Mit Gründonnerstag, Karfreitag und Ostern kommt das Kirchenjahr zu einem entscheidenden Höhepunkt. Nachdem an Weihnachten die Geburt Jesu gefeiert worden ist, erinnern die Christen in aller Welt nun an sein Leiden, seinen Tod und seine Auferstehung. Die Algarve ist besonders reich an Osterbräuchen, deren Tradition mit bunten Festen und Prozessionen gehuldigt wird. Zusätzlich ist der April in diesem Jahr durch zahllose Veranstaltungen zum 40. Jahrestag der Nelkenrevolution geprägt, die das Land unblutig aus der Diktatur befreit hat. Es sind also religiöse und historische Anlässe, die die Portugiesen in diesem Monat feiern - für sich, nicht für die Touristen, mit Hingabe für ihre Tradition und voller Stolz auf ihre Geschichte. Damit unterscheidet sich der April vom kommerziell geprägten Trubel der Sommermonate und bietet interessierten Besuchern der Region die einmalige Chance, authentische portugiesische Bräuche und Historie aus erster Hand zu erleben.

uf zahllosen Wegen kann man die weitläuﬁge Serra erkunden, die im wesentlichen aus zwei Granitmassiven besteht: dem 902 Meter hohen Fóia und dem 130 Meter niedrigeren Picota. Die Berghänge waren bis ins 20. Jahrhundert dichter besiedelt als benachbarte Regionen. Denn hier fällt mehr Regen und selbst nach extrem trockenen Jahren sprudeln die Quellen hier ganzjährig. Die Landwirtschaft florierte bis in 1970er Jahre durch Rinderzucht und den Anbau von Kartoffeln, Mais und Getreide. Korkrinde, Honig, Pinienholz für den Hausbau und Eukalyptusholz für die Papierfabriken im nahen Spanien sorgten für einen gewissen Reichtum in der Region. Lokale Historiker behaupten, der Kreis Monchique reichte früher bis Alvor, woraus sich die enge Verbindung vieler Familien aus den beiden Orten erklärt. Mitte des 15. Jahrhunderts soll Prinz Heinrich der Seefahrer besonders verdiente Seeleute aus Alvor mit Land in der Serra belohnt haben. Das Dörfchen Monchique entwickelte sich dank seiner günstigen Lage zum Zentrum in der noch dünn besiedelten Region. Handwerker zogen hinzu; Woll- und Leinenwebereien sorgten für so viele Einnahmen, dass eine Goldene Epoche begann. Bald fertigten Schuster in über 70 Betrieben Schuhe, Sandalen, Gürtel und Eselhalfter für den Export, Schreiner verarbeiteten die lokale Kastanie zu solidem Mobiliar, darunter auch den berühmten Scherenstuhl nach römischem Vorbild. Vieles davon hat bis heute seine Spuren im Ort hinterlassen. Eigentlich kann man ihn nur zu Fuss erkunden. Touristen suchen in der Regel gleich die Kirche mit ihrem manuelinischen Knoten-Portal auf, das als Wahrzeichen von Monchique gilt. Der Hauptaltar birgt die Figur der Mutter Gottes der Empfängnis, die aus den Werkstätten des Meisters der portugiesischen Kirchenkunst Machado de Castro stammen soll. Den Ort durchqueren enge Gassen und Treppen. An vielen Wänden hängen Vasen, es blüht und duftet. Vom ehemaligen Franziskaner-Kloster aus dem 17. Jahrhundert blickt man auf den Ort hinab. Die steilen wie auch ﬂachen Hänge rund um Monchique sind weitgehend terrassiert - ein Erbe arabischer Agrikultur - und mit mächtigen Granitmauern abgesichert. Die Terrassen werden geschickt

