Algarve Vida feiert ihren ersten Geburtstag, und das lässt uns auf ereignisreiche 12 Monate zurück und mit Vorfreude in die Zukunft blicken. Wir haben uns zwar einen neuen Namen gegeben und wurden zweisprachig, aber im Grunde sind wir immer noch ganz die Alten – verliebt in diese wunderbare Region und glücklich über das Privileg, diese in ihren vielen Facetten präsentieren zu dürfen. In diesem Monat konzentrieren wir uns auf eine Facette, die an der Algarve ganz besonders brilliert – Golf. Wir berichten über die jüngsten Portugal Masters, führen ein Interview mit Portugals Nr. 1, Ricardo Santos, der auf unserer Modestrecke übrigens eine ebenso gute Figur macht wie auf dem Platz, und unsere Serie über die besten Golfplätze der Algarve bringt uns dieses Mal an die Ostalgarve. Helfer ohne Grenzen Nach den verheerenden Waldbränden im vergangenen Juli in der Ostalgarve haben sich die Menschen in der Region rasch zusammengefunden, um den Opfern des Feuers zu helfen. Ein paar junge Leute nutzten dazu die sozialen Netzwerke und eine Gruppe unter ihnen, „Voluntariado no Algarve“ ist in den vergangenen drei Monaten zu einer regionalen Institution geworden, deren Betätigungsfeld längst mehr als die Assistenz der Waldbrandopfer umfasst: Auf etwa 640 Mitglieder angewachsen, koodinieren sie Hilferufe und -angebote, Helfer und Ideen und werden inzwischen auch zum Ansprechpartner für Anliegen aus anderen Landesteilen. Help through the Internet After the devastating forest fires in the Eastern Algarve this July, the people in the region have quickly come together in order to help the victims of the fire. Some young people took to the social networks and one group amongst them, “Voluntariado no Algarve” has become a regional institution in the past three months, whose field of activity now includes much more than helping forest fire victims: it has grown to about 640 members, coordinating cries and offers for help, helpers and ideas, and has meanwhile also become a contact for requests from other parts of the country. Ausgestellt und vorgestellt BLiP, die Messe für das bessere Leben in Portugal zog am ersten OktoberWochenende neugierige und interessierte Messebesucher und Geschäftsleute in die Portimão Arena. Zwar gab es weniger Messestände als in vergangenen Jahren, was im Vorfeld die Erwartungen angesichts schwieriger Zeiten für Wirtschaft und Handel gedämpft hatte, doch am Ende waren alle zufrieden mit rund 5.000 Besuchern. Für einige Aussteller war es „die beste BLiP, die wir je hatten“. Ein erfreuliches Zeichen für die Zukunft setzten Teilnehmer, die zum ersten Mal dabei waren; darunter Unternehmen aus dem „grünen“ Bereich mit E-Bikes und Elektroautos und umweltfreundlich rauchlosen Grillanlagen.

Exhibited and presented BLIP, the trade fair for better living in Portugal attracted curious and interested visitors and businessmen to the Portimão Arena on the first weekend in October. Although there were fewer stands than in previous years, which had dampened expectations in the face of difficult times for the economy and for trade prior to the event, in the end everyone was happy with some 5,000 visitors. For some exhibitors it was “the best BLIP, we’ve ever had”. An encouraging sign for the future was given by first-time participants, including “green” companies with electric bikes and electric cars as well as environmentally friendly smokeless grills.

m Oktober fanden auf dem Oceânico Victoria Golfplatz in Vilamoura zum sechsten Mal in Folge die Portugal Masters, Portugals führende Golfveranstaltung und Teil der European Tour, statt. Der an jedem Spieltag spürbar lebhafte Nachmittagswind stellte die größte Herausforderung für die Spieler dar, und machte Hartnäckigeit sowie das gewisse Quäntchen Glück zur Voraussetzung für einen Sieg. Dieser gelang letztendlich dem charmant lächelnden Iren Shane Lowry, dessen drei erste gute Runden durch sein ausgezeichnetes Spiel am letzten Spieltag nochmals übertroffen wurde. Ein Bogey am ersten Loch war zwar kein verheissungsvoller Start für Lowry an diesem stürmischen Sonntag, doch diesem folgte ein Birdie am 2. Loch, und ein grandioser Eagle am 11. Loch katalputierte den Iren dann auf die Zielgerade zum Sieg und einem Preisgeld von €375,000. Nach Beendigung seiner Runde mit 5 unter Par folgten ein paar bange Momente des Wartens, bis Ross Fisher (England) und Bernd Wiesberger (Österreich) auch ihr abschließendes 18. Loch spielten. Mit seinem letzten Putt wollte Fisher ein Playoff erzwingen, doch sein Ball glitt nur auf nervenaufreibende Weise am Lochrand entlang, bevor er dann doch vorbeischoss, und somit den Iren zum unmittelbaren Gewinner machte. Fisher wurde 2. Sieger und erhielt einen Scheck über €250.000, während der ehemalige US Open Sieger Michael Campbell aus Neuseeland auf den dritten Platz kam. Wiesberger, der führende Spieler nach der dritten Runde, landete auf dem vierten Platz. Portugals Hoffnungsträger war Lokalmatador Ricardo Santos (siehe Interview S. 24). Leider konnte Santos seinen Heimvorteil nicht voll auspielen, eine glanzlose erste Runde endete mit 1 über Par, ebenso wie seine dritte Runde, so dass er am letzten Spieltag eine Menge Überzeugungsarbeit zu leisten hatte, was er dann auch tat: Portugals einzigem Pro bei der European Tour gelangen sieben Birdies – damit gehörte seine Runde zu den besten des Tages – und er schoss gleich 39 Plätze auf der Rangliste nach oben, auf den 16. Platz – ein neuer portugiesischer Rekord bei dieser Veranstaltung. Andrew Lang

