Now in its 10th year, the International Jazz Festival in Lagoa enjoys a loyal following and has made a name for itself on the national and international scenes. All the way through the nine annual events which have taken place, after its debut in 2003, the specialist press has always been really positive and the performing artists, along with the international audience, have expressed their satisfaction and appreciation of the hospitality and technical standards. After a 4-year break, the international jazz festival returns this year to the Algarve and has chosen a unique and magical place for the occasion: the fountains of Estômbar. This 10th festival is characterised by its diversity and quality, keeping in line with the aim of presenting different approaches in the field of jazz and its genealogy.
Das internationale Jazz-Festival von Lagoa erfreut sich inzwischen einer treuen Anhängerschaft und hat sich auf nationaler und internationaler Ebene einen Namen gemacht. Über die neun, jährlich stattgefundenen Veranstaltungen, die im Jahre 2003 begannen, äußerte sich die Fachpresse stets positiv. Die auftretenden Künstler und das internationale Publikum drückten ihre Zufriedenheit und Anerkennung über die Gastfreundschaft und technischen Bedingungen aus. Nach 4 Jahren Pause kehrt das Jazz-Festival dieses Jahr an die Algarve zurück und hat sich für die Ausrichtung einen einzigartigen, magischen Ort ausgesucht: die Quellen von Estômbar. Die diesjährige 10. Ausgabe zeichnet sich besonders durch ihre Vielfalt und Qualität aus und hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, die verschiedenen Spielarten des Jazz und seiner Genealogie zu präsentieren.

FESTIVAL 5th June, 10 pm PianoBatuque (Argentina/Portugal) This line-up is the consequence of the piano of Pablo Lapidusas meeting up with the drums of Joel Silva. The duo mainly performs original themes on which improvisation plays a major role. Pablo Lapidusas, with his Argentine-Brazilian roots, has appeared in prestigious theatres and jazz clubs in Brazil and Europe and has lined up alongside musicians like Marcelo D2, Wanda Sá, Edu Lobo, Carlos Malta, and Bebel Gilberto. Joel Silva, from Portugal, has worked on various projects together with Carlos Barretto, Big Band H.C.P., Paulo de Carvalho, Júlio Resende, João Paulo Esteves da Silva, Perico Sambeat and Maria João and has played at several European jazz festivals. 5. Juni, 22 Uhr PianoBatuque (Argentinien/Portugal) Diese Konstellation ist aus einem Zusammentreffen des Pianos von Pablo Lapidusas und des Schlagzeugs von Joel Silva hervorgegangen. Das Duo beschäftigt sich überwiegend mit Originalthemen, bei denen Improvisationen eine tragende Rolle spielen. Pablo Lapidusas mit argentinisch-brasilianischen Wurzeln ist in renommierten Theatern und Jazz-Clubs in Brasilien
und Europa aufgetreten und hatte Musiker wie Marcelo D2, Wanda Sá, Edu Lobo, Carlos Malta und Bebel Gilberto an seiner Seite. Der Portugiese Joel Silva hat an verschiedenen Projekten zusammen mit Carlos Barretto, Big Band H.C.P., Paulo de Carvalho, Júlio Resende, João Paulo Esteves da Silva, Perico Sambeat und Maria João mitgewirkt und war bei verschiedenen europäischen Jazz-Festivals präsent. 5th June, 10 pm Torunsky Brothers (Switzerland) The duo that started up in 2011 is a unique combination between the serious and percussive sounding bass clarinet, played by Piotr Torunsky, and the phrasing and improvisation of Greg Torunsky on alto saxophone. In 2012, the two brothers were awarded the “Hustinx Prijs” music prize. Their repertoire is based on themes by great composers presented by the duo in a sophisticated jazz language which creates a remarkable interaction with the audience. 5. Im Jahr 2012 wurden die Brüder mit dem Musikpreis „Hustinx Prijs“ ausgezeichnet. Ihr Repertoire basiert auf Themen großer Komponisten, die das Duo in einer raffinierten Jazz-Sprache vorträgt und dabei eine bemerkenswerte Interaktion mit dem Publikum herstellt. 