here are countless ways to explore the vast Serra, which essentially consists of two granite massifs: the 902 metre high Fóia and 130 metre lower Picota. Up until the 20th century, the mountain slopes were more densely populated than the neighbouring regions. This is because there is more rainfall there, and even after extremely dry years the springs still bubble up all year round. Agriculture flourished until the 1970s, with cattle breeding and the cultivation of potatoes, corn and grain. Cork bark, honey, pine wood for house-building and eucalyptus wood for paper mills in nearby Spain, brought a distinct prosperity to the region. Local historians claim that the district of Monchique used to extend to Alvor, which would explain the close connections between many of the families in the two places. In the mid 15th century, Prince Henry the Navigator is said to have rewarded especially deserving sailors from Alvor with land in the Serra. The village of Monchique began to develop thanks to its convenient location in the centre of what was still a sparsely populated region. Craftsman moved in; wool and linen weavers were soon bringing in so much revenue that a “Golden Age” began. Soon, in more than 70 factories, cobblers were making shoes, sandals, belts and donkey halters for export, carpenters were working the local chestnut to make solid furniture, including the famous scissor chairs based on the Roman model. You can still find traces of much of this activity in the area today. It can only be explored properly on foot. Tourists usually make straight for the church, with its Manueline knotted portal which bears the emblem of Monchique. The main altar contains the figure of Our Lady of Conception, which is said to have come from the workshop of the master of Portuguese religious art, Machado de Castro. The place is criss-crossed with narrow streets and stairways. There are vases hanging from many of the walls, flowers bloom and the air is scented. From the former 17th century Franciscan monastery, you can look down on the town. Both the steep and the flatter slopes around Monchique are largely terraced - a legacy of Arab agriculture - and protected by massive

TRAVEL bewässert. Oft bemalen sie die Berglandschaft mit geometrischen Mustern in sattem Smaragd und bringen Bilder von den Azoren oder Irland in Erinnerung. Dunkel ist die Erde, fruchtbar, reich an Mineralien. Aber selbst unter diesen so günstigen Umständen stirbt auch hier die Landwirtschaft aus. Zitronen werden schon seit Jahren kaum noch geerntet. Häuser in den reizvollsten Winkeln der Serra stehen leer oder werden meist nur noch von Ausländern bewohnt, die sich an der Aussicht auf einen der schönsten Küstenstriche Europas erfreuen. In der Vergangenheit verwandelten immer wieder große Feuer Tausende von Hektar der Berglandschaft in eine Aschewüste. Viele Familien verloren ihr gesamtes Hab und Gut und Existenzquellen fielen den Feuern zum Opfer, darunter Kork, Oliven, Früchte, Honig und die Me dronho-Bäume, deren Früchte zum besten und teuersten Schnaps des Landes destilliert werden. Zur Zeit zeigt sich die Serra wieder in geradezu verwirrend grünem Kleid. Die Waldböden sind überzogen von einem „Flickenteppich“ aus zahllosen leuchtenden Farbtupfern: Gelbe, rote, blaue Blütenfelder wechseln sich ab und sind wegen der inzwischen teilweise abgeholzten Wälder gut sichtbar. Zu den besonders schönen Pflanzen zählen wilder Rhododendron, langstielige wilde Pfingstrosen, etliche Orchideen und gelbblühende Mimosen. Insgesamt lassen sich in der Serra über tausend Pflanzenarten entdecken, darunter viele subtropische.

granite walls. The terraces are cunningly watered. Often they embellish the mountain landscape with geometric patterns in rich emerald tones and bring to mind images of Ireland and the Azores. The earth is dark, fertile, rich in minerals. However, despite such favourable circumstances, farming is dying out there. The lemons have hardly been harvested for years now. Houses in the most attractive corners of the Serra stand empty or are only inhabited by foreigners who enjoy the views over one of the most beautiful coastlines in Europe. In the past, great fires have repeatedly turned thousands of acres of the mountain landscape into a desert of ash. Many families lost all their worldly goods and their sources of livelihood, including cork, olives, fruits, honey and the Medronho trees whose fruits are distilled to make the best and most expensive liquor in the country, all fell victim to the fires. At present, the Serra is once again all dressed up in somewhat deceptive shades of green. The forest floor is covered in a patchwork of countless splashes of bright colour: alternating swathes of yellow, red and blue flowers are clearly visible due to the now partially cleared forests. Among the most beautiful plants are the wild rhododendrons, long-stemmed wild peonies, several kinds of orchids and yellow-flowered mimosas. Altogether, there are over a thousand species of plants

