Erste Bewertungen der diesjährigen Weinlese legen nahe, dass Qualität und Menge der in Portugal gekelterten Rebensäfte in diesem Jahr höher ist als 2011. Das staatliche Weinbauamt Instituto da Vinha e do Vinho (IVV) spricht von um fünf Prozent höheren Gesamterträgen. Die Lese begann vielerorts zwei Wochen später als geplant, um den Trauben Zeit für die notwendige Reifung zu geben und gerade die letzten heißen und trockenen Wochen eröffnen vielversprechende Perspektiven. Während in der Algarve etwa ein Fünftel weniger geerntet wurde, trugen die Rebstöcke im Anbaugebiet Setúbal und in der TejoRegion teils bis zu einem Drittel mehr Trauben als vor einem Jahr. In diesem Jahr blieben die Weinberge auf dem portugiesischen Festland auch von Schädlingen verschont. Nicht so auf dem Azoren: Mehltau und häufige starke und kalte Winde dezimierten die Ernte 2012 um bis zu siebzig Prozent.
Die sieben schönsten Strände Portugals sollten gefunden werden, Städte und Gemeinden wetteiferten um die Kandidatur-Tauglichkeit ihrer Gestade am Meer, an Flüssen und Seen – und nun stehen sie fest: Über 620.000 Teilnehmer stimmten im Internet oder per sms ab und kürten im Alentejo gleich zwei Strände – Vila Nove de Milfontes als Flussufer am Rio Sado und das bizarr geformte Ufer von Zambujeira do Mar; beide im Kreis Odemira. In der Algarve kam Odeceixe im Kreis Aljezur auf Rang Eins der Steilküsten. Alle weiteren Gewinner stehen auf www.7maravilhas.sapo.pt. Für 2013 war die Wahl der sieben wertvollsten Weine geplant, doch nun ziehen Wolken über den Wundern auf: Nachdem seit 2007 jedes Jahr ein anderer, auf Landesmaße ausgedehnter Schönheits-Wettbewerb „der großen Werte nationaler Identität“ von Bauwerken bis hin zur Kulinarik stattfand, fürchtet Organisator Luís Segadães, für nächstes Jahr fehle dem Wettbewerb, der vom Kulturministerium unterstützt wird, das Geld.
A good year Initial reviews for this year’s vintage suggest that quality and quantity of Portugal’s wines are higher this year than in 2011. The state’s viticulture office, the Instituto da Vinha e do Vinho speaks of a five percent increase in overall revenue. In many places the harvest began two weeks later than planned, in order to allow the grapes time for the necessary ripening and the recent hot and dry weeks open up promising prospects. While the Algarve harvest was reduced by around a fifth, the vines in the growing areas of Setúbal and the Tejo region carried up to a third more grapes than a year ago. This year, vineyards in mainland Portugal were spared the menace of pests. This was not the case in the Azores. Mildew and frequent strong and cold winds decimated the 2012 harvest by up to seventy percent.

The heart of the city During the “Cidades Invisíveis”(invisible cities) festival, Portimão’s Municipal Theatre invites visitors on a detailed foray through Barcelona’s world of culture. Exhibitions, ballet, concerts, theatre, films and more, all designed and presented by renowned Catalan artists. The festival follows the novel “The City of Marvels” from 1989, in which writer Eduardo Mendoza tells the life story of a young man in Barcelona at the beginning of the 20th century. The aim was to find Portugal’s seven most beautiful beaches. Cities and communities selected their best beaches by the sea, by rivers and lakes as contenders, and now the choices have been made. Around 620,000 participants voted on the Internet or via text message and elected two beaches in the Alentejo: Vila Nova de Milfontes – Furnas as a river beach, on the Rio Sado, and the bizarrely formed shoreline of Zambujeira do Mar, both in the Odemira district. ir sitzen mit dem Rücken zum Piloten und lassen uns von der weiß-blauen Cessna der Fallschirmsprungschule „Skydive Algarve“ in den Himmel tragen. Meine anfängliche Aufregung ist einer Vorfreude gewichen, wie ich sie nur selten empfunden habe. Ich verlasse mich auf die Professionalität und Erfahrung des Menschen in meinem Rücken und genieße die fantastische Aussicht über eine der schönsten Küstenformationen Europas. Nach 15 Minuten haben wir unsere Absprunghöhe von 3.600 Metern erreicht. Die Tür ist auf. Wie im Briefing am Boden trainiert, stelle ich zuerst die Beine auf die silberne Stufe des Flugzeugs. Trotz Drang nach unten zu sehen, die absurde Tiefe zu erfassen, lege ich meinen Kopf wie geübt nach hinten und

nach einem winzigen Augenblick sind wir frei. Die Maschine entschwindet über uns. Alles, was in den folgenden Sekunden und Minuten passiert, frisst sich in mein Gedächtnis und in meine Träume. Ein fantastisches Erleben von Leichtigkeit und Freiheit schaltet meine Wahrnehmung auf 150%, alle Anspannung ist verflogen. Und mit ihr das Gefühl für Zeit. Die Erde rast mir entgegen, Wind rauscht mit 200 kmh in meinen Ohren. Trotz der wahnsinnigen Geschwindigkeit scheine ich auf einem riesigen Luftkissen zu schweben. Luft hat sich noch nie so angefühlt wie jetzt. Als Kind konnte ich in meinen Träumen fliegen, jetzt mache ich es! Wie mit einem optischen Zoom baut sich vor mir die Küste der Algarve auf. Ich sehe die Felslinie, die sich bis
nach Sagres erstreckt. Direkt unter mir ergießt sich die Ria de Alvor sandig in das kristallklare Wasser des Atlantik, in dem Segelboote weiße Spuren hinterlassen. Die erdigen Töne der Serra de Monchique gehen nahtlos in die Wolken unter dem ewigen Blau der Algarve über. Ich spüre eine Hand zweimal auf meine Schulter klopfen. Meine Arme umschließen das Gurtzeug, und der freie Fall wird abrupt durch das Öffnen des Hauptschirms beendet. Das Erlebnisgewitter in meinem Kopf ebbt ab, und ich genieße die letzten 1.500 Meter im sanften Gleitflug. Alles ist gut, von oben betrachtet ist alles sehr relativ geworden, und die zielgenaue Landung vor dem Hangar ist Erleichterung und Sehnsucht zugleich. Erdenmensch, du bist wieder am Boden.