or the sixth successive year, Oceânico Victoria course in Vilamoura, welcomed the Portugal Masters, the country’s leading golf event and part of the European Tour. The brisk afternoon wind, felt on every day of the tournament, proved the greatest challenge for players, ensuring that dogged perseverance and a bit of luck would decide the winner. This came in the smiling form of Ireland’s Shane Lowry, whose respectable first three rounds were topped by a final day of excellent play. The blustery Sunday didn’t start too well for Lowry, with a shot dropped on the first hole. This was soon Abschlag am 1. Loch Tee on the 1st hole rectified with a birdie on the 2nd, but it would be the incredible chipped-in eagle on the 11th that marked the beginning of his ascent to champion and the €375,000 prize money. were spearheaded by local boy Ricardo Santos (see our interLowry had to endure a nervous wait after finishing his final view pg 23). Er wird oft als sehr spielerfreundlicher Platz beschrieben, entworfen, um Spielern ihr Selbstvertrauen wiederzugeben, und sie gleichzeitig vor eine Vielzahl von Herausforderungen zu stellen. Die Geschichte des östlich von Tavira und nördlich des Küstenortes Cabanas gelegenen Platzes geht lange bis vor seine Eröffnung im Jahre 2000 zurück, bereits 1986 wurde der legendäre Golfplatz-Architekt Sir Henry Cotton um einen ersten Entwurf für den Platz gebeten. Mit der Entscheidung den Platz um eine malerische Kirche herum zu entwickeln und die vielen alten einheimischen Bäume zu erhalten, entstanden zugleich dessen Wahrzeichen. Die ausgewachsenen Korkeichen, Oliven- und Johannisbrotbäume, sowie die Aussicht auf die Hügel der Serra da Caldeirão gen Norden und der Blick auf den Atlantik im Süden machen den Platz äußerst attraktiv und sorgen beim Spieler für ein Gefühl großer landschaftlicher Nähe. Das sanft hügelige Gelände verleiht dem Spiel großen Anreiz, während die unberechenbaren Winde die ständige Anpassung des Spielers erfordern. Mit seinem leichten Linksknick sorgt das flache erste Loch für einen gelungenen Start in jede Runde, gefolgt von einem schwierigen Par -3, der den Spieler umgehend mit den Herausforderungen dieses Platzes bekanntmacht. Die ersten 9 Löcher setzen dieses Nehmen- und-Geben fort, belohnen mutige Spieler mit guten Möglichkeiten für Birdies am 3., 4. und 7. Loch und fordern sie am 5., 8. und 9. Loch mit strategischen Hindernissen in Form von Bäumen und Bunkern, welche die Grüns verteidi

