One of the biggest movies of the moment hit screens across the globe this weekand a little bit of Killarney features in a main scene which has been seen my millions!

Warner Bros 'Magic Mike's Last Dance', starring Hollywood's Channing Tatum and Salma Hayek, was released on Friday last - but if you look closely you'll see a character wearing a T-shirt from Killarney alt-rock duo Greywind.

How the bother/sister duo from Ballydribbeen managed to get their merch on one of Hollywood's biggest movies is a whole other story according to guitarist and songwriter Paul O'Sullivan. Actor Ethan Lawrence, who many will know as Joe in 'Bad Education' or James in the Netflix series 'After Life' starring Ricky Gervais, auditioned for 'Magic Mike's Last Dance' wearing his own Greywind T-shirt.

And the casting people loved it so much that they asked if it could be used in the actual movie, Paul who is in the band with his sister Steph, told the Killarney Advertiser.

Greywind were also the headline act in London yesterday evening (Thursday) in the O2 Academy in Islington but he said they managed to squeeze in a bit of downtime to see the movie.

"It's so cool seeing it in cinemas," Paul said. "You can see the T-shirt in a couple of shots in a two to three minute scene

with Channing Tatum. We have been working on songs, recording in the studio this week and took time out to see it. Ethan Lawrence, he's a fan of ours and tweeted us loads of times. Last year he tweeted us and said he wore the T-shirt to his audition. Warner Bros then sent us a contract to use it in the film."

Ethan Lawrence even visited their show in London last night (Thursday) and they were all hoping to meet up.

New Road safety works to begin this summer

Works to enhance safety measures on a busy street that is home to four Killarney schools will commence during the summer holidays.

The area - which includes St Brendan’s College, Killarney Community College, The Mon and the Mercy - is a well-known traffic pinch point in the town, especially at school drop off and collection times. A long term €100,000 plan to alleviate some of the congestion in the area is in the pipeline. This includes the widening of the Rock Road junction by extending into the Garda station’s garden. This part of the plan is subject to Office of Public

Works approval.

However, the first phase of works will start this summer.

New Road is one of 47 road projects and schemes in Kerry that will benefit from the €30,950,225 investment announced this week by the Department of Transport.

The money will be spent on a new pedestrian crossing at the Bishop’s Path exit of St Brendan’s College and the widening of the exiting crossing near the Garda station.

Cllr Brendan Cronin has been pushing for safety upgrades on New Road for years.

During his time as mayor two years ago, he chaired several meetings with stakeholders, including school principals,

The band who are busy recording their second album have had their best year online.

They have amassed a following of almost 100k on TikTok. A 10-second clip of their song 'Carspin' got 500k views and 'Afterthoughts' 800k. 'Autumn' got 1.8m views on TikTok and 5.8m on Instagram. "We went from 3k followers to over 100k followers in three days," Paul added. "Our

songs have got over 13 million views recently."

The band's debut album ‘Afterthoughts’ was recorded in Texas with Grammy-Winning producer Jason Perry and charted in the Official UK Rock Chart. They have been praised by the likes of BBC Radio 1, Zane Lowe and MTV and in 2021 released their acclaimed newest single ‘Am I Asleep?’ with the track being described as “a stadium-ready alt-rock anthem” by Record Of The Day. "We're pretty excited for the rest of the year. The next aim is to get a song in a major movie."

“I got confirmation from the town engineer that the new crossing will be built during the school holiday,” Cllr Cronin told the Killarney Advertiser.

“This new funding will cover the cost of these works. The existing crossing is to be made wider because it is too narrow for the volume of kids using it. This will bring it up to modern safety standards.”

Huge response to earthquake appeal

Nearly a full truck load of essential aid was donated by the people of Killarney following last week’s devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria which killed 41,000 people.

The collection was organised by Killarney resident, and well-known Turkish barber Michael Kaya.

The 7.8 magnitude earthquake ripped through the two countries leaving thousands of people without shelter or food, and with just the clothes on their backs. It was the biggest earthquake Turkey has experienced in over 200 years and 10 cities and millions of people were affected. Upon hearing the news of the devastation to hit his home country Michael, who is from Kuşadası and who been living in Killarney for 19 years, put a call out for donations.

It’s red carpet time…for St Francis Special School!

He has been overwhelmed by the response from friends, family and customers of his High St barber shop. They donated clothes, food, nappies and other essentials. Some of the donations came from as far away as West Cork. He took in nearly a full truck load of essentials.

“People are very good,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “We delivered to Dublin, to an old army hospital and all the donations will be distributed from there. I'd like to thank everyone in Killarney for their generosity, for helping the people from my home country in their time of need."

€400k funding announced for Finnegan’s Cross upgrade

Finnegan’s Cross received €400,000 in funding this week under the 2023 investment programme for regional and local roads.

Finnegan’s Cross, near Kilcummin, has been the scene of several serious collisions in recent years including at least one fatal accident.

This year’s allocation is double the amount set aside under the same scheme last year but that money was unused as Kerry County Council remained in discussion with local landowners.

Local councillor Marie Moloney has been campaigning for years for safety upgrades to the junction.

Last month she brought a deputation of local residents to a meeting of the Killar-

ney Municipal District.

The residents were told that if the junction was given funding this year the Council would press ahead with a public consultation and gave an undertaking that the works will start by this September.

“I am calling on Kerry County Council to honour assurances given at that meeting that the works will start in September,”

Cllr Moloney told the Killarney Advertiser.

Finnegan’s Cross is one of 47 road projects and schemes in Kerry that will benefit from the €30,950,225 investment which will supplement local authorities’ own resources expenditure.

The funding was announced on Tuesday morning.

Up to one thousand people are expected to turn up to what is being anticipated as one of the biggest nights of the year at the INEC next month.

'A Night at the OsKarS' will see teachers, SNAs, the school secretary, house staff, bus escorts, parents, family and members of the children’s therapy team from St Francis Special School, Beaufort, appearing in seven different movies. These ‘movie stars’ will then compete for the highly coveted 'OsKaR' categories: Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor.

The school teamed up with Kevin Rowe Events and a celebrity judging panel includes popular entertainers and TV personalities and your vote will be included on the night. So dress up in your favourite evening gown or tuxedo for a

great night out.

"We will all compete on the night for a highly coveted 'OsKaR'," School Principal, Keith Ó Brolacháin, said.

"Our judging panel includes popular entertainers and TV personalities and those attending on the night will also get a chance to vote."

All money raised is going to refurbishing the school's therapy rooms including Speech and Language, Occupational Therapy and Sensory Rooms.

"Get your ticket from any of our school staff, our school reception or via the email below. Tickets cost €25 each, the red carpet entrance from 7pm, show starts at 8pm.

There'll also be an after party with DJ Donal directly after the show. Contact Claire at 064 6644452 for ticket enquiries and sponsorship package details.

Faha Cross and Listry Bridge included in road funding

Two dangerous stretches of the road that links Fossa to Killarney are to benefit from separate funding announced by the Department of Transport.

They are two of 47 road projects and schemes in Kerry that will benefit from the €30,950,225 investment confirmed this week.

Faha Cross on the R563 will get €65,000

under the Safety Improvement Works on the Regional and Local Roads element of the scheme.

“This is for the junction near the football field,” local councillor Brendan Cronin told the Killarney Advertiser.

“It is very dangerous as you exit from this junction as you have to be way out on the road to see what is coming.”

Meanwhile, Listry Bridge, on the same stretch of road, will get €75,000 under the Specific Improvement Grants portion of the funding.

Snooker legends exhibition pockets €8,500 for charity

A post-Christmas snooker exhibition featuring two legends of the game has pocketed over €8,500 for a local cancer support charity.

Representatives from Recovery Haven Kerry Cancer Support House returned to Killarney’s Eviston House Hotel in Killarney this week to receive the extraordinary proceeds from event organiser, Connie O’Sullivan and sponsor Pat Eviston.

The sell-out event, featuring snooker legends Ken Doherty and Jimmy White, took place at the Killarney hotel back in early January in memory Patrick’s late wife Linda, who received valuable support form Recovery Haven Kerry prior to her death.

The event also marked the 25th anniversary of Ken Doherty’s World Championship win, with the Dubliner showcasing his coveted trophy on the night.

As well as the match itself – which provided huge entertainment for the snooker-mad audience – the night also

Birthday celebrations for former Bond girl

There was no better place for Golden Globe and Emmy Award winning actress Jane Seymour to celebrate her birthday - as she partied in Killarney on Friday.

The 71-year-old actress - best known for her 1990s American TV series 'Dr Quinn Medicine Woman' - stayed in the Randles Hotel and celebrated in Hillianrds ahead of her birthday which took place on Wednesday.

"Kerry International Film Festival (KIFF) and Randles Hotel Killarney were delighted to host English actress, OBE, Jane Seymour, as she was celebrating her birthday weekend in Killarney on Friday night," KIFF Board Member, Aileen Garvey, said.

The actress is best known as a Bond girl in the 1973 James Bond film ‘Live and Let Die’.

Seymour has starred in an array of films throughout her extensive career, including 'Somewhere In Time', 'Wedding Crashers', 'Love', 'Wedding', 'Marriage', 'Little Italy', 'The War with Grandpa' and 'Friendsgiving' amongst many others.

In addition to her acting career, Seymour is also the founder of the Open Hearts Foundation and she has co-written several children’s books and self help books. She has also created the Jane Seymour Designs label which includes sculptures, jewellery, furniture and fashion.

Jane also met well known local teacher and musican Noel O'Sullivan and even posted a video onto her Instagram which has 281K followers!

"Happy #OpenHeartsSunday! Some of life’s most special moments happen when you least expect them. We met Mr. O’Sullivan here at Hilliard’s in Killarney beautifully playing the piano. Get this, he does it all by ear as he can’t read music!!

"Loved singing ‘Imagine’ together and getting to know him. Today I encourage you to say YES to new experiences outside of your routines, you never know what wonderful moments are just around the corner!"

featured a hugely exciting auction, with over €4,000 alone being raised for items including a signed David Clifford match jersey; a cue signed by each player, as well as a cue signed by the late, great, Alex Higgins.

Speaking after the presentation, Marisa Reidy of Recovery Haven said they were absolutely blown away by the amount of money raised on the night.

“There are so many people to thank, but none more so than organiser and chief Connie O'Sullivan and MC David Joyce who did so much work in the background, as well as Pat Eviston for choosing Recovery Haven as the beneficiary and being such a generous sponsor,” she said.

“A huge debt of gratitude too to our very own Kerry All Star David Clifford who donated one of his match jerseys to the auction and of course the extraordinary generosity of the people in the room - it truly blew us away and we are indebted to everyone for making the night such a resounding success.”

Housing hopes for Polly site

Kerry County Council could build social housing on part of the Pretty Polly site.

The abandoned factory on Park Road has been identified as a site for Kerry Educational and Training Board’s new Killarney college.

While full plans for the new third level institution have yet to be revealed, it is understood that not all of the site will be used to build the college. The remaining portion is being ear-

marked as a potential location for social housing.

At a recent meeting of the Killarney Municipal District, Cllr Maura Healy-Rae asked if the Council would progress plans to build homes on the site.