My initial excitement has given way to the kind of butterflies I have rarely felt before. I put my faith in the professionalism and experience of the person to whom I am attached and enjoy the fantastic view over one of the most beautiful coastal formations in Europe. After 15 minutes we have reached our jump altitude of 3600 metres. The door is open. As in the briefing, practised down on the ground, I first place my legs on the plane’s silver step. Despite an urge to look down, to capture this absurd depth, I lay my head back as practiced and after a brief moment we are free. The aircraft

vanishes above us. Everything that happens in the next few seconds and minutes bores into my memory and my dreams. A fantastic experience of lightness and freedom sends my senses into overdrive and all tension disappears. And with it any sense of time. The earth rushes towards me. The wind roars in my ears at 200 km/h. Despite the insane speed it feels as if I’m floating on a huge cushion of air. Air has never felt like this before. As a child I could fly in my dreams, now I’m doing it for real! As if through an optical zoom the Algarve’s coastline unfolds before my eyes. I can see the cliff line stretching all the way to Sagres. Directly below me the sandy Ria de Alvor pours out into the crystal clear waters of the Atlantic, where sailing boats leave white trails behind them. The earthy hues of the Serra de Monchique merge seamlessly with the clouds
beneath the eternal blue of the Algarve. I feel a hand tapping my shoulder twice. My arms encircle the harness and the free fall is abruptly ended as the main chute billows open. The dervish of experiences in my head subsides and I enjoy the last 1500 metres at a gentle glide. Everything is fine, viewed from above everything has become very relative, and the perfect landing in front of the hangar smacks of relief and longing at the same time. CROQUET Premieren-Turnier in Portugals erstem Croquet-Club Inaugural tournament at Portugal’s first croquet club

ierzig Mitglieder und Gäste des Rotary Clubs International aus Estoi trafen sich am 2. September im Bela Romão Croquet Club, um das vierjährige Bestehen des Vereins zu feiern und – natürlich –, um ein Turnier zu spielen. Nach der Begrüßung durch Präsidentin Claire Larson wurden die Teilnehmer in Vierer-Gruppen eingeteilt. Um 17.30 traten die ersten Teams auf dem bestens manikürten Rasen des Croquet-Platzes gegeneinander an, um mit möglichst wenigen Schlägen die Holzkugel durch die Hoops (Drahtbügel) zu befördern. „Der Schlag muss aus den Schultern kommen,“ so Coach David Denman, „und der Kopf sollte bis zum Treffen der Kugel unten bleiben.“ Gastgeberin Lita Gale zeigte sich begeistert: „ Wir sind entzückt so viele Rotarier bei uns im Club zu haben und haben bereits einige talentierte Spieler gesehen, und wir hoffen möglichst bald, mit den richtigen Wettkämpfen zu beginnen, deshalb suchen wir nach neuen Mitgliedern für unseren Verein.“ Und so war das Spiel eher als eine Trainingseinheit zu betrachten, als ernsthaft ausgeführtes PräzisionsCroquet. Doch es gab Sieger: In der Mannschaftswertung siegte das Team Jim Bell, Mary McClay, Pauline Burnham und Mike Kell. Das Ergebnis der Spielerwertung: 1. Platz Robin Wilson, Zweiter wurde Mike Kell, Dritte June Brown.

eptember 2nd saw forty members and guests of the Rotary Club International from Estoi come together at the Bela Romão Croquet Club in order to celebrate the fourth anniversary of the club and - of course - to play a tournament. After being welcomed by President Claire Larson the participants were divided into groups of four. At 5.30pm the first teams lined up on the well-manicured croquet lawn, with the aim of getting the wooden ball through the hoops in as few strokes as possible. “The stroke has to come from the shoulders,” says coach
David Denman, “and the head should stay down until the ball is hit.” Hostess Lita Gale enthused: “We are delighted to have so many Rotarians in our club and have already seen a number of talented players. We hope to start with real competitions as soon as possible, that’s why we’re looking for new members for our club.” And so the game was to be regarded as more of a training session, than seriously executed precision croquet. But there were winners: the team competition went to the team of Jim Bell, Mary McClay, Pauline Burnham and Mike Kell. Individual standings saw Robin Wilson in first place with Mike Kell second, and June Brown placed third. Die Hohe Schule im Reitsport hat eine lange Tradition in Portugal
ie Geschichte der klassischen Reitkunst reicht zurück bis ins antike Griechenland. In Portugal hat diese Art des Pferdesports ebenfalls eine lange Tradition, die bislang überwiegend im Nationalpalast in Queluz in der Escola Portuguesa de Arte Equestre praktiziert wird. Seit gut zwei Jahren lassen sich Hohe Schule und Dressurreiten auch in der Algarve erlernen – bei Real Picadeiro in Péra. Erfahrene Reitlehrer wie Luís Valença und Luis Santos haben es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht, die Ästhetik des Dressursports einem breiteren Publikum zu eröffnen. Bestens für diese Reitkunst geeignet, sind die rassigen Lusitaner, gelehrige, intelligente, sehr menschenbezogene, nervenstarke und äußerst wendige Vollblüter, die eng verwandt sind mit Andalusiern und berberischen Pferden. Selbst Kinder und Jugendliche, wie Renato Felício kommen – nach entsprechendem Training – bestens mit den lusitanischen Hengsten zurecht und vollführen nahezu perfekte Passagen, Piaffen, Traversalen oder Gallopp-Pirouetten. Fortgeschrittene Reiter wie Dominic Carrilho, der hier seit Oktober 2011 drei bis vier Mal pro Woche jeweils eine Stunde trainiert, schwören, dass Reiten auf diesen prachtvollen Tieren fast schon eine Therapie ist, bei der man mit dem Pferd zu einer Einheit verschmilzt und sämtliche Sorgen dieser Welt vergessen kann. Spektakulär sind die regelmäßigen abendlichen Shows in der Reithalle von Real Picadeiro.

he history of classical horsemanship dates back to ancient Greece. In Portugal, this kind of equestrian sport also has a long tradition, until now primarily practised in the Escola Portuguesa de Arte Equestre in the National Palace in Queluz. But for about two years now High School and Classical Dressage is also being taught in the Algarve - at the Real Picadeiro in Pêra. Experienced riding instructors like Luís Valença and Luís Santos have made it their mission to bring the beauty of dressage to a wider audience. Lusitanos are perfectly suited to this horsemanship. Docile, intelligent, very people ori-
ented, these strong-nerved and extremely manoeuvrable thoroughbreds are closely related to Andalusian and Berber horses. Even children and teenagers, like Renato Felício get along perfectly with lusitano stallions and can perform near-perfect passages, piaffes, canter half passes or canter pirouettes after appropriate training. Intermediate riders like Dominic Carrilho, who has been training here three to four times per week for an hour since October 2011, swears that riding on these magnificent animals can almost be considered a therapy, Universo in which you become one with the horse and leave all the worries of the world behind you. Weht einem dann die steife Atlantikbrise um die Nase, welche die verschwitzten Trikots innerhalb von Minuten trocknet, ist man am Ziel – am Kap des Heiligen Vinzenz. Und bei dem Anblick der unendlichen Weite des Ozeans schmeckt ein gut gekühltes Sagres besonders gut. Fazit: Der Trip lässt sich in fünf Tagen gut schaffen. Wichtig: viel trinken, Wasser und isotonische Getränke. Zinksalbe ist ein guter Sonnenschutz für Nase, Lippen und Ohrläppchen.

