Was bedeutet „Party machen“ eigentlich genau? Gute Laune, Musik, nette Gesellschaft, gutes Essen, ein angenehmer Ort – all das gehört dazu, aber im Grunde hat jeder seine eigene Vorstellung vom Feiern. Und wer meint, in Krisenzeiten seien Spektakel unangebracht, sollte einen Blick in Portugals Geschichte werfen: Die Tradition sommerlicher Feste geht auf die Zeit der Regentschaft von König D. João I. (1357 – 1433), dem Vater Heinrichs, des Seefahrers, zurück, als ein Erbfolgekrieg das Land zermürbte. Diese mittelalterliche Regierungskrise löste eine schwere wirtschaftliche Flaute und den finanziellen Niedergang des Landes aus. Als Ausweg lud der Regent ausländische Händler ein. Die boten ihre Waren mit viel Gaukelei und Musik auf Märkten (‚feiras‘) an: Das Volksfest war geboren und die Party geht bis heute weiter. What exactly do we mean by “partying”? Good atmosphere, music, good company, good food, a pleasant location – that all plays its part, but basically everyone has their own idea of what partying is. And anyone who thinks that spectacular events aren’t appropriate in times of crisis, should take a look at Portugal’s history: the tradition of summer parties dates back to the reign of King D. João I. (1357 – 1433), father of Henry the Navigator, when a war of succession was tearing the country apart. This medieval governmental crisis triggered a serious economic depression and the financial collapse of the country. As a solution, the regent invited foreign traders in. At the markets (‘feiras’) they offered their goods with juggling and music: the public festival was born and the party continues to this day. Algarve Vida presents tips, ideas and addresses for an August full of entertainment. We wish you a great time!

FacebookOffensive In Portugal haben sich mehr als vier Millionen User im sozialen Netzwerk Facebook eingetragen. Mit diesem vielversprechenden Marktanteil im Rücken will Facebook Portugal nun mit einer groß angelegten Kampagne die zwanzig größten Inserenten in Presse und Internet des Landes als Kunden gewinnen. Paulo Barreto, einst Chef von Google Portugal und inzwischen von der Suchmaschine zum Netzwerk gewechselt, will die Anzeigen im Newsfeed ausbauen und in kurzer Zeit die Werbeeinnahmen verdoppeln. „Wir möchten portugiesische Unternehmen unterstützen, ihre Marketingziele zu erreichen“, sagt Barreto. Facebook Portugal biete die Möglichkeit, Kundenkreise gezielter anzusprechen als über eine Annonce in der Presse. So erzielt der hiesige Ableger des USUnternehmens rund ein Drittel seiner Einnahmen über Kunden, die einen mobilen Facebook-Zugang nutzen. Er verspricht potenziellen Kunden eine fundierte Analyse, wo Reklame am sinnvollsten zu platzieren sei, wobei „die enorme Fixierung auf ‚Likes‘ nicht ausschlaggebend sein wird“. Facebook könne „ein Komplementärmedium zum Fernsehen werden“, so Barreto.

In Portugal, more than four million users have registered on the social network Facebook. With this promising market share to support it, Facebook Portugal now wants to launch a large-scale campaign to win over the twenty biggest advertisers in the country’s press and Internet as customers. Paulo Barreto, former head of Google Portugal, who has now switched over from the search engine to the network, is hoping to expand advertising in the news feed and in no time double the advertising revenue. “We want to help Portuguese companies reach their marketing targets” says Barreto. Facebook Portugal offers the chance to reach specific customer groups more effectively than with advertising in newspapers. This is how the local branch of the US company generates around a third of its income from customers who use a mobile access to Facebook. For potential customers, he promises a sound analysis on where advertising should be sensibly placed and where the “huge fixation upon ‘likes’ will not play the decisive role”. Facebook could become a “complementary medium to television”, says Barreto.

Fitness ist das Motto der Sportanlage ‚Área Desportiva da Praia da Rocha‘ an der Ostseite des Strandes. Bis zum 31. August ist die Anlage das Zentrum für Wassersport von Tauchen und Windsurfen über Segeln und Kanufahren bis hin zu Hydrogymnastik, aber auch für Betätigungen mit festem Boden unter den Füßen: Volley- und Basketball, Strandtennis und -Fußball, Yoga, Kihon (die Grundlage japanischer Kampfkünste), Fitdance, Flag Football und anderes mehr. Geschulte Trainer betreuen alle Sport-Aktivitäten. Erlebnishungrige erleben bei ‚Meeting the Flyboard‘ (bis 4.8.) viel Spaß. Ein Beachvolley-Turnier am 24. u. 25.8. bildet den krönenden Abschluss des Sportsommers am Strand von Praia da Rocha. Zuvor, vom 12. – 18.8. gibt es aber noch eine Aktionswoche zur Gesundheit mit Tests und Tipps, nicht nur für Sommertage. In diesem Zusammenhang ruft die Krebsliga der Algarve für den 17.8. an den Strand: Die Besucher sollen helfen, die Schleife, das Abzeichen der Organisation, zu formen – je mehr mitmachen, desto deutlicher ist das Zeichen der Solidarität der menschlichen Schleife.

Sport on the beach Fitness is the motto at the ‘Área Desportiva da Praia da Rocha’ sports facility on the east side of the beach. Up until 31st August, the facility is not only the centre for water sports ranging from diving, windsurfing, sailing and canoeing to hydro gymnastics, but also for activities carried out on solid ground: volleyball and basketball, beach tennis and beach football, yoga, Kihon (the basic elements of Japanese martial arts), fit-dance, flag football and lots more. All the sports activities are looked after by trained instructors. If you are looking for adventure, there’s a lot of fun to be had at ‘Meeting the Flyboard’ (until 4.8.). The culmination of the sporting summer on Praia da Rocha beach is a beach volleyball tournament on 24 and 25.8. But before that, from 12 – 18.8. there is also an action week on health and fitness with tests and tips, not only for the summer weeks. In connection with this, the Cancer League of the Algarve is calling for the 17.8. on the beach: visitors are asked to help to form the bow, the organisation’s badge, - the more who join in, the clearer will be the symbol of solidarity this human bow represents.

September auf jeder PSP-Wache und bei der Telecom kostenlose Sensoren-Armbänder aus allergiegetestetem, reißfestem Stoff unter der Bezeichnung „Estou aqui!“ (Hier bin ich), die die Ortung des Kindes ermöglichen. Auf der Wache oder im Internet (https://estouaqui.mai.gov.pt) müssen persönliche und Kontaktdaten und die Nummer des Armbändchens zur Aktivierung angegeben werden. Die Registrierung ist mit den Leitstellen der Euronotrufnummer 112 verbunden, sodass das Armband auch in anderen Ländern funktioniert.