Auch die Tierwelt ist vielfältig. Adler, selbst die stolzen Königsadler, sind keine Seltenheit. Wildschweine fühlen sich in der Einsamkeit der entlegenen Regionen besonders wohl, Marder und sogar einige Luchse ﬁnden hier einen günstigen Lebensraum. Das kleine Badeörtchen Caldas liegt fünf Kilometer südlich von Monchique. Hier gingen Römer und Reiche in dem geschätzten Quellwasser baden und kurierten damit ihre kriegsmüden Leiber. Lange vermittelte der Ort durch authentische Details und bröckelnde Fassaden einen leicht morbiden Zauber, bis man dort ein modernes Badezentrum einrichtete und mit dem Verschwinden der Patina auch der Charme verloren ging. Trotzdem bietet Caldas einen gewissen Reiz, üppige Gärten laden zu Spaziergängen ein und man kann das legendäre Monchique-Wasser kosten, von dessen Heilwirkung man vor allem im 19. Jahrhundert überzeugt war. Bei einem Ausﬂug zur „Fonte Santa“ zwischen Monchique und Alferce murmelt das gleiche Wasser unter Korkeichen und die verwunschene Idylle lädt zu einem romantischen Picknick ein.

Wild boar feel particularly comfortable in the solitude of more remote regions, martens and even some lynx also find this a favourable habitat. The small seaside village of Caldas is located five kilometres south of Monchique. Here, Romans and the rich used to go bathing in the highly-prized spring water to cure their war-weary bodies. For a long time, the place cast a slightly morbid spell thanks to its authentic details and crumbling facades, until a modern spa centre was erected which removed the patina but also some of the charm. Nevertheless, Caldas has retained a certain charm, lush gardens invite you to stroll around and you can taste the legendary Monchique water of whose healing properties, people in the 19th century were particularly convinced. If you take a trip to the “Fonte Santa” between Monchique and Alferce, the same water will be muttering under cork oaks and this enchanted idyll is very inviting for a romantic picnic. Rolf Osang

Es ist schwer, die Herkunft des portugiesischen „Folar“ zu bestimmen, aber der Legende nach begann alles mit einer jungen Dame, die gerne heiraten wollte und für einen Freier zu Saint Catherine betete. Sie bekam mehr, als sie erwartet hatte und fand gleich zwei Anwärter - einen armen Bauern und einen Aristokraten. Ihre Unentschlossenheit sich zu entscheiden verursachte einen Kampf zwischen den beiden Männern, der das Mädchen zu einer Antwort zwang. Sie wählte den Landwirt, lebte aber fortan in Angst vor dem Aristokraten, der sie verfolgte.

It is hard to pinpoint the origin of the Portuguese ‘folar’, but, according to legend, it all started when a young lady, who wished to be married, prayed to Saint Catherine for a suitor. She got more than she bargained for and found two suitors at the same time – a poor farmer and an aristocrat – and her uncertainty about which one to choose caused a fight between the two men, forcing her to make a decision. After choosing the farmer, the girl lived in fear of being persecuted by the aristocrat and she prayed once again to St. Catherine for protection, offering her flowers. When she arrived home, she found a cake with whole eggs on top, as well as the flowers she had offered to the saint. The farmer and the aristocrat received the very same gifts and ended up reconciling. Since then, it has been the tradition for godparents and godchildren to offer each other a ‘folar’ during Easter as a token of friendship. Made of flour, eggs, yeast, butter, a hint of fennel and topped with boiled eggs, the ‘folares’ are always in high demand at Padaria Central, one of the oldest bakeries in Lagos, established in 1906. Teresa Dias has been managing the shop ever since she inherited it from her father-in-law. “In the old times, we would have to do the ‘folares’ at least two months before Easter. Now we start preparing them two weeks in advance. Unfortunately, some old traditions have been lost. People used to bake their ‘folares’ here in our wood burners and we used to chat and laugh whilst decorating our cakes”. Im Café „Fresco” in Lagos wird der traditionelle SimnelKuchen, der ursprünglich mit Marzipan überzogen ist, durch den Victoria-Biskuitkuchen ersetzt, der mit Sahne und Marmelade gefüllt und je nach Geschmack mit Schokoladenhasen und -hühnern dekoriert wird. „Manche Menschen mögen kein Marzipan“, erklärt Inhaberin Veronica Bacur, die auch exzellenten Karotten- und Schokoladenkuchen und Heidelbeer-Muffins herstellt. Die Simnel-Kuchen aus Mehl, Zucker, Butter, Eier, duftenden Gewürzen und Früchten werden ursprünglich mit elf Marzipankugeln verziert, die die Jünger Jesus darstellen sollen, ohne Judas. Jesus wird manchmal durch eine Kugel in der Kuchenmitte versinnbildlicht. SimnelKuchen stammen aus dem Mittelalter und sind zusammen mit Ostereiern die bekanntesten Traditionen, die neues Leben und das Ende der Fastenzeit symbolisieren.

