Neubelebtes Stadion Nachdem Gibraltar im Mai 2013 als 54. Mitglied in die Europäische Fußball-Union aufgenommen wurde und somit an WM- und EM-Qualifikationen teilnehmen darf, fehlte nur noch eins: ein UEFA-taugliches Stadion. Dieses fand die Nationalmannschaft des britischen Überseegebietes nun in der Algarve. Gibraltar wird die Qualifikationsspiele für die EM 2016 im Algarve-Stadion ausführen. Der Antrag seitens der Gibraltar Football Association kam den Bürgermeistern von Faro und Loulé sehr entgegen, denn Gibraltar wird pro Spiel - fünf Qualifikations- und noch einige Vorbereitungsspiele - ca. 25.000 Euro zahlen. Ein willkommener Betrag, um die jährlich anfallenden Wartungs- und Betriebskosten des meist leerstehenden Stadions zu finanzieren. Die Wahl fiel auf das Algarve-Stadion, da es das geographisch Nächstliegende war, das die UEFA-Kriterien erfüllte und bei dem es kein geopolitisches Konfliktpotential wie in Spanien gab.

After Gibraltar was admitted to the European Football Union as the 54th member in May 2013 and consequently will be allowed to participate in World Cup and European Championship qualifications, only one thing was miss ing: a UEFA-compatible stadium. And now, the national team of the British overseas territory has found one in the Algarve. Gibraltar will hold the qualifiers for the Euro 2016 at the Algarve Stadium. The request from the Gibraltar Football Association was warmly welcomed by the mayors of Faro and Loulé, seeing that Gibral tar – with five qualifying games and some preparation matches – will be paying 25,000 euro per game. A welcome sum for funding the resulting operating and annual maintenance costs of a mostly empty stadium. The choice was made for the Algarve Stadium, as it was the most obvious one geographically which fulfilled the UEFA criteria, and because there would be no potential geopolitical conflict as might have arisen in Spain.

Autobahngebühren Im kommenden Jahr soll das Gebührensystem für Portugals Autobahnen geändert werden. Das Parlament beschäftigt sich in diesem Monat mit den Plänen, die „Gerechtigkeit und Angleichung der Belastung in den Regionen des Landes schaffen“, heißt es in einer Mitteilung der Straßenämter IMTT und EP. Dem Vernehmen nach ist geplant, die elektronischen Erfassungs-Stellen entlang der Schnellwege stillzulegen und stattdessen die Fahrzeuge an den Auf- und Abfahrten der Autobahnen automatisch zu registrieren. Dann würden auch noch vorhandene Schlupflöcher mautfreier Streckenabschnitte geschlossen. Ob sich die Kosten pro Kilometer für die Autofahrer ändern, ist bislang nicht bekannt. Das derzeit geltende Mautsystem sei „ineffizient und nicht nachhaltig“, so EP-Präsident António Ramalho. Das Straßenamt gibt gegenwärtig 29% des gesamten Mautaufkommens allein zur Aufrechterhaltung des Systems aus; die Kosten sollen auf maximal 15% sinken. Einrichtung und Wartung der Erfassungsstellen entlang der früheren SCUT-Straßen, die bis Ende 2011 mautfrei waren, verursachten 2012 landesweit Kosten von über 76 Millionen Euro. Hingegen blieben die Einnahmen um ein Drittel hinter den Erwartungen zurück. Die Maut auf der Algarve-Autobahn A22 hatte wiederholt zu vehementen Protesten geführt und das Verkehrsaufkommen ging drastisch zurück.

Motorway tolls Next year will see a change to the toll system on Por tugal’s motorways. This month parliament will deal with plans to “establish fairness and even out the load in the regions of the country”, according to an announce ment from the highway offices IMTT and EP. According to reports, it is planned to shut down the electronic collection points along the expressways and instead automatically register the vehicles at motorway entrance and exit ramps. This would then block off the still exist ing toll-free loopholes on some sections. Whether they will change the cost per kilometre for drivers is not yet known. EP president António Ramalho has described the toll system presently in use as “inefficient and not sustain able”. The highway office currently spends 29% of the total toll revenue just to keep the system maintained; these costs should be reduced to a maximum of 15%. In 2012, the set-up and maintenance of recording points along the former SCUT roads, which were toll-free until the end of 2011, caused costs of about 76 million euro nationwide. In contrast, revenues were one-third lower than expected. Tolls on the A22 Algarve motorway had repeatedly led to vehement protests and the traffic vol ume dropped sharply.