Nicht für die Ewigkeit In ferner Zeit werde der Atlantik verschwunden sein, nicht nur vor Portugals Küste, wo Geoforscher 400 Kilometer südwestlich vom Festland eine Bruchzone entdeckt haben, die sozusagen den Meeresboden verschluckt. Amerika und Europa könnten vereint werden. Erdgeschichtlich hat sich der Atlantik allerdings bisher ausgedehnt. Segelte Kolumbus heute über den großen Teich, wäre sein Weg zwölf Meter länger als vor einem halben Jahrtausend. Nun sprechen Geologen von einer „Wende der Erdgeschichte“, in deren Verlauf der Atlantik verschwindet: Grund dafür ist eine gigantische Bruchzone, entstanden aus dem berstenden Meeresboden, der die Region zum seismisch sensiblen Gebiet macht. Entlang dieses Bruchs drängt Afrika nach Norden und schiebt den Ozeanboden vor sich her, der vor Südeuropa unter Begleitung von Erdbeben ins Erdinnere rutscht. Bei diesem Prozess schmilzt Gestein und Magma quillt aus dem Erdinneren. Dort könnten sich Vulkane auftürmen. Vor der Südküste Europas beginnt das Sterben des Atlantik. Doch Geologen rechnen in anderen Dimensionen: Die Entwicklung dauert Jahrmillionen. Badeurlaub am Algarvestrand ist für viele kommende Generationen also sicher.

Not for eternity In the distant future, the Atlantic will have disappeared, not only in front of the coast of Portugal, where, 400 kilometres south-west of the mainland, geoscientists have discovered a fracture zone which is, as it were, swallowing up the seabed. America and Europe could be united. However, in the history of the Earth, the Atlantic has always been spreading. If Columbus were to make his trans-Atlantic voyage today, he would have to sail an extra twelve metres compared to half a millennium ago. These days, geologists are speaking of a “turning point in the history of the Earth”, in the course of which, the Atlantic will disappear. The reason for this is a huge fracture zone created by the breaking up of the seabed which is making the region seismically active. Along this fracture, Africa is pressing northwards and pushing before it the ocean bed which is slipping into the Earth’s interior just in front of southern Europe to the accompaniment of earthquakes. In this process, rock melts and magma wells up from within the Earth. This could lead to volcanoes being formed there. It is off the south coast of Europe where the Atlantic is beginning to die. But geologists count in different time dimensions to us: This development will take millions of years. In the foreseeable future, holidays on the Algarve beaches will not be at any risk.

Algarve direkt Der Hotel- und Gaststättenverband der Algarve (AHETA) schaltet in den nächsten Tagen sein eigenes Buchungsportal im Internet frei. Unter www. algarvebooking.pt können Reisende dann zunächst rund zweihundert Hotels und Resorts direkt vergleichen und buchen, auf einer Seite, die sich „nicht darum kümmert, Touristen in die ganze Welt zu vermitteln, sondern nur darum, den Urlaubern die Region Algarve näher zu bringen“, so AHETAPräsident Elidérico Viegas. Bereits heute werden ein Fünftel aller Algarvereisen im Internet gebucht. Deshalb liege es nahe, die Region dort unmittelbar und unabhängig zu präsentieren und zusätzlich touristische Traditions-Angebote zu vermitteln, die auf den internationalen Urlaubsplattformen keinen Platz finden, sowie ausgiebige Zusatzinformationen über das Ferienziel und seine Umgebung. Die Webseite ist in sechs Sprachen konzipiert.

On the other hand, you could also take a trip yourself through this Portuguese winegrowing region: The newly set up website for wine culture enthusiasts, www.adegasdeportugal.pt, invites you to make a virtual journey through wine regions and vintages and, in future, will be presenting the wine tourism which is developing in Portugal in its own noble way. Wine tastings, shops, wine cellars and recommended accommodation all feature, along with some facts about the history and culture of these wine-growing regions. Wine therapy also gets a mention, as it has long since become common knowledge that the produce of the vine can also have a beneficial effect when applied externally. The virtual wine route is also intended to help with planning and preparing a real journey through Portugal’s wine landscape.

Algarve direct The Algarve Hotel and Restaurant Association (AHETA) will be opening up its own booking portal on the Internet in the coming days. At www.algarvebooking.pt, tourists will then be able to compare directly some two hundred hotels and resorts, to begin with, and book them, all on a website which “is not interested in reaching customers from all over the world, but only in bringing holidaymakers in closer contact with the Algarve region”, according to the President of AHETA, Elidérico Viegas. Already today, a fifth of all the trips to the Algarve are booked on the Internet. That’s why it was important for the region to have a direct and independent presence there itself and, in addition, provide traditional offers to tourists which do not appear on international platforms, along with extensive information about the holiday destination and its surroundings. The website has been set up in six languages.

PRISM & Co. - (wie) kann ich mich schützen? Vor 65 Jahren zeichnete George Orwell das pessimistische Zukunftsbild eines totalitären Überwachungsstaats - heute scheint sein Roman “1984” aktueller denn je

ass die elektronische Kommunikation der Bürger protokolliert wird, ist weder überraschend noch neu. Seitdem es Mobiltelefone gibt, speichern die Provider das Bewegungsprofil der Handys. Auch aus der Nutzung von EC-Automaten werden seit Jahrzehnten Bewegungsprofile erstellt. Dass man auch wäh rend der Internet-Nutzung – etwa bei einer Google-Suche – ständig geortet wird, ist hingegen weniger bekannt. Dafür dürfte jedem klar sein, dass Google jedes Zipperlein kennt, von der heimlichen Affäre weiß und überhaupt alle Ihre bekannten und weniger bekannten Interessen auswertet – zu Werbezwecken. Bisher galt die halbwegs beruhigende Annahme: „Es existieren zwar diverse Profile von mir, aber an verschiedenen Orten, die nicht verknüpft sind.” Inzwischen kann davon ausgegangen werden, dass diese Annahme falsch ist. Die bisherige Berichterstattung über das Späh programm PRISM des ameri kanischen Militärnachrichtendienstes NSA lässt den Schluss zu, dass Einzelprofile durchaus zusammengefügt werden können – etwa Ihre Nutzung von Google Mail, Skype, Vodafone und Barclays, nur um ein Beispiel zu nennen. Tatsächlich soll ein Großteil des gesamten Internetverkehrs zwischengespeichert und analysiert werden. Der gläserne Bürger ist Realität geworden. Diese Tatsache muss Unbehagen auslösen. Die Privatsphäre Ihrer Familie etwa sollte heilig sein und nicht für ständige elektronische Rasterfahndungen herhalten. Gibt es also einen Schutz, eine technische Möglichkeit, sich vor der totalen Ausspähung zu schützen? Praktisch nein. Selbst wenn Sie Ihre Internet-Kommunikation – Emails und Dateien – verschlüsseln, bleiben das „wer, wann, wo, mit wem und wie oft” (sog. Metadaten) weiterhin analysierbar. Natürlich gibt es noch ausgefeiltere technische Möglichkeiten, um der Online-Über-