“Part of the site had been earmarked for social housing delivery and that the overall plan for the totality of the site, including potential use of portion of the site for social housing, is being reviewed currently,” a Council official told the meeting. Once this review is complete, members of Killarney Municipal District will be informed.

Pat is on top of the world

Pat Brosnan retired from his teaching post at Lissivigeen Nnational School in February last year.

Since then he has devoted his new found free time to prepare for the ascent of the highest mountains in Africa. At 5,895 metres, the fabled mountain is almost six times the height of Carrauntoohil.

The 59-year-old made the summit of Kilimanjaro on February 2 after eight days of climbing and almost one year to the day after he left his teaching career. He joined a seven-person team that included three Americans and three Canadians, and such were the demands of the ascent only five of the party made it to the top.

An experienced guide helped each day and a separate group of Sherpas transported their camping gear and clothing to each night’s camp site.

“Our guide climbed Kilimanjaro over two hundred times so he knew what he was talking about,” he told the Killarney Advertiser.

Altitude sickness was common amongst members of the group and while Pat did admit to suffering some headaches he said his pre-event preparation helped him cope with the demands of the climb.

“One man was throwing up regularly. Another had to abandon over severe hypothermia,” he said.

He regularly climbed local mountains like Mangerton, Carrauntoohil and Brandon, but the bulk of his training was done in the Glanageenty outdoor amenity near Tralee.

“It was a bucket list dream for me,” he added.

While it took the team eight days to scale the mountain, it took just two to come back down. Each day they went so far up the mountain to get used to the new altitude before dropping back down to camp each night.

“We had no phone coverage for 10 days, it helped us focus on the mountain,” he said.

The last day of the climb was the hardest. They started at 11pm and arrived at the top just before daybreak.

The group had less than 10 minutes to enjoy the sunrise before they started their descent.

Pat thanked his family and friends, especially his wife Mary, for all the support and encouragement over the last 12 months.

Premiere screening of Ukrainian film on anniversary of war

Killarney-based Ukrainians are inviting the public to the premiere screening of the Ukrainian documentary film 'Life to the Limit'.

The premiere will be held at The Great Southern Killarney on February 22 at 6pm to mark the anniversary of the fullscale Russian invasion of Ukraine. Entry is free and donations are welcome.

The documentary is the first film that shows the struggle of the Ukrainian people from the Revolution of Dignity in 2014 to today.

For this work, the authors reviewed more than 600 archive hours of the chronicle to create the most emotional story of what they have experienced since 2014 so that the whole world will understand them.

The authors of the film are Ukrainian veterans, director Pavlo Peleshok and producer Yurko Ivanyshyn. Their previous film 'Winter on Fire' was nominated for an Oscar in 2016 for Best Documentary Feature.

Over the past year, many Ukrainians have died defending their land, many

have survived captivity and torture, many have lost their relatives and homes.

More than eight million Ukrainians have tried to save their lives and the lives of their children by becoming refugees. Some of these Ukrainians made it to Killarney and received shelter and support from the local community.

“As a new part of the local community, we want to provide more information about what is happening in Ukraine and explain why we are here. Together with the whole world, we want to draw attention, on the date of the anniversary, to the beginning of the full-scale aggression against Ukraine,” local representatives of Association Ukrainians in the Republic of Ireland (AURI C.L.G), and organisers say.

The film screening takes place within the framework of the international initiative of the World Congress of Ukrainians and AURI C.L.G.

"Many thanks to the Great Southern Killarney for their continued support of Ukrainian cultural initiatives."

Murphy returns to the saddle

Killarney star jockey Oisin Murphy returned to the saddle yesterday evening (Thursday) for the first time since serving a 14-month ban.

The three-time champion jockey was banned after he was found to have broken COVID-19 protocols in September 2020, and he also failed alcohol tests in May and October of 2021.

He returned to action where he rode the Mick Appleby trained Jupiter Express in Chelmsford – the race took place after the Killarney Advertiser closed for print.

The British Horse Racing Authority (BHA), which sanctioned the return of Murphy’s

licence, said Murphy would be “subject to an enhanced testing regime” as part of his relicensing process.

“We are grateful for Mr Murphy’s timely and courteous approach to the relicensing process,” said a BHA statement.

“While the full conditions will not be made public, they include the need for Mr Murphy to remain sober and avoid the use of any illicit substances or social drugs. To monitor this, Mr Murphy will be subject to an enhanced testing regime both on the racecourse, and through the providing of hair samples for analysis at random times of the BHA’s choosing.”

Diamonds were always Susan O’Sullivan's best friend as she frequented Keanes Jewellers regularly with her wages from ‘A Touch of Class’ at the Innisfallen Mall from a very early age.

So it came as no great shock that she was the successful candidate in taking up a sales position at the popular jewellery store over 17 years ago.

And now Susan begins a new sparkling chapter as the first ever lady Store Manager taking over from Paul Trant who has 29 years service with the popular High Street shop. She has large boots to fill but will do so with ease with her friendly smile and glamour.

Are diamonds really a girl's best friend Susan?

“I’m an employee at Keanes for 17 years now so I think it’s safe to say the most precious diamonds are the staff in the store. Keane’s are a fantastic family based company. With Paul's departure, we are a team of six where Joan Lenihan is 42 years with Keanes and Breda O’Leary is 32. In addition to Breda and Joan, we have great camaraderie with Andrea McCarthy, Lauren Rintoul full-time and Emma Griffin part-time. Joan has worked with three generations of the Keane family from Paddy and Eileen, their sons Gerard and Pat and now their sons Ger and Patrick. I think that’s a fantastic testament to the family, truly a great place to work. The Cork store is 75 years in business and we are established in Killarney 45 years now.

You’ve worked in Keanes for almost half of their 45 years in existence in Killarney. I’m sure you’ve shared many special moments with customers down through the years?

“The obvious one is the excitement of a newly engaged couple. We are sometimes the first to know, before family and friends which is very special. The journey of special occasions there after is wonderful when our clients return to buy the wedding rings, the christening gifts

Marie Meets

Susan begins new sparkling chapter at Keanes Jewellers

and many other milestone gifts. Only in recent months a client returned to me to purchase an item for her graduation. I remembered piercing her ears as a child.

I was thrilled this daunting experience as a child hadn’t put her off returning to Keanes,” Susan laughed.

I looked around and wanted everything in sight and wondered how Susan coped given her magpie tendencies from an early age!

"I won’t lie, it is difficult. I’m ‘invested’, what can I say,” Susan laughed. “Most of our jewellery comes from Italy and London. Just before COVID hit, in February 2020 I had the enormous privilege of travelling to Italy with the company buyer Pauline O’Callaghan which was the

most amazing experience. It was great to meet all our suppliers in person and I was thrilled to bring some of the most fabulous pieces back to our clients in here in Killarney."

So what changes will the new position bring?

“Like many of my clients I have grown up with Keanes. It fits in well with my family life with my two Donal’s, senior and junior. I’ve bought my engagement ring here, my wedding ring and many other pieces since. That’s not something that will change for me. I suppose I will have a few more trips to Cork here and there and I am open to anything that comes my way in my new role but my main goal is as always looking after our fabulous clients."

On my way out I admired the fabulous selection of watches and asked if they were still a popular gift - given phones do that and more!

"Watches are as popular as they ever were yes, but the best time to go by here in Keanes is by the impeccable time keeping of another of our regulars, Connie O’Shea, our postman. He works like clock work, always on time but always time for the chats too.

“We will miss Paul lots but I’m very excited with my new role here at Keanes,” Susan concluded.

Do you think there is another 17 years in you Susan? I asked.

“That and more I hope Marie!"

The company has a large customer base in the USA and UK.

In 2022, the first full year of tourism following the global pandemic, CIE Tours booked over 250,000 bed nights throughout the country.

“We are very encouraged by the pipeline of bookings for the coming year, which are ahead of expectations, and we look forward to ensuring that our partners and

our host communities continue to benefit from our success in attracting visitors to travel with us to Ireland,” the company’s CEO, Elizabeth Crabill, said. She was speaking at the CIE Tours Awards of Excellence which were held this week where several Killarney-based tourism businesses won awards.

Killeen House Hotel was one of 14 national winners who had the highest customer rating in their category.

Five Killarney hotels, the Great Southern Killarney, the Killarney Avenue Hotel, the Killarney Plaza Hotel, the Killarney Towers Hotel and The Brehon each received a merit award.

Local attractions, Killarney Horse and Carriage Tours and Tangney Tours Jaunting Car, each received a merit award.

He broadened his experience as a Food & Beverage Manager and also as a Conference & Banqueting Manager in hotels in Kerry and Wexford before settling in his home town of Killarney and the Castlerosse in 2013.

“I am honoured to take the reins from my father and continue the legacy he worked hard to create at the resort and within the destination town of Killarney," Mark said. "We’ve set in motion big plans at the resort which are already under construction, to expand our offering and to bring solutions to challenges currently facing the hospitality sector, from the introduction of staff quarters to the major upgrading and refurbishment of the famed

on-site Kenmare House into a luxury destination for the tourist rental market. I look forward to bringing these to life through the busy summer season ahead and into the future of a resort that’s much-loved by those who visit.”

Department in talks with hotels returning to tourism sector

Department officials are in talks with hotel operators that intend returning their premises back into tourism bed-nights.

With the season just around the corner, hotel operators in Killarney and further afield will have to make decisions about if they'll re-open to the public or if they are to continue as accommodation centres for International Protection Applicants and refugees.

Officials from the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth (DCEDIY) say they are in negotiations with hotel operators to “mitigate room losses and also in relation to planned re-location of International Protection Seekers”.

The DCEDIY says that it cannot comment on individual hotels and contractual matters “as the information is commercially sensitive”.

However, Department officials say that negotiations are ongoing with residents

and hotel operators.

“In relation to residents of accommodation centres which are returning to tourism and hotel accommodation, negotiations are ongoing to mitigate room losses and also in relation to planned re-location of International Protection Accommodation Services [IPAS] residents,” a Department official told the Killarney Advertiser.

“IPAS will be in contact with residents as soon as plans are in place in order to give residents as much notice as possible."

Department officials have not identified additional properties in Killarney to make up the shortfall should some hotels return to the provision of tourism services.

Rumours are rife that two well-known premises in Killarney have been inspected by department officials with a view to using them as accommodation centres.

“Department officials have confirmed that there is no record of any discussions with the mentioned properties,” said the spokesperson.

Mission Road closed to traffic for two days this week.

The road closed between its junction with Lower New Street and the Plaza Hotel yesterday (Thursday) and today (Friday) to facilitate essential resurfacing works.

Mission Road has become rutted by horses on the popular jarvey route to and from the National Park.

There have been several calls to have the road re-surfaced.

In January 2020, before COVID-19 restrictions, several councillors called for a jarvey plan to be adopted in the town. At that time a Killarney Municipal District meeting was told that the surface of Mission Road, which was resurfaced in January 2017, was already showing signs of deterioration.

In March 2019, the Council said it was researching various resurfacing materials including looking at how horse traffic was managed in New York’s Central Park.

Young Killarney director hoping for film festival success

A young Killarney filmmaker is hoping for national success at the Fresh Film Festival in the Youth Short film competition category.

Glen Bowler’s period drama ‘The Legend of Patrick Greenwood’ was shot on location in several Killarney locations including the National Park, Muckross House and Gardens, Ross Castle and Muckross Traditional Farm.