Die 9. Ausgabe des Internationalen Querfeldein-Radmarathons der Algarve findet am 13. Oktober statt. Im Hinterland von São Bartolomeu de Messines sind drei Strecken mit unterschiedlichen Schwierigkeitsgraden abgesteckt. Die Veranstalter rechnen mit rund eintausend teilnehmenden Radsportlern aus vielen Nationen, die „neben Sport und Abenteuer eine der schönsten Naturlandschaften Portugals erleben können“. Auch Profis haben sich für die Rennen über 25 km, 50 km und 85 km angemeldet. In der traditionell radsportbegeisterten Region wächst insbesondere das Interesse an Offroad-Rennen auf zwei Rädern. Nach der Versenkung der ehemaligen Kriegsschiffe „Oliveira e Carmo”, „Zambeze” und „Comandante Hermenegildo Capelo”, wurde Ende September das Schiff „Almeida Carvalho“ vor der Küste von Portimão versenkt und somit der Unterwasserpark Ocean Revival vervollständigt. Ziel ist es, ein künstliches Riff zu schaffen, das Taucher aus der ganzen Welt in die Region ziehen soll. Gleichzeitig mit der Versenkung des letzten Schiffes wurde im städtischen Museum von Portimão eine Art Zweigstelle des Ocean Revivals eröffnet. In einer in der Zisterne des Museums aufgestellten U-Boo-ähnlichen Struktur önnen das künstliche Riff und die Geschichte der versenkten Schiffe bei „trockenen Tauchgängen“ entdeckt sowie die Entwicklung der Unterwasserfauna rund um das Riff beobachtet werden.

Ein wir ksamer Schutz vor staatlicher Ausspähung Ihrer Daten existiert also effektiv nicht. Dennoch sollten Sie unbedingt Verschlüsselungssoftware nutzen.

Abgesehen davon, dass die wichtigsten Telefongesellschaften die Verbindungsdaten ohnehin an die Geheimdienste melden, ist inzwischen durchgesickert, dass die NSA selbst gezielt auf sämtliche Nutzerdaten in iPhones, Android- und Backberry-Smartphones zugreifen kann. Bis vor kurzem wurde angenommen, dass dies nur den Herstellern (Apple, Google etc.) möglich sei. Gehen Sie diesen aus dem Weg und behalten das freie Firefox OS im Auge. Allein die Politik kann sich nun noch für den Schutz unserer Grundrechte einsetzen. In Großbritannien ist jedoch kein politisches Interesse erkennbar, die systematische Ausspähung der Bürger zu regulieren. Und in Deutschland, wo zuletzt Wahlkampf herrschte, ging keine einzige Partei mit dem Schutz von Grundrechten auf Wählerfang. Der Internet-affinen Piratenpartei sowie den Liberalen (FDP), vehemente Gegner der Vorratsdatenspeicherung, blieb der Einzug in den Deutschen Bundestag am 23. September 2013 verwehrt.

Only politics can now take a stand for the protection of our civil rights. In Great Britain though, there is no political interest in the matter of regulating the methodical espionage on civilians. And in Germany, which has been embroiled in the electoral campaign, there was not one party which tried to attract votes by promising to protect civil rights. The Pirate Party, who have an affinity for the internet, as well as the liberal party (FDP), both vehemently oppose data storage. They were denied a place in the German Bundestag in September 2013.

Was tun, wenn Kinder, Eltern und Großeltern einmal etwas gemeinsam erleben möchten? Ein Segway-Ausflug bietet lehrreichen und umweltschonenden Spaß für die ganze Familie

er Treffpunkt liegt etwa auf halber Strecke zwischen dem Flughafen und der Ilha de Faro. Unser junger portugiesischer Guide Nelson erwartet uns bereits, neben ihm warten fünf Segways. Auf diesen elektrisch angetriebenen Stehrollern werden wir gleich eine vogelkundliche Tour durch die Ria Formosa unternehmen. Doch bevor der Spaß beginnt, ist eine Einweisung erforderlich. Unsere „Personal Transporter“ stehen bereit – man stellt sich einfach auf eine kleine Plattform zwischen den beiden Rädern und hält sich an der Lenkstange fest. Aber widerspricht dies nicht den Gesetzen der Physik – warum steht der Segway so stabil? Ohne dass man es bemerkt, hält eine elektronische Antriebsregelung das Fahrzeug wie von Zauberhand stets aufrecht in Balance – das vermutlich einzige Zweirad der Welt, das einfach nicht umkippen will. Und es kommt noch besser: Die Fortbewegung wird allein durch Gewichtsverlagerung des Fahrers gesteuert. Neigt sich der Fahrer leicht nach vorn, nimmt der Segway Fahrt auf, und ein Zurücklehnen bremst das Gefährt bzw. lässt es rückwärts fahren. Die Steuerung über Neigungssensoren (Gyroskope) ist sehr intuitiv, entspricht die Funktionsweise doch dem aufrechten Gang eines Menschen. Begeistert drehen wir erste Runden, dann beginnt der Ausflug.