wachung zu entgehen. Diese werden vermutlich genau von den Personen genutzt, deren Treiben als Rechtfertigung für die Totalüberwachung dient (und die damit ad absurdum geführt wird). Der Schutz unserer Privatsphäre kann letztlich nur durch die Politik gewährleistet werden. Unterstützen Sie bei den nächsten Wahlen, selbst bei den Kommunalwahlen in Portugal, die Partei, die sich für Ihre Persönlichkeitsrechte einsetzen will. Sprechen Sie mit Politikern, fordern Sie Unterstützung. Vor allem aber sollten wir selbst sensibler im Umgang mit unseren persönlichen Daten werden, nicht nur auf Facebook. Privates sollte privat bleiben – der Schutz vor Überwachung beginnt im Kopf. Viele Menschen gewähren selbst der überflüssigsten App für das Smartphone Zugriff auf ihre Kontakte, ihre Verbindungsdaten, ihre Position etc. – bloß um ein kostenloses Spiel zu installieren. Hier ist ein radikales Umdenken erforderlich. Fragen Sie sich einmal, ob Sie einem fremden Mitarbeiter des Elektronikmarkts im Tausch für ein kleines Computerspiel erlauben würden, Ihr Adressbuch mit sämtlichen Kontakten Ihrer Freunde zu kopieren, einen GPSSender an Ihrem Auto anzubringen und zukünftig jedes Ihrer Telefonate gemeldet zu bekommen. Wahrscheinlich nicht.

he fact that citizens’ electronic communications are being recorded is neither surprising nor new. Since we have had mobile phones, providers have been storing their movement profiles. Movement profiles have also been kept for decades based on the use of EC cash machines. The fact that, even when you are using the Internet, your movements are also constantly being tracked – via Google search for example – is less well-known. But we should all realise that Google knows about our every little ache and pain, it knows about that secret affair and evaluates all our known, and lesser known, interests – all for advertising purposes. Up to now, we have gone under the semi-comforting assumption: “there may be various profiles about me, but at different places none of which are linked”.

In the meantime, we have to conclude that this assumption is false. The current coverage via the American military NSA’s PRISM surveillance programme would suggest that individual profiles can indeed be combined – say, your use of Google mail, Skype, Vodafone and Barclays, just to give one example. In fact, it is said that a huge part of the total Internet traffic is temporarily stored and analysed. The transparent citizen has become reality. This fact must make us feel uneasy. For example, your family’s privacy should remain sacred and not be subject to electronic dragnet investigations. So, is there any protection, any technical way to protect ourselves from total spying? In practical terms, no. Even if you encrypt your Internet communication – emails and files – the “who, when, where, who with and how often” (so-called metadata) can still be analysed. Of course, there are more sophisticated technical methods to avoid online surveillance. And these are probably used just by those people whose actions are cited as the actual justification for the total surveillance in the first place (thus reducing it to an absurdity). Ultimately, the protection of our privacy can only be guaranteed by government policy. At the next election, even

Talk to the politicians, demand support. Above all, we should start being more sensitive ourselves in how we deal with our personal data, not only in Facebook. What is private should remain private – protection from surveillance begins in your head. Many people allow even the most unnecessary app for their smartphones to have access to their contacts, their connection data, their location, etc. – just to install some free game or other. It is here that we need to radically rethink our behaviour. Just ask yourself whether you would really allow some random employee from the electronic market to copy your address book, with all its contacts to your friends, to install a GPS transmitter in your car and to be informed of all your future phone calls, in exchange for a little computer game. August, der Höhepunkt des Sommers. Dank der Touristen ist die Algarve in diesem Monat doppelt so dicht besiedelt wie zu anderen Jahreszeiten. Doch der Rest des Landes versinkt keineswegs im Sommerhitze-Schlummer. Traditionell und sehr fröhlich geht’s zu beim „Festival Andanças“ in Castelo de Vide, das sich vom 19. – 25.8. nicht nur portugiesischer Musik und Folklore widmet. In den letzten Jahren entdecken junge Leute in ganz Europa die alten Klänge wieder und präsentieren sie nun aufgefrischt als hochwertige Unterhaltung. Dafür sorgen musikalische Gäste vom Balkan über das Mittelmeer bis Skandinavien (www.andancas.net). There‘ll be a traditional and happy mood at the ‘Festival Andanças’ in Castelo de Vide, from 19. – 25.8. which is dedicated to much more than Portuguese music and folklore. In recent years, young people all over Europe have rediscovered the old sounds and are now presenting them afresh as high-quality entertainment. „Out Jazz“ holt die Töne auf die Straße: Vom 2.8. – 29.9. spielen Ensembles freitags und sonntags in Lissabonner Parks und Plätzen und machen den Tagesausklang zum Happening für Passanten (www.ncs.pt/outjazz-programa.php). ‘Out Jazz‘ brings the melodies out onto the streets: From 2.8. – 29.9. there are ensembles playing in Lisbon parks and squares on Fridays and Sundays and they turn the end of the day into a happening for passers by (www.ncs.pt/outjazz-programa.php).

Vom 29. – 31.8. findet das „Festival do Crato“ bei Portalegre statt, das einmal als Jahrmarkt für Folklore und Kunsthandwerk begann und inzwischen berühmt ist für die Musikshows, zu denen dieses Mal die Briten Skunk Anansie, die portugiesische Kultband GNR, die Klezmer-Formation Melech Mechaya und viele andere anreisen (www.facebook.com/FestivaldoCrato). Alternativ geht’s zu beim „Freedom Festival“ in Elvas. Vom 13. – 18.8. lädt der Ort Vila Fernando Besucher in die „vierte Dimension“ ein, zu musikalischen Experimenten, psychedelischer Musik und rund einhundert Gruppen und Sängern aus der ganzen Welt (http://freedom-festival.eu). Alternatively, it really gets serious at the ‘Freedom Festival’ in Elvas. From 13. – 18.8. Vila Fernando invites its visitors into the “fourth dimension, to musical experiments, psychedelic music and around a hundred groups and singers from all over the world (http://freedom-festival.eu).

Der Name „Entremuralhas“ verrät, dass dieses Party-Event nicht auf der grünen Wiese stattfindet: Die trutzigen Mauern des Castelo de Leiria heißen vom 23. – 25.8. alle Anhänger des Gothic Rock willkommen (fadeinaacultural.com/entremuralhas-2/ entremuralhas-2013). The name ‘Entremuralhas’ already betrays the fact that this party event does not take place on a green meadow: From 23. – 25.8. the defiant walls of the Castelo de Leiria welcome all the fans of Gothic Rock (fadeinaacultural.com/ entremuralhas-2/entremuralhas-2013).