Löcher beginnen mit einem stilvollen Auftakt – ein schwieriger Par -3 über zwei Seen, auf ein, von einem Bunker geschütztes Grün, gefolgt von einer weiteren Birdie Chance. Mit seinem Wassergraben auf beiden Seiten des Fairways stellt das 13. Loch den Spieler vor ein Dilemma: ein langer Abschlag über das 190 m Hindernis oder zur Sicherheit lieber zwei Schläge? Dem trügerischen Par -5 des 15. Lochs und seinen FairwayBunkern folgt das anspruchsvolle 16. Loch, der längste Par -4 auf dem Platz, wo Genauigkeit ein absolutes Muss und ein Par wohlverdient ist. Das malerische 17. Loch, mit dem vorne von einem Teich und an den Seiten durch Bunker geschützten Grün, ist eine anspruchsvolle Vorbereitung auf das letzte Loch, ein langer und Konzentration fordernder Par -5, der mit einem breiten Grün vor dem Clubhaus und der unvergesslichen Kirche endet. T
he first course to bring golf to the region’s long-forgotten eastern region, Benamor Golf is often described as a player-friendly course, one that seems to have been designed to restore player confidence, while nonetheless throwing up a host of challenges. Located east of the city of Tavira, just north of the coastal village of Cabanas, the history of the course goes beyond its 2000 opening, with legendary golf architect Sir Henry Cotton asked to come up with the initial design back in 1986. The decision to develop the course around a picturesque church and to retain the many ancient native trees provide Benamor with its most iconic features, on this attractive layout lined with mature cork oak, olive and carob trees, with views north to the hills of the Serra da Caldeirão and south to the Atlantic Ocean. The overall feel at Benamor is of being lost in the Algarve’s rolling hinterland, with the gently undulating terrain adding interest to the game, and the region’s unpredictable breezes constantly requiring player adjustment. The flat 1st, with its slight dogleg left, ensures a positive start to any round, with a tricky par-3 to follow introducing you to the course’s engaging challenges. The front nine continues this give-and-take attitude throughout, rewarding players who dare, with birdies a distinct possibility on the 3rd, 4th and 7th, and testing them, on the 5th, 8th and 9th, with strategic obstacles in the form of trees and bunkers, defending greens or interfering with well-meant drives. The back nine begins in style with a taxing par-3 over twin lakes, to a bunker protected green, followed by another birdie opportunity. With its water ditch straddling the fairway the 13th presents a dilemma: try the long-hit and pass the 190-m obstacle or two-shot for safety? The deceiving par-5 15th, with its fairway bunkers, is followed by the demanding 16th, the longest par-4 on the course, where accuracy is a must and a par well earned. The picturesque 17th, with its green protected on the front by a pond and on the sides by bunkers, provides a challenging build up to the final hole, a long and thought-provoking par-5, ending with a broad green before the clubhouse and the memorable church. S
eine ersten Golferfahrungen beschreibt Ricardo Santos als „nicht gerade einfach, aber wenigstens habe ich den Ball getroffen“. Seit dem er im Alter von neun Jahren in Vilamouras Golfschule erstmals einen Golfschläger in die Hand nahm hat sich jedoch viel getan. Als Nachwuchsspieler zeigte er an der Seite seines ältereren Bruders Hugo bereits großes Potential, belegte den zweiten Platz in der Junioren Nationalmeisterschaft 1995 und wurde mit 12 Jahren von einem Talentsucher des Portugiesischen Golfverbandes ausgewählt, um auswärts für das portugiesische Team zu spielen. Anfang 2006 wurde er Pro, repräsentierte Portugal bei den Weltmeisterschaften 2008 und 2011, legte eine erfolgreiche European Challenge Tour hin, gewann 2011 das Princess by Schüco Turnier in Schweden und beendete die Saison mit einem soliden vierten Platz, eine Leistung, die 2012 noch übertroffen wurde, als er im Januar zu den großen Jungs auf der European Tour stieß. In seinem ersten Jahr auf der Tour – als einziger portugiesischer Spieler – hat der Neuling mit einem Sieg bei den Madeira Golf Open im Mai
bereits seine Teilnahme für die Saison 2013 gesichert. Dennoch zeigt sich Ricardo Santos wie gewohnt bescheiden und erzählt von seiner Begeisterung, alle seine Helden persönlich kennenzulernen und auf so vielen verschiedenen großartigen Golfplätzen spielen zu können. Seine Freude kommt Ricardo Santos offenbar zugute – er schlägt sich wacker auf der Top Tour und überzeugte auch bei anderen Turnieren durch gute Leistungen, besonders bei der Omega Dubai Desert Classic, den Avantha Masters in Indien, den Volvo China Open und den Irish Open. Während er seinen Heimatplatz Oceânico Vilamoura betrachtet scheint Ricardo Santos seine Chancen bei den diesjährigen Portugal Masters, die auf eben diesem Platz stattfinden (siehe Bericht S.10), abzuschätzen. In the build-up to the Portugal Masters, the country’s major European Tour event, Algarve Vida meets up with Ricardo Santos, Portugal’s leading golfer at his home course of Oceânico Victoria, in Vilamoura.
D
escribing his first experience of golf as “not so simple, but I could hit the ball at least”, Ricardo Santos has gone a long way since first picking up a golf club at the Vilamoura Golf School at the age of nine. Coming through the ranks, along with his older brother Hugo, Ricardo showed early signs of great promise, placing second in the junior nationals in 1995 and being picked by a Portuguese Golf Federation scout at the age of 12 for the Portuguese team to play for the country abroad. Turning pro in early 2006, representing Portugal in the World Cup (2008 & 2011) and a successful European Challenge Tour career, winning the 2011
Princess by Schüco Tournament in Sweden and ending the season in a credible fourth place, was topped in 2012 when he joined the big boys in the European Tour in January. In this his rookie year on the tour (the only Portuguese player on it), Ricardo has already ensured a place in the 2013 season, with a maiden victory in May at the Madeira Golf Open. Talking about his arrival on the European Tour, Ricardo remains humble as ever, revealing how he was thrilled to meet all his heroes and to be able to play such a wide range of great courses. His excitement has been put to good use with Ricardo adjusting well to the top tour, doing well in several other tournaments, in particular at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic, the Avantha Masters in India, the Volvo China Open and the Irish Open. or etwas mehr als elf Jahren wettete Ruí Virgínia in einer kontemplativen Runde unter Freunden, dass man auch in der Algarve ausgezeichnete Weine produzieren kann, und was er beweisen wollte. Er begann quasi bei Null und ließ 2001 auf einem komplett gerodeten 15 Hektar großen Areal der familieneigenen Orangenplantage die ersten Rebstöcke pflanzen. Damals war sein Ratgeber der Önologe Luís Euclides Rodrigues. Mittlerweile verlässt er sich auf sein eigenes Know-how und die Ratschläge seiner Önologin Patrícia Piassab. Der innovative Winzer liebt gute Weine und informiert sich auch gerne direkt Vorort z.B. in Südfrankreich oder im Rioja, wie dort hochwertige Weine erzeugt werden. Sein Credo lautet: „Spezielle Weine für spezielle Leute zu erzeugen, wobei die Qualität immer an erster Stelle steht – und nicht der Profit.“ Blindverkostungen bei denen innerhalb von 20 Minuten sechs Weine „fachmännisch und objektiv“ bewertet werden, sind ihm ein Gräuel, und an Weinprämierungen und Medaillen hat er keinerlei Interesse. „Qualität verkauft

