Christmas in the Algarve has a global flair. Where many nationalities live together and even more come to spend holidays here, there are decorative and culinary delights from around the world for the festive season. And the way people celebrate is now a mixture of Portuguese traditions and ones which have been brought in. Portuguese literature contains many stories to do with Christmas. In them, the poets have almost always kept in enough truth to show that the festive time is not so much about the events, but rather about the atmosphere. Consequently, these narratives are rarely as magical and enchanted as the Christmas stories from other cultures. Despite all the differences: there, as here, the beginnings and farewells, the highlights and defeats of the outgoing year will be remembered with dignity. 2014 will bring new challenges; something we are really looking forward to. The Algarve Vida team would like to wish you a merry Christmas and a happy, healthy, prosperous New Year.

Weihnachten in der Algarve hat globales Flair. Wo viele Nationalitäten leben und noch mehr Ferien machen, gibt es Dekoratives und Kulinarisches aus aller Welt zum Fest. Und die Art zu feiern zeigt eine Mischung aus mitgebrachten Traditionen und portugiesischen Bräuchen. Die portugiesische Literatur kennt viele Geschichten rund um Weihnachten. In ihnen haben die Dichter fast immer soviel Wirklichkeit belassen, dass das Fest nicht in den Ereignissen lebt, sondern in der Atmosphäre. Diese Erzählungen sind deshalb selten so märchenhaft und verzaubert wie die Weihnachts-Histörchen aus anderen Kulturen. Bei allen Unterschieden: Hier wie dort bleiben die Anfänge und Abschiede, die Höhepunkte und Niederlagen des zu Ende gehenden Jahres in würdiger Erinnerung. 2014 bringt neue Herausforderungen, auf die wir uns freuen. Das Team von Algarve Vida wünscht Ihnen ein schönes Weihnachtsfest und ein gutes, gesundes, erfolgreiches Neues Jahr.

eihnachten ohne Weihnachtsbaum? „Ja, kein Problem. Aber ohne Krippe kann ich mir Weihnachten nicht vorstellen!“ Mit dieser Einstellung ist es nicht verwunderlich, dass Ernesto Pires aus Castro Marim der Initiator einer der größten Krippen Portugals und deswegen als „Der Krippenbauer“ bekannt ist. Zwischen 2003 und 2010 konnte seine Riesenkrippe im Kulturzentrum António Aleixo in Vila Real de Santo António besichtigt werden. Seitdem führt das Rathaus seine Tradition fort. Auch in diesem Jahr wird sie ab dem 6. Dezember zur weihnachtlichen Stimmung von Groß und Klein beitragen. Doch wie kam es, dass die Krippe des pensionierten Polizisten im Kulturzentrum ausgestellt wurde? Alles begann in seinem Haus in Castro Marim. Dort stellte Ernesto jedes Jahr zu Weihnachten, wie es schon in seinem Elternhaus Tradition war, eine Krippe auf. Zuerst war es eine gewöhnliche Weihnachtskrippe, wie viele sie in ihren Häusern haben, doch mit der Zeit wurde sie zu groß für das Wohnzimmer und musste in der Garage aufgestellt werden. Auch dort wuchs sie immer weiter, denn Ernesto kaufte immer neue Figuren, bis die Krippe fast die ganze Garage füllte. Das sprach sich schnell herum und Kinder sowie Erwachsene aus der ganzen Nachbarschaft kamen vorbei, um sein Werk zu bestaunen. Im Dezember 1998 ergab sich die Möglichkeit, die Krippe in der Kirche São Sebastião in Castro Marim aufzustellen. Ernesto erinnert sich noch: „Die Pfadfindergruppe, zu der meine Kinder gehörten, wollten eine Reise zum Wallfahrtsort Fátima unternehmen und sammelten dafür Geld. Doch auf den üblichen Wegen kam nicht viel zusammen“. Schließlich hatte Ernestos Frau Maria do Carmo die Idee, die Krippe zu Weihnachten in der Kirche aufzustellen und die Besucher um Spenden für die Reise der Kinder zu bitten. Die Erlaubnis wurde eingeholt und so kam es zur ersten öffentlichen Ausstellung. In den darauffolgenden Jahren stellte Ernesto weiterhin die Krippe in der Kirche von São Sebastião auf. Doch die Ausstellungsbedingungen waren nicht ideal.

Deshalb zögerte Ernesto nicht, als das Rathaus von Vila Real de Santo António ihn einlud, die Krippe im Kulturzen_trum António Aleixo aufzustellen. „Natürlich waren die Bewohner von Castro Marim damals enttäuscht, aber ich konnte das Angebot nicht ablehnen. Es sollte mir viel mehr Platz zur Verfügung stehen.“ Im ersten Jahr im Kulturzentrum nahm die Krippe eine Fläche von ca. 25 qm ein, im nächsten bereits 40 qm, um schließlich von 50 qm auf 70 qm zu wachsen. Ernesto verbrachte 23 Tage lang je 12 Stunden damit, die Krippe aufzubauen. Zirka 2.000 Figuren, sechs Tonnen Sand, 150 Kilogramm Steine, 60 Kubikmeter Moos und über 1.000 Nägel wurden dafür benötigt - vor allem aber viel Geduld und Liebe. Die Figuren hat Ernesto Pires im Laufe der Jahre gesammelt. Den größten Teil kaufte er auf Märkten und bei Festen in den spanischen Nachbarorten. Jedes Jahr gab er ungefähr 200 Euro für neue Figuren aus. Manchmal auch mehr, denn zu seiner Sammlung zählen Kunstwerke, die 70 Euro kosten; etwa ein mechanischer Töpfer, der mit seinem Fuß immer wieder ein Pedal tritt und die Drehscheibe in Bewegung setzt. Mit viel Liebe arrangierte er alles nach seinem eigenen Plan. Ernesto Pires fing an einer bestimmten Stelle mit dem Christkind, Maria und Josef an und platzierte die anderen Figuren dann rundherum. Der Aufbau folgte logischen Regeln: „Die Wüste mit den Kamelen und den arabischen Häusern befand sich natürlich nicht direkt neben den grünen Weiden mit den Hirten und der Bäcker nicht mitten auf einem Hügel; und der Markt fand nicht in der Wüste statt.“ Das, was man normalerweise unter Krippe versteht, war nur ein kleiner Teil von Ernesto Pires Gesamtwerk. Ein wenig traurig erzählt Ernesto Pires, dass manche Leute die Krippe kritisierten. „Die Figuren seien nicht alle gleich groß und aus unterschiedlichem Material. Sie vergaßen aber, dass es meine private Krippe war, mit Figuren, die ich selbst gesammelt habe und die mir zum Teil geschenkt wurden“. Wesentlich öfter jedoch bekam er Lob zu hören. Stolz zeigt er seine Gästebücher; ein Buch pro Ausstellungsjahr. Dort sind Komplimente von Besuchern unterschiedlichster Nationalitäten zu lesen; von Kindern, die sich für die schöne Krippe bedanken und schreiben, sie werden zu Hause auch eine aufstellen, und von Erwachsenen, die versichern, nie zuvor eine so imposante Krippe gesehen zu haben. Ernesto war einer der letzten carolas; Leute, die kostenlos ihre Zeit opfern, um etwas für die Gemeinde zu organisieren. Die einzige Unterstützung, die er bekam, waren die kleinen Spenden, die die Besucher in den Teich und den Fluss der Krippe warfen. Von diesem Geld kaufte er wiederum neue Figuren. 2010 baute er zum letzten Mal seine Krippe in Vila Real de Santo António auf. Seitdem sind Angestellte des Rathauses für den Aufbau zuständig. Mittlerweile wurde die Krippe nochmals stark erweitert: Auf nunmehr 200 qm sind 3.500 Figuren aufgestellt. Die Struktur besteht u.a. aus 18 Tonnen Sand, 200 Kilogramm Steinen, 2.500 Kilogramm Kork, 130 Kubikmetern Moos und über 2.000 Nägeln. Einen Monat brauchen Augusto Rosa und Teresa Marques sowie drei weitere Helfer, um die Krippe aufzustellen. Aber es lohnt sich. Alleine am Tag der Eröffnung wird die Krippe stets von etwa 3.000 Menschen besucht. Bis zum letzten Ausstellungstag sind es um die 35.000 Besucher. Anabela Gaspar

hristmas without a Christmas tree? “Yes, no problem. But Christmas without a crib? Impossible!” Having this opinion, it is not surprising that Ernesto Pires from Castro Marim is the man behind one of Portugal’s largest cribs and consequently is known as “the crib builder”. From 2003 to 2010 it was possible to visit his giant nativity scene at the Cultural Centre António Aleixo in Vila Real de Santo António. Since then the town hall has carried on this tradition. This year too, it will be contributing to the

