlverdienten Drink auf der großen Veranda des Clubhauses genehmigt, spielt man im Geiste bereits die möglichen Taktiken beim nächsten Angriff auf den Old Course durch. ceânico’s Old Course, in Vilamoura, is a seasoned player on the Algarve’s golf scene, having represented the region for over forty years. Its ongoing popularity and place amongst the very best in Portugal is well deserved, given its knack for rewarding technical ability, coupled with its addictive level of play. Once you finish a round, you’ll be desperate to get back out there! Designed by Frank Pennick, the parkland-style course opened in 1969, making it the third course to open in Portugal. The beauty of this course lies in its adaptation of the natural lie of the land, with little changes made to the terrain, and the course literally winding its way around the pine-dotted landscape. In 1996 Martin Hawtree carried out renovation work on the course, making various improvements and adding to facilities, including the grand, colonial style clubhouse.
From the outset, the Old Course plays with golfers’ minds, daring them to perform well, and reap the rewards. The 1st hole, an innocent-looking par 4 (302 metres), is quick to punish lack of accuracy off the tee, with its downhill fairway a narrow pine-flanked corridor, as narrow as the margin of error the course allows in general. So, the message is clear: learn from your mistakes and do it quick. The holes that follow contain all manner of testing surprises, initially an irritation, but on afterthought clever additions to ensure players are kept on their toes. The scenic 4th (par 3, 149m) reveals the course’s only water hazard, a bubbling pond, backed by a large umbrella pine, with a cheeky bunker perched between this and the green. Once again, as this course often proves, it’s all a question of weighing up risk against reward. The 6th (par 3, 196m) offers great views down to the ocean from its elevated tee, while confusing the player with its steep downward approach to the green. With stroke index 1 the long par-4 8th (400m) pushes player skill to the full, making achieving par agonisingly difficult. But that’s all part of the fun of the Old Course, with its back-nine equally taxing and yet compensating when you dare to dare. Hazards, seemingly inoffensive, have been well placed to trip up the unsuspecting, while doglegs add to the course’s variety. And as you settle down to a well earned drink on the spacious clubhouse veranda, your mind is already planning your next visit and possible tactics for your next assault of the Old Course. agos war fast 200 Jahre die Metropole der Algarve, eine bedeutende, prächtige Stadt, reich geworden durch den Handel mit Sklaven, die bis 1869 auf der Praça Infante Dom Henrique versteigert wurden. Von hier sind es nur wenige Schritte bis zur Rua 25 de Abril, im Insider-Jargon auch „Fressmeile“ genannt, durch die in den Sommermonaten Tausende von Ausflügler und Touristen flanieren. Die meisten kommen aber nicht nur wegen des üppigen gastronomischen Angebots, sondern vor allem wegen der natürlichen und historischen Sehenswürdigkeiten, welche die Stadt zu bieten hat. Eine logisch kaum nachvollziehbare Affinität entwickeln viele LagosBesucher zu einem der zahlreichen Speed- und Fischerboote, die temporeich Felsklippen umkurven, Grotten durchpflügen und ihr meist blasshäutiges Klientel nach spätestens einer Stunde sonnenverbrannt, salzverkrustet, aber glücklich – weil man im Schnelldurchgang viele wundersame Dinge sah –, wieder am Kai der Ribeira de Bensafrim absetzen. Zeitlose, weisere, sportlich orientierte Zeitgenossen entscheiden sich stattdessen für eine wesentlich spannendere und ökologisch verträgliche Variante, nehmen an einer Kayak-Safari teil und besteigen am „Kartoffel-Strand“, der Praia da Batate einen Ocean-Kayak. Gewiss, man kann auch im Miet-Kayak auf eigene Faust die bizarren Felsformationen und Grotten der Ponta da Piedade erforschen, doch lustiger und informativer ist es im “Sixpack” unter Führung eines erfahrenen Tour-Guides. Sobald man die lange Mole vor der Fortaleza da Ponta da Bandeira umrundet, das Stück offene See durchquert hat, gerät man in den Windschatten der pittoresken Steilküste. Die zerstörerische gewaltige Flutwelle von 1755, ausgelöst durch ein Seebeben desssen Epizentrum 200 km südwestlich von Cabo São de Vicente lag, hat Lagos fast völlig zerstört. Von der einstigen Bastion am Rand der Praia dos Estudantes zeugen nur noch ein paar Mauerreste und ein rekonstruierter Brückenbogen. Doch erst ab dem „Kamel-Strand“ (Praia do Camilo) wird die Küstenlinie so richtig bizarr, zerteilen zyklopische Solitäre aus orangegelben zerfurchtem Gestein, Felsenbögen und schmale Schluchten gelbweiße Miniaturstrände. Man zieht die Paddel durch glucksendes blaugrünes Wasser. Der Schweiß rinnt, das Herz pocht, der Körper setzt Endorphine frei. Da ist die Stille in der Kathedralen-Grotte mit ihrer angenehm kühlenden Luft. Ocker-

Um einen Blick auf den 1912 gebauten Leuchtturm zu werfen, der auf einer 20 Meter hohen Felsklippe thront und für dessen Bau eine Kapelle abgerissen wurde, muss man den südlichen Zipfel der Landzunge umrunden und einige hundert Meter in das tiefe Blau des Atlantiks hinauspaddeln. Das ist sicherlich einfacher, als im Pulk mit fremden Besuchern die 200 Betonstufen zu erklimmen, die zum Parkplatz neben dem Leuchtturm führen.