Der Caminho do Ludo führt uns auf einem Sandweg durch die Ria Formosa. Nelson fährt voraus, entlang von Salinen und Gewässern folgen wir ihm mit einer gemütlichen Geschwindigkeit von 5 bis 7 km/h. Ab und zu halten wir an, um Flamingos und andere Vögel zu beobachten. Nelson kennt sich mit Fauna und Flora unglaublich gut aus. Lebendig erklärt er uns die Besonderheiten der Gegend und weckt Begeisterung für die vielen kleinen Wunder, die die Natur hier so zahlreich bietet. Beim vierten Stopp entriegelt er die elektronische Geschwindigkeitsdrosslung unserer Transporter – jetzt können wir etwas schneller fahren. Die Kinder sind begeistert. Weiter geht‘s vorbei am São Lourenço Golf Club Richtung Quinta do Lago, lautlos und emissionsfrei. Wo immer wir anderen Menschen begegnen, wird uns fröhlich zugewunken – Segways belästigen niemanden. Bergab auf dem makellosen Straßenbelag Quinta do Lagos wird die Maximalgeschwindigkeit von 20 km/h schon mal erreicht, woraufhin der Segway den Fahrer sanft und sicher mit der Lenkstange zurückdrückt. Im weiteren Verlauf führt uns die Route am Lago und der Brücke zum Strand vorbei, die den Rückweg am Ufer einläutet. Mit Pausen hat der Ausflug etwa 1,5h gedauert, in denen wir rund 15 km zurückgelegt haben. Die maximale Reichweite eines Segways beträgt 40 km pro Batterieladung.

he meeting place is located about halfway between the airport and the Ilha de Faro. Nelson, our young Portuguese guide, is already waiting for us, next to him there are five Segways. In a moment, these electric powered scooters will be taking us on an ornithological tour of the Ria Formosa. But before the fun begins, a quick briefing is required. Our “personal transporters“ are ready for the off - you simply get onto a small platform between the two wheels and hold tight onto the handlebars. But does this not contradict the laws of physics - why is the Segway so stable? Without you even realising it, an electronic drive control keeps the vehicle in balance at all times as if by magic - probably the only motorised cycle in the world that just will not tip over. And it gets better. The movement is controlled solely by the rider shifting his or her weight. If the driver leans slightly forwards, the Segway sets off, and leaning back makes the vehicle brake or even makes it drive backwards. Controlling it via tilt sensors (gyroscopes) is very intuitive, functionally corresponding to way humans walk upright. Thrilled, we do a few laps, then the tour begins. The Caminho do Ludo takes us on a dirt road through the Ria Formosa. Nelson drives ahead, we follow him along salt marshes and waters at a comfortable speed of

5-7 km/h. Now and then we stop to observe the flamingos and other birds. Nelson knows the flora and fauna exceptionally well. His vivid explanations about the special aspects of the area make us enthusiastic about the many small miracles which nature provides here in plenty. After the fourth stop, he unlocks the electronic speed throttle on our vehicles - now we can go a little faster. The children are delighted. We continue past the Sao Lorenzo Golf Club, towards Quinta do Lago, silent and emissionfree. Wherever we meet other people, they cheerfully wave to us - Segways don’t bother anyone. Going downhill on the excellent road surface in Quinta do Lagos, we reach the maximum speed of 20 km/h, then the Segway pushes the driver back gently and safely with the handlebars. As we go on, the route takes us past Lago and the bridge to the beach, which marks the return trip to the shore. Including breaks, the trip took some 1.5 hours during which we covered around 15km. The maximum range of a Segway is 40 km per battery charge. You can’t really experience nature in a more environmentally friendly but motorised way than on a Segway. Nelson proudly tells us that our CO2 emissions – caused by the production of electricity in the battery – are about 23 g/km (cars: approx. 170 g/km). The consumption is a meagre 3 kWh per 100 km (an electricity cost of about

Stolz erklärt uns Nelson, dass unsere CO2-Emission – entstanden bei der Stromerzeugung für die Akkuladung – bei etwa 23 g/km gelegen hat (PKW: ca. 170 g/km). Der Verbrauch beträgt magere 3 kWh pro 100 km (Stromkosten ca. 50 Cent), was unter anderem dadurch erreicht wird, dass ein Segway beim Bremsen und Bergabfahren elektrische Energie generiert und in die Akkus zurückspeist. Erst nach der Tour erfahren wir, dass Nelson gleichzeitig Guide, Eigentümer, Manager, Fahrer etc. seiner Firma AlgarveBySegway ist. Seitdem sein Unternehmen bei TripAdvisor an Platz 1 der beliebtesten Freizeitattraktionen der Algarve geführt wird, kann Nelson die Nachfrage kaum bedienen. Die Serra de Monchique ist ein ideales Gebiet für Aktiv- und Freizeitsportler. Der Parque Aventura da Foia wirbt mit dem Motto “Natur Pur” für reichlich Bewegung in dem dort ansässigen Abenteuerpark. Vom Treffer spürt man nur ein leichtes Kneifen, die Farbkugeln bestehen aus einem Gel, das beim Aufprall eine biologisch abbaubare wasserlösliche Substanz verspritzt. Bei dem Spiel geht es um Kooperation und Strategie. Ziel ist es ein Objekt, zu erobern, als Symbol für den Sieg. Wenn die Regeln beachtet werden, gilt Paintball statistisch als sicherer Sport. Paintball is a team sport in which teams are equipped with masks, protective vests, goggles and a paintball gun to achieve their goal: to “take out” their opponents by marking them with paint balls. If you are hit, you only feel a slight tweaking; the paintballs are made of a gel which sprays out a biodegradable water-soluble substance upon impact. The game is about cooperation and strategy; the goal is to capture an object as a symbol for victory. If the rules are followed, paintball is statistically one of the safer sports.