Christmas atmosphere for young and old from 6th December. But how did it come about that the retired policemen’s crib was on show at the Cultural Centre? It all began at his house in Castro Marim. There, every year, Ernesto used to set up a crib for Christmas, as had been the custom in his parents’ home. First it was an ordinary Christmas crib, just as many people have in their homes, but over time it got too big for the living room and had to be moved to the garage. Even there it continued to grow because Ernesto was always buying new figures, until the point came where the crib almost filled the whole garage. Word spread quickly, and children and adults from all over the neighbourhood came by to admire his work. In December 1998, the opportunity arose to set up the crib in the church of São Sebastião in Castro Marim. Ernesto recalls: “the scout group, which my own children were in, wanted to make a trip to the Shrine of Fátima and were collecting money for it. But the normal channels didn’t bring in very much”. Then Ernesto‘s wife, Maria do Carmo, had the idea of setting up the crib in the church at Christmas and asking visitors to make a donation for the children’s journey. Permission was given and that became the first public exhibition. In the following years, Ernesto continued to set up the crib in the church of São Sebastião. But it was still not the ideal place to exhibit it. So, when the city council of Vila Real de Santo António invited him to exhibit his crib at the Cultural Centre, Ernesto did not hesitate for a moment. “Of course the inhabitants of Castro Marim were very disappointed, but I could not refuse the offer. It would give me much more space to play with”. In the first year at the Cultural Centre, the crib took up an area of about 25 m², then in the next year 40 m², and eventually it went on to grow from 50 m² to 70 m². It It used to take Ernesto 12 hours a day for 23 days to get the crib done. Approximately 2,000 figures, six tons of sand, 150 kg bricks, 60 cubic meters of moss and over 1,000 nails were needed for it – and, most importantly, a lot of patience and love. Ernesto Pires had collected the figures during the course of the year. He bought most of them at markets and festivals in the neighbouring Spanish villages. Every year he spent around 200 euro for new figures. And sometimes even more, for his collection includes some works of art which cost 70 euros; for example a mechanical potter who presses

a pedal with his foot again and again and sets his potter’s wheel in motion. With loving care he would arrange everything according to his own plan. Ernesto Pires used to begin with the baby Jesus, Mary and Joseph at a certain position, and then place the other characters around them. The construction followed logical rules. “The desert with the camels and the Arab houses, of course, was not right next to the green pastures where the shepherds were and the baker is not at the top of a hill, and the market was not in the desert”. What you normally think of as a crib was only a small part of Ernesto Pires’ complete work. Farmers, potters and bakers could all be seen working away at their jobs. The crib looked different every year, because Ernesto always changed the figures around and added new characters. A little sadly, Ernesto Pires explained that some people criticised the crib. “The figures are not all the same size and they are made of different materials. They were forgetting that this was my private crib with figures which I had bought myself and partly which people had given me as a present”. But far more often he would be praised for his efforts. He proudly shows off his books of signatures, one book for each year. There are compliments from visitors of different nationalities, from children who are grateful for the beautiful nativity scene and write that they will now set one up at home, and from adults who admit that they have never seen such impressive crib. Ernesto was one of the last Carolas, people who give up their free time to organise something for the community. The only support he got was from the small donations that visitors threw into the pond and the river in the crib. He then used this money to buy new figures. In 2010, he set up his crib in Vila Real de Santo António for the last time. Since then the work has been done by employees of the town hall. In the meantime, the crib has been greatly extended: now, over an area of 200 m², 3,500 figures are set up. The structure includes 18 tons of sand, 200 kg stones, 2,500 kg cork, 130 cubic meters of moss and over 2,000 nails. Augusto Rosa and Teresa Marques and three other helpers now need a month to set up the crib. But it is worth it. Just on the opening day of the crib, there are some 3,000 people who come to visit it. By the last day of the exhibition around 35,000 visitors will have been there.

KRIPPEN AUS DER NATUR Weihnachten wird nicht überall auf der Welt gefeiert, und auch nicht überall gleich. Jedes Land und selbst jede Region hat eigene Traditionen. So auch die Algarve

icht mehr in allen Häusern, doch in Kirchen, auf Märkten, in Schulen, Bibliotheken und Hotelfoyers gehört sie dazu: Die Krippe, eines der wenigen ursprünglich christlichen Schmuckstücke des Weihnachtsfestes. In der portugiesischen Sprache werden das Bettchen des Neugeborenen und seine Umgebung als presépio bezeichnet. Das Wort ist lateinischen Ursprungs und steht für „Krippe“ oder „Stall“, jedoch auch für „Bienenkorb“. Das kommt vielleicht daher, dass die Ehrung des Christkinds in Portugal und ganz besonders in der Algarve seit jeher mit dem verbunden wird, was die Natur zur Verfügung stellt: Die Figuren sind aus Holz geschnitzt oder aus Ton geformt. Auch moderne Modelle aus recycelten Materialien spielen letztlich auf ursprüngliche Ressourcen an. Kork, Moos und Steine gehören bei der Ausstattung des algarvischen Krippenbaus ebenso dazu wie Orangen und Keimlinge, die am 8. Dezember, einem religiösen Feiertag, in kleinen Blumentöpfen gesät werden und während des Monats sprießen und grünen und so sinnbildlich das wachsende neue Leben von Mensch und Natur darstellen. Saattöpfchen und Orangen schmücken dann auf bestickten Tüchern einen treppenförmigen Altar, auf dessen oberster Stufe das Christkind steht. Diese Krippen symbolisieren auch die Nahrung der Algarve, die immer eine arme Region war und deren Bewohner sich früher nur von dem versorgen konnten, was sie auf ihrem Land erwirtschaften oder aus den Gewässern des

Landstrichs schöpften. Diese Algarve-typischen Saatgutkrippen, die presépios serrenhos aus dem Hinterland, dem barrocal, widerstehen bis heute der Übermacht aus Kunststoff gefertigter und mit Technik ausgestatteter Krippen anderer portugiesischer Regionen. Saatgutkrippen stehen in Kirchen, manchmal Seite an Seite mit der traditionellen Krippe, die auf Franz von Assisi und das Jahr 1223 zurückgeht und in der das Christkind in einer Futterkrippe liegt. Eine andere Darstellung der Weihnachtsgeschichte, die presépio falante (sprechende Krippe) aus dem Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts mit animierten Figuren und Musik ist heute besonders auf der Insel Madeira verbreitet. Im katholischen, aber säkulär lebenden Portugal wurde die Weihnachtskrippe in den vergangenen Jahren als Objekt heimatkundlicher Kunst wiederentdeckt: Immer häufiger steht sie an öffentlichen Plätzen; Schulen veranstalten Wettbewerbe um den Bau des schönsten Modells. Die größte Krippe des Landes wird alljährlich in der Lissabonner Kathedrale, der Sé, aufgebaut. Zwischen Weihnachten und dem Tag der Heiligen Drei Könige war es in der Algarve Sitte, von Haus zu Haus zu gehen und vor den aufgestellten Krippen zu singen. Diese Chöre nennt man charolas. Bei ihren Prozessionen wurde stets eine Figur des Christuskindes mitgeführt. Miriam Meyer

o longer just in every home, but also now in churches, markets, schools, libraries and hotel foyers, they have to have one: a crib, one of the few original Christian decorations of the Christmas period. In the Portuguese language, the crib of the newborn with all its surroundings is known as presépio. The word is of Latin origin and means “manger” or “stable”, but also “beehive”. This is perhaps because the worship of the baby Jesus in Portugal and especially in the Algarve has always been connected with what nature makes available. The figures are carved from wood or moulded in clay. Even more modern models made from recycled materials ultimately allude to the original resources. Cork, moss and stones belong to the materials used for the Algarve‘s nativity scenes, just as do oranges and seedlings which, on the religious holiday on 8th December, are sown in small pots and sprout green shoots during the month, symbolically representing the growing new life of man and nature. used to decorate a stepped altar, on the top level of which is the baby Jesus. These cribs also symbolise the food of the Algarve, always a poor region, and its inhabitants were only able to provide what they could grow on their land themselves or caught from the waters of the land. These seed nativity cribs, so typical of the Algarve, the presépios serrenhos from the hinterland, the barrocal, all of these are still able to resist the superior power of the cribs manufactured from plastic and equipped with technology which you find in other Portuguese regions. Seed cribs can be found in churches, sometimes side by side with the traditional cribs which go back to Francis of Assisi and the year 1223 and which have the baby Jesus lying in a manger. Another representation of the Christmas story, the presépio falante (speaking crib) from the end of the 18th century with animated characters and music is today especially common on the island of Madeira. In Catholic Portugal where people’s lives are secular, the nativity scene has been rediscovered in recent years as an object of local historical art. More and more often you find them in public places; schools organise competitions for the construction of the most beautiful model. The largest nativity scene in the country is set up annually in the Lisbon Cathedral, the Sé. Between Christmas and Epiphany, it was customary in the Algarve to go from house to house and sing in front of the cribs people had made. These choirs are called charolas. Kuriosität Einige der Jesus-Figuren haben ein Band um den Hals oder die Hüfte. Dabei handelt es sich nicht um eine Verzierung, sondern um ein „Folterwerkzeug“. Obwohl die Kirche es streng verbot, war es ein alter Brauch, an den heiligen Figuren Bändern zu befestigen, wenn sie um ein Wunder gebeten wurden. Bis der Wunsch in Erfüllung ging, blieb das Band an der Hüfte des Heiligen befestigt. Das Band um den Hals diente dazu, die Figuren in einen Brunnen über der Wasseroberfläche zu hängen. Sollten die Wünsche nicht erfüllt werden, schwor das Volk, die Figuren ins Wasser fallen zu lassen.