Set in the 1800s, ‘The Legend of Patrick Greenwood’ tells the story of a solider who returns from a war to resume life as a gardener at a stately home (Muckross House).

Lord Montenotte wants to reward Patrick (played by Aghadoe man Mikie Galvin), for his loyalty as a gardener. His new found wealth puts his life in danger as a jealous rival plots to kill him. “It is a fictional story but it is historically accurate,” Glen, who both wrote and directed the short film, said.

Glen has entered the 15-minute movie into the Limerick-based film festival. Last year the West End House School of Arts student won the Regional Audi-

ence Award for his feature length ‘Inner Journey’.

“This time I wanted to tell a compact story, to condense the story into 15 minutes but still make an impact was a challenge.”

‘The Legend of Patrick Greenwood’ won’t go on general release until after the Fresh Film Festival which runs from March 27 until April 1.

The Killarney Advertiser got a sneak preview for review.

‘The Legend of Patrick Greenwood’ captures the beauty and splendour of Killarney National Park and its surrounds. For 15 minutes viewers are given a trip back in time, showing what life might have been like in Muckross two hundred years ago. It is well written, beautifully directed with a wealth of local acting talent – many of the students at Michael Fassbender's and the late Donal Courtney’s West End House School of Artsare given the opportunity to showcase their skills.

Local charities get a welcome financial boost

Two local events over the Christmas period managed to raise a whopping €36,530 which was handed over to charities this week.

The Brian Lawlor Trust and Kerry Cancer Support Group were the beneficiaries of the funds raised by kind-hearted locals during the Sam to the Summit and the Denis Michael Dennehy Memorial Pool Tournament.

Firstly, on St Stephen’s morning over 400 trekkers gathered in Glenflesk for the historic ‘Sam to the Summit’ fundraiser. The winter skies cleared and spectacular views of the Kingdom and beyond greeted the climbers and the illustrious trophy.

“A huge thank you to all who supported and donated online and in person. It was a great community effort and couldn’t have taken place without the dozens of volunteer stewards and those on registration on the day,” organiser Emma Cooper said.

Meanwhile, The Corner Bar in Barradubh hosted the annual Denis Michael Dennehy Memorial Pool Tournament over the Christmas period.

128 participants took part in the competition, culminating with the final on January 2 and once again all proceeds going to the charities. A fantastic night of sport,

music and song from The Border Boys saw Rathmore man Pádraig Nagle came on top against his good friend Dónal Óg Kelliher in the final.

“€2,540 was raised by participants and supporters. The Dennehy family would like to take this opportunity to thank all those that generously sponsored raffle prizes and supported us throughout the tournament,” added Shane Dennehy on behalf of the family and organisers of the tournament, which is held annually in Denis’s memory.

Organisers were astounded at the generosity of those who supported both events from near and far.

“The total collected is a tremendous tribute to the esteem in which these charities are held,” Ollie Favier, on behalf of the Organising Committee, said.

In a time where sad and bad news can dominate our airwaves it is comforting to know that the spirit of goodness and generosity still shines when groups come together to help each other.

Finally, Derry Healy paid tribute to friend and neighbour Johnny O’Brien, who died on Christmas night.

“Johnny knew the mountain like the back of his hand and would have been one of the first men there with us. I have no doubt he was with us in spirit that day, high on the hills where he loved to roam. We missed him. May he rest in peace.”

FESTIVAL: Killarney's Wander Wild Festival, Ireland’s great outdoors festival, takes place from March 24 to 26.

Festival launches dedicated youth programme

The Wander Wild adventure and wellness festival will have a dedicated children's programme for the first time this year.

The great outdoors and adventure festival takes place in Killarney from March 24 to 26.

New for 2023 is the addition of a range of activities aimed at children of all ages and teenagers to encourage them to have fun and to explore nature.

“The Wander Wild Kids Zone is located at the Festival Base Camp in the town centre and will give kids the chance to get messy and make some noise,” said an event spokesperson.

“The budding 'wander wilders' will be well entertained - they can make masterpieces in the nature craft areas, dance their little legs off to video discos, be enthralled with a science show, play giant garden games like Jenga and Connect 4, explore the creative corner, enjoy story time, or get their face painted, and lots more.”

ACTIVITIES

Teenagers can test their skills of solving puzzles and riddles when they try out

The Escape Room, or budding actors and singers can create a unique musical and drama performance at the ‘Spring Awakening’ workshop, run by MACademy Performing Arts School.

New moms can relax and work on their strength and flexibility at mother and baby yoga, while the baby enjoys nursery

Music legends team up to release new single

They're two legends in the world of Irish music and now they've come together to release a band new single.

Local music man Liam O’Connor has teamed up with Country Music star Mike Denver and will release a version of the popular old-time ballad ‘The Story I’ll Tell You is True’ next week.

This is the second time that the men have worked together.

Over 10 years ago the pair collaborated to record ‘The Day of My Return’, an account of an outlaw that left Killarney to make a fortune gambling on boxing matches in America.

Liam is turning to his own roots for their last work as ‘The Story I’ll Tell You is True’ was written by the late John Joe Reidy from the accordion player’s hometown of Newmarket, County Cork.

“I’ve always wanted to record John Joe’s

song as he was a friend of mine and a fine singer and piano accordion player,” Liam said.

“It was such a great joy to work with Mike Denver over 10 years ago and have that track viewed over a million times online, that is why I invited Mike to work with me on ‘The Story I’ll Tell You is True’.” The recording will also feature Killarney pianist Tony O’Flaherty.

rhymes and baby massage.

There are a host of activities for five to 10-year-olds including a children’s yoga class or a mystery hunt in search of “the creature who lives in the deep dark woods of Killarney House”.

There is also an opportunity to hold reptiles, raptors, insects, mammals, and arachnids. Families can experience ‘Ciar’s Quest’ digital treasure hunt around Ross Island where they can virtually meet and interact with some of Kerry’s iconic wildlife.

Wander Wild is a family friendly festival with a range of activities that the whole family can take part in. From guided walks and cycles through the National Park, to guided hikes up some of Kerry’s beautiful mountains, park runs, boat trips through the lakes, pony treks, and the Blue Pool experience.

For the adults that want their own adventure, check out the full festival schedule on wanderwildfestival.com - there are over 50 activities from scaling Carrauntoohil, to sunrise dips and saunas, a range of yoga classes, guided hikes, kayaking tours, the premiere of two Irish adventure films, a gourmet food trail, a photo exhibition, and a spectacular opening Spring Equinox parade to celebrate the end of winter and the rebirth of spring.

Calls for a permanent theatre in Killarney town

A successful three-night run of short plays in a Killarney hotel has highlighted the need for a permanent theatre in the town.

Last week the Dochas Drama Group staged a three night short play run in the Killarney Avenue Hotel. All three plays were written, produced and performed by members of the group.

Close on two hundred people attended the plays in the ballroom of the Killarney Avenue.

While the majority of the audience were local, the performances were also attended by visitors.

“The attendance reflects the appetite for drama in the Killarney area. Feedback from non-locals has been that they are incredulous that there is no theatre in the town. Maybe as locals we have just got used to it,” said Brian Bowler, who is an actor and director with the amateur group.

There are plans to include a new theatre in the redevelopment of the Áras Phádraig on Lewis Road but that is many years away.

New buses driving community living for St Mary of the Angels residents

Shopping, movies, gym sessions and overnight stays - new buses are allowing residents of St Mary of the Angels in Beaufort access the local community more regularly.

From horse riding and hairdressing appointments, to library visits and sports, more transport means more regular activities beyond their home. Skills teaching plays a big role in each of the community outings. The importance of road safety, the use of traffic lights, how to choose from a menu, or pay for an item in a shop - these are all independent skills people can practise and achieve in the community.

St Mary of the Angels was initially funded for one wheelchair accessible bus but it soon became apparent that with more transport, more residents could access activities outside of the campus. There are now three buses, which allows the Social and Recreational Service team to

carry out leisure sampling activities for each of the residents.

DAY TRIPS

The additional transport affords the freedom to go on faraway day trips without clock-watching to get the bus back. The team have also been able to facilitate and commit to weekly community activities such as gym sessions, swimming at the community pool, beautician appointments, personal shopping, meals out and many more. Each outing is tailored to the wants and goals of the person.

The extra transport also supports the residents to go further afield for overnight trips. One resident, Tomas, went to Cork City for the night, visited Fota Wildlife Park, did some shopping and

took in a movie and dinner. The pure joy that this trip alone brought to Tomas was easy to see. Previously, with only one bus, the other people that live with Tomas would have been house-bound for two days to allow this trip to happen.

Another resident, Reece, is supported by the Social and Recreational Service to attend the gym in Killarney each week for his personal training session with coaches, Connor and Stephen. Not only have these gym sessions contributed to his health, Reece has built a great rapport with his coaches and the other staff. He is known by name by the regulars that train at the same time as him.

These are just two examples of the many experiences that each individual now has, made possible by the new buses and the Social and Recreational Service. Goals for 2023 include numerous overnights for many residents, as well as community art classes and day trips!

HSE Cork Kerry Disability Services welcomed the allocation of once off national funding that allowed for these new buses.

"This funding has allowed us to update aged vehicles across a number of agencies in Cork and Kerry. St John of God Services received funding to purchase two extra vehicles for their day and residential services and what a difference it has made, "Majella Daly, Head of Disability Services, Cork Kerry Community Healthcare, said.

"You can see how much it has enhanced the lives of the residents. It gives them so much freedom and independence, as well as opening up a whole world of activities that adds meaning to their day. They get to meet new people, plan days out and integrate more into their local community. It's fantastic to see how the new buses have helped to change and improve lives."

How Liebherr came to be in Killarney

Written by Tom Foley, the book - which will be formally launched at an open event in the Hotel Europe & Resort on Monday, March 20 - tells the story of how Liebherr came to be at a time when Killarney was still a rural backwater.

Tom began employment with Liebherr as a Trainee Fitter/Welder in 1963. After two years in this position, he progressed through several management positions, including Works Organisation Manager and Human Relations Manager. He retired in 2009, after 46 years of service with the company.

The book talks of the importance of Liebherr to the people of Killarney and beyond. It is packed with detail, rich with humour and full of anecdotes. It is a book about the people of Liebherr, written by someone who was there for almost half a century.

Liebherr Container Cranes Ltd., founded in Kirchdorf an der Iller in Southern Germany in 1949, is one of the largest construction equipment manufacturers in the world and also operates from a base

in Killarney. The Liebherr Group includes over 140 companies across all continents. In 2021, it employed more than 49,000 staff and achieved combined revenues of over €11.6 billion.

The Killarney Advertiser, with assistance from Liebherr Container Cranes, has been given permission to publish an excerpt from the new books.

CHAPTER ONE

"Michael, a local boy, was pedalling his way to school that day. His curiosity was aroused by unusual activity opposite the

entrance to Killarney Golf Club. A big man was trying to open a gap in the fence with a spade. Nothing unusual about that, except for the way he was dressed.

An expensive suit, shirt and tie did not seem appropriate attire for the task at hand.