When you enter the lobby of the CS Grande Hotel, located in the Salgados Nature Park (near Albufeira), the architecture and furniture overwhelm you with their minimalist generosity; huge areas with high ceilings, long sofa benches in front of similarly long tables and a reception area which never seems to end. The sprawling Grande Hotel Spa is located in the equally spacious ground floor of the hotel and you get there via three glass lifts. On the way to the spa, the large black and white pictures on the walls meet the eye and seem both attractive and oversized. Flamingos in the Ria, endless beaches and the sea in all its length and breadth - all motifs that the guest can experience in the direct vicinity of the complex. The spa stretches in a U-shape around the indoor pool. Over 1,200 square metres, there are eight treatment rooms, a thermal sauna and a steam bath, along with several rest areas. These conform to the hotel’s concept of size. The inviting indoor pool stands out – like the whole spa – by virtue of its simplicity. But appearances are deceptive; a built-in light therapy, which can illuminate the water in a choice of red, blue or warm yellow, and numerous jet nozzles ensure that the hydromassage on the built-in pool benches can work its effects . If you just want to drift in welltempered water, you will appreciate the pool’s “float function”. There is an extra Jacuzzi to round off this water experience. The pleasant and technically experienced staff offer anti-stress massage, sea salt scrubs and algae therapy and also treatments such as Vichy showers and Scottish showers. If you want to experience the Grande Hotel Spa, you can visit daily from 10.00-18.00. For a one-time entrance fee of € 10 per person, the Jacuzzi, the pool, the sauna and the Turkish bath can all be used. For afterwards you should plan a stroll in the open air through the rambling park which belongs to the hotel – it’s worth it, the nature park, with its wide variety of birds and white beaches provides more than enough opportunities to marvel and breathe in deeply. Katja Paweletz has identified a gap in the market: unlike other second-hand stores, in Scarface they will mainly be offering fashion and accessories. The clothing, shoes, bags and hats are not always second-hand, there are also goods from outlet stores on the shelves. The fact that Katja keeps an especially close eye on the quality of her goods is explained by her own passion for fashion. Even though it may only remain an idea, the busy entrepreneur would like to introduce her own footwear and clothing range next year - of course, under the label “Scarface Vintage”. Die Alchemistin der Stoffe In der kleinen Ortschaft Calvário hat die Interior Designerin Anna-Maria Ellinger den passenden Platz für ihr Atelier gefunden. Hier gestaltet sie Kreationen aus edlen Materialien An der Wand hängen Stoffmuster, Skizzen neuer Einfälle, Entwürfe, die auf einem großen Tisch Gestalt annehmen. Döschen mit Knöpfen, Pailletten, Perlen, Schnallen stehen daneben; ausgefallen und ungewöhnlich sind sie und erinnern kein bisschen an ein Kurzwaren-Sortiment. Anna-Maria Ellinger probiert Ideen aus, verändert oder verwirft sie wieder, fertigt an. „Allem Anfang wohnt ein Zauber inne...“ – das Gedicht von Hermann Hesse hat Ellinger mitten in das inspirierende Sammelsurium gehängt; es scheint symbolisch für ihren Berufsweg, der einmal mit einer juristischen Ausbildung begann. Seit 1984 lebt sie in der Algarve, arbeitete über zehn Jahre für ein Interior Design Studio. Als dort die Türen für immer schlossen, kaufte Ellinger Restbestände von Polsterstoffen auf, deren Vielseitigkeit sie erkannt hatte, und machte sich selbständig, nicht ohne das Handwerk in einem Online-Studium an der renommierten Londoner Tate Gallery zu professionalisieren. Wie eine Alchemistin der Stoffe schafft Ellinger die Synthese aus Materialien und Stilen. Fließendes wird mit festen Formen kombiniert, Glänzendes mit gedeckten Tönen. So entsteht eine Tasche aus einer Versace-Jeans-undBrokat-Kombination. Oder aus Samt. Der wurde bereits im 14. Jahrhundert in Venedig, Florenz und Mailand hergestellt und trat eine legendäre Reise durch Europa an; ganze Epochen schwelgten in Samt und Brokat. Warum also nicht eine Tasche gestalten, in der das ehrwürdige Material in klassischen Motiven wie Kandelaber, Mozartportraits oder Herbstlaub aufersteht. Diese Modehistorie wird dann, gefüttert mit Nappa oder Alcantara in aktueller Form und Dimension zu einem aus der Zeit gefallenen Hingucker für das 21. Jahrhundert, der zur Abendrobe ebenso wie zu Jeans passt. Das Image als Accessoire tritt in den Hintergrund, die Tasche wird