m 19. Jahrhundert war die Bevölkerung der Ostalgarve ein sehr religiöses Volk. Die meisten Familien hatten im Eingangsbereich ihres Hauses eine Jesus-Figur auf einer Truhe stehen. Dies war der Altar, vor dem gebetet wurde, denn die Kirchen lagen meistens entfernt, und es gab kaum Transportmittel. Es entsprach dem Brauch, dass Eltern ihren Kindern zur Hochzeit eine solche Figur für das neue Zuhause schenkten, die dann zu Weihnachten auf die typischen Krippen gestellt wurde (s. KrippenArtikel in dieser Ausgabe). Die Pinta Santos („heilige Maler“) waren meistens Bauern, Fischer oder Zimmermänner, die ihre Freizeit mit der Herstellung dieser Figuren verbrachten und so ein wenig Geld dazuverdienten, um ihre Familien im Winter zu ernähren. Auch ältere oder kranke Männer bereiteten Freunden und Angehörigen gerne eine Freude mit den christlichen Puppen. Fast alle dieser Volkskünstler stammten aus Santa Catarina da Fonte Bispo im Bezirk Tavira. Der Bauer José Martins Murteira gilt als bekanntester Pinta Santos. Zuerst widmete er dem Hobby nur seine Freizeit, doch er war äußerst kreativ und seine Figuren so beliebt, dass er bald nur noch als Pinta Santos tätigt war. Leute aus der ganzen Algarve kauften seine Statuetten. Doch „Zé da Murteira“, wie man ihn nannte, fertigte nicht nur Figuren; er nähte und bestickte auch deren Kleidungsstücke. Mehr als jeder anderer trug dieser Pinta Santos durch die Herstellung seiner Figuren zur Verehrung von Jesus Christus und somit zur Verbreitung des Christentums in der Region bei. Ein weiterer Handwerker, der diese Figuren in seiner Freizeit fabrizierte, hieß Faustino José Bernardo. Seine Jesus-Kinder gelten als die kunstvollsten der ganzen Ostalgarve; ein besonderes Kennzeichen seiner Werke besteht darin, dass die Figuren immer auf einem Kissen stehen. Die Standbilder von Ventura das Neves sind ebenfalls sehr prägnant: Da er sie nur als Freizeitbeschäftigung im hohen Alter herstellte, nahm er sich die Freiheit, jedem Jesus-Kind das Antlitz eines alten Mannes zu geben. Sicher existierten weit mehr dieser Puppenhersteller, denn die Zuordnung der Figuren, die über Generationen hinweg ohne Namensnennung weitervererbt wurden, ist schwierig. Ab 1920 starb die Kunst aus. Im Trachtenmuseum von São Brás de Alportel gibt es jedoch bis heute eine Sammlung dieser „Jesus-Kind-Figuren“. Jedes Jahr zu Weihnachten werden einige mit den Krippen ausgestellt. Anabela Gaspar

THE STORY OF THE

JESUS FIGURES

You can find nativity scene cribs and figures for sale as early as the beginning of October. In the Algarve of the 19th century, these Christian symbols were made by the Pinta Santos.

n the 19th century, the population of the Eastern Algarve were very religious people. Most families would have a Jesus figure standing on a chest in the entrance to their houses. This was the altar where they prayed; the churches were mostly too far away and there was hardly any transport. This followed the custom of parents giving their children such a figure for their new homes at their weddings; it would then be set up in the typical Christmas cribs (see the article about cribs in this issue). The Pinta Santos (“sacred painters“) were mostly farmers, fishermen or carpenters who spent their free time making these figures and so earn a little money to feed their families during the winter. Even men who were elderly or sick would give these Christian dolls as a gift to friends and family. Almost all of these folk craftsmen came from Santa Catarina da Fonte Bispo in the district of Tavira. The farmer José Martins Murteira is considered the most famous of these Pinta Santos. At first, he only devoted his free time to the hobby, but he was extremely creative and his characters so popular that he soon became a fulltime Pinta Santos. People from all over the Algarve bought his statues. How-

ever, “Zé da Murteira”, as they called him, not only made figures, he sewed and embroidered the clothes for them too. With the manufacturing of his figures, this Pinta Santos contributed more than any other to the worship of Jesus Christ and, consequently, to the spread of Christianity in the region. Another craftsman who made these figures in his spare time was called Faustino José Bernardo. His figures of baby Jesus are considered the most artistic in the whole of eastern Algarve; a special feature of his work is that the characters are always on a pillow. Ventura das Neves’ figures are also very pithy: as he was only making them as a leisure activity in his old age, he took the liberty of giving every baby Jesus the face of an old man. There were certainly a lot more of these figure makers but it is difficult to attribute to anyone the unsigned figures which have been passed down through generations. From 1920, this kind of art died out. However, in the Costume Museum in São Brás de Alportel, there is a collection of these “baby Jesus figures”. Curiosity Some of the Jesus figures have a ribbon around the neck or waist. This is not an ornament, but an “instrument of torture”. Although strictly prohibited by the church, it was an old custom to attach these ribbons to the holy figures when people were asking them for a miracle. Until the wish was granted, the ribbon remained fixed around the hips of the holy figure. The ribbon around the neck was there so they could hang the figures down a well above the water surface. The people would vow to drop the figure into the water, if their wishes were not granted.

TAVIRAS STILLER CHARME Dreißig Gotteshäuser lassen sich in Tavira zählen. Ihre Türme und Tore sind aus dem Stadt- und Landschaftsbild nicht wegzudenken. Aber sie bestimmen es nicht. Vielmehr vibriert in Tavira ein ganzes Orchester aus Bauwerken mit pagodenhaften Dächern, Gassen, lauschigen Plätzen, Treppen, Brücken, hoch aufragenden Bäumen und pastellfarbigen Spiegelungen im Fluss

auptmerkmal dieser alten Hafenstadt ist der von Ebbe und Flut bestimmte Rio Gilão. Gleich hinter dem Ortskern mündet dieser Fluss in einem Riesennetz aus Wasserläufen, die wie Venen, dicke und dünne, die Ria durchziehen. Schon die Phönizier, dann die Römer, schätzten diesen von Felsen und Strömungen unbehelligten Hafenort. Und Piraten konnten hier nicht überfallartig plündern – man hätte sie schon von weitem gesichtet. Umso reibungsloser lief das alltägliche Geschäft ab, und das hieß: Aus dem Hinterland Güter herkarren. Silber, Kupfer, Tierhäute, Hölzer, Holzkohle. Und natürlich gab es massenhaft Fische, auch getrocknete und in Salz eingelegte, für die ewig hungrigen Seefahrer. In Balsa beim heutigen Pedras d´El Rei gab es eine zweite römische Siedlung an der Straße Faro – Castro Marim. Ernsthafte archäologische Studien wurden leider nie betrieben. Sal, das reichste Gut Das wichtigste Handelsgut war schon seit Vorzeiten das Salz (sal) aus Tavira. Abgetrennte Ria-Flächen werden geschwemmt, der Zulauf dann gesperrt. Das Meerwasser verdunstet, eine rosarot schimmernde Kruste pursten Salzes bleibt zurück. Wer einmal davon probiert hat, wird sich kaum mit einem anderen Salz zufrieden geben... Von Tavira aus wurden die kostbaren Kristalle bis nach Rom exportiert, später in das gesamte portugiesische Imperium. Ein gewisser Wohlstand war die Folge. Stadtvillen entstanden, noch mehr Kirchen und Klöster, die ihre Orientierung mit dem Altar zum Osten hin und mit den Glocken zum Rio Gilão hatten, an dessen Ufer die Menschen sich trafen. Gewonnen, zerronnen Im 16. Jahrhundert war – ganz unter den Vorzeichen einer starken Seefahrernation, die im Übrigen von hier aus ihren ersten Brückenkopf in Afrika, in Ceuta anno 1415 eingenommen hatte – aus dem Hafenstädtchen eine kleine Metropole geworden. Damals nahm sie jene Gesichtszüge an, die ihr heute noch zueigen sind. Dann kam das Jahr 1645. Ankernde Seefahrer hatten die Pest an Bord. Über die Hälfte der Bevölkerung wurde angesteckt und binnen weniger Monate weggerafft. Ein Unglück kommt selten allein: Jetzt versandete auch noch der Rio. Selbst bei Flut wurde die Hafenzufahrt unbrauchbar für große Gefährte. Schließlich das rabenschwarze Jahr 1755: Das größte Erdbeben Europas zerstörte am 1. November binnen weniger Sekunden auch in Tavira die meisten Gebäude. Die hübsche, die edle, unpompös reiche Stadt lag in Schutt und Asche. t

TRAVEL Davon erholte sie sich nie. Vom zerronnenen Reichtum und der prächtigen Vergangenheit zehren wehmütige Erinnerungen und mit ihnen ein ungebrochener Stolz, dem bröckelnder Putz nichts anhaben kann. Ja, er bröckelt heute wie morgen und gestern, leise, unhörbar, unsichtbar; er häuft sich neben dem Blütenstaub der Stadtbäume. Er legt sich auch ab im Gemüt der Menschen, in ihren Augen, ihren Bewegungen. Nirgendwo an der Algarve lässt sich die vielzitierte Saudade so hautnah und melancholisch aufspüren wie in Tavira. Rosinen im Kuchen Gleich am Rio breitet sich das Herzstück des Städtchens aus: Die Praça da República und etwas südlich davon die ehemalige Markthalle, heute ein beliebter Treffpunkt mit Cafés und Läden. Daneben überspannt eine ursprünglich römische Brücke den Fluss. Hier gelangt man in den heimeligen Ostteil von Tavira. Den besten Überblick über Innenstadt und Umgebung gewinnt der Besucher von der Burg im Westteil aus, zu der eine Gasse hoch führt. Unterwegs passiert man eine der schönsten städtischen Kunstgalerien der Algarve: Palácio da Galeria. Ganz in der Nähe kommt man nicht umhin, vor dem Portal der Misericórdia-Kirche die Augen und Sinne zu öffnen, um einen harmonisch gelungenen Kirchenbau wahrzunehmen, der im Jahr 1541 begonnen wurde. Er birgt wunderbare manuelinische, aber auch klassizistische Elemente, stellt ein Glanzstück bildhauerischen Schaffens dar. Sehenswert sind auch die Azulejos im Innenraum. Oben an der Stadtmauer angekommen, fällt der Blick auf eine Landschaft aus geschwungenen Dächern, auf die prächtigen Häuser, die den Rio säumen und auf den niemals hektischen Stadtbetrieb.