A
little over eleven years ago Rui Virgínia made a wager amongst friends that it was possible to produce excellent wines in the Algarve, and that he was willing to prove it. He started with almost nothing and had the first vines planted on a 15-acre area of cleared land on his family’s orange grove in 2001. Oenologist Luís Euclides Rodrigues was his advisor at the time. In the meantime he now relies on his own knowhow and the advice of his oenologist Patrícia Piassab. The innovative winemaker loves good wines and also likes to forage for information on how high quality wines are produced elsewhere, visiting sites in places such as Southern France or Rioja, in Spain in the process. His credo reads thus: “Make special wines for special people, with quality coming

an muss nicht gleich nach Bangkok, Chiang Mai oder Pattaya fliegen, um die exotischen Speisen Thailands zu genießen – ein Besuch des Restaurante Thai in Vilamoura ist unaufwendiger, umweltfreundlicher und mit Sicherheit preisgünstiger. Für Qualität und Authentizität sorgt hier die resolute Saengchan Phatri, die bereits in den Top-Hotels der Insel Phuket Urlauber aus aller Welt mit den Spezialitäten der thailändischen Küche verwöhnte. Seit sieben Jahren zaubern sie und ihr Team Klassiker wie Poh Pia Tod, Frühlingsrollen, Kaeng Khiao Wan, grünes Thai-Curry und Ped Ma Kham, gegrillte Entenbrust mit Tamarindensauce, Ingwer und schwarzen Pilzen auf die stilvoll eingedeckten Tische des Restaurants. Statt ihrer geliebten Phrik Khi Nu (Mäusekot-Chilis) verwendet die Küchenchefin die etwas größeren „himmelweisenden“ Chilis (Capsicum annuum), die portugiesische Missionare im 17. Ein Muss ist Saengchans köstliche Tom Yam Kung, die Nationalsuppe Thailands, eine kräftige Brühe mit Fischsoße, Schalotten, Zitronengras, Ingwer, Tamarinde, Chilis, Limettenund Korianderblättern und Camarões, Tiefseegarnelen, die sind qualitativ besser als die in Thailand üblichen Black Tiger Prawns aus ominösen Aquakulturen. Wer sich für Pla Lad Phrig entscheidet, dem wird frittierter Robalo, Wolfsbarsch mit einer süß-sauren Sauce und frischen Kräutern serviert. Dieses Gericht zeigt den chinesisch-laotischen Einfluss auf Aharn Phak Nuea, die nördliche Küche. Abschluss eines Thai-Menüs sind Süßspeisen wie Khao Niaow Ma Muang, Klebreis mit Mango und Kokosnusscreme, Khanom Fak Thong Kaeng Buat, Kürbis in Kokosnussmilch oder Kluay Buat Chee, Bananen auf Nonnenart (in Kokosmilch). o need to fly to Bangkok, Chiang Mai or Pattaya to enjoy Thailand’s exotic food - a visit to the Restaurante Thai in Vilamoura is less hassle, more environmentally friendly and certainly less expensive. Saengchan Phatri, who has already spoiled tourists from around the world with Thai specialities in top hotels on the island of Phuket, heads the kitchen and ensures quality and authenticity. She and her team have been conjuring up classics such as Poh Pia Tod, spring rolls, Kaeng Khiao Wan, Thai green curry and Ped Ma Kham, grilled duck breast with tamarind sauce, ginger and black mushrooms, and serving them on the stylishly decorated tables of the restaurant for seven years now. Instead of her beloved Phrik Khi Nu (bird’s eye chilli), the chef uses the slightly larger “sky pointing” chillies (Capsicum annuum), which Portuguese missionaries introduced to her home country in the 17th century and which are not quite as potent. And don’t worry: the Thai people haven’t used chopsticks since the beginning of the 19th century, rather a spoon and fork. You definitely have to try Saengchan’s delicious Tom Yam Kung, Thailand’s national soup, a strong broth with fish sauce, shallots, lemongrass, ginger, tamarind, chillies, lime and coriander leaves and deep sea shrimps, which are of a higher quality than the usual black tiger prawns in Thailand, sourced from ominous aquaculture. Those going for Pla Lad Phrig will be served sea bass with a sweet and sour sauce and fresh herbs. This dish shows the Chinese-Laotian influence on Aharn Phak Nuea, the northern cuisine. Sweet desserts such as Khao Niaow Ma Muang, sticky rice with mango and coconut cream, Khanom Fak Thong Kaeng Buat, pumpkin in coconut milk or Kluay Buat Chee, ‘nun style’ bananas (in coconut milk) nicely round off a Thai meal. Dorschfilet mit pochiertem Ei, Spinat & Zitronenbutter Für 4 Personen
Zutaten: 4 frische Dorschfilets, 600g Muscheln, 30ml Olivenöl, 60g gehackte Zwiebeln, 100g Butter, 1 Zitrone, 50ml Sahne, 1 EL gehackte Petersilie, 60 ml Weißwein, 1 makellose Tomate, 4 Landeier, 60ml Essig, 1 Tüte gewaschener Baby-Spinat, 4 geschälte, gewürfelte Kartoffeln, 1/2 TL Kurkuma Zubereitung: Kartoffeln in Kurkuma weich garen, abgießen und beiseite stellen. Olivenöl in Bratpfanne erhitzen, die Dorschfilets hineinlegen und auf einer Seite goldbraun anbraten. Vorsichtig wenden und die gehackten Zwiebeln hinzufügen. Muscheln dazu geben und mit Weißwein ablöschen. Deckel auflegen. Langsam garen bis der Dorsch ganz weiß ist und seine Transparenz verliert. Aus der Pfanne nehmen, die Flüssigkeit einköcheln, Tomaten-Concasse, Petersilie und Zitronensaft untermischen. Sahne hinzu geben und aufkochen lassen. Die kalte Butter würfeln und mit der heißen Sauce verquirlen. In einem Topf Wasser samt Essig zum Kochen bringen, Eier aufschlagen und ins kochende Wasser gleiten lassen. Kartoffeln kurz in kochendem Wasser erhitzen, abgießen, mit Baby-Spinat, Olivenöl und Gewürzen vermengen. Die Mischung auf einen Teller geben, das Dorschfilet darauflegen. Behutsam das Ei auf dem Filet platzieren, Muscheln hinzufügen, mit Sauce übergießen und sofort servieren
Fillet of cod, poached egg, spinach & lemon butter
Serves 4 people
Ingredients: 4 fresh, thick cod fillets, 600 g fresh clams, 30 ml olive oil, 60 g chopped onion, 100 g butter, 1 lemon, 50 ml cream, 1 tbsp chopped parsley, 1 perfect tomato, 60 ml white wine, 4 free range eggs, 60 ml vinegar, 1 bag washed baby spinach, 4 potatoes (peeled and cubed), ½ tsp turmeric Method: Simmer the cubed potatoes in the turmeric until tender, drain and keep until needed. Heat up a large sauté pan and add a little olive oil. Place in the cod fillets and fry until golden on one side. Turn carefully and add the chopped onion. Pour in the white wine and clams, cover with a lid. Cook until the cod is very white and loses its transparent quality. Remove from the pan, reduce the cooking liquid and add the tomato concasse (peeled, seeded and chopped), parsley and lemon juice. Add the cream and bring to the boil. Cut the cold butter into cubes and whisk into the sauce over the heat, without boiling. Bring a pot of water, with the vinegar, to the boil. At this point add the eggs to the water to make 4 perfectly poached ‘runny’ eggs. Heat up the potatoes in boiling water, drain and toss with the baby spinach with olive oil and seasoning. Place this mix on the plate, with the cod on top. Carefully arrange a poached egg on top and drizzle with the clams and the sauce, serve immediately and enjoy.