Die meisten deutschen Osterbräuche drehen sich um Eier, Hasen und die Ankunft des Frühlings. Dekorierte, bemalte und gefärbte Eier spielen eine große Rolle und die beliebteste Tradition ist die Eiersuche, bei der die Kinder die vom „Osterhasen” versteckten Schokoladeneier aufspüren müssen. Die Tradition des Eierfärbens hat ihren Ursprung darin, dass früher während der Fastenzeit keine Eier gegessen werden durften. So wurden sie zwecks längerer Haltbarkeit gekocht und bunt bemalt, damit man sie von den rohen Eiern unterscheiden konnte. An den Ostertagen ist es eher üblich, dass die Deutschen Fisch und Lamm essen, die klassischen süßen Köstlichkeiten unterscheiden sich von Region zu Region. Die „Padaria Wini” in Lagos backt herkömmlichen Osterkuchen als Hasen und Kränze aus Hefeteig, die auf Wunsch zusammen mit gefärbten gekochten Eiern verkauft werden, oder riesige Plunderbrezeln. Auch eine große Auswahl unterschiedlicher Brotsorten, darunter Malz-, Dinkel und Sojabrot, sowie köstliche Kuchen und Torten werden in dieser typisch deutschen Bäckerei angeboten.

At “Fresco”, a cafe located in Lagos which opened last year, the traditional simnel cake covered in marzipan will be replaced by a Victoria sponge cake filled with fresh cream and jam and decorated with chocolate rabbits and chickens, as desired. “Some people don’t like marzipan,” explains owner Veronica Bacur, who also prepares delicious carrot cakes, blueberry muffins and chocolate fudge cakes. Made of flour, sugar, butter, eggs, fragrant spices, fruits and covered in marzipan, the simnel cake features eleven marzipan balls which represent the true disciples of Jesus, excluding Judas. Jesus is sometimes represented by a ball placed at the centre. Simnel cakes date back to mediaeval times and are one of Easter’s best-known traditions along with Easter eggs, representing new life and the end of Lent.

Aus Mehl, Eiern, Hefe, Butter, einem Hauch von Fenchel und mit gekochten Eiern belegt, geniesen die Folars stets eine große Nachfrage in der „Padaria Central”, einer der ältesten Bäckereien in Lagos, die im Jahre 1906 gegründet wurde. Teresa Dias führt das Geschäft, seit sie es von ihrem Schwiegervater geerbt hat. „Leider sind einige alte Traditionen verloren gegangen. Die Leute haben hier in unseren Holzöfen ihre Folars gebacken und wir haben geplaudert und gelacht, während wir unsere Kuchen dekoriert haben“. Obwohl es diesen alten Brauch nicht mehr gibt, ist die „Padaria Central” immer noch einer der besten Orte für die traditionellen Osterkuchen. Aber auch der klassische Mandelkuchen, Osternester und Biskuitekuchen mit Schokoladengitter und Eigelbfäden stehen an diesen Tagen hoch im Kurs.