he Via Algarviana is part of the E4 European longdistance path, which will connect Europe’s most southwestern point, the Cabo de São Vicente, via Spain and France with Cyprus. The section from Alcoutim to the windswept Cape is based on an ancient pilgrimage route dating back to the 6th Century. But you can also use the 300-km hiking trail for a wonderful mountain bike ride - a real challenge, because the trail is very demanding and passes primarily through unspoilt hinterland. Although you can cycle along the well-marked route (GR 13) on your own quite easily, you’re better off with an organised tour, because then you don’t have to carry a heavy backpack around. Alcoutim is usually the starting point. The first section of the route leads from here through the Ribeira de Foupana and wide rolling hills to the hamlet of Ferraris. Celts, Romans and Moors once mined copper, pyrite, iron ore and manganese in the nearby Parque Mineiro. From Vaqueiros towards Cachopo and then to Barranco do Velho, the route gets quite difficult taking you through the Serra de Caldeirão. The devastating forest fires in July have only left

ie Via Algarviana ist Teil des Europäischen Fernwanderweges E4, der den südwestlichsten Zipfel Europas – Cabo de São Vicente – via Spanien, Frankreich bis nach Zypern verbinden soll. Der Abschnitt von Alcoutim bis zum windumtosten Kap basiert auf einer alten Pilgerroute aus dem 6. Jahrhundert. Der etwa 300 km lange Wanderweg lässt sich aber auch wunderbar mit dem Mountainbike befahren – eine echte Herausforderung, denn der Trail ist sehr anspruchsvoll und führt weitgehend durch unberührtes Hinterland. Die gut ausgeschilderte Strecke (GR 13) lässt sich zwar auch alleine fahren, besser aufgehoben ist man jedoch bei organisierten Touren, denn dann entfällt das Problem, einen schweren Rucksack mitschleppen zu müssen. Ausgangspunkt ist gewöhnlich Alcoutim. Der erste Streckenabschnitt führt von hier durch die Ribeira de Foupana und weites gewelltes Hügelland bis zum Weiler Ferraris. Im nahen Parque Mineiro haben schon Kelten, Römer und Mauren Kupfer, Pyrit, Eisenerz und Mangan geschürft. Ab Vaqueiros in Richtung Cachopo und weiter bis Barronco do Velho wird die Route recht schwierig und führt durch die Serra de Caldeirão. Von den Korkeichen- und Pinienwäldern sind nach den verheerenden Waldbränden im Juli nur noch schwarz verkohlte Baumstümpfe und kahle Bergrücken vorhanden. Recht angenehm fährt es sich auf dem Abschnitt Salir, Alte, Messines nach Silves vorbei an den markanten Karstfelsen von Rocha da Pena (63 km, 2.600 Höhenmeter). Der Anstieg von hier bis zum 902 Meter hohem Foia ist knackig, anstrengend, bespickt mit Tragepassagen, entlohnt aber mit einer traumhaften Aussicht auf die Küste (46 km, 2.900 Höhenmeter). Dagegen sind die nächsten 78 Kilometer von der Serra de Monchique vorbei

black charred stumps and barren ridges of the cork oak and pine forests. The ride along the section Salir, Alte, Messines to Silves is a particular treat, past the distinctive karst rocks of the Rocha da Pena (63 km, 2600 m difference in altitude). The rise from here to Foia, at an altitude of 902 metres, is crisp, tiring, and studded with stretches where the bicycle needs to be carried, but rewards cyclists with a magnificent view of the coast (46 km, 2900 m difference in altitude). By contrast, the next 78 km of the Serra de Monchique, past the Barragem da Bravura reservoir via Bensafrim, Vila do Bispo and Sagres is almost relaxing. Once you feel the stiff Atlantic breeze in your face, which dries any sweaty apparel within minutes, you’re on target – Cape St. Vincent. Contemplating the vastness of the ocean, an ice-cold Sagres tastes especially great. Conclusion: the trip can be easily done in five days. Important: drink a lot of water and isotonic drinks. Zinc ointment is a good sun protection for nose, lips and earlobes. ortugal ist das „Land der 500 autochthonen Rebsorten“. Das ist weltweit einzigartig und eine Tatsache, auf die portugiesische Winzer ziemlich stolz sind. Die wichtigsten roten Sorten sind Alfrocheiro, Aragonez, Baga, Bastardo, Castelão Francês (Periquita, Santarém), Sousao (Vinhao), Tinta Barroca, Touriga Francês (mit über 25% Rebfläche die meistangebaute Sorte), Touriga Nacional und Trincadeira Preta. Alle diese Reben haben eins gemeinsam – sie sind anfällig gegen Schädlinge wie Mehltau, Grauschimmel und Rebläuse. Um Ernteverlusten vorzubeugen, verwenden fast alle einheimischen Winzer Fungizide, Insektizide und Pestizide. Selbst bei der Produktion sogenannter „Bio-Weine“ darf – eingeschränkt – die „chemische Keule“ eingesetzt werden. Dass es auch anders geht, beweist Hans-Heinrich Borchert auf seiner Farm Terrawine unweit von Altura an der Ostgarve. Er verwendet für die Erzeugung seiner hochwertigen Weine ausschließlich die Rebe Chambourcin. Klingt ein wenig nach Weichkäse, ist aber eine französische Neuzüchtung (1963 durch Johannes Seyve aus Lyon), die ideal für das subtropische Klima der Region Tavira-Vila Real ist. Die Rebsorte ist resistent gegen Schädlingsbefall und gedeiht hier prächtig – und völlig ohne die für Mensch und Umwelt schädlichen synthetischen

