7Ways Your Family Can Celebrate The True Meaning of Christmas A WRITTEN BY: Lisa Appelo
couple of years ago, I went to a big box store with my children to find a nativity set for our front lawn. It seemed an easy enough task. While we found aisles full of everything from twinkling snowmen to LED candy canes and animated characters, the store had only a few small nativity sets and no kind of manger scene for our lawn.
The commercialization of Christmas makes it easy to get pulled away from the real reason for Christmas. Most holiday movies and holiday music are just that – about a holiday and not the holy day. Not only that, the sheer busyness of December can keep us from focusing on Jesus’ birth. I’ve found that if I want to celebrate and help my children learn about the real Christmas story, I have to be prepared and purposeful. If you’re trying to keep that focus as well,

here are seven ways your family can celebrate the true meaning of Christmas. 1. Create a Jesse Tree. A Jesse Tree is decorated with ornaments that symbolize God’s plan to bring his Savior to the world – from creation, through the Hebrew exodus, the reign of King David and all the way to Jesus’ birth. Pinterest is full of Jesse Tree ornament tutorials and books can be found that have scripture, prayers, and devotionals to accompany the ornaments.
the Nativity Story, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, The Christmas Candle, or The Little Drummer Boy. 6. Tour a Living Nativity. What a treat to be transported back in time with costumed actors, a stable, live animals and depiction of life in Bethlehem at Jesus’ birth. If a church in your town is not hosting a living nativity, gather some friends together with simple costumes and props for your own neighborhood version one evening. 7. Read the real Christmas story. 2. Write a letter to Jesus.
5. Plan a movie night. My kids wake up with a month’s worth of bottled anticipation ready to dive into the Christmas presents. Several years ago, we decided to start with the real reason for Christmas. So before the chaos of wrapping paper and bows, we first read about the birth of Jesus in Luke 2:1-20.
This is a tradition started by a friend’s family. Kids are used to writing a letter to Santa and asking for the things they want. What if, instead, they wrote a letter to Jesus listing what they want to give? Is there something they need to give up? Something they can give away? It’s a great way to turn the focus from self to God and others.
Some families enjoy reading this passage just before bedtime on Christmas Eve or when everyone is gathered around the Christmas dinner table.
3. Set up a child-friendly nativity.
In the bustle of December, a movie night at home with popcorn and hot chocolate is a family favorite. Try one of these movies to celebrate the reason for the season: A Charlie Brown Christmas,
Despite the bustle of the season and the push to make December about gifts, this is one month of the year when families can incorporate traditions to celebrate the real Christmas story. k
Because several of my nativity sets are special and breakable, I like to let my kids set up one manger scene for little hands at their play level. My children will often rearrange the pieces and reenact the story through the season. 4. Host an old-fashioned carol sing. One of my favorite Christmas memories is a party my family attended each year. After hors d’oeuvres and conversation, families gathered around the piano to sing all the old Christmas songs. The lighthearted songs were included (I remember singing jingle bells while everyone shook their keyrings) along with the traditional carols.

7 Questions to Ask Your Child at the End of the Year Written by: Samantha Bailie
Even though 2020 has been hard take time to reminisce about the fond memories your family has made in the past 12 months.
B

eing on lockdown was difficult for all of us for different reasons. For me, it was hard because I was pregnant for all of it. And I was chasing around an 18-month old! It was easily the most exhausting time of my life. We didn’t get to celebrate our pregnancy the way we would have liked. My husband couldn’t accompany me to my appointments, and he missed out on several ultrasounds. Even our hospital experience was strange. But despite all the weirdness, God gave us a baby! The sweetest, healthiest little boy we could have asked for.
best to find all the good that happened in 2020, but also take a few moments to process the not-so-good things, too. Here are 7 end-of-year questions for kids.
I know my family isn’t the only one who experienced hardship this year. To put it plainly, 2020 was just hard. With all the craziness happening in the world, it’s tempting to dismiss it and move on. But we should take time to sit with our kids and discuss this past year. Try your
2. Who did you become better friends with this year?
kiddos | December 2020 • January 2021
1. Which place was fun to visit this year? Out of all the places your family went this year—a vacation, a trip to visit family, or a quick stop to grab ice cream—which trip does your child have fond memories of? Are there any places he or she wants to visit again in the future?
Talk with your children about their friends. Is there an old friend they’ve grown closer to? Or maybe they’ve enjoyed a new friendship this past year.
3. What’s the hardest thing you did this year? Some end-of-year questions for kids are hard to answer. This might be one. Have your child tell you about the most difficult thing he or she did this year. You can even take this opportunity to talk about how the “hard stuff” leads to “good stuff” like overcoming fears and taking on responsibility. 4. What’s the first memory about this year that pops into your head? This is a fun one! Find out which memory your child remembers the most from this past year. Even though 2020 has been hard, take time to reminisce about the fond memories your family has made in the past 12 months.