Osterprozessionen Auch Osterprozessionen dürfen an der Algarve nicht fehlen. Die wohl bekannteste ist das Fest der Tochas Floridas. Jährlich zieht es Tausende Besucher nach S. B. de Alportel, um die besondere Art der Auferstehung zu feiern. Nach alter Tradition tragen die männlichen Stadtbewohner lange Stöcke, an deren Ende bunte Blumensträuße befestigt sind, und rufen in einer Art Sprechgesang übersetzt „Er ist auferstanden, wie er gesagt hat! Easter processions Easter processions are also traditional in the Algarve at this time. The best-known is probably the festival of Tochas Floridas. Every year it attracts thousands of visitors to S.B. de Alportel to celebrate the special nature of the resurrection. According to ancient tradition, the male townspeople carry long sticks with colourful bouquets attached at the ends and call, in a kind of chant, the Portuguese for, “He is arisen, as He foretold! Süße Ostermessen In der Gemeinde Paderne bei Albufeira findet die „VII. Mostra do Folar” statt. Der typische Osterkuchen wird von Region zu Region unterschiedlich zubereitet. In Paderne ist es Tradition, ihn mit Zimt, Schmalz, Fenchel und Zucker zu backen. Obendrauf wird ein gekochtes Ei eingearbeitet und zum Schluss wird der Kuchen mit Eigelb eingepinselt, damit er einen besonderen Glanz erhält. Die Besucher haben auf der Ostermesse die Möglichkeit, diesen süßen Kuchen sowie einige der typischen Gerichte der lokalen Küche zu kosten. In Memory 25th April is the 40th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution. The leftist uprising against the authoritarian dictatorship in 1974 was virtually bloodless and opened the way to the Democratic Republic. To commemorate the day, there will be a number of cultural events taking place in the Algarve along with exhibitions devoted to this topic which will be opening. Under the title “Rostos das palavras de Abril”, Henrique Gabriel will be showing portraits (ink on canvas) of poets and musicians who opposed the regime with words and songs at that time. Quinta das Figueirinhas, Silves The “New Association for Mediterranean Gardeners in Portugal” has organised a reading by the authors of the newly published book, “Wild Flowers of the Algarve”. The two authors, Chris Thorogood and Simon Hiscock, will be present to give a brief introduction to the wild flowers of the Algarve. Some copies of the new edition will be available at a special discounted price; the book has not yet appeared in the shops. This is the first comprehensive guide to the luxurious Mediterranean flora of the Algarve region in the south of Portugal, including the National Park of the Peninsula Cape St Vincent, an area of great botanical importance with many endemic and rare species, including orchids and parasitic plants. In der Karwoche vor Ostern verwandelt sich das Gassenviertel rund um das Kloster Convento São José in Lagoa in einen bunten Marktplatz. Aber nicht in irgendeinen Marktplatz, sondern in einen Maghreb-Arabischen Marktplatz. Tausende Kerzen beleuchten abends den Weg durch die Gassen rund um das Kloster und dessen Innenhof. Orientalischer Bauchtanz wird genauso geboten wie landestypische Leckerbissen, Gewürzstände, Kunsthandwerk und Musikdarbietungen arabischer sowie nordafrikanischer Herkunft. Neben klassischen ethnischen Musikerlebnissen wartet außerdem eine Discolounge mit arabischer Chillout Music auf neugierige Klangfans. Der diesjährige, erstmals stattfindende thematisierte Kultur-Markt im Kerzenschein ist die Premiere für drei zyklisch geplante Kultur-Markt-Veranstaltungen in Lagoa. Die Kerzen spielen bei dem Projekt eine wichtige Rolle. Sie sorgen nicht bloß für magische Atmosphäre und einen Hauch Mystik, sondern sie sind Teil des Konzepts und dekorieren den Markt mit religiösen Symbolen. Halbmond, Kreuz, und Davidstern repräsentieren die Kultur und die Mentalität der Völker rund um das Mittelmeer. Jede Kerze ist ein Licht für Harmonie zwischen den Religionen.

Cultural market by candlelight During the Holy Week before Easter, the district of narrow streets around the monastery, Convento São José in Lagoa, turns into a colourful marketplace. But not into just any old marketplace, it turns into a Maghreb Arabian marketplace. At night, thousands of candles light the way through the narrow streets around the monastery and its courtyard. You will find oriental belly dancing on offer, along with typical delicacies, spice stalls, crafts and music performances of Arabic and North African origin. In addition to classic ethnic music experiences, there is also a disco lounge with Arabian chill-out music to entice curious sound fans. This year’s themed cultural market in candlelight is being held for the first time and is the first of three cultural market events in Lagoa, planned on a cyclic basis. The candles play an important role for the project. They are there not only to create a magical atmosphere and provide a touch of mysticism; they are also part of the concept and decorate the market with religious symbols. The crescent moon, the cross and the Star of David represent the culture and mentality of the peoples around the Mediterranean. Each candle shines a light for harmony between the religions.

Pólo Museulógico dos Frutos Secos Das Museum zur Weiterverarbeitung von Trockenfrüchten wurde erstmals im Dezember 1998 eröffnet. Die ehemalige kleine Fabrik, die 1943 gegründet wurde, produzierte und vermarktete in den achtziger Jahren des letzten Jahrhunderts Feigen, Mandeln und Johannisbrot. In den Räumlichkeiten sind Maschinen zur Zerkleinerung von Mandeln und zum Mahlen von Johannisbrot ausgestellt, Fotos und Bilder zeigen Szenen von der Ernte. Das Museum wurde Anfang des Jahres wiedereröffnet und ermöglicht dem Besucher einen direkten Kontakt mit den traditionellen Prozessen und ein besseres Verständnis für die sozio-ökonomische Aktivität in der Gemeinde Loulé.