6th June, 10 pm Thierry Eliez (France) Thierry is a complex and versatile musician who is considered by many to be one of Europe‘s leading pianists. He has the ability to integrate a wide variety of music styles; Brazilian sounds with the old jazz of the “chanson francais”, blues and progressive rock. He has played jazz with names such as Didier Lockwood, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and the Andre Ceccarelli Trio and worked on projects such as “Ultra Marine” or “The Sindbad”. In France, he has worked, among others, with Charles Aznavour, Catherine Lara, Alain Chamfort, Patrick Bruel, Johnny Hallyday, Ceilin Poggi. Den Jazz spielte er schon mit Größen wie Didier Lockwood, Dee Dee Bridgewater und dem Andre Ceccarelli Trio und arbeitete an Projekten wie „Ultra Marine“ oder „The Sindbad“ mit. LAGOA JAZZ FESTIVAL 7th June, 10 pm Marta Hugon 5teto (Portugal) Marta Hugon is a paragon of quality in the national jazz scene with an unmistakable voice and presence. She emphasises her empathy with the audience and shows how important it is for music to reinvent itself constantly with the aim of creating one surprise after the other. After the release of her new single in January last year, Marta Hugon is now back on stage with a new show which goes under this wonderful title: “Beautiful Melodies, Terrible Things”. 7. Juni, 22 Uhr Marta Hugon 5teto (Portugal) Marta Hugon gilt mit ihrer eindringlichen Stimme und Präsenz als Referenz in der internationalen Jazz-Szene. Sie betont ihre Empathie mit dem Publikum und zeigt die Notwendigkeit für ständige musikalische Neuerfindung, um immer wieder zu überraschen. Nach der Veröffentlichung ihrer neuen Single im Januar vergangenen Jahres ist Marta Hugon mit ihrer neuen Show zurück auf der Bühne: „Beautiful Melodies, Terrible Things“.

This contest, which has revealed new fado talents every year, is open to anyone who wants to show off their talent. This is the final the competition. There were four rounds, followed by a semi-final and now the final. Applicants are divided into 2 age categories: junior (10 to 17 years) and senior (18 and older). Fado singer Rodrigo has been invited to this year’s final. Dieser Wettbewerb, der jedes Jahr neue Fado-Talente offenbart, ist offen für alle, die ihr Talent zur Schau stellen möchten. Dies ist das Finale des Wettbewerbs, bei denen es 4 Runden gab, gefolgt von einem Halbfinale und Finale. The Flutes Ensemble was formed in 1994 by students from the School of Music in the municipality of Loulé, under Professor Francisco Rosado, in order to promote the historical repertoire of this type of instrumental training. During their festival performance, pieces from various authors, including Jacques Moderne, Pierre Phalèse, Robert Bateman, Jacob van Eyck, Arcangelo Corelli, Georg Philipp Telemann, Joseph Bodin de Boismortier and Matthias Maute will be interpreted. Das Flöten-Ensemble wurde im Jahr 1994 von Studenten der Musikschule von Loulé bei Professor Francisco Rosado gebildet, um das historische Repertoire dieser Art der instrumentalen Ausbildung zu fördern. Während des Festivals werden Stücke von Jacques Moderne, Pierre Phalèse, Robert Bateman, Jacob van Eyck, Arcangelo Corelli, Georg Philipp Telemann, Joseph Bodin de Boismortier und Matthias Maute interpretiert. This project is directed by resident pianists in the Algarve, with the emphasis on their main musical and stylistic influences. Their music is characterised by modern jazz. Their repertoire demonstrates a love for Iberian music and refers back to musicians such as the Andalusians Chano Dominguez and Chick Corea, as well as the irregular rhythms of musicians like Hermeto Pascoal and Dave Brubeck. FESTIVAL MED The official slogan of the festival is “Music and Much More” and this only hints at what Loulé has to offer over the 3-day event. Along with world-class music, the town in the hinterland presents a varied programme with culinary demonstrations, lots of fine art, crafts, workshops and much more. The beautiful old town within the walls of Loulé offers a perfect backdrop for this cultural event, which was first held in 2004. The main attractions are, of course, the top-class concerts, spread across all genres from different parts of the world, but also the dance performances and