zum Mittelpunkt und verdrängt dennoch nicht den individuellen Stil der Trägerin. So eine Samt-Kreation kann auch als anregende Farbexplosion in Pink oder Apfelgrün daherkommen. Die Exklusivität von Ellingers Taschen beruht auf Material, auf Idee und Verarbeitung. Für Letztere hat die Designerin eine versierte Profi-Schneiderin verpflichtet. Schals fertigt sie selbst, auch Ketten aus Stoff, Perlen, Metallen, Pailletten, Seidenblütenblättern: Jede Kette ist einer starken Frau aus dem wahren Leben oder der Kunst gewidmet und erzählt eine eigene Geschichte. Gerade entwirft Anna-Maria Ellinger eine Tagesdecke. Sie verwendet verschiedene Seiden in Weiß- und Grautönen und appliziert Motive, drapiert raffinierte Asymmetrien neben klaren Linien. Wie bei den Taschen vermischen sich die Gattungen zwischen Kunstwerk und Gebrauchsgegenstand, abstrakt oder gegenständlich, Barock, Pop-art, Retro-Polkadots oder schlichte Eleganz.Dabei machen Accessoires nur einen Teil von Ellingers Arbeit aus. Die Interior Designerin hat stets das Gesamtbild vor Augen und berät bei der Einrichtung oder Umgestaltung von Wohn- und Geschäftsräumen, begleitet die Kunden beim Einkauf oder gestaltet gleich das ganze Domizil. Hierbei erwachen auch altgediente Möbelstücke nicht selten zu einem verblüffenden neuen Leben. Ellingers jüngere Leidenschaft ist die Malerei, in der „ich ruhe und mich wiederfinden kann“, sagt sie. Jars with buttons, sequins, beads, buckles are ready to hand; eccentric and unusual they are, not at all reminiscent of a little of a collection from a haberdashery shop. Anna-Maria Ellinger tries out her ideas, changes them or rejects them, produces them. “In all beginnings dwells a magic force …” - Ellinger has hung up the poem by Hermann Hesse in the middle of the inspirational omnium gatherum, it seems symbolic of her career, which once began with a legal education. She has been living in the Algarve since 1984, worked for ten years at a design studio. When the doors closed there forever, Ellinger bought some upholstery fabric remnants whose versatility she had realised and started her own business, not without first reaching a professional level in her craft by doing an online course from the prestigious Tate Gallery in London. Like an alchemist of textiles, Ellinger creates a synthesis of materials and styles. A combination of solid and fluid forms, shining with muted shades. This is how a bag is created from a pair of Versace jeans combined with brocade. Or from velvet. This was already being produced in the 14th century in Venice, Florence and Milan, and began a legendary journey through Europe; entire epochs revelled in velvet and brocade. So why not make a bag which resurrects this venerable material in classic motifs such as a candelabra, Mozart portraits or autumn foliage. This piece of fashion history, lined with nappa or alcantara, in a modern form and dimension then becomes an eye-catcher from another time for the 21st century which goes with evening wear as well as with jeans. The image as an accessory fades into the background;

the bag becomes the focus yet does not supplant the individual style of the wearer. A velvet creation like this may then make its appearance as an exciting explosion of colour in pink or apple green. The exclusivity of Ellinger’s bags depends on the material, on the idea and how they are made. For the latter, the designer has taken on an experienced professional dressmaker. She makes scarves herself, and also chains of fabric, beads, metals, sequins, silk petals: each chain is dedicated to a strong woman from real life or from art, and tells its own story. At the moment Anna-Maria Ellinger is devoting her time to making a bedspread. She is using various silks in white and shades of grey and applied motifs, draping it with subtle asymmetries next to clean lines. Just as with the bags, there is a mix between the genres of art and utilitarian objects, abstract or representational, Baroque, op art, retro polka dots or simple elegance. These accessories make up only a part of Ellinger’s work. The interior designer always has the big picture in mind and offers advice on furnishing or redesigning residential and business premises, supports clients in purchasing or simply designs the complete domicile. Here too, she can often awaken long-serving pieces of furniture to a startling new life. Ellinger’s latest passion is painting, in which she says, “I can rest and find myself again”. Gitarrenkonzert Villa-Lobos ist der bekannteste “nationale” Komponist Brasiliens. “Villa-Lobos in Bewegung“ ist in Kombination mit Tanz ein neuer Weg zu seinen Stücken für klassische Gitarre. Das Rezital bringt fünf Preludien für Gitarre, die verschiedenen Charakteren der brasilianischen Kultur gewidmet sind. Diese finden sich auch wieder in den Etuden und Chören, die die Preludien begleiten. Die Aufführung beginnt mit Villa-Lobos Tribut an den Einfluss Europas auf Brasilien während der Regentschaft des portugiesischen Königs João VI (1808-1825). Villa-Lobos verbindet dabei europäische Tradition mit volkstümlichbrasilianischen Festen, ursprünglich entstanden durch portugiesische Kolonialisten, afrikanische Sklaven und aus den Überlieferungen der Urbevölkerung. Auf seine besondere Art schuf er damit ein brasilianisches Oeuvre, das Generationen von Komponisten beeinflusst hat. Villa-Lobos is Brazil’s best known “national“ composer. “Villa-Lobos in motion“ represents a new way to experience his pieces for classical guitar in combination with dance. The recital comprises five preludes for guitar, dedicated to the different characters of Brazilian culture. These are also found in the etudes and chorus accompanying the preludes. The performance begins with Villa-Lobos’ tribute to the influence of Europe on Brazil during the reign of the Portuguese King João VI (1808-1825). Here, Villa-Lobos combines European tradition with popular Brazilian festivals, originally created by Portuguese colonists, African slaves, and the traditions of the indigenous population. In its own special way, he created a Brazilian oeuvre which has influenced generations of composers. The end of the piece is devoted to the Indios, the origin of the current Brazilian population. The CLCC - Language, Culture and Communication Centre is a private educational institution in Portimão which in 1990 began the construction of a school building and has now become a fixture in education in the Algarve, with more than 8,500 students. Claude Pannaye Muller Claude Pannaye Muller was born in Belgium where she studied Interior Architecture before moving to the States where she lived for 25 years. In the 80’s she discovered a passion for painting and joined different artistic associations before becoming a commercial artist. 2005 she moved with her husband to the Algarve and decided to teach all the wonderful things she had learned with experience. Her classes are flexible, informal and relaxed, to let creativity come out while learning different painting techniques. She likes to take into account the personal requests and preferences of her students, as far as what they would like to paint and learn, and assist and guide them from there.