Lissabon wird im August traditionell zur Hauptstadt des Jazz. Vom 2. – 11.8. gibt es „Jazz em Agosto“ in der Gulbenkian-Stiftung. Das Musikfest feiert sein 30. Jubiläum und ist längst ein international bekanntes Highlight für Jazzfans. John Zorn, Pharoah Sanders und Anthony Braxton, die portugiesische Sängerin Maria João und der Improvisationsmusiker Peter Evans gehören zu den Stars der Szene. Doch das Fest bietet auch immer eine Bühne für junge Jazz-Musiker, diesmal aus der vitalen skandinavischen Szene (tägl. ab 21.30 h; www.musica.gulbenkian.pt/jazz). Traditionally in August, Lisbon becomes the capital of Jazz. From 2. – 11.8. the Gulbenkian foundation puts on ‘Jazz em Agosto’. Das „Populos Music Festival“ vom 1. – 3.8. ist ein Novum und wendet sich in erster Linie an junges Publikum (www.ccc.com.pt). Caldas da Rainha, the centuries old health resort of the Portuguese kings, invites you to some hot party nights with DJs, pop, new folk, rock and hip hop. The ‘Populos Music Festival’ from 1. – 3.8. is new and is aimed first and foremost at young people (www.ccc.com.pt).

Erfrischend abwechslungsreich ist das Angebot von „Refresh“, einem Musikevent mit rund dreißig jungen Gruppen, die vom 1. – 4.8. in der Nähe der Stadt Oliveira do Hospital ein Festival mit Nachhaltigkeits-Anspruch veranstalten, das neben der Musik auch eine grüne Note hat (www.refreshfestival.net). What ‘Refresh’ offers is refreshingly varied; a music event with around thirty young groups who will be putting on a festival near the town of Oliveira do Hospital, from 1. – 4.8. and it has a touch of sustainability about it, mixing green with the music (www.refreshfestival.net).

Um Heavy Metal dreht sich alles beim „Vagos Open Air“ am 9. u. 10.8. Die Quinta do Ega bei Aveiro beherbergt die fünfte Ausgabe des europaweit populären Dezibel-Event (www.vagosopenair.eu). At the ‘Vagos Open Air’ it’s all about Heavy Metal, on 9. and 10.8. The Quinta do Ega at Aveiro hosts the fifth occasion of this high-decibel event which is popular all over Europe (www.vagosopenair.eu).

Ruhiger, aber sehr reizvoll, präsentiert sich das Festival portugiesischer Traditionsmusik beim „Ciclo de Fado das Aldeias do Xisto“ vom 2.8. – 4.10. vor einer der schönsten und ungewöhnlichsten Panoramen Portugals: Die historischen Schieferdörfer südwestlich von Coimbra zwischen den Flüssen Modego und Zêzere mit ihren kleinen, verwinkelten Gäßchen und Häusern geben dem Fadofest einen feierlichen Rahmen (www.aldeiasdoxisto.pt/detalheagenda/4/5/42/6/05/3545). Calmer, but very fascinating, that’s how the Festival of Portuguese Traditional Music comes across at the ‘Ciclo de Fado das Aldeias do Xisto’ from 2.8. – 4.10. in front of one of Portugal‘s most beautiful and unusual panoramas: the historical schist villages of Coimbra between the Modego and Zêzere rivers with their small, twisted alleys and houses provide the Fado Festival with a festive framework (www.aldeiasdoxisto.pt/ detalheagenda/4/5/42/6/05/3545).

„Surf at Night“ heißt es in Ovar, das Festival vom 12. – 18.8. lädt zum Surfen auf einer Welle aus 56 Stunden Partymusik ein. Und weil das Event an der Praia de Cortegaça stattfindet, einem der bekanntesten Surfstrände Portugals, verbindet sich die Party mit dem Sport (www.facebook.com/surfatnight). ‘Surf at Night’ is the message in Ovar; the festival, from 12. – 18.8., invites you to surf on a wave of 56 hours of party music. Im Norden des Landes gibt es drei verlockende Angebote: Zunächst findet vom 2. – 4.8. in Sendim bei Bragança das „Festival Intercéltico“ statt. Ursprünglich als Revival der mirandesischen Sprache und der Kultur der Region an der spanischen Grenze entworfen, ist es heute eine Fundgrube für Musik mit keltiberischen und keltischen Wurzeln und wird vom Europäischen Forum der FolkFestivals als eines der Wichtigsten bezeichnet (www.intercelticosendim.com). Viana do Castelo beherbergt vom 8. – 10.8. das „Neo Pop Festival“. Schließlich gibt es vom 13. – 17.8. in Paredes de Coura ein seit 20 Jahren weithin bekanntes Sommerfestival, das den Namen der Stadt trägt. Am Strand des Rio Tabuão beherrscht Rockmusik die Szenerie und nicht nur die Zuschauer sind begeistert: Künstler haben Paredes de Coura als ihre Lieblings-Sommerbühne bei den Europe Festival Awards nominiert (www. paredesdecoura.com). Finally, from 13. – 17.8. in Paredes de Coura there is the summer festival, wellknown for over twenty years and which bears the name of the town. Es wurde nach der Nelkenrevolution von der Kommunistischen Partei als landesweites Polit-Event ins Leben gerufen, aber längst gehört es zu den prestigereichsten Festivals, nicht nur in Europa. Namhafte Künstler aller Musikrichtungen sehen es als Markstein in ihrer Karriere an, auf einer der zehn ‚Avante‘-Bühnen zu spielen (www.festadoavante.pcp.pt). Since May, the club Nau on the Praia Grande in Ferragudo has been operating its own water taxi. The trimaran operates a daily shuttle service from 9am to 12pm in the river mouth between Ferragudo, Praia Grande, the yacht harbour and Portimão, and transports customers over the water to the trendy restaurants. After you have eaten in one of these partner restaurants and bars, you get a discount voucher for the next ferry trip. The taxi holds 12 passengers, a tour costs between €6 and €8, children under 10 travel free. If you reserve in advance, the taxi service transports groups after midnight and for these there is also a group discount. This makes it ideal for groups of friends, large families or staff groups who want to ride the waves to their destination on the warm summer evenings.