The museum was reopened earlier this year and provides visitors with a direct contact to the traditional processes and a better understanding of the socio-economic activity in the municipality of Loulé.

Museu de Arqueologia de Albufeira Ein römisches Ankerblatt, das im Jahr 2009 an der Küste von Albufeira entdeckt wurde, ist jetzt dem Städtischne Museum für Archäologie in Albufeira übergeben worden, nachdem es am Nationalen Zentrum für Nautik und Unterwasser-Archäologie in Lissabon konserviert und restauriert wurde. Das Fundstück misst zwei Meter, wiegt ca. 300 Kilo und scheint mehr als 2.400 Jahre alt zu sein. Wer im Sommer das Museum besucht, wird dieses einzigartige Relikt aus dem 4. Jahrhundert v. Ch. aus der Nähe betrachten können. Der Block aus Blei ist das schwerste Teil des Ankers und hat den Zahn der Zeit überlebt hat Entdeckt wurde er von Tauchern etwa drei Meilen vor der Küste zwischen den Stränden von São Rafael und Galé. Der Anker gilt als eines der größten Fundstücke aus dem Römischen Reich, das jemals an der portugiesischen Küste gefunden wurde. Somit ist bewiesen, dass römische Segelschiffe an der Algarve-Küste vorbeizogen.

A Roman anchor fluke, which was discovered in 2009 on the coast of Albufeira, has now been transferred to the Municipal Museum of Archaeology in Albufeira after being preserved and restored at the National Centre for Nautical and Underwater Archaeology in Lisbon. The find measures two metres long, weighs about 300 kilos and seems to be more than 2,400 years old. If you visit the museum in the summer, you will be able to view a unique relic from the 4th century BC right up close. The block is made of lead and was the heaviest part of the anchor; this forced it down to stay on the seabed and thus preserved it from the ravages of time. It was discovered by divers about three miles off the coast, between the beaches of São Rafael and Galé and is regarded as one of the greatest finds from the Roman Empire ever found on the Portuguese coast. This provides proof that Roman sailing ships used to pass along the Algarve coast.

Der Tavira Film Club feiert sein 15-jähriges Jubiläum mit einem Konzert des Eric Andersen Trio. Das Konzert wird eine nationale Premiere, denn der renommierte Musiker Andersen hat bisher noch nie in Portugal gespielt. Mit seinen poetischen Songs begeistert der Sänger sein Publikum weltweit. In den frühen 1960ern wurde er in Greenwich Village entdeckt und etablierte sich als Teil der Folk- und Songwriterszene, zusammen mit Phil Ochs, Tom Paxton, Dave Van Ronk, Tom Rush, Jack Elliot, David Blue and Bob Dylan, spielte akustische Gitarre, Klavier und Mundharmonika. Eric Andersen wird auf der Bühne vom Tavira Cineteatro von seiner Frau Inge Andersen (Gesang) begleitet sowie von Michele Gazich (Violine), mit dem er in den letzten Jahren bereits auf Tournee in den USA und Europa war. The Tavira Film Club is celebrating its 15th anniversary with a concert by the renowned Eric Andersen Trio. The concert will be a national premiere since Andersen has never played in Portugal before. Eric Andersen’s poetic songs have entertained and captivated audiences and musicians worldwide. He first came to prominence as a performer in Greenwich Village in the early 1960s and immediately became part of the Village folk and songwriter scene, along with Phil Ochs, Tom Paxton, Dave Van Ronk, Tom Rush, Jack Elliot, David Blue and Bob Dylan. Racing & Music “Acceleration 2014” is a unique 3-day event which combines car racing with a music festival. The main racing attraction is the FA1 Class (formerly A1 GP). A complete series of FA1 vehicles will take up the challenge against each other at ten European race tracks and the races kick off at the Autodrómo Portimão. In addition to the FA1 competition, contests in two car series (MW-V6 Pickup and Legend SuperCup) are also being held. In these racing classes, there are national teams fighting for victory. The races are recognised and approved by the FIA.

