“City air makes you free” was a principle of law in the Middle Ages, referring to bonded labourers who left their lords and stayed a year and a day in the city, thereby gaining their freedom from bondage and becoming members of urban society with their own rights. Right up to today, cities have lost none of their attraction, albeit, under different circumstances of course: urban life is synonymous with economic development, modern living, good infrastructure, culture and participation in social progress. Villages become less important, something which is seen in the Algarve as a problem because a having fallow hinterland puts the development of the towns at risk. They, in turn, despite all the efforts at modernisation, attempt to preserve the cultural heritage of the historical centres which the tourists enjoy and which are thus an economic factor. A bird’s eye view reveals all that better than any thesis. For that reason, Algarve Vida will be taking to the air: join us on the following pages on a heavenly journey through the region, accompanied by some very down to earth information.

„Stadtluft macht frei“ lautete ein Rechtsgrundsatz im Mittelalter, denn Fronarbeiter, die ihre Lehnsherren verließen und sich ein Jahr und einen Tag lang in der Stadt aufhielten, verloren ihre Unfreiheit und wurden Mitglieder der urbanen Gesellschaft mit eigenen Rechten. Bis heute haben Städte ihre Anziehungskraft nicht verloren, natürlich unter anderen Vorzeichen: Städtisches Leben gilt als Synonym für wirtschaftliche Entfaltung, modernes Wohnen, gute Infrastruktur, Kultur und Teilhabe am gesellschaftlichen Fortschritt. Dörfer verlieren an Bedeutung, was in der Algarve als Problem erkannt ist, denn brachliegendes Hinterland gefährdet auch die Entwicklung der Städte. Die wiederum versuchen bei allem Modernisierungsstreben, das kulturelle Erbe der historischen Zentren zu bewahren, die den Touristen gefallen und somit ein Wirtschaftsfaktor sind. Zum Bild von Albufeira gehören unvermeidlich ewig grüne Pinien. Doch diese leiden derzeit unter dem Angriff der gefährlichen Prozessionsraupen. Um sie zu bekämpfen und die Pinien zu retten, will das Rathaus von Albufeira die Kräfte eines anderen kleinen Tieres einsetzen: die der Meise. Die Gemeinde ist dabei, in besonders schwer befalle nen Gebieten und in Bildungseinrichtungen Nistkästen anzubringen, mit dem Ziel, den Meisen die Brutauf zucht zu erleichtern. Eine clevere Idee, die gleich zweimal effektiv ist: Prozessionsraupen sind die Haupt ernährungsquelle der Meisen und vor allem während der Brutzeit verfüttern sie besonders viele davon an ihren Nachwuchs. Eine umweltfreundliche Schädlings bekämpfung, die noch dazu zur biologischen Vielfalt beiträgt. Zwischen Februar und Mai sind die geschlüpften Rau pen der Prozessionsspinner eine Gefahr für Mensch und Tier. Ihre giftigen Brennhaare können schwerste Hautreaktionen mit Juckreiz und Ausschlägen sowie Atemnot und Schwindel oder einen anaphylaktischen Schock verursachen.

The evergreen pines form an essential part of the backdrop in Albufeira. However, these are currently under attack from the dangerous pine processionary moth. To combat them and to save the pine trees, the town hall of Albufeira intends to use the powers of another small animal: those of the titmouse. The community has started to set up nesting boxes in particularly badly infested areas and in educational institutions, with the aim of facilitating titmouse brood rearing. A clever idea which is actually doubly effective: processionary moth caterpillars are the main food source of titmice and, especially during the breeding season, they feed very many caterpillars to their young. Environmentally friendly pest control which also contributes to biodiversity in the region. It is between February and May that the hatched caterpillars of the processionary moth are a danger to humans and animals. Their poisonous stinging hairs can cause severe skin reactions with itching and rashes, along with shortness of breath and dizziness or anaphylactic shock.

