For many people, spring is the most beautiful season of the year in the Algarve. Nature reappears in a lush green and in full bloom, the beaches are empty and the sun chases away the rain of recent months. While it used to be mainly individualists who visited the south of Portugal in the off-season, the Algarve is now considered a popular destination well before Easter for European tourists who want to escape the bad weather at home. They have barely arrived before they put their thick sweaters into their suitcases and act as if it’s summer - to the great astonishment of the Portuguese, who do not yet seem to have discovered the spring as a tourist season. But the Algarve in spring is attractive not only for its friendly climate, but also with its really great value hotel prices and a wide range of events, as you can see in events pages for March. If you look more closely, in addition to the carnival programme which dominates, there are also some quieter, strongly regional events which you will search for in vain in the main tourist season. Enjoy the spring!

Für viele ist der Frühling die schönste Jahreszeit an der Algarve. Die Natur zeigt sich in einem saftigen Grün und in voller Blütenpracht, die Strände sind leer und die Sonne verdrängt den Regen der letzten Monate. Waren es früher meist Individualisten, die den Süden Portugals in der Nebensaison besuchten, gilt die Algarve inzwischen auch vor Ostern als beliebtes Reiseziel unter europäischen Touristen, die dem Schmuddelwetter in ihrer Heimat entfliehen wollen. Kaum gelandet, verstauen die Neuankömmlinge ihre dicken Pullover im Gepäck und machen auf Sommer – zur großen Verwunderung der Portugiesen, die den Frühling bisher nicht als Reisesaison entdeckt zu haben scheinen. Dabei lockt die Algarve im Frühjahr nicht nur mit ihrem freundlichen Klima, sondern auch mit besonders attraktiven Übernachtungspreisen und einem umfassenden Veranstaltungsangebot, wie unsere Agenda für den Monat März beweist. Wer genauer hinschaut, findet neben dem dominierenden Karnevals programm auch einige leisere, stark regional geprägte Veranstaltungen, die man zur touristischen Hauptsaison vergeblich sucht. Närrisch (fast) von A bis Z Karneval ist eine übermütige Zeit der Aus gelassenheit und Freude. Drei außergewöhnliche Tage, in der portugiesischen Definition: „a vida são dois dias e o Carnaval são três“ – das Leben währt zwei Tage, der Karneval währt drei. Zu ihm gehört allerlei Landestypisches Carnaval: Herkunft ungewiss. Ist es nun von carne vale (Adeus, Fleisch!) abzuleiten oder von carne levamen – fleisch(liche) Unterdrückung? Von hier ist es nicht weit bis zur Fastenzeit. Eine vierzigtägige Pause von der Genusssucht des übrigen Jahres. Katholischen Religionslehrern war die allgemeine Lust – nicht nur, aber auch beim Essen – stets ein Dorn im Auge. Das Quaresma, die Zeit des Fastens, zwang zur Besinnung oder schärfte den Erfindungsgeist, wie man ohne Fleisch(liches) den Hunger bewältig. Carrus navalis: Booten ähnliche Fahrzeuge zogen vor Frühlingsanfang durch die Straßen der Antike – eine weitere Wortdeutung. Diese Karren verteilten zu den Dionysosfesten Wein an das römische Volk. Auch diese Form der flüssigen Nahrung dürfte stimmungsfördernd gewirkt haben. Enterro do Bacalhau:

In Portugal begräbt man zu Karneval nicht nur den Winter, sondern symbolisch eine unbeliebte Persönlichkeit oder ein Tier, meistens aber Bacalhau, den allgegenwärtigen Stockfisch. Danach wird mit einem fröhlichen Festzug der Anfang eines neuen Lebens gefeiert.

Carnival is a time for high-spirited exuberance and joy. Three extraordinary days, defined like this in Portuguese: “a vida são dois dias e o Carnaval são três” – life lasts two days, the Carnival lasts three. A mix of what is typical to Portugal Carnaval: Origin uncertain. Does it maybe come from carne vale (goodbye meat!) or perhaps from carne levamen – a rest from meat? From here on it is not long until Lent. A forty-day break from the indulgence of the rest of the year. For teachers of the Catholic religion, pleasures in general not only but including food – had always been a thorn in their side. The Quaresma, the time of fasting, forced people into contemplation, or sharpened their inventiveness for ways to address their hunger without meat. Carrus navalis: Boat-like vehicles would be driven through

the streets of the ancient world just before the beginning of spring - another possible interpretation of the word. These carts gave out wine to the Roman people during the festivals of Dionysus. This form of liquid nourishment is also said to have had a mood-enhancing effect.

Enterro do Bacalhau: In Portugal at Carnival time, not only is the winter buried but also, symbolically, some unpopular public figure or an animal; but mostly it is the bacalhau, the ubiquitous salt cod. After that there is a joyous procession to celebrate the beginning of a new life. t

Festejos carnevalescos: Die ersten portugiesischen Karnevals umzüge fanden im 15. Jahrhundert statt. Es ging so aggressiv zu, dass 1817 Benimmregeln aufgestellt wurden, um den wüsten Schabernack zu zähmen. Zu dieser Zeit kamen die Karnevalswagen auf und mit ihnen die Batalha das Flores, ein Blumenkorso, der bis heute, etwa in Loulé, Tradition hat. Gigantones: Die Riesen stammen aus den Fronleichnamsprozessionen des späten Mittelalters. Am Herrgottstag gab es einen Festzug, bei dem die Riesen meistens religiöse, mythologische oder historische Figuren darstellten. Die Gigantones gehören heute zum Faschingsumzug, wo sie Politiker und Promis karikieren. Cabeçudos: Riesige Kopfmasken, deren Herkunft wohl in den Theatermasken der griechischen Antike liegt, sind als ein Erbe des Überseehandels in den portugiesischen Karneval gelangt; auch von Expeditionen nach Italien dürften Anregungen gekommen sein.