Wer liegt hier begraben? Ein Stück weiter hügelan auf dem Weg zur ursprünglich sarazenischen Burganlage (ausgebaut von König Dinis zwischen 1261-1325) ragt die Kirche Santa Maria do Castelo dort auf, wo früher eine Moschee gestanden hatte. Das gotische Portal mit seinen floralen Säulenkopfstücken ist ein Meisterwerk; daneben finden sich eine Reihe weiterer gotischer Elemente in den Spitzbogenfenstern oder dem Wasserspeier. Das Kircheninnere mit seinen drei Schiffen birgt an der linken Wand der Hauptkapelle das Grab jener sieben Ritter des Santiago-Ordens, die von maurischen Soldaten meuchlings ermordet wurden; unter ihnen auch der Großmeister des Ordens, Paio Peres Correia. Im spanischen Kloster Santa Maria de Tentúdia gibt es allerdings eine weitere Grabstätte dieses Ritter-Führers. Niemand weiß de facto, wo seine Gebeine begraben liegen. Sein Tod hatte in der Algarve jedenfalls weitreichende Folgen: Nachdem die Ritter Tavira besetzt hatten, zogen sie, von Rache angetrieben, von hier aus weiter, nahmen das nahe Cacela ein, dann binnen weniger Wochen Faro, Albufeira, Porches, Silves, Loulé und Aljezur. Jetzt hatte die Reconquista auch die südwestlichste Provinz der Iberischen Halbinsel von der Fremdherrschaft befreit. Kosmopolitisch Diese Rückeroberung geschah während der Herrschaft von Dom Afonso III. Weitsichtig, wie dieser König war, gestattete er den Mauren den Verbleib im Land – anders als in Spanien, wo man sie als teuflische Ungläubige nach Nordafrika verjagte oder tötete. In diesem Zusammenhang lohnt es sich daran zu erinnern, dass am portugiesischen Hof nicht nur Christen das Sagen hatten. Verwalter, Finanzchefs, engste Berater oder Ärzte und Astrologen, sie waren Juden oder Araber und genossen im Land der Toleranz höchstes Ansehen. Das Resultat dieser Politik ist eine Integration, ein genetisches Puzzle, das sich in fast jedem Gesicht eines Algárvios abzeichnet. Von Ur-Iberischem zu Römischem bis Westgotischem, von Maurisch-Arabischem bis zum Resultat von Begegnungen in einer neu entdeckten Welt – die Vergangenheit bleibt in der Gegenwart der Menschen lebendig, ob sie es wollen oder nicht. Das Ende der fast ein halbes Jahrtausend währenden maurischen Epoche brachte glücklicherweise keinen Einschnitt in dieser Entwicklung, die in Europa einzigartig dasteht, aber nicht gewürdigt wird. Tummelplatz auch für Nackte Heute erfreut sich Tavira eines neuen Aufschwungs - durch Tourismus. Er hat nicht die Züge und Begleiterscheinungen wie zum Beispiel in Albufeira; ist lässiger, ist individuell ausgerichtet. Neue Großprojekte, wie das zu einem Luxus-

hotel umfunktionierte Dörfchen für Thunfischer oder die neuen Golfplätze bringen Zulauf, aber sie schwappen nicht flutartig über das Städtchen hinweg. Taviras Charme leidet nicht. Und weil der Küstenstrich vor der Haustür lange Strände bietet, verläuft sich der Betrieb zwischen Barril, Santa Luzia, Conceição und Cabanas. Für Sonnenhungrige ist die Ilha de Tavira ein wahrer Segen. Hinüber zu dieser fast zehn Kilometer langen Insel kommt man mit einem Fährboot, das in Quatro Águas ablegt. Schon die wenige Minuten andauernde Schaukelei zum anderen Ufer ist ein Vergnügen. Drüben angekommen, kann man am Atlantik oder an der Lagune längs wandern, Muscheln sammeln, im Sand liegen, davon segeln in die Seele hinein und vieles fallen lassen. Ach ja: Auf der Ilha findet sich außerdem einer der wenigen offiziellen Nacktbadestrände der Algarve, obwohl man an keinem Strand hierzulande die Dinge kleinlich genau nimmt. Tavira hat ein herrliches Hinterland Dies muss bei so viel Strand und Küste betont werden. Santa Catarina da Fonte de Bispo ist jedem ein Begriff, der sich mit Hausbau beschäftigt – die vielgerühmten ladrilhos kommen von hier. Immer noch werden diese über 15 Millimeter dicken Lehmziegel von Hand geformt. Auch canutas, jene urspünglich römischen Dachziegel, werden hier gefertigt. Weiter nördlich beginnen die schier unendlichen Waldgebiete der Serra de Caldeirão, einem von Hügeln durchrollten, dünn besiedelten Raum. Leider fielen weite Teile davon den Waldbränden der letzten Jahre zum Opfer. Der Winter mit seinen Regenfällen hat schon begonnen, den verbrannten Flächen sprießendes Grün beizuzaubern. Wer das Winterwasser in Fülle erleben will, kommt nicht umhin, nach Moinhos da Rocha zu fahren. Im Tal des Rio Gilão – er heißt ab dem Ortsrand von Tavira Rio Séqua – gelangt man nach acht Kilometern zu einem kleinen Wasserfall mit Teich. Zum Schwimmen ist er bestens geeignet. Lässt man erst das stürzende Wasser auf den Rücken prasseln, kommt ungeheure Lebenslust auf. Versprochen. Rolf Osang

THE QUIET CHARM OF TAVIRA Thirty houses of worship can be found in Tavira. Their towers and gates form an indispensable part of the image of the city and countryside. But they do not set the tone. In fact, in Tavira, there is a whole orchestra of buildings vibrating with pagoda-like roofs, streets, cosy squares, stairs, bridges, towering trees and pastel-coloured reflections in the river.

he main feature of this ancient harbour town is the Rio Gilão, shaped by the ebb and flow of the tide. Just behind the centre of town, this river opens into a giant network of watercourses which criss-cross the estuary like veins, thick and thin. Back in the time of the Phoenicians, and then the Romans, they appreciated this harbour which was free of rocks and currents. Nor could pirates come here looting in surprise attacks - they would have been spotted from afar. So, the everyday business was carried out without trouble and this meant: goods would be transported in from the hinterland. Silver, copper, animal skins, wood, charcoal. And, of course, there were masses of fish, some dried and pickled in salt too, for the ever-hungry sailors. In Balsa, at today’s Pedras d’El Rei, there was a second Roman settlement on the Faro - Castro Marim road. Sadly, no serious archaeological studies have ever been t undertaken here.

Salt, white gold Since prehistoric times, the most important commodity has been the salt (sal) from Tavira. Separate areas of the Ria are flooded, then the inlets are blocked off. The sea water evaporates and a pink shimmering crust of the purest salt remains. Anyone who has ever tasted it will almost certainly never be content with a different salt .... From Tavira, the precious crystals were exported as far as Rome, and later over the entire Portuguese Empire. The consequence of this was a certain prosperity. Villas grew up in the town, even more churches and monasteries which had their altars oriented to the east and their bells to the Rio Gilão on whose banks the people would meet. You win some, you lose some In the 16th century - completely under the aegis of a strong maritime nation, which incidentally from here had captured its first beachhead in Africa, in Ceuta in 1415 - the harbour town had turned into a small city. At that time, it took on all those features that are still inherent today. Then the year 1645 came along. Some sailors at anchor had the plague on board. About half of the population was infected and carried off within a few months. It never rains, but it pours: the Rio now got sanded up. Even at high tide, the harbour entrance could not be used by large vessels. Finally, their darkest hour in 1755: on 1st November, the largest ever earthquake in Europe also destroyed most of the buildings in Tavira in just a few seconds. The beautiful, the noble, unpretentiously rich city now lay in ruins. And it never recovered. Wistful memories of lost wealth and the magnificent past still live on and with them an unbroken pride which the crumbling plaster can not take away. Yes, it is crumbling today and tomorrow and was yesterday too, quietly, inaudibly, invisibly, forming little heaps next to the