Neuer Surfclub An einem der weniger bekannten Strände der Algarve fand am 12. Oktober das Xiringuito Surf Fest statt, das Gründungsfest des Albufeira Surf Clube. Eine Gruppe von jungen Surfern aus der Umgebung hatte vor einigen Mona ten die Idee, den ersten Verein für diese Sportart im Kreis Albufeira zu gründen. Der kleine Küstenstreifen zwischen der Praia do Xiringuito und Praia da Galé ist ein wichtiger „Spot“ für die Surfercommunity der Region, die aus einer Kerngruppe von ca. 70 Anhängern besteht. Das Event lockte rund 200 Gäste in die kleine Bucht, wo sie bei kühlen Getränken, Schwein am Drehspieß und chilligen Reggae-Rhythmen - live gespielt von Ben & The Pirates - den noch sehr warmen Oktobernachmittag ge nießen konnten. Am Ende gab es eine Tombola mit vielen attraktiven Prei sen. Dank der großzügigen Sponsoren - wie das Hotel Vila Joya, das ein Mittagessen für zwei Personen stiftete und auch die Location für das Fest zur Verfügung stellte - wur den insgesamt 73 Preise verlost. Ausserdem steckten zwei Surfbretter (von Plancton und von Ferox), mehrere Abend essen in diversen Restaurants (Pedras Amarelas,São Domingos, etc) und viele Surfaccessoires und RabattGutscheine im Lostopf. Das gesammelte Geld soll dem Verein ermöglichen, sich eine Plattform zu schaffen, um den Surfsport in und um Albufeira zu propagieren. Geplant sind u.a. Kurse für Wellenreiten, Kitesurf und Stand Up Paddling. Aber auch andere junge Sportarten wie Skateboard oder BMX will der Albufeira Surf Clube in seiner Stadt fördern. Ausserdem soll durch Kooperationen mit den örtlichen Schulen und der Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Albufeira, minderbe darften bzw. behinderten Kindern und Jugendlichen der Zugang zum Surfsport ermöglicht werden. Ab Ende des Jahres, so hoffen die Gründer, soll der Club einen festen Sitz bekommen, von wo aus diverse Veran staltungen und Kurse geplant und angeboten werden. New surfing club On October 12, on one of the lesser known beaches in the Algarve, the Xiringuito surf festival was held to celebrate the founding of the Albufeira Surf Clube. A few months ago a group of young surfers from the region had the idea of setting up the first club for this kind of sport in the Albufeira district. The small coastal strip between the Praia do Xiringuito and Praia da Galé is an important spot for the region’s surfing community, which consists of a core group of about 70 devotees. The event attracted nearly 200 guests to the small bay where they could enjoy the very warm October afternoon with a cool drink, pork on a spit and some chilled reggae rhythms - played live by Ben & The Pirates. At the end there was a raffle with lots of attractive prizes. Thanks to some generous sponsors - such as the Hotel Vila Joya, which donated a lunch for two people and also provided the venue for the festival - a total of 73 prizes were given away. There were also two surfboards (from Plancton and Ferox), several vouchers for evening meals in various restaurants (Pedras Amarelas, São Domingos, etc) and many surfing accessories and discount vouchers, all of which went into the pot. The money collected is intended to enable the club to create a base for promoting the sport of surfing in and around Albufeira. There are plans for courses in surfing, kite surfing, stand up paddling and many more. However, the Albufeira Surf Clube would also like to promote other new sports like skateboarding or BMX in the town. By the end of the year, the founders of the club hope to have a permanent base set up where they will be able to plan and offer various events and courses. NEWS Staatsetat 2014 Um die mit der Troika vereinbarten Haushaltsziele zu erreichen und das Vertrauen der Anleger wiederzugewinnen, plant Portugals Regierung weitere harte Sparmaßnahmen. Der Haushalt für 2014 sieht Ausgabenkür zungen von 3,9 Milliarden Euro vor, die vornehmlich über Senkungen der Gehälter im Staatsdienst und bei den Renten erreicht werden sollen. Das Parlament, in dem die sozialdemokratische Regierung dank Koalition mit der CDS über eine Mehrheit verfügt, dürfte dem Entwurf zustimmen. Aller dings könnte das Verfassungsgericht wieder Einwände erheben. 2014 sollen die Gehälter im Staatsdienst ab 600 Euro zwischen 2,5 % und 12 % gekürzt werden. Zudem will die Regierung die Zahl der Beamten min destens um weitere 2 % reduzieren. Vor allem in den Schulen soll Personal gekürzt werden. Dem Bildungsbereich werden nächstes Jahr 580 Mio. Euro weniger zur Verfügung stehen. Die bereits 2012 und 2013 gekürzten Ausgaben im Gesundheitsbereich sollen ebenfalls gesenkt werden; um 300,4 Mio. Euro. Arbeitslosengeld, Renten und Pensionen werden eben falls gekürzt. Die Regierung beharrt somit auf dem harten Spar kurs, musste jedoch einräumen, dass dieser 2013 nicht die gewünschten Ergebnisse brachte, denn das Haushaltsdefizit im laufenden Jahr soll voraus sichtlich 5,9 % des Bruttoinlandsprodukts erreichen und somit das mit der EU vereinbarte Ziel von 5,5 Prozent übersteigen. Dennoch sieht der Haushalts entwurf für 2014 eine Rückführung des Defizits auf 4 % des BIP vor. Finanzministerin Finance minister Maria Luis de Albuquerque