Máscara: Kein Karneval ohne Maskerade. Was im heidnischen Totenkult durch überzeichnete Darstellung die Trauer der Hinterbliebenen und den Wert des Verblichenen betonte, ist heute reines Versteckspiel. Besonders das Gesicht sollte gut verborgen sein, denn ohne Maske würden manche Scherze der Feigheit (oder auch Resten guten Geschmacks) zum Opfer fallen.

Rei e Rainha: Prinz Karneval und seine Braut: Vielerorts in Portugal ist die Krönung des Königs und der Königin der Höhepunkt des Festes. Anderswo wird am Aschermittwoch die Beerdigung einer traditionellen Karnevalsfigur gefeiert: Rei Momo, Gott der Respektlosen aus der griechischrömischen Mythologie. Saturnais: Die Anfänge des Karnevals gehen zurück auf die römischen Saturnalien. Während dieser Feste zu Ehren des Saatgottes mit der Sichel wurde die gesellschaftliche Ordnung kurzfristig umgestoßen; Herren und Sklaven tauschten die Kleidung. Nach dem Treiben hatte sich jedermann ausgetobt, und mit dem Frühlingsanfang konnte ein neues Erntejahr beginnen. Dann kam das Christentum über Rom, die Götter gerieten in Vergessenheit, doch den Spaß am Feiern und am Rollentausch ließ sich das Volk nicht austreiben. Zés Pereiras:

Würde der Name übersetzt, stünde Josef Birnbaum mit seinem typisch portugiesischen Namen Pate für die so bezeichneten Trommler und Dudelsackspieler, die bei den Karnevalsumzügen mitziehen. Weiße Hose, weißes Hemd, rote Schärpe und Pudelmütze, manchmal auch ein rotes Tuch um den Hals und eine Blume im Haar, so sollten sie aussehen. Doch im Karneval ist alles erlaubt und so hat jede Gruppe ein anderes schrilles Outfit.

Festejos carnevalescos: The first Portuguese Carnival pro-

cessions took place in the 15th century. They were so overly aggressive that, in 1817, some rules of etiquette were established to tame the wild pranks. At this time, the Carnival floats made their appearance and with them the Batalha das Flores, a flower parade, which to this day is a tradition, for example in Loulé.

Gigantones: The giants come from the Corpus Christi processions of the late Middle Ages. On that day, there would be a procession, in which the giants usually represented religious, mythological or historical figures. The Gigantones now belong to the Carnival parade, where they are used to caricature politicians and celebrities. Cabeçudos: Huge head masks, whose origin probably goes back to the theatrical masks of Ancient Greece, have become part of the Portuguese Carnival as a legacy of overseas trade; some of the inspiration for them probably came from expeditions to Italy, too. Máscara: No masquerade, no Carnival. What used to empha-

sise the grief of the bereaved and the importance of the deceased in pagan death cults with their exaggerated representations, has today become simply a game of hide and seek. In particular, one’s face has to be well hidden because, without the mask, some pranksters would be deterred by cowardice (or whatever remains of good taste).

Rei e Rainha: Carnival prince and his bride: in many places in Portugal, the coronation of the king and the queen is the highlight of the festival. Elsewhere, the burial of a traditional Carnival figure is celebrated on Ash Wednesday: Rei Momo, the god of mockery in Graeco-Roman mythology.

urnalia. During these festivals, in honour of the god of fertility with his sickle, the social order was reversed for a short period and masters and slaves would swap clothes. After these events, everyone had had a chance to let off steam and, with the beginning of spring, a new farming year could start. Then Christianity took over in Rome and the gods were forgotten, but the people did not want to do without the fun and celebrations of this time of role reversal.

Zés Pereiras: If the name were translated, Joseph Pear would be a typical Portuguese namesake for the so-called drummers and pipers who accompany the Carnival processions. White trousers, a white shirt, a red sash and bobble hat, sometimes a red scarf around their necks and a flower in their hair, that’s what they should look like. Doch sind auf dem schwarzen Kontinent noch immer weite Gebiete unerforscht, auch wenn sie formal Kolonialbesitz des einen oder anderen Staates sind. Portugal beherrscht die Kolonien Angola und Mosambik. Beide Länder grenzen an Ozeane, ersteres liegt am Atlantik, das andere am Indischen Ozean. Zwischen den Grenzen im Landesinneren lag ein breiter Streifen unerschlossenen Landes, das sich noch keine Nation angeeignet hatte. Die portugiesischen Kolonialherren beschlossen, das Gebiet ihrem Hoheitsgebiet einzuverschreiben und die beiden Kolonien miteinander durch einen breiten Korridor zu verbinden. Kartographen fertigten eine Landkarte mit dem neuen Gebilde an. Die gesamte von Portugal beanspruchte Zone wurde rosa eingefärbt. Der Maler Carlos Reis hat 1903 die berühmt gewordene mapa corde-rosa als Glorifizierung des Imperiums in Öl gemalt. Die Darstellung eines afrikanischen Traums hängt heute im Lissabonner Museu Militar.

The Portuguese colonial rulers decided to register this area as their territory and to connect the two colonies together via a wide corridor. Cartographers produced a map with this new entity. The complete area occupied by Portugal was coloured pink. In 1903, the artist Carlos Reis painted the now famous mapa cor-de-rosa as a glorification of the Empire in oil. This depiction of an African dream hangs today in Lisbon Museu Militar. The plan displeased the British colonialists in the neighbouring country, formerly known as Rhodesia.