Also, Michael wondered why the group of onlookers seemed unwilling to help. Even more puzzling, a bulldozer, with its engine running, was standing idle nearby. Michael rested on his bike for a few minutes, one foot on the road and the other on a pedal, trying to make sense of the

strange proceedings. Soon, the big man stepped back and allowed the bulldozer to finish the task. Perhaps the job was a bit too much for him?

Michael, now realising he was going to be late for school, scratched his head with bewilderment and moved on. He decided to invent a more credible tale to explain his lateness. His teacher was an understanding man. However, he wasn’t going to test his patience by spinning him a story that seemed a little bit too far-fetched. When Michael arrived at school, no excuse was needed. Word had spread like wildfire that the Germans had arrived. Everything now made sense. The name of the man with the spade was Hans Liebherr, and he had been performing a ceremonial opening of the site for his new factory.

Rumours that the Germans were coming had abounded in recent months. Now, on this chilly February morning of 1958, the strange activity at Gortroe proved they were well-founded."

Rotary presents €27k to multiple charities

There was a happy atmosphere in the Great Southern Killarney on Wednesday when a local club presented cheques totalling €27,000 to a number of charities.

The money came from the very successful Wine & Art Evening organised by Killarney Rotary Club in association with Daly’s SuperValu and Killarney Brewing Company.

Members were delighted to present it to Coolick NS, Gaelscoil Faithleann, Holy Cross Mercy NS, St Francis School, Tiernaboul NS, Irish Pilgrimage Trust, Kerry Stars Special Olympics Club, Killarney Athletic AC and Killarney Cougars Basketball Club. The representatives from each spoke to the group gathered and said what the money will fund. Each of them thanked Killarney Rotary Club for giving them the opportunity to be involved in such a wonderful event and that this money means so much to them.

Killarney Rotary Club President Rayla Tadjimatova spoke and said the club were delighted to work with such an enthusiastic bunch of people and that there was a wonderful buzz in the room on the night of the event. She thanked the members of the club for all the hard work that went into the planning and hosting of this event to make it such a success. She thanked all the family members and friends of Rotary that helped in any way and it is important to note that all this work is voluntary. She said it was great to see the artists and patrons enjoying themselves on the night. She thanked Daly’s SuperValu and Killarney Brewing Company for their ongoing support of this event year in, year out and she gave a special thanks to the team at the Great Southern who ensured everything was OK on the night and the room was looking beautiful all decked out for the Christmas season. She also thanked Mike Neeson for the entertainment in the bar from early until late.

Fitzgerald Stadium to host historic intercounty camogie match

History will be made in Fitzgerald Stadium tomorrow (Saturday) when the venue hosts its first-ever inter-county camogie match.

The Kerry senior team will get their National League campaign underway against Westmeath.

While the famous stadium has hosted inter-club matches before – back in the 1960s and 1970s – this will be the first time that a National Camogie League game has been played there. Camogie is a predominantly North Kerry-based sport but it has been growing particularly well in the Killarney area in recent years.

The Killarney Advertiser understands that a preferred venue in North Kerry became unavailable and that the opportunity fell to Fitzgerald Stadium.

Tomorrow's National League game will be a massive boost to grassroots camogie locally.

“It is a big deal for the sport,” Sarah Dineen, Chair of Killarney Camogie Club, told the Killarney Advertiser.

“Camogie is booming in Killarney, we had 44 girls at Under 8 and 10 training last week which is unheard of.”

The club’s Under 13 team will play a demonstration match during half time of Saturday’s fixture which is set for a 2pm throw-in.

Cillard's Clodagh Walsh and Sara Murphy of Clanmaurice have been named as the joint Kerry captains for the year ahead.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

Responsible dog ownership

There has been a lot of discussion recently about dog ownership and the current level of dog control regulations in Ireland.

‘Man’s best friend’, dogs, particularly large dogs, represent a potential danger to pedestrians, motorists and livestock if they are not kept under control at all times.

All dog owners have a responsibility to ensure that their dog is properly cared for and that they are not a nuisance or a danger to their neighbours or other members of the public. Dogs that are not kept under proper control may also cause nuisance and annoyance by damaging or defecating on neighbours’ property, or by excessive barking. Local authorities are responsible for the control of dogs under the Control of Dogs Act 1986. They can appoint dog wardens, provide dog shelters, seize dogs, impose on-the-spot fines and take court proceedings against dog owners.

LEGAL REQUIREMENTS

If you are a dog owner, you must have a dog licence and get your dog microchipped.

There are three types of dog licence: An individual dog licence, which costs €20 and is valid for one year.

A ‘lifetime of dog’ licence, which costs €140 and is valid for the dog’s lifetime. A general dog licence, which costs €400 and is valid for one year.

You can apply for an individual or lifetime dog licence at your local post office or licences.ie. A general dog licence application must be submitted to your local authority.

• English Bull Terrier

• Staffordshire Bull Terrier

• Bull Mastiff

• Dobermann Pinscher

• German Shepherd (Alsatian)

• Rhodesian Ridgeback

• Rottweiler

• Japanese Akita

• Japanese Tosa

These dogs (or strains and crosses of them) must:

Be kept on a short strong lead by someone over the age of 16, who is capable of controlling them.

Be securely muzzled whenever they are in a public place

Wear a collar with the name and address of their owner, at all times.

All dog owners owning purebred or crossbred dogs belonging to this list of breeds must ensure that these dogs are securely muzzled and on a strong leash not more than two metres in length when in a public place.

The rules on muzzling and leashing do not apply to dogs used by the Gardaí, the Dublin Harbour Police, State Airport Police and bona fide rescue teams in rescue operations. The rules on muzzling do not apply to guide dogs for the blind.

STRAY DOGS

first time tomorrow

Your dog must be under your control, or the control of another responsible person, if it is outside your home or premises. You are liable for any injury or damage your dog causes to people or livestock.

It is an offence to let a dog under your control foul in a public place. If it does happen, you, or the person in charge of the dog, must remove the faeces and dispose of them in a suitable, sanitary manner. If a dog fouls in a public place, and the owner doesn’t remove the faeces, you can make a complaint to the District Court under litter laws. Before you do this, you must inform the dog owner by completing a form available from the Dog Control Unit of your local authority.

DANGEROUS DOGS

These are a list of breeds of dogs that are considered to be potentially more dangerous to people than other breeds of dog. Additional rules apply to the following breeds (and strains/crossbreeds):

• American Pit Bull Terrier

Stray dogs are dogs that are in a public place and are not accompanied by the owner or a responsible person. Interestingly, dogs that are not under proper control are also considered stray dogs. You can receive an on-the-spot fine if your dog is not under proper control. Stray dogs can be seized by the dog warden or Gardaí and brought to a dog pound. These dogs may be put down or re-homed if their owners do not claim them within five days. If your dog has strayed or is missing, you should contact the local dog pound directly to check if your dog is there. Before you collect it, you will have to pay a re-claim fee and produce a current dog licence. If you do not have a current dog licence, you must get one before collecting your dog.

NOISY DOGS

If your neighbour’s dog won’t stop barking and you are unable to resolve the issue with the dog owner, you can make a complaint to the District Court and look for a hearing. When you get a court date, you must notify the dog owner using a prescribed form, which is available from your local authority or District Court.

You can call the local Citizens Information in Kerry on 0818 07 7860 from Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm. Alternatively you can email on tralee@citinfo.ie or log on to www. citizensinformation.ie for further information.

Transition Year students from Killorglin Community College have won a national award.

They were announced as the winners of the Think Languages 2022 social media competition which is in conjunction with Languages Connect, an annual celebration of languages and culture.

The fifth annual #ThinkLanguages event was the biggest yet with over 15,000 TY students taking part from 180 schools nationwide.

This year’s theme once again focused on 'Think Global, Act Local'. Students were encouraged to look at the diversity of languages spoken within their school, community and beyond as inspiration for their activities and events.

Two Transition Year classes together with their teachers, Ms Saoirse Riordan and Ms Karen Fitzgerald, organised a variety of events over a two-week period in November.

These activities included a language class, whereby students of different nationalities taught the Second Years French, German, Ukrainian, Afrikaans and Tamil. There were also language workshops, including a whole school Irish Sign Language workshop along with Polish and Chinese, an exhibition, ‘Le Petit Déjeuner’ and a primary school lesson in which the TY groups taught Spanish to the Fourth Class pupils of Scoil Mhuire, Killorglin. On top of all this, they created a video using greetings in different languages.

National award for language loving students

AWARD: Transition Year students from Killorglin Community College won a national award in conjunction with Languages Connect and their #ThinkLanguages competition.

The Transition Year students also took part in a 30-minute opening ceremony with inspirational speakers including Olympic Council of Ireland CEO, Peter Sherrard, Comedian Killian Sundermann and Content Creator Mandy Cherie who provided an insight into their relationships with modern foreign languages and the immense value their skills have

brought to their lives. This was followed by a virtual quiz where one of their teams came 12th out of over 800 teams. All events were actively promoted and shared on the group’s social media.

“We are extremely proud of all the Transition Year students who hosted the event," Saoirse Riordan, Spanish Teacher, said. "The creativity, leadership and

teamwork skills the students displayed are a testament to them. They fully embraced the initiative which was evident in the variety of languages and cultures represented. As a school that prides itself on being innovative and diverse, this accolade undoubtedly represents what we as a school are about; inclusion, equality and learning.”

Shania Twain Queen of Me

Five-time GRAMMY® award winning and multi-platinum selling icon Shania Twain has released her latest album. 'Queen of Me' is the sixth studio album by the Canadian singer and songwriter. It is her first album since 'Now' (2017), and is her first to not be released with her previous label of 29 years, Mercury Nashville. The album was promoted with the release of two singles: 'Waking Up Dreaming' and 'Giddy Up!', and will be supported by the 'Queen of Me' World Tour starting in April this year. It's described as "the superstar's most

triumphant-feeling body of work; an album about standing in your own power and worshipping yourself". Its lead single 'Waking Up Dreaming' was co-written and produced with BTS hit maker David Stewart.

"I want to carry a clear message, particularly as a woman, to always remember my power," the 57-year-old wrote on Instagram.

"These days, I'm feeling very comfortable in my own skin — and I think this album reflects that musically."

A hilarious and painfully relatable debut novel about one woman’s messy search for joy and meaning in the wake of an unexpected breakup, from comedian, essayist, and award-winning screenwriter Monica Heisey. Maggie is fine. She’s doing really good, actually. Sure, she’s broke, her graduate thesis on something obscure is going nowhere, and her marriage only lasted 608 days, but at the ripe old age of 29, Maggie is determined to embrace her new life as a Surprisingly Young Divorcée™. Now she has time to take up nine hobbies, eat hamburgers at 4am, and “get back out there” sex-wise. With the support of her tough-loving academic advisor, Merris; her newly divorced friend, Amy; and her group chat (naturally), Maggie barrels through her first year of single life, intermittently dating, occasionally waking up on the floor and asking herself tough questions along the way.

on the box

Laugh-out-loud funny and filled with sharp observations, 'Really Good, Actually' is a tender and bittersweet comedy that lays bare the uncertainties of modern love, friendship, and our search for that thing we like to call “happiness”. This is a remarkable debut from an unforgettable new voice in fiction.

1921 Escape Gates go on display in Kilmainham Gaol Museum

Newly-restored gates have gone on display in Kilmainham Gaol Museum to mark the 102nd anniversary of a daring escape during the War of Independence.