Sextett mit jazziger Komponente

enn man sich im Netz schlau macht, was Jazz eigentlich bedeutet, bekommt man Hunderte von Hinweisen über Jazzrichtungen und Traditionen. Der Ursprung dieses weitgreifenden Begriffes liegt in den Südstaaten und wurde Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts überwiegend von den Afroamerikanern interpretiert. Bekannt daraus sind z. B. der New Orleans Jazz, der Dixiland Jazz oder der Swing, seinerzeit die wohl populärste Jazzart. Inzwischen gehören auch Musikformen zum Jazz, die oft nur andeutungsweise oder fast gar nicht mit der afroamerikanischen Tradition verbunden sind. An der Algarve findet man kaum Jazzmusiker, die auf die Wurzeln dieses Genres zurückgreifen. Jazz B´ Stards gehört zu den Bands, die sich auf den so genannten “Crossover” spezialisiert haben, und spielen eine Mischung aus klassischem und populärem Jazz. Bandleader Roger Clarke (Posaune) ist einer der Veteranen der Gruppe, ein Hüne aus Mittelengland mit knallblauen Augen, der sich vor 18 Jahren in der Umgebung von Lagos niedergelassen hat. In seiner Heimat spielte er traditionellen New Orleans Jazz in einer Brassband. An der Algarve hat er lange Jahre im Portuguese Jazz Orchestra Lagos mitgewirkt, und im Restaurant der Fortaleza von Lagos mit seiner Posaune regelmäßig die hauseigene Jazzband bei Auftritten zum Sonntagslunch begleitet. Batista (Gitarre), Vasco Moura (Bass), Tony de Sousa (Schlagzeug), Pedro Rijo (Saxophon) und der 18-jährigen Anais (Gesang) – eine große Band, die selten gebucht wird, da sie den meisten zu teuer ist. Ihr Umfeld beschränkt sich überwiegend auf Lagos, dort spielen sie in Restaurants und Bars wie dem Lighthouse, der Fortaleza oder der South Bar, aber auch privat wird das Sextett gerne für große Veranstaltungen wie Hochzeiten oder Jubiläen gebucht. Zu ihrem Repertoire gehören Coversongs von Amy Winehouse, Adele und Blondie, aber auch Disco-Rythmen a lá Average White Band sowie Ska Musik von Bands wie Specials oder Madness. Roger jagt keinen Gigs mehr hinterher, er ist zufrieden mit, dem was kommt. “In der Algarve leben unzählige Musiker, die in den Sommermonaten um jeden Auftritt kämpfen; die Möglichkeiten sind aufgrund der Krise und bürokratischer Hindernisse begrenzt”, sagt er. Deshalb überlässt der geschätzt 50-Jährige die Bühne gerne den jungen Branchenkollegen, die noch die Kondition haben, sich die Nächte mit regelmäßigen Auftritten um die Ohren zu schlagen, und geht lieber Segeln oder entspannt sich bei einem Bier in der Marina. Versteckt, auf halbem Weg zwischen dem Meer und dem hügeligen Norden der Algarve, liegt das kleine Dorf Moncarapacho mit seinen vielen historischen und archäologischen Geheimnissen. Das Community Museum Das Community Museum liegt fast in der Mitte des Dorfes und erscheint einem als ein bescheidenes Gebäude. Nachdemman durch die Tür eintritt, können seine ganzen Schätze von historischer Bedeutung betrachtet werden. Das Museum besitzt eine beträchtliche Sammlung von archäologischen Artefakten, die nicht nur die Geschichte Moncarapachos illustrieren, sondern auch die anderer Orte der Algarve. Aber das „Kronjuwel“ könnte wohl das Gebäude direkt daneben sein. Obwohl es von außen wie eine normale christliche Kapelle aussieht, offenbart diese von innen Ähnlichkeiten mit zerstörten römischen Tempeln, von denen man weiß, dass sie im Süden Portugals existierten, wie z. B. der römische Tempel von Milreu im nahegelegenen Estoi oder die zerfallenen Strukturen in Marim, Olhão. Dies könnte das allererste Beispiel eines bis heute überlebenden römischen Tempels sein, welcher zu einer christlichen Kapelle konvertiert wurde. Jedoch