Damals brach eine nie gekannte Welle des Patriotismus aus: Die Portugiesen formierten sich und bekannten sich kollektiv zu ihren Interessen. Rasch entstanden Frei zeitvereine, Verbände von Handwerkern, Händlern, Künstlern und die Freiwillige Feuerwehr. Richter, Angehörige des Klerus, Stadt verordnete, Eisenbahnangestellte, Militärs, aber auch Fabrikarbeiter, Journalisten und Lehrer – alle hatten ihre Standesorganisation und traten bei zahlreichen Manifestationen mit Vereinsfahne oder Emblem auf. Andere waren an ihrer jeweiligen Berufskleidung zu erkennen oder führten allegorisch geschmückte Wagen. So zogen sie durch Straßen, vereinten sich zu Volksfesten. Doch neben der organisierten Präsenz bildeten sich anarchistische Formen der Meinungsbekundung. Der Gegenpol der patriotischen Demonstrationen von 1890 war, was die Reiseschriftstellerin Maria de Rattazzi in ihrer ironischen Betrachtung der portugiesischen Oberschicht Portugal a vol d´oiseaux (Portugal aus der Vogelperspektive) als „die einzig wirklich nationale Demonstration“ bezeichnete: „Der Karneval“. Der Dichter Abílio Guerra Junqueiro hatte vorgeschlagen, 1890 keinen Karneval zu feiern, sondern „statt Tagen voller Spott und Farce, Heiterkeit und Ungezwungenheit“, drei Tage in „Sack und Asche“ zu gehen und „Europa ein Volk zeigen, das beleidigt und vergewaltigt in seinen Rechten, sich in seinem Schmerz und Stolz vereinigt, während der übrige Kontinent sich im Reiche von Ulk und Hohn versammelt“. Rasch geplante Historienmärsche scheiterten dann an der Bürokratie. So beherrschte auch am Karnevalsdienstag nach dem schmachvollen Rückzug hinter Englands Forderungen Jubel, Trubel und Heiterkeit Portugals Straßen. Allein in Lissabons Unterstadt kamen anschließend über dreißig Personen ins Hospital. Auf den Flaniermeilen des Bürgertums gab es gesittete Umzüge mit Fantasiefiguren und Kostümen. Von geschmückten Wagen wurden Bonbons in die Menge geworfen. Der Kehraus folgte am Aschermittwoch: Das Volk zog zum städtischen Gerichtsgebäude, wo die besonders Übermütigen vom Vortag dem Richter vorgeführt wurden. Mit ihren lädierten Masken wurden sie zum traurigen Ziel der Spötter.

However, swiftly planned historical marches failed due to the bureaucracy. Consequently, Portugal’s streets were also given over to jubilation, bustle and gaiety on Shrove Tuesday, even after the ignominious concession to the demands of the English. In Lisbon’s lower city alone, more than thirty people ended up in hospital. On the boulevards of the bourgeoisie, there were civilised parades with fantasy characters and costumes. Sweets were thrown into the crowd from decorated floats. The finale followed on Ash Wednesday: the people went to the city’s courthouse where the most outrageous partakers from the previous day were brought before the judge. An Liebeserklärungen mangelt es dieser Stadt nicht. Manche zählen die Kunstschätze in den Kirchen auf, wie die im 13. Jahrhundert über einer Moschee erbauten Igreja Matriz. Andere erfreuen sich eher am Profanen: Am Einkaufen in der Markthalle

ie eine Riesentorte wirkt die Markthalle in Loulé dank ihrer zwiebelförmigen Ecktürme und einer sattsüßen Rosafarbe: Algarvischneoarabesker Stil vom besten. Hier herrscht täglich Betrieb wie in einem Souk. Lauthals wird feilgeboten, was das Land derzeit an Obst, Gemüse, Fleisch und Würsten und die Küste an Fisch und Meeresfrüchten hergibt. Auch rund um die Halle wird gehandelt. Und samstags geht es in der Stadt sogar noch turbulenter zu. Dann lockt nämlich zusätzlich der Zigeunermarkt – ein lebendig lautes Kaufhaus auf Klapptischen und unter Schattenzelten. Von Jeans bis Slips, von Sonnenbrille bis Plastikschüssel, vom Destilliergerät bis zum Zaumzeug für Esel und Pferde findet sich alles, was das Herz begehrt. Nirgendwo in der Algarve sei das maurische Erbe so lebendig wie in Loulé. Dem kommt man auf die Spur, wenn man sich innerhalb des Burgfrieds der alten Sarazenenfestung treiben lässt. Vom Markt sind das nur ein paar Schritte entfernt. Türen und Tore zu vielen Werkstätten