Ernie O’Malley, Frank Teeling and Simon Donnelly escaped from Kilmainham Gaol 102 years ago. The Escape Gates will now form part of the permanent exhibition and will be displayed alongside its original padlock which the prisoners broke using a bolt-cutters, smuggled into the gaol by a sympathetic British soldier. The padlock is on loan from the National Museum of Ireland and returns to the gaol for the first time since 1921.

On the evening of 14 February 1921, at the height of the Irish War of Independence, the three men escaped from British custody in Kilmainham Gaol. With the help of a number of British soldiers who were guarding them, a bolt-cutters had been smuggled into the gaol which allowed the men to break the padlock on the gates to the western entrance to the building. Once outside, they found their way onto a tram and escaped to freedom. A fourth prisoner, Patrick Moran, who had played a key part in planning the escape, decided at the last moment to stay behind. He felt that if he escaped he would be letting down the witnesses who had agreed to give the evidence he felt would prove his innocence of the charges made against him. It was to prove a fatal decision however, as he was later found guilty and hanged in Mountjoy Prison on 14 March 1921. The

gates continued to hang at the western entrance of Kilmainham Gaol until the 1990s. At that time it was decided that they were no longer fit for purpose and they were removed and placed into storage until 2019 when the Office of Public Works embarked upon a project to restore the gates with a view to putting them on display in Kilmainham Gaol Museum for the centenary of the escape in 2021.

Sven Haberman of Conservation Letterfrack took on the enormous task of both conserving the gates and mount-

ing them for exhibition. The process of preserving them is among the most complex conservation projects ever undertaken by the museum. The gates, which date from the mid-19th century, measure 2.64 metres wide by 2.85 metres high and have a combined weight of approximately 800 kilograms. It took almost a year and a half to dry the gates out alone, and only then could the painstaking process of consolidating the wood and treating the rusted metal begin. Admission to the exhibition, which will run until March 31 is free.

Man dies following road traffic accident

A man, aged in his 30s, has died following a road traffic accident which occurred on Wednesday evening.

Gardaí attended the scene of the fatal single vehicle collision which happened at approximately 6pm on the N71, Kenmare to Bantry Road at Drominassig. The driver of the car was rushed to Cork University Hospital where he later passed away from his injuries. A post-mortem will now take place. A technical examination of the scene by

Garda Forensic Collision investigators took place yesterday morning (Thursday). The road was closed for a number of hours.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward and any road users with video footage (including dash cam) are asked to make this available to them. Anyone with information is asked to contact Killarney Garda Station 064 6671160, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.

A Florida couple have entered the Guinness Book of Records as the world's most tattooed couple.

Charles Helmke (81) and his partner Charlotte Guttenberg (76) have inked nearly all of their respective bodies.

Charles has covered 97.5 percent of his body in tattoos while Charlotte has covered 98.7 percent of her skin in body ink. Charles, who also goes by Chuck, got his first tattoo when he was much younger, at the age of 18 in 1959 during US army training.

He was 59-years-old when he decided to get inked for the second time.

Charlotte got her first one at 57 in November 2006 as a birthday present after the death of her second husband, who had forbidden her from getting tattoos. “I consider myself a walking art gallery. Some people buy art and hang it on the walls - I have it on my body,” Charlotte said.

"Young people tell me I'm cool and how they wish their grandmothers were like that.”

Only her head and her fingers are tattoo-free – she holds a separate Guinness World Record for the most feather tattoos on any one person - 216.

The couple met in a tattoo parlour in 2006 and began dating soon after.

The search is on for the next Rose of Tralee

The search for the 2023 International Rose of Tralee and Rose Escort of the Year has officially begun.

With rose selections taking place across 32 centres nationally and worldwide, 2022 Rose of Tralee Rachel Duffy, RTÉ Rose of Tralee presenter Daithí Ó Sé and Rose Escort of the Year Shane McHugh have officially launched the search for the 2023 International Rose of Tralee.

The 2022 Kerry Rose, Éadaein O’Connell, from Glenderry, Ballyheigue was also on hand to welcome Rachel Duffy back to the Kingdom and launch the search for this year's Roses. It took place by the Rose of Tralee statue in the Rose Garden in Tralee Town Park. The 2023 Rose of Tralee International

Festival will take place from August 18 to 22.

Over the coming months, Rose of Tralee regional selections will take place in towns and cities across Ireland, and all over the world.

"The one thing I can say to any young woman interested is ‘go for it and apply!’

The Rose of Tralee International Festival has truly been the most incredible experience so far and it's a brilliant opportunity to connect with other women and represent your community on a national stage. I am so grateful for all the lifelong friends and memories I have made on this journey. I wouldn’t change a thing,” Rachel said.

In addition to food sources, vitamin D supplements are recommended for everyone. The report issued by the FSAI’s Scientific Committee 'Vitamin D: Scientific Recommendations for 5 to 65 Year Olds Living in Ireland' details the health consequences of vitamin D deficiency, which mainly affect bone health (rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults).

The publication describes foods that help to meet vitamin D requirements, including foods naturally rich in vitamin D such as oily fish, meats, and eggs, and vitamin D-fortified foods.

For healthy children (5-11 years) a daily vitamin D supplement containing 10 µg (400 IU) should be taken during extended winter (end of October to March) for those of fair-skinned ethnicity and throughout the full year for those of darker-skinned ethnicity.

For healthy teenagers and adults (12-65 years) a daily vitamin D supplement containing 15 µg (600 IU) should be taken during extended winter (end of October to March) for those of fair-skinned ethnicity, throughout the full year for those of darker-skinned ethnicity, and throughout the full year for those who are pregnant, regardless of ethnicity.

“The weaker sunlight available from October to March in Ireland is not a source of vitamin D," Dr Pamela Byrne, CEO, FSAI, said. "People may be unaware that even on sunny days in winter, the sun’s rays are the wrong type for the production of vitamin D. As a result, we depend on our diets to supply this key vitamin, but levels of vitamin D are limited in our food supply. This results in vitamin D deficiency being common among children and adults in Ireland. We consider the prevention of vitamin D deficiency to be a public health nutrition priority and this report outlines how we can combat this deficiency through using both natural food sources of vitamin D and fortified foods along with appropriate doses of vitamin D supplements."

Cyclone and earthquake hit New Zealand

New Zealand was this week rocked by two massive natural disasters.

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck on Wednesday just days after a powerful cyclone hit the country killing four people including a child.

Authorities immediately announced a national state of emergency. It is only the third time in the country’s history to do so after the 2019 Christchurch attacks and the pandemic.

The "strong" quake struck at a depth of 48km in the capital of Wellington shortly after 7.30pm local time.

The epicentre is 50km from the town of Paraparaumu, according to the Government seismic monitor Geonet.

Cyclone Gabrielle landed on Monday with

four left dead including a child caught in rising water in Hawke’s Bay on Tuesday.

Over 10,000 people were also left without homes while so far 1,442 have been reported missing in the North Island as of Wednesday afternoon.

Over 3,000 people were fed a barbecue by emergency responders on Wednesday night in the Hawke’s Bay town of Wairoa.

“They’ll keep cooking into the night until either they run out of people to feed or they run out of food,” Prime Minister Chris Hipkins said.

The body of a volunteer firefighter was retrieved on Wednesday from a landslide that destroyed a flooded house near Auckland, according to a police statement.

Castleisland revs up for Forestry Rally

Rockfield rally co-driver Shane Buckley will return home from London to contest Sunday’s Castleisland-based Killarney Forestry Rally.

Rally drivers from across Ireland and further afield will take part in the six-stage event which is raising funds for the Irish Community Air Ambulance.

Buckley will co-drive for Tipperary driver Casey Jay Coleman in a Ford Fiesta. Rally co-sponsor Cyril Wharton (Firies) and Donal Falvey (Beaufort) will compete in a Subaru Impreza.

Father and daughter crew John and Michelle Hickey from Headford, compete in a similar machine.

Glenflesk’s Diarmuid Lynch will drive his newly restored Ford Escort on Sunday.

The car has plenty of Killarney and District Motor Club history. It was previously used by club member Denis Cronin in forestry events 20 years ago. Multiple British rally champion Keith Cronin made his debut in the car as a co-driver with his uncle during that 2003 season. The rally gets underway with a ceremonial start outside the River Island Hotel on the town’s Main Street at 6pm on Saturday evening.

Sunday’s action, in the Cordal and Rockchapel area, starts at 8.40am from the central service area in Castleisland Mart.

Government "must upgrade infrastructure" for electric vehicles

The Kerry chairman of the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI), David Randles, says the Government needs ‘to get up to speed’ if a new EU directive on electric cars is to work.

Earlier this week the EU voted to phase out the sale of any new international combustion engine cars by 2035. That means in 12 years’ time it will be impossible to buy a new petrol or diesel engine car anywhere in the European Union. Mr Randles, whose family have been involved in the Kerry motor industry for over one hundred years, has welcomed the news from a car sales and manufacturing point of view.

“Electric is the way forward,” he told the Killarney Advertiser.

“But it is up to the Government to provide the infrastructure and enough power. This can only work if everyone is up to speed.”

Meanwhile Fianna Fáil Councillor Michael Cahill has renewed his call on the Minister for Transport and the Minister for Tourism to initiate a grant scheme, supporting the installation of Electric Vehicle chargers at hotels, guesthouses and other

tourism sites.

“The prevalence of Electric Vehicles on our roads is increasing by the day as more people are encouraged to reduce their emissions to help the environment. Our network of EV chargers is small and long delays can occur when using them, even at present. When the expected rise in visitor numbers begins for the upcoming tourist season of 2023, we are not ready for a large increase in EV's requiring a daily charge,” said Cahill.

“If proprietors of all accommodation outlets were encouraged and financially supported to install EV Chargers at their properties, this would be not alone attractive to potential guests, but would also be helpful in reaching our national target for emission reduction and at the same time would encourage more people to switch to Electric Vehicles.

“I am surprised that this initiative has not already been implemented as it is a quick

fire way of increasing our EV charger network, which is woefully inadequate at present. I moved a Notice of Motion at a recent meeting of Kerry County Council

in regard to this important matter and I was pleased to receive all party support to put pressure on the relevant departments to follow up on it.”

FINANCIAL ADVISOR DIRECTORY FOR KILLARNEY

A game changer for pension holders

Despite working in pensions

for many years, I rarely mention it in any of my writings. There are two main reasons for this.

1. My curiosity leans towards more indepth investment research so detailing the idiosyncrasies of the Irish pension scene was never high on my priority list.

I’m sure what I write about bores people at the best of times, but immediate narcolepsy would be unavoidable if all I did was rattle on about pension changes.

2. The way I view pensions is simple, so there is little to be said. For most people, maxing out your pension and AVC’s should be an investment priority. The first port of call. Yes, the administration fees are questionable. Yes, the product offerings are less than inspiring but the reality is, the shortcomings (of which there are many) are outweighed by the tax benefits. Like so many financial decisions in Ireland, the tax implications determine the answer.

With that said, there are rare occasions where something happens in the pensions scene that

is worth noting.

A pensions change that actually makes a difference

Last year, as a result of IORPS II, people looking to set up an Executive Scheme

or Self-Administered Scheme (SSAS) couldn’t actually open one.