street theatre are well worth seeing. On the culinary side, there are many restaurants from different cultures where visitors can enjoy a variety of traditional foods. This year, the organisers set themselves the goal of developing the festival while retaining the innovation and uniqueness, so that it will continue to be a high quality event which already has a fixed place on the interna tional calendar of world music festivals. Der offizielle Slogan des Festivals lautet „Musik und viel mehr” und lässt nur erahnen, was Loulé an den drei Veranstaltungstagen zu bieten hat. Die Stadt im Hinterland zeigt neben Welt-Musik der Spitzenklasse ein buntes Programm mit kulinarischen Vorführungen, jeder Menge bildender Kunst, Kunsthandwerk, Workshops und vieles mehr. Die schöne Altstadt von Loulé bietet eine perfekte Kulisse für dieses kulturelle Ereignis, das erstmals 2004 veranstaltet wurde. Hauptattraktionen sind natürlich die erstklassigen Konzerte quer durch alle Genres aus verschiedenen Teilen der Welt, aber auch die Tanzaufführungen und Straßentheater
sind durchaus sehenswert. Kulinarisch werden die Besucher mit traditionellen Speisen zahlreicher Restaurants aus unterschiedlichen Kulturen verwöhnt. Auch dieses Jahr haben sich die Organisatoren das Ziel gesetzt, das Festival weiterzuentwickeln und die Innovation und Besonderheit zu erhalten, damit es auch weiterhin eine hochwertige Veranstaltung bleibt, die bereits einen festen Platz auf dem internationalen Kalender der Weltmusikfestivals hat. (Niger) In his youth, as a member from one of the North African Tuareg tribes, he spent many a long hour alone with his animals practising on the guitar. Later he worked as a musician and as a pastor in the desert. He is now best known as the “Hendrix of the desert”. A MÃE E O MAR The authors took on this documentary on a search into a genuine and long-lost myth along the beach of Vila Chã in Portugal. They were looking for the fisherwomen, the socalled sea women, in one of the few places in the world where they have female skippers. But where have they got to these days? And where are the 120 hand-built fishing boats? Only 9 of them are left and only one fisherwoman. This film, whose title translates as “The Mother and the Sea”, documents a love for fishing and the love of the sea in this land of courageous sailors. The evening will focus on storytelling, the Portuguese guitar and the accordion. The stories will come from several continents, an array of sources and in various languages. Storytelling awakens more than emotions, it stimulates the cognitive, experiential and creative side. This is an open evening for the community, where the public can savour world flavours, get culinary tips from various countries whilst listening to words in the moonlight. Dieser Abend wird sich dem Geschichten erzählen, der portugiesischen Gitarre und dem Akkordeon widmen. Die Geschichten stammen aus mehreren Kontinenten, sind von unterschiedlicher Herkunft und in verschiedenen Sprachen. Geschichten zu erzählen weckt mehr als nur Emotionen, es stimuliert die kognitive, experimentelle und kreative Seite. The female member of this flamenco ensemble is the dancer Luna Fabiola, a choreographer and teacher of flamenco dance at Fundación de Arte Flamenco. The male part is performed by Oscar de los Reyes who was a member of the dance companies Pilar Tavora, Farruquito and Antonio Canales. In 2008, he won the National Flamenco Dance Prize “La Perla de Cádiz”.Throughout his career he has collaborated with important names such as Esperanza Fernández, Israel Galván and Miguel Poveda. Der weibliche Teil des Flamenco-Ensembles ist Tänzerin Luna Fabiola, Choreografin und Lehrerin des Flamenco-Tanzes an der Fundación de Arte Flamenco. Manon Lescaut ist eine Oper von Giacomo Puccini, die 1893 in Turin uraufgeführt wurde. Mehrere Autoren waren an dem Libretto nach dem gleichnamigen Roman von Abbé Prévost beteiligt. Der Komponist porträtiert in seiner ersten Oper, die ihm viel Erfolg brachte, eine Frau, die alles hat und doch wieder verliert. Das Märchen von einem Mädchen, das zum Modell wird und doch Mädchen bleibt, passt wunderbar in die heutige Zeit. Puccini tat seiner Heldin gleich, indem er sich überall bediente: Er zog dasWerk von Verdi heran und ergänzte es mit Motiven, die er u.a. bei Wagner fand. Manon Lescaut is an opera by Giacomo Puccini, which