Markt Marke t There is no shortage of people who declare their love for this city. Some because of the art treasures in the churches, such as in the Igreja Matriz, built over a mosque in the 13th century. Others prefer the profane: shopping in the market hall The market hall in Loulé looks like a giant cake thanks to its onion-shaped corner towers and a lush pink colour: the Algarve-arabesque style at its best. Business goes on here every day just like in a souq. Shopkeepers declare at the tops of their voices what the countryside currently has to offer in fruits, vegetables, meats and sausages and what fish and seafood the coast has for sale. Deals are going on all around the hall too. And on Saturdays it is even more turbulent in the city. That’s when the Gypsy Market is held to tempt you - a loud and lively open-air department store on folding tables, with tents for shade. From jeans to panties, from sunglasses to plastic bowls, from distilling equipment to bridles for donkeys and horses, you will find everything your heart desires. Nowhere in the Algarve is the Moorish heritage as alive as in Loulé. You start to discover this the moment you go wandering around the keep of the old Saracen fortress. stehen offen, emsiger Lärm durchweht die Gassen; da wird genagelt und geschliffen, gehobelt und gesägt, geschweißt und getrieben. Ruhig den Kopf reinstecken, ein Bom dia! lässt mürrische Gesichter nicht aufkommen. Algárvios können doch so herzlich sein! Von den Menschen an der Küste wird man das eher mit Bedacht sagen. Dort werden viele vom Tourismus und seiner Anonymität regelrecht überrollt – aber im Hinterland, da haben die Leute ein anderes, ein heiter gelassenes Gemüt. Und obwohl Loulé eine Cidade, eine Großstadt ist, gilt das in hohem Maße auch hier. Rund um Loulé breitet sich die Region Barrocal aus; sie ist teils terrassiert, hat fruchtbaren Boden, viel Grundwasser. Nordafrikanische Mauren, die die Region ab dem 8. Jahrhundert erschlossen, holten das kostbare Nass mit Schöpfbrunnen in geradezu genialer Weise zu Tage. Die Terrassen wurden in leichter Schräglage so angelegt, dass man das Wasser aus einer Rinne vor der hinteren Terrassenwand zu jedem Ackerstück, jedem Baum lenken konnte. War diese Terrasse „geschwemmt“, kam die nächste an die Reihe. Mandeln, Feigen und viele andere Früchte gedeihen hier. Früher wurden sie getrocknet und als haltbare Nahrung für die Seefahrt verwendet. Mit Eselkarren brachte man sie zu den nahen Hafenorten oder verkaufte sie in Loulé. Das begehrte Recht, eine Messe abhalten zu dürfen, erhielt Loulé schon im Jahr 1291. Reste von Atlantis: Nördlich von Loulé wird das Land im Sommer heiß, richtig heiß. Karg die Vegetation. Zistrosen, Erdbeerbäume, Ölbäume, Johannisbrotbäume gedeihen auf dem Schotter bedeckten lehmigen Grund. Einige braunrote Felsbrocken liegen weit verstreut herum. Im Dörfchen Assumada da Cruz sind sie größer als anderswo und angeblich auch älter, nämlich 600 Millio-

Algárvios can really be so warm and friendly! Regarding the people on the coast, you might have to be a little more cautious. Many of these people have been downright overwhelmed by tourism and its anonymity - but in the back country, the people are of a quite different, cheerful and serene disposition. And, even though Loulé is a Cidade, a big city, that is also largely true there. All around Loulé lies the barrocal region: it is partly terraced, has fertile soil and a lot of groundwater. North African Moors, who annexed the region from the 8th century, introduced an ingenious system of water wells to bring the precious liquid out into the open. The terraces were laid out in a slightly inclined position so that you could draw the water from a gutter in front of the rear terrace wall to each plot of land and to every tree. As soon as the one terrace was “soaked”, the water went on to the next one. Almonds, figs and many other fruits flourish here. They used to be dried and used as long-life food for sailors. They would be transported to the nearby ports via donkey carts or sold in Loulé. Back in 1291, Loulé gained the coveted right to be allowed to hold a fair. Remains of Atlantis: to the north of Loulé in the summer, the land gets really, really hot. The vegetation, sparse. Rockrose, arbutus, olive trees, carob trees all flourish on the gravel-covered loamy ground. There are a few redbrown boulders scattered around. In the village Assumada da Cruz they are larger than elsewhere and allegedly also older, namely 600 million years - twice as old as the usual rock in the Algarve. One German scientist claims to be able to identify the remains of Atlantis in this rock. If

Mit einiger Phantasie sieht man drollige Gestalten, vom Dinosaurier bis zum Krokodil. Für ein Picknick ist diese Stelle allemal gut. Generell ist das Hinterland dünn besiedelt. Die Menschen, die noch im bäuerlichen Umfeld leben, werden immer weniger, weil bloß die Alten bleiben. Die Jugend zieht es an die Küste. Dort, und nur dort, lockt das liebe Geld. Und so stirbt das Kleinbauerntum allmählich aus. Wind und Wetter nagen an den alten Häusern. Hier im Kreis Loulé sind die meisten alten Gebäude aus Lehm erbaut. Fällt erst mal das Dach ein, wird schnell eine Ruine daraus. Die Mauern sinken zurück ins Erdreich, sie verwesen geradezu. Als Spuren einer Kulturlandschaft wird man sie binnen weniger Jahrzehnte nicht mehr erkennen. Die Urvegetation zieht dort wieder ein, wo Angebautes gedieh. Dieser Sieg der Natur hat etwas Friedfertiges, unergründlich Beruhigendes an sich und vermittelt dem Hinterland eine eigene Stimmung. Für die Bewohner der dicht besiedelten Küste stellt sie ein Reservoir an Kraft und Ruhe dar. Augenscheinlich wird das am Beispiel Alte. Weiß gekalkt das Dörfchen, Blumentöpfe hängen an den schiefen alten Wänden, malerische Gassen führen durch das Hausgemenge. Am Quelltopf Fonte Grande kann man im kühlen Wasser plantschen. Angeblich soll es ein Jungbrunnen sein – ausgerechnet in Alte. Ein anderes Schatzkämmerle ist das Dörfchen Querença samt Umgebung. Ein manuelinisches Portal ziert die Hauptkirche aus dem 16. Jahr-

you let your imagination run free, you can see weird and wonderful figures, from dinosaurs to crocodiles. This place is always perfect for a picnic. Generally speaking, the back country is only thinly populated. There are fewer and fewer people who still live in this rural environment because only the elderly remain. The young people are drawn to the coast. There, and only there, do they find the attraction of beautiful money. And so the small holders gradually die out. Wind and weather slowly eat away at the old houses. Here in the district of Loulé most of the old buildings are built of clay. Should the roof collapse at any time, the house soon turns into a ruin. The walls sink back into the ground, they virtually decay to nothing. Within a few decades, you would no longer recognise any traces of a cultural landscape. The original vegetation returns to where crops were once thriving. This victory for nature has something peaceable about it, something unfathomably reassuring in itself and it gives the hinterland its own atmosphere. For residents of the densely populated coast, it represents a reservoir of strength and peace. One example of where this can clearly be seen is in Alte. The village is white with lime, flower pots hang onto the crooked old walls, picturesque alleys wind their way through the jumble of houses. At the spring of Fonte Grande, you can splash around in the cool water. It is supposed to be a fountain of youth - of all things in this old town of Alte. Another treasure in the area is the village of Querença and its surroundings. A Manueline portal decorates the main church from the 16th century. Flat