Cocktail-Schirm Bastelanleitung Sie brauchen: Geschenkpapier, Schaschlickspieße, Doppelseitiges Klebeband, Schere, Heißkleber So geht´s: Zuerst schneiden Sie aus dem Geschenkpapier ein langes Rechteck aus (ca. 66 x 4 cm). Falten Sie das lange Rechteck zu einer Ziehharmonika, die Größe der Falten sollte ziemlich identisch sein. Versehen Sie die eine Außenkante der Ziehharmonika mit einem doppelseitigen Klebeband und kleben Sie beide Enden zusammen. Nun stülpen Sie das ZiehharmonikaRohr so um, dass das Muster des Geschenkpapiers zum Boden zeigt und ein runder Fächer entsteht. Versehen Sie die Mitte des umgedrehten Cocktail-Schirms mit einem Tupfer Heißkleber. Halten Sie anschließend den Cocktail-Schirm zusammen, bis der Kleber getrocknet ist, damit in der Mitte kein Loch entsteht. Zuletzt versehen Sie die Spitze des Holzspießes mit doppelseitigem Klebeband und befestigen diesen dann auf der Rückseite des Fächers. Cocktail umbrellas Step-by-step instructions You need: present wrapping paper, kebab sticks, twosided sticky tape, scissors, hot glue This is how you do it: first cut a long rectangle out of the wrapping paper (approx. 66 x 4 cm). Now fold the rectangle into a concertina shape, making sure the folds are more or less the same size. Put some two-sided sticky tape on the outer ends of the concertina and stick both ends together. Bend the concertina tube around so that the pattern on the wrapping paper points downwards and forms a round fan. Put a drop of hot glue in the middle of the inside-out cocktail umbrella. Then hold the cocktail umbrella together until the glue has dried so that there is no hole in the middle. Finally, put two-sided sticky tape around the top of the kebab stick and attach it to the back of the fan.

70er Party Die 70er Jahre sind für viele eine der prägnantesten Äras. Ob politisch, mit Willy Brands Kniefall in Warschau, der Watergate-Affäre und der Nelkenrevolution, ob kulturell mit unvergesslicher Musik aus der DiscoWelle oder revolutionären Filmen wie der Star Wars-Triologie und Der Pate sowie ganzen Kulturbewegungen wie die der Hippies. Höchste Zeit also, dieser einzigartigen Epoche Tribut zu zollen. Und wie ginge das besser als mit einer 70er Jahre Party? Wird man heute nach einer typischen 70er Jahre Party gefragt, fallen einem sofort Discokugel, Luftschlangen oder Lichterketten mit bunten Glühbirnen ein, die neben dem aufgebauten kalten Buffet im Partykeller ein Muss waren. Gegessen wurde in der Regel im Stehen, in der einen Hand den Teller, in der anderen Hand die Gabel, um die damals sehr beliebten Nudel- und Kartoffelsalate mit Minifrikadellen zu ver speisen. Gern wurden aber auch mit Spargel gefüllte Schinkenröllchen, der Käseigel, Fliegenpilz-Eier, Eiersalat, Krabbencocktail, Frikadellen, aufgespießte Cocktailwürstchen sowie halbe Eier mit Mayonaise oder Anchovis angeboten. Zu trinken gab es neben der selbstgemachten Bowle vor allem Cola, Fanta, Bier und Wein. Zwischendurch vergnügte man sich auch mit einem kleinen Jägermeister, Eierlikör oder Apfelkorn zu Salzstangen, Erdnussflipps und Wackelpudding in Himbeer- und Waldmeistergeschmack sowie Pumpernicker-Häppchen mit Frischkäse, in gestreifte Würfel geschnitten und mit einer Olive dekoriert. Dazu spielte der Plattenspieler oder Kassettenrekorder Hits von den Les Humphries, Queen, Marianne Rosenberg, Abba, Boney M, den Stones, Hot Chocolate und den Bee Gees, zu denen die Nächte durchgetanzt wurde. Also schmeißen Sie sich in grelle Farben und Glitzer, packen Sie Ihre höchsten Plateauschuhe aus und feiern Sie mit der “Puck die Stubenfliege”- Brille auf der Nase die 70er Jahre.

70th party For many, the 70s was one of the most imposing decades. Eating would usually be done standing up, in one hand a plate, in the other a fork to eat the then beloved noodle salads and potato salads along with mini meatballs. But also on offer were such things as rolled up ham filled with asparagus, cheese hedgehogs, toadstool eggs, egg salad, shrimp cocktail, meatballs, skewered cocktail sausages and half eggs with mayonnaise or anchovies. To drink there would be, as well as home made punch, mainly Cola, Fanta, beer and wine. In the meantime, you might enjoy a quick eggnog, with pretzel sticks, peanut flips and jelly with raspberry flavour, savoury bread with cream cheese cut in striped cubes and decorated with an olive. During all this, the record player or cassette recorder would be playing hits from Queen, Abba, Boney M, the Stones, Hot Chocolate and the Bee Gees, to dance the night away. So get yourself done up in wild colours and glitter, pack your highest platform shoes and, with your fly-eye sunglasses on your nose, pay homage to the 70s.

If you are over 16 and have your flip-flops and bathing cap with you, you can start your spa day with a refreshing swim in the indoor salt-water pool or the Jacuzzi with the prospect of a whole range of treatments still to come. The spa team is made up of experienced therapists, physiotherapists and homeopaths who have put together a very comprehensive selection of offers. Pedras Amarelas liegt in einer ruhigen privilegierten Lage am Ostende des langen Sandstrands in einer kleinen Bucht an den Dünen. Es war einer der ersten gastronomischen Betriebe am Strand von Galé, westlich von Albufeira, und hat sich von einer einst kleinen, einfachen Holzbaracke zu einem weitläufigen Restaurant mit internationalem Einfluss entwickelt. Zu den Spezialitäten gehören der frische, gegrillte Fisch der meist beim Gast am Tisch filetiert wird, sowie Muscheln und Schalentiere. Aber auch Tapas für den kleinen Hunger werden geboten, darunter kleine fritierte Tintenfische, Boquerones und Sardinenfilets, sowie eine Auswahl frischer Salate. Von der Terrasse genießt man die herrliche Sicht auf die Bucht und den Strand bis A.d. Pêra. Am Abend ist ein Besuch besonders empfehlenswert, denn im Licht der