werden noch Erdarbeiten benötigt, um diese Theorie zu beweisen. Bis dahin bleiben die Ähnlichkeiten einfach nur ein interessanter Zufall. Merkmalen ist diese Kirche ein weiteres Beispiel für die Mischung architektonischer Ausdrucksweisen, die in religiösen Gebäuden in der Algarve üblich sind, wobei die Fassade des Gebäudes, von André Pilarte erbaut, eines der wichtigsten Beispiele der Kunst der Renaissance in der Region zeigt. Auch die Kirche hat ihre Geheimnisse: Die eingemeißelten Steinklötze auf der östlichen Seite der Fassade vermitteln den Anschein, auf der Spitze einer Säule mit zwei umgebenden Engeln zu stehen. Der künstlerische Stil dieser Engel ist ohne Zweifel romanisch. Dies zeigt, dass die ursprüngliche Kirche womöglich im zwölften Jahrhundert erbaut wurde, kurz nach der Eroberung der Algarve durch die Mauren. Die alten Straßen Richtung Norden werden die Straßen von einem kleinen Fluss eingegrenzt, der unter einigen Brücken durchfließt. Durch das Überqueren einer dieser Brücken starten Sie Ihre Erkundung! Während Sie gehen, werden Sie vielleicht Steinmuster auf dem Boden erkennen, bis Sie auf einen voll gepflasterten Gehweg kommen. Im Laufe der Zeit abgenutzt und somit extrem unregelmäßig, ist dies ohne Zweifel Teil einer Mittelalterlichen Straße, die Moncarapacho mit dem Norden verband. Weiter nördlich verschwindet der gepflasterte Weg, die Staubstraße verengt sich zu einem kleinen Pfad, umgeben von Bäumen und den besten Beispielen für die Flora der Algarve. Weiter nördlich besteht die Möglichkeit, die Pracht des römischen Straßenbaus zu erleben. Während die Pflastersteine größeren Steinblöcken weichen, wird die Straße regelmäßiger und definierter. Und die Steinblöcke glänzen sogar im Sonnenlicht! Dieses Stück römische Straße ist so gut erhalten, das man kaum glaubt mag, dass es 2.000 Jahre alt ist. Und trotzdem ist es komplett verlassen und nur den Einwohnern dieses geheimen Ortes kurz vor Moncarapacho bekannt. MONCARAPACHO A village small in size but big in secrets Hidden half-way between the sea and the hilly north of the Algarve, lies Thesmall village Moncarapacho with its many historical and archaeological secrets. The museum holds a significant collection of archaeological artefacts not only illustrating the history of Moncarapacho but also from other sites in the Algarve. A normal Christian chapel on the outside, the inside reveals similarities with ruined Roman temples known to have existed in the south of Portugal, such as the Roman temple of Milreu in nearby Estoi or the ruined structures in Marim, Olhão. This could be the very first example of a Roman temple converted to a Christian chapel that still survives to this day; groundwork is still needed to prove this theory correct. While walking you might start noticing stone patterns in the ground until finally you will notice a fully fledged cobblestone pavement in front of you. Extremely irregular due to the wear and tear of time, this is without any doubt a part of a medieval road that connected Moncarapacho to the north. Further north the pavement disappears, the dirt road narrows to just a small path surrounded by trees and the purest examples of flora from the Algarve. Further north it is possible to witness the magnificence of Roman road building. While the cobblestones give way to bigger stone blocks, the pavement becomes regular and defined. And the stone blocks actually shine with the sunlight! This stretch of Roman road is so well preserved that is hard to believe it really is 2000 years old. And yet it is completely abandoned; only known to the inhabitants of this secret place just outside Moncarapacho.