Otter tummeln sich in einem Flüsschen, Fledermauskolonien nisten in tiefen Höhlen. Sehr lohnenswert ist auch das Wandern auf dem nahen, knapp 500 Meter hohen Tafelberg Rocha da Pena. Eine gigantische Mauer lässt immer wieder Spekulationen über Sinn, Zweck und Alter dieses Bauwerks aufkommen. Ein Rundwanderweg beginnt im Dörfchen Penina neben der „Bar das Grutas“. Die Eheleute Amarilha und Manuel geben Karten aus. Auch eine deutsche Version über dieses herrliche Naturschutzgebiet ist vorhanden. In weiten Teilen des Hinterlandes im Concelho Loulé ist Kork die wichtigste Einnahmequelle. Die bis zwei Meter langen und bis fünf Zentimeter dicken Korkstücke sieht man häufig in riesigen Stapeln für den Abtransport aufgeschichtet. Die Rinde der weit ausladenden Korkeiche wird alle neun Jahre in den heißesten Wochen geschält, anschließend der nackte Baumstamm mit der Jahreszahl der Schälung bemalt. So ist stets ersichtlich, wann die nächste fällig ist, da die Rinde von innen nach außen wächst. Eine 4 bedeutet also: 2004 wurde geschält, im Jahr 2013 ist der Baum wieder fällig. Über 400 Jahre lang kann diese Rinde abschält werden! Auf einen Kubikzentimeter des Wundermaterials kommen über zehn Millionen Zellen, und diese machen es so einzigartig elastisch, wasserdicht, isolierend und reißfest. Nirgendwo in der ganzen

There are otters cavorting in a river, bat colonies nesting in deep caves. It’s very much worth your while to go hiking on the nearby Table Mountain, Rocha da Pena, almost 500 metres high. A gigantic wall gives rise to all manner of speculation about the meaning, purpose and age of this building. A circular path starts in the village of Penina next to the “Bar das Grutas”. The husband and wife team, Amarilha and Manuel, give out maps. A German version about this magnificent nature reserve is also available. For many parts of the hinterland in the Concelho Loulé, cork is the most important source of income. The pieces of cork, two metres long and up to five centimetres thick, are often seen piled up for removal in huge stacks. The bark of the widely spread cork oak is peeled off every nine years during the hottest weeks, then the year it was peeled is painted onto the bare tree trunk. Then it is always possible to see when it is due for the next peeling, as the bark grows from the inside to the outside. A “4” means: it was peeled in 2004, so in 2013 the tree is ready to be peeled again. This bark can be peeled off for over 400 years! There are over ten million cells in one cubic centimetre of this wonder material and that is what makes it so uniquely elastic, waterproof, insulating and resistant to tearing. Nowhere in the world does cork thrive as well as in the Algarve.

Welt gedeihen Korkeichen so gut wie in der Algarve. Im Kreis Loulé gibt es neben den alten Korkeichenwäldern auch riesige Eukalyptusplantagen. Oft fährt man viele Kilometer, bis das nächste Dorf erreicht ist. Als Anfang August 2004 ein Riesenfeuer in der Serra de Caldeirão rund um Barranco do Velho tobte, erhielt die gesamte wunderschöne Gegend von einem Tag zum anderen ein aschgraues Trauergewand. Von solchem Leid spürt man nichts an der „internationalen“ Uferregion. Loulés Küstenstreifen ist nicht viele Kilometer lang. Aber er hat es an sich und in sich. Und das kam so: Mit Argwohn sahen die für den Tourismus der Algarve Verantwortlichen, wie sich in den 70er Jahren der Fremdenverkehr planlos ausbreitete. Portugal schien Gefahr zu laufen, dem Billigtourismus zu verfallen. Deshalb wurde beschlossen den Ort Vilamoura als Gegenmodell ins Leben zu rufen. „Qualitäts-Tourismus“ hieß die Devise. Rund um einen Yachthafen (Marina) baute man Komforthotels, legte in der Umgebung ein Netz aus Golfplätzen an. Binnen weniger Jahre wurde die Marina ein feudaler Ankerplatz für 800 Segelboote. Restaurants, Boutiquen und viele Geschäfte boomten mit.