pollen from the town’s trees. It also gets into the minds of men, into their eyes, their movements. Nowhere else in the Algarve can the much-cited Saudade be observed in such a close up and melancholic way as in Tavira. Raisins in cakes Right on the Rio, the heart of the town spreads itself out: the Praça da República and a little south of there the former market hall, now a popular meeting place, with cafes and shops. Next to it, a bridge of Roman origin straddles the river. This leads to the homely eastern part of Tavira. Visitors get the best overview of the town centre and the surrounding area from the castle in the western part of town; an alley leads up to it. On the way, you pass one of the finest municipal art galleries in the Algarve: Palácio da Galeria. Right nearby you cannot avoid having your eyes and senses opened by the portal of the Misericordia church, and that lets you take in the successful harmony of this church, which was started in 1541. It contains wonderful Manueline elements, but also classical ones, representing an outstanding example of sculptural work. The Azulejos in the interior are also well worth seeing. When you arrive at the top of the city walls, the view you have is of a landscape of curved roofs, of the stately homes that line the Rio and of the never too busy town utilities. Who lies buried here? A little further up the hill on the way to the original Saracen castle (built by King Dinis between 1261-1325), the church of Santa Maria do Castelo rises up on the spot where formerly a mosque had stood. The gothic portal, with its floral column head pieces, is a masterpiece; in addition to this there are a number of other gothic elements such as the lancet windows or the gargoyles. Inside the church, with its three naves, in the left-hand wall of the main chapel you find the grave of the seven knights of the Order of Santiago who were treacherously murdered by Moorish soldiers; among them the Grand Master of the Order, Paio Peres Correia. In the Spanish monastery of Santa Maria de Tentudia, there is, however, another tomb of this leader of knights. No one really knows where his bones lie buried. Nevertheless, in the Algarve, his death had wide-reaching consequences. After the knights had occupied Tavira, they moved on, driven by vengeance, from here, captured nearby Cacela, then within a few weeks Faro, Albufeira, Porches, Silves, Loulé and Aljezur. With that, the Reconquista had liberated the south-westernmost province of the Iberian Peninsula from foreign rule. Cosmopolitan This reconquest happened during the reign of Dom Afonso III. main in the country - unlike in Spain, where they were chased away as devilish unbelievers to North Africa or killed. In this context, it is worthwhile to remember that at the Portuguese court not only the Christians had a say. Administrators, financers, the closest advisers or doctors and astrologers, they could be Jews or Arabs and enjoyed the highest reputation in this land of tolerance. The result of this policy is a kind of integration, a genetic puzzle that is evident in almost every native Algarve face. From ancient Iberian to Roman and Visigoth, Moorish-Arabian and on up to what resulted from encounters in a newly discovered world - the past remains alive in the present of the people there, whether they want it or not. Fortunately, this development was not halted by the end of the nearly half a millennium-long Muslim era, which in Europe is unique, but not recognised. Playground for nudists too Today, Tavira is enjoying a new upturn in fortune – thanks to tourism. It does not have the features and side-effects as in Albufeira, for example; it is more casual, to suit the individual. New major projects, such as converting a village of tuna fishermen into a luxury hotel or the new golf courses, are bringing in business, but they are not spilling across the town like a flood. The charm of Tavira is not suffering. And because the coastline offers long beaches right on your doorstep, tourism ranges between Barril, Santa Luzia, Cabanas and Conceicao. For sun worshipers the Ilha de Tavira is a true blessing. To get over to this almost ten-kilometre long island, you get a ferry boat which sails from Quatro Águas.

Even the constant rocking of the boat for the few minutes to the other side is a pleasure. Once you have arrived, you can go hiking along the Atlantic or the lagoon, collect mussels, lie in the sand, sail away into your soul and forget everything else. Oh yes: on the Ilha there is also one of the few official nudist beaches in the Algarve, although on the beaches in this country, no one really keeps exactly to the rules. Tavira has a magnificent hinterland Amidst so much about beaches and coast, this also has to be emphasised. Santa Catarina da Fonte de Bispo is known by everyone who deals with home construction - the muchvaunted ladrilhos come from here. These 15-millimeter-thick adobe bricks are still moulded by hand. Canutas, those roof tiles of Roman origin, are also manufactured here. Further north the endless forest areas of the Serra de Caldeirão begin, a sparsely populated area with rolling hills. Unfortunately, large parts of this area fell victim to the forest fires of recent years. The winter, with its rain, has already begun to conjure up a burgeoning green in the burned areas, as if by magic. If you want to experience the winter water in abundance, you simply have to drive to Moinhos da Rocha. In the valley of the Rio Gilão – it is called this from the outskirts of Tavira Rio Sequa - after eight kilometres, you come to a small waterfall and pond. This is perfect for swimming. Just by letting the splashing water patter on your back, you get a tremendous zest for life. And that is a promise. Rolf Osang

er Dezember ist ein Monat der Düfte. Nicht der schwere Hauch von Sommerrosen oder das intensive Aroma herbstlicher Trompetenblüten steigt in die Nase; es duftet nach Äpfeln, Mandeln und Kastanien. Auch Mandarinen, Orangen und andere Zitrusfrüchte, frisch oder kandiert fügen der Jahreszeit traditionelle Aromen zu. So, wie der Monat selbst voller Symbolik steckt, ist auch in den Speisen viel Sinnbildliches zu finden. Im Dezember findet man, was seit biblischen Zeiten zur Nahrung gehörte und was Menschen in kalten Gefilden in Ermangelung morgenländischer Vielfalt über viele Jahrhunderte zu Advendsund Weihnachtsspeisen erkoren. Etwas Besonderes musste es sein. Deshalb wanderten auch die Speisen mit, wenn Menschen in andere Länder zogen. Wer heute in einem portugiesischen Supermarkt einen (meist importierten) Schoko-Advendskalender kauft, folgt dieser Tradition ebenso, wie etwa die Nachfahren mährischer Einwanderer im US-Staat Pennsylvania, die bis heute eine Weihnachtspyramide aus Holz oder Kuchenteig errichten und mit Bonbons und Früchten schmücken. Wenn es also nach Zimt und Vanille duftet, ist nicht nur Hoch-Zeit

für Schleckermäuler, sondern auch für einen kulinarischen Ausflug in die Historie. Die Zutaten des Weihnachtsgebäcks, Honig, Gewürz und Fett, erzählen vom Leben in vergangenen Zeiten. In Portugal war Honig noch bis ins 20. Jahrhundert der Süßstoff der armen Leute. Bienenhaltung garantierte den Blütennektar auch für Haushalte, die sich keinen teuren Zucker leisten konnten. Gewürze hingegen, die Gaben des Orients und seit der Zeit portugiesischer Entdeckungsfahrten nach Europa gelangt, stehen für erworbenen Wohlstand. Äpfel, Kastanien und Mandeln verdeutlichen mit ihrem Fruchtstand die festverschlossene Zukunft. Der bolo rei, Portugals typische Backware der Saison, erinnert nicht nur mit seinem Namen (dt.: „königlicher Kuchen“) an die heiligen drei Könige. Seine Form ist einer Krone nachempfunden, der Kuchen ist reich gefüllt und dekoriert mit kandierten Früchten, die für die Edelsteine in den Kronen der Könige stehen. Im Teig versteckt ist der regalito (kleine Gabe), normalerweise eine Bohne. Wer sie in seinem Stück findet, muss in einigen Landesteilen den Portwein für das Weihnachtsfest im folgenden Jahr spendieren (und nährt damit die Hoffnung auf eine erneute Zusammenkunft). Andernorts gilt der Fund als Glücksbringer für das kommende Jahr. Der Weihnachtsstollen gehört mittlerweile auch in Portugal zum jahreszeitlichen Sortiment. Schwer und mit Zucker bestäubt, ist er das Symbol für das in Windeln gewickelte Kind. Bereits im frühen Mittelalter überreichten Bäcker dem Bischof einen solchen Kuchen als Gabe in der Advendszeit. Ein anderer, auch in Portugal wichtiger Bestandteil des Backens ist Marzipan, auf Portugiesisch maçapão. Darin steckt das lateinische Wort „panis“, Brot. Wegen seiner Süße ist Marzipan auch als das Brot der Engel

bekannt. Marzipan soll aus dem Orient kommen und durfte im Mittelalter nur von Apothekern hergestellt werden, was auch erklärt, warum es Rosenwasser als Bestandteil nur in Apotheken zu kaufen gibt. Kein Wunder also, dass Marzipan lange nur den Reichen vorbehalten war, die ihn als Nachspeise verzehrten. In der Algarve werden die kleinen, filigran gearbeiteten Marzipanküchlein auch meist nach dem Essen serviert. Gebacken in althergebrachten Formen und Förmchen, die man nur zur Weihnachtszeit hervorholt, mischt sich auf den Weihnachtstellern Heidnisches und Christliches. Spekulatius mit seinen Bildmotiven erinnert an Opfergaben: Hirsch, Hahn, Fuchs und Vogel stellen Wunsch- und Dankgeschenke an unsichtbare Mächte aus vorchristlicher Zeit dar. Flache Lebkuchen erinnern an das Fladenbrot der Hirten auf dem Feld. Die verschlungene Brezel aus Teig versinnbildlicht den