The budget for 2014 foresees spending cuts of 3.9 billion euro which is to be achieved primarily through reductions in salaries in the civil service and pensions. The parliament, in which the social democrats have a majority thanks to a coalition with the CDS, is likely to approve the scheme. However, the constitutional court could once again raise objections. In 2014, salaries in the civil service over 600 euro will be reduced by between 2.5% and 12%. In addition, the government aims to reduce the number of civil servants by a further 2%. It is in schools, above all, where they are looking to reduce staff. Next year there will be 580 million euro less spent on education. Expenditure in the health sector, already cut in 2012 and 2013, is also to be reduced by 300.4 million euro. Unemployment benefit and pensions are also to be reduced. It’s raining stars in the Algarve

Sterneregen in der Algarve Ein Menü, zubereitet von Joan Roca, Chef des „El Cel ler de Can Roca“ (3 Michelin-Sterne) in Spanien, das als eines der weltweit besten Restaurants gelistet wird, bildet den Höhepunkte des 7. International Gourmet Festival, dass vom 7.-17. November im Hotel Vila Joya stattfindet. Eine Zusammenführung von 37 Köchen mit insgesamt mehr als 60 Sternen präsentieren das Beste, was die internationale Küche zu bieten hat, inklusive Spitzenweine im Wert von 350 bis 600 Euro. Auch andere renommierte Namen findet man unter den Beteiligten, wie die der Portugiesen Nuno Mendes („Reisender“, London, 1 Michelin-Stern) oder Quique Dacosta („Quique Dacosta“, Spanien, 3 Michelin-Ster ne). Das Festival beinhaltet verschiedene thematische Abendessen und schließt wie immer mit „Koschina & Friends“ – einem speziellen Abend, der sich ganz den Küchenchefs widmet. Chefkoch Dieter Koschina lädt hierzu ein paar Freunde ein; viele helfende Hände, die ihn bei den Vorbereitungen zu dem krönenden Abschluss unterstützen. Das Ereignis wird seit 2005 veranstaltet und begann als Hommage an die Gründe rin von Vila Joya, Claudia Jung, die die gehobene Gas tronomie liebte. Das Hotel wurde 1982 eröffnet und hat sich in den letzten sieben Jahren in der Kategorie der weltbesten „Boutique Resorts“ der World Travel Awards einen Namen gemacht. Dieter Koschinas Restaurant steht mit 2 Michelin-Sternen auf Platz 37 in der Liste der 50 besten Restaurants der Welt. Paralell bietet dieses Jahr die Veranstaltung auch in anderen erstklassigen Hotels kulinarische Highlights sowie erlesene Weinproben und Olivenöl-Präsentationen, z.B. in der Herdade da Malhadinha Nova bei Beja, im Monte Rei Golf & Country Club bei V.N. de Cacela und im Conrad Algarve Hotel in Quinta do Lago. A set meal, prepared by Joan Roca, head chef at the “El Celler de Can Roca” (3 Michelin stars) in Spain, which is listed as one of the world’s best restaurants, provides the highlight of the 7th International Gourmet Festival which takes place from 7th to 17th November at the Hotel Vila Joya. A gathering of 37 chefs, with more than 60 stars between them, showcase the best that international cuisine has to offer, including premium wines valued at 350 to 600 euros. There are also other well-known names among the participants, such as the Portuguese Nuno Mendes (“Viajante”, London, 1 Michelin star) or Quique Dacosta (“Quique Dacosta”, Spain, 3 Michelin stars). The festival includes various themed evening dinners and as always closes with “Koschina & Friends” a special evening dedicated to all the chefs. For this, head chef Dieter Koschina invites a few friends; a lot of helping hands to help him with the preparations for the grand finale. The event has been held since 2005 and began as a tribute to the founder of Vila Joya - Claudia Jung, who loved premium-class gastronomy. The hotel was opened in 1982 and has made a name for itself over the last seven years in the category of the world’s top “boutique resorts” in the World Travel Awards. Dieter Koschina’s restaurant, with 2 Michelin stars, is ranked 37 in the list of the 50 best restaurants in the world. At the same time, as part of this year’s event there will be culinary delights, fine wine tasting opportunities and olive oil presentations on offer in other first class hotels, e.g. in the Herdade da Malhadinha Nova in Beja, the Monte Rei Golf & Country Club in V.N. de Cacela and the Conrad Algarve Hotel in Quinta do Lago. Klare, moderne Eleganz ganz in weiß und türkis – teilweise schon futuristisch anmutend - vereint mit einem herausragenden Service und einer fantastischen Lage am Praia da Falésia machen dieses Hotel zu einem idealen Ort für ein ebenso beeindruckendes Spa: das sayanna wellness Spa. Es befindet sich ebenerdig gegenüber dem á la carte Restaurant „abayad“ und erstreckt sich mit seinen 1.500qm über zwei Etagen. Kaum haben sich die Türen des Empfangs hinter einem geschlossen, beginnt die Entspannung; sanfte Klänge und ein feiner Duft aus Blumen und Zitrus stimmen perfekt auf das bevorstehende Wohlfühlprogramm ein. Im unteren Bereich des Spas befinden sich die wohlbeheizten Umkleideräume, das Spa-eigene Gym, der Fitnessraum, in dem täglich ab 10 Uhr Kurse wie Pilates, Yoga und Stretching angeboten werden, sowie der Indoorpool; nur eine von drei Aqualandschaften, die das Spa zu bieten hat. Doch dieser Pool hat neben seiner imposanten Größe und den etlichen Ruhebereichen noch eine ganz besondere Raffinesse – man kann auch im Winter bei schönstem Algarve-Wetter unter freiem Himmel schwimmen, da sich das Glasdach über ihm komplett öffnen lässt. Hat man sich nun in seinen im zugeteilten Schließfach bereitgestellten Bademantel gehüllt, geht es über die offene Treppe in den ersten Stock. Dort befinden sich