Freshwater Salt Water

In the Loulé district, along with the old cork forests, there are also vast eucalyptus plantations. Often you can drive many miles before reaching the next village. When, in the beginning of August 2004, a huge fire was raging in the Serra de Caldeirão around Barranco do Velho, this beautiful area was completed covered by an ashen-grey mourning robe from one day to the next. In the “international” coastal region you feel nothing of this sorrow. Loulé’s coastal area is not many kilometres long. But it really has something special about it. And this is why: those responsible for tourism in the Algarve watched with suspicion how haphazardly tourism was spreading in the 70’s. Portugal seemed to be running the risk of succumbing to cheap tourism. Consequently, it was decided to call Vilamoura into existence as an alternative model. It was known as “quality tourism”. Around a marina, they built first class hotels and put alongside them a network of golf courses. Within a few years, the marina had become a feudal anchorage for 800 sailing boats. Restaurants, boutiques and many shops also benefited from this boom. The nearby town of Almancil turned into a highly sought-after location for lawyers,

doctors, restaurants. You can also find one of the most important art galleries here, located next to the Chapel of São Lourenço. Azulejos and gilded carvings make this house of God a showpiece of Portuguese art. Today Vilamoura and the surrounding area represent a prime example of far-sighted planning in all aspects of tourism. In the 70s, Quinta do Lago was still untouched terrain, when multimillionaire André Jordan visited the area. On the spur of the moment, he acquired hundreds of acres of land, which he then resold soon after, divided into plots like pearls strung together. The centrepiece was a Golf Grand Hotel under the management of the legendary Orient Express company. This was a no-risk piece of business because Quinta do Lago is like a giant jigsaw puzzle in which every detail is right: the magnificent dunes along the beach and next to it the edge of the lagoon of Ria, an idyllic lake embedded in undulating countryside, “Lago”, surrounded by never-ending forests of pine trees. Pastel colours at any time of day, balmy winds, the salty smell of the sea. Between the pines there are villas where the money aristocracy from around the world live; they have taken over from nature a privileged piece of cliff edge which is otherwise only visible from the air, when landing at Faro. A few kilometres away, there is another golf Eldorado: Vale do Lobo. Villa complexes surrounded by greens. The constant clicking sound of the ball being struck is just as dear to these golf fans as the song of the nightingales, several of which can be found here. Vale do Lobo has blossomed in recent years into a tasteful sports centre which also serves as a training location for some German Bundesliga teams.

Hier befand sich auch eine der bedeutendsten Kunstgalerien, neben der Kapelle von São Lourenço gelegen. Azulejos und vergoldete Schnitzereien machen dieses Gotteshaus zu einem Glanzstück portugiesischer Kunst. Heute gelten Vilamoura und Umgebung als Paradebeispiel für weitsichtige Planung in allen Belangen des Tourismus. In den 70erJahren war die Quinta do Lago noch unberührtes Gelände, als Multimillionär André Jordan die Gegend besuchte. Spontan erwarb er Hunderte von Hektar Land, die er bald weiterverkaufte, aufgeteilt in wie Perlen aneinander gereihte Parzellen. Kernstück war ein GolfGrandhotel unter Leitung der legendären OrientExpressgesellschaft. Kein riskantes Unternehmen, denn Quinta do Lago ist ein gigantisches Puzzle, in welchem jedes Detail stimmt: Der herrliche Dünenstrand und gleich daneben die Lagunenausläufer der Ria, ein idyllisch in wellendes Land gebetteter See, „Lago“, umrahmt von nicht enden wollenden Wäldern aus Schirmpinien: Pastelltöne zu jeder Tageszeit, laue Winde, salzige Gerüche des Meeres. Zwischen den Pinien ragen Villen auf, bewohnt vom Geldadel aus aller Welt, der sich von der Natur ein Stück privilegierten Klippensaums erobert hat, der sonst nur aus der Luft, beim Landeanflug auf Faro, hervorragend zu sehen ist. Wenige Kilometer entfernt breitet sich ein weiteres GolfEldorado aus: Vale do Lobo. Villenkomplexe umrahmt von Greens. Das ständig klackende Geräusch des Ballschlagens ist den Golffreunden so lieb wie das Trällern der Nachtigallen, von welchen es hier etliche gibt. Vale do Lobo hat sich in über die Jahre zu einem gediegenen Sportzentrum gemausert, das auch deutschen Bundesliga -Teams als Trainingsort dient.

MUSEUM

Museu Municipal de Aljezur Das städtische Museum von Aljezur befindet sich in einem alten Gebäude aus dem 19. Jahrhundert über der städtischen Kunstgalerie, die das ganze Jahr über eine Vielzahl von Exponaten sowie das archäologische und das ethnografische Zentrum beherbergt. Ersteres zeigt vor allem Objekte aus der Bronzezeit und der Jahre der moslemischem Besetzung. Besonders wertvoll ist eine Sammlung antiker Werkzeuge. Das zweite Zentrum verfügt über eine interessante Auswahl landwirtschaftlicher Utensilien, wie sie in der Vergangenheit benutzt wurden, sowie eine genaue Reproduktion antiker Wohnhäuser. Direkt vor dem Museum steht der Pranger, der mit Elementen aus dem 16. Jahrhundert wiederaufgebaut wurde.

The municipal museum of Aljezur is located in an old building dating from the 19th century above the city‘s art gallery; it houses a variety of exhibits all year round and has an archaeological and ethnographic centre. The former exhibits mainly objects from the Bronze Age and from the period of Muslim occupation. The collection of antique tools is especially valuable. The other centre has an interesting collection of agricultural utensils, as they were used in the past, and an accurate reproduction of ancient houses. Right in front of the museum is the old pillory, which was rebuilt with elements from the 16th century.

Museu Municipal de Arqueologia de Silves Im Archäologischen Museum in der Burg von Silves sind Tausende Fundstücke zu sehen, die bei Ausgrabungen in der Festung, der Stadt und der Umgebung entdeckt wurden. Sie erzählen die Geschichte von Silves aus der Altsteinzeit bis zum 17. Jahrhundert. Vor allem die muslimische Herrschaft, die vom 8. bis zum 13. Jahrhundert reichte, ist umfassend dokumentiert. Zentralstück und Perle des Museums ist der Almohaden-Brunnen aus dem 12. oder 13. Jahrhundert, um den das Gebäude herum gebaut wurde. Bei der weiß-blauen portugiesischen Keramik aus dem 15. oder 16. In the Archaeological Museum in the Castle of Silves you can see thousands of artefacts which were discovered during excavations in the fortress, the city and the surrounding area. They tell the story of Silves from the Stone Age to the 17th century. In particular, the period of Muslim rule, which lasted from 8th to 13th century, is amply documented. Centre piece and pride of the museum is the Almohad fountain from the 12th or 13th century which the building was constructed around. Amongst the blue and white Portuguese ceramics from the 15th or 16th century is the Fainça Portuguesa - the result of failed attempts by the Portuguese to copy Chinese porcelain after their first journeys to China.