Strick, mit dem Jesus Christus die Hände gebunden wurden. Die zuckerüberzogene Pfeffernuss ist im übertragenen Sinne der Schwamm, mit dem die Lippen des Gekreuzigten benetzt wurden. An allen überlieferten Rezepten für Dezember-Leckereien lässt sich ablesen, ob sie in guten und friedlichen Zeiten entstanden oder in kriegerischen, in denen keine Rosinen und Gewürze eingeführt und Butter, Mehl und Zucker knapp waren. Die köstlichsten Rezepte stammen aus reichen Küchen, aus Städten, die Zentren des Überseehandels waren und aus Klöstern, die über genügend Honig verfügten. Feierlichkeiten zwischen den Jahren fanden allerdings immer statt, und sei es nur als Ausdruck von Lebensfreude und zum Trost während der langen, kalten Winterabende. Henrietta Bilawer

ecember is a month of fragrant smells. It is not the heavy perfume of summer roses or the intense aroma of autumn trumpet flowers you can smell; rather the scent of apples, almonds and chestnuts. Tangerines too, oranges and other citrus fruits, fresh or candied, add to the traditional flavours of the season. Just as the month itself is full of symbolism, so too can many allegories also be found in the food. In December you find foods we have had since biblical times and dishes which people in cold climates, in the absence of oriental diversity, have picked out for Advent and Christmas over many centuries. It had to be something special. This is why people took their own types of food and meals along with them when they moved to other countries. If you buy a chocolate Advent calendar (in most cases, an imported one) in a Portuguese supermarket today, you are following this tradition, just as the descendants of Moravian immigrants in the US state of Pennsylvania are, who, even today, build a Christmas pyramid of wood or cake and decorate it with sweets and fruits. So, when it smells of cinnamon and vanilla, it is not only the highlight of the year for anyone with a sweet tooth, but also time for a culinary excursion into history. Spices on the other hand, the gifts of the Orient and which reached Europe from the time of Portuguese voyages of discovery, are a sign of acquired prosperity. Apples, chestnuts and almonds, with their seeds deep inside, represent the tightly locked-away future. The bolo rei, the typical cake of the Xmas season in Portugal, calls to mind the Magi not only because of its name (English: “royal cake”). Its shape is based on that of a crown; the cake is richly decorated and filled with candied fruits that represent the gems in the crowns of kings. Hidden in the dough is the regalito (small gift), usually a bean. In some parts of the country, if you find it in your piece, you have to pay for the port wine for Christmas the following year (and this also expresses the hope of meeting again). Elsewhere, finding it is considered good luck for the coming year. Christmas cake is also now at home in Portugal as a part of the seasonal offerings. Heavy and dusted with sugar, it is the symbol of the child wrapped in swaddling clothes. Already back in the early medieval times, bakers used to present such cakes to the bishop as a gift during Advent. Marzipan is another important ingredient in Portugal for baking, in Portuguese maçapão. This word contains the Latin for bread, “panis”. Thanks to its sweetness, marzipan is also known as the bread of angels. Marzipan is said to come from the Orient and, in the Middle Ages, could only be produced by pharmacists, which also explains why you can buy rose water as an ingredient only at chemists’. No wonder, then, that marzipan was long reserved only for the

rich, who ate it as a dessert. In the Algarve, small, filigree marzipan cakes are also served mainly after the meal. Baked in traditional forms and moulds, which are only brought out at Christmas time, they combine the pagan and Christian right there on your Christmas plate. Spekulatius biscuits with their motifs are reminiscent of offerings: deer, cockerel, fox and bird are wish gifts and thank-you tokens to unseen forces from pre-Christian times. Flat gingerbread biscuits hark back to the flatbread of the shepherds in the field. The intricate pretzel made of dough symbolises the rope with which Jesus Christ’s hands were tied. In the figurative sense, the small sugar-coated ginger nuts represent the sponge with which the lips of the crucified were wetted. With all the traditional recipes for December goodies, you can see whether they were created in good and peaceful times or during times of war when there were no raisins or spices, and butter, flour and sugar were scarce. The most delicious recipes come from places with a rich cuisine, from cities which were centres of overseas trade and from monasteries which were well-stocked with honey. Ein traditioneller Kuchen ist der bolo rei, der dem deutschen Christstollen sehr ähnlich ist. In den Bolo sind eine Bohne und ein kleines Geschenk, das als Glücksbringer gilt, eingebacken. Derjenige, der die Bohne am Ende auf seinem Teller hat, muss den nächsten bolo rei kaufen. Ganz tief in der algarvischen Weihnachts-Tradition verwurzelt ist das frittierte Süßgebäck. Im Dezember und Januar findet man kaum einen portugiesischen Haushalt, in dem diese Kalorienbomben nicht nur für die Gäste aufgetischt werden. Filhós und sonhos sollte man unbedingt probieren! Filhós Ingredients: 4 eggs, flour, orange juice, as needed olive oil, as needed, 1 l oil for deep-frying 1 kg brown sugar, 0.5 l water

Filhós Zutaten: 4 Eier, Mehl, Orangensaft nach Bedarf Olivenöl, nach Bedarf, 1 l Öl zum Frittieren 1 kg brauner Zucker, 0,5 l Wasser Zubereitung: Die Eier in eine Schüssel geben und das Mehl langsam dazumischen, bis ein fester Teig entsteht. Ein bisschen Olivenöl dazugeben und so lange kneten, bis das Olivenöl aufgenommen ist. Nun mit Orangensaft (weniger als Olivenöl) wiederholen. Den Teig weiter bearbeiten, abwechselnd Olivenöl und Orangensaft dazu mischen. Achtung: Zuletzt immer Olivenöl unterkneten. Öl zum Frittieren erhitzen. Kleine Kugeln vom Teig nehmen, auf einem mit Olivenöl bestrichenen Küchenbrett (aus Marmor, wenn vorhanden) dünn drücken. In die Ölpfanne legen und mit einem Holzlöffel in der Mitte ein bisschen runterdrücken, um dem Teig eine Blumenform zu geben. Gesamten Teig ausbacken. In einem Topf das Wasser mit dem braunen Zucker zu einem dickflüssigen Sirup einkochen lassen. Die Teigblumen in diesen Zuckersirup tunken.

Sonhos Zutaten: 1 kg Mehl, 1 l Wasser, Salz nach Bedarf Zitronensaft nach Bedarf, Butter nach Bedarf, 10 Eier Für den Sirup: Wasser, Zucker, Zitronensaft Anisschnaps oder ein anderes aromatisches Getränk Zubereitung: Wasser, Salz, Zitronensaft und Butter in einem Topf erwärmen. Wenn diese Mischung warm ist, aber noch nicht kocht, das Mehl mit einem Kochlöffel langsam dazu mischen, so dass es nicht verklumpt. Ständig rühren, bis ein fester Teig entsteht. Danach die 10 Eier einzeln unterheben und den Teig gut kneten. Wer’s mag, kann auch gekochten und geriebenen Kürbis zu dem Teig geben. Kleine Teigkugeln formen und im heißen Öl frittieren. Für den Sirup Wasser mit Zucker dickflüssig einkochen (darf nicht karamellisieren), Zitronensaft und Anisschnaps dazugeben. Frittierte Kugeln in diesem Sirup oder in einer Mischung aus Zucker und Zimt wälzen.

Method: Put the eggs into a bowl and slowly mix in the flour until you have a stiff dough. Add a little olive oil and knead the dough until the olive oil has been absorbed. Now repeat with orange juice (less than olive oil). Keep on working the dough, alternately adding in olive oil and orange juice. Note: always knead in olive oil at the end. Heat the oil for frying. Take little balls of dough, press them out thinly on a kitchen board (made of marble if available) which you have already smeared with olive oil. Place them into the hot oil in the pan and press them down a little with a wooden spoon so that the dough takes on the shape of a flower. Deep fry all the dough. In a saucepan, boil the water with the brown sugar to form a thick syrup. Dip the dough flowers into this syrup.

Sonhos Ingredients: 1 kg flour, 1 l water, salt, as needed lemon juice, as needed, butter, as needed, 10 eggs For the syrup: water, sugar, lemon juice, Anise (aniseedflavoured spirit) or a different aromatic drink Method: Heat the water, salt, lemon juice and butter in a saucepan. When this mixture is warm but not boiling, mix in the flour slowly with a wooden spoon so it does not clump. Stir constantly, until you have a stiff dough. Then fold in the 10 eggs one at a time and knead the dough well. If you like, you can also mix in some boiled and grated pumpkin to the dough. Form small balls of dough and deep-fry in hot oil. For the syrup, boil the water with the sugar to a thick liquid (it should not caramelise), add Anise and lemon juice. Roll these deep fried balls in this syrup or in a mixture of sugar and cinnamon. Barocke Weihnacht 2

Die Barockmalerin Josefa de Óbidos ist eine der berühmtesten portugiesischen Künstlerinnen. Ihre Werke, die meist für Kirchen bestimmt waren, zeigen aber nicht nur biblische Szenen; Josefa schuf auch Stillleben und weltliche Portraits

evilla, im 17. Jahrhundert die bevölkerungsreichste Stadt Spaniens, setzte Maßstäbe in der Kunst und im Geistesleben. Viele berühmt gewordene Maler arbeiteten hier in zahlreichen Werkstätten für die Kirchen der Stadt und der Umgebung oder schufen Kunstwerke für die neu entstehenden Sakralbauten in Südamerika. Weithin bekannt wurde Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez, 1599 in Sevilla geboren und einer der wichtigsten Porträtmaler seiner Zeit. Er arbeitete am Hof des spanischen Königs Philipp IV. und unternahm in dessen Auftrag Reisen nach Italien, um dort die Malerei zu studieren. Velázquez‘ Vater Juan Rodríguez de Silva war Jurist portugiesischer Abstammung. Vielleicht war es die Hoffnung auf ähnlichen Erfolg, die den namenlosen Maler Baltazar Gomes Figueira aus dem portugiesischen Städtchen Óbidos nach Sevilla trieb. Seine Karriere blieb unspektakulär, dennoch ist er der einzige portugiesische Maler, dessen Werk im Pariser Musée du Louvre ausgestellt wurde. Baltazars Tochter Josefa aus der Ehe mit der Spanierin Catarina de Ayala Camacho Cabrera Romero wurde gleichfalls Malerin. Sie gilt in der portugiesischen Kunstgeschichte beinahe als Legende. Josefa Ayala Figueira wurde 1630 in Sevilla geboren und