The event begins on Friday with training and qualification; in the evening, the music festival “Celebrate the80s & 90s with The Hoff” gets going. In addition to David Hasselhoff, Samantha Fox, Sabrina, 2 Unlimited, Haddaway and others will also be performing; on Saturday evening the musical part comes to a close with songs from a number of popular DJs. Sein Gegner Muse (Barkhad Abdi) konfrontiert ihn während der Geiselnahme stets mit Gedanken zur Globalisierung und ihren Auswirkungen und verteidigt auf diese Weise die Piraterie. Im Hintergrund wird eine Befreiungsaktion vorbereitet, die allerdings nicht ohne Blutvergießen endet. Als Vorlage für den Thriller dienten die Memoiren des Captain Phillips, dessen US-Frachtschiff seit 200 Jahren das erste war, das von Piraten gekapert wurde. Jealous of his friend Polixeno, King Leonte arrests his wife Hermione. In prison, she has a daughter whom the king abandons. The little girl, whose name is Perdita, escapes from prison but Hermine dies. Years later, Polixeno‘s son falls in love with the girl, but Polixeno is against his relationship with a commoner. The young lovers take refuge at King Leonte‘s court, and the king recognises his daughter. Leonte begs his daughter for forgiveness and is filled with remorse for Hermione‘s death. However, she is still alive and returns to the court.

Eifersüchtig wegen seines Freundes Polixeno verhaftet König Leonte seine Frau Hermine. Im Gefängnis bekommt sie eine Tochter, die der König verstösst. Jahre später verliebt sich der Sohn des Polixeno in das Mädchen, aber Polixeno ist gegen die Beziehung mit einer Bürgerlichen. Die jungen Liebenden finden Zuflucht am Hof des Königs Leonte, der die verlorene Tochter wiedererkennt. Leonte bittet seine Tochter um Vergebung und ist voller Reue für den Tod von Hermine. Die ist allerdings noch am Leben und kehrt an den Hof zurück.

– 09.06.2014 Das historische Archiv von Albufeira stellt Bilder des großen politischen Führers Àlvaro Cunhal aus, die er während seiner Inhaftierung in Lissabon von 1950-1959 zeichnete. Die Werke haben keine Titel,der Betrachter versteht die Nachricht, indem er die Zeichnungen „liest“. Menschen sind in seinen Arbeiten ein wichtiges Thema, sowie Arbeit, Kampf, Leid, Elend, Freude, Festlichkeiten und Frauen. The Álvaro Cunhal exhibition is the result of his 11-year imprisonment, 8 of which were in solitary confinement, and this inspired him to make many drawings in his prison cell in Lisbon between 1951 and 1959. The drawings do not have titles, they convey a message that does not need a title to be understood; one “reads” the drawings. – 11.05.2014 Diese internationale Ausstellung, die sich im Rahmen des Europäischen Projekts MARLISCO entwickelt hat, zielt darauf ab, über das wahre Ausmaß der Meeresverschmutzung zu informieren und die Gesellschaft zu sensibilisieren. Weiterhin soll die Ausstellung das soziale Bewusstsein über die Auswirkungen der Meeresverschmutzung erhöhen und mögliche Lösungen für das Problem aufzeigen, damit eine Änderung der Einstellung und des Verhaltens in der Gesellschaft erreicht wird. Abgesehen von Portugal findet die Ausstellung in 14 weiteren europäischen Ländern statt. This international exhibition, developed within the European project MARLISCO, aims to inform and sensitize society about the true scale of the problem of marine pollution. It aims to raise social awareness about the impact of sea pollution and possible solutions to the problem, in order to inspire a change in attitudes and behaviour in society. Apart from Portugal, the exhibition takes place in 14 more European countries.