fun
Find the seven differences between the two pictures 5. What’s an adventure you would like to go on next year? This is a great way to learn what truly excites your children. You can ask them to tell you about a wild adventure—even if it’s something you can’t realistically do next year. Then ask them to choose something they can realistically do, and maybe even help them think up a smaller version of the big adventure they have been dreaming of! 6. What’s something new you want to learn next year? Is there a sport your child might be interested in trying out? Maybe he or she enjoys being in the kitchen and wants to learn how to bake a favorite dessert. Find out what current aspirations your child has! Use iMOM’s Goals Chart to get it on paper.
7. What things do you want to pray about for the upcoming year? Sit down with your child and make a prayer list for the upcoming year. You can add to the list throughout the year or even help your child keep a journal. This is a great way to start a habit of prayer. Add a couple of your own end-of-year questions for kids. What would you ask? k

parenting tips
The Secret Power of Chores WRITTEN BY: Dr. Stephanie O’Leary
5. Keep Some Things Off Limits: At least at first. There is a hidden beauty to telling your child he or she is not yet ready for certain household responsibilities. Honestly, toddlers should not be doing laundry and young kids should not be washing sharp knives. That said, when tasks are categorized or presented as being at different levels, it gives your child something to work towards. k
K
ids doing chores is a serious win-win situation. Practically speaking, when your child does a household task, it takes one thing off of your parenting plate, which is fantastic. But the benefit of doing simple chores goes deeper for kids. Helping out around the house allows your child to experience feelings of mastery, build self-reliance, and learn responsibility. That said, when life gets busy it may be hard to keep chores at the top of the to-do list. This is especially true if you get push-back from your child when you ask for help. Before you jump in and take care of everything yourself, consider these five tips and see if you can unlock some chore power in your home. 1. Make Chores Family Focused: Part of the power of chores is teaching your child the importance of helping others. If chores include tasks that only benefit your child, such as making their bed or cleaning their room, this lesson is lost. So, make sure your child does at least one thing that helps the entire family.
2. Let Your Child Choose: If your child is not yet in the habit of doing chores, let him or her decide on a task to take ownership of. You can make a few suggestions, but giving your child the option to select a chore will make follow-through easier. 3. Give Cool Job Titles: Kids, like adults, love a special job title. This helps set the tone for leadership and will allow your child to embrace the responsibility of their chore. Think Mail Master, Dusting Director, and VP of Dishwashing. Older kids may roll their eyes, but at the end of the day getting creative with titles will make a difference. 4. Don’t Give Allowance: At least not for doing chores. Research has shown that kids are actually less motivated to do chores when they’re being paid for them. So, don’t make chores a business transaction and you’ll give your child a great opportunity to learn the value of teamwork within your family.

lot has changed for families this year, but one source of magic parents can continue to count on to fill their kids with joy is the Scholastic Book Fair. Remember the anticipation you felt as a kid on a crisp fall morning? The excitement you and your classmates couldn’t contain on the short walk to the school library? The thrill of looking around a room full of displays featuring the latest Goosebumps, cool pens, bookmarks, and funky erasers you couldn’t wait to buy? The unbridled joy of reading a new book—that you chose yourself!—for the first time? Brand new drive-through, virtual, and revamped in-person Scholastic Book Fairs options are being held each day in communities across the country, helping parents ensure that their kids still get to experience the best day of

the school year, whether they are learning remotely or in person. Families can safely visit a Scholastic Book Fair—either at school or from the comfort of their home—and shop a wide and diverse selection of great books for every age group and reading level, while also supporting their school community in the process. “We know how much educators depend on our book fairs to raise critical resources for their schools and address the learning losses that children are facing given the unprecedented, months long school closures. But—equally important—our book fairs offer kids a sense of continuity, normalcy, and joy during a year that’s been
so difficult,” explains Sasha Quinton, President of Scholastic Book Fairs. “We quickly pivoted to develop and roll out new, flexible fair models to meet each school’s needs and make sure they could bring the magic of a Scholastic Book Fair to their communities, no matter what their return to learning looks like.”
Whether schools are learning in-person, remotely, or using a hybrid format this year, Scholastic is proud to offer them safe and easy solutions for their Scholastic Book Fair fun:
• Revamped in-person fairs meet strict
safety guidelines from the warehouse to the school, and with new solutions for space, time, and crowd-size limitations. Quick, easy, and flexible setups include safety kits, social distancing floor stickers, and signs that will make the familiar Scholastic Book Fair experience a safe and enjoyable school event.
• Drive-through fairs, available in select markets, are a safe and easy way to bring books directly to families and
communities, whether the school building is open or closed. This Scholastic Book Fair features a branded truck that will deliver a case of our top-selling titles, an array of book packs, and a visit from a favorite costumed character to help pass out the books. Schools will be provided with outdoor displays and signage to set up drive-through lanes in their parking
lot, so families can simply drive up, grab their books, and pay cashless with eWallet or a credit card, all from the comfort of their own vehicles.

• Virtual fairs offer flexibility for both
schools and families. Featuring fun characters, favorite series, and interactive author and video content, families and book lovers of all ages can “walk” through the Virtual Fair on any browser or device and shop more than 200 top-selling books. Users can also click through to the Scholastic Store Online to shop from Scholastic’s full portfolio of more than 6,000 books. Books ship directly to their homes, and schools earn 25% in Scholastic Dollars on all purchases. k