agen Sie doch einmal Ayamonte, A – ya – mon – te! Klingt das nicht schön? Die Griechen entdeckten einst dieses Fleckchen Erde an der Mündung des Rio Guadiana und nannten es Anapotaman (= über dem Fluss). Phönizier und Römer nutzten bereits den trägen Strom (Ostium Fluminis Anae), um Kupfer- und Eisenerze aus den Minen rund um Mertola zu transportieren. Man kann davon ausgehen, dass Ayamonte schon in dieser Zeit eine strategisch bedeutende Stellung einnahm. Als man 1263 den Guadiana als Grenze zwischen Portugal und Spanien festlegte, fiel die Ortschaft an Kastilien und gehörte später zur Grafschaft Niebla. 1664 verlieh König Philipp IV. dem Grenzort die Stadtrechte. Heute ist die Stadt am Fluss ein beliebtes Ausflugsziel, um für ein paar Stunden Flair, Kultur und spanische Lebensart zu genießen. Parken Sie ihr Fahrzeug am besten entlang der schattigen Avenida da República in Vila Real de Santo António und nehmen Sie die Fähre zum anderen Ufer (€ 1,70 pro Person). Die Überfahrt dauert etwa 15 Minuten. Vom Fähranleger ist man innerhalb weniger Minuten im Zentrum Ayamontes – an der Plaza de la Laguna mit ihren prächtigen Palmen, Springbrunnen und kunstvoll gefliesten Bänken. Die stattlichen Bürgerhäuser rund um den Platz stammen aus dem 15. und 16. Jahrhundert, erbaut von den Indianos, in den süd- und mittelamerikanischen Kolonien reich gewordene, heimgekehrte Spanier. Wer sich einen Überblick verschaffen möchte über das Labyrinth aus verwinkelten Gassen, verschachtelten kubischen Häusern, Läden, Kirchen, Bars und Cafés, sollte sich in die Oberstadt bewegen, zu den Resten eines römischen Kastells und zum Parador Nacional. Von hier hat man die beste Aussicht über Ayamonte, den Fluss und auf die Festungsanlagen von Castro Marim. In diesem Teil der Stadt versteckt sich auch eine Stierkampfarena. Verlaufen kann man sich nicht, denn irgendwie enden alle Straßen und Gassen entweder an den Kaianlagen, an der zentralen Plaza oder an dem kleinen Flusslauf, der den Yachthafen durchfließt, bevor er vom Guadiana aufgesogen wird.