Die Pleite von „A Vida é Bela“ offenbart gleich mehrere Aspekte im Umgang mit Vouchern, die in Portugal so schnell zum Lieblingskind von Handel, Service und Kundschaft wurden, dass die Entwicklung auch die Juristen überrollt: Eine gesetzliche Definition für Voucher existiert nicht. Dabei gibt es für fast jedes Produkt, jede Dienstleistung irgendwo einen Gutschein und die Branche, die in Portugal ihren Zenit im Jahr 2011 erreichte, sieht seitdem ihren Markt unter einer Vielzahl von ähnlich operierenden Anbietern zersplittert. Die Verbraucher versuchen, die Spreu vom Weizen zu trennen und auch die Firmen, die durch Sonderaktionen Kunden gewinnen wollen, sind vorsichtig geworden. Zudem habe sich „das Konsumverhalten in Portugal deutlich verändert“, sagt die Wirtschaftswissenschaftlerin Joana Pinho. Gründe seien „die sinkende Kaufkraft und die unsichere Zukunft, die die Krise den Portugiesen gebracht hat und die sie empfänglich macht für jede Form sparsamen Wirtschaftens ohne Verlust von Lebensqualität“. Wer an Gerichtsverhandlungen teilnahm, erhielt im antiken Griechenland ‚Symbola‘, die er gegen eine Entschädigung eintauschen konnte. Auch der portugiesische Staat arbeitet seit Langem mit Vouchern: Mitte der 1980er Jahre wurde mithilfe von Gesundheits-Schecks die mangelnde Zahnpflege in weiten Teilen der Bevölkerung bekämpft. Das Modell war so erfolgreich, dass 2004 daraus eine der ersten öffentlich-privaten Partnerschaften wurde: Das Gesundheitsministerium erweiterte die Basis für die Zahnarzt-Voucher und bezog alle interessierten Ärzte in das Versorgernetz ein. Vida é Bela – “Life is Beautiful”. Who could possibly resist a company with such a name, especially since it has at the ready deals for holidays and leisure activities in the form of vouchers? The problem is, life is no longer beautiful: the company is bankrupt! The voucher portal “A Vida é Bela” is in debt to the tune of € 13 million with no assets. The claimants, around 1,500, “don’t stand a chance of seeing a single cent”, according to the company’s lawyer. Those affected include traders who have lost their commission, private customers whose holiday discount

vouchers are being rejected by hotels, and the BES bank as the main creditor. The collapse of “A Vida é Bela” reveals several aspects pertaining to the use of vouchers, which have become the darling of trade, service and customers so quickly that its development even took jurists by surprise: there is no legal definition for vouchers. Despite this, there is a voucher out there for almost every product and service: the branch, which reached its peak in Portugal in 2011, now sees its market splintered by a multitude of similarly operating providers. Consumers trying to separate the wheat from the chaff, and even companies trying to gain customers by means of special campaigns, have become cautious. Additionally, “consumer behaviour in Portugal has changed significantly”, according to economist Joana Pinho. The reasons behind this could be “the sagging purchasing power and the unsure future afforded the Portuguese by the crisis and which is making them receptive to all forms of thrift without losing any quality of life”. In the meantime, universities have discovered the voucher sector as a research object. One of the studies demonstrates: vouchers which can be used nationally are only practical for national players. People “are more receptive to interesting offers in their immediate vicinity. Due to the price but also to add a bit of spice to their lives”, according to Pinho. Bargains are not mutually exclusive to lifestyle. However, anyone who only offers tempting prices is interchangeable as a company and a brand. Vouchers only result in increased sales if it is not only bargain hunters who are attracted, but rather if new customers feel a sense of commitment to the company over the long term and, at

the same time, existing customers, who have paid the full price, are not upset. A cost-benefit simulator (www.couponcalculator.de in German and English) has been developed at the chair for e-commerce at Frankfurt am Main’s Goethe University to help companies weigh up the conditions under which a voucher campaign could be profitable. Several retail and supermarket chains rely on exclusivity and give registered customers several coupons per week for general discounts, for special campaigns or for individual products. The assumption is that customers who say no to the question “do you have a loyalty card” leave the shop with a feeling that they are missing something. “Mobile couponing” is gaining in popularity: regular customers and selected groups of buyers are sent their electronic vouchers directly to their mobile phones: they can redeem them at the cash desk. You don’t even need a smartphone for the text on the phone. “The concept will be amazingly successful,” according to an economist at Aveiro University. The customer divulges a great deal of information regarding his purchasing habits, finances and lifestyle in order to receive bonuses via his loyalty card: however, this doesn’t change the current sensitization towards data collectors. Cash is the real McCoy, even when it comes in the form of vouchers. A further study showed that companies issuing vouchers are more likely to stay in the memories of consumers, even after the campaign, than companies working exclusively with traditional forms of advertising. This happy-hour effect produces returning shoppers, Joana Pinho discovered: “Online vouchers also stimulate offline business” and lift purchasers from the virtual world of discounts directly into physical shops.

Budgeting using vouchers is nothing new: Roman emperors distributed “tesserae” amongst the population, vouchers which could be exchanged for bread and games: for corn, wine and visits to the brothel. In Ancient Greece, those engaged in court hearings were given “symbola” which could be exchanged for compensation payment. The Portuguese state has also been working with vouchers for some time: inadequate dental hygiene amongst large parts of the population was controlled with the aid of health cheques in the mid-1980s. The model was so successful that it resulted in the first public-private partnerships in 2004: the ministry of health extended the basis for the dentist voucher and included all interested doctors in the network of providers. There are now vouchers available at the job centre, in the education system and in the public transport system in order to “ensure the equality and efficiency of the public utility infrastructure and to apportion public funds in a targeted, controlled fashion,” according to researcher Pinho. Unlike private-sector vouchers, however, state vouchers are not suitable for the short-term stimulation of the economy: the associated administrative costs would generally be too high.