Blinddate mit Autor

m September feiert die Assoziation der Literaturfreunde Algarve, ALFA, ihren siebten Geburtstag und erwartet zu diesem Anlass einen speziellen Gast. Freuen Sie sich auf ein Blinddate mit einem der 20 Kandidaten der Longlist des Deutschen Buchpreises 2012. Elf Lesungen insgesamt sind geplant. Das einzige Blinddate im Ausland findet in Lagoa statt. 20 von 147 Titeln gehen in die Halbfinalrunde. Am 15. August wurde die Liste mit den Namen der 20 Longlist-Kandidaten und ihrer Romantitel bekannt gegeben. Welcher Autor wo lesen wird, bleibt bis zuletzt geheim. Unser Blinddate ist am Dienstag, 11. September um 19.30 h im Convento Sao José. Am 12. September ist der Startschuss für das Finale: Sechs von zwanzig Autoren bleiben auf der Shortlist für den besten Roman 2012 übrig. Wer von den Sechs gewinnt, erfahren die Autoren zum Auftakt der Frankfurter Buchmesse am 8. Oktober 2012 bei der Preisverleihung im Kaisersaal des Frankfurter Römer. Der Deutsche Buchpreis zählt zu den renommiertesten Literaturauszeichnungen in Deutschland, und wird seit 2005 von der Stiftung Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels verliehen. Ende August eröffnen José Macârio Correia, Präsident der Câmara in Faro, und Dr. Rudolf Hanisch, Kurator aus München die Ausstellung “Nanokubismus” von Rita Adolff-Wollfarth. In ihren Bildern führt die Künstlerin Wissenschaft und Geist zusammen. Sie will die Brücke sichtbar machen, die für sie seit Beginn der Welt vorhanden ist. In ihrer kreativen Vielfalt arbeitet sie an mehreren Zyklen gleichzeitig und entwickelt neben dem NanoKubismus Themen wie portugiesische Landschaftsportraits, Voodoo und romantische Abstrakte. In den letzten Jahren hat sie in Brüssel, München, Lissabon und Shanghai ausgestellt. Rita AdolffWollfarth ist am Oberrhein aufgewachsen, lebt und arbeitet aber inzwischen überwiegend in ihrem Atelier an der Algarve und in München. Nano Cubism At the end of August José Macário Correia, mayor of Faro, and Dr. Rudolf Hanisch, curator from Munich, inaugurated the “Nanokubismus” exhibition by Rita Adolff-Wollfarth. The artist combines science and spirit in her paintings, hoping to make the connection between the two visible, a bridge she believes has been present since the beginning of the world. In her creative diversity she works on several cycles at the same time and besides Nanokubismus develops subjects such as Portuguese landscape portraits, voodoo and romantic abstracts. In recent years, she has exhibited in Brussels, Munich, Lisbon and Shanghai. Rita Adolff-Wollfarth grew up in the Upper Rhine in Germany, but at the moment lives and works primarily in her studio in the Algarve and in Munich. Eine Gruppe von teils an der Algarve lebenden und schaffenden holländischen Künstlern hat sich während der bekannten Romeria im andalusischen El Rocio fünf Tage lang unter das bunte Volk aus Wallfahrern, Spaniern und Zigeunern gemischt und ihre Erlebnisse in Fotos, Filmen, Zeichnungen, Gemälden und Gedichten festgehalten. Das Ergebnis kann man ab Samstag, dem 15. September im Musem von São Brás de Alportel bewundern. Die Ausstellungseröffnung wird ab 20.00 Uhr mit Flamencotanz und –gesang sowie Gedichten und Filmvorführungen gefeiert. Der Eintritt ist frei. A group of Dutch artists, some of them living and working in the Algarve, joined the motley crowd of pilgrims, Spaniards and gypsies during the well-known Romeria in the Andalusian town of El Rocio and captured their experiences in photos, films, drawings, paintings and poetry. The result can be admired in São Brás de Alportel Museum in an exhibition opening on September 15th. Starting at 8pm the opening features flamenco dance and song, as well as poems and film screenings. Free entrance.