Robin Hood and the babes in the wood Die Laien-Theatergruppe “The Algarveans” wurde im September 1991 durch einen Aufruf in einer Lokalzeitung gegründet, auf den sich rund 20 Interessenten meldeten. Die Theatergruppe formierte sich, und schon im Januar des darauffolgenden Jahres wurde das erste Pantomimenspiel „Der gestiefelte Kater“ aufgeführt. Der Rest ist, wie man so schön sagt, Geschichte. Heute, 23 Jahre später, präsentiert die Gruppe ihre 20. Pantomimeaufführung “Robin Hood and the babes in the wood” im Auditorium von Lagoa. Trevor Herrington, bekannt durch seine Aufführung von “Robinson Crusoe” im Kulturzentrum Lagos im letzten Jahr, führt Regie und verspricht mit seiner zweiten Darbietung viele Lieder und Publikumsteilnahme im besten Sinne traditioneller Pantomime. Fliegender Pudding, schreckliche Witze, Musik und Gelächter sind garantiert - “The Algarveans” haben alle Register gezogen, um ihr 20-jähriges Pantomimen-Jubiläum zu einem unvergesslichen Erlebnis zu machen. The amateur theatre group “The Algarveans” was founded in September 1991, after a local newspaper asked for people who were interested and received 20 replies. A theatre group was formed and in January of the following year they performed their first pantomime, “Puss in Boots”. The rest, as they say, is history! And now, 23 years later, the group is presenting their 20th pantomime with performances of “Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood” in the Lagoa Auditorium. Trevor Herrington, who was very successful last year with his performance of “Robinson Crusoe” at the Lagos Cultural Centre, is the director and, with his second pantomime, is promising a whole lot of laughter, songs and audience participation, as one would expect from a traditional pantomime. And this is the story: All is not well in Lagoa! The wicked sheriff has got rich with the many taxes he is forcing the poor of the city to pay and he is about to get richer. This all sounds a bit like Troika! Pip and Penny, recently orphaned and heirs to a huge fortune, have been entrusted to the care of the greedy sheriff, and he has hatched a terrible plan to inherit the money and purchases the beautiful Maid Marion in order to marry her.

Voller Luxus zum halben Preis Die Algarve Spa-Wochen wurden von allen Spa-Liebhabern schon heiß erwartet. Nun finden sie vom 15. bis 23. März statt. Renommierte Einrichtungen bieten eine Ermäßigung von 50% auf alle Behandlungen - eine einmalige Gelegenheit, zu einem unwiderstehlichen Preis Geist und Körper zu beleben. Außerdem bieten die verschiedenen Teilnehmer der Initiative zum Thema „Ernährung“ Vorträge und Workshops während der Spa-Wochen an. Die Aktion wird der Öffentlichkeit in einer Veranstaltung am 14. März zwischen 10.30 Uhr und 13.30 Uhr in der Markthalle von Loulé durch die Ernährungsberaterin Teresa Weiß vorgestellt. Die Algarve Spa Week wurde im Oktober 2010 mit dem Ziel ins Leben gerufen, die Algarve als eine Region mit ausgezeichneten Bedingungen für Gesundheit- und Wellnesstourismus vorzustellen. Der Erfolg war so groß, dass diese Veranstaltung inzwischen zweimal jährlich stattfindet. In dieser 5. Ausgabe nehmen zwölf Spas der besten 5 -Sterne-Hotels der Region teil.

Luxury for half the price The Algarve Spa Week has been eagerly awaited by all spa lovers. It will finally take place from 15th to 23rd March. Well-known establishments will be offering a 50% discount on all treatments - a unique opportunity to invigorate mind and body at an irresistible price. In addition to this, the various members of the initiative will be providing lectures and workshops on the subject of “diet” during the spa weeks. The event will be introduced to the public by the nutritionist Teresa White at a meeting in the Loulé Market Hall on 14th March between 10.30 a.m. and 1.30 p.m. The Algarve Spa Week was launched in October 2010 with the aim of helping to introduce the Algarve as a region which provides excellent conditions for health and wellness tourism. – 09.06.2014 Das historische Archiv von Albufeira stellt Bilder des großen politischen Führers Àlvaro Cunhal aus, die er während seiner Inhaftierung in Lissabon von 1950 -1959 zeichnete. Die Werke haben keine Titel,der Betrachter versteht die Nachricht, indem er die Zeichnungen „liest“. Menschen sind in seinen Arbeiten ein wichtiges Thema, sowie Arbeit , Kampf, Leid, Elend, Freude, Festlichkeiten und Frauen. Álvaro Cunhal was imprisoned for eleven years, 8 of these in isolation, and that gave him the opportunioty to do a lot of drawing between 1951 and 1959 in a prison cell in Lisbon. The drawings do not have titles, they convey their message to anyone who looks at them without needing titles. Das Quartett verwendet eine Formel, die auf den Wurzeln des Jazz-Sounds aufbaut. Im Hinblick auf die Instrumentierung,mit einem sauberen Klang von Klavier und Gitarre kreieren sie eine imposante polyphone Mischung.