Essentially, business owners were being pushed into Personal Retirement Savings Accounts (PRSA’s) if they wanted to contribute to a pension. This was an issue, given that the ceiling on contributions within a PRSA made them less advantageous than certain Exec and Self-Administered SSAS.

At the time, PRSA’s operated on a sliding scale system, whereby you could attribute a certain amount of your salary taxfree. The older you were, the more you were allowed to contribute. Similar to standard pension schemes.

Any employer contributions in excess of these levels faced very stiff taxation in the form of Benefit In Kind (BIK). But the ceiling has now been removed thanks to the 2022 Finance Act. As of 1 January 2023, BIK charged to employers making contributions to their PRSA in excess of the ceiling has been entirely removed. What does this mean for business owners with PRSA’s?

It’s a game-changer. A trading company

can now make unlimited contributions of company cash to a PRSA up to a max of two million Euros.

In theory, a company director can now legitimately take up to two million Euro in cash out of the company and move it into their PRSA or into an employees PRSA while remaining within a completely regulated tax-structure. Upon retirement, 25% of this PRSA can be drawn down in a tax efficient manner (much more efficient than having taken the money as salary).

In practice, there must be a bona fide

Underinsurance is a critical issue

The Central Bank of Ireland has instructed insurers to contact all home owners to highlight this critical issue.

As an insurance broker we have been highlighting this matter for a number of years to our customers as the cost of building has been increasing steadily since before the pandemic.

Last year Zurich Insurance carried out a survey of over 1,000 Irish consumers. Its key findings were as follows:

According to the research, 51% of homeowners surveyed are correctly insuring their properties, while over 1/3 of homeowners (36%) are incorrectly insuring their properties by basing their calculation on their homes’ market value

as opposed to its rebuild cost. An insurance valuation refers to the ‘building sums insured’, which is the full cost of rebuilding a property including the cost of site clearance and architects’ fees. This should not be confused with the market value.

A further 36% of people who took out a home insurance policy did not take any action to calculate their buildings sums insured, i.e., the rebuild cost of their home. However, one in four people used the rebuild cost calculator operated by the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland (SCSI) or another reputable operator, while 15% of homeowners organised a bespoke rebuild valuation

through a building’s surveyor. Meanwhile, over a quarter (26%) of homeowners have reviewed the cost involved in rebuilding their home within the last year, 20% reviewed two years ago while a similar figure (19%) have left it three years or more. Almost 1/5 of homeowners (18%) have never reviewed the cost to rebuild their home or can’t remember doing so. High and rising inflationary costs across the construction sector mean homeowners should be reviewing their rebuild cost annually when renewing their policy to avoid the possibility of homes being underinsured.

I would recommend that you review your reinstatement sum insured sooner rather than later and continue to review during the year. In order to get a defin-

rationale behind the funding of your PRSA to ensure any sudden and drastic cash extractions from your company are not seen as ‘excessive remuneration’ by Revenue and taxed as salary or a distribution. In other words, if you maximise your PRSA today and draw it down next week, questions may be asked.

If I was a betting man, I doubt this opportunity will remain open for very long, especially given that financial advisors have been shouting from the rooftops about their questionable plans to implement it across the board. The Tax Institute will undoubtedly be looking to close this window sooner rather than later. Until then, a rare opportunity has presented itself for PRSA holders, and a huge incentive has emerged for those who may benefit from setting up a PRSA. Make sure you find the right tax and investment adviser to explore your options.

Spring into action to prepare your home for the market

As the evenings begin to stretch, we can look forward to some brighter spring weather with the tantalising prospect of those long dry summer evenings to come.

Following the long winter, we can get ahead of our indoor spring cleaning by sprucing up our gardens in preparation for brighter times ahead. This applies to us all but particularly so to those looking to sell in the spring market. The garden is often neglected during the colder months, so is in dire need of a good spring clean. This process does not have to be stressful and can be completed easily.

It is worth the effort - there’s nothing more satisfying than a neat garden space to go with a clean home and it’s a great opportunity to get outside in the fresh air.

Below is the first instalment of our essential jobs to complete in a garden spring clean:

• REVIEW YOUR GARDEN

If making additions is a priority, like adding new accessories or garden beds, then reviewing the space and making a plan is crucial to making sure no money is wasted. Fail to prepare, prepare to fail.

• TACKLE THE WEEDS Catching and removing weeds in spring

is necessary to prevent them from growing out of control. Dig the roots out as soil can still be fairly moist in spring months and leaving any of the plant in the ground can lead to re-rooting.

• EDGE GARDEN BEDS

Grass can easily creep out into beds during winter months, and springtime is an optimal time to remove it. The soil is normally damp and once weeds are removed it should be fairly easy to spot and pull up.

• PRUNE BRANCHES AND PLANTS

Spring is an ideal time for plants to start growing, and you can encourage this by

pruning them. It is best to wait until temperatures are consistently above 10 degrees Celsius as insects like native bees and lacewings will hibernate in branches and stems until temperatures increase. Get out and make a start and prepare your garden for spring. It will pay off. We will continue our tips for a successful garden spring clean in our next piece.

Ade's ingenious selfie is a winner

The latest Portrait themed Killarney Camera Club competition had a mix of photos from candid to posed.

Participants used natural light, studio lights and even torch light to get the desired look that they envisioned. However, it was Ade Desbrow who won the Unrestricted category with his self-portrait while Mary O’Sullivan had her first win in the Novice category.

"Ade said he used early morning natural window light to capture his self image," Deirdre Donohue from Killarney Camera Club said.

"He explained that he first put a pillow

on a chair where his face would be; focused on it and then locked the camera lens focus so it would be sharp. He then switched places with the pillow and took the photo using the timer on the camera. An ingenious selfie!"

The results are as follows:

Unrestricted category

1st Place: Ade Desbrow, Image 1 ‘Me’

2nd Place: Seamus Long, Image 13 'Cow Girl'

3rd Place: Tina Costigan, Image 8, 'Portrait'.

Novice category

1st Place: Mary O’Sullivan, Image 22, 'Portrait',

Joint 2nd Place: Maryann Heidtke, Image 3, 'Hannah'

Joint 2nd Place: Anne Kelly, Image 14, 'Ellen'

Joint 2nd Place: Noel O’Neill, Image 20, 'Dara'

3rd Place: Deirdre Donohue, Image 21, 'Quizzical'.

You can check out all the competition entries on www.killarneycameraclub.ie. The club continues to meet fortnightly on Thursday via Zoom but the club has resumed a monthly Thursday meeting in The Brehon Hotel. Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer. RF

LEAGUE OF IRELAND FIRST DIVISION

Kerry FC v Cobh Ramblers

Friday at 7.45pm

Mounthawk Park

Kerry FC captain Matt Keane says he and his teammates are eager to earn the support of the home crowd at the club’s first ever League of Ireland match on Friday. Newcomers Kerry welcome Cobh Ramblers to Tralee on Matchday 1 and Killarney man Keane knows that the home fans will have a major part to play during what is sure to be testing debut season in the First Division.

“The fans are going to be massive,” Keane told this reporter at the prematch press conference. “Friday night will be the first time a lot of the lads will have played in front of this kind of a crowd. It sounds like it’s going to be hard enough to get tickets.

“We’re under no illusions, there’s going to be good days and there’s going to be bad days. If we can get the crowd up for the game, we can really feed off them and that can make all the difference. Building that relationship and that rapport with the crowd will be massive for us.”

The all-action midfielder feels that Kerry’s status as the league’s youngest club should allow them to play with a degree of freedom.

“I wouldn’t say there’s much pressure there. We’re the new boys in the league so it’s nearly a free shot in most of the games that we come into.

“There’s a brilliant group of lads there. Everyone is absolutely buzzing. There’s great excitement for Friday night. It’s going to be a massive occasion. A historic day for Kerry.”

Former Killarney Celtic star Keane has played at this level before – he had two seasons with Treaty United in 2021 and 2022 – so he has a better idea than most

of what is required. Manager Billy Dennehy has assembled a decent-looking squad and Keane believes that they have what it takes to compete against their more established counterparts.

“We have quite a good number of fellas who have played in the League of Ireland,” Keane noted. “Seán McGrath, Seán Kennedy, Gutsy (Shane Guthrie), Nonny (Jonathan Hannifin)… There’s a good squad there who have played at a high level. We have Leo Gaxha coming back from Sheffield United as well.

“The big thing for us is going to be the intensity of the game. We do have a number of lads who are stepping up from U17 and U19 but from what I’ve seen, these boys are more than ready for this level. I think most fellas are going to be up to it.

“The vast majority of us are local lads and nearly everyone in the group has a point to prove, whether they’re coming back to the League of Ireland or they’re trying to push on and prove that they can play at this level. There’s a lot of hunger and pride and drive. You can really see it in training; everyone is pushing each other on.

“We really want to make this work. It’s not even just about us. It’s about the next generation coming after us. We’re the boys who are stepping into the unknown but hopefully this is something that will be here for a long time to come.”

MANAGER

Another man who knows what it takes to succeed at the highest level of the game in this country is Billy Dennehy. At Monday’s presser, Dennehy spoke of his deep pride at being the man who will lead this nascent outfit into their first ever LOI campaign.

“The biggest word that comes to mind at the moment is absolute pride,” Dennehy, who turns 36 today, said. “I was there at the Open Day [on Sunday] and I have to say that it was probably one of the proudest moments of my sporting career. And a match wasn’t even played.

“To see the people of Kerry come out the way they did and to see so many kids excited about being part of the journey… That’s what it’s about for me. This is what Kerry FC is for. It’s for the people of the region to have somewhere to go and let their dreams flow, to see where this game might take them.

“We were all at that stage once in our lives. I want the young players of Kerry to see days like Sunday and to now aspire to get into the first team. This is something that Kerry has wanted and needed for a long, long time. I’m delighted it’s finally here.”

Like Keane, Dennehy is optimistic about

the quality of the squad he has put together. And like Keane, the manager insists that the only expectations that matter are the ones that are being set within the group.

“It has been a long process from when we've got accepted into the league. You're into the recruitment stage straight away and with the model of the club, that obviously makes it a little bit more challenging. But the application from all the players who have come in and the players that have expressed a real desire to represent the club, although they might have had options elsewhere, shows the pride that the players do have in representing Kerry Football Club.

“The expectation is self-created. Everyone has expectations of themselves as an individual, no matter what your job is. Of course, I have expectations of myself. Analysing the players over the past few weeks and months has given me a new expectation of them and the potential that they have within them. But even as a player, I’ve never been one to look beyond the next week.

“For me it will be a very proud moment and very exciting moment to get the season kicked off but it’s just the first step on a very long and hopefully beneficial journey for everyone involved in the club.”

The former Sunderland, Shamrock Rovers and Cork City player remained tightlipped when asked about the style of football that local soccer fans can expect to see at Mounthawk Park. He did, however, insist that 100% effort from the players will be the minimum.

“Without giving too much away, you have to maximise the strengths of the

group that you have. With the level that we’re at, I’m not in a position to go out and spend €50 million on full backs or anything like that. You obviously have to manage the group and utilise their strengths.