Man kennt Chakall aus dem Fernsehen und als Autor diverser Kochbücher. Der passionierte Koch der einen Turban anstatt Kochmütze trägt, und ständig zwischen Portugal, Deutschland und China pendelt besitzt inzwischen fünf Restaurants in Portugal; das Praya und das Waves bei Almancil, das Quinta dos Frades in Lissabon, das Splendid in Braga und das Grappa in Porto. Chakall is known from the TV and as the author of various cooking books. The passionate chef, who wears a turban instead of a chef’s hat and commutes constantly between Portugal, Germany and China, owns five restaurants in Portugal so far. These include: Praya and Waves near Almancil, Quinta dos Frades in Lisbon, Splendid in Braga ans Grappa in Porto.
Life through a lens Born in 1969 in Sweden Malin Löfgren moved to the Algarve in 1995. As a journalist she worked with various publications in Portuguese, Swedish and English, until taking up her current position as communication advisor at the Regional Health Administration of the Algarve. Photography has piqued her interest ever since a child. Attending courses in analogue photography she developed a growing passion for the art of photography. She has subsequently made the conversion to digital and is now a board member of the Associação Livre Fotógrafos do Algarve (ALFA) photographers association. Having been awarded several times for her works, among others with the Prémio Cidade de Faro for her work “Viver a Ria” in 2008, her works have been seen at various regional and national exhibitions. 1969 in Schweden geboren, zog es Malin Löfgren 1995 in die Algarve, wo die Journalistin bei verschiedenen portugiesisch-, schwedisch- und englischsprachigen Publikationen mitwirkte, bis sie ihre heutige Stelle als Kommunikationsberaterin bei der regionalen Gesundheitsverwaltung der Algarve antrat. Für Fotografie interessiert sie sich seit ihrer frühen Jugend. Sie besuchte Kurse in analoger Fotografie und entwickelte eine große Leidenschaft für die Fotokunst. Jetzt arbeitet sie digital und ist Vorstandsmitglied der Fotografenvereinigung Associação Livre Fotógrafos do Algarve (ALFA). Bereits mehrfach für ihre Fotokunst ausgezeichnet, u.a. mit dem Prémio Cidade de Faro für ihre Arbeit “Viver a Ria” (2008), waren ihre Bilder bislang auf verschiedenen regionalen und nationalen Ausstellungen zu sehen. Autoeinfuhr nach Portugal
I
m vergangenen Jahr wurde ich im Alentejo zufällig Zeuge, wie Beamte einen nicht versicherten deutschen Wagen mit falschen Papieren, falschen Kennzeichen und ohne Tüv überprüften. Auweia, dachte ich. Ergebnis: Strafzettel wegen abgefahrener Reifen. Die Algarve ist allerdings nicht das Alentejo und die Kontrollen nehmen zu. Bei meinem Wagen handelt es sich um einen Renault Trafic, zugelassen als LKW, was den Ummeldungsprozess zu dem eines normalen PKW etwas unterscheidet. Der erste Weg führte mich ins Internet: Beim Heimat-Tüv in Deutschland gilt es, die sogenannte „ECE“-Bescheinigung zu beantragen – gelegentlich auch vereinfacht „Exportgutachten“ genannt. Gegen eine Gebühr von rund 100 Euro und die Einsendung des eingescannten KFZBriefes wird ein deutsch-portugiesisches Datenblatt angefertigt. Diese Übereinstimmungserklärung hat allerdings nichts mit der COC-Bescheinigung zu tun, sie ist für ältere Lkw nicht erforderlich. Für Pkw ist sie nötig. (Infos dazu gibt’s im Internet). Hat man dieses Papier, geht es als nächstes zur IMTT. Beim „Instituto da Mobilidade e dos Transportes Terrestres“ bekommt man die „Pedido certificado de Matrícula“, auch „modelo 9“ genannt.