kam nach der Unabhängigkeit Portugals von Spanien mit ihren Eltern und der jüngeren Schwester Luísa in die Heimat des Vaters, nach Óbidos. Auf der Quinta da Capeleira wurde sie sesshaft, nahm an Zusammenkünften von Künstlern und Literaten teil. Sie unterzeichnete ihre Werke mit ihrem Vornamen und dem Ort des Entstehens. Die Mehrzahl ihrer rund einhundert Gemälde entstanden daheim, so wurde sie als „Josefa de Óbidos“ bekannt. Vater Baltazar war ihr Vorbild. Stimmungen aus Schatten mit stark kontrastierenden Lichteffekten charakterisieren seine Bilder ebenso wie später Josefas Werke: Es sind Einflüsse des spanischen Lehrmeisters Francisco de Zurbarán, einem Vertreter des barocken Tenebrismus. Neben Ölgemälden zählen Kupfer- und Silberstiche zu Josefas Werk. Ihre ersten bekannt gewordenen Arbeiten waren Radierungen des Heiligen Josef und der Heiligen Katharina, der Josefa das Gesicht ihrer Mutter gab. Später sollte sie diese Motive auch in Öl gestalten. Als Josefa neunzehn Jahre alt war, erhielt sie von der Stadt Coimbra den Auftrag, eine Gravur für das Buch der Stadtrechte und -Gesetze herzustellen. Danach arbeitete sie als Malerin in Kirchen und Klöstern und wurde schließlich an

Pedro II, entstand und Josefa de Óbidos malte die Königstochter D. Isabel. Das Bild wurde deren Verlobten Herzog Victor Amadeus geschenkt, dem späteren Monarchen von Sardinien. Zahlreiche Arbeiten von Josefa de Óbidos sind verschollen. Andere Werke unbekannter Herkunft, die nicht vom Künstler gekennzeichnet wurden, halten Kunsthistoriker für Bilder der begabten Malerin. Dazu gehören zwei Darstellungen der Muttergottes und des Jesuskindes im Konvent Varatojo bei Torres Vedras nördlich von Lissabon. In Kirchen in Évora und in den zum Weltkulturerbe gehörenden Klöstern Alcobaça und Batalha gab es Ölgemälde von Josefa de Óbidos. Kunstwissenschaftler halten das Bild eines Lämmchens, umgeben von Blumenranken, für das beste Werk der Künstlerin des Barockzeitalters; es ist heute im Regional-Museum in Évora zu besichtigen. Ihr Leben gehörte der Malerei und der Gravur, das Arbeiten mit Ton war ihr Hobby. Sie hat nie geheiratet, wird aber als sehr eigenständige und unabhängige Frau beschrieben, die wusste, was sie wollte. Ihre Kunst ernährte sie hervorragend. Auch das hatte sie mit ihrem Vater gemeinsam, der als Kirchenmaler seine Familie selbst in den Wirren des Dreißigjährigen Krieges gut versorgte. In ihrem Testament hinterließ Josefas ihren Verwandten „988.980 Réis in festen und beweglichen Gütern“ (nach heutigem Wert rund 25.000 Euro). Dazu gehörten Grundstücke in Óbidos, die zum Teil äußerst gewinnbringend verpachtet waren. Josefa wurde in der Igreja de São Pedro in Óbidos beigesetzt. The baroque painter Josefa de Óbidos is one of Portugal’s most famous artists. Her works, which were mostly intended for churches, depict not only biblical scenes however, Josefa also created still life paintings and secular portraits

eville, in the 17th century, the most populous city in Spain, set the standards in the arts and in intellectual life. Many painters who became famous worked here in numerous workshops for the churches of the city and surrounding areas, or created art for the religious buildings in South America which were then being constructed. Diego Rodriguez de Silva y Velázquez, born in Seville in 1599 and one of the most important portrait painters of his time, became widely known. He worked at the court of the Spanish King Philip IV and made journeys to Italy under his authority to study painting there. Velázquez’s father, Juan Rodriguez de Silva was a lawyer of Portuguese descent. Perhaps it was the hope of similar success that drew the unknown painter Baltazar Gomes Figueira from the Portuguese town of Óbidos to Seville. His career was unspectacular, but he is the only Portuguese painter whose work has been exhibited in the Musée du Louvre. Josefa, Baltazar’s daughter from his marriage to the Spanish Catarina de Ayala Cabrera Camacho Romero, was also a painter. In Portuguese art history, she is regarded almost as a legend.

Josefa Ayala Figueira was born in Seville in 1630 and, after Portugal’s independence from Spain, came with her parents and younger sister Luisa to Óbidos, the home of her father. She settled down in the Quinta da Capeleira and took part in meetings of artists and writers. She signed her works with her first name and the place where they were created. The majority of her approximately one hundred paintings were done at home and so she became known as “Josefa de Óbidos”. She modelled herself on her father, Baltazar. Moods created by shadows with strongly contrasting light effects characterise his paintings as with Josefa’s works later: these are influences from the Spanish master Francisco de Zurbarán, an exponent of baroque tenebrism. In addition to oil paintings, Josefa’s work includes engravings in copper and silver. Her first known works were etchings of St Joseph and St Catherine, to whom Josefa gave her mother’s face. Later, she would go on to recreate these motifs in oil. When Josefa was nineteen years old, she received the order from the city of Coimbra to produce an engraving for the book of municipal rights and laws. She then worked

as a painter in churches and monasteries, and was eventually invited to the royal court, where she painted portraits of members of the royal family. There is a portrait of Maria Francisca Isabel de Sabóia, the mother of the future ruler Pedro II, and Josefa de Óbidos painted the king’s daughter, Isabel. This image was given to her fiancé, Duke Victor Amadeus, the later king of Sardinia. Many of the works by Josefa de Óbidos have been lost. There are other works of unknown origin that have not been signed by the artist which art historians believe to be pictures by this accomplished painter. These include two depictions of the Virgin Mary and the baby Jesus in the Varatojo Convent near Torres Vedras, north of Lisbon. There were oil paintings by Josefa de Óbidos in churches in Évora and at the World Heritage Sites of the Alcobaça and Batalha monasteries. Art scholars consider the picture of a lamb surrounded by floral tendrils to be the best work by this artist of the baroque era; it can be seen today in the regional museum in Évora. But it is not only Josefa de Óbidos’ Christian motifs which we still have. Some paintings of weddings attest to all kinds of mysticism. The painter also created many still lifes. One of them, “Natureza Morta com Doces e Barros”, the “Still Life with Sweets and Earthenware” has been used in numerous reproductions to decorate tradition-conscious cafes and bakeries in the country. Josefa de Óbidos died on 22nd July 1684. Her life was one of painting and engraving, working with clay was her hobby. She never married, but is described as a very self-reliant and independent woman who knew what she wanted. Her art provided magnificently for her. This she also she had in common with her father, who, as a church painter, provided well for his family even in the turmoil of the Thirty Years’ War. In her will, Josefa left her relatives “988,980 Réis in fixed and movable goods” (according to the current value, around 25,000 euro). This included pieces of land in Óbidos, which were, in part, leased and extremely profitable. Josefa was buried in the Igreja de São Pedro in Óbidos. DER SCHÖNE SCHEIN Réveillon, wie die Portugiesen den letzten Abend des Jahres nennen, hat vom Wortursprung etwas mit Aufwachen zu tun. Entsprechend munter gestaltet sich die Vorbereitung auf die Nacht der Nächte

s strahlt, das Jahr 2013, zu seinem Ende hin: Ein Brocken aus der Frühzeit des Sonnensystems kommt der Erde ganz nah. Ison heißt der Komet, benannt nach dem Netzwerk internationaler Sternwarten, von dem er entdeckt wurde. Weil er mit dem FesttagsLamettaglitzer konkurrieren muss, wurde er medial zum „Weihnachtskometen“. Ison erreiche „größte Helligkeit und könnte bis in den Januar ein spektakuläres Himmelsschauspiel bieten“, jubeln die Astronomen. Der Weihnachtskomet überstrahlt also den Stern von Bethlehem, auch wenn nicht sicher ist, ob er mit bloßem Auge zu sehen ist. Das erinnert an Politiker, die gleichfalls Sternstunden und eine hellere Zukunft in Aussicht stellen, auf die Portugal zusteuere. Doch wie beim Kometen sieht der staunende Betrachter davon kaum einen Abglanz. Der Belegschaft des blauen Planeten ist der Stern erst mal schnuppe; sie ist mit der Vorbereitung auf den Jahreswechsel beschäftigt. Der ist viel näher als der Komet, der am zweiten Weihnachtstag der Erde am nächsten kommt, und zwar bis auf 60 Millionen Kilometer. Direkt vor der Tür steht aber, ganz irdisch, das neue Jahr. Nach den Service-Providern der Heiligen Nacht (Christkind, Weihnachtsmann, Rentiere, Engel, Elfen) kommt der Endof-Year-Rush, das Silvester-roll-out. Das erfordert, wie Soziologen sagen, eine „barrierebezogene Strategieplanung“: Wie können Vorsätze in die Tat umgesetzt werden und was könnte eine Durchführung behindern. Das Praktische an Vorsätzen ist, dass sie an Silvester neu und frisch sind und ihr Verfasser erst nochmal richtig einen draufmachen kann, denn die gelobte Besserung gilt ja erst fürs kommende Jahr. Feiern also. Ist Silvester ein notabler Anlass? Als ob es gerade 2013 etwas zu feiern gäbe. Das Jahr war eher mau, nährt dadurch aber die Hoffnung, wenigstens am Schluss müsse etwas Besonderes passieren. Aber was? Es ist keine zwölf Monate her, da nörgelte mancher Algarve-Bewohner hinter vorgehaltener Hand, das gekürzte Silvesterfeuerwerk sei trist. Verständlich, ja, Finanzkrise, leere Kassen und so weiter, aber doch trist. Auch wenn keiner zuhörte, war klar, dass der Staatschef in seiner Neujahrsansprache voll des Lobes für die Bürger war, die EU und Troika brav demonstrieren, wie man den Gürtel immer noch ein Loch enger schnallen kann. Und so schwor der Präsident das geübte Volk auf ein 2013 voller austeridade ein, und er wird es für 2014 wieder tun. Aber bis zum Neujahrs-Glockenschlag dauert‘s ja noch ein paar Tage. Sparzwanggebeutelte sehnen sich nach Festtagsglanz.