“But we’ll always be there to compete, we’ll always be there to win. Will that happen every week? Absolutely not. But we’ll be on the front foot and trying to make that happen from the start.

“I think the players have seen that from the training that we do and the application that we demand from them. The players seem to have the exact same mindset and mentality, so everyone coming to watch Kerry Football Club will see a team ready to compete, trying to get the best result we can on that day.”

The ambitious Kerry FC venture, which has a USA-based backer in the form of Brian Ainscough, has evidently captured the imagination of the natives. A large crowd attended the club’s Open Day last weekend and the opening fixture against Cobh is a sellout.

We have been drip-fed signings over the past couple of months but Kerry saved one of the more interesting ones until last. Killarney Celtic striker Stephen McCarthy, considered the most deadly finisher in the Kerry District League, officially made the switch on Tuesday.

McCarthy signed off on his time with Celtic just days earlier by scoring from the penalty spot in their 3-0 win over Tallaght United in the last 16 of the FAI Junior Cup.

The Hoops now advance to the quarter-final stage where they will take on Ballynanty Rovers of Limerick at home. The match will be played the weekend of March 4/5.

Tonight’s the night for Kerry FC

Tonight is a very special night for the Kerry team. No, not the winners of Sam Maguire on this occasion, but Kerry FC who make their debut in the League of Ireland First Division with a sell-out opening match at Mounthawk Park.

Here’s hoping Kerry sports supporters will get behind Billy Dennehy’s squad. They will have 36 league games in all. Dennehy, a great player in his own heyday at local level and as a professional, is the manager and he celebrates his 36th birthday today. Will the dream of a double celebration become reality?

Ivan Hurley, media officer for Kerry FC, informs me that the Kerry U17 team has been playing LOI since 2015 and the longer-term progress will come at U14/15/17/19, feeding its way into the senior team of the future. That long-term plan makes great sense. What about plan plans to develop the soccer game for girls?

“Nothing is really in place yet, but that is a possibility for the future,” Ivan says. It certainly should be, especially since the

Irish women’s soccer team are so prominent and progressing to World Cup status. Apart from the great Charlton years, the Irish men’s team has flattered to deceive and is at a low level nowadays.

Ivan informs me that when the general tickets went on sale last week they were sold out in 12 minutes. That’s great but remember 1,200 is the capacity of Mounthawk Park. A huge amount of work has gone into the preparation of the Kerry soccer HQ. There has also been a huge amount of paperwork to comply with FAI standards. The Open Day at Mounthawk was very encouraging on Sunday last. It promises to be a great occasion in Tralee tonight and here’s wishing Kerry FC every success. They need to play well in their home games to maintain public interest and support. Cobh Ramblers are no great shakes, ending in the lower regions of the division.

Dennehy has signed on a good solid panel including Matt Keane, formerly of Killarney Celtic, who is a fine player with LOI experience. Look out also for squad

member Ryan Kelliher, a talented young player from Celtic, and the son of a very talented golfer, Tomás Kelliher. The Premier Division is a long way off, but you must start somewhere.

GROWTH OF SPORT

The GAA is deeply rooted in every parish in Ireland and had a strong nationalist backing when founded in Thurles in 1884. One must appreciate the state of the Irish countryside in the 1800s, whose people survived the Famine and got behind Michael Davitt to get back their native lands from the English landlords, here in Killarney and elsewhere.

Rugby got underway in Ireland circa 1890 and it became the preserve of the Irish middle class and the Anglo-Irish, with a certain perceived snobbish status. Remnants of it remain.

Limerick is more cosmopolitan in its taste in sports. Rugby and hurling dominate, with hurling more to the fore at present with the gaisce John Kiely’s unbeatable team. What is unique about Limerick is

that its rugby players come from all social strands.

Soccer catered for the working class and thrived initially in the garrison towns. Naturally, it took root in Tralee, and later in Killarney, officially in 1965 when Garda Dan Harrington founded Killarney Athletic. But impromptu soccer games were on the go unofficially for nearly two decades before that.

Over the decades, I have traced the growth of soccer in these pages, specifically in the greater Killarney area. Briefly, Garda Dan Harrington was the key man in the founding of Killarney Athletic in 1965. The 19-year-old was the catalyst to merge the local teenagers together from ‘The Sandpit’ and other unofficial venues anything but salubrious and founded the club.

As expected, opposition came from some of the local GAA fraternities, but soccer got going. Mikey Daly, Billy Healy and friends got the very successful Killarney Celtic underway in 1976. Ballyhar Dynamos - God rest you, Murt Scott - and Mastergeeha FC followed. Other soccer teams were also founded around Kerry but some floundered. Killarney Athletic boys Diarmuid O’Carroll and Brendan Moloney went on to play professional soccer in England.

Today I think of Billy Doyle, Sossy Mullins, Greg Collins, Mike Looney, Joe Grant, Don Donoghue, Kevin O’Malley and Donie Kelly, who was laid to rest earlier this week. Donie was a great basketball man in the Town Leagues and also a Gaelic player of note. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

MARCHING ON: John Kelleher and his St Brendan's teammates have qualified for yet another Hogan Cup semi-final.

TOM LONG: Laoch go smior

God he was so strong you thought he’d go on forever, but the great Tom Long died on Monday last aged 86.

He won All-Irelands with Kerry in ’59 and in ’62. It was no fault of his that they lost several other finals. A Gaeltacht man, he trained as a national teacher and was hugely influential playing with Erin’s Hope, the college team that shocked the “invincible” St Vincent’s in 1956.

I had the good fortune to play as a corner forward alongside Tom Long in the 1965 O’Donoghue Cup win over Glenflesk. This very underage teenager often thanked Longie for minding him in tackles that were robust and frequent. No cards by referees in those days; there were other ways.

Sem claim 24th Corn Uí Mhuirí title

St Brendan’s College retained their Corn Uí Mhuirí title at Mallow on Saturday last as they defeated St Francis College, Rochestown 1-12 to 1-4. They can now look forward to an All-Ireland semi-final against Summerhill College of Sligo on February 25.

Last year the Sem got to the final of the Hogan Cup but were well beaten by the powerful Naas College. The Kildare school are on target to regain their All-Ireland title; they will face Omagh CBS of Tyrone in the other semi-final.

BANTER

Playing conditions were perfect for the Munster final at the well-laid-out Mallow complex and the pre-match friendly banter between the rival college supporters set the scene for what I hoped would be a classic. It wasn’t really, but that won’t bother the Sem. They were superior throughout. Manager Kieran Herlihy and his team will be satisfied to have retained the Munster title, but will be cognisant of the fact that Roco were never going to win this game.

Brendan’s had to go without Charlie Keating, one of their best players. Hopefully he will be fit to play in the next match.

The Cork college suffered greater losses before the game as injured

stars Harry Quilligan, Micheál O’Mahony, Kevin Lyons and Bryan Hayes all missed out. This put them on the back foot. To compound their problems, midfielder Barry Kelliher only lasted 10 minutes before going off. With such body blows, Roco had little chance of success.

The quality of forward play by both sides was very poor in the opening period. Even with the wind assistance in that period, Roco were so wasteful. So, too, were the Sem forwards, but their defence was superb throughout. It wasn’t too surprising that they also contributed to the scoring. One of the best scores of the game was Jamie Moynihan’s superb, accurate strike with the ciotóg for a darling point. Shades of his famous father, Séamus.

CONTEST

The scoring was so poor in that first half: the Sem led by 0-5 to 0-3. Rochestown were so poor that they failed to score again until the 53rd minute when Seán Coakley followed through and netted following a save

by Shay O’Meara. At long last, spectators had a real contest to savour. Brendan’s reacted quickly and positively for their second brilliant score. John Kelleher, their powerful midfielder, won possession i Iár na páirce and cut through the centre, crashing a mighty shot to the back of the net. A goal that should be admired. No wonder he got the Man of the Match award.

That inspired St Brendan’s to up the pace and win comfortably with an eight-point cushion. The defence is excellent from a very reliable keeper in O’Meara and right through. Seán Fitzgerald caught the eye for his tenacity. Luke Crowley was the winner of all primary ball at 14. Strong and sure winning possession, he was unlucky to be called back by the referee when he had the ball in the Roco net in the second half.

Alex Hennigan showed up well, scoring three points, as did Timmy Moynihan (0-2). The Sem had five clear goal chances. They only scored one and an Aodh O’Neill penalty effort went wide. They will need to be less wasteful to progress further.

It was still a fine win for St Brendan’s, retaining their title, and they have plenty to improve on in their bid for the Hogan Cup.

In the 1968 O’Donoghue Cup final, the ageing Tom (then 31) didn’t move far from the front of the square, but he used that definitive and devastating short step and swerve to hit two goals. He assisted the other two goals in the 4-3 to 0-11 win over Spa. Goals win matches; Tom Long won the 1968 final.

He was also devastating with East Kerry, winning Kerry SFC titles with another prolific goalscorer Johnny Culloty at corner forward.

Tom was also very influential in getting the Fossa club going. Laoch go smior ab ea Tom Long le buanna faoi leith leis an gcaid in a lámha móra. Comhbhrón ó chroí le Bríd agus a muintir uile.

RIP: Legendary Kerry footballer Tom Long.

NATIONAL LEAGUE: DIV

Mayo v Kerry

Saturday at 7.30pm

MacHale Park | Live on TG4

1

Kerry manager Jack O’Connor is facing a selection headache ahead of Kerry’s important fixture against Division 1 rivals Mayo on Saturday.

The Kingdom travel to Castlebar in search of two crucial points and with a number of regular starters now returning from rest periods, O’Connor must decide how and when he will fit them all in.

Starting in goal, All-Star keeper Shane Ryan returned to the bench for the Monaghan game two weekends ago. The Rathmore all-rounder was given a couple of weeks off following his club’s All-Ireland triumph in the middle of January but he is now back in contention to start. Shane Murphy deputised for Ryan in the opening two rounds of the league and the Crokes man acquitted himself very well against Monaghan. Ryan is still O’Connor’s first choice, however, so he may slot back in on Saturday.

Widespread changes are unlikely at the back with the All-Ireland-winning full back line of Graham O’Sullivan, Jason Foley and Tom O’Sullivan expected to retain their spots. Pa Warren filled in at half back last time out alongside the dependable Tadhg Morley and rejuvenated Paul Murphy. Mike Breen, who missed the last match with a minor hamstring injury, is another option assuming he is available.

O’Connor facing selection conundrum

a pile of ball as a sort of false corner forward, dropping deep and dictating play with his impressive range of passing. Closer to goal, relative newcomers Darragh Roche and Donal O’Sullivan Down have been in excellent form. Dropping either of them at this point might seem harsh, especially to a manager who is known to be loyal to players who come in and play well.

If Paudie Clifford is ready to start, which seems likely considering the minutes he got in Kerry’s last match, Brosnan could be the unfortunate one to make way, simply because Clifford is more of a likefor-like replacement given the role Brosnan has been playing.

Jack Barry and Barry Dan O’Sullivan have manned the midfield area in the early part of the league and they could well carry on those duties in the coming weeks. The forward division is where things get particularly tricky for the Kerry bainisteoir. Paudie Clifford came off the bench against Monaghan and showed well and as a two-time All-Star he is guaranteed to start when Kerry are at full strength. Seánie O’Shea is also expected to play some part in the match after recuperating from a knee injury, and David Clifford

Dubs next up for unbeaten Kerry ladies

The Kerry ladies will be looking to maintain their 100% record when they welcome Dublin to Austin Stack Park on Saturday evening.