Der nächste Schritt ergibt sich aus dem Unterpunkt „Certificação do representante oficial da marca“ auf dem Formular. In der Regel haben alle handelsüblichen Autos ihre eigene Typengenehmigungsnummer in Portugal, die sogenannte „numero do homologação“. Beim Tüv in Portugal wurde mir gesagt, dass nur ein Repräsentant der Marke hier vor Ort diesen Unterpunkt auf dem Formular ausfüllen darf. Der Opelhändler in Faro gab mir die Adresse der „ACAP“ (acap.pt). Die „Associação automóvel de Portugal“ ist Hüter der kleinen silbernen Siegel, die direkt auf das Formular „modelo 9“ geklebt werden. Also schickte ich das vorausgefüllte „modelo 9“, Kopien aller Fahrzeugpapiere, ein Foto von der Beifahrerseite und ein Scheck über hundert Euro nach Lissabon. Danach ging’s zum TÜV vor Ort, Kostenpunkt: 70 Euro. Leider Fehlanzeige. Der Warnblinker funktionierte nicht und die Spur der Vorderräder war leicht verstellt. Also besorgte ich mir erst eine Werkstatt, dann einen weiteren TÜV-Termin. Diesmal bestand mein Wagen, leider kostete die Zweitprüfung noch einmal 70 Euro. Auf meinen Protest hin, dass es sich ja wohl um eine Wiedervorführung handele, wies der TÜV-Mitarbeiter mit dem Daumen in

MIETRECHT: Der Hauseigentümer kann die Miete nicht einfach erhöhen, er muss den neuen Mietzins mit dem Mieter aushandeln. Gleichzeitig ist die Mietanpassung an die Entwicklung des Verbraucherpreis-Index gebunden, den das nationale Statistikamt INE jährlich zur Beobachtung der Inflation anhand des Warenkorbs ermittelt. Altmieten aus Verträgen von vor 1967 können um knapp fünf Prozent angehoben werden; laut INE liegen die Wohnpreise in acht von zehn solcher Fälle bei unter sechzig Euro. Das neue Mietrecht legt zudem eine Berücksichtigung des Einkommens bei der Mietpreisgestaltung fest: Wer weniger als fünfhundert Euro verdient, soll nicht mehr als fünfzig Euro zahlen, bei Einkünften bis zu 2.425 Euro darf der Mietzins bis zu 606 Euro betragen. Alte Menschen und Menschen mit Behinderungen genießen Kündigungsschutz, müssen sich aber der Mieterhöhung unterwerfen. Allgemein gilt: Wer länger als zwei Monate keine Miete gezahlt hat, dem droht die Räumung, und zwar ohne Gerichtsbeschluss. Der britische Global Property Guide listet Portugal auf Platz 13 der Länder mit den billigsten Mieten, die Tendenz deute zudem auf weiter sinkende Mieten hin. Der portugiesische Mieterverband APEMIP erklärte, eine 120-qm-Wohnung im guter Lage im Zentrum einer Stadt koste im Schnitt 2.213 Euro. ARBEITSRECHT: Abfindungen bei Entlassungen sinken von dreißig Tagesgehältern pro Arbeitsjahr auf zwanzig. Außerdem wurde für alle Abstandszahlungen die generelle Höchstgrenze von zwölf Monats-Gehältern oder das Äquivalent zu 240 Mindestlöhnen (240 x € 485 = € 116.400) festgeschrieben. Kompliziert wird die Anpassung veränderter arbeitsrechtlicher Verhältnisse an Verpflichtungen aus bestehenden Verträgen: Der Gesetzgeber will ein Mischsystem, in dem erworbene Rechte für die zurückliegende Zeit der Mitarbeit unangetastet bleiben und das Arbeitsverhältnis ab jetzt nach dem neuen Arbeitsrecht weiter geführt wird. Die Regierung will einen Fonds zum Rationalisierungs-Schutz (fundo de garantia) einrichten. Bis dahin bleiben die Betriebe alleine für die Abfindungen verantwortlich. Henrietta Bilawer

new legislation with a direct impact on social life comes into effect in Portugal. Tenancy law: Landlords cannot simply increase the rent; they must negotiate the new rent with the tenant. At the same time the rent adjustment is tied to developments of the consumer price index, which the national statistics office (INE) calculates annually to monitor inflation based on the consumer basket. The appointed date for the calculation is August 31st, with the index for 2012 being announced in September. According to pre-calculation this lies just under 3.35 percent and rents may increase up to this percentage (the highest since 2004) in 2013. Older tenancies with contracts dating before 1967 can have rental rates increased by nearly five percent. According to the INE, rental prices in eight out of ten such cases are less than sixty Euros. The new tenancy law also determines the consideration of income with regard to rental pricing: those who earn less than five hundred Euros should pay no more than fifty Euros; for incomes up to 2425 Euros, the rent may be as high as 606 Euros. The elderly and people with disabilities enjoy eviction protection, but must submit to the increase in rent. In general the following applies: if you have not paid rent for more than two months, you face eviction; and that without a court order. The British Global Property Guide ranks Portugal thirteenth of the countries with the cheapest rent, with an alleged tendency to a continued decrease in rents. The Portuguese Tenants Association APEMIP declared a 120-sqm apartment in a good location in the centre of a city would cost an average of 2213 Euros. LABOUR LAW: Redundancy payment falls from thirty days’ pay per year worked to twenty.