Mit dem Kauf eines iPads entdeckte die deutsche Künstlerin eine neue Welt der Malerei. Anstatt mit Pinsel, Palette und Staffeleie malt sie mit dem Finger oder einem Stift direkt auf dem Bildschirm und bearbeitet mit verschiedenen Programmen ihre kreativen digitalen Werke. Jutta Mertens was born in Germany and grew up in Switzerland. In 1978, she and her husband choose to live in Portugal. The artist, who always had a great fascination for art, decided to dedicate herself to creative activities. Painting, interior design and jewellery design as well as travelling were just some of the wonderful pastimes Jutta enjoyed. With the purchase of an iPad, Jutta discovered a new world of painting - a digital iPad Painting app. Instead of using brushes, palettes and easels, a world of painting with a finger or with a stylus on the screen opened up and several programmes offered unprecedented opportunities.

Der Film folgt ihrer Geschichte in der literarischen Krise, als sie nicht mehr in der Lage war, sich selbst über das Schreiben auszudrücken, gerade zum Zeitpunkt des Todes Apelles, ihres geliebten Bruders und Marineflieger-Offiziers, dessen Wasserflugzeug in den Fluss Tejo stürzte. Nach dem Kurzfilm „Entre o Desejo eo Destino „und seiner langen Version“ „Uinze Pontos na Alma“ kehrt der Schriftsteller Vicente Alves do Ó mit einem Film zurück, der einen der wichtigsten portugiesischen Dichter des 20. Jahrhunderts ehren soll.

Born December 8, 1894, Florbela Espanca was an unusual woman, ahead of her time . The film follows her story in the literary crisis period, when she was no longer able to express herself through writing, at the time of death of Apelles, her beloved brother and Naval Aviation officer, whose seaplane crashed in the Tagus river. After the short film Entre o Desejo e o Destino and long Uinze Pontos na Alma, the writer Vicente Alves do Ó returns with a film that aims to honour one of the most important Portuguese poets of the 20th century. In the village, the Minimoys have prepared a great feast in his honour and the young princess wears her rose petal dress. But Arthur‘s father chooses this eagerly awaited day to announce the end of his holiday at his grandma´s home. When preparing to return, a spider deposits a grain of rice in Arthur‘s hand with the acronym SOS. No doubt, Selenia is in danger!

Aber als das Verhalten der Prinzessin das Überleben des Reiches und all seinen Untertanen gefährdet, beschließt der König zu handeln und schickt Vanessa auf ein Abenteuer, das ihr Leben verändern wird. Dies ist eine Produktion von GORDA für Kinder, inszeniert und getextet von John Evaristo. Vanessa is a rude and badly behaved princess who torments the lives of the servants of the palace, and councilors of the King. The King, her father, does not know what to do! But when the attitude of the Princess jeopardizes the survival of the kingdom and all the people, the King decides to take action and sends Vanessa on an adventure that will change her life. – 14.03.2014 Antonio Cristo (Cristopintor) ist ein im Jahr 1946 geborener portugiesischer Künstler. Seine erste Ausstellung im Jahr 1972 fand im Kultur-Centrum Galerie von Stockholm statt. Er unternahm Studienreisen nach Italien, Frankreich, Spanien, Holland und Skandinavien und gewann den ersten Preis in der International Art Fair (Portimao) mit der Arbeit „A famosa parede em decomposição“ sowie den dritten Preis im nationalen Wettbewerb gefördert durch die „Galeria Diário de Notícias” mit der Arbeit „Time Remote II“. In seiner Arbeit sehen wir experimentellen / gegenständlichen Expressionismus. Antonio Cristo, (Cristopintor) is a Portuguese Artist born in 1946. He had his first exhibition in 1972 at the Kultur-Centrum gallery of Stockholm. He made study trips to Italy, France, Spain, Holland and Scandinavia. He won the first price in The International Art Fair (Portimao) with the work “A famosa parede em decomposição“ and the third prize in the national Contest sponsored by „Galeria Diário de Notícias” with his work „Remote time II“. – 31.03.2014 Beide sind erfolgreiche Künstler, die ihre Arbeiten auf der ganzen Welt ausstellen und verkaufen. Wir sind stolz, dass wir diese zwei großen Künstler in São Brás präsentieren können. Sie werden in der Stadtgalerie von São Brás de Alportel zusammen ausstellen. Auf den ersten Blick haben ihre Arbeit nicht viel gemein: die üppigen Farben und Formen der Glasskulpturen von Louis und die gedämpften, mystischen Werke von Raffale. Dennoch, durch den ersten Eindruck könnte man manchmal auf die falsche Fährte geführt werden, da beide Louis und Raffaele mit Jahrhunderte alten Techniken arbeiten, die bemerkenswerter Weise nie niedergeschrieben, sondern immer mündlich von Generation zu Generation übertragen wurden. Daher auch der Titel der Ausstellung: „2“, der auf verschiedene Weisen verstanden werden kann, aber wirklich erst zu verstehen ist, nachdem man diese einzigartige Ausstellung besucht hat. Both are successful artists who exhibited and sold their work all over the world. We are proud that we can present these 2 great artists in São Brás which is gradually becoming the centre of the art in the Algarve. They will be exhibiting together in the city gallery of São Brás de Alportel. At first glance, their work does not seem to have much in common: the exuberant colours and shapes of the glass sculptures by Louis and the more subdued mystical works of Raffale. Still, that first impression could put you sometimes on the wrong track, as both Louis and Raffaele using centuries-old techniques with the remarkable thing that these were never recorded but always transferred verbally from generation to generation. Hence the title of the exhibition: 2‚ which can be understood in several ways but can really only be understood after you have visited and viewed this unique exhibition. Galeria Municipal São Brás