chemischen Spritzgifte. Sobald die mittelgroßen Trauben den richtigen Reifegrad erreicht haben, beginnt im Oktober die Lese, die sich bis in den November hineinziehen kann. Auch ein Novum unter den Weinen der Algarve. Der gelernte Maschinenbau-Ingenieur hat ein Verfahren entwickelt, den Fermentationsprozess der von Hand gelesenen Trauben, die ein Mostgewicht von 110 – 127 Oechsle (vergleichbar mit der deutschen Trockenbeerenauslese) haben, innerhalb weniger Tage durchzuführen – ohne jegliche Zuckerzugabe. Dank dieses Verfahrens benötigt der Wein auch keine malolaktische 2. Gärung und keine Lagerung in Barrique-Fässern. Das Ergebnis ist ein 100% natürlicher Wein mit 12,5% Alkoholgehalt, der nach der Flaschenabfüllung mit Amorim Twin-Kork und synthetischem roten Siegelwachs nahezu luftdicht verschlossen wird und 15 Jahre lagerfähig ist. Bei der Degustation überzeugt der Wein durch seine dichte schwarzrote Farbe, einem zartsüßen Fruchtbouquet, Aromen, die an einen exzellenten Amarone aus Valpolicella erinnern, weiche Tannine und nachhaltigem Abgang – ein Wein also, der auch die Damenwelt begeistern wird, denn mit einem ph-Wert von nur 3,9 dürfte der Chambourcin keine Adstringenz auslösen. ortugal is the “land of the 500 indigenous grape varieties”. This is unique in the world and a fact that Portuguese winemakers are quite proud of. The most important red varieties are Alfrocheiro, Aragonez, Baga, Bastardo, Castelão Francês (Periquita, Santarém), Sousão (Vinhão), Tinta Barroca, Touriga Francês (with over 25% of vineyard area, the most planted variety), Touriga Nacional and Trincadeira Preta. All these vines have one thing in common - they are susceptible to pests such as mildew, grey mould and grape phylloxera. In order to prevent crop losses, nearly all local winegrowers use fungicides, insecticides and pesticides. Even in the production of so-called “organic wines” the “chemical mace” may be used, albeit restrictedly. On his Terrawine estate near Altura in the Eastern Algarve Hans-Heinrich Borchert proves that there is another way. He exclusively uses Chambourcin grapes for his high-quality wines. The name brings to mind a soft cheese, but this is actually a new French breed (1963 by Joannes Seyve from Lyons), which is ideally suited to the subtropical climate of the Tavira - Vila Real de Santo António region. This variety is resistant to pests and thrives magnificently here - and that without any use of poisonous synthetic chemical sprays, harmful to human beings as well as the environment. Once the mid-sized grapes have reached the right level of maturity, the harvest begins in October and can drag into November. This is also a novelty among the wines of the Algarve. The trained mechanical engineer has developed a method to accomplish the fermentation process of the hand harvested grapes, which possess a must weight of 110 - 127 Oechsle degrees, within a few days – without any addition of sugar. Thanks to this process, the wine does not require a second malolactic fermentation or storage in wooden casks. The result is a 100% natural wine with an alcohol content of 12.5%. After bottling it is stoppered with an Amorim Twin cork and synthetic red sealing wax and has a shelf life of 15 years. On tasting it convinces with its dense black red colour, a delicately sweet fruit bouquet. The flavour is reminiscent of an excellent Amarone from Valpolicella, with soft tannins and a lasting finish. This is a wine to suit more delicate palates; with its ph value of only 3.9 the Chambourcin should reveals little astringency. Urs Mayer

er jüngste von Vilamouras fünf Plätzen wurde gezielt als Meisterschaftsplatz gebaut und hat seine ihm zugedachte Rolle bisher stilvoll erfüllt. Im Jahre 2005 fand hier der WGC World Cup statt und seit 2007 empfängt der Victoria Platz in jedem Oktober das Portugal Masters Turnier. Als längster Platz Portugals (6.609 m) ist Victoria eine verlockende Herausforderung für Profis, während Amateurspieler sich über die fünf Tees freuen. Wenn Golfer diesen Platz im “Stadion-Stil” beschreiben, fallen immer wieder die Worte Spaß, Herausforderung und interessant – und natürlich “groß”. Als einer der wenigen Arnold Palmer ‘Signature’ Plätze, bei denen der Veteran intensiv am Design-Prozess beteiligt war, erstreckt sich der Victoria über das große sanft hügelige Gelände des ehemaligen Flugplatzes von Vilamoura. Was ihm an Bäumen und Höhenunterschieden fehlt macht er mit viel Wasser-
hindernissen und Bunkern in allen möglichen Größen und Formen mehr als wett. Die flache und küstennahe Lage wird zudem durch die in der Region vorherrschenden Winde kompliziert, so dass der Wind dort oft des Spielers schlimmster Feind ist. Außer dem sehr anspruchsvollen 7. Loch, ein sehr langer Par 4, wegen der schwierigen Seen als ‘Monster’ bekannt, besitzen die ersten neun Löcher sehr wenig Wasserhindernisse. Jede Menge Bunker, merkwürdige Hügel und verwirrende Konturen können die Schlaggenauigkeit jedoch zunichte machen. Bei den letzten neun Löchern gibt es dafür umso mehr Wasser, oft umrahmt es sogar den gesamten Fairway (11., 12., 14., 17., 18.) und versperrt den Weg zum Grün. Diese spannende Kombination aus Wasser und sorgfältig platziertem Sand steigert den Nervenkitzel und das Gefühl der Erleichterung, wenn man es unversehrt zu einem der großen und schnellen Grüns schafft.

Vorsicht beim schwierigen 16. Loch, ein sehr langer Par 3 (190 m) mit von einem Bunker geschütztem Grün und Wasser, das nur auf einen übereifrigen Abschlag wartet. Die letzten beiden Löcher bieten einen unvergesslichen Abschluss der Victoria Runde. Das 17. Loch besitzt eine Reihe von Wasserkaskaden und lockt (Par 5) den Mutigen mit einem interessanten Über-Wasser-Schlag, um dann allerhöchste Genauigkeit beim Spiel auf das sehr kleine Grün zu verlangen, welches von noch mehr des lästigen blauen Zeugs umgeben ist. Das 18. Loch hingegen frustriert mit Wasser entlang der gesamten linken Seite des Fairways und einer Reihe von Bunkern auf der rechten Seite. Ein schönes und spannendes Ende nach einer ebenso schwierigen wie lohnenden Golfrunde. T
he most recent of Vilamoura’s five courses, Victoria was purpose built as a championship course. It has grasped this role with style, hosting the WGC World Cup in 2005 and since 2007 has held the Portugal Masters every October. As Portugal’s longest course (6.609 metres), Victoria is a tempting challenge for pros, while the five sets of tees bring a smile to amateur players’ faces. Indeed, golfer reactions after playing this “stadium-style” course often contain adjectives such as fun, challenging and interesting, as well as the predictable “big”. One of the few Arnold Palmer ‘Signature’ courses, in which the veteran was very involved in the design process, Victoria develops over a large expanse of gently undulating terrain, formerly Vilamoura’s aerodrome, and what it lacks in trees and elevation changes, it more than makes up for with plenty of water hazards and bunkers in all manner of sizes and configurations. This flatness and near coastal location is further complicated by the region’s prevailing winds, ensuring that wind is often the player’s worst enemy. Forgetting the very tricky 7th, a very long par-4 known as the ‘Monster’ thanks to challenging lakes, the front nine has very little water. A wealth of bunkers, curious hillocks and perplexing contours can play havoc with shot accuracy however. In the back nine water appears with a vengeance, often hugging the entire fairway (11th, 12th, 14th, 17th, 18th) and blocking