Os Compotas; das sind der flippige Edgar Valente (Keyboard und Leadgesang), der höfliche João Aguiar (Gitarre), der coole Paulo Lourenço (Bass), der zurückhaltende Fabio Cantinho (Schlagzeug) und der temperamentvolle Tiago Vicente (Percussion) – normale junge Männer zwischen 22 und 28 Jahren, die vor 16 Monaten ihre Band gründeten und seitdem davon träumen, professionelle Musiker zu werden. Dafür haben sie die Algarve, in der sie aufgewachsen sind, zwischenzeitlich verlassen, um sich in Lissabon einem breiteren Publikum vorzustellen und an verschiedenen Projekten teilzunehmen. Eine Kostprobe kann man mit einer viereckigen Münze, genannt Xelb, erwerben, die man vorher gegen Euro eingetauscht hat. Der Mittelalterliche Jahrmarkt von Silves ist eine authentische Reise in die Vergangenheit, hin zu den Tagen, als die Stadt von portugiesischen Christen erobert und die maurischen Herrscher besiegt wurden. Während die Festlichkeiten hauptsächlich in den Straßen und Gassen stattfinden, sind auch eine Anzahl historischer Plätze einen Besuch wert, deren Öffnungszeiten sich mit den Jahrmarkt-Stunden decken. Die nachfolgenden Beschreibungen dienen als kleiner Reiseführer zu den wichtigsten Denkmälern, angefangen am Fluss: DIE ALTE BRÜCKE: Die Architektur dieser Brücke erscheint aufgrund des gradlinigen Designs des Brückendecks römischen Ursprungs, aber die Gelehrten stimmen dem Alter der Brücke nicht zu. Es wird stattdessen vermutet, dass sie jüngeren Datums ist und auf den Überresten einer alten römischen Brücke aufgebaut wurde. DER ISLAMISCHE BRUNNEN: Wenn man die Stadtmauern passiert hat und bergan durch Silves wandert, ist das Archäologische Museum ein obligatorischer Stopp. Es enthält nicht nur eine umfangreiche Kollektion von Artefakten, sondern zeigt als Hauptattraktion einen islamischen Brunnen. Dieser vollkommen erhaltene Brunnen wird von einer spiralförmigen Treppe umgeben, Zugang zum Brunnen bekommt man durch drei in den Stein gehauene Fenster. DIE KATHEDRALE: Wenn man das Museum verlässt und den steilen Straßen aufwärts folgt, ist es ein Leichtes, die Kathedrale von Silves auszumachen. gotischer Architektur entworfen, wurden Teile der Kathe drale durch mehrere Erdbeben, das letzte in 1775, zerstört. Die jüngsten Rekonstruktionen wurden im Barock- und Rokoko-Stil errichtet. DIE BURG: Wenn man den höchsten Punkt von Silves erreicht, umgeben die dunkelroten Stadtmauern die “al-qasbah”, arabisch für ummauerte Festung, oder in modernem portugiesisch: Alcaçova. Es gibt dort mehr zu sehen als nur den fantastischen Ausblick über die gesamte Stadt und das Arade-Tal, so z.B. die islamischen Ruinen, die innerhalb der Festung entdeckt wurden. The following words constitute a small guide to the most important monuments starting near the river: The Old Bridge: the architecture of this bridge appears to indicate an inspiration in Roman architecture due to the rectilinear design of the bridge deck. However, scholars do not agree that the bridge could be that old, and it´s more accepted today that the actual bridge could have been built on a more recent date, on top of the ruins of an older Roman bridge. The Islamic Well: Walking up the city, passing beyond the city walls the Archaeological Museum is an obligatory stop. It not only holds a vast collection of artifacts telling the history of the city, but the main attraction of the museum is an Islamic Well. This perfectly preserved well, is surrounded by a spiral staircase that goes around the outer walls of the structure allowing the access to the well itself through three stone built windows.

The Cathedral: Leaving the Museum and walking up the steep streets it will be easy to locate the Cathedral of Silves. One of the most interesting aspects of this building is that it is a testimony to the centuries that it passed through. Originally projected in a Gothic architecture, a succession of earthquakes, the last one in 1755, destroyed parts of the building that were reconstructed being that the last reconstructions to the building were in barroc/rococo style. The Castle: Reaching the highest point of the city, the dark red city walls enclose what the Arabs would call al-qasbah, which means, a walled fortification or in modern Portuguese, Alcaçova. There is more to see than the extraordinary view over all of the city and the valley where the Arade flows, like the Islamic ruins discovered inside the castle itself. But the main attraction of the Castle is hidden underground, descending into the ground, the visitor can access the Cisterna da Moura, a 10 meter high and 820 square meters of superficial area cistern, built, so that the fortification would have a notable surplus of water during a siege, a frequent scenario during the Christian conquest of the Algarve. Klangvoller Flughafen ANA Aeroportos, der Betreiber von Portugals Flughäfen, begrüßt und verabschiedet seine Fluggäste am Flughafen von Faro während der Sommermonate mit musikalischen Klängen. Die “Musica no Terminal” wurde mit drei thematischen Zyklen angekündigt und startete erstmals im Juli mit Jazz. Während des Monats August werden die Besucher jeden Freitag von 10 Uhr - 12 Uhr mit einem 30-minütigen Fusion-Konzert, einer Verschmelzung von Rock und Jazz, unterhalten; enden wird die Initiative im September mit Darbietungen von Künstlern mit unterschiedlichen Zupf instrumenten. Seitdem der Flughafenbetreiber im Dezember 2012 privatisiert wurde und an den französischen Baukonzern Vinci überging, machte er mit kleinen Aktionen, wie auch z.B. der Chefkoch-Woche im Mai, mehrmals auf sich aufmerksam.

It was announced that the “Musica no Terminal” would have three thematic cycles, starting with jazz in July. er Sommer ist da - Sonne, Meer, Strand und jede Menge Spaß sind angesagt. Dabei wird oft viel getrunken - und nicht immer nur Wasser. Alkoholische Getränke sind allenorten im Angebot, Cocktails locken mit verführerischen Namen wie „Sex On The Beach“. Wir genießen sie, aber leider ist uns nicht immer bewußt, wann das Maß voll ist. Gelegentlicher Alkoholkonsum stellt kein Problem dar; wenn jedoch zu viel und zu oft Alkohol getrunken wird, kann das böse Folgen haben. Im Sommer kommt es besonders häufig zu Unfällen aufgrund exzessiven Alkoholgenusses, vom typischen Kater mit Übelkeit, Erbrechen und Austrocknung ganz zu schweigen. Ein Trend, der sich zunehmend und vor allem unter jungen Menschen verbreitet, ist das sog. „Binge-drinking“. Dabei wird über einen kurzen Zeitraum hinweg übermäßig viel Alkohol konsumiert, ohne längere Ab-

stinenzpausen einzulegen. Dies kann zu einer Alkoholvergiftung führen. Eine erhöhte Aufnahme von Alkohol, besonders in Kombination mit anderen Substanzen wie etwa sog. “Partydrogen”, kann zu Unterkühlung, Erbrechen, Austrocknung, niedrigem Blutdruck und Blutzuckerspiegel, Verwirrung und schließlich sogar zum Koma führen. Dieses sog. “Komasaufen” führt immer wieder zu lebensbedrohlichen Situationen. Glücklicherweise treten solche Exzesse in der Algarve seltener als z.B. in Deutschland, den Niederlanden oder Großbritannien auf. Was versteht man unter „Verantwortungsvollem Trinken“? Das ist eine sehr individuelle Frage, aber die Ärzte haben einige Richtlinien parat: Frauen können bis zu zwei alkoholhaltige Getränkeeinheiten, Männer bis zu drei, älteren Menschen nur eine Einheit pro Tag zu sich nehmen. Diese Unterschiede haben mit der Leber zu tun. Das große Organ im rechten oberen Abdomen sorgt dafür, dass der Alkohol aus dem Blut entfernt wird. Wenn zu häufig viel Alkohol getrunken wird, geschieht dies zu Lasten der Leberfunktion. Ein Bluttest kann die Funktion der Leber messen. Neben physischen Effekten wirkt sich der Konsum von großen Mengen Alkohol auch auf die Psyche und auf das soziale Verhalten aus. Es kann zu Schlafstörungen, Reizbarkeit, Angstzuständen und Panikattacken kommen. Auch Zittern, übermäßiges Schwitzen und Darmprobleme können auftreten. Stellen Sie sich folgende Fragen: Ärgern Sie sich über Kommentare von Mitmenschen bezüglich Ihres Trinkverhaltens? Fühlen Sie sich jemals schuldig wegen Ihres Trinkverhalten? Trinken Sie jemals morgens, um Ihren Kater loszuwerden?