neben den fünf Einzel-Behandlungsräumen eine VichyDusche, der Paar-Behandlungsraum, der Ruheraum sowie die Aqualandschaft mit Sauna und Dampfbad. Alle Räume folgen einem klaren Designkonzept, das den Gast zum Wohlfühlen einlädt, aber nicht unnötig ablenkt. Die Farben Weiß und Braun spielen neben Gold, viel Glas und Holz eine wichtige Rolle. Das fachlich versierte Personal bietet eine Vielzahl von Massagen an, die den asiatischen Techniken folgen und so klingende Namen wie „Muka Abhyanga“ oder „Yantra“ tragen. Die im Spa verwendeten Produkte entstammen ausschließlich dem italienischen Familienunternehmen Gerard´s. Wenn das Wetter es zulässt, kann man sich in einem der zwei Zelte auf der Dachterrasse des Spas behandeln lassen und z.B. die „Lulur“ oder „Soy Soy“ Massage mit atemberaubenden Blick über das Meer genießen. Paaren stehen im sayanna wellness ganz besonders schöne Extras zur Verfügung. So gibt es im Paar-Behandlungsraum eine Badewanne, in der man mit verschieden pflanzlichen Essenzen eine entspannende Nackenmassage direkt im Wasser erleben kann. Oder auch der separate Pavillon, ebenfalls auf der Dachterrasse, mit eigenem Ruhe-und Behandlungsraum, Bad, Jacuzzi und Terrasse mit Blick über den Atlantik. „Da kann man schon mal die Zeit vergessen“ sagt mir Rita Rodrigues, die Spa- und Fitness-Koordinatorin mit einem Lächeln, da es schon vorkam, dass sie ein Paar zwei Stunden nach der Behandlung sanft