the way to the green. This exciting combination of water and carefully placed sand adds to the thrill and to the feeling of relief when you make it unscathed to one of the large and fast greens. Watch out for the tricky 16th, a very long par-3 (190m), with its bunker protected green and water waiting an overzealous tee-off. The final two holes provide a memorable finale to playing Victoria. The signature 17th (par 5) with its series of water cascades, tempts the brave with a very rewarding over-the-water approach, only to demand ultimate accuracy if you want to hit the diminutive green, surrounded with more of that pesky blue stuff. For its part, the 18th frustrates with water all along the left of the fairway and a host of bunkers all along the right. A beautiful and thrilling end to a taxing yet rewarding course. Away from the fairway, Victoria boasts exceptional practice facilities, with driving range and large putting green (2500m²) and a classy clubhouse, with its tropical atrium and bar and restaurant to end your game in style. flaniert, und das ist jedermann gestattet, entdeckt neben Putten, Büsten und kunstvollen blauweißen Kacheln auch Reminiszenzen an italienische Parks. Der Palast, so wie er heute zu bewundern ist, wurde zwischen 1840 und 1847 völlig umgebaut. Doch erst 1893, als der spätere Vizegraf von Estoi Francisco José da Silva das pompöse Anwesen von den Nachkommen der Carvalhas übernahm, erhielten die 28 Zimmer und Anhänge ihr jetziges Aussehen im Stil Louis XV. Als die Renovierungsarbeiten 1909 abgeschlossen wurden, erlebte das Städtchen Estoi die wohl größte Party seiner Zeit. Heute gehört der Palácio der Gruppe Pousadas de Portugal.

ueluz do Sul, der Glanz des Südens strahlt nicht mehr, sticht aber als pinkfarbener barocker Pomp jedem deutlich ins Auge, der in seinem Fahrzeug auf der A22 von Faro Richtung spanische Grenze unterwegs ist. Es lohnt sich dieses, propere Schlösschen in Estoi einmal näher zu betrachten, denn es ist in seiner Art einzigartig in der Algarve. Ausgestattet mit verschwenderischem Reichtum ließ ein gewisser Francisco José Moreira de Brito e Vasconcelos Carvahal auf dem geerbten Anwesen seines Vaters 1782 - 1783 einen ländlichen Herrensitz errichten. Als Vorbild diente ihm der Palácio Nacional de Queluz, eine der größten Rokoko-Schlossanlagen Europas. Ganz so voluminös konnte der protzsüchtige Adelsherr seinen Palast nicht bauen, fehlte es doch an Platz, deshalb ist hier alles minimaler und überschaubarer, doch wunderschön. Was wohl die wenigsten wissen, das Wort „Barock“ entstammt der portugiesischen Sprache. Mit barocco bezeichneten die Portugiesen unschön geformte Perlen. Bei der Anlage des Parks orientierte sich der Bauherr an André Le Nôtre, den obersten Gartenarchitekten des „Sonnenkönigs“ Ludwig XIV. Wer durch den Garten

ecognisable to anyone who has driven past Estoi on the A22 towards Spain, the pink baroque pomp of Estoi Palace is the Algarve’s answer to stately architecture. This neat little palace in the village north of Faro is well worth closer inspection, with nothing like it to be found elsewhere in the region. Wealthy landowner Francisco José Moreira de Brito e Vasconcelos Carvalhal commissioned a country estate in the style of the Palácio Nacional de Queluz, one of the largest rococo palaces in Europe located just outside Lisbon. The palace was built between 1782 and 1783, but due to lack of space the ostentatious nobleman was unable match the proportions of
its Queluz counterpart. As a result everything is on a smaller scale here, but just as beautiful. Few people may be aware that the word “baroque” comes from the Portuguese language, with the word barocco used by the Portuguese to describe imperfect pearls. When creating the park, the estate owner took inspiration from André Le Nôtre, the head landscape architect of the “Sun King” Louis XIV. Those who take a stroll through the garden, which is open to all, will be reminded of Italian parks, with cherubs, busts and ornate blue and white tiles. The palace took on its current form when completely rebuilt from 1840 to 1847. But it wasn’t until 1893, when the future Viscount of Estoi, Francisco José da Silva, took over the grand estate from the descendants of the Carvalhas, that the 28 rooms and annexes received their present look in the style of Louis XV. When the renovation works were completed in 1909, the village of Estoi celebrated its greatest ever party. The Palácio is now a hotel, with a stunning modern annex, and belongs to the Pousadas de Portugal group. Barbara Hutter