Abschließend muss man sich angesichts der Tatsache, dass übermäßiger Alkoholkonsum auch negative Auswirkungen auf die Libido haben kann, fragen, warum es überhaupt einen Cocktail Namens „Sex On The Beach” gibt.

ummer has arrived and everyone is enjoying it. Sun, sea, sand and lots of fun. There also will be drinking and not just water. Alcoholic drinks are available everywhere as well as cocktails with tempting names like “Sex On The Beach”. We enjoy it, regrettably not always in moderation. As the evening goes on, there is a chance we might drink too much. This doesn´t have to be a problem when it happens occasionally, but too often too much alcohol can have nasty consequences. In summer there are regular accidents due to the excessive drinking, as well as hangovers with nausea, vomiting and dehydration. Something that is becoming more and more common, especially among young people, is binge-drinking – drinking an excessive amount of alcohol in a short period of time not interspersed with abstinence. This can lead to alcohol poisoning: after an enormous intake of alcohol (combined with other substances, such as the so-called party drugs) this can lead to hypothermia, vomiting, dehydration, low blood pressure, low blood sugar, confusion and eventually coma. This so called binge drinking can lead to serious and sometimes life-threatening situations. Fortunately, the situation in the Algarve is nothing like sometimes shown on television programs but it does sometimes happen here. What is ‘responsible drinking’? That is very individual, but as doctors we do have some guidelines: women can drink up to two drinks per day, men up to 3 drinks a day, the elderly one drink per day. These differences have to do with the liver. This large organ, in the right upper abdomen, ensures that the alcohol is removed from the blood. If too much alcohol

is being consumed frequently, this will be at the expense of the function of the liver. A blood test can determine the liver function. In addition to the physical effects, the use of large amounts of alcohol affects the psychological and social functioning. You may experience difficulty sleeping, irritability and anxiety and panic attacks. Also trembling, excessive sweating and bowel symptoms can occur. Ask yourself the following questions: Do you get annoyed by people who make comments about your drinking habits? Do you ever feel guilty about your drinking habits? Do you ever drink in the morning to get rid of your hangover? If your answer to any of these questions is yes, chances are that alcohol is a problem for you. If so, talk to your GP. Help is available. If we take into account that excessive alcohol can also have a negative effects on the libido, ask yourselves why is the cocktail called ‘Sex On The Beach’ . Dr. med. Heino Folmer

Sein oder Nichtsein Mit mehr als vierzehn Millionen Übernachtungen im Jahr begrüßt die Algarve so viele Feriengäste wie keine andere Region in Portugal. Der Markt ist umkämpft

ie meisten Leser der Lokalzeitungen sahen zweimal hin, um die eigentliche Botschaft der Meldung zu begreifen: In den ersten elf Augusttagen werde Portimão „die Ikone der lokalen Gastronomie mit einem großen Volksfest zelebrieren“. Gemeint ist die Sardine und hinter der Ankündigung verbirgt sich in Wirklichkeit eine Absage, denn das ‚Festival da Sardinha‘, mit Kulinarik, Show, Musik und Kunstgewerbe, Jahrzehnte lang Attraktion für Sommernächte zwischen Lagos und Lagoa, findet gar nicht statt. Ersatzweise empfiehlt die Stadt den Gästen, die lokalen Fischrestaurants zu besuchen, die sich „der Herausforderung stellen, besondere Menüs für alle zu entwerfen“. Musik und Souvenirs gebe es ja sowieso überall in der Stadt. Die Absage des Festivals, für das erst voriges Jahr in einem Künstler-Wettbewerb ein Logo gefunden wurde, ist viel mehr als eine bloße Programmänderung: „Die ungünstige wirtschaftliche und finanzielle Lage, besonders für Familien habe die Stadt veranlasst, kommunale Investitionen zu sparen“, erklärte ein Sprecher des Rathauses. Sommerliche Speise- und Musik-Angebote werden „den Lokalen der Stadt als zusätzliche Einnahmequelle überlassen“. Die dürften sich freuen, denn auch für sie gilt, selbst im boomenden Sommer: Wo viel Licht ist, ist auch tiefer Schatten. Die Anhebung der Mehrwertsteuer auf 23 Prozent Anfang 2012 wirkt sich ruinös auf die Gastronomie aus: In 18 Monaten ging ein Viertel der Arbeitsplätze verloren. „Ohne die sofortige Steuersenkung auf 13 % könnten bis Ende des Jahres vier von zehn Jobs in der Gastronomie verschwinden“, so Mário Pereira Gonçalves vom Gaststättenverband AHRESP. Das wäre für Unternehmen, Mitarbeiter und Staat gleichermaßen desaströs, zitiert Gonçalves eine Studie der internationalen Wirtschaftsprüfer Ernst & Young: Ein niedriger MwSt-Satz könne die Zahl der Schließungen in der Gastronomie reduzieren und der Staatskasse 60 Millionen Euro sichern, die im umgekehrten Fall durch zu zahlende Sozialleistungen und den Einkommensteuerausfall des arbeitslosen Gastro-Personals ausgegeben werden müssten. Die Ersparnis wäre sogar höher als die erwarteten Mehreinnahmen beim geltenden MwSt‑Satz von 23 %. Knapp die Hälfte der Portugiesen, die ihre Sommerferien im eigenen Land verbringen, kommen in die Algarve. Der Euro ist ein knappes Gut im Geldbeutel der Gäste und gegenüber dem Sommer 2012 sind die Hotelpreise in Portugal im Schnitt um acht Prozent gestiegen, berichtet das Reiseinformationsportal Trivago. Dabei gibt es regionale Unterschiede: Im Raum Faro beträgt die Teuerung 15 %, den höchsten Sprung machten Albufeira und Portimão mit knapp über 40 %. Spartipp-Börsen, von denen es heute in Portugal so viele gibt wie nie zuvor. Groupon.pt, eine Gutschein-Webseite, die bei Anbietern Gruppenrabatt heraushandelt, wenn genügend Interessenten zusammenkommen, und Letsbonus.pt, die zeitlich begrenzt Schnäppchen anbietet, arbeiten eng mit dem Hotelund Gaststättensektor zusammen. Einige Supermärkte, Klubs und Verbände kooperieren mit Reisebüros und bieten Sonderangebote für Urlaubs-Service oder Käufe bestimmter Produkte von der Sonnencreme über die Liegestuhlmiete bis zur Schiffstour entlang der Küste. Einige Hotels in der Algarve übernehmen die Maut für Gäste, die über die Autobahn zum Urlaubsziel gereist sind. Nachfragen lohnt sich. So sind Handel und Bevölkerung nicht begeistert, wenn ein Publikums-Magnet wie das Sardinenfestival abgesagt wird. Die Fische „machen die Nahrung des gemeinen Mannes und die Leckerbissen der Vornehmen aus“, stellte 1801 der deutsche Naturwissenschaftler Heinrich Friedrich Link auf einer Algarve-Reise fest. Das gilt heute umso mehr im übertragenen Sinne: Tradition ist ein guter Verkaufsmotor. Der Stadtrat in Portimão kündigte deshalb vorsorglich an, im nächsten Jahr solle das ‚Festival da Sardinha‘ ein Revival erleben, mit „überarbeitetem Konzept und angepasst an die Lebensrealität der Gäste“. To be or not to be With more than fourteen million overnight stays per year, the Algarve welcomes more holidaymakers than any other region in Portugal. The market is competitive