he very popular and high-priced restaurant from the 90s, “Jardim do Vale” in Almancil, has been under new management since early September. After years of experience in the hotel and catering industry, the very likeable couple, Luis and Monica, have fulfilled their dream of owning a restaurant. They both already knew the “old” Jardim do Vale from their childhood – seeing as they grew up, went to school and fell in love in Almancil, and then worked with Henrique Leis, who got his Michelin star at that time. Head-hunters took Luis off to London to establish the Electric House in Notting Hill as a trendy private club with a brasserie for the Soho Group. But after years, their love for their home drew them back to their family. And the family provides the two of them with a lot of support – Joao, Luis‘s brother, is the head chef in the kitchen and cooks the most delicious Portuguese cuisine with an international twist all from local produce. For example, in his kitchen the bacalhau is not salted, as it normally is here in Portugal, but comes unsalted as one of the traditional dishes. “I ate it the first time in London and, as a Portuguese, I was so flabbergasted at what a deli-

Her sister serves, her mother washes and irons the white tablecloths in her laundry at the end of the road and his brother Igor takes care of the garden - a real family business with heart and soul. Frischer Bacalhau mit Muscheln & Jerusalem Artischocken

Fresh bacalhau baked with clams & Jerusalem artichokes

Zutaten: Frischer Bacalhau vom Markt Tipp: am besten bestellen Sie den frischen Bacalhau vor, da es in Portugal eher üblich ist, ihn getrocknet zu verkaufen Portugiesische Muscheln, ½ Dutzend Topinambur (Jerusalem Artischocken), Salz & Pfeffer, Knoblauch, Zitrone, Olivenöl, Weißwein

Ingredients: Fresh bacalhau from the market. Tip: you need to pre-order it as in Portugal it is more common to find the cured bacalhau (traditional) Portuguese clams, ½ dozen Jerusalem artichokes Salt & pepper, garlic, lemon, olive oil, white wine

Zubereitung: Würzen Sie den Bacalhau mit etwas Salz & Pfeffer. Das Olivenöl in einer Pfanne erwärmen und den Fisch mit der Haut nach unten für ein paar Minuten braten, bis diese goldbraun ist. Drehen Sie den Bacal hau in der Pfanne um und fügen Sie ein gutes Dutzend portugiesische Muscheln, ein Glas Weißwein, den Saft einer halben Zitrone, ein paar Knoblauchzehen und ein halbes Dutzend Topinambur dazu. Die Mischung dann im vorgeheizten Ofen bei 180 Grad für etwa 15 Minuten backen. Um den leckeren Fond genießen zu können, servieren Sie das Gericht in einem tiefen Teller. Dazu empfehlen wir einen sehr knackigen und trockenen Weißwein.

Method: Season the bacalhau with some salt & pepper, heat a pan with some good quality olive oil. The fish goes in skin down for a couple of minutes and, when the skin is golden brown, you flip the bacalhau over, add a good dozen Portuguese clams, a glass of white wine, squeeze in half a lemon, add a couple of garlic cloves just pierced and half a dozen Jerusalem artichokes. Put it into a preheated oven at 180 degrees for about 15 minutes and serve in a half-deep plate to enjoy all the juices. To go with the dish we recommend a very crisp and dry white wine.

Radwanderung Albrecht Finger (63) und Hans-Günter Behrens (62) teilen nicht nur ihre Leidenschaft fürs Fahrradfahren, sondern haben auch gemeinsame Freunde in der Ostalgarve. Da ein Besuch schon lange ausstand, beschlossen die Pensionäre, Ende August nach Moncarapacho zu radeln. Allerdings wohnen die beiden im Ammerland (Niedersachsen), etwa 2800 Kilometer von Südportugal entfernt. Die große Tour war bestens geplant; insgesamt 28 komfortable Etappen in Deutschland, den Niederlanden, Belgien, Frankreich, Spanien und Portugal waren vorgesehen. Gerade einmal 15 kg Gepäck konnte jeder Fahrer in den Seiten- und Lenkertaschen seines Trekkingrades mitnehmen – jedes Gramm zählt, nicht nur in den Ardennen, den Pyrenäen und der Sierra. Bei bester Laune brachen die erfahrenen Radler am 24.8. in Gristede auf. Unter meist guten Wetterbedingungen legten sie pro Tag rund 100 Kilometer in ca. 6 Stunden zurück, so dass an den einzelnen Zwischenstopps genug Zeit für Sightseeing, Land und Leute blieb. Schon von unterwegs wurden Tagesberichte unter radsport-rastede.de (nur in deutscher Sprache) veröffentlicht. Aus den ursprünglich geplanten 28 wurden letztlich 32 Etappen, und statt 2800 wurden insgesamt 3200 Kilometer zurückgelegt. Entspannt und glücklich erreichten die Radwanderer am 26.9. ihr Ziel und genossen noch einige Tage die Strände der Algarve, bevor das Abenteuer mit dem Rückflug nach Deutschland seinen Abschluss fand.