ie Deutsche Botschaft Lissabon kündigt „einen neuen Leckerbissen für die Freunde des deutschen Kabaretts in Portugal“ an: Im Oktober tritt Luise Kinseher, eine der bekanntesten bayerischen Kabarettistinnen, in Lissabon und in Lagoa auf. Unter dem Titel „Einfach reich“ lädt sie das Publikum zu einer Auszeit auf der Alm ein. Dorthin hat es sie selbst verschlagen, denn sie hat den Alltag in der Wohlstands-Gesellschaft satt und will es mal mit einem kargen Leben bei selbstgebackenem Brot und frischem Quellwasser in der Gesellschaft von ein paar ehrlichen Kühen versuchen und weit weg von der Welt, arm und glücklich sein: In einem fulminanten FigurenSzenario betrachtet die Vollblut-Kabarettistin in ihrem neuen Programm ein Mysterium: Was ist eigentlich „Besitz“? Warum denken wir alle immerzu ans Geld? Warum sehnen wir uns nach einem eigenen Häuschen? Wieso sammeln wir unnützes Zeug? Ein Programm zum Entrümpeln, nicht nur in Krisenzeiten! Mitte Oktober wird Kinseher ihre bayerischen Heimatbühnen verlassen und für die „Lissabonner Kabarettabende“ nach Portugal reisen. Beim Dance World Cup 2012 im österreichischen Villach tanzten sich fünf Ballerinas aus Portugal auf Platz Eins in der Sparte klassisches Ballett. Ana Oliveira, Maria Eduarda, Ana Margarida, Catarina Paiva und Beatriz Lopes brachten die Goldmedaille eines der wichtigsten Tanzwettbewerbe weltweit nach Hause und fühlten sich bei diesem ersten großen Erfolg portugiesischer Tänzer auf dem internationalen Parkett und einer Konkurrez aus 25 Ländern „spektakulär und unbeschreiblich“. Die Tänzer, die für ihren Sieg praktisch auf alles verzichteten, was andere in ihrem Alter unternehmen, erklären, beim Tanzen gebe es eben nur Ganz oder Garnicht. Nicht nur der Tanz selbst wirkte auf Publikum und Jury: In einer Choreografie aus Neoklassik und Moderne tauchten sie die Bühne in ungewöhnliche Licht- und Schattenspiele und ließen ihre Darbietung wie ein lebendig gewordenes Fotos erscheinen. At the 2012 Dance World Cup in Villach, Austria, five ballerinas from Portugal danced all the way to number one in the classical ballet category. Ana Oliveira, Maria Eduarda, Ana Margarida, Catarina Paiva and Beatriz Lopes took home the gold medal in one of the most important dance competitions worldwide and felt “spectacular and indescribable” with this first major success for Portuguese dancers on the international scene, in an event with 25 countries competing. The dancers, who for their win sacrificed practically everything others of their age take for granted, revealed that with dancing it’s all or nothing. Dance wasn’t the only thing to have an impact on the audience and jury: in a neo-classical and contemporary choreography they immersed the stage in an unusual display of light and shadow, making their performance appear as if a photo brought to life.

iele Menschen sorgen sich um die jährliche Inspektion ihrer Vehikel, aber wie sieht es mit ihrem eigenen Fahrgestell aus? Es interessiert, ob der Motor des Wagens funktionstüchtig ist, doch sie haben Hemmungen davor, zu erfahren, wie es um sie und ihrem Motor bestellt ist. Nicht selten warten sie mit dem Arztbesuch so lange, bis Symptome einer Krankheit bereits aufgetreten und damit spürbar geworden sind. Der klassische Check-up sollte eine Art Jahresinspektion sein, die den Ist-Zustand des Körpers darstellen. Er enthält in der Regel Blutbild, EKG und Ultraschalluntersuchungen der wichtigsten Organe. Im Idealfall bespricht der Arzt dabei auch das familiäre und soziale Umfeld, sowie die Lebensbedingungen des Patienten, welche nicht selten Teil oder sogar Ursache eines Leidens sind. Ein Eckpfeiler des Check-up ist das Blutbild, welches mit zahlreichen Parametern dem Arzt gleichsam als Spiegelbild des gesundheitlichen Zustands des Patienten dient. Bei erhöhten Creatinin etwa erfährt man etwas über eine wahrscheinlich geschädigte Nierenfunktion. Hohe Cholesterinwerte können zu Infarkt und Schlaganfall führen. Triglyceride sind Blutfette, die häufiger in der Nahrung vorkommen, als die meisten Patienten wissen, und sie sind dabei nicht minder gefährlich für den Organismus.
Blutzucker und die damit verbundene Diabetes ist als Volkskrankheit bekannt. Ihre Behandlung und Einstellung jedoch höchst komplex und individuell. Das EKG zeigt ein wiederkehrendes Bild der elektrischen Herzaktion, die Spannungsänderungen des Herzens können dabei an der Körperoberfläche gemessen werden. Arrhythmien, Extrasystolen oder ein vergrößertes Herz lassen sich im EKG ablesen. Kein Computerprogramm jedoch kann den erfahrenen Blick eines Hausarztes ersetzen! In der Ultraschalluntersuchung erhält der Arzt weitere Bilder, über den Organzustand des Patienten. Er erkennt beispielsweise an Größe und Beschaffenheit der Leber etwas über die Ernährungs- und Trinkgewohnheiten des Patienten. Auch Tumore und verengte Gefäße können sichtbar gemacht werden. Idealerweise sollte über das Grundprogramm hinaus auch an Krebsvorsorge gedacht werden. Bereits die sogenannte Blutsenkung kann ein Krebsindikator sein, ebenso wie die Hämoglobine, die Aufschluss über Blutarmut geben. Often they delay a visit to the doctor until the symptoms of an illness have become apparent and can be felt. The classic check up should be a kind of annual inspection, which shows the actual state of the body. It usually contains a blood count, ECG and ultrasound examinations of the major organs. Ideally the doctor will also discuss the family and social environment, as well as the living conditions of the patient, which quite often are part of or even the cause of a condition. A cornerstone of the check-up is the blood count, which gives the doctor a reflection of the patient’s health status with its many parameters. For example a higher creatinine level might be a sign of a damaged kidney function. High cholesterol levels can lead to a heart attack or stroke. Triglycerides are blood lipids, which

are more common in the diet than many patients are aware, and they are no less dangerous for the organism. High blood sugar or the diabetes associated with it is a widespread disease. Its treatment and adjustment however is highly complex and individual. The ECG shows a repeating image of electrical cardiac activity; it allows the measurement of the heart’s voltage changes on the body’s surface. Arrhythmia, extra systoles, or an enlarged heart can be read in the ECG. However no computer program can replace the experienced eye of a family doctor! The ultrasound examination presents the doctor with more pictures about the condition of the patient’s body. He recognises, for example, something about the patient’s eating and drinking habits by the size and condition of their
liver. Tumours and narrowed vessels can be made visible. Ideally the basic programme should be extended to include cancer prevention. The so-called erythrocyte sedimentation can already be a cancer indicator, as well as haemoglobin, which provides information about anaemia. Die erfolgreiche Bilderschau in den Räumlichkeiten des im 16. Jahrhundert erbauten Klarissenklosters, eine Retropesktive der Gemälde-Ausstellung in Shanghai im Mai 2012, endete am 30. September. Höhepunkt war zweifellos die Finissage am 29. September mit dem abschließenden Solo-Konzert der talentierten russischen Pianistin Aglaya Sintschenko in der von einem prachtvollen zweistöckigen Kreuzgang umgebenen Gartenanlage. Das war emotional, einfühlsam und wunderschön.