Nicht unbedingt zu empfehlen sind die überwiegend auf Ausflügler und Touristen ausgerichteten Restaurants in der Fußgängerzone rund um die Markthalle. Besser und günstiger isst man in den typischen Bars und Tascas entlang der Avenida Vila Real de San Antonio, gegenüber dem Yachthafen, wo man unbedingt die andalusischen Spezialitäten probieren sollte. Die jahrhunderte alte Tradition der Siesta ist zwar seit dem 1. September 2012 offiziell von Spaniens Regierung abgeschafft, doch sollte man sich nicht unbedingt darauf verlassen und noch möglichst vor 14.00 Uhr ein paar ordentliche tapas bestellen, bevor das Küchenpersonal die Pfannen, Tiegel und Töpfe vom Herd nimmt. Eine andalusische Bar ist so gut wie ihre tapas. Unbedingt probieren sollte man boquerones fritos, frittierte Sardinen, tortilla de patatas, Omelett mit Kartoffeln, gazpacho andaluz, eine kalte Suppe aus pürierten Tomaten, Gurken, Olivenöl, Paprika, aufgelöstem Weißbrot

Vila real und Knoblauch, viel Knoblauch, der aus der lokalen Küche nicht wegzudenken ist. Andere Leckereien sind morcilla, Blutwurst, aceitunas, eingelegte Oliven oder sopa de picadillo, eine Suppe aus Kichererbsen, Kartoffeln, Ei, Reis und Schinken. Dazu passt am besten kühles Bier, ein Sherry (zum jamón serrano) oder ein Gläschen tinto (Rotwein).

ust say the word Ayamonte, A - ya - mon - te! Doesn’t that sound nice? The Greeks once discovered this lovely spot at the mouth of the Rio Guadiana and called it Anapotaman (above the river). Phoenicians and Romans once used this lazy river (ostium Fluminis Anae) to transport copper and iron ores from the mines around Mértola. We can assume that Ayamonte held a strategically important position back then. When the River Guadiana was determined as the border between Portugal and Spain in 1263, the Altstadtgasse town was granted to Castile and Alleyway in the old town was later part of the county of Niebla. In 1664 King Philip IV granted the border town its town charter. Nowadays the river city is a popular destination to enjoy a breath of Spanish style, culture and way of life for a few hours. It’s best to park your car along the shady Avenida da República in Vila Real de Santo António and to take the ferry to the other side (€1.70 per person). The crossing takes about 15 minutes. It only takes a few minutes to get from the ferry landing to the centre of Ayamonte, the Plaza de la Laguna, with its palm trees, fountains and ornately tiled benches. The grand homes around the square, dating back to the 15th and 16th century, were built by Indianos, Spaniards returned home from the colonies in South and Central America, where they had found their riches. Those wanting to get an overview of the maze of winding streets, nested cubic houses, shops, churches, bars and cafés, should visit the upper town, the remains of a Roman fort and the Parador Nacional

hotel. From here you have the best view over Ayamonte, the river and of the fortress complex of Castro Marim on the other side. This part of the city also hides a bullring. You cannot get lost, because somehow all streets and alleys end up either at the docks, at the central square, or at the small river that runs through the marina, before being absorbed by the Guadiana. The restaurants in the pedestrian area around the market hall mainly target day-trippers and tourists and are not really recommendable. You will eat better and cheaper in the typical bars and tabernas along the Avenida Vila Real de San Antonio, opposite the marina, where you should definitely try the Andalusian specialties. Despite the official abolishment of the centuries-old siesta tradition by Spain’s government on the 1st of September 2012 you shouldn’t necessarily rely on such changes and better order some decent tapas before the kitchen staff takes pans and pots off the hob at 2pm. An Andalusian bar is as good as their tapas. You should definitely try boquerones fritos, fried anchovies, tortilla de patatas, omelette with potatoes, gazpacho andaluz, a cold soup made from pureed tomatoes, cucumber, olive oil, paprika, white bread and garlic, lots of garlic, which is an indispensable part of the local cuisine. Other titbits are morcilla, black pudding, aceitunas, pickled olives or sopa de picadillo, a soup of chickpeas, potatoes, egg, rice and ham. This is ideally accompanied by a cold beer, a sherry (with the jamón serrano) or a glass of tinto (red wine).