Bicycle tour Albrecht Finger (63) and Hans -Günter Behrens (62) not only share a passion for cycling, but also have mutual friends in the Eastern Algarve. Since a visit to the Algarve was a long time coming, at the end of August the retirees decided to cycle to Moncarapacho. However, the two live in the “Ammerland“ region in Lower Saxony, Germany, about 2800 kilometers from Southern Portugal. The grand tour was well planned out, a total of 28 comfortable stops in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Spain and Portugal were arranged. They could only take 15 kg of baggage in the side and handlebar bags of their trekking bikes - every gram counts, not just in the Ardennes, the Pyrenees or the Sierra. In high spirits, the experienced cyclists set of on the 24th of August from the small town of Gristede. Mostly under good weather conditions they cycled about 100 kilometers a day in around 6 hours, to leave enough time for sightseeing, the countries and its people. During their journey they published daily reports of the trip on www. radsport-rastede.de (only available in German). The originally planned 28 stages, turned into 32 stages, and instead of a total of 2800 kilometers they cycled 3200 kilometers. Relaxed and happy the cyclists reached their destination on September 26th and after enjoying a few days at the beach, the adventure was concluded by a flight back to Germany.

“Gehören Sie auch zu den Menschen, die meinen, nicht singen zu können? Nun, fast jeder kann singen!” Dieser Meinung ist zumindest Sylvy Keenan, die Musikdirektorin von “Bella A Capella”, dem hier ansässigen Barber Shop Chorus. Zusammen mit Gail Grainger, dem Präsidenten von SABS (Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers) möchte sie Ende November mit einem Workshop Interessierte einladen, diese Musiktechnik zu erlernen. Ein paar Wochen vor dem Workshop werden allen Teilnehmern Übungsstücke ausgehändigt, die es zu erlernen gilt und die am Veranstaltungstag unter der Leitung von Sylvy in der Gruppe einstudiert werden. Am Abend sind dann Familie und Freunde der Teilnehmer eingeladen, um dem Ergebnis zu lauschen.

“Are you one of those people who think they can’t sing? A few weeks before the workshop, all the participants will receive exercise pieces which they have to learn and which will be rehearsed in the group on the day of the event under Sylvy’s direction. Then, in the evening, family and friends of the participants will be asked along to enjoy the results.

BELLA A CAPELLA Ein “Barbershop Chorus” sucht Anhänger

ylvy Keenan, Emmy Wijsmann und Andrea Knöpfle sind drei der bis dato 13 weiblichen Mitglieder von „Bella A Capella“, dem einzigen Barbershop Chorus an der Algarve. Die Frauen unterschiedlichen Alters kommen aus England, Holland, Deutschland, Irland und Frankreich und leben größtenteils an der Algarve. „Leider haben wir viel zu wenig Mitglieder“ klagt Sylvy, die den Chor im Jahr 2008 mit vier Frauen gründete und seitdem die musikalische Leiterin ist. Die Damen sind eifrig auf der Suche nach Neuzugängen. Sie versichern voller Überzeugung, dass man kein Gesangstalent sein muss, um bei ihnen mitzusingen. Sylvy ist der Meinung, dass jeder Mensch das Potential hat: „Man muss seine Stimme nur richtig und gezielt einsetzen; eine Technik, die jeder erlernen kann.“ Sie hofft, mit ihrem Appell viele Frauen zu erreichen, denn sie hat es zum Ziel gemacht, möglichst viele weibliche „Barbershop Singer“ auszubilden und den Musikstil durch öffentliche Auftritte auf großen Bühnen der Algarve bekannter zu machen. Momentan reicht es aufgrund der geringen Mitgliederzahl nur für kleine Einlagen bei Charity-Events, z.B. beim Rotary Club oder dem holländischen Kirchenverein. Ursprünglich entstand der „Barbershop“-Gesang Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts in Amerika und wurde ausschließlich von Männern ausgeübt, die sich die Wartezeit beim Barbier mit improvisierten Gesängen vertrieben. Inzwischen ist er Teil der amerikanischen Musikkultur und hat auch viele Anhänger in Europa gefunden. Der Gesang besteht aus Obertönen und entsteht durch genaue Ab-