Art in the Convent What painter Rita Adolff–Wollfarth handed a very stunned José Macârio Correia during her exhibition opening at the Museu Municipal de Faro could well be the largest certificate that has ever found its way into the mayor’s office. Her successful show held in the 16th-century convent, a retrospective of a painting exhibition held in Shanghai in May 2012, ended on September 30th. The highlight was undoubtedly the closing event on September 29th with the solo concert of talented Russian pianist Aglaya Sintschenko in the garden surrounded by a beautiful twostorey cloister. This was emotional, sensitive and beautiful.

Die (T)Raumretterin Eva Brenner ist Innenarchitektin und Einrichtungsexpertin bei RTL2. Sie und ihre Handwerker kommen dann, wenn andere nicht mehr weiter wissen. So geschehen neulich in Armacão de Pêra. Die Tropicana Bar war in die Jahre gekommen, lief nicht mehr so wie früher. In ihrer Not wandte sich Sabine, die Eigentümerin des bekannten Szene-Treffs an die Traumretterin. Die rückte auch prompt mit ihrem Bauteam an und verwandelte innerhalb von nur 5 Tagen den 17 Jahre alten Genuss-Schuppen in eine zeitgemäße, gemütliche Bar. Jetzt sind Sabine und ihre Gäste wieder glücklich.
To the rescue Eva Brenner is an interior designer and furnishing expert on German TV channel RTL2. She and her builders come to the rescue when all hope is lost. And this is just what happened recently, in Armação de Pêra. The Tropicana Bar was getting on a bit and wasn’t as popular as it had once been. In her distress the bar’s owner Sabine, turned to Eva, who promptly came with her building team and within five days transformed the 17-year-old drink hole into a contemporary, cosy bar. Now Sabine and her guests are happy again.

ie Finanzkrise in der EU beeinflusst auch das Leben von Migranten. Die Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung stellte in einer Studie fest, dass im finanziell bedrängten Griechenland fremdenfeindliche Übergriffe deutlich zunehmen. Die Einwanderungs- und Integrationspolitik des neuen Präsidenten François Hollande in Frankreich fällt nicht so liberal aus, wie es viele Menschen erhofft hatten. In Italien haben seit Beginn der Wirtschaftskrise eine Million Ausländer ihre Wahlheimat wieder verlassen. Ähnliches gilt für Spanien; dort gibt es seit September keine kostenlose Gesundheitsversorgung für Migranten ohne Aufenthaltserlaubnis mehr. Auch viele Portugal-Zuwanderer kehren nach Hause zurück, andere wandern weiter, in EU-Staaten mit besserer Arbeitsmarkt-Verheißungen. Ausländische Arbeitnehmer sind für das Wirtschaftwachstum wichtig, doch schot-
ten sich die Länder immer mehr gegen Zuwanderer ab, die in den Augen vieler, vom Populismus erfasster EU-Einheimischer bestehenden wirtschaftlichen und gesellschaftlichen Problemen weitere hinzufügen. Nicht so Arkadij. Er steht über all dem. „Krassotá...!“, meint er. Es sei reine „Schönheit“, die er sieht, an den Klippen zwischen Lagos und Sagres: Komforthäuser mit Pool und Meerblick. Davon möchte der 42-jährige Russe welche kaufen, zwei oder drei, für sich und als Gästehaus und für die Tochter, die „bald volljährig ist und eine eigene Bleibe braucht. Soll ja unabhängig werden“. Papa Arkadij sieht seine Zukunft in der Algarve, für Wohnen und „Bizness“. Er gehört damit zu dem Immigrantenkreis, den Portugals Regierung umwirbt: In diesem Monat tritt ein Gesetz in Kraft, dass Bürgern aus Drittländern eine Dauer-Aufenthalts-

Dem Vernehmen nach warten viele Gutbetuchte aus arabischen Ländern, Asien und Südamerika auf die monetäre Lösung der Bremse, die das Schengen-Abkommen für Bürger aus Nicht-EU-Ländern darstellt. Statt Greencard für Wissens-Import nun Greencard für die Kapitaleinlage. Zypern und zentral- und südamerikanische Länder haben es vorgemacht. Dabei, so verspricht die Regierung, werde natürlich „geprüft, ob die Bewerber den Anforderungen an ein Zusammenleben in unserer Gesellschaft entsprechen“. Und das Wirtschafts-Ministerium nimmt den Kandidaten den Gang zum Ausländeramt SEF ab. Zahlungskräftige Neubürger seien dann „wie wir zu Zeiten der Entdecker, als wir neue Handelswege eröffneten und eroberten“, schwärmt Luís Lima, Präsident des Maklerbundes APEMIP. Er freut sich auf einen Aufschwung am Immobilienmarkt, während die Außenhandelsagentur AICEP in der Initiative einen weiteren Mosaikstein zum Bild Portugals als Investitions-Standort sieht: Seit dem Regierungswechsel 2011 haben sich die ausländischen Direktinvestitionen im Land gegenüber 2010 auf 7,4 Milliarden Euro nahezu vervierfacht. Sie kamen vor allem aus den Niederlanden, Spanien, Frankreich, Großbritannien und Deutschland.

he financial crisis in the EU also affects the lives of migrants. The German Federal Agency for Civic Education discovered in a study that xenophobic attacks are significantly on the rise in financially pressured Greece. The immigration and integration policies of France’s new president François Hollande are not as liberal as many people had hoped. In Italy one million foreigners have left their adopted home since the beginning of the economic crisis. The story is similar in Spain, where free healthcare for migrants without a residence permit has been withdrawn since September. Many immigrants to Portugal are returning home, while others are moving elsewhere, to EU countries with a more promising labour market. Foreign workers are important for economic growth, yet countries are increasingly sealing themselves off from immigrants, as these add further to existing economic and social problems in the eyes of many native EU citizens, seized by populism. Not so Arcadij, who claims to be above all that “Krassotá...!” What he sees on the cliffs between Lagos and Sagres is pure “beauty”: comfortable

The 42-year-old Russian wants to buy some of these, two or three for himself and as a guesthouse, and for his daughter, who “will soon come of age and needs her own pad. She needs her independence, after all.” Daddy Arkadij sees his future in the Algarve, as a place to live and for “Bizness”. This makes him a member of the immigrant class that the Portuguese government is wooing: this month, a law will come into effect, which offers citizens of non EU states a permanent residence permit if they invest at least half a million Euros or create at least thirty jobs, jobs that must be guaranteed for five years. For citizens from non EU nations the Schengen agreement represents a monetary brake, with many affluent people from Arab countries, Asia and South America allegedly awaiting its release. Instead of a green card for importing expertise and knowhow there is now the green card for contributing capital. Cyprus as well as Central and South American countries have led the way. Naturally, the government promises, “checks will be made as to whether the applicants meet the requirements for living together in our society.” And the Ministry of Trade and Commerce will remove any candidate’s need to visit the SEF Department for Immigration. Wealthy new citizens would then be “like us in the days of discoveries, when we opened and conquered new trade routes,”