had its premiere in Turin in 1893. Several authors contributed to the libretto, based on the novel by Abbé Prévost. In his first opera, one which brought him great success, the composer portrays a woman who has everything and yet loses it all. The tale of a girl who becomes a model, and yet remains a girl, fits perfectly in today’s world. In his heroine, Puccini also found himself again taking ideas from many different places: he took the orchestra from Verdi and supplemented it with motifs which he found in Wagner, amongst others. A small room whose walls bear witness to the past is filled by the sound of a typewriter and a cello. This is André and Dorine, an elderly couple in a vacuum, was caused by routine. What once aroused passion for each other, has turned to indifference or even just a topic for discussion. The audience observes how the typewriter and cello are no longer in harmony, but have become weapons with which they annoy each other. Then an event occurs which breaks this monotony: disease, Alzheimer’s, the great eater of memories and identity. This is also the beginning of a new and different relationship between André and Dorine. It is a journey through memory with the desire to capture what, for André, can only be reached in one way: by writing - writing to remember who they were, so they do not forget who they are. Ein kleiner Raum, dessen Wände die Vergangenheit tragen, wird durch das Geräusch einer Schreibmaschine und eines Cellos gefüllt. Hier befinden sich André und Dorine, ein älteres Ehepaar, in einem Vakuum, dass durch Routine verursacht wurde. Was einmal Leidenschaft füreinander weckte, wurde zu Gleichgültigkeit oder sogar zum Thema für Diskussionen. Das Publikum wird Zeuge, wie die Schreibmaschine und Violoncello nicht mehr in Harmonie erklingen, sondern wie sie zu Waffen werden, mit denen man sich gegenseitig ärgert. Dann geschieht ein Ereignis, welches diese Monotonie durchbricht: Krankheit, Alzheimer, der große Auslöscher von Erinnerungen und Identität. Dies ist auch der Beginn einer neuen und anderen Beziehung zwischen André und Dorine. Es ist eine Reise durch die Erinnerung mit dem Wunsch festzuhalten, was fur André nur auf eine Art zu erreichen ist: durch das Schreiben - Schreiben, um sich zu erinnern, wer sie waren, damit sie nicht vergessen, wer sie sind. Kokoro tells the story of three characters immersed in a web of paper and cardboard. The UATI - Universidade do Algarve para a Terceira Idade, presents the work of the Departments of Theatre, Choir Singing and Rhythmic Gymnastics. With its unique style, this show weaves together episodes of humour, reflection, dance and singing. In the first part three small plays will be presented: “The Plague”, an original by Maria do Ó, a student of UATI, which is followed by “Suicide Hotline” and “Honey Drop” by Coral Leon Chancerel. In the second part, students of the choir group take to the stage. The show closes with the Rhythmic Gymnastics Group (dances), directed by Isilda Palm. Die „Universidade do Algarve para a Terceira Idade“ stellt die Arbeit der Abteilungen für Theater-, Chorgesang und Rhythmische Sportgymnastik vor. Auf einzigartige Weise verbindet diese Vorstellung Begebenheiten von Humor, Gedanken, Tanz und Gesang. Im ersten Teil werden drei kleine Theaterstücke präsentiert: „Die Pest”, gefolgt von „Selbstmord-Hotline” und „Honigtropfen”. Im zweiten Teil gehört die Bühne den Studenten der Chorgruppe. Álvaro Cunhal’s experiences are the result of having been imprisoned for eleven years, 8 of which were in isolation, and that inspired many drawings between 1951 and 1959 in a prison cell in Lisbon. The drawings do not have titles; they convey a message that does not need titles to be understood by anyone who can “read” the drawings. People are an important theme, along with work, the struggle, suffering, misery, joy, festivity and women. González Bravo was born in 1944 in Badajoz in Spain but has lived in Portugal since 1970. Since 1981 he has been a regular and highly successful exhibitor in individual and group exhibitions not only in Portugal, but also in Germany and in France where he published an edition containing many of his works entitled “Euvres 1990 – 