stimmung von Vokalen, Tonabständen und Lautstärke der Bass-, Bariton-, Lead- und Tenorstimmen. Durch spezielle Harmonieregelung und enge Sätze entstehen Klangreichtum und Volumen, die die bestechenden Merkmale der Musik bilden. Aber nicht nur der Gesang ist bemerkenswert, sondern auch die Darstellung: körperlicher Ausdruck durch Bewegung und Mimik spielen bei der ausschließlich a capella gesungenen Präsentation eine tragende Rolle. Während der Vorführung wird viel gestrahlt, gewippt und auch getanzt. Begeisterung strahlen auch Sylvys Damen aus, die bei den regelmäßigen Proben offensichtlich eine Menge Spaß und Freude haben. Dies bestätigt auch Sylvys Ehemann, das einzige männliche Gesicht in der Truppe. Er hat sich der Frauengruppe aus großer Leidenschaft zum Chorgesang angeschlossen und bildet nebenher mit seiner Frau und zwei weiteren Damen das Quartett “Cleftomania” Marius Müller “Bella A Capella” trifft sich jeden Dienstag um 19 Uhr zur Probe in einer wunderschönen Olivenöl-Kelterei in Moncarapacho. A “barbershop chorus” seeks members

ylvy Keenan, Emmy Wijsmann and Andrea Knöpfle are just 3 of the, to date, 13 female members of “Bella A Capella”, the one and only barbershop chorus in the Algarve. These women, all of different ages, are from England, Holland, Germany, Ireland and France, and live mostly in the Algarve. “Sadly, we don’t have enough members”, complains Sylvy who founded the chorus in 2008 with four other women and since then has been the musical director. The ladies are eagerly looking for new members and all agree that you don’t have to be a vocal talent to sing along with them. Sylvy believes that everyone has the potential, “you only have to use your voice in the correct way and at the right point, a technique that anyone can learn”. She hopes to reach many women with this point of view because her goal is to train lots of female “barbershop singers” so they can get better known in the Algarve with this style of music doing public performances on large stages. At the moment, the small number of members means that they are only suitable for doing short performances at charity events, such as the Rotary Club or the Dutch Church Association. Originally, the “barber shop” singing groups grew up in America at the end of the 19th century and were made up exclusively of men who filled in the waiting time at the barber’s with improvised songs; now it has become a part of American culture and has found its way to Europe where many choirs imitate this style. It is a harmony style of singing and is produced by exactly matching up vowels, pitch intervals and the volume of the bass, baritone, lead and tenor voices. The special harmony rules and narrow harmonic intervals produce a richness of sound

and volume which are the most characteristic features of this kind of music. However, it is not just the singing itself which is special, there’s also the performance: in this kind of “a cappella” singing, the whole physical expression, movement and facial expressions play a huge role and during the performance the singers smile, dance and sway all the time. You can see how enthusiastic Sylvy’s ladies are and they are guaranteed to have a lot of fun and joy during their regular rehearsals. This is confirmed by Sylvy’s husband, the only male figure in the group. It was his great passion for choral singing which led him to join the ladies’ group and, together with his wife and two other ladies, he is also part of the quartet “Cleftomania”. Der Schutz der Ria Formosa über die Jahre