He is looking forward to an upturn in the property market, while foreign trade agency AICEP regards the initiative as another piece in the puzzle that is Portugal’s image as an investment location. Since the change in government in 2011, foreign direct investments in the country have almost quadrupled to 7.4 billion Euros, compared to 2010. They came mainly from the Netherlands, Spain, France, Britain and Germany. Since then the development has stagnated. But if money is allowed to bring its owner, then cash flow should increase, because these new citizens are also well-heeled consumers. The influx of wealthy investors from non EU countries also has consequences that extend across Portugal’s borders. For those who live here, the gates open to the rest of Europe too. W
er im Urlaub oder auf Geschäftsreise mit einem in seinem Heimatland zugelassenen Fahrzeug in Portugal einen Verkehrsunfall erleidet, an dem ein portugiesisches Fahrzeug beteiligt ist, hat aufgrund europäischen Rechts die Möglichkeit, die Unfallfolgen zuhause zu regulieren. Aufgrund der Richtlinie 2000/26/EG vom 16.05.2000 (4. KH-Richtlinie) muss jeder KfzHaftpflichtversicherer in jedem Mitgliedsstaat der EU einen Regulierungsbeauftragten benennen – das ist meistens eine am Ort ansässige Haftpflichtversicherung –, welche die Schadensregulierung vornimmt. Auch ein eventuell erforderliches gerichtliches Verfahren kann nach der 5.KH-Richtlinie vom 12.06.2005 – bestätigt durch das Urteil vom EuGH vom 13.12.2007, C-463/06 – im Heimatland des Geschädigten durchgeführt werden. Diese Möglichkeiten vereinfachen die Schadensregulierung beträchtlich, insbesondere wegen des Wegfalls der Sprachbarrieren. sicherer in Hamburg. Allerdings ändert diese Zuständigkeit nichts daran, dass sich die Schadensersatzansprüche nach den in Portugal geltenden Rechtsvorschriften richten. Es ist deshalb sehr wichtig, vor Ort sämtliche Angaben über die Person des Unfallgegners und seiner Haftpflichtversicherung zu erhalten. Auch muss die Polizei benachrichtigt werden, da eine Unfallregulierung ohne polizeiliches Unfallprotokoll praktisch ausgeschlossen ist. Vorteilhaft ist die Verwendung des „Europäischen Unfallberichts“, damit man nichts vergisst. Nicht alle Schadenspositionen werden ersetzt. Reparaturkosten werden nur auf der Grundlage einer quittierten Werkstattrechnung erstattet; eine Abrechnung auf der Basis eines Sachverständigengutachtens erfolgt in der Regel nur bei Bagatellschäden. Das Gutachten sollte von einem portugiesischen Sachverständigen erstattet werden, da ausländische Gutachter nicht anerkannt werden. Die Kosten hierfür werden nur bezahlt, wenn die Versicherung den Gutachterauftrag erteilt oder bei wirtschaftlichem Totalschaden. Mietwagenkosten werden nur bezahlt, wenn die Anmietung eines Ersatzfahrzeuges aus beruflichen Gründen erforderlich ist. Es werden Übernachtungs-, Verpflegungs- und Rückreisekosten bezahlt, nicht aber eine Entschädigung wegen Nutzungsausfall, Urlaubsunterbrechung, Kosten der Finanzierung eines Ersatzfahrzeugs und Wertminderung. Unfallbedingte Auslagen werden nicht pauschal, sondern nur aufgrund vorliegender Belege erstattet. Ärztliche Behandlungskosten werden bezahlt, in aller Regel aber nur nach portugiesischen Sätzen. Das gilt auch für den grundsätzlich bestehenden Schmerzensgeldanspruch, der in Portugal geringer ist, als in anderen europäischen Ländern. Verdienstausfall wird auf Nachweis erstattet. Die für die Durchsetzung seiner Rechte erforderlichen Rechtsanwaltskosten trägt der Geschädigte selbst. Es empfiehlt sich deshalb der Abschluss einer Rechtsschutzversicherung, da anwaltliche Beratung in Fällen von Auslandsschäden von Nutzen ist, damit man wenigstens die – gemessen zum Beispiel am deutschen Recht – ohnehin geringeren Ansprüchen wenigstens vollständig durchsetzen kann. or drivers who have a traffic accident on holiday or on a business trip in a vehicle registered in their home country and involving a Portuguese car, European law offers the possibility to deal with the consequences of this accident at home. Under Directive 2000/26/EC dated 05.16.2000 (4th vehicle insurance directive), every motor vehicle
liability insurer has to appoint a settlement representative in every Member State of the EU - this is usually a locally based insurer - who carries out the claim settlement. A judicial process, when necessary, can even be carried out in the home country of the victim according to the 5th vehicle insurance directive dated 12.06.2005 and brought into force by ECJ judgement C-463/06, dated 13.12.2007. These possibilities considerably simplify the claim settlement, especially with the elimination of language barriers. However, this competency does not alter the fact that the damages claims are based on legislation in force in Portugal. Hence it is vital that you obtain all information about the other party and their liability insurance when still at the crash site. You must also immediately notify the police, as an accident settlement without a police accident report is practically impossible. Using the “European Accident Report” has its advantages, and ensures you don’t forget anything important. Not all damage items will be replaced. Repair costs will only be reimbursed on the basis of a full garage invoice; a financial settlement on the basis of an expert opinion usually only applies in the event of minor damage. The report should be issued by a Portuguese expert, as foreign experts are not recognised. The costs for this will only be reimbursed if the insurer assigns the expert opinion or in the event of a write-off. Car rental fees are only paid for if the rental of a replacement vehicle is necessary for employment purposes. Overnight accommodation, meals and return travel expenses will be paid, but no compensation will be given for loss of use, interruption of the holiday, the cost of financing a replacement car or decrease in value. Accident related expenses will not be reimbursed in a lump-sum, but only based on receipts/invoices presented. Medical treatment costs are paid, but usually only at Portuguese rates. This also applies to the any compensation for pain and suffering, which is however lower in Portugal than in other European countries. Loss of earnings will be refunded upon proof. Any legal fees necessary for the enforcement of the victim’s rights are paid for by the victims themselves. It is therefore advisable to take out legal expenses insurance as legal advice is beneficial in cases of foreign claims to at least fully enforce the claims, which are already lower - compared to German law for example.