Kerry have managed to win all three of their Division 1 fixtures to date, despite being newcomers to the top tier following last season’s Division 2 final victory over Armagh.

Hard-fought results on the road against Waterford and Mayo were followed by a home win over Donegal a fortnight ago and now Declan Quill and Darragh Long’s side will be eyeing a top two finish and a spot in another final.

The Dubs, winners of four All-Irelands in a row between 2017 and 2020, are cur-

rently in third place in Division 1 having have won two of their three games to date. In their last match they just about saw off the challenge of Cork as two late frees by Carla Rowe secured a narrow one-point win.

Hannah Tyrell, who scored 1-6 from play at Páirc Uí Rinn, will require special attention if Kerry are to make it four from four. Kerry v Dublin takes place this Saturday at 5.15pm. The match will be broadcast live on TG4.

Elsewhere in Division 1, Meath welcome Mayo to Páirc Tailteann (Saturday at 2pm), Donegal play Waterford in Letterkenny (Sunday at 1pm), and Cork travel to Salthill to take on Galway (Sunday at 2pm).

is back training after taking a short break following Fossa’s All-Ireland run. Bringing both Cliffords and O’Shea straight back in to the starting lineup looks like a no-brainer on paper, but the problem is who do they replace?

Cousins Dara Moynihan and Micheál Burns both had fine games against the Farney Army and Adrian Spillane is a preferred candidate of the manager’s due in no small part to the physical presence he provides.

Tony Brosnan has been getting through

The younger Clifford and O’Shea could potentially be held in reserve until an opportune moment during the match. The sight of one or both of them being sprung from the bench would surely lift Kerry’s spirits, while dampening those of their hosts.

One of Mayo’s main men, Paddy Durcan, is rumoured to be in line for a return on Saturday.

It will be interesting to see if new manager Kevin McStay persists with his tactic of placing big man Aidan O’Shea in the full forward line. If he does, O’Shea will be picked up by Kerry full back Jason Foley.

‘Kick and move is the Kerry way’ – O’Shea

Adam Moynihan was in Croke Park this week to speak to Kerry’s All-Star centre forward Seánie O’Shea

Seánie O’Shea has echoed manager Jack O’Connor’s recent comments about Kerry’s style of play, insisting that the team is at its best when moving the ball at pace.

Speaking at Croke Park at the launch of Allianz’s sponsorship of the football championship, the Kenmare man said that fast build-up play is Kerry’s most effective – and most enjoyable – offensive tactic.

“Traditionally in Kerry that’s the way we always like to play,” O’Shea told this reporter. “Kick and move. Kick and move. Get the ball through the lines as fast as we can.

“The quicker you get it up, the tougher it is for the other team to get set up as well. It’s definitely a nice way to play. “Now, it’s not possible all the time with the way certain teams set up against you. You might have to slow it down at certain times of the game.

“But generally it’s most enjoyable when you’re kicking the ball.”

O’Connor’s comments came in the wake of the recent Monaghan game, a game which O’Shea and several other regular starters missed as they were injured and/or being rested. Kerry eventually ran out 11-point winners in Killarney (after they injected pace into their attack) with several fringe players to the fore.

The team’s captain on the field in 2022 says the form of those newcomers has given the whole panel a significant boost.

“That’s the way you want it. Fellas have come in and played very well. They’ll be looking to put down a marker for later on in the year and hold onto their jersey. It’s great for the squad. There’s good depth there and it brings great bite to training. There’s fellas lifting.

“The more competition the better you have to be playing to get your place, and that’s going to benefit the team.”

One of the players who has arrived on the scene in a major way is 22-yearold Kilgarvan native Donal O’Sullivan Down. After making an impact off the bench against Donegal, O’Sullivan was

handed his first start against Monaghan and he scored 1-3 in a eye-catching Man-of-the-Match display. The wellbuilt corner forward is a guy whom O’Shea knows well. They work as teachers in the same secondary school in Kenmare and they also travel to training together.

While O’Sullivan’s form has come as something of a bolt from the blue for many observers, O’Shea is far from shocked at his colleague’s performances.

“I’m not surprised [at how well he has done]. I obviously know Donal from when he was playing underage. He played very well for the Kerry minors and the U20s too. Then injuries came against him for a while, he had a couple of bad years out.

“But Donal works really hard off the field, getting himself in good shape. He spent a year on the panel last year and he got great experience from that and great learnings, and I’m just delighted for him now that he has hit the ground running. He’ll be looking to build on that.

“He's a great character. We do a good bit of travelling together and he’s good company in fairness. He’s a very happy character so he’s great to have around.”

O’Sullivan’s next challenge is to retain his place on the team, which will be easier said than done with the two Cliffords and O’Shea himself expected to return to the starting lineup in the coming weeks.

After recovering from a knee injury, O’Shea is hopeful of playing some part in Saturday’s match against Mayo in Castlebar.

“I’m feeling good now,” the 24-year-old confirmed. “I just had a bit of a niggle in the knee from last year. It just needed a couple of weeks extra to clear up. But I’m back doing a bit now the last couple of weeks and I’ll hopefully see game time soon enough. Hopefully now this weekend - if not then the weekend after.

“But please God now this weekend I’ll be able to see some bit of action.”

Killarney Athletic

U12 DIVISION 1 RESULT: St. Brendans Park FC B 3-0 Killarney Athletic B. The lads made the journey to Tralee this morning for a game against St Brendan’s Park who were unbeaten in the league so far this year. Unfortunately with a loss of players due to a run of unforeseen circumstances the lads took the field with 8 players instead of 9 and no subs. The only way I can describe these 8 players is Absolute Warriors! They played like their lives depended on it, supported each other throughout and threw themselves into absolutely everything and for the first 30mins controlled the game to the opposition’s evident frustration. Half time blew and it was 0-0, absolute epic first half performance. After the break they returned to the pitch and carried on much the same but unfortunately after time the extra man & the number of fresh legs they had on the bench started to show and within a 5 minute period the opposition capitalised scoring 3 goals against tired legs before our boys reasserted themselves firmly shut the door once again for the remainder of the match. So proud of the lads today, they showed resilience, grit & determination throughout. Well played lads & thanks very much to Park FC for a brilliant match. MOTM - Matthew Sanbak.

Killarney Celtic reached the last 8 of the FAI Junior Cup for the 3rd time in recent years with a clearcut win in Dublin last weekend. After a tight opening Celtic hit the front with a 39th minute penalty which Stephen McCarthy coolly tucked away. Celtic struck again before half time when Lee Downing netted. Finally Wayne Sparling confirmed the result with a 2nd half goal to send Celtic through to the quarter finals again. Well done to the management and players. Many thanks to the supporters who made the journey to Terenure last Saturday.

U14 DIVISION 2: MEK Galaxy 5 Camp Juniors 2. A solid performance from start to finish from MEK who on another day could easily have added a more to their total. It started well for the home side with all the pressure on the Camp goal and MEK’s midfield dominant. Several chances went abegging, before two perfectly executed corners from Dara Whelton broke the deadlock; Breandán Allman headed home the first on 20 minutes and Ivan O’Shea headed a second five minutes later. Cade Jameson struck to make it 3-0 with a well-worked team goal on the stroke of half-time and a score-line that reflected the run of play. Camp got one back early in the second-half before Charlie O’Reilly made it 4-1 following a superb solo-effort down the right, latching onto a through ball from Bart Flynn. Camp made it 4-2 before Alain Adamcyzk collected MEK’s fifth, two minutes from time. Manof-the-Match: Some strong performances across the park but goal-keeper James O’Reilly takes the honour thanks to some great point-blank saves and a solid performance all-round.

U16 DIVISION 1: LB Rovers 3 MEK Galaxy1. Top of the table clash. Strong LB side well set up went 1-0 from a corner but the lads settled well and pulled one back from a Karl O’Neill header. 1-1 at half time. LB scored a great individual goal just into the second half. Despite lots of pressure we couldn’t find an equaliser and got caught again just at the end. First league defeat of the season but a super shift from the lads.

Gavin Horan also seen a goal chance well saved. Laune Rangers kept in touch at the other end with Gavin O'Shea and Matthew Leslie being their main marksmen. In the second half Milltown/Castlemaine stepped it up and had a ten point lead to show for their hard work after 55 minutes at 0-16 to 0-06 with Eanna O'Connor giving a fantastic display of placed ball kicking into the breeze. The event was hosted by Shandon Boat Club and featured a 4.2km course for Fours and Eights, racing from the south side of Blackrock Castle into the Cork city marina, finishing closely beyond the Shandon BC boathouse. A cold but dry day provided near perfect conditions for the crews entered. The club was unlucky to place outside the winning times with five second place finishes including the Womens J16 and J14 Quads, Mens J16 and J14 Quads and Mens Masters Quad. The club was also third fastest in three events including the Womens J15 Quad, Mens J14 Quad and Mens Masters Quad. Our thanks to all members and parents in attendance and all who assisted with organisation of the boats and trailer over the weekend.

Killarney Cougars

U12 BOYS DIV 3: Killarney Cougars 29 Gneeveguilla 33. A well contested game at the Presentation Gym saw the visitors take the points in an exciting game. The Cougars led 9-8 after the opening quarter with good baskets by Luke Bowler and David Kennelly. The visitors took the lead by halftime 17-13 and were further ahead entering the final quarter 23-15. A strong last quarter by the Cougars had just a basket between the 29-27 with baskets by George Nomikos getting the Cougars back into the game, but the visitors just held on in an exciting finish. Cougars had good performances on this occasion from Rory Moynihan, George Nomikos and David Kennelly.

U14 JIMMY CURRAN TOURNAMENT: Our

U14 Boys travelled to Tralee early Saturday for the U14 Invitational tournament and a good performance by the boys saw them come through their group with Sligo All-Stars & Bantry Cork, through to the last 8 and a meeting v Limerick Celtics in the quarter final and despite a strong performance the Celtics finished strongly to advance to the Semi-Final going onto defeat Sligo & Tralee to take the Cup title. NATIONAL LEAGUE DIV 1: Killarney Cougars 79 Dublin Lions 104. The Killarney Cougars hosted the Dublin Lions at the Presentation Gym chasing a second consecutive home win but it was the in-form Lions that came out on top in the National League Div 1 before a good attendance. The Lions were to comfortably maintain their lead through the final quarter despite good work by Jack Lynch 8 pts and Marty Hill 9 pts, however the Lions finished the game with a total of 14 three pointers and this proved decisive as Cougars failed to match the visitors return and the Lions recorded a deserved win on a disappointing night for the Cougars who failed to build on last weeks winning perfomance. Positives for the Cougars were new signing Marty Hill continues to settle in with 24 pts on this occasion despite early foul trouble.and young Jack Lynch on 21 pts, the Dublin Lions had strong performances by Ringo Dau 26 pts, Toms Ludbasrzs 18 pts, Kevin Obasuyi 17 pts and Tiernan Howe 18 pts. Next up for the Cougars is a trip north to face Team North West in Letterkenny before a home game against league leaders Tolka Rovers on Feb 25th.