as Lagunensystem der Ria Formosa ist ein ökologisches Paradies, das die Menschen seit jeher angezogen hat. Es existieren zahlreiche archäologische Beweise dafür, dass die natürlichen Ressourcen der Ria Formosa bereits zu prähistorischen Zeiten bis hin zum Römischen Reich intensiv erschlossen und genutzt wurden. Mesolithische Muschelhaufen, verfallene römische Fischbecken und natürlich die Städte, die an der Küste der Lagune entstanden sind, belegen den Reichtum an Ressourcen, der den Anwohnern das Überleben sicherte. Diese Situation änderte sich durch den Fall des Römischen Reiches. Mit dem Niedergang des römischen Mare Nostrum, welches sich über das Mittelmeer hinaus entlang der Atlantikküste bis nach Portugal erstreckte, geriet ganz Europa in Aufruhr. Instabilität und Haltlosigkeit verbreiteten sich in allen Ecken des ehemaligen Reiches. Zu dem Zeitpunkt, da die luxuriösen römischen Städte in der Lagune zu zerfallen begannen, verlor auch der Wirt-

schaftraum Ria Formosa seine Ordnung. Die folgenden archäologischen Daten zeigen, dass eine Reihe von Türmen entlang der Lagune errichtet wurden. Es gibt Anzeichen dafür, dass diese Türme nicht primär der Verteidigung, sondern vor allem der Beobachtung dienten. Gefahren, die der Lagune vom Meer aus drohten, mussten früh erkannt werden. Historische Dokumente erwähnen, dass während der Herrschaft Königs Dinis I eine Verteidigungslinie inklusive ergänzender Wachttürme errichtet wurde, um Schmuggel und Angriffe der Korsaren von Nordafrika zu verhindern. Später, in modernen Zeiten, wurden drei Festungen zum Schutz der Lagune erbaut. Bis heute stehen noch zwei von ihnen: eine in Cacela Velha und die andere außerhalb von Tavira. Die Lage der dritten Festung wurde auf einer der Inseln in der Nähe von Olhão festgestellt, direkt vor einem der Kanäle zwischen Ria und Meer. Während wir recht viel über diese Festungen und ihre umfangreichen Vertei-

digungssysteme wissen, umgeben die Türme noch immer viele Geheimnisse. Wer hat die ersten Türme erbaut und aus welchem Grund? Warum sind einige rund und andere viereckig? Wurden diese Türme nur in einer bestimmten Ära genutzt und instand gehalten und dann verlassen? Dies sind einige Fragen, die eine neue Ausstellung im Museum von Olhao zu beantworten versucht. Sie eröffnet am 15. November, dem “Tag des Meeres” - wir freuen uns auf Ihren Besuch.

Protecting the Ria Formosa through the ages

he lagoon system known as Ria Formosa is an ecological paradise that was always attractive to the wide diversity of people who roamed these wetlands. From pre-historic times all the way through to the Roman Empire, there is abundant archaeological evidence to show that these natural resources were explored and exploited intensively. From the Mesolithic shell mounds to the ruined Roman fish tanks and the towns which were settled on the shores of this lagoon, its richness proved essential to the survival of the inhabitants. This scenario changed drastically when the Roman Empire fell. With the end of the Roman “Mare Nostrum” which, in a sense, extended outside of the Mediterranean and along the Portuguese Atlantic coast, the whole of Europe was suddenly in turmoil and instability spread to all the corners of the former empire. But what happened to this ecological paradise in the south of Portugal? Apparently, the Ria Formosa was affected by this instability since, after the luxurious Roman towns

which traded freely throughout the lagoon fell into ruin, the next archaeological data shows that a number of towers had been constructed along the lagoon. There are indications that these towers were not of a purely defensive nature but more like watch towers to keep a lookout for any threats that might be entering the lagoon from the sea. Historical documents mention that during the reign of King Dinis I, already a Portuguese ruler, a line of defence, including the towers which make it up, had been set up to address an increase of smuggling and pirate attacks on the Algarve coast by Barbary pirates from the north of Africa. Later on, in modern times, three fortresses were built to protect the lagoon. Two of them still stand to this day, one in Cacela Velha and another on the outskirts of Tavira. A third fortress was located on one of the islands off Olhão, precisely in front of one of the channels between the sea and the Ria. However, while we do know more about the fortresses and their extensive defensive system, the towers remain a mystery. Who built the first towers and for what specific reason? Why are some of them round in shape and others quadrangular? Were these towers used and maintained during different periods or used in only one specific chronological era and then abandoned? These are some of the questions that an exhibition in Olhão’s city museum, which is dedicated to these defensive structures, will try to answer.