2000”. The artistic style of González Bravo reflects the great 20th Century movement of informalism art, a period of European art which mirrored that of American abstract expressionism. His works are noted for their progressive adoption of aesthetic abstractionism, with figurative elements melding with abstract expressionism and the spontaneous use of materials to create memorable pieces that challenge the viewer to reconsider their established preconceptions of abstract art. González Bravo wurde 1944 in Badajoz in Spanien geboren, jedoch lebt er seit 1970 in Portugal. Seit 1981 stellt er regelmäßig und sehr erfolgreich in Einzel-und Gruppenausstellungen in Portugal aus, aber auch in Deutschland und in Frankreich, wo er eine Ausgabe mit vielen seiner Werke unter dem Titel „Euvres 1990 - 2000“ veröffentlicht hat. Der künstlerische Stil von González Bravo spiegelt die große Bewegung der Informalismus-Kunst des 20. Jahrhunderts wieder, welche eine Periode der europäischen Kunst ist, die dem des amerikanischen abstrakten Expressionismus gleich kommt. Seine Werke sind durch ihre moderne Übernahme der ästhetischen Abstraktion geprägt, bei denen bildliche Elemente mit abstraktem Expressionismus verschmelzen und durch die spontane Verwendung von Materialien unvergessliche Stücke geschaffen werden, die den Betrachter herausfordern, etablierte Vorurteile über abstrakte Kunst zu überdenken. DA TERRA E DO MAR… The well known and popular museum is celebrating its 6th anniversary this year, and to mark this occasion the members of AAN (Algarve Artists Network) have been invited to exhibit their artwork, consisting of installations and paintings that are all in some way inspired by life in the Algarve, hence the title which translates as, “From Land and Sea”. These art works mirror the passion and affection that the 19 international artists, coming from the UK, Portugal, France, Ger-
many, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Poland and even Japan, feel for the country they have chosen to live in or were born in, and how every artist finds his/her way to translate these feelings into a very individual pictorial “language“. The theme of this exhibition also has a strong connection to the other show that the museum will be presenting at the same time, “O Mediteraneo tão perto”.
Anlässlich seines 6. Geburtstags hat das bekannte und beliebte Museum von Portimão die Mitglieder des AAN (Algarve Artists Network) zu einer Ausstellung ihrer Werke eingeladen. Die gezeigten Arbeiten umfassen sowohl Installationen als auch Gemälde, die alle in irgendeiner Weise vom Leben an der Algarve inspiriert worden sind, daher der übersetzte Titel „Vom Land und vom Meer…“. Die Kunstwerke spiegeln die Verbundenheit und Passion wie der, die die 19 internationalen KünstlerInnen aus Por-
tugal, England, Schottland, der Schweiz, Polen, Frankreich, Holland, Deutschland und sogar Japan für das Land empfinden, in dem sie leben oder in dem sie geboren wurden, und zeigen die Art, wie jeder Künstler diese Empfindungen in seine ganz eigene Bildsprache umsetzt. Das Thema dieser Ausstellung schlägt auch eine Brücke zu der gleichzeitig stattfindenden Show “O Mediteraneo tão perto”.

An exhibition of typical dolls (Bonecas de Juta) from the region of Martin Longo. Made out of burlap over a wire frame body. Their clothes are made of cotton and linen. The dolls present typical scenes of life from the villages and are made by a group of women, who created the association Flor d’Agulha in 1986. Eine Ausstellung von Puppen (Bonecas de Juta), die typisch für die Region um Martin Longo sind. Sie bestehen aus Jute, die über einem Drahtrahmenkörper befestigt wird und Kleidung aus Baumwolle und Leinen tragen. Casa Rural da Ermida de Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe
The chapel is one of the rare examples of medieval architecture, because it was one of the few buildings of this time that survived the catastrophic earthquake of 1755. The chapel is located on the EN 125 between Budens and Raposeira. Die Kapelle ist eines der seltenen Beispiele mittelalterlicher Architektur der Algarve, da sie als eines der wenigen Bauwerke aus dieser Zeit das schwere Erdbeben von 1755 überlebt hat.