Disney in Loulé In einer einzigartigen Ausstellung zeigt die Galerie ArtCatto Zeichentrick-Meisterwerke aus den Studios von Walt Disney und 20th Century Fox. Heute wechseln seltene Cels auf Auktionen für Millionen Dollars ihren Besitzer. In a unique exhibition, the ArtCatto gallery will show animation masterpieces by Walt Disney and 20th Century Fox Studios. ie Menschen leben immer länger und werden – vom AntiAging-Boom motiviert – auch immer eitler. Sich alt fühlen oder gar alt aussehen, möchten die wenigsten und wünschen sich weniger Falten, straffere Gesichtskonturen und jüngeres, besseres Aussehen. Dafür bedarf es keine Plastische Chirurgie. Ein Besuch bei einem auf kosmetische Medizin spezialisierten Facharzt schafft Aufklärung und Vertrauen und endet meistens mit einem minimal invasiven Eingriff – Injektionen von BOTOX oder Restylane, einem auf Hyaluronsäure basierenden Produkt für die ästhetische Injektionsbehandlung. Beide Produkte sind schon lange auf dem Markt und gehören zu den weltweit am häufigsten eingesetzten „Verjüngungstechniken“. BOTOX, Botulinumtoxin, ist ein natürliches Protein, das die zu den Muskeln führenden Nerven blockiert. Durch diese reduzierte Muskelaktivität verringern sich auch die Falten. Richtig dosiert, entspannt das Präparat die behandelten Stellen ohne „maskenhaft“ zu wirken. Es wird für Stirnfalten und Krähenfüßen rund um die Augen verwendet. Die Wirkung ist in den meisten Fällen nach 2 bis 5 Tagen sichtbar und hält 4 bis 6 Monate an. Einziger Nachteil: An den Einstichstellen treten Hautrötungen auf, die aber etwa eine Stunde nach der Behandlung verschwinden. Im Gegensatz zu BOTOX sieht man bei Anwendung von Restylane die Wirkung
sofort. Das Präparat wird seit 1996 millionenfach als Faltenfüller verwendet. Die darin enthaltene Hyaluronsäure ist eine Feuchtigkeit spendende Zuckerverbindung, die von Natur aus im Körper von Menschen und Säugetieren vorkommt. Ihre Hauptfunktion besteht darin, Wasser zu binden, und Platz zu schaffen zwischen den Zellen für den Stoffwechsel und die Haut vor der schädlichen Wirkung von freien Radikalen zu schützen. Mit Restylane lassen sich nicht nur Falten unterspritzen, sondern auch Korrekturen an Nase, Lippen, Ohrläppchen durchführen, sowie Gewebedefekte, Dekollete, Handrücken, Hals, Mundwinkelfalten à la Angela Merkel, Wangenund Augenbereiche auffüllen. Und noch etwas: Die sogenannten Schlauchbootlippen so mancher Stars und Sternchen basieren nicht etwa auf ärztliche Kunstfehler, sondern wurden von den Patienten ausdrücklich so verlangt. Wichtig: So unspektakulär die Behandlung mit BOTOX oder Restylane auch erscheint, sie sollte nur vom erfahrenen Facharzt durchgeführt werden – und nicht etwa von einem angelernten „Spezialisten“ eines Fittness- oder Schönheits-Studios. eople are living increasingly longer and – motivated by the antiaging boom – are also increasingly vain. Few want to feel or even look old, and most want fewer wrinkles, firmer facial contours and a more youthful, attractive appearance. This doesn’t require plastic surgery. A visit to a specialist in cosmetic medicine provides enlightenment and trust, and mostly ends in a minimally invasive procedure – an injection of BOTOX or Restylane, a product for the aesthetic injectable treatment based on hyaluronic acid. Both products have been on the market for a long time and belong to the world’s most used “rejuvenation techniques”. BOTOX, botulinum toxin, is a natural protein that blocks the nerves leading to the muscles. This reduced muscle activity also reduces wrinkles. Properly dosed this drug relaxes the

treated areas without making the face appear mask-like. It is used for lines on the forehead and crow’s feet around the eyes. Usually the effect becomes visible after two to five days and lasts about four to six months. The only downside: redness at the puncture sites; but this disappears about an hour after the treatment. Unlike BOTOX, Restylane shows an immediate effect. The drug has been used as a wrinkle filler millions of times since 1996. The hyaluronic acid it contains is a moisturising sugar compound that naturally occurs in the body of humans and mammals. Its main function is to bind water and to create space for metabolism between the cells and to protect the skin from the harmful effects of free radicals. Restylane can not only be injected beneath wrinkles, but is also used for correctional treatment of the nose, lips and
ear lobes as well as tissue defects, and to fill up the cleavage, the back of the hand, neck, wrinkles around the mouth, cheeks and eye areas. And another thing: the pumped up lips of some stars and starlets are not due to medical malpractice, but were expressly required to be like this by the patients. Important: as unspectacular as the treatment with BOTOX or Restylane may seem, it should only be performed by an experienced medical specialist - and not by a trained “specialist” from a fitness or beauty studio. mmer wenn es hieß, in einem Land platze eine Immobilienblase, kündigte sich ein Kollaps des Grundstücksmarktes an, ausgelöst durch den Zusammenbruch jahrelanger, deutlicher Überbewertung der Häuser und rasch wachsende Nachfrage, angeheizt durch leicht verfügbare Kredite. In Portugal geht die Nachfrage drastisch zurück, Darlehen gibt es nur unter erschwerten Bedingungen, dennoch drohe 2013 der Kollaps, meinen Beobachter. In der Folge neuer Verordnungen zur kommunalen Immobiliensteuer (Imposto Municipal sobre Imóveis; IMI) werden ländliche Terrains, alte und neue Mietshäuser, Eigentumswohnungen, Vivendas, leer stehende
Häuser und Ruinen – derzeit neu bewertet und bei etwa fünf Millionen Immobilien geht es nicht einfach um eine prozentuale Erhöhung der IMI, sondern um deren Vervielfachung. Zur Konsolidierung der Finanzen sollen die Gemeinden die höchsten erlaubten IMI-Sätze kassieren und ab 2013 rund zwei Milliarden Euro zusätzlich einnehmen. Der so genannte „Lage-Koeffizient“ wird ausschlaggebend, mit dem die Kommunen den Standtort der Immobilie taxieren. Dieser Faktor, mit dem die Bewertung der Eigenschaften jedes Hauses (Alter, Garage, Garten, Pool, Lift etc.) multipliziert wird, lag bisher bei 0,4 bis 2 und kann nun ein Maximum von 3,5 erreichen.