ost readers of the local newspapers had to look twice to take in the real message behind the report: in the first eleven days of August, Portimão will celebrate “the icon of local gastronomy with a great public festival”. They are referring to the sardine, but what is hidden within this announcement is, in fact, a cancellation; the ‘Festival da Sardinha’, with its culinary highlights, shows, music, arts and crafts, for decades an attraction between Lagos and Lagoa on summer evenings, will simply not be taking place. As an alternative, the town is recommending guests to visit the local fish restaurants which have “set themselves the challenge of designing special menus for everyone”. Music and souvenirs are available anyway everywhere in the town. The cancellation of the festival, for which only last year there was an artists’ competition to find a

logo, is much more than merely a change of programme: The “unfavourable economic and financial situation, especially for families” had prompted the town to save on municipal investments, said a town hall spokesman. Summer food and music offerings are to be “handed over as an additional revenue source to the local restaurants in the town”. They should be happy as in the booming summer season this applies to them too: where there is much light, there are also dark shadows. The increase of VAT to 23 percent at the start of 2012 has had a disastrous effect on the restaurant trade: in 18 months a quarter of all working places have been lost. “Without an immediate tax cut to 13 percent, 4 out of 10 jobs in the restaurant trade could disappear by the end of the year”, according to Mário Pereira Gonçalves at the Restaurant Association AHRESP. That would be as much a disaster for businesses and staff as for the town, says Gonçalves, citing a study by the international auditors Ernst & Young: a lower rate of VAT could reduce the number of closures in the catering trade and would secure 60 million euros for the treasury, which otherwise would have to be paid out in social benefits for jobless restaurant personnel and in lost income tax revenue. The savings would in fact be even greater than the extra revenue expected from the current VAT rate of 23%. Almost half of the Portuguese who spend their summer holidays in their own country come to the Algarve. The euro is a scarce commodity in the pockets of these visitors and in comparison to 2012, hotel prices in Portugal have risen on average by 8 percent according to the travel information portal Trivago. There are of course regional differences: in the Faro region there has been an increase of 15%, the highest rise being in Albufeira and Portimão at just above 40%. At the same time, according to Trivago, there are also many places where prices are below the 2012 level. Tourists are aware of this and they use the discount exchanges, of which there are more than ever before in Portugal. Groupon.pt, a voucher website which organises group discounts from operators if enough interested parties get together, and Letsbonus.pt, which offers time limited bargains, both work closely together with the hotel and restaurant sector. Some supermarkets, clubs and associations cooperate with travel agencies to offer special deals on purchases of certain holiday products or services ranging from sun lotion to beach chair rental and cruises along the coast. Some hotels in the Algarve offer to pay the tolls for visitors who travel there on the motorway. It is worth asking. Consequently, both the trade and the population alike are less than thrilled when such a popular event as the sardine festival is cancelled. The fish “are the food of the common man, and the delicacy of the wealthy”, noted the German scientist Heinrich Friedrich Link on a journey through the Algarve in1801. This is even more the case today figuratively speaking: Tradition is a good sales engine. For that reason, the town council in Portimão made a precautionary announcement that next year the ‘Festival da Sardinha’ will experience a revival with a “revised concept tailored to the realities of visitors’ lives”. Führerschein Driving licence Ausländische Autofahrer, die in Portugal gemeldet sind und einen Wagen mit portugiesischem Kennzeichen fahren, stießen immer wieder auf Probleme, wenn sie mit einer Fahrerlaubnis aus ihrem Herkunftsland unterwegs waren. Allzu oft verhängten Verkehrspolizisten Bußgelder, obwohl die EU-Kommission bereits 2008 die Äquivalenz der Führerscheine bestätigte. Inzwischen gibt es eine neue EU‑Führerscheinrichtlinie, sie ist in Portugal bereits Landesrecht (Decreto‑Lei 138/2012) und soll die einheitliche Anerkennung aller Führerscheine aus EU‑Ländern sichern (es gibt über einhundert verschiedene Modelle). Wer einen ausländischen Führerschein besitzt, kann ihn nun auch als Residenter behalten, muss dies aber formal anerkennen lassen und die Bestätigung mitführen, die von der Behörde für Angelegenheiten des Straßenverkehrs (IMTT) ausgestellt wird. For foreign motorists who are registered in Portugal and drive a car with Portuguese number plates, there have always been problems if they were travelling with a driving licence from their home country. All too often traffic police fines were imposed, even though the EU Commission confirmed the equivalence of driving licences in 2008. Meanwhile, there is now a new EU directive on driving licences and it has already become national law (Decreto Lei 138/2012). This is intended to ensure that all licences from EU countries are uniformly recognised (there are more than one hundred different models). If you have a foreign driving licence, you can now keep it as a resident, but you must have it officially recognised and carry with you the confirmation which is issued by the Road Transport Affairs Authority (IMTT). Applicants have to submit a photocopy of their driving licence, tax ID number, passport or ID card and the ‘Cartão de Residência’ or some other certificate of residence issued by the Immigration Office SEF to the IMTT Instituto da Mobilidade e dos Transportes Terrestres; www.imtt.pt; Algarve: Faro, Rua Aboim Ascensão 10.

Die Läden hätten aber seit Januar nur noch ein Zehntel der Langfinger anzeigen können. Es sei ein falsches Signal, die Kriminalisierungs-Schwelle zu erhöhen. Wenn vermeintliche Klein-Klauereien nicht mehr der Strafverfolgung unterlägen, müssten die Firmen teure Alarmsysteme installieren, deren Kosten alle Kunden tragen.