17:00, – 06.04.2014 Europa- und Weltmeister im Inline-Skating treffen sich am ersten April Wochenende in Lagos zum Saisonauftakt. Die Veranstaltung beginnt am Freitag, den 4. April um 17h und wird am Samstag den 5. April, um 9h30, 14h30 und 19h in der Schule Júlio Dantas fortgesetzt. Am Sonntag Vormittag finden die Wettbewerbe (u.a. Halbmarathon) um 9h auf der Avenida dos Descobrimentos statt. Danach geht es um 14h in der Schule Júlio Dantas weiter. European and World Champions of Inline Skating will get together in Lagos on the first weekend of April to begin the season. Es ist eine Co-Produktion zweier Strukturen, die sich als kuratorische Partnerschaft etabliert hat und eine Möglichkeit bietet, Ressourcen zu teilen. Dies setzt dort an, wo in den vergangenen Jahren bereits ein intensiver Dialog hinsichtlich Sprachen und ästhetischer Werte stattgefunden hat. Electrolegos setzt sich für die Dezentralisierung des Kreises aufstrebender alternativer und experimenteller Projekte ein. Dies basiert auf der Herangehensweise, dass der elektronische Sound ein Motor für alle Electrolegos Projekte agiert. Die Veranstaltung will die Arbeit jener Künstler fördern, die eine enge Beziehung mit dem elektronischen Sound und seinen künstlerischen Qualitäten haben. Electrolegos follows a natural sequence in the development of experimental and alternative projects carried out by LAC and casaBranca during several years in Lagos. This is a co-production project between the two structures that establishes itself as a curatorial partnership as well as a way to share resources, building upon the complicity among languages and aesthetic values already established in previous years. Electrolegos is set on decentralizing the circuit for up and coming alternative and experimental projects. The proposition is set upon the approach to the electronic based sound as an engine of all projects shown at Electrolegos. The event intends to promote the work of artists that have - in their work or outside of it - a close relationship with the electronic sound and its performative qualities. – 30.04.2014 Die Ausstellung mit dem Titel „Großzügiges Land“ zeigt 15 starke und farbenfrohe Werke der niederländischen Künstlerin Else van der Laan, welche seit 2006 in Portugal lebt und arbeitet. Alle Werke sind auf Leinwand mit Acrylfarbe und Mischtechnik gemalt. Die Bilder stehen zum Verkauf zu angemessenen Preisen. Die Ausstellung kann täglich, außer sonntags, besichtigt werden. The exhibition titled “Generous Land“ features 15 strong and colourful works by Dutch artist Else van der Laan who has been living and working in Portugal since 2006. A Naifa ist eine typisch portugiesische Band, die im Jahr 2004 von João und Luis Aguardela Varatojo gegründet und dann von Maria Antonia Mendes ergänzt wurde. Sie haben 4 Alben aufgenommen: „Canções Subterrâneas“ (2004), „3 minutos antes de a Mare encher“ (2006), „Uma inocente inclinação para o mal“ (2008) und „Não se deitam comigo corações obedientes“ (2012). Die Songs von A Naifa basieren auf Gedichten von zeitgenössischen portugiesischen Dichtern, wie zum Beispiel José Luis Peixoto, Adilia Lopes, Rui Lage, Margarida Vale de Gato, Maria Rodrigues Teixeira, Renata Correia Botelho, Tiago Gomes. Im Jahr 2010, nach dem Tod von João Aguardela, wurde ein Buch mit DVD unter dem Titel, „Esta depressão que me anima“ veröffentlicht, gefolgt von einer landesweiten Tribut-Tour. Die Band wurde dann ergänzt durch Sandra Baptista am Bass und Samuel Palitos am Schlagzeug. A Naifa is a typical Portuguese music band. Started in 2004 by João and Luis Aguardela Varatojo,, and joined by Maria Antonia Mendes. Von der blauen Blume zum weißen Stoff: Der Kreislauf des Flachses From the blue flower to the white fabric: the cycle of flax

09:30 – 15:30 Cachopo war einmal eine großes Weberei-Zentrum in der Algarve mit bis zu 70 Webern. „Dona Otilia“ ist diejenige, die diese Tätigkeit am Leben hält und mit ihr werden wir mehr über die komplexen Kreislauf des Flachses erfahren. Wir werden die Pflanze auf dem Feld begutachten, sie ernten, sie verarbeiten und schließlich in einem traditionellen Webstuhl weben. Wir werden auch einen Sattler und einen Schmied besuchen - zwei Handwerke, die vom aussterben bedroht sind in diesem Dorf. Traditionelles Picknick inklusive. Cachopo was once a major weaving centre in the Algarve and not too long ago had around 70 weavers. “Dona Otilia” is the one that keeps this activity alive and with her we will find out more about the complex cycle of flax. We’re going to see the plant in the field, collect it, work it and finally weave in a traditional loom. We will visit the saddler and blacksmith, two crafts about to disappear in the village.