Änderungsschneider schieben Doppelschichten: Festtagsroben, extra erworben, müssen passend genadelt werden. Portugiesen feiern in Familie, daheim, brutzeln etwas Leckeres oder setzen sich vor den Fernseher. Wer sich‘s leisten kann, erlebt ein feines Jahres-Finish im Restaurant. Über´s Jahr schmeckt frango in der rustikalen tasca am besten, aber Silvester ist eben anders. Und so drängen Konsumenten festtags-prophylaktisch an Feinkost-Theken, umlagern Sektstände, forschen nach der coolsten Deko und der hipsten Klamotte. Verkäufer gucken hilflos ob der Bitte um Beratung, denn im Kaufhallen-Kosmos zeigt die Verschlankungspolitik Wirkung, wo erfahrene ältere Mitarbeiter entlassen wurden, um ahnungslosem Niedriglohn-Nachwuchs Platz zu machen. Doch gemessen an den Tüten, die aus den centros comerciais getragen werden, pumpen von tausend Einkäufern etwa hundert Prozent das in den Wirtschaftskreislauf, was vom kurz und klein gekürzten Weihnachtsgeld übrig ist. Die Wirtschaftskrise hat Pause. In der von Kriegen, Naturkatastrophen und Armutsberichten geschüttelten Welt glänzt die Fassade. Die Gastronomie hat sich darauf eingestellt. In der Algarve bieten Hotels eine rauschende Silvesternacht mit Musik und Schlemmerei an oder gleich kleine Neujahrs-Ferien mit Brunch und Lunch. Die Preisgrenze ist dabei nur nach unten festgelegt. Dennoch: Potenzielle Kunden sind nicht die Reichen. Die tummeln sich in Lissabonner Nobelbars und In-Restaurants. Die Silvesternacht hat eigene Webseiten (www.destinoslusos.com/2012/10/reveillon-2013-algarve-promocoes. html und https://pt-pt.facebook.com/apassagemdeano) mit allem, was Chronisten des Nachtlebens für João Normalverbrauchers Jahresendfeier empfehlen. Sobald der Nachwuchs halbwegs aus den Windeln ist, darf er mit, denn Babysitter sind in der Nacht der Nächte rar – die Altersklasse bevölkert Bars und Diskotheken und setzt zuvor verdiente Aufpass-Gagen in Flüssiges um. Vielleicht wird die letzte und zugleich erste Nacht der Jahre aber ganz anders als geplant. Wer weiß, ob Ison, der Schweifstern, nicht doch alles überstrahlt – oder ob er seine Reise durchs All an der Sonne vorbei gar nicht überlebt und auseinanderbricht. Auch das sei möglich, sagen die Himmelsforscher. Kometen haben eine schwierige Prognose. Egal, was das nun wieder für 2014 bedeuten könnte, es ändert nichts; da müssen wir durch. THE BEAUTIFUL APPEARANCE The origin of the word réveillon, as the Portuguese call the last night of the year, has something to do with waking up. And the preparations which are being organised for this night of nights are correspondingly lively

his year of 2013 is really streaking to its end: a chunk of matter from the early era of the solar system will be getting very close to the Earth. The comet is called Ison, named after the network of international observatories where it was discovered. Because it has to compete with the festive glitter of tinsel, the media has renamed it the “Christmas Comet“. Ison should become “hugely bright and could provide a spectacular celestial show right on into January,“ say the astronomers with delight. So, the Christmas comet will outshine the star of Bethlehem, even though it is not certain that it will be visible to the naked eye. This is reminiscent of politicians who also light up the sky with the prospect of a brighter future to come for Portugal. But, just as with the comet, the admiring observer hardly sees even a slight glimmer. At the moment, the occupants of the planet couldn’t care less about the comet; they are far too busy preparing for the New Year. This is much closer than the comet, which comes closest to the Earth on Boxing Day, up to about 60 million kilometres away. But right before us, in a more earthly sense, is the New Year. After the service providers for Christmas Eve (Santa Claus, reindeer, angels, elves) are done, comes the end-of-year-rush, the New Year‘s Eve roll-out. As sociologists say, this requires “barrier-related strategic planning“: How can resolutions be put into practice and what might hinder their implementation. The nice thing about resolutions is that they are new and fresh on New Year’s Eve and the “resolver” can still go to town, because the improvements promised are only applicable to the coming year. So, in other words, time to party. Is New Year’s Eve a notable event? As if there were something to celebrate about 2013. The year was rather poor, but this feeds the hope that something special might happen, at least at the end. But what? It‘s been less than twelve months since Algarve residents were grumbling away, behind closed doors, that the shortened New Year‘s Eve fireworks display was miserable. Yes, we know, yes, financial crisis, an empty treasury and so on, but still miserable. Even if no one was listening, it was clear that the President in his New Year‘s speech was full of praise for the citizens, obediently demonstrating to the EU and Troika how you can still tighten your belt one hole tighter. And so the President committed his well-behaved people to a 2013 full of austeridade and will do the same for 2014. But there are still a few days until the bells ring in the New Year. The financial-squeeze-ridden are longing for some festive sparkle. Tailors are work-

ing double shifts: festive robes, specially bought, need to be taken in to fit. The Portuguese celebrate at home with the family; they fry up something delicious or sit in front of the TV. Those who can afford it can enjoy a fine end to the year in a restaurant. Throughout the year, frango in the rustic tasca tastes best, but New Year‘s Eve is just different. And so, as a feast day prophylactic, consumers swarm around delicatessen counters, besiege champagne stands, search for the coolest decorations and the hippest clothes. Sales staff look on helplessly when they get a request for advice, because, in the world of department stores, the slimming down policies, where experienced older employees have been laid off to make way for clueless, young, low-wage staff, are making themselves felt. However, judging by the bags that are being carried out of the centros comerciais, some one hundred percent of a thousand buyers are pumping what is left from their Christmas money, which has already been cut to the bone, back into the economy. The economic crisis is having a break. In this world, shaken by wars, natural disasters and poverty reports, the façade is still shining. The catering trade has already adapted to it. In the Algarve, hotels are offering a lavish New Year‘s Eve with music and feasting or instead, small New Year‘s holidays with brunch and lunch. There is only a lower limit on prices. Nevertheless: potential customers are not the rich. They are cavorting in Lisbon’s fine bars and “in” restaurants. New Year’s Eve has its own website (www.destinoslusos. com/2012/10/reveillon-2013-algarve-promocoes.html and https://pt-pt.facebook.com/apassagemdeano) with everything which the chroniclers of the night life recommend for João Bloggs type consumers’ end-of-year celebrations. As soon as the kids are halfway out of nappies, they can go along too; babysitters are hard to find on this night of nights - that age group populates the bars and nightclubs and turns into liquid the salaries they have already earned from minding babies.But perhaps the last, and also, the first night of the year might turn out very differently from what is planned. Who knows whether Ison, the comet, might not outshine everything - or whether it might not survive its journey through space past the sun and break apart. This is also possible, according to astronomers. Comets are hard to predict. No matter what this could mean for 2014, it changes nothing; we have to carry on. With that in mind: happy New Year! Spannendes Fahrerlebnis Mit dem Kartódromo Internacional do Algarve, der 2010 fertiggestellt wurde, verfügt die Algarve über eine der größten Bahnen für Kartrennen in Europa. Direkt an das Autódromo angeschlossen, liegt es knapp 20 Kilometer von Portimão entfernt, mitten in der hügeligen Landschaft der Algarve. Motorsportbegeisterte können hier unter hohen Sicherheitsvorkehrungen Vollgas geben und ihren Adrenalinspiegel auf Hochtouren bringen. Über 150 Karts verschiedener Leistungsstärken stehen zur Verfügung, um mit bis zu 160 km/h über die 1.532 Meter lange und 8 Meter breite Kartbahn, die mit sieben Links- und zehn Rechtskurven ausgestattet ist, zu rasen. Zudem ist die Strecke sehr vielseitig und erlaubt es, verschiedene Variationen zu fahren. Fahrer können zwischen schnelleren oder technisch anspruchsvolleren Strecken wählen. Thrilling driving experience In the shape of the Kartódromo Internacional do Algarve, which was completed in 2010, the Algarve has one of the biggest tracks for kart racing in Europe. Directly on the Autódromo, it is just 20 kilometres away from Portimão, in the middle of the rolling countryside of the Algarve. Motor sports enthusiasts can go full throttle and put their adrenaline levels into high gear here, where there are top class safety precautions.