Auch für die Charakteristika selbst werden die Koeffizienten angehoben. Dabei kann die Anhebung auf drei Jahre bis 2015 verteilt erfolgen, um bestimmte Härtefälle zu mildern. Nach Abschluss der jeweiligen Neubewertung schicken die Finanzämter den Eigentümern ein Infoblatt mit den neuen Bewertungs-Koeffizienten. Welche Summen sich dahinter verbergen, wird frühestens deutlich, wenn mit Daten einer früheren Taxierung verglichen werden kann – oder wenn ab Februar die IMI-Bescheide in den Briefkästen landen. Maklerbund-Präsident Luís Lima fürchtet, ab dem kommenden Frühjahr werde der Markt unter einer deflationären Immobilienblase ächzen, voller Häuser, die unter Wert angeboten werden, weil ihre Besitzer die IMI nicht bezahlen können. Dies befördere auch nachgeordnete Probleme, so Lima: EinerQuinta Shopping Centre seits bleibe Besitzern vermieteter Häuser und Wohnungen kaum Geld für Renovierungen, andererseits würden Mieten für instand gesetzten Wohnraum steigen. As a result of new regulations on municipal property tax (Imposto Municipal sobre Imóveis; IMI) rural land, old and new apartment buildings, freehold apartments, houses, empty buildings and ruins – are currently being re-valued and for about five million homes, this is not simply about a percentage increase in IMI but about its multiplication. To aid fiscal consolidation municipalities are required to collect the highest allowed IMI rates and thus take in around an extra two billion Euros from 2013 onwards. The so-called “location coefficient”, with which the local authorities value the location of the property, will now be the deciding factor. This factor, with which the evaluation of the characteristics of each house (age, garage, garden, pool, lift, etc.) is multiplied, has been at 0.4 to 2 until now, but can now reach a maximum of 3.5. The coefficients for the characteristics themselves will be raised as well. The increase can be spread over three years up to 2015 in order to alleviate particularly difficult cases. Upon completion of the respective revaluation the finance offices will send owners an information leaflet with the new valuation coefficients. The amounts hiding behind this will at the earliest become clear when they can be compared with data from an earlier valuation - or when IMI notices land in mailboxes from February onwards. President of the Real Estate Agents Association Luís Lima fears that the market will suffer from a deflationary housing bubble from next spring onwards, overflowing with houses sold under value because their owners cannot afford to pay the IMI. This would also bring about secondary problems according to Lima: on the one hand owners of rented houses and apartments would have little money
left for renovations; on the other hand rental prices for renovated housing would increase. Lima advocates a single nationwide IMI rate of 0.35 percent, because the “idea to encourage competition for the influx of new residents between cities due to different tax levels has never existed for a lack of other incentives.” The municipalities themselves are not enthusiastic about the IMI increase either, because the benefit for the cities’ coffers will ultimately be very limited: the Ministry of Finance wants to retain five percent of the municipal tax. Justification: the Ministry would need the money, among other things, to pay for the reassessment. The Portuguese Cities Council ANMP hopes the Constitutional Court will declare this order unlawful as an “illegal seizure of municipal income”. Otherwise some communities could experience having less than ever before: the Algarve municipality of Alcoutim has announced it will not tax its already mostly socially underprivileged inhabitants with the IMI top rate in 2013. Neue FührerscheinRegelung A
b November werden die Grundlagen für den Führerschein-Erwerb verschärft, es gibt künftig mehr theoretische Fragen und weniger erlaubte Fehler bei der praktischen Prüfung. Am 2. Januar 2013 ändern sich die Richtlinien für die Gültigkeit von Führerscheinen (Dec.-Lei n.º 138/2012). Hintergrund ist die Vereinheitlichung EU-weit gültiger Zulassungs-Regelungen. Unter anderem muss ein Halter von Pkw oder Motorrad ab dem 30. Lebensjahr alle zehn Jahre einen neuen Führerschein beantragen, ab dem siebzigsten Lebensjahr alle zwei Jahre. Bereits ausgestellte Führerscheine behalten für Fahrer unter fünfzig Jahren ihre Gültigkeit bis zum Erreichen der bei Ausstellung der Fahrerlaubnis vorgesehenen Frist. Obligatorisch wird der Umtausch eines ausländischen Führerscheins spätestens, nachdem der Hauptwohnsitz in Portugal zwei Jahre besteht. Im Alter von dreißig und vierzig Jahren wird der Führerschein für die genannten Fahrzeug-Klassen automatisch erneuert. Im darüber liegenden Alter bleibt es bei der bereits bestehenden Pflicht zur Vorlage eines ärztlichen Attests. Die Anforderungen an die medizinische Unbedenklichkeit werden verschärft, vor

New driving license rules F
rom November, the requirements for obtaining a driving license will be tightened; in the future there will be more theory questions and less allowable mistakes in the practical test. On 02 January 2013, the rules for license validity (Dec.-Law n º 138/2012) will change. The background for this is the unification of licence regulations valid throughout the EU. Among other things, holders of a car or motorcycle have to apply for a new license every ten years from the age of 30, and every two years from the age of seventy. Licenses already issued keep their validity for drivers under fifty years of age, until the expiration date stated on the licence when issued. The conversion of a foreign license becomes mandatory at the latest after main residence in Portugal for two years. At the ages of thirty and forty the license for the named vehicle classes will be automatically renewed. For ages above this, the already existing obligation to provide a medical certificate remains. The requirements for medical safety will be tightened, especially regarding vision and some illnesses, such as epilepsy or diabetes. Furthermore, motorcycle licenses will be redefined and the minimum age for the acquisition of a driving licence will be raised for some motorbikes or linked to other conditions.
